  1. We're just going to hand over to her brother and I and he will

  2. finish the service. Well could I thank the brother

  3. for his help tonight, and a burdened shaft, shared as a

  4. burdened haft. And we do thank him for that.

  5. The Bible says two are better than one, for they have a good

  6. reward for their labour. So I do appreciate his work and

  7. his labour of love and the warm words of welcome.

  8. It's good to be with you if. If I remember correctly it was

  9. October time of last year. I was here with you giving a

  10. word of testimony. How quickly those months have

  11. come and gone and it's a joy to be with you here tonight.

  12. Your own minister I think was severely pressed regarding the

  13. preacher for the night. He was having difficulty finding

  14. a preacher and the phone rang 1 morning and I answered it and he

  15. said Brother Tammy, I think he was asking an unbelief.

  16. Are are you free? What's today's date?

  17. This is the July the 9th and I said yes, I am free and would be

  18. happy to preach for you if the Lord enables me to do so.

  19. I think he was getting a little bit desperate, but I was glad I

  20. was able to help him out to some degree of measure as far as the

  21. meeting tonight. Is concerned.

  22. Well, if you have your Bibles there, I'm sure you do, I'd like

  23. you to turn with me to Matthew's Gospel.

  24. Matthew chapter 16, June the 22nd.

    Matthew 16 chapter mention

  25. So it was very close to four years ago.

  26. I suffered that stroke. It took me the best part of

  27. three years, the Lord helping me to get to the place where I

  28. could preach again, where I could live again, where I could

  29. laugh again and God has sustained me.

  30. And given me help from day-to-day.

  31. And I'm glad for those experiences.

  32. It's a privilege from time to time to minister the word of God

  33. in the night certainly is no exception.

  34. So we're going to turn to Matthew chapter 16, and perhaps

    Matthew 16 chapter mention

  35. it could be now reading at the verse #21 First 21.

  36. Matthew chapter 16. From that time forth began

    Matthew 16 chapter mention

  37. Jesus. It shows his disciples now from

  38. that time. His that time of beginning it

  39. would seem there was a change in the focus of Christ ministry.

  40. He was nearing the time of His crucifixion, and so there was a

  41. renewed emphasis upon that great work.

  42. From that time forth began Jesus to show unto his disciples how

  43. that he must go onto Jerusalem and suffer many things of the

  44. elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be

  45. raised again the third day. Then Peter took him and began to

  46. rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee.

  47. In other words, pity thyself. That's the marginal rendering

  48. there. Pity thyself.

  49. Lord, don't be hard on yourself. Don't worry about the cross.

  50. So this is Peter's thought. Be it far from thee, Lord, this

  51. shall not be unto thee. You're above this.

  52. But he turned and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me.

  53. And in the case of the best of Christians, the devil sometimes

  54. get into our mouth. And causes us to be his

  55. mouthpiece. But he turned and said unto

  56. Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan.

  57. Thou art an offence unto me, for thou savourest not the things

  58. that be of God, but those things that be of men.

  59. Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come

  60. after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and

  61. follow me. For whosoever will save his life

  62. shall lose it, and whosoever will lose his life for my sake

  63. shall find it. For what is a man profited, if

  64. he should gain the whole world and lose his own soul?

  65. Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

  66. For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his

  67. angels, and then he shall reward every man according to his

  68. works. Verily I say unto you.

  69. There be some standing here which are not taste of death

  70. till they see the Son of Man coming in his Kingdom.

  71. We'll end the reading there, looking to the Lord to bless his

  72. own word to our hearts and add to this wording the essential

  73. blessing that he alone can bring to the word of the Lord.

  74. But let's just pause briefly now for a word of prayer.

  75. Our gracious God, our loving Father, We thank you for the

  76. privilege. Of being in thy house this

  77. evening, and we thank you for the precious promise.

  78. Where two or three have gathered together in thy name, there art

  79. thou in the midst of them. And a gracious Father we thank

  80. that we can lean upon this exceeding great and precious

  81. promise of God. God is always good to His word,

  82. and whereas people gather in His name, there he is in the midst.

  83. And we therefore thank thee for thy presence.

  84. With us, and thine arms around us throat, we pray for continued

  85. cleansing. In the Savior's precious blood

  86. that devine anointing of the spirit of the living God, we

  87. pray for the defeat of Satan, and we pray the Lord.

  88. The purposes of God shall prevail, that thou will be

  89. pleased to encourage and strengthen thy people, save

  90. precious souls, and gracious God, glorify thyself.

  91. Remember those who are here. Remember those who are

  92. listening. Online we pray the Lord in every

  93. case God will speak in his own. Way.

  94. And by his mighty irresistible power.

  95. Lord, hear us now and abide with us.

  96. We pray for we ask it in the dear Savior's name and for his

  97. sake. Amen.

  98. I want to take as my text tonight the verse #26 of Matthew

  99. 16. For what is a man profited, if

  100. he should gain the whole world and lose his own soul?

  101. Or what shall the man give in exchange for his soul?

  102. The value? Of a soul.

  103. That's what we want to meditate upon tonight.

  104. The value of a soul. It will shed considerable light

  105. on our text to consider the the context or the passage in which

  106. this text is given. Of course, that is paramount in

  107. every occasion. Always keep things and

  108. understand them fully in the context in which they are given.

  109. Christ in this chapter has been Speaking of his approaching

  110. sufferings and agonies and death on the cross.

  111. And so we see a change of emphasis as he gives to us there

  112. in the verse #21 read there. From that time forth Jesus began

  113. to show unto his disciples how that he must go on to Jerusalem,

  114. and there he would eventually bleed and die for his own

  115. redeemed people, for those who are the elect of.

  116. God. So he's been Speaking of his

  117. approaching death on the cross, and that of course the great

  118. purpose was, by means of that death, to save sinners from

  119. their sin, and from the eternal agonies and sufferings of hell.

  120. At the same time he reveals to his disciples that they too must

  121. suffer, that there can be no crown apart from the cross.

  122. And there must be this strict obedience to the word of God.

  123. Verse #24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man would

  124. come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross

  125. and follow me. Peter didn't want to hear that.

  126. He didn't want to hear about the Lord going to the cross.

  127. He didn't want to hear this truth that the Christian also

  128. has a cross. It's not the cross of Christ,

  129. but it is our own Christ, cross, cross, and it is very heavy to

  130. bear. At times.

  131. So there must be this ongoing, strict obedience to the word of

  132. God. These are the terms.

  133. These are the conditions that God sits out.

  134. So far as his disciples are concerned.

  135. He makes it clear. And we would say tonight, make

  136. no doubt about it, it costs. It costs to be a Christian.

  137. There is a cross to be born, not worn, but a cross to be born.

  138. The Christian is to crucify. That's a very strong word.

  139. It's a violent word. The Kingdom of heaven suffer

  140. violence and the violent taken by force.

  141. He is to crucify self daily with his last, with his passions,

  142. with his desires. He is to put that old man to

  143. death. That's a great cost.

  144. So he must crucify self daily. He must overcome the world

  145. daily. There's a tremendous power and

  146. pull in the world. He must overcome Satan and

  147. resist Satan daily. One day does not guarantee

  148. victory the next day, and so it must be a day by day experience

  149. of denying Self. The Lord in verse 25 in essence

  150. is saying, when we read For whosoever will save his life

  151. shall lose it, and whosoever will lose his life for my sake

  152. shall find it. He is saying that he who lives

  153. for Me and denies himself will live eternally, but he who lives

  154. for self and denies Me. Shall die eternally.

  155. You see, lest they would be followers of Christ should

  156. consider the cost of the cyber ship too great, he would have

  157. them consider the cost of not following him.

  158. Verse 26. For what is a man profited if he

  159. should gain the whole world and lose his own soul?

  160. Or what shall a man give in exchange?

  161. For his soul, maybe that thought has gone across your mind in

  162. times past, perhaps even recently, you've considered this

  163. thought, and you've perhaps said to yourself that the cost,

  164. surely, of becoming a Christian is too great.

  165. It's not worth it, my friend. Have you ever counted the cost

  166. of not becoming a Christian? Of not being saved?

  167. Have you ever counted the cost? If your soul should be lost, I

  168. want tonight to leave with you three things concerning the

  169. human soul. First of all, it's reality.

  170. This isn't a make, believe, thought, this matter of a man or

  171. woman having a soul. This is the truth of the word of

  172. God. We want to consider it reality.

  173. And then secondly, it's riches, The value of a soul.

  174. And then finally, bless God is redemption.

  175. It can be saved. It can be lost.

  176. But it can be saved, and may the Lord help us all to see the

  177. incomparable loss of a lost soul.

  178. Next time we stand around the open grave and consider which

  179. individuals gone into eternity. Perhaps outside of Christ, we

  180. should always be reminded of the incomparable loss of a lost

  181. soul. May the Lord impress upon all

  182. her heart, saved and unsaved alike.

  183. The great value of a soul. Now first of all, then it's

  184. reality. In this verse #26 we read these

  185. expressions. For what does the man profited

  186. If you'll gain the whole world and lose his own soul?

  187. Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

  188. I was thinking this afternoon about the wonderful beginning of

  189. the soul. I'll read the verse for you.

  190. Genesis 2, verse 7. And the Lord God formed man of

    Genesis 2:7

  191. the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the

  192. breath of life. And man became a living soul.

  193. The life of the body is the living, the life giving soul.

  194. It actuates the body. The soul can live without the

  195. body, but the body cannot live without the soul.

  196. And Adam's lifeless body, his body of dust was.

  197. Just that, a body lifeless, until he received from God a

  198. living soul, his own soul, and it was entrusted with the soul.

  199. And God has entrusted you with your soul.

  200. It is entrusted to each and every individual.

  201. At the very moment of conception, you and I were

  202. constituted body and soul, and we're stamped, as it were, with

  203. accountability and responsibility to our Creator.

  204. This is God speaking. Here God the great Creator, the

  205. one who has made the soul, can speak with absolute certainty

  206. and assurance, and so we can be absolutely sure of the existence

  207. of the human soul. In this, of course, we differ

  208. greatly from the animal realm, which has neither soul nor

  209. conscience, but that's not true of man.

  210. It's not true of you. It's not true of me.

  211. Every one of us has this soul made by God and entrusted to us.

  212. You have a soul, and how you treat that soul, what you do

  213. with that soul in this life will determine where you're going to

  214. be in the life to come. The reality is, you and I have

  215. been given a living soul, A soul that can be lost, but a soul

  216. also that can be saved. And should it be lost, our blood

  217. will be upon our own heads. God warrant in the book of

  218. Ezekiel, The soul that sineth, it shall die, die eternally.

  219. So it is the sinner's own sin that brings about the loss of

  220. his own soul. The soul that sineth Isn't that

  221. you? Isn't that me?

  222. The soul that sineth, naturally it shall die.

  223. And die eternally. You see how honest God is here,

  224. how true He's being to your soul and mine.

  225. When Satan seeks to draw away disciples or followers after

  226. him, what does he do? He tells them of the pleasures.

  227. He tells them to all the apparent gains, but not the

  228. peril, not the pain, he said to the sineres.

  229. He said to Eve, on that occasion, the Garden of Eden, he

  230. shall not surely die. Adam and Eve were commanded not

  231. to eat of that fruit, not to touch it, not even to touch that

  232. fruit in the midst of the garden, unless they die.

  233. They can eat all the other trees.

  234. But that one tree in the middle, they were not to touch it.

  235. They were not to partake of it, because God very clearly said,

  236. the moment you do that, you're going to die.

  237. And long come, say, oh, come on now, you'll not surely die.

  238. Go in God's favor is life. He's not going to kill you.

  239. He's giving you life. A loving God wouldn't do that.

  240. Just just think about it. And he said very clearly, ye

  241. shall not. Come on now, Eve, get serious.

  242. God has better things in store. You eat of that fruit you're

  243. going to be entering in a whole new.

  244. There are opportunities. You're going to become like one

  245. of the gods, even an object of worship.

  246. Don't deny yourself that. Eat it, ye shall not surely die.

  247. But he's a liar. And when they disobeyed God and

  248. took of the forbidden fruit, they did die.

  249. They died immediately. Spiritually.

  250. Fellowship with the God was cut off.

  251. What a terrible death that was. They died spiritually.

  252. Eventually they would die physically because the seeds of

  253. death were planted in their mortal bodies, and were it not

  254. for God's mercy, they would have died eternally.

  255. The soul that's in it, it shall die, dear friend, is not your

  256. neighbor's soul, or the soul is limited next to you there in the

  257. Pew. It is your soul.

  258. That you stand to lose. And unthinkable as it is, should

  259. it be lost, literally damned, you will give before God a full

  260. account of your sin and the inexcusable neglect of your

  261. soul. God has given you a soul, and

  262. you're going to be held responsible in terms of how you

  263. deal with that soul. When you were conceived, When I

  264. was conceived, oh, there was a tremendous, A tremendous weight

  265. of responsibility forced upon us, placed upon us that we use

  266. the time God has given to us for the salvation of our own soul.

  267. Men live and die without many cases.

  268. The thought of the soul. What, fools, how strong is the

  269. temptations, as Satan says before that precious.

  270. Precious soul. So if I were to say to you

  271. tonight that out there in the car park your your car is being

  272. broken into or that your bank is being emptied, if you stand to

  273. lose your car and your money, wouldn't you do something about

  274. it if I was there, there in the car?

  275. But look, that man out there, he's, he's trying to get into

  276. your car. Would you just sit here?

  277. I don't think so if you knew someone was out there emptying

  278. your bank account. I'm quite sure that you would do

  279. what you can and could to prevent that particular loss.

  280. Well, how much more careful should we be when it comes to

  281. the eternal soul, that costliest commodity in the whole world?

  282. Now that brings us, secondly, to the thought of its riches or its

  283. value. So have you seen something of

  284. the reality of the soul? That is something, man?

  285. Has a difficulty naturally grappling with.

  286. He doesn't like to think of this fact that he is a soul that

  287. lives on and survives, that the death of the mortal body, that

  288. we're not just creatures of time, we're creatures of

  289. eternity. And this is the fearful thought.

  290. And men ought of course, to live with this fear upon their hearts

  291. and upon. They are souls.

  292. But many deny the very existence of the soul.

  293. The Bible is explicitly clear. Every man born of Adam's rate

  294. has a soul. Well, what does it value?

  295. What do you think of his birth? You think of his beginning.

  296. The human soul begins with the breath of God.

  297. We read there and Genesis chapter 2 and verse 7.

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  298. How noble a beginning, the very breath of God was breathed into

  299. the nostrils of our first. Of Adam.

  300. And that of course tells us that he became a a living soul.

  301. That's that's the beginning, that's the birth.

  302. But about his breath, that's range of capabilities.

  303. The soul of course is made in the image of God, but just think

  304. about that. If it is made in the image of

  305. God and the Bible says it is, then it must possess abilities,

  306. qualities, capacities. That set men apart from all

  307. other created beings and underlines the fact that the

  308. soul is infinitely precious. It is that part of the

  309. individual that thinks that reasons.

  310. It's a seed of thought. You remember Lazarus and the

  311. rich man, and the rich man in hell lifting up his eyes, being

  312. in torments he he had. This recollection of Lazarus and

  313. Lazarus to to give me some water, like, and just dip my

  314. tongue in that water. So he remembered Lazarus, no

  315. doubt how he treated them woefully.

  316. He remembered that he had five brethren and he wanted them to

  317. be worn. Let's take him into that fearful

  318. place. So he had memory.

  319. He didn't lose it when he went to hell.

  320. That soul has the ability to think, to reason, to have.

  321. Will and to conscience. It possesses morality.

  322. It can show love. It can show pity.

  323. It can show justice. It can show mercy.

  324. And don't miss this now. That soul is immortal, just like

  325. God, made in the image of God. And it can never be annihilated.

  326. It can never go to sleep. It exists forever.

  327. There is some proportion or comparison between a single drop

  328. of water. In the ocean, but there is no

  329. comparison. There is no proportion between

  330. time and eternity. And after the death of the body,

  331. the soul continues to exist eternally, either in heaven or

  332. in hell. Now are we beginning to see

  333. something of its infinite worth? What are 70 years compared to

  334. eternity? It just goes on living and

  335. existing. For all of God's eternity.

  336. What about his battle? We have something that's birth,

  337. something of its breath and range of capabilities.

  338. What about his battle battling for its possession?

  339. Well, Satan wants the soul to damn it.

  340. He's seeking for your soul. Tonight, he promises the world

  341. sun, moon, and stars. He can't deliver on that.

  342. But this is the promise he sets before it.

  343. You do this. You serve me, you serve yourself

  344. and it'll be well with you. You get everything.

  345. Well. He wants the soul to to to damn

  346. the soul. Christ, on the other hand, he

  347. wants a soul that he may save the soul.

  348. And he promises, Yes, promises are good for this life, but

  349. especially for the life that is to come, Christ is saying.

  350. This is a man where they gain the entire world.

  351. Now, there's no pain with that gain that's going to cause

  352. something. If he were to gain the entire

  353. world, it's never happened yet, never will happen.

  354. But this is the hypothetical case.

  355. All its wealth, honor, pleasure, possessions, lands, houses, and

  356. then there's it all. Of course we're going to lose it

  357. all anyway. When death comes, we brought

  358. nothing into this world, and it's certain we can carry

  359. nothing out. But that soul, having

  360. accumulated all that this world could offer and then suddenly

  361. lost it, his loss would be far less than that of a Sinner

  362. losing his soul. One soul is worth far, far more

  363. than the whole world put together.

  364. And that's how Christ sees it. And he would have you see it in

  365. the same way, begin to think the same thoughts as Christ.

  366. This is how he sees it. This is the way it is.

  367. And, dear friend, you had better just begin to see it in the same

  368. way before you lose your soul. How often, too, have men and

  369. women found that the things of this world are empty and

  370. unsatisfying? They promised far more than they

  371. ever deliver. The daughter of one of our

  372. ministers, who shall remain nameless, was a brilliant

  373. lawyer. And for her, the sky was the

  374. limit. She had the prospect of being

  375. wined and dined open doors far and near.

  376. She had the world at her feet. But she parked it all in and her

  377. coworkers, solicitors, lawyers, said, you're mad, you're mad,

  378. you could have it all. And she said to her mother, I've

  379. seen what money does to people. And I don't want end of like

  380. that. I want to give my life to the

  381. Lord Jesus Christ who loved me and gave himself for me.

  382. The world is highly overrated. After some 64 years.

  383. I just turned 64. There are things in this world

  384. that I enjoy, but I can tell you it's highly, highly overrated.

  385. And yet many, many have bought into the devil's lie.

  386. Get what you can go over the gusto.

  387. Live this life. That's all you have. 70 years.

  388. If you haven't, do that. But that's just the beginning.

  389. And so this world brings far less than it ever promises.

  390. It's highly overrelated. It's not worth losing your soul

  391. over. Certainly not worth it.

  392. Yet how many multitudes even now are casting, throwing away their

  393. soul for a few of the life they the bubbles?

  394. Of this particular life there can be no greater loss than the

  395. loss of the soul, for it brings the loss of holiness, the loss

  396. of happiness, the loss of hope, and the loss of heaven.

  397. And should your soul be lost, it has lost forever.

  398. It cannot be retrieved from the eternal regions of pain and woe

  399. and excruciating pain. That can never be listened,

  400. lessened, or mitigated. Remember the rich man?

  401. He pleaded for just a single drop of water, replaced on the

  402. tip of his tongue, but didn't get it.

  403. Just more of the same, more fire.

  404. And the lost soul cannot make an exchange or a payment that will

  405. bring his soul back from the regions of the dime.

  406. And even if it were possible to come up with something as

  407. waiting as valuable as a soul. The Lord will not permit it.

  408. The soul has had its opportunities.

  409. How many years? How many opportunities for

  410. salvation? But they threw it all away, and

  411. justice, and is now final and irreversible.

  412. You had better then begin to make your sums now.

  413. Do your arithmetic now. Consider that nothing can be

  414. greater. And the loss of a soul can't up

  415. the cost of your soul if it should be lost.

  416. But it doesn't have to be lost. It can be saved.

  417. It can be redeemed by the Savior's precious blood.

  418. That's the most wonderful thing. That's the greatest message of

  419. the gospel. God alone can redeem that

  420. precious soul of yours and of mine.

  421. So we come thirdly, to the redemption.

  422. Of the soul. And here we see the full worth

  423. of the soul. In Psalm 49 and verse #8 we read

  424. there of the redemption of the soul being precious and how

  425. precious it is. There is only one payment that

  426. will save the soul. There is only one payment that

  427. will keep a Sinner out of hell. And that is the precious

  428. attaining sin covering blood of Jesus Christ, which He shed on

  429. Calvary's cross for repentant sinners.

  430. There you get the full idea of the cost of the soul.

  431. It cost our Savior, His precious blood to redeem it.

  432. And that that alone is what can redeem your precious soul.

  433. The price has been paid. It has been.

  434. Already counted in so far as God's people are concerned, it

  435. is for you to receive this great gift that the Lord Jesus offers.

  436. Jesus paid it all. See how much He cares and loves

  437. your soul. Perhaps a soul that you have no

  438. love for yourself. He was prepared to give up his

  439. own life's blood that you might have a soul that was redeemed by

  440. that precious blood of his. You care for your body this very

  441. day. You've washed it.

  442. You've fed it. You've clothed it.

  443. What about your soul, That poor soul of yours, Unwashed, starved

  444. and unclothed, not ready to meet the regions of God's great

  445. eternally. But I want to ask you tonight,

  446. will you not insure your soul? You have car insurance.

  447. You have insurance for this. Insurance for that.

  448. What about your soul? Is your soul insured?

  449. Is your soul prepared to meet God?

  450. I took out. And you'll understand what I

  451. mean by this, an insurance policy on my soul.

  452. At the age of 12 and over 50 years, over half a century now,

  453. the policy of God has held good and three difficult

  454. circumstances. I nearly lost my body.

  455. But I did not lose my soul and never will.

  456. Christ has never lost a soul that he is insured that he is

  457. saved. It is 100% safe and 100% sure.

  458. And I would ask you tonight, won't you simply entrust Christ

  459. with your soul? He gave his own life's blood to

  460. redeem it. Could you not trust him with

  461. your soul? With the hand of faces of where,

  462. put your soul into the nail, pierced the hands of Christ, and

  463. be washed in this precious blood, and be saved.

  464. Heaven will more than compensate for any loss that we may hear

  465. down here. For Jesus Christ, I would ask

  466. your friend and I to consider the value of your soul, and make

  467. preparation for that day when you will be ushered into God's

  468. eternity. Where will you be?

  469. In heaven or in hell, make sure that your soul is insured.

  470. Make sure the saved make sure it is washed.

  471. In the Saviors atoning blood. Let's pray our gracious God, our

  472. loving Father, we thank you tonight for Thy precious word.

  473. We thank you for the clear warning here of the Lord Jesus.

  474. We thank that He is so true to our hearts and to our souls and

  475. while Satan seeks to damn the soul by telling all kinds of

  476. lies. We think that the Christ is so

  477. clear. Christ gives a clear warning,

  478. and we pray the Lord we will take Thy words seriously.

  479. And tonight, oh God, should there be a soul here or

  480. listening online out of Christ, soul that does not prepare to

  481. meet God at this very night, they might take stock that they

  482. might do their sons now and realize there's no more

  483. consulate in all this world than their own soul.

  484. May they prepare to meet their God and be redeemed by Precious

  485. Blood, for we ask it in the dear Savior's name and for his sake.

  486. Amen.
