  1. All right, amen, and good morning.

  2. If I've yet to see you and say so to you,

  3. ! Please take your copy of God's Word and join me in John chapter 11.

    John 11 chapter mention

  4. Our text for today is John chapter 11, verses 18 through 37.

    John 11:18–37

  5. Last week, as we began John 11, we saw something about the love of Jesus that is profoundly comforting,

  6. although at first it can be difficult to understand.

  7. Jesus loved Martha and Mary and Lazarus, and because he loved them, he waited.

  8. He received word that Lazarus was sick.

  9. He knew exactly what was happening in Bethany.

  10. He possessed both the authority and the power to prevent Lazarus from dying,

  11. and yet, rather than immediately traveling to Bethany or just speaking a word where he was,

  12. Jesus remained where he was for two more days.

  13. And the point John forces us to confront is that the delay of Jesus was not a contradiction of his love.

  14. Somehow, mysteriously but unmistakably, the delay was an expression of his love.

  15. Jesus loved them, so the text tells us.

  16. He waited.

  17. Because the love of Christ is aimed at something greater than our immediate comfort.

  18. Christ loves us too much merely to arrange our circumstances according to our preferences.

  19. He intends instead to reveal his glory, strengthen our faith, loosen our grip on this dying world,

  20. and teach us to trust him when we cannot understand what he is doing.

  21. By the time Jesus arrives near Bethany, Lazarus has been in the tomb four days.

  22. From the perspective of Mary and Martha, Jesus appears to have arrived too late.

  23. Lazarus' sickness has run its course.

  24. The funeral has already taken place.

  25. The stone rolled over the entrance.

  26. The mourners have gathered.

  27. Lazarus is most assuredly dead.

  28. And yet, as we said at the conclusion of the sermon last week,

  29. Jesus is never late.

  30. He may not operate according to our timetable.

  31. He may not intervene at the moment we would have chosen.

  32. He may allow circumstances to deteriorate until every human possibility has disappeared.

  33. But he is never late.

  34. Because the Son of God does not merely react to circumstances.

  35. He governs them.

  36. Rules over all things.

  37. And now, beginning in verse 18,

  38. John takes us from the delay of Jesus to the arrival of Jesus.

  39. And what follows is one of the most beautiful passages in all of Scripture.

  40. Because in the space of only 20 verses,

  41. we see both the incomparable majesty and the astonishing tenderness of our Savior.

  42. And so we'll look together at verses 18 through 37.

  43. I will begin reading in verse 1, however,

  44. set the context,

  45. and in case you weren't with us last week.

  46. Before I do any of that,

  47. let me lead us in a prayer for our benefit.

  48. Father God, thank you for your word this morning.

  49. We are always in some state of frailty.

  50. There are times when we feel it more than others.

  51. I can humbly say before you that I'm feeling my frailty today.

  52. The frailty of my preparation.

  53. Certainly the frailty of my delivery.

  54. And all of us, if we're honest,

  55. are frail in our hearing and understanding.

  56. We're easily distracted.

  57. Lots on our minds.

  58. Exhaustion often sets in on Sunday morning.

  59. So we ask that you'd help us to be attentive this day.

  60. Take up your word together that we would rightly see Christ in it.

  61. We would behold him as we should.

  62. That our affections would be turned and set on him.

  63. We would see ourselves in the text.

  64. And see our need of this great Savior.

  65. The Lord Jesus Christ.

  66. It's in his name that we pray.

  67. Amen.

  68. John 11, beginning in verse 1.

  69. Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany,

  70. the village of Mary and her sister Martha.

  71. It was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment

  72. and wiped his feet with her hair,

  73. whose brother, Lazarus, was ill.

  74. The sister sent to him, saying,

  75. Lord, he whom you love is ill.

  76. But when Jesus heard it, he said,

  77. This illness does not lead to death.

  78. It is for the glory of God,

  79. so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.

  80. Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.

  81. So when he heard that Lazarus was ill,

  82. he stayed two days longer in the place where he was.

  83. But after this, he said to the disciples,

  84. Let us go to Judea again.

  85. The disciples said to him,

  86. Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone you,

  87. and are you going there again?

  88. Jesus answered,

  89. Are there not twelve hours in the day?

  90. If anyone walks in the day,

  91. he does not stumble because he sees the light of this world.

  92. But if anyone walks in the night,

  93. he stumbles because the light is not in him.

  94. After saying these things, he said to them,

  95. Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep,

  96. but I go to awaken him.

  97. The disciples said to him,

  98. Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.

  99. Now Jesus had spoken of his death,

  100. but they thought that he meant taking rest in sleep.

  101. Then Jesus told them plainly,

  102. Lazarus has died.

  103. And for your sake, I am glad I was not there,

  104. so that you may believe.

  105. But let us go to him.

  106. So Thomas called the twin,

  107. said to his fellow disciples,

  108. Let us also go that we may die with him.

  109. Now when Jesus came,

  110. he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days.

  111. Bethany was near Jerusalem,

  112. about two miles off,

  113. and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary

  114. to console them concerning their brother.

  115. So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming,

  116. she went and met him,

  117. but Mary remained seated in the house.

  118. Martha said to Jesus,

  119. Lord, if you had been here,

  120. my brother would not have died.

  121. But even now I know that whatever you ask from God,

  122. God will give you.

  123. Jesus said to her,

  124. Your brother will rise again.

  125. Martha said to him,

  126. I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.

  127. Jesus said to her,

  128. I am the resurrection and the life.

  129. Whoever believes in me,

  130. though he die,

  131. yet shall he live.

  132. And everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die.

  133. Do you believe this?

  134. She said to him,

  135. Yes, Lord,

  136. I believe that you are the Christ,

  137. the Son of God,

  138. who is coming into the world.

  139. When she had said this,

  140. she went and called her sister Mary,

  141. saying in private,

  142. The teacher is here and is calling for you.

  143. And when she heard it,

  144. she rose quickly and went to him.

  145. Now Jesus had not yet come into the village,

  146. but was still in the place where Martha had met him.

  147. When the Jews who were with her in the house,

  148. consoling her,

  149. saw Mary rise quickly and go out,

  150. they followed her,

  151. supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there.

  152. Now when Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him,

  153. she fell at his feet,

  154. saying to him,

  155. Lord,

  156. if you had been here,

  157. my brother would not have died.

  158. When Jesus saw her weeping,

  159. and the Jews who had come with her also weeping,

  160. he was deeply moved in his spirit

  161. and greatly troubled.

  162. And he said,

  163. Where have you laid him?

  164. They said to him,

  165. Lord,

  166. come and see.

  167. Jesus wept.

  168. So the Jews said,

  169. See how he loved him?

  170. But some of them said,

  171. Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man

  172. also have kept this man from dying?

  173. All right.

  174. I have three points for us this morning

  175. to consider this text.

  176. The first,

  177. Jesus' arrival.

  178. We'll look at a considerable bit of the text

  179. at this point.

  180. Notice that he goes to Bethany,

  181. this town that Lazarus is from,

  182. and it's near Jerusalem,

  183. about two miles off.

  184. And the nearness to Jerusalem

  185. highlights the danger

  186. that concerned the disciples

  187. earlier in the chapter.

  188. Previously,

  189. Jesus has worked in Judea,

  190. in Jerusalem.

  191. He's healed a blind man,

  192. and they are seeking his death.

  193. The presumption of the disciples

  194. is that they're going with him

  195. to his death

  196. as he arrives in this place

  197. to teach them something

  198. of the resurrection.

  199. And we note as he arrives there,

  200. in the previous verse,

  201. it's already been four days

  202. that Lazarus has been in the tomb.

  203. And many of the Jews,

  204. verse 19 tells us,

  205. had come to Martha and Mary

  206. to console them,

  207. to comfort them

  208. concerning their brother.

  209. Because of the nearness to Jerusalem,

  210. many of the Jews are able to come

  211. and to mourn with Martha and Mary.

  212. Two things are notable here.

  213. First,

  214. the family of Lazarus

  215. possesses some level of prominence

  216. evidenced by this many visiting

  217. to mourn his death.

  218. We don't know a lot about this family,

  219. but they must have had

  220. some degree of prominence

  221. and by later evidence

  222. that they had some financial means

  223. because Mary anoints Jesus' feet

  224. with expensive ointment,

  225. something she couldn't have afforded

  226. otherwise.

  227. We will note later in the chapter

  228. that this miracle

  229. is the final inciting incident

  230. that would lead to Jesus' crucifixion.

  231. John chapter 11

    John 11 chapter mention

  232. and verse 53.

  233. This news goes out.

  234. It's carried back to the Pharisees,

  235. John tells us,

  236. and verse 53 says,

  237. so from that day on,

  238. they made plans

  239. to put him to death.

  240. Jesus knows exactly

  241. what he's doing.

  242. He's going to raise Lazarus

  243. from the dead

  244. to teach something

  245. of the resurrection

  246. and that this incident

  247. will forward,

  248. press on God's plan

  249. for his crucifixion.

  250. Secondly,

  251. I've noted before

  252. that John uses the phrase

  253. the Jews

  254. in various forms

  255. throughout his gospel

  256. and that he most regularly

  257. uses the phrase

  258. to refer to the Jewish leaders

  259. who are antagonistic

  260. toward Jesus.

  261. But in this case,

  262. we have no reason

  263. to believe

  264. that is what he means.

  265. This is one of those instances

  266. where he likely

  267. doesn't mean that

  268. because some of these Jews

  269. go and report

  270. to the Pharisees

  271. who are particularly

  272. antagonistic

  273. toward him.

  274. The text seems

  275. to communicate

  276. that these are

  277. well-meaning people

  278. who know this family

  279. and that they are grieved

  280. alongside them

  281. for their loss.

  282. So they're gathered there

  283. in Bethany

  284. some days later

  285. comforting Martha

  286. and Mary

  287. and grieving the loss

  288. of this man.

  289. Lazarus.

  290. And then verse 20

  291. tells us that

  292. Martha hears

  293. that Jesus is coming,

  294. that he's on the road

  295. and so she gets up.

  296. Mary stays behind

  297. but she gets up

  298. and she goes

  299. to meet him.

  300. There's no need

  301. to read anything

  302. into this private meeting

  303. or the one

  304. that Jesus will attempt

  305. to have with Mary

  306. and there is speculation

  307. concerning this.

  308. But we ought to assume

  309. that Martha

  310. merely wants a moment

  311. alone with Jesus

  312. before having to return

  313. and serve as the hostess

  314. to the crowd

  315. at her house.

  316. If you've ever

  317. been to a funeral

  318. or participated

  319. in the loss

  320. of a near and dear one,

  321. you've either

  322. or you've watched

  323. somebody else

  324. have to host people

  325. even in the midst

  326. of your own grief.

  327. So she steals away,

  328. I think,

  329. all that's happening here.

  330. She wants a moment

  331. with Jesus

  332. before he arrives

  333. with all of the other mourners.

  334. Now,

  335. before we get into

  336. the details

  337. of the rest

  338. of the text

  339. and this conversation

  340. that they have,

  341. I genuinely believe

  342. that we'll be well served

  343. by looking

  344. at its literary structure.

  345. I received a text

  346. this week

  347. that said

  348. chiasms are important.

  349. Don't let people bully you

  350. into not pointing them out.

  351. We have read

  352. the text together.

  353. I sure hope

  354. you have a copy

  355. of it sitting

  356. in front of you.

  357. If you don't,

  358. the bulletin you were handed

  359. has all of the text

  360. found in it

  361. and I would assume

  362. that two phrases,

  363. if you're paying attention

  364. at all,

  365. rightly,

  366. two phrases

  367. leapt off the page

  368. at you.

  369. The first,

  370. these are the two

  371. I'm assuming,

  372. the first,

  373. Jesus says,

  374. I am the resurrection

  375. and the life

  376. in verse 25.

  377. That leapt off.

  378. I tried to read it

  379. with some measure

  380. of emphasis

  381. as I read the text

  382. to you.

  383. I am the resurrection

  384. and the life.

  385. The other,

  386. I'm assuming,

  387. is verse 35.

  388. It states simply,

  389. Jesus wept.

  390. These are not

  391. unimportant phrases.

  392. So don't hear me say

  393. they're unimportant.

  394. They are significant

  395. phrases in this text.

  396. But neither of them

  397. are the chiastic

  398. center

  399. of the text.

  400. We're going to talk

  401. about chiasms.

  402. If you are new here,

  403. chiasm is a literary

  404. structure found

  405. all throughout literature.

  406. It is found a lot

  407. in the Bible.

  408. And I've been arguing

  409. in our study of John

  410. that John uses

  411. chiasms quite often

  412. to draw our attention

  413. to particular parts

  414. of text.

  415. It's a mnemonic device

  416. meant to help people

  417. remember stories.

  418. Early church,

  419. many of these stories

  420. would have just been spoken.

  421. So it's being used

  422. in that way.

  423. But even as we have

  424. the written text

  425. in front of us,

  426. it's meant to help us

  427. draw some emphasis,

  428. give us a lens

  429. by which we look at

  430. the rest of the text.

  431. So the word chiasm

  432. comes from the Greek

  433. letter for X,

  434. chi.

  435. And what it says to us,

  436. and I always plot it out

  437. and sometimes I do for you

  438. in your bulletin,

  439. is that the first part

  440. of the text

  441. corresponds to the last

  442. part of the text

  443. and so on.

  444. So it feeds into a center,

  445. a cross point,

  446. so to speak.

  447. So let me take a few moments

  448. and show you

  449. the chiastic structure

  450. of this text.

  451. I think it's really

  452. going to help us see

  453. what John's communicating here.

  454. So notice first,

  455. verse 18 and 19,

  456. which corresponds

  457. to verse 36 and 37.

  458. You could underline

  459. these things

  460. in your bulletin

  461. if you would like.

  462. Notice that

  463. Jesus travels to Bethany

  464. near Jerusalem

  465. and the Jews,

  466. many Jews,

  467. come to Mary and Martha

  468. to console them

  469. in verse 18 and 19.

  470. And then you see

  471. this speaking of the Jews

  472. at the end,

  473. verse 36 and 37.

  474. So the Jews said,

  475. but some of them said,

  476. verse 37.

  477. The next step in on this,

  478. right, corresponding,

  479. is verses 20 through 24,

  480. corresponding with verses 28

  481. through 35.

  482. Bigger passages, right?

  483. Notice the main thing

  484. going on here

  485. is Martha coming to Jesus

  486. and then Mary,

  487. along with the other mourners,

  488. coming to Jesus.

  489. Note the similarity

  490. in their words.

  491. Martha said to Jesus,

  492. Lord, if you had been here,

  493. my brother would not

  494. have died.

  495. Mary in the same way.

  496. Verse 32,

  497. Lord, if you had been here,

  498. my brother would not

  499. have died.

  500. Some significantly

  501. different things

  502. happening

  503. with Martha

  504. and with

  505. Mary.

  506. But these two things

  507. correspond

  508. to one another.

  509. Then the next step in,

  510. verse 25 and 26,

  511. corresponds to verse 27.

  512. Verse 25 says,

  513. Jesus said to her,

  514. and then verse 27,

  515. she said to him.

  516. And at the center

  517. of all of this structure,

  518. I will argue to you,

  519. is the question

  520. that Jesus asks.

  521. Do you believe this?

  522. I'm going to show you

  523. how the two things

  524. fold on top of each other

  525. and lay as we go on.

  526. But notice at the center

  527. of this,

  528. do you

  529. believe this?

  530. What is he referring to?

  531. His statement

  532. that he has made,

  533. I am the resurrection

  534. and the life.

  535. Whoever believes in me,

  536. though he die,

  537. yet shall he live.

  538. And everyone who lives

  539. and believes in me

  540. shall never

  541. die.

  542. Do

  543. you

  544. believe this?

  545. And then her response,

  546. yes, Lord,

  547. I believe that you

  548. are the Christ,

  549. the Son of God,

  550. who is coming

  551. into the world.

  552. So,

  553. if we pick that up

  554. as a lens,

  555. I hope

  556. it will help us

  557. think the way

  558. we should be

  559. interpreting

  560. Jesus' words

  561. and then

  562. his response

  563. to the grieving

  564. later on.

  565. Now,

  566. verse 21,

  567. Martha

  568. said

  569. to Jesus.

  570. Remember,

  571. she is eager

  572. to go meet with him,

  573. to have this private

  574. moment with him,

  575. and she begins

  576. with the word,

  577. Lord.

  578. Lord,

  579. if you had

  580. been here,

  581. my brother

  582. would not

  583. have died,

  584. but even now

  585. I know

  586. that whatever

  587. you ask

  588. from God,

  589. God will give you.

  590. Note the faith

  591. of Martha.

  592. She begins

  593. with Lord,

  594. and then

  595. adds to the request,

  596. the same request

  597. that Mary makes,

  598. she adds to that,

  599. but even now

  600. I know

  601. that you can

  602. raise Lazarus

  603. from the dead,

  604. is what is implied

  605. in this statement.

  606. And so,

  607. Jesus

  608. says to her,

  609. in a measure

  610. of ambiguity,

  611. your brother

  612. will

  613. rise again.

  614. And she

  615. responds

  616. with some

  617. confusion,

  618. I know

  619. that he

  620. will rise

  621. again

  622. in the

  623. resurrection

  624. on the

  625. last day.

  626. Now,

  627. Martha,

  628. because of

  629. this declaration,

  630. is showing

  631. herself to be

  632. of the

  633. Pharisee

  634. camp.

  635. Theologically,

  636. she believes

  637. in the

  638. resurrection.

  639. There was

  640. two major

  641. groups in

  642. this day,

  643. the Pharisees

  644. and the

  645. Sadducees,

  646. and they

  647. had many

  648. other

  649. differences,

  650. but the

  651. primary

  652. theological

  653. debate that

  654. they had

  655. was whether

  656. or not

  657. there

  658. would

  659. be

  660. a

  661. resurrection.

  662. In the

  663. last day,

  664. there would

  665. be a

  666. resurrection

  667. from the

  668. dead.

  669. The

  670. Pharisees

  671. were more

  672. conservative.

  673. They were

  674. the Bible

  675. people of

  676. the day.

  677. The

  678. Sadducees

  679. tended not

  680. to be.

  681. And they

  682. would have

  683. taken up

  684. a text

  685. like Daniel

  686. 12,

  687. too,

  688. which says,

  689. and many

  690. of those

  691. who sleep

  692. in the

  693. dust of

  694. the earth

  695. shall

  696. awake,

  697. some to

  698. everlasting

  699. life,

  700. and some

  701. to shame

  702. and everlasting

  703. contempt.

  704. And believe

  705. it.

  706. And believe

  707. that there

  708. will in

  709. fact be

  710. a resurrection

  711. on the

  712. last day.

  713. So Martha's

  714. saying to

  715. Jesus,

  716. as he says,

  717. your brother

  718. will rise

  719. again.

  720. She's saying,

  721. I know,

  722. I know

  723. someday he

  724. will rise

  725. again.

  726. And in my

  727. imagination,

  728. she might have

  729. gone on to

  730. say,

  731. but does that

  732. give me hope

  733. now?

  734. Is that

  735. something I

  736. ought to

  737. hang on to

  738. now?

  739. I'm feeling

  740. the grief

  741. of his

  742. loss

  743. now,

  744. but Jesus

  745. gets right

  746. in front

  747. of her

  748. and says,

  749. I am

  750. the resurrection

  751. and the

  752. life.

  753. Now,

  754. this is the

  755. fifth of

  756. Jesus'

  757. I am

  758. statements,

  759. right?

  760. Connecting

  761. himself to

  762. the Godhead.

  763. This chapter

  764. is not the

  765. first we have

  766. heard Jesus

  767. speak of

  768. resurrection.

  769. In chapter

  770. five,

  771. he has

  772. stated that

  773. he,

  774. along with

  775. the father,

  776. raised the

  777. dead.

  778. Just of a

  779. little

  780. interesting

  781. note,

  782. there is

  783. also a

  784. chiastic

  785. structure

  786. between

  787. chapter

  788. five and

  789. all the

  790. way to

  791. chapter

  792. 11.

  793. And you

  794. can guess

  795. chapter

  796. five and

  797. chapter

  798. 11 do

  799. in fact

  800. correspond

  801. with each

  802. other.

  803. In chapter

  804. five,

  805. he has

  806. said,

  807. in verse

  808. 21,

  809. for as

  810. the father

  811. raises the

  812. dead and

  813. gives them

  814. life,

  815. so also

  816. the son

  817. gives life

  818. to whom

  819. he will.

  820. In the

  821. verse 25

  822. and following,

  823. truly,

  824. truly,

  825. truly,

  826. I say

  827. to you,

  828. an hour

  829. is coming

  830. and is

  831. now here

  832. when the

  833. dead will

  834. hear the

  835. voice of

  836. the son

  837. of God

  838. and those

  839. who hear

  840. will live.

  841. For as the

  842. father has

  843. life in

  844. himself,

  845. so he has

  846. granted the

  847. son also

  848. to have

  849. life in

  850. himself.

  851. He has

  852. given him

  853. authority to

  854. execute

  855. judgment

  856. because he

  857. is the

  858. son of

  859. man.

  860. Do not

  861. marvel at

  862. this,

  863. for an hour

  864. is coming

  865. when all

  866. who are in

  867. the tombs

  868. will hear

  869. his voice

  870. and come

  871. out,

  872. those who

  873. have done

  874. good to the

  875. resurrection

  876. of life

  877. and those

  878. who have

  879. done evil

  880. to the

  881. resurrection

  882. of judgment.

  883. So Jesus

  884. has said

  885. already and

  886. not long

  887. ago that

  888. he has

  889. the authority

  890. over life

  891. and death

  892. and the

  893. resurrection.

  894. Here he is

  895. drawing Martha

  896. to see that

  897. a belief in

  898. resurrection is

  899. not some

  900. abstract thing

  901. to believe

  902. in,

  903. but that the

  904. very one

  905. who provides

  906. it is

  907. standing

  908. right.

  909. in front

  910. of her.

  911. That's what

  912. he's doing.

  913. He says,

  914. I am the

  915. resurrection

  916. and the

  917. life.

  918. I have the

  919. power to

  920. execute it.

  921. It is

  922. found in

  923. me.

  924. Christians

  925. do not

  926. just believe

  927. in what

  928. has been

  929. promised by

  930. faith in

  931. Christ,

  932. but in

  933. Christ

  934. himself.

  935. Not just

  936. what is

  937. promised,

  938. but in

  939. Christ

  940. himself.

  941. here we

  942. say again

  943. and again

  944. in presentations

  945. of the

  946. gospel that

  947. we are to

  948. repent,

  949. that is,

  950. turn from

  951. our sin,

  952. recognize that

  953. it is an

  954. offense against

  955. the holy

  956. God.

  957. The word

  958. repent means

  959. literally to

  960. change your

  961. mind,

  962. to not see

  963. this as a

  964. path we

  965. ought to

  966. pursue,

  967. but to

  968. see it as

  969. a path

  970. that should

  971. be rejected,

  972. discarded,

  973. because it

  974. is offensive

  975. to God,

  976. and to

  977. turn by

  978. faith in

  979. Christ to

  980. his

  981. person

  982. and his

  983. work,

  984. to who

  985. he is

  986. himself,

  987. and to

  988. all that

  989. he has

  990. accomplished

  991. on our

  992. behalf.

  993. Both of

  994. those are

  995. very key

  996. to understand.

  997. So Jesus

  998. says,

  999. I am the

  1000. resurrection

  1001. and the

  1002. life.

  1003. There is no

  1004. resurrection nor

  1005. eternal life

  1006. outside of

  1007. the Lord

  1008. Jesus Christ.

  1009. He does

  1010. this similarly

  1011. in other

  1012. places,

  1013. like in

  1014. John chapter

    John 6 chapter mention

  1015. 6.

  1016. He talks

  1017. about food

  1018. that doesn't

  1019. perish.

  1020. Verse 27,

  1021. do not work

  1022. for the food

  1023. that perishes,

  1024. but for the

  1025. food that

  1026. endures to

  1027. eternal life,

  1028. which the

  1029. Son of Man

  1030. will give

  1031. you,

  1032. for on

  1033. him God

  1034. the Father

  1035. has set

  1036. his seal.

  1037. So Jesus

  1038. will give

  1039. us the

  1040. sustenance

  1041. that endures

  1042. to eternal

  1043. life.

  1044. And then he

  1045. says in

  1046. verse 35,

  1047. I am

  1048. the bread

  1049. of life.

  1050. It's me.

  1051. I will

  1052. give you

  1053. myself.

  1054. Whoever

  1055. comes to

  1056. me shall

  1057. not hunger

  1058. and whoever

  1059. believes in

  1060. me shall

  1061. never thirst.

  1062. That's what

  1063. Jesus is

  1064. doing for

  1065. Martha,

  1066. whom he

  1067. loves.

  1068. She's

  1069. looking to

  1070. this abstract

  1071. future reality

  1072. that,

  1073. yeah,

  1074. yeah,

  1075. Jesus,

  1076. I know

  1077. Lazarus will

  1078. be raised

  1079. in that

  1080. final day

  1081. and he's

  1082. saying,

  1083. no,

  1084. I'm

  1085. standing

  1086. right in

  1087. front of

  1088. you right

  1089. now.

  1090. I am

  1091. the

  1092. resurrection

  1093. and the

  1094. life.

  1095. I'd

  1096. suggest to

  1097. you that

  1098. Martha has

  1099. faith and

  1100. Jesus is

  1101. bolstering her

  1102. faith with

  1103. this statement.

  1104. He goes on

  1105. to say,

  1106. whoever believes

  1107. in me,

  1108. though he

  1109. die,

  1110. yet shall

  1111. he live.

  1112. And everyone

  1113. who lives

  1114. and believes

  1115. in me

  1116. shall never

  1117. die.

  1118. He plays

  1119. with this

  1120. language.

  1121. Whoever

  1122. believes in

  1123. me,

  1124. who has

  1125. taken me

  1126. up,

  1127. we will

  1128. go through

  1129. an earthly

  1130. death,

  1131. but we

  1132. will live

  1133. spiritually

  1134. forever.

  1135. And the

  1136. one who

  1137. lives

  1138. spiritually

  1139. even now

  1140. will never

  1141. die

  1142. spiritually.

  1143. And then

  1144. he asks

  1145. the question,

  1146. do you

  1147. believe this?

  1148. Do you

  1149. believe this?

  1150. There should

  1151. be no

  1152. question to

  1153. us why

  1154. John might

  1155. structure this

  1156. text in

  1157. this way.

  1158. You've

  1159. heard me

  1160. say,

  1161. John chapter

    John 20:30

  1162. 20,

  1163. verse 30

  1164. and 31,

  1165. why did

  1166. John write

  1167. this gospel

  1168. account?

  1169. He says

  1170. there,

  1171. now Jesus

  1172. did many

  1173. other signs

  1174. in the

  1175. presence

  1176. of the

  1177. disciples,

  1178. which are

  1179. not written

  1180. in this

  1181. book.

  1182. But some

  1183. are,

  1184. are they

  1185. not?

  1186. Here in

  1187. John chapter

    John 11 chapter mention

  1188. 11,

  1189. we are about

  1190. to see

  1191. Jesus do

  1192. this work,

  1193. this sign

  1194. raising

  1195. Lazarus

  1196. from the

  1197. dead.

  1198. Verse 31,

  1199. John 20

  1200. says,

  1201. but these

  1202. are written

  1203. that you

  1204. may believe

  1205. that Jesus

  1206. is the

  1207. Christ,

  1208. the Son

  1209. of God,

  1210. and that

  1211. by believing

  1212. you may

  1213. have life.

  1214. in his

  1215. name.

  1216. Well,

  1217. I want us

  1218. to be the

  1219. kind of

  1220. people that

  1221. when we

  1222. read in

  1223. John chapter

    John 11 chapter mention

  1224. 11,

  1225. this statement

  1226. of our

  1227. Lord,

  1228. do you

  1229. believe this,

  1230. that our

  1231. minds are

  1232. triggered?

  1233. John chapter

    John 20 chapter mention

  1234. 20,

  1235. right?

  1236. That's why

  1237. John wrote

  1238. this.

  1239. Look at

  1240. what he's

  1241. doing as

  1242. he constructs

  1243. this text

  1244. under the

  1245. power of

  1246. the Spirit

  1247. to ask

  1248. the question

  1249. of us

  1250. today.

  1251. Jesus is

  1252. the

  1253. resurrection

  1254. and the

  1255. life.

  1256. Do you

  1257. believe this?

  1258. And she

  1259. responds,

  1260. yes,

  1261. Lord,

  1262. I believe

  1263. that you

  1264. are the

  1265. Christ,

  1266. the Son

  1267. of God,

  1268. who is

  1269. coming

  1270. into the

  1271. world.

  1272. Now,

  1273. notice with me

  1274. second,

  1275. so this is

  1276. Jesus'

  1277. arrival,

  1278. notice

  1279. secondly,

  1280. Jesus'

  1281. anger,

  1282. verses 28

  1283. through 33.

  1284. Now,

  1285. why would I

  1286. draw your

  1287. attention to

  1288. this portion

  1289. of text

  1290. by titling

  1291. it,

  1292. Jesus'

  1293. anger?

  1294. I hope

  1295. that was a

  1296. little bit

  1297. shocking to

  1298. you.

  1299. Because of

  1300. the phrase,

  1301. he was

  1302. deeply moved

  1303. in his

  1304. spirit and

  1305. greatly

  1306. troubled.

  1307. Now,

  1308. you may

  1309. have in

  1310. your Bible

  1311. a footnote

  1312. following

  1313. the first

  1314. part of

  1315. that phrase

  1316. that reads,

  1317. or was

  1318. indignant.

  1319. So it

  1320. could read,

  1321. he was

  1322. indignant

  1323. and greatly

  1324. troubled.

  1325. So what

  1326. are we

  1327. meant to

  1328. make of

  1329. this?

  1330. I use

  1331. the word

  1332. anger

  1333. first because

  1334. of its

  1335. alliteration

  1336. with my

  1337. other points.

  1338. Helpful

  1339. sometimes,

  1340. and I like

  1341. to do it

  1342. when I

  1343. can.

  1344. But,

  1345. more

  1346. importantly,

  1347. because I

  1348. think it

  1349. gets at

  1350. what John

  1351. is showing

  1352. us here.

  1353. This

  1354. Greek

  1355. root,

  1356. this is a

  1357. single word,

  1358. is used

  1359. only twice

  1360. in this

  1361. chapter and

  1362. four other

  1363. places in

  1364. the Gospels.

  1365. In those

  1366. places,

  1367. it's

  1368. translated,

  1369. sternly

  1370. warned,

  1371. or in the

  1372. case of

  1373. Mark,

    Mark 14 chapter mention

  1374. chapter 14

  1375. and verse

  1376. 5,

  1377. the

  1378. disciples,

  1379. a record

  1380. of Mary

  1381. anointing

  1382. Jesus

  1383. with the

  1384. ointment.

  1385. There are

  1386. 14, 5,

  1387. it says,

  1388. for this

  1389. ointment

  1390. could have

  1391. been sold

  1392. for more

  1393. than these

  1394. hundred

  1395. denarii

  1396. and given

  1397. to the

  1398. poor,

  1399. and they

  1400. scolded

  1401. her.

  1402. That's the

  1403. same verb

  1404. root

  1405. found

  1406. there.

  1407. This is

  1408. not a

  1409. soft

  1410. word.

  1411. I think

  1412. deeply

  1413. moved is

  1414. a fair

  1415. translation,

  1416. but it's

  1417. deeply moved

  1418. in a

  1419. particular

  1420. way.

  1421. Deeply

  1422. moved,

  1423. indignant,

  1424. angered in

  1425. his spirit

  1426. inside of

  1427. him,

  1428. and,

  1429. John adds,

  1430. greatly

  1431. troubled.

  1432. Now,

  1433. I think

  1434. what translators

  1435. are trying to

  1436. do is

  1437. they're trying

  1438. to connect

  1439. to this

  1440. idea of

  1441. Jesus

  1442. weeping.

  1443. How does

  1444. all of

  1445. this come

  1446. together?

  1447. He doesn't

  1448. say things

  1449. loudly.

  1450. There's not

  1451. rebuke that's

  1452. following here.

  1453. They're trying

  1454. to help us

  1455. wrap our

  1456. minds around

  1457. what's

  1458. happening,

  1459. but I

  1460. think it

  1461. comes up

  1462. short.

  1463. I'm thankful

  1464. for the

  1465. footnote,

  1466. at least

  1467. in my

  1468. Bible,

  1469. that says

  1470. was

  1471. indignant.

  1472. Additionally,

  1473. recall our

  1474. literary

  1475. structure,

  1476. and how

  1477. it's supposed

  1478. to help

  1479. us think

  1480. of the

  1481. rest of

  1482. the text.

  1483. Do you

  1484. remember,

  1485. right?

  1486. Do you

  1487. believe

  1488. this?

  1489. And we

  1490. have this

  1491. correspondence

  1492. between

  1493. Martha,

  1494. who comes,

  1495. expresses a

  1496. great measure

  1497. of faith,

  1498. Jesus,

  1499. asks the

  1500. question,

  1501. and then

  1502. Mary,

  1503. who is

  1504. delayed,

  1505. Jesus has

  1506. to request

  1507. that she

  1508. come to

  1509. him,

  1510. verse 28,

  1511. right?

  1512. Martha goes

  1513. back,

  1514. says to

  1515. Mary,

  1516. the teacher

  1517. is here

  1518. and is

  1519. calling for

  1520. you.

  1521. She gets

  1522. up quickly,

  1523. she goes,

  1524. the mourners

  1525. follow,

  1526. and when she

  1527. arrives to him,

  1528. she says the

  1529. exact same

  1530. thing that

  1531. Martha

  1532. said.

  1533. Lord,

  1534. if you had

  1535. been here,

  1536. my brother

  1537. would not

  1538. have died.

  1539. And then

  1540. John tells us

  1541. in verse 33,

  1542. there's no more

  1543. talking at this

  1544. point.

  1545. When Jesus

  1546. saw her

  1547. weeping,

  1548. and the Jews

  1549. who had come

  1550. with her also

  1551. weeping,

  1552. he was

  1553. deeply moved

  1554. in his spirit

  1555. and greatly

  1556. troubled.

  1557. I think

  1558. what John

  1559. is communicating

  1560. to us,

  1561. you see on

  1562. the one

  1563. side of

  1564. the literary

  1565. structure,

  1566. belief,

  1567. and on

  1568. the other

  1569. side,

  1570. unbelief.

  1571. Not just

  1572. grief,

  1573. but grief

  1574. without

  1575. hope.

  1576. So,

  1577. what is it

  1578. that Jesus

  1579. is angry

  1580. at?

  1581. D.A.

  1582. Carson

  1583. writes this,

  1584. quote,

  1585. some think

  1586. that Jesus

  1587. is moved

  1588. by their

  1589. grief,

  1590. and is

  1591. consequently

  1592. angry with

  1593. the sin,

  1594. sickness,

  1595. and death

  1596. in this

  1597. fallen world

  1598. that wreaks

  1599. so much

  1600. havoc

  1601. and generates

  1602. so much

  1603. sorrow.

  1604. Others

  1605. think that

  1606. the anger

  1607. is directed

  1608. at the

  1609. unbelief

  1610. itself.

  1611. The men

  1612. and women

  1613. before him

  1614. were grieving

  1615. like pagans,

  1616. like the

  1617. rest of men

  1618. who have

  1619. no hope,

  1620. 1 Thessalonians

  1621. 4.13.

  1622. Profound

  1623. grief

  1624. at such

  1625. bereavement

  1626. is natural

  1627. enough.

  1628. grief

  1629. that

  1630. degenerates

  1631. to despair

  1632. that pours

  1633. out its

  1634. loss

  1635. as if

  1636. there

  1637. was

  1638. no

  1639. resurrection

  1640. is an

  1641. implicit

  1642. denial

  1643. of that

  1644. resurrection.

  1645. Those are

  1646. the two

  1647. options.

  1648. And the

  1649. D.A.

  1650. Carson

  1651. says,

  1652. perhaps

  1653. these two

  1654. interpretations

  1655. are not

  1656. irreconcilable.

  1657. And I

  1658. think that

  1659. this

  1660. is right.

  1661. What Jesus

  1662. feels here

  1663. is a

  1664. righteous

  1665. anger

  1666. at

  1667. unbelief

  1668. and all

  1669. the problems

  1670. it has

  1671. caused,

  1672. starting all

  1673. the way back

  1674. in the

  1675. garden

  1676. and still

  1677. causes

  1678. today.

  1679. perhaps

  1680. you felt

  1681. this kind

  1682. of

  1683. righteous

  1684. indignation

  1685. at the

  1686. trouble

  1687. that is

  1688. experienced

  1689. in this

  1690. world.

  1691. We see

  1692. things be

  1693. not as

  1694. they ought

  1695. to be,

  1696. brought about

  1697. by that

  1698. original

  1699. unbelief

  1700. in the

  1701. garden

  1702. and

  1703. perpetuated

  1704. on by

  1705. unbelief.

  1706. and we

  1707. are

  1708. grieved

  1709. by it.

  1710. Greatly

  1711. troubled,

  1712. moved

  1713. within.

  1714. You don't

  1715. feel this

  1716. at the

  1717. tragedy

  1718. of this

  1719. world.

  1720. I think

  1721. that you

  1722. should.

  1723. I know

  1724. that I

  1725. do.

  1726. It's so

  1727. often

  1728. expressed

  1729. in me

  1730. when I

  1731. hear the

  1732. news

  1733. come across

  1734. my table,

  1735. whether that's

  1736. out there

  1737. somewhere

  1738. or within

  1739. our own

  1740. congregation.

  1741. I just

  1742. go,

  1743. come Lord

  1744. Jesus.

  1745. I need

  1746. the hope

  1747. of the

  1748. resurrection

  1749. in those

  1750. times.

  1751. I need

  1752. to believe

  1753. this.

  1754. Jesus is

  1755. the

  1756. resurrection

  1757. and the

  1758. life.

  1759. We have

  1760. hope in

  1761. this world.

  1762. We do

  1763. not grieve

  1764. as those

  1765. without

  1766. hope,

  1767. but those

  1768. with

  1769. hope.

  1770. I think

  1771. this is

  1772. what troubles

  1773. him.

  1774. these two

  1775. things.

  1776. Sin has

  1777. caused so

  1778. much and

  1779. it was

  1780. started with

  1781. unbelief and

  1782. then the

  1783. unbelief

  1784. carries on

  1785. in the

  1786. world.

  1787. Notice

  1788. lastly,

  1789. Jesus'

  1790. affection.

  1791. There's our

  1792. final A.

  1793. Jesus'

  1794. affection.

  1795. And he

  1796. said,

  1797. this is his

  1798. response to

  1799. this grievous

  1800. grieving that's

  1801. going on.

  1802. Where have

  1803. you laid

  1804. him?

  1805. They said

  1806. to him,

  1807. Lord,

  1808. come and

  1809. see.

  1810. Jesus

  1811. wept.

  1812. What's

  1813. happening

  1814. then here?

  1815. Jesus is

  1816. angry.

  1817. Why is it

  1818. that he

  1819. is weeping?

  1820. I think

  1821. he also

  1822. grieves.

  1823. Now,

  1824. the Jews

  1825. said,

  1826. see how

  1827. he loved

  1828. him.

  1829. And this

  1830. is a

  1831. misunderstanding

  1832. because

  1833. Jesus

  1834. certainly

  1835. loved

  1836. Lazarus.

  1837. Chapter 11,

  1838. verse 5,

  1839. tells us

  1840. this very

  1841. thing.

  1842. When he's

  1843. told to

  1844. come,

  1845. the one

  1846. whom you

  1847. love

  1848. is sick.

  1849. But Jesus

  1850. knew full

  1851. well that

  1852. he was

  1853. about to

  1854. see him

  1855. again.

  1856. The glorious

  1857. thing that

  1858. he was

  1859. about to

  1860. do.

  1861. So I

  1862. don't think

  1863. that Jesus

  1864. is weeping

  1865. over the

  1866. loss of

  1867. Lazarus.

  1868. this often

  1869. gets preached

  1870. that way.

  1871. I've heard

  1872. it time

  1873. and time

  1874. again.

  1875. I don't

  1876. think that's

  1877. what's going

  1878. on here

  1879. at all.

  1880. Another

  1881. misunderstanding.

  1882. Some of

  1883. them said,

  1884. could not

  1885. he who

  1886. opened the

  1887. eyes of

  1888. the blind

  1889. man also

  1890. have kept

  1891. this man

  1892. from dying?

  1893. There's a

  1894. faith being

  1895. expressed here

  1896. in the works

  1897. but not

  1898. in the

  1899. person.

  1900. On the

  1901. one hand,

  1902. it can be

  1903. read as an

  1904. honest question

  1905. but note

  1906. that Jesus'

  1907. response in

  1908. verse 38

  1909. he is

  1910. deeply

  1911. moved

  1912. again.

  1913. Once again

  1914. indignant,

  1915. righteously

  1916. angry.

  1917. So I

  1918. think verse

  1919. 35 when we

  1920. read that

  1921. Jesus weeps

  1922. we're meant

  1923. to see him

  1924. righteously

  1925. angry at

  1926. this hopeless

  1927. grief and

  1928. broken hearted.

  1929. An affection

  1930. for people

  1931. who will

  1932. not take

  1933. hold of

  1934. him as

  1935. the Christ.

  1936. A broken

  1937. heartedness,

  1938. a desire

  1939. to see

  1940. them.

  1941. He's right

  1942. there in

  1943. front of

  1944. them.

  1945. He's about

  1946. to do

  1947. this thing,

  1948. this miraculous

  1949. thing,

  1950. and yet

  1951. confused

  1952. about who

  1953. he is.

  1954. I'm going

  1955. to see

  1956. next week

  1957. some of

  1958. them are

  1959. going to

  1960. go off

  1961. and report

  1962. in order

  1963. to get

  1964. him in

  1965. trouble

  1966. about this

  1967. thing

  1968. that he

  1969. has done.

  1970. And so

  1971. this all

  1972. begs the

  1973. question,

  1974. do you

  1975. believe

  1976. Jesus

  1977. is the

  1978. resurrection

  1979. and the

  1980. life?

  1981. Because if

  1982. he is,

  1983. everything

  1984. changes.

  1985. If Jesus

  1986. is the

  1987. resurrection

  1988. and the

  1989. life,

  1990. then the

  1991. worst thing

  1992. this world

  1993. can do

  1994. to you

  1995. is not

  1996. the ultimate

  1997. thing.

  1998. If God

  1999. is for

  2000. us,

  2001. who can

  2002. be against

  2003. us?

  2004. If Jesus

  2005. is the

  2006. resurrection

  2007. and the

  2008. life,

  2009. then death

  2010. does not

  2011. own the

  2012. Christian.

  2013. If Jesus

  2014. is the

  2015. resurrection

  2016. and the

  2017. life,

  2018. then a

  2019. cemetery

  2020. is not

  2021. a permanent

  2022. residence

  2023. for the

  2024. bodies

  2025. of believers.

  2026. If Jesus

  2027. is the

  2028. resurrection

  2029. and the

  2030. life,

  2031. then every

  2032. Christian

  2033. funeral

  2034. takes place

  2035. under the

  2036. promise

  2037. of a

  2038. coming

  2039. resurrection.

  2040. We

  2041. grieve

  2042. with

  2043. hope.

  2044. One day

  2045. Christ

  2046. will speak

  2047. and the

  2048. dead

  2049. will

  2050. rise.

  2051. The

  2052. same

  2053. Jesus

  2054. who

  2055. will

  2056. stand

  2057. in front

  2058. of

  2059. Lazarus'

  2060. tomb

  2061. and cry,

  2062. Lazarus,

  2063. come out,

  2064. will one

  2065. day issue

  2066. a summons

  2067. heard by

  2068. every

  2069. grave.

  2070. The

  2071. dead

  2072. in Christ

  2073. will rise.

  2074. That is

  2075. not wishful

  2076. thinking,

  2077. that is

  2078. Christianity.

  2079. So

  2080. Christian,

  2081. you may

  2082. grieve.

  2083. You

  2084. will.

  2085. grieve.

  2086. Your

  2087. life may

  2088. not have

  2089. experienced

  2090. grief

  2091. yet,

  2092. but you

  2093. will

  2094. grieve.

  2095. Do

  2096. not imagine

  2097. that strong

  2098. faith

  2099. requires

  2100. stoicism.

  2101. There

  2102. will be

  2103. days

  2104. when you

  2105. cry,

  2106. days that

  2107. demand

  2108. tears.

  2109. There

  2110. will be

  2111. empty

  2112. rooms that

  2113. hurt to

  2114. enter.

  2115. There

  2116. will be

  2117. anniversaries

  2118. that reopen

  2119. wounds.

  2120. There

  2121. will be

  2122. moments

  2123. when a

  2124. smell,

  2125. a song,

  2126. a photograph,

  2127. some ordinary

  2128. object suddenly

  2129. brings back

  2130. the weight

  2131. of someone's

  2132. absence.

  2133. Grief is

  2134. real.

  2135. Jesus

  2136. wept.

  2137. But we

  2138. do not

  2139. grieve

  2140. without

  2141. hope.

  2142. We

  2143. hope in

  2144. Christ,

  2145. the

  2146. resurrection,

  2147. and the

  2148. life.

  2149. let's

  2150. pray

  2151. together.
