  1. Well, amen and good morning. Please take your copy of God's Word and join me in John chapter 10.

    John 10 chapter mention

  2. It's good to be back with you this morning. Last week we were wrapping up a trip to Memphis to see my niece graduate.

  3. And I think about this time when I would have preferred to be opening God's Word with you.

  4. So, I was in a minivan on Highway 22 in northern Alabama, which is just a mind-numbing stretch of road.

  5. I would have really liked to have been doing this instead, so I'm glad that I'm here with you today.

  6. Our text for today is John chapter 10, verses 1 through 6.

    John 10:1–6

  7. The Bible uses many titles to refer to Jesus Christ.

  8. I propose to you that none is more precious than the title, Good Shepherd.

  9. Lord willing, we're going to spend the next five weeks in John's Gospel in this chapter where Jesus refers to himself in this way.

  10. Now, we covered all of chapter 9 in a single week, a couple of weeks ago.

  11. So, you may go, why suddenly are we going to pump the brakes so much and slow down?

  12. And the reason is the chiastic structure.

  13. The literary structure of this chapter presses it in that direction.

  14. So, really quickly, if you're unfamiliar with chiasms, it's a literary structure that allows you to take a text and fold it upon itself.

  15. So, the first thing in the text corresponding with the last thing in the text and stepping toward a center of the text.

  16. So, just quickly and broadly, I want to walk you through chapter 10 so you'll get why we're doing this.

  17. And then we'll do a little bit of background and then read our text together.

  18. So, firstly, the first section, today's text, verses 1 through 6.

  19. The sheep hear the shepherd's voice.

  20. So, kind of thematically, we're picking that up.

  21. Then the corresponding part of it is the substantive part of the text, which is verses 19 through 42.

  22. So, Lord willing, a month from now, we'll look at those verses together.

  23. And there, we see Jesus saying again that his sheep hear his voice.

  24. Next, verses 7 through 10, Jesus talks about him being the door for the sheep.

  25. And correspondingly, verses 15 through 18, he talks about laying down his life for the sheep.

  26. And then the central piece of it is Jesus declaring himself the good shepherd in verse 11 and in verse 14.

  27. So, we'll take a look at each of those, and I won't talk about it at all today, past this, but verses 1 through 6, also chiastic.

  28. And each of those breaks down in that way.

  29. As we spend this time in John chapter 10, it has been my prayer that God would profit us greatly as we take it up.

    John 10 chapter mention

  30. So, before we read, allow me just a moment to connect the end of chapter 9 to the discourse that is before us.

  31. In chapter 9, Jesus heals a man who was born blind.

  32. As you have come to expect, this causes confusion and commotion.

  33. So, the man is brought before the Pharisees and put through a series of examinations.

  34. First him, then his parents, and then back to him again.

  35. At the conclusion of this series of examinations, the man says, this is chapter 9 in verse 33,

    Isaiah 9 chapter mention

  36. If this man, referring to Jesus, were not from God, he could do nothing.

  37. And they answered him.

  38. This is a group of Pharisees he's brought before.

  39. You were born in utter sin, and would you teach us?

  40. And they cast him out.

  41. Verse 35, Jesus heard they had cast him out.

  42. And having found him, he said,

  43. Do you believe in the Son of Man?

  44. He answered, And who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?

  45. Jesus said to him,

  46. You have seen him, and it is he who is speaking to you.

  47. He said, Lord, I believe.

  48. And he worshipped him.

  49. So, Jesus welcomes the man that was born blind, that he had healed.

  50. Verse 39, Jesus said,

  51. For judgment I came into this world, that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind.

  52. Some of the Pharisees near him heard these things and said to him,

  53. Are we also blind?

  54. Jesus said to them,

  55. If you were blind, you would have no guilt.

  56. But now that you say, we see, your guilt remains.

  57. So, we spent a minute of time talking about this text,

  58. And noted that Jesus, having healed a blind man of his physical disability,

  59. And then, much more importantly, of his spiritual disability,

  60. Uses this sight language to expose the prideful Pharisees.

  61. He's speaking here with a great deal of irony.

  62. Similarly, in Mark chapter 2, verse 16 and 17,

    Mark 2:16

  63. We read,

  64. And the scribes of the Pharisees, when they saw that he was eating with sinners and tax collectors,

  65. Said to his disciples,

  66. Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?

  67. And when Jesus heard it, he said to them,

  68. Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.

  69. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.

  70. So, it's these men that think they're righteous because of their careful observance of the law,

  71. Which was not a perfect observance of the law.

  72. See no need of a savior that Jesus is talking about here.

  73. And so, it's in this context that Jesus goes on to speak in chapter 10.

  74. He is speaking to these Pharisees.

  75. Blind men who have been thrown out of the synagogue a seeing man.

  76. So, John chapter 10, verses 1 through 6.

    John 10:1–6

  77. And I'm actually going to read all the way through verse 18,

  78. Just to get our heads set into the discourse.

  79. But before I do, I'll pray.

  80. Father, would you help us as we take up your word together this morning?

  81. Would you bless my feeble preparation and I'm sure my feeble delivery?

  82. We want to rightly understand it.

  83. We want to behold Jesus by it.

  84. We want to be changed from one degree of glory to another for the sake of your name.

  85. And so, it's in that name that we pray.

  86. Amen.

  87. Alright, John 10, beginning in verse 1.

  88. Jesus says,

  89. Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs in by another way,

  90. that man is a thief and a robber.

  91. But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.

  92. To him the gatekeeper opens.

  93. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.

  94. When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice.

  95. A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.

  96. This figure of speech Jesus used with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them.

  97. So Jesus again said to them,

  98. Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep.

  99. All who come before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them.

  100. I am the door.

  101. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.

  102. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.

  103. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

  104. I am the good shepherd.

  105. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

  106. He who is a hired hand and not a shepherd, who does not own the sheep,

  107. sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them.

  108. He flees because he has a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.

  109. I am the good shepherd.

  110. I know my own, and my own know me.

  111. Just as the Father knows me, and I know the Father, and I lay down my life for the sheep.

  112. And I have other sheep that are not of this fold.

  113. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice.

  114. So there will be one flock, one shepherd.

  115. For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again.

  116. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord.

  117. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again.

  118. This charge I have received from my Father.

  119. So Jesus, in chapter 10, employs a rich metaphor.

  120. We have very little cultural context to enliven what is happening in this moment.

  121. First century Jews were agrarian people.

  122. The whole economy was based on livestock and fields and harvest.

  123. First, the average person among us can see a cow eating grass in a field

  124. and then order a burger in a drive-thru and make no mental connection between the two.

  125. How does one get from there to there?

  126. But not so with them.

  127. Livestock were part of their daily experience.

  128. Sheep being taken out to pasture and brought back into safety at night

  129. would have happened regularly, happened right in front of them.

  130. So this picture of sheep being called out and led would have been vivid in their minds.

  131. This is strategic language that Jesus is employing here.

  132. Further, and I would suggest more importantly,

  133. it's a rich metaphor because of its biblical foundation.

  134. I hope that we are a bit less lost at this point.

  135. Perhaps you know your Old Testament well.

  136. I hope so.

  137. The men that Jesus is addressing most certainly would have known their Old Testament well.

  138. Does anything leap into your mind when Jesus presents himself as a shepherd?

  139. I hope something, something jumps up in your mind.

  140. We read together Psalm 23 not that long ago.

  141. Perhaps at least that text for you.

  142. But if not, some time in the Old Testament is going to serve us well at this point.

  143. So leave John 10 behind for just a moment

  144. and join me in some quick sweeping Bible background

  145. by joining me in Ezekiel chapter 34.

    Ezekiel 34 chapter mention

  146. The blessed sound of turning pages.

  147. Ezekiel 34.

  148. I'm going to hop through this text a little bit just for the sake of time.

  149. Listen to the words that Ezekiel recorded.

  150. Verse 1.

  151. The word of the Lord came to me.

  152. Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel.

  153. Prophesy and say to them, even to the shepherds,

  154. thus says the Lord God.

  155. Ah, shepherds of Israel who have been feeding yourselves.

  156. Should not shepherds feed the sheep?

  157. You eat the fat.

  158. You clothe yourselves with wool.

  159. You slaughter the fat ones, but you do not feed the sheep.

  160. The weak you have not strengthened.

  161. The sick you have not healed.

  162. The injured you have not bound up.

  163. The strayed you have not brought back.

  164. The lost you have not sought.

  165. And with force and harshness you have ruled them.

  166. So they were scattered.

  167. Because there was no shepherd,

  168. and they became food for all the wild beasts,

  169. my sheep were scattered.

  170. Skip to verse 11.

  171. For thus says the Lord God,

  172. Behold, I myself will search for my sheep,

  173. and will seek them out.

  174. As a shepherd seeks out his flock,

  175. when he is among his sheep that have been scattered,

  176. so will I seek out my sheep,

  177. and I will rescue them from all places

  178. where they have been scattered,

  179. on a day of clouds and thick darkness.

  180. And I will bring them out from the peoples,

  181. and gather them from the countries,

  182. and will bring them into their own land,

  183. and I will feed them on the mountains of Israel,

  184. by the ravines,

  185. and in all the inhabited places of the country.

  186. I will feed them with good pasture,

  187. and on the mountain heights of Israel

  188. shall be their grazing land.

  189. There they shall lie down in good grazing land,

  190. and on rich pasture they shall feed

  191. on the mountains of Israel.

  192. I myself will be the shepherd of my sheep,

  193. and I myself will make them lie down,

  194. declares the Lord God.

  195. Skip to verse 22.

  196. I will rescue my flock.

  197. They shall no longer be a prey,

  198. and I will judge between sheep and sheep.

  199. And I will set up over them one shepherd,

  200. my servant David,

  201. and he shall feed them.

  202. He shall feed them and be their shepherd.

  203. And I, the Lord, will be their God,

  204. and my servant David shall be prince among them.

  205. I am the Lord.

  206. I have spoken.

  207. I will make with them a covenant of peace

  208. and banish wild beasts from the land

  209. so that they may dwell securely in the wilderness

  210. and sleep in the woods.

  211. Shepherds who are taking advantage of the sheep,

  212. we see in Ezekiel 34.

  213. Sheep who are scattered.

  214. A prince who protects and feeds.

  215. The men Jesus is speaking to,

  216. were they not blind,

  217. should be perceiving all of this

  218. as Jesus presents this metaphor.

  219. This text should be alive in their minds.

  220. However, this is not the only Old Testament text.

  221. These men declared themselves disciples of Moses

  222. in John chapter 9 and verse 28.

    John 9 chapter mention

  223. One might think they would recall the prayer of Moses

  224. for a successor.

  225. Numbers 27, verse 15 and following,

    Numbers 27:15

  226. Moses spoke to the Lord saying,

  227. Let the Lord, the God of the spirits of all flesh,

  228. appoint a man over the congregation

  229. who shall go out before them

  230. and come in before them,

  231. who shall lead them out and bring them in.

  232. Language sound familiar?

  233. That the congregation of the Lord

  234. may not be as sheep that have no shepherd.

  235. The next verse in Numbers 27

  236. names Joshua as Moses' successor.

  237. So we've got David as a type for Christ

  238. and Ezekiel.

  239. We've got Joshua now.

  240. Jesus is the transliteration of the name Joshua

  241. from Hebrew to Greek to English.

  242. These connections ought to be being made.

  243. Other Old Testament passages indict the priests

  244. for not shepherding as they should.

  245. Isaiah 56, verse 9 through 12.

    Isaiah 56:9–12

  246. Jeremiah 23, verse 1 through 4.

    Jeremiah 23:1–4

  247. Chapter 25, verse 32 to 38.

  248. Zechariah 11.

  249. I'm just showing you that it's replete.

  250. It's all throughout the text.

  251. And the Old Testament presents God

  252. as the ultimate shepherd of his people.

  253. Psalm 23, Psalm 80, verse 1,

    Psalms 80:1

  254. Isaiah 40, and verse 11.

  255. Do you see how rich this metaphor is?

  256. It's not random.

  257. It's not offhanded.

  258. Jesus is not shooting from the hip here at all.

  259. He's saying some very, very clear things

  260. to this group of men.

  261. This is a metaphor.

  262. It's laden with Old Testament teaching.

  263. In a few short words,

  264. he's bringing all of this up

  265. to say to them that they are false shepherds

  266. and that he is the true God

  267. who will call out his people.

  268. Now, in the back of your bulletin,

  269. adults, it's not really for you,

  270. but you might like to color too.

  271. There's a cartoon.

  272. And it's a quote from John Calvin.

  273. This is in his preface

  274. to Olivier Tannes' New Testament.

  275. I hope I pronounced that correctly.

  276. He said this quote,

  277. So,

  278. you rightly take up,

  279. rightly study the Old Testament,

  280. you will arrive at the conclusion

  281. that Jesus is the Christ.

  282. And that is the very point

  283. that Jesus is making here.

  284. He's not being cryptic in John 10.

  285. He's indicting false religion

  286. and false teachers.

  287. They know exactly what's going on.

  288. We'll see as we progress

  289. through chapter 10.

  290. But verse 6 records,

  291. back in John 10,

  292. this figure of speech

  293. Jesus used with them,

  294. but they did not understand

  295. what he was saying to them.

  296. And understanding all of that background,

  297. John means for this to be striking to us.

  298. How could these men not understand

  299. the thing that he is saying

  300. as he speaks of himself

  301. as the shepherd?

  302. This is how he begins the dialogue,

  303. verse 1.

  304. Truly, truly,

  305. it's to say,

  306. really, really,

  307. listen, pay attention,

  308. this is true,

  309. I say to you,

  310. he who does not enter

  311. the sheepfold by the door,

  312. but climbs in by another way,

  313. that man is a thief

  314. and a robber.

  315. He's expounding on

  316. what he has said at the end,

  317. of chapter 9.

  318. Now, the sheepfold

  319. was a place

  320. where a group of families

  321. would bring their flocks

  322. in at night

  323. for protection.

  324. Right?

  325. Smaller flocks,

  326. a group of people

  327. partnering together

  328. to put them into

  329. a common pen

  330. or perhaps a courtyard,

  331. and a man,

  332. often referred to

  333. as an under-shepherd,

  334. would be hired

  335. to watch over them

  336. throughout the night.

  337. Now, the sheep

  338. would be safe

  339. from predators

  340. in the sheepfold.

  341. It was a structure

  342. designed to keep wolves

  343. out,

  344. but not safe

  345. from a thief

  346. and a robber.

  347. So,

  348. somebody would be hired

  349. to look over

  350. the space

  351. and make sure

  352. somebody didn't come in

  353. and take out

  354. what was not theirs.

  355. Now,

  356. these words,

  357. thief and robber,

  358. are too similar

  359. in English

  360. to ascertain

  361. much of any

  362. variance in them.

  363. Isn't a thief

  364. and a robber

  365. just the very same thing?

  366. But they could be

  367. translated from the original

  368. a thief

  369. and an insurrectionist.

  370. I don't pretend

  371. to know exactly

  372. what Jesus means

  373. by these two words,

  374. but perhaps he is suggesting

  375. that the leader

  376. who is not the shepherd

  377. doesn't belong

  378. among the sheep

  379. as he gets in

  380. and he stirs up,

  381. but he means harm

  382. and he causes rebellion.

  383. Well,

  384. whatever is meant here,

  385. they are presented

  386. as being harmful

  387. and being entirely

  388. unconcerned

  389. about entering

  390. the proper way.

  391. Now,

  392. I don't believe

  393. that anybody

  394. in my hearing,

  395. I could be wrong,

  396. but falls into this category

  397. of false religion,

  398. false teacher.

  399. My assumption this morning

  400. is that none of you

  401. are presently

  402. in the works

  403. of trying to form

  404. a cult of some kind.

  405. At least I certainly hope

  406. that that's not the case.

  407. The strong indictment

  408. of this text

  409. really doesn't demand

  410. a lot of our time,

  411. but what does require

  412. attention

  413. is the juxtaposition

  414. of the metaphor

  415. which then infers

  416. some warning

  417. for us.

  418. not this,

  419. but this,

  420. and here we have

  421. such opportunity

  422. to look

  423. to Christ.

  424. Verse 2 says,

  425. but he who enters

  426. by the door

  427. is the shepherd

  428. of the sheep.

  429. Jesus

  430. is the shepherd

  431. of the sheep.

  432. verse 1-6

  433. might leave that

  434. unclear,

  435. but we know

  436. this is the case

  437. because he tells us

  438. so in verse 11

  439. and verse 14.

  440. There he says,

  441. I am the good shepherd.

  442. The good shepherd

  443. lays down his life

  444. for the sheep.

  445. Verse 14,

  446. I am the good shepherd.

  447. I know my own

  448. and my own

  449. know me.

  450. It's the shepherd

  451. that is granted

  452. access

  453. to the sheep

  454. because he has

  455. the authority

  456. to come into the sheep.

  457. He is the shepherd

  458. and so it is to him

  459. the gatekeeper,

  460. this under-shepherd

  461. opens.

  462. He comes and knocks

  463. and the gate

  464. is opened

  465. for the shepherd.

  466. At once,

  467. the gate is opened.

  468. And what is it

  469. that the shepherd

  470. does

  471. when the gate

  472. is opened?

  473. He calls his sheep.

  474. What the shepherd

  475. does is he gathers

  476. to himself

  477. his sheep.

  478. The job of a shepherd

  479. is to lead

  480. sheep.

  481. But notice,

  482. not every sheep

  483. in the sheepfold.

  484. Therein lies

  485. the inferred

  486. warning.

  487. Jesus calls

  488. his

  489. sheep.

  490. Verse 3 goes on,

  491. the sheep

  492. hear his voice

  493. and he calls

  494. his own sheep

  495. by name

  496. and leads

  497. them

  498. out.

  499. sheep.

  500. Now,

  501. sheep are

  502. not the brightest

  503. of animals.

  504. They desperately

  505. need shepherding

  506. as they will not

  507. stay alive long

  508. without someone

  509. watching over them.

  510. I challenge you,

  511. and you may know

  512. of one,

  513. I've never heard

  514. of wild sheep.

  515. I don't think

  516. they exist.

  517. I think they will

  518. get eaten

  519. and wiped out.

  520. However,

  521. to the sheep's

  522. credit,

  523. sheep can

  524. and do

  525. learn the voice

  526. of their shepherd

  527. and will loyally

  528. follow

  529. his voice.

  530. This is still

  531. a Near East

  532. shepherding

  533. practice,

  534. to gather

  535. small flocks

  536. into larger

  537. flocks

  538. for protection

  539. at night.

  540. Shepherds will

  541. team up together

  542. to help

  543. protect one

  544. another's

  545. sheep.

  546. And in the morning,

  547. each shepherd

  548. calls to their

  549. sheep,

  550. and as they

  551. go their

  552. separate ways,

  553. the sheep

  554. will follow

  555. their shepherd.

  556. There is

  557. not confusion

  558. about which

  559. sheep belong

  560. to whom.

  561. They don't have

  562. to brand them

  563. and figure out

  564. how to sort

  565. them out.

  566. Again,

  567. the sheep

  568. know who

  569. they are

  570. to follow.

  571. The Bible,

  572. as we have

  573. already noted,

  574. uses this

  575. sheep metaphor

  576. for God's

  577. people.

  578. I think

  579. it's very

  580. healthy for

  581. us to push

  582. against a

  583. highly

  584. individualized

  585. version of

  586. Christianity.

  587. We get that

  588. me and

  589. Jesus type

  590. of culture.

  591. Most of you

  592. here are

  593. members of

  594. our church

  595. and we've

  596. pressed upon

  597. you the

  598. need for

  599. that.

  600. It's a

  601. biblical

  602. command that

  603. you be

  604. joined to

  605. a group

  606. of Christians.

  607. This is

  608. part of

  609. God's

  610. design for

  611. healthy

  612. Christian

  613. living.

  614. I want

  615. you,

  616. when you

  617. think of

  618. your salvation,

  619. to be

  620. caught up

  621. into thoughts

  622. that are

  623. much grander

  624. than just

  625. you.

  626. I want

  627. you to

  628. think of

  629. peoples saved

  630. for the

  631. glory of

  632. God.

  633. Peoples from

  634. all over the

  635. world called

  636. into local

  637. assemblies to

  638. love and

  639. serve one

  640. another.

  641. But,

  642. when the

  643. Bible

  644. individualizes

  645. our salvation,

  646. we should

  647. pause,

  648. just for a

  649. moment,

  650. to do the

  651. very same.

  652. people,

  653. I find

  654. these words

  655. just

  656. incredible.

  657. The sheep

  658. hear his

  659. voice,

  660. and he

  661. calls his

  662. own sheep

  663. by name

  664. and leads

  665. them out.

  666. This is a

  667. variance on

  668. the picture

  669. of a

  670. shepherd.

  671. In reality,

  672. he would say

  673. something.

  674. I don't know

  675. what shepherds

  676. say to sheep.

  677. He'd give

  678. some kind of

  679. a command

  680. or a

  681. noise or

  682. something,

  683. and they

  684. would hear

  685. him and

  686. they would

  687. know it's

  688. time to

  689. move.

  690. But here,

  691. Jesus presents

  692. himself as

  693. calling them

  694. individually by

  695. name.

  696. His sheep,

  697. drawing them

  698. together into

  699. a flock and

  700. leading them

  701. out.

  702. Now,

  703. if at this

  704. point the

  705. question enters

  706. your mind,

  707. am I one

  708. of his

  709. sheep?

  710. I want you

  711. to know that

  712. I do not

  713. think that

  714. question

  715. unfair,

  716. but I do

  717. think that

  718. it is the

  719. wrong

  720. question.

  721. I would

  722. say to

  723. you rather,

  724. if you're

  725. unsure,

  726. has Jesus

  727. called me

  728. by name,

  729. you should

  730. ask the

  731. question,

  732. do I

  733. hear him

  734. calling?

  735. If so,

  736. follow.

  737. Don't ask

  738. the other

  739. question.

  740. Do you

  741. hear him

  742. calling?

  743. Follow.

  744. You may

  745. find that

  746. you are

  747. sitting here

  748. this morning

  749. as a

  750. means of

  751. Jesus

  752. calling your

  753. name.

  754. I'm not

  755. asking you

  756. to audibly

  757. hear him

  758. call your

  759. name.

  760. You're in

  761. church this

  762. morning,

  763. hearing the

  764. gospel and

  765. our prayers

  766. and our

  767. singing,

  768. read,

  769. preached.

  770. You may

  771. have been

  772. born into a

  773. family with

  774. Christian parents

  775. as a means

  776. of Jesus

  777. calling your

  778. name.

  779. Jesus

  780. delights in

  781. using ordinary

  782. means for

  783. extraordinary

  784. ends.

  785. do you

  786. hear him

  787. calling your

  788. name?

  789. Do you

  790. find yourself

  791. hearing the

  792. gospel of

  793. Jesus Christ?

  794. Repent and

  795. believe.

  796. Follow.

  797. Follow.

  798. He goes

  799. on in

  800. verse 4,

  801. when he

  802. has brought

  803. out all

  804. his own,

  805. he goes

  806. before them

  807. and the

  808. sheep follow

  809. him for

  810. they know

  811. his voice.

  812. sheep.

  813. Now I

  814. learned

  815. something this

  816. week about

  817. shepherding that

  818. I was unaware

  819. of.

  820. I thought I

  821. had my head

  822. wrapped around

  823. it.

  824. This is what I

  825. learned.

  826. Sheep that

  827. are led

  828. back and

  829. forth from

  830. familiar pasture

  831. to familiar

  832. pins or

  833. enclosures

  834. back to the

  835. barn are

  836. typically led

  837. from behind.

  838. Kind of the

  839. normal picture,

  840. at least in my

  841. head, that we

  842. have of shepherds

  843. walking along

  844. behind with the

  845. staff, right,

  846. giving little

  847. corrections as

  848. they go, but

  849. from behind.

  850. That's the

  851. picture that

  852. comes into

  853. your mind

  854. or not.

  855. The shepherd's

  856. concern is for

  857. that occasional

  858. straggler,

  859. right, that

  860. wanders off,

  861. is distracted

  862. by something.

  863. But the

  864. sheep generally

  865. know the way

  866. they are to

  867. go.

  868. Some of them

  869. get out in

  870. front and

  871. lead, they

  872. know the

  873. place they're

  874. going to,

  875. and so off

  876. places are

  877. led from

  878. the front.

  879. Sheep don't

  880. naturally

  881. trust a

  882. pathway.

  883. You can't

  884. put them

  885. on a

  886. road and

  887. just expect

  888. them to

  889. walk down

  890. the road,

  891. or can

  892. they comprehend

  893. a destination?

  894. You can't

  895. tell them,

  896. hey, we're

  897. going over

  898. there.

  899. They don't

  900. understand what

  901. you might be

  902. saying.

  903. So the

  904. shepherd sets

  905. the example

  906. and goes

  907. before them,

  908. leads out

  909. ahead of

  910. them.

  911. this is

  912. so

  913. astoundingly

  914. tender

  915. and

  916. merciful.

  917. Jesus

  918. says this

  919. with

  920. purpose.

  921. He leads

  922. them to a

  923. place that

  924. they have

  925. not been,

  926. and he

  927. goes there

  928. first.

  929. My mind

  930. leapt to

  931. Hebrews

    Hebrews 6:19

  932. chapter 6,

  933. verse 19

  934. and following.

  935. There the

  936. author says,

  937. we have

  938. this as a

  939. sure and

  940. steadfast

  941. anchor of

  942. the soul,

  943. a hope

  944. that enters

  945. into the

  946. inner place

  947. behind the

  948. curtain,

  949. where Jesus

  950. has gone

  951. as a

  952. forerunner

  953. on our

  954. behalf.

  955. Jesus goes

  956. before us

  957. into the

  958. presence of

  959. God that

  960. we might

  961. also go

  962. there.

  963. Jesus does

  964. not lead

  965. his people

  966. anywhere

  967. that he

  968. has not

  969. first

  970. gone.

  971. suffered,

  972. died,

  973. was raised.

  974. What a

  975. savior.

  976. What a

  977. shepherd.

  978. This

  979. reflection,

  980. this little

  981. piece so

  982. far has

  983. been worth

  984. all the

  985. time I

  986. have spent

  987. on these

  988. brief

  989. verses.

  990. This was

  991. the moment

  992. that I

  993. went,

  994. oh,

  995. this is

  996. a good

  997. text.

  998. What a

  999. blessing it

  1000. is that I

  1001. get to

  1002. open this

  1003. text and

  1004. talk about

  1005. it.

  1006. This

  1007. morning,

  1008. Jesus goes

  1009. before his

  1010. sheep.

  1011. He doesn't

  1012. prod us

  1013. from behind,

  1014. he leads

  1015. from the

  1016. front.

  1017. And what

  1018. do the

  1019. sheep do?

  1020. Notice,

  1021. the sheep

  1022. follow him

  1023. for they

  1024. know his

  1025. voice.

  1026. This is a

  1027. picture of

  1028. deep

  1029. trust.

  1030. The sheep

  1031. say,

  1032. this shepherd

  1033. has always

  1034. led us,

  1035. will we

  1036. will gladly

  1037. go wherever

  1038. he leads.

  1039. Spurgeon

  1040. once said,

  1041. this is also

  1042. in your

  1043. bulletin if

  1044. you care,

  1045. Jesus is

  1046. the good

  1047. shepherd going

  1048. before his

  1049. sheep,

  1050. bidding them

  1051. follow him,

  1052. and ever

  1053. leading them

  1054. onwards with

  1055. the sweet

  1056. word,

  1057. come.

  1058. The

  1059. obedience of

  1060. Jesus'

  1061. sheep

  1062. trusts

  1063. that wherever

  1064. he leads,

  1065. it will be

  1066. for their

  1067. ultimate

  1068. good.

  1069. We read

  1070. earlier,

  1071. Psalm 23,

  1072. as I've

  1073. already

  1074. mentioned.

  1075. Jesus is

  1076. the Lord

  1077. of Psalm

  1078. 23.

  1079. Listen again

  1080. to these

  1081. words of

  1082. David.

  1083. The Lord

  1084. is my

  1085. shepherd,

  1086. I shall

  1087. not want.

  1088. He makes

  1089. me lie

  1090. down in

  1091. green

  1092. pastures.

  1093. He leads

  1094. me beside

  1095. still waters.

  1096. He restores

  1097. my soul.

  1098. He leads

  1099. me in

  1100. paths of

  1101. righteousness

  1102. for his

  1103. name's

  1104. sake.

  1105. Even

  1106. though I

  1107. walk

  1108. through the

  1109. valley of

  1110. the shadow

  1111. of death,

  1112. I will

  1113. fear no

  1114. evil,

  1115. for you

  1116. are with

  1117. me,

  1118. your rod

  1119. and your

  1120. staff.

  1121. They

  1122. comfort me.

  1123. You prepare

  1124. a table

  1125. before me

  1126. in the

  1127. presence of

  1128. my enemies.

  1129. You anoint

  1130. my head

  1131. with oil.

  1132. My cup

  1133. overflows.

  1134. Surely

  1135. goodness

  1136. and mercy

  1137. shall follow

  1138. me all the

  1139. days of my

  1140. life,

  1141. and I

  1142. shall dwell

  1143. in the

  1144. house of

  1145. the Lord

  1146. forever.

  1147. Satisfaction,

  1148. good provision

  1149. and safe

  1150. waters,

  1151. proper paths,

  1152. but notice

  1153. that the

  1154. way is

  1155. not always

  1156. easy.

  1157. However,

  1158. comfort,

  1159. goodness,

  1160. mercy,

  1161. and God's

  1162. presence belong

  1163. to those

  1164. who belong

  1165. to him.

  1166. This is

  1167. why the

  1168. sheep

  1169. follow him

  1170. for they

  1171. know

  1172. his voice.

  1173. It bears

  1174. saying that

  1175. this is a

  1176. text about

  1177. belonging.

  1178. Remember my

  1179. reference earlier

  1180. to the man

  1181. who was cast

  1182. out of the

  1183. synagogue,

  1184. and Jesus

  1185. comes and

  1186. finds him

  1187. and welcomes

  1188. him.

  1189. It's a text

  1190. about belonging,

  1191. not a text

  1192. about discerning

  1193. God's will.

  1194. not at all

  1195. what Jesus

  1196. is trying

  1197. to communicate

  1198. here.

  1199. He's saying

  1200. you either

  1201. are my

  1202. sheep

  1203. or you

  1204. are not

  1205. my

  1206. sheep.

  1207. I think

  1208. we should

  1209. be careful

  1210. at this

  1211. point

  1212. to not

  1213. spin the

  1214. metaphor

  1215. off in

  1216. a direction

  1217. that is

  1218. not

  1219. meant.

  1220. Some,

  1221. in an

  1222. effort to

  1223. discern

  1224. the voice

  1225. of Jesus,

  1226. have become

  1227. a thief

  1228. and a

  1229. robber,

  1230. thinking they

  1231. hear a

  1232. voice,

  1233. something

  1234. that,

  1235. some truth

  1236. that exists

  1237. outside the

  1238. text of

  1239. the Bible

  1240. and the

  1241. list is

  1242. endless,

  1243. it would

  1244. seem,

  1245. these days.

  1246. False

  1247. teachers,

  1248. false

  1249. religion.

  1250. That's not

  1251. what Jesus

  1252. is communicating.

  1253. He's talking

  1254. about belonging.

  1255. Knowing the

  1256. voice of the

  1257. shepherd in

  1258. this context

  1259. is about

  1260. hearing and

  1261. responding to

  1262. the call

  1263. of the

  1264. gospel.

  1265. Recognizing

  1266. our great

  1267. need of

  1268. a Savior

  1269. and him

  1270. presenting

  1271. himself to

  1272. us and

  1273. us following

  1274. him because

  1275. we know

  1276. his voice.

  1277. Be careful

  1278. not to make

  1279. it more

  1280. than that

  1281. or to

  1282. make it

  1283. any less

  1284. than that.

  1285. Verse

  1286. five,

  1287. a stranger,

  1288. Jesus says,

  1289. they will

  1290. not follow

  1291. but they

  1292. will flee

  1293. from him

  1294. for they

  1295. do not

  1296. know the

  1297. voice

  1298. of strangers.

  1299. Verse

  1300. five brings

  1301. me as a

  1302. minister of

  1303. the gospel

  1304. great comfort.

  1305. I hope it

  1306. does the

  1307. same for

  1308. you as

  1309. you seek

  1310. to share

  1311. the good

  1312. news with

  1313. others.

  1314. God's

  1315. people will

  1316. heed the

  1317. call of

  1318. the gospel.

  1319. God's

  1320. people will

  1321. not follow

  1322. the voice

  1323. of strangers

  1324. but as

  1325. the gospel

  1326. call is

  1327. made,

  1328. God's

  1329. people will

  1330. respond

  1331. in obedience.

  1332. And so

  1333. what are we

  1334. to do?

  1335. Be the

  1336. voice of

  1337. Jesus.

  1338. Open up

  1339. the text,

  1340. explain the

  1341. word,

  1342. share the

  1343. good news

  1344. with people

  1345. and trust

  1346. God's

  1347. saving

  1348. purpose.

  1349. This is why

  1350. I'm grateful

  1351. things like

  1352. this bolster

  1353. our confidence

  1354. that when we

  1355. gather together

  1356. as a

  1357. church,

  1358. we should

  1359. just open

  1360. and preach

  1361. the word.

  1362. Sing the

  1363. word,

  1364. pray the

  1365. word,

  1366. see the

  1367. word in

  1368. the ordinances

  1369. and just do

  1370. that week

  1371. in and

  1372. week out.

  1373. The

  1374. blessed

  1375. thing that

  1376. God is

  1377. about the

  1378. work of

  1379. saving

  1380. his people.

  1381. He has

  1382. sent to

  1383. us the

  1384. good

  1385. shepherd

  1386. and God's

  1387. people will

  1388. hear his

  1389. voice and

  1390. they will

  1391. respond

  1392. in obedience.

  1393. No need

  1394. to fly me

  1395. into this

  1396. room on

  1397. cables to

  1398. impress you

  1399. all,

  1400. land me

  1401. on the

  1402. stage,

  1403. jump dirt

  1404. bikes across

  1405. the stage,

  1406. or give

  1407. away a

  1408. car on

  1409. Easter Sunday.

  1410. He's going

  1411. to gather

  1412. and preach

  1413. the word

  1414. and send

  1415. you out

  1416. to do

  1417. the very

  1418. same

  1419. thing.

  1420. He's

  1421. calling people

  1422. by name

  1423. and those

  1424. sheep

  1425. will know

  1426. his voice

  1427. and they

  1428. will follow.

  1429. So whether

  1430. you have

  1431. confidence

  1432. this morning

  1433. that you

  1434. have been

  1435. called by

  1436. name and

  1437. are following

  1438. the good

  1439. shepherd or

  1440. you don't

  1441. have confidence

  1442. that this

  1443. is true

  1444. of you,

  1445. I want

  1446. you to

  1447. hear my

  1448. plea in

  1449. closing.

  1450. He is

  1451. a good

  1452. shepherd.

  1453. He has

  1454. gone before

  1455. us.

  1456. In him

  1457. there is

  1458. satisfaction

  1459. and good

  1460. provision

  1461. and safe

  1462. waters,

  1463. proper paths

  1464. that are not

  1465. always easy

  1466. but comfort

  1467. and goodness

  1468. and mercy

  1469. and his

  1470. presence.

  1471. So listen

  1472. and follow.

  1473. Let's pray.
