  1. All right, good morning, church.

  2. All right, we are super excited to get to worship with you guys one more time before we head back to our country in Southeast Asia.

  3. ! The past couple months has been an extreme delight and joy for our family.

  4. We've gotten to have meals with many of you guys to talk.

  5. And sadly, there's been some that we haven't even had a chance.

  6. And we're like, oh, we wish we could sit down and talk with them.

  7. But in the Lord's due time, we would love to do that.

  8. I'm excited to get to bring the word to you all today from Acts chapter 14.

    Acts 14 chapter mention

  9. So if you have your copy of God's word, please open to Acts chapter 14.

    Acts 14 chapter mention

  10. And we'll begin today in verses 19 through 28.

  11. As you're turning there, I want you to know that my hope for today's sermon is that you will be reminded of the joyful privilege and blessing it is to have the local church.

  12. And I want to remind you that I know you guys already know it.

  13. But we, as Nathan has said over and over again, if you've spent any time around Providence Baptist Church, he will say,

  14. we are people slow to remember and quick to forget.

  15. And why does he say this a lot?

  16. Well, because we are people slow to remember and quick to forget.

  17. So we need a lot of reminders.

  18. And so my prayer for today is that you will clearly see in the scripture that our God is building his church through his church for his glory.

  19. I pray that you will not only see it, but you will be reminded of the joyful privilege and delight that it is that you have been given by God to be a part of a church.

  20. That if you're a member here, that you get to call Providence Baptist Church.

  21. And if you are not from here, I do hope that you have a church that you get to be a faithful member at and call your family.

  22. To be a part of a local church who knows the gospel, loves the gospel, loves one another, and desires to see his glory known in all the earth.

  23. So may we never forget the precious privilege that we have been given.

  24. But before we begin looking at today's passage, I want to lay a little bit of a foundation, a little bit of a context,

  25. since we're jumping into the middle of the book of Acts, into some events that have already been unfolding.

  26. And I don't have enough time to do a lot of detail, so I'm giving you a very big overview of what goes on here.

  27. Really, we're looking at Paul's first missionary journey, and this starts back in Acts 13.1,

  28. where Paul and Barnabas were worshiping the Lord and fasting with the church at Antioch in Syria.

  29. And the Holy Spirit said to the church,

  30. Set apart Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.

  31. Then after fasting and praying, they laid their hands on them and sent them off.

  32. So here is the beginning of Paul's first missionary journey,

  33. and they are set apart and sent out through the local church.

  34. And from there, they set out on this U-shaped journey.

  35. They then go to Cyprus, and then to places in Lycia and Galatia.

  36. And what do they do each time they arrive to these new places?

  37. Well, they preach the gospel and make disciples.

  38. And why do they preach?

  39. Well, because they preach because the power to raise dead hearts to life

  40. is not in them, but is in the word, the gospel proclaimed.

  41. It wasn't in just doing acts of mercy or of kindness, which we should do,

  42. but it was through the preached word.

  43. Acts of mercy might be a vehicle to help carry the gospel to some of these regions,

  44. but without the gospel proclamation, there will be no life.

  45. There will be no true power.

  46. So what was Paul's missionary strategy that we see throughout Acts 13 and 14,

  47. and honestly, the whole book of Acts?

  48. Well, we see that he goes and he preaches the gospel.

  49. And he goes to the next place and he preaches the gospel.

  50. And I would like to say that this isn't just Paul's missionary strategy,

  51. but this should be ours.

  52. We know Mark chapter 16, verse 15 says,

    Mark 16:15

  53. to go out into all the world and preach the good news.

  54. And what is the core of the gospel they were preaching?

  55. And before we get into our text, I want to make this clear, church.

  56. And I know you know this.

  57. You've heard the gospel proclaimed over and over again.

  58. But we are slow to remember and quick to forget.

  59. So I do want to remind you that the gospel is that you have sinned against a holy God

  60. and deserve to be cast into hell for all of eternity.

  61. That there is no amount of good works that you could do to save yourself from the wrath of God.

  62. However, God sent his perfect son, Jesus Christ,

  63. who came and lived a perfect life and died as a substitute on your behalf,

  64. taking your sin upon himself and giving you his righteousness.

  65. And then on the third day, he rises from the dead.

  66. And if you believe in him and repent of your sin, you can have eternal life.

  67. That is the core of the gospel message that we believe.

  68. And this is good news.

  69. But I'm afraid as a church who's very comfortable with this,

  70. that we can be in danger of adding to this gospel.

  71. Instead of it just being Jesus and the gospel plus nothing else,

  72. we're in danger of adding external actions to try and affirm our acceptance or our maturity in God.

  73. Maybe it's Jesus plus a quiet time every morning.

  74. Jesus plus a healthy lifestyle.

  75. Jesus plus dressing a certain way.

  76. Or Jesus plus homeschooling.

  77. Plus good parenting.

  78. Jesus plus a stable job.

  79. A big family.

  80. Jesus plus fostering.

  81. Jesus plus getting married.

  82. Jesus plus being a part of a healthy church.

  83. Jesus plus doing family worship.

  84. Now listen to me carefully.

  85. These are things that are good to do.

  86. But if you think that your maturity or acceptance by God is merely based on doing these things,

  87. then you are in danger of adding to the gospel.

  88. Which adding anything to the gospel actually takes away from the gospel.

  89. And then in your evangelism, as you're sharing with others,

  90. you are in danger of unintentionally saying through your actions,

  91. to be a Christian means believing in Jesus and homeschooling and eating this way and being reformed.

  92. We must be careful that we are clear on what the gospel is and that we aren't adding to it.

  93. So should you read your Bible every day?

  94. I think this is a good practice and a really good habit.

  95. But listen, if you walk through the rest of the entire day feeling guilty

  96. or feeling that you're not pleasing to the Lord

  97. because you didn't get up early and read your Bible

  98. because maybe you had sick kids all last night.

  99. And if you feel like you're not walking pleasing to the Lord because of that,

  100. you might be trying to earn some kind of merit through your quiet times.

  101. You're accepted by God in the gospel.

  102. And should you do these things?

  103. Yes, the gospel compels you to want to know the Lord more,

  104. to want to delight and spend time with him.

  105. But your righteousness, your merit before the Lord is not based on what you do.

  106. It's based on what he has done.

  107. And that is really good for us to keep reminding ourselves.

  108. I love the lyrics of the song that say,

  109. All sufficient merit, shining like the sun,

  110. A fortune I inherit, by no work I have done.

  111. My righteousness I forfeit at my Savior's cross,

  112. Where all sufficient merit did what I could not.

  113. And you know what?

  114. God doesn't just save us and leave us alone.

  115. But he cares for us so much that he places us in a family that we get to call the church.

  116. And it is through that church that he goes and he gathers more people to praise him for his goodness and grace.

  117. A family which will help us to remember the gospel.

  118. For how do we grow in our discipleship?

  119. Well, we preach the gospel to one another.

  120. We preach the gospel to our own hearts.

  121. We listen to good, faithful preaching while we gather with the church.

  122. And this is why I get so concerned when I hear people say,

  123. And I have heard this quite a few times.

  124. I don't go to that church because of the preaching.

  125. I go because of the community.

  126. The programs.

  127. And that leaves me going,

  128. What?

  129. Really?

  130. That's like saying I go to a hospital because I like hanging out with the nurses and doctors.

  131. They're very friendly.

  132. Though they might have a terrible reputation of not helping sick patients get better,

  133. They got really nice nurses.

  134. Now don't get me wrong.

  135. A good hospital will be hospitable.

  136. But I want to be in a place where I am going to hear of the balm for my soul.

  137. I want to be in the place where the word of God is going to be preached.

  138. And where I can grow.

  139. I want to be in a place where sick patients can get better.

  140. So brothers and sisters, we need to be in a community where we will hear the gospel preached regularly and faithfully.

  141. A place where we will find true help.

  142. So I'm laying a little bit of foundation because you see that Paul is going to place and he's preaching the gospel,

  143. Preaching the gospel.

  144. And he goes to the next place and he preaches, makes disciples.

  145. But I also want you to see that's not all he does on this journey.

  146. And this is what we'll get into in Acts chapter 14.

    Acts 14 chapter mention

  147. He also plants churches, appoints elders, strengthen and teaches the believers.

  148. And this is what we will see throughout Acts 14, 19 through 28.

  149. So if you have your copy of God's Word, let's read it.

  150. Acts 14, starting in verse 19, says,

  151. But Jews came from Antioch and Iconium.

  152. And having persuaded the crowds, they stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city, supposing that he was dead.

  153. But when the disciples gathered about him, he rose up and entered the city.

  154. And on the next day, he went on with Barnabas to Derbe.

  155. When they had preached the gospel to that city and had made many disciples,

  156. they returned to Lystra and to Iconium and to Antioch,

  157. strengthening the souls of the disciples, encouraging them to continue in the faith

  158. and saying that through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God.

  159. And when they had appointed elders for them in every church with prayer and fasting,

  160. they committed them to the Lord in whom they had believed.

  161. Then they passed through Pisidia and came to Pamphylia.

  162. And when they had spoken the word in Perga, they went down to Italia.

  163. And from there they sailed to Antioch,

  164. where they had been commended to the grace of God for the work that they had fulfilled.

  165. And when they arrived and gathered the church together,

  166. they declared all that God had done with them

  167. and how he had opened a door of faith to the Gentiles.

  168. And they remained no little time with the disciples.

  169. I've divided our passage today into two parts to make it easier to follow along.

  170. Part one is the suffering from verses 19 through 20.

  171. And part two is the mission, verses 21 through 28.

  172. And the main point of our text today will be that God is building his church through his church for his glory.

  173. So part one, the suffering.

  174. I'm going to reread verse 19, which says,

  175. But Jews came from Antioch and Iconium,

  176. and having persuaded the crowds, they stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city,

  177. supposing that he was dead.

  178. Paul and Barnabas had just come from preaching in Antioch and Iconium,

  179. and after many had heard the gospel and believed,

  180. much conflict began to stir.

  181. Well, actually, the conflict wasn't even just stirring.

  182. It was actually boiling over at this point.

  183. Antioch and Iconium were about 100 miles away from Lystra,

  184. where Paul and Barnabas were.

  185. However, this kind of journey could take a group of people,

  186. anywhere from like two to five full days of traveling,

  187. to get there.

  188. So in relative comparison,

  189. it would be like they jumped in a bus in Atlanta,

  190. and drove all the way to California to put an end to Paul, the preacher.

  191. I hope you see that they were pretty mad.

  192. There was a lot of conflict stirring there.

  193. So when they get there,

  194. they persuade the crowds to stone Paul and drag him out of the city.

  195. And mob stoning like this was brutal.

  196. Getting pounded by large, heavy stones,

  197. bones breaking, blood dripping, skull cracking.

  198. And after they are sure he is dead,

  199. they drag his limp body out of the city.

  200. And this was a deep pain and suffering,

  201. and I'm sure Paul looked as dead as dead could be.

  202. But what happens next?

  203. Verse 20 says,

  204. But when the disciples gathered about him,

  205. he rose up and into the city,

  206. and on the next day he went on with Barnabas to Derbe.

  207. The disciples had actually probably come to bury him,

  208. but in a miraculous way,

  209. Paul gets up and the next day heads on to Derbe.

  210. Paul's condition was probably worse than somebody,

  211. if somebody had driven their car off the side of a mountain and lived.

  212. His condition was probably worse,

  213. but in some miraculous way he gets up

  214. and he walks the distance of potentially 50 miles

  215. to go to the next city.

  216. And what does he do?

  217. Well, he continues to preach.

  218. God gives him the strength to go on,

  219. but his scars still remain.

  220. And what was Paul's perspective over Christian suffering?

  221. There actually are many places we could turn to,

  222. but I want to mention just one that is relevant for our passage for today.

  223. Listen as I read Colossians chapter 1,

    Colossians 1:24–26

  224. verses 24 through 26.

  225. It says,

  226. Now I rejoice in my suffering for your sake,

  227. and in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in Christ's affliction

  228. for the sake of his body that is the church,

  229. of which I became a minister according to the stewardship from God

  230. that was given to me for you

  231. to make the word of God fully known,

  232. the mystery hidden for ages and generations,

  233. but now revealed to his saints.

  234. So Paul sees his sufferings as filling up

  235. what is lacking in Christ's afflictions.

  236. And if you read that,

  237. I bet a lot of you guys are saying,

  238. what does Paul mean here?

  239. How can there be anything lacking in Christ's afflictions?

  240. Maybe you will think of Hebrews 10, 14,

  241. which says,

  242. For by a single offering he has perfected for all time

  243. those who are being sanctified.

  244. Christ's atonement was perfectly sufficient.

  245. So what is lacking?

  246. Well, nothing is lacking in merit,

  247. but it is lacking in extension.

  248. And I love how John Piper explains it.

  249. He says,

  250. Christ's suffering must be carried to the world.

  251. And God has ordained that this happens

  252. through the suffering of his servants.

  253. He also says,

  254. The sufferings of Christ are completed in redemption,

  255. but they are still being completed in mission.

  256. As his ambassadors go out and preach the good news,

  257. there will be suffering.

  258. And in that suffering and sacrifice,

  259. there will be a physical display of Christ's suffering

  260. that proclaims to a dying world,

  261. that proclaims to a church

  262. that is suffering,

  263. that the sufferings of this present time

  264. are not worth comparing to the glory

  265. that is to be revealed to us.

  266. And look at what Paul says in Acts chapter 14,

    Acts 14:22

  267. verses 22 in our text today.

  268. It says,

  269. so we're going to skip down just a little bit,

  270. but it says,

  271. that he was strengthening the souls of the disciples,

  272. encouraging them to continue in the faith,

  273. and saying that through many tribulations,

  274. we must enter the kingdom of God.

  275. And remember,

  276. Paul is saying this to a church

  277. right after he was stoned.

  278. His body,

  279. broken and beaten,

  280. was physically displaying the suffering of Christ,

  281. strengthening the church,

  282. building up the church,

  283. filling up what was lacking in the affliction of Christ

  284. for the sake of the church.

  285. And now some of you may say,

  286. but Caleb,

  287. am I really suffering?

  288. My life is so easy

  289. compared to what we read in the Bible,

  290. what we read about what's happening overseas

  291. in different areas.

  292. And this may be true.

  293. However,

  294. I have to ask you,

  295. are you being faithful

  296. in these so-called smaller sacrifices

  297. and trials for your king?

  298. For if you are not faithful

  299. in these smaller trials and difficulties

  300. that you face in a time of relative ease,

  301. how will you expect to be faithful

  302. in the time of great trial?

  303. And I can't flesh this out for all of you

  304. in your specific context,

  305. but maybe it is

  306. refusing a high-paying job

  307. or promotion

  308. because it would require you to work

  309. when the people of God are gathering.

  310. Or maybe your job requires you

  311. to buffer some numbers,

  312. to be dishonest,

  313. but you remain true.

  314. Maybe it's the daily sacrifice

  315. of waking up

  316. every single Sunday,

  317. getting your kids ready,

  318. and going to church,

  319. training your kids,

  320. when you know,

  321. honestly,

  322. you're probably only going to hear

  323. a few words from the sermon,

  324. but you do it anyways

  325. every single week

  326. because you know

  327. it's good for your soul,

  328. it's good for your kids,

  329. it's good for the church.

  330. Maybe it's opening your mouth

  331. at work

  332. to share the gospel

  333. with a co-worker

  334. or in your neighborhood

  335. with a neighbor

  336. or some friends

  337. who you know

  338. as soon as you open your mouth

  339. to tell them the gospel,

  340. oh,

  341. they're going to label you

  342. as a religious bigot.

  343. But you want them,

  344. you want them to believe,

  345. so you do it anyways.

  346. Maybe it's saying no

  347. to wasting your time

  348. on social media

  349. or watching TV

  350. so that you can be

  351. a more faithful friend,

  352. mom,

  353. dad,

  354. brother,

  355. sister,

  356. neighbor,

  357. church member,

  358. and disciple

  359. to those

  360. who are around you.

  361. I don't know

  362. what your current situation

  363. is like

  364. and what that sacrifice

  365. might be,

  366. but may we all

  367. on these

  368. quote-unquote

  369. smaller trials

  370. be faithful

  371. to our king.

  372. These trials

  373. of various kind

  374. and may they produce

  375. in us

  376. a steadfastness

  377. and may they build up

  378. the church

  379. for his glory.

  380. And after being built up,

  381. we may stand firm

  382. in the days

  383. of great trial.

  384. Praise God

  385. that the suffering

  386. of this present time

  387. are truly not worth

  388. comparing to the glory

  389. that will be revealed to us.

  390. That is part one

  391. of our sermon today.

  392. Part two

  393. is the mission.

  394. And this will be

  395. verses 21 through 28

  396. and I'm going to break

  397. this up into four

  398. brief sub-points

  399. or aims

  400. in order to show

  401. what was

  402. the apostles'

  403. mission

  404. and what was

  405. their strategy

  406. to spread the gospel

  407. to all nations.

  408. And by implication,

  409. what should our strategy

  410. be?

  411. The four aims

  412. of the mission

  413. are reaching

  414. the lost,

  415. teaching the disciples,

  416. planting local churches,

  417. and then we see

  418. Paul returning

  419. to encourage.

  420. And in all of these,

  421. and if you didn't

  422. quite write those down

  423. quite yet,

  424. I will repeat them

  425. as I get there.

  426. But in all of these,

  427. there is an underlying

  428. assumption of preaching

  429. and proclaiming

  430. the word of God.

  431. For how do we reach

  432. the lost?

  433. Well, it's by preaching

  434. the gospel.

  435. How do we teach

  436. the disciples?

  437. Well, it's through

  438. preaching the word,

  439. encouraging each other

  440. in the word.

  441. We plant churches

  442. that stand upon

  443. the word of God

  444. and we return

  445. and encourage others

  446. by telling all

  447. that the gospel

  448. has done.

  449. So the foundation

  450. of those is a

  451. preaching and proclaiming

  452. of the word.

  453. So aim number one,

  454. reaching the lost.

  455. Let's read the first

  456. part of verse 21,

  457. which says,

  458. when they had preached

  459. the gospel to that city

  460. and had made

  461. many disciples.

  462. So what did they do?

  463. They first reached

  464. the lost in that city

  465. through preaching

  466. the gospel

  467. and then making

  468. many disciples,

  469. thus taking part,

  470. the first part

  471. of the Great Commission,

  472. which says,

  473. go therefore

  474. and make disciples

  475. of all nations.

  476. So what was Paul's aim?

  477. To go and preach

  478. and make disciples.

  479. So what should our aim be?

  480. To go and preach

  481. and make disciples.

  482. But Paul doesn't

  483. just end there.

  484. Paul's ambition

  485. was to preach Christ,

  486. not where he had been named,

  487. as he says in Romans 15, 20.

  488. So Paul wanted to go

  489. to the unreached

  490. to preach the gospel there.

  491. But he just,

  492. he doesn't just leave

  493. these disciples alone.

  494. He doesn't just reach them,

  495. but he goes back

  496. and teaches them

  497. as they gather together

  498. as the local church.

  499. And on this U-shaped journey,

  500. Paul was headed back

  501. to the church

  502. that had sent him out.

  503. And if you know a U,

  504. the quickest way back

  505. to the other point of view

  506. is straight across.

  507. And Paul could have

  508. very easily done that.

  509. But instead of doing that,

  510. what he does is

  511. he goes back the long way

  512. and goes back

  513. through the regions

  514. that he had already been.

  515. And why does he do that?

  516. To go back to the regions

  517. where people had just traveled

  518. to stone him.

  519. Why does he do that?

  520. What was for the sake

  521. of the churches there?

  522. For the sake of encouraging

  523. and strengthening the disciples

  524. who had believed.

  525. So aim number two,

  526. teaching the disciples.

  527. Let's read the last part

  528. of verse 21

  529. and then verse 22.

  530. It says,

  531. Then they returned

  532. to Lystra

  533. and to Iconium

  534. and to Antioch,

  535. strengthening the souls

  536. of the disciples,

  537. encouraging them

  538. to continue in the faith,

  539. saying that through

  540. many tribulations

  541. we must enter

  542. the kingdom of God.

  543. So after reaching them,

  544. Paul then goes back

  545. and teaches them.

  546. He strengthens their souls

  547. and encourages them

  548. to continue in the faith,

  549. telling them that

  550. through many tribulations

  551. we must enter

  552. the kingdom of God.

  553. And we don't actually

  554. get a lot of detail

  555. of exactly what Paul said here,

  556. but I can imagine

  557. that it sounded

  558. just like what he told Timothy

  559. in 2 Timothy 3, 10 through 17.

  560. And you will see actually

  561. a lot of overlap

  562. in this passage.

  563. So just listen as I read

  564. 2 Timothy 3, 10 through 17.

  565. It says,

  566. You, however,

  567. have followed my teaching,

  568. my conduct,

  569. my aim in life,

  570. my faith,

  571. my patience,

  572. my love,

  573. my steadfastness,

  574. my persecutions

  575. and sufferings

  576. that happened to me

  577. at Antioch,

  578. at Iconium,

  579. and at Lystra,

  580. which persecutions

  581. I endured.

  582. Yet from them all

  583. the Lord rescued me.

  584. Indeed,

  585. all who desire

  586. to live a godly life

  587. in Christ Jesus

  588. will be persecuted.

  589. While evil people

  590. and imposters

  591. will go on

  592. from bad to worse,

  593. deceiving and being deceived,

  594. but as for you,

  595. continue in what you

  596. have learned

  597. and have firmly believed,

  598. knowing from whom

  599. you have learned it

  600. and how from childhood

  601. you have been acquainted

  602. with the sacred writings

  603. which are able

  604. to make you wise

  605. for salvation

  606. through faith

  607. in Christ Jesus.

  608. All scripture

  609. is breathed out

  610. by God

  611. and profitable

  612. for teaching,

  613. for reproof,

  614. for correction,

  615. for training in righteousness

  616. that the man of God

  617. may be complete,

  618. equipped for every

  619. good work.

  620. So how does Paul

  621. encourage Timothy

  622. in this passage?

  623. He teaches him

  624. and reminds him

  625. of the truth

  626. and encourages him

  627. to continue

  628. in what he has learned

  629. and believed.

  630. He also reminds him

  631. that all scripture

  632. is inspired by God

  633. and useful

  634. for building up

  635. the church,

  636. for equipping

  637. the saints.

  638. Paul in Acts 14

  639. encourages the churches

  640. in a very similar way.

  641. He encourages them

  642. in the truth,

  643. by the truth.

  644. He preaches

  645. and teaches them

  646. so that they may

  647. grow in the Lord.

  648. So how are we saved?

  649. Well, it's through

  650. hearing and believing

  651. the preached word of God.

  652. How do we grow?

  653. Well, we grow

  654. by hearing

  655. and believing

  656. the word of God.

  657. And this is the part

  658. of the Great Commission

  659. that says,

  660. teaching them to obey

  661. all that I have commanded you.

  662. It's not just

  663. go and make disciples,

  664. but it's also

  665. to teach them

  666. all that he has commanded.

  667. And this is not just

  668. the job

  669. of pastors,

  670. of missionaries,

  671. of evangelists.

  672. This is the part,

  673. this is also

  674. your job

  675. as a member

  676. of the body of Christ.

  677. To preach,

  678. to reach the lost

  679. around you,

  680. proclaim the gospel

  681. to them

  682. and teach them

  683. what the Lord

  684. has said.

  685. So may we all

  686. be faithful

  687. to open our mouths

  688. to reach the lost

  689. and teach

  690. the disciples.

  691. Aim number three

  692. is planting

  693. churches.

  694. Verse 23 says,

  695. and when they had

  696. appointed elders

  697. for them in every church

  698. with prayer and fasting,

  699. they committed them

  700. to the Lord

  701. in whom they had

  702. believed.

  703. So along with

  704. going back

  705. to teach

  706. the many disciples,

  707. Paul and Barnabas

  708. returned to help

  709. appoint elders

  710. in every church.

  711. Now it doesn't tell us

  712. when these churches

  713. were formed,

  714. but somewhere

  715. from reaching them

  716. to teaching them,

  717. local communities

  718. of believers

  719. were gathering

  720. together regularly

  721. and they are

  722. referred to

  723. as churches

  724. here in our text.

  725. Honestly,

  726. I wouldn't be

  727. surprised if these

  728. disciples naturally

  729. started gathering

  730. together because

  731. they knew that

  732. they needed

  733. one another.

  734. They had been

  735. called from the

  736. community of darkness

  737. into the community

  738. of light,

  739. so why would you

  740. not gather

  741. with the people

  742. of God

  743. to be encouraged

  744. on your heavenly

  745. journey?

  746. It would seem

  747. foolish not to,

  748. but it's a point

  749. that I have to

  750. emphasize

  751. because sadly,

  752. even today,

  753. one of the most

  754. popular missions

  755. methodologies out

  756. there says

  757. that the church

  758. is a hindrance

  759. to the Great

  760. Commission.

  761. That if we would

  762. just skip over

  763. planting churches,

  764. we would be able

  765. to reach the nations

  766. with the gospels

  767. like we would have

  768. done it already.

  769. Churches are messy.

  770. Why would you

  771. slow down

  772. and plant a church

  773. when you can just

  774. focus on making

  775. disciples?

  776. I hope that you

  777. see the folly

  778. in this.

  779. This is not how

  780. the apostles

  781. understood the

  782. Great Commission.

  783. This is not how

  784. we should understand

  785. the Great Commission.

  786. I mean,

  787. imagine if your

  788. building contractor

  789. for your home

  790. had this methodology.

  791. After spending

  792. about $500,000

  793. and giving the

  794. contractor

  795. the house plans,

  796. you get a call

  797. back after three

  798. weeks and he

  799. says,

  800. we're done.

  801. You go,

  802. you're super

  803. excited,

  804. you can't wait to

  805. see your new

  806. home,

  807. and then when you

  808. get there,

  809. you're just shocked.

  810. Not because of how

  811. good it is,

  812. but because of how

  813. bad it is.

  814. You walk in,

  815. the foundation is

  816. poor,

  817. uneven,

  818. the walls are

  819. caving in,

  820. the roof is

  821. incomplete,

  822. the electricity

  823. wasn't stalled

  824. right,

  825. and the plumbing

  826. is a disaster.

  827. You would be

  828. disgusted.

  829. And if we are not

  830. careful,

  831. we can do the same

  832. thing with our

  833. approach to missions.

  834. God has given us

  835. the plan,

  836. and in the plan

  837. we see that he

  838. builds his church

  839. through his church.

  840. And if we skip

  841. over that,

  842. we will be

  843. accountable to the

  844. owner of the

  845. building,

  846. the owner of the

  847. church who has

  848. given us his

  849. building plans in

  850. his word.

  851. So we have seen

  852. that Paul himself

  853. is sent out from

  854. the church at

  855. Antioch,

  856. and then he

  857. returns back to

  858. report to the

  859. church at

  860. Antioch.

  861. And honestly,

  862. guys,

  863. if anybody could

  864. have sent

  865. themselves without

  866. being sent out

  867. from a church,

  868. it could have

  869. been Paul.

  870. But that's not

  871. how God designed

  872. it.

  873. He designed

  874. that he would

  875. be sent out

  876. through a

  877. church.

  878. And he

  879. comes back

  880. and he

  881. reports to

  882. that church.

  883. So Paul also

  884. returns and he

  885. strengthens the

  886. disciples in all

  887. those churches

  888. throughout the

  889. regions where

  890. they had preached

  891. and made many

  892. disciples.

  893. But why does

  894. he do this?

  895. because Paul

  896. knew that the

  897. local church

  898. is the

  899. vehicle which

  900. the gospel

  901. would not

  902. only reach

  903. the nations,

  904. but also

  905. keep the

  906. nations.

  907. And what is

  908. one of God's

  909. appointed means

  910. for growing and

  911. keeping the

  912. church?

  913. You know

  914. what it is?

  915. It's elders.

  916. pastors.

  917. That is

  918. pastors or

  919. shepherds.

  920. Look at verse

  921. 23 again.

  922. It says,

  923. And when they

  924. had appointed

  925. elders for

  926. them in every

  927. church with

  928. prayer and

  929. fasting, they

  930. committed them

  931. to the Lord

  932. in whom they

  933. had believed.

  934. This verse

  935. tells us that

  936. they appointed

  937. elders, but

  938. why elders?

  939. Listen as I

  940. read Ephesians

    Ephesians 4:11–12

  941. 4 verses

  942. 11 through

  943. 12.

  944. It says,

  945. And he gave

  946. the apostles,

  947. the prophets,

  948. the evangelists,

  949. the shepherds,

  950. and teachers to

  951. equip the

  952. saints for

  953. the work of

  954. ministry, for

  955. building up

  956. the body of

  957. Christ.

  958. So why did

  959. he give

  960. elders?

  961. Well, he

  962. gave them to

  963. make the

  964. church strong,

  965. to equip the

  966. saints.

  967. And notice

  968. that it uses

  969. the word he

  970. gave.

  971. Brothers, if

  972. you are a

  973. part of a

  974. healthy church,

  975. the Lord has

  976. given you a

  977. gift.

  978. It says he

  979. gave.

  980. Elders are a

  981. gift to the

  982. church.

  983. They are there

  984. to help little

  985. seeds, little

  986. saplings grow

  987. into oaks.

  988. And how do

  989. they do this?

  990. We don't have

  991. time to go to

  992. all the places,

  993. but God's word

  994. tells us that

  995. elders equip,

  996. they shepherd,

  997. they care,

  998. they keep

  999. watch, they

  1000. teach sound

  1001. doctrine, they

  1002. rebuke false

  1003. doctrine, they

  1004. pray for the

  1005. church, set an

  1006. example for

  1007. the church, and

  1008. more.

  1009. This is why

  1010. Paul tells

  1011. Titus in

  1012. Titus chapter

    Titus 1:5

  1013. 1 verse 5

  1014. that he left

  1015. them there in

  1016. Crete to put

  1017. what remained in

  1018. order and what

  1019. was not in

  1020. order.

  1021. What was lacking

  1022. in the planning of

  1023. those churches?

  1024. Well, they

  1025. didn't have

  1026. elders.

  1027. So he leaves

  1028. them there to

  1029. help appoint

  1030. elders.

  1031. Church, I hope

  1032. you realize the

  1033. blessing it is to

  1034. have elders who

  1035. stand upon the

  1036. word of God.

  1037. Elders who

  1038. love God's

  1039. word, preach

  1040. God's word,

  1041. shepherd with

  1042. God's word, and

  1043. elders who love

  1044. and care for

  1045. you.

  1046. You may not

  1047. agree with all

  1048. of their

  1049. decisions.

  1050. You may not

  1051. vibe with their

  1052. personality.

  1053. You may not

  1054. even get along

  1055. very well with

  1056. them.

  1057. However, God

  1058. gave them.

  1059. They are a

  1060. gift.

  1061. So may we

  1062. praise and

  1063. thank God for

  1064. the good

  1065. gifts that he

  1066. has given and

  1067. realize that

  1068. shepherds are

  1069. also sheep.

  1070. They also need

  1071. you members to

  1072. strengthen and

  1073. encourage them on

  1074. their journey to

  1075. the heavenly

  1076. kingdom.

  1077. May we reflect on

  1078. Hebrews 13,

    Hebrews 13:17

  1079. verse 17,

  1080. which says,

  1081. Obey your

  1082. leaders and

  1083. submit to them,

  1084. for they are

  1085. keeping watch

  1086. over your

  1087. souls as

  1088. those who

  1089. will have to

  1090. give an

  1091. account.

  1092. Let them do

  1093. this with joy

  1094. and not with

  1095. groaning, for

  1096. that would be

  1097. of no advantage

  1098. to you.

  1099. God for that.

  1100. Please don't

  1101. talk and act

  1102. in such a way

  1103. that causes

  1104. them to groan.

  1105. Be a sheep

  1106. that is a joy

  1107. to shepherd.

  1108. And finally,

  1109. aim number

  1110. four, we

  1111. see they're

  1112. returning to

  1113. encourage.

  1114. And I'm

  1115. very briefly

  1116. going over this

  1117. section.

  1118. But verse 24

  1119. begins,

  1120. Then they

  1121. passed through

  1122. Pisidia and

  1123. came to

  1124. Pamphylia.

  1125. And when they

  1126. had spoken the

  1127. word in

  1128. Perga, they

  1129. went down to

  1130. Italia.

  1131. And from

  1132. there they

  1133. sailed to

  1134. Antioch, where

  1135. they had been

  1136. commended to

  1137. the grace of

  1138. God for the

  1139. work that they

  1140. had fulfilled.

  1141. And when they

  1142. arrived and

  1143. gathered the

  1144. church together,

  1145. they declared

  1146. all that God

  1147. had done with

  1148. them, and how

  1149. he had opened

  1150. a door of

  1151. faith to the

  1152. Gentiles.

  1153. And they

  1154. remained no

  1155. little time with

  1156. the disciples.

  1157. I think the

  1158. best way I can

  1159. summarize these

  1160. verses is to

  1161. say that Paul

  1162. and Barnabas

  1163. went back

  1164. through all the

  1165. places they

  1166. had been and

  1167. came to the

  1168. church in

  1169. Antioch to

  1170. report to that

  1171. church who

  1172. had sent

  1173. them out.

  1174. And why do

  1175. they report to

  1176. this church?

  1177. Because this

  1178. mission wasn't

  1179. just Paul's

  1180. mission.

  1181. This wasn't

  1182. his own

  1183. personal mission,

  1184. but this was

  1185. God's mission

  1186. through the

  1187. church.

  1188. The church

  1189. sent them out

  1190. to go and

  1191. preach the

  1192. good news to

  1193. these regions,

  1194. and they

  1195. come back and

  1196. report all that

  1197. the Lord had

  1198. done.

  1199. And in that,

  1200. the church

  1201. would be greatly

  1202. encouraged.

  1203. And then he

  1204. spends no

  1205. little time

  1206. with the

  1207. disciples.

  1208. disciples.

  1209. So we

  1210. have seen

  1211. in today's

  1212. text that

  1213. God will

  1214. build his

  1215. church through

  1216. his church for

  1217. his glory.

  1218. And now I

  1219. want to end

  1220. by answering

  1221. the question,

  1222. so what?

  1223. What does

  1224. this truth

  1225. mean for my

  1226. life?

  1227. Well, for

  1228. all believers,

  1229. it means what

  1230. Hebrews 10

    Hebrews 10:24–25

  1231. verses 24

  1232. through 25

  1233. says.

  1234. It says,

  1235. and let us

  1236. consider how

  1237. to stir up

  1238. one another

  1239. to love

  1240. and good

  1241. works,

  1242. not neglecting

  1243. to meet

  1244. together as

  1245. is the habit

  1246. of some,

  1247. but encouraging

  1248. one another

  1249. and all the

  1250. more as you

  1251. see the day

  1252. drawing near.

  1253. Christians,

  1254. do you want

  1255. to live not

  1256. a perfect

  1257. life,

  1258. but a faithful

  1259. one unto

  1260. the Lord?

  1261. Don't neglect

  1262. to gather

  1263. with the saints.

  1264. Be a member

  1265. of a local

  1266. gospel preaching

  1267. church and

  1268. commit yourself

  1269. to that church

  1270. through thick

  1271. and thin.

  1272. And I've

  1273. seen the trend

  1274. too often.

  1275. People stop

  1276. spending time

  1277. in the word

  1278. of God.

  1279. Then they stop

  1280. spending time

  1281. with the people

  1282. of God.

  1283. And they stop

  1284. believing that

  1285. there is a God.

  1286. Don't

  1287. neglect

  1288. the word

  1289. of God

  1290. and to gather

  1291. with the

  1292. church.

  1293. For the

  1294. church is

  1295. God's

  1296. instrument

  1297. to make

  1298. his name

  1299. known

  1300. in all

  1301. the earth.

  1302. And if

  1303. you're a

  1304. teen,

  1305. a young

  1306. adult,

  1307. or a

  1308. kid here,

  1309. many of

  1310. you go to

  1311. church right

  1312. now because

  1313. your mommy

  1314. and daddy

  1315. make you.

  1316. And guess

  1317. what?

  1318. That's a good

  1319. thing.

  1320. However,

  1321. there will

  1322. come a day

  1323. where the

  1324. choice will

  1325. be yours.

  1326. And on

  1327. that day,

  1328. what will

  1329. you choose?

  1330. My prayer

  1331. is that you

  1332. will choose

  1333. to go to

  1334. a good,

  1335. healthy church

  1336. whenever you

  1337. can.

  1338. Yes,

  1339. this means

  1340. that as you

  1341. get older

  1342. and you're

  1343. in college,

  1344. maybe you

  1345. will miss

  1346. out on a

  1347. lot of

  1348. events or

  1349. games or

  1350. you'll have

  1351. less time

  1352. for your

  1353. exams,

  1354. you'll be

  1355. more tired.

  1356. But I

  1357. promise you

  1358. it is

  1359. worth it.

  1360. Becoming a

  1361. member of a

  1362. local church

  1363. was the

  1364. best thing

  1365. I ever

  1366. did in

  1367. college.

  1368. If I

  1369. could go

  1370. back,

  1371. I would

  1372. do it

  1373. again.

  1374. I would

  1375. just probably

  1376. care a

  1377. little less

  1378. about my

  1379. grades so

  1380. I could

  1381. have more

  1382. time with

  1383. the church.

  1384. Let being

  1385. a member

  1386. of a gospel

  1387. preaching

  1388. church drive

  1389. the future

  1390. decisions that

  1391. you make.

  1392. If you get

  1393. accepted to

  1394. an excellent

  1395. university,

  1396. but there are

  1397. no gospel

  1398. centered local

  1399. churches there,

  1400. I beg you

  1401. don't go.

  1402. Go to the

  1403. lesser known

  1404. university where

  1405. you know there

  1406. is a great

  1407. gospel preaching

  1408. church that

  1409. will care for

  1410. your soul.

  1411. Remember the

  1412. words of Mark

    Mark 8:36

  1413. chapter 8

  1414. verses 36

  1415. which says,

  1416. for what does

  1417. it profit a

  1418. man to gain

  1419. the whole world

  1420. and forfeit

  1421. his soul?

  1422. And everyone,

  1423. I want you to

  1424. remember that

  1425. when a wolf

  1426. attacks a

  1427. sheep,

  1428. what does it

  1429. try to do?

  1430. Well, it

  1431. tries to

  1432. isolate the

  1433. sheep.

  1434. It tries to

  1435. get them

  1436. away from

  1437. the flock

  1438. for when the

  1439. sheep are

  1440. together by

  1441. the shepherd,

  1442. there is

  1443. much safety.

  1444. There's a

  1445. level of

  1446. protection in

  1447. their togetherness.

  1448. If you try

  1449. to walk

  1450. through life

  1451. without being

  1452. connected to

  1453. a local

  1454. church,

  1455. I want you

  1456. to know that

  1457. the wolves

  1458. are waiting.

  1459. They would

  1460. love nothing

  1461. more than to

  1462. see you

  1463. separated from

  1464. the flock.

  1465. And a

  1466. warning,

  1467. if you are

  1468. already a

  1469. part of

  1470. a local

  1471. church

  1472. or

  1473. considering

  1474. joining,

  1475. you know

  1476. what?

  1477. The wolves

  1478. would be

  1479. fine if

  1480. you join,

  1481. but never

  1482. truly open

  1483. yourself up

  1484. to that

  1485. church.

  1486. Never

  1487. truly let

  1488. anyone else

  1489. know your

  1490. sin, your

  1491. weaknesses,

  1492. your failings,

  1493. even your

  1494. strengths.

  1495. Then be

  1496. fine, just

  1497. don't open

  1498. up.

  1499. It's a

  1500. different form

  1501. of isolation.

  1502. If you do

  1503. that, you

  1504. are still in

  1505. danger.

  1506. Get to

  1507. know others

  1508. and be

  1509. known.

  1510. No one's

  1511. perfect, so

  1512. stop pretending.

  1513. So in

  1514. summary, as

  1515. we've seen

  1516. through the

  1517. text today,

  1518. God is

  1519. building his

  1520. church through

  1521. his church for

  1522. his glory.

  1523. And may we

  1524. all be used

  1525. by our

  1526. great God

  1527. to spread

  1528. his glory,

  1529. not only here

  1530. in this city,

  1531. not only in

  1532. our state,

  1533. not only in

  1534. this country,

  1535. but to the

  1536. ends of the

  1537. earth for

  1538. the sake of

  1539. his glory as

  1540. he redeems

  1541. and cherishes

  1542. his bride.

  1543. And may we

  1544. never forget

  1545. the privilege

  1546. and blessing

  1547. it is to

  1548. be a part

  1549. of his

  1550. church.

  1551. Let's pray.
