  1. We've been a little topsy-turvy this morning. They probably have caught on that the printer went kaput.

  2. There's a whole story there.

  3. Yeah, thank you to the band for being willing to pivot.

  4. I typically try to pay attention to the song just before preaching so I know when it's ending.

  5. We clearly caught that I wasn't sure what we were about to do there.

  6. We're going to begin this morning in Acts chapter 6, verses 1 through 7.

    Acts 6:1–7

  7. There's one other text we'll go to before we read it together.

  8. I'd like to say a few introductory comments.

  9. Last week in this, we're taking a break from our normal verse-by-verse exposition of a Bible text

  10. because from time to time and for a specific purpose,

  11. it can be helpful to summarize what the Bible teaches on a given topic.

  12. There's a topic before us. What does the Bible say about this?

  13. Now, this is the second of two weeks taken to think together about the offices of the church.

  14. As Gary mentioned earlier in his prayer, church polity or governance is what we're thinking about,

  15. particularly because we need to think as a church about the office of deacon.

  16. As stated last week, this office has been neglected in the life of our church,

  17. and I want you to hear, this is exactly what I said last week,

  18. that I will be the first to admit that this is to my shame.

  19. There's much that I could say about that.

  20. I'll spare you all of my thoughts there.

  21. To get there, to get to talking about deacons,

  22. Last week we considered the office of elder and how that office works with the congregation.

  23. How we together are led by elders to do congregational work.

  24. The church of Jesus Christ is precious because it is purchased by his blood.

  25. His universal church finds its expression in local churches.

  26. We exist, this gathering here this morning,

  27. because of his redeeming life, death, and resurrection.

  28. He loves us so much that he lived and died, was raised and ascended for us.

  29. He loves us so much that he has not left us alone.

  30. He sends his helper, the Holy Spirit.

  31. He has given us his word and he has given us the church.

  32. He loves local churches.

  33. I hope you love the local church in just a small measure of the way he loves local churches.

  34. And he loves local churches so much that he's given us instruction for how we are to govern the local church.

  35. Polity, not boring at all.

  36. And it matters for every single one of us.

  37. Every church has a polity.

  38. All are functioning in some way, some better than others.

  39. We want to be as biblical as we can be in our polity

  40. because we think that Jesus loves the church

  41. and he's given us instructions for how we are to be effective at the mission that he's given to us.

  42. We most regularly call our polity elder-led congregationalism.

  43. And I added last week for our thinking, elder-led, deacon-assisted congregationalism.

  44. Now, I'm not sure that deacon-assisted is the best phrase.

  45. I think it could be misunderstood what I mean by that.

  46. It's probably not going to make its way into our normative vernacular concerning our polity,

  47. but I want to be clear today what I mean by that

  48. and help us think about the role this office serves in the church.

  49. I hope that I showed you sufficiently last week from Ephesians 4

  50. that the congregation of a local church,

  51. the whole congregation,

  52. is to teach one another the truth and apply that truth in our lives.

  53. So the congregation is responsible for holding to sound doctrine.

  54. The truth we're supposed to speak to each other in love, we find in Ephesians 4.

  55. Then again, I hope sufficiently, I showed you from Matthew 16 and then Matthew 18,

  56. that the congregation is meant to correct sin in one another's lives.

  57. We're supposed to point out to one another when we're sinning against each other

  58. and against the Lord for the sake of repentance.

  59. And in some process and sad cases, to see somebody outside of the church

  60. because they can't possibly be a Christian if they're living in unrepentant.

  61. Sin.

  62. So the congregation is responsible for discipling.

  63. Perhaps nowhere more clearly states the purpose of the church

  64. than Matthew chapter 28, verses 18 through 20.

    Matthew 28:18–20

  65. There Jesus says,

  66. All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

  67. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations,

  68. baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

  69. teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you,

  70. and behold, I am with you always to the end of the age.

  71. This is the mission that we call the Great Commission given to the church.

  72. And of course, that works itself out in local congregations.

  73. So the congregation is doing the holding sound doctrine work and the discipling work.

  74. Congregation as a whole.

  75. Mission of the church in total.

  76. And greater certainly includes the lesser.

  77. So it's the mission of our church.

  78. This congregational process is meant to be led by elders and assisted by deacons.

  79. Now, here is where that phrase, right, could be so clearly misunderstood.

  80. Perhaps supported by deacons?

  81. Rather than me going through a litany of other possible verbs,

  82. allow me just a quick analogy to kind of explain what I mean.

  83. There's a really wonderful, I would argue, seminal work by a man named Colin Marshall

  84. and another named Tony Payne called The Trellis and the Vine.

  85. And in that book, which is really a plea for congregationalism,

  86. for the whole church to be doing the work of ministry,

  87. they start with an analogy.

  88. And one of the two men, I can't remember which,

  89. talks about a jasmine vine that he has growing on his fence.

  90. And it's a flourishing, beautiful vine.

  91. And behind that vine, attached to the fence, is a trellis.

  92. And so what he sets up is that there are some works that need to be going on

  93. in the life of a church that are to support the most important work

  94. that should be going on in the life of the church.

  95. So vine work in a church is the work of ministering the gospel to one another, right?

  96. This holding sound doctrine and this discipling work that we talked about last week.

  97. The trellis work is that work which holds up the vine.

  98. So the trellis is not unnecessary, but it's necessary for the vine work to flourish.

  99. And so that's what I mean when I say deacon-assisted or perhaps supported, right?

  100. Holding up, making possible this very important work of congregationalism.

  101. So I hope that gets our brains moving in the right direction.

  102. In Acts chapter 6, verses 1 through 7.

    Acts 6:1–7

  103. Let me pray before I read it.

  104. Father God, we do thank you for your great love for the church.

  105. We recognize that Jesus shed his very blood for the people that gather together on Sunday mornings

  106. and sing and pray, open your word, that we might worship Christ rightly.

  107. What a thing it is that today we are gathered, that people are gathered all over the place.

  108. What a wonderful picture of your grace.

  109. Even just those in this room are immeasurable reason to praise you.

  110. We thank you that you've given us your word and you've shown us how we're to be ordered

  111. under your good, loving, kind authority.

  112. We humbly recognize that we need your help to rightly understand it and give it application.

  113. We pray to this end that you would help us for the glory of Jesus.

  114. Amen.

  115. All right.

  116. Acts chapter 6, beginning in verse 1.

    Acts 6 chapter mention

  117. Now, in these days, when the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint by the Hellenists

  118. arose against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution.

  119. That would have been Greek-speaking Jews.

  120. And the twelve summoned the full number of the disciples and said,

  121. It is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables.

  122. Therefore, brothers, pick out from among you seven men of good repute,

  123. full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we will appoint to this duty.

  124. But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.

  125. And what they said pleased the whole gathering.

  126. And they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit,

  127. and Philip, and Procurus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicholas,

  128. a proselyte of Antioch.

  129. I read those so confidently, you think that's how those are pronounced.

  130. I don't have a clue.

  131. These they set before the apostles, and they prayed and laid their hands on them.

  132. And the word of God continued to increase, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem.

  133. And a great many of the priests became obedient to the faith.

  134. All right, so we can make some profitable observations about the office of deacon from this text.

  135. This is understood, this text, to be the origin of the diaconal ministry.

  136. These seven, the very first deacons.

  137. So that's the first observation.

  138. Here it is.

  139. We think in the history of the church, these are the first deacons.

  140. So we begin with a problem, right?

  141. In these days, the disciples were increasing in number.

  142. There's a great number of people professing faith in Christ.

  143. The church in Jerusalem is growing in droves,

  144. and this complaint arises between two ethnic groups of people, right?

  145. There's a distribution problem going on, right?

  146. The growth is a good problem, but with that growth comes some complexity.

  147. Some challenges have arisen in the process.

  148. This division along these cultural lines,

  149. and it's coming out in a very practical issue, right?

  150. Widows are being denied daily distribution.

  151. They're not getting the food that they need.

  152. It's not merely a logistical failure.

  153. It's a threat to the very unity of the church.

  154. Notice how it is that the apostles respond.

  155. It is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables.

  156. I don't believe that this is a statement of superiority.

  157. I don't think they're saying, well, it's below us

  158. that we would spend any of our time in service this way.

  159. That word serve is where we get our word for deacon from.

  160. I don't think they're saying that at all.

  161. What I think they're saying is that it's a statement of priority.

  162. The apostles understand that Christ has entrusted them

  163. with the ministry of the word and prayer, verse 4.

  164. If they neglect that, the entire church is going to suffer for it.

  165. So what do they do?

  166. There's a real need going on, but there's a priority at play.

  167. So they call together the congregation to appoint qualified men.

  168. Pick out from among yourselves seven men of good repute,

  169. full of the Spirit, and of wisdom.

  170. Men who have professed faith in Christ and given evidence of that,

  171. and men who are wise.

  172. They take men and they set them apart to handle

  173. the practical needs of the church,

  174. ensuring fairness, care, unity.

  175. And then note the result in verse 7.

  176. And the word of God continued to increase.

  177. You see the connection there?

  178. Remember, when the churches rightly ordered,

  179. the word set themselves to this work of prayer and ministry of the word.

  180. And so the word of God continued to increase.

  181. I think we would all say yes and amen to that, right?

  182. That the word of God would go forth,

  183. take root in people's lives,

  184. show the evidence of repentance and faith.

  185. So that's the first thing we notice.

  186. This is the initial.

  187. This is the situation when we see this diaconal ministry arise.

  188. Second, we can note some things about the nature

  189. and then the specific purposes of the office of deacon.

  190. Now, the church has historically recognized this passage

  191. as the prototype of what this type of ministry should look like.

  192. Deacons are servants.

  193. Servants.

  194. That's what the word means.

  195. Intentional, recognized, qualified servants

  196. who are tasked with meeting the tangible needs in the body.

  197. You could separate spiritual and physical needs in this way.

  198. Physical needs are being met by these individuals.

  199. They are not elders.

  200. They are not spiritual overseers,

  201. but they are servants of Christ for the good of his church.

  202. So this is the nature of who these people are to be.

  203. From Acts 6, we can draw out four purposes,

  204. specific purposes of the diaconal office.

  205. Why should we call people to serve in this way?

  206. The first purpose is to care for the physical needs of the church.

  207. It's fairly on the nose.

  208. Here in Acts 6, they appointed men

  209. who will do the work of caring for these neglected widows.

  210. We're not given details.

  211. We don't know exactly how this took out,

  212. but it is probable that as the growing number of this early church was large,

  213. that these men were not themselves doing all of the work.

  214. It's just my guess.

  215. It's my years of serving and leading.

  216. I just don't feel like seven is quite enough to get the task done,

  217. although I don't know the total number.

  218. But I would be willing to bet

  219. that they were organizing people to accomplish the task.

  220. They are serving by helping others serve this need.

  221. And this ensured that, number one,

  222. there was physical well-being amongst this group of widows,

  223. so that their spiritual well-being could be addressed.

  224. They just eliminated the issue of being taken care of now,

  225. and now their spiritual well-being can be the focus.

  226. And that thirdly, it served as a witness to the onlooking world.

  227. Just think, Jesus says in John 13 and verse 35,

  228. by this all people will know that you are my disciples

  229. if you have love for one another.

  230. So there it is on display as this group of widows was being neglected,

  231. and now those needs are being met.

  232. There are people in place to make sure

  233. that there's some kind of mechanism

  234. that these women would be loved,

  235. and the onlooking world can marvel

  236. at that kind of service to them.

  237. So they're to care for the physical needs of the church.

  238. Secondly, we can see in Acts 6

  239. that they're to protect the unity of the church.

  240. There's something going on here.

  241. There's this division with the presenting issue.

  242. The deacons step into this sensitive situation

  243. and ensure that care is distributed fairly and wisely.

  244. Deacons are a kind of shock absorber,

  245. Mark Deber likes to say,

  246. in the life of the church.

  247. They step into moments of tension,

  248. not to wield authority,

  249. but to preserve peace

  250. around things that are physical in nature.

  251. How?

  252. With plans to meet those physical concerns.

  253. They catch the,

  254. hey, I noticed.

  255. A handrail would be really nice right here.

  256. Those types of things.

  257. Keep me from falling down the concrete steps out front.

  258. That was a real issue

  259. that was really met in the life of our church.

  260. It was brought to our attention,

  261. and it needed to be.

  262. So they protect the unity of the church in that way.

  263. Thirdly,

  264. to support the ministry of the word.

  265. It's been said in measure,

  266. but it deserves more of our attention.

  267. The apostles are clear.

  268. We will devote ourselves to prayer

  269. and to the ministry of the word.

  270. We're going to set our attention

  271. on these two tasks.

  272. Deacons do not replace this ministry.

  273. They protect this ministry.

  274. Again, shock absorbed.

  275. They buffer.

  276. So that ministry can be focused on.

  277. When deacons are faithful,

  278. elders are freed.

  279. When elders are freed,

  280. the word of God is central

  281. in the life of the church.

  282. And when the word is central,

  283. the church is healthy.

  284. This is the downstream effect.

  285. Invariably,

  286. this is how it works.

  287. It's not a competition of roles.

  288. It's a cooperation of callings.

  289. Now,

  290. I want to speak briefly

  291. to my own failure

  292. to work hard

  293. at promoting this office

  294. in our church at this point.

  295. There's a lot of reasons

  296. that I could explain to you.

  297. If you come to our members meeting tonight,

  298. I'll say a bit more.

  299. But I do want to say

  300. it is in no way

  301. because I have a desire

  302. to be in control of anything.

  303. This has been levied at me

  304. from time to time.

  305. Right?

  306. But please note,

  307. this has never been

  308. why I've neglected

  309. and neglected to be sure.

  310. This has been the impulse for me

  311. that largely has driven

  312. my neglect of this good.

  313. And then I want to

  314. bring the corrective as well.

  315. Let me read to you a quote

  316. from The Trellis and the Vine,

  317. the book that I mentioned previously.

  318. So remember the imagery, right?

  319. We're working on vine work.

  320. The vine work is the thing

  321. that's so critical and important.

  322. It is the mission of the church.

  323. And then the trellis work

  324. is the thing that's coming up

  325. and supporting it,

  326. making it possible.

  327. Okay?

  328. So, quote.

  329. That's the thing about trellis work.

  330. It tends to take over

  331. from vine work.

  332. Perhaps because trellis work

  333. is easier and less personally threatening.

  334. Vine work is personal

  335. and requires much prayer.

  336. It requires us to depend on God

  337. and to open our mouths

  338. and speak God's word

  339. in sum to another person.

  340. By nature,

  341. we shy away from this.

  342. Trellis work also often

  343. looks more impressive

  344. than vine work.

  345. It's more visible and structural.

  346. We can point to something tangible,

  347. a committee, an event,

  348. a program, a budget,

  349. an infrastructure,

  350. and say that we have achieved something.

  351. The concentration on trellis work

  352. that is so common in many churches

  353. derives from an institutional view

  354. of Christian ministry.

  355. It is very possible for churches,

  356. Christian organizations,

  357. and whole denominations

  358. to be given over totally

  359. to maintaining their institution.

  360. Whatever the reason,

  361. there is no doubt

  362. that in many churches,

  363. maintaining and improving the trellis

  364. constantly takes over

  365. from tending to the vine.

  366. And this was early in our thinking

  367. about the church

  368. as we planted

  369. and wanted to see

  370. good and healthy relationships

  371. within the life of the church,

  372. as we wanted to see the church

  373. being congregational,

  374. doing this important work

  375. of defending sound doctrine

  376. and discipling one another.

  377. And so what I ended up doing

  378. was running around in circles

  379. around everybody

  380. to try to keep you free to do that.

  381. That's my main problem.

  382. I think at the core of it all,

  383. as I want to help you do

  384. the thing that you do so well,

  385. loving and serving one another

  386. with the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  387. Perhaps, in some measure,

  388. keeping tasks off your plate

  389. has helped you be a congregation

  390. that is well concerned

  391. with discipling.

  392. I don't know.

  393. Maybe I left you a little bit bored

  394. and then you had to actually

  395. minister the gospel to one another.

  396. However,

  397. as we continue to grow,

  398. your elders need to maintain

  399. the bandwidth

  400. to focus all of our time

  401. and energy

  402. on prayer

  403. and ministry of the word.

  404. To be devoted to that.

  405. Because frankly,

  406. it's enough.

  407. It is a massive,

  408. massive work.

  409. To pray for you

  410. and to minister

  411. the word of God to you

  412. on all of the various ways

  413. that that can be done.

  414. If our polity is going

  415. to keep working,

  416. you don't want

  417. one of your pastors

  418. putzing around

  419. with a copier

  420. trying to get the bulletins printed

  421. at 4 a.m. this morning.

  422. It's not profitable

  423. for you ultimately.

  424. Right?

  425. That copier has not been

  426. working right since September.

  427. It's not the way

  428. I should be spending my time.

  429. I recognize that fully

  430. and it's largely my fault

  431. that I'm doing it.

  432. So don't hear me

  433. accusing you at all

  434. of that.

  435. You want

  436. my prayers

  437. and my careful preparation

  438. if we are to hope

  439. that our good vine work

  440. will go on.

  441. We together

  442. have to be concerned

  443. about that

  444. and think about

  445. how we together

  446. keep that health going.

  447. And it's going to mean

  448. that we have to build

  449. careful,

  450. careful strategic trellis

  451. to hold that vine up.

  452. I have too often

  453. misspent my time

  454. in ways I thought

  455. would best serve you

  456. but I believe

  457. may have been

  458. to your detriment.

  459. We can't run the experiment

  460. a different way

  461. so it's really hard to know

  462. if I'm right about that

  463. at all.

  464. But what I am confident of

  465. if the Bible instructs us

  466. to do something

  467. we should do it

  468. and trust that it's

  469. ultimately good.

  470. Whether or not

  471. our experience affirms it

  472. if God's commanded it

  473. we should do it

  474. and trust

  475. that it's going to work out

  476. for good.

  477. This problem

  478. needs fixing.

  479. Deacons are at least

  480. a significant part

  481. of the solution.

  482. So that was the third one.

  483. The most primary one

  484. I think

  485. to support the ministry

  486. of the word.

  487. Fourthly

  488. it's worth mentioning

  489. deacons exist

  490. to model

  491. Christ-like service.

  492. Practical

  493. Christ-like

  494. service.

  495. This I think

  496. is implicit

  497. in this text

  498. the character

  499. of these men

  500. but we need

  501. to step out of it

  502. a little bit

  503. at this point

  504. to see it

  505. most clearly.

  506. Deacons

  507. dignify

  508. unseen

  509. work.

  510. They elevate

  511. humble

  512. service.

  513. They show

  514. the church

  515. that greatness

  516. in the kingdom

  517. is measured

  518. not by

  519. platform

  520. but by

  521. sacrifice.

  522. Turn with me

  523. if you will

  524. to 1 Timothy

    1 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  525. chapter 3.

  526. Let's look at

  527. some of the

  528. qualifications

  529. that are outlined

  530. there for us

  531. for deacons.

  532. Now

  533. we can't

  534. derive

  535. clearly

  536. from

  537. Acts

    Acts 6 chapter mention

  538. chapter 6

  539. that there's

  540. an office

  541. being established

  542. here

  543. but this

  544. is where

  545. these two

  546. things

  547. come together

  548. for us.

  549. So

  550. just

  551. after Paul

  552. has talked

  553. about

  554. qualifications

  555. for

  556. elders

  557. he goes

  558. on

  559. in verse

  560. 8

  561. to say

  562. deacons

  563. likewise.

  564. So this

  565. is the

  566. word

  567. that could

  568. be

  569. translated

  570. servant

  571. servants

  572. likewise

  573. but he's

  574. clearly

  575. talking about

  576. an office

  577. in this

  578. case

  579. because he's

  580. putting

  581. qualifications

  582. on it

  583. just like

  584. he did

  585. for the

  586. office

  587. of

  588. elder.

  589. So

  590. deacons

  591. likewise

  592. must be

  593. dignified

  594. not double

  595. tongued

  596. not addicted

  597. to much

  598. wine

  599. not greedy

  600. for

  601. dishonest

  602. gain.

  603. Notice

  604. there

  605. what

  606. Paul

  607. is

  608. emphasizing

  609. the

  610. character

  611. of

  612. these

  613. people

  614. dignified

  615. worthy

  616. of respect

  617. serious

  618. about

  619. holy

  620. things

  621. not

  622. double

  623. tongued

  624. consistent

  625. in speech

  626. trustworthy

  627. self

  628. controlled

  629. not

  630. mastered

  631. by their

  632. appetites

  633. financially

  634. honest

  635. driven

  636. by

  637. gain

  638. and more

  639. verse 9

  640. they must

  641. hold

  642. the

  643. mystery

  644. of

  645. the

  646. faith

  647. with

  648. a

  649. clear

  650. conscience

  651. deacons

  652. must

  653. be

  654. theologically

  655. sound

  656. they are

  657. not

  658. teachers

  659. in the

  660. same

  661. way

  662. that

  663. elders

  664. are

  665. but

  666. they

  667. must

  668. love

  669. and

  670. live

  671. the

  672. truth

  673. the

  674. reason

  675. for

  676. service

  677. in the

  678. church

  679. must

  680. be

  681. coming

  682. out

  683. of

  684. the

  685. truth

  686. of

  687. the

  688. gospel

  689. verse

  690. 10

  691. says

  692. and let

  693. them

  694. also

  695. be

  696. tested

  697. first

  698. there's

  699. no need

  700. to

  701. rush

  702. into

  703. this

  704. certainly

  705. 17

  706. years

  707. is not

  708. rushing

  709. the

  710. church

  711. observes

  712. discerns

  713. and

  714. confirms

  715. the whole

  716. congregation

  717. does

  718. this

  719. Paul

  720. even

  721. includes

  722. the

  723. household

  724. verse

  725. 12

  726. let

  727. deacons

  728. each

  729. be the

  730. husband

  731. of one

  732. wife

  733. managing

  734. their

  735. children

  736. and

  737. their

  738. own

  739. households

  740. well

  741. similarly

  742. to

  743. elders

  744. right

  745. how can

  746. you give

  747. any

  748. leadership

  749. in the

  750. church

  751. if

  752. your

  753. household

  754. itself

  755. is

  756. not

  757. ordered

  758. right

  759. the

  760. home

  761. is

  762. the

  763. proving

  764. ground

  765. of

  766. ministry

  767. a man

  768. who

  769. cannot

  770. shepherd

  771. his

  772. home

  773. cannot

  774. be

  775. trusted

  776. to

  777. serve

  778. Christ's

  779. church

  780. and

  781. then

  782. comes

  783. a

  784. promise

  785. verse

  786. 13

  787. for

  788. those

  789. who

  790. serve

  791. well

  792. as

  793. deacons

  794. gain

  795. a

  796. good

  797. standing

  798. for

  799. themselves

  800. and

  801. also

  802. great

  803. confidence

  804. in

  805. the

  806. faith

  807. faithful

  808. service

  809. deepens

  810. assurance

  811. and

  812. strengthens

  813. witness

  814. so

  815. so these

  816. people

  817. serve

  818. to

  819. model

  820. Christ

  821. like

  822. service

  823. it's

  824. not

  825. limited

  826. to

  827. them

  828. we

  829. should

  830. all

  831. be

  832. serving

  833. one

  834. another

  835. but

  836. they're

  837. to

  838. give

  839. us

  840. leadership

  841. in

  842. this

  843. regard

  844. so

  845. the

  846. new

  847. testament

  848. presents

  849. two

  850. distinct

  851. offices

  852. elders

  853. and

  854. deacons

  855. elders

  856. lead

  857. through

  858. prayer

  859. and

  860. ministry

  861. of the

  862. word

  863. deacons

  864. serve

  865. through

  866. tangible

  867. ministry

  868. and

  869. practical

  870. care

  871. help

  872. the

  873. congregation

  874. do

  875. the

  876. work

  877. that

  878. the

  879. congregation

  880. is

  881. meant

  882. to

  883. do

  884. hold

  885. that

  886. sound

  887. doctrine

  888. and

  889. disciple

  890. one

  891. another

  892. in

  893. the

  894. truth

  895. both

  896. of

  897. those

  898. offices

  899. are

  900. essential

  901. they're

  902. essential

  903. because

  904. they're

  905. biblical

  906. whether

  907. or not

  908. we

  909. fully

  910. comprehend

  911. how

  912. it

  913. all

  914. works

  915. out

  916. a

  917. church

  918. with

  919. elders

  920. but

  921. no

  922. deacons

  923. here

  924. this

  925. church

  926. a

  927. church

  928. with

  929. elders

  930. but

  931. no

  932. deacons

  933. will

  934. be

  935. strained

  936. a

  937. church

  938. with

  939. deacons

  940. but

  941. no

  942. elders

  943. will

  944. be

  945. unanchored

  946. Christ

  947. in his

  948. wisdom

  949. and his

  950. great

  951. love

  952. for the

  953. local

  954. church

  955. has

  956. given

  957. us

  958. both

  959. Charles

  960. Spurgeon

  961. once

  962. said

  963. this

  964. would

  965. have

  966. been

  967. on

  968. your

  969. bulletin

  970. today

  971. if

  972. you

  973. had

  974. it

  975. quote

  976. deprive

  977. the

  978. church

  979. of

  980. her

  981. deacons

  982. and

  983. their

  984. loss

  985. would

  986. be

  987. the

  988. shaking

  989. of

  990. the

  991. pillars

  992. of

  993. our

  994. spiritual

  995. house

  996. and

  997. would

  998. cause

  999. a

  1000. desolation

  1001. on

  1002. every

  1003. side

  1004. end

  1005. quote

  1006. isn't

  1007. that

  1008. great

  1009. man

  1010. Spurgeon

  1011. said

  1012. if we

  1013. lose

  1014. the

  1015. deacons

  1016. of

  1017. the

  1018. church

  1019. the

  1020. church

  1021. will

  1022. be

  1023. in

  1024. shambles

  1025. so let's

1026. think about a little bit of application

  1027. and then I'll

  1028. close

  1029. number one

  1030. honor the office

  1031. we

1032. put myself at the front of the line

  1033. have not

  1034. done well

  1035. if we had

  1036. we'd have more deacons

1037. deacons are set apart by the church

  1038. recognized for their godliness

  1039. entrusted with real responsibility

1040. as we work to establish more deacons

1041. pray for your elders in their nominating efforts

1042. and pray for the whole church in their affirming efforts

1043. your elders want to bring to you

1044. people we think are qualified to do this

1045. you have to help us to be sure that this is

  1046. right

  1047. once we have

  1048. pray for them

  1049. be encouraging to them

  1050. jump in and help

  1051. as they give us

  1052. direction

  1053. in this physical

  1054. service

  1055. secondly

  1056. it's worth mentioning

1057. that we ought to aspire

  1058. to the character

  1059. even if you're never

  1060. to hold the office

1061. you're called to the same

  1062. Christ-like maturity presented

  1063. in first timothy

  1064. these

  1065. qualifications in chapter three

  1066. are not

  1067. extraordinary

  1068. they are exemplary

1069. but we should all be striving

  1070. to be godly

  1071. in this way

1072. they show us what normal

  1073. Christianity looks like

  1074. when it's

  1075. taken seriously

  1076. pursue

  1077. godliness

  1078. show up

  1079. serve

1080. whether or not you hold

  1081. the office

  1082. third

  1083. consider the call

  1084. the church

  1085. needs

  1086. faithful deacons

  1087. we may be coming

  1088. and speaking to you

  1089. at some point

  1090. or you may find

  1091. that you have

  1092. particular gifting

  1093. and you may want

1094. to offer it to us

  1095. hey I think

  1096. there's a place

  1097. I could jump in

  1098. and I'm willing

  1099. to receive some scrutiny

1100. and I want to see

  1101. if maybe I could

  1102. serve the church

  1103. in higher order

  1104. and fourthly

  1105. and extraordinarily

  1106. practically

  1107. if you're a member

  1108. of our church

  1109. come to tonight's

  1110. members meeting

  1111. now we will not

  1112. be nominating

  1113. anyone to the role

  1114. this evening

  1115. but we're going

  1116. to propose a structure

  1117. for nominations

  1118. and talk a bit

  1119. about the present

  1120. needs

  1121. and how we all

1122. have a part to play

  1123. in meeting

  1124. those specific needs

1125. how we can do this

  1126. better together

  1127. so in conclusion

  1128. beloved

  1129. the office of deacon

  1130. is not merely

  1131. about logistics

  1132. it is about

  1133. the gospel

  1134. when deacons

  1135. serve well

  1136. the needy

  1137. are cared for

  1138. the church

  1139. is unified

  1140. the elders

  1141. are freed

  1142. and the word

  1143. of God

  1144. advances

1145. and in all of it

  1146. the supremacy

  1147. of Jesus Christ

  1148. is experienced

  1149. proclaimed

  1150. and displayed

  1151. to the very ends

  1152. of the earth

  1153. let's pray together
