  1. Well amen and good morning. It's good to see each of you today. Please take your copy of God's Word this morning and turn with me once again to John chapter 11,

    John 11 chapter mention

  2. where we'll conclude our consideration of the raising of Lazarus from the dead. Because we have spent the last two weeks working our way carefully through this chapter, and because some of you may have not been with us for every part of the study,

  3. I want to begin by reminding us of the road that John has taken us in bringing us to this moment.

  4. Because what happens at the tomb in verses 38 through 44 cannot really be understood apart from everything Jesus has already said and done throughout the chapter.

  5. John 11 began with a problem that from the perspective of Mary and Martha seemed simple enough.

  6. Their brother Lazarus was sick.

  7. Jesus loved Lazarus and therefore the sisters sent word to Jesus with what was almost certainly the expectation that the one who had healed so many strangers would surely come quickly to help someone whom he personally loved.

  8. Yet from the very beginning, Jesus interpreted Lazarus' illness differently than everyone else did.

  9. Because whereas Mary and Martha saw an emergency that needed immediate intervention, Jesus saw an occasion through which the glory of God would be displayed.

  10. He says in verse 4,

  11. And that statement governs the entire chapter.

  12. Before Lazarus dies, before Jesus ever arrives in Bethany, before Martha comes running to meet him, before Mary falls weeping at his feet, and before Jesus stands outside the tomb,

  13. He has already told us what all of this is ultimately about.

  14. It is about the glory of God being revealed through the Son of God.

  15. And then as we saw when we began this chapter, John tells us something that initially seems almost impossible to reconcile with the love of Christ.

  16. John explicitly says that Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus, and then, rather than saying that because he loved them, he immediately left for Bethany,

  17. John says that because he loved them, he remained where he was for two additional days.

  18. In other words, the delay of Christ was not a contradiction of his love, it was an expression of his love.

  19. Because Jesus intended to give this family something far greater than the immediate relief that they were asking him to provide.

  20. They wanted Jesus to prevent Lazarus from dying.

  21. Jesus intended to reveal himself as the one who possesses authority over death itself.

  22. That distinction matters because it reminds us the love of God cannot always be measured by how quickly he delivers us from difficulty,

  23. nor can the goodness of God be assessed simply by comparing his providence with the outcome we would have preferred.

  24. There are times when the love of Christ leads him to give us precisely what we ask for.

  25. And there are other times when that same love, operating according to wisdom infinitely greater than our own,

  26. leads him to delay, to withhold, or even to take us through circumstances we would never have chosen for ourselves.

  27. The sisters prayed in effect, Lord, come and heal Lazarus.

  28. Jesus loved them too much merely to answer that prayer in the way they expected.

  29. As the chapter continues, Jesus eventually tells his disciples plainly that Lazarus has died,

  30. and then he adds something which, apart from everything else we know about him, might almost sound cruel.

  31. For your sake, I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe.

  32. Jesus is not glad that Lazarus suffered, nor is he delighted in the grief of these sisters.

  33. Rather, he is glad because he knows that what he is about to reveal concerning himself will strengthen the faith of his disciples

  34. in a way that merely preventing the sickness from ending in death never could.

  35. And so the themes emerge clearly.

  36. Glory, faith, resurrection life.

  37. By the time Jesus arrives in Bethany, Lazarus has already been in the tomb for days.

  38. And Martha, upon hearing that Jesus is approaching the village,

  39. goes out to meet him and says what has surely passed through the hearts of countless believers in moments of suffering.

  40. Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.

  41. There is faith in that statement, but also confusion.

  42. Martha believes Jesus possesses extraordinary power,

  43. but she cannot yet understand why he did not exercise that power when she wanted him to exercise it.

  44. And it is into that confusion that Jesus speaks perhaps the most important words in the entire chapter.

  45. I am the resurrection and the life.

  46. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live.

  47. Jesus does not merely tell Martha that he is capable of performing a resurrection.

  48. He tells her that resurrection is inseparably bound up with his own identity.

  49. I am the resurrection and the life.

  50. He is not merely one who possesses life.

  51. He is the life.

  52. He is not simply someone through whom resurrection may occur.

  53. He is the resurrection.

  54. Then he turns this great theological declaration toward Martha personally and asks,

  55. Do you believe this?

  56. Martha responds with that remarkable confession.

  57. Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.

  58. Then Mary comes and when she arrives, she falls at Jesus' feet and repeats the same words Martha had spoken.

  59. Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.

  60. Jesus sees Mary weeping.

  61. He sees the mourners around her weeping.

  62. He sees everything that sin and death have done to this family, their hopeless grief.

  63. And John tells us that he is deeply moved and greatly troubled.

  64. Then comes that simple sentence, Jesus wept.

  65. We saw last week that this is not merely the emotional response of a sympathetic friend,

  66. although it is certainly that.

  67. Rather, there is something deeper happening in Jesus.

  68. Because the language John uses conveys not only sorrow, but indignation.

  69. Jesus stands in the presence of death and is moved with holy anger.

  70. Jesus grieves because death and unbelief is an enemy.

  71. But he does not grieve as one who is powerless before that enemy.

  72. He is about to confront it.

  73. Christian hope does not eliminate grief.

  74. It gives grief something to hold on to.

  75. So with that, we come to John chapter 11, verses 38 through 44.

    John 11:38–44

  76. Let me pray for us before I read it.

  77. Father God, we thank you this morning for your word.

  78. We thank you that you have not left us to invent our own ideas about your son,

  79. but have given us this inspired testimony

  80. so that seeing who he is and understanding what he has done,

  81. we might believe that Jesus is the Christ.

  82. And that by believing, we might have life in his name.

  83. Guard us, we pray, from the kind of familiarity

  84. that allows us to read of a dead man walking out of a tomb

  85. without being astonished by the glory of Christ.

  86. Give us eyes to see him, ears to hear his word,

  87. faith to trust him, and hearts that delight in his glory.

  88. And Father, if there are those among us who remain spiritually dead in their sins,

  89. would you, through the gospel this morning,

  90. cause them to hear the voice of your son and live?

  91. We ask this in Jesus' name and for the glory of that name.

  92. Amen.

  93. John 11, I'll begin reading in verse 38.

  94. Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb.

  95. It was a cave and a stone lay against it.

  96. Jesus said, take away the stone.

  97. Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him,

  98. Lord, by this time there will be an odor, for he has been dead for days.

  99. Jesus said to her,

  100. did I not tell you that if you believe you would see the glory of God?

  101. So they took away the stone.

  102. And Jesus lifted up his eyes and said,

  103. Father, I thank you that you have heard me.

  104. I knew that you always hear me,

  105. but I said this on account of the people standing around,

  106. that they may believe that you sent me.

  107. When he had said these things,

  108. he cried out with a loud voice,

  109. Lazarus, come out.

  110. The man who had died came out,

  111. his hands and feet bound with linen strips,

  112. and his face wrapped with a cloth.

  113. Jesus said to them,

  114. unbind him and let him go.

  115. If you'll allow,

  116. I'd like to draw your attention to our text

  117. in four alliterated points.

  118. You know, I've heard the argument made at times

  119. that alliteration is meant to help us remember the points of a sermon,

  120. but I'm fully aware that too much is said in these sermons

  121. for you to really remember the points.

  122. I'm hoping that you might take notes

  123. or go back and listen to the recording later.

  124. So I want you to know that I alliterate just for fun.

  125. I spend a lot of time staring at words on a page,

  126. and so I just enjoy doing it.

  127. So there we are.

  128. The Baptist joke often seems appropriate.

  129. I don't do it for that reason.

  130. I do it because it's fun.

  131. So, number one,

  132. Jesus confronts death.

  133. We see these in these first two verses,

  134. and I've mentioned it already.

  135. John's description is almost startling in its simplicity.

  136. There's no attempt to dramatize the scene artificially

  137. because the facts themselves possess more than enough weight.

  138. There's a cave.

  139. There's a stone covering its entrance.

  140. There's a dead man inside,

  141. and standing outside is Jesus Christ,

  142. the one who has just declared himself

  143. to be the resurrection and the life.

  144. John tells us that Jesus is deeply moved again

  145. using the same strong language we encountered earlier in the chapter,

  146. which means that as Jesus approaches the tomb,

  147. he is not merely experiencing the sadness of a friend who has lost someone he loves.

  148. He is confronting with holy indignation the dreadful reality of death and unbelief itself.

  149. The Bible never treats death and unbelief as though it belonged to the original goodness of God's creation.

  150. When God created the world,

  151. he looked upon all that he had made and declared it very good.

  152. But death,

  153. doubt,

  154. entered through

  155. sin.

  156. So what now seems

  157. universal and unavoidable

  158. is nevertheless an intruder

  159. into the world

  160. that God made.

  161. Paul writing in 1 Corinthians chapter 15

    1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention

  162. does not call death our friend.

  163. He calls it the last enemy.

  164. That distinction is important

  165. because Christians

  166. sometimes speak about death so casually

  167. that we unintentionally say more

  168. than Scripture itself says.

  169. It is true that

  170. for the believer,

  171. death has lost its condemning power.

  172. It is true that

  173. to be absent from the body

  174. is to be present with the Lord.

  175. It is true that

  176. death cannot separate us

  177. from the love of God

  178. in Christ Jesus.

  179. But none of that means

  180. death itself

  181. has somehow

  182. become good.

  183. We were created for

  184. life with God

  185. and therefore

  186. when the eternal Son of God

  187. through whom all things were created

  188. comes face to face

  189. with the devastation

  190. death has brought

  191. into His creation.

  192. He is deeply moved.

  193. And He says in verse 39,

  194. take away the stone.

  195. Notice the authority

  196. with which Jesus speaks.

  197. He doesn't ask

  198. whether everyone is comfortable

  199. with the opening of the grave

  200. nor does He offer

  201. a lengthy explanation

  202. of what He intends to do.

  203. He simply commands

  204. that the stone be removed.

  205. And Martha immediately

  206. raises what

  207. from every ordinary

  208. human perspective

  209. is a perfectly reasonable

  210. objection.

  211. Lord,

  212. by this time

  213. there will be an odor

  214. for He has been

  215. dead for

  216. days.

  217. Fun fact,

  218. the King James

  219. renders this statement

  220. by Martha.

  221. Lord,

  222. by this time

  223. He stinketh.

  224. death.

  225. It's remarkably

  226. direct.

  227. But it communicates

  228. exactly what Martha

  229. understands about

  230. the situation.

  231. Jesus has told them

  232. to open a grave

  233. containing a body

  234. that has been dead

  235. for days.

  236. Martha is not denying

  237. Jesus' power

  238. in some abstract sense.

  239. She has already confessed

  240. that He is the Christ,

  241. the Son of God.

  242. What she is struggling with

  243. is the collision

  244. between what she believes

  245. about Jesus

  246. and what she knows

  247. about the body

  248. lying behind that stone.

  249. Lazarus is dead.

  250. Not recently.

  251. Not apparently.

  252. Not unconscious.

  253. Not hovering

  254. somewhere near death.

  255. Lazarus

  256. is dead

  257. and her faith

  258. is faltering.

  259. John is taking

  260. great care

  261. to remove

  262. every possible

  263. natural explanation

  264. for what is about

  265. to happen.

  266. Because Lazarus

  267. has been in the tomb

  268. long enough

  269. that decomposition

  270. has begun.

  271. And Martha knows it

  272. well.

  273. Lord,

  274. he stinketh.

  275. Now,

  276. a tomb allows us

  277. to place

  278. a boundary

  279. around death.

  280. We know what is inside

  281. but the stone

  282. prevents the side of it,

  283. sterilizes

  284. its reality.

  285. There's something

  286. merciful about burial

  287. for that very reason

  288. because we commit

  289. the bodies

  290. of those

  291. who we love

  292. to the ground

  293. rather than watching

  294. the process of decay

  295. unfold

  296. before us.

  297. But Jesus orders

  298. the boundary removed.

  299. He is about to

  300. confront death

  301. in all its

  302. ugliness.

  303. And this is where

  304. we need to remember

  305. that Christianity

  306. is not fundamentally

  307. a program

  308. designed to help

  309. basically healthy people

  310. become somewhat

  311. better versions

  312. of themselves.

  313. If our problem

  314. were merely

  315. ignorance,

  316. Jesus would have

  317. come

  318. as a teacher.

  319. If our problem

  320. were merely

  321. bad habits,

  322. Jesus would have

  323. come as a

  324. moral instructor.

  325. If our problem

  326. were merely

  327. political disorder,

  328. Jesus could have

  329. come as a statesman.

  330. If our problem

  331. were merely

  332. emotional instability,

  333. Jesus could have

  334. come

  335. as a counselor.

  336. And it comes

  337. as many of those

  338. things.

  339. But our problem

  340. fundamentally

  341. goes far deeper

  342. than any of

  343. those things

  344. because we are

  345. sinners

  346. standing under

  347. the sentence

  348. of death.

  349. Alienated from

  350. the God

  351. who made us

  352. and incapable

  353. of resurrecting

  354. and rescuing

  355. ourselves.

  356. Jesus did not

  357. come merely

  358. to improve

  359. our lives.

  360. He came

  361. to give

  362. life

  363. to the dead.

  364. And so,

  365. although His

  366. Lordship certainly

  367. transforms marriages

  368. and families,

  369. affects the way

  370. we work,

  371. teaches us how

  372. to forgive,

  373. changes how

  374. we handle money,

  375. and reshapes

  376. every dimension

  377. of human life,

  378. we must never

  379. reduce Christianity

  380. to just

  381. those

  382. things.

  383. The gospel

  384. is not fundamentally

  385. about becoming

  386. a nicer person.

  387. the gospel

  388. is about

  389. reconciliation

  390. with God

  391. through the

  392. death and

  393. resurrection

  394. of Jesus

  395. Christ.

  396. It is about

  397. resurrection.

  398. I have no doubt

  399. that Paul has

  400. this miracle

  401. in mind

  402. as he writes

  403. in Ephesians

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  404. chapter 2.

  405. And you were

  406. dead

  407. in the trespasses

  408. and sins

  409. in which you

  410. once walked,

  411. following the

  412. course of this

  413. world,

  414. following the

  415. prince of the

  416. power of the

  417. air,

  418. the spirit

  419. that is now

  420. in work

  421. and the

  422. sons of

  423. disobedience,

  424. among whom

  425. we all once

  426. lived in the

  427. passions of

  428. our flesh,

  429. carrying out

  430. the desires

  431. of the flesh

  432. and the mind,

  433. and were by

  434. nature children

  435. of wrath

  436. like the

  437. rest of

  438. mankind.

  439. But God,

  440. being rich

  441. in mercy,

  442. because of the

  443. great love

  444. with which he

  445. loved us,

  446. even when we

  447. were dead

  448. in our

  449. trespasses,

  450. made us

  451. alive together

  452. with Christ.

  453. By grace

  454. you have been

  455. saved,

  456. and raised us

  457. up with him

  458. and seated us

  459. with him in

  460. the heavenly

  461. places in

  462. Christ Jesus,

  463. so that in

  464. the coming

  465. ages he

  466. might show

  467. the immeasurable

  468. riches of his

  469. grace and

  470. kindness toward

  471. us in

  472. Christ Jesus.

  473. Jesus we

  474. see first

  475. confront

  476. death.

  477. Second,

  478. Jesus calls

  479. us to see

  480. his glory.

  481. Verse 40,

  482. Jesus responds

  483. to Martha,

  484. did I not

  485. tell you that

  486. if you

  487. believed you

  488. would see

  489. the glory

  490. of God?

  491. Now the

  492. great theme

  493. has governed

  494. this entire

  495. chapter returns.

  496. Jesus began

  497. by saying that

  498. Lazarus'

  499. sickness was

  500. for the glory

  501. of God so

  502. that the

  503. Son of God

  504. might be

  505. glorified through

  506. it, and

  507. now standing

  508. outside the

  509. tomb with

  510. Martha

  511. understandably

  512. concerned about

  513. what will

  514. happen when

  515. the stone

  516. is removed,

  517. Jesus calls

  518. her back to

  519. what he

  520. has already

  521. said.

  522. Did I

  523. not tell

  524. you?

  525. That question

  526. is more

  527. important than

  528. we might

  529. initially realize,

  530. because Jesus

  531. does not answer

  532. Martha primarily

  533. by giving her

  534. new information,

  535. he answers her

  536. by reminding

  537. her of the

  538. word she

  539. has already

  540. received.

  541. And very

  542. often, that

  543. is precisely

  544. what struggling

  545. faith needs.

  546. There are

  547. seasons in the

  548. Christian life

  549. when what we

  550. most desperately

  551. require is not

  552. some new

  553. revelation from

  554. God, but a

  555. renewed grasp

  556. of what God

  557. has already

  558. revealed.

  559. We are slow

  560. learners and

  561. quick to

  562. forget,

  563. particularly

  564. when suffering

  565. narrows our

  566. vision.

  567. We know

  568. that God

  569. is sovereign,

  570. but the

  571. circumstances

  572. begin to

  573. unravel and

  574. we find

  575. ourselves

  576. behaving as

  577. though he

  578. has lost

  579. control.

  580. We know

  581. that Christ

  582. loves his

  583. people, but

  584. then he

  585. delays in

  586. answering a

  587. prayer and

  588. we begin to

  589. interpret

  590. silence as

  591. indifference.

  592. We know

  593. that the

  594. promises of

  595. God are

  596. certain,

  597. but then

  598. death,

  599. sickness,

  600. disappointment,

  601. fear,

  602. occupies the

  603. whole field

  604. of vision and

  605. suddenly the

  606. things we

  607. confessed yesterday

  608. seemed much

  609. more difficult

  610. to believe

  611. today.

  612. At that

  613. point, the

  614. written word

  615. comes to us

  616. as Jesus

  617. comes to

  618. Martha and

  619. asks,

  620. did I not

  621. tell you?

  622. Did I not

  623. tell you that

  624. I am the

  625. resurrection and

  626. the life?

  627. Did I not

  628. tell you that

  629. whoever believes

  630. in me,

  631. though he

  632. die,

  633. yet shall

  634. he live?

  635. Did I not

  636. tell you that

  637. no one can

  638. snatch my

  639. sheep from

  640. my hand?

  641. Did I not

  642. tell you that

  643. all things

  644. work together

  645. for good for

  646. those who

  647. love God

  648. and are

  649. called according

  650. to his

  651. purpose?

  652. Did I not

  653. tell you that

  654. nothing in all

  655. creation can

  656. separate you from

  657. the love of

  658. God in

  659. Christ

  660. Jesus?

  661. faith does

  662. not require

  663. us to

  664. know

  665. everything

  666. God

  667. is doing.

  668. Faith

  669. requires us

  670. to trust

  671. what God

  672. has said.

  673. And Jesus

  674. tells Martha

  675. that through

  676. believing she

  677. will see

  678. the glory

  679. of God.

  680. And Jesus

  681. tells Martha

  682. that if she

  683. will grasp

  684. hold of this

  685. reality,

  686. she will

  687. be enthralled.

  688. Now we need

  689. to be careful

  690. with these

  691. words because

  692. this verse

  693. has sometimes

  694. been interpreted

  695. as though

  696. Martha's faith

  697. itself were

  698. the force

  699. that would

  700. make the

  701. miracle possible.

  702. As though

  703. Jesus was

  704. saying that

  705. if she

  706. could summon

  707. enough

  708. confidence,

  709. her faith

  710. would unlock

  711. divine power.

  712. That cannot

  713. possibly be

  714. the point.

  715. The power

  716. of this

  717. passage does

  718. not belong

  719. to Martha's

  720. faith.

  721. The power

  722. belongs to

  723. Jesus Christ.

  724. Lazarus

  725. will not

  726. walk out

  727. of the

  728. tomb

  729. because

  730. Martha

  731. has

  732. finally

  733. achieved

  734. the

  735. proper

  736. psychological

  737. condition.

  738. He will

  739. walk out

  740. of the

  741. tomb

  742. because

  743. the

  744. Son of

  745. God

  746. possesses

  747. authority

  748. to give

  749. life

  750. to the

  751. dead.

  752. Faith

  753. does not

  754. create

  755. the glory

  756. of Christ.

  757. Faith

  758. beholds

  759. the glory

  760. that already

  761. belongs

  762. to Christ.

  763. That is

  764. an enormously

  765. important

  766. distinction,

  767. particularly

  768. in an age

  769. when faith

  770. is so often

  771. treated as

  772. though it

  773. were a

  774. force

  775. within us

  776. by which

  777. we manipulate

  778. outcomes.

  779. Biblical

  780. faith is

  781. not confidence

  782. in

  783. confidence.

  784. It is not

  785. believing

  786. strongly

  787. enough that

  788. something

  789. desirable

  790. will happen.

  791. Biblical

  792. faith

  793. has an

  794. object.

  795. It

  796. rests upon

  797. the character,

  798. promises,

  799. and person

  800. of God

  801. supremely

  802. revealed

  803. in Jesus

  804. Christ.

  805. And that

  806. brings us

  807. to the

  808. question,

  809. what exactly

  810. is the

  811. glory Martha

  812. is about

  813. to see?

  814. Certainly

  815. she is going

  816. to witness

  817. something

  818. spectacular

  819. because her

  820. brother is

  821. about to

  822. walk out

  823. of his

  824. tomb.

  825. But in

  826. John's

  827. gospel,

  828. the glory

  829. of God

  830. is never

  831. merely

  832. spectacle.

  833. John told

  834. us at the

  835. very beginning

  836. of the

  837. gospel that

  838. the eternal

  839. word became

  840. flesh and

  841. dwelt among

  842. us, and

  843. that in

  844. him the

  845. disciples

  846. beheld

  847. the glory

  848. of the

  849. only Son

  850. from the

  851. Father.

  852. In other

  853. words, the

  854. glory of God

  855. is being

  856. revealed in

  857. the person

  858. of Jesus

  859. Christ.

  860. If you

  861. want to

  862. know what

  863. God is

  864. like,

  865. look at

  866. the Son.

  867. This

  868. morning as

  869. we consider

  870. Christ standing

  871. outside the

  872. tomb, behold

  873. your God.

  874. This

  875. morning as

  876. we look

  877. and read

  878. testimony of

  879. the resurrection

  880. of Lazarus,

  881. behold your

  882. God.

  883. Faith

  884. beholds the

  885. glory of

  886. Christ.

  887. So when

  888. Jesus tells

  889. Martha that

  890. she will see

  891. the glory of

  892. God, he

  893. is not merely

  894. promising her

  895. an extraordinary

  896. moment.

  897. He is

  898. inviting her

  899. to see

  900. more clearly

  901. who he

  902. is.

  903. And

  904. Christian

  905. faith still

  906. does exactly

  907. that.

  908. Faith looks

  909. through the

  910. providence.

  911. It cannot

  912. explain to

  913. the Christ

  914. whose

  915. character

  916. it knows.

  917. And

  918. consider how

  919. remarkable

  920. the revelation

  921. is here.

  922. Jesus

  923. firstly

  924. confronts

  925. death.

  926. Secondly

  927. calls us

  928. to see

  929. his glory.

  930. Thirdly

  931. Jesus

  932. communes

  933. with the

  934. Father.

  935. Verses

  936. 41

  937. and 42

  938. so they

  939. took away

  940. the stone

  941. and Jesus

  942. lifted up

  943. his eyes

  944. and said

  945. Father I

  946. thank you

  947. that you

  948. have heard

  949. me.

  950. I knew

  951. that you

  952. always hear

  953. me but I

  954. said this

  955. on account

  956. of the

  957. people

  958. standing

  959. around

  960. that they

  961. may believe

  962. that you

  963. sent me.

  964. For those

  965. keeping score

  966. this is

  967. I argue

  968. the chiastic

  969. center

  970. of the

  971. text.

  972. Although we

  973. have not

  974. arrived at

  975. the middle

  976. of the

  977. sermon.

  978. verse 41

  979. begins

  980. so they

  981. took away

  982. the stone.

  983. There's a

  984. quiet beauty

  985. in the

  986. simplicity

  987. of that

  988. obedience.

  989. Jesus has

  990. spoken

  991. Martha has

  992. expressed her

  993. concern

  994. Jesus is a

  995. reminder her

  996. of his

  997. promise

  998. and now

  999. the stone

  1000. is removed.

  1001. Then John

  1002. tells us

  1003. and Jesus

  1004. lifted up

  1005. his eyes

  1006. and said

  1007. father I

  1008. thank you

  1009. that you

  1010. have heard

  1011. me.

  1012. Before

  1013. Jesus speaks

  1014. to Lazarus

  1015. he speaks

  1016. to his

  1017. father and

  1018. for a

  1019. moment

  1020. John allows

  1021. us to

  1022. overhear

  1023. something of

  1024. the communion

  1025. that exists

  1026. eternally

  1027. between the

  1028. father and

  1029. the son.

  1030. This

  1031. relationship

  1032. has been

  1033. one of the

  1034. dominant themes

  1035. of John's

  1036. gospel from

  1037. the beginning.

  1038. The son is

  1039. from the

  1040. father.

  1041. The son is

  1042. sent by the

  1043. father.

  1044. The son

  1045. speaks the

  1046. words of

  1047. the father.

  1048. The son

  1049. performs the

  1050. works of

  1051. the father.

  1052. The father

  1053. loves the

  1054. son.

  1055. The son

  1056. perfectly

  1057. delights in

  1058. the will

  1059. of the

  1060. father.

  1061. There is

  1062. no competition

  1063. within the

  1064. Godhead.

  1065. No disagreement

  1066. of purpose.

  1067. No reluctant

  1068. father whom

  1069. the compassionate

  1070. son must

  1071. somehow persuade

  1072. to be

  1073. merciful.

  1074. Father and

  1075. son act in

  1076. perfect

  1077. unity.

  1078. me.

  1079. And so

  1080. Jesus lifts

  1081. his eyes

  1082. and says

  1083. father I

  1084. thank you

  1085. that you

  1086. have heard

  1087. me.

  1088. Notice the

  1089. tense.

  1090. Jesus does

  1091. not say

  1092. father I

  1093. hope you

  1094. will hear

  1095. me nor

  1096. does he

  1097. say father

  1098. please decide

  1099. now whether

  1100. you will

  1101. grant my

  1102. request.

  1103. He thanks

  1104. the father

  1105. that he

  1106. has heard

  1107. him.

  1108. Whatever

  1109. communion has

  1110. already passed

  1111. between father

  1112. and son

  1113. concerning

  1114. Lazarus is

  1115. not recorded

  1116. for us.

  1117. But Jesus

  1118. thanksgiving

  1119. makes clear

  1120. that the

  1121. miracle about

  1122. to occur

  1123. is the

  1124. outworking

  1125. of their

  1126. perfect

  1127. agreement.

  1128. Then he

  1129. says in

  1130. verse 42

  1131. I knew

  1132. that you

  1133. always

  1134. hear me.

  1135. There has

  1136. never been

  1137. nor could

  1138. there ever

  1139. be a

  1140. defect in

  1141. the communion

  1142. between the

  1143. father and

  1144. the son.

  1145. Every prayer

  1146. of Jesus

  1147. arises from

  1148. perfect

  1149. righteousness

  1150. perfect

  1151. wisdom

  1152. perfect

  1153. submission

  1154. and perfect

  1155. fellowship

  1156. with his

  1157. father.

  1158. And that

  1159. matters

  1160. because

  1161. Lazarus'

  1162. resurrection

  1163. is not

  1164. intended

  1165. merely to

  1166. demonstrate

  1167. that Jesus

  1168. is a

  1169. powerful

  1170. miracle

  1171. worker.

  1172. It reveals

  1173. his identity

  1174. who he

  1175. is.

  1176. Back in

  1177. John 5

  1178. which in a

  1179. broader

  1180. chiastic

  1181. structure

  1182. corresponds

  1183. with this

  1184. chapter

  1185. after Jesus

  1186. healed the

  1187. man at

  1188. the pool

  1189. of Bethesda

  1190. and the

  1191. religious

  1192. leaders

  1193. became

  1194. enraged

  1195. because he

  1196. was making

  1197. himself

  1198. equal with

  1199. God

  1200. Jesus

  1201. explained

  1202. that the

  1203. son does

  1204. what he

  1205. sees the

  1206. father

  1207. doing.

  1208. And among

  1209. the divine

  1210. works

  1211. Jesus

  1212. explicitly

  1213. claimed for

  1214. himself

  1215. was

  1216. the giving

  1217. of life.

  1218. He said

  1219. for as the

  1220. father raises

  1221. the dead

  1222. and gives

  1223. them life

  1224. so also

  1225. the son

  1226. gives life

  1227. to whom

  1228. he will.

  1229. Now

  1230. several

  1231. chapters

  1232. later

  1233. the truth

  1234. of that

  1235. claim

  1236. stands

  1237. before us

  1238. in visible

  1239. form.

  1240. The father

  1241. gives life

  1242. the son

  1243. gives life

  1244. the father

  1245. and son

  1246. are not

  1247. competing

  1248. agents

  1249. but act

  1250. together

  1251. in the

  1252. work of

  1253. God.

  1254. And

  1255. therefore

  1256. when Jesus

  1257. stands in

  1258. front of

  1259. Lazarus

  1260. grave

  1261. and prepares

  1262. to call

  1263. him out

  1264. we are

  1265. seeing

  1266. more than

  1267. a prophet

  1268. through whom

  1269. God

  1270. happens

  1271. to perform

  1272. an

  1273. extraordinary

  1274. miracle.

  1275. We are

  1276. seeing

  1277. the divine

  1278. son

  1279. exercising

  1280. the life

  1281. giving

  1282. authority

  1283. he shares

  1284. with the

  1285. father.

  1286. Jesus

  1287. then

  1288. explains

  1289. why

  1290. he has

  1291. prayed

  1292. aloud.

  1293. I said

  1294. this

  1295. on account

  1296. of the

  1297. people

  1298. standing

  1299. around.

  1300. In other

  1301. words

  1302. the prayer

  1303. is not

  1304. necessary

  1305. because

  1306. the father

  1307. needs

  1308. information

  1309. or

  1310. persuasion

  1311. Jesus

  1312. prays

  1313. audibly

  1314. for the

  1315. benefit

  1316. of the

  1317. crowd

  1318. and why

  1319. to what

  1320. end

  1321. to what

  1322. benefit

  1323. that they

  1324. may

  1325. believe

  1326. that you

  1327. sent

  1328. me.

  1329. For those

  1330. of you

  1331. who don't

  1332. know

  1333. I'm a

  1334. type 1

  1335. diabetic

  1336. my phone

  1337. is on

  1338. silent

  1339. but not

  1340. when my

  1341. blood

  1342. sugar is

  1343. dropping

  1344. so that's

  1345. what's

  1346. beeping

  1347. very loudly

  1348. I'm

  1349. okay

  1350. don't

  1351. worry

  1352. about

  1353. me

  1354. my

  1355. little

  1356. stumbles

  1357. over

  1358. words

  1359. have

  1360. been

  1361. because

  1362. I

  1363. think

  1364. my

  1365. blood

  1366. sugar

  1367. is

  1368. dropping

  1369. but

  1370. we're

  1371. going

  1372. to

  1373. make

  1374. it

  1375. through

  1376. I'm

  1377. going

  1378. to

  1379. make

  1380. it

  1381. to

  1382. a

  1383. glass

  1384. of

  1385. juice

  1386. my

  1387. lovely

  1388. wife

  1389. is

  1390. going

  1391. to

  1392. go

  1393. get

  1394. me

  1395. one

  1396. right

  1397. now

  1398. thank

  1399. you

  1400. Sam

  1401. I

  1402. don't

  1403. think

  1404. I

  1405. could

  1406. tell

  1407. her

  1408. no

  1409. at

  1410. this

  1411. point

  1412. so

  1413. she'll

  1414. bring

  1415. it

  1416. up

  1417. here

  1418. momentarily

  1419. this

  1420. is

  1421. another

  1422. great

  1423. theme

  1424. of

  1425. the

  1426. chapter

  1427. right

  1428. not

  1429. only

  1430. glory

  1431. but

  1432. belief

  1433. Jesus

  1434. said

  1435. the

  1436. disciples

  1437. would

  1438. believe

  1439. he

  1440. asked

  1441. Martha

  1442. whether

  1443. she

  1444. believed

  1445. now

  1446. he

  1447. prays

  1448. so

  1449. that

  1450. the

  1451. crowd

  1452. might

  1453. believe

  1454. and

  1455. eventually

  1456. John

  1457. will

  1458. tell

  1459. us

  1460. that's

  1461. why

  1462. he

  1463. wrote

  1464. the

  1465. gospel

  1466. itself

  1467. John

  1468. 20

  1469. you've

  1470. heard

  1471. this

  1472. many

  1473. times

  1474. verse

  1475. 30

  1476. and

  1477. 31

  1478. Jesus

  1479. did

  1480. many

  1481. other

  1482. signs

  1483. in the

  1484. presence

  1485. of

  1486. the

  1487. disciples

  1488. which

  1489. are

  1490. not

  1491. written

  1492. in

  1493. this

  1494. book

  1495. but

  1496. these

  1497. are

  1498. written

  1499. so

  1500. that

  1501. you

  1502. may

  1503. believe

  1504. that

  1505. Jesus

  1506. is

  1507. the

  1508. Christ

  1509. the

  1510. Son

  1511. of

  1512. God

  1513. and

  1514. that

  1515. by

  1516. believing

  1517. you

  1518. may

  1519. have

  1520. life

  1521. in

  1522. his

  1523. name

  1524. the

  1525. signs

  1526. are

  1527. never

  1528. intended

  1529. to

  1530. terminate

  1531. upon

  1532. themselves

  1533. they're

  1534. not

  1535. the

  1536. point

  1537. John

  1538. does not

  1539. want us

  1540. merely to

  1541. walk away

  1542. saying

  1543. what an

  1544. astonishing

  1545. miracle

  1546. he

  1547. wants

  1548. us

  1549. to

  1550. ask

  1551. what

  1552. does

  1553. this

  1554. miracle

  1555. reveal

  1556. about

  1557. Jesus

  1558. and

  1559. the

  1560. answer

  1561. is that

  1562. Jesus

  1563. is the

  1564. Christ

  1565. the

  1566. Son

  1567. sent

  1568. by

  1569. the

  1570. Father

  1571. the

  1572. one

  1573. in

  1574. whom

  1575. life

  1576. is

  1577. found

  1578. Jesus

  1579. confronts

  1580. death

  1581. number

  1582. one

  1583. Jesus

  1584. calls

  1585. us

  1586. to

  1587. see

  1588. his

  1589. glory

  1590. number

  1591. two

  1592. Jesus

  1593. communes

  1594. with

  1595. the

  1596. Father

  1597. number

  1598. three

  1599. and

  1600. lastly

  1601. Jesus

  1602. commands

  1603. the

  1604. dead

  1605. to

  1606. live

  1607. we

  1608. see

  1609. this

  1610. in

  1611. the

  1612. last

  1613. two

  1614. verses

  1615. in

  1616. closing

  1617. when

  1618. he

  1619. said

  1620. these

  1621. things

  1622. he

  1623. cried

  1624. out

  1625. with

  1626. a

  1627. loud

  1628. voice

  1629. Lazarus

  1630. come

  1631. out

  1632. and

  1633. that

  1634. was

  1635. fun

  1636. we

  1637. will

  1638. forever

  1639. remember

  1640. that

  1641. stain

  1642. and

  1643. where

  1644. it

  1645. came

  1646. from

  1647. now

  1648. we

  1649. arrive

  1650. at

  1651. the

  1652. moment

  1653. toward

  1654. which

  1655. the

  1656. entire

  1657. chapter

  1658. has

  1659. been

  1660. moving

  1661. when

  1662. he

  1663. had

  1664. said

  1665. these

  1666. things

  1667. Lazarus

  1668. come

  1669. out

  1670. perhaps

  1671. the

  1672. most

  1673. astonishing

  1674. feature

  1675. of

  1676. the

  1677. miracle

  1678. is

  1679. the

  1680. complete

  1681. absence

  1682. of

  1683. pomp

  1684. there

  1685. is

  1686. no

  1687. ritual

  1688. there

  1689. is

  1690. no

  1691. incantation

  1692. there

  1693. is

  1694. no

  1695. elaborate

  1696. ceremony

  1697. jesus

  1698. does

  1699. not

  1700. plead

  1701. with

  1702. death

  1703. negotiate

  1704. with

  1705. death

  1706. or

  1707. engage

  1708. in

  1709. some

  1710. cosmic

  1711. contest

  1712. whose

  1713. outcome

  1714. remains

  1715. uncertain

  1716. until

  1717. the

  1718. final

  1719. moment

  1720. he

  1721. simply

  1722. speaks

  1723. and

  1724. the

  1725. dead

  1726. man

  1727. obeys

  1728. that

  1729. should

  1730. be

  1731. astonishing

  1732. to

  1733. us

  1734. we

  1735. are

  1736. not

  1737. dualists

  1738. thinking

  1739. that

  1740. somehow

  1741. the

  1742. battle

  1743. between

  1744. light

  1745. and

  1746. death

  1747. is

  1748. not

  1749. already

  1750. settled

  1751. jesus

  1752. simply

  1753. says

  1754. lazarus

  1755. come

  1756. out

  1757. i think

  1758. our

  1759. familiarity

  1760. with

  1761. the

  1762. story

  1763. sometimes

  1764. prevents

  1765. us

  1766. from

  1767. feeling

  1768. the

  1769. force

  1770. of

  1771. what

  1772. john

  1773. records

  1774. imagine

  1775. that you

  1776. have been

  1777. there

  1778. you have

  1779. watched

  1780. lazarus

  1781. become

  1782. sick

  1783. you have

  1784. heard

  1785. that he

  1786. died

  1787. perhaps

  1788. you

  1789. had

  1790. helped

  1791. wash

  1792. and

  1793. prepare

  1794. the

  1795. body

  1796. you

  1797. have

  1798. attended

  1799. the

  1800. burial

  1801. you

  1802. watched

  1803. as

  1804. his

  1805. body

  1806. was

  1807. carried

  1808. into

  1809. the

  1810. doom

  1811. and

  1812. the

  1813. stone

  1814. rolled

  1815. across

  1816. the

  1817. opening

  1818. four

  1819. days

  1820. have

  1821. now

  1822. passed

  1823. and

  1824. you

  1825. have

  1826. spent

  1827. those

  1828. days

  1829. sitting

  1830. with

  1831. the

  1832. sisters

  1833. bringing

  1834. food

  1835. speaking

  1836. words

  1837. of

  1838. comfort

  1839. and

  1840. doing

  1841. what

  1842. people

  1843. have

  1844. always

  1845. done

  1846. in

  1847. the

  1848. face

  1849. of

  1850. death

  1851. grieving

  1852. because

  1853. there's

  1854. nothing

  1855. else

  1856. that

  1857. you

  1858. can

  1859. do

  1860. then

  1861. Jesus

  1862. arrives

  1863. !

  1864. into

  1865. the

  1866. darkness

  1867. of

  1868. the

  1869. tomb

  1870. perhaps

  1871. already

  1872. recoiling

  1873. at

  1874. the

  1875. spell

  1876. that

  1877. Martha

  1878. had

  1879. warned

  1880. them

  1881. about

  1882. and

  1883. Jesus

  1884. cries

  1885. with a

  1886. loud

  1887. voice

  1888. Lazarus

  1889. come out

  1890. then

  1891. from

  1892. inside

  1893. the

  1894. tomb

  1895. there

  1896. is

  1897. movement

  1898. the

  1899. man

  1900. you

  1901. buried

  1902. walks

  1903. out

  1904. John

  1905. records

  1906. it

  1907. with

  1908. such

  1909. understatement

  1910. the

  1911. man

  1912. who

  1913. had

  1914. died

  1915. came

  1916. out

  1917. this

  1918. is

  1919. exactly

  1920. what

  1921. Jesus

  1922. said

  1923. earlier

  1924. in

  1925. John's

  1926. gospel

  1927. would

  1928. happen

  1929. in

  1930. John

  1931. 5

  1932. he

  1933. declared

  1934. that

  1935. the

  1936. hour

  1937. is

  1938. coming

  1939. when

  1940. the

  1941. dead

  1942. will

  1943. hear

  1944. the

  1945. voice

  1946. of

  1947. the

  1948. Son

  1949. of

  1950. God

  1951. and

  1952. those

  1953. who

  1954. hear

  1955. will

  1956. live

  1957. what

  1958. happens

  1959. in

  1960. Bethany

  1961. is

  1962. therefore

  1963. not

  1964. merely

  1965. an

  1966. isolated

  1967. demonstration

  1968. of

  1969. miraculous

  1970. power

  1971. it

  1972. is

  1973. a

  1974. preview

  1975. of

  1976. the

  1977. life

  1978. giving

  1979. authority

  1980. that

  1981. belongs

  1982. to

  1983. the

  1984. Son

  1985. and

  1986. a

  1987. sign

  1988. pointing

  1989. forward

  1990. to

  1991. the

  1992. final

  1993. resurrection

  1994. there is

  1995. a connection

  1996. here

  1997. I think

  1998. with the

  1999. opening

  2000. chapter

  2001. of

  2002. John's

  2003. gospel

  2004. where

  2005. Jesus

  2006. identified

  2007. as

  2008. the

  2009. eternal

  2010. word

  2011. through

  2012. whom

  2013. all

  2014. things

  2015. were

  2016. made

  2017. in

  2018. Genesis

  2019. God

  2020. created

  2021. by

  2022. speaking

  2023. let

  2024. there

  2025. be

  2026. light

  2027. and

  2028. light

  2029. appears

  2030. God's

  2031. word

  2032. does

  2033. not

  2034. merely

  2035. describe

  2036. reality

  2037. God's

  2038. word

  2039. brings

  2040. reality

  2041. into

  2042. existence

  2043. and

  2044. now

  2045. the

  2046. eternal

  2047. word

  2048. through

  2049. whom

  2050. creation

  2051. was

  2052. made

  2053. stands

  2054. in

  2055. front

  2056. of

  2057. a

  2058. grave

  2059. created

  2060. by

  2061. the

  2062. consequences

  2063. of

  2064. sin

  2065. speaks

  2066. into

  2067. the

  2068. darkness

  2069. and

  2070. where

  2071. there

  2072. was

  2073. death

  2074. there

  2075. is

  2076. life

  2077. the

  2078. creator

  2079. exercising

  2080. his

  2081. authority

  2082. over

  2083. his

  2084. creation

  2085. and

  2086. at

  2087. least

  2088. three

  2089. great

  2090. truths

  2091. emerge

  2092. from

  2093. this

  2094. moment

  2095. first

  2096. Jesus

  2097. possesses

  2098. absolute

  2099. authority

  2100. over

  2101. physical

  2102. death

  2103. Lazarus

  2104. contributes

  2105. absolutely

  2106. nothing

  2107. to his

  2108. resurrection

  2109. which is

  2110. obvious

  2111. enough

  2112. once

  2113. we say

  2114. it

  2115. the

  2116. theological

  2117. significance

  2118. is

  2119. enormous

  2120. thank you

  2121. babe

  2122. if you

  2123. were

  2124. listening

  2125. to this

  2126. recording

  2127. I

  2128. spilled

  2129. I spilled

  2130. juice

  2131. all over

  2132. the

  2133. stage

  2134. and

  2135. now

  2136. my

  2137. wife

  2138. loves

  2139. me

  2140. enough

  2141. to

  2142. bring

  2143. me

  2144. another

  2145. cup

  2146. and

  2147. paper

  2148. towels

  2149. to

  2150. mop

  2151. up

  2152. my

  2153. mess

  2154. sorry

  2155. for

  2156. the

  2157. distraction

  2158. in

  2159. case

  2160. you

  2161. thought

  2162. I

  2163. was

  2164. a

  2165. handsome

  2166. robot

  2167. that's

  2168. an

  2169. old

  2170. ongoing

  2171. joke

  2172. right

  2173. Lazarus

  2174. has done

  2175. nothing

  2176. to make

  2177. this

  2178. possible

  2179. right

  2180. Lazarus

  2181. does not

  2182. hear the

  2183. command of

  2184. Jesus

  2185. evaluate

  2186. the

  2187. evidence

  2188. consider

  2189. whether

  2190. the

  2191. resurrection

  2192. would be

  2193. desirable

  2194. and then

  2195. cooperate

  2196. by summoning

  2197. enough

  2198. strength

  2199. to come

  2200. back

  2201. to life

  2202. he's

  2203. dead

  2204. Jesus

  2205. supplies

  2206. everything

  2207. necessary

  2208. Jesus

  2209. calls

  2210. Jesus

  2211. gives

  2212. life

  2213. now we

  2214. should

  2215. distinguish

  2216. carefully

  2217. between

  2218. Lazarus

  2219. resurrection

  2220. and the

  2221. resurrection

  2222. Jesus

  2223. himself

  2224. will

  2225. soon

  2226. experience

  2227. because

  2228. Lazarus

  2229. is

  2230. restored

  2231. to

  2232. ordinary

  2233. mortal

  2234. life

  2235. and will

  2236. therefore

  2237. die again

  2238. someday

  2239. a mortal

  2240. life

  2241. he has

  2242. received an

  2243. extraordinary

  2244. restoration

  2245. but he has

  2246. not yet

  2247. received the

  2248. final glorified

  2249. body

  2250. promised

  2251. to the

  2252. people of

  2253. God

  2254. his

  2255. resurrection

  2256. is a

  2257. sign

  2258. pointing

  2259. beyond

  2260. itself

  2261. towards

  2262. something

  2263. greater

  2264. there is

  2265. coming a

  2266. day

  2267. when Jesus

  2268. Christ

  2269. will speak

  2270. again

  2271. and every

  2272. grave

  2273. will yield

  2274. its dead

  2275. on that

  2276. day

  2277. those who

  2278. belong to

  2279. Christ

  2280. will not

  2281. merely return

  2282. to another

  2283. period of

  2284. mortal

  2285. existence

  2286. in which

  2287. death

  2288. waits for

  2289. them

  2290. again

  2291. the

  2292. perishable

  2293. will put

  2294. on the

  2295. imperishable

  2296. the

  2297. mortal

  2298. will put

  2299. on

  2300. immortality

  2301. the

  2302. bodies

  2303. of

  2304. God's

  2305. people

  2306. however

  2307. weak

  2308. diseased

  2309. broken

  2310. aged

  2311. or

  2312. decayed

  2313. they may

  2314. have

  2315. become

  2316. will be

  2317. raised

  2318. in

  2319. glory

  2320. what

  2321. hope

  2322. the

  2323. Christian

  2324. has

  2325. secondly

  2326. Lazarus'

  2327. resurrection

  2328. gives us

  2329. a vivid

  2330. picture of

  2331. the sovereign

  2332. grace of

  2333. God

  2334. in salvation

  2335. now we

  2336. should not

  2337. turn John

  2338. 11 into

  2339. an allegory

  2340. because John

  2341. is recounting

  2342. an actual

  2343. historical

  2344. event in

  2345. which an

  2346. actual dead

  2347. man was

  2348. physically

  2349. raised from

  2350. an actual

  2351. tomb

  2352. nevertheless

  2353. the rest of

  2354. scripture uses

  2355. the language

  2356. of death to

  2357. describe our

  2358. spiritual condition

  2359. apart from

  2360. Christ and

  2361. therefore the

  2362. scene before

  2363. us provides a

  2364. powerful

  2365. illustration of

  2366. what divine

  2367. grace must

  2368. accomplish if

  2369. anyone is to

  2370. be saved

  2371. Paul I read

  2372. earlier says

  2373. in Ephesians 2

  2374. that we were

  2375. dead in

  2376. trespasses

  2377. and sins

  2378. that diagnosis

  2379. is considerably

  2380. more serious

  2381. than the way

  2382. human beings

  2383. naturally think

  2384. about themselves

  2385. we tend to

  2386. imagine that

  2387. our fundamental

  2388. problem is

  2389. lack of

  2390. information

  2391. lack of

  2392. discipline

  2393. bad examples

  2394. unhealthy

  2395. environments

  2396. or poor

  2397. choices

  2398. and while all

  2399. of those

  2400. things may

  2401. play some

  2402. role in

  2403. human

  2404. behavior

  2405. scripture reaches

  2406. beneath them

  2407. to a much

  2408. deeper

  2409. reality

  2410. apart from

  2411. Christ

  2412. we are

  2413. spiritually

  2414. dead

  2415. and dead

  2416. people do

  2417. not need

  2418. advice

  2419. they need

  2420. life

  2421. that is why

  2422. salvation must

  2423. be a work of

  2424. sovereign grace

  2425. from beginning

  2426. to end

  2427. the doctrine

  2428. of regeneration

  2429. is not some

  2430. cold theological

  2431. abstraction best

  2432. left to seminary

  2433. classrooms

  2434. it is tremendously

  2435. hopeful

  2436. it means the

  2437. salvation of

  2438. those you love

  2439. does not

  2440. finally depend

  2441. upon your

  2442. ability to

  2443. persuade them

  2444. you should

  2445. speak

  2446. clearly

  2447. you should

  2448. answer

  2449. objections

  2450. thoughtfully

  2451. you should

  2452. live

  2453. faithfully

  2454. you should

  2455. pray

  2456. persistently

  2457. but in the

  2458. end

  2459. salvation

  2460. belongs

  2461. to God

  2462. look at

  2463. Lazarus's

  2464. tomb

  2465. the deadness

  2466. of Lazarus

  2467. did not

  2468. exceed the

  2469. power of

  2470. Christ

  2471. and the

  2472. spiritual

  2473. deadness

  2474. of the

  2475. sinner

  2476. you love

  2477. does not

  2478. exceed

  2479. his power

  2480. either

  2481. we cannot

  2482. raise the

  2483. dead

  2484. but Christ

  2485. can

  2486. so preach

  2487. the gospel

  2488. pray

  2489. love

  2490. patiently

  2491. speak

  2492. truth

  2493. and do not

  2494. confuse

  2495. the apparent

  2496. hardness

  2497. of the

  2498. sinner

  2499. with

  2500. weakness

  2501. in the

  2502. Savior

  2503. third

  2504. Lazarus's

  2505. resurrection

  2506. points us

  2507. forward to

  2508. the resurrection

  2509. of Jesus

  2510. look carefully

  2511. again

  2512. at verse

  2513. 44

  2514. the man

  2515. who died

  2516. came out

  2517. his hands

  2518. and feet

  2519. bound with

  2520. linen strips

  2521. and his face

  2522. wrapped

  2523. with a

  2524. cloth

  2525. Lazarus

  2526. comes out

  2527. of the

  2528. tomb

  2529. still

  2530. dressed

  2531. for burial

  2532. his body

  2533. is alive

  2534. but the

  2535. signs of

  2536. death

  2537. remain

  2538. wrapped

  2539. around

  2540. him

  2541. and so

  2542. Jesus

  2543. commands

  2544. unbind

  2545. him

  2546. and let

  2547. him

  2548. go

  2549. hold that

  2550. image

  2551. in your

  2552. mind

  2553. because

  2554. John is

  2555. going to

  2556. take us

  2557. eventually

  2558. to another

  2559. tomb

  2560. there will

  2561. be another

  2562. stone

  2563. there will

  2564. be more

  2565. linen

  2566. cloths

  2567. there will

  2568. be another

  2569. face

  2570. cloth

  2571. but when

  2572. Peter and

  2573. John

  2574. enter Jesus

  2575. tomb

  2576. on resurrection

  2577. morning

  2578. they will

  2579. not find

  2580. Jesus

  2581. stumbling

  2582. toward the

  2583. entrance

  2584. still

  2585. wrapped

  2586. in burial

  2587. garments

  2588. needing

  2589. someone

  2590. else

  2591. to untie

  2592. him

  2593. they will

  2594. find

  2595. the

  2596. linen

  2597. cloths

  2598. lying

  2599. there

  2600. and the

  2601. face

  2602. cloth

  2603. folded

  2604. separately

  2605. the

  2606. distinction

  2607. is

  2608. theologically

  2609. significant

  2610. Lazarus

  2611. has been

  2612. restored

  2613. to mortal

  2614. life

  2615. Jesus

  2616. rises

  2617. as the

  2618. victorious

  2619. beginning

  2620. of the

  2621. new

  2622. creation

  2623. Lazarus

  2624. will die

  2625. again

  2626. Jesus

  2627. rises

  2628. never

  2629. to die

  2630. again

  2631. Lazarus

  2632. resurrection

  2633. is a

  2634. sign

  2635. Jesus

  2636. resurrection

  2637. is

  2638. the

  2639. victory

  2640. so

  2641. Jesus

  2642. confronts

  2643. death

  2644. calls

  2645. us

  2646. to see

  2647. his

  2648. glory

  2649. communes

  2650. with

  2651. the

  2652. father

  2653. commands

  2654. the

  2655. dead

  2656. to

  2657. live

  2658. had

  2659. you

  2660. stopped

  2661. the

  2662. story

  2663. at

  2664. almost

  2665. any

  2666. point

  2667. before

  2668. verse

  2669. 43

  2670. and

  2671. attempted

  2672. to

  2673. evaluate

  2674. the

  2675. faithfulness

  2676. of

  2677. Christ

  2678. merely

  2679. by the

  2680. visible

  2681. circumstances

  2682. you

  2683. might

  2684. have

  2685. concluded

  2686. that

  2687. something

  2688. had

  2689. gone

  2690. terribly

  2691. wrong

  2692. but

  2693. nothing

  2694. went

  2695. wrong

  2696. Jesus

  2697. knew

  2698. precisely

  2699. what

  2700. he

  2701. was

  2702. doing

  2703. the

  2704. delay

  2705. had

  2706. a

  2707. purpose

  2708. the

  2709. journey

  2710. had

  2711. a

  2712. purpose

  2713. the

  2714. tears

  2715. had

  2716. a

  2717. purpose

  2718. the

  2719. tomb

  2720. itself

  2721. had

  2722. a

  2723. purpose

  2724. and

  2725. through

  2726. all

  2727. of

  2728. it

  2729. Christ

  2730. was

  2731. moving

  2732. toward

  2733. the

  2734. revelation

  2735. of

  2736. his

  2737. glory

  2738. some

  2739. of

  2740. you

  2741. may

  2742. presently

  2743. be

  2744. living

  2745. somewhere

  2746. in the

  2747. middle

  2748. of a

  2749. story

  2750. whose

  2751. conclusion

  2752. you

  2753. cannot

  2754. see

  2755. you

  2756. know

  2757. that

  2758. Christ

  2759. loves

  2760. you

  2761. but

  2762. you

  2763. cannot

  2764. reconcile

  2765. that

  2766. love

  2767. with

  2768. what

  2769. he

  2770. has

  2771. allowed

  2772. you

  2773. have

  2774. prayed

  2775. and

  2776. the

  2777. answer

  2778. has

  2779. been

  2780. delayed

  2781. you

  2782. believe

  2783. but

  2784. you

  2785. are

  2786. grieving

  2787. you

  2788. trust

  2789. him

  2790. you

  2791. cannot

  2792. imagine

  2793. how

  2794. the

  2795. circumstances

  2796. presently

  2797. in

  2798. front

  2799. of

  2800. you

  2801. could

  2802. possibly

  2803. serve

  2804. any

  2805. good

  2806. purpose

  2807. I

  2808. cannot

  2809. promise

  2810. you

  2811. that

  2812. every

  2813. grave

  2814. you

  2815. stand

  2816. beside

  2817. will

  2818. open

  2819. in

  2820. this

  2821. life

  2822. John 11

  2823. does not

  2824. give us

  2825. space

  2826. for that

  2827. kind

  2828. of

  2829. promise

  2830. Lazarus

  2831. resurrection

  2832. is a

  2833. sign

  2834. not a

  2835. guarantee

  2836. that

  2837. every

  2838. tragedy

  2839. will be

  2840. reversed

  2841. according

  2842. to

  2843. our

  2844. preferred

  2845. timetable

  2846. but

  2847. the

  2848. sign

  2849. points

  2850. to

  2851. something

  2852. far

  2853. greater

  2854. and

  2855. far

  2856. more

  2857. certain

  2858. resurrection

  2859. is

  2860. coming

  2861. if you

  2862. belong to

  2863. Jesus

  2864. Christ

  2865. there is

  2866. no sorrow

  2867. in your

  2868. life

  2869. which can

  2870. overturn

  2871. his purposes

  2872. for you

  2873. no loss

  2874. which can

  2875. separate you

  2876. from his

  2877. love

  2878. no enemy

  2879. capable

  2880. of surviving

  2881. his

  2882. kingdom

  2883. and no

  2884. grave

  2885. capable

  2886. of holding

  2887. you

  2888. when he

  2889. commands

  2890. you

  2891. to

  2892. rise

  2893. there is

  2894. coming a

  2895. day when

  2896. the voice

  2897. heard

  2898. outside

  2899. Lazarus

  2900. tomb

  2901. will

  2902. sound

  2903. again

  2904. only on

  2905. that day

  2906. there will

  2907. be no

  2908. temporary

  2909. restoration

  2910. to a

  2911. mortal

  2912. life

  2913. that

  2914. eventually

  2915. ends

  2916. in

  2917. another

  2918. funeral

  2919. there will

  2920. be

  2921. resurrection

  2922. unto

  2923. everlasting

  2924. life

  2925. Jesus

  2926. is

  2927. the

  2928. resurrection

  2929. and

  2930. the

  2931. life

  2932. believe

  2933. him

  2934. trust

  2935. him

  2936. wait

  2937. for him

  2938. hold

  2939. up

  2940. and

  2941. hold

  2942. on

  2943. and

  2944. expect

  2945. the

  2946. glory

  2947. of our

  2948. God

  2949. let's

  2950. pray

  2951. together
