  1. Thank you.

  2. Thank you.

  3. Thank you.

  4. Thank you.

  5. This morning to pray for me because I'm reminded of what it says in 2 Corinthians where Paul, he says,

  6. we have this treasure in earthen vessels that the glory may be of God and not of us.

  7. And then later, Paul says a very interesting thing in relationship. He says, we are the aroma of life and death.

  8. To those who are believing, we are the aroma of life. And to those who are dying, we are the aroma of death.

  9. And then he says something. He says, and who is sufficient for these things?

  10. I want you to turn your Bibles to Ephesians chapter 3.

    Ephesians 3 chapter mention

  11. And we are in the process of looking at the prayer that Paul prays from Ephesians chapter 3 verse 14 through 21.

    Ephesians 3:14–21

  12. I think it is perhaps if I were to choose one sermon that I could preach, I would have to decide in advance who was I preaching to.

  13. If I were preaching to unbelievers, I would tell you that I would probably preach John 3.16.

  14. If I only had one opportunity, it would be to preach John 3.16.

  15. If I had one sermon to do for those who were believers, I would want to go to Ephesians chapter 3 verse 14 through 21.

    Ephesians 3:14–21

  16. I cannot think of a richer, more precious, more valuable, more significant passage of Scripture.

  17. Now, given that pastors speak in hyperbole, bear with me, because all Scripture, what does it say?

  18. Is profitable that the man of God may be completely furnished unto all good works.

  19. And so, it's a hard thing to be able to say, and I confess it, that this is the one significant passage.

  20. I don't mean to say that, but it is so rich to us.

  21. Earlier this week, I was reading a book called To Tell the Truth by Will Metzger.

  22. And it's a good book.

  23. I wouldn't call it easy reading.

  24. But Will was talking about the fact that he had been invited to go to a group, a college group,

  25. and a large gathering of young people.

  26. And at the very beginning of his series, and he was actually preaching at a retreat for a number of sessions.

  27. And so, to start things off, he asked the question,

  28. So, how many of you here this morning have confidence in your eternal destiny?

  29. Now, we use that kind of question in evangelism, don't we?

  30. If you were to die tonight, and God were to say,

  31. Why should I let you into heaven?

  32. What would you say?

  33. We use something on the same flavor.

  34. And he was amazed when, after he asked that question about how many of you have confidence in your eternal destiny,

  35. all of those young people, it was a Christian gathering,

  36. all of those young people raised their hands and said,

  37. I've got confidence.

  38. Well, then he asked a subsequent question.

  39. He said,

  40. And so, do you know what he did?

  41. Beloved,

  42. conversion that is genuine,

  43. produces in us a growing affection for Christ,

  44. and a desire to grow in godliness.

  45. And where those two elements are deficient,

  46. there is either a good cause for questioning an individual's birth certificate,

  47. or there is good cause to question where in the process of spiritual growth is that believer.

  48. I speak to you this morning as people who know Christ.

  49. I make that assumption,

  50. though I would believe there are some that are among us today that may have grown up in a Christian home.

  51. You know all the vocabulary.

  52. You got through Awana.

  53. You know the verses.

  54. You probably got a Timothy award.

  55. But the truth of the matter is,

  56. is that there is no affection for the Lord Jesus Christ,

  57. or even a sense of the importance of growing in that.

  58. And there's a large indifference to the matter of obedience.

  59. You may not be saved.

  60. Or this morning's message has direct application to your heart,

  61. and it would be my plea and my prayer

  62. that the Word of God would affect you,

  63. and lead to change that is worthy.

  64. Let me read the passage that we're going to be looking at there in verse 18 and 19.

  65. Here is Paul.

  66. Remember he says in verse 14,

  67. For this cause I bow my knees.

  68. He says, I'm going to pray.

  69. This is what I'm going to pray for.

  70. Works his way through.

  71. And then in verse 18 and 19,

  72. we actually come to the substance of what he is praying for.

  73. And he says this.

  74. He says that you may have strength to comprehend with all the saints

  75. what is the breadth and length and height and depth,

  76. and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge.

  77. So let me begin by recognizing here that what we find in Paul's text is,

  78. first of all, that it's important to have a purpose for prayer.

  79. And when people pray, we do for a reason.

  80. Listen, there's something we need.

  81. There's something that is on our heart.

  82. Often when I am in ministry,

  83. one of the things that I remind myself of what it says in James chapter 1,

    James 1 chapter mention

  84. it says,

  85. If any man lack what?

  86. Wisdom, let him ask of God.

  87. And later on in James, it says,

  88. You have not because you asked not.

  89. And so we recognize that when we pray,

  90. our prayers reflect what we believe is supremely important

  91. or important to us at the moment.

  92. And so there are times when in our prayer life,

  93. we are just crying out and asking God for things that are a burden to our soul.

  94. Other times we're just expressive and thankful.

  95. And let me tell you that I think there is Bible illustration in the fact

  96. that the starting place for most of our prayers in our relationship should be with,

  97. Lord, I cannot tell you how thankful I am that you are my God and Savior

  98. and that I, by your grace, have come into relationship with you.

  99. And I am abundantly blessed.

  100. I have more than I deserve.

  101. And so as we look here at Paul's prayer,

  102. we find that here is the apostle asking for what he believes

  103. is absolutely most essential in the lives of those that he dearly loves.

  104. His goal, in this case,

  105. is for the believer to grasp the love of Christ

  106. and to be filled with all the fullness of God.

  107. And I made the statement last week that over and over again in pastoral ministry,

  108. I found myself in various times comforting those who have been afflicted

  109. or encouraging those who have been oppressed by the heartaches of life,

  110. dealing with discouragement and despair,

  111. brokenness, and at the heart of what I have often found myself desperately wishing I could do,

  112. is I could put a pill in front of them and say,

  113. take this, it will solve your problem.

  114. We are a culture that depends very heavily on pills.

  115. And so I would love to have a capsule that said,

  116. love of Christ, take two, see me in the morning.

  117. You know, it would work.

  118. And Paul is praying and he says,

  119. listen, I want these people that I love to grasp the love of Christ

  120. and be filled with all the fullness of God.

  121. I want us to recognize that here he is praying to grasp a profound thing.

  122. As we unfold our text this morning,

  123. we're going to see that Paul's prayer comes down to a request

  124. that each believer would be able to comprehend

  125. the richness of the love of Christ.

  126. And so there are several things that draw our attention as we think about this.

  127. And I want you to kind of put your mind into gear and follow along with me here.

  128. For one thing, comprehending the love of Christ,

  129. and that's what Paul is interested in,

  130. involves more than just reciting a few verses from a children's song.

  131. Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible told me so, right?

  132. And we've got that one down.

  133. Or Jesus loves the little children, all the children of the world.

  134. What are they?

  135. Red and yellow, black and white, they are...

  136. Comprehending the love of Christ is more than understanding the words of a song

  137. or reciting them.

  138. The word that Paul uses here when he talks about comprehending

  139. is a word that means to have a grip on something and understand it.

  140. At the heart of our faith, and I want you to recognize this,

  141. is the truth that God has revealed Himself to us,

  142. and He wants us to understand who He is and what He's told us.

  143. I want you to turn back in your Bible just for a moment to a passage in Deuteronomy

  144. where that truth becomes undeniably clear.

  145. Deuteronomy chapter 30, if you would go there just for a moment.

    Deuteronomy 30 chapter mention

  146. Deuteronomy chapter 30, verse 11 through 14.

    Deuteronomy 30:11–14

  147. I'm going to skip from 11 to 14.

  148. So let's just go to Deuteronomy chapter 30.

    Deuteronomy 30 chapter mention

  149. And in verse 11 it says,

  150. For this commandment that I command you today is not too hard for you,

  151. neither is it far off.

  152. We are going to preach this summer in the evening services

  153. during the time that we do not have small group.

  154. Pastor Saul and I are going to play tag team.

  155. That's not like WWF or whatever else,

  156. but we're going to tag team,

  157. and we're going to preach on some theological truths.

  158. One of them has to do with the clarity that God has

  159. in communicating His Word to us.

  160. We're going to talk about the Scriptures and God's intention

  161. that it's understandable.

  162. And so as you look at this passage,

  163. here is Moses speaking to his children at the end of his life,

  164. and he says,

  165. Listen, let me tell you something about this book that you have.

  166. It's not too hard.

  167. It's not so complicated that you can't get it.

  168. And then look at verse 14.

  169. But the Word is very near you.

  170. It is in your mouth and in your heart so that you can do it.

  171. I want you to recognize that God's intention is for us to understand His Word.

  172. His desire and His delight is that we comprehend His Word

  173. and that it makes a difference in our life.

  174. Having said that, I want you to recognize that it does take work.

  175. It does take work.

  176. And I think about a passage over in Job,

  177. and I want you to go there as well if you would.

  178. Job chapter 42 verse 5.

    Job 42:5

  179. Job is a very interesting book that deals with the matter of human suffering.

  180. And most of us, when we're going through suffering,

  181. and I can tell you that every one of us will,

  182. things are not going to go the way you want.

  183. And you're going to find yourself asking the question on occasion,

  184. Why me, Lord?

  185. What have I ever done?

  186. Right?

  187. I mean, it's a great song.

  188. But, you know, we're going to ask ourselves,

  189. So what did I do?

  190. I've been reading through the book of John repeatedly,

  191. and I found myself again at that passage where,

  192. Remember the man who was born blind,

  193. and the disciples say to him,

  194. All right, all right.

  195. So who sinned?

  196. Did he sin?

  197. Or did his parents sin so this happened to him?

  198. You see, we often think that things happen to us

  199. just because of things we've done

  200. or things that other people have done, etc.

  201. And here is Job going through all this suffering.

  202. Things aren't going well,

  203. and he finds himself not only dealing with his suffering,

  204. but he has good friends who show up,

  205. and what do his good friends tell him?

  206. You had it coming to you.

  207. Now, that's a real good friend, isn't it?

  208. You know, if you'd been a little better guy,

  209. and the day list and bad things don't happen

  210. unless you're a bad dude,

  211. and so suffer, bud, and learn from it.

  212. And at the end of the day,

  213. God shows up on the scene.

  214. Does God explain to Job why he's suffering?

  215. What's the answer?

  216. Nope.

  217. Let me say that again slowly.

  218. Nope.

  219. And we come to Job chapter 42, verse 5.

    Job 42:5

  220. I have heard of you by the hearing of the ear,

  221. but now mine eye sees you.

  222. Remember, the point that I wanted to make

  223. is that God's Word is there for us to understand,

  224. but I've got to tell you that it does take some work.

  225. And the idea that it's just like,

  226. we can all lie around and spend our days in carelessness

  227. and want and pleasure

  228. and think that we're going to understand the Word.

  229. It doesn't work that way.

  230. And so here we find Job going through the process of suffering,

  231. and then he's crying out to God,

  232. what am I doing?

  233. What do I need to learn?

  234. And God says, hey, let me tell you who I am.

  235. And all that he does, really, is reveal his creative power.

  236. That's what he does.

  237. By the way, were you there when I did thus and so,

  238. or thus and so, and thus and so?

  239. And Job finally comes to the point of saying,

  240. you know what, I get it.

  241. You're awesome.

  242. You're wonderful.

  243. Now, in more specific terms to our lesson today,

  244. God wants us to grasp the scope of his love

  245. and its incredible value.

  246. At the heart of what we find the Apostle Paul praying,

  247. and by the way, when the Apostle Paul penned these words,

  248. because we understand from our grasp of the doctrine of Scripture,

  249. these words were not something that Paul thought up on his own.

  250. Why do we have these Scriptures?

  251. All Scripture is given to us by inspiration.

  252. The Spirit of God instructed Paul to write these words,

  253. and they give to us some indication of what God has in mind.

  254. And here is Paul praying,

  255. I want you believers to understand the scope of the love of God

  256. and its incredible value.

  257. And so as we look at these four words that we find here in the passage,

  258. I want to make an appeal to you that they were not designed for speed reading,

  259. nor were they designed for speed thinking.

  260. There in verse 18 it says,

  261. that you would comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length

  262. and height and depth,

  263. and to know the love of Christ.

  264. Each word is important.

  265. And the Spirit of God intends for each of these words to be meditated upon

  266. and given careful consideration

  267. and allow the depth and the beauty of what is expressed in these words

  268. to then encourage us in understanding the scope and breadth,

  269. the depth, the beauty,

  270. of the all-surpassing love of Christ for us.

  271. Let's think about the four things that he says.

  272. He says, I want you to understand the breadth of the love of Christ.

  273. What is the breadth of His love?

  274. Turn over in your Bible, if you would, just for a moment,

  275. over to a passage in Revelation chapter 5, verse 9,

    Revelation 5:9

  276. and I want you to stop and think what eternity is going to be like,

  277. and one of the settings or scenes that you and I are going to enjoy.

  278. Revelation chapter 5, verse 9.

    Revelation 5:9

  279. And they sang a new song.

  280. By the way, sidebar, my hearing is going,

  281. so one of the things that if you see me doing it occasionally,

  282. don't think I've gone off,

  283. just understand that probably at the point I need hearing aids,

  284. they're all shot out,

  285. but I like to, embarrassing thing to do,

  286. but I like to cup my ears, my ears with my hands.

  287. Do you know what that does?

  288. That kind of amplifies the beauty of hearing people sing,

  289. and there's something about listening to the people of Christ

  290. sing the glory of Christ.

  291. It is just beautiful.

  292. And here is John.

  293. He says,

  294. And they sang a new song,

  295. saying,

  296. Do you understand how broad His love is?

  297. The other day I was filling out a form,

  298. actually,

  299. at the Social Security Administration,

  300. or whatever it was,

  301. and I had to identify my ethnicity.

  302. And now they have one little box,

  303. refused.

  304. Well, I thought,

  305. Oh, don't be that way,

  306. so I checked off white.

  307. You know?

  308. And I think,

  309. You know,

  310. every tribe and nation,

  311. do you realize that?

  312. One of the things that I take pleasure in

  313. when I pray for our different missionaries,

  314. I was praying for Mark Furman this morning

  315. and his ministry in China and India.

  316. I like,

  317. I find pleasure,

  318. as I grow in understanding the scope of ministry,

  319. I find pleasure in praying for people around the world.

  320. It reminds me,

  321. They're all over the place.

  322. They're in China.

  323. They're in Japan.

  324. They're in Africa.

  325. They're in India.

  326. They're in America.

  327. They're in Ecuador.

  328. All over the world,

  329. there are people who,

  330. by the grace of God,

  331. have come to be part of the family of God,

  332. and that's the breadth of His love.

  333. I want you to think with me now

  334. about the length of His love.

  335. And in Jeremiah chapter 31, verse 3,

    Jeremiah 31:3

  336. it says this,

  337. I have loved you with an everlasting love.

  338. When did God start loving you?

  339. You know,

  340. when I look at myself in the mirror,

  341. I got to tell you,

  342. I'm not like that,

  343. I'm not what I ought to be,

  344. but I'm not like that wicked witch

  345. or whatever woman

  346. who has looked at herself in the mirror

  347. and said,

  348. Mirror, mirror on the wall,

  349. who's the fairest of them all, right?

  350. I don't do that.

  351. But,

  352. I look at myself and think,

  353. jeez.

  354. You know,

  355. and here's the truth.

  356. I was sitting down here this morning,

  357. sitting right there,

  358. meditating and praying about the sermon,

  359. and I found myself struggling

  360. with that age-old battle

  361. that takes place in my life.

  362. And the remedy

  363. was to remind myself

  364. of the unfailing,

  365. unconditional,

  366. never-changing love of Christ.

  367. And do you know what the Scripture says?

  368. I have loved you with an everlasting love.

  369. I can tell when people

  370. are not convinced

  371. of that significance.

  372. Do you know what's a giveaway?

  373. When people are not convinced

  374. of the everlasting,

  375. absolute,

  376. certain love of Christ,

  377. they're self-consumed,

  378. they're unhappy,

  379. they're insecure,

  380. and they're pretty irritable

  381. with other people.

  382. Do you know why?

  383. Because the false god

  384. that they worship

  385. invariably is insecure.

  386. And here is Paul saying,

  387. I want you to understand

  388. the length.

  389. How far does his love go?

  390. It started from everlasting.

  391. And over there

  392. in Revelation chapter 13,

    Revelation 13:8

  393. verse 8,

  394. and again in 17,

  395. verse 8,

  396. we find a very similar statement

  397. in which John speaks

  398. about the fact

  399. that our names were written

  400. in the book of life

  401. before what?

  402. Help me here.

  403. When was your name

  404. written in the book?

  405. Was it when you decided

  406. to trust in Jesus?

  407. Is that when it was written?

  408. No.

  409. It was written before the what?

  410. The foundation of the world.

  411. Beloved,

  412. I take comfort

  413. in knowing that.

  414. I like the fact,

  415. and this morning

  416. as I was listening

  417. to the songs

  418. that we were singing together,

  419. I was just kind of

  420. matching up

  421. some of the scriptures

  422. that bear on those passages.

  423. And let me tell you

  424. what it does for me.

  425. It amplifies my appreciation

  426. for the music

  427. that we sing.

  428. And I was thinking

  429. about what it says

  430. that he has his hand

  431. and on his hand

  432. is my name.

  433. My name.

  434. And someday, beloved,

  435. we are going to meet

  436. the one who has loved us

  437. from eternity past.

  438. And that's going to be

  439. pretty good, isn't it?

  440. That's going to be something

  441. that is going to lift up

  442. our hearts and,

  443. oh man,

  444. I can't tell you

  445. how sweet that day

  446. is going to be.

  447. I remember the last time

  448. I traveled to India,

  449. I was gone for

  450. who knows how long

  451. it seemed like

  452. an incredibly long time.

  453. And I remember

  454. getting off the,

  455. as I was,

  456. this is something

  457. that happens in my heart.

  458. When my body starts

  459. turning towards coming home,

  460. guess what happens

  461. to my thinking?

  462. It kind of zeros in

  463. down on my honey.

  464. Okay?

  465. And I was over there

  466. in Bangalore

  467. and when I walked

  468. into the airport,

  469. I was thinking,

  470. I am going home

  471. to see Judith.

  472. And the closer I got,

  473. guess what?

  474. the more focused

  475. my thinking was.

  476. Beloved,

  477. the day is coming

  478. when we are going

  479. to see Jesus

  480. and can I tell you something?

  481. If your heart

  482. does not long

  483. for the day

  484. that you will see Him,

  485. I would ask you

  486. a question,

  487. what's happened?

  488. Or maybe you don't know Him.

  489. I want you to recognize

  490. there's another statement

  491. that Paul makes there.

  492. He talks about the height.

  493. There in the passage,

  494. He says that you would

  495. understand the breadth

  496. and the length

  497. and then He says height.

  498. And I stop and recognize

  499. that that is a reference

  500. to the exaltation,

  501. the height to which

  502. He has lifted us.

  503. I'm awestruck

  504. when I stop

  505. and consider

  506. that His love

  507. has rescued

  508. wounded,

  509. rebellious,

  510. bitter enemies

  511. of the cross

  512. and He has made

  513. those same people

  514. His own.

  515. And you know what?

  516. His love

  517. will bring us home

  518. to glory

  519. and to perfect union

  520. with Him.

  521. I think about a passage

  522. and there are many

  523. that would bear

  524. on this subject,

  525. but turn over

  526. in your Bible

  527. to John chapter 17

    John 17:24

  528. verse 24 and 26.

  529. This is Jesus

  530. in His high priestly prayer

  531. as He prays

  532. for believers

  533. and here's what He says

  534. in verse 24.

  535. He says,

  536. Listen,

  537. Father,

  538. I desire that they also

  539. whom You have given Me

  540. may be with Me

  541. where I am.

  542. Yeah,

  543. I love Jesus,

  544. but I don't really care

  545. to be around Him.

  546. Huh?

  547. No.

  548. Jesus says,

  549. I love them,

  550. I love them,

  551. I love them,

  552. I want them

  553. to be where I am.

  554. To see My glory

  555. that You have given Me

  556. because,

  557. listen to this,

  558. because You loved Me

  559. before the foundation

  560. of the world.

  561. Do you see the connectedness

  562. between this whole issue?

  563. Jesus wants us

  564. to have communion

  565. and intimacy,

  566. but the heart of it,

  567. He says,

  568. it's because You've loved Me.

  569. Then look at verse 26.

  570. I made known to them

  571. Your name

  572. and I will continue

  573. to make it known.

  574. Now follow the remainder

  575. of the verse

  576. because it is poignant

  577. that the love

  578. with which You have loved Me

  579. may be in them

  580. and I in them.

  581. Jesus is praying

  582. before the cross

  583. and He says,

  584. listen,

  585. here's what I'm asking

  586. that You would do

  587. for these

  588. dear,

  589. dear

  590. disciples

  591. and those

  592. who follow

  593. in belief

  594. in the centuries

  595. to come.

  596. that the love

  597. with which You

  598. have loved Me

  599. may be

  600. in them.

  601. Oh, Jesus,

  602. I would like

  603. to win the lottery.

  604. Pfft!

  605. Oh, Jesus,

  606. I would like

  607. better health.

  608. Oh, Jesus,

  609. I need different

  610. neighbors.

  611. Oh, Jesus,

  612. no,

  613. that the love

  614. with which You

  615. have loved Me

  616. may be in them.

  617. Let's go to

  618. one other piece

  619. and I have

  620. to tell you

  621. that I've asked

  622. myself over

  623. and over again

  624. this week,

  625. why was this

  626. last?

  627. The depth.

  628. I think the

  629. matter of height

  630. and depth

  631. stand close

  632. together

  633. and give us

  634. some

  635. depth

  636. of thinking

  637. that deserves

  638. attention.

  639. I can't

  640. help but think

  641. I appreciate

  642. Pastor Ken

  643. mentioning the

  644. man who

  645. recited Isaiah

    Isaiah 53 chapter mention

  646. chapter 53

  647. and I have

  648. in my notes

  649. I have referenced

  650. Isaiah chapter 53

    Isaiah 53 chapter mention

  651. where it talks

  652. about the Lord

  653. Jesus and His

  654. suffering for us.

  655. And I'm reminded

  656. of what Jesus

  657. did in order

  658. to save you

  659. and to save me.

  660. It is the most

  661. incredible,

  662. the most

  663. unbelievable thing

  664. of all of

  665. human history

  666. that God

  667. would send

  668. His own

  669. Son

  670. to take

  671. upon Himself

  672. human flesh

  673. to die

  674. in our place

  675. and to rise

  676. again

  677. so that

  678. those who

  679. believe in Him

  680. might have

  681. an intimate

  682. relationship

  683. with the

  684. Lord of glory.

  685. I think

  686. back over

  687. to Philippians

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  688. chapter 2

  689. and you

  690. remember

  691. where Paul

  692. is writing

  693. to the church

  694. at Philippi

  695. and he is

  696. dealing with

  697. the struggle

  698. that church

  699. is having

  700. with attitudes

  701. and relationships

  702. with one another

  703. and he says

  704. let this mind

  705. be in you

  706. which was also

  707. in Christ Jesus.

  708. In other words

  709. hey, hey, hey

  710. think the way

  711. Jesus thought

  712. and having

  713. said that

  714. he says

  715. alright

  716. let me help you

  717. with that

  718. let me talk

  719. about what

  720. Jesus did

  721. he had

  722. every right

  723. to view

  724. himself as

  725. co-equal

  726. with the

  727. Father

  728. rightfully so

  729. and yet

  730. he willingly

  731. humbled himself

  732. and took upon

  733. himself

  734. human form

  735. and not only

  736. that but he

  737. obeyed the

  738. Father and was

  739. willing to go

  740. to the cross

  741. for you

  742. that's depth

  743. that's depth

  744. now I want

  745. to tell you

  746. that these

  747. four dimensions

  748. of his love

  749. are designed

  750. to serve

  751. as prompters

  752. and the deeper

  753. you think

  754. about his love

  755. the more blessed

  756. you are going

  757. to be

  758. let me say

  759. that again

  760. slowly

  761. and I don't

  762. have it on

  763. a header

  764. over the board

  765. but let me

  766. just say this

  767. these four

  768. dimensions

  769. you have them

  770. there in front

  771. of you

  772. it speaks

  773. about his

  774. breadth

  775. and length

  776. and width

  777. and depth

  778. and I want

  779. you to

  780. height and depth

  781. and I want

  782. you to understand

  783. that these

  784. four are

  785. prompters

  786. they're designed

  787. to help you

  788. think carefully

  789. and accurately

  790. about the subject

  791. of the love

  792. of Christ

  793. see it's one

  794. thing to memorize

  795. the little song

  796. and sing it

  797. I appreciate

  798. Tim Bauer

  799. bailing me out

  800. last week

  801. when we

  802. I found myself

  803. wanting the words

  804. to a song

  805. and Tim

  806. kindly recited

  807. them

  808. his love

  809. never gives up

  810. right

  811. you know

  812. never walks

  813. out on me

  814. his love

  815. never fails

  816. and here

  817. when Paul

  818. says

  819. hey listen

  820. I want you

  821. to think

  822. about

  823. the breadth

  824. of his love

  825. the intention

  826. is that we

  827. massage that

  828. a little bit

  829. and squeeze it

  830. and figure out

  831. what it means

  832. to us

  833. personally

  834. in the frame

  835. of scripture

  836. let me say

  837. this carefully

  838. to think about

  839. it

  840. and not think

  841. about it

  842. in the frame

  843. of scripture

  844. is at best

  845. very dangerous

  846. now why would

  847. I say

  848. that

  849. I don't

  850. know

  851. should

  852. pastor

  853. say

  854. such a

  855. thing

  856. apart

  857. from the

  858. counsel

  859. and instruction

  860. of the word

  861. of God

  862. my thinking

  863. is very

  864. flawed

  865. would you

  866. agree with

  867. that

  868. the heart

  869. is deceitful

  870. what

  871. and desperately

  872. wicked

  873. who can

  874. know it

  875. left to

  876. my own

  877. devices

  878. I go

  879. left of

  880. center

  881. every time

  882. I can't

  883. tell you

  884. how often

  885. the scriptures

  886. help me

  887. think

  888. properly

  889. so I want

  890. you to

  891. recognize

  892. that these

  893. verses

  894. are given

  895. to us

  896. to help

  897. us think

  898. carefully

  899. and it's

  900. not just

  901. a matter

  902. of singing

  903. Jesus

  904. loves me

  905. this

  906. I know

  907. it's

  908. going

  909. further

  910. than that

  911. you can

  912. sing

  913. that song

  914. until the

  915. cows come

  916. home

  917. and be

  918. very

  919. very

  920. fruitless

  921. as a

  922. believer

  923. do you

  924. understand

  925. that

  926. it's

  927. another

  928. thing

  929. I would

  930. encourage

  931. you to

  932. do this

  933. it's

  934. another

  935. thing

  936. to

  937. memorize

  938. chapter 3

  939. verse 14

  940. through 19

  941. but I've

  942. had people

  943. come in

  944. and sit

  945. in my

  946. office

  947. and they

  948. have

  949. accomplished

  950. my

  951. counseling

  952. assignment

  953. and they

  954. have

  955. memorized

  956. the

  957. passage

  958. and they

  959. rattled

  960. it

  961. off

  962. but they

  963. are

  964. still

  965. self

  966. consumed

  967. and

  968. unhappy

  969. do you

  970. know what

  971. every good

  972. Jew would

  973. do

  974. morning and

  975. evening

  976. as you

  977. might

  978. know

  979. they would

  980. recite

  981. the

  982. Shema

  983. hear

  984. O Israel

  985. the Lord

  986. our God

  987. the Lord

  988. is one

  989. and you

  990. shall love

  991. the Lord

  992. your God

  993. with all

  994. your heart

  995. they said

  996. it in the

  997. morning

  998. and by the

  999. way

  1000. if you

  1001. want to

  1002. go on

  1003. the web

  1004. it's

  1005. always

  1006. entertaining

  1007. to kind

  1008. of say

  1009. so what

  1010. was that

  1011. like

  1012. and there's

  1013. actually

  1014. rabbinical

  1015. instruction

  1016. on when

  1017. to say

  1018. the Shema

  1019. to get

  1020. the most

  1021. value

  1022. from your

  1023. obedience

  1024. in fact

  1025. if you

  1026. say it

  1027. after sunrise

  1028. it's a good

  1029. thing but it

  1030. doesn't count

  1031. as many

  1032. points as

  1033. if you

  1034. say it

  1035. before sunrise

  1036. and if

  1037. you really

  1038. want to

  1039. die as

  1040. a good

  1041. good Jew

  1042. you need

  1043. to have

  1044. the very

  1045. last thing

  1046. you say

  1047. being the

  1048. Shema

  1049. hear

  1050. oh

  1051. Israel

  1052. the Lord

  1053. our God

  1054. the Lord

  1055. is one

  1056. people don't

  1057. go to heaven

  1058. because they

  1059. say the

  1060. Shema

  1061. nor do they

  1062. go to heaven

  1063. because they

  1064. know

  1065. chapter 3

  1066. verse 14

  1067. through 19

  1068. by heart

  1069. what the

  1070. father wants

  1071. us to do

  1072. is to

  1073. meditate

  1074. upon this

  1075. Bible truth

  1076. with the

  1077. enabling of

  1078. the spirit

  1079. of God

  1080. and be

  1081. affected by

  1082. it

  1083. so

  1084. let me

  1085. play it

  1086. out for

  1087. you in

  1088. practical

  1089. terms

  1090. grasping

  1091. his love

  1092. takes the

  1093. spirit's

  1094. power

  1095. and

  1096. persistent

  1097. effort

  1098. there's

  1099. no

  1100. accident

  1101. for the

  1102. reason

  1103. that Paul

  1104. prays

  1105. as he

  1106. does

  1107. and I

  1108. want to

  1109. kind of

  1110. spell

  1111. something

  1112. out for

  1113. you here

  1114. a little

  1115. bit

  1116. in our

  1117. study of

  1118. Ephesians

  1119. we commented

  1120. on the

  1121. fact at

  1122. the very

  1123. beginning

  1124. that the

  1125. first three

  1126. chapters

  1127. are

  1128. informative

  1129. of the

  1130. glory of

  1131. Christ

  1132. in our

  1133. redemption

  1134. and the

  1135. wonderful work

  1136. of God

  1137. in saving

  1138. us

  1139. the last

  1140. three chapters

  1141. are about

  1142. our behavior

  1143. okay

  1144. and it's

  1145. very important

  1146. to recognize

  1147. that in

  1148. scripture

  1149. as it should

  1150. be in

  1151. parenting

  1152. we talk

  1153. about who

  1154. God is

  1155. and what

  1156. he's done

  1157. for us

  1158. before we

  1159. talk about

  1160. how we

  1161. should behave

  1162. towards him

  1163. and so

  1164. as we

  1165. look at

  1166. this passage

  1167. in

  1168. Ephesians

  1169. we're

  1170. at the

  1171. point

  1172. the pivot

  1173. point

  1174. and the

  1175. pivot

  1176. point

  1177. in particular

  1178. is understanding

  1179. comprehending

  1180. the love

  1181. of Christ

  1182. because

  1183. out of

  1184. that

  1185. will flow

  1186. all of

  1187. our

  1188. obedience

  1189. and the

  1190. fruitful

  1191. joy that

  1192. comes with

  1193. it

  1194. so it

  1195. makes

  1196. sense

  1197. then to

  1198. pray that

  1199. Paul would

  1200. ask for

  1201. the Spirit's

  1202. help and

  1203. you should

  1204. do the

  1205. same

  1206. I would

  1207. encourage

  1208. you

  1209. let me

  1210. have you

  1211. look up

  1212. just for a

  1213. minute

  1214. look at

  1215. me

  1216. please

  1217. you should

  1218. pray

  1219. regularly

  1220. you should

  1221. pray

  1222. regularly

  1223. that the

  1224. Spirit of

  1225. God would

  1226. help you

  1227. grow in

  1228. understanding

  1229. the love

  1230. of Christ

  1231. I'm not

  1232. going to

  1233. ask you

  1234. to raise

  1235. your hand

  1236. and say

  1237. when did

  1238. you pray

  1239. that last

  1240. but I

  1241. would move

  1242. that up

  1243. your prayer

  1244. list

  1245. I have

  1246. a natural

  1247. deficiency

  1248. to

  1249. understanding

  1250. the love

  1251. of Christ

  1252. and let me

  1253. tell you

  1254. something

  1255. understanding

  1256. the love

  1257. of Christ

  1258. is the

  1259. genesis

  1260. of loving

  1261. Christ

  1262. do you

  1263. follow that

  1264. it's the

  1265. way it

  1266. happens

  1267. you understand

  1268. the love

  1269. of Christ

  1270. and that

  1271. nurtures

  1272. and stimulates

  1273. and encourages

  1274. you to grow

  1275. in your love

  1276. for Christ

  1277. now you're

  1278. sitting there

  1279. with a heart

  1280. that's stone

  1281. clothed

  1282. towards Jesus

  1283. one of two

  1284. things is

  1285. going on

  1286. you don't

  1287. know him

  1288. or you've

  1289. allowed the

  1290. world and

  1291. the issues

  1292. of life

  1293. to creep

  1294. in and

  1295. rob you

  1296. of the

  1297. supremacy

  1298. of the

  1299. joy

  1300. of loving

  1301. the lover

  1302. of your

  1303. soul

  1304. and the

  1305. starting point

  1306. is prayer

  1307. it also

  1308. makes sense

  1309. to not only

  1310. pray

  1311. but to spend

  1312. more time

  1313. in the word

  1314. I am

  1315. flummoxed

  1316. that's a new

  1317. word for you

  1318. to look up

  1319. I suppose

  1320. flummoxed

  1321. I'm kind

  1322. of stumped

  1323. okay

  1324. at the

  1325. many people

  1326. who tell me

  1327. that they

  1328. love Jesus

  1329. but they

  1330. never crack

  1331. the book

  1332. and read

  1333. about him

  1334. or find

  1335. out what

  1336. he has

  1337. to say

  1338. or care

  1339. about being

  1340. with him

  1341. in prayer

  1342. what kind

  1343. of relationship

  1344. do you have

  1345. with someone

  1346. else that you

  1347. really don't

  1348. care about

  1349. talking with

  1350. or listening

  1351. to

  1352. you're fooling

  1353. yourself

  1354. let me

  1355. close off

  1356. by

  1357. mashing

  1358. the

  1359. accelerator

  1360. to the

  1361. floor

  1362. comprehending

  1363. his love

  1364. leads to

  1365. his fullness

  1366. Ephesians

    Ephesians 3:19

  1367. chapter 3

  1368. verse 19

  1369. it says

  1370. and to know

  1371. the love

  1372. of Christ

  1373. so how can

  1374. you know

  1375. something that

  1376. surpasses

  1377. knowledge

  1378. it's saying

  1379. hey

  1380. it's out

  1381. there

  1382. wrap your

  1383. arms around

  1384. it

  1385. know the

  1386. love of

  1387. Christ

  1388. that surpasses

  1389. knowledge

  1390. that you

  1391. may be

  1392. filled

  1393. with all

  1394. the fullness

  1395. of God

  1396. that is

  1397. that is

  1398. just kind

  1399. of like

  1400. that is

  1401. it's like

  1402. putting it

  1403. all together

  1404. so what do

  1405. you want

  1406. in life

  1407. I want

  1408. the fullness

  1409. of God

  1410. well what do

  1411. you really

  1412. want

  1413. I want

  1414. the fullness

  1415. of God

  1416. what would

  1417. you be

  1418. willing to

  1419. sacrifice

  1420. anything and

  1421. everything for

  1422. I will

  1423. sacrifice

  1424. for the

  1425. fullness

  1426. of God

  1427. let me say

  1428. in relationship

  1429. that

  1430. one

  1431. grasping

  1432. his love

  1433. is the

  1434. fruit of

  1435. faith

  1436. there's some

  1437. of you sitting

  1438. here that

  1439. really don't

  1440. know

  1441. how deep

  1442. and how

  1443. wonderful

  1444. the love

  1445. of Christ

  1446. is

  1447. and you

  1448. have been

  1449. slogging

  1450. your way

  1451. through

  1452. life

  1453. you know

  1454. what

  1455. John said

  1456. in 1st John

    John 4:7

  1457. chapter 4

  1458. verse 7

  1459. he says

  1460. love is of

  1461. God

  1462. so where

  1463. does it

  1464. come from

  1465. that you

  1466. miserable

  1467. broken

  1468. ruined

  1469. sinner

  1470. should come

  1471. to begin

  1472. to love

  1473. God

  1474. it is

  1475. the work

  1476. of the

  1477. spirit

  1478. that's

  1479. gotten

  1480. a hold

  1481. of your

  1482. life

  1483. and is

  1484. drawing

  1485. you

  1486. into

  1487. relationship

  1488. and is

  1489. giving

  1490. you

  1491. that

  1492. desire

  1493. secondly

  1494. fully

  1495. grasping

  1496. his love

  1497. gives us

  1498. his fullness

  1499. I wish

  1500. for time

  1501. I had

  1502. more time

  1503. we'll deal

  1504. with it

  1505. another point

  1506. so this

  1507. morning

  1508. I speak

  1509. to you

  1510. this here

  1511. in this

  1512. place

  1513. recognizing

  1514. that

  1515. one of

  1516. two things

  1517. is true

  1518. you may

  1519. be here

  1520. and you

  1521. do not

  1522. know

  1523. Christ

  1524. now

  1525. you may

  1526. know all

  1527. the rules

  1528. you may

  1529. even know

  1530. the vocabulary

  1531. but you

  1532. have never

  1533. had an

  1534. interest

  1535. and an

  1536. affection

  1537. for the

  1538. Lord of

  1539. glory

  1540. who occupies

  1541. the praises

  1542. of eternity

  1543. and I

  1544. gotta tell

  1545. you

  1546. love

  1547. for

  1548. Christ

  1549. comes

  1550. through

  1551. his

  1552. grace

  1553. and this

  1554. morning

  1555. as you

  1556. stand

  1557. or sit

  1558. here

  1559. I would

  1560. appeal

  1561. to you

  1562. if there

  1563. is a

  1564. lack

  1565. of

  1566. interest

  1567. in

  1568. Christ

  1569. and

  1570. no

  1571. affection

  1572. for

  1573. him

  1574. you

  1575. should

  1576. turn

  1577. over

  1578. the birth

  1579. certificate

  1580. and say

  1581. yes

  1582. when

  1583. did I

  1584. really

  1585. come

  1586. to know

  1587. Christ

  1588. and where

  1589. is the

  1590. evidence

  1591. of his

  1592. grace

  1593. today

  1594. may be

  1595. the day

  1596. also

  1597. that you

  1598. as a

  1599. believer

  1600. need to

  1601. rededicate

  1602. yourself

  1603. to growing

  1604. in his

  1605. love

  1606. and how

  1607. are you

  1608. going to

  1609. do that

  1610. well

  1611. we don't

  1612. rededicate

  1613. ourselves

  1614. to anything

  1615. that we

  1616. are fully

  1617. persuaded

  1618. that we're

  1619. doing pretty

  1620. well at

  1621. do you

  1622. follow what

  1623. I'm

  1624. saying

  1625. but if

  1626. you're

  1627. sitting

  1628. here

  1629. and

  1630. your

  1631. love

  1632. has

  1633. grown

  1634. cold

  1635. then I

  1636. would

  1637. plead

  1638. with you

  1639. that with

  1640. humility

  1641. and

  1642. brokenness

  1643. you

  1644. begin

  1645. praying

  1646. Lord

  1647. now listen

  1648. I think

  1649. what we

  1650. say in

  1651. prayer

  1652. is pretty

  1653. important

  1654. Lord

  1655. I want

  1656. you to

  1657. do

  1658. whatever

  1659. you

  1660. think

  1661. necessary

  1662. to

  1663. encourage

  1664. me

  1665. to

  1666. persistently

  1667. grow

  1668. in my

  1669. love

  1670. for

  1671. you

  1672. I

  1673. want

  1674. to

  1675. grow

  1676. in

  1677. love

  1678. I'm

  1679. going to

  1680. pray

  1681. for

  1682. that

  1683. I

  1684. don't

  1685. care

  1686. what

  1687. the

  1688. cost

  1689. let's

  1690. close

  1691. in

  1692. prayer

  1693. precious

  1694. father

  1695. this

  1696. morning

  1697. our

  1698. hearts

  1699. revel

  1700. in

  1701. the

  1702. glory

  1703. of

  1704. Christ

  1705. we

  1706. look

  1707. forward

  1708. to

  1709. the

  1710. day

  1711. that

  1712. we

  1713. are

  1714. going

  1715. to

  1716. see

  1717. the

  1718. lover

  1719. of

  1720. our

  1721. soul

  1722. and

  1723. be

  1724. satisfied

  1725. and

  1726. I

  1727. have

  1728. no

  1729. doubt

  1730. that

  1731. there

  1732. are

  1733. some

  1734. here

  1735. this

  1736. morning

  1737. that

  1738. do

  1739. not

  1740. know

  1741. Christ

  1742. and

  1743. there

  1744. are

  1745. others

  1746. here

  1747. whose

  1748. lives

  1749. and

  1750. hearts

  1751. have

  1752. grown

  1753. cold

  1754. it's

  1755. been

  1756. years

  1757. since

  1758. they've

  1759. really

  1760. had

  1761. warm

  1762. affections

  1763. for

  1764. the

  1765. Lord

  1766. Jesus

  1767. they're

  1768. unhappy

  1769. they're

  1770. discontent

  1771. they're

  1772. embittered

  1773. they're

  1774. disobedient

  1775. and

  1776. Christ

  1777. bids

  1778. them

  1779. pray

  1780. to have

  1781. that love

  1782. rekindled

  1783. by the

  1784. spirit

  1785. of

  1786. God

  1787. that

  1788. their

  1789. obedience

  1790. would

  1791. be

  1792. willing

  1793. that

  1794. their

  1795. walk

  1796. would

  1797. be

  1798. holy

  1799. there

  1800. are

  1801. some

  1802. here

  1803. today

  1804. that

  1805. do

  1806. not

  1807. know

  1808. Christ

  1809. and

  1810. this

  1811. morning

  1812. father

  1813. I

  1814. would

  1815. plead

  1816. with

  1817. you

  1818. that

  1819. in

  1820. your

  1821. grace

  1822. you

  1823. would

  1824. draw

  1825. them

  1826. to

  1827. the

  1828. cross

  1829. and

  1830. we

  1831. ask

  1832. this

  1833. for

  1834. the

  1835. glory

  1836. of

  1837. Christ

  1838. amen

  1839. let's

  1840. stand

  1841. together

  1842. as

  1843. we

  1844. close

  1845. in

  1846. singing

  1847. and

  1848. I'm

  1849. going

  1850. to

  1851. ask

  1852. that

  1853. if

  1854. you're

  1855. !

  1856. here

  1857. this

  1858. !

  1859. morning

  1860. we

  1861. will

  1862. glory

  1863. in

  1864. my

  1865. Redeemer

  1866. whose

  1867. priceless

  1868. blood

  1869. has

  1870. ransomed

  1871. me

  1872. mine

  1873. was

  1874. the

  1875. sin

  1876. that

  1877. drove

  1878. the

  1879. bitterness

  1880. and

  1881. hung

  1882. him

  1883. on

  1884. that

  1885. judgment

  1886. tree

  1887. I

  1888. will

  1889. glory

  1890. in

  1891. my

  1892. Redeemer

  1893. who

  1894. crushed

  1895. the

  1896. power

  1897. of

  1898. sin

  1899. death

  1900. my

  1901. holy

  1902. Savior

  1903. before

  1904. before

  1905. the

  1906. holy

  1907. child

  1908. the

  1909. lamb

  1910. who

  1911. is

  1912. my

  1913. righteous

  1914. man

  1915. the

  1916. lamb

  1917. who

  1918. is

  1919. my

  1920. righteous

  1921. man

  1922. I

  1923. will

  1924. glory

  1925. in

  1926. my

  1927. Redeemer

  1928. my

  1929. life

  1930. be

  1931. bought

  1932. my

  1933. love

  1934. he

  1935. owes

  1936. I

  1937. have

  1938. no

  1939. longings

  1940. for

  1941. another

  1942. I'm

  1943. satisfied

  1944. with

  1945. him

  1946. alone

  1947. I

  1948. will

  1949. glory

  1950. in

  1951. my

  1952. Redeemer

  1953. His

  1954. faithfulness

  1955. my

  1956. standing

  1957. place

  1958. though

  1959. close

  1960. on

  1961. I

  1962. lead

  1963. and

  1964. rush

  1965. upon

  1966. me

  1967. my

  1968. feet

  1969. are

  1970. firm

  1971. held

  1972. by

  1973. His

  1974. grace

  1975. my

  1976. burden

  1977. are

  1978. firm

  1979. held

  1980. by

  1981. His

  1982. grace

  1983. I

  1984. will

  1985. glory

  1986. in

  1987. my

  1988. Redeemer

  1989. who

  1990. carries

  1991. me

  1992. on

  1993. eagles

  1994. way

  1995. He

  1996. crowns

  1997. my

  1998. life

  1999. with

  2000. loving

  2001. kindness
