  1. Well, good evening, Providence Baptist Church.

  2. Our text this evening is going to be 2 Corinthians chapter 5, verses 17 through 21.

    2 Corinthians 5:17–21

  3. !

  4. 2 Corinthians chapter 5, verses 17 through 21.

    2 Corinthians 5:17–21

  5. Why do we call it good?

  6. I know many of you could probably answer that quite thoroughly.

  7. But at least acknowledge at face value this is kind of a strange name for such a day.

  8. It is a day where we remember the death, the excruciating death, as a matter of fact, of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  9. He was led captive.

  10. He was mocked.

  11. He was stripped naked, shamed, beaten, nailed to a cross, through his feet and his hands, spat upon.

  12. And all of this occurred in an illegal trial with unjust officials whom he created.

  13. Jew and Gentile alike rejected their creator and nailed him to his creation, the tree.

  14. And so there is a really real question here about what on earth is good about that.

  15. And relatedly, why would Christ come to die anyways?

  16. Well, to answer these questions, we will look at 2 Corinthians chapter 5, verse 17 through 21.

    2 Corinthians 5:17–21

  17. Paul writes,

  18. Therefore,

  19. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us.

  20. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.

  21. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

  22. This evening we are going to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the same reason.

  23. This evening we are going to see at least three reasons why Christ came to die.

  24. These same reasons will also help us why it is that we call this day good, and rightly so, because it is truly good.

  25. There are more than these three reasons, to be sure, that are just as important.

  26. But our text today draws us to these three, and so we will follow.

  27. And a quick but important note, I'm not going to go word by word through this passage as would be my normal practice,

  28. nor am I necessarily tracing the argument Paul is making through 2 Corinthians.

  29. Rather, as a day of remembrance, this good Friday, I want our minds to be drawn to the goodness of Christ's death,

  30. with the goal of honoring God and edifying the body.

  31. Three reasons Christ came to die on this good day.

  32. Number one, to create the world anew.

  33. To create the world anew.

  34. Look back at verse 17.

  35. Paul writes,

  36. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.

  37. The old has passed away.

  38. Behold, look, the new has come.

  39. Since Genesis 3, due to Adam's sin, the world is cursed by God.

  40. Thorns, thistles, tough ground, unproductive ground, weeds,

  41. all these kinds of things pop up after the fall.

  42. If you've ever cut your hand out on a farm or working in your yard,

  43. you can thank Adam.

  44. And likewise, God punishes humanity directly.

  45. To Eve, he says,

  46. You will bring forth children in pain,

  47. and your desire shall be for your husband,

  48. and he shall rule over you.

  49. To Adam, he says,

  50. You will work in pain.

  51. You will sweat.

  52. And you will die.

  53. And of course, because Adam and Eve sinned,

  54. all of their offspring are born as sinners as well.

  55. And this is why King David,

  56. many years later, many generations later,

  57. could say truly and rightly in Psalm 51 5,

  58. Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity,

  59. and in sin did my mother conceive me.

  60. He's not saying mom was a bad person who got around.

  61. He's saying,

  62. I was conceived as a sinner.

  63. This reality that David understands is made more explicit

  64. and more universal throughout the Bible.

  65. Just one example is Romans 3, 23.

  66. Paul writes,

  67. For all have sinned,

  68. that's everyone,

  69. every individual,

  70. all have sinned

  71. and fall short of the glory of God.

  72. And so we get these chilling words from Paul in Romans 5, 12.

  73. He says,

  74. Therefore,

  75. just as sin came into the world through one man,

  76. talking about Adam,

  77. just as sin came into the world through Adam,

  78. and death through sin,

  79. and so death spread to all men,

  80. because all sinned.

  81. sinned.

  82. And so you don't even need a Bible necessarily to know this.

  83. The world around us is broken,

  84. and we ourselves are broken.

  85. Nothing is as it should be.

  86. But God,

  87. but God, as Paul says,

  88. being rich in mercy,

  89. because of the great love

  90. with which he loved us,

  91. even when we were dead in our trespasses,

  92. made us alive together with Christ.

  93. By grace,

  94. you have been saved.

  95. Ephesians 2, 4.

  96. This is why Paul can say

  97. in 2 Corinthians 5, 17,

  98. if anyone is in Christ,

  99. he is a new creation.

  100. To be in Christ,

  101. or to be with Christ,

  102. is to be made new.

  103. It is to come alive.

  104. This happens when one has

  105. repented of their sins

  106. and confesses Jesus as Lord.

  107. That confession is made public by baptism,

  108. and biblically,

  109. when a person decides

  110. they are team Jesus,

  111. they publicly pronounce that

  112. through baptism.

  113. And likewise,

  114. the church in turn

  115. baptizes them

  116. as a public recognition

  117. that this person belongs.

  118. This is one of us.

  119. This person

  120. is a Christian,

  121. a new creature.

  122. And hence,

  123. Romans 6, 4,

  124. Paul says,

  125. So if anyone is in Christ,

  126. he is a new creation.

  127. If any person is to be saved

  128. and made alive,

  129. Christ had to die.

  130. The only way dead men live

  131. is if death itself

  132. is overtaken.

  133. If the cursed world

  134. and the broken man

  135. are made new,

  136. this can only be because

  137. they have died

  138. and been reborn,

  139. remade.

  140. And so you can see

  141. why this is so good.

  142. Christ is reversing

  143. the curse of Genesis 3.

  144. He is removing the guilt

  145. and the punishment

  146. of Genesis 3.

  147. And we Christians

  148. here and now,

  149. as James says in James 1.18,

  150. are a kind of first fruits

  151. of his creatures.

  152. That is to say that

  153. in God creating

  154. the new heavens

  155. and the new earth,

  156. he actually starts

  157. right here,

  158. right now,

  159. by creating anew

  160. his people.

  161. And so,

  162. brothers and sisters,

  163. you and I

  164. are the beginning

  165. of the new heavens

  166. and the new earth

  167. by the grace of God

  168. right now.

  169. The second reason

  170. we see that Christ

  171. came to die

  172. is that Christ died

  173. to reconcile us

  174. to God the Father,

  175. to reconcile the world

  176. to the Father.

  177. So look back

  178. at verse 18.

  179. We'll read again.

  180. Paul writes,

  181. all this is from God,

  182. who through Christ

  183. reconciled us

  184. to himself

  185. and gave us

  186. the ministry

  187. of reconciliation.

  188. That is,

  189. in Christ,

  190. God was reconciling

  191. the world

  192. to himself,

  193. not counting their

  194. trespasses against them,

  195. and entrusting to us

  196. the message

  197. of reconciliation.

  198. Therefore,

  199. we are ambassadors

  200. for Christ,

  201. God making his appeal

  202. through us.

  203. We implore you

  204. on behalf of Christ,

  205. be reconciled

  206. to God.

  207. Now,

  208. we could rightly

  209. talk a lot

  210. about the mission

  211. of the church

  212. from this passage.

  213. We could talk about

  214. our responsibility

  215. as ambassadors,

  216. the need to be peacemakers,

  217. to preach the gospel

  218. of reconciliation.

  219. reconciliation.

  220. But again,

  221. today,

  222. we want to focus

  223. on why Christ died

  224. and the goodness

  225. of that horrific

  226. event,

  227. the actual content

  228. of the gospel.

  229. And so,

  230. in doing that,

  231. we see a glaring

  232. key word

  233. in these few verses.

  234. It is

  235. reconciliation.

  236. It appears

  237. five times

  238. in this passage,

  239. twice as a noun,

  240. three times as a verb.

  241. And this term

  242. indicates a change

  243. of relationship.

  244. In sin,

  245. we were enemies

  246. of God.

  247. It is not

  248. an exaggeration

  249. to say

  250. we hated

  251. God.

  252. Capital H.

  253. So,

  254. how would a creature

  255. who hates God

  256. be reconciled

  257. to God?

  258. Why would he?

  259. He hates him.

  260. But this is

  261. one of the things

  262. that makes

  263. Christianity

  264. unique from

  265. all other

  266. religions.

  267. Man does not

  268. reconcile himself

  269. to God.

  270. He cannot.

  271. But as Paul

  272. has made plain,

  273. God reconciles

  274. us

  275. to himself.

  276. Read verse 18

  277. again.

  278. God,

  279. who through Christ

  280. reconciled

  281. us

  282. to

  283. himself.

  284. God

  285. did that.

  286. You and I

  287. did not

  288. do that.

  289. God

  290. and God

  291. alone

  292. did that

  293. through

  294. Christ.

  295. It is only

  296. after God

  297. reconciles us

  298. through Christ

  299. that Paul

  300. commands us

  301. to be

  302. reconciled to

  303. God

  304. in verse 20.

  305. So,

  306. Christ's death

  307. is not

  308. merely enabling

  309. our heart

  310. change.

  311. It is not

  312. merely making

  313. us alive.

  314. As good and

  315. great as that

  316. is,

  317. the gospel

  318. is even

  319. more.

  320. God

  321. is reestablishing

  322. his

  323. relationship

  324. with us.

  325. Through

  326. Christ,

  327. the

  328. reconciliation

  329. that God

  330. brings

  331. changes our

  332. relationship

  333. such that

  334. we're no longer

  335. enemies.

  336. We're friends

  337. of God,

  338. as James 2

  339. says.

  340. We're

  341. adopted

  342. sons

  343. and daughters,

  344. as Ephesians 1

  345. says.

  346. We get to

  347. call him

  348. father.

  349. We who

  350. are enemies

  351. call him

  352. father.

  353. We're now

  354. described as

  355. the bride

  356. of Christ

  357. in Revelation

  358. 19.

  359. So,

  360. talk about

  361. a turn

  362. of events

  363. from enemies

  364. to bride.

  365. And what

  366. is it that

  367. God does

  368. through Christ

  369. to bring

  370. this about?

  371. Well,

  372. in the words

  373. of the prophet

  374. Isaiah 53,

    Isaiah 53:10

  375. verse 10,

  376. God crushed

  377. Jesus.

  378. He has

  379. put him

  380. to grief.

  381. And so,

  382. it is through

  383. Christ's death

  384. on this

  385. Good Friday,

  386. so many

  387. years ago,

  388. that God

  389. reconciled us

  390. to himself.

  391. Paul makes

  392. this connection

  393. explicit in

  394. Romans 5,

    Romans 5:10

  395. verse 10.

  396. He says,

  397. for while we

  398. were enemies,

  399. we were

  400. reconciled to

  401. God by the

  402. death of

  403. his son.

  404. Much more,

  405. now that we

  406. are reconciled,

  407. shall we be

  408. saved by

  409. his life.

  410. The cross

  411. is horrific.

  412. Christ's death

  413. is horrific.

  414. That God

  415. the son died

  416. and died

  417. in the manner

  418. he did,

  419. at the same

  420. time,

  421. it is so

  422. good.

  423. It is so

  424. good,

  425. because in

  426. saving us

  427. through the

  428. death of

  429. the son,

  430. we will

  431. walk with

  432. God in

  433. the streets

  434. of the

  435. new

  436. Jerusalem.

  437. In the

  438. many gardens

  439. of the

  440. new earth,

  441. we will

  442. know God,

  443. we will

  444. feel his

  445. breath on

  446. our face,

  447. as Adam

  448. and Eve

  449. once did

  450. before the

  451. fall.

  452. If you're

  453. cold toward

  454. the Lord

  455. right now,

  456. relish in

  457. that.

  458. That is

  459. amazing.

  460. That is

  461. astounding.

  462. And third

  463. and finally,

  464. Christ died

  465. to make us

  466. the righteousness

  467. of God.

  468. He died

  469. to make us

  470. the righteousness

  471. of God.

  472. Verse 21.

  473. Paul says,

  474. for our

  475. sake,

  476. he made

  477. him to be

  478. sin who

  479. knew no

  480. sin,

  481. so that

  482. in him

  483. we might

  484. become

  485. the

  486. righteousness

  487. of God.

  488. God makes

  489. the world

  490. anew,

  491. he reconciles

  492. us to

  493. himself,

  494. and he

  495. makes us

  496. the righteousness

  497. of God

  498. for his

  499. glory.

  500. That's why

  501. he died.

  502. But one

  503. question I've

  504. kind of

  505. skipped around

  506. is this,

  507. why does

  508. Christ's death

  509. accomplish

  510. this?

  511. We don't

  512. normally think

  513. of death

  514. as a

  515. productive,

  516. fruitful,

  517. life-giving

  518. thing.

  519. I mean,

  520. it's

  521. death.

  522. So why

  523. is Christ's

  524. death so

  525. effective at

  526. bringing about

  527. these massive

  528. changes?

  529. Well,

  530. verse 21,

  531. the Father

  532. made the

  533. Son to

  534. be

  535. sin.

  536. That is to

  537. say,

  538. the sin

  539. that God

  540. must punish,

  541. that we

  542. are guilty

  543. of,

  544. Christ bore

  545. that on

  546. our behalf.

  547. Paul says,

  548. for our

  549. sake.

  550. And this

  551. is what

  552. theologians

  553. have called

  554. the doctrine

  555. of penal

  556. substitutionary

  557. atonement,

  558. absolutely

  559. fundamental

  560. to the

  561. faith.

  562. Without

  563. this

  564. doctrine,

  565. there is

  566. no

  567. gospel.

  568. Penal,

  569. meaning

  570. penalty,

  571. substitutionary,

  572. meaning

  573. substitute,

  574. atonement,

  575. meaning

  576. satisfying

  577. the wrath

  578. of God's

  579. justice

  580. towards

  581. sinners.

  582. sinners.

  583. And so,

  584. in short,

  585. penal

  586. substitutionary

  587. atonement

  588. is just a

  589. fancy way

  590. to say

  591. that Christ

  592. died in

  593. your place

  594. for your

  595. sin to

  596. uphold the

  597. justice

  598. and mercy

  599. of God.

  600. And Christ

  601. is the

  602. only one

  603. who could

  604. satisfy the

  605. wrath of

  606. God as

  607. the spotless

  608. Lamb of

  609. God.

  610. The entire

  611. Old Testament

  612. sacrificial

  613. system

  614. prefigures

  615. Christ in

  616. this way.

  617. This is why

  618. when you read

  619. Leviticus,

  620. you see over

  621. and over

  622. again the

  623. importance

  624. that a

  625. lamb or

  626. a calf or

  627. whatever the

  628. animal is

  629. being sacrificed

  630. must be

  631. spotless,

  632. without

  633. blemish,

  634. perfect.

  635. This is why

  636. 1 Peter 1

  637. 19 speaks

  638. of,

  639. quote,

  640. the precious

  641. blood of

  642. Christ,

  643. like that

  644. of a

  645. lamb without

  646. blemish

  647. or spot.

  648. He's referencing

  649. the Levitical

  650. law.

  651. All of

  652. this is why

  653. Christ's

  654. death is

  655. efficacious

  656. in pardoning

  657. our guilt

  658. because his

  659. death actually

  660. deals with

  661. our sin once

  662. and for all.

  663. It is

  664. finished.

  665. And so you

  666. can see in

  667. verse 20,

  668. for us,

  669. the sinner,

  670. by becoming

  671. sin,

  672. though he knew

  673. no sin,

  674. in other words,

  675. he is righteous

  676. so that we

  677. might become

  678. the righteousness

  679. of God.

  680. He is both

  681. the sin

  682. offering and

  683. the bearer

  684. of the punishment

  685. for sin.

  686. Meanwhile,

  687. we,

  688. the actual

  689. sinners,

  690. the ones

  691. responsible for

  692. this mess,

  693. are made

  694. the righteousness

  695. of God.

  696. In the eyes

  697. of God,

  698. by the grace

  699. of God,

  700. we are seen

  701. as spotless

  702. lambs,

  703. as righteous.

  704. Paul says

  705. it this way

  706. in Colossians

  707. 1,

  708. 21.

  709. He says,

  710. And you,

  711. who were once

  712. alienated and

  713. hostile in mind,

  714. doing evil

  715. deeds,

  716. he is now

  717. reconciled in

  718. his body of

  719. flesh by his

  720. death in

  721. order to

  722. present you

  723. holy and

  724. blameless and

  725. above reproach

  726. before him,

  727. that is,

  728. as righteous.

  729. the record

  730. of wrongs

  731. that we have

  732. committed

  733. are wiped

  734. out.

  735. We no longer

  736. carry the

  737. guilt of

  738. Adam,

  739. but the

  740. crown of

  741. being in

  742. Christ by

  743. grace.

  744. What love

  745. is that?

  746. Who is

  747. like that?

  748. And so,

  749. friends,

  750. I've said it

  751. before,

  752. and I'll

  753. say it

  754. again.

  755. Behold

  756. your God.

  757. in closing,

  758. we actually

  759. just sang this

  760. hymn a moment

  761. ago.

  762. I didn't know

  763. we'd be doing

  764. that.

  765. Very glad we

  766. did.

  767. But I just

  768. want to read

  769. these words

  770. from the hymn,

  771. his robes

  772. for mine.

  773. And my

  774. prayer is that

  775. you'll set

  776. your mind on

  777. the truths of

  778. these words,

  779. that these will

  780. always be on

  781. your soul and

  782. mind and heart

  783. every day of

  784. the year.

  785. But especially

  786. as we anticipate

  787. this Sunday,

  788. Easter Sunday,

  789. I think it

  790. is appropriate

  791. to,

  792. perhaps more

  793. than normal,

  794. draw our

  795. minds to

  796. these specific

  797. truths.

  798. And so,

  799. I'm going to

  800. read the first

  801. verse and

  802. last verse

  803. of his robes

  804. for mine.

  805. The hymn

  806. writer says,

  807. his robes

  808. for mine,

  809. a wonderful

  810. exchange.

  811. Clothed in

  812. my sin,

  813. Christ suffered

  814. neath God's

  815. rage.

  816. Draped in his

  817. righteousness,

  818. I'm justified.

  819. In Christ,

  820. I live,

  821. for in my

  822. place,

  823. he died.

  824. His robes

  825. for mine,

  826. such anguish

  827. none can

  828. know.

  829. Christ,

  830. God's beloved,

  831. condemned as

  832. though his

  833. foe.

  834. He,

  835. as though I,

  836. accursed

  837. and left

  838. alone.

  839. I,

  840. as though he,

  841. embraced

  842. and welcomed

  843. home.

  844. Let's pray.

  845. Let's pray.
