  1. Amen and good morning. Please take your copy of God's Word and join me in John chapter 11.

    John 11 chapter mention

  2. If you were here with us last week, rest assured, my blood sugar is doing well, and I have nothing but water to drink.

  3. We're going to begin reading in verse 45 and continue through the end of the chapter for our study this morning.

  4. And as we do, we're going to be in a passage that in one sense feels almost like an epilogue to the raising of Lazarus.

  5. Though John intends us to understand that what happens here is actually much more significant than just that.

  6. The raising of Lazarus is finished.

  7. The stone has been removed. Jesus has prayed to his father.

  8. He has cried out with a loud voice, Lazarus, come out.

  9. And the man who had been dead for four days has walked out of his tomb still wrapped in his burial cloths.

  10. As we saw last week, that miracle is not merely an extraordinary display of raw power, but a sign revealing the identity of Jesus Christ.

  11. Jesus had told Martha, I am the resurrection and the life.

  12. Then he demonstrated that his words were not religious sentiment spoken to comfort a grieving woman,

  13. because the one who claimed to be the resurrection stood outside of the grave and commanded the dead to live.

  14. And Lazarus lived.

  15. Now, if we were writing the story, I suspect most of us would expect John to conclude chapter 11 differently.

  16. We might expect something like this.

  17. Lazarus comes out of the tomb.

  18. Everyone falls down in worship.

  19. The religious leaders finally admit that they have been wrong about Jesus all along.

  20. Jerusalem welcomes her Messiah.

  21. And the chapter ends in universal celebration.

  22. We, of course, know this is not how the story goes.

  23. But what more evidence could anyone possibly require that Jesus is the Christ?

  24. Jesus turned water into wine.

  25. He has healed the sick.

  26. He has given sight to a man born blind.

  27. He has fed thousands with a small amount of food.

  28. He has walked upon the sea.

  29. And now, if there were any uncertainty remaining about the kind of authority he possesses,

  30. Jesus called a man out of a grave after four days dead.

  31. Surely, this should settle the question.

  32. Surely, everyone would believe now, but that is not at all what happens.

  33. And what John shows us in the remainder of chapter 11 is something profoundly important about belief.

  34. Excuse me, about unbelief.

  35. The fundamental problem of unbelief is not a lack of evidence.

  36. The problem is that the human heart does not want the conclusion to which the evidence points.

  37. There are people in this passage who have just watched Lazarus walk out of his grave,

  38. and rather than falling before Jesus in worship,

  39. they begin participating in a process that will lead to his murder.

  40. But there's even greater truth running behind the surface of these verses,

  41. because while sinful men begin plotting the death of Jesus for their own wicked purposes,

  42. God is simultaneously accomplishing his own righteous purpose through their plot.

  43. The leaders intend murder.

  44. God intends salvation.

  45. Caiaphas intends political expediency.

  46. God speaks through him of substitutionary atonement.

  47. The council concludes that Jesus must die to preserve their nation,

  48. while God has determined that Jesus will die to save his people,

  49. not only from Israel, but from among the nations of the world.

  50. And so this passage becomes one of the clearest examples in all of Scripture of the mysterious sovereign providence of God,

  51. who is so completely Lord over human history that even the wicked actions of sinful men cannot overthrow his purposes,

  52. but are, without excusing their wickedness in any way,

  53. made to serve the very plan they intend to destroy.

  54. So let's look at this passage together after a word of prayer.

  55. Father, we thank you for your word this morning,

  56. this end of John chapter 11,

    John 11 chapter mention

  57. the opportunity for us to take some time to take it up,

  58. to read it,

  59. to consider all of its implications.

  60. We humbly recognize that we need your help to do this.

  61. We are feeble in our own thinking.

  62. We have varied distractions in all of our minds,

  63. even now.

  64. We need your help to believe its promises and obey its commands,

  65. to have affection for you, its author.

  66. So we pray that you'd help us to do this.

  67. We pray it in Jesus' name.

  68. Amen.

  69. John chapter 11, I'll begin reading in verse 45.

    John 11 chapter mention

  70. Many of the Jews, therefore, who had come with Mary

  71. and had seen what he did, believed in him.

  72. But some of them went to the Pharisees

  73. and told them what Jesus had done.

  74. So the chief priests and the Pharisees

  75. gathered the council and said,

  76. What are we to do?

  77. For this man performs many signs.

  78. If we let him go on like this,

  79. everyone will believe in him.

  80. And the Romans will come and take away

  81. both our place and our nation.

  82. But one of them, Caiaphas,

  83. who was high priest that year,

  84. said to them,

  85. You know nothing at all.

  86. Nor do you understand that it is better for you

  87. that one man should die for the people,

  88. not that the whole nation should perish.

  89. He did not say this of his own accord.

  90. But being a high priest that year,

  91. he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation.

  92. And not for the nation only,

  93. but also to gather into one

  94. the children of God who are scattered abroad.

  95. So from that day on,

  96. they made plans to put him to death.

  97. Jesus, therefore, no longer walked openly among the Jews,

  98. but went from there to the region near the wilderness

  99. to a town called Ephraim.

  100. And there he stayed with the disciples.

  101. Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand,

  102. and many went up from the country to Jerusalem

  103. before the Passover to purify themselves.

  104. They were looking for Jesus

  105. and saying to one another as they stood in the temple,

  106. What do you think?

  107. that he will not come to the feast at all?

  108. Now the chief priests and the Pharisees

  109. had given orders that if anyone knew where he was,

  110. he should let them know

  111. so that they might arrest him.

  112. All right.

  113. I'd like to consider this passage this morning

  114. under four headings.

  115. Number one, the sign produces division.

  116. Number two, the leaders protect their position.

  117. Number three, the priests proclaim more than he knows.

  118. And number four, the Passover points us toward the cross.

  119. Well, number one, the sign produces division.

  120. We see this in verses 45 and 46.

  121. Look first at verse 45.

  122. Many of the Jews, therefore, who had come with Mary

  123. and had seen what he did, believed in him.

  124. That is the response that we want.

  125. That's what we would expect.

  126. These are the people who had come to Bethany

  127. to console Mary and Martha.

  128. And after the death of Lazarus,

  129. and because they were present with the sisters,

  130. have witnessed the events that John just described.

  131. John tells us that many of them responded

  132. exactly as the signs in this gospel

  133. are intended to lead us to respond.

  134. Perhaps these are some of the disciples

  135. in the upper room after Jesus' death.

  136. They believed in him.

  137. Remember again the purpose statement

  138. John will give us near the end of this gospel.

  139. These signs have been written so that you may believe

  140. that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God,

  141. and that by believing, have life in his name.

  142. So the sign, the miracle of the raising of Lazarus

  143. points beyond itself to Christ.

  144. The miracle is not merely saying,

  145. look what Jesus can do.

  146. The miracle is saying, look who Jesus is.

  147. And many saw the sign,

  148. understood something of what it revealed

  149. concerning Jesus.

  150. He is the resurrection and the life.

  151. And they believed in him.

  152. But then verse 46 introduces

  153. one of those contrasts John uses repeatedly

  154. throughout the gospel.

  155. We've seen this theme again and again and again.

  156. Those who receive, those who reject.

  157. Verse 46 says,

  158. But some of them went to the Pharisees

  159. and told them what Jesus had done.

  160. Now John does not explicitly tell us

  161. the motives of these people

  162. and therefore we should be careful

  163. not to pretend that we know

  164. more than the text tells us.

  165. It is possible that some of them

  166. simply reported the event

  167. without understanding what the consequences would be.

  168. But given what immediately follows,

  169. the contrast is really difficult to miss.

  170. Some see Lazarus raised and believe.

  171. Others see Lazarus raised and go to those

  172. who have already demonstrated their hospitality,

  173. excuse me, their hostility toward Jesus.

  174. They've been openly hostile toward him.

  175. Same Christ, same sign, same evidence,

  176. different responses.

  177. And that pattern has appeared

  178. all throughout John's gospel.

  179. Jesus reveals himself

  180. and people divide.

  181. Some believe, others reject,

  182. some worship, others oppose.

  183. Some recognize the shepherd's voice.

  184. Others accuse him of having a demon.

  185. The light shines into the darkness,

  186. but not everyone loves the light.

  187. And this raises an important question for us.

  188. Why does one person see the signs of Christ

  189. and believe while another encounters

  190. the same testimony

  191. and remains hardened?

  192. We are often inclined to assume

  193. that unbelief is primarily

  194. an intellectual problem.

  195. And certainly there are

  196. intellectual questions worth answering.

  197. Christianity does not ask people

  198. to turn off their minds.

  199. The Christian faith

  200. makes historical and theological claims

  201. which should be examined carefully.

  202. But scripture teaches us

  203. that unbelief goes deeper

  204. than just a lack of information.

  205. Jesus has already said in John 3

  206. that light has come into the world,

  207. but people loved darkness

  208. rather than light

  209. because their works were evil.

  210. The issue is not merely

  211. that they cannot see.

  212. The issue is that

  213. they do not want the implications

  214. of what they see.

  215. That is precisely what becomes apparent

  216. in the verses that follow.

  217. The religious leaders

  218. are not going to deny

  219. that Jesus has done

  220. extraordinary things.

  221. In fact,

  222. they will openly acknowledge it.

  223. The problem is not

  224. that the evidence for Jesus

  225. is insufficient.

  226. The problem is that

  227. if Jesus really is

  228. who the evidence indicates he is,

  229. then they can no longer remain

  230. the unquestioned rulers

  231. of their own lives.

  232. And that remains

  233. one of the great obstacles

  234. to faith.

  235. People sometimes say,

  236. if God would just show me

  237. enough evidence,

  238. I would believe.

  239. Perhaps.

  240. But the Bible makes us

  241. ask another question.

  242. If God showed you

  243. enough evidence,

  244. would you worship him

  245. or would you resent the fact

  246. that the evidence requires you

  247. to surrender yourself

  248. to him?

  249. Because Christianity

  250. does not merely ask you

  251. to add Jesus

  252. to an otherwise

  253. unchanged life.

  254. It tells you

  255. that Jesus

  256. is Lord.

  257. If you're to have him

  258. as your Savior,

  259. he will also

  260. be Lord.

  261. If Jesus

  262. is the Christ,

  263. the Son of God,

  264. then he possesses

  265. rightful authority

  266. over you

  267. for your eternal good.

  268. and it is entirely

  269. possible for a person

  270. to resist Christianity

  271. not because the evidence

  272. is weak,

  273. but because the implications

  274. are costly.

  275. Sin does not

  276. merely make us

  277. ignorant.

  278. Sin makes us

  279. rebellious.

  280. And so the question

  281. the text places

  282. before each of us

  283. is not merely

  284. have I seen enough

  285. concerning Christ,

  286. the more searching

  287. question is

  288. what have I done

  289. with what God

  290. has shown me

  291. concerning his Son.

  292. Because exposure

  293. to truth

  294. does not automatically

  295. produce faith.

  296. These people

  297. watched a resurrection.

  298. The account is clear.

  299. It's undoubted.

  300. Lazarus was dead.

  301. They witnessed

  302. a man

  303. come to life

  304. with words.

  305. Some believed.

  306. Sadly,

  307. some did not.

  308. You can sit

  309. under faithful

  310. preaching for years

  311. and remain unchanged.

  312. You can know

  313. Christian doctrine

  314. and get it all

  315. just right.

  316. You can learn

  317. Christian vocabulary.

  318. You can understand

  319. what the Bible

  320. teaches about Christ

  321. and still refuse

  322. to entrust yourself

  323. to him.

  324. The question

  325. is not whether

  326. Christ has been

  327. sufficiently revealed.

  328. The question

  329. is whether

  330. you will

  331. believe.

  332. he is the Christ.

  333. Second heading.

  334. The leaders

  335. protect

  336. their position.

  337. So John

  338. goes on

  339. after this

  340. account

  341. has been reported.

  342. Verse 47.

  343. So the chief

  344. priests

  345. and the Pharisees

  346. gathered the council

  347. and said,

  348. what are we to do?

  349. For this man

  350. performs

  351. many signs.

  352. The council

  353. here is

  354. what's known

  355. as the Sanhedrin.

  356. the ruling

  357. Jewish council

  358. made up of

  359. the principal

  360. religious

  361. authorities

  362. of the nation.

  363. It was a

  364. mix of both

  365. Pharisees

  366. and Sadducees,

  367. predominantly

  368. Sadducees.

  369. And I want you

  370. to notice

  371. the extraordinary

  372. admission they make.

  373. They do not say

  374. this man's signs

  375. fraudulent.

  376. They do not say

  377. Lazarus was never

  378. actually dead.

  379. They do not

  380. attempt to produce

  381. some natural

  382. explanation for

  383. what has occurred.

  384. They just say

  385. this man

  386. performs

  387. many

  388. signs.

  389. I'll pass over

  390. that

  391. too quickly.

  392. These are

  393. Genesis' enemies.

  394. They're the men

  395. who want

  396. to

  397. stop him.

  398. And their

  399. strategy is not

  400. to deny

  401. that he is

  402. doing signs

  403. because apparently

  404. the evidence

  405. has become

  406. too public

  407. and too

  408. overwhelming

  409. for that

  410. to be

  411. plausible.

  412. Their question

  413. is,

  414. not did he

  415. do it,

  416. their question

  417. is,

  418. what are we

  419. going to do

  420. about him?

  421. That's a

  422. remarkable

  423. picture

  424. of unbelief.

  425. I'm not

  426. doubting

  427. that he has

  428. done these

  429. things,

  430. that he is

  431. powerful.

  432. What they're

  433. doing is saying

  434. it's going to

  435. be a problem.

  436. We've got to

  437. get rid of

  438. them.

  439. They have

  440. reached the

  441. point where

  442. the problem

  443. in their

  444. minds is

  445. no longer

  446. the evidence.

  447. The problem

  448. is Jesus

  449. himself.

  450. Verse 48

  451. explains why.

  452. If we let

  453. him go on

  454. like this,

  455. everyone will

  456. believe in

  457. him.

  458. The evidence

  459. will stack

  460. and stack

  461. and stack.

  462. Everyone will

  463. believe and

  464. the Romans

  465. will come

  466. and take

  467. away both

  468. our place

  469. and our

  470. nation.

  471. Do you

  472. hear the

  473. fear

  474. underneath

  475. these

  476. words?

  477. If Jesus

  478. continues,

  479. people will

  480. follow him.

  481. If people

  482. follow him,

  483. Rome may

  484. interpret the

  485. movement as

  486. a political

  487. rebellion.

  488. If Rome

  489. intervenes,

  490. we may

  491. lose our

  492. place and

  493. our nation.

  494. Now,

  495. there is a

  496. measure of

  497. historical

  498. realism in

  499. their concern.

  500. Israel lived

  501. under Roman

  502. occupation,

  503. and Rome

  504. had little

  505. patience for

  506. disturbances that

  507. threatened imperial

  508. order.

  509. They very

  510. wisely allowed

  511. religious practice

  512. to go on,

  513. kind of some

  514. puppet governance

  515. that felt

  516. local.

  517. They didn't

  518. strip people

  519. that they

  520. conquered entirely

  521. of their

  522. identity,

  523. but it could

  524. not threaten

  525. the rule

  526. of Rome.

  527. A large

  528. messianic

  529. movement could

  530. certainly attract

  531. Roman attention,

  532. but John

  533. wants us to

  534. see that their

  535. concern for

  536. national survival

  537. is entangled

  538. with something

  539. far more

  540. personal.

  541. They are

  542. afraid of

  543. losing,

  544. quote,

  545. our place.

  546. That may

  547. include the

  548. temple,

  549. but it almost

  550. certainly

  551. includes their

  552. position,

  553. influence,

  554. privilege,

  555. and authority

  556. within the

  557. existing religious

  558. order.

  559. Caiaphas was

  560. appointed high

  561. priest by a

  562. Roman ruler.

  563. father.

  564. Jesus

  565. threatens what

  566. they possess,

  567. and suddenly

  568. the issue

  569. becomes very

  570. clear.

  571. They do not

  572. ask whether

  573. Jesus is

  574. true.

  575. They ask

  576. what Jesus

  577. might cost

  578. them.

  579. That is one

  580. of the most

  581. dangerous ways

  582. the human

  583. heart can

  584. approach

  585. Christ.

  586. We begin

  587. calculating.

  588. If I believe

  589. him, what

  590. will happen

  591. to the life

  592. I have

  593. constructed?

  594. What

  595. relationships

  596. might change?

  597. What ambitions

  598. might have

  599. to die?

  600. What sins

  601. would I need

  602. to abandon?

  603. What control

  604. would I have

  605. to surrender?

  606. What will

  607. people think

  608. of me?

  609. What might

  610. obedience

  611. cost?

  612. And if the

  613. preservation

  614. of our

  615. present life

  616. becomes our

  617. highest good,

  618. we will

  619. eventually find

  620. reasons to

  621. reject anything

  622. that threatens

  623. it, even

  624. Christ

  625. himself.

  626. Jesus said

  627. earlier in the

  628. gospel that

  629. whoever loves

  630. his life

  631. loses it.

  632. The religious

  633. leaders are

  634. demonstrating

  635. exactly what

  636. he means.

  637. Their

  638. overriding

  639. concern is

  640. preservation.

  641. And therefore,

  642. Jesus must be

  643. dealt with.

  644. There is an

  645. irony here that

  646. John's original

  647. readers could

  648. hardly miss.

  649. They fear that

  650. if they do not

  651. kill Jesus, the

  652. Romans would

  653. come and destroy

  654. their place and

  655. nation.

  656. So they arranged

  657. for Jesus to

  658. be killed.

  659. And approximately

  660. 40 years later,

  661. in AD 70, Rome

  662. comes and

  663. destroys Jerusalem

  664. and the temple

  665. anyway.

  666. The very thing

  667. they attempt to

  668. prevent by

  669. rejecting Christ

  670. eventually overtakes

  671. them.

  672. Now, we should

  673. be careful about

  674. drawing overly

  675. simplistic lines

  676. between every

  677. historical judgment

  678. and specific

  679. acts of sin,

  680. but John

  681. certainly wants

  682. us to recognize

  683. the tragic

  684. blindness of

  685. their reasoning.

  686. They believe

  687. they can save

  688. themselves by

  689. eliminating

  690. Jesus, but

  691. no one saves

  692. himself by

  693. rejecting the

  694. Savior.

  695. And that applies

  696. far beyond

  697. first century

  698. Judaism.

  699. Sin always

  700. makes promises

  701. about

  702. preservation.

  703. If I obey

  704. Christ here, I

  705. will lose too

  706. much.

  707. If I tell the

  708. truth, I will

  709. lose this

  710. opportunity.

  711. If I confess

  712. this sin, I'll

  713. lose my reputation.

  714. If I obey

  715. Scripture, I may

  716. lose this

  717. relationship.

  718. If I follow

  719. Jesus faithfully, I

  720. may lose the

  721. approval of

  722. people whose

  723. approval I

  724. value.

  725. And the lie

  726. underneath all

  727. of it is that

  728. disobedience will

  729. preserve what

  730. obedience

  731. threatens.

  732. Sometimes,

  733. beloved,

  734. obedience does

  735. cost us.

  736. Jesus has

  737. never promised

  738. otherwise.

  739. there are

  740. things Christians

  741. lose because

  742. they follow

  743. Christ.

  744. But whatever

  745. obedience costs,

  746. disobedience

  747. ultimately costs

  748. more.

  749. The safest

  750. place in

  751. all of

  752. creation is

  753. not the

  754. place where

  755. you have

  756. successfully

  757. protected

  758. yourself from

  759. every earthly

  760. loss.

  761. The safest

  762. place is

  763. obedience to

  764. the Lord

  765. Jesus Christ.

  766. Christ.

  767. These leaders

  768. are trying to

  769. control the

  770. future without

  771. submitting

  772. themselves to

  773. the Lord

  774. of that

  775. future.

  776. And whenever

  777. we do that,

  778. fear rules

  779. us.

  780. That is worth

  781. considering,

  782. particularly for

  783. us as a

  784. church.

  785. Churches, I

  786. think, can

  787. begin thinking

  788. exactly like

  789. the Sanhedrin.

  790. God

  791. how do we

  792. preserve our

  793. place, our

  794. influence, our

  795. institution?

  796. How do we

  797. keep people?

  798. How do we

  799. protect the

  800. organization?

  801. It begins to

  802. exist just to

  803. exist.

  804. Those questions

  805. are not always

  806. in every form

  807. illegitimate.

  808. Stewardship does

  809. in fact matter.

  810. But the

  811. moment institutional

  812. survival becomes

  813. more important than

  814. faithfulness to

  815. Christ, the

  816. church has

  817. begun to

  818. protect the

  819. wrong thing.

  820. Christ did

  821. not promise

  822. that every

  823. local church

  824. would exist

  825. forever.

  826. He promised

  827. that His

  828. church would.

  829. Our

  830. responsibility is

  831. not to preserve

  832. ourselves at any

  833. cost.

  834. Our

  835. responsibility

  836. is to be

  837. faithful.

  838. If Providence

  839. Baptist Church

  840. exists, the

  841. Lord tarries for

  842. another hundred

  843. years, but

  844. abandons the

  845. truth, we have

  846. failed miserably.

  847. And if

  848. faithfulness to

  849. Christ ever

  850. costs us

  851. influence,

  852. reputation,

  853. attendance,

  854. money, comfort,

  855. or cultural

  856. approval, then

  857. let those things

  858. go before we

  859. let the truth

  860. go.

  861. The church

  862. belongs to

  863. Christ.

  864. He will

  865. build it.

  866. Our task is

  867. to be faithful.

  868. Third

  869. heading.

  870. The priest

  871. proclaims more

  872. than he knows.

  873. See this in

  874. verses 49

  875. down through

  876. 53.

  877. Beginning in

  878. verses 49, we

  879. come to one of

  880. the most

  881. astonishing

  882. examples of

  883. divine providence

  884. anywhere in

  885. John's

  886. gospel.

  887. There he

  888. says, but

  889. one of them,

  890. Caiaphas, who

  891. was the high

  892. priest that

  893. year, said

  894. to them,

  895. you know

  896. nothing at

  897. all, nor

  898. do you

  899. understand that

  900. it is better

  901. for you that

  902. one man should

  903. die for the

  904. people, not

  905. that the

  906. whole nation

  907. should perish.

  908. Caiaphas has

  909. apparently had

  910. enough of the

  911. discussion.

  912. You can hear

  913. the arrogance

  914. in these words,

  915. you know

  916. nothing at

  917. all.

  918. You know

  919. nothing.

  920. You understand

  921. nothing.

  922. This is not

  923. kindness that

  924. he's starting

  925. with here.

  926. in essence,

  927. Caiaphas

  928. believes the

  929. answer is

  930. obvious.

  931. Stop

  932. talking.

  933. There's a

  934. simple political

  935. solution.

  936. Jesus is

  937. one man.

  938. The nation

  939. is many

  940. people.

  941. If one

  942. man threatens

  943. the security

  944. of the

  945. nation, then

  946. eliminate the

  947. one man.

  948. From

  949. Caiaphas'

  950. perspective,

  951. that is

  952. straightforward

  953. utilitarian

  954. reasoning.

  955. one life

  956. is expendable

  957. if sacrificing

  958. that life

  959. preserves the

  960. larger group.

  961. And notice

  962. that there is

  963. no concern

  964. here for

  965. justice.

  966. He simply

  967. calculates

  968. outcomes.

  969. Jesus has

  970. become inconvenient.

  971. Jesus is

  972. dangerous to

  973. their political

  974. arrangement.

  975. Therefore,

  976. Jesus must

  977. die.

  978. This is what

  979. happens when

  980. political expediency

  981. becomes detached

  982. from righteousness.

  983. Once survival,

  984. power,

  985. security,

  986. or social

  987. stability

  988. becomes the

  989. highest good,

  990. human beings

  991. become remarkably

  992. capable of

  993. justifying evil

  994. in the name

  995. of something

  996. supposedly

  997. greater.

  998. Political

  999. expediency

  1000. disregards

  1001. decorum

  1002. and principle.

  1003. Things can go

  1004. terribly awry,

  1005. and I'll now

  1006. digress.

  1007. Caiaphas

  1008. believes himself

  1009. to be the

  1010. clearest

  1011. thinker

  1012. in the room.

  1013. And from

  1014. one perspective,

  1015. his statement

  1016. is utterly

  1017. wicked.

  1018. He is

  1019. advocating for

  1020. the murder

  1021. of an innocent

  1022. man.

  1023. But then

  1024. John does

  1025. something

  1026. astonishing.

  1027. He tells us

  1028. that Caiaphas

  1029. has said

  1030. something far

  1031. more profound

  1032. than Caiaphas

  1033. himself

  1034. understands.

  1035. He gives us

  1036. commentary in

  1037. verse 51.

  1038. He did

  1039. not say

  1040. this of

  1041. his own

  1042. accord,

  1043. but being

  1044. high priest

  1045. that year,

  1046. he prophesied

  1047. that Jesus

  1048. would die

  1049. for the

  1050. nation.

  1051. Caiaphas

  1052. speaks.

  1053. Caiaphas

  1054. means one

  1055. thing.

  1056. God

  1057. means something

  1058. much greater

  1059. through his

  1060. words.

  1061. That does

  1062. not mean that

  1063. Caiaphas was

  1064. secretly

  1065. faithful.

  1066. It does

  1067. not mean

  1068. God approves

  1069. his murderous

  1070. intention.

  1071. It means

  1072. that God

  1073. is so

  1074. completely

  1075. sovereign

  1076. that he

  1077. can take

  1078. even the

  1079. words of

  1080. a wicked

  1081. man who

  1082. is conspiring

  1083. against his

  1084. son and

  1085. make those

  1086. words bear

  1087. testimony to

  1088. the very

  1089. salvation

  1090. that man's

  1091. conspiracy

  1092. will accomplish.

  1093. That's

  1094. astounding.

  1095. Caiaphas

  1096. says it is

  1097. better for you

  1098. that one

  1099. man should

  1100. die for

  1101. the people.

  1102. And heaven

  1103. says in

  1104. effect,

  1105. Caiaphas

  1106. you have

  1107. no idea

  1108. how right

  1109. you are.

  1110. One

  1111. man will

  1112. die for

  1113. the people.

  1114. But not

  1115. because he

  1116. is expendable,

  1117. not because

  1118. Rome must

  1119. be appeased,

  1120. not because

  1121. your political

  1122. position needs

  1123. to be

  1124. preserved,

  1125. he will

  1126. die as

  1127. a substitute

  1128. for sinners.

  1129. The heart

  1130. of the

  1131. gospel.

  1132. Jesus

  1133. would die

  1134. for the

  1135. nation.

  1136. That little

  1137. word carries

  1138. enormous

  1139. theological

  1140. weight

  1141. for.

  1142. He dies

  1143. for his

  1144. people,

  1145. in their

  1146. place,

  1147. for their

  1148. benefit,

  1149. as their

  1150. substitute.

  1151. The doctrine

  1152. we're dealing

  1153. with here,

  1154. Caiaphas'

  1155. wicked words,

  1156. is what we

  1157. call penal

  1158. substitutionary

  1159. atonement.

  1160. The heart

  1161. of the

  1162. gospel.

  1163. Penal

  1164. means that

  1165. there's

  1166. sin that

  1167. deserves

  1168. judgment,

  1169. penalty for

  1170. sin.

  1171. Substitutionary

  1172. means that

  1173. Christ stands

  1174. in that

  1175. place.

  1176. He takes

  1177. on that

  1178. punishment

  1179. for his

  1180. people.

  1181. The word

  1182. atonement

  1183. means that

  1184. through his

  1185. sacrifice,

  1186. our guilt

  1187. is dealt

  1188. with,

  1189. it's atoned

  1190. for,

  1191. and reconciliation

  1192. with God

  1193. is accomplished,

  1194. restored back

  1195. to God

  1196. in Christ.

  1197. Jesus dies

  1198. the death

  1199. sinners deserve,

  1200. so that sinners

  1201. who are united

  1202. to him by faith

  1203. receive the life

  1204. and righteousness

  1205. that they

  1206. do not

  1207. deserve.

  1208. It's

  1209. Christianity.

  1210. At the

  1211. cross,

  1212. God does

  1213. not simply

  1214. overlook

  1215. sin.

  1216. If God

  1217. merely ignored

  1218. evil,

  1219. he would

  1220. not be

  1221. righteous.

  1222. The judge

  1223. of all

  1224. the earth

  1225. must do

  1226. what is

  1227. just.

  1228. And

  1229. therefore,

  1230. the wonder

  1231. of the

  1232. gospel is

  1233. not that

  1234. God stops

  1235. being just

  1236. in order

  1237. to become

  1238. merciful.

  1239. The wonder

  1240. of the

  1241. gospel is

  1242. that at

  1243. the cross,

  1244. justice

  1245. and mercy

  1246. meet.

  1247. Our sin

  1248. is truly

  1249. judged.

  1250. Our Savior

  1251. truly bears

  1252. that judgment.

  1253. Isaiah

  1254. had said

  1255. centuries

  1256. earlier,

  1257. he was

  1258. pierced

  1259. for our

  1260. transgression.

  1261. He was

  1262. crushed

  1263. for our

  1264. iniquities.

  1265. And the

  1266. Lord has

  1267. laid on

  1268. him the

  1269. iniquity

  1270. of us

  1271. all.

  1272. Peter

  1273. will later

  1274. say,

  1275. he himself

  1276. bore

  1277. our sins

  1278. in his

  1279. body

  1280. on the

  1281. tree.

  1282. Paul

  1283. says,

  1284. for our

  1285. sake,

  1286. he made

  1287. him to

  1288. be sin

  1289. who knew

  1290. no

  1291. sin.

  1292. The

  1293. consistent

  1294. testimony

  1295. of

  1296. scripture

  1297. is that

  1298. Jesus

  1299. Christ

  1300. died

  1301. not

  1302. simply

  1303. to die,

  1304. he died

  1305. for

  1306. sinners.

  1307. He stood

  1308. where his

  1309. people

  1310. deserved

  1311. to stand.

  1312. He bore

  1313. what his

  1314. people

  1315. deserved

  1316. to bear.

  1317. He

  1318. satisfied

  1319. the

  1320. righteous

  1321. judgment

  1322. of God.

  1323. And

  1324. because he

  1325. did,

  1326. there is

  1327. now no

  1328. condemnation

  1329. for those

  1330. who are

  1331. in

  1332. Christ

  1333. Jesus.

  1334. Caiaphas

  1335. thought he

  1336. was proposing

  1337. a political

  1338. execution.

  1339. God

  1340. was preparing

  1341. a sacrifice.

  1342. And then

  1343. John takes

  1344. the purpose

  1345. of Christ's

  1346. death even

  1347. farther in

  1348. verse 52.

  1349. And not

  1350. for the

  1351. nation

  1352. only,

  1353. Israel,

  1354. but also

  1355. to gather

  1356. into one

  1357. the children

  1358. of God

  1359. who were

  1360. scattered

  1361. abroad.

  1362. God

  1363. there's

  1364. John

  1365. 10.

  1366. Again,

  1367. do you

  1368. remember

  1369. what Jesus

  1370. said about

  1371. himself as

  1372. the good

  1373. shepherd?

  1374. I have

  1375. other sheep

  1376. that are not

  1377. of his fold.

  1378. I must

  1379. bring them

  1380. also and

  1381. they will

  1382. listen to

  1383. my

  1384. voice.

  1385. So there

  1386. will be

  1387. one

  1388. flock,

  1389. one

  1390. shepherd.

  1391. Now,

  1392. John tells

  1393. us that

  1394. the death

  1395. of Jesus

  1396. is the

  1397. means by

  1398. which those

  1399. scattered

  1400. people will

  1401. be gathered

  1402. into one.

  1403. Jesus is

  1404. not merely

  1405. dying for

  1406. ethnic

  1407. Israel.

  1408. The saving

  1409. purpose of

  1410. God extends

  1411. to the

  1412. nations.

  1413. Men and

  1414. women from

  1415. every tribe

  1416. and tongue

  1417. and people

  1418. will be

  1419. gathered to

  1420. Christ.

  1421. The cross

  1422. creates

  1423. a people.

  1424. Jesus

  1425. creates

  1426. a church,

  1427. one flock,

  1428. one shepherd.

  1429. The cross

  1430. reconciles

  1431. sinners to

  1432. God and

  1433. because it

  1434. reconciles

  1435. sinners to

  1436. God,

  1437. it also

  1438. reconciles

  1439. those

  1440. sinners

  1441. to one

  1442. another.

  1443. That means

  1444. the local

  1445. church is

  1446. not merely

  1447. a convenient

  1448. gathering

  1449. place for

  1450. Christians

  1451. who happen

  1452. to enjoy

  1453. the same

  1454. style of

  1455. preaching

  1456. or music.

  1457. It is a

  1458. visible

  1459. expression

  1460. of what

  1461. Christ

  1462. purchased

  1463. by his

  1464. blood.

  1465. Do you

  1466. come here

  1467. thinking

  1468. about that?

  1469. This is

  1470. why divisions

  1471. in the

  1472. church are

  1473. so serious.

  1474. We belong

  1475. to one

  1476. another

  1477. because first

  1478. we belong

  1479. to him.

  1480. It's a

  1481. divine

  1482. reality

  1483. that we

  1484. are united.

  1485. God

  1486. and

  1487. notice

  1488. again

  1489. the

  1490. providence

  1491. of God

  1492. in all

  1493. of this.

  1494. Caiaphas

  1495. intends

  1496. evil.

  1497. God

  1498. accomplishes

  1499. good.

  1500. That pattern

  1501. should remind

  1502. us of

  1503. Joseph

  1504. in

  1505. Genesis

  1506. who

  1507. says

  1508. to his

  1509. brothers,

  1510. you meant

  1511. evil against

  1512. me,

  1513. but God

  1514. meant it

  1515. for good.

  1516. Not merely

  1517. God

  1518. responded

  1519. to your

  1520. evil and

  1521. found a

  1522. way to

  1523. make

  1524. something

  1525. useful

  1526. out of

  1527. it.

  1528. The text

  1529. says you

  1530. meant it

  1531. for evil,

  1532. God

  1533. meant it

  1534. for

  1535. good.

  1536. God

  1537. has a

  1538. plan

  1539. and

  1540. God's

  1541. plan

  1542. will

  1543. prevail.

  1544. So

  1545. John

  1546. records

  1547. in

  1548. verse

  1549. 53,

  1550. so

  1551. from

  1552. that

  1553. day

  1554. on

  1555. they

  1556. made

  1557. plans

  1558. to put

  1559. him

  1560. to

  1561. death.

  1562. It's not

  1563. the first

  1564. time we've

  1565. seen

  1566. Jesus'

  1567. life

  1568. threatened.

  1569. There

  1570. were

  1571. instances

  1572. where

  1573. Jewish

  1574. leaders

  1575. rose

  1576. up

  1577. against

  1578. him,

  1579. but

  1580. this

  1581. is

  1582. kind

  1583. of

  1584. formalizing

  1585. and

  1586. finalizing

  1587. a plan

  1588. is in

  1589. place

  1590. now.

  1591. This

  1592. will

  1593. in

  1594. fact

  1595. take

  1596. place.

  1597. God

  1598. has

  1599. a

  1600. plan.

  1601. It's

  1602. going

  1603. to

  1604. prevail.

  1605. Fourth

  1606. and

  1607. last

  1608. heading.

  1609. The

  1610. Passover

  1611. points

  1612. us

  1613. toward

  1614. the

  1615. cross.

  1616. This

  1617. is

  1618. 54

  1619. to

  1620. the

  1621. end

  1622. of

  1623. the

  1624. text.

  1625. Jesus

  1626. therefore

  1627. verse

  1628. 54

  1629. no

  1630. longer

  1631. walked

  1632. openly

  1633. among

  1634. the

  1635. Jews

  1636. but

  1637. went

  1638. from

  1639. there

  1640. to

  1641. the

  1642. region

  1643. near

  1644. the

  1645. wilderness

  1646. to

  1647. a

  1648. town

  1649. called

  1650. Ephraim

  1651. and

  1652. there

  1653. stayed

  1654. with

  1655. his

  1656. disciples.

  1657. This

  1658. is

  1659. about

  1660. 20

  1661. miles

  1662. northeast

  1663. of

  1664. Jerusalem.

  1665. Now

  1666. someone

  1667. might

  1668. read

  1669. that

  1670. and

  1671. think

  1672. that

  1673. Jesus

  1674. is

  1675. frightened

  1676. that

  1677. once

  1678. the

  1679. plot

  1680. becomes

  1681. sufficiently

  1682. serious

  1683. he

  1684. retreats

  1685. because

  1686. he

  1687. is

  1688. afraid

  1689. to

  1690. die.

  1691. But

  1692. everything

  1693. John

  1694. has

  1695. told

  1696. us

  1697. makes

  1698. that

  1699. interpretation

  1700. impossible.

  1701. Jesus

  1702. has

  1703. repeatedly

  1704. walked

  1705. away

  1706. from

  1707. danger

  1708. not

  1709. because

  1710. he's

  1711. unwilling

  1712. to

  1713. die

  1714. but

  1715. because

  1716. he

  1717. will

  1718. die

  1719. only

  1720. at

  1721. the

  1722. time

  1723. appointed

  1724. by

  1725. his

  1726. father.

  1727. Jesus

  1728. functions

  1729. on a

  1730. divine

  1731. timeline.

  1732. He

  1733. is not

  1734. controlled

  1735. by the

  1736. Sanhedrin's

  1737. timetable.

  1738. They cannot

  1739. kill him

  1740. one moment

  1741. before the

  1742. appointed

  1743. hour.

  1744. And when

  1745. that hour

  1746. comes

  1747. they will

  1748. not need

  1749. to drag

  1750. him

  1751. unwillingly

  1752. toward it.

  1753. He will

  1754. go.

  1755. His enemies

  1756. are making

  1757. plans but

  1758. they do

  1759. not possess

  1760. ultimate

  1761. authority

  1762. over the

  1763. schedule.

  1764. Jesus

  1765. withdraws

  1766. because

  1767. the

  1768. hour

  1769. is

  1770. approaching

  1771. but

  1772. it

  1773. has

  1774. not

  1775. yet

  1776. arrived.

  1777. And then

  1778. John

  1779. says in

  1780. verse 55

  1781. now the

  1782. Passover

  1783. of the

  1784. Jews

  1785. was at

  1786. hand.

  1787. That's

  1788. significant

  1789. not merely

  1790. a

  1791. calendar

  1792. note.

  1793. John

  1794. wants us

  1795. thinking

  1796. about

  1797. Passover.

  1798. The

  1799. Passover

  1800. feast

  1801. commemorated

  1802. God's

  1803. deliverance

  1804. of Israel

  1805. from

  1806. slavery

  1807. in

  1808. Egypt

  1809. when

  1810. judgment

  1811. fell

  1812. upon

  1813. the

  1814. land

  1815. but

  1816. passed

  1817. over

  1818. those

  1819. homes

  1820. marked

  1821. by the

  1822. blood

  1823. of a

  1824. lamb.

  1825. A

  1826. lamb

  1827. dies

  1828. blood

  1829. was

  1830. shed

  1831. judgment

  1832. passed

  1833. over

  1834. God's

  1835. people.

  1836. And now

  1837. as Jerusalem

  1838. filled with

  1839. pilgrims

  1840. preparing to

  1841. celebrate

  1842. Passover

  1843. the true

  1844. Passover

  1845. lamb

  1846. is preparing

  1847. to enter

  1848. the city.

  1849. John

  1850. the Baptist

  1851. identified him

  1852. at the

  1853. beginning

  1854. of this

  1855. gospel

  1856. behold

  1857. the

  1858. lamb

  1859. of God

  1860. who

  1861. takes

  1862. away

  1863. the

  1864. sin

  1865. of

  1866. the

  1867. world.

  1868. The

  1869. religious

  1870. authorities

  1871. think they

  1872. are arranging

  1873. a political

  1874. execution

  1875. God

  1876. is preparing

  1877. the

  1878. sacrifice

  1879. to which

  1880. every

  1881. Passover

  1882. lamb

  1883. ultimately

  1884. pointed.

  1885. The timing

  1886. here is

  1887. not

  1888. accidental.

  1889. Jesus

  1890. will die

  1891. at Passover

  1892. because he

  1893. is the

  1894. greater

  1895. Passover

  1896. !

  1897. lamb.

  1898. The

  1899. blood of

  1900. animals

  1901. can never

  1902. finally

  1903. remove

  1904. human

  1905. guilt.

  1906. These

  1907. sacrifices

  1908. pointed

  1909. beyond

  1910. themselves.

  1911. A

  1912. greater

  1913. lamb

  1914. was

  1915. needed,

  1916. a

  1917. sinless

  1918. substitute.

  1919. one

  1920. whose

  1921. sacrifice

  1922. would

  1923. not

  1924. need

  1925. to

  1926. be

  1927. repeated

  1928. year

  1929. after

  1930. year

  1931. because

  1932. he

  1933. would

  1934. offer

  1935. himself

  1936. once

  1937. for

  1938. all.

  1939. Verse 55

  1940. continues,

  1941. and many

  1942. went up

  1943. from the

  1944. country

  1945. to Jerusalem

  1946. before the

  1947. Passover

  1948. to purify

  1949. themselves.

  1950. There's some

  1951. profound irony

  1952. in that

  1953. description.

  1954. The crowds

  1955. are preparing

  1956. ceremonially

  1957. for Passover.

  1958. they're

  1959. concerned

  1960. with

  1961. purification.

  1962. In the

  1963. middle

  1964. of all

  1965. that

  1966. religious

  1967. activity,

  1968. the

  1969. one

  1970. who

  1971. alone

  1972. can

  1973. truly

  1974. cleanse

  1975. sinners

  1976. is being

  1977. hunted

  1978. by the

  1979. religious

  1980. leaders.

  1981. It is

  1982. possible

  1983. to become

  1984. so

  1985. occupied

  1986. with

  1987. religious

  1988. observance

  1989. that you

  1990. miss

  1991. Christ.

  1992. These

  1993. people are

  1994. preparing

  1995. for a

  1996. feast

  1997. that points

  1998. toward

  1999. Jesus

  2000. while the

  2001. authorities

  2002. are plotting

  2003. to kill

  2004. Jesus.

  2005. We should

  2006. hear a

  2007. warning

  2008. like that.

  2009. religious

  2010. activity

  2011. and

  2012. saving

  2013. faith.

  2014. Not

  2015. the

  2016. same

  2017. thing.

  2018. You

  2019. can do

  2020. all of

  2021. the

  2022. things,

  2023. all of

  2024. the

  2025. trappings,

  2026. all the

  2027. things you

  2028. should do

  2029. as a

  2030. Christ

  2031. follower,

  2032. but

  2033. still

  2034. miss

  2035. Christ.

  2036. The

  2037. Pharisees

  2038. and the

  2039. Sadducees

  2040. are not

  2041. secularists.

  2042. Caiaphas

  2043. is the

  2044. high priest.

  2045. These

  2046. are

  2047. deeply

  2048. religious

  2049. men.

  2050. Their

  2051. problem

  2052. is not

  2053. that they

  2054. take

  2055. God

  2056. too

  2057. seriously.

  2058. The

  2059. problem

  2060. is that

  2061. they have

  2062. constructed

  2063. a religious

  2064. system in

  2065. which they

  2066. themselves

  2067. remain at

  2068. the center.

  2069. And when

  2070. God the

  2071. Son stands

  2072. before them

  2073. threatening

  2074. their

  2075. authority,

  2076. they choose

  2077. their religion

  2078. over the

  2079. Christ.

  2080. That's always

  2081. a danger.

  2082. Beloved,

  2083. we can love

  2084. reformed theology

  2085. without loving

  2086. Christ.

  2087. We can love

  2088. Baptist

  2089. distinctives

  2090. without loving

  2091. Christ.

  2092. Christ.

  2093. We can

  2094. love

  2095. expositional

  2096. preaching

  2097. and good

  2098. true

  2099. deep

  2100. songs

  2101. without

  2102. loving

  2103. Christ.

  2104. We can

  2105. love the

  2106. routines

  2107. and

  2108. relationships,

  2109. culture,

  2110. familiarity

  2111. of church

  2112. while remaining

  2113. strangers

  2114. to Christ.

  2115. Every

  2116. good theological

  2117. conviction

  2118. must lead

  2119. us finally

  2120. to

  2121. him.

  2122. The purpose

  2123. of doctrine

  2124. is not

  2125. that we

  2126. become

  2127. impressed

  2128. with our

  2129. theological

  2130. precision.

  2131. The purpose

  2132. of doctrine

  2133. is that we

  2134. know God

  2135. truly,

  2136. worshiping

  2137. him rightly

  2138. and live

  2139. faithfully

  2140. before him.

  2141. Verse 56

  2142. says,

  2143. they were

  2144. looking for

  2145. Jesus and

  2146. saying to

  2147. one another

  2148. as they

  2149. stood in

  2150. the temple,

  2151. what do

  2152. you think,

  2153. that he

  2154. will not

  2155. come to

  2156. the feast

  2157. at all?

  2158. The city

  2159. is waiting.

  2160. The tension

  2161. in the text

  2162. is building.

  2163. Everyone

  2164. knows the

  2165. authorities

  2166. are hostile.

  2167. Everyone

  2168. wonders

  2169. whether

  2170. Jesus

  2171. will

  2172. come.

  2173. And

  2174. John,

  2175. riding with

  2176. the benefit

  2177. of everything

  2178. that follows,

  2179. knows the

  2180. answer.

  2181. We know

  2182. the answer.

  2183. Yes,

  2184. Jesus

  2185. will

  2186. come

  2187. because

  2188. the good

  2189. shepherd

  2190. lays down

  2191. his life

  2192. for the

  2193. sheep.

  2194. This is

  2195. not an

  2196. unfortunate

  2197. turn of

  2198. events that

  2199. Jesus

  2200. fails to

  2201. avoid.

  2202. It's

  2203. his very

  2204. mission.

  2205. And

  2206. verse 57

  2207. closes the

  2208. chapter.

  2209. Now,

  2210. the chief

  2211. priests

  2212. and the

  2213. Pharisees

  2214. had given

  2215. orders that

  2216. if anyone

  2217. knew where

  2218. he was,

  2219. he should

  2220. let them

  2221. know so

  2222. they might

  2223. arrest him.

  2224. And so

  2225. chapter 11

  2226. ends with

  2227. Jesus,

  2228. the resurrection

  2229. and the

  2230. life under

  2231. a death

  2232. sentence,

  2233. a broadcasted

  2234. death

  2235. sentence.

  2236. Don't

  2237. miss,

  2238. don't miss

  2239. the irony

  2240. there.

  2241. Jesus

  2242. has just

  2243. given

  2244. life to

  2245. a dead

  2246. man.

  2247. And because

  2248. he gives

  2249. life to

  2250. the dead

  2251. man,

  2252. men decide

  2253. to kill

  2254. him.

  2255. Lazarus

  2256. comes out

  2257. of his

  2258. tomb and

  2259. Jesus

  2260. moves

  2261. toward

  2262. his.

  2263. The

  2264. life of

  2265. Lazarus

  2266. will

  2267. contribute

  2268. to the

  2269. death

  2270. of Christ.

  2271. But the

  2272. death of

  2273. Christ will

  2274. accomplish

  2275. everlasting

  2276. life for

  2277. Lazarus and

  2278. for everyone

  2279. who believes

  2280. in him.

  2281. Let's pray

  2282. together.
