  1. This week and next, we'll be taking a break from our normal verse-by-verse exposition of John's Gospel.

  2. I do promise we will get back to it eventually.

  3. We believe that normatively, this is the best course of action, verse-by-verse, through a book of the Bible, and it is normally what we do.

  4. However, from time to time, and for a specific purpose, it can be helpful to take a beat, summarize, at least in some measure, what the Bible teaches on a given topic.

  5. And so, we're going to take two weeks to think together about the offices of the church.

  6. Two weeks, because there are two offices.

  7. Two weeks, particularly because we really need to think about the office of deacon.

  8. This office has been neglected in the life of our church, and I want you to hear that I will be the very first to admit that this is to my shame.

  9. We should be doing better at this, and I have led the charge in not doing well at raising up and installing deacons.

  10. However, before we get there next week, this morning, I want you to lead you to think about the office of elder,

  11. and how the office of elder works alongside the congregation.

  12. That's going to help us next week as we think about how deacons then assist in all of that work.

  13. The church of Jesus Christ is precious because it is purchased by his blood.

  14. His universal church finds its expression in local churches.

  15. We exist because of his redeeming life, death, and resurrection.

  16. He loves us so much that he lived and died, was raised and ascended for us.

  17. He loves us so much that he has not left us alone.

  18. He sends his helper, the Holy Spirit.

  19. He has given us his word, and he has given us the church.

  20. He loves local churches.

  21. I'm so glad that Jesus is the head of the church, that he loves us far beyond our comprehension.

  22. He certainly loves you more than I could possibly love you.

  23. Amen.

  24. My love will falter and fail.

  25. His never does.

  26. He loves local churches such that he has given us instruction for how we are to govern the local church.

  27. The Bible says things about this, and because of his great love for us, we should pay attention to what it says.

  28. We call this polity.

  29. Every church has a polity.

  30. This word is from the Greek word for city.

  31. It means simply governance.

  32. How are we arranged, and how are we to operate together?

  33. There are all sorts of polities out there, the Episcopalians, the Presbyterians.

  34. We are congregationalists, which also breaks out in all different types of polities.

  35. Some churches will function congregationally.

  36. The congregation is a sort of democracy.

  37. Everything is brought to a vote, which tends to mean that nothing much happens at all.

  38. Some congregational churches are governed by kind of a corporate board type of model.

  39. Some have a single pastor, and then they have a deacon board, kind of quasi-elders,

  40. and they're either over that deacon board, or they're integrated within that deacon board.

  41. We don't think any of these models are biblical.

  42. We think the Bible model is elder-led congregationalism.

  43. Elder-led congregationalism.

  44. I think that the people who hold to these polities are Christ's, and I'm not throwing too much shade at them.

  45. But it's sometimes important to know that there's some things out there that may not be as biblically faithful as they ought to be

  46. to try to drive us to, well, then what does the Bible say?

  47. Does it have something to say about this?

  48. And we think that the Bible teaches elder-led congregationalism.

  49. And I want to add, as I think it may help us in these two weeks, we probably won't use this terminology very often,

  50. but I think it may be helpful to us to say elder-led, deacon-assisted congregationalism.

  51. Right?

  52. So, we're going to go to a number of texts today.

  53. We're going to start in Hebrews chapter 13.

    Hebrews 13 chapter mention

  54. I'm going to read verse 7, and then ask you to flip to verse 17 and 18.

  55. But before I read those, let's pray for God's blessing on our time.

  56. Father, we recognize humbly that you have saved us into a local church.

  57. And we are glad that we belong here if we are in Christ and we are members of this church

  58. and that you've given us instruction for how we are to govern for our good and for your glory.

  59. We also recognize that we need your help if we're to rightly understand this at all.

  60. So, help it to be important to everybody here,

  61. not just those who are given charge and have to lead,

  62. but also the entirety of the congregation,

  63. that they would see that they have a part to play in how we're meant to function together.

  64. And we pray all of this in the name of Christ.

  65. Amen.

  66. Alright, so Hebrews 13 and verse 7.

  67. There the author of Hebrews writes,

  68. Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God,

  69. consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith.

  70. And then jump to verse 17 and 18.

  71. Obey your leaders and submit to them,

  72. for they are keeping watch over your souls,

  73. as those who will have to give an account.

  74. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning,

  75. for that would be of no advantage to you.

  76. Pray for us, for we are sure that we have a clear conscience

  77. desiring to act honorably in all things.

  78. Our church, as I've said,

  79. believes that the most biblically faithful form of polity

  80. is what is called elder-led,

  81. and I'll insert deacon-assisted,

  82. congregationalism.

  83. I will unpack that deacon-assisted part next week,

  84. but you see from the title of this position,

  85. and more importantly from today's text,

  86. that God intends for there to be

  87. some measure of leadership in the church,

  88. and we will do well to consider the leadership of elders

  89. alongside the responsibilities of the whole congregation.

  90. It brings it into focus to think about it all together at the same time.

  91. So we'll do our best to get through that

  92. in the time we have allotted this morning.

  93. These two passages in Hebrews give us six exhortations toward church leaders,

  94. right?

  95. Your leaders.

  96. Remember, consider, imitate, obey,

  97. submit to them, and pray for them.

  98. So who are your leaders?

  99. If you are a member of this church,

  100. then your leaders are those men that you have deemed qualified

  101. to inhabit the office of elder.

  102. If you are not a member of this church,

  103. I hope you are a member of a gospel-preaching church,

  104. and perhaps this will prod you to think about who your leaders are.

  105. Or, if you're not a member of a gospel-preaching church,

  106. perhaps you should be considering this.

  107. How are these commands relevant to you

  108. if you don't know who your leaders are?

  109. Gifts given to you for your good and for God's glory.

  110. Now, these exhortations are fairly self-explanatory,

  111. but two of them need special attention.

  112. And for today, this is what we'll spend a little bit of time on.

  113. The first is obey.

  114. Obey your leaders.

  115. This Greek verb carries the idea of being persuaded by them.

  116. Remember verse 7.

  117. Remember, your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God,

  118. consider the outcome of their way of life

  119. and imitate their faith.

  120. We don't want to read verse 17 apart from verse 7,

  121. because the author of Hebrews is saying,

  122. these are men worth listening to.

  123. So not just any old thing that they say,

  124. but they're a type of person

  125. that we ought to be paying attention to.

  126. There's a type of authority called referent authority,

  127. and that is from every point of reference,

  128. every perspective,

  129. the person deserves your obedience.

  130. Paul writes in Titus chapter 1,

    Titus 1:7–9

  131. verse 7 through 9,

  132. of this office of elder,

  133. they're here called overseer.

  134. An overseer, as God's steward,

  135. must be above reproach.

  136. He must be arrogant, or quick-tempered,

  137. or a drunkard, or violent, or greedy for gain,

  138. but hospitable,

  139. a lover of good,

  140. self-controlled, upright,

  141. holy, and disciplined.

  142. He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught,

  143. so that he may be able to give instruction

  144. in sound doctrine,

  145. and also to rebuke those who contradict it.

  146. Will an elder ever be a perfect man?

  147. Not this side of glory, right?

  148. But when we look at those qualifications,

  149. and Titus,

  150. this is a man worth listening to,

  151. being persuaded by,

  152. and that's what's carried in that word.

  153. The other exhortation we should note

  154. is to submit to them.

  155. This Greek verb is found

  156. only here,

  157. in the New Testament,

  158. but it's often used

  159. in extra-biblical Greek literature.

  160. It connotes obedience

  161. to a person in a position

  162. of authority,

  163. such as,

  164. in some extra-biblical Greek literature,

  165. a colonel taking orders

  166. from a general.

  167. So, in this case,

  168. here the author is referring to

  169. positional authority, right?

  170. They've been put into this place,

  171. so both are this referent authority,

  172. they have the quality worth following,

  173. but also,

  174. they hold the position,

  175. and have been placed in that position,

  176. and we believe that the Lord helps us

  177. put the right people

  178. into those spots.

  179. So why

  180. should you

  181. remember,

  182. consider,

  183. imitate,

  184. obey,

  185. and submit

  186. to your elders?

  187. Well, first,

  188. they should,

  189. they have,

  190. faithful lives

  191. worth imitating.

  192. Not

  193. perfect lives,

  194. as I've said.

  195. I think it is appropriate

  196. to think of elders

  197. as

  198. elder brothers

  199. who

  200. lead by example.

  201. Both in holiness,

  202. out ahead,

  203. right,

  204. taking up God's word

  205. and pursuing righteousness,

  206. and

  207. when they fail

  208. in repentance.

  209. Elders are at their very best

  210. when their lives

  211. display

  212. the gospel

  213. of Jesus Christ,

  214. which means there is no

  215. pretense

  216. for perfection,

  217. but a genuine,

  218. honest,

  219. earnest pursuit

  220. of righteousness,

  221. forgiveness,

  222. and then when there's

  223. failure,

  224. a modeling of what it looks

  225. like to ask for forgiveness.

  226. Pick up,

  227. dust ourselves on,

  228. and press on

  229. in Christ,

  230. right?

  231. Have a confidence

  232. even before you

  233. that because

  234. we're bought

  235. with such a great price,

  236. we can rest

  237. in Jesus'

  238. completed work.

  239. Secondly,

  240. why should you remember,

  241. consider,

  242. imitate,

  243. obey,

  244. submit

  245. to your elders?

  246. There in the text,

  247. they are keeping

  248. watch

  249. over your souls

  250. as those

  251. who have to give

  252. an account.

  253. Well,

  254. I can tell you

  255. that the men

  256. of our church

  257. that you've installed

  258. as elders,

  259. I can certainly

  260. speak for myself,

  261. take this

  262. very,

  263. very seriously.

  264. A weighty task,

  265. a grace-imbued

  266. task.

  267. Jesus is the

  268. great shepherd,

  269. we are merely

  270. under shepherds,

  271. but we all recognize

  272. that we will

  273. stand before God

  274. and give an

  275. account for

  276. your souls.

  277. So we want to

  278. do this

  279. with great care.

  280. Will we be

  281. perfect?

  282. We will not.

  283. But we really

  284. want to labor

  285. to do this,

  286. which is why

  287. you should

  288. remember,

  289. consider,

  290. imitate,

  291. obey,

  292. and submit

  293. to your elders.

  294. Paul,

  295. when he is

  296. saying goodbye

  297. to the Ephesian

  298. elders in Acts

    Acts 20 chapter mention

  299. chapter 20

  300. and verse 28,

  301. says this,

  302. pay careful

  303. attention to

  304. yourselves

  305. and to all

  306. the flock

  307. in which the

  308. Holy Spirit

  309. has made you

  310. overseers,

  311. to care for

  312. the church

  313. of God

  314. which he

  315. obtained

  316. with his

  317. own blood.

  318. What a

  319. charge given

  320. to lead

  321. in a congregation.

  322. But to what

  323. extent is the

  324. author of Hebrews

  325. expecting his

  326. hearers to

  327. obey and submit

  328. to their

  329. leaders.

  330. Certainly not

  331. in everything.

  332. Certainly not

  333. outside the

  334. bounds of the

  335. Bible.

  336. But if he

  337. only intends

  338. to have them

  339. obey and

  340. submit to the

  341. Bible,

  342. why not just

  343. say that?

  344. I think

  345. because there

  346. are matters

  347. of application

  348. of the

  349. Bible,

  350. gray areas

  351. that require

  352. careful

  353. navigation

  354. and

  355. decisions

  356. that must

  357. be made.

  358. The Bible

  359. says nothing

  360. at all

  361. about our

  362. property.

  363. There's things

  364. that have to be

  365. carefully thought

  366. about.

  367. The Bible

  368. says nothing

  369. at all about

  370. what the

  371. appropriate set

  372. of programs

  373. might be for

  374. children at any

  375. given stage

  376. in the life

  377. of a church.

  378. There's decisions

  379. that need to be

  380. thought about

  381. and made.

  382. 1 Timothy

    1 Timothy 3:1–5

  383. chapter 3

  384. verses 1

  385. through 5

  386. qualifications

  387. here.

  388. Paul gives

  389. to Timothy

  390. the saying

  391. is trustworthy.

  392. If anyone

  393. aspires to

  394. the office

  395. of overseer

  396. he desires

  397. a noble

  398. task.

  399. Therefore

  400. an overseer

  401. must be

  402. above reproach,

  403. the husband

  404. of one

  405. wife,

  406. sober-minded,

  407. self-controlled,

  408. respectable,

  409. hospitable,

  410. able to

  411. teach,

  412. not a

  413. drunkard,

  414. not violent

  415. but gentle,

  416. not quarrelsome,

  417. not a lover

  418. of money.

  419. He must

  420. manage his

  421. own household

  422. well with

  423. all dignity,

  424. keeping his

  425. children submissive

  426. for if someone

  427. does not know

  428. how to manage

  429. his own

  430. household,

  431. how will

  432. he care

  433. for God's

  434. church?

  435. There's lots

  436. of detailed

  437. decisions

  438. that need

  439. to be made.

  440. And so I've

  441. said to you

  442. before and I'll

  443. say again,

  444. I think that

  445. in matters

  446. of prudence,

  447. wisdom,

  448. like taking

  449. up biblical

  450. data and

  451. understanding

  452. what the

  453. scripture says

  454. to us,

  455. but then

  456. thinking about

  457. how do we

  458. put that

  459. into action

  460. in the life

  461. of our

  462. church,

  463. so matters

  464. of prudence,

  465. wisdom,

  466. and also

  467. in matters

  468. of preference.

  469. So we don't

  470. have a members

  471. meeting and

  472. ask and

  473. vote on

  474. what time

  475. a meeting

  476. might start.

  477. This would be

  478. a simple,

  479. fairly benign

  480. example.

  481. But your elders

  482. are thinking

  483. about what

  484. would be best

  485. for the

  486. congregation.

  487. How do we

  488. think and

  489. order us

  490. so that we

  491. can accomplish

  492. the goals

  493. that the

  494. Lord has

  495. put before

  496. us?

  497. So we

  498. might decide

  499. on one

  500. time over

  501. another because

  502. we think

  503. it best.

  504. Prudence,

  505. preference.

  506. So elders

  507. have authority,

  508. a kind of

  509. authority.

  510. They are to

  511. teach the

  512. Bible and

  513. they are to

  514. make judgments

  515. in matters

  516. of gray

  517. areas of

  518. application

  519. according

  520. to Bible

  521. principles.

  522. elders

  523. exercise

  524. an

  525. authority

  526. but it

  527. is not

  528. a

  529. coercive

  530. authority.

  531. It's a

  532. persuasive

  533. authority.

  534. Come along

  535. with us.

  536. We want

  537. you to go

  538. where we're

  539. going.

  540. We love

  541. you.

  542. We're looking

  543. out for

  544. your souls.

  545. Framed

  546. that way,

  547. isn't it a

  548. wonderful thing

  549. to have

  550. leaders?

  551. Let's

  552. look now

  553. at another

  554. text.

  555. So turn

  556. with me,

  557. if you

  558. will,

  559. to Ephesians

  560. chapter

  561. four.

  562. I want

  563. you to

  564. see here

  565. leaders

  566. given to

  567. the church

  568. and the

  569. way that

  570. the church

  571. is a

  572. congregation

  573. is to

  574. function

  575. with

  576. leadership.

  577. I'll

  578. begin

  579. reading in

  580. verse

  581. 11.

  582. Just

  583. before this,

  584. Paul talked

  585. about Jesus

  586. ascending,

  587. also though

  588. that he

  589. descended

  590. and that

  591. he gave

  592. gifts to

  593. men,

  594. where it

  595. leads us

  596. up to

  597. verse 11.

  598. And there

  599. Paul writes,

  600. and he,

  601. that's

  602. Jesus Christ,

  603. gave the

  604. apostles,

  605. the prophets,

  606. the evangelists,

  607. the shepherds,

  608. and teachers

  609. to equip the

  610. saints for

  611. the work of

  612. ministry,

  613. for building

  614. up the body

  615. of Christ

  616. until we

  617. all attain

  618. to the

  619. unity of

  620. the faith

  621. and of

  622. the knowledge

  623. of the

  624. Son of

  625. God,

  626. to mature

  627. manhood,

  628. to the

  629. measure of

  630. the stature

  631. of the

  632. fullness

  633. of Christ,

  634. so that

  635. we may

  636. no longer

  637. be children

  638. tossed to

  639. and fro

  640. by the

  641. waves and

  642. carried about

  643. by every

  644. wind of

  645. doctrine,

  646. by human

  647. cunning,

  648. by craftiness

  649. in deceitful

  650. schemes.

  651. Rather,

  652. speaking the

  653. truth in

  654. love,

  655. we have

  656. to grow

  657. up in

  658. every way

  659. into him

  660. who is

  661. the head,

  662. into Christ,

  663. from whom

  664. the whole

  665. body,

  666. joined and

  667. held together

  668. by every

  669. joint with

  670. which it

  671. is equipped,

  672. when each

  673. part is

  674. working properly,

  675. makes the

  676. body grow

  677. so that it

  678. builds itself

  679. up in

  680. love.

  681. A beautiful

  682. picture of

  683. the church

  684. in action.

  685. Now this

  686. text begins

  687. with Jesus

  688. Christ giving

  689. gifts to

  690. the church.

  691. You see

  692. these in

  693. verse 11,

  694. the apostles,

  695. the prophets,

  696. a brief aside

  697. at this point,

  698. there's a lot

  699. of disagreement

  700. about these

  701. gifts in

  702. Christendom.

  703. I don't

  704. intend for

  705. this to be

  706. an exhaustive

  707. exposition

  708. of this

  709. passage,

  710. but an

  711. aside I

  712. think is

  713. helpful here.

  714. I believe

  715. that the

  716. apostles and

  717. prophets that

  718. Paul is

  719. referring to

  720. were modern

  721. apostles and

  722. prophets who

  723. were in the

  724. process of

  725. writing the

  726. New Testament

  727. and the

  728. Old Testament

  729. prophets as

  730. the books of

  731. the Old

  732. Testament were

  733. referred to

  734. as the

  735. prophets.

  736. I think that's

  737. what he's

  738. talking about.

  739. He's talking

  740. about those

  741. who were

  742. writing the

  743. canon at

  744. his time

  745. as well as

  746. those who

  747. had already

  748. written.

  749. If you

  750. look back

  751. a bit at

  752. Ephesians

    Ephesians 2:19

  753. chapter 2

  754. verse 19

  755. and 20,

  756. there he

  757. says,

  758. so then you

  759. are no

  760. longer

  761. strangers and

  762. aliens,

  763. but your

  764. fellow citizens

  765. with the

  766. saints and

  767. members of

  768. the household

  769. of God,

  770. built on

  771. the foundation

  772. of the

  773. apostles and

  774. prophets,

  775. Christ Jesus

  776. himself being

  777. the cornerstone.

  778. so I

  779. believe that

  780. the apostles

  781. and the

  782. prophets of

  783. Ephesians

  784. 4 and

  785. verse 11

  786. for us

  787. are the

  788. Old and

  789. New Testaments,

  790. our 66

  791. books of

  792. our canon,

  793. which we

  794. ought not

  795. belittle,

  796. but as I

  797. believe Paul

  798. is doing,

  799. magnify as

  800. a gift to

  801. the church.

  802. I think this

  803. is what he's

  804. communicating in

  805. verse 11.

  806. As he starts

  807. out, he

  808. gave the

  809. apostles, the

  810. prophets.

  811. We have the

  812. scripture.

  813. And then he

  814. goes on, the

  815. evangelists, the

  816. shepherds, and

  817. teachers.

  818. Many of you

  819. are using the

  820. same translation

  821. that I am

  822. this morning,

  823. the English

  824. Standard Version,

  825. and you may

  826. note that each

  827. of these roles

  828. are separated

  829. by a comma,

  830. but not

  831. shepherds, or

  832. you could insert

  833. pastors there,

  834. and teachers.

  835. You notice the

  836. commas?

  837. We know that

  838. ancient Greek

  839. did not have

  840. equivalent punctuation

  841. to our

  842. English, so

  843. this was a

  844. translative

  845. decision.

  846. The translators

  847. decided where to

  848. put the commas

  849. in, and they

  850. did not put a

  851. comma between

  852. shepherds and

  853. teachers.

  854. Now, I am very

  855. happy to say that

  856. the ESV

  857. translators are

  858. not anti-Oxford

  859. comma.

  860. If you know

  861. what I'm talking

  862. about, and you

  863. disagree with me,

  864. we can debate

  865. later.

  866. Oxford comma is

  867. a good comma,

  868. and it should

  869. remain in the

  870. English language.

  871. If you don't

  872. know what I'm

  873. talking about,

  874. that's fine, but

  875. this is a

  876. translative

  877. decision because

  878. the Greek word

  879. translated and

  880. can also be

  881. translated that

  882. is, or in

  883. particular.

  884. It can be

  885. translated various

  886. ways.

  887. So, it could

  888. read shepherds

  889. that is teachers,

  890. or shepherds in

  891. particular teachers,

  892. which is a little

  893. clunky, but does

  894. give us a better

  895. idea of who

  896. these men are,

  897. these gifts

  898. given.

  899. Many simply

  900. say of this

  901. role that they

  902. are shepherd

  903. teachers, shepherd

  904. dash teachers, or

  905. pastor dash

  906. teachers, and we

  907. have further

  908. evidence that this

  909. is Paul's meaning

  910. in 1 Timothy

    1 Timothy 5 chapter mention

  911. chapter 5 and

  912. verse 17.

  913. There he says,

  914. let the elders

  915. who rule well be

  916. considered worthy

  917. of double honor.

  918. I think in this

  919. case he's talking

  920. about both the

  921. honor of respect

  922. and position, but

  923. also income for

  924. their living,

  925. especially those

  926. who labor in

  927. preaching and

  928. teaching.

  929. Elders,

  930. teachers.

  931. So, evangelists

  932. and elders are

  933. gifts given to

  934. the church by

  935. Christ, but for

  936. what reason?

  937. Why?

  938. Why are they

  939. given?

  940. Verse 12, to

  941. equip the saints

  942. for the work of

  943. ministry, for

  944. building up the

  945. body of Christ.

  946. Now, notice, once

  947. again, a

  948. translator decision

  949. to not put a

  950. comma after the

  951. word saints.

  952. If you were to

  953. look at that part

  954. of verse 12,

  955. that I just read,

  956. to equip the

  957. saints, what if

  958. it said to

  959. equip the saints,

  960. comma, for the

  961. work of ministry,

  962. comma, for

  963. building up the

  964. body of Christ.

  965. If they were to

  966. punctuate it that

  967. way, one of the

  968. tasks given to

  969. these evangelists

  970. and these pastor

  971. teachers would be

  972. the work of

  973. ministry.

  974. So, why, why

  975. can we know, why

  976. did they make the

  977. translative decision

  978. to not put a

  979. comma after saints,

  980. and then we read,

  981. to equip the

  982. saints for the

  983. work of ministry,

  984. right?

  985. And then, for

  986. building up the

  987. body of Christ

  988. modifies that.

  989. What is the

  990. work of ministry?

  991. It's the building

  992. up the body of

  993. Christ.

  994. How can we know

  995. this just looking

  996. at it?

  997. Are they just

  998. arbitrarily putting

  999. commas where

  1000. commas feel good?

  1001. No.

  1002. No, because

  1003. Paul keeps

  1004. writing.

  1005. We've got to

  1006. look at the

  1007. context of

  1008. what's happening

  1009. here.

  1010. What happens

  1011. beyond this

  1012. in the text,

  1013. right?

  1014. There's this

  1015. aim, verse 13,

  1016. of attaining

  1017. the unity of

  1018. the faith and

  1019. knowledge of

  1020. the Son of

  1021. God to

  1022. mature manhood,

  1023. to the measure

  1024. of the stature

  1025. of the fullness

  1026. of Christ.

  1027. That we would

  1028. grow into

  1029. maturity.

  1030. That we would

  1031. be people who

  1032. are not

  1033. children,

  1034. tossed about

  1035. by waves

  1036. and carried

  1037. about by

  1038. every doctrine,

  1039. human cunning,

  1040. craftiness,

  1041. and deceitful

  1042. schemes.

  1043. Beloved,

  1044. do we not

  1045. see a world

  1046. of professing

  1047. Christians

  1048. thrown about,

  1049. back and

  1050. forth,

  1051. by the waves,

  1052. carried about

  1053. by every

  1054. wind of

  1055. doctrine.

  1056. It's just

  1057. astounding to

  1058. me, the

  1059. things that

  1060. people believe

  1061. as they come

  1062. out of

  1063. Christian leaders'

  1064. mouths.

  1065. So anti-

  1066. Bible.

  1067. Are you

  1068. catching?

  1069. This is

  1070. congregational

  1071. work, right?

  1072. We're supposed

  1073. to be speaking

  1074. the truth to

  1075. one another.

  1076. I'm also a

  1077. congregant.

  1078. Speak the

  1079. truth to me.

  1080. I don't

  1081. want to be

  1082. a child.

  1083. I want to

  1084. grow up

  1085. into Christ-likeness.

  1086. I want to

  1087. be steady

  1088. in storms

  1089. because I

  1090. know the

  1091. truth.

  1092. And Paul's

  1093. saying, we

  1094. do that

  1095. with one

  1096. another.

  1097. Let's not

  1098. be this

  1099. immature

  1100. thing, but

  1101. verse 15

  1102. says,

  1103. rather,

  1104. speaking the

  1105. truth in

  1106. love,

  1107. we are to

  1108. grow up in

  1109. every way

  1110. into him

  1111. who is the

  1112. head,

  1113. into Christ,

  1114. from whom

  1115. the whole

  1116. body,

  1117. joined and

  1118. held together

  1119. by every

  1120. joint with

  1121. which it is

  1122. equipped,

  1123. when each

  1124. part is

  1125. working

  1126. properly,

  1127. makes the

  1128. body grow,

  1129. so that it

  1130. builds itself

  1131. up in

  1132. love.

  1133. That is the

  1134. essence of

  1135. congregationalism.

  1136. Us helping

  1137. every Christian,

  1138. helping every

  1139. Christian in

  1140. the local

  1141. church grow

  1142. in Christ-likeness.

  1143. What a

  1144. compelling picture

  1145. that should be

  1146. for all of

  1147. us.

  1148. And I want to

  1149. commend you as a

  1150. church.

  1151. You do this

  1152. well.

  1153. Just before we

  1154. met, I had a

  1155. conversation with

  1156. a brother who's

  1157. grieving, another

  1158. brother in

  1159. unrepentant sin,

  1160. and he's asking

  1161. the question,

  1162. is it time for

  1163. me to take a

  1164. next step with

  1165. him, to press

  1166. upon him?

  1167. He said with

  1168. tears welling,

  1169. I'm not sure

  1170. that he's in

  1171. Christ.

  1172. I'm concerned

  1173. for his soul.

  1174. What a

  1175. conversation to

  1176. have with a

  1177. congregant.

  1178. A wonderful

  1179. thing to think

  1180. and talk and

  1181. pray about next

  1182. steps to happen.

  1183. So this is

  1184. the work.

  1185. This is the

  1186. work that's

  1187. going on.

  1188. It's equipping

  1189. the saints for

  1190. the work of

  1191. ministry, for

  1192. building up

  1193. the body of

  1194. Christ.

  1195. Elders lead by

  1196. teaching, in

  1197. word and in

  1198. deed, giving

  1199. theological

  1200. foundation and

  1201. example of

  1202. application so

  1203. that the church

  1204. as a whole does

  1205. this work of

  1206. ministry, this

  1207. building up of

  1208. the body of

  1209. Christ.

  1210. It bears

  1211. repeating.

  1212. Elders exercise

  1213. in authority, but

  1214. it is not a

  1215. coercive authority,

  1216. it is a

  1217. persuasive

  1218. authority.

  1219. It's an

  1220. authority of

  1221. counsel.

  1222. Come to the

  1223. word with us.

  1224. We want to

  1225. show you the

  1226. way of God,

  1227. how we should

  1228. pursue, what

  1229. we should say

  1230. to one another.

  1231. It also bears

  1232. saying that the

  1233. evangelists share

  1234. the gospel, that

  1235. the church would

  1236. increase through

  1237. conversion, and

  1238. that the church

  1239. as a whole would

  1240. share the gospel

  1241. for that very

  1242. same end.

  1243. The evangelists

  1244. help equip us

  1245. that we might

  1246. share the

  1247. gospel.

  1248. But while

  1249. evangelists are a

  1250. gift to the

  1251. church, we do

  1252. not hold that it

  1253. is an office of

  1254. the church, a

  1255. formal position

  1256. found here.

  1257. Evangelistic people

  1258. most certainly are a

  1259. gift to the

  1260. church.

  1261. Now I hope that I

  1262. have sufficiently

  1263. shown you the

  1264. authority of

  1265. counsel that an

  1266. elder holds,

  1267. right?

  1268. But what about the

  1269. authority of the

  1270. congregation?

  1271. congregation?

  1272. Does the

  1273. congregation hold

  1274. any authority?

  1275. Yes, it does.

  1276. The congregation

  1277. or the church as

  1278. a whole is doing

  1279. two things in this

  1280. text.

  1281. Number one, teaching

  1282. the truth, right?

  1283. Teaching the truth,

  1284. attaining the unity

  1285. of the faith, the

  1286. knowledge of the

  1287. Son of God, verse

  1288. 13.

  1289. This is a pushback

  1290. against doctrine

  1291. blowing people

  1292. around.

  1293. So the congregation

  1294. is teaching the

  1295. truth and applying

  1296. the truth.

  1297. Verse 15, we're

  1298. growing up in every

  1299. way into him who

  1300. is the head.

  1301. Then you see all

  1302. this activity in

  1303. verse 16, these

  1304. joints held together

  1305. doing this work.

  1306. Right?

  1307. So teaching the

  1308. truth and applying

  1309. the truth.

  1310. So the congregation,

  1311. the local church

  1312. as a whole, is

  1313. responsible for

  1314. discipling,

  1315. helping people

  1316. grow in their

  1317. pursuit of

  1318. Christ, and

  1319. they're responsible

  1320. for doctrine.

  1321. What is that

  1322. truth?

  1323. Being led by the

  1324. elders of the

  1325. church to

  1326. disciple and to

  1327. hold sound

  1328. doctrine.

  1329. the congregation

  1330. has a different

  1331. authority from

  1332. the elders.

  1333. The local church

  1334. as a whole holds

  1335. the authority of

  1336. command or, if

  1337. you like,

  1338. coercion set

  1339. against persuasion.

  1340. I don't love it.

  1341. I like counsel and

  1342. command personally,

  1343. but persuasion and

  1344. coercion works.

  1345. God delegates

  1346. authority, and

  1347. it always has

  1348. limits, and

  1349. it is always

  1350. subservient to

  1351. the one who

  1352. delegated it.

  1353. Bad authority

  1354. is always bad.

  1355. Most of us

  1356. have had some

  1357. experience with

  1358. bad authority.

  1359. If you haven't,

  1360. live a little

  1361. longer.

  1362. You're going to

  1363. see authority

  1364. not exercised

  1365. properly, but

  1366. that doesn't mean

  1367. we should throw

  1368. away authority.

  1369. authority

  1370. submitted to

  1371. God is

  1372. always good.

  1373. Always good.

  1374. It's aimed at

  1375. blessing for

  1376. us.

  1377. So, I want

  1378. to take you to

  1379. some additional

  1380. text to show

  1381. you the two

  1382. areas that the

  1383. congregation holds

  1384. authority in,

  1385. our discipling

  1386. and doctrine.

  1387. We're going to

  1388. do this at a

  1389. clip, because

  1390. I'm really

  1391. supposed to be

  1392. talking about

  1393. elders, but I

  1394. want to show

  1395. you what are

  1396. elders leading

  1397. the congregation

  1398. to do together.

  1399. discipling.

  1400. Matthew chapter

    Matthew 28 chapter mention

  1401. 28.

  1402. Go ahead and

  1403. join me there.

  1404. I'm going to

  1405. get water.

  1406. I've got to

  1407. get ready for

  1408. this fast

  1409. reading I'm

  1410. about to

  1411. do.

  1412. So,

  1413. Matthew 28.

1414. This is the Great Commission.

1415. Jesus came and said to them,

  1416. verse 18,

1417. all authority in heaven and on earth

1418. has been given to me.

  1419. There's that ultimate authority.

  1420. Go therefore

1421. and make disciples of all nations,

1422. baptizing them in the name of the Father

1423. and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

  1424. teaching them to observe

1425. all that I have commanded you

1426. and behold, I'm with you always

1427. to the end of the age.

1428. On the heels of Ephesians chapter 4,

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

1429. do you see the church's work

1430. in the middle of that text?

  1431. I hope you do.

1432. This is a commission given to the church

1433. and how do we do that

  1434. in visible expression?

  1435. In local churches.

1436. So we, as a church,

  1437. are meant to go,

  1438. make disciples,

  1439. baptize them,

1440. welcoming them into the membership

  1441. of the church,

  1442. teaching them to observe

1443. all that I have commanded you.

  1444. Right?

  1445. Grow up into Christ-likeness.

1446. Don't be tossed to and fro

1447. by every wind of doctrine.

  1448. Right?

1449. Now, turn with me backwards

1450. in the book of Matthew

  1451. to chapter 16.

  1452. I'll begin reading in verse 13

  1453. because the context

  1454. has some relevance.

  1455. Now, when Jesus came

  1456. into the district

  1457. of Caesarea Philippi,

  1458. he asked his disciples,

  1459. who do people say

1460. that the Son of Man is?

  1461. And they said,

1462. some say John the Baptist,

  1463. others say Elijah,

  1464. and others Jeremiah,

1465. or one of the prophets.

  1466. He said to them,

1467. but who do you say

  1468. that I am?

  1469. Simon Peter replied,

  1470. you are the Christ,

1471. the Son of the living God.

  1472. Way to go, Peter.

1473. Knocked it out of the park.

  1474. And Jesus answered him,

  1475. blessed are you,

  1476. Simon Barjona,

  1477. for flesh and blood

1478. has not revealed this to you.

  1479. Right?

  1480. It's by grace

1481. that he gets that answer right.

1482. But my Father who is in heaven.

  1483. And I tell you,

  1484. you are Peter,

  1485. and on this rock,

1486. that truth that he is the Christ,

1487. I will build my church.

1488. And the gates of hell

1489. shall not prevail against it.

  1490. Right?

  1491. There's our confidence

  1492. for Matthew 28.

  1493. Jesus is with us

1494. to the end of the age,

1495. and he has all authority.

  1496. He's building his church,

1497. and so go and do this work.

  1498. And then he says,

  1499. in verse 19,

1500. I will give you the keys

1501. of the kingdom of heaven.

1502. And whatever you bind on earth

1503. shall be bound in heaven,

1504. and whatever you loose on earth

1505. shall be loosed in heaven.

  1506. Right?

  1507. This is the symbol

  1508. of the authority

  1509. given to the church.

1510. But we don't really fully comprehend

  1511. what he's talking about

  1512. at this point.

  1513. Okay?

  1514. We're given keys,

  1515. we're binding,

  1516. and we're loosing.

1517. We don't have to go far

  1518. to understand.

  1519. Go to Matthew chapter.

  1520. This will feel disjointed

  1521. for just a moment,

  1522. but hear it out.

  1523. Beginning in verse 15.

1524. If your brother sins against you,

1525. go and tell him it's fault

1526. between you and him alone.

1527. If he listens to you,

1528. you have gained your brother.

1529. Do you see Ephesians 4 in this?

  1530. Speaking the truth

1531. and love to one another.

1532. Do you see it in there?

  1533. Your brother sins.

1534. You go show him his sin.

1535. We all need help doing this.

1536. We all have blind spots.

1537. Like, we're going to do things.

  1538. We're going to err.

1539. We're going to realize it at times.

1540. We're not going to realize it at times.

1541. We need to be approached

  1542. that we might repent

  1543. and press on.

  1544. Right?

1545. This is how we grow

  1546. in Christlikeness.

  1547. Verse 16.

1548. But if he does not listen,

1549. take one or two others

  1550. along with you

  1551. that every charge

  1552. may be established

  1553. by the evidence

1554. of two or three witnesses.

1555. You make it more serious.

  1556. Multiple people come

  1557. and they say,

1558. no, no, we see this issue too.

  1559. Right?

1560. We want to speak the truth

  1561. and love to you

  1562. that you may grow

  1563. in Christ.

  1564. And there's another opportunity

  1565. for repentance.

  1566. To listen.

  1567. In verse 17,

1568. if he refuses to listen

  1569. to them,

1570. tell it to the church.

  1571. And if he refuses

1572. to listen even to the church,

  1573. right?

  1574. So there's a step here

  1575. where the church now

  1576. as a total

1577. is speaking to this person

  1578. saying,

1579. this is not the way

  1580. of a Christ follower.

  1581. Then the church

1582. is to let him be to you

  1583. as a Gentile

  1584. and a tax collector.

  1585. That is to say,

  1586. to put them outside

  1587. of the church.

  1588. Right?

  1589. This is the process

  1590. we often call

  1591. church discipline.

  1592. Right?

1593. But I think every step

  1594. in this is discipline.

  1595. It's discipling.

  1596. Right?

1597. We are teaching the truth

  1598. that a person

  1599. might faithfully follow Jesus.

  1600. And if we find

1601. that they're not in Christ,

  1602. then the loving thing

1603. to say to them is,

  1604. we don't believe

  1605. you're in Christ.

1606. Now how does this connect

1607. back to Matthew chapter 16?

    Matthew 16 chapter mention

  1608. Verse 18 of chapter 18.

1609. Truly I say to you,

1610. whatever you bind on earth

1611. shall be bound in heaven.

1612. And whatever you loose on earth

1613. shall be loosed in heaven.

  1614. The exact same phrase.

  1615. Keys of the kingdom.

  1616. Doing this careful work.

1617. So if you didn't hear

  1618. Ephesians chapter 4

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  1619. through that,

  1620. maybe you'll hear it

  1621. the other way around.

  1622. Right?

1623. So back in Ephesians 4 verse 11,

    Ephesians 4:11

  1624. he gave apostles,

  1625. prophets, evangelists,

  1626. shepherd teachers

  1627. to equip the saints

1628. for the work of ministry

  1629. for building up

  1630. the body of Christ

  1631. until we all attain

1632. to the unity of the faith

  1633. and of the knowledge

1634. of the Son of God

  1635. to mature manhood

  1636. to the measure

  1637. of the stature

  1638. of the fullness

  1639. of Christ.

  1640. Right?

  1641. Working us

  1642. together,

  1643. verse 16,

  1644. the body would grow

  1645. so that it builds

  1646. itself up

  1647. in love.

  1648. Right?

1649. This is the discipling work

  1650. given to the congregation,

  1651. all of us,

  1652. together.

  1653. William Gurnall,

  1654. a 17th century

  1655. Puritan minister,

  1656. once said this,

1657. God would not rub so hard

  1658. if it were not

1659. to fetch out the dirt

  1660. that is ingrained

  1661. in our natures.

  1662. God loves purity

  1663. so well

  1664. that he would rather

  1665. see a hole

  1666. than a spot

  1667. in his child's garments.

  1668. Secondly,

  1669. doctrine.

  1670. The church,

  1671. as a whole,

  1672. is meant to defend

  1673. doctrine.

  1674. Paul writes

  1675. in Galatians chapter 1

    Galatians 1 chapter mention

  1676. to the church

  1677. in Galatia,

  1678. but even if we

  1679. or an angel

  1680. from heaven

  1681. should preach to you

  1682. a gospel contrary

1683. to the one we preached

  1684. to you,

  1685. let him be

  1686. accursed.

1687. As we have said before,

1688. so now I say again,

  1689. if anyone is preaching

  1690. to you a gospel

  1691. contrary to the one

  1692. you received,

  1693. let him be

  1694. accursed.

  1695. This would be

  1696. an exercise

  1697. of the keys.

  1698. The truth

  1699. must be

  1700. preserved

  1701. and

  1702. defended.

  1703. David Gibson

  1704. in an article

  1705. entitled

  1706. Assumed Evangelicalism,

  1707. some reflections

  1708. in route

  1709. to denying

  1710. the gospel.

  1711. Quote,

  1712. you may have heard

  1713. the story

  1714. of the Mennonite

  1715. Brethren movement.

  1716. One particular

  1717. analysis

  1718. goes like this.

  1719. The first generation

  1720. believed

  1721. and proclaimed

  1722. the gospel

  1723. and thought

  1724. that there were

  1725. certain social

  1726. entailments.

  1727. The next generation

  1728. assumed the gospel

  1729. and advocated

  1730. the entailments.

  1731. the third generation

  1732. denied the gospel

  1733. and all that were

  1734. left

  1735. were the entailments.

  1736. The practice

  1737. but not the gospel

  1738. itself.

  1739. The whole congregation

  1740. defends

  1741. doctrine.

  1742. Again,

1743. back to Acts chapter 20,

    Acts 20 chapter mention

  1744. Paul's farewell

  1745. to the Ephesian elders.

  1746. I read verse 28

  1747. already,

  1748. pay careful attention

  1749. to yourselves

1750. and to all the flock

1751. in which the Holy Spirit

  1752. has made you overseers

1753. to care for the church

  1754. of God

  1755. which he obtained

  1756. with his own blood.

  1757. I know,

  1758. he goes on,

  1759. that after my departure

  1760. fierce wolves

1761. will come in among you

  1762. not sparing

  1763. the flock.

  1764. And,

  1765. this will make you

  1766. shudder,

  1767. from among your

  1768. own selves

  1769. will arise

  1770. men speaking

  1771. twisted things

  1772. to draw away

  1773. the disciples

  1774. after them.

  1775. Why did he say

  1776. to pay careful

  1777. attention

  1778. to the flock?

  1779. Because there will be

  1780. people from outside

  1781. and people from

  1782. inside

  1783. that will lead

  1784. people

  1785. astray.

  1786. Jude writes

  1787. in verse 3 and 4,

  1788. Beloved,

1789. although I was very eager

  1790. to write to you

  1791. about our common salvation,

  1792. I found it necessary

  1793. to write appealing

  1794. to you

  1795. to contend

  1796. for the faith

  1797. that was once

  1798. for all

  1799. delivered

  1800. to the saints.

  1801. For certain people

  1802. have crept in

  1803. unnoticed

  1804. who long ago

  1805. were designated

  1806. for this condemnation,

  1807. ungodly people

  1808. who pervert

1809. the grace of our God

  1810. into sensuality

  1811. and deny

  1812. our only Master

  1813. and Lord,

  1814. Jesus Christ.

  1815. So we're

  1816. to defend

  1817. doctrine.

  1818. We've talked

  1819. long,

  1820. too much,

1821. I'm going to skip it today,

  1822. I've got a whole bunch

  1823. of notes about it,

  1824. about theological triage,

1825. but let me just sum it

  1826. by saying

  1827. we are confessional people,

  1828. it is important

1829. for us to take up

  1830. the word,

  1831. understand what it says,

  1832. write documents,

  1833. decide those things

  1834. that are

  1835. worthy of dying for

  1836. and those things

  1837. that can be

  1838. debated.

  1839. We think it's important

  1840. to make truth claims

  1841. concerning what

  1842. the Bible teaches

  1843. on any particular

  1844. topic.

  1845. topic.

  1846. So elders

  1847. are given

  1848. as gifts

  1849. to the church

  1850. to lead

  1851. the congregation

  1852. in the important

  1853. work of discipling

  1854. and defending

  1855. doctrine.

  1856. But,

  1857. what does

  1858. elder-led

  1859. congregationalism

  1860. look like

  1861. in action?

  1862. If you're

  1863. totally unfamiliar

  1864. with this polity,

  1865. how might it be

  1866. observed

  1867. and this in closing?

  1868. You will notice

  1869. sermons preached

  1870. and classes taught,

  1871. discipling relationships

  1872. where the Bible

  1873. is read

  1874. and studied

  1875. and applied,

  1876. earnest prayer

  1877. for one another,

  1878. sin confronted

  1879. and corrected,

  1880. discipline processes

  1881. carried out

  1882. when necessary,

  1883. evangelism

  1884. and missions

  1885. to the end

  1886. of the earth

  1887. to all peoples,

  1888. welcoming

  1889. new members

  1890. through the

  1891. ordinance of

  1892. baptism,

  1893. celebrating

  1894. the Lord's

  1895. supper together

  1896. regularly

  1897. with joy,

  1898. confessionalism

  1899. and all

  1900. that is in

  1901. tales,

  1902. all this

  1903. careful work

  1904. of theological

  1905. triage,

  1906. I could go

  1907. on.

  1908. but note

  1909. that you,

  1910. the congregation,

  1911. the church

  1912. as a whole

  1913. have a profound

  1914. and precious

  1915. responsibility

  1916. and God

  1917. has given

  1918. to the church

  1919. elders

  1920. to help.

  1921. May we continue

  1922. by grace

  1923. under the authority

  1924. of the giver

  1925. of all good things

  1926. to govern ourselves

  1927. according to his word

1928. for the good of his people

  1929. and for the witness

  1930. of the gospel

1931. to the glory of Christ.

  1932. Let's pray.
