  1. I would like you to turn your Bibles to a passage that has colored my thinking this morning.

  2. ! And it is preparation for the text that we'll study together.

  3. So turn in your Bibles, if you would, to 2 Corinthians 2, where the apostle, I'm going to pick up there if I could in verse 12, says,

  4. When I came to Troas to preach the gospel of Christ, even though a door was opened for me in the Lord, my spirit was not at rest because I did not find my brother Titus there.

  5. So I took leave of them and went to Macedonia.

  6. But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere.

  7. For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing.

  8. To one, a fragrance of death to death.

  9. To the other, a fragrance of life to life.

  10. Who is sufficient for these things?

  11. I want you to turn now to Ephesians chapter 3.

    Ephesians 3 chapter mention

  12. There are many truths in the scripture which drive me to the point of wondering about my sufficiency.

  13. In fact, the truth of the matter is, is I don't know when I open the book that I'm not struck by,

  14. who is sufficient for these things?

  15. But I feel a little bit like the boy who's cried wolf so many times that people don't believe him.

  16. You know, if I were to say to you this morning, this is probably one of the best passages in the Bible,

  17. he'd probably just snicker.

  18. Because you've heard it so many times.

  19. I have to confess that I took small comfort.

  20. I remember when I was reading John Boyce and he said that actually, he said,

  21. a pastor should probably feel that way every Sunday.

  22. Because the word is priceless, every word of it.

  23. But having said that, this is one of the best passages.

  24. And I don't say it lightly.

  25. You'll hear me say that again next month and I'll probably say the same thing.

  26. But I tell you, this text is sweet, beyond imagination.

  27. And I would appeal to you, I would plead with you here at the very outset,

  28. I want you to say to yourself, just quietly,

  29. I think I might work at memorizing that.

  30. Would you do that?

  31. Just say it to you.

  32. That is not really binding.

  33. That's not a contractual statement.

  34. But it kind of gets you moving.

  35. It gets you a little bit of motivation.

  36. I think I might work at memorizing that.

  37. Say it to yourself.

  38. Don't let your wife know or your friend know.

  39. But go ahead and just, I think I might memorize it.

  40. Say it.

  41. Say it.

  42. Go ahead.

  43. Just quietly to yourself.

  44. Before the service is over, I'm not going to lead you in saying it publicly

  45. and have the deacons jot down the names of all of you

  46. and say it's a four-week performance bond here.

  47. But this is a wonderful text, and it is at the heart of the rich blessings

  48. that we have in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  49. I can't help but go back and remind myself that so many of the things that I pray for,

  50. and I would imagine that you pray for,

  51. are not of the same quality of the things that Paul is praying for here.

  52. Hey, it's okay to pray for sickness and job and all those kind of things,

  53. but here's Paul in prison in great affliction, and he says,

  54. for this cause, this is why I bow my knee to the Father,

  55. that you would be strengthened with his Spirit in the inner man,

  56. that Christ may dwell in you,

  57. that you might be rooted and grounded,

  58. and that you might be able to comprehend with all the saints

  59. what is the breadth and height and width and depth of the love of Christ,

  60. that you might be filled with all the fullness of God.

  61. So we are in the midst of this prayer

  62. where the apostle is praying for people that he dearly, dearly loves,

  63. and he is praying for the most essential thing that they need.

  64. It's the power of the Spirit in their life,

  65. working in a believer that they might have Christ dwell in them.

  66. So we have some questions that we want to ask ourselves

  67. as we work our way through this passage,

  68. and first of all, we need to recognize what this passage is not talking about.

  69. You look at that statement there in verse 17, it says,

  70. so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith.

  71. And we have to ask ourselves, well, what does that mean?

  72. And we understand the Bible truth that we have been taught

  73. and should have fairly established in our heart

  74. that from the moment of salvation, the believer has what?

  75. Christ in you, the hope of glory.

  76. And so I want to remind you of what we find over in Romans,

  77. and let's turn there just for a moment

  78. to remind ourselves of the truth

  79. that genuine conversion transforms the believer

  80. from being a child of Satan to being a child of God,

  81. and along with that transformation comes the reality

  82. that the believer is indwelt by the Holy Spirit and by Christ.

  83. Look there, if you will, at Romans 8, verse 9 and 10.

    Romans 8:9

  84. You may want to underline it.

  85. You may want to study it later on your leisure,

  86. but look at what it says there.

  87. You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit.

  88. If, in fact, the Spirit of God dwells in you,

  89. anybody who does not have the Spirit of Christ

  90. does not belong to Him.

  91. You've ever bumped into people who say,

  92. well, actually, the Spirit comes in subsequently.

  93. Later time, there's a second work of grace.

  94. There's a time where you have this spiritual kick,

  95. and as a result, you have some dramatic outflow,

  96. and, well, that's proof of the fact that you have the Spirit.

  97. No, here's the truth.

  98. From the moment of our conversion,

  99. the Spirit of God comes and dwells in the believer,

  100. and that is one of the distinct, undeniable blessings of salvation.

  101. Verse 10,

  102. But if Christ is in you,

  103. although the body is dead because of sin,

  104. the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

  105. And so we recognize that this Scripture makes it quite clear

  106. that salvation brings Christ into our life as our Lord and Master.

  107. And that's one of the reasons that we can expect genuine conversion

  108. to result in change.

  109. Our lives begin to change because there's a new life in us,

  110. and there's a new person in control and working in our heart.

  111. And as a result of that, over time,

  112. we begin to see more and more of that change.

  113. I have to tell you, I wish that it all took place instantaneously.

  114. How many would join in saying,

  115. I wish the moment I came to faith,

  116. the whole matter of transformation was settled,

  117. and I had no more problems with my anger or my lust or my covetousness,

  118. my selfishness, my arrogance, whatever.

  119. Wouldn't it be nice if it was all cured immediately?

  120. But it's not.

  121. But oh, what a privilege to know that we who have Christ in us

  122. have the power of the Spirit of God working in us.

  123. And since Christ is in the genuine believer,

  124. we can say that He dwells in every Christian.

  125. So what is Paul talking about here?

  126. Look back, if you will, go to Ephesians again,

  127. and it says,

  128. so that Christ may dwell.

  129. Well, hold it.

  130. I thought He was there already.

  131. He is.

  132. But this is something that Paul wants us to think about carefully,

  133. and he nuances or he kind of uses a word that helps us understand this.

  134. What does dwelling mean?

  135. I want you to recognize there's a difference between a guest and a homeowner.

  136. The Greek word that is used here is a word that is actually talking about

  137. the distinction between the two.

  138. A guest is someone who is welcomed at the door and greeted and told that

  139. you want them to feel as comfortable in your home as possible,

  140. and we will spare no expense or effort to make you feel comfortable.

  141. But let me tell you something.

  142. The guest ought not to be in the fridge drinking milk from the jug.

  143. When my children were growing up,

  144. and I can tell this story safely because the individual's not present,

  145. we often had some of the young people over to the house.

  146. They were involved in various things,

  147. and I'll never forget,

  148. he is now a surgeon practicing somewhere within the 500-mile radius,

  149. so you don't want to think too much about it.

  150. But I remember Judith came to me and said,

  151. what is he doing drinking out of the jug?

  152. What?

  153. I went in and said,

  154. hey, listen, we're glad you're here, but stop.

  155. You know, a guest is treated with courtesy.

  156. But when they're sitting at the dinner table,

  157. it's not their place to suggest the next menu.

  158. Am I right?

  159. I mean, they ought to limit themselves to saying,

  160. man, this is the best meal I've had in a long time

  161. and really appreciate you cooking, blah, blah, blah.

  162. But don't bring up what you'd like to have for breakfast.

  163. And top it all off when the guest needs a toothbrush.

  164. Don't go in my bathroom, run hot water on mine,

  165. and go ahead and use it.

  166. You see, there really is a difference between a guest

  167. and the owner of the home.

  168. And the difference lies to a large degree

  169. on the fact that the owner is the one

  170. who has control and has authority.

  171. And when Paul speaks of Christ dwelling in the believer's life,

  172. he's speaking of Christ having practical control of our life

  173. and being the center of it.

  174. So I want you to think about that with me.

  175. Christ being the one who has control

  176. and directing our life rather than being someone who we...

  177. Well, it's a good thing you're here,

  178. and we're glad you're here, but no.

  179. This word that says that Christ would dwell in your heart

  180. means we consciously and deliberately confess his lordship

  181. and his daily control in all that's taking place.

  182. Let me have you turn to another passage

  183. to maybe add a little bit of understanding,

  184. insight to this matter.

  185. Turn back to Romans 6, verse 11.

    Romans 6:11

  186. Romans 6, verse 11, it says,

    Romans 6:11

  187. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin

  188. and alive to God in Jesus Christ.

  189. Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body

  190. to make you obey its passions.

  191. Paul is talking to the believer,

  192. and he is challenging the believer to live a life

  193. that is no longer under the terrible mastery of sin.

  194. How do we go about doing that?

  195. Not by a mere fact of self-will,

  196. and there's not a one of us here

  197. that on one occasion or another

  198. has not said,

  199. All right, all right, I'm going to stop that.

  200. It's done.

  201. And what happens to our well-intentioned efforts

  202. on our own to deal with sin problems?

  203. How many of you discovered that when you go about

  204. launching on your own just kind of arbitrarily,

  205. I'm going to do that,

  206. we end up often just actually having more problems

  207. than we ever anticipated.

  208. It's not just a matter of self-will.

  209. There's more at work,

  210. or should be more at work,

  211. in the life of the believer

  212. in dealing with indwelling sin.

  213. And so, you see,

  214. what Paul is drawing our attention to

  215. here in this passage

  216. is that sin no longer has authority

  217. in the believer's life.

  218. Prior to conversion,

  219. follow me,

  220. you couldn't help

  221. but sin.

  222. You were a slave

  223. and under the mastery of sin,

  224. and it was just as natural

  225. for you to sin

  226. as it is for a cat

  227. to pounce on a mouse.

  228. It was just hardwired.

  229. Conversion delivered you

  230. from that slavery

  231. and has made it

  232. an ability for you

  233. to say no.

  234. And we find in this passage

  235. that Paul says,

  236. you have to consciously

  237. consider yourself dead to sin.

  238. Now, what does that mean?

  239. To reckon or to count the fact

  240. that sin no longer has the right

  241. to control you,

  242. and you have the liberty of saying,

  243. I'm not going to do that

  244. because I am not under your domination

  245. or your dominion.

  246. The term that we find here,

  247. the term consider,

  248. is a legal or an accounting term,

  249. and it's talking about

  250. reckoning or accounting something

  251. to be true

  252. and then acting accordingly.

  253. And so,

  254. in the passage in Romans,

  255. Paul is saying,

  256. listen,

  257. you have to recognize

  258. the fact that you're no longer

  259. in control of sin

  260. or you're no longer controlled by sin,

  261. and you have the right of saying no,

  262. and so live accordingly.

  263. By the same token,

  264. what we have here

  265. in the Ephesians passage,

  266. and you go back there,

  267. if you will,

  268. with me,

  269. to Ephesians 3,

    Ephesians 3:17

  270. verse 17,

  271. Paul is telling us

  272. that we have to live

  273. according to the fact

  274. of Christ being the one

  275. who is in control of our life.

  276. And the point that he is making

  277. is this,

  278. is that we are to live

  279. as though Christ is most important

  280. and the one whose interests

  281. are in control of our life.

  282. Now, think about that with me

  283. just for a moment.

  284. When we say,

  285. when Paul is praying,

  286. I want you to have the power

  287. of the Spirit of God inside

  288. so that Christ may dwell in your heart,

  289. he is saying,

  290. you need the Spirit's enabling

  291. that Christ might be the one

  292. who actually is supremely important

  293. and the one whose interests

  294. are actually in charge of your life.

  295. It's understandable

  296. why Paul would pray that way,

  297. isn't it?

  298. When you stop and think

  299. about your own life,

  300. you need the Holy Spirit's help.

  301. You need the Holy Spirit's power

  302. so that Christ would dwell within

  303. and so that we might sense him

  304. as being more than an invited guest

  305. in a formal part of our domain.

  306. Let me speak here in practical terms

  307. of what this looks like

  308. a little bit for us.

  309. For one,

  310. when Christ dwells within,

  311. we're persuaded of his personal presence

  312. and his supremacy.

  313. We are persuaded of his personal presence

  314. and his supremacy.

  315. It's amazing how often

  316. we find ourselves living

  317. with kind of an absent sense

  318. of the presence

  319. and the significance of Christ

  320. in our life,

  321. and we all go through that.

  322. We make decisions often,

  323. and we don't think much about,

  324. well, how does this affect Christ?

  325. What does he think about it?

  326. I use a comparison here.

  327. One of the things

  328. that I greatly appreciate

  329. about a husband-wife relationship

  330. is that that oneness means

  331. that when a husband considers something,

  332. guess what else he is considering?

  333. How is this going to affect,

  334. hello, my wife?

  335. I know of one couple

  336. where,

  337. whether it is the husband

  338. or is the wife,

  339. when I have been involved

  340. in asking a question,

  341. would you think about doing such and so?

  342. The first thing out of either of those,

  343. that couple's mouth,

  344. is this,

  345. well, let me talk with my husband,

  346. let me talk with my wife.

  347. Perfect expression of oneness

  348. where, hey,

  349. we're together

  350. and we ought to weigh this

  351. and think about it carefully

  352. in relationship

  353. to how does it affect us.

  354. And so if Christ is dwelling within,

  355. there should be a sense

  356. of his presence

  357. and a sensitivity

  358. to his presence

  359. and a recognition of,

  360. hey, you're here

  361. and I don't want to do that.

  362. Turn over in your Bible

  363. just for a moment

  364. to a classic illustration of that.

  365. 1 Corinthians 6,

    1 Corinthians 6:19

  366. verse 19.

  367. Paul is writing

  368. to the church at Corinth

  369. and he is addressing

  370. in this particular case

  371. the matter of sexual immorality.

  372. And now let me tell you something.

  373. In the city of Corinth,

  374. sexual immorality

  375. was about as rampant

  376. as it is here in our day.

  377. Well, you think it couldn't get

  378. any worse than it is today.

  379. But it was no worse,

  380. no better.

  381. You didn't have the internet

  382. where every time you fired up the thing

  383. to look at MSN or CNN

  384. or whatever else,

  385. you have over on the side

  386. the immediate temptations

  387. that one click

  388. can put you in spiritual trouble.

  389. Am I right or wrong?

  390. One click.

  391. Well, in those days,

  392. prostitution was formalized

  393. as a religious issue.

  394. Now, can you imagine

  395. the culture that gets to the point

  396. that you do spiritual good

  397. by engaging with immorality

  398. with a prostitute?

  399. That's what Corinth was like.

  400. And Paul writes to the church

  401. and he says,

  402. hey, listen,

  403. you back up and think about this.

  404. And so his argument

  405. plays out in these verses,

  406. but it comes to a head here

  407. in verse 19.

  408. Or do you not know

  409. that your body is a temple

  410. of the Holy Spirit within you

  411. whom you have from God?

  412. You're not your own.

  413. Guess who is inside you?

  414. Who?

  415. The Spirit of God.

  416. Christ dwells within me.

  417. And the thought

  418. that Paul is bringing

  419. to the table here is,

  420. what are you thinking about?

  421. How do you think

  422. the Spirit of God feels

  423. when you engage

  424. in looking at that pornography?

  425. I know some individuals

  426. who have said,

  427. well, what I'm going to do

  428. is I'm going to put my computer

  429. in the family room.

  430. That's probably not a bad idea

  431. because in the family room,

  432. you have a higher probability

  433. of somebody walking in

  434. and seeing something

  435. if you're on the wrong place.

  436. But let me tell you something.

  437. There's someone more important

  438. than your children

  439. or your wife

  440. who is always on sight.

  441. Who is that?

  442. It is Christ.

  443. And He's within us.

  444. And when it says,

  445. let Christ dwell within,

  446. it is saying, listen,

  447. recognize that He

  448. who is your Lord and Savior

  449. abides within.

  450. He's there to control.

  451. I want you to recognize also

  452. that when we think about

  453. this matter of Christ within

  454. and His presence

  455. and the sensitivity

  456. of His presence,

  457. I want you to look

  458. at another passage

  459. in which we see this play out.

  460. Turn over in your Bible

  461. to probably one of the more commonly

  462. lifted passages

  463. out of context.

  464. Now, I don't think

  465. it does great harm

  466. in its lifting,

  467. but let me have you look

  468. at Revelation 3, verse 20.

    Revelation 3:20

  469. By the way,

  470. who was Revelation written to?

  471. And the answer is

  472. to churches.

  473. Verse 20 says,

  474. Behold, I stand at the door

  475. and knock.

  476. If any man hears my voice

  477. and opens the door,

  478. I will come in to him

  479. and eat with him

  480. and he with me.

  481. I don't think

  482. there's a problem

  483. using it to encourage people

  484. to trust in the Lord Jesus Christ,

  485. but the predominant focus

  486. of this passage

  487. is written to believers

  488. and saying,

  489. hey, listen,

  490. don't push Christ out.

  491. Don't put Him

  492. on the periphery,

  493. on the margin.

  494. What had happened

  495. in the church there

  496. is that they had

  497. distanced themselves

  498. from Christ

  499. in their carnality

  500. and there Christ

  501. was appealing to them

  502. that the intimacy

  503. of their communion

  504. would not be hindered

  505. and He appeals to them,

  506. hey, open the door,

  507. let me in.

  508. There are some of you

  509. here this morning

  510. that the truth

  511. of the matter is

  512. is you haven't sat down

  513. with Jesus

  514. and had sweet communion

  515. for weeks and months

  516. at a time.

  517. Do you understand

  518. what I'm saying?

  519. The last time

  520. you had devotions

  521. that really meant anything

  522. other than grabbing

  523. a daily bread

  524. and maybe taking a millisecond

  525. to read one of the verses

  526. and then I've done my part,

  527. months have passed.

  528. And Christ is saying,

  529. listen,

  530. we have this relationship.

  531. What's happened?

  532. I'm your Lord and Savior

  533. and here you've pushed me out

  534. and well,

  535. I know I'm too busy, right?

  536. Oh, try that with your wife

  537. and see how long

  538. your relationship endures

  539. with that kind of abuse.

  540. For Christ to dwell within

  541. really means that you are living

  542. with an intimate awareness

  543. of His presence

  544. and His supremacy.

  545. Can I stress that again?

  546. To have Christ dwell within

  547. means that you are living

  548. with an intimate awareness

  549. of His presence

  550. and His supremacy.

  551. There's another thing

  552. that goes with

  553. Christ dwelling within

  554. and that is that we are genuinely

  555. affected by His Word.

  556. We're genuinely affected

  557. by His Word.

  558. His Word is not just a set

  559. of ramblings

  560. of some ancient itinerant

  561. guest lecturer in Palestine.

  562. His Word is our life.

  563. His Word is what we rely upon

  564. for wisdom and counsel.

  565. His Word is what corrects

  566. the carnality of our flesh.

  567. His Word is what brings

  568. His encouragement in adversity.

  569. His Word is what lifts us up

  570. when our heart is struggling.

  571. Oh, does our mind go

  572. to places it shouldn't go?

  573. And the answer is yes,

  574. all the time.

  575. I like the song we were singing.

  576. Prone to wonder,

  577. Lord, I feel it.

  578. Prone to leave the God I love.

  579. Take my heart,

  580. oh, take and seal it.

  581. Do you know how He seals it?

  582. Thy Word is a lamp

  583. into my feet

  584. and a light always.

  585. Beloved,

  586. if we are going to have

  587. Christ dwell within,

  588. there has to be something

  589. happening with His Word

  590. in our heart

  591. that makes His Word

  592. of more significance

  593. than something peripheral

  594. that we look at

  595. on a very occasional basis.

  596. turn over in your Bible,

  597. if you would,

  598. to Colossians.

  599. We're in Philippians.

  600. Well, we went to Revelation,

  601. but just go to Colossians 3,

    Colossians 3:16

  602. verse 16.

  603. Colossians 3, verse 16,

    Colossians 3:16

  604. it says this,

  605. let the Word of Christ

  606. dwell in you richly,

  607. teaching and admonishing

  608. one another in all wisdom,

  609. singing psalms and hymns

  610. and spiritual songs

  611. with thankfulness

  612. in your hearts to God.

  613. Let me have you think with me

  614. just for a moment

  615. about that little statement there.

  616. Let the Word of Christ

  617. dwell in you richly.

  618. That's saying that

  619. Christ's Word

  620. is the occupying force

  621. in your life.

  622. and that Christ's Word

  623. is the thing that dominates

  624. and affects your thinking.

  625. It governs where you look.

  626. It governs how you respond

  627. when you're put out.

  628. It deals with the attitudes

  629. of your heart

  630. within the inner man.

  631. How many of you realize

  632. that Shakespeare had it right,

  633. that one may smile and smile

  634. and still be a villain?

  635. And we are all fairly good

  636. at smiling and smiling

  637. and being pretty villainous

  638. sometimes in our own thought life.

  639. Am I right or wrong?

  640. But beloved,

  641. when Christ's Word

  642. dwells within with richness,

  643. it ends up dealing

  644. with those errant,

  645. aberrant thoughts quickly.

  646. I like that.

  647. I desperately need it.

  648. Do you understand that?

  649. my mind will go left of center

  650. quicker than I can imagine.

  651. But as I grow in the Lord

  652. and as more and more

  653. Scripture begins

  654. to possess my heart,

  655. then the Word of God

  656. dwells in me richly

  657. and begins to capture

  658. those imaginations

  659. and bring them into captivity

  660. to the supremacy of Christ.

  661. Do you understand that?

  662. Paul says,

  663. this is my prayer.

  664. This is the thing

  665. I'm praying to the Father for,

  666. that the Spirit would

  667. strengthen you

  668. in the inner man,

  669. that Christ may dwell

  670. in your heart

  671. by faith.

  672. There's another piece in this

  673. that I want you to think about.

  674. when Christ is dwelling

  675. in our heart,

  676. it ends up

  677. that we grow in our love.

  678. That we grow in our love.

  679. We, by nature,

  680. are fairly adept.

  681. We're good at loving one person.

  682. Guess who that is?

  683. Who is it?

  684. I saw him in the mirror

  685. this morning.

  686. He recognized

  687. that his hair

  688. was in trouble

  689. and so he actually

  690. stooped to using spray

  691. to hold it.

  692. There are fewer and fewer

  693. pieces to keep in place

  694. and spray as more

  695. and more desperate.

  696. I looked at him.

  697. I said,

  698. dude,

  699. what happened

  700. to all that stuff?

  701. That's who I love normally.

  702. But when the Spirit of God

  703. is at work in my heart,

  704. there's something

  705. that begins to happen

  706. in terms of my relationship

  707. with Christ

  708. and with others.

  709. Look over,

  710. if you would,

  711. to John chapter 17.

    John 17 chapter mention

  712. Oh, by the way,

  713. let me throw this out.

  714. This is a sidebar.

  715. Do you know what a sidebar is?

  716. It's a little discussion

  717. on the side.

  718. I am praying

  719. about preaching on John.

  720. I've started reading

  721. through John

  722. again and again

  723. and that's usually a hint

  724. that's where I'm going.

  725. I'm thinking about it.

  726. But, oh,

  727. what a book.

  728. I think it would be

  729. my magnum opus.

  730. By the way,

  731. I didn't write it,

  732. so if you're wondering

  733. what I mean,

  734. I have to go

  735. to Charlotte's Web.

  736. Here we go.

  737. I'm sorry.

  738. John 17,

    John 17:23

  739. verse 23,

  740. here we are.

  741. I in them

  742. and they in me,

  743. that they may become

  744. perfectly one

  745. so that the world

  746. may know

  747. that you sent me

  748. and love them

  749. even as you love me.

  750. That the world

  751. may know

  752. that you sent me

  753. and love them

  754. even as you love me.

  755. may be one,

  756. may be with me

  757. where I am

  758. to see my glory

  759. that you have given me

  760. because you love me

  761. before the foundation

  762. of the world.

  763. Then in verse 26,

  764. it says,

  765. I made known to them

  766. your name

  767. and I will continue

  768. to make it known

  769. that the love

  770. with which you have loved me

  771. may be in them

  772. and I in them.

  773. can I tell you something

  774. about longevity

  775. and ministry?

  776. One of the undeniable

  777. things you learn

  778. when you stay around

  779. for a while

  780. is that

  781. people

  782. require

  783. loving.

  784. And

  785. one of the things

  786. I've learned

  787. is that

  788. at the end of the day

  789. you're better served

  790. to love those

  791. who God has

  792. in front of you

  793. rather than wishing

  794. that God would bring

  795. someone else.

  796. because when someone

  797. leaves,

  798. guess what?

  799. The someone else

  800. who shows up

  801. is still just as much

  802. of a person to love

  803. as the person who left.

  804. So it's best to love

  805. the ones God gives you

  806. and stay with it

  807. and work at it.

  808. And can I tell you

  809. a little secret?

  810. If marriage is

  811. two sinners in a canoe,

  812. then church is

  813. lots of sinners

  814. in a bigger canoe.

  815. And the more

  816. we get to know

  817. each other,

  818. which is God's plan

  819. in relationship,

  820. I want you to understand

  821. that,

  822. the more conscious

  823. and intentional

  824. must our

  825. commitment

  826. to love

  827. become.

  828. It's easier

  829. just to kind of

  830. walk in,

  831. sit somewhere

  832. towards the back,

  833. kind of listen

  834. to the music,

  835. walk out.

  836. That doesn't take

  837. much love.

  838. For anybody.

  839. But buddy,

  840. when you anchor in

  841. and you become

  842. invested

  843. and you become

  844. involved

  845. and you become

  846. spent for the

  847. testimony of Christ

  848. and ministry,

  849. you're going to find

  850. that the people

  851. you're working with

  852. are just downright

  853. squirrely.

  854. And you need

  855. the grace of God.

  856. They think that of you

  857. too, by the way,

  858. just in case you're

  859. wondering.

  860. And you're going to

  861. need to have

  862. Christ dwelling in you

  863. or it's not going

  864. to work.

  865. Can I say that again?

  866. You're going to need

  867. Christ dwelling in you

  868. or it's not going

  869. to work.

  870. And when you decide

  871. you're going to

  872. pack off and move

  873. to another place,

  874. the same kind of

  875. people live there

  876. as lived here.

  877. I'll never forget

  878. moving from

  879. a small rural

  880. church in

  881. northeastern Ohio.

  882. Ohio.

  883. And I remember

  884. actually moving

  885. from Columbus.

  886. I was a member

  887. here at Maranatha

  888. and I remember

  889. going up there

  890. to northeastern Ohio

  891. and thinking,

  892. you know,

  893. this is a little

  894. rural community

  895. and I'm going

  896. to imagine that

  897. sin is not on

  898. steroids out here

  899. in the middle

  900. of nowhere.

  901. I'd been there

  902. about three or four

  903. months and one

  904. dear lady decided

  905. that she'd had

  906. enough of her

  907. husband's pornography

  908. and she snuck up

  909. behind him and

  910. blew his brains

  911. out with a revolver.

  912. I could just go

  913. on and tell you

  914. one thing after

  915. another and I

  916. thought,

  917. whoa.

  918. And then I came

  919. to Columbus and

  920. guess what?

  921. Nobody's here

  922. shot anybody so

  923. I'm going to have

  924. the real thing

  925. for that.

  926. And don't think

  927. I'm suggesting it.

  928. But you know

  929. what?

  930. People are people.

  931. How many of you

  932. figured that one

  933. out?

  934. And we need

  935. the ministry of

  936. the Spirit of God

  937. within us

  938. that we would

  939. love each other

  940. the way Christ

  941. wants us to

  942. love each other.

  943. It takes His

  944. work in us.

  945. And finally,

  946. what part do we

  947. have to play in

  948. all of this?

  949. I want you to

  950. think.

  951. Is Christ

  952. really, and

  953. this is a

  954. profoundly

  955. significant

  956. question,

  957. to you who

  958. are believers

  959. it ought to be

  960. one that you

  961. engage in

  962. considering

  963. periodically.

  964. has your love

  965. gone cold?

  966. Can it do that?

  967. And what's the

  968. answer?

  969. Oh yeah.

  970. Oh yeah.

  971. But how

  972. significant

  973. is Christ

  974. to you

  975. in a

  976. personal

  977. and very

  978. real

  979. sense?

  980. Oh, I'm not

  981. talking about the

  982. fact you show up.

  983. I'm not

  984. talking about the

  985. fact that you

  986. may participate.

  987. I'm talking about

  988. the fact that

  989. within the

  990. inner man,

  991. how

  992. significant

  993. is the

  994. sweetness of

  995. your relationship

  996. with Christ?

  997. So what do you

  998. do?

  999. Number one,

  1000. you pray.

  1001. here's Paul

  1002. in Ephesians

    Ephesians 3:14

  1003. chapter 3

  1004. verse 14,

  1005. for this

  1006. cause I

  1007. bow

  1008. the knee.

  1009. And if

  1010. Paul prayed

  1011. for the

  1012. power of

  1013. the Spirit

  1014. of God

  1015. to work

  1016. in the

  1017. inner man

  1018. so that

  1019. Christ could

  1020. dwell in

  1021. the hearts

  1022. of believers

  1023. that he

  1024. loved,

  1025. it makes

  1026. sense for

  1027. you and

  1028. me to be

  1029. conscious

  1030. and deliberate

  1031. and persistent

  1032. in praying

  1033. about that

  1034. thing taking

  1035. place in our

  1036. life and

  1037. if you ask

  1038. yourself the

  1039. question this

  1040. morning,

  1041. so how am I

  1042. in love with

  1043. Jesus and is

  1044. my heart

  1045. affected by

  1046. his glory and

  1047. am I interested

  1048. in his person

  1049. and do I sense

  1050. his presence and

  1051. the answer comes

  1052. back,

  1053. I'm a little

  1054. cold,

  1055. then I would

  1056. plead with you

  1057. to get down on

  1058. your knee and

  1059. say Christ,

  1060. it's not to be

  1061. this way.

  1062. And I want you

  1063. to do,

  1064. here's the catch,

  1065. are you listening?

  1066. I want you to

  1067. do whatever you

  1068. think is best.

  1069. but get me

  1070. back to where

  1071. I need to

  1072. be.

  1073. Secondly,

  1074. I would

  1075. encourage you

  1076. to have

  1077. something to

  1078. do with

  1079. the right

  1080. perspective

  1081. and let

  1082. me just

  1083. recite a

  1084. passage in

  1085. Colossians

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  1086. chapter 3,

  1087. just reference

  1088. it very

  1089. quickly here,

  1090. but in

  1091. Colossians

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  1092. chapter 3,

  1093. it says,

  1094. if then you

  1095. be risen

  1096. with Christ,

  1097. can anybody

  1098. finish it

  1099. off for

  1100. me?

  1101. Set your

  1102. affections on

  1103. things which

  1104. are above.

  1105. love.

  1106. I am

  1107. struck by

  1108. an unbelieving

  1109. world.

  1110. Judith and I

  1111. are, my

  1112. honey is

  1113. actually going

  1114. to run a

  1115. 5K.

  1116. I'm going to

  1117. be in a

  1118. deacon's

  1119. meeting,

  1120. so I

  1121. understand

  1122. that.

  1123. But she

  1124. says she's

  1125. going to

  1126. walk some

  1127. and run

  1128. some.

  1129. But we're

  1130. going all

  1131. around these

  1132. different parks,

  1133. and I've got to

  1134. tell you,

  1135. I am struck

  1136. by how

  1137. addicted our

  1138. culture is to

  1139. athletics.

  1140. I see

  1141. believers who

  1142. are at the

  1143. altar too.

  1144. Beloved,

  1145. set your

  1146. affections on

  1147. things that

  1148. are above

  1149. where Christ

  1150. dwells.

  1151. Third,

  1152. persistence.

  1153. Persistence.

  1154. Prayer,

  1155. perspective,

  1156. and persistence.

  1157. Can I tell you

  1158. something?

  1159. Something that is

  1160. really important

  1161. to you, you

  1162. will ask for

  1163. again and

  1164. again and

  1165. again and

  1166. again and

  1167. again.

  1168. Isn't that

  1169. right?

  1170. If it's

  1171. important, we

  1172. will ask until

  1173. we wear out

  1174. the ear of

  1175. God.

  1176. Christ will

  1177. not dwell

  1178. comfortably in

  1179. the heart of

  1180. the believer that

  1181. can't find time

  1182. for communion and

  1183. prayer.

  1184. Christ will

  1185. not have much

  1186. influence in the

  1187. life that is

  1188. consumed by the

  1189. world and the

  1190. affections of this

  1191. world and things

  1192. that distract the

  1193. heart from the

  1194. things of God.

  1195. You ask yourself,

  1196. when was the last

  1197. time that I

  1198. honestly found

  1199. pleasure?

  1200. I'm talking about

  1201. pleasure in your

  1202. quiet time with the

  1203. Lord.

  1204. That's an indicator of

  1205. where your heart

  1206. really is at.

  1207. Do you understand

  1208. that?

  1209. I've said it so

  1210. many times that I

  1211. know it's redundant

1212. but I get up way

  1213. before my wife does,

  1214. daughter does.

  1215. My wife, I have a

  1216. wonderful time with

1217. the Lord but I also

  1218. like Judith and I

  1219. have all kinds of

  1220. little ways to make

1221. her want to get out

  1222. of bed.

1223. Do you know why I do

  1224. those things?

  1225. I like her.

  1226. I want her around.

  1227. And I don't mind

  1228. jacking up the

  1229. thermometer and

  1230. temperature to kind

  1231. of make the heater

  1232. go off and she's

  1233. sitting in there

  1234. sweating in bed and

  1235. she thinks, well,

  1236. okay, it's the hint.

  1237. And I drop the

  1238. blinds, you know,

  1239. because suddenly

  1240. light, that's the

  1241. thing I like about

  1242. the summertime,

  1243. you know, that it

  1244. gets lighter earlier.

  1245. It's harder to sleep

  1246. in.

  1247. You know, she,

  1248. make the room dark.

  1249. I said, no, the

  1250. room is light, you

  1251. know.

  1252. But it's because,

  1253. so, beloved, where's

  1254. your relationship

  1255. with Christ?

  1256. When was the last

  1257. time?

  1258. When was the last

  1259. time that you found

  1260. satisfaction in your

  1261. time with the living

  1262. God and Savior of

  1263. your life?

  1264. He does not deserve

  1265. to be treated with

  1266. just kind of some

  1267. functional duty that

  1268. you obligate yourself

  1269. to accomplish and

  1270. then move quickly on

  1271. because there are

  1272. other important

  1273. things to do.

  1274. persist in

  1275. pleading,

  1276. persist in

  1277. reading,

  1278. persist in

  1279. pursuing.

  1280. And you know

  1281. what?

  1282. Christ will dwell

  1283. in you,

  1284. in the inner man,

  1285. and satisfy you

  1286. far more than

  1287. any other

  1288. thing or

  1289. person in

  1290. this life.

  1291. Let's pray.

  1292. Without

  1293. anybody looking

  1294. around this

  1295. morning, I want

  1296. to ask you a

  1297. quiet question that

  1298. you think about in

  1299. your own heart.

  1300. where is your

  1301. love for Christ?

  1302. Is he of

  1303. preeminence?

  1304. Does he dwell as

  1305. the supreme and

  1306. significant one in

  1307. your heart and life?

1308. Or is your heart and

  1309. the ambitions of your

  1310. soul consumed with

  1311. every other thing?

  1312. I would plead with

  1313. you this morning if

1314. the Spirit of God is

  1315. convicting you that

  1316. you quietly attend to

  1317. that where you sit.

1318. And if it would be of

1319. help to you, I would

  1320. encourage you to raise

  1321. your hand and say,

  1322. Pastor, that's me.

1323. I need to rededicate my

  1324. heart to pursuing

  1325. Christ and having him

  1326. dwell within.

1327. And I put myself on

  1328. notice, yes, this

  1329. morning, yes, yes.

1330. I want Christ to have

  1331. first place.

  1332. Yes.

  1333. Anybody else?

  1334. Anybody else?

  1335. If you're here this

1336. morning and you do not

  1337. know Christ as your

  1338. personal Savior, yes,

  1339. yes.

1340. I would plead with you

1341. that this morning is the

1342. day to repent of your

1343. sins and trust in the

1344. living God who sent his

1345. son, Jesus Christ, to be

  1346. your Savior.

1347. And if that's the need

1348. of your heart, you need

  1349. salvation this morning,

1350. would you slip your hand

1351. up where you are and

1352. just say, I need Jesus

1353. as my Savior and put your

  1354. hand back down.

  1355. Father, you know our

  1356. hearts.

  1357. You know our needs.

1358. Do not let our arrogance

  1359. and our pride interfere

  1360. this morning with the

  1361. sweet blessing that comes

  1362. with humility.

  1363. rekindle our affections

  1364. for Christ.

1365. We ask it in your

  1366. precious name.

  1367. Amen.

  1368. Amen.

  1369. Thank you.
