  1. Well, amen and good morning. Please take your copy of God's Word and join me in John chapter 10.

    John 10 chapter mention

  2. Well served. Before I do, let me pray for God's blessing on our time.

  3. Father God, we thank you this morning for your inspired, infallible, authoritative, sufficient Word.

  4. We pray, Father, this day you will help us by your Spirit to trust it,

  5. that you will empower the preaching of your Word and the hearing of your Word,

  6. our understanding and application of it.

  7. Certainly our very best of attempts are feeble, apart from your intervention.

  8. So we ask that you would help us as we take up your Word together this day.

  9. And I pray this in Christ's name. Amen.

  10. All right, John chapter 10, beginning in verse 1.

    John 10 chapter mention

  11. Jesus says,

  12. Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs in by another way,

  13. that man is a thief and a robber.

  14. But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.

  15. To him the gatekeeper opens.

  16. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.

  17. When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice.

  18. A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.

  19. This figure of speech Jesus used with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them.

  20. So Jesus again said to them,

  21. Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep.

  22. All who came before me are thieves and robbers.

  23. But the sheep did not listen to them.

  24. I am the door.

  25. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.

  26. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.

  27. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

  28. I am the good shepherd.

  29. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

  30. He who has a hired hand and not a shepherd, who does not own the sheep,

  31. sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees,

  32. and the wolf snatches them and scatters them.

  33. He flees because he has a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.

  34. I am the good shepherd.

  35. I know my own and my own know me.

  36. Just as the Father knows me and I know the Father,

  37. and I lay down my life for the sheep.

  38. And I have other sheep that are not of this fold.

  39. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice.

  40. So there will be one flock, one shepherd.

  41. For this reason, the Father loves me,

  42. because I lay down my life that I may take it up again.

  43. No one takes it from me,

  44. but I lay it down of my own accord.

  45. I have authority to lay it down,

  46. and I have authority to take it up again.

  47. This charge I have received from my Father.

  48. Oh, in the case that you were just joining us in our study of John's Gospel,

  49. or that you, like me, easily forget details,

  50. I will remind you where we find ourselves in this narrative of Jesus' life.

  51. In chapter 9, Jesus heals a man who was born blind.

  52. This causes confusion and commotion.

  53. So the man is brought before the Pharisees

  54. and put through a series of examinations.

  55. At the conclusion of his interrogation,

  56. the man says, and this is chapter 9, verse 33 and following,

  57. the man says,

  58. Jesus said,

  59. I believe,

  60. I believe,

  61. and he worshipped him.

  62. Jesus said,

  63. For judgment I came into this world,

  64. that those who do not see may see,

  65. and those who see may become blind.

  66. Some of the Pharisees near him heard these things

  67. and said to him,

  68. Are we also blind?

  69. Jesus said to them,

  70. If you were blind,

  71. you would have no guilt.

  72. But now that you say we see,

  73. your guilt remains.

  74. So Jesus,

  75. having healed a blind man of his physical disability

  76. and then,

  77. and more importantly,

  78. of his spiritual disability,

  79. uses the sight language

  80. to expose the prideful Pharisees.

  81. He speaks here with great irony.

  82. It is the men who think they see

  83. who are truly the blind ones.

  84. And it is into this context

  85. that Jesus goes on in chapter 10.

  86. He is speaking to the Pharisees,

  87. blind men who have thrown out of the synagogue

  88. a seeing man,

  89. and he switches from sight language

  90. to hearing language

  91. and a rich shepherding metaphor.

  92. This all is meant to be an indictment

  93. of these men.

  94. Our text last week concluded with verse 6.

  95. I'll just read that again.

  96. This figure of speech Jesus used with them,

  97. but they did not understand

  98. what he was saying to them.

  99. Verse 7 begins,

  100. So Jesus again said to them.

  101. And this transition demands

  102. just a bit of our attention this morning.

  103. Some have suggested that verses 1 through 5

  104. are a parable,

  105. and that the remainder of the chapter

  106. is the explanation of those verses.

  107. Jesus certainly goes on

  108. as a response to their confusion,

  109. but if we try to read all of chapter 10

  110. back into verses 1 through 5,

  111. we will have to force a lot of connections

  112. that I don't believe Jesus or John

  113. meant to communicate.

  114. So we're going to be careful

  115. as we proceed through,

  116. and you may see me not do some things

  117. you'd like for me to do,

  118. because I don't think that's what

  119. they intended for us to do.

  120. Rather, we should read the chapter

  121. as an unfolding metaphor.

  122. The very best, in my opinion,

  123. Greek scholarship on this chapter

  124. suggests that this is the most faithful way

  125. for us to proceed.

  126. So Jesus presses on.

  127. Jesus again said to them

  128. by using a different metaphor

  129. related to what he has just said.

  130. It's not a total departure

  131. to what he's just been speaking about,

  132. but now he's communicating

  133. something additional.

  134. First, he has the shepherd

  135. leading his sheep out

  136. from amongst the other sheep

  137. in the sheepfold.

  138. Now, he is the door

  139. to the sheepfold.

  140. Now, whatever you may think

  141. of Jesus this morning,

  142. whether you understand him

  143. to be the Christ or not,

  144. when he makes such statements

  145. as this,

  146. he demands your attention.

  147. He's saying something

  148. incredibly stark.

  149. Do what you will

  150. with these declarations,

  151. but don't just tune out.

  152. Behold Jesus.

  153. Deal with him honestly,

  154. and I earnestly hope,

  155. accept him on his terms.

  156. Now, to help us do that this morning,

  157. I have a simple outline.

  158. It's three points.

  159. I've tried to make it four.

  160. I hate always being

  161. a three-point preacher.

  162. It seems like I most often am,

  163. but it just didn't work.

  164. So, three points this morning.

  165. Number one,

  166. Jesus, the only door of salvation.

  167. Number two,

  168. Jesus, the exposer of false saviors.

  169. Number three,

  170. Jesus, the way of eternal security

  171. and abundant life.

  172. Number one,

  173. Jesus, the only door of salvation.

  174. We see this in verse seven.

  175. pick up a little bit of verse nine.

  176. So,

  177. Jesus again said to them,

  178. truly, truly,

  179. I say to you,

  180. I am the door of the sheep.

  181. And then verse nine,

  182. he says,

  183. I am the door.

  184. If anyone enters by me,

  185. he will be saved.

  186. In verse seven,

  187. Jesus makes the third

  188. of his seven

  189. I am statements

  190. that John records.

  191. First,

  192. he says,

  193. I am the bread of life

  194. in chapter six.

  195. Then,

  196. I am the light of the world

  197. in chapters eight and nine.

  198. And now,

  199. I am the door

  200. of the sheep

  201. or gate of the sheep.

  202. Your translation may prefer.

  203. These statements

  204. are extraordinarily significant

  205. because the I am phrase

  206. declares Jesus' deity

  207. in relation to God's name

  208. as revealed to Moses

  209. in Exodus chapter three.

  210. Don't miss it.

  211. His hearers totally understood

  212. what he was doing.

  213. We might read right past it.

  214. But that is exactly

  215. what he is doing.

  216. He is declaring

  217. that he is God.

  218. And then,

  219. he's adding some quality

  220. of his deity

  221. to the statement.

  222. He tells us,

  223. I am the door

  224. of the sheep.

  225. The sheep hold up

  226. a place

  227. where a group of families

  228. would bring their flocks

  229. in at night

  230. for protection.

  231. This is most regularly

  232. the case.

  233. A wealthy man

  234. would not have needed

  235. to partner together

  236. to accomplish this.

  237. But most regularly,

  238. little flocks

  239. were brought together

  240. into a safe place,

  241. a common courtyard

  242. or a fenced-in area,

  243. pen, etc.

  244. Last week,

  245. we thought together

  246. about the man

  247. who would be hired

  248. to watch over them

  249. throughout the night,

  250. the gatekeeper

  251. that the shepherd

  252. comes to

  253. to gain admittance

  254. to the sheep.

  255. The gatekeeper

  256. only lets the shepherd

  257. in to take his sheep out.

  258. The sheep hold

  259. would have had

  260. one way in

  261. and that same way

  262. would have served

  263. as the way out.

  264. The common construction

  265. of these structures.

  266. Everybody hearing

  267. Jesus speak

  268. knows exactly

  269. what he means.

  270. As Jesus,

  271. metaphorically,

  272. now presents himself

  273. as that way

  274. in

  275. and that way

  276. out.

  277. Notice that he does not say,

  278. I know where the door is,

  279. nor does he say,

  280. I can show you the door.

  281. He says,

  282. I am the door.

  283. In our previous metaphor,

  284. I spoke about

  285. the sheep being led out

  286. to good pasture

  287. and brought back

  288. into safety

  289. at night

  290. by the shepherd.

  291. This imagery

  292. would have been vivid

  293. for Jesus' listeners,

  294. both because

  295. of their daily experience

  296. in an agrarian economy

  297. and because

  298. their familiarity

  299. with their Bibles.

  300. More importantly,

  301. this is what Jesus

  302. is doing.

  303. doing.

  304. Remember,

  305. these are religious leaders

  306. that Jesus is directly

  307. confronting

  308. and they would have been

  309. familiar with

  310. a text like

  311. Psalm 23.

  312. So last week,

  313. that's what we read

  314. in our scripture reading.

  315. We did it again

  316. this morning.

  317. We're going to do it again

  318. next week.

  319. I intend to do it

  320. all the way through

  321. chapter 10

  322. unless our elders

  323. tell me no.

  324. So you'll be made aware

  325. if that's what happens,

  326. if they tell me no,

  327. which they do

  328. from time to time.

  329. First three verses,

  330. Psalm 23,

  331. The Lord is my shepherd.

  332. I shall not want.

  333. He makes me lie down

  334. in green pastures.

  335. He leads me

  336. beside still waters.

  337. He restores my soul.

  338. He leads me

  339. in paths of righteousness

  340. for His name's sake.

  341. That's what He's laying

  342. before them

  343. in the opening verses

  344. of chapter 10,

  345. but they don't understand Him,

  346. we saw in verse 6.

  347. So now He presents Himself

  348. as the only way

  349. to good pasture

  350. and safe rest

  351. with another metaphor

  352. drawn from the Old Testament.

  353. Jesus is just preaching

  354. the Word to these men.

  355. Psalm 118,

  356. I think you'll appreciate

  357. going there with me

  358. and I'll give you

  359. just a quick second

  360. if you'd like to join me

  361. in verse 19.

  362. Psalm 118,

    Psalms 118:19

  363. verse 19

  364. and following,

  365. we read,

  366. Open to me

  367. the gates

  368. of righteousness

  369. that I may enter

  370. through them

  371. and give thanks

  372. to the Lord.

  373. This is the gate

  374. of the Lord.

  375. The righteous

  376. shall enter through it.

  377. I thank you

  378. that you have answered me

  379. and have become

  380. my salvation.

  381. Now,

  382. if we stop right there,

  383. you might go,

  384. how in the world

  385. does that connect

  386. to anything

  387. that Jesus

  388. is saying here?

  389. So let me show you

  390. by continuing

  391. to read.

  392. I hope this

  393. causes connections

  394. to fire off

  395. in your brain.

  396. Verse 22 says,

  397. The stone

  398. that the builders

  399. rejected

  400. has become

  401. the cornerstone.

  402. This is the Lord's

  403. doing.

  404. It is marvelous

  405. in our eyes.

  406. This is the day

  407. that the Lord

  408. has made.

  409. Let us rejoice

  410. and be glad in it.

  411. I think those verses

  412. are likely

  413. very familiar to you.

  414. Verses 22 through 24,

  415. they're applied

  416. to Jesus.

  417. Matthew 21,

    Matthew 21:42

  418. verse 42,

  419. 2 Peter 2,

  420. and verse 7.

  421. So Psalm 118

  422. is presenting

  423. this rejected stone

  424. by these builders

  425. as the gate

  426. or door

  427. to enter into

  428. the presence

  429. of God.

  430. these men

  431. should have

  432. gotten

  433. this.

  434. Jesus is the gate

  435. of Psalm 118.

  436. There is no

  437. alternative entrance,

  438. no side gate,

  439. no secret passage.

  440. You can't come

  441. tumbling over the wall

  442. and be considered

  443. part of

  444. the flock.

  445. One door,

  446. one means of access.

  447. Jesus says

  448. that He

  449. is

  450. the access.

  451. Every blessing

  452. of God

  453. comes

  454. through Him.

  455. Every promise

  456. of God

  457. comes

  458. through

  459. Him.

  460. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 1 chapter mention

  461. chapter 1

  462. and verse 20,

  463. Paul says,

  464. for all the promises

  465. of God

  466. find their

  467. yes

  468. in Jesus

  469. Christ.

  470. We take up

  471. the word

  472. in any measure

  473. and read

  474. any of God's

  475. promises

  476. and discard

  477. Jesus as the Christ.

  478. None of them

  479. are sure.

  480. If we believe

  481. that Jesus

  482. is the Christ,

  483. then all of them

  484. are sure.

  485. They find

  486. their

  487. yes

  488. in Him.

  489. Every hope

  490. of eternal life

  491. comes through

  492. Jesus.

  493. Every sinner

  494. who enters

  495. God's kingdom

  496. enters

  497. through

  498. Him.

  499. No

  500. other

  501. way.

  502. God

  503. this is

  504. a

  505. God

  506. God

  507. takes

  508. a bit

  509. of time

  510. to think

  511. about.

  512. Our

  513. culture

  514. hates

  515. exclusivity,

  516. hates

  517. absolute

  518. truth claims.

  519. The world

  520. wants us to

  521. think that

  522. all roads

  523. lead to God,

  524. that every

  525. religion is

  526. equally valid.

  527. the world

  528. says that

  529. sincerity

  530. is

  531. enough.

  532. And so

  533. people

  534. make for

  535. themselves

  536. all sorts

  537. of paths

  538. to God

  539. and all

  540. sorts

  541. of

  542. gods.

  543. Everyone

  544. worships

  545. something

  546. or

  547. someone

  548. and the

  549. tide of our

  550. day

  551. mostly rises

  552. to the

  553. worship

  554. of

  555. self,

  556. a bend

  557. toward

  558. self-identity

  559. and self-authority.

  560. my friends,

  561. this

  562. is not

  563. the door.

  564. It's a

  565. wide path

  566. that leads

  567. to destruction.

  568. The way

  569. is narrow

  570. that leads

  571. to eternal

  572. life,

  573. meaning it's

  574. defined.

  575. There's a

  576. way

  577. to God.

  578. Jesus

  579. says

  580. there's

  581. one door

  582. and it's

  583. him.

  584. He is

  585. the entrance

  586. to God.

  587. The

  588. modern

  589. mind

  590. calls

  591. that

  592. narrow.

  593. Jesus

  594. called it

  595. truth.

  596. He just

  597. makes the

  598. claim.

  599. So you

  600. have to

  601. deal with

  602. him and

  603. you have

  604. to deal

  605. with him

  606. on

  607. his

  608. terms.

  609. He's

  610. going to

  611. say later

  612. in

  613. John's

  614. gospel,

  615. chapter 14

  616. and verse

  617. 6,

  618. I am

  619. the way

  620. and the

  621. truth

  622. and the

  623. life.

  624. No one

  625. comes to

  626. the Father

  627. except

  628. through

  629. me.

  630. Peter

  631. will

  632. preach

  633. in Acts

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  634. chapter 4

  635. and verse

  636. 12,

  637. there is

  638. salvation

  639. in no

  640. one

  641. else.

  642. Paul

  643. will

  644. write

  645. in

  646. 1 Timothy

    1 Timothy 2 chapter mention

  647. chapter 2

  648. and verse

  649. 5,

  650. there is

  651. one

  652. mediator

  653. between

  654. God

  655. and

  656. men,

  657. the

  658. man

  659. Christ

  660. Jesus.

  661. The

  662. testimony

  663. of

  664. scripture

  665. is

  666. unmistakable.

  667. There's

  668. one

  669. savior,

  670. one

  671. mediator,

  672. one

  673. redeemer,

  674. one

  675. door,

  676. and that

  677. door

  678. is

  679. Christ.

  680. And

  681. perhaps

  682. someone will

  683. say,

  684. why must

  685. there be

  686. only

  687. one

  688. way?

  689. The

  690. answer is

  691. because

  692. there's

  693. only one

  694. savior,

  695. only one

  696. who fulfilled

  697. God's

  698. law,

  699. only one

  700. sinless

  701. substitute,

  702. only one

  703. who bore

  704. divine

  705. wrath,

  706. only one

  707. who conquered

  708. death,

  709. only one

  710. who rose

  711. from the

  712. grave.

  713. the

  714. New

  715. City

  716. Catechism

  717. question

  718. this

  719. week,

  720. it's

  721. found

  722. in

  723. your

  724. bulletin,

  725. meant

  726. for the

  727. children

  728. really,

  729. but

  730. adults,

  731. we

  732. would

  733. do

  734. well

  735. to

  736. know

  737. these

  738. questions

  739. and

  740. answers.

  741. Question

  742. and answer

  743. 21,

  744. why must

  745. the

  746. redeemer

  747. be

  748. truly

  749. human?

  750. And

  751. the

  752. answer

  753. is

  754. that

  755. in

  756. human

  757. nature

  758. he

  759. might

  760. on

  761. our

  762. behalf

  763. perfectly

  764. obey

  765. the

  766. whole

  767. law

  768. and

  769. suffer

  770. the

  771. punishment

  772. for

  773. human

  774. sin.

  775. If

  776. there

  777. were

  778. another

  779. door,

  780. there

  781. would

  782. need

  783. to

  784. be

  785. another

  786. savior,

  787. another

  788. cross,

  789. another

  790. resurrection.

  791. Our

  792. problem

  793. with

  794. God,

  795. our

  796. failure

  797. to

  798. keep

  799. his

  800. commands

  801. and

  802. the

  803. death

  804. that

  805. is

  806. due

  807. our

  808. failure

  809. is

  810. only

  811. solved

  812. by

  813. faith

  814. in

  815. the

  816. person

  817. and

  818. work

  819. of

  820. Jesus

  821. Christ.

  822. We

  823. need

  824. double

  825. imputation.

  826. We

  827. need

  828. Jesus'

  829. righteousness,

  830. his

  831. perfect

  832. law

  833. giving,

  834. given

  835. to

  836. us,

  837. that

  838. we

  839. would

  840. fulfill

  841. God's

  842. commands

  843. in

  844. him

  845. and

  846. we

  847. need

  848. the

  849. penalty

  850. due

  851. our

  852. sin

  853. taken

  854. away

  855. by

  856. Christ,

  857. our

  858. sinfulness

  859. given

  860. to

  861. him,

  862. he

  863. suffered

  864. and

  865. died

  866. for.

  867. This

  868. is

  869. the

  870. only

  871. way

  872. to

  873. be

  874. brought

  875. back

  876. into

  877. the

  878. presence

  879. of

  880. God.

  881. If

  882. this

  883. presents

  884. to

  885. you

  886. as

  887. an

  888. unfair,

  889. just

  890. consider

  891. that

  892. what

  893. would

  894. be

  895. truly

  896. fair

  897. would

  898. be

  899. the

  900. destruction

  901. of

  902. all

  903. mankind,

  904. immediate

  905. and

  906. final.

  907. There

  908. is only

  909. one way,

  910. but there

  911. is a

  912. way,

  913. praise

  914. be

  915. to

  916. God.

  917. This

  918. should

  919. motivate

  920. faith

  921. in

  922. Jesus

  923. and

  924. it

  925. should

  926. motivate

  927. evangelism

  928. to

  929. the

  930. very

  931. ends

  932. of

  933. the

  934. earth.

  935. Our

  936. God

  937. is

  938. not

  939. unfair,

  940. our

  941. God

  942. is

  943. merciful.

  944. He

  945. has

  946. given

  947. a

  948. message

  949. in

  950. the

  951. personal

  952. work

  953. of

  954. Jesus

  955. Christ

  956. that

  957. we

  958. might

  959. believe

  960. it

  961. and

  962. we

  963. might

  964. share

  965. it

  966. with

  967. others

  968. that

  969. they

  970. might

  971. believe

  972. it

  973. as

  974. well.

  975. One

  976. door

  977. standing

  978. open

  979. come

  980. and

  981. enter

  982. all

  983. who

  984. may.

  985. Jesus

  986. is the

  987. only

  988. door

  989. of

  990. salvation.

  991. Secondly,

  992. Jesus

  993. is the

  994. exposer

  995. of

  996. false

  997. saviors.

  998. We see

  999. this in

  1000. verse 8

  1001. and I'll

  1002. take up

  1003. a little

  1004. bit of

  1005. verse

  1006. 10.

  1007. Verse

  1008. 8

  1009. says

  1010. all

  1011. who

  1012. came

  1013. before

  1014. me

  1015. are

  1016. thieves

  1017. and

  1018. robbers

  1019. but

  1020. the

  1021. sheep

  1022. did

  1023. not

  1024. listen

  1025. to

  1026. them.

  1027. Why

  1028. did

  1029. they

  1030. not

  1031. listen

  1032. to

  1033. them?

  1034. Because

  1035. the

  1036. sheep

  1037. belong

  1038. to

  1039. the

  1040. shepherd.

  1041. They

  1042. know

  1043. his

  1044. voice

  1045. and

  1046. they

  1047. follow

  1048. him.

  1049. And

  1050. then

  1051. verse

  1052. 10

  1053. says

  1054. the

  1055. thief

  1056. comes

  1057. only

  1058. to

  1059. steal

  1060. and

  1061. kill

  1062. and

  1063. destroy.

  1064. The

  1065. language

  1066. in

  1067. these

  1068. verses

  1069. certainly

  1070. carries

  1071. forward

  1072. from

  1073. Jesus'

  1074. previous

  1075. metaphor.

  1076. To

  1077. whom

  1078. is

  1079. Jesus

  1080. referring

  1081. to?

  1082. We

  1083. should

  1084. immediately

  1085. exclude

  1086. some

  1087. who

  1088. came

  1089. before

  1090. him.

  1091. He

  1092. says

  1093. all

  1094. who

  1095. came

  1096. before

  1097. me

  1098. but

  1099. some

  1100. who

  1101. came

  1102. before

  1103. him.

  1104. Like

  1105. Moses

  1106. or

  1107. Isaiah

  1108. or

  1109. Jeremiah

  1110. or

  1111. John

  1112. the

  1113. Baptist

  1114. comes

  1115. to

  1116. my

  1117. mind.

  1118. Elsewhere

  1119. are

  1120. commended

  1121. by

  1122. them

  1123. for

  1124. their

  1125. faithfulness.

  1126. So

  1127. not

  1128. them.

  1129. So

  1130. who?

  1131. Who is

  1132. it that

  1133. he's

  1134. talking

  1135. about?

  1136. Those

  1137. all

  1138. who

  1139. came

  1140. before

  1141. him?

  1142. Last

  1143. week I

  1144. suggested

  1145. that he

  1146. is drawing

  1147. on

  1148. imagery

  1149. employed

  1150. in

  1151. Ezekiel

    Ezekiel 34 chapter mention

  1152. chapter

  1153. 34

  1154. to

  1155. speak

  1156. of

  1157. leaders

  1158. who

  1159. should

  1160. have

  1161. been

  1162. caring

  1163. for

  1164. the

  1165. sheep

  1166. but

  1167. instead

  1168. cared

  1169. for

  1170. their

  1171. own

  1172. gain.

  1173. Like

  1174. spiritual

  1175. leaders

  1176. who

  1177. were

  1178. exploiting

  1179. God's

  1180. people

  1181. and not

  1182. serving

  1183. them.

  1184. So

  1185. those men

  1186. to be

  1187. sure.

  1188. Perhaps

  1189. he is

  1190. suggesting

  1191. those who

  1192. had made

  1193. messianic

  1194. claims

  1195. before

  1196. him.

  1197. If you

  1198. know your

  1199. history,

  1200. others had

  1201. come and

  1202. said they

  1203. were the

  1204. Christ

  1205. and led

  1206. insurrections

  1207. and were

  1208. put down

  1209. by the

  1210. Romans

  1211. who

  1212. showed

  1213. themselves

  1214. not

  1215. to

  1216. be

  1217. the

  1218. Christ.

  1219. So

  1220. perhaps

  1221. them,

  1222. they,

  1223. of course,

  1224. were seeking

  1225. their own

  1226. advantage.

  1227. But all

  1228. of this

  1229. language

  1230. is aimed

  1231. at the

  1232. Pharisees

  1233. he is

  1234. presently

  1235. addressing.

  1236. Those

  1237. he is

  1238. speaking

  1239. to

  1240. here

  1241. most

  1242. certainly

  1243. are

  1244. included

  1245. in

  1246. this

  1247. number.

  1248. In

  1249. Matthew

    Matthew 23 chapter mention

  1250. chapter

  1251. 23,

  1252. the

  1253. list

  1254. of

  1255. woes

  1256. to

  1257. the

  1258. Pharisees,

  1259. there

  1260. are

  1261. seven

  1262. of

  1263. them.

  1264. And the

  1265. first

  1266. one

  1267. says

  1268. this

  1269. beginning

  1270. in

  1271. verse

  1272. 13,

  1273. but

  1274. woe

  1275. to

  1276. you

  1277. scribes

  1278. and

  1279. Pharisees

  1280. hypocrites

  1281. for you

  1282. shut the

  1283. kingdom of

  1284. heaven

  1285. in people's

  1286. faces

  1287. for you

  1288. neither

  1289. enter

  1290. yourselves

  1291. nor

  1292. allow

  1293. those

  1294. who

  1295. would

  1296. enter

  1297. to

  1298. go

  1299. in.

  1300. Woe

  1301. to

  1302. you

  1303. scribes

  1304. and

  1305. Pharisees

  1306. hypocrites

  1307. for you

  1308. travel

  1309. across

  1310. sea

  1311. and

  1312. land

  1313. to

  1314. make

  1315. a

  1316. single

  1317. proselyte

  1318. and

  1319. when

  1320. he

  1321. becomes

  1322. a

  1323. proselyte

  1324. you

  1325. make

  1326. him

  1327. twice

  1328. as

  1329. much

  1330. a

  1331. child

  1332. of

  1333. hell

  1334. as

  1335. yourselves

  1336. false

  1337. shepherding

  1338. not

  1339. leading

  1340. people

  1341. to

  1342. God

  1343. leading

  1344. them

  1345. rather

  1346. astray

  1347. so

  1348. Jesus

  1349. is

  1350. making

  1351. a

  1352. stark

  1353. contrast

  1354. here

  1355. between

  1356. himself

  1357. and

  1358. the

  1359. false

  1360. shepherd

  1361. false

  1362. shepherds

  1363. take

  1364. Christ

  1365. gives

  1366. false

  1367. shepherds

  1368. consume

  1369. Christ

  1370. saves

  1371. false

  1372. shepherds

  1373. destroy

  1374. Christ

  1375. restores

  1376. what an

  1377. indictment

  1378. Jesus

  1379. is making

  1380. against

  1381. these

  1382. Pharisees

  1383. now

  1384. the

  1385. danger

  1386. for

  1387. us

  1388. is

  1389. no

  1390. longer

  1391. first

  1392. century

  1393. Judaism

  1394. but

  1395. false

  1396. shepherds

  1397. do

  1398. still

  1399. exist

  1400. any

  1401. religious

  1402. leader

  1403. who

  1404. diminishes

  1405. Christ

  1406. is a

  1407. thief

  1408. and a

  1409. robber

  1410. any

  1411. system

  1412. that

  1413. adds

  1414. human

  1415. merit

  1416. to

  1417. grace

  1418. is a

  1419. thief

  1420. and a

  1421. robber

  1422. any

  1423. church

  1424. that

  1425. substitutes

  1426. moralism

  1427. for the

  1428. gospel

  1429. is leading

  1430. people

  1431. astray

  1432. the

  1433. prosperity

  1434. preacher

  1435. promising

  1436. earthly

  1437. riches

  1438. as the

  1439. essence

  1440. of God's

  1441. blessing

  1442. is a

  1443. thief

  1444. and a

  1445. robber

  1446. in most

  1447. cases

  1448. quite

  1449. literally

  1450. the

  1451. liberal

  1452. theologian

  1453. denying

  1454. Christ's

  1455. deity

  1456. is a

  1457. thief

  1458. and a

  1459. robber

  1460. the

  1461. secular

  1462. voice

  1463. insisting

  1464. that

  1465. fulfillment

  1466. is found

  1467. apart from

  1468. God

  1469. is also

  1470. a thief

  1471. and a

  1472. robber

  1473. they come

  1474. to steal

  1475. and kill

  1476. and destroy

  1477. they do

  1478. this under

  1479. the command

  1480. of their

  1481. father

  1482. the father

  1483. of lies

  1484. the devil

  1485. who prowls

  1486. around looking

  1487. for someone

  1488. to devour

  1489. every

  1490. false

  1491. savior

  1492. makes promises

  1493. it cannot

  1494. keep

  1495. our age

  1496. seems obsessed

  1497. with looking

  1498. for doors

  1499. that do

  1500. not exist

  1501. people seek

  1502. salvation

  1503. through politics

  1504. through wealth

  1505. through education

  1506. or personal

  1507. success

  1508. through family

  1509. pleasure

  1510. self

  1511. discovery

  1512. yet

  1513. every

  1514. substitute

  1515. ultimately

  1516. collapses

  1517. you hold

  1518. up Christ

  1519. to any

  1520. of these

  1521. things

  1522. and he

  1523. exposes

  1524. them

  1525. as

  1526. false

  1527. our

  1528. hearts

  1529. were made

  1530. for the

  1531. worship

  1532. of God

  1533. you will

  1534. worship

  1535. you were

  1536. designed

  1537. to be

  1538. a worshiper

  1539. you can

  1540. worship

  1541. self

  1542. you can

  1543. worship

  1544. others

  1545. you can

  1546. worship

  1547. stuff

  1548. we were

  1549. made

  1550. to worship

  1551. God

  1552. and only

  1553. Jesus

  1554. grants us

  1555. access

  1556. to that

  1557. worship

  1558. Augustine

  1559. famously

  1560. said

  1561. quote

  1562. our hearts

  1563. are restless

  1564. until they

  1565. find their

  1566. rest

  1567. in thee

  1568. you're

  1569. missing

  1570. satisfaction

  1571. for your

  1572. heart

  1573. it's found

  1574. in God

  1575. through Christ

  1576. so Jesus

  1577. is the only

  1578. door of

  1579. salvation

  1580. Jesus

  1581. is the

  1582. exposer

  1583. of false

  1584. saviors

  1585. and thirdly

  1586. Jesus

  1587. is the

  1588. way

  1589. of

  1590. eternal

  1591. security

  1592. and

  1593. abundant

  1594. life

  1595. this of

  1596. course

  1597. plays off

  1598. of the

  1599. fact

  1600. that he's

  1601. the only

  1602. door

  1603. of

  1604. salvation

  1605. we see

  1606. in verse

  1607. nine

  1608. and then

  1609. the last

  1610. part

  1611. of verse

  1612. ten

  1613. he says

  1614. I am

  1615. the door

  1616. if anyone

  1617. enters

  1618. by me

  1619. he will

  1620. be saved

  1621. and will

  1622. go in

  1623. and out

  1624. and find

  1625. pasture

  1626. verse ten

  1627. the thief

  1628. comes only

  1629. to steal

  1630. and kill

  1631. and destroy

  1632. and then in

  1633. juxtaposition

  1634. he says

  1635. I came

  1636. that they

  1637. may have

  1638. life

  1639. and have

  1640. it

  1641. abundantly

  1642. if we

  1643. place our

  1644. faith

  1645. in Jesus

  1646. the door

  1647. if we

  1648. enter

  1649. by him

  1650. note

  1651. note what

  1652. it says

  1653. we

  1654. the text

  1655. says he

  1656. will

  1657. be

  1658. saved

  1659. we come

  1660. through

  1661. Jesus

  1662. there's a

  1663. promise

  1664. here

  1665. we

  1666. will

  1667. be

  1668. saved

  1669. Paul

  1670. states

  1671. it

  1672. similarly

  1673. in Romans

  1674. chapter

  1675. ten

  1676. verse

  1677. nine

  1678. if you

  1679. confess

  1680. with your

  1681. mouth

  1682. that Jesus

  1683. is Lord

  1684. and believe

  1685. in your

  1686. heart

  1687. that God

  1688. raised him

  1689. from the

  1690. dead

  1691. you

  1692. will

  1693. be

  1694. saved

  1695. and having

  1696. been saved

  1697. you will

  1698. go in

  1699. and out

  1700. and find

  1701. pasture

  1702. there are

  1703. phrases

  1704. in this

  1705. chapter

  1706. that just

  1707. deserve a

  1708. lifetime

  1709. of

  1710. meditation

  1711. you will

  1712. go in

  1713. and out

  1714. and find

  1715. pasture

  1716. to borrow

  1717. from the

  1718. previous

  1719. metaphor

  1720. the security

  1721. of the

  1722. sheep

  1723. rests

  1724. not in

  1725. the sheep

  1726. fold

  1727. but in

  1728. the shepherd

  1729. this is

  1730. what makes

  1731. them safe

  1732. the phrase

  1733. go in

  1734. and out

  1735. communicates

  1736. safety

  1737. and it

  1738. communicates

  1739. freedom

  1740. in the

  1741. ancient

  1742. world

  1743. security

  1744. was

  1745. precious

  1746. I know

  1747. the men

  1748. in our

  1749. church

  1750. we think

  1751. about

  1752. securing

  1753. our

  1754. homes

  1755. we put

  1756. in

  1757. measures

  1758. for that

  1759. we have

  1760. lights

  1761. and

  1762. doorbell

  1763. cameras

  1764. and

  1765. munitions

  1766. nearby

  1767. nothing like

  1768. they had to

  1769. think about

  1770. though

  1771. wild animals

  1772. are not

  1773. breaking

  1774. into our

  1775. homes

  1776. we don't

  1777. have

  1778. bands

  1779. of

  1780. marauders

  1781. coming

  1782. on their

  1783. camels

  1784. to

  1785. raid our

  1786. camp

  1787. security

  1788. was

  1789. precious

  1790. this

  1791. idea

  1792. of

  1793. safety

  1794. in the

  1795. sheep

  1796. fold

  1797. because

  1798. the

  1799. shepherd

  1800. is

  1801. caring

  1802. for

  1803. them

  1804. was

  1805. a

  1806. big

  1807. big

  1808. deal

  1809. it would

  1810. do well

  1811. to

  1812. stop

  1813. and

  1814. meditate

  1815. and

  1816. think

  1817. about

  1818. what it

  1819. means

  1820. to

  1821. truly

  1822. be

  1823. safe

  1824. and not

  1825. just

  1826. temporally

  1827. I mean

  1828. spiritually

  1829. to move

  1830. freely

  1831. without

  1832. fear

  1833. was a

  1834. great

  1835. sign

  1836. of

  1837. peace

  1838. good

  1839. pasture

  1840. and

  1841. secure

  1842. rest

  1843. is what

  1844. is offered

  1845. by faith

  1846. in Jesus

  1847. the door

  1848. of the

  1849. sheep

  1850. the sheep

  1851. will go

  1852. in and

  1853. out

  1854. and they

  1855. will

  1856. find

  1857. pasture

  1858. sustenance

  1859. for their

  1860. souls

  1861. Jesus

  1862. promises

  1863. that as

  1864. people are

  1865. safe

  1866. under

  1867. his

  1868. care

  1869. not

  1870. safe

  1871. from

  1872. hardship

  1873. loss

  1874. suffering

  1875. persecution

  1876. but

  1877. safe

  1878. from

  1879. ultimate

  1880. final

  1881. destruction

  1882. safe

  1883. from

  1884. condemnation

  1885. secure

  1886. he calls

  1887. the sheep

  1888. out

  1889. the sheep

  1890. know his

  1891. voice

  1892. they go

  1893. through the

  1894. door

  1895. they belong

  1896. to him

  1897. eternally

  1898. secure

  1899. but not

  1900. only are

  1901. we safe

  1902. we are

  1903. also

  1904. given

  1905. abundant

  1906. life

  1907. the language

  1908. here suggests

  1909. life that

  1910. is overflowing

  1911. it's beyond

  1912. measure

  1913. with goodness

  1914. but I've just

1915. said that we are not

  1916. safe from hardship

  1917. or loss

  1918. or suffering

  1919. or persecution

  1920. so

  1921. by what

  1922. standard

  1923. by what

  1924. standard

  1925. is our

  1926. life

  1927. abundant

  1928. to answer

  1929. that question

  1930. I think

  1931. we will be

  1932. helped

  1933. by first

  1934. hearing

  1935. Jesus'

  1936. definition

  1937. of eternal

  1938. life

  1939. John records

  1940. this in

  1941. chapter 17

  1942. verse 3

  1943. this is

  1944. eternal

  1945. life

  1946. significant

  1947. all of our

  1948. minds go to

  1949. time

  1950. we go to

  1951. span

  1952. when we

  1953. think about

  1954. eternal

  1955. life

  1956. but this

  1957. is what

  1958. Jesus

  1959. says

  1960. this is

  1961. eternal

  1962. life

  1963. that they

  1964. know you

  1965. the only

  1966. true God

  1967. and Jesus

  1968. Christ

  1969. whom you

  1970. have sent

  1971. life now

  1972. and forever

  1973. more

  1974. knowing

  1975. and being

  1976. known

  1977. by the

  1978. God

  1979. that

  1980. is

  1981. eternal

  1982. life

  1983. life

  1984. now

  1985. and forever

  1986. knowing

  1987. and being

  1988. known

  1989. by God

  1990. so

  1991. abundant

  1992. life

  1993. is the

  1994. daily

  1995. experience

  1996. of the

  1997. promises

  1998. and power

  1999. and presence

  2000. of God

  2001. himself

  2002. being his

  2003. sheep

  2004. he's being

  2005. led

  2006. in and

  2007. out

  2008. to the

  2009. safety of

  2010. the sheep

  2011. fold

  2012. and to

  2013. good

  2014. pasture

  2015. it's

  2016. abiding

  2017. with him

  2018. this is

  2019. the offer

  2020. of the

  2021. good news

  2022. of Jesus

  2023. Christ

  2024. the only

  2025. door of

  2026. salvation

  2027. who exposes

  2028. false

  2029. saviors

  2030. that by

  2031. trusting in

  2032. him

  2033. we would be

  2034. eternally

  2035. secure

  2036. and have

  2037. him

  2038. as our

  2039. eternal

  2040. reward

  2041. in closing

  2042. I want to

  2043. read to you

  2044. a brief

  2045. quote from

  2046. D.A.

  2047. Carson's

  2048. commentary

  2049. on this

  2050. text

  2051. he said

  2052. quote

  2053. within the

  2054. metaphorical

  2055. world

  2056. life

  2057. abundantly

  2058. suggests

  2059. fat

  2060. contented

  2061. flourishing

  2062. sheep

  2063. not

  2064. terrorized

  2065. brigands

  2066. which is a

  2067. word means

  2068. part of the

  2069. game

  2070. not terrorized

  2071. brigands

  2072. outside the

  2073. narrative world

  2074. it means

  2075. that the

  2076. life

  2077. Jesus'

  2078. true

  2079. disciples

  2080. enjoy

  2081. is not

  2082. to be

  2083. construed

  2084. as more

  2085. time to

  2086. fill

  2087. catching that

  2088. not

  2089. not merely

  2090. talking about

  2091. everlasting

  2092. life

  2093. not to be

  2094. construed

  2095. as more

  2096. time to

  2097. fill

  2098. but

  2099. life

  2100. at its

  2101. scarcely

  2102. imagined

  2103. best

  2104. I like that

  2105. phrase

  2106. but life

  2107. at its

  2108. scarcely

  2109. imagined

  2110. best

  2111. experience

  2112. and the

  2113. promises

  2114. and power

  2115. and presence

  2116. of God

  2117. himself

  2118. life

  2119. to be

  2120. lived

  2121. end quote

  2122. let's pray

  2123. together
