  1. Those are safety features. I want to get those cords out of the way.

  2. Well, so far this morning, it's already been eventful.

  3. We kind of challenged you on offering to see, right?

  4. And I understand Tom shared that there was an ambulance here and someone was taken away.

  5. Who was it?

  6. Pardon?

  7. Oh, Melissa, okay.

  8. Does anybody know what was wrong?

  9. Okay, thank you.

  10. Okay.

  11. So why don't we stop at the very beginning.

  12. This is not the very beginning. I apologize.

  13. That was a preacher's faux pas, not a pastor's faux pas.

  14. Preacher thinks that it gets started when he starts, but that's not true.

  15. Okay?

  16. Theologically inaccurate.

  17. So, but we are going to stop and pray.

  18. Melissa Johnson, pray that whatever's going on,

  19. that she would be fine and that it would be something that we hear good news back on,

  20. and then also that God just gives us a heart to hear the word of God and have it touch us.

  21. Let's pray.

  22. Father, our hearts this morning are quiet before you because we realize our frailty.

  23. We recognize, as Melissa has been taken by the squad, that there's something going on there that needs our prayer.

  24. And knowing so little, other than the greatness of your name and the power that you have,

  25. we are glad to be able to call upon you and just ask that you would touch our sister and strengthen her and raise her up.

  26. We pray also, Father, this morning that your word would have free course in our hearts

  27. and that we would be guarded from sin,

  28. that we would listen carefully,

  29. and that your spirit would take the beauty of your word and etch it into our lives

  30. and cause us to live with joy and power in the Holy Spirit to the testimony of Christ and the cross.

  31. And we're going to give you the glory in advance for what you do in us and around the world.

  32. We ask this in your precious name. Amen.

  33. Well, I want you to turn your Bibles this morning to Ephesians chapter 3.

    Ephesians 3 chapter mention

  34. We're going to pick up, actually, in verse 6 and work our way through.

  35. And as we are studying this passage this morning,

  36. I want you to understand that at the very beginning,

  37. this passage is one where Paul uses an interesting little statement

  38. that in our culture is completely different from the way it was used in the Bible.

  39. When we think about a mystery, how do we think about a mystery?

  40. A mystery is something where there's a key part that we really don't know

  41. and we're kind of curious about what's going to happen.

  42. We watch mystery theater.

  43. We read mystery novels on occasion.

  44. We're looking for some kind of detail that's hidden and not understood

  45. and we can't get our hands on it.

  46. In the ancient world, a mystery was completely different from that.

  47. A mystery was actually something that was understood only by those who were part of the inner circle.

  48. And they were told the secrets of that mystery.

  49. A mystery religion was a religion where only those who were initiated into the group

  50. had access both to the information and to the place of worship.

  51. And those who were initiated, they had secret handshake or they had secret signals

  52. and they communicated all through this kind of mumbo-jumbo and that was a mystery.

  53. And in order to be part of that mystery, you had to be invited in

  54. and they had to learn all these important things and the mystery was something that was revealed.

  55. Paul uses the word mystery four different times in this chapter

  56. and we're not going to pick up on all of them because we touched on them a little bit last week,

  57. but we're going to move through and understand the secrets that God has shared with us as believers.

  58. And as we look at this passage, I want you to pick up with me there in verse 6.

  59. He says,

  60. This mystery is that the Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body,

  61. and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.

  62. So as we get started understanding this mystery,

  63. as I've already pointed out, a mystery in the New Testament,

  64. different than for us, a mystery that is not understood.

  65. In the Bible, a mystery is something that only those who are initiated understand.

  66. And the fact that Paul speaks about Christ and the gospel as being a mystery

  67. is both biblically consistent and also telling.

  68. It announces something.

  69. Jesus made it clear, actually, that spiritual truth and spiritual matters

  70. are not simply understood by applying human intellect.

  71. If I were to throw out a relatively simple math problem,

  72. if you had been exposed to math previously,

  73. 2 plus 2, I'm kind of at my level here.

  74. Do you follow me?

  75. But if I did 2 plus 2, most everybody here that's beyond 5 or 6 could say what?

  76. 4.

  77. And I would say, good job.

  78. If I went a little further than that,

  79. we'd begin to kind of weed out those who have not learned all those details, right?

  80. Because they were kind of confusing to us.

  81. And Jesus made it clear that spiritual truth was not just understood by mere intellect.

  82. Turn in your Bible so we see this for ourselves.

  83. Go over to Luke chapter 10, verse 21 and 22.

    Luke 10:21

  84. The context is that earlier Jesus had sent out His disciples to preach the gospel,

  85. to announce the kingdom, and they returned.

  86. And when they came up, came back,

  87. they were really enthused about the tremendous blessing that they had had

  88. in preaching the gospel, announcing the kingdom,

  89. and seeing God do some miraculous things.

  90. And they're kind of whooping it up because of what they'd seen happen.

  91. And Jesus said, hey, listen, this is the thing that really ought to fire you up,

  92. the fact that your name is written in the book of life,

  93. that you're a child of God.

  94. And on that statement, He then goes on in verse 21.

  95. He says,

  96. In the same hour, He rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said,

  97. I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth,

  98. that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding

  99. and revealed them to little children.

  100. Yes, Father, for such is your or was your gracious will.

  101. All things have been handed over to me by my Father,

  102. and no one knows who the Son is except the Father,

  103. or who the Father is except the Son,

  104. and everyone to whom the Son, what's the next word?

  105. chooses to reveal Him.

  106. So how is it that there are some of you sitting here this morning

  107. that know who Jesus Christ is?

  108. Did that really happen because you had a different intellectual capacity

  109. than other people that you work with that when they use the word Jesus Christ,

  110. what's their means of, what are they saying?

  111. It's an oath.

  112. It's an expression of a curse word or something like that.

  113. They don't have a personal relationship with Christ.

  114. They don't think in those terms.

  115. Why is it that you do?

  116. It says here,

  117. God in His kindness has chosen to reveal this mystery to you.

  118. We look over at another passage that makes it clear to us,

  119. and if you would, look in 1 Corinthians 2.

  120. 1 Corinthians 2, verse 2 through 7.

    1 Corinthians 2:2–7

  121. Chapter 2, verse 7 through 14,

  122. and I'm not going to take all the passage,

  123. but just kind of touch this.

  124. It says,

  125. Does that make sense?

  126. Do you think if Satan understood the plan of redemption,

  127. he would have partnered with the Roman government to put Christ on the cross?

  128. What's the answer?

  129. I mean, when he thought the victory was his,

  130. he was actually driving the last nail into his own coffin and his destruction.

  131. Isn't that right?

  132. And why did that happen?

  133. Here's what it says.

  134. If the rulers of this age had understood this,

  135. for if they had,

  136. they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

  137. And as we work our way on down through,

  138. look at verse 10.

  139. These things,

  140. God has revealed to us through the Spirit,

  141. for the Spirit searches everything,

  142. even the depths of God.

  143. And then he goes on,

  144. and he says there in verse 12,

  145. Now we have received not the Spirit of the world,

  146. but the Spirit who is from God,

  147. that we might understand the things freely given to us by God.

  148. Why is it that you understand spiritual truth?

  149. What's the answer?

  150. We understand spiritual truth because of the blessing of the work of God in our lives

  151. that has revealed these truths to us,

  152. and they humble us,

  153. and they also cause us to be thankful.

  154. And Paul speaks of these spiritual truths,

  155. and he says,

  156. Listen,

  157. it's because of the grace of God that you understand these things

  158. and can recognize them to be true.

  159. Now,

  160. you look here in the passage going back to Ephesians chapter 3,

    Ephesians 3 chapter mention

  161. and we need to understand that the mystery Paul wrote about

  162. is all about Christ and His salvation.

  163. That's what the mystery consists of,

  164. in broad terms.

  165. But we break it down in this passage,

  166. and there are references to different pieces of it.

  167. In one sense,

  168. part of the overarching issue is the mystery of redemption,

  169. what He did in saving us.

  170. And there is a reference to that mystery of redemption

  171. over in Hebrews chapter 3, verse 20.

  172. I'm not going to have you turn there,

  173. but recognize that when we think about what God has done in saving us,

  174. it is a mystery that if we were not told about it,

  175. we wouldn't understand it.

  176. I want you to think just for a moment.

  177. Earlier this morning,

  178. as I was meditating and praying about Sunday

  179. and the passage that we were going to look at,

  180. I was kind of putting myself in Adam and Eve's shoes after they sinned.

  181. I mean,

  182. can you imagine the absolute horror that came over their conscience

  183. as they thought about the terrifying reality

  184. that they had offended the supreme God and creator of this universe?

  185. When we sin,

  186. and we sin often,

  187. we have kind of a practiced indifference to it

  188. because we do it so often.

  189. Do you understand that?

  190. But for Adam and Eve's conscience

  191. to be struck for the very first time in history

  192. by the appalling nature of sin,

  193. it must have been terrifying.

  194. And God comes into the garden

  195. and He's looking for them

  196. and they're hiding.

  197. Can you just think with me

  198. about the absolute futility of Adam and Eve

  199. hiding from God?

  200. Have you ever played hide and seek with your kids

  201. when they were small?

  202. And they hide in the most obvious place.

  203. You close your eyes and you count to ten.

  204. And then they hide behind the couch

  205. and the only part that's really hidden is what part?

  206. Their head.

  207. The rest of it's sticking out from behind the couch

  208. and all you have to do to give them away

  209. or get them to give themselves away

  210. is say,

  211. I wonder where...

  212. And they begin doing what?

  213. They begin giggling.

  214. And so you go...

  215. If you walk out of the room and say,

  216. I'll bet you they've left the room,

  217. the little child does what?

  218. No, no, I didn't leave the room.

  219. You know, they've got to give it all away.

  220. Just imagine the absolute ridiculous idea

  221. of hiding from God.

  222. And here's Adam and Eve tucked away.

  223. Who knows where?

  224. Behind a bush or something like that.

  225. And God shows up and...

  226. What's going on?

  227. And just think about what happens.

  228. God covers their sinful flesh with a skin.

  229. What did they try to cover it with already?

  230. Leaves.

  231. And in that covering

  232. was the first indication

  233. of the shedding of blood

  234. for the covering for sin.

  235. And then God makes an announcement.

  236. He says,

  237. He says,

  238. Listen,

  239. You will bruise

  240. His head

  241. and He will bruise your heel.

  242. Speaking of Christ

  243. and the plan of redemption.

  244. I know Tom.

  245. Tom is teaching on Christ

  246. in the Old Testament

  247. and one of the very first,

  248. the proto-evangelism,

  249. it talks about the first time it appears

  250. is in that phrase.

  251. And it's interesting

  252. that when Adam and Eve had a son,

  253. their first son,

  254. do you know what they expected

  255. that first son to perhaps be?

  256. Does anybody know?

  257. This is the guy.

  258. This is the one.

  259. This is the Messiah who's coming.

  260. That was their ambition.

  261. They were looking

  262. for the solution

  263. to their sinful heart.

  264. And all the way down

  265. through the Old Testament,

  266. the symbolism of sacrifice,

  267. Abraham on Mount Moriah,

  268. David when he sacrificed there

  269. to stop the plague,

  270. the temple built there,

  271. and later Christ crucified.

  272. The plan of redemption

  273. is a plan that God revealed to us

  274. and beloved,

  275. would we have figured it out

  276. apart from Him telling us

  277. and the answer is,

  278. not at all.

  279. It's a mystery

  280. that He's given to us.

  281. A second part of the mystery

  282. that we find particularly here

  283. in Ephesians chapter 2

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  284. is the mystery

  285. of His inclusion

  286. of Gentiles as His people.

  287. Prior to the New Testament,

  288. the way for a Gentile

  289. to become a part

  290. of the family of God

  291. was only through

  292. becoming a Jew.

  293. And God opens up

  294. and reveals to Jew and Gentile

  295. that His plan of redemption

  296. does not have

  297. that complicated layer

  298. of Judaism

  299. and those laws,

  300. but rather it is

  301. all of grace.

  302. And apart from grace,

  303. there is no salvation.

  304. And as we look at the passage

  305. actually in Ephesians chapter 3,

    Ephesians 3 chapter mention

  306. look where it says there

  307. talking about this mystery

  308. of the Gentile.

  309. Now, it says,

  310. this mystery is that

  311. the Gentiles are fellow heirs,

  312. members of the same body,

  313. and partakers of the promise

  314. in Christ Jesus

  315. through the gospel.

  316. Now, in the English translation,

  317. the hammer blows

  318. of what Paul is saying

  319. are a little muted for us

  320. because what Paul does

  321. is he takes three Greek root words

  322. and he puts a little preface

  323. at the beginning of them

  324. to make it very, very clear.

  325. In essence, what he is saying

  326. is that Gentile believers are,

  327. and he uses the word soon,

  328. which means with,

  329. he says Gentiles are heirs with.

  330. He says Gentiles are members with.

  331. He says that Gentiles

  332. are partakers with.

  333. And he's talking about the fact

  334. that God has taken two

  335. and put them together

  336. by His grace.

  337. And because of that,

  338. there is no second-class citizenry

  339. in the body of Christ.

  340. We are all together

  341. members of the body

  342. and the bride of Christ,

  343. equally in the eyes of God.

  344. The third part of this mystery

  345. that we find in the scriptures

  346. is that we have the privilege

  347. of a personal relationship with Christ.

  348. I don't know whether that overwhelms you,

  349. but, beloved, it should.

  350. The truth of the matter is

  351. is that apart from Christ,

  352. we would be aliens to God,

  353. we would be enemies with God,

  354. we would have no intimate communion

  355. or relationship with God.

  356. And I was having a great time

  357. this morning explaining

  358. the example prayer

  359. that we find in Luke,

  360. and we find it in Matthew.

  361. How does the prayer start

  362. that's an example for us?

  363. What do we say?

  364. Our Father.

  365. Does that give you cold chills

  366. when you stop and think

  367. about what that says?

  368. Hey, if you know anything

  369. about the other religions

  370. in the world,

  371. they have no idea

  372. of a personal, intimate relationship

  373. with the Creator and God

  374. of this universe.

  375. And we, because of Christ,

  376. have the privilege and blessing

  377. of being in personal relationship

  378. with Him.

  379. And, beloved,

  380. when we stop and think about that,

  381. that ought to quiet our uncertain

  382. and frail heart

  383. and encourage us

  384. to be profoundly thankful

  385. in the blessing we have

  386. in Christ Jesus.

  387. Let me give you a little sidebar.

  388. I read,

  389. I just finished up a book

  390. called God's at War

  391. by Kyle Eidelman.

  392. You want to read a good book?

  393. That's a good one.

  394. Tag it.

  395. It's a good one.

  396. And as I was coming

  397. towards the end of the book,

  398. it's talking about

  399. the struggle that we have

  400. with idolizing ourself.

  401. How many of you realize

  402. that every day when you wake up,

  403. there's this little niggling interest

  404. of being an idol yourself?

  405. You want everybody to bow

  406. to the idolatry of you.

  407. And he said,

  408. it's actually been amped up

  409. on steroids.

  410. Five researchers

  411. in San Diego State University

  412. have done,

  413. I think it is from 1986 to 2007,

  414. they have interviewed

  415. 16,000 college students

  416. about the problem

  417. with narcissism.

  418. Do you know what narcissism is?

  419. Let me give you the end story

  420. of what narcissism is.

  421. How many of you remember

  422. singing,

  423. Frere Jacques,

  424. Frere Jacques,

  425. Dormez-vous?

  426. Here is the contemporary version

  427. of Frere Jacques.

  428. I am special,

  429. I am special,

  430. yes I am,

  431. yes I am.

  432. Isn't that good?

  433. Isn't that a good song?

  434. Anyway,

  435. some of you probably

  436. sang it in school.

  437. But this study

  438. revealed that

  439. there has been

  440. an absolute skyrocketing

  441. issue with narcissism.

  442. People who are narcissists

  443. think such things as

  444. if I were in charge

  445. the world would be

  446. a better place.

  447. Okay?

  448. Now when you have

  449. ten people in the room

  450. thinking the same thing,

  451. guess what you automatically have?

  452. The narcissist thinks

  453. when I'm getting my way

  454. things are good.

  455. The narcissist

  456. is pretty full of themself.

  457. Incidentally,

  458. the narcissist

  459. has profound trouble

  460. in lasting relationships.

  461. The narcissist

  462. by the survey

  463. is far more inclined

  464. to be dishonest

  465. and cheat.

  466. cannot sustain

  467. integrity

  468. in any kind of task.

  469. Incidentally,

  470. very curiously,

  471. these researchers

  472. began asking

  473. when did narcissism

  474. begin to develop

  475. into a predominant character

  476. of American culture?

  477. Guess when it happened?

  478. Back in 1980,

  479. our culture

  480. was swept away

  481. by the self-esteem movement.

  482. and these

  483. unbelieving

  484. researchers

  485. at San Diego State University

  486. began making

  487. a correlation

  488. between the

  489. I am special,

  490. I am special,

  491. yes,

  492. I am,

  493. and the struggle

  494. with our culture

  495. with everybody

  496. becoming self-focused

  497. and nobody thinking

  498. about anybody else

  499. but themselves.

  500. Listen to me.

  501. There is no remedy

  502. to be found

  503. for that incessant battle

  504. other than

  505. in a joyful

  506. and personal

  507. relationship

  508. with the Lord

  509. of glory

  510. and that is why.

  511. I love the truth

  512. of salvation.

  513. It delivers me

  514. from the absolute

  515. tyranny

  516. of self-centered living.

  517. And as we look

  518. at this passage,

  519. Paul says,

  520. listen,

  521. it's my privilege

  522. to talk to you

  523. about the mystery

  524. that God has revealed

  525. to us.

  526. I want you to notice

  527. something else

  528. in relationship

  529. to this mystery

  530. talking about

  531. announcing the mystery

  532. and we see that

  533. in the passage

  534. in 7 through 9

  535. of this gospel,

  536. Paul says,

  537. I was made

  538. a minister

  539. according to the gift

  540. of God's grace

  541. which was given to me

  542. by the working

  543. of His power.

  544. Stop just for a moment

  545. and think with me.

  546. When we find something

  547. in scripture,

  548. it is there

  549. because Paul thought

  550. it was a good idea

  551. to include.

  552. Is that the answer?

  553. Or,

  554. B,

  555. the Spirit of God

  556. put it there

  557. for our benefit

  558. and our edification.

  559. It's there

  560. because the Spirit

  561. of God

  562. thinks it's for our benefit

  563. and edification.

  564. And so,

  565. when we read here

  566. that Paul announces

  567. this truth

  568. in relationship

  569. to himself

  570. of this gospel,

  571. I was made

  572. a minister

  573. according to the gift

  574. of God's grace,

  575. we understand

  576. that Paul is saying

  577. something about

  578. those who are messengers.

  579. And put it this way,

  580. godly messengers

  581. are marked

  582. by genuine humility.

  583. Paul's declaration

  584. here of self-perception

  585. is that he's saying,

  586. listen,

  587. this is what I am

  588. and mark what he says.

  589. I am the very least

  590. of all the saints.

  591. Now,

  592. is he just being,

  593. is he just exercising

  594. false humility?

  595. Let me give you

  596. a picture

  597. of false humility

  598. so you understand

  599. what it is.

  600. Just let's say

  601. that an exceptionally

  602. attractive woman

  603. goes into the dressing room

  604. and puts on a lovely dress

  605. and she walks out

  606. and she really does

  607. look pretty good,

  608. but what she says

  609. to her friends

  610. that are gathered around

  611. is what?

  612. What's she say?

  613. Oh,

  614. this dress makes me

  615. look too fat.

  616. She says,

  617. this dress probably

  618. doesn't look good on me.

  619. What is she looking for?

  620. Guys,

  621. what's she looking for?

  622. What's she looking for?

  623. In fact,

  624. she's just looking

  625. for affirmation,

  626. isn't she?

  627. She looks at herself

  628. in the mirror

  629. and she thinks,

  630. well,

  631. I'm looking pretty good.

  632. And what do you think?

  633. I mean,

  634. she's looking for someone else

  635. to agree with her.

  636. She wants someone else

  637. to bow at her idolatry,

  638. right?

  639. And kind of agree

  640. with her value.

  641. Paul,

  642. when he says

  643. what he does

  644. in verse 8

  645. where he says,

  646. I am less than least

  647. of all the saints,

  648. I want you to understand

  649. that he is speaking

  650. the truth

  651. about what God

  652. has helped him

  653. understand about himself.

  654. And Paul saw himself

  655. first as an appointed servant.

  656. Look at what it says

  657. there in verse 7.

  658. I was made a minister

  659. according to the gift

  660. of God's grace.

  661. And incidentally,

  662. that word minister there

  663. is the word

  664. from which we get deacon.

  665. Paul says,

  666. I am a deacon.

  667. I am a deacon

  668. according to the gift

  669. of God's grace.

  670. And God is at work in me.

  671. He has given me

  672. this responsibility.

  673. He saw that his task

  674. and his responsibility

  675. was not a career choice

  676. but something that God

  677. had laid on him.

  678. I want you to understand also

  679. that Paul in his ministry

  680. and we see his humility

  681. by the fact that he was not

  682. an arrogant and combative person.

  683. I want you to turn back

  684. just a little bit

  685. if you would actually

  686. turn forward

  687. to 2 Timothy.

  688. Go to 2 Timothy chapter 2

    2 Timothy 2:24

  689. verse 24 and 25.

  690. What was Paul like

  691. in ministry to other people

  692. in his circle?

  693. Chapter 2 verse 24.

  694. 2 Timothy chapter 2

    2 Timothy 2:24

  695. verse 24 and 25.

  696. It says,

  697. The Lord's servant

  698. must not be quarrelsome

  699. but be kind to everyone,

  700. able to teach,

  701. patiently enduring evil,

  702. correcting his opponents

  703. with gentleness.

  704. God may perhaps

  705. grant them repentance

  706. leading to the knowledge

  707. of the truth.

  708. So what kind of characteristic

  709. was Paul displaying

  710. in his ministry?

  711. Did he thump and strut?

  712. Did he walk around

  713. with a cudgel

  714. letting people

  715. that disagreed with him

  716. know that there was

  717. a consequence

  718. for crossing him?

  719. Not at all.

  720. He was marked

  721. by humility and tenderness

  722. and that was the characteristic

  723. of his heart

  724. because he saw himself

  725. as least of the saints.

  726. I want you to mark also

  727. that his life was marked

  728. by an affection

  729. for other people.

  730. As you read your way

  731. through the pastoral epistles

  732. you see that Paul speaks

  733. about his relationship

  734. with the body of Christ

  735. being that like a nursing mother

  736. caring for those people.

  737. and how was Paul treated

  738. by some of the people

  739. that he cared for?

  740. Does anybody have an idea?

  741. Always favorably,

  742. always appreciated,

  743. always loved,

  744. not at all.

  745. In fact,

  746. in the very last days

  747. of Paul's life

  748. most everyone

  749. who he had served

  750. and ministered to,

  751. those that he poured

  752. his life in

  753. turned away

  754. and walked from him.

  755. And here's what Paul says.

  756. He says,

  757. do not hold it

  758. to their charge.

  759. He's praying to God

  760. and says don't hold it

  761. to their charge.

  762. I want you to recognize

  763. one other thing

  764. as you go back

  765. to that passage

  766. in Ephesians.

  767. Let's look at Ephesians

    Ephesians 3 chapter mention

  768. chapter 3

  769. and pick up

  770. what we find there

  771. as we continue

  772. working through it.

  773. He says here

  774. to bring to light

  775. in verse 9

  776. to bring to light

  777. for everyone

  778. what is the plan

  779. of the mystery

  780. hidden for ages

  781. in God

  782. who created all things.

  783. So we see

  784. the humility

  785. of a servant

  786. but then secondly

  787. we see that

  788. godly messengers

  789. see the gospel

  790. as being something

  791. for everyone.

  792. I appreciate the fact

  793. that Paul

  794. had no hesitation

  795. to make it very,

  796. very clear

  797. that the doctrine

  798. of election

  799. and predestination

  800. are stated in the gospel

  801. but on the other hand

  802. what was Paul's attitude

  803. towards preaching?

  804. Was there any place

  805. that he wouldn't preach?

  806. He'd preach in a synagogue

  807. wouldn't he?

  808. And when he went

  809. into the synagogue

  810. as his ministry developed

  811. did he anticipate

  812. that everybody

  813. was going to love him

  814. and just appreciate

  815. the gospel ministry

  816. that he has?

  817. Not at all.

  818. He appreciated

  819. the privilege he had

  820. of being the messenger

  821. of the gospel

  822. and he was not put off

  823. by the treatment

  824. that he received.

  825. Paul preached in prison.

  826. He preached

  827. in the marketplace.

  828. He preached

  829. down by the riverside.

  830. He preached

  831. to prisoners.

  832. He preached

  833. to soldiers

  834. who were chained

  835. to Paul

  836. and everywhere

  837. he preached

  838. I think one of the things

  839. that you need

  840. to understand

  841. about Paul's preaching

  842. is that he preached

  843. with a passion

  844. and an earnestness

  845. to see people

  846. come to Christ.

  847. Turn over

  848. if you would

  849. to 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

  850. chapter 5

  851. and mark the spirit

  852. that he had

  853. in preaching.

  854. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 5:20

  855. chapter 5

  856. verse 20

  857. he says this

  858. as he describes

  859. his preaching

  860. therefore we are

  861. ambassadors for Christ

  862. God making his appeal

  863. through us

  864. we implore you

  865. in the King James

  866. I think it says

  867. we plead with you

  868. in Christ's stead

  869. so when Paul

  870. preached the gospel

  871. to people

  872. day in and day out

  873. whether it was

  874. in prison or the synagogue

  875. what kind of affection

  876. and passion

  877. did he have for doing it?

  878. There was earnestness

  879. in his voice

  880. and there was a desire

  881. to see people

  882. come to Christ

  883. isn't that right?

  884. Well let me ask you

  885. the question

  886. if this is a picture

  887. of the apostle Paul's heart

  888. when was the last time

  889. that you shared

  890. the gospel

  891. with someone

  892. with the kind

  893. of passion

  894. and affection

  895. that Christ

  896. shared it with?

  897. When was the last time

  898. you shared it

  899. with the kind of passion

  900. that Paul shared it with?

  901. Let me take another step

  902. and just ask you

  903. a practical question

  904. you may not have had

  905. some opportunities

  906. in the last several weeks

  907. right?

  908. Forcing them

  909. is not a good idea

  910. so when was the last time

  911. you prayed

  912. with that kind of passion

  913. and concern?

  914. Let me give you

  915. a couple illustrations

  916. I was here yesterday

  917. with helping

  918. with the crowd

  919. of people

  920. that were babysitting

  921. and I know

  922. that one of the little

  923. babies in our fellowship

  924. was sick

  925. and the mother

  926. went home

  927. and I happened

  928. to come out

  929. from the nursery

  930. there were plenty

  931. of helpers

  932. and I was also

  933. over in the gym

  934. working in the kitchen

  935. there with Pastor Saul

  936. and Todd

  937. and I'd come out here

  938. and I walked

  939. and I saw three or four

  940. of our mothers

  941. that were just kind

  942. of huddled together

  943. sharing sympathetically

  944. and I just

  945. I was touched

  946. by their affection

  947. together

  948. for this little child

  949. that wasn't feeling well

  950. still not doing

  951. all that well

  952. and so you know what

  953. I began praying for that

  954. and when you care

  955. about something

  956. how often do you pray?

  957. You pray a lot

  958. praying over and over again

  959. for this little child

  960. to get better

  961. through the day

  962. texting him later

  963. how's he doing?

  964. Well

  965. about three times

  966. and then

  967. I get up this morning

  968. to have devotions

  969. in prayer

  970. and there is

  971. a little text

  972. at 1130

  973. by the way

  974. my phone goes

  975. on quiet

  976. so that you don't

  977. I want to sleep

  978. but I fire my phone

  979. up and there's

  980. so somebody else

  981. has got their child

  982. in the hospital

  983. and what do I start

  984. doing?

  985. I start praying

  986. and I'm praying

  987. with earnestness

  988. when a child

  989. is sick

  990. how does a parent

  991. pray?

  992. How does a parent

  993. pray?

  994. You tell me

  995. Lord

  996. if it's your will

  997. you take care of them

  998. it's up to you

  999. I don't care

  1000. right?

  1001. Probably shouldn't have

  1002. had them

  1003. I remember

  1004. when Judith and I

  1005. were relatively

  1006. young parents

  1007. I was teaching

  1008. at a Christian school

  1009. we didn't have

  1010. any insurance

  1011. and our first child

  1012. for some strange

  1013. reason

  1014. had one bout

  1015. with spiking fevers

  1016. after another

  1017. and I can just

  1018. remember

  1019. both of us

  1020. sitting down

  1021. on the floor

  1022. next to her bed

  1023. and just crying out

  1024. to God

  1025. that she would live

  1026. when was the last

  1027. time that you

  1028. when you thought

  1029. about some of the

  1030. people that are

  1031. not going to heaven

  1032. were you struck

  1033. by affection

  1034. and burden?

  1035. It ought to be

  1036. that way

  1037. we come to

  1038. another part

  1039. as we think

  1040. here

  1041. of enjoying

  1042. the scope

  1043. and the

  1044. part that we

  1045. have in the

  1046. mystery of God

  1047. and verse 10

  1048. it says

  1049. so that

  1050. through the

  1051. church

  1052. the manifold

  1053. wisdom

  1054. of God

  1055. might now

  1056. be made

  1057. known

1058. I want to tell you

  1059. there are some

  1060. points here

  1061. that

  1062. earlier in the

  1063. week

  1064. I found

  1065. myself

  1066. wanting to

  1067. preach on

  1068. Thursday

  1069. and I found

  1070. myself

  1071. wanting to

  1072. preach them

  1073. on Friday

  1074. and I found

  1075. myself

  1076. wanting to

  1077. preach them

  1078. on Saturday

  1079. and here it

  1080. is

  1081. okay

  1082. let me tell

  1083. you

  1084. number one

  1085. the body

  1086. of Christ

  1087. is supremely

  1088. important

  1089. to displaying

  1090. his wisdom

  1091. let me

  1092. pick up on

  1093. that first

  1094. part again

  1095. so that

  1096. through

  1097. the

  1098. church

  1099. and ponder

  1100. with me

  1101. just how

  1102. poignant

  1103. and how

  1104. significant

  1105. those words

  1106. are

  1107. when we

  1108. read the

  1109. Bible

  1110. we have a

  1111. tendency

  1112. to read

  1113. the Bible

  1114. in a

  1115. personal

  1116. sense

  1117. isn't that

  1118. right

  1119. I read

  1120. the Bible

  1121. for Tim

  1122. Nellie

  1123. reads the

  1124. Bible

  1125. for Nellie

  1126. and since

  1127. Nellie

  1128. is sitting

  1129. next to

  1130. Olivia

  1131. and Olivia

  1132. is kind

  1133. of giving

  1134. me that

  1135. look

  1136. don't use

  1137. my name

  1138. Olivia

  1139. reads the

  1140. Bible

  1141. for Olivia

  1142. it's just

  1143. the way

  1144. it is

  1145. do you

  1146. follow that

  1147. and that's

  1148. not all

  1149. bad

  1150. but when

  1151. scripture

  1152. was written

  1153. here

  1154. in the

  1155. pastoral

  1156. epistles

  1157. it was

  1158. written

  1159. to be

  1160. read

  1161. to the

  1162. whole

  1163. body

  1164. of Christ

  1165. and they

  1166. understood

  1167. it

  1168. collectively

  1169. I mean

  1170. I am

  1171. very thankful

  1172. that my

  1173. finger

  1174. does not

  1175. think about

  1176. itself

  1177. apart

  1178. from the

  1179. body

  1180. it's

  1181. attached

  1182. together

  1183. it fits

  1184. and here

  1185. is the

  1186. apostle

  1187. penning

  1188. these

  1189. words

  1190. and he

  1191. is saying

  1192. something

  1193. of

  1194. profound

  1195. value

  1196. to us

  1197. he's

  1198. saying

  1199. so that

  1200. in

  1201. the

  1202. church

  1203. through

  1204. the

  1205. church

  1206. many

  1207. of you

  1208. the church

  1209. has a

  1210. place

  1211. to go

  1212. that's

  1213. not

  1214. right

  1215. the

  1216. church

  1217. is

  1218. something

  1219. that

  1220. the

  1221. believer

  1222. is

  1223. to

  1224. belong

  1225. to

  1226. by

  1227. God's

  1228. divine

  1229. appointment

  1230. and

  1231. each

  1232. member

  1233. in the

  1234. body

  1235. of

  1236. Christ

  1237. has

  1238. been

  1239. called

  1240. and

  1241. equipped

  1242. to

  1243. fit

  1244. together

  1245. for

  1246. his

  1247. glory

  1248. and

  1249. I

  1250. got

  1251. to

  1252. tell

  1253. you

  1254. that

  1255. the

  1256. church

  1257. is

  1258. a

  1259. far

  1260. more

  1261. significant

  1262. display

  1263. of his

  1264. wisdom

  1265. than

  1266. creation

  1267. is

  1268. think

  1269. about

  1270. that

  1271. with me

  1272. for a

  1273. moment

  1274. we

  1275. know

  1276. from

  1277. the

  1278. Psalms

  1279. the

  1280. heavens

  1281. declare

  1282. finish

  1283. it

  1284. for

  1285. me

  1286. the

  1287. glory

  1288. of

  1289. God

  1290. but

  1291. I

  1292. want

  1293. to

  1294. tell

  1295. you

  1296. that

  1297. the

  1298. heavens

  1299. and

  1300. all

  1301. of

  1302. creation

  1303. is

  1304. a

  1305. relatively

  1306. insignificant

  1307. challenge

  1308. for the

  1309. wisdom

  1310. of God

  1311. in

  1312. comparison

  1313. to

  1314. redemption

  1315. does that

  1316. make sense

  1317. why is it

  1318. it

  1319. tells us

  1320. in the

  1321. scriptures

  1322. that

  1323. angels

  1324. clapped

  1325. and sung

  1326. for joy

  1327. as they

  1328. watched

  1329. God

  1330. with

  1331. simply

  1332. a

  1333. word

  1334. create

  1335. this

  1336. universe

  1337. it

  1338. tells

  1339. us

  1340. and I

  1341. want

  1342. you

  1343. to

  1344. turn

  1345. over

  1346. to

  1347. the

  1348. passage

  1349. and

  1350. look

  1351. at

  1352. it

  1353. with

  1354. your

  1355. own

  1356. eyes

  1357. it

  1358. tells

  1359. us

  1360. in

  1361. Peter

  1362. chapter

  1363. 1

  1364. verse

  1365. 12

  1366. that

  1367. angels

  1368. when

  1369. they

  1370. think

  1371. about

  1372. us

  1373. who

  1374. are

  1375. redeemed

  1376. it

  1377. says

  1378. they

  1379. kind

  1380. of

  1381. ponder

  1382. this

  1383. and

  1384. they

  1385. want

  1386. to

  1387. peer

  1388. in

  1389. and

  1390. understand

  1391. it

  1392. Peter

  1393. chapter

  1394. 1

  1395. verse

  1396. 12

  1397. it

  1398. was

  1399. revealed

  1400. to them

  1401. that they

  1402. were serving

  1403. not

  1404. themselves

  1405. but you

  1406. in the

  1407. things

  1408. which have

  1409. now been

  1410. announced

  1411. to you

  1412. through

  1413. those

  1414. who

  1415. preach

  1416. the

  1417. good

  1418. news

  1419. to you

  1420. by

  1421. the

  1422. Holy

  1423. Spirit

  1424. sent

  1425. from

  1426. heaven

  1427. things

  1428. into

  1429. which

  1430. the

  1431. angels

  1432. long

  1433. to

  1434. look

  1435. what's

  1436. that

  1437. saying

  1438. angels

  1439. who

  1440. enjoy

  1441. the

  1442. presence

  1443. of

  1444. the

  1445. father

  1446. who

  1447. can

  1448. see

  1449. him

  1450. in

  1451. his

  1452. resplendent

  1453. glory

  1454. who

  1455. enjoy

  1456. the

  1457. benefit

  1458. of

  1459. the

  1460. holiness

  1461. and

  1462. the

  1463. glory

  1464. of

  1465. heaven

  1466. are

  1467. kind

  1468. of

  1469. not

  1470. troubled

  1471. but

  1472. they're

  1473. curious

  1474. they

  1475. want

  1476. to

  1477. understand

  1478. what

  1479. what did

  1480. you do

  1481. God

  1482. when you

  1483. saved

  1484. those

  1485. people

  1486. and by

  1487. the way

  1488. what makes

  1489. angelic

  1490. curiosity

  1491. more

  1492. significant

  1493. is how

  1494. were all

  1495. the angels

  1496. treated

  1497. who decided

  1498. they'd try

  1499. sin number

  1500. one

  1501. what

  1502. happened

  1503. they were

  1504. cursed

  1505. for all

  1506. eternity

  1507. in hell

  1508. and so

  1509. the rest

  1510. of them

  1511. are sitting

  1512. up there

  1513. kind of

  1514. scratching

  1515. their heads

  1516. saying

  1517. I know

  1518. you're

  1519. holy

  1520. I know

  1521. you're

  1522. wise

  1523. I know

  1524. you're

  1525. good

  1526. but

  1527. what

  1528. is

  1529. this

  1530. this

  1531. blessing

  1532. of

  1533. salvation

  1534. and

  1535. beloved

  1536. I want

  1537. you to

  1538. understand

  1539. that the

  1540. scriptures

  1541. declare

  1542. that before

  1543. the foundation

  1544. of the

  1545. world

  1546. he had

  1547. ordained

  1548. the plan

  1549. of salvation

  1550. and he

  1551. had your

  1552. name

  1553. in mind

  1554. I like

  1555. that song

  1556. that says

  1557. he knows

  1558. my name

  1559. right

  1560. it says

  1561. that

  1562. my name

  1563. is engraven

  1564. upon his

  1565. hands

  1566. well

  1567. in Ephesians

    Ephesians 3 chapter mention

  1568. chapter 3

  1569. it says

  1570. that it's

  1571. through the

  1572. church

  1573. that the

  1574. manifold

  1575. wisdom

  1576. of God

  1577. is displayed

  1578. so let's

  1579. talk a little

  1580. bit

  1581. about God's

  1582. wisdom

  1583. Paul

  1584. is writing

  1585. here about

  1586. manifold

  1587. he uses the

  1588. word manifold

  1589. to talk about

  1590. something that

  1591. is just

  1592. everywhere you

  1593. look

  1594. it is just

  1595. incredibly

  1596. wonderful to

  1597. consider

  1598. I'm going to

  1599. oversimplify

  1600. things just

  1601. for a little

  1602. bit

  1603. but how

  1604. many of

  1605. you have

  1606. heard of

  1607. pinhead

  1608. logic

  1609. or wisdom

  1610. or pinhead

  1611. intellect

  1612. how many of

  1613. you understand

  1614. let me use

  1615. an illustration

  1616. so that I'm

  1617. going to

  1618. cast stones

  1619. upon people

  1620. like me

  1621. rather than

  1622. people not

  1623. like me

  1624. literature

  1625. majors

  1626. you know

  1627. I mean

  1628. reading the

  1629. classics

  1630. reading 20

  1631. pages a

  1632. minute

  1633. or whatever

  1634. blah blah

  1635. blah

  1636. it's

  1637. no big

  1638. stretch

  1639. do you

  1640. follow that

  1641. you want

  1642. me to

  1643. read a

  1644. book

  1645. I can

  1646. do that

  1647. you want

  1648. me to

  1649. do a

  1650. math

  1651. problem

  1652. or figure

  1653. out

  1654. something

  1655. engineering

  1656. wise

  1657. it's

  1658. just

  1659. my brain

  1660. goes

  1661. kind

  1662. of

  1663. numb

  1664. okay

  1665. and that's

  1666. what I

  1667. mean by

  1668. pinhead

  1669. wisdom

  1670. or logic

  1671. you know

  1672. you're

  1673. a specialist

  1674. in a

  1675. narrow

  1676. sphere

  1677. narrow

  1678. band

  1679. I see

  1680. some of

  1681. you smiling

  1682. because you

  1683. understand

  1684. what I'm

  1685. saying

  1686. see

  1687. God's

  1688. manifold

  1689. wisdom

  1690. does the

  1691. literature

  1692. and the

  1693. math

  1694. thing

  1695. together

  1696. he gets

  1697. both

  1698. parts

  1699. in fact

  1700. listen

  1701. to me

  1702. he understands

  1703. it better

  1704. than any

  1705. of us

  1706. put together

  1707. he was

  1708. the one

  1709. who invented

  1710. it

  1711. he thought

  1712. it all

  1713. up

  1714. and he

  1715. thought

  1716. it'd be

  1717. entertaining

  1718. for us

  1719. to just

  1720. get it

  1721. a little

  1722. bit

  1723. at a

  1724. time

  1725. and

  1726. and so

  1727. as we

  1728. appreciate

  1729. God's

  1730. wisdom

  1731. let's

  1732. understand

  1733. the

  1734. difference

  1735. between

  1736. wisdom

  1737. and

  1738. knowledge

  1739. because

  1740. it

  1741. helps

  1742. us

  1743. knowledge

  1744. is the

  1745. grasp

  1746. or it

  1747. is the

  1748. it is

  1749. kind of

  1750. the

  1751. gathering

  1752. of

  1753. bits

  1754. of

  1755. information

  1756. knowledge

  1757. allows

  1758. us

  1759. to learn

  1760. the

  1761. alphabet

  1762. knowledge

  1763. allows

  1764. us

  1765. to acquire

  1766. some

  1767. understanding

  1768. of

  1769. phonics

  1770. I'm

  1771. not

  1772. going to

  1773. tell

  1774. all the

  1775. details

  1776. but

  1777. yeah

  1778. I will

  1779. my

  1780. granddaughter

  1781. thought

  1782. that it

  1783. was

  1784. appropriate

  1785. that her

  1786. parents

  1787. give her

  1788. a banana

  1789. and the

  1790. banana

  1791. was not

  1792. arriving

  1793. at the

  1794. adequate

  1795. pace

  1796. and so

  1797. what she

  1798. tried

  1799. was a

  1800. little

  1801. phonics

  1802. na-na

  1803. you know

  1804. I mean

  1805. if you're

  1806. not getting

  1807. it break

  1808. it down

  1809. to make

  1810. it simple

  1811. right

  1812. na-na

  1813. wisdom

  1814. wisdom

  1815. is

  1816. more

  1817. than

  1818. knowledge

  1819. wisdom

  1820. allows

  1821. a person

  1822. who has

  1823. gathered

  1824. the

  1825. alphabet

  1826. and

  1827. understood

  1828. phonics

  1829. to read

  1830. history

  1831. and figure

  1832. out

  1833. I don't

  1834. want to

  1835. do

  1836. that

  1837. how many

  1838. of you

  1839. understand

  1840. the

  1841. difference

  1842. wisdom

  1843. allows

  1844. us

  1845. to take

  1846. the

  1847. data

  1848. of

  1849. life

  1850. and

  1851. make

  1852. good

  1853. judgments

  1854. and

  1855. decisions

  1856. and wisdom

  1857. allows

  1858. the

  1859. believer

  1860. to

  1861. realize

  1862. if I

  1863. do

  1864. this

  1865. I

  1866. please

  1867. Christ

  1868. if I

  1869. do

  1870. that

  1871. I

  1872. harm

  1873. the

  1874. testimony

  1875. of

  1876. Christ

  1877. and

  1878. I

  1879. bring

  1880. heartache

  1881. on

  1882. myself

  1883. and

  1884. others

  1885. I want

  1886. you to

  1887. understand

  1888. that Paul

  1889. speaks of

  1890. the church

  1891. as being

  1892. and follow

  1893. this

  1894. the manifold

  1895. declaration

  1896. of the

  1897. wisdom

  1898. of God

  1899. he says

  1900. that

  1901. God

  1902. intends

  1903. for the

  1904. church

  1905. the

  1906. gathering

  1907. together

  1908. us

  1909. as a

  1910. body

  1911. to be

  1912. something

  1913. that

  1914. causes

  1915. others

  1916. to say

  1917. wow

  1918. what

  1919. did

  1920. you

  1921. do

  1922. how

  1923. did

  1924. that

  1925. happen

  1926. I

  1927. want

  1928. you to

  1929. look at

  1930. one other

  1931. thing

  1932. and

  1933. ponder

  1934. with me

  1935. the

  1936. thought

  1937. behind

  1938. this

  1939. Ephesians

    Ephesians 3:10

  1940. chapter

  1941. 3

  1942. verse

  1943. 10

  1944. it says

  1945. so that

  1946. through the

  1947. church

  1948. the manifold

  1949. wisdom

  1950. of God

  1951. might

  1952. now be

  1953. made

  1954. known

  1955. to the

  1956. rulers

  1957. and

  1958. authorities

  1959. in

  1960. heavenly

  1961. places

  1962. why

  1963. is it

  1964. that

  1965. God

  1966. was

  1967. interested

  1968. in

  1969. demonstrating

  1970. his

  1971. manifold

  1972. wisdom

  1973. in the

  1974. heavenly

  1975. places

  1976. this

  1977. would be

  1978. way

  1979. beyond me

  1980. but I

  1981. think

  1982. it's

  1983. a good

  1984. illustration

  1985. let's

  1986. just

  1987. pretend

  1988. that I

  1989. would

  1990. pull down

  1991. a chalkboard

  1992. here

  1993. and it

  1994. would

  1995. drop

  1996. down

  1997. and

  1998. I

  1999. would

  2000. begin

  2001. writing

  2002. some

  2003. very

  2004. very

  2005. complicated

  2006. mathematical

  2007. equation

  2008. a problem

  2009. and

  2010. then I

  2011. began to

  2012. work through

  2013. that problem

  2014. and I

  2015. came out

  2016. with the

  2017. answer

  2018. at the

  2019. end

  2020. most of

  2021. you

  2022. probably

  2023. wouldn't

  2024. be

  2025. impressed

  2026. do you

  2027. know

  2028. why

  2029. here's

  2030. the answer

  2031. because

  2032. probably

  2033. most of

  2034. you

  2035. are

  2036. marginally

  2037. like

  2038. me

  2039. and

  2040. math

  2041. is

  2042. one

  2043. of

  2044. those

  2045. dark

  2046. skill

  2047. sets

  2048. that

  2049. should

  2050. be

  2051. enjoyed

  2052. by

  2053. other

  2054. people

  2055. do you

  2056. follow

  2057. that

  2058. but if

  2059. the room

  2060. was full

  2061. of

  2062. math

  2063. scholars

  2064. and

  2065. professors

  2066. and the

  2067. finest

  2068. sharpest

  2069. mathematicians

  2070. in the

  2071. world

  2072. and they

  2073. saw me

  2074. pull down

  2075. the chalkboard

  2076. and then

  2077. they saw

  2078. me

  2079. begin

  2080. to

  2081. lay

  2082. out

  2083. this

  2084. just

  2085. incredibly

  2086. complex

  2087. equation

  2088. and then

  2089. they saw

  2090. me

  2091. answer

  2092. it

  2093. they'd

  2094. say

  2095. wow

  2096. that

  2097. was

  2098. good

  2099. see

  2100. the

  2101. angels

  2102. can

  2103. appreciate

  2104. the

  2105. glory

  2106. of

  2107. God's

  2108. wisdom

  2109. because

  2110. they

  2111. are

  2112. not

  2113. as

  2114. handicapped

  2115. by their

  2116. sinfulness

  2117. as we

  2118. are

  2119. and

  2120. they

  2121. look

  2122. at

  2123. the

  2124. marvel

  2125. of

  2126. what

  2127. God

  2128. has

  2129. done

  2130. in

  2131. salvation

  2132. of

  2133. taking

  2134. people

  2135. like

  2136. me

  2137. and

  2138. taking

  2139. people

  2140. like

  2141. you

  2142. and

  2143. drawing

  2144. us

  2145. out

  2146. of

  2147. the

  2148. bankruptcy

  2149. of

  2150. our

  2151. heart

  2152. and

  2153. making

  2154. us

  2155. part

  2156. of

  2157. the

  2158. family

  2159. of

  2160. God

  2161. and

  2162. then

  2163. appointing

  2164. us

  2165. to be

  2166. ambassadors

  2167. for the

  2168. king

  2169. and

  2170. they're

  2171. sitting

  2172. up there

  2173. saying

  2174. wow

  2175. got that

  2176. if the

  2177. church

  2178. is so

  2179. important

  2180. to

  2181. Christ

  2182. and

  2183. the

  2184. church

  2185. declares

  2186. the

  2187. manifold

  2188. wisdom

  2189. of

  2190. God

  2191. what

  2192. has

  2193. happened

  2194. to our

  2195. contemporary

  2196. culture

  2197. church

  2198. that

  2199. the

  2200. church

  2201. has

  2202. been

  2203. marginalized

  2204. in

  2205. the

  2206. lives

  2207. of

  2208. so

  2209. many

  2210. people

  2211. today

  2212. church

  2213. is

  2214. somewhere

  2215. I

  2216. go

  2217. if it

  2218. doesn't

  2219. interfere

  2220. with

  2221. sports

  2222. or with

  2223. my

  2224. personal

  2225. self

  2226. preferences

  2227. or

  2228. my

  2229. vacations

  2230. my

  2231. luxuries

  2232. if the

  2233. church

  2234. is so

  2235. important

  2236. to

  2237. Christ

  2238. the

  2239. thing

  2240. that would

  2241. lead us

  2242. to diminish

  2243. its

  2244. significance

  2245. is that

  2246. we have

  2247. been snared

  2248. by an

  2249. idolatry

  2250. that

  2251. replaces

  2252. the

  2253. glory

  2254. of

  2255. God

  2256. with

  2257. our

  2258. own

  2259. and

  2260. leads

  2261. us

  2262. to

  2263. profound

  2264. dissatisfaction

  2265. and

  2266. spiritual

  2267. emptiness

  2268. and I

  2269. would plead

  2270. with you

  2271. beloved

  2272. this

  2273. morning

  2274. this

  2275. passage

  2276. opens

  2277. up

  2278. and

  2279. helps

  2280. us

  2281. see

  2282. that

  2283. being

  2284. part

  2285. of

  2286. the

  2287. church

  2288. is

  2289. a

  2290. supremely

  2291. wonderful

  2292. blessing

  2293. that

  2294. angels

  2295. kind of

  2296. look at

  2297. and say

  2298. wow

  2299. and you

  2300. ought to

  2301. think that

  2302. way too

  2303. let's

  2304. close in

  2305. prayer

  2306. beloved

  2307. father

  2308. as we

  2309. consider

  2310. the

  2311. glory

  2312. of the

  2313. cross

  2314. and the

  2315. plan of

  2316. salvation

  2317. that you

  2318. have revealed

  2319. to us

  2320. through the

  2321. Lord Jesus

  2322. Christ

  2323. we find

  2324. our joy

  2325. and our

  2326. satisfaction

  2327. today

  2328. as believers

  2329. in saying

  2330. you are

  2331. our savior

  2332. and our

  2333. Lord

  2334. and our

  2335. lives

  2336. belong

  2337. to you

  2338. and we

  2339. do not

  2340. want to

  2341. fall

  2342. into the

  2343. snare

  2344. of idolatry

  2345. that would

  2346. rob us

  2347. of being

  2348. part

  2349. of the

  2350. glory

  2351. and for

  2352. those who

  2353. are here

  2354. today

  2355. that do

  2356. not know

  2357. Christ

  2358. father

  2359. it is

  2360. my

  2361. plea

  2362. it is

  2363. my

  2364. prayer

  2365. that your

  2366. spirit

  2367. would draw

  2368. them to

  2369. the cross

  2370. this morning

  2371. that they

  2372. with humility

  2373. would be

  2374. willing to

  2375. say

  2376. I stand

  2377. justly

  2378. condemned

  2379. before a

  2380. holy God

  2381. and there

  2382. is no

  2383. hope

  2384. for me

  2385. apart

  2386. from what

  2387. Jesus

  2388. did on

  2389. the cross

  2390. of paying

  2391. my debt

  2392. and I

  2393. will gladly

  2394. humble

  2395. myself

  2396. and cast

  2397. myself

  2398. upon the

  2399. mercy of

  2400. Christ

  2401. and ask

  2402. him to

  2403. save me

  2404. we pray

  2405. that in

  2406. your name

  2407. amen

  2408. to

  2409. him

  2410. him

  2411. to

  2412. to
