  1. Good morning, everybody.

  2. Hope you all are well.

  3. Thankful that you are here.

  4. Go ahead.

  5. Grab your copy of God's Word.

  6. This morning we are going to primarily be looking at Philippians chapter 1 verses 27 and 28.

    Philippians 1:27

  7. So the city of Philippi itself, it gets its name from Philip of Macedonia,

  8. who some of you may know as the father of Alexander the Great,

  9. who is a very famous historical figure.

  10. The city itself gained notoriety in the ancient world

  11. because of a famous battle that was fought there in 42 B.C.

  12. when the armies of Antony and Octavian defeated the armies of Brutus and Cassius at the Battle of Philippi.

  13. This battle is significant because after this, the age of the Roman Republic was ended

  14. and from there began the age of the Roman Empire.

  15. After the battle, Philippi became a Roman colony,

  16. which at the time was incredibly significant

  17. because it came with many of the same benefits of being a Roman from Italy,

  18. including Roman citizenship,

  19. which is something that we'll kind of touch on here in a minute,

  20. but at the time would have been a very big deal.

  21. So from there,

  22. we can also see the story of the beginning of the Church of Philippi,

  23. which I think is beneficial for our time this morning in Acts chapter 16.

    Acts 16 chapter mention

  24. If you want to turn to Acts chapter 16, go ahead.

    Acts 16 chapter mention

  25. I'm not going to read it verbatim,

  26. but I'm just going to kind of paraphrase it for the sake of time this morning.

  27. So in Acts chapter 16,

    Acts 16 chapter mention

  28. you find the Apostle Paul seeking to go to Asia to preach the gospel,

  29. but the scripture tells us that the spirit of Jesus did not allow them to go.

  30. So from there, he ends up in the city of Troas,

  31. where in the night he receives his Macedonian call,

  32. which was a vision that he had of a man from Macedonia

  33. urging him to come to Macedonia to help him.

  34. So Paul has this vision and concludes that God has called him to preach the gospel there.

  35. So he immediately goes there in obedience to the Lord.

  36. From the beginning in Acts chapter 16,

    Acts 16 chapter mention

  37. we can see how God built his church in Philippi in ways that only which God can do.

  38. So the first person that we see converted in Philippi is Lydia,

  39. who we are told is a seller of purple goods.

  40. So in Philippi, there were not enough Jews there to constitute a synagogue.

  41. So Paul finds himself down by the river,

  42. rolling up on essentially a women's Bible study,

  43. a prayer meeting.

  44. And this is where we meet Lydia, right?

  45. The Bible tells us that she was a worshiper of God.

  46. And upon hearing Paul's message,

  47. we are told that she becomes a believer and is baptized,

  48. as well as that of her whole household.

  49. From there, Paul spends some time in Philippi.

  50. And the next character that we meet is a slave girl,

  51. who we are told is demon-possessed and has a spirit of divination.

  52. This spirit of divination gives her this ability that brought her masters much gain.

  53. She followed Paul and his companions around the city,

  54. proclaiming,

  55. These men are servants of the Most High God,

  56. who proclaim to you the way of salvation.

  57. So she did this for long enough that,

  58. this cracks me up,

  59. it says,

  60. Paul was greatly annoyed.

  61. So he commands the spirit to leave her in the name of Christ,

  62. to which the spirit does.

  63. But after this happened,

  64. this now creates a problem for the slave girl's masters,

  65. because they now have no way to make money from this.

  66. So they get angry.

  67. They seize Paul and Silas,

  68. and they bring him before the magistrates,

  69. accusing them of doing things that are not lawful.

  70. So the magistrates and the people there,

  71. they attack Paul,

  72. they rip his clothes off,

  73. they beat him with rods,

  74. and then they throw him into prison.

  75. And there we meet our next convert of the Philippian church,

  76. the Philippian jailer.

  77. So the Philippian jailer,

  78. he did not simply just follow the orders that he was given to keep them in the prison,

  79. but he throws them into the inner prison and fastens their feet in stocks.

  80. This would have been something incredibly painful,

  81. incredibly uncomfortable.

  82. And that night,

  83. Paul and Silas are praying and singing hymns in prison,

  84. which is cool enough as it is.

  85. But they're singing and they're praying,

  86. and there's a great earthquake.

  87. And this earthquake,

  88. it is to the magnitude that it causes all of the doors in the prison to open.

  89. It causes all of the stocks to become unfastened.

  90. So the jailer wakes up,

  91. and he sees what has happened.

  92. He sees all the doors of the prison open

  93. and assumes that the prisoners have escaped.

  94. Now,

  95. at that time,

  96. the jailer was responsible for ensuring that this did not happen,

  97. and often the punishment for failure in his duty would have been death.

  98. So the jailer,

  99. he grabs his sword.

  100. He's about to go ahead and end his life then and there.

  101. But Paul,

  102. seeing this about to happen,

  103. in verse 28,

  104. he cries out to the jailer.

  105. He says,

  106. Do not harm yourself.

  107. We are all here.

  108. The jailer,

  109. his response to this is,

  110. he falls down before Paul and Silas in fear

  111. and says,

  112. What must I do to be saved?

  113. From there,

  114. they share the gospel with him,

  115. and the jailer,

  116. along with his entire household,

  117. are saved and baptized.

  118. So that's the beginning of the Philippian church.

  119. These are the cast of characters

  120. that we see in Acts chapter 16.

    Acts 16 chapter mention

  121. You have Lydia,

  122. the wealthy seller of purple goods,

  123. the formerly demon-possessed slave girl,

  124. and the overzealous Philippian jailer.

  125. And so these are the people that,

  126. along with others,

  127. that Paul is writing this letter of Philippians to.

  128. Only God can bring these people together.

  129. All right.

  130. Now we'll get into Philippians.

    Philippians 1:27

  131. Chapter 1,

  132. verses 27 and 28.

  133. It says,

  134. Only let your manner of life

  135. be worthy of the gospel of Christ,

  136. so that whether I come and see you or am absent,

  137. I may hear of you

  138. that you are standing firm in one spirit,

  139. with one mind striving side by side

  140. for the faith of the gospel,

  141. and not frightened in anything by your opponents.

  142. This is a clear sign to them of their destruction,

  143. but of your salvation,

  144. and that from God.

  145. So the first thing that I want to take a look at

  146. is verse 27a.

  147. And in this,

  148. we have a command from Paul

  149. that he gives the Philippian church

  150. in extension to us

  151. about how we are called to live.

  152. He says,

  153. Only let your manner of life

  154. be worthy of the gospel of Christ.

  155. So there's a couple things in this text

  156. that I think is really important to define

  157. to understand what Paul is saying.

  158. Some of you in your Bible,

  159. you may have a footnote

  160. after the phrase manner of life,

  161. right?

  162. And it says,

  163. Only behave as citizens worthy.

  164. So the Greek word here for manner of life,

  165. forgive me for this,

  166. I'm from Hog Mountain.

  167. The Greek word here is

  168. Pauli,

  169. Paulit,

  170. you,

  171. you,

  172. me,

  173. again,

  174. from Hog Mountain,

  175. which the word is the same root word

  176. that we get our word politics from.

  177. We see the same word in Philippians 3.20

  178. where Paul says,

  179. But our citizenship is in heaven,

  180. right?

  181. There's not a great English translation to this word,

  182. but it carries the idea of living in accord

  183. with where our citizenship is.

  184. So this is something that would have resonated

  185. with the people of Philippi,

  186. because again,

  187. as we stated before,

  188. their citizenship,

  189. their Roman citizenship,

  190. was something that would have been

  191. incredibly valuable to them.

  192. It would have been something

  193. incredibly important,

  194. right?

  195. So it would have carried weight

  196. and expectation.

  197. There was ways in which Roman citizens

  198. were expected to live.

  199. No different than us here.

  200. If I identified myself as an American citizen

  201. or said that you are an American citizen,

  202. there are some things that would pop up in your mind

  203. that say,

  204. Oh,

  205. well,

  206. this is how an American citizen acts,

  207. right?

  208. The next word I think that is beneficial to define

  209. is the word worthy.

  210. This is something to which we ascribe worth or value to,

  211. and in this case,

  212. the utmost worth or value.

  213. And then the last thing that I think

  214. is important to define here

  215. is the gospel of Christ.

  216. So the word gospel literally means good news,

  217. and even more specifically,

  218. it means the good news

  219. that Christ came to save sinners,

  220. that we were dead in our sins

  221. before a holy and righteous God

  222. with no hope of saving ourselves.

  223. We were separated from God,

  224. that Christ being fully God

  225. humbled himself

  226. by taking on human flesh,

  227. living a perfect and sinless life,

  228. was crucified and died on the cross,

  229. being the perfect sacrifice for sin.

  230. He then rose from the dead,

  231. defeating sin and death,

  232. and is now seated at the right hand of the Father.

  233. And us,

  234. through faith and believing in this gospel,

  235. can receive forgiveness of our sins

  236. and now be justified

  237. or declared righteous by God

  238. and will one day also be raised to live

  239. eternally in the presence of God

  240. in glorified bodies.

  241. That is the gospel.

  242. There is simply no greater news than this.

  243. When we talk about the gospel,

  244. when we think about the gospel,

  245. we should never assume the gospel.

  246. We should ensure that we understand

  247. what the gospel is,

  248. but those two that we are talking to,

  249. that they understand

  250. what it is when we say the gospel.

  251. I like John Piper.

  252. He summarized this passage,

  253. 127a,

  254. and he summarized it like this.

  255. He said,

  256. the all-encompassing summary

  257. of the Christian life is,

  258. live as citizens of heaven

  259. with the gospel as the center

  260. of your all-authoritative

  261. heavenly constitution,

  262. showing by your life

  263. that the gospel is worth more to you

  264. than everything else in the world.

  265. So that's the command.

  266. That's the command that Paul has given us here.

  267. So for me,

  268. I read this

  269. and this naturally leads to the question,

  270. well, how in the world do I do that?

  271. Right?

  272. That is a huge order.

  273. How do I live up to it?

  274. Where do I begin?

  275. Fortunately,

  276. Paul does not leave us guessing,

  277. but he follows this

  278. by telling us exactly

  279. what this looks like.

  280. So look at the rest of the passage with me.

  281. It says,

  282. so that whether I come and see you

  283. or am absent,

  284. I may hear of you

  285. that you are standing firm

  286. in one spirit

  287. with one mind,

  288. striving side by side

  289. for the faith of the gospel

  290. and not frightened

  291. in anything by your opponents,

  292. this is a clear sign to them

  293. of their destruction,

  294. but of your salvation

  295. and that from God.

  296. So now let's look

  297. at how we are called

  298. to live out this command.

  299. I have four points

  300. that I want to consider

  301. this morning,

  302. but I'm only going to give you

  303. the first three.

  304. I'm going to go ahead and apologize.

  305. I'm not Nathan,

  306. so there is no alliteration.

  307. Point number one,

  308. stand firm.

  309. Point number two,

  310. strive.

  311. Point number three,

  312. be fearless.

  313. So point number one,

  314. stand firm.

  315. What does it mean

  316. to stand firm?

  317. It means to be resolute

  318. and to not change course.

  319. What is it as Christians

  320. that allows us to do this?

  321. It's our faith.

  322. First Corinthians 16, 13,

  323. be watchful,

  324. stand firm in the faith,

  325. act like men,

  326. be strong.

  327. As believers,

  328. we can ultimately stand firm

  329. because of our unshakable faith

  330. in the gospel of Christ

  331. that Jesus is who he says he is.

  332. That's what allows us

  333. to withstand the forces

  334. of the world.

  335. It is what allows us

  336. to block out the noise

  337. of other people,

  338. encouraging us

  339. to stray from the path

  340. that God has set before us.

  341. Does anybody here

  342. like watching Western movies?

  343. Anybody?

  344. I grew up with them.

  345. I love them.

  346. I used to sit with my dad

  347. on Saturday mornings

  348. and we would watch the Duke,

  349. especially on Christmas.

  350. They would have the Duke marathon.

  351. But generally,

  352. in these movies,

  353. you have a main character

  354. who is always portrayed

  355. as morally good, right?

  356. I would watch this

  357. and I would always root

  358. for this guy.

  359. He would stand in the face

  360. of evil

  361. to protect someone

  362. or something

  363. from the bad guy.

  364. I always respected

  365. these people.

  366. They would do the right thing

  367. no matter what

  368. the consequences were.

  369. And inevitably,

  370. in every single movie,

  371. there's a scene,

  372. usually at the end,

  373. where they have to

  374. stand their ground

  375. in front of incredible odds.

  376. So now,

  377. even with our kids,

  378. Lauren and I,

  379. we love to give them books

  380. with examples

  381. of Christian men

  382. and women like this, right?

  383. Christian men and women

  384. who are standing firm

  385. for a higher purpose

  386. than John Wayne ever was.

  387. They love the story

  388. of Eric Liddell, right?

  389. I'm sure many of you

  390. are aware of Chariots of Fire.

  391. Anybody who ever went

  392. through Clay's house

  393. back in the day,

  394. you've definitely seen

  395. this movie a couple times.

  396. But Eric Liddell,

  397. he refused to compromise

  398. on his convictions, right?

  399. We love these stories.

  400. I put these stories

  401. in my kids' hands.

  402. I want them to emulate

  403. these saints

  404. that have gone before them, right?

  405. So we've talked about

  406. what it means to stand firm

  407. and that it's our faith

  408. that allows us to stand firm.

  409. So how do we continue

  410. to do this as Christians?

  411. How do we as Christians do this?

  412. So I think about

  413. when I was a coach,

  414. we used to tell our players

  415. all the time

  416. that pressure came

  417. when we were not prepared.

  418. So we would spend hours

  419. practicing, doing drills,

  420. watching film,

  421. doing everything

  422. we could possibly do

  423. to put our players

  424. in a position to succeed.

  425. So that way,

  426. no matter what situation

  427. happened in a game,

  428. they've seen it before,

  429. they've done it before,

  430. they're not going to be surprised,

  431. right?

  432. They're prepared.

  433. So for us as Christians,

  434. if we're going to walk

  435. faithfully with Christ

  436. in a manner worthy

  437. of the gospel,

  438. we too must be prepared.

  439. Paul says in Ephesians 6,

    Ephesians 6:1

  440. verse 1,

  441. therefore take up

  442. the whole armor of God

  443. that you may be able

  444. to withstand in the evil day

  445. and having done all

  446. to stand firm.

  447. Stand therefore,

  448. having fastened on

  449. the belt of truth

  450. and having put on

  451. the breastplace

  452. of righteousness

  453. and as shoes for your feet,

  454. having put on

  455. the readiness given

  456. by the gospel of peace.

  457. In all circumstances,

  458. take up the shield

  459. of faith

  460. with which you can extinguish

  461. all the flaming darts

  462. for the evil one

  463. and take the helmet

  464. of salvation

  465. and the sword of the spirit,

  466. which is the word of God.

  467. So to be able

  468. to stand firm,

  469. we must put on

  470. the whole armor of God.

  471. We are to immerse ourselves

  472. in the truth of God's word

  473. and wrap ourselves in it

  474. as a belt

  475. would have held in

  476. a soldier's tunic

  477. preparing him for battle.

  478. We are to put on

  479. the breastplace

  480. of righteousness

  481. as our obedience

  482. to Christ's commands

  483. and our communion with God

  484. protects us

  485. and our hearts

  486. from the schemes

  487. of the devil.

  488. We are to put on

  489. the shoes of the gospel

  490. of peace,

  491. knowing that we are

  492. supported in our walk

  493. by the peace

  494. that the gospel

  495. of Christ gives us.

  496. We are to take up

  497. the shield of faith

  498. of our,

  499. we are to take up

  500. the shield of faith

  501. in God,

  502. knowing that his word

  503. and promises are true,

  504. extinguishing the flame,

  505. flaming darts

  506. from the evil one,

  507. protecting us

  508. from sin and temptation.

  509. We are to put on

  510. the helmet of salvation,

  511. signifying that we belong

  512. to Christ

  513. and protecting our minds

  514. from doubt.

  515. And finally,

  516. we are to take up

  517. the sword of the spirit,

  518. the word of God,

  519. to fight and defend

  520. against lies

  521. and untruths.

  522. As Christians,

  523. we can stand firm

  524. by being prepared

  525. for attack

  526. and ready to defend.

  527. So take up

  528. the whole armor of God

  529. and be ready

  530. to stand firm

  531. in the faith.

  532. Point number two,

  533. strive.

  534. What does it mean

  535. to strive?

  536. The Greek word here

  537. literally means

  538. to struggle

  539. along with someone.

  540. So we'll get to

  541. the along with someone

  542. part later,

  543. spoiler alert.

  544. But I just want

  545. to talk about for now

  546. what it means

  547. to strive, right?

  548. Striving means

  549. to devote

  550. serious energy

  551. or effort

  552. to something.

  553. We cannot be

  554. inactive and strive.

  555. We cannot be lazy

  556. and strive.

  557. But what are we

  558. to strive for?

  559. It says here

  560. that we are to strive

  561. for the faith

  562. of the gospel

  563. and it can be

  564. a struggle.

  565. Paul,

  566. another great example

  567. in 2 Corinthians 11,

  568. he says,

  569. five times I received

  570. at the hands of the Jews

  571. the forty lashes

  572. less one.

  573. Three times I was

  574. beaten with rods.

  575. Once I was stoned.

  576. Three times I was

  577. shipwrecked.

  578. A night and a day

  579. I was adrift at sea

  580. on frequent journeys

  581. in danger from rivers,

  582. danger from robbers,

  583. danger from my own people,

  584. danger from Gentiles,

  585. danger in the city,

  586. danger in the wilderness,

  587. danger at sea,

  588. danger from false brothers,

  589. in toil and hardship

  590. through many a sleepless night,

  591. in hunger and thirst,

  592. often without food,

  593. in cold and exposure,

  594. and apart from other things,

  595. there is the daily pressure

  596. on me of my anxiety

  597. for all the churches.

  598. So this is what a life

  599. of struggling,

  600. striving for the faith

  601. of the gospel looks like.

  602. Paul devoted his entire life

  603. after his encounter

  604. with Christ

  605. on the road to Damascus

  606. to proclaiming the good news

  607. of the gospel of Christ,

  608. and it came for him

  609. with a multitude

  610. of hardships.

  611. Now for most of us

  612. here in America,

  613. we are not going to experience

  614. this same level of hardship

  615. that Paul experienced,

  616. but my point

  617. that I'm trying to make

  618. is that we are still

  619. called to labor

  620. regardless if we experience

  621. hardship or persecution

  622. or not.

  623. We should be actively

  624. seeking opportunities

  625. to preach the good news

  626. of Christ

  627. to the lost around us.

  628. All of us,

  629. whether we go to work

  630. every day,

  631. we go to school every day,

  632. if we're a stay-at-home mom,

  633. if we're retired,

  634. we're at the grocery store,

  635. wherever,

  636. we find ourselves

  637. in places

  638. and have opportunities

  639. to be ambassadors

  640. for Christ where we are.

  641. But doing this,

  642. it requires effort.

  643. It takes something from us

  644. to go up to a neighbor

  645. or a co-worker

  646. and engage them

  647. in gospel conversation.

  648. We have to put ourselves

  649. out there.

  650. We have to put our faith

  651. out there.

  652. We may have to overcome

  653. a little bit of anxiety

  654. or a little bit of fear.

  655. It takes effort

  656. and diligence

  657. to train up our kids

  658. in the way they should go.

  659. We may have a couple

  660. sleepless nights

  661. patiently discipling them,

  662. helping them

  663. to work through something

  664. and pointing them

  665. to Christ.

  666. Growing up,

  667. my dad had a big garden.

  668. I'm sure you guys

  669. can probably imagine

  670. where I'm going to

  671. take this analogy to.

  672. But every year,

  673. he would spend

  674. so much time on it.

  675. He would till the soil.

  676. He would fertilize the ground.

  677. He would plant the seeds.

  678. He would water.

  679. He would pull weeds.

  680. He would protect it

  681. from pests

  682. and from birds.

  683. And he did this every day.

  684. He would be sweaty.

  685. He'd have to work.

  686. He'd be sweaty.

  687. I would be out there with him,

  688. sweating right alongside

  689. with him.

  690. And I would be doing it

  691. thinking,

  692. man,

  693. I would rather be playing

  694. video games right now.

  695. Right?

  696. This is not fun.

  697. This is not enjoyable.

  698. This is work.

  699. But when it came time

  700. to harvest

  701. and it came time to eat

  702. and that corn

  703. was on my plate,

  704. I was really thankful

  705. for the work

  706. that went into it.

  707. It was good.

  708. The fruit of the labor

  709. was sweet

  710. and we got to enjoy it.

  711. How much more so

  712. for laboring

  713. for the faith

  714. of the gospel?

  715. If we truly understand

  716. our position

  717. before God

  718. apart from Christ,

  719. that we have been saved

  720. by his grace,

  721. we will love

  722. others enough

  723. to labor for them

  724. to know the same peace

  725. that we experience.

  726. Matthew 9,

  727. 36 and 38,

  728. when he,

  729. meaning Jesus,

  730. saw the crowds,

  731. he had compassion

  732. for them

  733. because they were harassed

  734. and helpless

  735. like sheep without a shepherd.

  736. Then he said

  737. to his disciples,

  738. the harvest is plentiful,

  739. but the laborers are few.

  740. Therefore,

  741. pray earnestly

  742. to the Lord of the harvest

  743. to send out laborers

  744. into the harvest.

  745. We get to be those laborers.

  746. How cool is that?

  747. Praise God

  748. that he saw fit

  749. to use us.

  750. People who received

  751. his grace

  752. that didn't deserve it

  753. to share that gospel

  754. of grace

  755. with other people.

  756. Then as we labor

  757. and as we pour into

  758. and we invest

  759. and we see this thing,

  760. hopefully we get to see

  761. the fruit of this labor.

  762. We get to see

  763. the spiritually deaf

  764. receive their hearing,

  765. the spiritually blind

  766. receive their sight.

  767. That's an amazing thing.

  768. We get to see that.

  769. So yeah,

  770. we're commanded,

  771. that's part of our call,

  772. to live a life

  773. worthy of the gospel of Christ.

  774. We are called to strive.

  775. So we have stand firm,

  776. we have strive.

  777. Now point three,

  778. be fearless.

  779. What does it mean

  780. to be fearless?

  781. Simply put,

  782. it means to be free from fear.

  783. Simple enough.

  784. Not rocket science.

  785. However,

  786. I'm sure

  787. that even the toughest of us,

  788. the biggest,

  789. the baddest,

  790. the strongest of us,

  791. there's something

  792. that we are afraid of.

  793. So how can we be freed

  794. from that fear?

  795. We can be fearless

  796. because the truth

  797. of the gospel

  798. takes away fear.

  799. Look up a couple verses

  800. in Philippians

  801. to verses 20 through 23.

  802. Paul says,

  803. as it is my eager expectation

  804. and hope that I will not be

  805. at all ashamed,

  806. but that with full courage,

  807. now as always,

  808. Christ will be honored

  809. in my body,

  810. whether by life

  811. or by death.

  812. For to me to live

  813. is Christ

  814. and to die is gain,

  815. not tell.

  816. I'm hard pressed

  817. between the two.

  818. My desire is to part

  819. and be with Christ

  820. for that is far better.

  821. What can you possibly do

  822. to somebody

  823. that has this mentality?

  824. Right?

  825. You can't touch them.

  826. Paul doesn't care

  827. if you kill them.

  828. Right?

  829. His purpose

  830. is to proclaim

  831. the gospel of Christ

  832. because he knows

  833. and we know

  834. as believers

  835. that death brings

  836. eternal communion

  837. with Christ our Savior

  838. and that there's

  839. nothing sweeter.

  840. Right?

  841. Again,

  842. if we are found in Christ,

  843. we will be raised

  844. from the dead

  845. to have eternal life

  846. with the Father.

  847. That's why we can say

  848. to live is Christ

  849. and to die is gain.

  850. Paul,

  851. he's not scared

  852. of prison either.

  853. Earlier in chapter 1,

  854. he actually says

  855. that his imprisonment

  856. has served

  857. to embolden others

  858. to speak the word

  859. without fear.

  860. He sees his own

  861. personal time

  862. in prison

  863. as a service

  864. to share the gospel

  865. throughout the whole

  866. imperial guard

  867. and he's celebrating that.

  868. It sounds like

  869. a wild way to think

  870. in our world today

  871. but as Christians,

  872. this is the way

  873. that we're called

  874. to view our own lives.

  875. Jesus says in Matthew 10,

  876. starting in verse 26,

  877. he says,

  878. So have no fear of them

  879. for nothing is covered

  880. that will not be revealed

  881. or hidden

  882. that will not be known.

  883. What I tell you

  884. in the dark,

  885. say in the light

  886. and what you hear

  887. whispered,

  888. proclaim on the housetops

  889. and do not fear

  890. those who kill the body

  891. but cannot kill the soul.

  892. Rather,

  893. fear him

  894. who can destroy

  895. both soul

  896. and body in hell.

  897. Are not two sparrows

  898. sold for a penny

  899. and not one of them

  900. will fall to the ground

  901. apart from your father?

  902. But even the hairs

  903. of your head

  904. are all numbered.

  905. Fear not,

  906. therefore,

  907. you are of more value

  908. than many sparrows.

  909. So everyone

  910. who acknowledges me

  911. before men,

  912. I also will acknowledge

  913. before my father

  914. who is in heaven.

  915. But whoever denies me

  916. before men,

  917. I also will deny

  918. before my father

  919. who is in heaven.

  920. So for us to live

  921. a manner

  922. and a manner worthy

  923. of where our true

  924. citizenship is,

  925. we are to obey

  926. our king fearlessly.

  927. We can do that

  928. because we know

  929. that he loves us

  930. and cares for us.

  931. He knitted us together

  932. in our mother's womb.

  933. If we do this,

  934. we know that Christ

  935. will acknowledge us

  936. before our father

  937. in heaven

  938. and we will receive

  939. our reward.

  940. Again,

  941. many of us

  942. will not face

  943. this level of persecution.

  944. Most of us

  945. will not simply

  946. run into that.

  947. But if we just,

  948. even for a moment,

  949. consider worst case scenario

  950. and we do face that,

  951. Paul still has something

  952. to say about it.

  953. Verse 28 of Philippians 1,

  954. not frightened

  955. in anything

  956. by your opponents

  957. for this is a clear sign

  958. to them of their destruction

  959. but of your salvation

  960. and that from God.

  961. So even if we face

  962. opposition in the gospel,

  963. it's a sign

  964. of our opponent's destruction

  965. but it is a sign

  966. of our salvation

  967. from God.

  968. Jesus said

  969. that a servant

  970. is not greater

  971. than his master

  972. and our master

  973. suffered the ultimate sacrifice

  974. that we could be set free

  975. from sin

  976. and death

  977. but also from fear

  978. as well.

  979. Paul says

  980. in verse 29

  981. that it has been granted

  982. to us

  983. that we should suffer

  984. for his sake.

  985. It's been granted

  986. to us

  987. that we should suffer

  988. for his sake.

  989. It's implying

  990. that it's a gift

  991. that has been granted

  992. to us.

  993. Why?

  994. Because if we suffer well

  995. it brings God glory

  996. and that's our purpose.

  997. We are here

  998. to glorify

  999. the Lord

  1000. our God.

  1001. So the fourth point,

  1002. I didn't give this one

  1003. to you before,

  1004. but how is

  1005. our manner of life

  1006. worthy of the gospel

  1007. of Christ?

  1008. The last point

  1009. I want to make

  1010. is that

1011. it is to be in unity

  1012. with one another.

  1013. So let's look at

  1014. our passage again

  1015. 1.27-28.

  1016. Only let

  1017. your manner of life

  1018. be worthy

  1019. of the gospel

  1020. of Christ

  1021. so that whether

1022. I come to see you

  1023. or I'm absent

1024. I may hear of you

1025. that you are standing firm

  1026. in one spirit

  1027. with one mind

  1028. striving side by side

  1029. for the faith

  1030. of the gospel

  1031. and not frightening

  1032. anything by your opponents

1033. this is a clear sign

1034. to them of their destruction

  1035. but of your salvation

  1036. and that from God.

  1037. So we can see

  1038. that we're called

  1039. to stand firm

  1040. we can see

  1041. that we're called

  1042. to strive

  1043. and we can see

  1044. that we are called

  1045. to be fearless

  1046. however

  1047. all of those commands

  1048. are tied together

  1049. in Christian unity.

1050. How do we do this?

1051. Paul talks about this as well

  1052. a couple verses down

  1053. in chapter 2

  1054. verses 2-5.

  1055. He says

  1056. complete my joy

1057. by being of the same mind

  1058. having the same love

  1059. being in full accord

  1060. and of one mind

  1061. do nothing

  1062. from selfish ambition

  1063. or conceit

  1064. but in humility

  1065. count others

  1066. more significant

  1067. than yourselves

  1068. let each of you

  1069. look not only

  1070. to his own interests

1071. but also to the interests

  1072. of others

  1073. have this mind

  1074. among yourselves

  1075. which is yours

  1076. in Christ Jesus.

  1077. So this is what

1078. this is a great picture

  1079. of what living

  1080. in Christian unity

  1081. looks like.

  1082. The beautiful thing

  1083. about this unity

  1084. is that we already

  1085. have this as Christians.

1086. We have this in Christ.

  1087. We have divine fellowship

  1088. with one another

  1089. through the Holy Spirit.

1090. So how do we live this out?

  1091. We already have it.

1092. How do we live this out?

  1093. The first thing

  1094. it looks like

  1095. it looks like

  1096. humbling ourselves.

  1097. It looks like

  1098. looking out

  1099. for the interests

  1100. of other people

  1101. over the interests

  1102. of ourselves.

1103. We have the perfect example

1104. of this in this same passage.

1105. We left off in verse 5

  1106. if we carried it

  1107. verses 6-8

  1108. talking about Jesus

  1109. who though he was

1110. in the form of God

  1111. did not count equality

  1112. with God

1113. a thing to be grasped

  1114. but emptied himself

  1115. by taking the form

  1116. of a servant

1117. being born in the likeness

  1118. of men

  1119. and being found

  1120. in human form

  1121. he humbled himself

  1122. by becoming obedient

1123. to the point of death

  1124. even death

  1125. on a cross.

  1126. There's no greater

  1127. picture of humility

1128. that you could possibly find.

  1129. You have Jesus

1130. like creator of the world

  1131. God

  1132. right?

  1133. He humbles himself

1134. taking on the human flesh

1135. the form of a servant

  1136. then he humbles himself

  1137. further

  1138. by dying

  1139. being the perfect sacrifice

  1140. for our sin

  1141. being

  1142. satisfying that debt

1143. that we could not pay

  1144. and doing it

  1145. through crucifixion

  1146. the most gruesome

  1147. possible way

  1148. that a person

  1149. could be

  1150. killed.

  1151. Like Christ

  1152. we are called

  1153. to humble ourselves

1154. for the sake of others

  1155. we are called

  1156. to genuinely

  1157. look out

  1158. for the interests

  1159. of other people

  1160. and Paul exemplifies

  1161. Timothy

  1162. later in chapter 2

  1163. in this same manner

  1164. he says

  1165. starting in verse 19

1166. I hope in the Lord Jesus

  1167. to send Timothy

  1168. to you soon

  1169. so that I too

  1170. may be cheered

  1171. by news of you

1172. for I have no one

  1173. like him

  1174. who will be genuinely

  1175. concerned for your welfare

  1176. for they all seek

  1177. their own interests

  1178. not those

  1179. of Jesus Christ

  1180. but you know

  1181. Timothy's proven worth

  1182. how as a son

  1183. with a father

  1184. he has served me

  1185. with the gospel

  1186. I would love

  1187. if my name

1188. if I was in the Bible

  1189. that this would

  1190. and that's what Paul

  1191. says about Timothy

  1192. that he was

  1193. genuinely concerned

  1194. for the Philippians

  1195. welfare

  1196. not like the others

  1197. who were only worried

  1198. about their own

  1199. interests

  1200. so again

1201. this is what we are

  1202. called to

  1203. but to do this

  1204. it requires humility

  1205. it requires patience

  1206. it requires

  1207. bearing with one another

  1208. in love

  1209. Ephesians 4

  1210. 1-7

  1211. Paul talks about this

  1212. as well

  1213. he says

  1214. I therefore

1215. a prisoner for the Lord

  1216. urge you to walk

  1217. in a manner

  1218. worthy of the calling

1219. to which you have been called

  1220. with all humility

  1221. and gentleness

  1222. with patience

  1223. bearing with one another

  1224. in love

  1225. eager to maintain

1226. the unity of the spirit

1227. and the bond of peace

  1228. there is one body

  1229. and one spirit

1230. just as you were called

  1231. to the one hope

1232. that belongs to your call

  1233. one Lord

  1234. one faith

  1235. one baptism

  1236. one God and Father

  1237. of all

  1238. who is over all

  1239. and through all

  1240. and in all

  1241. but grace was given

1242. to each one of us

  1243. according to the measure

  1244. of Christ's gift

  1245. so all of us

  1246. in Christ

1247. we have the same Father

  1248. the same Savior

  1249. we each receive grace

1250. as it was given to us

  1251. in Christ

1252. we are part of one body

1253. and share in the same spirit

1254. we all have the same hope

  1255. it's hard to imagine

  1256. that as a Christian

1257. I have more in common

  1258. with a believer

  1259. in another country

  1260. from another culture

  1261. than I do with

  1262. a family member

  1263. of mine

  1264. that is an unbeliever

  1265. but it's true

  1266. right

  1267. if we remember back

  1268. to how

  1269. the first couple

  1270. people we met

  1271. in the Philippian church

  1272. the Lydia

  1273. the seller of

  1274. purple goods

  1275. the demon

  1276. formerly demon

  1277. possessed slave girl

  1278. and the overzealous

  1279. Philippian jailer

  1280. they would have had

  1281. very little in common

  1282. apart from that bond

  1283. that they share

  1284. in Christ

  1285. right

  1286. it is that

  1287. common bond

  1288. of shared faith

  1289. and that spirit

  1290. that unifies them

  1291. together in Christ

  1292. to be a part

  1293. of one body

  1294. right

  1295. we know however

  1296. though

  1297. that maintaining

  1298. this unity

  1299. is not always easy

  1300. and we actually see

  1301. an example of that

  1302. in Philippians chapter 4

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  1303. right

  1304. later in the chapter

  1305. Paul entreats

  1306. two women

  1307. to agree

  1308. in the Lord

  1309. he says

  1310. these women

  1311. labored side by side

  1312. with him

  1313. for the gospel

  1314. he says

  1315. that their names

  1316. are written

1317. in the book of life

  1318. but yet

1319. he still has to tell them

  1320. to get along

  1321. right

  1322. that is not

  1323. how I would want

  1324. my name

  1325. to be in scripture

  1326. right

  1327. let it be said

  1328. of us

  1329. that we don't

  1330. squabble

  1331. and quarrel

  1332. amongst ourselves

  1333. we are called

  1334. to be unified

  1335. with one another

  1336. just as Christ

  1337. is unified

  1338. with the Father

  1339. last scripture

  1340. for the day

  1341. from John 17

  1342. starting in verse 20

  1343. I do not ask

  1344. for these only

  1345. but also for those

  1346. who will believe

  1347. in me

  1348. through their word

  1349. that they may

  1350. all be one

  1351. just as you

  1352. Father

  1353. are in me

  1354. and I in you

  1355. that they also

  1356. may be in us

  1357. so that the world

  1358. may believe

1359. that you have sent me

  1360. the glory

1361. that you have given me

1362. I have given to them

1363. that they may be one

1364. even as we are one

  1365. I in them

  1366. and you in me

  1367. that they may become

  1368. perfectly one

  1369. so that the world

  1370. may know

  1371. that you sent me

  1372. and love them

  1373. even as you love

  1374. me

  1375. so why are we

  1376. to be unified

  1377. with one another

  1378. so that the world

  1379. may know

  1380. that the Father

  1381. sent Christ

  1382. and loved his people

  1383. even as the Father

  1384. has loved Christ

  1385. how are we

  1386. to show the world

1387. the power of the gospel

  1388. if we cannot even

  1389. be unified

  1390. amongst ourselves

  1391. we bring glory

  1392. to God

  1393. when we show

  1394. sacrificial love

  1395. and care

  1396. for one another

  1397. and for when we

  1398. humble ourselves

  1399. we get opportunities

  1400. to do this

  1401. every single day

  1402. very rarely

  1403. is someone called

1404. to be a lone wolf

  1405. we are created

  1406. to live

  1407. in community

  1408. with one another

  1409. so when we are

  1410. when we are

  1411. sorry

  1412. when we are united

  1413. in Christ

  1414. we can help

  1415. one another

  1416. to stand firm

  1417. we can labor

  1418. together

  1419. for the sake

  1420. of the kingdom

  1421. we can encourage

  1422. one another

  1423. to be bold

  1424. and fearless

  1425. and stand

  1426. in the face

  1427. of opposition

  1428. and in doing

  1429. these things

  1430. we live

  1431. in a manner

  1432. worthy

  1433. of the gospel

  1434. of Christ

  1435. so I'm going to

1436. close in just a second

  1437. but there's just

  1438. one thing I wanted

  1439. to say

  1440. before we do that

  1441. and what that is

  1442. is I wanted to

  1443. commend you all

  1444. for the way

1445. that you guys do this

  1446. from where I sit

1447. or from where I stand

  1448. I am constantly

  1449. encouraged by you guys

  1450. for the way

  1451. in which you

  1452. lay down your own

  1453. interests

  1454. to love other people

  1455. my family

  1456. personally

  1457. has been served

  1458. many times

1459. by so many of you all

  1460. and I am incredibly

  1461. thankful for it

  1462. right

  1463. so it's

  1464. it's beautiful

  1465. to see

  1466. a group of people

  1467. do this

  1468. so well

  1469. so

  1470. my encouragement

  1471. to you all

  1472. would be

  1473. to continue

  1474. to press into this

  1475. right

  1476. continue to bring

  1477. glory to God

  1478. to show the world

  1479. around us

  1480. by our actions

  1481. that Christ

1482. was sent into the world

  1483. to save sinners

  1484. right

  1485. that Jesus is

1486. who he says he is

  1487. if you would

  1488. please join me

  1489. in prayer

  1490. who he is

  1491. who he is

  1492. who he is

  1493. who he is

  1494. who he is

  1495. who he is

  1496. who he is

  1497. who he is

  1498. who he is

  1499. who he is
