  1. If I decide it's true, then it must be true.

  2. Now, I want to say, there is some strength found here,

  3. and that is that postmoderns don't wholeheartedly accept everything that's thrown their direction.

  4. Postmodern thinkers, even if they see the experts say or the data shows,

  5. are still going to tend to go, yeah, but is that accurate?

  6. Like, show me the methodology at which we arrived at this given truth.

  7. So there is a strength to be found there, and whether or not you want to accept it,

  8. most of you, myself included, are postmodern thinkers.

  9. It's the way we tend to gather information and arrive at conclusions.

  10. Now, just as a little side note, there also is, people are talking now about the post-postmodern era,

  11. I told you everything revolves around modernism.

  12. Post-postmodern, I can't think of a possible strength to it, but time will tell.

  13. Post-postmoderns tend to think that no truth can possibly be arrived at.

  14. The internet and the way the internet functions feeds this type of thinking.

  15. Now, here is the case that I am seeking to make to you.

  16. Why?

  17. Spend any time thinking about this at all.

  18. If we are to know the things that matter most,

  19. all of these methods fail us.

  20. They all have a weakness.

  21. But what must we ultimately know?

  22. Now, if you were to compress, compress all classical apologetics,

  23. take all of the questions that classical apologetics ask,

  24. and compress them down, you could ask four questions.

  25. First, origin.

  26. Where do we come from?

  27. How did we get here?

  28. Second, meaning.

  29. Why are we here?

  30. What is the purpose for our existence?

  31. Third, morality.

  32. How are we to know right and wrong, right from wrong?

  33. And fourth, destiny.

  34. Where are we going?

  35. What happens after this life?

  36. Origin, meaning, morality, destiny.

  37. Four questions that need answers.

  38. In order to rightly answer any of these questions,

  39. here's what I'm saying,

  40. any of these ways of thinking,

  41. any of these epistemologies are going to fail us.

  42. What we need is revelation.

  43. What we need is revelation.

  44. Now, don't hear me arguing against classical apologetics.

  45. I'm a big fan.

  46. But, at the end of the day,

  47. we need spirit-discerned understanding of the Bible.

  48. We need the spirit to work in us to confirm that it is, in fact, God's Word,

  49. and that everything that it says is true.

  50. It's inerrant in that it doesn't err,

  51. and it's infallible in that it can't err,

  52. because it is God's Word.

  53. If you know the answers to any of my aforementioned questions,

  54. I hope that you did.

  55. I hope that your mind started accessing information to those questions.

  56. Praise God that you do.

  57. We have no reason to boast.

  58. God has taught us any meaningful, right answers to those questions.

  59. If you do not,

  60. pray that God would open the eyes of your heart to discern your origin,

  61. your worth,

  62. God's good commands,

  63. and your final destiny.

  64. I said that we live in a day of post-modernism.

  65. It's the water that we swim in,

  66. and too sadly we've seen lots of what's called deconstruction in the church.

  67. To be clear, the people who deconstruct their faith never really believed in Jesus to begin with.

  68. But this problem is partly a problem of their mind.

  69. They see something that they don't like about Christianity.

  70. Whether fair or not,

  71. there are some fair objections to the Christianity that we can observe,

  72. and they begin to walk it back and to unravel it,

  73. peace by peace by peace.

  74. Pray for spiritual discernment.

  75. Pray for spiritual discernment this morning,

  76. that we might rightly behold the Jesus of the Bible.

  77. So let's pray together to that end.

  78. Father God, we humbly recognize,

  79. that as I have laid out the way in which people have thought,

  80. that the curse of this world has also affected our thinking faculty.

  81. None of us think as clearly as we think we do,

  82. or ought to.

  83. But we also recognize that we need the revelation of your Spirit

  84. to help us understand the words of the Scripture,

  85. to believe that they're true,

  86. and to respond accordingly to them.

  87. We want this morning to rightly understand your Word.

  88. We humbly recognize it was written,

  89. ultimately, for your glory,

  90. and also for our good.

  91. And so pray that you would help us to this end.

  92. Amen.

  93. John 8, beginning in verse 12.

  94. Again, Jesus spoke to them, saying,

  95. I am the light of the world.

  96. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness,

  97. but will have the light of life.

  98. So the Pharisee said to him,

  99. You are bearing witness about yourself.

  100. Your testimony is not true.

  101. Jesus answered,

  102. Even if I do bear witness about myself,

  103. my testimony is true,

  104. for I know where I came from and where I am going.

  105. But you do not know where I come from or where I am going.

  106. You judge according to the flesh.

  107. I judge no one.

  108. Yet even if I do judge,

  109. my judgment is true,

  110. for it is not I alone who judge,

  111. but I and the Father who sent me.

  112. In your law it is written

  113. that the testimony of two people is true.

  114. I am the one who bears witness about myself,

  115. and the Father who sent me bears witness about me.

  116. They said to him,

  117. Therefore,

  118. Where is your Father?

  119. Jesus answered,

  120. You know neither me nor my Father.

  121. If you knew me,

  122. you would know my Father also.

  123. These words he spoke in the treasury

  124. as he taught in the temple,

  125. but no one arrested him

  126. because his hour had not yet come.

  127. Now let's first take a look

  128. at the setting of this passage.

  129. I made the case some weeks ago

  130. that I do not believe,

  131. and I am in good company

  132. in believing so,

  133. that chapter 7, verse 53,

  134. through chapter 8, verse 11,

  135. belong in the text

  136. as these verses are not

  137. in the early and most reliable manuscripts.

  138. I think they should be footnoted.

  139. I said when we talked about it,

  140. you are welcome to disagree with me,

  141. but I told you why

  142. we would not preach that text.

  143. I only preach the Bible.

  144. So,

  145. that purpose,

  146. but also because

  147. the literary structure

  148. of John's gospel

  149. trends me off

  150. in this direction.

  151. So,

  152. note with me just for a moment

  153. what is happening.

  154. Early in chapter 7,

  155. Jesus has traveled to Jerusalem

  156. and taught in the temple,

  157. causing a stir

  158. amongst the people.

  159. So,

  160. notice in John 7,

  161. and verse 30,

  162. So,

  163. they,

  164. this is the Jews,

  165. John refers to,

  166. were seeking

  167. to arrest him,

  168. but no one laid a hand on him

  169. because his hour

  170. had not yet come.

  171. We see this repeated

  172. as the fervency

  173. of this conflict

  174. over who Jesus is

  175. rises.

  176. There's these attempts

  177. to arrest him,

  178. but his hour

  179. had not yet come.

  180. If you doubt

  181. at any moment

  182. that God governs

  183. over the affairs

  184. of man,

  185. doubt it no more.

  186. Read through John

  187. and see how often

  188. there's a divine timeline

  189. taking place

  190. in the text.

  191. And you can read

  192. a little bit further down

  193. in verse 32,

  194. The Pharisees

  195. heard the crowd

  196. muttering these things

  197. about him,

  198. and the chief priests

  199. and Pharisees

  200. sent officers

  201. to arrest him.

  202. And it's in this setting,

  203. they're seeking him,

  204. we read in verse 37,

  205. On the last day

  206. of the feast,

  207. the great day,

  208. Jesus stood up

  209. and cried out,

  210. If anyone thirsts,

  211. let him come to me

  212. and drink.

  213. And so a division arises

  214. amongst the people

  215. over him,

  216. verse 43.

  217. Some of them

  218. wanted to arrest him,

  219. but no one

  220. laid hands on him.

  221. And we know

  222. contextually why,

  223. because his hour

  224. had not yet come.

  225. But in verse 45,

  226. those officers

  227. that were sent

  228. back in verse 32

  229. come to the chief priests

  230. and Pharisees

  231. who said to them,

  232. Why did you not

  233. bring him?

  234. And their response is,

  235. Because no one speaks

  236. like this man.

  237. They're not sure

  238. what to do

  239. with him.

  240. Now remember,

  241. I'm making the case

  242. that the internal evidence,

  243. the context of what's going on,

  244. I think places Jesus

  245. still in this setting.

  246. This report has gone

  247. to the chief priests

  248. and to the Pharisees.

  249. And then we pick up

  250. verse 20,

  251. These words,

  252. He spoke in the treasury

  253. as he taught

  254. in the temple.

  255. But no one arrested him

  256. because his hour

  257. had not yet come.

  258. Verse 12,

  259. Again Jesus spoke

  260. to them,

  261. saying,

  262. Now we do not get

  263. any indication

  264. of how much

  265. time has passed

  266. from this

  267. last day of the feast

  268. Jesus cries out,

  269. If anyone thirsts,

  270. let him come to me

  271. and drink.

  272. And then verse 12

  273. where he makes

  274. this other statement.

  275. But I think that we are

  276. meant to read it

  277. tightly connected

  278. to all that has

  279. happened previously.

  280. And so,

  281. I want to spend

  282. a little bit of time

  283. reminding you

  284. how culturally charged

  285. this week was.

  286. I don't think

  287. that we need to hear

  288. Jesus saying,

  289. I am the light

  290. of the world

  291. far removed

  292. from this week,

  293. the week of

  294. the Feast of Booths.

  295. So briefly,

  296. this is what I shared

  297. with you previously

  298. about the feast.

  299. The Feast of Booths

  300. was one of three

  301. great pilgrimage

  302. feasts of Israel.

  303. Every Jewish male

  304. was expected

  305. to go up to Jerusalem.

  306. It occurred in the fall

  307. after the harvest

  308. and it lasted

  309. seven days

  310. followed by

  311. a solemn

  312. eighth day.

  313. During his feast,

  314. the people of Israel

  315. lived in temporary

  316. shelters or booths,

  317. some of your Bibles

  318. may say tabernacles,

  319. made of branches.

  320. They did this

  321. to remember

  322. how their fathers

  323. had lived in tents

  324. during the wilderness

  325. wanderings after the Exodus.

  326. But this feast

  327. was more than just

  328. a history lesson.

  329. It was a celebration

  330. of God's provision,

  331. God's presence,

  332. and God's promises.

  333. It looked backward

  334. to the wilderness

  335. where God provided

  336. food from heaven

  337. and water from the rock.

  338. It looked upward

  339. in thanksgiving

  340. for the harvest

  341. God had just given,

  342. this present provision.

  343. And it looked forward

  344. in hope to the day

  345. when God would again

  346. dwell with his people

  347. in glory.

  348. It was a week

  349. just packed full

  350. of meaning.

  351. The Old Testament

  352. gives few instructions

  353. for what this feast

  354. must look like,

  355. but they had developed

  356. some tradition

  357. that had rich

  358. ceremonial meaning.

  359. Two rituals

  360. in particular

  361. dominated

  362. the celebration.

  363. First,

  364. there was the water

  365. ceremony.

  366. Each of the first

  367. six days,

  368. a priest would draw

  369. water from the

  370. pool of Siloam

  371. and lead a procession

  372. back to the temple.

  373. As they approached

  374. the water gate

  375. on the south side

  376. of the inner court,

  377. a shofar would be

  378. blown three times

  379. as a pronouncement

  380. of joy,

  381. and the people

  382. would recite

  383. Isaiah 12,

    Isaiah 12:3

  384. verse 3.

  385. With joy,

  386. you will draw water

  387. from the wells

  388. of salvation.

  389. Significant text.

  390. While the people

  391. watched,

  392. the priest would

  393. march around the

  394. altar while the

  395. singing of the

  396. Hillel was led

  397. by the temple

  398. choir.

  399. And this is

  400. Psalm 113

  401. through 118.

  402. And back when we

  403. were in that text,

  404. I read the entirety

  405. of that to you.

  406. It was quite an

  407. ordeal that they

  408. went through.

  409. At the conclusion

  410. of the singing,

  411. the people would

  412. all cry out

  413. three times,

  414. give thanks to

  415. the Lord,

  416. and the water

  417. was poured

  418. onto the altar.

  419. This ceremony

  420. commemorated the

  421. water God

  422. provided in the

  423. wilderness and

  424. expressed hope

  425. for the coming

  426. messianic age

  427. when God would

  428. pour out his

  429. spirit.

  430. Second,

  431. there was an

  432. illumination ceremony.

  433. Massive lamps

  434. were lit in the

  435. temple courts,

  436. casting light

  437. over the city,

  438. and people would

  439. dance in the

  440. temple.

  441. This recalled the

  442. pillar of fire that

  443. guided Israel through

  444. the wilderness and

  445. symbolized the hope

  446. that God's glory

  447. would again shine

  448. upon his people.

  449. So the Feast of

  450. Booths was a

  451. celebration of

  452. light, life,

  453. provision, and

  454. divine presence.

  455. And it's into

  456. this setting,

  457. charged with

  458. expectation,

  459. saturated with

  460. symbolism,

  461. overflowing with

  462. religious meaning,

  463. that Jesus

  464. steps.

  465. Jesus.

  466. What makes all of

  467. this so striking

  468. is that Jesus

  469. does not merely

  470. attend the

  471. feast, as his

  472. brothers requested

  473. of him at the

  474. beginning of the

  475. chapter, but he

  476. interprets the

  477. feast.

  478. He says, this is

  479. what all of this

  480. really means.

  481. He takes the

  482. central symbols of

  483. Israel's hope and

  484. claims to be their

  485. fulfillment.

  486. He says, I, I am

  487. actually the hope

  488. that this is all

  489. about.

  490. So, with all of

  491. that, for our

  492. text, I've got a

  493. three-point outline

  494. for you.

  495. Number one,

  496. Jesus is the

  497. light.

  498. We see this in

  499. verse 12, and

  500. we will spend

  501. most of our

  502. time here, so

  503. if you're a

  504. clock watcher,

  505. don't fret.

  506. First point will

  507. take up the

  508. majority of our

  509. time.

  510. Again, Jesus

  511. spoke to them

  512. saying, I am

  513. the light of

  514. the world.

  515. Whoever follows

  516. me will not

  517. walk in darkness,

  518. but will have

  519. the light of

  520. life.

  521. Can you just

  522. imagine him

  523. saying that with

  524. everything that

  525. would have

  526. happened in the

  527. preceding week?

  528. Once again, I

  529. don't think we're

  530. very far away

  531. from that.

  532. So, these

  533. people have been

  534. thinking about

  535. light in a very

  536. particular way,

  537. thinking about

  538. God's presence,

  539. the hope that

  540. will come, and

  541. then Jesus says

  542. this.

  543. This is the

  544. first time that

  545. Jesus has used

  546. the light

  547. metaphor to

  548. speak of

  549. himself in

  550. John's gospel.

  551. This is the

  552. second of

  553. Jesus' seven

  554. I am

  555. statements in

  556. John.

  557. He has

  558. declared, I am

  559. the bread of

  560. life in chapter

  561. six, and

  562. here he says,

  563. I am the

  564. light of the

  565. world.

  566. Now, I want to

  567. read to you

  568. something brief

  569. from D.A.

  570. Carson's

  571. commentary on

  572. this.

  573. If you like to

  574. study things

  575. deeply, I would

  576. really recommend

  577. this particular

  578. commentary to

  579. you.

  580. He says this,

  581. the light

  582. metaphor is

  583. steeped in

  584. Old Testament

  585. allusions.

  586. I'm reading

  587. this to you

  588. because their

  589. minds would

  590. have been very

  591. alive as he

  592. says this.

  593. The glory of

  594. the very

  595. presence of

  596. God in the

  597. cloud led

  598. the people in

  599. the promised

  600. land, Exodus

  601. 13, and

  602. protected them

  603. from those who

  604. would destroy

  605. them, Exodus

  606. 14.

  607. The Israelites

  608. were trained

  609. to sing,

  610. The Lord is

  611. my light and

  612. my salvation,

  613. Psalm 27,

    Psalms 27:1

  614. verse 1.

  615. The word of

  616. God, the law

  617. of God, is a

  618. light to guide

  619. the path of

  620. those who

  621. cherish

  622. instruction,

  623. Psalm 119,

  624. Proverbs 6,

  625. 23.

  626. God's light

  627. is shed

  628. abroad in

  629. Revelation,

  630. Ezekiel 1,

    Ezekiel 1:4

  631. verse 4,

  632. verse 13,

  633. and verse 26

  634. through 28,

  635. and salvation,

  636. Habakkuk 3,

    Habakkuk 3:3–4

  637. verse 3

  638. through 4.

  639. Light is

  640. Yahweh in

  641. action,

  642. Psalm 44,

    Psalms 44:3

  643. verse 3.

  644. Isaiah tells

  645. us that the

  646. servant of the

  647. Lord was

  648. appointed as

  649. a light to

  650. the Gentiles,

  651. that he might

  652. bring God's

  653. salvation to

  654. the ends of

  655. all the earth,

  656. Isaiah 49,

    Isaiah 49:6

  657. verse 6.

  658. The coming

  659. eschatological

  660. age would be

  661. a time when

  662. the Lord

  663. himself would

  664. be the light

  665. for his

  666. people.

  667. Isaiah

    Isaiah 60 chapter mention

  668. chapter 60,

  669. Revelation

    Revelation 21 chapter mention

  670. chapter 21.

  671. Perhaps

  672. Zechariah

  673. 14 is

  674. especially

  675. significant with

  676. its promise

  677. of continual

  678. light on

  679. the last

  680. day,

  681. followed by

  682. the promise

  683. of living

  684. waters flowing

  685. from Jerusalem.

  686. This passage

  687. probably forming

  688. part of the

  689. liturgical

  690. readings of

  691. this feast.

  692. Christ.

  693. The great

  694. burning lights

  695. of the

  696. feast of

  697. tabernacles

  698. resonate with

  699. such

  700. strains.

  701. It's into

  702. that that

  703. Jesus

  704. says this.

  705. But this

  706. is not the

  707. first time

  708. that we have

  709. heard this

  710. metaphor in

  711. John's

  712. writings.

  713. Turn back

  714. to John

    John 1 chapter mention

  715. chapter 1.

  716. John begins

  717. this work.

  718. In the

  719. beginning

  720. was the

  721. Word,

  722. and the

  723. Word was

  724. with God,

  725. and the

  726. Word was

  727. God.

  728. He was in

  729. the beginning

  730. with God.

  731. All things

  732. were made

  733. through him,

  734. and without

  735. him was not

  736. anything made

  737. that was

  738. made.

  739. In him

  740. was life,

  741. and the

  742. life was

  743. the light

  744. of men.

  745. The light

  746. shines in

  747. the darkness,

  748. and the

  749. darkness has

  750. not overcome

  751. it.

  752. light.

  753. Our minds

  754. ought to be

  755. full as

  756. we hear

  757. Jesus say

  758. that he

  759. is the

  760. light of

  761. the world.

  762. The word

  763. light appears

  764. 24 times in

  765. John's

  766. gospel.

  767. Light by

  768. its nature

  769. causes

  770. darkness

  771. to scatter.

  772. Darkness

  773. cannot be

  774. quantifiably

  775. measured.

  776. It is

  777. merely

  778. the absence

  779. of light.

  780. Now,

  781. we tend

  782. to take

  783. light for

  784. granted,

  785. but if you

  786. lived in a

  787. time when

  788. the only

  789. source of

  790. light was

  791. from a

  792. flame,

  793. and it

  794. was dangerous

  795. to not

  796. have light

  797. at night,

  798. this is

  799. when children

  800. were snatched

  801. out of tents

  802. by wild

  803. animals.

  804. This is

  805. when the

  806. marauders

  807. came at

  808. night.

  809. We have

  810. a property

  811. north of

  812. Dahlonega,

  813. and it is

  814. really,

  815. really dark

  816. out there

  817. at night.

  818. And these

  819. days,

  820. I've got

  821. a flashlight

  822. in my

  823. back pocket

  824. all of

  825. the time.

  826. But I can

  827. remember

  828. earlier days

  829. when my

  830. parents owned

  831. the property,

  832. being out

  833. there and

  834. having to

  835. get from

  836. the driveway

  837. to the

  838. top of

  839. our driveway

  840. where I

  841. typically

  842. park,

  843. and I

  844. had to

  845. do it

  846. by shuffling

  847. my feet

  848. on the

  849. gravel,

  850. and if

  851. my feet

  852. stopped

  853. making

  854. gravel

  855. sounds,

  856. I knew

  857. I was

  858. off into

  859. the woods,

  860. and I

  861. had to

  862. go back

  863. to the

  864. gravel

  865. and shuffle

  866. my feet

  867. and just

  868. stumble

  869. toward my

  870. vehicle until

  871. I ran

  872. into it.

  873. It would

  874. be that

  875. dark.

  876. And I

  877. must admit,

  878. there were

  879. times that

  880. things snapped

  881. in the woods,

  882. and I

  883. got a little

  884. scared and

  885. moved a

  886. little quicker

  887. up that

  888. dark,

  889. dark

  890. driveway.

  891. It would

  892. have likely

  893. been more

  894. felt than

  895. it maybe

  896. is felt

  897. for us.

  898. Where there

  899. is light,

  900. there is

  901. not

  902. darkness.

  903. The two

  904. are opposites,

  905. and one

  906. has expulsory

  907. power over

  908. the other.

  909. Now,

  910. if we

  911. back up

  912. in a

  913. bit from

  914. our text,

  915. but go

  916. forward from

  917. John 1

  918. to chapter

  919. 3,

  920. we can

  921. see this

  922. idea at

  923. work in

  924. the negative.

  925. John 3

  926. in verse

  927. 20.

  928. For

  929. everyone who

  930. does wicked

  931. things,

  932. hates the

  933. light,

  934. and does

  935. not come

  936. to the

  937. light,

  938. lest his

  939. works

  940. should be

  941. exposed.

  942. Wickedness

  943. is associated

  944. with darkness

  945. in this

  946. text.

  947. A darkness

  948. that does

  949. not want

  950. the exposure

  951. of light.

  952. Wickedness

  953. produces shame,

  954. and it

  955. produces

  956. death.

  957. It is the

  958. opposite,

  959. the antithesis

  960. of the

  961. light of

  962. life.

  963. Let's

  964. push the

  965. metaphor just

  966. a bit

  967. further and

  968. a bit

  969. clearer.

  970. Note

  971. especially

  972. who the

  973. light

  974. is.

  975. It's in

  976. our text

  977. that Jesus

  978. says he

  979. is the

  980. light

  981. of

  982. the

  983. world.

  984. Then go

  985. forward to

  986. John chapter

    John 11:9

  987. 11,

  988. verse 9 and

  989. following.

  990. Jesus said,

  991. are there not

  992. twelve hours in

  993. the day?

  994. If anyone

  995. walks in the

  996. day,

  997. he does not

  998. stumble because

  999. he sees the

  1000. light of this

  1001. world.

  1002. But if anyone

  1003. walks in the

  1004. night,

  1005. he stumbles

  1006. because the

  1007. light is

  1008. not in

  1009. him.

  1010. I suggest

  1011. to you that

  1012. the stumbling

  1013. that Jesus

  1014. here refers

  1015. to is not

  1016. a slight

  1017. trip,

  1018. but a

  1019. stumble that

  1020. causes one

  1021. to fall

  1022. headlong

  1023. and not

  1024. rise again.

  1025. Back to

  1026. John chapter

    John 1:9

  1027. 1,

  1028. verse 9 and

  1029. following.

  1030. John there

  1031. writes,

  1032. the true

  1033. light which

  1034. gives light

  1035. to everyone

  1036. was coming

  1037. into the

  1038. world.

  1039. He was in

  1040. the world

  1041. and the

  1042. world was

  1043. made through

  1044. him,

  1045. yet the

  1046. world did

  1047. not know

  1048. him.

  1049. He came

  1050. to his

  1051. own and

  1052. his own

  1053. people did

  1054. not receive

  1055. him.

  1056. But to

  1057. all who

  1058. did receive

  1059. him,

  1060. who believed

  1061. in his

  1062. name,

  1063. he gave

  1064. the right

  1065. to become

  1066. children of

  1067. God,

  1068. who were

  1069. born,

  1070. not of

  1071. blood,

  1072. nor of

  1073. the will

  1074. of the

  1075. flesh,

  1076. nor of

  1077. the will

  1078. of man,

  1079. but of

  1080. God.

  1081. John at

  1082. the outset

  1083. sets forth

  1084. the problem

  1085. of

  1086. humanity.

  1087. Jesus

  1088. Christ came

  1089. into the

  1090. world,

  1091. he is

  1092. the light,

  1093. and yet

  1094. he will

  1095. be rejected

  1096. by some

  1097. and received

  1098. by others.

  1099. I'm positive

  1100. to you that

  1101. we see this

  1102. pattern exist

  1103. all throughout

  1104. John.

  1105. Those who

  1106. receive and

  1107. those who

  1108. reject.

  1109. One to

  1110. eternal

  1111. damnation,

  1112. one to

  1113. eternal

  1114. glory.

  1115. He sets

  1116. it out

  1117. as a

  1118. dichotomous

  1119. problem,

  1120. as one

  1121. or the

  1122. other.

  1123. No shade

  1124. in between.

  1125. We have

  1126. light and

  1127. we have

  1128. darkness.

  1129. So Jesus

  1130. asks people

  1131. to come

  1132. to him,

  1133. and he

  1134. gives us

  1135. the ability

  1136. to come

  1137. to him.

  1138. He births

  1139. in us,

  1140. born not

  1141. of blood,

  1142. or will

  1143. of the

  1144. flesh,

  1145. or the

  1146. will of

  1147. man,

  1148. but of

  1149. God.

  1150. He makes

  1151. these things

  1152. spiritually

  1153. discernible

  1154. to us

  1155. that we

  1156. would receive

  1157. Jesus as

  1158. he presents

  1159. himself here

  1160. in John's

  1161. gospel.

  1162. He says

  1163. in verse

  1164. 12,

  1165. whoever

  1166. follows me

  1167. will not

  1168. walk in

  1169. darkness,

  1170. but will

  1171. have the

  1172. light of

  1173. life.

  1174. And this

  1175. is what

  1176. Jesus'

  1177. words are

  1178. pressing us

  1179. to,

  1180. as original

  1181. hearers

  1182. hear,

  1183. and us

  1184. today,

  1185. that we

  1186. would follow

  1187. him,

  1188. that we

  1189. would walk

  1190. in his

  1191. ways,

  1192. that we

  1193. might not

  1194. walk in

  1195. darkness,

  1196. but have

  1197. the light

  1198. of life.

  1199. Spurgeon

  1200. once said

  1201. this,

  1202. this is in

  1203. your bulletin

  1204. if you

  1205. care to

  1206. follow along,

  1207. as a

  1208. preacher,

  1209. Jesus

  1210. was

  1211. luminous.

  1212. He

  1213. expounded

  1214. the spirituality

  1215. of the law,

  1216. light

  1217. penetrated

  1218. the precept

  1219. through and

  1220. through as

  1221. he made

  1222. the very

  1223. essence

  1224. of purity

  1225. apparent.

  1226. His light

  1227. cleared the

  1228. law of the

  1229. mist and

  1230. fogs that

  1231. the rabbinical

  1232. writers had

  1233. gathered around

  1234. it.

  1235. He shed

  1236. light,

  1237. too,

  1238. upon the

  1239. covenant

  1240. of grace.

  1241. He

  1242. promulgated

  1243. the gospel

  1244. of peace

  1245. among the

  1246. sons of

  1247. men.

  1248. He told

  1249. of God

  1250. the Father

  1251. willing to

  1252. receive his

  1253. prodigal

  1254. children back

  1255. into his

  1256. bosom.

  1257. His

  1258. parables

  1259. threw

  1260. wondrous

  1261. light upon

  1262. the

  1263. dispensation

  1264. of the

  1265. kingdom of

  1266. heaven.

  1267. His

  1268. counsels

  1269. and his

  1270. cautions

  1271. brought the

  1272. final

  1273. destinies

  1274. of the

  1275. righteous

  1276. and the

  1277. wicked

  1278. into

  1279. full

  1280. view.

  1281. Jesus

  1282. says,

  1283. I am

  1284. the light

  1285. of the

  1286. world.

  1287. Whoever

  1288. follows me

  1289. will not

  1290. walk in

  1291. darkness,

  1292. but will

  1293. have

  1294. the

  1295. light

  1296. of

  1297. life.

  1298. Secondly,

  1299. we see,

  1300. and briefly,

  1301. Jesus is

  1302. the

  1303. trustworthy

  1304. witness.

  1305. We see

  1306. this in

  1307. verses

  1308. 13 and

  1309. 14 as

  1310. well as

  1311. verses

  1312. 18 and

  1313. 19.

  1314. If you

  1315. are new

  1316. to our

  1317. study of

  1318. John,

  1319. the reason

  1320. we're

  1321. seeing this

  1322. point split

  1323. apart like

  1324. this is

  1325. because the

  1326. text is

  1327. a

  1328. chiasm.

  1329. It sure

  1330. is.

  1331. We won't

  1332. spend a

  1333. lot of

  1334. time on

  1335. that today.

  1336. But you

  1337. know,

  1338. verse 13

  1339. and 14,

  1340. so the

  1341. Pharisees

  1342. said to

  1343. him,

  1344. you are

  1345. bearing

  1346. witness

  1347. about

  1348. yourself.

  1349. Your

  1350. testimony

  1351. is not

  1352. true.

  1353. This is

  1354. their

  1355. response

  1356. to him

  1357. saying,

  1358. I am

  1359. the light

  1360. of the

  1361. world.

  1362. Whoever

  1363. follows

  1364. me

  1365. will

  1366. not

  1367. walk

  1368. in

  1369. darkness,

  1370. but

  1371. will

  1372. have

  1373. the

  1374. light

  1375. of

  1376. life.

  1377. The

  1378. place

  1379. that

  1380. he's

  1381. doing

  1382. this

  1383. would

  1384. have

  1385. been

  1386. one

  1387. of

  1388. the

  1389. outer

  1390. parts

  1391. of the

  1392. country

  1393. and

  1394. they

  1395. could

  1396. likely

  1397. overhear

  1398. him.

  1399. The

  1400. council

  1401. that's

  1402. meeting

  1403. and

  1404. gathering

  1405. can

  1406. overhear

  1407. him

  1408. make

  1409. this

  1410. claim.

  1411. And

  1412. their

  1413. response

  1414. has

  1415. nothing

  1416. to do

  1417. with

  1418. what

  1419. he's

  1420. saying

  1421. except

  1422. that

  1423. he

  1424. has

  1425. said,

  1426. I

  1427. am

  1428. claiming

  1429. equality

  1430. with

  1431. God.

  1432. They

  1433. say,

  1434. you

  1435. are

  1436. bearing

  1437. witness

  1438. about

  1439. yourself.

  1440. Your

  1441. testimony

  1442. is

  1443. not

  1444. true.

  1445. And

  1446. Jesus

  1447. answers

  1448. them,

  1449. even

  1450. if I

  1451. do

  1452. bear

  1453. witness

  1454. about

  1455. myself,

  1456. my

  1457. testimony

  1458. is

  1459. true,

  1460. for I

  1461. know

  1462. where

  1463. I

  1464. came

  1465. from

  1466. and

  1467. where

  1468. I

  1469. am

  1470. going,

  1471. but

  1472. you

  1473. do

  1474. not

  1475. know

  1476. where

  1477. I

  1478. come

  1479. from

  1480. or

  1481. where

  1482. I

  1483. am

  1484. going.

  1485. The

  1486. first

  1487. reason

  1488. that

  1489. Jesus

  1490. is

  1491. the

  1492. trustworthy

  1493. witness,

  1494. this may

  1495. be

  1496. unsatisfying

  1497. to some

  1498. of you

  1499. who

  1500. may

  1501. not

  1502. yet

  1503. believe

  1504. in

  1505. Christ,

  1506. but

  1507. yet

  1508. it's

  1509. here.

  1510. The

  1511. reason

  1512. is

  1513. he

  1514. is

  1515. God.

  1516. He's

  1517. a

  1518. trustworthy

  1519. witness

  1520. because

  1521. he

  1522. is

  1523. God.

  1524. He

  1525. originated

  1526. in

  1527. heaven

  1528. and

  1529. he

  1530. was

  1531. going

  1532. to

  1533. heaven.

  1534. Fully

  1535. aware

  1536. of

  1537. who

  1538. he

  1539. is.

  1540. He

  1541. can

  1542. bear

  1543. witness

  1544. to

  1545. himself.

  1546. He

  1547. says

  1548. this,

  1549. I am

  1550. the

  1551. one,

  1552. verse

  1553. 18,

  1554. who

  1555. bears

  1556. witness

  1557. about

  1558. myself

  1559. and

  1560. the

  1561. father

  1562. who

  1563. sent

  1564. me

  1565. bears

  1566. witness

  1567. about

  1568. me.

  1569. This

  1570. is

  1571. in

  1572. response

  1573. to

  1574. what

  1575. they

  1576. were

  1577. asking

  1578. of

  1579. him,

  1580. right?

  1581. You

  1582. can't

  1583. just

  1584. say

  1585. this

  1586. about

  1587. yourself.

  1588. You

  1589. need

  1590. at

  1591. least

  1592. two

  1593. people

  1594. to

  1595. say

  1596. this

  1597. about

  1598. yourself.

  1599. Jesus

  1600. affirms

  1601. this

  1602. in

  1603. verse

  1604. 17.

  1605. So I

  1606. do

  1607. bear

  1608. witness

  1609. about

  1610. myself,

  1611. but also

  1612. the

  1613. father

  1614. who

  1615. sent

  1616. me

  1617. bears

  1618. witness

  1619. about

  1620. me.

  1621. This is the

  1622. second

  1623. reason.

  1624. God the

  1625. father

  1626. is the

  1627. second

  1628. witness.

  1629. God the

  1630. to

  1631. God the

  1632. man

  1633. to

  1634. God the

  1635. man

  1636. to

  1637. make

  1638. a

  1639. convincing

  1640. argument.

  1641. I

  1642. want to

  1643. twist

  1644. somebody's

  1645. arm

  1646. up

  1647. behind

  1648. their

  1649. back

  1650. and

  1651. say

  1652. accept

  1653. Jesus

  1654. as

  1655. the

  1656. Christ.

  1657. But

  1658. here

  1659. is

  1660. Jesus'

  1661. answer

  1662. and

  1663. it's

  1664. where

  1665. my

  1666. mind

  1667. goes

  1668. epistemological.

  1669. How do

  1670. we

  1671. arrive

  1672. at

  1673. the

  1674. truths

  1675. that

  1676. we

  1677. know

  1678. we

  1679. must

  1680. must

  1681. spiritually

  1682. discern

  1683. them.

  1684. The

  1685. evidence

  1686. is all

  1687. here

  1688. but we

  1689. need

  1690. help

  1691. to

  1692. see

  1693. it

  1694. and

  1695. faith

  1696. to

  1697. grab

  1698. hold

  1699. of

  1700. it

  1701. in

  1702. a

  1703. saving

  1704. way.

  1705. His

  1706. father

  1707. is

  1708. the

  1709. second

  1710. witness.

  1711. Last

  1712. week

  1713. Zachary

  1714. preached

  1715. from

  1716. Matthew

    Matthew 3 chapter mention

  1717. chapter

  1718. 3

  1719. concerning

  1720. Jesus'

  1721. baptism.

  1722. If

  1723. you

  1724. missed

  1725. it

  1726. I

  1727. really

  1728. encourage

  1729. you

  1730. to

  1731. give

  1732. it

  1733. a

  1734. !

  1735. listen.

  1736. I

  1737. think

  1738. you'll

  1739. really

  1740. appreciate

  1741. it.

  1742. You

  1743. did a

  1744. great

  1745. job

  1746. with

  1747. that

  1748. text.

  1749. He

  1750. spoke

  1751. well

  1752. of

  1753. God

  1754. the

  1755. father's

  1756. confirmation

  1757. that

  1758. Jesus

  1759. is

  1760. the

  1761. Christ.

  1762. We

  1763. see

  1764. in

  1765. that

  1766. text

  1767. the

  1768. spirit

  1769. of

  1770. God

  1771. descends

  1772. like

  1773. a

  1774. dove

  1775. rests

  1776. on

  1777. Jesus

  1778. and

  1779. then

  1780. from

  1781. heaven

  1782. the

  1783. father

  1784. says

  1785. this

  1786. is

  1787. my

  1788. beloved

  1789. son

  1790. with

  1791. whom

  1792. I

  1793. am

  1794. well

  1795. pleased.

  1796. We

  1797. find

  1798. that

  1799. similarly

  1800. in

  1801. John

  1802. although

  1803. not

  1804. the

  1805. details

  1806. of

  1807. it.

  1808. There

  1809. we

  1810. see

  1811. John

  1812. the

  1813. Baptist

  1814. in

  1815. verse

  1816. 32

  1817. of

  1818. chapter

  1819. 1

  1820. bearing

  1821. witness

  1822. I

  1823. saw

  1824. the

  1825. spirit

  1826. descend

  1827. from

  1828. heaven

  1829. like

  1830. a

  1831. dove

  1832. and

  1833. it

  1834. remained

  1835. on

  1836. him.

  1837. So

  1838. Jesus

  1839. makes

  1840. this

  1841. claim

  1842. the

  1843. father

  1844. who

  1845. sent

  1846. me

  1847. bears

  1848. witness

  1849. about

  1850. me

  1851. and

  1852. you

  1853. may

  1854. find

  1855. some

  1856. sympathy

  1857. here

  1858. with

  1859. the

  1860. Pharisees

  1861. he

  1862. !

  1863. can

  1864. say

  1865. anything

  1866. he

  1867. wants

  1868. to

  1869. about

  1870. himself

  1871. but

  1872. this

  1873. had

  1874. happened

  1875. the

  1876. spirit

  1877. had

  1878. descended

  1879. God

  1880. had

  1881. spoken

  1882. from

  1883. heaven

  1884. about

  1885. Jesus

  1886. and

  1887. this

  1888. was

  1889. known

  1890. this

  1891. was

  1892. traveling

  1893. around

  1894. in

  1895. the

  1896. day

  1897. they

  1898. were

  1899. aware

  1900. of

  1901. this

  1902. event

  1903. that

  1904. had

  1905. happened

  1906. Jesus

  1907. is

  1908. trustworthy

  1909. witness

  1910. to

  1911. who

  1912. he

  1913. is

  1914. and

  1915. he

  1916. should

  1917. be

  1918. trusted

  1919. notice

  1920. lastly

  1921. that

  1922. Jesus

  1923. is

  1924. the

  1925. righteous

  1926. judge

  1927. verses

  1928. 15

  1929. through

  1930. 17

  1931. he

  1932. says

  1933. you

  1934. judge

  1935. according

  1936. to

  1937. the

  1938. flesh

  1939. I

  1940. judge

  1941. no

  1942. one

  1943. yet

  1944. even

  1945. if

  1946. I

  1947. do

  1948. judge

  1949. my

  1950. judgment

  1951. is

  1952. true

  1953. for

  1954. it

  1955. is

  1956. not

  1957. I

  1958. alone

  1959. who

  1960. judge

  1961. but

  1962. I

  1963. and

  1964. the

  1965. father

  1966. who

  1967. sent

  1968. me

  1969. now

  1970. you

  1971. may

  1972. find

  1973. some

  1974. trouble

  1975. with

  1976. this

  1977. on

  1978. first

  1979. glance

  1980. in

  1981. fact

  1982. I

  1983. hope

  1984. you

  1985. do

  1986. I

  1987. hope

  1988. you're

  1989. thinking

  1990. I

  1991. hope

  1992. you're

  1993. engaged

  1994. enough

  1995. to

  1996. go

  1997. wait

  1998. a

  1999. second

  2000. he

  2001. just

  2002. said

  2003. he

  2004. judges

  2005. nowhere

  2006. but

  2007. yet

  2008. even

  2009. if

  2010. he

  2011. does

  2012. judge

  2013. he

  2014. has

  2015. a

  2016. true

  2017. judgment

  2018. here's

  2019. what's

  2020. happening

  2021. he

  2022. says

  2023. to

  2024. them

  2025. you

  2026. judge

  2027. according

  2028. to

  2029. the

  2030. flesh

  2031. you're

  2032. looking

  2033. at

  2034. the

  2035. outward

  2036. appearance

  2037. you're

  2038. not

  2039. spiritually

  2040. discerning

  2041. who

  2042. I

  2043. am

  2044. and

  2045. I

  2046. have

  2047. no

  2048. part

  2049. in

  2050. that

  2051. kind

  2052. of

  2053. judgment

  2054. it's

  2055. what's

  2056. being

  2057. communicated

  2058. in

  2059. verse

  2060. 15

  2061. it's

  2062. that

  2063. sort

  2064. of

  2065. judgment

  2066. the

  2067. judgment

  2068. that is

  2069. according

  2070. to the

  2071. flesh

  2072. that he

  2073. does

  2074. not

  2075. do

  2076. but

  2077. if

  2078. he

  2079. does

  2080. show

  2081. you

  2082. why

  2083. yet

  2084. even

  2085. if

  2086. I

  2087. do

  2088. judge

  2089. my

  2090. judgment

  2091. is

  2092. true

  2093. because

  2094. he

  2095. is

  2096. God

  2097. for

  2098. it

  2099. is

  2100. not

  2101. I

  2102. alone

  2103. who

  2104. judge

  2105. but

  2106. I

  2107. and

  2108. the

  2109. father

  2110. who

  2111. sent

  2112. me

  2113. so

  2114. his

  2115. judgment

  2116. is

  2117. a

  2118. spiritual

  2119. judgment

  2120. spiritually

  2121. discerning

  2122. judgment

  2123. he

  2124. and

  2125. the

  2126. father

  2127. who

  2128. sent

  2129. him

  2130. we

  2131. know

  2132. that

  2133. Jesus

  2134. was

  2135. sent

  2136. to

  2137. judge

  2138. John

    John 5:27

  2139. chapter

  2140. 5

  2141. verse

  2142. 27

  2143. and

  2144. he

  2145. has

  2146. given

  2147. him

  2148. authority

  2149. to

  2150. execute

  2151. judgment

  2152. because

  2153. he

  2154. is

  2155. the

  2156. son

  2157. of

  2158. man

  2159. God

  2160. the

  2161. father

  2162. given

  2163. to

  2164. the

  2165. son

  2166. authority

  2167. to

  2168. execute

  2169. judgment

  2170. and

  2171. then

  2172. John

  2173. 9

  2174. in

  2175. verse

  2176. 39

  2177. Jesus

  2178. says

  2179. for

  2180. judgment

  2181. I

  2182. came

  2183. into

  2184. this

  2185. world

  2186. that

  2187. those

  2188. who

  2189. do

  2190. not

  2191. see

  2192. may

  2193. see

  2194. and

  2195. those

  2196. who

  2197. see

  2198. may

  2199. become

  2200. blind

  2201. on

  2202. the

  2203. basis

  2204. of

  2205. faith

  2206. that

  2207. he

  2208. is

  2209. the

  2210. Christ

  2211. Jesus

  2212. is

  2213. the

  2214. light

  2215. of

  2216. the

  2217. world

  2218. would

  2219. you

  2220. follow

  2221. him

  2222. that

  2223. you

  2224. may

  2225. have

  2226. the

  2227. light

  2228. of

  2229. life

  2230. he

  2231. is

  2232. a

  2233. trustworthy

  2234. witness

  2235. to

  2236. who

  2237. he

  2238. says

  2239. he

  2241. and

  2242. he

  2243. is

  2244. the

  2245. righteous

  2246. judge

  2247. he

  2248. will

  2249. return

  2250. one

  2251. day

  2252. and

  2253. he

  2254. will

  2255. judge

  2256. rightly

  2257. based

  2258. on

  2259. faith

  2260. in

  2261. him

  2262. if

  2263. you

  2264. have

  2265. yet

  2266. to

  2267. spiritually

  2268. discerned

  2269. this

  2274. ask

  2275. for

  2276. God's

  2277. favor

  2278. on

  2279. you

  2280. that

  2281. he

  2282. would

  2283. help

  2284. you

  2285. come

  2286. alive

  2287. and

  2288. see

  2289. the

  2290. Jesus

  2291. of

  2292. the

  2293. scripture

  2294. to

  2295. know

  2296. him

  2297. to

  2298. come

  2299. to

  2300. him

  2301. for

  2302. the

  2303. salvation

  2304. of

  2305. your

  2306. soul

  2307. if

  2308. you

  2309. have

  2310. already

  2311. praise

  2312. God

  2313. this

  2314. was

  2315. not

  2316. our

  2317. own

  2318. doing

  2319. it's

  2320. not

  2321. our

  2322. wills

  2323. that

  2324. got

  2325. us

  2326. there

  2327. but

  2328. we

  2329. were

  2330. born

  2331. of

  2332. him
