  1. Take your Bibles and turn in them to Ephesians chapter 4. We're going to be looking at verses 7-10.

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  2. ! And I know for many of you it's repetitious, but I think sometimes

  3. repetition is appropriate, particularly given the importance of that which is to be repeated.

  4. And I would appeal to you this morning that while I preach, which is my responsibility and

  5. the preparation of my heart, that you who are God's people would pray for me.

  6. Let me read the passage.

  7. Ephesians chapter 4, verse 7.

    Ephesians 4:7

  8. But grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ's gift.

  9. Therefore, it says, when He ascended on high, He led a host of captives, and He gave gifts to men.

  10. In saying He ascended, what does it mean but that He also descended into the lower regions of the earth?

  11. He who descended is the one who also ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things.

  12. Let's pray together.

  13. Father, we are thankful for the fact that you have drawn us to this place by your kindness and your grace,

  14. that were it not for your work in prompting us to see the misery and the hopelessness of our sin,

  15. and in your mercy, burdening us and convicting us so that we cried out and asked for salvation.

  16. You who have saved us have drawn us together this morning that we might worship you,

  17. and that we might attend to your word first, that we might grow to know you better,

  18. and by that knowledge that we would grow in being more like the Lord Jesus Christ.

  19. And also that we would understand the way in which you want us,

  20. we who are your children, to walk and live in this world that is so desperate.

  21. And Father, we pray that your Spirit would give to us humble, contrite, hungry souls,

  22. that we might feast upon the word through the power of the Spirit.

  23. And Christ might be the one that is exalted.

  24. And we pray this in His name.

  25. Amen.

  26. Well, last week as we began, I started out by reminding you of the truth that when sin entered the world in the garden,

  27. the first visible evidence of the fact that sin had come was the fact that man and woman distanced themselves from one another.

  28. They were ashamed, it says, and they made clothing out of fig leaves and tried to cover themselves,

  29. and subsequent to that, they hid from God in the garden.

  30. And ever since sin entered the garden, sin has led to separation and a breakdown of relationships,

  31. and it is one of the things that manifests itself in every case where you see sin having its place.

  32. You see a broken and a separated, a disjointed, a disconnected group of people.

  33. And so you can understand why, after having taken three chapters, and that's what Paul did in the first three chapters of Ephesians,

  34. he laid out for us the glory of what Christ has done in salvation.

  35. Do you realize that salvation is something that is incredible beyond imagination?

  36. No man, no woman would have ever, in their wildest dreams, ever figured out how salvation should actually come about

  37. through God sending His Son to die in my place.

  38. You know, the truth of the matter is, the logic of the world would say,

  39. hey, here's how you save yourself.

  40. There are things you need to do.

  41. You need to do this, you need to do that.

  42. I bump into people all the time, and I ask them, so why should you get into heaven?

  43. And we say, well, my good outweighs my bad.

  44. You know, try that with one fly and a gallon of milk.

  45. Does the good outweigh the bad?

  46. What's the answer?

  47. Not on your life.

  48. You know, my good and my bad, here's the issue.

  49. God has judged every one of us, and we have fallen short of the glory of God, and we stand condemned.

  50. And God, in His kindness, brought salvation to us through the finished work of Christ.

  51. And three chapters lay out the glory of God in salvation.

  52. The next three chapters really deal with the way in which those who are saved are to live.

  53. And what we found in the last several weeks in particular, beginning there in Ephesians chapter 4,

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  54. is that Paul's lessons to the church at Ephesus begin with the subject of unity.

  55. Well, what does that have to do with it?

  56. I mean, let's get to the good stuff about how a husband is to behave towards his wife,

  57. and how a wife is to behave towards her husband, and how we are to be good children,

  58. or how we are to be good employers and employees.

  59. That's the heavy lifting stuff that we...

  60. No, no, no.

  61. The book of Ephesians is written principally to the body of Christ,

  62. and it begins, first of all, by reminding us of the corporate relationship we have.

  63. And all of the counsel of Ephesians flows and sits under this umbrella of the relationship we have together in the bride of Christ.

  64. And so, we see the opening discussion that Paul has of the practical life of the believer

  65. focuses in on this subject of unity.

  66. He actually is going to take the first 16 verses in Ephesians chapter 4

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  67. to lay out the doctrine of the unity of the body of Christ.

  68. And as we find, we remind ourselves of the fact that in the very first going couple verses there,

  69. we are told that unity is really something that comes from the Spirit of God.

  70. He's the one who made it.

  71. By the way, I would not be united with you, nor you with me,

  72. apart from the fact that we, by God's grace, have been put into lasting relationship.

  73. Were it not for conversion, you would not be my brother or my sister.

  74. And my relationship to you would be kind of circumstantial

  75. or dependent upon what you were to get out of it or I were to get out of it.

  76. Very kind of a manipulative kind of thing.

  77. And that issue of the sweetness of communion would be absent.

  78. And Paul says, hey, listen, you're united by the Spirit of God.

  79. And then he goes on, and there in the verses that we've looked at,

  80. he says, beginning there in verse 4, it says,

  81. One body, one spirit.

  82. We recognize that this issue of the unity of the body of Christ

  83. is something that really is hammered out theologically.

  84. We are one because of our faith in Christ.

  85. Do we have different perspectives on some nuanced things scripturally?

  86. And the answer is yes.

  87. But the truth of the matter is, here's the fact.

  88. All of us come to Christ by faith,

  89. having seen the broken, despicable condition of our soul,

  90. and we cry out and ask him to save us.

  91. We believe together in the virgin birth.

  92. We believe together in the sufficiency of Scripture.

  93. They're cardinal doctrines that we hold together.

  94. And that brings us now there to verse 7, actually through 10,

  95. where Paul is explaining this matter of unity a little further,

  96. and he brings into our understanding a very, very important doctrine,

  97. namely the matter of the doctrine of the gifts that God gives to us

  98. for the sake of unity.

  99. And so what we're going to find here in the text this morning

  100. is, first of all, that we are gifted by his grace.

  101. Look at the passage in verse 7.

  102. It says,

  103. But grace was given to each one of us

  104. according to the measure of God's gift.

  105. Paul opens his lesson here by talking about the fact

  106. that each believer at conversion, at salvation,

  107. is given something.

  108. The verses actually touch very, very briefly on the Bible truth

  109. that each believer is given a spiritual gift or gifts

  110. for the good of the body.

  111. It is evident by the short nature of Paul's comment here

  112. in Ephesians chapter 4

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  113. that the believers in that local congregation

  114. had some kind of understanding of the doctrine

  115. because he just alludes to it or comments on it and moves on.

  116. It is not the primary nature or substance

  117. of what he's going to teach in this case.

  118. And so we make the assumption that Paul evidently

  119. had taught it earlier or that Timothy had taught it

  120. so it wasn't necessary for him to launch into the full subject.

  121. Actually, the doctrine of the spiritual gifts

  122. appear in four major passages.

  123. And if you're into little devices to help you remember,

  124. remember 12s and 4s.

  125. If you want to remember where the passages are

  126. on spiritual gifts,

  127. and it is an important doctrine

  128. for your relationship to the body of Christ,

  129. think about it in terms of 12s and 4s.

  130. It is, first of all, in Romans chapter 12

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  131. in verses 3 through 8,

  132. and it is in, guess what,

  133. can anybody tell me the other 12?

  134. 1 Corinthians 12.

  135. If you got the 12s, you're good.

  136. Those are the predominant passages,

  137. and we're not going to look at them in detail this morning.

  138. But Romans 12, 1 Corinthians 12,

  139. Ephesians chapter 4,

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  140. what we're looking at today,

  141. and then 1 Peter chapter 4, verse 11 and 12.

    1 Peter 4:11

  142. I am not going to take the time this morning

  143. to go at this subject at length

  144. because in the past,

  145. we have at various times

  146. studied the matter of spiritual gifts.

  147. But I do want you to understand

  148. in a broad perspective.

  149. For one, each believer,

  150. as we see in the Scriptures,

  151. both in particular in Romans 12

  152. and in 1 Corinthians 12,

  153. each believer, every person,

  154. is equally valuable and important.

  155. I do want you to turn,

  156. so you can kind of put your eyes on this,

  157. turn back in your Bible a little bit

  158. to 1 Corinthians chapter 12.

    1 Corinthians 12 chapter mention

  159. Evident that the church in Corinth

  160. was struggling in their relationships

  161. with one another.

  162. We know that from the recurring cautions

  163. that Paul gives to the body of believers

  164. and the reminders over and over again

  165. of the factionalism

  166. or the kind of divisive spirits

  167. that seemed to have its place

  168. in that congregation,

  169. Paul would say,

  170. hey, this ought not to be.

  171. Now there in chapter 12, verse 1,

  172. he says,

  173. now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers,

  174. I do not want you to be uninformed.

  175. I want you to know the facts.

  176. Very interestingly then,

  177. when he begins with the subject,

  178. he says,

  179. you know that when you were pagans,

  180. you were led astray to mute idols

  181. however you were led.

  182. Therefore, I want you to understand

  183. that no one speaking in the Spirit of God

  184. ever says Jesus is accursed

  185. and no one can say Jesus is Lord

  186. except in the Holy Spirit.

  187. And so, kind of in a summary statement

  188. at the very beginning,

  189. and I think you understand this

  190. about many forms of writing,

  191. an author will usually tell you

  192. what's being said at the beginning

  193. and kind of an overview,

  194. and that's what we're looking at here.

  195. He then launches in

  196. to explain this larger issue

  197. of the gifting of the Spirit.

  198. He says, listen, verse 4,

  199. there are varieties of gifts

  200. that has the same Spirit,

  201. there are varieties of service

  202. but the same Lord,

  203. and there are varieties of activities

  204. but it's the same God who empowers.

  205. So we understand that every believer

  206. is equally valuable and important.

  207. Every believer is equally valuable

  208. and important.

  209. Secondly, I think it's fair to say

  210. that there really are no duplicates

  211. or unnecessary pieces.

  212. I want you to think about that

  213. just for a moment.

  214. You're the only you

  215. that God has ever or ever will make,

  216. and He has a part for you to play

  217. in His body,

  218. and He intends for you to get to it.

  219. I think that's important

  220. for us to understand.

  221. The fact that this matter

  222. of spiritual gifts

  223. is discussed four different times

  224. in the Scriptures

  225. indicates that it is of some importance

  226. to the kingdom of God

  227. and to the ministry

  228. that He has called all of us

  229. to be part of.

  230. The fact of the matter is

  231. is that in creating you

  232. the way He has made you,

  233. He has ordained for you

  234. to take the characteristics

  235. that you have

  236. and the spiritual gifts

  237. that you have

  238. and put them into valuable utility

  239. to the body of Christ.

  240. I love the fact

  241. that we really go after

  242. a vacation Bible school

  243. in a big way.

  244. It's a blast to watch

  245. as it kind of begins

  246. to gain steam

  247. somewhere back in,

  248. when is it, Pastor Saul?

  249. February, March,

  250. we begin talking about it,

  251. and people begin

  252. getting geared up for it

  253. and then we have

  254. the artists go to work

  255. and you know,

  256. I am brain dead in that area.

  257. A straight line

  258. is pushing it for me

  259. and they get over in the gym

  260. and they take a whole week

  261. putting the set together

  262. and I read a little article

  263. on the internet

  264. about the fact

  265. that those who are creative

  266. like dark,

  267. kind of muted lights,

  268. I'm a bright light guy.

  269. You know,

  270. when we go to the restaurant,

  271. I want to dial it up

  272. so I can see the food

  273. on the table.

  274. Judith wants it very dark.

  275. I'm suspicious about why

  276. you know,

  277. but God puts all kinds together

  278. and when VBS is doing its thing,

  279. all the parts matter.

  280. I mean,

  281. the artistic people

  282. are doing their thing

  283. and the musical people

  284. are doing their thing

  285. and the ones

  286. who can really get fired

  287. into teaching those Bible lessons

  288. are doing their thing

  289. and the organizational people,

  290. I mean,

  291. hey,

  292. do you know for a fact

  293. that every time

  294. we have VBS now,

  295. we pay attention

  296. to who has allergies.

  297. I don't have allergies,

  298. never thought about

  299. having allergies,

  300. wouldn't imagine

  301. that there are people

  302. that are allergic

  303. to dairy products,

  304. allergic to this thing

  305. and that thing

  306. and there was a lady

  307. who was coordinating

  308. all of that,

  309. aren't you glad?

  310. God,

  311. it's a good thing.

  312. You know,

  313. that's the body

  314. doing its thing,

  315. right?

  316. And by the way,

  317. when you say,

  318. well,

  319. I'm not going to do,

  320. I'm not going to be part of that,

  321. you know what,

  322. God will find somebody else.

  323. He does.

  324. Is it a good thing

  325. to mess with God

  326. and say,

  327. I'm not going to do my part?

  328. No.

  329. No.

  330. No,

  331. don't do that.

  332. Don't do that.

  333. Because you have

  334. that kind of attitude

  335. and he'll say,

  336. hey,

  337. go ahead,

  338. sit on the back bench.

  339. I'll find someone else.

  340. Not a good idea for you.

  341. And,

  342. you know,

  343. we think about this business,

  344. no duplicates,

  345. no unnecessary parts.

  346. God has a part

  347. for you to play

  348. and he wants you

  349. to get involved in it.

  350. And I got to tell you,

  351. being part of his team

  352. is far more important

  353. than fishing

  354. or playing ball.

  355. I think it's important

  356. for us to recognize.

  357. We live in a day and age

  358. where there are a lot of things

  359. that take the place

  360. and are a substitute

  361. for the bride of Christ.

  362. Now,

  363. I've been there with you.

  364. There are times

  365. when the appointment

  366. and divine call

  367. that God has given to me

  368. has been a little troublesome.

  369. You know,

  370. you may think

  371. being a pastor

  372. is all sweetness and light.

  373. And it is.

  374. I have said,

  375. you have heard me say this

  376. over and over again,

  377. I have the best job

  378. in the world.

  379. I will tell you,

  380. when I was called

  381. as a little boy

  382. about 12 years old,

  383. I didn't want to do it.

  384. And being the stubborn,

  385. perverse spirit

  386. that I am,

  387. I didn't only say

  388. I didn't want to do it,

  389. but I acted like

  390. I didn't want to do it.

  391. And guess what he did?

  392. He began

  393. kind of choreographing

  394. a lot of different details

  395. in my life

  396. that kept on

  397. just kind of

  398. putting the pressure on me

  399. until I finally said,

  400. yes, Lord.

  401. And a couple different times

  402. in the flow of ministering,

  403. we're talking about

  404. spiritual gifts

  405. because God gifted me

  406. to be a pastor.

  407. It wasn't a career decision,

  408. it was a calling.

  409. There have been some times

  410. where I have,

  411. I've thought to myself,

  412. I'm tired of doing this,

  413. I want to quit

  414. and go sell used cars

  415. or something like that.

  416. You know,

  417. do something reasonable.

  418. And that's when

  419. the Spirit of God

  420. kind of taps me

  421. on the shoulder

  422. and says,

  423. Tim,

  424. you're blood bought.

  425. You're a friar tried.

  426. You've been whacked

  427. all over the place

  428. by His grace.

  429. He's put up with you

  430. all these years.

  431. What do you think

  432. you're doing

  433. thinking about quitting?

  434. It's one thing

  435. to sing that song

  436. and by the way,

  437. I love it.

  438. His love never quits,

  439. never gives up,

  440. never runs out on me.

  441. Do you like that one?

  442. I love that one,

  443. but it doesn't have

  444. any heavy drum parts.

  445. It's just,

  446. I like the heavy drum parts,

  447. I gotta admit it.

  448. But you know what?

  449. Listen to me.

  450. It's one thing

  451. to sing the song.

  452. It's another thing

  453. to show that you

  454. understand that song

  455. by hanging in there

  456. when it's tough,

  457. by staying the course

  458. when ministry is hard,

  459. when people have

  460. broken your heart,

  461. and when you see

  462. the parts not

  463. always fitting together

  464. and you're frustrated

  465. by that.

  466. Lord, Lord, Lord,

  467. help it not overwhelm me.

  468. Well, look,

  469. we're looking at that passage

  470. in Ephesians,

  471. and I want you

  472. to recognize,

  473. going back to the text

  474. in Ephesians chapter 4,

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  475. that Paul is making

  476. this statement

  477. in the larger context

  478. of, hey,

  479. this is the body of Christ.

  480. And so we need

  481. to understand

  482. that every believer

  483. is given spiritual gifts

  484. for his glory

  485. and the bride's good.

  486. Being gifted,

  487. and every believer is,

  488. every believer is,

  489. being gifted is all

  490. about his glory

  491. and the good of others,

  492. and I'll throw this in,

  493. and your own connectedness.

  494. I believe the matter

  495. of his glory

  496. and the good of others

  497. is relatively easy to see.

  498. You can understand that.

  499. So let me just take

  500. a little moment

  501. to step over on the side

  502. and touch on

  503. one of the things

  504. that I,

  505. over the years of ministry,

  506. and I've got 30 plus

  507. of doing this now,

  508. so I'm not a newbie to it,

  509. but I've heard people

  510. on various times say,

  511. well, I'm not connecting,

  512. or I have no friends,

  513. or, you know,

  514. things like that,

  515. and one of the things

  516. that comes to my mind

  517. is this.

  518. One is from the Proverbs.

  519. Here's what it says,

  520. and we all know it,

  521. and you can say it

  522. with your eyes closed.

  523. If a man wants friends,

  524. he must be friendly.

  525. Well, I tried once.

  526. Really?

  527. You know?

  528. There are a lot of you

  529. who are married

  530. sitting out here this morning,

  531. and I tell you one thing

  532. about marriage

  533. is that I guarantee you

  534. the first person

  535. who said no to you

  536. probably didn't end up

  537. being your wife

  538. or your husband.

  539. You kept on pursuing.

  540. If you want it bad enough,

  541. guess what you're going to do?

  542. You're going to make it happen.

  543. Everybody said amen, right?

  544. Say it loud.

  545. I mean,

  546. be ugly Baptists

  547. about this thing.

  548. Amen!

  549. Amen!

  550. Okay, I'm sorry.

  551. Amen!

  552. No, thank you.

  553. It's all right.

  554. Some of you are in

  555. for culture shock

  556. when we get to heaven,

  557. so if you want to have friends,

  558. be a friend.

  559. Okay, now listen

  560. to the second point.

  561. If you take the gifts

  562. you've received

  563. and invest them in the body,

  564. connections happen.

  565. If you take the gifts

  566. you've received

  567. and use them in the body,

  568. connections happen.

  569. Amen!

  570. Listen to me.

  571. If I walked home

  572. this afternoon

  573. and said,

  574. listen,

  575. I am done

  576. being pastor.

  577. I quit.

  578. Your relationship

  579. with me

  580. would change.

  581. For one,

  582. because it would be,

  583. everybody look up

  584. and smile right at me,

  585. look me in the eyes.

  586. For one,

  587. it would be

  588. because that would be

  589. tacit,

  590. open,

  591. rebellion

  592. against the gifting

  593. of God

  594. in Tim Kenoyer's life.

  595. Do you understand that?

  596. Oh,

  597. is Tim Kenoyer

  598. a different kind

  599. of saint than you?

  600. And the answer is,

  601. not on your life.

  602. So if I was gifted

  603. for your sake,

  604. you were gifted

  605. for our sake.

  606. And you need to get

  607. that in your mind.

  608. Well,

  609. I don't like

  610. some of the people

  611. that God has here.

  612. You're one of them.

  613. Well,

  614. and I have trouble getting,

  615. you know,

  616. here's one of the things

  617. I've come to realize.

  618. The biggest problem

  619. I have in life

  620. is me.

  621. And as I submit

  622. and let God work at me,

  623. I,

  624. strangely enough,

  625. get along better with you.

  626. Well,

  627. we are who we are

  628. and have what we have

  629. because of His sovereign grace

  630. and purpose.

  631. And we,

  632. we're each individuals

  633. uniquely created

  634. and gifted by His grace

  635. for His glory

  636. and His good

  637. and for the good of the body.

  638. And so,

  639. here's the point

  640. of this truth.

  641. Get with it

  642. and do what you're gifted to do.

  643. And so,

  644. there's some of you

  645. sitting out here saying,

  646. well,

  647. I don't know

  648. what my gift is.

  649. Here's,

  650. here's what will be

  651. the giveaway

  652. of helping you find out

  653. what your gift is.

  654. Just show up and say,

  655. what can I do?

  656. I'll do anything.

  657. What can I do?

  658. I'll do anything.

  659. And over a period of time,

  660. God will use

  661. your willingness

  662. to be used

  663. by the Spirit of God

  664. to put you into

  665. the slot

  666. and place

  667. He has for you.

  668. You find people

  669. who are always

  670. walking around

  671. and say,

  672. well,

  673. I have the gift

  674. of administration

  675. but nobody

  676. lets me practice it.

  677. There might be a reason

  678. why they don't

  679. let you practice it.

  680. You're so full of yourself

  681. that you want to run

  682. the show

  683. kind of like

  684. the,

  685. you know,

  686. chief potentate

  687. and God's interested

  688. in those who are servants

  689. not those who are,

  690. you know,

  691. slave masters.

  692. You know,

  693. you want to find out

  694. what your gift is?

  695. Get involved.

  696. Get involved.

  697. Well,

  698. let's come to another part.

  699. I don't know how much time

  700. I have but I got plenty.

  701. Here we go.

  702. This is a very interesting

  703. thing that happens.

  704. You know,

  705. verse 7,

  706. Paul just kind of

  707. hits the button

  708. of spiritual gifts.

  709. That's what he does.

  710. And then he comes

  711. towards the end

  712. in verse 7.

  713. Come on,

  714. follow along with this issue.

  715. He says,

  716. but grace was given

  717. to each of us

  718. according to the measure

  719. of Christ's gift.

  720. And when Paul

  721. is appointed

  722. by the Spirit of God

  723. to use that

  724. C word,

  725. which is what?

  726. Christ?

  727. Every time he thinks

  728. about Jesus,

  729. he launches.

  730. Do you follow

  731. what I mean by launches?

  732. It's like,

  733. ah,

  734. this is about Jesus.

  735. Well,

  736. let me tell you

  737. what I'm thinking

  738. about right now.

  739. And he steps off

  740. in there.

  741. Now,

  742. by the way,

  743. the Spirit of God

  744. is leading him here

  745. but it is interesting.

  746. It's a little bit like

  747. thinking about Jesus

  748. just kind of

  749. fires

  750. Paul up.

  751. Therefore,

  752. it says,

  753. when he ascended

  754. on high,

  755. he led a host

  756. of captives

  757. and he gave gifts

  758. to men.

  759. A little sidebar

  760. on this

  761. that I want

  762. to be characteristic

  763. of this fellowship

  764. in the days to come.

  765. I pray,

  766. I do,

  767. and I'm probably

  768. overbearing

  769. on the subject

  770. a little bit

  771. but when we think

  772. about things,

  773. I want us to think

  774. about things textually.

  775. Do you follow that?

  776. That's what Paul

  777. does here.

  778. He stops

  779. and he gets

  780. bumped with this

  781. idea of Christ

  782. and then he

  783. connects it

  784. to a passage

  785. in the Old Testament.

  786. So,

  787. kind of for the sake

  788. of practice,

  789. when we're singing,

  790. what do I want you

  791. to do?

  792. What does God

  793. want you to do?

  794. He wants you

  795. to cross-reference

  796. songs with what?

  797. With Scripture.

  798. He wants you

  799. to cross-reference

  800. everything you do

  801. and every thought

  802. you have

  803. against the text

  804. of Scripture.

  805. Amen?

  806. And one of the things

  807. I've said

  808. is the characteristic

  809. of a growing believer

  810. is that the gap

  811. between when he thinks

  812. the thought

  813. and when the Scripture

  814. comes to his aid,

  815. the narrowing

  816. of that gap

  817. is an indication

  818. of his progressive

  819. sanctification.

  820. Would you agree

  821. with that?

  822. And so,

  823. you can sit there

  824. and say,

  825. how am I doing

  826. to growing?

  827. Well,

  828. I sit there

  829. and talk to myself.

  830. Tim,

  831. that's a dumb idea.

  832. That's not good.

  833. The Holy Spirit

  834. is not obligated

  835. to use my self-talk.

  836. Do you understand that?

  837. The Holy Spirit

  838. is obligated

  839. to use the Spirit of God

  840. and the Word of God

  841. to do the job.

  842. So,

  843. when I say to myself,

  844. here's what the text

  845. says about Tim,

  846. this is what the Bible says.

  847. It's like,

  848. oh,

  849. I got that.

  850. That's how you get there.

  851. So,

  852. we have Paul

  853. thinks about Jesus

  854. and then launches in

  855. and he has this thought

  856. that makes it very clear

  857. that we are gifted

  858. because of his victory.

  859. Why is it

  860. that Jesus has the right

  861. to give us gifts?

  862. We find there

  863. in verses 8,

  864. 9,

  865. and 10

  866. a very clear exposition

  867. of the fact

  868. that the reason

  869. we have the gifts

  870. that we have

  871. is because Christ

  872. is the one

  873. who has won

  874. the victory for us.

  875. Now,

  876. Paul could have spoken

  877. in this case

  878. about gifts

  879. without getting

  880. into the Old Testament,

  881. but it's an illustration

  882. that when we think

  883. about things,

  884. we think scripturally,

  885. we think about

  886. something in the Scriptures

  887. that affirm

  888. and confirm a matter.

  889. And so,

  890. what Paul is doing

  891. in this case

  892. is he is relying

  893. upon a victory psalm

  894. that David wrote

  895. over in Psalm 68.

  896. We're not going

  897. to look at it

  898. in detail

  899. because I don't think

  900. it has primary bearing

  901. on where we are

  902. this morning,

  903. but I want you

  904. to understand

  905. that he takes

  906. that passage

  907. from Psalm 68

  908. and particularly

  909. verse 18,

  910. which Paul uses here,

  911. and he uses it

  912. to reference

  913. what was an ancient practice.

  914. When a king

  915. had been victorious

  916. in battle,

  917. he walked into

  918. his city

  919. with his soldiers

  920. in the victory march,

  921. but he also walked in

  922. with the pile of loot

  923. and booty.

  924. How many of you

  925. understand?

  926. In the old days,

  927. you didn't carry

  928. a MasterCard.

  929. Whatever you owned

  930. when you were going away

  931. on a long trip,

  932. what you didn't need

  933. to leave behind

  934. for your wife and fam,

  935. you took with you.

  936. And so,

  937. when there was a battle

  938. and there was a victory,

  939. the one who,

  940. have you ever heard

  941. the statement,

  942. to the victor go the spoils?

  943. You guys are well-versed.

  944. History is something

  945. you understand.

  946. To the victor go the spoils.

  947. And so,

  948. into the city

  949. would come striding

  950. the victorious king,

  951. and behind him

  952. would come his soldiers

  953. marching along,

  954. you know,

  955. and they're showing

  956. their battle wounds,

  957. and hey,

  958. we won.

  959. And right behind

  960. would come ox cart

  961. after ox cart loaded

  962. with, you know,

  963. gold cups

  964. and bags of coins,

  965. and the king

  966. in his generosity

  967. would walk into town

  968. and he would throw

  969. those things

  970. at his subjects.

  971. It was his right.

  972. And Paul says,

  973. let me tell you something.

  974. When he ascended

  975. on high,

  976. he led a host

  977. of captives,

  978. and he gave gifts

  979. to men.

  980. Now,

  981. we look at this passage

  982. in verse 9.

  983. It says,

  984. in saying he ascended,

  985. what does it mean

  986. but that he had also

  987. descended

  988. to the lower regions?

  989. It's interesting

  990. to read

  991. the diversity

  992. of speculations

  993. on this passage.

  994. And I do call

  995. them speculations

  996. because there is

  997. no clear indication

  998. in the scripture

  999. of what is meant.

  1000. Some have

  1001. fancied

  1002. that this refers

  1003. to Christ's descent

  1004. into the grave

  1005. and his rising

  1006. in the resurrection.

  1007. Others have

  1008. understood

  1009. this to mean

  1010. that Christ

  1011. descended into hell

  1012. during his three days

  1013. in the grave,

  1014. and there are

  1015. some very animated

  1016. disputes

  1017. over what

  1018. this passage

  1019. actually means.

  1020. And animated

  1021. disputes generally

  1022. are over passages

  1023. where there isn't

  1024. a clear and

  1025. definitive

  1026. understanding.

  1027. I would

  1028. believe

  1029. that this is

  1030. talking simply

  1031. about the words

  1032. themselves

  1033. and are

  1034. relatively clear.

  1035. It says there

  1036. that he descended

  1037. and he ascended.

  1038. And I think

  1039. that refers to

  1040. our Lord Jesus

  1041. coming here to earth

  1042. and going up again.

  1043. In broad terms,

1044. I do want to take

  1045. advantage of this

  1046. kind of

  1047. difficult passage

  1048. to lay out

  1049. a couple principles

  1050. of scriptural

  1051. interpretation

  1052. so you can do

  1053. that on your own.

  1054. And that's my purpose.

  1055. Listen,

1056. let me make this point.

  1057. We understand

  1058. that scripture

  1059. is understandable.

  1060. Would you agree

  1061. with that?

  1062. God gave us

  1063. his word

  1064. for the average

  1065. person

  1066. to understand it.

  1067. Agreed?

  1068. You don't

  1069. have to be

  1070. ordained,

  1071. stamped on the

  1072. head,

  1073. to have a little

  1074. extra spiritual

  1075. insight so I can

  1076. automatically,

  1077. I don't know

  1078. what this means

  1079. but let me ask

  1080. the pastor.

  1081. No, no, no.

  1082. Get it yourself.

  1083. God means for you

  1084. to get it yourself.

  1085. That's the reason

  1086. that evangelicals

  1087. have been such

  1088. advocates for

  1089. reading

  1090. and for

  1091. having your own

  1092. Bible

  1093. and translation.

  1094. God intends

  1095. for us to

  1096. understand it.

  1097. So here are a

  1098. couple principles

  1099. for Bible

  1100. interpretation.

  1101. Number one,

  1102. rely on scripture

  1103. to interpret

  1104. scripture using

  1105. the actual

  1106. vocabulary and

  1107. grammar of the

  1108. text.

  1109. You want to

  1110. understand what's

  1111. being said?

  1112. Look in the

  1113. Bible.

  1114. Don't ever say,

  1115. well I was having

  1116. difficulty with this

  1117. pastor and I went

  1118. to pastor and he

  1119. explained it to me

  1120. and I don't know

  1121. how he got there

  1122. but he explained it.

  1123. And so the pastor

  1124. said it's not a good

  1125. answer to what you

  1126. believe about the

  1127. Bible.

  1128. Everybody said what?

  1129. Amen.

  1130. Okay.

  1131. Number two,

  1132. here's a little

  1133. ditty.

  1134. If the plain sense

  1135. makes good sense,

  1136. seek no other sense.

  1137. I'll say that slowly.

  1138. If the plain sense

  1139. makes good sense,

  1140. seek no other sense.

  1141. In other words,

  1142. if it's obvious,

  1143. stick with what's

  1144. obvious.

  1145. I'm not into

  1146. kind of getting

  1147. things all wigged

  1148. out here on

  1149. the side.

  1150. And by the way,

  1151. I was a literature

  1152. major.

  1153. I can do that

  1154. left-handed.

  1155. But the Bible

  1156. is designed

  1157. for clarity.

  1158. Okay?

  1159. And so Paul,

  1160. in this passage,

  1161. I think in simple

  1162. terms,

  1163. is lifting up

  1164. the glory of

  1165. Christ by

  1166. pointing out

  1167. his humiliation

  1168. and then pointing

  1169. out his

  1170. ascension.

  1171. And the Savior

  1172. who gives us

  1173. salvation

  1174. salvation and

  1175. our gifts

  1176. is the same

  1177. one who

  1178. was willing

  1179. to be humiliated

  1180. and die for us

  1181. and rise again.

  1182. And it follows

  1183. then that the

  1184. same Jesus

  1185. who was willing

  1186. to humble himself

  1187. even to death

  1188. on the cross

  1189. and be our

  1190. sin bearer,

  1191. understandably,

  1192. should be exalted.

  1193. Now,

1194. I want you to turn

  1195. with me just over

  1196. to another passage

  1197. just for a second.

  1198. Colossians chapter 2

    Colossians 2:13–15

  1199. verse 13 through 15.

  1200. Colossians chapter 2

    Colossians 2:13–15

  1201. verse 13 through 15.

  1202. As you think about

  1203. what is being said

  1204. here at the end

  1205. of Ephesians

    Ephesians 4:10

  1206. chapter 4

  1207. verse 10

  1208. where it talks about

  1209. that he would fill

  1210. all in all.

1211. Listen to what it says

  1212. there in Colossians

    Colossians 2 chapter mention

  1213. chapter 2.

  1214. And you who were

  1215. dead in your trespasses

  1216. and the uncircumcision

  1217. of your flesh

  1218. God made alive

  1219. together with him

  1220. having forgiven us

  1221. all of our trespasses.

  1222. Hey,

1223. how much of your sin

  1224. does God remember still?

  1225. None.

  1226. There is now therefore

  1227. what?

  1228. No condemnation.

1229. And listen to me carefully.

  1230. I will sin tomorrow.

  1231. But Christ has already

  1232. satisfied my debt

  1233. and the reality

  1234. of my sin

  1235. has been covered

  1236. by his blood

  1237. and I am forever

  1238. cleansed

  1239. and righteous

  1240. in his eyes.

  1241. You want to know

  1242. why I love Jesus?

  1243. It's because

  1244. he did it all.

  1245. He did it all.

  1246. verse 13.

  1247. And you who were

  1248. dead in your

  1249. trespasses

  1250. and the uncircumcision

  1251. of your flesh

  1252. God made alive

  1253. together with him

  1254. having forgiven us

  1255. all our trespasses

  1256. by canceling

  1257. the record

  1258. of the debt

  1259. that stood against us

  1260. with its legal demands

1261. and this he set aside

  1262. nailing it

  1263. on the cross.

  1264. Now,

  1265. that's an image

  1266. I like.

  1267. How many of you

  1268. have ever paid off

  1269. a car?

  1270. Raise your hands.

1271. What comes in the mail

  1272. when you get your

  1273. car paid off?

  1274. A title.

  1275. That's a big thing

  1276. even if the thing

  1277. has 190,000 miles

  1278. on it.

  1279. It's yours.

  1280. It's not yours

  1281. in the bank.

  1282. Right?

  1283. That's a good feeling.

  1284. Better than the title

1285. that comes in the mail

  1286. is what this verse

  1287. is describing.

  1288. In the ancient culture

  1289. a debtor

  1290. was someone

  1291. who could be

  1292. thrown in prison

  1293. who could be mistreated

  1294. and abused

  1295. for his debt.

  1296. And when a debt

  1297. was canceled

  1298. the record

  1299. of that canceled debt

  1300. was taken

  1301. and nailed

  1302. in a public place

  1303. so everybody knew

  1304. he's not a debtor

  1305. anymore.

  1306. And what this says

  1307. is that Jesus

  1308. took the record

  1309. of your sins

  1310. and he put it

  1311. on the cross

1312. and he nailed it there.

  1313. He said paid,

  1314. paid, paid, paid,

  1315. paid in full.

1316. And so I want you

  1317. to recognize

  1318. that when he came

  1319. down to this earth

  1320. and he bowed down

  1321. upon the cross

1322. and he took the burden

  1323. of our sins

  1324. and he died

  1325. and suffered

  1326. in our place

  1327. and rose again

  1328. in triumph

  1329. and purchased

  1330. our redemption

1331. and he has the right

  1332. to call us

  1333. to be his servants.

  1334. Doesn't he?

  1335. Doesn't he?

  1336. He does.

1337. And you have no business

1338. Now let me say that again

  1339. this way.

  1340. I have no business

  1341. being gifted

1342. by the Spirit of God

  1343. and being worked on

  1344. all these years

  1345. I have no right

  1346. to say

  1347. well I don't like

  1348. working here anymore.

  1349. That would be

  1350. profoundly selfish

  1351. and actually

  1352. it would be

  1353. retrograde spirituality.

  1354. What do I mean

  1355. by retrograde spirituality?

  1356. Backsliding.

  1357. Do you understand that?

  1358. If I can't pull that off

  1359. with righteousness

  1360. can anybody

1361. who's part of the body

  1362. of Christ

1363. and the bride of Christ

  1364. do that?

  1365. And what's the answer?

  1366. No!

  1367. And Paul argues

  1368. Paul argues

  1369. for believers

  1370. being invested

  1371. in the bride

  1372. of Christ.

  1373. So here's my

  1374. practical questions

  1375. as I close.

  1376. What you doing?

  1377. You're gifted.

  1378. What you doing?

  1379. Here's another question.

  1380. Do you know him?

1381. You can't go to work

1382. if you don't know him.

  1383. If you're not part

  1384. of his family

  1385. if you're not part

  1386. of the team

1387. you don't ride the bus.

  1388. Years ago

  1389. I coached soccer

  1390. and providentially

  1391. I learned something

1392. if you have the horses

1393. you can win the races.

  1394. Now that's a little

  1395. tricky statement

  1396. for the fact

1397. that we did fairly well.

  1398. We did real well.

  1399. I can't take a lot

  1400. of credit for it

1401. because we had the horses.

  1402. And you know what?

1403. Riding on the team bus

  1404. was a real...

  1405. We went 18-1-1

  1406. one year.

1407. We were a little school

  1408. of about 300.

  1409. We actually went

  1410. to the state playoffs

  1411. in North Carolina.

1412. And riding on that bus

  1413. was kind of like

  1414. being in the kingdom.

1415. I mean it was really...

1416. We got fired up going.

1417. We got fired up coming.

  1418. And every time

  1419. we came back

  1420. to the school

  1421. to let out

  1422. there was a crowd

  1423. there to greet us.

  1424. And when we were

  1425. making the last turn

  1426. coming in towards

  1427. where the crowd

  1428. was waiting for us

  1429. that bus was rocking.

1430. Here's what we were singing.

  1431. Na-na-na-na.

  1432. We were doing that.

  1433. And the bus

  1434. was just like booming.

  1435. It was really weird.

  1436. Nobody rode that bus

  1437. but the team.

  1438. Do you follow me?

  1439. I'll tell you

1440. if I had looked around

  1441. I was a coach.

  1442. If I'd looked around

  1443. on that team

  1444. and I'd seen some

  1445. of the grumpy faces

  1446. sitting out there

  1447. I don't happen

  1448. to like Steve Smith

  1449. even though

  1450. he's our only goalie.

  1451. It's just that

  1452. he's got a bad heart.

  1453. And I don't happen

  1454. to like Gary Hall

  1455. because I just

  1456. don't like him.

  1457. Whack!

  1458. What's your problem?

  1459. We're part of this

  1460. team together, right?

  1461. You got me?

  1462. I've often said

  1463. I want one thing

  1464. written on my grave

1465. and that would be this

  1466. what sayeth the scriptures?

  1467. I'll add another one.

  1468. I loved the bride

  1469. of Christ.

  1470. I want that remembered.

  1471. This passage

  1472. is about the bride

  1473. of Christ.

  1474. Let's close

  1475. as John comes.

  1476. As John is coming

  1477. we're going to sing

  1478. together this morning.

  1479. I don't know

  1480. let's stand together

  1481. would you please?

1482. And I got to tell you

  1483. that the purpose

  1484. of preaching

1485. is not to entertain you

1486. but it's to put you

  1487. on the spot

1488. of saying yes or no

  1489. to God.

  1490. And there may be

  1491. some of you here

  1492. that need Christ

  1493. as your personal savior.

  1494. I don't know your soul.

  1495. That's not my business.

  1496. But today

  1497. we've been talking

1498. about the family of God

  1499. we've been talking

  1500. about the church

  1501. and it may be

  1502. that you're sitting here

  1503. saying man

  1504. I don't know him.

  1505. I don't want you

  1506. to leave here

  1507. without coming to Christ.

  1508. And that is

  1509. a profoundly humbling thing

  1510. because the gospel

  1511. first of all

  1512. makes it clear

  1513. that we are sinners

  1514. condemned before

  1515. a holy God.

  1516. And the gospel

  1517. tells us

  1518. that Christ came

1519. to die for our sins.

  1520. and the gospel

  1521. tells us

  1522. that whosoever

  1523. calls upon the name

  1524. of the Lord

  1525. shall be saved.

  1526. That's humbling.

  1527. There may be

  1528. some of you here

1529. that truth of the matter

1530. is there is a lot

  1531. of spiritual turmoil

  1532. there's some bitterness

  1533. there's some dissatisfaction

  1534. you found yourself

  1535. being drawn away

  1536. from being part

1537. of what God is doing

  1538. you've given in.

  1539. God says stop it.

  1540. You can take care

1541. of that where you sit.

1542. Or you can humble yourself

  1543. and say

  1544. God's dealing with me

  1545. I want God's people

1546. who are part of the family

  1547. to know

  1548. I rededicate myself

1549. to the bride of Christ

  1550. until he comes

  1551. and takes me home.

  1552. I'm with it.

  1553. There may be

  1554. somebody here

  1555. that need Christ

  1556. you come forward

  1557. you may be here

  1558. and you need someone

  1559. to pray with you

1560. you come as John leads us

  1561. as we sing.

  1562. You're ending us

  1563. ending us

  1564. ending us

  1565. ending us

  1566. ending us

  1567. ending us

  1568. ending us

  1569. ending us

  1570. ending us

  1571. ending us
