  1. Well, good morning, if I haven't already said so to you.

  2. For some scheduling reasons, I needed to fill a one week gap in our preaching schedule.

  3. ! And so, I would like to speak with you about a topic that has been on my mind on repeat lately.

  4. Ambition.

  5. Is it okay to be ambitious, to desire to achieve?

  6. The Puritan Thomas Brooks once called ambition, quote, a gilded misery, a secret poison, end quote.

  7. Scripture often agrees, warning against selfish ambition that breeds conceit and disorder and vile practices.

  8. Philippians 2.3, James chapter 3.

    James 3 chapter mention

  9. However, the Apostle Paul states that he was himself ambitious.

  10. In Romans chapter 15, verse 20, he declares,

    Romans 15:20

  11. I make it my ambition to preach the gospel.

  12. So, where's the balance?

  13. If ungodly ambition is characterized by conceit, disorder, and vile practices, what characterizes godly ambition?

  14. I want to do my best to answer that question by considering Nehemiah's godly ambition.

  15. So, will you join me at the beginning of the book of Nehemiah?

  16. And turn there with me in your Bible, and I'll pray for our time together.

  17. Father, we ask this morning as we take up your word and think about this idea of ambition,

  18. that we would rightly think about what godly ambition is.

  19. That you'd help us to learn from your word without error.

  20. We would rightly apply what it says to us in our lives.

  21. That we would honor the Lord Christ in our time together.

  22. We pray this in his name.

  23. Amen.

  24. I find we, myself included, are often far too ignorant of the books of the Old Testament.

  25. I once heard a pastor tell the following story.

  26. Quote,

  27. A preacher made the mistake of showing two boys the text he would be preaching from that Sunday, the previous Saturday afternoon.

  28. When he turned his back, the boys glued some of the pages of his Bible together.

  29. So, on Sunday, when he stood to read, he read,

  30. And Noah, when he was 120 years old, took unto himself a wife, who was, then turning the page,

  31. 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high, built of gopher wood and pitch within and without.

  32. Puzzled, he paused, read it again, and then looked up at his congregation and said,

  33. I have read the Bible through many, many times, but this is the first time I have ever read this.

  34. Yet I believe the Bible to be true from cover to cover, so I accept it as truth that we are fearfully and wonderfully made.

  35. Perhaps we ought to be a bit more familiar with the text than this.

  36. So, as we peel apart the pages of Nehemiah, let me give you some brief background that will be necessary for our study this morning.

  37. The book of Nehemiah takes place near the end of the Old Testament story.

  38. It's not ordered that way in our modern Bibles, but that's where it takes place chronologically.

  39. More than a century earlier, the Babylonians had destroyed Jerusalem, burned the temples, tore down the walls, and carried the people of Judah into exile.

  40. By Nehemiah's day, the Near East power had shifted to the Persians.

  41. There are some Israelites still in the land.

  42. Some have returned.

  43. The temple had been rebuilt.

  44. We read about that in the book of Ezra.

  45. But the city still lay exposed.

  46. Its walls still broken down.

  47. Its gates were burned.

  48. And God's people who were in the land lived in shame and reproach.

  49. Around 445 BC, Nehemiah was serving as cupbearer to Artaxerxes, the king of Persia.

  50. When he heard about Jerusalem's condition, he wept, fasted, prayed, and acted.

  51. Nehemiah ambitiously sought to remedy a problem.

  52. We will note in just a moment why this news was so troubling to him as we consider the first and most important characteristic of godly ambition.

  53. And I have five for you this morning from the story of Nehemiah.

  54. Now, first and most important foundational godly ambition seeks God's glory.

  55. Look at chapter 1, beginning in verse 1.

  56. The words of Nehemiah, the son of Hakala, something like that.

  57. Now, it happened in the month of Chislev in the 20th year, as I was in Susa, the citadel, that Hanani, one of my brothers, came with certain men from Judah.

  58. And I asked them concerning the Jews who escaped, who had survived the exile, and concerning Jerusalem.

  59. And they said to me, the remnant there in the province who had survived the exile is in great trouble and shame.

  60. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates are destroyed by fire.

  61. As soon as I heard these words, I sat down and wept and mourned for days.

  62. And I continued fasting and praying before the God of heaven.

  63. And I said, O Lord God of heaven, the great and awesome God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments.

  64. Let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear the prayer of your servant that I now pray before you day and night for the people of Israel, your servants.

  65. Confessing the sins of the people of Israel, which we have sinned against you.

  66. Even I and my father's house have sinned.

  67. We have acted very corruptly against you and have not kept the commandments, the statutes, and the rules that you commanded your servant Moses.

  68. Remember the word that you commanded your servant Moses, saying, if you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the peoples.

  69. But if you return to me and keep my commandments and do them, though your outcasts are in the uttermost parts of the earth,

  70. from there I will gather them and bring them to the place that I have chosen to make my name dwell there.

  71. Now I'm going to pause for a second at the end of verse 9.

  72. He says at the beginning of verse 8, remember to God.

  73. Of course God remembers, but God is very pleased when we pray to him, his promises.

  74. So what he prays is an amalgamation, but a clear place you can find it is in Leviticus chapter 26.

    Leviticus 26 chapter mention

  75. I'll begin reading in 38 and then following.

  76. There God says, and you shall perish among the nations and the land of your enemies shall eat you up.

  77. And those of you who are left shall rot away in your enemies lands because of their iniquity and also because of the iniquities of their fathers.

  78. They shall rot away like them.

  79. But if they confess their iniquity and the iniquity of their fathers in their treachery and they that they committed against me and also in walking contrary to me,

  80. so that I walked contrary to them and brought them into the land of their enemies, if then their uncircumcised heart is humbled and they make amends for their iniquity,

  81. then I will remember my covenant with Jacob and I will remember my covenant with Isaac and my covenant with Abraham.

  82. And I will remember the land.

  83. So Nehemiah is biblically informed, right here.

  84. He's praying back to God a promise that God had made.

  85. And then first 10 back in Nehemiah chapter one.

  86. They are your servants and your people whom you have redeemed by your great power and by your strong hand.

  87. Oh, Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of your servant and to the prayer of your servants who delight to fear your name.

  88. And give success to your servant today and grant him mercy in the sight of this man.

  89. Referring to the king, Artaxerxes.

  90. Now I was cup bearer to the king.

  91. Why is Nehemiah distressed by this news that he hears?

  92. Because the people who are in the land and those who have returned to the land, God's people, the remnant there in the province.

  93. Are not doing well.

  94. They're in great trouble and shame.

  95. Jerusalem is in shambles and cannot provide protection for dwelling and commerce.

  96. And therefore, in Nehemiah's correct estimation, God's glory was being profaned.

  97. Now, before you think for a moment that the aim of our time is to convince you to build something, let me be clear.

  98. That is not what I'm hoping to accomplish this morning.

  99. I will not roll out blueprints at the end of our time together.

  100. Under the old covenant, the glory of God was directly tied to the well-being of his people.

  101. Come and see, cries the old covenant.

  102. Go and tell, cries the new.

  103. However, ambitious people build things.

  104. Families, businesses, communities, cultures, and yes, churches, which do meet in buildings.

  105. Godly ambition does so for the glory of God.

  106. This is the great concern of Nehemiah, the heartbreak.

  107. Not just that his fellow Israelites are not doing well, but that God's glory is being profaned.

  108. Godly ambition seeks to make little of self, to forget self, and to make much of God.

  109. Notice the foundation of Nehemiah's concern, right?

  110. He knows his Bible, and he knows the promises that God has made.

  111. Promises that he seems to not be keeping.

  112. Nehemiah prays with confidence because he knows that God is a promise-keeping God who is zealous for his glory.

  113. Even as he grieves the condition, he goes to God in prayer because he knows that God cares about his glory.

  114. This is the most foundational characteristic of godly ambition.

  115. Nothing else I will say this morning matters if we don't get this one right.

  116. If our ambitions don't aim at God's glory, they are misguided and they are trivial.

  117. Often, our ambitions mirror the world's aimed at success, security, significance.

  118. But scripture calls us to aim higher.

  119. 2 Corinthians 5, verse 9.

    2 Corinthians 5:9

  120. So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please God.

  121. As C.S. Lewis once said in your bulletin quote,

  122. Aim at heaven and you will get earth thrown in.

  123. Aim at earth and you will get neither.

  124. Ungodly ambition is not too big.

  125. It is too small.

  126. As concerns ambition, we can err in two ways.

  127. First, which has been mentioned, ambition can be self-serving and not seek God's glory.

  128. It can be about our glory.

  129. But also, secondly, it could just be altogether lacking.

  130. No ambition whatsoever.

  131. However, I think apathy is the opposite of ambition.

  132. No concern.

  133. May we not be apathetic on the one hand or have selfish ambition on the other,

  134. but be energized to see God magnified in everything that we do.

  135. Godly ambition, firstly and most importantly, seeks God's glory.

  136. Secondly, godly ambition thinks and asks big.

  137. Thinks and asks big.

  138. I am saying to you that we ought to be ambitious

  139. and that that ambition ought to be aimed at God's glory

  140. and therefore it ought to think and ask big.

  141. Now look with me at the beginning of chapter two of Nehemiah.

  142. Here we see recorded in the month of Nisan in the 20th year of King Artaxerxes.

  143. When wine was before him, I took up the wine and gave it to the king.

  144. Now I had not been sad in his presence.

  145. And the king said to me, why is your face sad?

  146. Seeing you are not sick.

  147. This is nothing but sadness of the heart.

  148. Then I was very much afraid.

  149. It's not supposed to appear sad for the king.

  150. He seems to have made every effort not to appear sad before the king.

  151. His own record is that he had not been sad in his presence

  152. and the king sees through it.

  153. And he was afraid for the way his countenance was before the king.

  154. Verse three, I said to the king, let the king live forever.

  155. Why should not my face be sad when the city, the place of my father's graves,

  156. lies in ruins and its gates have been destroyed by fire?

  157. Then the king said to me, what are you requesting?

  158. So I prayed to the God of heaven.

  159. And I said to the king, if it pleases the king

  160. and if your servant has found favor in your sight,

  161. that you send me to Judah, to the city of my father's graves,

  162. that I may rebuild it.

  163. And the king said to me, the queen sitting beside him,

  164. how long will you be gone and when will you return?

  165. So it pleased the king to send me when I had given him a time.

  166. And I said to the king, if it pleases the king,

  167. let letters be given to me,

  168. to the governors of the province beyond the river,

  169. that they let me pass through until I come to Judah.

  170. And a letter to Asaph, the keeper of the king's forest,

  171. that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the fortress of the temple

  172. and for the wall of the city and for the house that I shall occupy.

  173. And the king granted me what I asked,

  174. for the good hand of God was upon me.

  175. I believe that we are meant to note the date in verse 1,

  176. as we were also told the date in chapter 1 and verse 1.

  177. Chislev or Kislev to Nisan.

  178. About four months have passed from the time that Nehemiah received the news

  179. of Jerusalem's state until we see this encounter in chapter 2.

  180. Four months have gone by since in verse 4 of chapter 1.

  181. He says,

  182. As soon as I heard these words,

  183. I sat down and wept and mourned for days.

  184. Four months worth of days.

  185. And I continued fasting and praying before the God of heaven.

  186. The conclusion I believe we ought to draw

  187. is that Nehemiah has been troubled all this time.

  188. He has been in mourning and fasting with prayer.

  189. The prayer of chapter 1 is an example prayer of the prayers that he prayed.

  190. It was the substance of what he was praying across this time.

  191. And I think that during this time,

  192. he has considered a remedy to the problem.

  193. He is troubled by this.

  194. How might this trouble be solved?

  195. The confidence of Nehemiah's prayers expresses confidence

  196. in a God who can accomplish whatever he desires.

  197. But Nehemiah's actions evidence that he knows

  198. that God doesn't despise the means used to accomplish his will.

  199. Nehemiah thinks big.

  200. I'm imagining here, but in this time frame,

  201. I think he's going,

  202. maybe I should go lead the rebuilding of the wall.

  203. The rebuilding of the wall around Jerusalem was a massive task.

  204. The wall was 1.7 miles in circumference.

  205. It was 6 1⁄2 to 12 feet thick,

  206. depending on the place of it,

  207. and an estimated 20 to 25 feet high.

  208. This is a huge, huge project.

  209. There is no natural reason for Nehemiah to think

  210. that he would be the instrument of God's choosing

  211. to rebuild Jerusalem's walls.

  212. He's not a builder of walls.

  213. That's not what the chapter tells us at all.

  214. That's not what he was trained to do.

  215. He's a cupbearer.

  216. He's been living in captivity.

  217. He's the servant to King Artaxerxes.

  218. He selects wine,

  219. and he drinks from the king's cup before the king

  220. to ensure his wine hadn't been poisoned.

  221. This is the role that he played.

  222. He is trusted as the cupbearer.

  223. Often throughout history,

  224. cupbearers gave counsel to the king

  225. because they were always around,

  226. because they were giving their life,

  227. perhaps for the sake of his.

  228. Sometimes the question would be asked,

  229. what should I do in such and such circumstance?

  230. So he is there.

  231. He is trusted.

  232. He is in a position to speak to the king,

  233. but he is just a cupbearer, a servant.

  234. Why does it enter his mind

  235. that he could have this kind of ambition

  236. to go back,

  237. to ask that God would restore the wall,

  238. and I'm saying perhaps use him to accomplish it?

  239. It's because of his confidence in this God, right,

  240. who upholds his own glory,

  241. and we cannot know exactly what's going on

  242. in the mind of Nehemiah, right?

  243. Again, I think it's imagination here,

  244. but I do think it's reasonable to think

  245. that he, being troubled by the news,

  246. being persistent in prayer,

  247. is convinced in that process

  248. that given the opportunity

  249. that he should act.

  250. I believe that he asks big things of God,

  251. and then, when the time is right,

  252. big things of the king.

  253. He asks massive things of this king.

  254. The king says to him in verse two,

  255. why is your face sad,

  256. seeing you are not sick?

  257. This is nothing but sadness of the heart.

  258. Then I was very much afraid.

  259. I mentioned already,

  260. this was not okay to be in front of the king forlorn.

  261. So what does he do?

  262. He responds,

  263. the city is destroyed.

  264. Why should I not be sad?

  265. And the king asks him,

  266. what are you requesting?

  267. And notice what he does in verse four,

  268. so I prayed to the God of heaven.

  269. I just imagine as he goes,

  270. Lord, help me.

  271. I'm about to open my mouth,

  272. and I'm going to ask for something big of this king,

  273. a thing that the king could have lopped his head off for.

  274. If it pleases the king,

  275. verse five,

  276. if your servant has found favor in your sight,

  277. let me go.

  278. Let me go rebuild the wall.

  279. And not only does he request to be freed

  280. from his duty to the king,

  281. but also for an armed guard

  282. and a blank check

  283. to gain the resources that he needs for the project.

  284. It is a huge ask.

  285. That's ambitious.

  286. Charles Spurgeon once said,

  287. this is the quote on the children's bulletin section

  288. of your bulletin.

  289. A little drawing that's there.

  290. He once said,

  291. prayer pulls the rope below

  292. and the great bell rings above in the ears of God.

  293. Some scarcely stir the bell

  294. for they pray so languidly.

  295. Others give but an occasional pluck at the rope.

  296. But he who wins heaven

  297. is the man who grasps the rope boldly

  298. and pulls continuously

  299. with all his might.

  300. Do we think and ask big?

  301. Are we ambitious for the glory of God

  302. in all the areas of our life?

  303. Let's not just ask that God would save our children.

  304. I hope we do.

  305. But that he would save them

  306. and that he would shape them

  307. into mighty citizens of the kingdom of heaven

  308. for his glory.

  309. Let's not just ask that God would bless

  310. the work of our hands,

  311. but that he would bless abundantly our labors

  312. that we should spend and be spent for his glory.

  313. Let's not just ask that God would give our church influence

  314. in our homes and in our neighborhoods,

  315. but that he would give us

  316. a little feeble group of people

  317. that he would use us

  318. to have a measurable influence

  319. for generations

  320. and to the very ends of the earth.

  321. Let's be ambitious for his glory.

  322. Think and ask big.

  323. Godly ambition seeks God's glory.

  324. Godly ambition thinks and asks big.

  325. And thirdly,

  326. godly ambition plans diligently.

  327. Notice verses 11 through 16 of chapter two.

  328. So I went up to Jerusalem

  329. and was there three days.

  330. Then I arose in the night

  331. and a few men with me

  332. and I told no one like God

  333. to put in my heart to do for Jerusalem.

  334. There was no animal with me

  335. but the one on which I rode.

  336. I went out by night

  337. by the valley gate

  338. to the dragon spring

  339. and to the dung gate

  340. and I inspected the walls of Jerusalem

  341. that were broken down

  342. and its gates

  343. that had been destroyed by fire.

  344. Then I went on to the fountain gate

  345. and to the king's pool

  346. but there was no room

  347. for the animal

  348. that was under me to pass.

  349. Then I went up in the night

  350. by the valley

  351. and inspected the wall

  352. and I turned back

  353. and entered by the valley gate

  354. and so returned.

  355. And the officials did not know

  356. where I had gone

  357. or what I was doing

  358. and I had not yet told the Jews,

  359. the priests,

  360. the nobles,

  361. the officials,

  362. and the rest

  363. who were to do the work.

  364. Notice the repetition

  365. in verses 12 and 13 and 15.

  366. Then I arose in the night.

  367. I went out by night.

  368. Then I went up in the night.

  369. I take this to mean

  370. that the three days

  371. mentioned in verse 11

  372. was the time it took

  373. for him to inspect the wall.

  374. It would not take three nights

  375. to travel 1.7 miles

  376. around the circumference

  377. of the dilapidated wall.

  378. So what is he doing?

  379. I believe he is making

  380. diligent plans.

  381. He's looking at each section.

  382. He's plotting out

  383. a course of action.

  384. Now let me say again,

  385. God who created the world

  386. ex nihilo from nothing

  387. does not despise means.

  388. He uses his people

  389. to accomplish his purposes.

  390. So once we have ascertained a path,

  391. godly ambition plans diligently.

  392. Sees a destination

  393. and makes a plan

  394. to reach that destination.

  395. I have found

  396. that I accomplished

  397. nothing meaningful

  398. without planning to do so.

  399. I never bumble my way

  400. through the right thing.

  401. We do well not to ask,

  402. what do I feel like doing?

  403. But rather,

  404. what am I supposed to do?

  405. We will not be able

  406. to answer that question

  407. without a plan.

  408. Whatever the ambition may be,

  409. how will you accomplish

  410. that godly ambition?

  411. What is the path

  412. to get there?

  413. Men,

  414. I know that right now

  415. you feel like you're surviving

  416. with littles in your home.

  417. Those days are coming

  418. to a completion

  419. sooner

  420. than you think.

  421. What is the plan

  422. to raise up your children

  423. in the fear

  424. and instruction

  425. of the Lord?

  426. I never do well

  427. when I'm bumbling

  428. my way through it.

  429. Plan,

  430. follow through.

  431. How do you intend

  432. to accomplish

  433. the goals at your job?

  434. Witnessing to your neighbors.

  435. Any of these things

  436. require diligent planning.

  437. So godly ambition

  438. seeks God's glory,

  439. thinks and asks big,

  440. plans diligently.

  441. Fourthly,

  442. godly ambition

  443. works hard.

  444. Nehemiah chapter 2,

    Nehemiah 2:17

  445. verse 17 and 18.

  446. Then I said to them,

  447. following his inspection

  448. and his diligent planning,

  449. you see the trouble

  450. we are in,

  451. how Jerusalem lies

  452. in ruins

  453. with its gates burned?

  454. Come,

  455. let us build

  456. the wall of Jerusalem

  457. that we may no longer

  458. suffer derision.

  459. And I told them

  460. of the hand of my God

  461. that had been upon me

  462. for good

  463. and also of the words

  464. that the king

  465. had spoken to me.

  466. And they said,

  467. let us rise up

  468. and build.

  469. So they strengthened

  470. their hands

  471. for the good work.

  472. Now,

  473. I don't know exactly

  474. what that phrase means.

  475. There may be somebody

  476. who knows their Hebrew

  477. better than I do.

  478. It doesn't seem to me

  479. like they go to work up

  480. some calluses

  481. on their hands,

  482. but they're making a decision.

  483. They're strengthening

  484. their hands.

  485. They're getting ready.

  486. There's a big work

  487. ahead of us.

  488. We will be ready

  489. for that work

  490. to be accomplished.

  491. And then Nehemiah chapter 3,

    Nehemiah 3 chapter mention

  492. which is a summary

  493. of the builders

  494. and their accomplishments.

  495. You get this list

  496. of all of these

  497. different people,

  498. a bunch of different names

  499. that are very difficult

  500. to pronounce.

  501. I'm just going to read

  502. a few of them for you.

  503. Here's what they accomplished.

  504. Here's the work

  505. that they set themselves

  506. to beginning

  507. in verse 15

  508. of chapter 3.

  509. And Shalom,

  510. the son of Kol Hosei,

  511. ruler of the district

  512. of Mizpah,

  513. repaired the fountain gate.

  514. He rebuilt it

  515. and covered it

  516. and set its doors,

  517. its bolts,

  518. and its bars.

  519. And he built the wall

  520. of the pool of Shalah,

  521. of the king's garden,

  522. as far as the stairs

  523. that go down

  524. from the city of David.

  525. After him,

  526. Nehemiah,

  527. the son of Azbuk,

  528. ruler of half the district

  529. of Beth-zur,

  530. repaired to a point

  531. opposite the tombs of David,

  532. as far as the artificial pool

  533. and as far as the house

  534. of the mighty men.

  535. And it goes on

  536. and it goes on

  537. for the entirety

  538. of the chapter.

  539. This is many hands

  540. at hard work,

  541. resetting massive stones

  542. and beams.

  543. You have heard it said,

  544. many hands make light work.

  545. We like to adapt

  546. that saying to say,

  547. many hands make

  548. ambitious work possible.

  549. We would do well

  550. not to underestimate

  551. the difficulty

  552. of this task

  553. that they set themselves to.

  554. These men, though,

  555. had godly ambition.

  556. They saw God's favor

  557. on Nehemiah.

  558. They said,

  559. surely the Lord

  560. is with us

  561. in this work

  562. and so we will

  563. work hard.

  564. We're going to wait around

  565. for the stones

  566. to levitate themselves

  567. and the wall to appear.

  568. They went to work.

  569. They were seeking

  570. God's glory,

  571. thought of a task

  572. worth accomplishing,

  573. right?

  574. So they strengthened

  575. their hands

  576. for the good work.

  577. They had Nehemiah's plans

  578. and his oversight

  579. and they took up

  580. their part

  581. of the work.

  582. Not one man

  583. built the entire wall.

  584. They shared

  585. in this large task.

  586. In total,

  587. it only took them

  588. 52 days

  589. to rebuild

  590. the wall.

  591. What a work

  592. that was.

  593. What might be accomplished

  594. if you

  595. strengthened

  596. your hands

  597. for a good

  598. work?

  599. what might you

  600. see

  601. get done?

  602. What might

  603. we

  604. be able

  605. to build?

  606. Godly ambition

  607. seeks God's glory,

  608. thinks and asks

  609. big,

  610. plans diligently,

  611. works

  612. hard,

  613. and lastly,

  614. expects

  615. opposition.

  616. Expects

  617. opposition.

  618. There's a common

  619. sentiment

  620. in today's church

  621. that seems

  622. averse

  623. to opposition.

  624. It seems

  625. to be framed

  626. up theologically

  627. like God

  628. couldn't possibly

  629. ask us to do

  630. anything hard.

  631. If we encounter

  632. some difficulty,

  633. perhaps we have

  634. strayed from God's

  635. will,

  636. goes the thinking.

  637. Just because

  638. something is difficult

  639. doesn't make it right.

  640. But I can attest

  641. that everything

  642. good that I've

  643. ever seen

  644. accomplished

  645. was accomplished

  646. with difficulty.

  647. there were

  648. oppositions.

  649. There were

  650. things that

  651. could have

  652. shut the

  653. whole work

  654. down if

  655. people weren't

  656. willing to

  657. push through.

  658. Beloved,

  659. you sit in a

  660. congregation this

  661. morning that

  662. would not

  663. exist

  664. if countless

  665. people,

  666. including you,

  667. didn't work

  668. hard in the

  669. face of

  670. opposition.

  671. Nehemiah

  672. faced opposition.

  673. They expected

  674. it and they

  675. put themselves

  676. to the work

  677. all the

  678. same.

  679. This

  680. opposition is

  681. introduced to

  682. us in chapter

  683. two.

  684. The weight

  685. of this

  686. opposition

  687. verses nine

  688. and ten.

  689. He says,

  690. then I came

  691. to the

  692. governors of

  693. the province

  694. beyond the

  695. river and

  696. gave them

  697. the king's

  698. letters.

  699. Now the

  700. king had

  701. sent with

  702. me officers

  703. of the

  704. army and

  705. horsemen.

  706. But when

  707. Sambalot,

  708. the Horonite,

  709. and Tobiah,

  710. the Ammonite

  711. servant,

  712. heard this.

  713. And these

  714. guys,

  715. Sambalot and

  716. Tobiah are

  717. trouble and

  718. trouble and

  719. trouble.

  720. It displeased

  721. them greatly

  722. that someone

  723. had come to

  724. seek the

  725. welfare of

  726. the people

  727. of Israel.

  728. A Horonite

  729. and an Ammonite

  730. that were

  731. profiting off

  732. the land

  733. were troubled

  734. that someone

  735. came to

  736. seek the

  737. welfare of

  738. the people

  739. to whom

  740. the land

  741. belonged.

  742. After the

  743. plan is

  744. made,

  745. and the

  746. decision to

  747. rebuild has

  748. been established.

  749. They've

  750. strengthened

  751. their hands

  752. for the

  753. good work.

  754. Verse 19

  755. tells us,

  756. but when

  757. Sambalot,

  758. the Horonite,

  759. and Tobiah,

  760. the Ammonite,

  761. servant,

  762. and Geshem,

  763. the Arab,

  764. heard of it,

  765. they jeered

  766. at us and

  767. despised us

  768. and said,

  769. what is this

  770. thing that you

  771. were doing?

  772. Are you

  773. rebelling

  774. against the

  775. king?

  776. Then I

  777. replied to

  778. them,

  779. the God

  780. of heaven

  781. will make

  782. us prosper

  783. and we,

  784. his servants,

  785. will arise

  786. and build,

  787. but you

  788. have no

  789. portion or

  790. right or

  791. claim in

  792. Jerusalem.

  793. Right?

  794. Bold,

  795. bold words.

  796. Then chapter

  797. three gives us

  798. the record of

  799. work going

  800. on,

  801. that this

  802. large task

  803. being accomplished,

  804. but chapter

  805. four tells us

  806. more about

  807. the opposition.

  808. I'm going to

  809. read it to

  810. you in

  811. large part.

  812. Verse one,

  813. now when

  814. Sambalot heard

  815. that we were

  816. building the

  817. wall,

  818. he was angry

  819. and greatly

  820. enraged and

  821. he jeered at

  822. the Jews and

  823. he said in the

  824. presence of his

  825. brothers and of

  826. the army of

  827. Samaria,

  828. what are these

  829. feeble Jews

  830. doing?

  831. Will they

  832. restore it for

  833. themselves?

  834. Will they

  835. sacrifice?

  836. Will they

  837. finish up in a

  838. day?

  839. Will they

  840. revive the

  841. stones out of

  842. the heaps of

  843. rubbish and

  844. burned ones at

  845. that?

  846. Tobiah the

  847. Ammonite was

  848. beside him and

  849. he said,

  850. yes,

  851. what they are

  852. building?

  853. If a fox

  854. goes up on

  855. out,

  856. he will

  857. break down

  858. their stone

  859. wall.

  860. And then in

  861. response here,

  862. oh,

  863. our God,

  864. for we are

  865. despised,

  866. turn back

  867. their taunt on

  868. their own

  869. heads and

  870. give them up

  871. to be plundered

  872. in a land

  873. where they

  874. are captives.

  875. Do not cover

  876. their guilt and

  877. let not their

  878. sin be blotted

  879. out from your

  880. sight for they

  881. have provoked

  882. you to anger

  883. in the presence

  884. of the builders.

  885. Verse six,

  886. so we built

  887. the wall and

  888. all the wall

  889. was joined

  890. together to

  891. half its height

  892. for the people

  893. had a mind

  894. to work.

  895. I love that

  896. phrase.

  897. But when

  898. Sambalat and

  899. Tobiah and

  900. the Arabs and

  901. the Ammonites

  902. and the

  903. Ashdodites heard

  904. that the repairing

  905. of the walls of

  906. Jerusalem was going

  907. forward and that

  908. the breaches were

  909. beginning to be

  910. closed,

  911. they were very

  912. angry and they

  913. all plotted

  914. together to come

  915. and fight against

  916. Jerusalem and to

  917. cause confusion

  918. in it.

  919. And we prayed

  920. to our God

  921. and set a guard

  922. as a protection

  923. against them

  924. day and night.

  925. In Judah,

  926. it was said,

  927. the strength of

  928. those who bear

  929. the burdens

  930. is failing.

  931. There is too

  932. much rubble.

  933. By ourselves,

  934. we will not be

  935. able to rebuild

  936. the wall.

  937. And our enemy

  938. said,

  939. they will not

  940. know or see

  941. till we come

  942. among them

  943. and kill them

  944. and stop the

  945. work.

  946. At that time,

  947. the Jews who

  948. lived near them

  949. came from all

  950. directions and

  951. said to us,

  952. ten times,

  953. you must return

  954. to us.

  955. So in the

  956. lowest parts of

  957. the space behind

  958. the wall,

  959. in open places,

  960. I stationed the

  961. people by their

  962. clans with their

  963. swords, their

  964. spears, and their

  965. bows.

  966. Remember the

  967. Lord who is

  968. great and awesome

  969. and fight for

  970. your brothers,

  971. your sons,

  972. your daughters,

  973. your wives,

  974. and your homes.

  975. When our enemies

  976. heard that it was

  977. known to us and

  978. that God had

  979. frustrated their

  980. plan, we all

  981. returned to the

  982. wall, each to

  983. his work.

  984. From that day

  985. on, half of my

  986. servants worked on

  987. construction and

  988. half held the

  989. spears, shields,

  990. bows, and

  991. coats of mail.

  992. And the leaders

  993. stood behind the

  994. whole house of

  995. Judah who were

  996. building on the

  997. wall.

  998. Those who carried

  999. burdens were

  1000. loaded in such a

  1001. way that each

  1002. labored on work

  1003. with one hand and

  1004. held his weapon

  1005. with the other.

  1006. And each of the

  1007. builders had his

  1008. sword strapped at

  1009. his side while he

  1010. built.

  1011. The man who

  1012. sounded the trumpet

  1013. was beside me,

1014. and I said to the

  1015. nobles, the

  1016. officials, and the

  1017. rest of the

  1018. people, the work

  1019. is great and

  1020. widely spread, and

  1021. we are separated

  1022. on the wall far

  1023. from one another.

  1024. In the place

  1025. where you hear

  1026. the sound of

  1027. the trumpet, rally

  1028. to us there, our

  1029. God will fight for

  1030. us.

  1031. So we labored at

  1032. the work, and

  1033. half of them held

  1034. spears from the

  1035. break of dawn till

  1036. the stars came out.

1037. I also said to the

  1038. people at that

  1039. time, let every

  1040. man and his

  1041. servant pass the

  1042. night within

  1043. Jerusalem, that

  1044. they may be a

  1045. guard for us by

  1046. night and may

  1047. labor by day.

  1048. So neither I,

  1049. nor my brothers,

  1050. nor my servants,

1051. nor the men of the

  1052. guard who followed

  1053. me, none of us

  1054. took off our

  1055. clothes, each kept

  1056. his weapon at his

  1057. right hand.

  1058. Godly ambition

  1059. expects opposition

  1060. and, we will do

  1061. well to see,

  1062. responds appropriately

  1063. and presses on.

  1064. They didn't stop the

  1065. work, but for a

  1066. moment.

  1067. They heard an

  1068. attack was coming,

  1069. they all got ready

  1070. for the attack, and

  1071. the text tells us,

  1072. and they returned

  1073. to work.

  1074. They expected it, and

  1075. they just pressed on.

  1076. So be ambitious.

  1077. Don't be apathetic, but

  1078. have godly ambitions.

  1079. Pray that God would

  1080. work in your godly

  1081. ambitions for your

  1082. home, your work, your

  1083. community, your

  1084. culture, and for our

  1085. church.

1086. I hope that you will

  1087. find yourself reflecting

  1088. on lessons from

  1089. Nehemiah's godly

  1090. ambition.

  1091. Godly ambition

  1092. seeks God's glory,

  1093. thinks and asks big,

  1094. plans diligently,

  1095. works hard, and

  1096. expects

  1097. opposition.

1098. I will close with the

  1099. doxology from this

  1100. morning's call to

  1101. worship.

  1102. This is from

  1103. Ephesians 3, verse

    Ephesians 3:20

  1104. 20 and 21.

1105. Now to him who is

1106. able to do far more

  1107. abundantly than all

1108. that we ask or think,

  1109. according to the power

1110. at work within us, to

1111. him be glory in the

  1112. church and in Christ

  1113. Jesus throughout all

  1114. generations forever and

  1115. ever.

  1116. Amen.

  1117. Let's pray together.
