  1. Amen. Please take your copy of God's Word and join me in John chapter 7.

    John 7 chapter mention

  2. !

  3. And in the development of that purpose, John over and over again juxtaposes people who receive Jesus and people who reject Jesus.

  4. The last time we studied John together, we saw the record of Jesus standing up at the Feast of Booths and declaring,

  5. If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink.

  6. That's verse 37.

  7. With some following comments concerning the coming of the Spirit.

  8. And these words caused quite a stir.

  9. We find some people in chapter 7 contemplating who Jesus is.

  10. Others seem to believe that he is the Christ and some want him arrested.

  11. Verse 43 says,

  12. So there was a division among the people over him.

  13. More than 2,000 years later, the world is still divided over who Jesus is.

  14. Now I have a very short quotation from John MacArthur's commentary on this, which is in my notes.

  15. But I brought a copy up here because some weeks ago I had a very dilapidated, falling apart copy that I read from.

  16. And just as a little note, I said, I need a new one of these.

  17. If anyone wants to get me a gift.

  18. And I didn't really mean it seriously.

  19. But I have since received two of them.

  20. One came anonymously.

  21. One was handed to me.

  22. And I just wanted to hold it up and note before I read this brief, brief quotation.

  23. Not just in this case, but I just wanted you all to know how very heard and loved I feel by you as a church.

  24. Story after story I hear of pastors who preach to folded arms and sneering faces,

  25. feel extraordinarily alone in the task that they have.

  26. And I just feel the opposite of that.

  27. In fact, I sometimes feel bad hanging out with pastors because I can't commiserate with them.

  28. And I don't tell them how great you guys are because I don't want them to be discontent in the place that they are.

  29. But thank you for loving me so very much.

  30. I really, really appreciate it.

  31. So, again, this issue is still at hand.

  32. And John MacArthur says this.

  33. The ultimate question that everyone must eventually face.

  34. The most crucial issue determining one's eternal destiny is,

  35. what shall I do with Jesus Christ?

  36. His claims about himself are far too audacious to just ignore.

  37. You must do something with him.

  38. You must either reject him or I hope you will receive him.

  39. How do you respond to the declaration of Jesus?

  40. If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink.

  41. Do you recognize that your soul is thirsty and it will never find the satisfaction it seeks in anything this world may have to offer you?

  42. If you do, come to Jesus.

  43. He is the source of living water.

  44. Before I read our text beginning in verse 45, join me in a prayer.

  45. Father, we are grateful for your word for these verses before us and this time we have to consider them.

  46. And we ask humbly that you would bless our time together.

  47. We want to behold Christ in this text.

  48. We want to see him rightly.

  49. If we've already placed saving faith in him, I pray that you'd give us a fresh picture of Jesus.

  50. And if we have yet to do so, I pray that you would work that miracle in hearts this morning.

  51. We pray this in his name.

  52. Amen.

  53. John 7, beginning in verse 45.

  54. The officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees who said to them,

  55. Why did you not bring him?

  56. The officers answered, No one ever spoke like this man.

  57. The Pharisees answered them, Have you also been deceived?

  58. Have any of the authorities or the Pharisees believed in him?

  59. But this crowd that does not know the law is accursed.

  60. Nicodemus, who had gone to him before and who was one of them, said to them,

  61. Does our law judge a man without first giving him a hearing and learning what he does?

  62. They replied, Are you from Galilee too?

  63. Search and see that no prophet arises from Galilee.

  64. Now this portion of John's gospel has, surprise, a literary structure,

  65. which you ought to be familiar with by now.

  66. It's called a chiasm.

  67. If that's a new word to you, please talk to me about it afterwards.

  68. I'd love to tell you about chiasms.

  69. This structure is a bit harder to discern.

  70. It has been, in other portions of the book, much easier to see.

  71. But it is there, and it places at the center of this literary structure the question,

  72. Have any of the authorities or the Pharisees believed in him?

  73. It's the helpful interpretive lens we can pick up from that structure.

  74. The Pharisees asked the question,

  75. What have any of us done with Jesus Christ?

  76. You're considering the words of this man?

  77. Well, none of us have believed in him.

  78. They use it as a rhetorical tool to convince the officers that they should have arrested Jesus Christ.

  79. Now my friends, little friends mostly in our church who are learning their logical fallacies,

  80. will know that an appeal to authority, especially your own authority,

  81. when making an argument is shaky ground at best.

  82. And that's what they're doing here.

  83. It's this question,

  84. Have any of the authorities or the Pharisees believed in him,

  85. that's at the center of this text,

  86. that frames for us the opening and the ending of it.

  87. Note it with me in the following simple outline.

  88. Number one, powerful words.

  89. Number two, prideful unbelief.

  90. And number three, really, really tried to alliterate number three,

  91. so if you'll hear my emphasis,

  92. appropriate consideration.

  93. Powerful words, prideful unbelief,

  94. appropriate consideration.

  95. Number one, powerful words,

  96. verses 45 and 46.

  97. So the officers come to the chief priests.

  98. They're returning to the chief priests and the Pharisees,

  99. and they say,

  100. Why did you not bring him?

  101. Back in verse 32 of chapter 7,

  102. we can see the Pharisees heard the crowd muttering these things about him,

  103. and the chief priests and Pharisees sent officers.

  104. So in verse 45,

  105. we're seeing the return of those officers sent,

  106. recorded in verse 32,

  107. for a purpose,

  108. to arrest him.

  109. That's what they were sent to do.

  110. Now, these officers would have been Levites.

  111. They would have been religiously trained

  112. and selected to serve as a sort of temple police.

  113. So these are Levite men going to arrest Jesus,

  114. and yet they return without arresting him.

  115. And you can get this rejection narrative

  116. if we back up even further into John chapter 5 and verse 18.

    John 5 chapter mention

  117. Why have they sent the officers to arrest him?

  118. He's back in town at a previous visit.

  119. He said some massive things about himself.

  120. He did some healing on the Sabbath.

  121. And chapter 5 verse 18 says,

  122. This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him,

  123. because not only was he breaking the Sabbath,

  124. but he was even calling God his own Father,

  125. making himself equal with God.

  126. So that's what's going on here.

  127. This is the intent of this arrest.

  128. To seize him, to bring him,

  129. and to have him put to death.

  130. From our text last time we were in John chapter 7 verse 44,

    John 7:44

  131. some of them wanted to arrest him,

  132. but no one laid hands on him.

  133. We've talked extensively about God's timeline here

  134. and it being obeyed really by everybody in Providence.

  135. And so it's not yet been time for him to be arrested.

  136. And so these officers return and the question is asked,

  137. Why did you not bring him?

  138. And their answer, verse 46, is,

  139. No one ever spoke like this man.

  140. Powerful words.

  141. What has he said in between their being sent in verse 32

  142. and their return in verse 45?

  143. You can see in verse 33 and 34,

  144. he says,

  145. I will be with you a little longer,

  146. and then I am going to him who sent me.

  147. Remember previously he's made claims about God being his Father.

  148. Father, you will seek me and you will not find me where I am.

  149. You cannot come.

  150. And then in verse 37 we see,

  151. On the last day of the feast, the great day,

  152. the feast of booths,

  153. Jesus stood up and cried out,

  154. If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink.

  155. Whoever believes in me, as the scripture has said,

  156. out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.

  157. So these are the things that Jesus has said,

  158. these officers have heard,

  159. and they report back,

  160. No one ever spoke like this man.

  161. I'm not entirely sure what is happening in the minds of these officers,

  162. what's perhaps stirring in their hearts.

  163. But it would seem that they,

  164. religiously trained men,

  165. are just unsure at this point what they are to do with him.

  166. The question hangs for them.

  167. His words to them are strange.

  168. He is declaring to be God.

  169. He is offering to eternally satisfy souls.

  170. These officers, as far as we can tell,

  171. do not accept him as the Christ,

  172. but they also do not arrest him.

  173. Once again, MacArthur, he says,

  174. caught between the power and grace of his message

  175. and the hatred of their leaders,

  176. they were paralyzed into inactivity.

  177. Just didn't do the task they were sent to do.

  178. Oh, I hope these men,

  179. as we find them considering the words of Jesus,

  180. eventually placed their faith in him.

  181. We don't know.

  182. But neutrality concerning the claims of Christ,

  183. will not stand forever.

  184. His words are too emphatic to ignore.

  185. One day, every knee will bow before Christ.

  186. So there's powerful words in the text.

  187. Secondly, there is prideful unbelief.

  188. Verse 47, 48, and 49,

  189. and then picked back up again at the end of the text,

  190. in verse 52.

  191. The Pharisees answered them.

  192. No one ever spoke like this man.

  193. They say,

  194. Have you also been deceived?

  195. Notice that the officers are not in trouble

  196. because they failed to complete the task

  197. they were sent for.

  198. They're not being derided

  199. because they didn't do the thing

  200. they were commanded to do,

  201. but because of a concern

  202. that they were being led astray.

  203. The religious elite in Jesus' day

  204. thrived by leveraging spiritual power.

  205. They claimed exclusive understanding

  206. of the demands of God's law.

  207. They added all kinds of tradition

  208. to it, interpretive tradition.

  209. Grossly misled by the law,

  210. and they wielded it to their advantage.

  211. People starting to think

  212. that maybe Jesus was the Christ

  213. caused a genuine fear in them

  214. that their power was going to go away.

  215. This is their concern all along.

  216. This is why Jesus must be put to death.

  217. Lest he raise up a rebellion

  218. and Rome comes in and squashes

  219. and takes the power away.

  220. A tiny aside for a moment at this point.

  221. Sadly and all too often,

  222. this type of spiritual abuse

  223. still happens in our day.

  224. Christian teaching

  225. that appeals to some measure

  226. of elite knowledge or interpretation

  227. has no place in churches

  228. established by and in the word of God.

  229. Beloved, be really cautious

  230. when teachers teach outside of the Bible.

  231. When they act as if

  232. they go up onto the mountain

  233. and meet with God in a cloud

  234. and bring a new word down.

  235. Faithful Christian leadership

  236. equips the saints

  237. for the work of ministry.

  238. Ephesians chapter 4.

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  239. And it does not claim

  240. to have a corner on the truth.

  241. Yesterday morning,

  242. this is still part of my side,

  243. we had one of our men's morning meetings

  244. and we talked about biblical finances.

  245. And I was trying to come up with a way

  246. to spend two hours talking about this

  247. and not just be me droning

  248. on and on and on,

  249. which I'm sure would not have been enjoyable.

  250. And so I just thought,

  251. you know,

  252. I've got,

  253. I had eight principles,

  254. eight biblical principles,

  255. and I thought,

  256. I'm just going to float the principle

  257. and then set our guys to the task

  258. of proving it

  259. or disproving it,

  260. if I was wrong,

  261. from the Bible.

  262. And I was so encouraged

  263. by these 22-ish men

  264. who were there

  265. who all had something.

  266. I mean,

  267. just,

  268. I mean,

  269. right to the Bible

  270. every single time.

  271. And I don't mean this

  272. as a boast on myself,

  273. but I'm just glad

  274. to be part of a church

  275. of people who hold the Scripture

  276. as the Scripture

  277. and aren't looking

  278. for some mountaintop experience

  279. for somebody

  280. who gives leadership

  281. to it.

  282. Okay,

  283. so,

  284. they're

  285. abusing their power,

  286. they're claiming

  287. to have a corner

  288. on the truth,

  289. that's the concern here.

  290. Have you also been

  291. deceived?

  292. And then they ask

  293. this central question,

  294. have any of the authorities

  295. or the Pharisees

  296. believed in him?

  297. This is not a genuine question.

  298. They're not actually asking,

  299. do you know

  300. this has happened

  301. in any case?

  302. What they're doing

  303. is they're saying,

  304. what's wrong with you guys?

  305. None of us

  306. have believed in him.

  307. I hope that you can feel

  308. the dripping pride here

  309. on their part.

  310. How dare you entertain

  311. the idea

  312. that he's unique

  313. in the way that he speaks?

  314. None of us

  315. have received him

  316. as the Christ.

  317. If we,

  318. the experts,

  319. aren't buying

  320. what Jesus is selling,

  321. why should

  322. you?

  323. Now,

  324. these men

  325. knew

  326. their Bibles.

  327. It is at this point

  328. that I

  329. tremble

  330. most.

  331. it is altogether

  332. possible to be

  333. familiar with

  334. the truth

  335. and not believe it.

  336. To have all

  337. the right answers,

  338. to be able to

  339. recite them,

  340. spit them back

  341. at the ready,

  342. and yet not

  343. have saving

  344. faith

  345. in those

  346. answers.

  347. you can know

  348. the truth

  349. and not hold

  350. the truth

  351. savingly.

  352. Jesus said

  353. to the religious

  354. elites in John

    John 5:39

  355. chapter 5,

  356. verse 39 and 40,

  357. you search the

  358. scriptures

  359. because you

  360. think that

  361. in them

  362. you have

  363. eternal

  364. life.

  365. Aren't there

  366. so many in our

  367. day that would

  368. commend that?

  369. Searching the

  370. scriptures,

  371. what a task.

  372. Yes,

  373. search the

  374. scriptures.

  375. We ought to be

  376. biblically

  377. literate

  378. people

  379. because you

  380. think that

  381. in them

  382. you have

  383. eternal

  384. life.

  385. That they

  386. themselves

  387. are the

  388. source of

  389. eternal

  390. life.

  391. And it

  392. is they,

  393. he goes on,

  394. that bear

  395. witness

  396. about me.

  397. Yet you

  398. refuse to

  399. come to me

  400. that you

  401. may have

  402. life.

  403. Jesus is

  404. not here

  405. devaluing

  406. the Bible

  407. and neither

  408. am I.

  409. It is

  410. God's word.

  411. It is

  412. powerful.

  413. It is taken

  414. up by the

  415. spirit and

  416. used in our

  417. lives to

  418. bring about

  419. regeneration,

  420. sanctification,

  421. our one

  422. day,

  423. glorification.

  424. It is a

  425. powerful tool

  426. but it's

  427. powerful because

  428. it speaks

  429. the message

  430. to us.

  431. It takes

  432. us to

  433. Jesus,

  434. to him,

  435. himself.

  436. They

  437. failed to

  438. see him

  439. in their

  440. knowledge.

  441. They

  442. had become

  443. so puffed

  444. up with

  445. their

  446. understanding

  447. and their

  448. positions

  449. that they

  450. could not,

  451. they were

  452. not even

  453. willing to

  454. entertain the

  455. thought that

  456. Jesus

  457. might be

  458. the

  459. Christ.

  460. They

  461. didn't

  462. skip a

  463. beat.

  464. They

  465. didn't

  466. stop for

  467. a moment

  468. to consider

  469. if he

  470. was in

  471. fact who

  472. he claimed

  473. to be.

  474. Well,

  475. at least

  476. most of

  477. them,

  478. most of

  479. them,

  480. as we'll

  481. see in a

  482. moment.

  483. But before

  484. we do,

  485. note their

  486. disdain for

  487. the ordinary

  488. people's

  489. prideful,

  490. prideful

  491. unbelief.

  492. they say

  493. verse 48,

  494. my summary,

  495. none of

  496. us have

  497. believed in

  498. him,

  499. but this

  500. crowd,

  501. verse 49,

  502. that does

  503. not know

  504. the law

  505. is accursed.

  506. So

  507. spiritually

  508. superior.

  509. We know

  510. the law

  511. and haven't

  512. believed in

  513. him,

  514. so they

  515. must not

  516. know the

  517. law and

  518. therefore

  519. are accursed.

  520. thirst.

  521. You see,

  522. they had

  523. no

  524. recognition

  525. of their

  526. spiritual

  527. thirst.

  528. To be

  529. sure,

  530. their souls

  531. are not

  532. satisfied.

  533. They think

  534. they're

  535. finding it

  536. in this

  537. knowledge,

  538. this position,

  539. this power

  540. that they

  541. held,

  542. but they

  543. are in

  544. fact

  545. spiritually

  546. thirsty.

  547. You know,

  548. most of us

  549. are likely

  550. dehydrated

  551. all the

  552. time.

  553. Very few

  554. of us

  555. probably drink

  556. as much

  557. water as

  558. we possibly

  559. could drink

  560. in a day.

  561. Maybe,

  562. some of you

  563. ladies,

  564. because you've

  565. always got

  566. your water

  567. with you,

  568. are getting

  569. your water

  570. in.

  571. We're often

  572. at varying

  573. degrees of

  574. understanding

  575. of how

  576. really thirsty

  577. we are

  578. physically.

  579. Our

  580. spiritual

  581. thirst will

  582. never be

  583. met

  584. apart from

  585. Christ.

  586. And you

  587. may or

  588. may not

  589. be entirely

  590. aware

  591. of the

  592. longing that

  593. you have

  594. in your

  595. life for

  596. something

  597. more.

  598. It's not

  599. about things

  600. in this

  601. world.

  602. It's not

  603. about

  604. relationships.

  605. It's

  606. about the

  607. Lord Jesus

  608. Christ.

  609. The dryness

  610. of your

  611. soul will

  612. find a

  613. satisfaction

  614. in him.

  615. And they

  616. have no

  617. concern at

  618. all.

  619. This crowd

  620. that does

  621. not know

  622. the law,

  623. prideful,

  624. prideful

  625. unbelief.

  626. May we

  627. not be

  628. counted

  629. amongst

  630. these men.

  631. men.

  632. But notice

  633. thirdly,

  634. the

  635. appropriate

  636. consideration.

  637. Appropriate

  638. consideration.

  639. Jesus has

  640. spoken words

  641. of power.

  642. They ought

  643. to be

  644. considered.

  645. We see a

  646. man do

  647. this

  648. considering.

  649. Verse 50

  650. and 51.

  651. Nicodemus.

  652. Nicodemus,

  653. who had

  654. gone to

  655. him before

  656. and who

  657. was one

  658. of them,

  659. one of

  660. this

  661. council,

  662. said to

  663. them,

  664. yes,

  665. this is

  666. the

  667. Nicodemus

  668. of John

    John 3 chapter mention

  669. chapter 3.

  670. John

  671. wants us

  672. to be

  673. sure that

  674. we don't

  675. miss that

  676. fact with

  677. this phrase,

  678. Nicodemus,

  679. who had

  680. gone to

  681. him before.

  682. He means

  683. for us to

  684. note this.

  685. Oh,

  686. oh,

  687. the one

  688. who had

  689. gone to

  690. him before,

  691. that

  692. Nicodemus?

  693. Yes,

  694. that one,

  695. who had

  696. gone to

  697. Jesus in

  698. secret at

  699. night because

  700. he was

  701. curious.

  702. You may

  703. remember,

  704. he says

  705. to him,

  706. nobody does

  707. these kinds

  708. of things or

  709. speaks this

  710. way if

  711. they're not

  712. from God.

  713. Jesus says

  714. some interesting

  715. things to

  716. him about

  717. being born

  718. again that

  719. Nicodemus doesn't

  720. seem to

  721. understand.

  722. And then he

  723. goes on.

  724. It's to

  725. Nicodemus that

  726. Jesus says,

  727. John 3.

  728. 16.

  729. For God so

  730. loved the

  731. world,

  732. that he

  733. gave his

  734. only son,

  735. that whoever

  736. believes in

  737. him should

  738. not perish

  739. but have

  740. eternal

  741. life.

  742. A lot of

  743. other wonderful,

  744. clear gospel

  745. expressions in

  746. that chapter.

  747. However,

  748. chapter 3

  749. doesn't record

  750. what Nicodemus

  751. does after

  752. this encounter

  753. with Jesus.

  754. John's narrative

  755. just kind of

  756. rushes off

  757. to what's

  758. going on

  759. with John

  760. the Baptist

  761. at the

  762. time.

  763. And Nicodemus

  764. passes from

  765. the page

  766. until chapter

  767. 7.

  768. The very

  769. same

  770. Nicodemus,

  771. a leader

  772. amongst

  773. the Jews.

  774. I'm led to

  775. believe,

  776. because of what

  777. happens here,

  778. that he has

  779. been,

  780. from chapter

  781. 3 until

  782. now,

  783. however much

  784. time has

  785. gone by,

  786. quietly

  787. considering

  788. what Jesus

  789. said to

  790. him.

  791. He's

  792. mulling it

  793. over.

  794. He's

  795. giving it

  796. appropriate

  797. consideration.

  798. He seems,

  799. as we see

  800. him here in

  801. chapter 7,

  802. to still

  803. be doing

  804. so.

  805. He's in

  806. that process

  807. even now.

  808. He brings

  809. up this

  810. question.

  811. He says

  812. to them,

  813. verse 51,

  814. does our

  815. law judge

  816. a man

  817. without first

  818. giving him

  819. a hearing

  820. and learning

  821. what he

  822. does?

  823. We don't

  824. see Nicodemus

  825. openly defending

  826. Jesus' deity

  827. at this point.

  828. He does not

  829. make the case,

  830. oh, but he

  831. is the

  832. Christ.

  833. What might

  834. be stirring

  835. in his

  836. heart,

  837. exactly,

  838. we don't

  839. know.

  840. But he

  841. does raise

  842. a telling

  843. procedural

  844. point.

  845. His

  846. companions

  847. stated that

  848. the crowd

  849. doesn't know

  850. the law

  851. and they

  852. are breaking

  853. it

  854. themselves.

  855. Notice

  856. that?

  857. The accusation

  858. they make

  859. of the

  860. crowd,

  861. right?

  862. They're

  863. ignorant

  864. of the

  865. law,

  866. they're

  867. accursed,

  868. and then

  869. he brings

  870. the law

  871. to bear.

  872. You're

  873. breaking

  874. the law,

  875. is what

  876. he says

  877. to them.

  878. Doesn't

  879. our law

  880. say,

  881. is what

  882. he says

  883. to them.

  884. He's

  885. indicting

  886. them as

  887. men who

  888. do not

  889. practice

  890. the law,

  891. and he

  892. is expressing

  893. that he

  894. is open

  895. to Jesus'

  896. claims.

  897. Isn't it

  898. proper that

  899. we should

  900. give him

  901. a hearing

  902. before we

  903. judge him?

  904. We should

  905. think about

  906. what it

  907. is that

  908. he's

  909. saying.

  910. Why not

  911. hear him

  912. out?

  913. Nicodemus

  914. asks.

  915. So what

  916. becomes of

  917. him?

  918. This is

  919. all we

  920. see here

  921. in chapter

  922. seven.

  923. The man

  924. who first

  925. comes in

  926. secret at

  927. night,

  928. then procedurally

  929. defends Jesus

  930. amongst the

  931. religious leaders.

  932. I am so

  933. grateful that

  934. we know.

  935. Do you

  936. know what

  937. happens in

  938. Nicodemus?

  939. John records

  940. for us in

  941. chapter 19

  942. and verse

  943. 39.

  944. After

  945. Jesus'

  946. crucifixion

  947. and before

  948. his

  949. resurrection,

  950. verse 39

  951. says,

  952. Nicodemus

  953. also,

  954. who earlier

  955. had come to

  956. Jesus by

  957. night.

  958. John's doing

  959. there.

  960. That same

  961. one is what

  962. he's saying.

  963. Remember that

  964. one that

  965. came in

  966. secret?

  967. Who earlier

  968. had come to

  969. Jesus by

  970. night,

  971. came bringing

  972. a mixture

  973. of myrrh

  974. and aloes

  975. about 75

  976. pounds in

  977. weight.

  978. So he

  979. brings the

  980. embalming

  981. spices when

  982. Jesus is taken

  983. down off the

  984. cross.

  985. And there's

  986. this little

  987. detail.

  988. why the

  989. detail,

  990. John?

  991. Why are we

  992. talking about

  993. 75 pounds

  994. of spices?

  995. It's because

  996. John means to

  997. tell us that

  998. he would not

  999. have done this

  1000. by himself.

  1001. This is no

  1002. longer being

  1003. done in

  1004. secret.

  1005. This is Jesus

  1006. being taken

  1007. down off the

  1008. cross.

  1009. This is

  1010. Nicodemus,

  1011. a man of

  1012. stature,

  1013. coming with

  1014. servants in

  1015. the daytime.

  1016. a whole

  1017. parade of

  1018. people coming

  1019. to carry

  1020. this,

  1021. that Jesus

  1022. may be laid

  1023. to rest

  1024. in the

  1025. tomb.

  1026. It's

  1027. phenomenal.

  1028. Nicodemus

  1029. grew in

  1030. grace.

  1031. We get to

  1032. see that.

  1033. John chapter

    John 3 chapter mention

  1034. 3 through

  1035. John chapter

    John 19 chapter mention

  1036. 19.

  1037. One of the

  1038. ones in the

  1039. text that

  1040. receives

  1041. Jesus.

  1042. Now,

  1043. certainly there

  1044. was a point

  1045. of his

  1046. conversion.

  1047. John doesn't

  1048. record that

  1049. for us.

  1050. A point that

  1051. he was

  1052. spiritually dead

  1053. and then

  1054. became

  1055. spiritually

  1056. alive.

  1057. In your

  1058. bulletin,

  1059. the historic

  1060. quote today

  1061. says,

  1062. from Thomas

  1063. Watson,

  1064. to every

  1065. believer,

  1066. the debt

  1067. book is

  1068. crossed out.

  1069. The black

  1070. lines of

  1071. sin are

  1072. crossed out

  1073. in the

  1074. red lines

  1075. of Christ's

  1076. blood.

  1077. There's a

  1078. point at

  1079. which that

  1080. happens.

  1081. You are

  1082. unforgiven

  1083. and now

  1084. you are

  1085. forgiven.

  1086. But I

  1087. think more

  1088. often than

  1089. not,

  1090. people are

  1091. drawn to

  1092. Christ in

  1093. a process.

  1094. I think

  1095. that Nicodemus'

  1096. story ought

  1097. to encourage

  1098. many of

  1099. us who

  1100. didn't find

  1101. ourselves in

  1102. some squalor

  1103. of sin,

  1104. some sin

  1105. that the

  1106. world might

  1107. measure as

  1108. great,

  1109. and then we

  1110. suddenly snapped

  1111. and all of a

  1112. sudden our

  1113. life was

  1114. dramatically

  1115. different after

  1116. the fact,

  1117. but bit

  1118. by bit,

  1119. degree by

  1120. degree,

  1121. here we

  1122. have a

  1123. man who

  1124. was trained

  1125. in the

  1126. Bible,

  1127. who from

  1128. everybody's

  1129. perspective was

  1130. upright,

  1131. who was doing

  1132. everything that

  1133. should be done

  1134. to please

  1135. God,

  1136. and he's

  1137. made curious

  1138. about these

  1139. claims of

  1140. Jesus,

  1141. and he

  1142. approaches

  1143. him first

  1144. shamefully,

  1145. and then he's

  1146. willing to stand

  1147. up for him a

  1148. bit amongst

  1149. his companions,

  1150. and then

  1151. finally a bold

  1152. proclamation that

  1153. he's a follower

  1154. of Jesus at

  1155. his death.

  1156. Now the

  1157. response to

  1158. Nicodemus takes

  1159. us back to the

  1160. second point.

  1161. If you were

  1162. listening carefully,

  1163. you may have

  1164. noted there I

  1165. said verse 52,

  1166. and I didn't say

  1167. anything about it.

  1168. Well, here we

  1169. are now in the

  1170. text.

  1171. prideful

  1172. unbelief.

  1173. They are brutal

  1174. in their response

  1175. to Nicodemus.

  1176. Don't miss

  1177. what's going on

  1178. here.

  1179. I try to read

  1180. it with some

  1181. measure of

  1182. tone, but I

  1183. don't want to

  1184. be an actor,

  1185. so I have to

  1186. dial down the

  1187. way they

  1188. probably sounded.

  1189. They replied,

  1190. are you from

  1191. Galilee too?

  1192. Search and see

  1193. that no prophet

  1194. arises from

  1195. Galilee.

  1196. This is

  1197. mockery.

  1198. They're saying,

  1199. are you defending

  1200. him because you

  1201. are also from

  1202. the sticks?

  1203. You're from the

  1204. country?

  1205. You're a bumpkin

  1206. out there?

  1207. For some reason

  1208. you see the need

  1209. to take up for

  1210. him?

  1211. They know that

  1212. Nicodemus isn't

  1213. from Galilee.

  1214. They're very aware

  1215. of this.

  1216. And then notice

  1217. they say,

  1218. search and see.

  1219. No prophet

  1220. arises from

  1221. Galilee.

  1222. Again, these

  1223. are the religious

  1224. elite.

  1225. These are the

  1226. men who knew

  1227. their Bibles.

  1228. What's really

  1229. interesting at this

  1230. point is that

  1231. there is a

  1232. prophet that

  1233. arises from

  1234. Galilee.

  1235. Jonah undoubtedly

  1236. arises from

  1237. Galilee.

  1238. If they're

  1239. appealing to

  1240. their authority

  1241. in this text,

  1242. at this point

  1243. everybody ought

  1244. to go,

  1245. ah, you

  1246. don't have a

  1247. clue what

  1248. you're talking

  1249. about.

  1250. Yeah.

  1251. If we search

  1252. and see the

  1253. scriptures,

  1254. there is a

  1255. prophet who

  1256. arises from

  1257. Galilee.

  1258. And some

  1259. scholars, there's

  1260. a pretty good

  1261. case to be

  1262. made that

  1263. also Nahum

  1264. and Hosea

  1265. and there's

  1266. some other

  1267. possibilities as

  1268. well.

  1269. but we

  1270. know factually

  1271. Jonah.

  1272. Jonah was

  1273. from Galilee.

  1274. They have no

  1275. idea what

  1276. they're talking

  1277. about.

  1278. They have

  1279. used the

  1280. Bible to

  1281. build platforms

  1282. for themselves.

  1283. They are not

  1284. seeking to

  1285. please the

  1286. Lord.

  1287. They accuse

  1288. Nicodemus of

  1289. being ignorant

  1290. of his Bible.

  1291. Instead,

  1292. their ignorance

  1293. is exposed.

  1294. This is a

  1295. tactic of

  1296. the

  1297. deconstructionists

  1298. of our

  1299. day.

  1300. Those who

  1301. would have

  1302. people who

  1303. once professed

  1304. to be

  1305. Christians no

  1306. longer be

  1307. Christians.

  1308. With great

  1309. confidence,

  1310. they make

  1311. outlandish

  1312. claims about

  1313. the Bible

  1314. and people

  1315. just eat it

  1316. up.

  1317. You've

  1318. probably heard

  1319. people make

  1320. these kinds

  1321. of claims.

  1322. Say things

  1323. that are just

  1324. false about

  1325. the Scripture,

  1326. but they say

  1327. it with such

  1328. confidence,

  1329. no one wants

  1330. to do the

  1331. work to

  1332. actually go

  1333. and see.

  1334. Is that

  1335. something that

  1336. the Bible

  1337. actually says?

  1338. It's

  1339. happening all

  1340. the time.

  1341. Beloved,

  1342. we need to

  1343. confirm and

  1344. defend the

  1345. Scriptures.

  1346. We need the

  1347. people who

  1348. say, no,

  1349. that's not at

  1350. all what's

  1351. happening in

  1352. this grand

  1353. narrative of

  1354. God's redemptive

  1355. work for

  1356. his people.

  1357. Yes, our

  1358. God is full

  1359. of wrath,

  1360. but he's

  1361. also full

  1362. of mercy.

  1363. There's a

  1364. popular

  1365. pastor who

  1366. has suggested

  1367. in our

  1368. gospel

  1369. presentations

  1370. that we

  1371. unhitch the

  1372. gospel from

  1373. the Old

  1374. Testament.

  1375. Unwilling to

  1376. do the work

  1377. of helping

  1378. his people

  1379. understand the

  1380. Old Testament,

  1381. he says,

  1382. let's just do

  1383. away with it

  1384. so that people

  1385. can't object

  1386. any longer

  1387. in this way.

  1388. Confirm

  1389. and defend

  1390. the Scriptures

  1391. for they

  1392. express to

  1393. us our

  1394. God.

  1395. We want to

  1396. know him

  1397. by the book

  1398. that he

  1399. wrote

  1400. and share

  1401. him with

  1402. others.

  1403. So confirm

  1404. and defend

  1405. the Scriptures

  1406. for the glory

  1407. of our God

  1408. and for

  1409. the good

  1410. of people.

  1411. Powerful

  1412. words,

  1413. prideful

  1414. unbelief,

  1415. appropriate

  1416. consideration.

  1417. I'm going to

  1418. pray for us,

  1419. but before I

  1420. do,

  1421. I just want

  1422. to make a

  1423. note.

  1424. I don't

  1425. know how

  1426. many of you

  1427. are paying

  1428. attention to

  1429. our preaching

  1430. schedule.

  1431. We're off

  1432. of it on

  1433. the dates.

  1434. We'll have

  1435. to republish

  1436. that document.

  1437. But if you

  1438. look at your

  1439. text,

  1440. you may

  1441. notice

  1442. some notes,

  1443. some double

  1444. bracketing

  1445. around chapter

  1446. 7,

  1447. verse 53

  1448. through chapter

  1449. 8 and

  1450. verse 11.

  1451. And the

  1452. preaching schedule

  1453. says that I'm

  1454. going to preach

  1455. that text,

  1456. but guess

  1457. what?

  1458. I'm not.

  1459. What we are

  1460. going to do

  1461. is we're going

  1462. to talk about

  1463. textual

  1464. criticism.

  1465. Why it is

  1466. that there's

  1467. double brackets

  1468. around this

  1469. text and

  1470. why I don't

  1471. believe it

  1472. belongs in

  1473. the text

  1474. at all.

  1475. Why?

  1476. Because we

  1477. want to

  1478. confirm and

  1479. defend the

  1480. scriptures for

  1481. the glory of

  1482. our God and

  1483. for the good

  1484. of people.

  1485. So that's

  1486. what we're

  1487. going to

  1488. spend our

  1489. time doing

  1490. next week.

  1491. So we'll

  1492. kind of be

  1493. in John

    John 7:53

  1494. chapter 7

  1495. verse 53

  1496. through chapter

  1497. 8 and

  1498. verse 11.

  1499. How did we

  1500. get our

  1501. Bible?

  1502. Why can we

  1503. be confident

  1504. it is in

  1505. fact God's

  1506. word when we

  1507. have little

  1508. issues like

  1509. this found

  1510. here?

  1511. Let's pray.
