  1. Amen and good morning. Please take your copy of God's Word and join me in John chapter 8.

    John 8 chapter mention

  2. ! We're back in John. It's been a minute. Our text for today is verses 48 through 59. I'm very grateful this morning to be back in our study of John's Gospel.

  3. In fact, I'm so happy to be back in this book that I'm going to skip introductory comments and just get right to the text.

  4. So let's read it beginning in verse 48, ending at the end of the chapter, and then I'll remind us a little bit where we are and set us up for our study.

  5. But first, let's pray for God's favor on our time in His Word.

  6. Father, as we take up Your Word together this morning, we do so humbly.

  7. We want to rightly understand it. We want it to have its proper effect on our hearts.

  8. And we recognize that we cannot do this apart from the help of Your Spirit.

  9. We recognize that Your Word was written for Your glory and for our good.

  10. And so we ask that You would help us to believe its promises and obey its commands and have affection for You, its author.

  11. And we pray that You'll help us to this end. Amen.

  12. John chapter 8, beginning in verse 48 and following.

    John 8 chapter mention

  13. The Jews answered Him,

  14. Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and have a demon?

  15. Jesus answered,

  16. I do not have a demon, but I honor my Father and You dishonor me.

  17. Yet I do not seek my own glory. There is one who seeks it, and He is the judge.

  18. Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death.

  19. The Jews said to Him,

  20. Now we know that you have a demon.

  21. Abraham died, as did the prophets.

  22. Yet you say, if anyone keeps my word, he will never taste death.

  23. Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died, and the prophets died?

  24. Who do you make yourself out to be?

  25. Jesus answered,

  26. If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing.

  27. It is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say He is our God.

  28. But you have not known Him.

  29. I know Him.

  30. If I were to say that I do not know Him, I would be a liar like you.

  31. But I do know Him, and I keep His word.

  32. Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day.

  33. He saw it and was glad.

  34. So the Jews said to Him,

  35. You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?

  36. Jesus said to them,

  37. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  38. Before Abraham was, I am.

  39. So they picked up stones to throw at him,

  40. but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple.

  41. There are passages in Scripture where the temperature rises.

  42. You can feel it even across the centuries.

  43. I try to read text well for you.

  44. Of course, I wasn't there.

  45. I don't know the tone in the voice.

  46. But you could read this so flatly and miss that there's a tension growing here.

  47. John chapter 8, the whole chapter,

    John 8 chapter mention

  48. it's a chapter where it's just the tension is building and building and building.

  49. The conversation between Jesus and the religious leaders,

  50. that's who this term, the Jews, is referring to,

  51. has been building layer upon layer,

  52. until what we see here is not a polite disagreement,

  53. but it's open hostility.

  54. The tension is white hot at this point.

  55. And if you have any doubt of that,

  56. the last verse affirms what I just said, right?

  57. Murderous intent comes to play at the very end of the chapter.

  58. But our text begins,

  59. The Jews answered him.

  60. Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and have a demon?

  61. Don't let your familiarity with the text

  62. dull the shock of this moment.

  63. These are not fringe skeptics.

  64. These are the religious leaders.

  65. They're significant men.

  66. These are men who know the scriptures,

  67. who claim to represent God.

  68. And yet, when the Son of God stands before them,

  69. they do not recognize him.

  70. And even worse, they slander him.

  71. They don't just disagree with Jesus.

  72. They despise Jesus.

  73. They call him a Samaritan,

  74. questioning his ethnic purity,

  75. his orthodoxy,

  76. his place among God's people.

  77. They don't know this at all.

  78. Jesus is not a Samaritan.

  79. And they have no clue,

  80. but they are using it pejoratively.

  81. And if that isn't enough,

  82. they go further.

  83. They say that he has a demon,

  84. that he is possessed.

  85. They attribute the works and words

  86. of the Son of God

  87. to the powers of darkness.

  88. To me, all of this

  89. just seems to be taking stabs at him.

  90. It's ad hominem attacks at this point.

  91. Not considering his arguments any longer.

  92. They're listening,

  93. but it seems like they're half listening

  94. to what he has to say.

  95. And then just going after the man.

  96. You're a Samaritan.

  97. You're demon-possessed.

  98. And what we see here

  99. is not just a historical moment,

  100. although it is that.

  101. It's a record of what happened.

  102. But it's also a mirror

  103. held up to the human heart.

  104. Because, apart from grace,

  105. this is how we all respond to Christ.

  106. And yet,

  107. in the face of this hostility,

  108. Jesus responds with clarity,

  109. with dignity,

  110. and with truth.

  111. And in just a few words,

  112. he reveals two realities

  113. that every one of us

  114. must reckon with this morning.

  115. Those two are,

  116. to be our outline for today.

  117. Number one,

  118. that Jesus is the eternal God.

  119. And that number two,

  120. Jesus offers eternal life in himself.

  121. So if you like even simpler outlines,

  122. eternal God,

  123. eternal life.

  124. Jesus is clearly presented in this text

  125. as the eternal God.

  126. And I don't want to rush into it

  127. without at least taking a little moment

  128. to define the word eternal.

  129. It's an adjective that describes time.

  130. To say that something is eternal

  131. is to say that time

  132. has no bearing on it.

  133. It will go on forever.

  134. Jesus is eternal.

  135. He has existed in eternity past

  136. and will exist in eternity future.

  137. No beginning and no end.

  138. And this is true

  139. because Jesus is the eternal God.

  140. God is not merely a God,

  141. but the eternal God.

  142. God has been presenting us

  143. with a dilemma

  144. all throughout his writing.

  145. I've lamented a couple of times

  146. this morning with a few of you

  147. about how the way we preach,

  148. which I commend,

  149. otherwise I would just stop doing it,

  150. taking bits of text at a time,

  151. often leads us to forget

  152. the total narrative,

  153. what's going on in the totality of the text.

  154. The sermon would be way too long

  155. if I preached the entire book of John

  156. on a Sunday morning.

  157. We need to break it down

  158. and consider things bit by bit

  159. and piece by piece,

  160. but let's not lose sight

  161. of the larger themes being developed.

  162. John's been doing this work

  163. of presenting this dilemma.

  164. What will you do with Jesus?

  165. We see receiving him

  166. and we see rejecting him.

  167. We find ourselves in a chapter

  168. that is all about rejection.

  169. Jesus is too audacious

  170. to just be a good teacher.

  171. You must think him a liar,

  172. just inventing falsehood,

  173. or a lunatic.

  174. Perhaps he actually believed

  175. what he said about himself

  176. and was absolutely crazy.

  177. Or, and what I posit to you,

  178. that what he said is true

  179. and therefore you must worship him

  180. as Lord.

  181. Maybe you've heard that trilemma structure

  182. before, liar, lunatic, or Lord.

  183. In verses 39 through 47,

  184. just preceding our text,

  185. Jesus has exposed false devotion to God.

  186. That's what they're responding to here

  187. in verse 48.

  188. He says in verse 46,

  189. Which one of you convicts me of sin?

  190. If I tell the truth,

  191. why do you not believe me?

  192. Whoever is of God,

  193. verse 47,

  194. hears the words of God.

  195. The reason why you do not hear them

  196. is that you are not of God.

  197. And it's in response to that

  198. that our text begins,

  199. The Jews answered him.

  200. I mentioned it really briefly earlier,

  201. but this little phrase,

  202. the Jews,

  203. most regularly in the book of John

  204. is referring to these religious leaders.

  205. And there's some contextual evidence

  206. that that is the case.

  207. That's who he's speaking to right now

  208. in the temple.

  209. Are we not right in saying

  210. that you are Samaritan

  211. and have a demon?

  212. Notice their confidence.

  213. They're not really asking questions.

  214. This is rhetorical to be sure.

  215. Our punctuation puts it as a question.

  216. They're not really asking Jesus

  217. to bring clarity to their thoughts about him.

  218. They're convinced that they are correct.

  219. And yet,

  220. they're completely wrong.

  221. This is one of the sobering realities

  222. that the Bible presents to us.

  223. Sincerity does not equal belief.

  224. These men are confident

  225. and they are deaf

  226. to the words of Christ.

  227. Verse 47,

  228. whoever is of God

  229. hears the words of God.

  230. The reason why you do not hear them

  231. is that you are not of God.

  232. Jesus has just said this to them.

  233. And instead of humbling themselves,

  234. hearing this difficult thing,

  235. asking for clarifying questions,

  236. what you've said is hard to hear.

  237. Help us understand what you mean.

  238. Instead,

  239. they harden themselves against him.

  240. This is exactly what Scripture

  241. tells us to expect

  242. apart from the work of the Spirit

  243. in our lives.

  244. It comes in

  245. and softens our hearts.

  246. 1 Corinthians 2,

  247. in verse 14,

  248. Paul says,

  249. The natural person does not accept

  250. the things of the Spirit of God,

  251. for they are folly to him.

  252. Left to ourselves,

  253. we do not drift toward Christ.

  254. We drift away.

  255. We resist him.

  256. We do not naturally submit.

  257. We naturally push back.

  258. We sang a song just a moment ago.

  259. First line,

  260. My Lord, I did not choose you,

  261. for that could never be.

  262. My heart would still refuse you

  263. had you not chosen me.

  264. If you felt any objection

  265. to that song,

  266. it's derived directly from Scripture,

  267. from John chapter 15,

    John 15 chapter mention

  268. in verse 16,

  269. where Jesus says,

  270. You did not choose me,

  271. but I chose you

  272. and appointed you

  273. that you should go

  274. and bear fruit.

  275. And the emphasis of that song

  276. is that we would be humble

  277. and recognize

  278. that it's the loving kindness

  279. of God to us in Christ

  280. that has saved our souls.

  281. The doctrine of divine election

  282. in no way mitigates

  283. human responsibility.

  284. The Bible teaches both.

  285. And you can say,

  286. Nathan, that is not logical,

  287. and I will just go,

  288. Well, then, okay.

  289. The Bible says both things,

  290. and we want to hold both honestly.

  291. The sovereignty of God's salvation,

  292. divine election,

  293. and human responsibility.

  294. We see this laced

  295. all throughout John's gospel.

  296. The doctrine of divine election

  297. is not meant to make us

  298. proud and condemning.

  299. What it's meant to do

  300. is rightly humble us

  301. and work gratitude

  302. in our hearts.

  303. Jesus isn't pulling punches

  304. in chapter 8.

  305. Young people,

  306. I don't know if you know

  307. what pulling a punch is.

  308. You pull a punch when you swing

  309. and you don't quite deliver the punch.

  310. It's like you resist

  311. the full impact.

  312. Maybe you've pretend

  313. hit somebody before

  314. and you don't quite make contact.

  315. That's what that phrase means.

  316. Jesus isn't doing that.

  317. He is fully indicting

  318. these men

  319. for their rejection

  320. of the truth.

  321. While I hold

  322. the divine election,

  323. I hold it firmly

  324. in my closed fist.

  325. We cannot miss this.

  326. These men

  327. are responsible

  328. for the rejection

  329. of the Lord Jesus

  330. as the Christ.

  331. Notice Jesus' response.

  332. He answers them.

  333. Verse 49,

  334. I do not have a demon,

  335. but I honor my father

  336. and you dishonor me.

  337. He doesn't say,

  338. well, of course you don't believe me.

  339. Their actions are held culpable

  340. for their actions.

  341. He deals with the demonic accusation plainly.

  342. I do not have a demon.

  343. And the Samaritan accusation

  344. by restating

  345. that God is his father.

  346. They're trying to diminish his purity

  347. and he is raising the bar

  348. on who he is.

  349. The inciting incident

  350. between Jesus

  351. and these men

  352. was recorded in chapter 5

  353. where Jesus heals a man

  354. on the Sabbath

  355. and then states

  356. in John 5, 17,

  357. my father is working

  358. until now

  359. and I am working.

  360. So again,

  361. big picture contextually.

  362. Go back to the beginning

  363. of 5, 17.

  364. And we know

  365. when he says this,

  366. my father is working

  367. until now

  368. and I am working,

  369. exactly what he meant

  370. because John records

  371. their response

  372. with an explanation.

  373. Verse 18 of chapter 5,

  374. John says,

  375. this was why the Jews

  376. were seeking

  377. all the more

  378. to kill him

  379. because not only

  380. was he breaking the Sabbath,

  381. but he was even calling God

  382. his own father,

  383. making himself

  384. equal with

  385. God.

  386. He was claiming

  387. to be God

  388. in doing this.

  389. He will continue

  390. to make these claims

  391. right up to today's text

  392. and beyond it.

  393. Now,

  394. if you are not God,

  395. then it is a grave evil

  396. to call yourself

  397. God.

  398. No one in this room

  399. can make this claim.

  400. No one should claim

  401. that we are

  402. little g gods.

  403. This is a great heresy,

  404. a grave,

  405. grave evil.

  406. If Jesus was a liar

  407. or a lunatic,

  408. they had every right

  409. to be angry at him.

  410. It would have been proper

  411. for them to think him

  412. blasphemous,

  413. evil,

  414. punishment should come,

  415. stoning was the punishment

  416. for blasphemy.

  417. We should be angered.

  418. It would be righteous

  419. to be angered

  420. by a person

  421. claiming to be

  422. God.

  423. However,

  424. Jesus is God.

  425. It is good and proper

  426. for God

  427. to call himself

  428. God.

  429. And John is laboring

  430. to make this

  431. point.

  432. He begins

  433. this great work

  434. with these words,

  435. John chapter 1,

    John 1 chapter mention

  436. beginning in verse 1

  437. and following.

  438. In the beginning

  439. was the Word,

  440. and the Word

  441. was with God,

  442. and the Word

  443. was God.

  444. He was in the beginning

  445. with God.

  446. All things

  447. were made

  448. through him,

  449. and without him

  450. was not anything

  451. made that was made.

  452. Now bring the next

  453. verses into our context.

  454. In him

  455. was life,

  456. and the life

  457. was the light

  458. of men.

  459. The light

  460. shines in the darkness,

  461. and the darkness

  462. has not

  463. overcome it.

  464. The introductory

  465. words to this

  466. gospel account

  467. are presenting

  468. Jesus

  469. as the Christ,

  470. as God

  471. himself.

  472. self.

  473. Like,

  474. come into the world

  475. as light

  476. to conquer

  477. darkness.

  478. Then we can jump

  479. down just a bit

  480. after a bit of

  481. language about

  482. John the Baptist

  483. to verse 9

  484. of chapter 1.

  485. There John writes,

  486. the true light,

  487. which gives light

  488. to everyone,

  489. was coming

  490. into the world.

  491. He was in the world,

  492. and the world

  493. was made through him,

  494. yet the world

  495. did not know him.

  496. He came to his own.

  497. And his own people

  498. did not

  499. receive him.

  500. This is what we're

  501. looking at right now.

  502. It's playing out.

  503. But to all who did

  504. receive him,

  505. who believed in his name,

  506. he gave the right

  507. to become

  508. children

  509. of God,

  510. who were born

  511. not of blood,

  512. not because they

  513. are ethnically Jewish,

  514. nor of the will

  515. of the flesh,

  516. not because they

  517. just hoped enough,

  518. did enough,

  519. nor of the will

  520. of man,

  521. but of God.

  522. These men,

  523. his own people,

  524. did not receive him.

  525. Rather,

  526. they call him

  527. demon-possessed.

  528. Isaiah chapter 5,

    Isaiah 5:20

  529. verse 20,

  530. says,

  531. woe to those

  532. who call evil good

  533. and good evil.

  534. I think it's important

  535. at this point

  536. to note

  537. that sometimes

  538. resistance to the

  539. words of God

  540. looks religious.

  541. Now,

  542. notice what Jesus

  543. says next

  544. in verse 50.

  545. He says,

  546. yet I do not

  547. seek my own

  548. glory.

  549. There is one

  550. who seeks it

  551. and he

  552. is

  553. the judge.

  554. Jesus has

  555. no real

  556. need

  557. to defend

  558. himself.

  559. His father

  560. seeks

  561. his glory

  562. and will

  563. be

  564. the judge.

  565. So he's

  566. communicating here.

  567. This is where

  568. the indictment

  569. language

  570. really

  571. hits.

  572. I think

  573. our minds

  574. might just

  575. bounce right

  576. past this

  577. declaration

  578. that God

  579. is

  580. the judge.

  581. This rejection

  582. of Jesus

  583. as the Christ,

  584. this malicious

  585. name-calling

  586. will be

  587. judged.

  588. And this

  589. audience would

  590. have had a

  591. clear picture

  592. of what Jesus

  593. meant

  594. by this

  595. language.

  596. Perhaps

  597. a text

  598. like Isaiah

    Isaiah 66:15

  599. 66,

  600. verse 15

  601. and 16

  602. would have

  603. come into

  604. their minds.

  605. These men

  606. knew

  607. their Old

  608. Testament

  609. Bible.

  610. Perhaps

  611. this is

  612. what jumped

  613. in their

  614. mind.

  615. He says,

  616. my father

  617. is the

  618. judge.

  619. Listen to

  620. it.

  621. For behold,

  622. the Lord

  623. will come

  624. in fire

  625. and his

  626. chariots

  627. like the

  628. whirlwind

  629. to render

  630. his anger

  631. in fury

  632. and his

  633. rebuke

  634. with flames

  635. of fire.

  636. For by

  637. fire

  638. will the

  639. Lord

  640. enter into

  641. judgment

  642. and by

  643. his sword

  644. with all

  645. flesh

  646. and those

  647. slain by

  648. the Lord

  649. shall be

  650. many.

  651. Jesus

  652. calls

  653. his

  654. father

  655. the

  656. judge.

  657. These

  658. men

  659. are

  660. getting

  661. whipped

  662. into

  663. a

  664. fervor.

  665. This is

  666. indicting

  667. language.

  668. They're

  669. opposing

  670. Jesus

  671. and Jesus

  672. is stating

  673. that they

  674. will be

  675. judged

  676. for their

  677. opposition.

  678. Now,

  679. this

  680. warning is

  681. not just

  682. for them.

  683. Heed

  684. this

  685. warning.

  686. Do not

  687. reject the

  688. claims

  689. of Jesus

  690. Christ.

  691. A warning

  692. like this

  693. isn't

  694. pleasant.

  695. It's not

  696. fun to

  697. talk about

  698. the wrath

  699. of God.

  700. Proper,

  701. just,

  702. but it's

  703. not fun

  704. to talk

  705. about.

  706. But a

  707. warning for

  708. your good

  709. is a

  710. warning that

  711. should be

  712. embraced.

  713. If a

  714. child is

  715. about to

  716. grab the

  717. handle of

  718. a pot of

  719. boiling water

  720. and pull

  721. it down

  722. onto

  723. themselves,

  724. picture that

  725. reaching up,

  726. the handle

  727. got left

  728. sticking out

  729. on the

  730. stove,

  731. and they're

  732. about to

  733. dump boiling

  734. water all

  735. over

  736. themselves,

  737. a loud

  738. or exasperated

  739. warning is

  740. absolutely

  741. appropriate.

  742. Isn't that

  743. what we

  744. would all

  745. do?

  746. It

  747. wouldn't

  748. be calm.

  749. It

  750. wouldn't,

  751. frankly,

  752. be kind

  753. in its

  754. tone.

  755. We would

  756. yell out,

  757. stop,

  758. no,

  759. don't touch

  760. that,

  761. it's not

  762. good for

  763. you.

  764. A harsh

  765. warning when

  766. there is

  767. grave danger

  768. is warranted.

  769. It's

  770. loving.

  771. So listen

  772. to me.

  773. If you

  774. reject Jesus

  775. as the

  776. Christ,

  777. if you do

  778. not flee to

  779. him for the

  780. salvation of

  781. your soul,

  782. you will

  783. stand in the

  784. judgment of

  785. God and

  786. be justly

  787. condemned

  788. for your

  789. sin.

  790. You know

  791. you are

  792. guilty,

  793. and God

  794. certainly

  795. will not

  796. be deceived.

  797. He is

  798. infinitely

  799. offended,

  800. and he

  801. will judge

  802. justly.

  803. We want

  804. God to

  805. be just.

  806. He will

  807. judge

  808. justly.

  809. So embrace

  810. the warning.

  811. understand the

  812. reality of

  813. the state of

  814. your soul

  815. if you're

  816. not in

  817. Christ.

  818. But don't

  819. stop there.

  820. We want to

  821. believe the

  822. promise that

  823. also comes

  824. with this

  825. text.

  826. And so let's

  827. work through

  828. verse 51,

  829. and we're

  830. actually going

  831. to go down

  832. through 58,

  833. and I'm

  834. going to

  835. get into

  836. the eternal

  837. life part

  838. of the

  839. text,

  840. because it's

  841. here in

  842. verse 51

  843. that the

  844. offer is

  845. made.

  846. He says,

  847. truly,

  848. truly,

  849. really,

  850. really,

  851. this is a

  852. true thing

  853. you should

  854. listen to.

  855. I say to

  856. you,

  857. if anyone

  858. keeps my

  859. word,

  860. he will

  861. never see

  862. death.

  863. Right?

  864. This is on

  865. the heels

  866. of this

  867. God as

  868. judge

  869. language.

  870. But look

  871. at their

  872. response.

  873. The Jews

  874. said to

  875. him,

  876. now we

  877. know that

  878. you have

  879. a demon.

  880. Abraham

  881. died,

  882. as did

  883. the

  884. prophets,

  885. if anyone's

  886. not going

  887. to die,

  888. it'd be

  889. them,

  890. but they

  891. died,

  892. yet you

  893. say,

  894. if anyone

  895. keeps my

  896. word,

  897. he will

  898. never

  899. taste

  900. death.

  901. I spent

  902. too much

  903. time this

  904. week trying

  905. to figure

  906. out why

  907. Jesus says

  908. never see

  909. death,

  910. and they

  911. say never

  912. taste

  913. death,

  914. thinking

  915. there'd

  916. be

  917. something

  918. amazing

  919. there.

  920. Nope.

  921. These

  922. are both

  923. common

  924. phrases used

  925. all throughout

  926. the scripture

  927. to speak

  928. about

  929. experiencing

  930. death.

  931. Why

  932. different

  933. phrases?

  934. I don't

  935. know.

  936. I don't

  937. know.

  938. Maybe they

  939. weren't

  940. listening as

  941. well as

  942. they should

  943. have.

  944. Maybe this

  945. is to the

  946. half-listening

  947. point.

  948. They couldn't

  949. even repeat

  950. what he

  951. said properly.

  952. Perhaps.

  953. That's my

  954. imagination.

  955. Verse 53,

  956. are you

  957. greater than

  958. our father

  959. Abraham who

  960. died and

  961. the prophets

  962. died?

  963. Who do

  964. you make

  965. yourself out

  966. to be?

  967. You hear

  968. that dripping

  969. condemnation in

  970. that question.

  971. Who do you

  972. think you

  973. are?

  974. Jesus

  975. answers them,

  976. if I glorify

  977. myself, my

  978. glory is

  979. nothing.

  980. You hear

  981. what he's

  982. saying.

  983. He's responding

  984. humbly.

  985. God.

  986. He is

  987. God.

  988. He in this

  989. moment can

  990. call down

  991. heaven,

  992. condemn them

  993. immediately in

  994. the moment.

  995. He says,

  996. if I glorify

  997. myself, my

  998. glory is

  999. nothing.

  1000. It is my

  1001. father who

  1002. glorifies me

  1003. of whom you

  1004. say he

  1005. is our

  1006. God.

  1007. But you

  1008. have not

  1009. known him.

  1010. But you

  1011. have not

  1012. known him.

  1013. These men's

  1014. lives were

  1015. devoted to

  1016. the worship

  1017. of Yahweh.

  1018. And Jesus

  1019. says, he is

  1020. not your

  1021. God.

  1022. You say

  1023. he is, but

  1024. he is

  1025. not.

  1026. And he

  1027. says, I

  1028. know him.

  1029. If I

  1030. were to

  1031. say that I

  1032. do not

  1033. know him,

  1034. I would

  1035. be a

  1036. liar like

  1037. you.

  1038. But I

  1039. do know

  1040. him, and

  1041. I keep

  1042. his word.

  1043. Your

  1044. father

  1045. Abraham

  1046. rejoiced

  1047. that he

  1048. would see

  1049. my day.

  1050. He saw

  1051. it and

  1052. was

  1053. glad.

  1054. Now, once

  1055. again, here's

  1056. a verse to

  1057. think about.

  1058. what does

  1059. this mean?

  1060. And really, I

  1061. don't know that

  1062. we can derive

  1063. exactly what

  1064. is meant

  1065. here.

  1066. What does

  1067. it mean that

  1068. Abraham saw

  1069. Jesus' might

  1070. be meant

  1071. by this?

  1072. But clearly,

  1073. what Jesus is

  1074. expressing is

  1075. that Abraham

  1076. understands

  1077. Jesus is

  1078. the Christ.

  1079. He gets

  1080. this.

  1081. perhaps in

  1082. some glorified

  1083. state.

  1084. Perhaps he

  1085. has some

  1086. theophany that

  1087. we're not

  1088. aware of.

  1089. Perhaps we

  1090. got to be

  1091. better at our

  1092. biblical theology

  1093. and understand

  1094. how he beheld

  1095. Christ and

  1096. the promises.

  1097. I'm not

  1098. sure.

  1099. But nonetheless,

  1100. Abraham

  1101. rejoiced

  1102. to see the

  1103. day of

  1104. Christ.

  1105. We read

  1106. previously from

  1107. Hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  1108. 11,

  1109. expressed that

  1110. Abraham was

  1111. looking forward

  1112. to a city

  1113. with foundations.

  1114. He saw it

  1115. and he was

  1116. glad.

  1117. And once again,

  1118. this just feels

  1119. like such a

  1120. moment where

  1121. they ought to

  1122. go, what do

  1123. you mean?

  1124. What are you

  1125. talking about?

  1126. Abraham, our

  1127. father, rejoiced

  1128. to see your day?

  1129. He saw it?

  1130. Like, tell us

  1131. more.

  1132. And that we

  1133. would get this

  1134. beautiful explanation

  1135. of how it was

  1136. that Abraham

  1137. saw the day

  1138. of Christ,

  1139. but they

  1140. respond instead,

  1141. you are not

  1142. yet 50 years

  1143. old.

  1144. And have you

  1145. seen Abraham?

  1146. You're not

  1147. old enough

  1148. to have seen

  1149. Abraham or

  1150. him to

  1151. see you.

  1152. And Jesus

  1153. says to them,

  1154. truly, truly,

  1155. I say to you

  1156. again, really,

  1157. really true,

  1158. before Abraham

  1159. was,

  1160. I

  1161. am.

  1162. This is a

  1163. significant

  1164. statement.

  1165. He could

  1166. have said,

  1167. grammatically he

  1168. could have

  1169. said,

  1170. before Abraham

  1171. was, I

  1172. was.

  1173. I predate

  1174. Abraham.

  1175. Isn't that

  1176. kind of a

  1177. question?

  1178. You're not

  1179. that old.

  1180. How is it

  1181. possible?

  1182. Jesus flips

  1183. the question

  1184. on its head

  1185. to say

  1186. something much

  1187. more significant

  1188. about himself.

  1189. Now, in the

  1190. book of John,

  1191. there are seven

  1192. metaphorical I

  1193. am's.

  1194. I am the

  1195. bread of

  1196. life, as

  1197. an example

  1198. from a

  1199. previous

  1200. chapter.

  1201. This one

  1202. is not a

  1203. metaphorical I

  1204. am.

  1205. This is

  1206. Jesus accessing

  1207. the language

  1208. of Exodus

    Exodus 3 chapter mention

  1209. chapter 3

  1210. and verse 14.

  1211. When Moses

  1212. meets with

  1213. God on the

  1214. mountain,

  1215. he's commissioned

  1216. to go lead

  1217. God's people

  1218. out of

  1219. captivity,

  1220. and he

  1221. asks,

  1222. who should

  1223. I tell

  1224. them sent

  1225. me?

  1226. God

  1227. says,

  1228. tell them

  1229. I am

  1230. has sent

  1231. you.

  1232. Right?

  1233. This is the

  1234. Hebrew word

  1235. Yahweh.

  1236. The self-existent

  1237. one.

  1238. Jesus'

  1239. listeners

  1240. would have

  1241. entirely

  1242. understood

  1243. what he

  1244. was communicating

  1245. to them

  1246. when he

  1247. says,

  1248. before Abraham

  1249. was,

  1250. I'm going

  1251. to say

  1252. something

  1253. grammatically

  1254. clunky,

  1255. before Abraham

  1256. was,

  1257. I am.

  1258. And we

  1259. know this

  1260. is true

  1261. because they

  1262. picked up

  1263. stones.

  1264. this was

  1265. the ultimate

  1266. blasphemy

  1267. in their

  1268. eyes.

  1269. And it

  1270. would be

  1271. if Jesus

  1272. is not

  1273. in fact

  1274. the eternal

  1275. God.

  1276. So that's

  1277. point one.

  1278. Point two.

  1279. Jesus offers

  1280. eternal life

  1281. in himself.

  1282. In himself.

  1283. Verse 51.

  1284. Truly,

  1285. truly,

  1286. I say to

  1287. you,

  1288. if anyone

  1289. keeps my

  1290. word,

  1291. he will

  1292. never see

  1293. death.

  1294. Now,

  1295. if Jesus

  1296. is not

  1297. God,

  1298. these words

  1299. are absurd.

  1300. This is

  1301. crazy talk.

  1302. If he

  1303. is God,

  1304. and he

  1305. is,

  1306. then they're

  1307. everything.

  1308. John Piper

  1309. brought to my

  1310. attention a

  1311. book written

  1312. in the early

  1313. 70s.

  1314. I've not

  1315. read it.

  1316. By a man

  1317. named

  1318. Ernest

  1319. Becker.

  1320. It won

  1321. the Pulitzer

  1322. Prize in

  1323. 1974.

  1324. The book

  1325. was entitled

  1326. The Denial

  1327. of Death.

  1328. in which

  1329. he argues,

  1330. this is the

  1331. thesis statement,

  1332. the idea

  1333. of death,

  1334. the fear

  1335. of it,

  1336. haunts the

  1337. human animal

  1338. like nothing

  1339. else.

  1340. It is a

  1341. mainspring

  1342. of human

  1343. activity.

  1344. Activity

  1345. designed largely

  1346. to avoid

  1347. the fatality

  1348. of death,

  1349. to overcome

  1350. it by denying

  1351. in some way

  1352. that it is

  1353. the final

  1354. destiny

  1355. for man.

  1356. His argument

  1357. is that all

  1358. human activity

  1359. is fueled

  1360. by,

  1361. it's the

  1362. mainspring

  1363. of a fear

  1364. of death.

  1365. Interesting

  1366. thing to

  1367. think about.

  1368. We see this

  1369. reality expressed

  1370. whether consciously

  1371. or unconsciously

  1372. in all kinds

  1373. of forms.

  1374. Some good

  1375. things,

  1376. some that

  1377. aren't so

  1378. good.

  1379. We do lots

  1380. of life

  1381. preserving

  1382. things,

  1383. don't we?

  1384. I will

  1385. certainly

  1386. put my

  1387. seatbelt

  1388. on and

  1389. drive

  1390. carefully

  1391. when I

  1392. go home

  1393. at the

  1394. end of

  1395. today.

  1396. I hope

  1397. that's not

  1398. feared by

  1399. fear of

  1400. death,

  1401. but perhaps

  1402. it is

  1403. somewhere

  1404. down

  1405. inside.

  1406. Our

  1407. culture

  1408. has an

  1409. obsession

  1410. with youth.

  1411. It suggests

  1412. that we

  1413. worship

  1414. youth,

  1415. all kinds

  1416. of health

  1417. crazes,

  1418. diet fads,

  1419. cosmetic

  1420. surgery,

  1421. idolatry

  1422. of

  1423. celebrities.

  1424. Think about

  1425. the kinds

  1426. of celebrities

  1427. that are

  1428. worshipped.

  1429. They're so

  1430. young.

  1431. Even the

  1432. young people

  1433. in our

  1434. church are

  1435. becoming

  1436. older than

  1437. the people

  1438. who are

  1439. worshipped

  1440. these days.

  1441. The drowning

  1442. and medicating

  1443. of sorrow,

  1444. the seize

  1445. the day

  1446. mantra

  1447. that's so

  1448. prevalent,

  1449. the way we

  1450. spend our

  1451. leisure

  1452. activity,

  1453. the numbing

  1454. of entertainment,

  1455. the gathering

  1456. up of

  1457. toys.

  1458. Most of

  1459. you know

  1460. right now

  1461. my family

  1462. is living

  1463. in Buford

  1464. on Linear

  1465. Islands Parkway

  1466. and I

  1467. just watch

  1468. men

  1469. pushing

  1470. back

  1471. age

  1472. go up

  1473. and down

  1474. the road

  1475. in big

  1476. dumb

  1477. lifted

  1478. trucks

  1479. and boats.

  1480. It is

  1481. just

  1482. sad.

  1483. Sad

  1484. the way

  1485. time and

  1486. energy is

  1487. being spent

  1488. and I

  1489. think there's

  1490. something to

  1491. this

  1492. underneath

  1493. that.

  1494. We want

  1495. to feel

  1496. young.

  1497. We want

  1498. to feel

  1499. like death

  1500. is not

  1501. impending.

  1502. But despite

  1503. all the

  1504. efforts to

  1505. extend our

  1506. life or

  1507. ignore

  1508. death

  1509. coming,

  1510. you and

  1511. I will

  1512. die bodily

  1513. deaths.

  1514. It's inevitable

  1515. and unavoidable.

  1516. It's going

  1517. to happen.

  1518. One of the

  1519. great benefits

  1520. of old church

  1521. properties was

  1522. that when you

  1523. pulled on the

  1524. property,

  1525. you had to

  1526. think about

  1527. eternity

  1528. because there

  1529. was a

  1530. graveyard

  1531. staring at

  1532. you as

  1533. you came

  1534. in.

  1535. Maybe as

  1536. we age,

  1537. we should

  1538. start one.

  1539. So is

  1540. Becker right?

  1541. Does the

  1542. idea of

  1543. death,

  1544. the fear

  1545. of it,

  1546. haunt the

  1547. human animal

  1548. like nothing

  1549. else?

  1550. Becker,

  1551. to my

  1552. understanding,

  1553. not a

  1554. Christian,

  1555. and his

  1556. book offers

  1557. no solutions,

  1558. just observations,

  1559. but is he

  1560. right?

  1561. the author

  1562. of Hebrews

  1563. certainly

  1564. thinks so.

  1565. Wrote this

  1566. way before

  1567. Becker was

  1568. around.

  1569. Hebrews

    Hebrews 2:14

  1570. chapter 2,

  1571. verse 14

  1572. and 15,

  1573. listen to

  1574. this,

  1575. since therefore

  1576. the children

  1577. share in

  1578. flesh and

  1579. blood,

  1580. he himself,

  1581. Christ,

  1582. likewise,

  1583. partook of

  1584. the same

  1585. things,

  1586. that through

  1587. death he

  1588. might destroy

  1589. the one who

  1590. has the

  1591. power of

  1592. death,

  1593. that is,

  1594. the devil,

  1595. right?

  1596. So Jesus,

  1597. incarnate,

  1598. became alive

  1599. so that he

  1600. could die,

  1601. and destroy

  1602. the one who

  1603. has the

  1604. power of

  1605. death,

  1606. that is,

  1607. the devil,

  1608. verse 15,

  1609. and deliver

  1610. all those

  1611. who through

  1612. fear of

  1613. death were

  1614. subject to

  1615. lifelong

  1616. slavery.

  1617. Deliver from

  1618. death those

  1619. who through

  1620. fear of

  1621. death were

  1622. subject to

  1623. lifelong

  1624. slavery.

  1625. Certainly,

  1626. Becker agrees

  1627. with the

  1628. author of

  1629. Hebrews.

  1630. death.

  1631. The fear

  1632. of death

  1633. controls

  1634. those who

  1635. have reason

  1636. to fear

  1637. death.

  1638. Let's go

  1639. back to the

  1640. promise offered

  1641. in verse 51.

  1642. Truly,

  1643. truly,

  1644. I say to

  1645. you,

  1646. if anyone

  1647. keeps my

  1648. word,

  1649. he will

  1650. never see

  1651. death.

  1652. Now,

  1653. we're obviously

  1654. not talking

  1655. about a

  1656. physical death

  1657. here.

  1658. We are

  1659. talking about

  1660. spiritual

  1661. death.

  1662. death.

  1663. Here,

  1664. stated in the

  1665. negative,

  1666. we'll never

  1667. see death,

  1668. is the

  1669. offer of

  1670. eternal

  1671. life.

  1672. If we're

  1673. never going

  1674. to see

  1675. death,

  1676. then we're

  1677. going to

  1678. have life

  1679. forever.

  1680. This is a

  1681. theme developed

  1682. in the

  1683. teaching of

  1684. Jesus and

  1685. highlighted all

  1686. throughout

  1687. John's

  1688. gospel.

  1689. Let me

  1690. show you a

  1691. couple of

  1692. places

  1693. quickly to

  1694. round out

  1695. this offering

  1696. being made

  1697. to us

  1698. here.

  1699. Let's

  1700. start with

  1701. the stated

  1702. purpose of

  1703. John's

  1704. writing.

  1705. Turn with

  1706. me to

  1707. John

    John 20 chapter mention

  1708. chapter

  1709. 20.

  1710. I'll

  1711. read

  1712. verse

  1713. 30

  1714. and

  1715. 31.

  1716. John

  1717. says,

  1718. Now Jesus

  1719. did many

  1720. other signs

  1721. in the

  1722. presence

  1723. of the

  1724. disciples

  1725. which are

  1726. not

  1727. written

  1728. in this

  1729. book.

  1730. Jesus

  1731. did lots

  1732. of things.

  1733. He says,

  1734. But these

  1735. are written

  1736. so that you

  1737. may believe

  1738. that Jesus

  1739. is the

  1740. Christ,

  1741. the Son

  1742. of God,

  1743. and that

  1744. by believing

  1745. you may

  1746. have life

  1747. in His

  1748. name.

  1749. The total

  1750. purpose of

  1751. the book.

  1752. So here's

  1753. this theme.

  1754. It's

  1755. continuing to

  1756. work itself

  1757. out to

  1758. the very

  1759. end of

  1760. John's

  1761. writing.

  1762. John

    John 11 chapter mention

  1763. chapter 11.

  1764. Turn back

  1765. a couple

  1766. pages to

  1767. verse 25.

  1768. Here Jesus

  1769. is speaking

  1770. to Martha

  1771. whose brother

  1772. Lazarus is

  1773. at the time

  1774. of speaking

  1775. to her

  1776. presently

  1777. dead

  1778. and

  1779. entombed.

  1780. And there

  1781. Jesus says,

  1782. John 11

    John 11:25

  1783. verse 25,

  1784. I am

  1785. the resurrection

  1786. and the

  1787. life.

  1788. Whoever

  1789. believes in

  1790. me,

  1791. though he

  1792. die,

  1793. yet shall

  1794. he live.

  1795. And everyone

  1796. who lives

  1797. and believes

  1798. in me

  1799. shall never

  1800. die.

  1801. You see the

  1802. way he's

  1803. using this

  1804. language?

  1805. The physical

  1806. death and

  1807. the metaphorical

  1808. death or

  1809. the spiritual

  1810. death.

  1811. Do you

  1812. believe this?

  1813. He asked

  1814. Martha.

  1815. And John

    John 17:3

  1816. 17,

  1817. verse 3.

  1818. This is the

  1819. high priestly

  1820. prayer.

  1821. Jesus prays,

  1822. and this

  1823. is eternal

  1824. life.

  1825. Oh,

  1826. tell me.

  1827. Tell me

  1828. more.

  1829. Mansions and

  1830. gold streets

  1831. and sea of

  1832. glad,

  1833. these things.

  1834. No.

  1835. Somebody

  1836. says,

  1837. that they

  1838. know

  1839. you,

  1840. the only

  1841. true God

  1842. and Jesus

  1843. Christ,

  1844. whom you

  1845. have sent.

  1846. Eternal

  1847. life is not

  1848. just about

  1849. duration,

  1850. it will go

  1851. on forever,

  1852. but it is

  1853. about a

  1854. relationship.

  1855. It's about

  1856. being restored

  1857. to our

  1858. creator,

  1859. God.

  1860. Knowing him

  1861. and being

  1862. known by

  1863. him now

  1864. and forever

  1865. more.

  1866. So don't

  1867. miss that.

  1868. If you're not

  1869. found in

  1870. Christ this

  1871. morning,

  1872. you're living

  1873. in a state

  1874. of death,

  1875. if you

  1876. don't repent

  1877. and believe

  1878. in Christ,

  1879. that will

  1880. be an

  1881. eternal

  1882. death,

  1883. cut off

  1884. from God

  1885. for forever.

  1886. But if you

  1887. are in

  1888. Christ this

  1889. morning,

  1890. how encouraging

  1891. we have

  1892. life now,

  1893. spiritual

  1894. life now,

  1895. and we'll

  1896. have that

  1897. life now

  1898. and

  1899. forevermore.

  1900. How great.

  1901. How great.

  1902. If anyone

  1903. keeps my

  1904. word,

  1905. he will

  1906. never

  1907. see death.

  1908. They accuse

  1909. him,

  1910. he offers

  1911. life.

  1912. They

  1913. dishonor

  1914. him,

  1915. he speaks

  1916. words,

  1917. salvation.

  1918. Paul says

  1919. in Romans

  1920. 5, 8,

  1921. God shows

  1922. his love

  1923. for us

  1924. in that

  1925. while we

  1926. were still

  1927. sinners,

  1928. Christ

  1929. died

  1930. for us.

  1931. So if we

  1932. want to

  1933. receive this

  1934. offer of

  1935. eternal life,

  1936. what must

  1937. we do?

  1938. Jesus

  1939. says,

  1940. if anyone

  1941. keeps my

  1942. word,

  1943. he will

  1944. never

  1945. see

  1946. death.

  1947. One could

  1948. easily think

  1949. that Jesus

  1950. means that

  1951. we,

  1952. by our

  1953. own

  1954. effort,

  1955. must obey

  1956. everything that

  1957. the Bible

  1958. commands,

  1959. that we

  1960. must earn

  1961. this offer

  1962. of eternal

  1963. life,

  1964. but this

  1965. is not

  1966. so.

  1967. That was the

  1968. danger of

  1969. breaking text

  1970. down to

  1971. tiny little

  1972. things.

  1973. You could

  1974. just take

  1975. this single

  1976. verse and

  1977. think,

  1978. okay,

  1979. I've got to

  1980. obey everything

  1981. Jesus said

  1982. and that's

  1983. how it

  1984. is,

  1985. that I'll

  1986. have

  1987. eternal

  1988. life,

  1989. but we

  1990. want to

  1991. be students

  1992. of the

  1993. whole

  1994. Bible.

  1995. And you

  1996. don't even

  1997. have to

  1998. do that,

  1999. you could

  2000. just be a

  2001. student of

  2002. the book

  2003. of John.

  2004. John does

  2005. not allow us

  2006. to misunderstand

  2007. what is being

  2008. said here.

  2009. I read a

  2010. couple of

  2011. texts to you

  2012. already that

  2013. talked about

  2014. belief,

  2015. right,

  2016. that we would

  2017. believe that

  2018. Jesus is the

  2019. Christ,

  2020. and that by

  2021. believing we

  2022. may have

  2023. life in

  2024. his name.

  2025. That's

  2026. John 20

  2027. and verse

  2028. 31.

  2029. John 11

    John 11:25

  2030. verse 25,

  2031. I am the

  2032. resurrection

  2033. of life.

  2034. Whoever

  2035. believes in

  2036. me,

  2037. though he

  2038. die,

  2039. yet shall

  2040. he live.

  2041. And whoever

  2042. lives and

  2043. believes in

  2044. me shall

  2045. never die.

  2046. John chapter

    John 1:12

  2047. 1 verse 12

  2048. and 13,

  2049. but to all

  2050. who did

  2051. receive him,

  2052. who believed

  2053. in his name,

  2054. he gave the

  2055. right to

  2056. become children

  2057. of God,

  2058. who were

  2059. born,

  2060. not of

  2061. blood,

  2062. nor the

  2063. will of

  2064. the flesh,

  2065. nor the

  2066. will of

  2067. man,

  2068. but of

  2069. God.

  2070. John 3

  2071. and verse 36,

  2072. whoever believes

  2073. in the Son

  2074. has eternal

  2075. life.

  2076. Whoever does

  2077. not obey

  2078. the Son

  2079. shall not

  2080. see life,

  2081. but the wrath

  2082. of God

  2083. remains on

  2084. him.

  2085. And I

  2086. think John

  2087. 3,

  2088. 36 makes

  2089. it most

  2090. clear that

  2091. the obedience

  2092. being talked

  2093. about in

  2094. our text

  2095. is to

  2096. believe

  2097. in the

  2098. Son,

  2099. to believe

  2100. that the

  2101. promises

  2102. he made,

  2103. the things

  2104. he said

  2105. about himself

  2106. and the

  2107. things he

  2108. said would

  2109. accomplish

  2110. are in

  2111. fact

  2112. true.

  2113. Becker

  2114. may not

  2115. offer us

  2116. any solution

  2117. to the

  2118. problem of

  2119. death,

  2120. but Jesus

  2121. certainly

  2122. does.

  2123. Jesus,

  2124. God

  2125. himself,

  2126. became

  2127. a man,

  2128. put on

  2129. human flesh,

  2130. flesh,

  2131. we call

  2132. this the

  2133. incarnation,

  2134. dwelt

  2135. both as

  2136. God and

  2137. man,

  2138. fully at

  2139. the same

  2140. time.

  2141. If you

  2142. want to

  2143. pocket up

  2144. a great

  2145. theological

  2146. term,

  2147. this is

  2148. called the

  2149. hypostatic

  2150. union,

  2151. God and

  2152. man at

  2153. the same

  2154. time,

  2155. so that

  2156. he could

  2157. live a

  2158. perfect

  2159. life,

  2160. never without

  2161. any sin.

  2162. he fulfilled

  2163. all the

  2164. requirements of

  2165. the law,

  2166. all of the

  2167. things that

  2168. are expected

  2169. of us,

  2170. if we're to

  2171. be found

  2172. perfect before

  2173. God,

  2174. an undestroyed

  2175. relationship

  2176. before God,

  2177. he accomplished

  2178. it.

  2179. Perfect

  2180. life.

  2181. But not

  2182. only that,

  2183. he died

  2184. a sacrificial

  2185. death,

  2186. a death that

  2187. he did not

  2188. deserve,

  2189. he had

  2190. committed

  2191. no sin,

  2192. and yet,

  2193. for all who

  2194. believe in

  2195. him,

  2196. he took

  2197. on

  2198. their sin

  2199. on the

  2200. cross.

  2201. God poured

  2202. out his

  2203. wrath

  2204. for us

  2205. onto

  2206. him.

  2207. This is

  2208. why at

  2209. the end,

  2210. verse 59,

  2211. we see them

  2212. picking up

  2213. stones to

  2214. throw at

  2215. him.

  2216. Jesus is

  2217. not being

  2218. cowardly

  2219. at this

  2220. point.

  2221. Oh no,

  2222. I better

  2223. avoid the

  2224. stone

  2225. throwing.

  2226. He hides

  2227. himself and

  2228. goes out

  2229. of the

  2230. temple because

  2231. that was

  2232. not how

  2233. he was

  2234. meant to

  2235. die.

  2236. He knew

  2237. this,

  2238. he knew

  2239. there was

  2240. a divine

  2241. timeline,

  2242. it wasn't

  2243. time yet,

  2244. and so

  2245. he avoids

  2246. being stoned

  2247. to death.

  2248. Why?

  2249. So that he

  2250. would be

  2251. lifted up

  2252. on a

  2253. cross.

  2254. So,

  2255. we have

  2256. Jesus'

  2257. perfect life

  2258. and his

  2259. sacrificial

  2260. death,

  2261. so that

  2262. by faith,

  2263. by believing

  2264. he is who

  2265. he says

  2266. he is,

  2267. and he

  2268. accomplished

  2269. what he

  2270. said he

  2271. accomplished,

  2272. his

  2273. righteousness,

  2274. his

  2275. perfect

  2276. law-keeping

  2277. would be

  2278. given to

  2279. us,

  2280. and our

  2281. sin would

  2282. be given

  2283. to him.

  2284. Those two

  2285. things,

  2286. double

  2287. imputation,

  2288. get a

  2289. bonus

  2290. theological

  2291. phrase to

  2292. put in

  2293. your pocket,

  2294. the great

  2295. exchange.

  2296. But it

  2297. doesn't stop

  2298. there.

  2299. It would

  2300. be really

  2301. tragic if it

  2302. stopped there,

  2303. in fact you

  2304. shouldn't

  2305. believe it if

  2306. it stops

  2307. there,

  2308. because the

  2309. next step,

  2310. Jesus'

  2311. solution for

  2312. the problem

  2313. of death,

  2314. is that he

  2315. was raised.

  2316. He defeats

  2317. death.

  2318. He declares

  2319. victory over

  2320. death,

  2321. because he

  2322. is alive,

  2323. that we

  2324. might have

  2325. life in

  2326. him.

  2327. Righteousness

  2328. is given

  2329. to us,

  2330. sacrificial

  2331. death on

  2332. our behalf,

  2333. he is raised,

  2334. he is alive,

  2335. and he's

  2336. ascended,

  2337. he's gone to

  2338. the Father,

  2339. and he's

  2340. seated at his

  2341. right hand,

  2342. and he

  2343. intercedes for

  2344. us,

  2345. and he's

  2346. sent to

  2347. us a

  2348. helper.

  2349. He has

  2350. given to

  2351. us the

  2352. church,

  2353. he works

  2354. mightily

  2355. through

  2356. his

  2357. people,

  2358. even

  2359. now on

  2360. your

  2361. behalf.

  2362. Like,

  2363. how does

  2364. this text

  2365. connect to

  2366. us today?

  2367. Is that

  2368. Jesus did

  2369. all of

  2370. this,

  2371. and is

  2372. now still

  2373. doing it?

  2374. Seated at

  2375. the right

  2376. hand,

  2377. building his

  2378. church,

  2379. none of

  2380. you are

  2381. here by

  2382. accident.

  2383. If you

  2384. found

  2385. yourself

  2386. sitting

  2387. here,

  2388. listening

  2389. to me,

  2390. at all,

  2391. it's

  2392. because God

  2393. has

  2394. intentions

  2395. for your

  2396. life.

  2397. Don't

  2398. reject

  2399. Jesus as

  2400. the

  2401. Christ.

  2402. 8,

  2403. verse

  2404. 48-49

  2405. shows us

  2406. something

  2407. deeply

  2408. sobering

  2409. and

  2410. deeply

  2411. hopeful.

  2412. The

  2413. eternal

  2414. son of

  2415. God

  2416. stood

  2417. before

  2418. men

  2419. and

  2420. they

  2421. called

  2422. him

  2423. a

  2424. demon.

  2425. And

  2426. yet,

  2427. that

  2428. same

  2429. son

  2430. would

  2431. go to

  2432. the

  2433. cross.

  2434. He

  2435. would

  2436. be

  2437. mocked,

  2438. beaten,

  2439. crucified.

  2440. Not

  2441. because he

  2442. deserved it,

  2443. but because

  2444. we did.

  2445. He was

  2446. dishonored so

  2447. that we

  2448. might be

  2449. forgiven.

  2450. He was

  2451. rejected so

  2452. that we

  2453. might be

  2454. received.

  2455. He died

  2456. so that

  2457. we might

  2458. live.

  2459. So the

  2460. question is

  2461. not merely

  2462. what

  2463. happened

  2464. then.

  2465. The

  2466. question is

  2467. for us

  2468. now.

  2469. What

  2470. will you

  2471. do

  2472. with

  2473. Jesus?

  2474. Because

  2475. his promise

  2476. still

  2477. stands.

  2478. Truly,

  2479. truly,

  2480. I say

  2481. to you,

  2482. if

  2483. anyone

  2484. keeps

  2485. my

  2486. word,

  2487. he

  2488. will

  2489. never

  2490. see

  2491. death.

  2492. Let's

  2493. pray

  2494. together.

  2495. Let's

  2496. pray

  2497. together.
