  1. Let us pray.

  2. Gracious God and Father, for us who know you this morning, prayer is not a routine, but a routine

  3. !

  4. Father, for us who know you this morning, prayer is not a routine, but a routine is not a routine

  5. of the Lord.

  6. And this morning we join in prayer together, asking that just as we have sung your truth,

  7. that we'd also be open to hear the word that informs and instructs our hearts.

  8. That our joy would be full.

  9. That our hearts would have ambition for the things of eternity.

  10. And that, Lord, we would long for the day that the one who we love we would see face to face.

  11. We ask for the power of your Spirit to work in our lives, those of us who are believers,

  12. those who are here that do not know Christ.

  13. That today would be a significant day, one for those who are believers, that our hearts

  14. would be encouraged and strengthened, that we would grow honestly to be more dedicated,

  15. more committed, more resolute, more passionate for the holiness and truth of Christ.

  16. And that those who are here that do not know Christ this morning would have your Spirit convict

  17. them of the misery and the hopelessness of their sin and realize that there is no other remedy

  18. but to call upon the name of the Lord and be saved.

  19. We ask this in your precious name.

  20. Amen.

  21. Well, I'm going to ask that you turn in your Bibles this morning to John chapter 16.

    John 16 chapter mention

  22. And you who are reasonably well-versed in churchiology know that John 16 is not anywhere near the resurrection stories.

  23. And if you were here before breakfast, that is at the 830 hour, you know that we actually

  24. looked at several of those passages where the fact of the resurrection was borne out,

  25. looking at passages in Luke and in Matthew and in Mark and reminding ourselves of the actual

  26. series of events that took place when Christ was raised from the dead.

  27. What I want us to look at this morning is a passage that several weeks ago as I was studying

  28. and actually doing my own devotional life in the morning, I was just struck as I read this,

  29. because it was a reminder of what would someday come.

  30. Now, this is a day when we as believers celebrate perhaps with the greatest amount of affection

  31. and enthusiasm for the victory that Christ has had over sin and death.

  32. Now, we enjoy Christmas, and I admit that, and I know you enjoy it as well, but the resurrection

  33. Sunday is the day that we draw attention most particularly to the victory that we have in the Lord

  34. Jesus Christ.

  35. And so what I'd like you to do is turn with me to the passage in John chapter 16.

    John 16 chapter mention

  36. I'm going to read the passage for you, and then we're going to study it together, and we're going

  37. to ask that the Spirit of God kind of drive these truths home and have a significant difference in

  38. our life.

  39. Let's follow as I read.

  40. You look in your own copy, and I will read from mine.

  41. A little while, and you will see me no longer.

  42. And again, a little while, and you will see me.

  43. So some of his disciples said to one another, what is this that he says to us?

  44. A little while, and you will not see me.

  45. And again, a little while, and you will see me.

  46. And because I'm going to the Father.

  47. So they were saying, what does he mean by a little while?

  48. We do not know what he's talking about.

  49. Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him.

  50. So he said to them, is this what you are asking yourselves that I meant by saying?

  51. What I meant by saying, a little while, and you will not see me.

  52. And again, a little while, and you shall see me.

  53. Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice.

  54. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned to joy.

  55. When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come.

  56. But when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish for joy that a human being has been brought, born into the world.

  57. So also you have sorrow now.

  58. But I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.

  59. Now I want you to think with me just a little bit this morning as we look at this passage.

  60. First of all, kind of recognize the background of what Jesus said.

  61. Here was Jesus speaking a little while before his actual crucifixion, and in that context, he was talking about what would come.

  62. And I think it's important for us to note here that the disciples never really understood what Jesus had to say or what he was teaching about his death before it actually happened.

  63. Now you need to recognize that Jesus, from the very beginning, made the fact of his death, burial, and resurrection something that he was very public about.

  64. It wasn't one of these little closeted secrets that was kept away from everyone else.

  65. It was something that Jesus was very upfront in declaring.

  66. But despite all his teaching and the clarity with which he made these statements, his disciples never really picked up on it.

  67. Now we do see that they were a little nervous and a little uncertain, but they really didn't understand what was going to happen.

  68. Probably one of the better illustrations of just how brain-dead they were on this subject is over in Luke chapter 22.

    Luke 22 chapter mention

  69. And I want you to turn there if you would.

  70. Go in your Bible to Luke chapter 22, and we're going to mark just how much they missed it.

    Luke 22 chapter mention

  71. In Luke chapter 22, we are at the passage where we find the celebration of the Last Supper.

    Luke 22 chapter mention

  72. And we understand that actually what took place is that they thought they were celebrating the traditional, typical Jewish Passover.

  73. And they were kind of looking forward to this, a very important annual event in the life of the nation of Israel.

  74. And they were kind of thinking, well, we're just doing what we normally do.

  75. It's a little bit like for us, it's Thanksgiving on steroids.

  76. For a Jewish individual, it's something that reminds them of God's deliverance from the land of oppression that they've been in.

  77. And so they were thinking about this, and Jesus in that context, remember, he breaks bread and he says,

  78. this is my body which is broken for you.

  79. Now they knew that was not part of the normal Passover meal.

  80. And then he says, and this cup is the cup of the New Testament in my blood.

  81. Whoa, what are you saying?

  82. You would think that would kind of get their attention, wouldn't you?

  83. You would think that would be a good stop and think, what is he talking about?

  84. But the truth of the matter is, is they really didn't connect.

  85. And if you look at Luke chapter 22, verse 24, we see that right after Jesus had taught this lesson,

    Luke 22:24

  86. they're on their way out the garden, and here's what they end up talking about.

  87. A dispute rose among them as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest.

  88. Who are these people that are arguing about who's going to be the greatest?

  89. This is the hand-chosen, selected, the special core, the elite of the future church,

  90. and here they are, they're bickering among one another about who's going to have the first place.

  91. Now it wasn't the first time they'd had this discussion.

  92. Incidentally, we do know from other comparative passages that they thought when Jesus came into the city of Jerusalem

  93. that what was coming next was that the kingdom was going to be established,

  94. Jesus was going to be the king,

  95. and so understandably he was going to need help in managing this kingdom,

  96. and they wanted to be certain of their order and the pecking order.

  97. They wanted to have their place.

  98. They were not thinking at all about the coming crucifixion and what would happen.

  99. And as you look back at our text, go back to John chapter 16, if you will, again.

    John 16 chapter mention

  100. Here he is teaching on the matter of his coming crucifixion,

  101. and we find there that they were a little put off or they were a little uncertain about what was going to happen.

  102. Look at verse 18.

  103. It says,

  104. Now they were talking back and forth,

  105. and one of the problems with talking back and forth when Jesus was around

  106. is that Jesus knew what you were saying.

  107. In fact, he didn't even have to be around to figure out what you were saying.

  108. And anyway, here he is.

  109. They're talking, and they're kind of having this little sidebar conversation,

  110. and Jesus steps right into the middle of it and says,

  111. Hey, what's this that's going on?

  112. What's the problem?

  113. And we find that the disciples, as they were kind of going back and forth on the matter,

  114. they really didn't understand what was taking place.

  115. Now mark what we find here in the passage, and it's going to be the substance of our study.

  116. Jesus tells them right up front what's going to take place.

  117. Christ told them all that they needed to know well in advance.

  118. Look at the passage and mark what it says here.

  119. He says,

  120. And one of the things that I want us to kind of put back in the back of our mind at this moment is this,

  121. is that the truth of the matter is that the Bible, and God's Word in particular,

  122. tells us what we need to know in advance.

  123. It doesn't leave us in the dark.

  124. I appreciate that.

  125. One of the things that goes with advertising is they tell you all the good things up front.

  126. They don't really tell you all the challenges and the probability of things not working out.

  127. Am I right?

  128. The promises are all up front.

  129. The hardship and the difficulty just not out there at all.

  130. And yet God in His Word, He tells us all that we need to know to handle the challenges of life.

  131. And as we look here, we find that God loves His children enough,

  132. and He lets us know what to expect and how the story ends.

  133. And that's what we're looking at here in this passage.

  134. There in verse 20, mark what it says.

  135. It says,

  136. The world will rejoice.

  137. Now stop and think with me what was actually going to take place.

  138. And you turn back in your Bible, and I want you to go there, if you would, just for a moment,

  139. turn back to Luke chapter 23.

    Luke 23 chapter mention

  140. Luke chapter 23, verse 35 and 36.

    Luke 23:35

  141. And we find ourselves in this passage in the middle of the crucifixion process,

  142. and we find that there are some people that are rather happy with what's taking place.

  143. In 35 and 36, here's what we read.

  144. It says,

  145. And so here we have a picture of many of the individuals who were standing around the cross

  146. actually finding pleasure in that suffering Savior.

  147. It was kind of a media event of that ancient world.

  148. And individuals that were crucified provided a certain amount of entertainment,

  149. and particularly those who hated Christ,

  150. took this as an opportunity of throwing their attitude towards Him

  151. and mocking and rejoicing in what was taking place.

  152. Furthermore, you can imagine that when Jesus actually died,

  153. that those who hated Him is like,

  154. Finally, we are finished with this guy.

  155. You remember earlier that as Jesus had gained notoriety,

  156. and I mean he gained respect for the miracles that he'd done

  157. and for the power that he was displaying,

  158. the Jewish leaders thought,

  159. Man, we've got to do something about this guy

  160. before he completely sweeps us all away.

  161. And they decided,

  162. Ah, the thing we're going to do is we're going to put him to death.

  163. Got to figure out a way to get this done.

  164. But they had it all planned out.

  165. They called on Judas to betray Him.

  166. And then they put together this mockery of a trial,

  167. and they led that whole thing,

  168. or they brought that whole thing to the crucifixion of Christ.

  169. And no doubt, as they saw things working right towards that very end,

  170. there in their hearts was a growing sense of accomplishment.

  171. And man, we're finally going to be finished with this.

  172. And this problem, this thorn in our side,

  173. is going to be wiped away and we're done.

  174. They're happy.

  175. They're rejoicing.

  176. And Jesus says to his disciples,

  177. You have to understand that there will be people who will rejoice

  178. seeing my crucifixion come about.

  179. He says also in that passage,

  180. He says,

  181. And you yourselves are going to weep and lament.

  182. And we find that level of sorrow and brokenness on the part of the disciples.

  183. Many of them fled because they were afraid.

  184. They too would pay the price with their own lives.

  185. But there were others that came and watched what took place,

  186. and their hearts were broken by what happened.

  187. I think of the passage over in Luke chapter 24,

    Luke 24 chapter mention

  188. where we find even after three days out,

  189. the day of the actual Christ's resurrection,

  190. we have the story of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus.

  191. And as they were going there,

  192. what were their spirits like?

  193. I have to admit it.

  194. I stayed up and watched the game last night.

  195. And, you know,

  196. and I didn't have my head hung down on the,

  197. I watched one of the players,

  198. you know,

  199. just hands buried,

  200. his head buried in his hands.

  201. I mean,

  202. he was brokenhearted.

  203. And it's just over a game,

  204. right?

  205. I mean,

  206. and here were the disciples.

  207. The one that they loved had been crucified.

  208. Days later,

  209. they just say,

  210. you know,

  211. we had hoped.

  212. And Jesus,

  213. he looks at these guys,

  214. and he says,

  215. what's the problem?

  216. Don't you know?

  217. Jesus was crucified.

  218. And in this passage in John,

  219. as Jesus is speaking ahead of time

  220. and telling his disciples what's going to happen,

  221. he says,

  222. listen,

  223. there's going to be people that are really excited

  224. at my crucifixion,

  225. and you are going to have broken hearts.

  226. I don't want you to miss this point.

  227. At the beginning,

  228. believers may not know every part of the journey

  229. that their life is going to take,

  230. but I want you to recognize

  231. that God graciously tells us enough

  232. of how things are going to play out

  233. that even in the midst of the heartache

  234. and difficulties,

  235. we do well to remember

  236. we know how the story ends.

  237. And I think that's important for us

  238. to look at this morning.

  239. Don't be surprised by troubles.

  240. Don't be overwhelmed by the challenges

  241. and the hardships that you're going to suffer.

  242. I want you to recognize

  243. that life is marked by difficulties

  244. because we live in this broken world.

  245. On top of that,

  246. if we live as believers,

  247. we shouldn't be surprised

  248. by the heartache and challenges that we face.

  249. I remember reading earlier this week

  250. that there was a student in Florida,

  251. and some of you perhaps have tracked that,

  252. that his assignment in his class,

  253. and this is verified,

  254. his assignment in his class

  255. was to take a large piece of paper

  256. and write Jesus on it

  257. and then drop it down on the ground

  258. and stand back and think for a second

  259. and then stomp on that paper.

  260. And when the student rejected that assignment,

  261. he was at first disciplined

  262. by the administration

  263. for refusing to follow through

  264. with that assignment.

  265. I want to tell you something.

  266. I'm very glad that there was enough

  267. of a public outcry

  268. that the university had a second thought

  269. on that fact.

  270. But listen to me carefully.

  271. I believe it's just an early indicator

  272. of where things are going in our culture.

  273. And recognize the fact

  274. that there is going to be the day

  275. where you shouldn't be surprised

  276. if you are persecuted for your faith

  277. because all around the world

  278. there are people today

  279. that suffer for their faith

  280. in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  281. And don't be surprised if it comes here.

  282. I think today of the fact

  283. that Israel is being discredited

  284. at the very time

  285. that the Muslim Brotherhood

  286. has received millions and millions

  287. of dollars from our government.

  288. Don't be surprised at what's coming

  289. with the debate on homosexual marriage.

  290. I am not the least bit surprised

  291. by what is taking place

  292. with the devolution of our culture.

  293. And in the face of all of this

  294. we need to recognize

  295. that there will be hardships

  296. in this life

  297. and we shouldn't be surprised by those.

  298. Troubles will come.

  299. And over in verse 19

  300. it says here

  301. you know you're asking

  302. about all these details

  303. and I want to explain them to you

  304. Jesus says.

  305. Here's what I said

  306. and he wants to explain it to us

  307. so we understand it clearly.

  308. Now I want you to mark

  309. the promise of lasting joy

  310. that we find here.

  311. Yes hardship is going to come.

  312. Difficulty is going to come.

  313. We're going to face

  314. some real trials

  315. but mark what we find

  316. in the passage.

  317. It says there

  318. your sorrow will be turned to joy.

  319. I want you to look at this

  320. and just see what this

  321. must have looked like.

  322. Go back a little bit

  323. to the passage

  324. in Luke chapter 24 verse 17.

    Luke 24:17

  325. Luke chapter 24 verse 17.

    Luke 24:17

  326. And he said to them

  327. what is this conversation

  328. you're holding

  329. with each other

  330. as you walk?

  331. Talking about the two

  332. disciples again.

  333. They were kind of sorrowful

  334. but then what does Jesus say?

  335. Mark the reality

  336. of what is going to come

  337. and that's what flows on

  338. here in the passage

  339. a reminder

  340. that Jesus Christ

  341. indeed

  342. is going to be resurrected

  343. from the dead

  344. and glorious truth

  345. of our salvation.

  346. Now I cannot fully imagine

  347. what the emotions

  348. must have been like

  349. for these disciples

  350. at this point

  351. but if you go back

  352. to that passage

  353. in John chapter 16

    John 16 chapter mention

  354. you have to mark the fact

  355. that they were a little

  356. concerned and uncertain

  357. about what was going

  358. to take place.

  359. They heard what Jesus said

  360. they had trouble

  361. putting it together

  362. and the fact that he said

  363. it over and over again

  364. must have kind of

  365. amplified

  366. their uncertainty

  367. because Jesus was not

  368. the kind of teacher

  369. that said something

  370. just to hear himself talk.

  371. When he made a statement

  372. there was a purpose for it

  373. and he was telling them

  374. yet again

  375. that he was going

  376. to suffer

  377. and there was going

  378. to be hardship

  379. in front.

  380. Now listen to what

  381. Jesus said there

  382. in verse 22

  383. that no one would

  384. take their joy

  385. from them.

  386. John chapter 16

    John 16:22

  387. verse 22

  388. So also you'll have

  389. sorrow now

  390. but I will see you again

  391. and your hearts

  392. will rejoice

  393. and no one

  394. will take

  395. your joy from you.

  396. He was speaking

  397. to the very disciples

  398. that would soon

  399. be overwhelmed

  400. by the certainty

  401. or by watching

  402. Jesus Christ

  403. their Lord

  404. and Savior

  405. be crucified

  406. and it must have

  407. it would be something

  408. that would be

  409. supremely unsettling

  410. because in their minds

  411. what were they expecting

  412. Jesus would do

  413. on the next day

  414. when he came in.

  415. Remember the triumphal entry?

  416. Came into the city

  417. riding how?

  418. Riding on a donkey

  419. in keeping

  420. with Old Testament

  421. prophecy

  422. behold your king

  423. comes unto you

  424. with meekness

  425. riding on a donkey

  426. and they thought

  427. hey this is it

  428. this is our opportunity

  429. the next thing

  430. that we know

  431. is the coronation

  432. of Christ

  433. and all of us

  434. will have our special place

  435. and our setting

  436. will be established

  437. and here he is

  438. speaking to them

  439. and says listen

  440. understand

  441. understand

  442. you're going

  443. to sorrow now

  444. but

  445. I will see you again

  446. and your hearts

  447. will rejoice

  448. and no one

  449. will take that joy

  450. from you

  451. and he was talking

  452. about the fact

  453. that after his crucifixion

  454. would come his resurrection

  455. and they would see

  456. the risen Christ

  457. and their hearts

  458. would revel in that truth

  459. and their hearts

  460. would rest in that truth

  461. and no one

  462. no one at all

  463. would take that joy

  464. from them.

  465. I want you to imagine

  466. just for a moment

  467. how profound

  468. that emotional

  469. a joy must have been

  470. after the third day

  471. and the women

  472. came back

  473. to the disciples

  474. and say

  475. he is risen

  476. how did the adult

  477. male disciples respond?

  478. alright

  479. no

  480. that's not it at all

  481. in fact

  482. you remember

  483. good old Thomas

  484. what did Thomas say?

  485. there are some of us here

  486. that would be

  487. Thomas's on steroids

  488. right

  489. unless I put my finger

  490. in those wounds

  491. I'm not going to believe

  492. and the rest of them

  493. pretty uncertain

  494. as to what was going

  495. to take place

  496. and yet Jesus says

  497. the day is coming

  498. that your joy

  499. is going to be full

  500. and after he revealed

  501. himself to them

  502. we find there

  503. that their hearts

  504. were just unbelievably

  505. lifted up

  506. and rejoicing

  507. you look in John

  508. and it tells us

  509. that when he appeared

  510. to them

  511. it says that their hearts

  512. were just overwhelmed

  513. with that fact

  514. so let's think about

  515. the next thing

  516. that Jesus says there

  517. and you look there

  518. and he says

  519. that your joy

  520. will be full

  521. and no one

  522. will take your sorrow

  523. from you

  524. I want us to think

  525. as we study

  526. the scriptures together

  527. of powerful reasons

  528. for this lasting joy

  529. see our joy

  530. today

  531. is not a joy

  532. just in the fact

  533. of the resurrection

  534. of Christ

  535. but all the other

  536. related facts

  537. that tie into it

  538. and are connected

  539. to that reality

  540. we have lasting joy

  541. because Christ's

  542. resurrection

  543. affirms

  544. the effectiveness

  545. of his sacrificial death

  546. I want you to turn

  547. in your Bible

  548. so you can understand

  549. this passage

  550. see this text

  551. for yourself

  552. in Romans chapter 4

    Romans 4:25

  553. verse 25

  554. Romans chapter 4

    Romans 4:25

  555. verse 25

  556. why do I have

  557. lasting joy

  558. I do not have

  559. lasting joy

  560. because of Tim Knoyer

  561. I do not have

  562. lasting joy

  563. in our economy

  564. I do not have

  565. lasting joy

  566. in the weather

  567. I have lasting joy

  568. in the finished work

  569. of Christ

  570. and the absolute

  571. certainty

  572. I have

  573. that the work

  574. he begun

  575. is accomplished

  576. and settled

  577. in the heavens

  578. Romans chapter 4

    Romans 4:25

  579. verse 25

  580. it says

  581. who was delivered up

  582. for our transgressions

  583. and raised

  584. for our justification

  585. think with me

  586. about that

  587. it says that

  588. Christ

  589. was sacrificed

  590. for our sins

  591. why did Jesus

  592. die on the cross

  593. did he die

  594. because he was

  595. a sinner

  596. no

  597. he died

  598. because I

  599. was a sinner

  600. and you

  601. were a sinner

  602. and he died

  603. in my place

  604. and he satisfied

  605. my debt

  606. and what does it say

  607. he was delivered up

  608. for our trespasses

  609. !

  610. Jesus died

  611. in my place

  612. he died

  613. in your place

  614. and it says

  615. and he was raised up

  616. for our justification

  617. if he had died

  618. and not risen again

  619. would we have

  620. any certainty

  621. that his death

  622. had accomplished

  623. anything

  624. what's the answer?

  625. not at all

  626. not at all

  627. his resurrection

  628. verifies

  629. the fact

  630. of

  631. his sacrifice

  632. for our sins

  633. the debt of my sin

  634. has been satisfied

  635. and the way that I know

  636. it's been satisfied

  637. is Jesus rose

  638. from the dead

  639. and he's made

  640. that fact undeniable

  641. secondly

  642. we have lasting joy

  643. in Christ's resurrection

  644. because it is proof

  645. of the power

  646. that is on tap

  647. for us to change

  648. look in your Bible

  649. if you would

  650. to Ephesians chapter 1

    Ephesians 1:19

  651. verse 19

  652. and then Ephesians

    Ephesians 2:10

  653. chapter 2

  654. verse 10

  655. Ephesians chapter 1

    Ephesians 1:19

  656. verse 19

  657. and Ephesians chapter 2

    Ephesians 2:10

  658. verse 10

  659. what is it

  660. that makes me glad

  661. with a joy

  662. that cannot be taken away

  663. when I stop

  664. and think about

  665. the resurrection

  666. of Christ?

  667. well it is this fact

  668. that his resurrection

  669. power

  670. is available

  671. to not only

  672. bring salvation

  673. to me

  674. and complete forgiveness

  675. for all of my sins

  676. but also to help me change

  677. Ephesians chapter 1

    Ephesians 1:19

  678. verse 19

  679. it says

  680. and what is the

  681. immeasurable greatness

  682. of his power

  683. towards us

  684. who believe

  685. according

  686. to the working

  687. of his great might

  688. how many of you

  689. have ever found yourself

  690. kind of wondering

  691. well is it possible

  692. that I can really change

  693. to be someone different

  694. than who I am?

  695. the fact of the matter

  696. is that Christ saved you

  697. and he has given

  698. to you

  699. the power

  700. of the gospel

  701. and the power

  702. of the spirit of God

  703. so you don't have

  704. to stay the way

  705. you are

  706. and how do I know

  707. that that power

  708. is available to me

  709. and how much power

  710. there is?

  711. well here's what it says

  712. it says

  713. verse 20

  714. that he worked in Christ

  715. when he raised him

  716. from the dead

  717. and seated him

  718. at his right hand

  719. in the heavenly places

  720. what kind of power

  721. does it take

  722. to raise a person

  723. from the dead?

  724. does anybody know?

  725. anybody ever seen

  726. that done?

  727. there are a number

  728. of you here

  729. that are part

  730. of the medical community

  731. and I have no doubt

  732. that you have watched

  733. individuals

  734. go through that process

  735. of finally slipping

  736. into eternity

  737. and when it's over

  738. it's what?

  739. it's over

  740. it's over

  741. there is no coming back

  742. from that point

  743. and here

  744. the scriptures tell us

  745. that the same power

  746. that raised up Christ

  747. from the dead

  748. is available to us

  749. that we do not

  750. have to stay

  751. the way we are

  752. isn't that encouraging?

  753. in the previous

  754. generation

  755. you could walk

  756. into a place

  757. like Borders

  758. or Little Professor

  759. or Barnes and Noble

  760. and there was

  761. this great big section

  762. piled with books

  763. on self-help

  764. right?

  765. how many of you

  766. remember that?

  767. you had to walk

  768. past that

  769. to get to the

  770. religious books

  771. you know

  772. there's shelf

  773. after shelf

  774. after shelf

  775. about how to

  776. improve yourself

  777. how to help yourself

  778. how to make friends

  779. and influence people

  780. blah blah blah

  781. and you wait

  782. two years

  783. and where would they be?

  784. they'd be at the

  785. front of the store

  786. on this little old

  787. table called

  788. discount books

  789. and you could

  790. you could buy them

  791. and wait 20 years

  792. because the same idea

  793. just come back

  794. back around

  795. and cycle through

  796. remember that?

  797. self-help

  798. is what?

  799. it's worthless

  800. but the power

  801. of Christ

  802. at work

  803. in the believer

  804. gives us

  805. certainty

  806. that we

  807. who know Christ

  808. are going to

  809. grow in grace

  810. and be different

  811. by his power

  812. I want you to look

  813. at another thing

  814. that we want to mark here

  815. and mark this fact

  816. that because of the

  817. resurrection

  818. we have confidence

  819. in our own resurrection

  820. and eternal joy

  821. how do I know

  822. what my future is?

  823. in the near term

  824. here's what I know

  825. unless Jesus comes back

  826. Tim Kenoyer

  827. is going to die

  828. can I tell you

  829. that all of you

  830. are going to die?

  831. I mean

  832. have you ever heard

  833. the statement

  834. there are only two things

  835. that are undeniably true

  836. one is death

  837. and the other's taxes

  838. and we know

  839. the day is coming

  840. that we're going to slip

  841. from this place

  842. into eternity

  843. I love the flow

  844. of logic

  845. and I want you to turn

  846. back in your Bible

  847. if you would

  848. to 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention

  849. chapter 15

  850. in 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention

  851. chapter 15

  852. the apostle Paul

  853. wrote to a group

  854. of people

  855. who had kind of

  856. lost their

  857. confidence

  858. and their certainty

  859. in the reality

  860. of the resurrection

  861. resurrection

  862. and he wanted

  863. to remind them

  864. of the truth

  865. of the resurrection

  866. from the dead

  867. by the Lord Jesus Christ

  868. and its application

  869. to us as believers

  870. and so you look there

  871. in 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 15:14

  872. chapter 15

  873. verse 14

  874. and he makes

  875. a statement

  876. that helps you

  877. understand why

  878. this Sunday

  879. of all Sundays

  880. is the most important

  881. to us in our faith

  882. and if Christ

  883. has not been raised

  884. then our preaching

  885. is in vain

  886. and your faith

  887. is in vain

  888. if Jesus did not

  889. come back from the dead

  890. and the tomb

  891. is not empty

  892. then we are here

  893. as actually

  894. the most miserable

  895. of all people

  896. why would I say

  897. the most miserable

  898. for one thing

  899. because Christianity

  900. is not simply

  901. another plan

  902. for how to become

  903. a good person

  904. how many of you

  905. realize that

  906. let me say that

  907. carefully

  908. all kinds of religions

  909. in the world

  910. and I've said this

  911. many many times

  912. there really are only

  913. two different religions

  914. in the world

  915. one religion

  916. poses

  917. that men may

  918. improve themselves

  919. over time

  920. by working hard

  921. and by the way

  922. if you're a Hindu

  923. and you don't get it right

  924. the first time

  925. guess what

  926. you can get it right

  927. the second time

  928. and if you don't get it right

  929. the second time

  930. guess what

  931. you have the third

  932. and the fourth

  933. and the fifth

  934. you just keep working at it

  935. others propose

  936. that well

  937. if we don't get it right

  938. in this life

  939. well we've got

  940. purgatory to pay it off

  941. but eventually

  942. we'll get there

  943. you know what

  944. Christianity says

  945. you can't solve

  946. your problem

  947. God sent his son

  948. the Lord Jesus Christ

  949. to die

  950. in your place

  951. and he

  952. is willing

  953. to save you

  954. from the absolute

  955. hopelessness

  956. of your situation

  957. if you will admit

  958. that you're a sinner

  959. and need Christ

  960. as your savior

  961. and here is

  962. the apostle

  963. writing and saying

  964. listen

  965. if Christ

  966. did not

  967. raise from the dead

  968. we've got no hope

  969. we've got no hope

  970. but then look at

  971. what he says

  972. in verse 20

  973. but in fact

  974. Christ

  975. has been

  976. raised from the dead

  977. the first fruits

  978. of those

  979. who have fallen

  980. asleep

  981. for as by

  982. a man

  983. came death

  984. by a man

  985. has come

  986. also

  987. the resurrection

  988. of the dead

  989. do you know

  990. why we die

  991. we die

  992. because sin

  993. entered the world

  994. when Adam

  995. and Eve

  996. sinned

  997. they brought

  998. upon all

  999. of us

  1000. through their

  1001. federal headship

  1002. the consequences

  1003. of sin

  1004. and beloved

  1005. every one

  1006. of us

  1007. today

  1008. you are

  1009. in the process

  1010. of going

  1011. on that

  1012. journey

  1013. to the grave

  1014. it's a fact

  1015. but here's

  1016. what it says

  1017. just as

  1018. through Adam

  1019. death

  1020. came upon

  1021. all of us

  1022. so also

  1023. in Christ

  1024. Jesus

  1025. the power

  1026. of the resurrection

  1027. and the certainty

  1028. of the resurrection

  1029. is ours

  1030. to hold

  1031. on to

  1032. and to be

  1033. confident

  1034. in

  1035. now look

  1036. at what

  1037. it says

  1038. in verse

  1039. 22

  1040. for as in

  1041. Adam all

  1042. die

  1043. so also

  1044. in Christ

  1045. shall all

  1046. be made

  1047. alive

  1048. but each

  1049. in his

  1050. own order

  1051. Christ

  1052. the first

  1053. fruits

  1054. at his

  1055. coming

  1056. then those

  1057. who belong

  1058. to Christ

  1059. over the years

  1060. as a pastor

  1061. I have buried

  1062. many people

  1063. who over time

  1064. became my

  1065. friends

  1066. and I'll

  1067. tell you

  1068. there is

  1069. a profound

  1070. difference

  1071. between

  1072. doing the

  1073. funeral service

  1074. for someone

  1075. who knows

  1076. Christ

  1077. and someone

  1078. who I have

  1079. no confidence

  1080. of where they

  1081. will spend

  1082. their eternal

  1083. destiny

  1084. and when I

  1085. am at the

  1086. graveside

  1087. at the

  1088. committal

  1089. service

  1090. for those

  1091. who know

  1092. Christ

  1093. I take

  1094. great pleasure

  1095. in the

  1096. absolute

  1097. certainty

  1098. I have

  1099. in the

  1100. resurrection

  1101. of the

  1102. dead

  1103. from

  1104. the grave

  1105. and why

  1106. do I have

  1107. that confidence

  1108. because

  1109. Jesus Christ

  1110. arose

  1111. from the

  1112. dead

  1113. isn't that

  1114. right

  1115. anybody that

  1116. will fire

  1117. us up

  1118. is like

  1119. bring it

  1120. on

  1121. Jesus

  1122. I'm ready

  1123. there's one

  1124. other thing

  1125. I want you

  1126. to think

  1127. about this

  1128. morning

  1129. as you

  1130. think

  1131. about the

  1132. cross

  1133. and you

  1134. think

  1135. about the

  1136. empty

  1137. tomb

  1138. I want

  1139. you to

  1140. go in

  1141. your

  1142. Bible

  1143. to Acts

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  1144. chapter

  1145. 17

  1146. because

  1147. I'll

  1148. tell you

  1149. what

  1150. for those

  1151. of us

  1152. who are

  1153. here today

  1154. and know

  1155. Christ

  1156. the fact

  1157. of the

  1158. resurrection

  1159. and the

  1160. power

  1161. of the

  1162. empty

  1163. tomb

  1164. just

  1165. makes us

  1166. fired up

  1167. and it

  1168. gives us

  1169. ambition

  1170. !

  1171. By the

  1172. way

  1173. it also

  1174. ought to

  1175. give us

  1176. a passion

  1177. for godly

  1178. living

  1179. do you

  1180. understand

  1181. that?

  1182. If Jesus

  1183. rose from

  1184. the dead

  1185. we're going

  1186. to see

  1187. him again

  1188. and if

  1189. we're going

  1190. to see

  1191. him again

  1192. we'd like

  1193. to be

  1194. tuned up

  1195. and ready

  1196. for his

  1197. coming

  1198. would you

  1199. agree with

  1200. that?

  1201. We ought

  1202. to be

  1203. living

  1204. like that

  1205. but I

  1206. want you

  1207. to look

  1208. with me

  1209. at Acts

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  1210. chapter 17

  1211. where the

  1212. apostle

  1213. preaches

  1214. a sermon

  1215. to a bunch

  1216. of people

  1217. that are

  1218. mildly

  1219. entertained

  1220. by the

  1221. concept

  1222. or the

  1223. thought

  1224. of the

  1225. resurrection

  1226. in Acts

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  1227. chapter 17

  1228. we find

  1229. Paul in

  1230. Athens

  1231. and he

  1232. is preaching

  1233. in the

  1234. Agora

  1235. in the

  1236. open

  1237. marketplace

  1238. and as

  1239. he'd come

  1240. into that

  1241. city

  1242. he'd been

  1243. really

  1244. kind of

  1245. fired

  1246. he was

  1247. put off

  1248. to see

  1249. so many

  1250. idols

  1251. they really

  1252. they just

  1253. they bothered

  1254. him

  1255. and he took

  1256. advantage of

  1257. that and he

  1258. ended up

  1259. having this

  1260. opportunity

  1261. to preach

  1262. and the

  1263. sermon

  1264. kind of

  1265. flows

  1266. with this

  1267. nice

  1268. quiet

  1269. dignity

  1270. but it

  1271. really gets

  1272. down to

  1273. the zinger

  1274. and if

  1275. you're

  1276. wondering

  1277. how

  1278. apostolic

  1279. preaching

  1280. or how

  1281. Jesus

  1282. preached

  1283. I want

  1284. you to

  1285. know

  1286. that he

  1287. was not

  1288. one to

  1289. kind of

  1290. dodge

  1291. around

  1292. the

  1293. subject

  1294. and avoid

  1295. making

  1296. people

  1297. upset

  1298. we have

  1299. the idea

  1300. I think

  1301. that Jesus

  1302. is preaching

  1303. was this

  1304. kind of

  1305. you know

  1306. kind of

  1307. warm

  1308. lukewarm

  1309. just kind of

  1310. flowers in your

  1311. hair type of

  1312. deal for my

  1313. age and

  1314. generation

  1315. nothing really

  1316. biting

  1317. but here is

  1318. Jesus

  1319. kind of

  1320. putting it

  1321. on

  1322. and look

  1323. if you

  1324. will

  1325. down there

  1326. to Acts

    Acts 17:30

  1327. chapter 17

  1328. verse 30

  1329. and 31

  1330. the times

  1331. of ignorance

  1332. by the way

  1333. who was he

  1334. addressing

  1335. people who

  1336. did not

  1337. think

  1338. they were

  1339. very

  1340. ignorant

  1341. and he

  1342. says

  1343. the times

  1344. of

  1345. ignorance

  1346. God

  1347. overlooked

  1348. now

  1349. notice

  1350. the

  1351. tense

  1352. when

  1353. did

  1354. God

  1355. overlook

  1356. it

  1357. in the

  1358. past

  1359. but

  1360. now

  1361. he

  1362. commands

  1363. all

  1364. people

  1365. everywhere

  1366. to

  1367. repent

  1368. mark

  1369. what

  1370. follows

  1371. because

  1372. he

  1373. has

  1374. fixed

  1375. a

  1376. day

  1377. on

  1378. which

  1379. he

  1380. will

  1381. judge

  1382. the

  1383. world

  1384. in

  1385. righteousness

  1386. by

  1387. a

  1388. man

  1389. who

  1390. he

  1391. has

  1392. appointed

  1393. and

  1394. of

  1395. this

  1396. he

  1397. has

  1398. given

  1399. assurance

  1400. to

  1401. all

  1402. by

  1403. raising

  1404. him

  1405. from

  1406. the

  1407. dead

  1408. what's

  1409. he

  1410. saying

  1411. the

  1412. day

  1413. is

  1414. coming

  1415. that

  1416. Christ

  1417. Jesus

  1418. himself

  1419. will

  1420. be

  1421. the

  1422. one

  1423. who

  1424. judges

  1425. mankind

  1426. earlier

  1427. this

  1428. morning

  1429. I was

  1430. reading

  1431. I was

  1432. reading

  1433. in

  1434. Revelation

    Revelation 4 chapter mention

  1435. chapter

  1436. 4

  1437. and

  1438. 5

  1439. and

  1440. Revelation

    Revelation 4 chapter mention

  1441. chapter

  1442. 4

  1443. is that

  1444. it is

  1445. just

  1446. I

  1447. tell

  1448. you

  1449. I

  1450. was

  1451. listening

  1452. to

  1453. some

  1454. of

  1455. you

  1456. Revelation

    Revelation 4 chapter mention

  1457. chapter

  1458. 4

  1459. the

  1460. glory

  1461. of

  1462. God

  1463. the

  1464. Father

  1465. and

  1466. Revelation

    Revelation 5 chapter mention

  1467. chapter

  1468. 5

  1469. the

  1470. glory

  1471. of

  1472. God

  1473. the

  1474. Son

  1475. do

  1476. you

  1477. know

  1478. who

  1479. is

  1480. going

  1481. to

  1482. be

  1483. the

  1484. judge

  1485. of

  1486. the

  1487. whole

  1488. earth

  1489. who

  1490. will

  1491. bring

  1492. condemnation

  1493. on

  1494. those

  1495. who

  1496. have

  1497. rejected

  1498. God's

  1499. Son

  1500. as

  1501. their

  1502. Savior

  1503. it

  1504. will

  1505. be

  1506. Christ

  1507. the

  1508. one

  1509. who

  1510. hung

  1511. on

  1512. the

  1513. tree

  1514. and

  1515. bore

  1516. my

  1517. sins

  1518. the

  1519. one

  1520. who

  1521. hung

  1522. on

  1523. the

  1524. tree

  1525. to

  1526. bury

  1527. your

  1528. sins

  1529. if

  1530. you

  1531. reject

  1532. him

  1533. it

  1534. will

  1535. be

  1536. he

  1537. with

  1538. nail

  1539. scarred

  1540. hand

  1541. who

  1542. will

  1543. condemn

  1544. you

  1545. for

  1546. all

  1547. of

  1548. eternity

  1549. for

  1550. refusing

  1551. the

  1552. gracious

  1553. and

  1554. tender

  1555. appeal

  1556. of

  1557. Christ

  1558. to

  1559. your

  1560. soul

  1561. I

  1562. spoke

  1563. of it

  1564. earlier

  1565. this

  1566. morning

  1567. but I

  1568. want to

  1569. touch

  1570. on it

  1571. again

  1572. when

  1573. Jesus

  1574. was in

  1575. the

  1576. garden

  1577. praying

  1578. before

  1579. the

  1580. cross

  1581. do

  1582. you

  1583. know

  1584. what

  1585. he

  1586. was

  1587. doing

  1588. he

  1589. was

  1590. saying

  1591. Lord

  1592. if

  1593. there's

  1594. another

  1595. way

  1596. remember

  1597. what

  1598. it

  1599. says

  1600. in

  1601. the

  1602. text

  1603. if

  1604. it

  1605. be

  1606. possible

  1607. here's

  1608. what

  1609. he

  1610. was

  1611. saying

  1612. if

  1613. there's

  1614. any

  1615. other

  1616. way

  1617. to

  1618. work

  1619. this

  1620. out

  1621. let's

  1622. try

  1623. that

  1624. one

  1625. and

  1626. it

  1627. wasn't

  1628. the

  1629. infinite

  1630. debt

  1631. of

  1632. my

  1633. sin

  1634. against

  1635. the

  1636. infinite

  1637. holiness

  1638. of

  1639. God

  1640. demands

  1641. either

  1642. Tim

  1643. Kenoyer

  1644. spend

  1645. eternity

  1646. paying

  1647. that

  1648. infinite

  1649. debt

  1650. with

  1651. infinite

  1652. suffering

  1653. or

  1654. I

  1655. trust

  1656. in

  1657. the

  1658. infinite

  1659. sacrifice

  1660. of

  1661. Christ

  1662. as

  1663. being

  1664. satisfaction

  1665. for

  1666. all

  1667. of

  1668. my

  1669. sins

  1670. now

  1671. the

  1672. purpose

  1673. of

  1674. preaching

  1675. beloved

  1676. truthfully

  1677. is to

  1678. put you

  1679. on the

  1680. spot

  1681. of

  1682. saying

  1683. yes

  1684. or

  1685. no

  1686. to

  1687. God

  1688. do

  1689. you

  1690. understand

  1691. that

  1692. here's

  1693. the

  1694. truth

  1695. God

  1696. sent

  1697. his

  1698. son

  1699. to

  1700. pay

  1701. the

  1702. penalty

  1703. for

  1704. our

  1705. sins

  1706. because

  1707. God's

  1708. holiness

  1709. cannot

  1710. overlook

  1711. the

  1712. offense

  1713. our

  1714. sins

  1715. are

  1716. against

  1717. him

  1718. and

  1719. God

  1720. in

  1721. his

  1722. perfect

  1723. wisdom

  1724. sacrificed

  1725. his

  1726. only

  1727. begotten

  1728. son

  1729. for

  1730. my

  1731. sins

  1732. and

  1733. for

  1734. your

  1735. sins

  1736. and

  1737. it

  1738. is

  1739. righteous

  1740. it

  1741. is

  1742. true

  1743. and

  1744. it

  1745. is

  1746. imperative

  1747. that

  1748. we

  1749. with

  1750. humility

  1751. confess

  1752. yes

  1753. I

  1754. stand

  1755. condemned

  1756. before

  1757. a

  1758. holy

  1759. God

  1760. and

  1761. I

  1762. believe

  1763. Jesus

  1764. Christ

  1765. died

  1766. for

  1767. my

  1768. sins

  1769. and

  1770. I

  1771. accept

  1772. his

  1773. work

  1774. as

  1775. satisfactory

  1776. and

  1777. finished

  1778. let's

  1779. bow our

  1780. heads

  1781. in

  1782. prayer

  1783. beloved I

  1784. want you

  1785. to think

  1786. with me

  1787. this

  1788. morning

  1789. as

  1790. your

  1791. heads

  1792. are

  1793. bowed

  1794. and

  1795. you

  1796. who

  1797. are

  1798. here

  1799. today

  1800. as

  1801. Christians

  1802. that

  1803. you're

  1804. praying

  1805. and saying

  1806. Lord

  1807. work

  1808. in

  1809. us

  1810. the

  1811. gospel

  1812. is

  1813. glorious

  1814. the

  1815. gospel

  1816. announces

  1817. to

  1818. lost

  1819. mankind

  1820. that

  1821. there

  1822. is

  1823. no

  1824. hope

  1825. apart

  1826. from

  1827. Christ

  1828. and

  1829. the

  1830. gospel

  1831. bids

  1832. you

  1833. this

  1834. morning

  1835. to

  1836. confess

  1837. your

  1838. sins

  1839. where

  1840. you

  1841. are

  1842. and

  1843. call

  1844. upon

  1845. the

  1846. Lord

  1847. Jesus

  1848. Christ

  1849. and

  1850. be

  1851. saved

  1852. it

  1853. is

  1854. profoundly

  1855. simple

  1856. and

  1857. profoundly

  1858. humbling

  1859. God

  1860. you're

  1861. holy

  1862. and I

  1863. understand

  1864. that I

  1865. stand

  1866. condemned

  1867. before you

  1868. as a

  1869. sinner

  1870. but I

  1871. believe

  1872. the record

  1873. of

  1874. scriptures

  1875. that Jesus

  1876. died

  1877. for my

  1878. sins

  1879. and I

  1880. admit

  1881. that I

  1882. stand

  1883. condemned

  1884. and I

  1885. thankfully

  1886. receive the

  1887. finished work

  1888. of Christ

  1889. in my

  1890. place

  1891. and on

  1892. my

  1893. account

  1894. and if

  1895. you're

  1896. here today

  1897. and this

  1898. morning

  1899. the spirit

  1900. of God

  1901. is putting

  1902. that part

  1903. of truth

  1904. on your

  1905. heart

  1906. I would

  1907. encourage

  1908. you to

  1909. not delay

  1910. but to

  1911. respond to

  1912. it in

  1913. faith

  1914. yes I

  1915. need

  1916. Christ

  1917. I need

  1918. salvation

  1919. through

  1920. him

  1921. I'm

  1922. done

  1923. trying to

  1924. do this

  1925. on my

  1926. own

  1927. and this

  1928. morning I

  1929. trust him

  1930. as my

  1931. savior

  1932. if that's

  1933. the fact

  1934. of your

  1935. heart

  1936. I would

  1937. ask that

  1938. you

  1939. humble

  1940. yourself

  1941. just

  1942. quietly

  1943. slip

  1944. your

  1945. hand

  1946. up

  1947. where

  1948. you

  1949. are

  1950. just

  1951. slip

  1952. it

  1953. up

  1954. and say

  1955. pastor

  1956. that's

  1957. me

  1958. I

  1959. need

  1960. Christ

  1961. as

  1962. my

  1963. savior

  1964. I'm

  1965. not

  1966. going to

  1967. put

  1968. this

  1969. off

  1970. if

  1971. you're

  1972. here

  1973. and

  1974. that's

  1975. the

  1976. prayer

  1977. of

  1978. your

  1979. heart

  1980. just

  1981. share

  1982. that

  1983. fact

  1984. with

  1985. me

  1986. father

  1987. God

  1988. we are

  1989. thankful

  1990. for the

  1991. glory

  1992. of the

  1993. cross

  1994. we're

  1995. thankful

  1998. of the

  2001. of

  2002. Christ

  2003. and

  2004. we

  2005. rejoice

  2006. in

  2007. that

  2008. we

  2009. want

  2010. to

  2011. live

  2012. for

  2013. your

  2014. glory

  2015. we

  2016. ask

  2017. this

  2031. stand

  2032. together

  2033. as we

  2034. do

  2035. and

  2036. as we're

  2037. singing

  2038. this song

  2039. if the

  2040. spirit

  2041. of

  2042. God

  2043. lays

  2044. a

  2045. matter

  2046. on

  2047. your

  2048. heart

  2049. that

  2050. you

  2051. need

  2052. to

  2053. care

  2054. for

  2055. might

  2056. be

  2057. calling

  2058. you

  2059. be

  2060. part

  2061. of

  2062. our

  2063. fellowship

  2064. be

  2065. obedient

  2066. to

  2067. the

  2068. Lord

  2069. in

  2070. matter

  2071. of

  2072. baptism

  2073. might

  2074. be

  2075. that

  2076. you

  2077. need

  2078. someone

  2079. to

  2080. review

  2081. the

  2082. issues

  2083. of

  2084. the

  2085. gospel

  2086. with
