  1. about that in a little bit, but we need to understand how it is a new command to love our brothers and sisters in the new covenant.

  2. ! We need to understand how it is truly new and understand that that truth leaves us with two ways of life, one that results in eternal life and one that results in eternal death.

  3. And just to whet your appetite again for this, I want to mention now that this newness of this new command has a lot more to do with broader theology than you may realize.

  4. Um, lots of conversations have been going on and evangelicalism broadly for the last few years in particular, um, what Christians ought to do or not do with the mosaic law, mosaic covenant in Christian life.

  5. Lots of conversations about who belongs to the new covenant community, not new to us today.

  6. Those have been going on for centuries.

  7. In other words, who belongs to the church and who doesn't as well as other things.

  8. And so believe it or not, this topic, this new command that we're going to see from John in an indirect way actually applies to all of these questions.

  9. It provides an insight that helps us answer all of these questions.

  10. And so with these things in mind, please read with me.

  11. First John chapter two, verses seven through 11.

  12. John writes, beloved, I do not write to you a new command, but an old one which you have had from the beginning.

  13. The old command is the word which you have heard.

  14. On the other hand, I do write to you a new command, which is true in him and in you because the darkness is going away and the true light shines even now.

  15. The one who says he is in the light yet hates his brother is in darkness even now.

  16. The one who loves his brother abides in the light and there is no cause for stumbling in him.

  17. But the one who hates his brother is in darkness and he walks in darkness and he does not know where he is going for the darkness has blinded his eyes.

  18. Our first heading for this morning, if you want to take notes or are taking notes, our first heading is the old command in verse seven.

  19. We're going to consider this first.

  20. Paul talked or John speaks of this old command.

  21. He says again, read with me, verse seven.

  22. Beloved, I do not write to you a new commandment, but an old one which you have had from the beginning.

  23. The old commandment is the word which you have heard.

  24. So what is this old command?

  25. When exactly did John's audience receive this command?

  26. At first glance, it is easy to think that John is referring to Old Testament law, perhaps even some kind of natural law.

  27. If you're into philosophy and these kind of things, after all, he says from the beginning.

  28. And as is clear from verses nine through 11, he's talking about a command to love one another.

  29. Well, we all know that command is ancient.

  30. That summarizes the law.

  31. Leviticus 19, 18.

  32. You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

  33. Well, that all seems to flow and make sense, but not so fast.

  34. Something more is going on and we ought not to quickly jump so far back.

  35. Now, zooming out, John is actually not referring to the Old Testament directly, but rather is referring to the teaching of Jesus Christ as recorded in the gospel of John.

  36. And that's the same John, right?

  37. John 13 verses 35 or excuse me, 34 through 35.

    John 13:35

  38. Jesus says, a new commandment I give to you, that you love one another just as I have loved you.

  39. You also are to love one another.

  40. By this, all people will know that you are my disciples if you have love for one another.

  41. So, again, we have the question, how can Jesus say this is new?

  42. Isn't this the same Jesus who said the whole law is summarized in two commands, one to love God and another like it to love neighbor?

  43. Isn't this really old?

  44. But notice this.

  45. In Leviticus 19, 18.

  46. Moses writes, love your neighbor as yourself.

  47. Jesus raises the stakes.

  48. Think about it this way, and this is an amazing thought.

  49. There is nobody who loves you more than you except for Jesus Christ.

  50. In that sense, Jesus is giving a new commandment because he says to all the beloved, to all the faithful, to all Christians everywhere, you and I, that we are to love one another as Jesus loves us.

  51. And don't forget that he says this right after washing a bunch of gross first century sandal bunion ridden feet.

  52. It's that kind of love.

  53. Right?

  54. Humble.

  55. I'm beneath you.

  56. I'm here for you.

  57. I'm here to serve you.

  58. Love one another just as I have loved you.

  59. So, by the time John writes 1 John, this new command from Jesus is old.

  60. By the time John writes 1 John, the church is established.

  61. It's going out.

  62. It's doing all the things.

  63. And they've already heard this new command from the Gospels, from the Jesus traditions, perhaps from Jesus himself, if some of them were around.

  64. And so, in that sense, at the time of the writing of 1 John, this commandment is now old.

  65. This new command is now old.

  66. They know that they are to love one another as Christ has loved them.

  67. The Gospel that they received and responded to in faith with the teachings of Jesus to love one another is, as verse 7 says,

  68. the word which they have heard.

  69. And so, in that sense, John writes to them an old commandment.

  70. This is important in a first century context because unlike our world today, where we're so ugh about the old, they loved it.

  71. Anything new was viewed with deep suspicion.

  72. It was automatically assumed if it's new, it's foolish.

  73. And so, John can't just outright say this is all new because his entire audience, Jew and Gentile alike, would go crazy.

  74. They would be upset by that.

  75. And so, the old is prized unlike us today where we are so enthralled by the new.

  76. And so, this old, prized, true command that John introduces has a certain inherent credibility because of the Old Testament.

  77. And yet, as we read in verse 8, this old, prized, true command is also new in the light of the new creation.

  78. And this leads to our second heading, Dawn of the New Command.

  79. Dawn of the New Command in verse 8.

  80. Read again with me.

  81. So, after talking about this old command, John says, on the other hand, right, at the same time, you might say,

  82. I am writing to you a new command, which is true in him and in you, because the darkness is going away.

  83. And the true light shines now.

  84. Or already.

  85. John is not denying that the command is old.

  86. He is simply recognizing it is also new, which is why he says this all-important phrase on the other hand.

  87. And we've already seen how and in what sense this new command is new.

  88. Which love is Christ's love.

  89. John 13 again.

  90. The heights and depths are raised, and so it's new.

  91. But John also points us to the fact that it is new every day in the life of the body.

  92. John says of this command, verse 8, that it is true in him and in you.

  93. This is an ongoing reality.

  94. The idea is that this old new love command is truly expressed in Christ, and that it is truly expressed in and among the church.

  95. So again, in other words, this continues.

  96. It's ongoing.

  97. It's not a box you check one time like baptism.

  98. This is something we just simply do and are.

  99. Love for the brotherhood.

  100. We are to be marked by our love for one another.

  101. And so in that sense, it is ever new.

  102. Well, how can that be?

  103. How can this love be ever new?

  104. Again, he clarifies even further.

  105. John answers in the latter half of verse 8,

  106. Because the darkness is going away,

  107. and the true light shines now.

  108. The true light in John's writings is most often a reference to Jesus Christ.

  109. Jesus says as much in John's gospel, John 8, 12.

  110. He says,

  111. I am the light of the world.

  112. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness,

  113. but will have the light of life.

  114. That sounds very familiar.

  115. And John, in 1 John,

  116. is reflecting on this moment in redemptive history.

  117. He rightly recognizes that in the light of Christ,

  118. everything has changed.

  119. It's new.

  120. The darkness is going away.

  121. It wasn't doing that before.

  122. Now it is.

  123. It is going away.

  124. The true light is already here.

  125. He's describing the dawn of a new day.

  126. Because post Christ's death,

  127. post his resurrection,

  128. post his ascension,

  129. we are in fact in a new day,

  130. with a new covenant,

  131. as the first fruits of the new creation.

  132. James 1.18.

  133. And so this is a classic example of the already not yet paradigm

  134. you see throughout the New Testament,

  135. known as inaugurated eschatology,

  136. if you're familiar.

  137. We see that already the light is here.

  138. We can see a glimpse of its beauty.

  139. As the sun rises,

  140. is the idea,

  141. the imagery,

  142. we have a north star to guide us

  143. as it warms us.

  144. And yet,

  145. it's dawn.

  146. There's still darkness.

  147. We still feel the chill of the night in our bones.

  148. It's warming up on the front

  149. as we walk in the light,

  150. feeling the coldness of this sinful world on our backs.

  151. This is kind of the imagery John uses throughout his writings,

  152. this both and of light and dark,

  153. where darkness is going away.

  154. It's progressively happening day to day,

  155. and yet it's still here,

  156. just as the light is coming,

  157. and yet it's already here.

  158. What a perfect image.

  159. And so,

  160. John says,

  161. triumphantly,

  162. the darkness is going away.

  163. And so,

  164. love is ever new

  165. as the light shines brighter and brighter,

  166. as we walk more and more

  167. and further and further

  168. and closer and closer

  169. in and towards that light

  170. that is actively coming.

  171. Now,

  172. I would be remiss

  173. if I did not take this moment

  174. to show you all something

  175. about the newness

  176. of the new covenant.

  177. This is somewhat of a brief excursus,

  178. but it's important

  179. in light of our text this morning,

  180. but also,

  181. given that our church,

  182. as Nathan mentioned in the announcements,

  183. has been having an ongoing conversation

  184. about progressive covenantalism.

  185. And if you don't know what that is,

  186. come August 1st.

  187. It's going to be sick.

  188. But as has been shown,

  189. things have changed

  190. with the coming of Christ.

  191. John invites reflection

  192. on these changes.

  193. And so we,

  194. as attentive disciples,

  195. do well to pay attention

  196. and consider how our relationship

  197. to the law,

  198. Torah,

  199. has changed

  200. with the establishment

  201. of the new covenant.

  202. This is a massive topic

  203. with massive implications,

  204. answering questions like,

  205. is the new covenant community

  206. mixed or elect only?

  207. Should we keep Sabbath?

  208. Should Jewish believers

  209. still be circumcised today

  210. as a matter of law keeping?

  211. Should I move to Moscow, Idaho?

  212. And I'll just tell you right now,

  213. the answer is an emphatic no,

  214. unless you're going to go plant

  215. the biggest,

  216. baddest,

  217. glorious Baptist church.

  218. Okay?

  219. Now, I can't answer

  220. all those questions today.

  221. Again, come August 1st,

  222. it'll be a moment of revelation.

  223. But from our text,

  224. I want to note something

  225. we've already kind of danced around.

  226. To borrow from Paul,

  227. it is important to remember

  228. that as new covenant Christians,

  229. we are not,

  230. as he says,

  231. under the law.

  232. Okay, Galatians 3, 23,

  233. just one example.

  234. Paul says this clearly.

  235. He says,

  236. before faith came,

  237. we were held captive

  238. under the law,

  239. imprisoned until the coming faith

  240. would be in the law.

  241. That's Romans 2, 12.

  242. He also says we are no longer

  243. from the law,

  244. Romans 4, 14.

  245. So he says it in a multitude of ways

  246. and for a lot of different reasons,

  247. but over and over and over again,

  248. Paul makes the point,

  249. we are not in,

  250. from,

  251. or of,

  252. or under the law.

  253. something has changed,

  254. something dramatic.

  255. Right?

  256. What are we to do with this?

  257. How is God's word,

  258. including the law

  259. of the Mosaic covenant,

  260. made obsolete,

  261. as Hebrews 8, 13 says?

  262. How is,

  263. how is God's word then,

  264. the,

  265. the Mosaic law,

  266. Torah,

  267. how are these things

  268. still profitable

  269. for teaching

  270. and reproof

  271. and rebuke,

  272. as Paul says?

  273. On the other hand,

  274. while recognizing

  275. we're no longer under that,

  276. that's over with,

  277. is he talking out of both sides

  278. of his mouth?

  279. What is going on?

  280. Right?

  281. And likewise,

  282. how can John say

  283. in his epistle

  284. over and over

  285. that we know Jesus

  286. by keeping the commandments,

  287. but be in sync

  288. with Paul and Hebrews,

  289. who seem to remove the law

  290. from the equation

  291. in some sense?

  292. What's going on?

  293. By the work of a New Testament scholar

  294. named Brian Rosner,

  295. he wrote a little book

  296. called Paul and the Law,

  297. highly recommend.

  298. And on this topic,

  299. he argues that for Paul,

  300. we no longer relate

  301. to the law as covenant,

  302. but we relate to the law

  303. as scripture.

  304. I'm going to repeat that.

  305. We no longer relate

  306. to the Mosaic law

  307. as covenant,

  308. but we relate to it

  309. as scripture.

  310. What does this mean?

  311. This means that the Mosaic law

  312. is not binding for us today

  313. as covenant

  314. because that covenant

  315. is obsolete.

  316. That law was baked

  317. into the covenantal framework

  318. of the Mosaic covenant.

  319. And so rather,

  320. it functions as scripture,

  321. specifically in two ways

  322. that Rosner,

  323. I think,

  324. rightfully shows

  325. and argues

  326. from the New Testament,

  327. from Paul in particular.

  328. For us today

  329. in the life of believers,

  330. the Mosaic law

  331. simply functions

  332. as wisdom in prophecy.

  333. And so in that sense,

  334. it is profitable

  335. to read,

  336. to teach,

  337. to use for rebukes,

  338. exhortations,

  339. and all the rest

  340. for discipleship.

  341. Still invaluable,

  342. still sweet as the honeycomb,

  343. still all the things

  344. that the Old Testament

  345. says about itself.

  346. But it's not a covenant

  347. for us anymore.

  348. So it functions

  349. in our lives today

  350. in this moment

  351. of redemptive history

  352. under the New Covenant,

  353. which is enacted

  354. on better promises

  355. and is a better covenant.

  356. In this context,

  357. we relate to it

  358. as wisdom

  359. and prophecy,

  360. but not

  361. as law.

  362. And so just know,

  363. isn't it interesting

  364. that the vast majority

  365. of the time

  366. in 1 John,

  367. when John repeatedly

  368. tells us

  369. to keep commandments,

  370. there is that

  371. all-important

  372. possessive pronoun

  373. fronting it.

  374. I'm going to guess

  375. 90% of the time.

  376. You can Google that.

  377. I don't know.

  378. But a lot.

  379. Just one example,

  380. 1 John 2, 3.

  381. And by this we know

  382. that we have come

  383. to know him,

  384. he's talking about Jesus,

  385. if we keep

  386. his commandments.

  387. And that's not

  388. to set Jesus

  389. in contrast

  390. to Moses, right?

  391. Moses was looking

  392. forward to Jesus.

  393. What it is to recognize

  394. is that with the coming

  395. of Jesus,

  396. things have changed.

  397. This really is

  398. a new covenant

  399. with a new law.

  400. And this is why

  401. in James' epistle,

  402. he can refer twice

  403. to the, quote,

  404. law of liberty.

  405. In James 1, 12,

  406. in verse 28,

  407. he can refer to,

  408. quote,

  409. the royal law

  410. in James 2, 8.

  411. Designations,

  412. mind you,

  413. that are never

  414. used

  415. of the Mosaic law.

  416. He's not talking

  417. about that law.

  418. He's talking about

  419. the new commandment,

  420. new covenants,

  421. or excuse me,

  422. new covenant,

  423. and the law

  424. with that.

  425. Likewise,

  426. Paul,

  427. in Galatians 6,

  428. second half of verse 2,

  429. he refers to

  430. the law

  431. of Christ.

  432. So we have

  433. Paul,

  434. John,

  435. and James

  436. talking about

  437. a law

  438. that is clearly

  439. not Old Testament

  440. law.

  441. They use different

  442. words,

  443. but they're talking

  444. about the same

  445. thing.

  446. Not the law

  447. of Moses,

  448. but the law

  449. of Christ.

  450. And so,

  451. friends,

  452. understand this.

  453. The new covenant

  454. really is new,

  455. and it really is better.

  456. Our new covenant

  457. law is the life,

  458. work,

  459. and teaching

  460. of Jesus Christ,

  461. perhaps best summarized

  462. in the Sermon on the Mount.

  463. We can geek out later.

  464. It's great.

  465. And his yoke

  466. is easy.

  467. His burden

  468. is light.

  469. Learn from him.

  470. Love

  471. as he

  472. loves.

  473. Now,

  474. in the dawn

  475. of this new

  476. commandment,

  477. framed by the

  478. new covenant,

  479. John presents

  480. a sort of

  481. test

  482. or evaluation

  483. for the church

  484. to use.

  485. He presents

  486. two ways

  487. of life.

  488. One proves

  489. a person

  490. to be a member

  491. of the new covenant,

  492. to be a brother

  493. in the faith,

  494. whereas the other

  495. way of life

  496. proves one

  497. to not

  498. be a brother,

  499. though he

  500. claims to be.

  501. Okay,

  502. so we're not

  503. talking about

  504. people who are

  505. visibly on the

  506. outside.

  507. He's talking about

  508. people visibly

  509. inside,

  510. but who's truly

  511. in and who's

  512. actually

  513. out.

  514. And so,

  515. John continues

  516. in verses 9

  517. through 11.

  518. We'll reread

  519. them.

  520. He says,

  521. the one who

  522. says he's

  523. in the

  524. light,

  525. but hates

  526. his brother,

  527. is in

  528. darkness

  529. even now.

  530. And I'll just

  531. point out,

  532. why does he

  533. say even

  534. now?

  535. Because he's

  536. reflecting on

  537. the fact that

  538. we're in a

  539. new covenant

  540. era,

  541. things have

  542. changed,

  543. it is really

  544. better,

  545. and yet,

  546. there are

  547. still false

  548. sheep in

  549. the fold.

  550. Right?

  551. So the one

  552. who says he's

  553. in the light,

  554. but hates

  555. his brother,

  556. is in

  557. darkness,

  558. even now.

  559. This kind

  560. of thing

  561. still happens.

  562. Verse 10,

  563. the one who

  564. loves his

  565. brother abides

  566. in the light,

  567. and there is

  568. no cause for

  569. stumbling with

  570. him,

  571. but the one

  572. who hates

  573. his brother

  574. is in

  575. darkness,

  576. and walks

  577. in darkness,

  578. and does

  579. not know

  580. where he's

  581. going,

  582. because the

  583. darkness has

  584. blinded his

  585. eyes.

  586. And so,

  587. one way of

  588. life that

  589. John describes

  590. here is that

  591. of self-deception

  592. and hate.

  593. He refers

  594. to the one

  595. who says

  596. he is in

  597. the light.

  598. Verse 9,

  599. light, of

  600. course,

  601. being a

  602. general reference

  603. throughout

  604. scripture for

  605. truth and

  606. wisdom,

  607. but in

  608. John's

  609. case,

  610. he particularly

  611. identifies

  612. the light

  613. with God

  614. the Father

  615. at times,

  616. and God

  617. the Son

  618. at times.

  619. 1 John

  620. 1.5

  621. being an

  622. example,

  623. and John

  624. 8.12

  625. as we saw

  626. earlier.

  627. So the

  628. person John

  629. is imagining

  630. is one who

  631. says he is

  632. a Christian.

  633. This person

  634. says,

  635. I'm with

  636. God,

  637. I'm saved,

  638. I love

  639. Jesus.

  640. And we

  641. have every

  642. reason from

  643. what John's

  644. telling us

  645. to think

  646. that this

  647. person really

  648. believes that

  649. about himself

  650. or herself.

  651. Yet,

  652. verse 9,

  653. this person

  654. hates his

  655. fellow Christians,

  656. his brothers

  657. and sisters.

  658. And it is

  659. by this very

  660. hatred of

  661. brother that

  662. demonstrates he

  663. is deceiving not

  664. only himself,

  665. but possibly

  666. those around

  667. him.

  668. This is why

  669. verse 11

  670. describes him

  671. as blind.

  672. It says he

  673. does not know

  674. where he's

  675. going.

  676. He's deceiving

  677. himself.

  678. Simply put,

  679. this person

  680. says the

  681. right things,

  682. thinks the

  683. right things,

  684. thinks he

  685. believes those

  686. things,

  687. but he does

  688. not do the

  689. right things,

  690. which shows he

  691. does not really

  692. believe those

  693. things.

  694. things.

  695. And so as

  696. James says in

  697. James chapter 2

    James 2:18

  698. verse 18,

  699. he says,

  700. but someone

  701. will say,

  702. you have faith

  703. and I have

  704. works.

  705. Show me your

  706. faith apart

  707. from your

  708. works.

  709. And James

  710. says,

  711. I will show

  712. you my

  713. faith by

  714. my works.

  715. But how

  716. do I know

  717. if I hate

  718. my brother?

  719. I think if

  720. we're all

  721. honest,

  722. we've been

  723. frustrated with

  724. somebody in

  725. this room at

  726. some point.

  727. Maybe a lot

  728. of it's not

  729. me, but

  730. that happens.

  731. So what does

  732. it mean to

  733. hate my

  734. brother?

  735. What does

  736. it mean to

  737. hate?

  738. I'm looking

  739. at my actual

  740. brother right

  741. now.

  742. I don't know

  743. why.

  744. In his

  745. commentary on

  746. 1 John,

  747. that was

  748. unplanned,

  749. Robert Yarbrough

  750. notes that

  751. Jesus'

  752. description of

  753. hate in

  754. Luke 6

    Luke 6:22

  755. verse 22

  756. is probably

  757. operative in

  758. John's mind.

  759. Jesus says,

  760. blessed are

  761. you when

  762. people hate

  763. you and

  764. when they

  765. exclude you

  766. and revile

  767. you and

  768. spurn your

  769. name as

  770. evil on

  771. account of

  772. the Son

  773. of

  774. man.

  775. A lot

  776. could be

  777. said of

  778. this verse,

  779. but note

  780. the things

  781. that Jesus

  782. says describe

  783. hate.

  784. Exclusion,

  785. insult,

  786. rejection.

  787. And so

  788. brothers and

  789. sisters,

  790. it's perfectly

  791. normal in

  792. church life to

  793. have issues,

  794. grievances,

  795. even annoyances.

  796. Right?

  797. Why is that

  798. dude always

  799. sneezing,

  800. right?

  801. Little stuff

  802. to bigger

  803. things,

  804. right?

  805. With one

  806. another at

  807. different times

  808. and in

  809. different ways.

  810. fact,

  811. we all

  812. have and

  813. will all

  814. sin against

  815. one another.

  816. And we'll

  817. talk about

  818. that more

  819. in the next

  820. two weeks.

  821. But I

  822. say to you

  823. now,

  824. in light of

  825. John's

  826. warning,

  827. that when

  828. those difficulties,

  829. when those

  830. challenges

  831. arise,

  832. are

  833. if you

  834. are

  835. responding

  836. hatefully

  837. without

  838. repentance,

  839. you are

  840. a false

  841. believer.

  842. No nuance

  843. needed.

  844. That's what

  845. John is

  846. saying.

  847. If you

  848. are excluding

  849. people within

  850. the body,

  851. insulting

  852. them without

  853. end,

  854. rejecting

  855. them,

  856. I have no

  857. time for

  858. you,

  859. no patience

  860. for you,

  861. right?

  862. This kind

  863. of attitude

  864. all the

  865. time,

  866. perpetually,

  867. without end,

  868. then you

  869. are the

  870. person John

  871. is talking

  872. about.

  873. And again,

  874. I'm sure we

  875. have all

  876. avoided somebody

  877. at some

  878. point out

  879. of frustration.

  880. Things can

  881. get tense

  882. sometimes in

  883. personal

  884. relationships,

  885. and sometimes

  886. that's even

  887. wise to

  888. just distance

  889. for a little

  890. bit.

  891. He's not

  892. talking about

  893. that.

  894. He's talking

  895. about a

  896. way of

  897. life.

  898. He's talking

  899. about somebody

  900. who actively

  901. is doing

  902. these things

  903. with no

  904. stop,

  905. no regret,

  906. no remorse,

  907. perhaps even

  908. justifying it.

  909. Well, you

  910. don't understand

  911. what he's

  912. like,

  913. right?

  914. That kind

  915. of stuff.

  916. Verse 11,

  917. he says,

  918. this person

  919. walks in

  920. darkness.

  921. Walking in

  922. the ancient

  923. world is a

  924. metaphor for

  925. one's way of

  926. life.

  927. That's what he's

  928. talking about.

  929. This person's

  930. way of life

  931. is this

  932. darkness,

  933. this hatred,

  934. this self-deception.

  935. It's not

  936. merely that he

  937. acted hatefully

  938. at one time.

  939. Every person

  940. in here,

  941. myself included,

  942. is guilty

  943. of that.

  944. Who hasn't

  945. done that?

  946. But it is

  947. an entire

  948. way of

  949. life,

  950. and it

  951. shows over

  952. time.

  953. It shows

  954. in the

  955. absence of

  956. love and

  957. the absence

  958. of repentance.

  959. That is

  960. who John

  961. is describing.

  962. Now,

  963. please hear me

  964. when I say

  965. this.

  966. I say

  967. these things

  968. not because

  969. I have

  970. anybody in

  971. mind.

  972. In fact,

  973. while no

  974. church is

  975. perfect,

  976. and we're

  977. going to

  978. unpack this

  979. more in

  980. the next

  981. two weeks,

  982. I'm just

  983. so encouraged,

  984. generally

  985. speaking,

  986. broadly

  987. speaking,

  988. specifically

  989. speaking,

  990. of the

  991. love this

  992. body has

  993. for one

  994. another.

  995. Many of

  996. you know,

  997. I was

  998. gone for

  999. two and

  1000. a half

  1001. years

  1002. when my

  1003. wife took

  1004. a job

  1005. and then

  1006. did an

  1007. internship.

  1008. And at

  1009. one point

  1010. during that

  1011. time,

  1012. we got in

  1013. a horrible

  1014. wreck.

  1015. And even

  1016. though I

  1017. had had

  1018. two churches

  1019. that I had

  1020. been members

  1021. at,

  1022. and they

  1023. were great

  1024. and stuff,

  1025. so I was

  1026. two churches

  1027. removed from

  1028. this church,

  1029. and yet

  1030. within 24

  1031. hours,

  1032. there was a

  1033. meal train

  1034. set up.

  1035. And that's

  1036. a special

  1037. love.

  1038. That's

  1039. Christ.

  1040. And we

  1041. felt so

  1042. loved by

  1043. that,

  1044. and I

  1045. hope you

  1046. have felt

  1047. our love

  1048. over the

  1049. years in

  1050. various

  1051. things.

  1052. But it

  1053. is amazing

  1054. the love

  1055. this body

  1056. has.

  1057. So please

  1058. hear me say

  1059. that.

  1060. I am not

  1061. rebuking anybody

  1062. right now,

  1063. but I am

  1064. giving the

  1065. warning.

  1066. Because

  1067. nonetheless,

  1068. I am one

  1069. man with

  1070. limited

  1071. perspective.

  1072. I don't

  1073. see any

  1074. issues of

  1075. ongoing hate

  1076. in our

  1077. church.

  1078. Praise

  1079. God.

  1080. But perhaps

  1081. it is

  1082. happening,

  1083. and I'm

  1084. just missing

  1085. it.

  1086. So I

  1087. say this

  1088. out of

  1089. love,

  1090. as a

  1091. warning to

  1092. you,

  1093. in light

  1094. of John's

  1095. warning,

  1096. to examine

  1097. yourself in

  1098. light of

  1099. this text.

  1100. If there

  1101. is relational

  1102. friction in

  1103. your life

  1104. right now,

  1105. that has

  1106. been ongoing,

  1107. brooding,

  1108. getting worse,

  1109. no light at

  1110. the end of

  1111. the tunnel,

  1112. you're

  1113. responding with

  1114. exclusion,

  1115. insult,

  1116. rejection,

  1117. then go

  1118. repent and

  1119. make peace.

  1120. love,

  1121. and remember

  1122. the encouraging

  1123. words in

  1124. John's

  1125. epistle.

  1126. He says in

  1127. 1 John 1

  1128. 9,

  1129. famous verse

  1130. in the

  1131. Bible,

  1132. if we

  1133. confess our

  1134. sins,

  1135. he is

  1136. faithful and

  1137. just to

  1138. forgive us

  1139. our sins

  1140. and to

  1141. cleanse us

  1142. from all

  1143. unrighteousness.

  1144. And so

  1145. that is

  1146. one way

  1147. of life,

  1148. that of

  1149. hate and

  1150. self-deception.

  1151. It is

  1152. darkness which

  1153. results in

  1154. blindness,

  1155. aimlessness.

  1156. It is the

  1157. opposite of

  1158. being a

  1159. created being.

  1160. It's perpetual

  1161. uncreation,

  1162. being sub-human,

  1163. pursuing that,

  1164. and it

  1165. results in

  1166. eternal

  1167. damnation.

  1168. But John

  1169. presents a

  1170. another way

  1171. of life,

  1172. a good

  1173. way,

  1174. a wise

  1175. way,

  1176. the only

  1177. true way,

  1178. that of

  1179. love.

  1180. And so

  1181. read verse

  1182. 10 with me

  1183. again.

  1184. It's

  1185. sandwiched

  1186. in between

  1187. this dark

  1188. way that he

  1189. describes,

  1190. and maybe

  1191. it's a

  1192. chiasm,

  1193. I don't

  1194. know,

  1195. don't care.

  1196. I might

  1197. regret that

  1198. later.

  1199. the one

  1200. who loves

  1201. his brother

  1202. abides in

  1203. the light,

  1204. and there

  1205. is no

  1206. cause for

  1207. stumbling

  1208. with him.

  1209. As I

  1210. already said,

  1211. in many ways,

  1212. today's sermon

  1213. ends with a

  1214. foretaste of a

  1215. topic we will

  1216. consider heavily

  1217. the next two

  1218. weeks, and that

  1219. topic, of course,

  1220. is love.

  1221. love.

  1222. But I want

  1223. to note a

  1224. few things

  1225. here that

  1226. will set us

  1227. up well for

  1228. that, as I

  1229. alluded to

  1230. earlier.

  1231. Again,

  1232. John 13,

  1233. 35,

  1234. Gospel of

  1235. John,

  1236. Jesus says,

  1237. by this all

  1238. people will

  1239. know that

  1240. you are my

  1241. disciples,

  1242. if you have

  1243. love for

  1244. one another.

  1245. This is the

  1246. tell.

  1247. This is the

  1248. ultimate

  1249. proof.

  1250. There is no

  1251. greater or

  1252. more convincing

  1253. thing of our

  1254. relationship with

  1255. Christ than

  1256. our love for

  1257. him and for

  1258. one another.

  1259. You can have

  1260. all the right

  1261. doctrine, all

  1262. the right

  1263. strategies, all

  1264. the best ideas,

  1265. the biggest,

  1266. growing, coolest

  1267. church, reach the

  1268. most people for

  1269. Christ, and I'm

  1270. talking about true

  1271. conversions, but

  1272. if it's not done

  1273. in love, then

  1274. on that person's

  1275. account, it is

  1276. worthless.

  1277. So this is not

  1278. just a mark of

  1279. a Christian, but

1280. it is the mark of

  1281. the Christian and

  1282. of the true

  1283. church.

  1284. And this mark,

  1285. this love, John

  1286. says, says two

  1287. things about such

  1288. a person.

  1289. Number one, it

  1290. says he abides in

  1291. the light.

  1292. And number two,

  1293. it says, he says

  1294. that there is no

  1295. cause for stumbling

  1296. with such a

  1297. person.

  1298. To abide in the

  1299. light is John's

  1300. way of saying that

  1301. one is walking

  1302. with God in faith

  1303. and obedience.

  1304. Dr. Rob Plummer

  1305. puts it this way,

  1306. to be in the

1307. light is to be in

  1308. the realm of

  1309. God's people,

  1310. the church.

  1311. Living in the

  1312. light of the new

  1313. age dawning,

  1314. recognizing that we

  1315. are the first

  1316. fruits of a new

  1317. creation, we're in

  1318. a new covenant,

  1319. that's what he's

  1320. talking about.

  1321. Right?

  1322. Living in the

  1323. light of this

  1324. new age dawning,

  1325. this moment in

  1326. redemptive history,

  1327. and he continues

  1328. reflecting the

  1329. God who is

  1330. himself, light.

  1331. And so again,

  1332. to love one

  1333. another as Christ

  1334. has loved us.

  1335. And this person

  1336. has no cause for

  1337. stumbling.

  1338. This does not

  1339. mean that this

  1340. brother or sister

  1341. does not sin.

  1342. John is not

  1343. describing sinless

  1344. perfection.

  1345. That is explicit.

  1346. First John 1.8,

  1347. if we say we

  1348. have no sin,

  1349. we deceive

  1350. ourselves.

  1351. Right?

  1352. In other words,

  1353. we're the one

  1354. walking in darkness.

  1355. And the truth,

  1356. he says,

  1357. is not in us.

  1358. So he's not

  1359. talking about

  1360. sinless

  1361. perfection.

  1362. Rather,

  1363. he is saying

  1364. that insofar

  1365. as we are

  1366. walking in the

  1367. light,

  1368. as we are

  1369. believing in

  1370. Christ for

  1371. salvation,

  1372. loving God,

  1373. loving neighbor,

  1374. insofar as we

  1375. are doing

  1376. these things,

  1377. he will not

  1378. be a terminal

  1379. detriment to

  1380. himself or to

  1381. his brothers

  1382. and sisters.

  1383. In other words,

  1384. he is bound

  1385. to prevail.

  1386. That the

  1387. victory,

  1388. the salvation,

  1389. the final

  1390. vindication is

  1391. provided by grace

  1392. through faith

  1393. from our

  1394. Lord.

  1395. From beginning

  1396. to end,

  1397. he began the

  1398. work in us

  1399. and he will

  1400. bring it

  1401. to completion.

  1402. That is what

  1403. John's describing.

  1404. There is no

  1405. cause for

  1406. ultimate,

  1407. fatal,

  1408. stumbling.

  1409. Praise be to

  1410. God.

  1411. Now,

  1412. in closing,

  1413. I just want to

  1414. offer a few

  1415. additional

  1416. applications

  1417. in light of

  1418. our text.

  1419. Some of them

  1420. may seem

  1421. fairly obvious,

  1422. but that's not

  1423. a bad thing.

  1424. That's a good

  1425. thing.

  1426. John's a fairly

  1427. obvious writer,

  1428. very direct.

  1429. But number

  1430. one,

  1431. walk with

  1432. God in

  1433. church community.

  1434. Walk in the

  1435. light with

  1436. the brothers

  1437. and sisters,

  1438. if you want

  1439. to use

  1440. John's words.

  1441. And what

  1442. does this

  1443. entail?

  1444. Well,

  1445. this entails

  1446. the regular

  1447. and meaningful

  1448. reading of

  1449. scripture with

  1450. brothers and

  1451. sisters.

  1452. Of course,

  1453. we do this

  1454. on Sundays

  1455. and that's

  1456. the chief

  1457. gathering of

  1458. the church

  1459. in which we

  1460. faithfully

  1461. obey that.

  1462. This includes

  1463. in homes,

  1464. this includes

  1465. with one

  1466. another in

  1467. discipleship

  1468. contexts and

  1469. just regular

  1470. Christian

  1471. fellowship.

  1472. It should be

  1473. normal.

  1474. This entails

  1475. regular and

  1476. meaningful prayer

  1477. with brothers

  1478. and sisters.

  1479. I'll just say

  1480. to you,

  1481. please come to

  1482. the Sunday

  1483. evening prayer

  1484. meeting.

  1485. Admittedly,

  1486. it's one of the

  1487. hardest ones to

  1488. get to.

  1489. I totally get

  1490. that.

  1491. I have

  1492. littles.

  1493. It's a

  1494. hard time.

  1495. Usually,

  1496. my wife

  1497. has to

  1498. stay and

  1499. we work

  1500. that out.

  1501. I understand

  1502. the challenge,

  1503. but I promise

  1504. it's the

  1505. most rewarding.

  1506. It is so

  1507. great to

  1508. pray with

  1509. the church

  1510. in an

  1511. intimate

  1512. setting like

  1513. that.

  1514. Come and

  1515. you will

  1516. be blessed.

  1517. I would

  1518. add,

  1519. if you

  1520. don't already

  1521. have a

  1522. habit of

  1523. doing

  1524. this,

  1525. pray through

  1526. the members

  1527. directory.

  1528. Thankful I

  1529. made the

  1530. cut.

  1531. text the

  1532. person you

  1533. are praying

  1534. for to

  1535. ask how

  1536. you can

  1537. specifically

  1538. be praying.

  1539. If you're

  1540. a man,

  1541. text the

  1542. men.

  1543. If you're

  1544. a woman,

  1545. text the

  1546. women.

  1547. I'll just

  1548. tell you as

  1549. one encouraging

  1550. example,

  1551. one of the

  1552. many examples

  1553. of love in

  1554. this church,

  1555. for me

  1556. particularly,

  1557. has been

  1558. Daniel Tipton.

  1559. I just

  1560. want to

  1561. commend him.

  1562. In

  1563. particular,

  1564. for reasons

  1565. unbeknownst to

  1566. me,

  1567. maybe he

  1568. just sees

  1569. it as a

  1570. great need.

  1571. But he's

  1572. been texting

  1573. me regularly

  1574. to let me

  1575. know,

  1576. that his

  1577. family is

  1578. praying for

  1579. me during

  1580. their family

  1581. worship and

  1582. my family.

  1583. I don't

  1584. really know

  1585. why that

  1586. started,

  1587. but it's

  1588. been such

  1589. an encouragement

  1590. to me.

  1591. So I just

  1592. share that

  1593. with you to

  1594. say,

  1595. what a good

  1596. thing to

  1597. do.

  1598. What a

  1599. loving thing

  1600. to do.

  1601. This entails

  1602. singing psalms,

  1603. hymns,

  1604. and spiritual

  1605. songs to

  1606. one another.

  1607. This entails

  1608. hearing the

  1609. word preached

  1610. and taking

  1611. the Lord's

  1612. supper

  1613. together.

  1614. And sure,

  1615. it means the

  1616. ordinary means

  1617. of grace.

  1618. being an

  1619. active,

  1620. meaningful

  1621. member of

  1622. your church.

  1623. Not just

  1624. showing up

  1625. on Sundays,

  1626. but being

  1627. present,

  1628. and then

  1629. also being

  1630. open and

  1631. hospitable

  1632. Monday through,

  1633. well,

  1634. the whole week,

  1635. but you get

  1636. the idea,

  1637. right?

  1638. All the

  1639. time.

  1640. Application

  1641. number two.

  1642. This one

  1643. might seem

  1644. out of left

  1645. field.

  1646. Practice

  1647. regenerate

  1648. church

  1649. membership.

  1650. In other

  1651. words,

  1652. be a

  1653. Baptist,

  1654. right?

  1655. Jamie

  1656. Dunlap

  1657. makes the

  1658. following

  1659. point in

  1660. his book,

  1661. Love the

  1662. Ones Who

  1663. Drive You

  1664. Crazy.

  1665. In his

  1666. introduction,

  1667. he says that

  1668. his entire

  1669. book,

  1670. which as you

  1671. can guess,

  1672. deals with

  1673. loving church

  1674. members that

  1675. are not so

  1676. easy for you

  1677. to love for

  1678. whatever reasons,

  1679. doctrinal

  1680. differences,

  1681. personality.

  1682. He's an

  1683. Ohio State

  1684. fan,

  1685. get that

  1686. one.

  1687. You know,

  1688. really

  1689. difficult

  1690. people.

  1691. And he

  1692. warns that

  1693. everything in

  1694. his book,

  1695. all the

  1696. advice he's

  1697. going to

  1698. give you,

  1699. all the

  1700. biblical

  1701. teaching,

  1702. the

  1703. motivations,

  1704. the

  1705. truths

  1706. therein,

  1707. the

  1708. foundations

  1709. that the

  1710. Bible

  1711. itself

  1712. gives

  1713. for the

  1714. new

  1715. covenant

  1716. community

  1717. and why

  1718. it is

  1719. we are

  1720. able and

  1721. must love

  1722. one another

  1723. assumes a

  1724. Baptist

  1725. ecclesiology,

  1726. it assumes

  1727. regenerate

  1728. church

  1729. membership.

  1730. And so

  1731. this is

  1732. why we

  1733. constantly in

  1734. the New

  1735. Testament see

  1736. the command

  1737. love your

  1738. brother,

  1739. not just

  1740. another.

  1741. I was

  1742. really proud

  1743. of that.

  1744. So if you

  1745. practice a

  1746. mixed community

  1747. as our

  1748. Paedo Baptist

  1749. brothers do,

  1750. or if you

  1751. do not

  1752. guard the

  1753. membership and

  1754. just let

  1755. whoever in

  1756. as they walk

  1757. the aisle as

  1758. some of our

  1759. so-called

  1760. Baptist

  1761. brothers do,

  1762. or perhaps

  1763. worse,

  1764. don't even

  1765. practice

  1766. membership,

  1767. then all

  1768. that the

  1769. New Testament

  1770. says to

  1771. encourage and

  1772. establish love

  1773. among the

  1774. brotherhood in

  1775. those difficult

  1776. relationships is

  1777. robbed of its

  1778. power.

  1779. In that

  1780. scenario, we

  1781. aren't of the

  1782. same spirit,

  1783. because you're

  1784. letting somebody

  1785. in who doesn't

  1786. have the

  1787. spirit, which

  1788. is one of

  1789. Paul's big

  1790. appeals for

  1791. Christian love,

  1792. or of the

  1793. same spirit.

  1794. Conversion.

  1795. We've all been

  1796. converted.

  1797. That's what he's

  1798. saying.

  1799. And so we

  1800. save ourselves

  1801. a lot of

  1802. heartache, a

  1803. lot of

  1804. confusion, a

  1805. lot of

  1806. difficulty in

  1807. loving our

  1808. fellow members

  1809. when we do

  1810. the hard work

  1811. on the front

  1812. end of

  1813. ensuring to

  1814. the best of

  1815. our ability

  1816. that new

  1817. prospective

  1818. members are

  1819. true

  1820. Christians.

  1821. Otherwise,

  1822. you are

  1823. inviting the

  1824. blind, aimless

  1825. one who

  1826. hates his

  1827. brother into

  1828. the fold.

  1829. And so

  1830. brothers and

  1831. sisters, let's

  1832. work together

  1833. to guard

  1834. the membership,

  1835. to practice

  1836. regenerate

  1837. church

  1838. membership.

  1839. Don't just

  1840. leave that to

  1841. the elders,

  1842. though they

  1843. lead us in

  1844. that.

  1845. But we're a

  1846. congregational

  1847. church.

  1848. It's every

  1849. member's

  1850. responsibility

  1851. to do

  1852. this.

  1853. And some

  1854. of you are

  1855. thinking he's

  1856. telling us

  1857. now, you

  1858. know, but

  1859. I'm in.

  1860. So application

  1861. number three,

  1862. understand where

  1863. we are in

  1864. redemptive

  1865. history.

  1866. This is not

  1867. just high

  1868. brow theology

  1869. for sake of

  1870. high brow

  1871. theology.

  1872. This is not

  1873. just nerd

  1874. stuff.

  1875. This matters

  1876. practically,

  1877. day to day,

  1878. for every

  1879. Christian.

  1880. John's word

  1881. for us today

  1882. only makes

  1883. sense when

  1884. one has a

  1885. deep

  1886. understanding

  1887. of the,

  1888. what you

  1889. might call

  1890. the meta

  1891. narrative of

  1892. scripture.

  1893. That is the

  1894. overarching story

  1895. from Genesis

  1896. to Revelation

  1897. and how

  1898. God's

  1899. redemption

  1900. has worked

  1901. itself out

  1902. through his

  1903. covenants.

  1904. Right?

  1905. No one can

  1906. begin to

  1907. fathom what

  1908. John means

  1909. just in our

  1910. passage alone

  1911. by this old

  1912. new covenant

  1913. without

  1914. understanding

  1915. how the

  1916. storyline of

  1917. scripture

  1918. unfolds and

  1919. the developments

  1920. therein.

  1921. And so

  1922. practically,

  1923. this means a

  1924. few things,

  1925. means a lot of

  1926. things,

  1927. but I'm going

  1928. to share a

  1929. few.

  1930. Read and

  1931. reread your

  1932. Old Testament.

  1933. Right?

  1934. Know the

  1935. story for

  1936. yourself.

  1937. And this

  1938. one probably

  1939. needs more

  1940. unpacking.

  1941. So you

  1942. have more

  1943. time in

  1944. systematic

  1945. theology and

  1946. more time in

  1947. biblical theology.

  1948. Okay?

  1949. If you don't

  1950. know the

  1951. difference,

  1952. again,

  1953. come August

  1954. 1st,

  1955. progressive

  1956. cow.

  1957. But when

  1958. you spend

  1959. more time in

  1960. biblical theology,

  1961. in other words,

  1962. when you study

  1963. the whole

  1964. storyline of

  1965. scripture,

  1966. the actual

  1967. text,

  1968. the actual

  1969. God-breathed

  1970. stuff,

  1971. and not just

  1972. Brudum or

  1973. Frame or

  1974. MacArthur or

  1975. whoever,

  1976. as great as

  1977. those guys

  1978. are,

  1979. you're going to

  1980. have a much

  1981. better understanding.

  1982. You're going to

  1983. see a lot of

  1984. pitfalls when

  1985. people only read

  1986. systematics and

  1987. don't actually pay

  1988. attention to the

  1989. storyline of

  1990. scripture.

  1991. And it's just

  1992. going to bless you.

  1993. It's going to

  1994. bless you.

  1995. You're going to

  1996. be closer to

  1997. the Lord.

  1998. I mean,

  1999. that's just

  2000. easy math.

  2001. More time in the

  2002. Bible,

  2003. more time with

  2004. God.

  2005. That's not

  2006. rocket science.

  2007. And no,

  2008. I'm not saying

  2009. no time in

  2010. systematics.

  2011. I'm just

  2012. pleading with

  2013. you that it's

  2014. God's word that's

  2015. inspired and

  2016. inerrant and

  2017. infallible and

  2018. good and all

  2019. these things.

  2020. Spend more time

  2021. in that and then

  2022. work out to

  2023. those things.

  2024. Another implication

  2025. of this is pay

  2026. attention to how

  2027. the covenants,

  2028. which reveal God's

  2029. redemptive acts

  2030. in each period of

  2031. redemptive history,

  2032. build on one

  2033. another and

  2034. culminate and

  2035. climax in Jesus

  2036. Christ.

  2037. Only when you

  2038. pay attention to

  2039. that will you

  2040. see how the

  2041. Bible truly fits

  2042. together and be

  2043. able to approach

  2044. these really hard

  2045. questions about

  2046. the law, the

  2047. Sabbath, should

  2048. you still be

  2049. circumcised, and

  2050. a whole bunch of

  2051. other stuff related

  2052. to politics,

  2053. nations, all the

  2054. rest.

  2055. If you're really

  2056. into Christian

  2057. nationalism, which

  2058. I hope you

  2059. are, but if you

  2060. are, this will

  2061. save you from

  2062. that.

  2063. So please pay

  2064. attention to

  2065. that storyline.

  2066. And then the

  2067. fourth application,

  2068. the most obvious

  2069. one, and the

  2070. one that I'm not

  2071. going to say a

  2072. lot about, because

  2073. again, we've got

  2074. two more weeks to

  2075. talk about it, but

  2076. application number

  2077. four, love one

  2078. another.

  2079. And so again, if

  2080. you want to know

  2081. more about that,

  2082. come the next two

  2083. weeks, but I will

2084. tell you now a bit

  2085. of a not-so-secret

  2086. tease.

  2087. Look to God,

  2088. right?

  2089. That is the key.

  2090. We're going to

  2091. see that right

  2092. away next week

  2093. in 1 John 4.

  2094. And so, before

  2095. praying this out, I

  2096. just want to say

  2097. how excited I am

  2098. for these next

  2099. two weeks.

  2100. People have

  2101. asked me, what

  2102. made you come

  2103. back for the

  2104. second time?

  2105. If you don't

  2106. know, I've been

  2107. a member here

  2108. now three times.

  2109. I've moved for

  2110. seminary and jobs

  2111. and come back

  2112. and different

  2113. things.

  2114. And people ask,

  2115. why did you

  2116. come back?

  2117. And I always

  2118. tell them, it's

  2119. because I heard

  2120. the plumbing

  2121. got fixed.

  2122. In all

  2123. seriousness,

  2124. Crohn's

  2125. awareness, by

  2126. the way, in

  2127. all seriousness,

  2128. it is love

  2129. for you all.

  2130. I have family

  2131. here.

  2132. I mean, I

  2133. mean, literal

  2134. biological family.

  2135. Some of my

  2136. closest friends

  2137. since college

  2138. are still here.

  2139. but I mean

  2140. all of you.

  2141. And as I

  2142. said earlier,

  2143. one of the

  2144. amazing things

  2145. is my wife

  2146. and I know

  2147. how loved

  2148. we are here

  2149. as well.

  2150. Nobody loves

  2151. perfectly.

  2152. You don't,

  2153. we don't.

  2154. And yet, oh

  2155. my goodness,

  2156. so much love.

  2157. And so I

  2158. mention that to

  2159. say it is so

  2160. good when

  2161. brothers and

  2162. sisters dwell

  2163. in unity.

  2164. So I just

  2165. want to remind

  2166. you all as an

  2167. encouragement that

  2168. this is a true

  2169. church marked

  2170. by true

  2171. love.

  2172. Praise God.

  2173. And I'm so

  2174. thrilled to

  2175. unpack more of

  2176. that in the

  2177. coming weeks.

  2178. I won't talk

  2179. about progressive

  2180. covenantalism,

  2181. most likely,

  2182. but I will be

  2183. talking about love.

  2184. My love for you,

  2185. your love for me,

  2186. and our shared

  2187. love for our

  2188. risen Savior,

  2189. our God who

  2190. is love and

  2191. from whom love

  2192. flows.

  2193. Let's pray.

  2194. All right.
