  1. First, let me thank the ladies for doing that little part that goes along.

  2. ! How many of you like that? I just absolutely love it.

  3. ! I mean, I get cold chills on a lot of different things.

  4. That's one of them. It's just like, wow!

  5. That's a blessing.

  6. Open your Bibles this morning to Ephesians chapter 4, verse 11.

    Ephesians 4:11

  7. Let me read the passage, and then you join me in prayer.

  8. And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers.

  9. Father God, this morning as we take your word and we hold it in our hands and we put our eyes upon this text,

  10. we're reminded of what it says in 1 Corinthians chapter 2,

    1 Corinthians 2 chapter mention

  11. that we need the enabling of the Spirit of God to understand these truths,

  12. to revel in them,

  13. to rejoice in your goodness,

  14. in the wisdom and plan that you ordained,

  15. not only in saving us, but in putting us together into a body

  16. that we,

  17. as a body under the headship of Christ,

  18. should bring glory to the Son.

  19. and we're thankful that not only did you put that plan in place,

  20. but Lord, you also have chosen to reveal it to us in your word

  21. that we, your children,

  22. being well informed by the Scriptures and enabled by the Spirit,

  23. may know the joy

  24. that comes with being part of your body

  25. and part of your plan,

  26. actively engaged for your glory

  27. and looking forward to every opportunity

  28. where the name and testimony of Christ

  29. might be lifted up.

  30. Father, we ask that as we study the Scriptures this morning,

  31. that you would be pleased with the attention of our heart

  32. and then the outcome of we,

  33. who are your children growing in grace,

  34. and those who are here that do not know Christ,

  35. we ask, Lord, that they would be drawn to the cross.

  36. And that's our prayer together.

  37. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  38. Amen.

  39. Let me begin by giving you a little bit of an overview this morning

  40. of what our text is going to address.

  41. We find that Ephesians chapter 4 is an extended passage.

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  42. Actually, Ephesians chapter 4, verse 1 through 16

    Ephesians 4:1–16

  43. is an extended passage in which the apostle wants us to understand

  44. how important unity is in the body of Christ.

  45. You'll remember that Ephesians chapter 1 through 3

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  46. explains what Christ has done in saving us

  47. and then Ephesians chapter 4 through 6 explain what we are to do

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  48. as a result of our salvation.

  49. He saves us.

  50. He draws us together for His glory

  51. and He then expects us to walk in such a fashion

  52. that He is the one that is exalted and glorified in that.

  53. And it's very interesting that at the very beginning when Paul then launches into this explanation of,

  54. all right, since you've been saved, how are you to live?

  55. The first thing that he comes up with is not,

  56. well, here's what your haircut's supposed to be like

  57. or here's how you're supposed to wear a tie.

  58. He starts out by saying,

  59. you who are part of the family of God are to be united.

  60. And when we stop and really think about it,

  61. that issue of unity has legs to it.

  62. And what I mean by that is that it has a long history

  63. because from the very beginning,

  64. when sin entered the garden,

  65. division and separation and distance from one another

  66. was the first outcome of sin,

  67. at least publicly.

  68. And so we can understand why,

  69. in keeping with that pattern that we find there in Genesis,

  70. that the first interest of the Spirit of God

  71. is that we who are His people understand

  72. the priority and the significance of the matter of unity.

  73. And so as we looked here at our lesson,

  74. we find out earlier as we've studied

  75. that He puts us together

  76. and He puts us under His headship

  77. and then He gifts us.

  78. And we're going to take a couple minutes here

  79. and talk about the overview of gifts

  80. and then we're going to deal in greater detail

  81. with verse 11 that touches on servant gifts.

  82. My primary objective this morning

  83. in talking about the issue of gifts

  84. is not to go deeply into it

  85. because that would take me into the 12s and the 4s.

  86. How many of you remember what I said last week?

  87. I'm sure you do.

  88. That it's easy to track down where spiritual gifts are

  89. because they're stuck with the 12s and 4s.

  90. We find it in Romans chapter 12.

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  91. We find it in 1 Corinthians chapter 12.

    1 Corinthians 12 chapter mention

  92. We find it in Ephesians chapter 4.

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  93. And we find it in 1 Peter chapter 4.

    1 Peter 4 chapter mention

  94. And so as you look at the broad picture of spiritual gifts,

  95. we're not going to take the details together,

  96. but we do want to pay attention to the broader look.

  97. And we find that there are actually three different categories

  98. of spiritual gifts in the New Testament.

  99. There are temporary sign gifts,

  100. such as miracles, prophetic utterances, and tongues.

  101. And I'm fully persuaded that the purpose of those sign gifts

  102. was undeniably so that the ministry of the Word

  103. or the message could undeniably articulate it

  104. and clearly understood by people.

  105. I'm in the process of reading through the book of John

  106. over and over again by way of preparation

  107. for eventually, Lord willing, teaching it here.

  108. And one of the things that I've been struck by

  109. is how many times after Jesus performed a miracle,

  110. He said, hey, this miracle is there as a testimony of who I am.

  111. And in the Scriptures, as you look at the subject

  112. of temporary sign gifts, you recognize that they came along

  113. at particular times when the message was something

  114. that needed to be articulated in a very clear and persuasive way

  115. in a particular setting, and it happened.

  116. During the time of Moses, during the time of two of the main prophets,

  117. and then during the New Testament time,

  118. during the time of Jesus and the apostles.

  119. We understand, secondly, that there are permanent service gifts,

  120. and those are the ones that we note in Romans chapter 12

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  121. and 1 Corinthians chapter 12.

    1 Corinthians 12 chapter mention

  122. There are gifts that are given to individuals in the body,

  123. and I recognize the Scriptures make it clear

  124. that when a person comes to Christ,

  125. they are given specific gifts for service.

  126. They're things that are given to you so that you can be,

  127. you have a place, you have a part,

  128. you have a role in the body of Christ,

  129. and there's no such thing, theologically speaking anyway.

  130. Now, what do I mean by theologically speaking?

  131. In other words, the Scripture doesn't see

  132. disconnected floaters in church.

  133. It's like, hey, you are given this gift,

  134. and His intention is that you actively employ that gift

  135. in doing something in the body of Christ.

  136. There's no intention in Christ's heart for unemployed saints.

  137. You're gifted, and you're called to use that in the body.

  138. Permanent service gifts are part of what help us together

  139. do the work of Christ so that Christ is glorified.

  140. And we do better together than we do alone.

  141. Do you understand that?

  142. Perfect illustration would be when I,

  143. this morning I'm sitting over here on the front

  144. and just listening to that little part

  145. where the men sing their part and then the women.

  146. And I'm just thinking, so what if the women decided,

  147. well, I'm not doing that today?

  148. What would happen in the mind of the average guy

  149. when he's kind of waiting for that lovely, light little,

  150. and I've got an attitude today,

  151. and I'm not going to serve Christ by singing my part.

  152. And I was like, what is your problem?

  153. Would you agree with me, guys?

  154. You'd nudge your wife and say, get with it, do your thing.

  155. That's part of the role of a pastor is, you know,

  156. saying to dear saints, get with it, do your thing, right?

  157. So permanent service gifts are there to minister

  158. to the glory of Christ in one another.

  159. Well, then there's a third little category of servant gifts,

  160. and that is actually service gifts.

  161. There's a third category of gifts.

  162. It is the servant gift, and that is what we are looking at

  163. in Ephesians 4, verse 11.

    Ephesians 4:11

  164. Paul, as he's writing to the body,

  165. talking about the fact that they are to be united

  166. into the body of Christ,

  167. and they are to use their gifts for God's glory,

  168. he also reminds them,

  169. I have given you individuals to help you with that.

  170. And that's what we're going to focus on here.

  171. As we get into the lesson,

  172. one of the things that I want you to mark

  173. at the very beginning in verse 11,

  174. it says,

  175. he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists,

  176. the shepherds and teachers.

  177. And so what we understand is that verse 11 is about servants

  178. given to the church by his direct will

  179. and for his purposes.

  180. Just as the service gifts discussed in Romans 12

  181. and 1 Corinthians 12

  182. are given according to divine choice

  183. and grace for the body's sake,

  184. so those that he appoints to be servants in the body

  185. are gifts that are given directly by him.

  186. His servants, and I think it's important to remember

  187. and understand,

  188. are really tokens of his love

  189. and evidences of his care.

  190. In the larger context,

  191. when you think about the things

  192. that Christ has given to us,

  193. we recognize that those gifts

  194. are things that indicate his grace

  195. and indicate his love.

  196. I'll never forget,

  197. one of the books that I read as a young pastor

  198. was a book called

  199. The Christian Ministry by Charles Bridges

  200. written by a Puritan.

  201. And in the flow of that book,

  202. he made the comment

  203. that a pastor is to be a living illustration

  204. of the love of Christ.

  205. And when individuals ask themselves

  206. that practical question,

  207. how do I know that Jesus loves me?

  208. One of the thoughts that they should think

  209. if a pastor is doing his work

  210. is they should think,

  211. I know Jesus loves me

  212. because my pastor is an illustration of it.

  213. I want you to look over in your Bibles

  214. just for a moment to 1 Corinthians chapter 13.

    1 Corinthians 13 chapter mention

  215. 1 Corinthians chapter 13 identifies

    1 Corinthians 13 chapter mention

  216. that we can be pretty brilliant,

  217. we can be pretty successful,

  218. we can be pretty significant,

  219. but without love,

  220. we are really not meeting the standard

  221. that God has set.

  222. 1 Corinthians chapter 13,

    1 Corinthians 13 chapter mention

  223. If I speak with the tongues of men

  224. and of angels but do not have love,

  225. I'm a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.

  226. How many of you do not like it

  227. when your car alarm goes off?

  228. Or try it this way,

  229. when somebody else in the neighborhood's

  230. car alarm goes off,

  231. bam, bam, bam,

  232. and you're thinking what?

  233. Get out there and fix it.

  234. Well, here's what it says.

  235. If I speak with the tongues of men

  236. and of angels and I do not have love,

  237. I am an irritating car alarm.

  238. If I have prophetic powers

  239. and understand all mysteries

  240. and all knowledge

  241. and I have all faith

  242. so as to remove mountains

  243. but do not have love,

  244. I'm nothing.

  245. I'm irrelevant.

  246. And I think it's important for us

  247. to recognize that

  248. you may be excellent at this or that

  249. or the other thing,

  250. but here's the thing

  251. that is the gold standard of ministry.

  252. It is a genuine love

  253. for those who God has called you to care for.

  254. Is that something that happens naturally

  255. in any person's heart?

  256. What's the answer?

  257. Not at all.

  258. It is the work of grace

  259. and the power of His Spirit

  260. working to mold and shape a person's heart

  261. that He cares and genuinely has an affection

  262. for those who God's called Him

  263. to be a shepherd to.

  264. Allow me to make one more comment

  265. about those that are called

  266. to be gifted servants of the bride.

  267. Each of the offices

  268. that we are going to look at here

  269. and go back to Ephesians chapter 4 verse 11,

    Ephesians 4:11

  270. each of these offices

  271. have one particular thing in common

  272. and I want you to pay attention

  273. to that particular thing.

  274. The apostle, the prophet,

  275. the evangelist, shepherds and teachers

  276. all are directly connected to the Word.

  277. Each office is directly connected

  278. to the proclamation

  279. and to the teaching of the Word.

  280. Each office calls for a dependence upon the Word

  281. and a submission to the Word.

  282. At the heart of what God calls

  283. each individual to do

  284. in the pastoral ministry

  285. and in any of the offices

  286. that are spoken of here,

  287. it is to depend upon His Word

  288. and to speak it with clarity

  289. and with persuasion.

  290. I am reminded of several different passages

  291. that make the matter of the significance

  292. of the Word a priority

  293. both in the Old Testament

  294. and in the New Testament.

  295. I want you to think with me

  296. just for a moment

  297. of one of the illustrations

  298. that we find over in Deuteronomy chapter 17

    Deuteronomy 17:18

  299. verse 18.

  300. Deuteronomy chapter 17 verse 18.

    Deuteronomy 17:18

  301. You don't need to turn to it,

  302. make a reference and go to it later.

  303. But in Deuteronomy chapter 17, 18,

    Deuteronomy 17 chapter mention

  304. Moses is speaking to the nation of Israel.

  305. He says, listen, when the day comes

  306. that you have a king,

  307. one of the things that I want the king to do

  308. is I want him to make a handwritten copy

  309. of the law

  310. and he is to keep it by him

  311. and he is to rely upon the law

  312. so that he follows the law.

  313. It is the law ultimately

  314. that reigns in a person's life

  315. and reigns in a nation

  316. otherwise we are drifting into the abyss.

  317. The other passage that I often recite to myself

  318. is over in Malachi chapter 2 verse 7

    Malachi 2:7

  319. and I want you to turn there just for a moment

  320. when you stop and think about

  321. what you ought to hear from any man

  322. who ever stands behind this pulpit.

  323. It is the word of God.

  324. Look at Malachi chapter 2 verse 7.

    Malachi 2:7

  325. You may want to underline it.

  326. How many of you have this underlined in your Bible?

  327. I hope you do.

  328. I would encourage you to underline it.

  329. I'll never forget.

  330. Well, this is a story I tell on myself.

  331. I'll never forget being part of a church

  332. that was going through the process

  333. of calling a pastor

  334. and one of the candidates came up to the pulpit

  335. and brought with him

  336. a stack of about seven different books.

  337. He had the Bible tucked in there somewhere

  338. but he kept on making reference to this book,

  339. that book, the other book

  340. and so where's the word?

  341. Where's the word?

  342. Where's the word?

  343. You look here in Malachi chapter 2 verse 7

    Malachi 2:7

  344. and it spells out

  345. what you are to hear from a pastor's mouth.

  346. For the lips of the priest should guard knowledge

  347. and people should seek instruction from his mouth.

  348. Now here's the part.

  349. For he is the, what?

  350. Messenger of the Lord of hosts.

  351. He is the one responsible for giving God's message.

  352. How many of you know what God's message is?

  353. How many of you know what God's message is?

  354. It happens to be between the covers of the Bible.

  355. If I came to you and said,

  356. God said and I didn't give you a passage and a reference,

  357. you know what you ought to think?

  358. Where's a rock?

  359. Okay.

  360. Now you probably give me a break and say,

  361. Pastor, are you meaning to speak like that?

  362. Give me a little chance, but here's the deal.

  363. Ultimately, those who are shepherds,

  364. those who are speaking for Christ,

  365. you can identify what they have to say from the Bible itself.

  366. In the New Testament,

  367. we find the significance of the word

  368. in a number of different places,

  369. and you're there in Ephesians chapter 2,

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  370. so I want you to look back to verse 20 and 27.

  371. Ephesians chapter 2,

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  372. he says this,

  373. you're built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets,

  374. Jesus Christ being the chief cornerstone.

  375. And we find there that the thing that is the foundation

  376. of this teaching of the word

  377. is what Jesus said

  378. and what the apostles and prophets had to say.

  379. Look at another passage

  380. where we see this kind of spelled out,

  381. and it's in Acts chapter 27,

    Acts 27 chapter mention

  382. Acts chapter 20, verse 27.

    Acts 20:27

  383. Turn there if you will.

  384. I think Ephesians is going to show up on the screen.

  385. That's not what I want.

  386. Acts chapter 20, verse 27.

    Acts 20:27

  387. This is Paul as he is giving his concluding speech

  388. to actually the elders of Ephesus.

  389. And there in verse 27,

  390. he speaks of his ministry,

  391. and he says this,

  392. listen,

  393. he says,

  394. he says this,

  395. for I did not shrink from declaring to you

  396. the whole counsel of God.

  397. In other words,

  398. my ministry to you

  399. was one that actively declared

  400. what God had,

  401. you want to know what the pastor's ministry is?

  402. It's to tell you what God says.

  403. And then over in verse 32,

  404. he says,

  405. and now I commend you to God

  406. and to the word of his grace,

  407. which is able to build you up

  408. and to give you the inheritance

  409. among all those who are sanctified.

  410. I think also of 2 Peter,

  411. if you'll go there just for a moment,

  412. 2 Peter chapter 1, verse 12.

    2 Peter 1:12

  413. And what we're looking at

  414. is the fact that pastoral ministry

  415. is always directly connected

  416. to the word of God

  417. and to making it clear.

  418. 2 Peter chapter 1, verse 12.

    2 Peter 1:12

  419. It was revealed to them

  420. that they were servants

  421. not themselves but you.

  422. They were serving not themselves but you

  423. in the things

  424. that have now been announced to you

  425. through those who preached

  426. the good news to you

  427. by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven,

  428. things unto which angels

  429. long to look.

  430. They were speaking the word of God

  431. to God's people,

  432. and that was their ministry.

  433. I think also of the passage

  434. over in 2 Timothy chapter 4, verse 2,

    2 Timothy 4:2

  435. where the apostle is giving

  436. his final statements to Timothy

  437. who had been serving

  438. as the pastor at Ephesus,

  439. and as he is summarizing his work,

  440. his pastoral work,

  441. he says,

  442. listen,

  443. I give you this charge

  444. before Christ

  445. will judge the living and the dead.

  446. He said,

  447. preach the word.

  448. And that word preach

  449. is an interesting word

  450. because what it's saying is

  451. announce with earnestness

  452. and persuasion and sincerity

  453. exactly what God has to say.

  454. Well, let's look a little more carefully

  455. at the individual offices.

  456. So turn back in your Bible,

  457. if you would,

  458. to Ephesians chapter 4

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  459. and understand that there are

  460. two different kinds of offices

  461. that are spoken of.

  462. Let's look at them

  463. a little more carefully.

  464. For one, we understand

  465. that there are temporary roles

  466. of the apostle and prophet.

  467. Christ gave the church,

  468. apostles and prophets,

  469. both offices,

  470. which were for a period of time

  471. and were directly connected

  472. to establishing

  473. the New Testament canon.

  474. How many of you understand

  475. what the word canon means?

  476. It doesn't mean boom.

  477. It means the 29 books

  478. that make up the New Testament.

  479. That is referred to

  480. as the canon of the New Testament.

  481. And once the New Testament canon

  482. had been established,

  483. once those 29 books

  484. had been given

  485. through apostolic writing

  486. to the church,

  487. the ministry of the apostle

  488. and the prophet

  489. then passed from the scene.

  490. Now, I want you to understand

  491. that what the word apostle means

  492. is a sent one.

  493. And it was used

  494. in the legal

  495. terms of the day.

  496. It was used of someone

  497. who actually had

  498. power of attorney.

  499. I remember when Judith

  500. and I were younger

  501. and we were going to be gone

  502. for a period of time

  503. and we asked,

  504. I think,

  505. Jack McEverkin,

  506. for one,

  507. to be power of attorney

  508. for our children.

  509. If we both had died

  510. in a plane wreck,

  511. Jack was going to take over.

  512. He was going to take care

  513. of our children.

  514. And we had to sign

  515. a legal document

  516. that said,

  517. in our demise,

  518. he has authority

  519. to act in our behalf.

  520. A person who was an apostle

  521. was one who acted

  522. in Christ's behalf.

  523. And more particularly,

  524. the word was used

  525. to refer to a person

  526. who was directly commissioned

  527. by Christ himself

  528. as his representative

  529. during the formation

  530. of the faith.

  531. One of the things

  532. that we bump into now

  533. is the idea

  534. that there are modern-day

  535. apostles floating around today

  536. that have apostolic power

  537. and are actually apostles

  538. of Jesus Christ.

  539. And that is not true.

  540. There are only 12 men

  541. who were appointed

  542. by Christ

  543. to be his apostles.

  544. Now, I would be one

  545. who would say

  546. that of those 12,

  547. Paul is the one

  548. who gets the nod,

  549. not Matthias.

  550. Now, you can have it

  551. either way.

  552. We'll find out

  553. when we get to heaven.

  554. But I do want you

  555. to look in your Bible

  556. to Revelation chapter 21,

    Revelation 21:14

  557. verse 14.

  558. How do I know

  559. that there are only

  560. 12 apostles

  561. of the Lord Jesus Christ

  562. formally commissioned

  563. to do his work

  564. as an apostle?

  565. Revelation chapter 21,

    Revelation 21:14

  566. verse 14.

  567. And the wall of the city

  568. had 12 foundations,

  569. and on them were the,

  570. what's the next word?

  571. 12 names

  572. of the 12 apostles

  573. of the Lamb.

  574. How many?

  575. 12.

  576. No more.

  577. The eternal city

  578. will only have

  579. the names of 12 men

  580. who were appointed

  581. to be the apostles

  582. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  583. And you can recognize

  584. that those 12 men

  585. are in an exclusive category.

  586. There's another indication

  587. that the Bible

  588. has no space

  589. for the idea

  590. of apostolic succession.

  591. You know what I mean

  592. by apostolic succession?

  593. The idea that,

  594. well,

  595. the apostles

  596. handed off

  597. the responsibility

  598. to somebody else.

  599. Let me have you again.

  600. And by the way,

  601. you are not here

  602. to hear my opinion.

  603. Do you understand that?

  604. Nod your head.

  605. We're not interested

  606. in your opinion.

  607. We're interested

  608. in what the Bible teaches.

  609. And so,

  610. I want you to turn

  611. in your Bible,

  612. if you would,

  613. to a passage

  614. that deals with this subject

  615. and look,

  616. if you would,

  617. at Acts 12,

    Acts 12:2

  618. verse 2.

  619. We're recognizing

  620. that there's only

  621. 12 apostles

  622. of the Lord Jesus

  623. and there was

  624. no apostolic succession.

  625. Acts,

    Acts 12 chapter mention

  626. chapter 12.

  627. By the way,

  628. who was John's brother,

  629. also an apostle?

  630. They were called

  631. the sons of thunder?

  632. James.

  633. What happened

  634. to James

  635. in chapter 12

  636. is that he was

  637. what?

  638. Executed.

  639. About that time,

  640. Herod the king

  641. laid violent hands

  642. on some who belonged

  643. to the church.

  644. He killed James,

  645. the brother of John,

  646. with the sword.

  647. Do we have any indication

  648. that the church,

  649. after the murder

  650. of James,

  651. decided,

  652. oh, oh, oh, oh,

  653. we need some apostle

  654. to replace James?

  655. What did they do?

  656. They were down one.

  657. And as the apostles

  658. died off,

  659. the apostolic office

  660. came to a conclusion.

  661. I want you to recognize

  662. also that we find

  663. that in the New Testament,

  664. going back to that passage

  665. in Ephesians chapter 4,

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  666. it says there

  667. he gave the apostles,

  668. he gave the prophets.

  669. And in the Old Testament,

  670. the prophets were those

  671. who foretold

  672. and forthtold.

  673. And one of the things

  674. that the prophets

  675. would often say,

  676. in fact,

  677. invariably they would say,

  678. to identify

  679. their common speech

  680. from that which was

  681. divinely appointed,

  682. they would say

  683. something like this,

  684. thus saith the Lord.

  685. And when they said that,

  686. they were making it clear

  687. that they were speaking

  688. directly according

  689. to the direction of God.

  690. They weren't just kind of

  691. freewheeling it

  692. and ad-libbing it.

  693. This is what God

  694. wanted His people to hear.

  695. And these individuals

  696. were divinely enabled

  697. to declare God's Word.

  698. In the New Testament,

  699. prophets were individuals

  700. who were given to the church

  701. during the time

  702. prior to the completion

  703. of the 29 books

  704. of the New Testament.

  705. And these individuals

  706. were empowered

  707. in much the same way,

  708. more so to teach

  709. and proclaim the Word

  710. rather than to give

  711. prophetic utterance.

  712. Now, both the apostles

  713. and the prophets,

  714. divinely appointed by Christ,

  715. had the right and authority

  716. to say,

  717. thus saith the Lord,

  718. and be heard that way.

  719. By the way,

  720. those who profess today

  721. that they have

  722. the same divine power

  723. ought to think very carefully

  724. about several different passages

  725. in relationship

  726. to saying,

  727. God told me,

  728. or I'm telling you

  729. this is what God wants.

  730. How many of you

  731. bumped into people

  732. that claim to have

  733. prophetic authority

  734. and power today?

  735. Well, let's look at

  736. two different passages

  737. in relationship to that.

  738. Turn back in your Bible

  739. to Deuteronomy chapter 18.

    Deuteronomy 18 chapter mention

  740. We're looking not

  741. at the only illustration

  742. of this statement,

  743. but one that is,

  744. I think, undeniably clear.

  745. Deuteronomy chapter 18,

    Deuteronomy 18:20

  746. verse 20 and 22.

  747. But the prophet

  748. who presumes to speak

  749. a word in my name

  750. that I have not commanded

  751. him to speak,

  752. or who speaks in the name

  753. of other gods,

  754. that same prophet shall die.

  755. And if you say in your heart,

  756. how we may know

  757. that the word

  758. that the Lord

  759. has not spoken,

  760. how can you tell

  761. this person's not

  762. a prophet of God?

  763. Look at verse 22.

  764. When a prophet speaks

  765. in the name of the Lord,

  766. if the word does not

  767. come to pass

  768. or come true,

  769. that is a word

  770. that the Lord

  771. has not spoken.

  772. So how many times

  773. does a person

  774. who professes

  775. to be a prophet of God

  776. get to get it wrong?

  777. How many?

  778. One.

  779. Because the outcome

  780. of saying,

  781. thus saith the Lord,

  782. everybody says,

  783. all right,

  784. the clock is ticking,

  785. I'm picking up stones,

  786. and if it doesn't happen,

  787. you're toast.

  788. Hmm?

  789. How many of you

  790. have picked up

  791. the little controller

  792. and channel surfed

  793. and had different individuals

  794. on the TV

  795. that have said

  796. they're prophets of God?

  797. If the church

  798. actually exercised

  799. the understanding

  800. of Scriptures,

  801. we'd have fewer people

  802. doing that.

  803. Turn back in your Bible

  804. also to Revelation

    Revelation 22:19

  805. chapter 22,

  806. verse 19.

  807. Revelation chapter 22,

    Revelation 22:19

  808. verse 19.

  809. If anyone takes away

  810. from the words

  811. of the book

  812. of this prophecy,

  813. God will take away

  814. his share

  815. in the tree of life

  816. and the holy city

  817. which are described

  818. in this book.

  819. Okay?

  820. So we understand

  821. you're not to add,

  822. you're not to take away,

  823. you're not to mess

  824. with the revelation

  825. of God.

  826. God has given it

  827. and it was his place

  828. to give that understanding

  829. and instruction

  830. to his apostles

  831. and to his prophets.

  832. Now let's go

  833. to Ephesians chapter 4

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  834. and understand

  835. the permanent roles

  836. of the evangelist

  837. and the pastor

  838. and teacher.

  839. Ephesians chapter 4,

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  840. we're looking there

  841. at verse 11,

  842. it says that

  843. he gave

  844. the evangelists.

  845. Now I do want you

  846. to notice

  847. that it's

  848. the apostles,

  849. it is the prophets,

  850. it is the evangelists

  851. and I want you

  852. to understand

  853. that an evangelist

  854. is one who travels

  855. from place to place

  856. sharing the gospel.

  857. While every believer,

  858. every one of us

  859. here this morning

  860. are called

  861. to be witnesses

  862. of his grace

  863. and we are to gladly

  864. talk about his power

  865. to save us

  866. and draw us

  867. out of the darkness

  868. of our condition,

  869. nevertheless,

  870. there are those

  871. who he has

  872. gifted

  873. to be evangelists.

  874. There are individuals

  875. who bring the gospel

  876. and make it clear

  877. and people come

  878. to Christ.

  879. Christ has used

  880. and will continue

  881. to use

  882. until he comes back

  883. appointed evangelists

  884. to win people

  885. to the gospel,

  886. to start churches,

  887. to cross oceans

  888. and share

  889. the good news.

  890. I think one of the

  891. best examples

  892. of that

  893. in our modern day

  894. is Billy Graham.

  895. I was doing

  896. a little bit

  897. of research

  898. in terms of his ministry

  899. and this man

  900. has ministered

  901. the gospel

  902. in a formal setting

  903. for over 66 years.

  904. in that time

  905. whether he's been

  906. preaching in auditoriums

  907. or stadiums

  908. or wherever

  909. different kind of places

  910. he has had

  911. an opportunity

  912. of having over

  913. 2 billion people

  914. hear him present

  915. the gospel.

  916. I do want to remind you

  917. that we are in prayer

  918. and we're looking forward

  919. to what will perhaps

  920. be Billy Graham's

  921. last evangelistic outreach

  922. and it's going to be

  923. different than most

  924. of the others.

  925. In the past

  926. he would come to a city

  927. and he would go

  928. to a place

  929. like a stadium

  930. and he would rent

  931. that place

  932. and you'd have

  933. a gathering of people

  934. to that place.

  935. This time

  936. he is going to

  937. preach the gospel

  938. and he's going to

  939. present his message

  940. probably in a studio

  941. somewhere.

  942. It's going to be

  943. recorded

  944. but then sometime

  945. during November

  946. during a series

  947. of days

  948. he is going to

  949. present the gospel

  950. and the encouragement

  951. that I want you

  952. to pray about

  953. and then think about

  954. how you can make

  955. it work

  956. is I want you

  957. to invite people

  958. who are your friends

  959. and neighbors

  960. you don't go to

  961. Cooper Stadium

  962. to hear Billy Graham

  963. you go to your house

  964. and they're on TV

  965. you can have

  966. Billy Graham

  967. present a simple

  968. gospel message

  969. and then when it's over

  970. you get to step on

  971. and say hey listen

  972. let me tell you

  973. what Jesus did for me

  974. and you get to talk

  975. as well

  976. and just share

  977. the simple truth

  978. of how Christ

  979. brought you out

  980. of the hopelessness

  981. of your estate

  982. and gave you

  983. the joy of salvation

  984. we think about evangelists

  985. we think about the fact

  986. that God has appointed

  987. some to travel

  988. around the place

  989. and share the gospel

  990. that brings us then

  991. in Ephesians chapter 4

    Ephesians 4:11

  992. verse 11

  993. to the last little part

  994. it says

  995. the shepherds

  996. and teachers

  997. now there have been

  998. some arguments

  999. or disputes

  1000. I wouldn't call them

  1001. arguments

  1002. no stone throwing here

  1003. but there are those

  1004. who have the idea

  1005. that shepherds

  1006. and teachers

  1007. are two separate

  1008. individuals

  1009. I don't think

  1010. that is supported

  1011. by the text

1012. and I'll tell you why

  1013. because we look

  1014. at the little word

  1015. the

  1016. which is named

  1017. how many times

  1018. how many the's

  1019. do you find

  1020. in this passage

  1021. I'm holding up

  1022. your fingers

  1023. my fingers

  1024. so you can see

  1025. there are four the's

  1026. definite articles

  1027. they're identifying offices

  1028. the apostle

  1029. the prophet

  1030. the evangelist

  1031. the pastor

  1032. teacher

  1033. and so if you're

  1034. to describe

  1035. what this office

  1036. is that is being

  1037. spoken of

  1038. it is identifying

  1039. the fact

  1040. that there is

  1041. one individual

  1042. who serves

  1043. in both capacities

  1044. he is a shepherd

1045. and he is a teacher

  1046. one of the things

  1047. that I periodically

  1048. have individuals

  1049. say to me

  1050. is okay

  1051. okay

  1052. how do you want

  1053. to be titled

  1054. I have friends

  1055. that eventually

  1056. occasionally call me

  1057. bishop

  1058. I don't like bishop

  1059. now there's nothing

  1060. wrong with calling

  1061. me a bishop

  1062. because the word

  1063. prosbuteros

  1064. is there in the

  1065. Greek

  1066. and I have to

  1067. live with it

  1068. but it just

  1069. I like shepherd

  1070. my son-in-law

  1071. calls me bishop

  1072. every now and then

  1073. he can get away

  1074. with it

  1075. it's alright

  1076. but the truth

  1077. of the matter

1078. is if you ask me

  1079. what would I

  1080. prefer to be called

  1081. I would prefer

  1082. to be called

  1083. pastor

  1084. and the reason

  1085. is because

  1086. God made me

  1087. a shepherd

  1088. I do my

  1089. shepherd thing

  1090. and I want you

  1091. to understand

  1092. that when he

  1093. is speaking

  1094. of this servant

  1095. as a shepherd

  1096. the Holy Spirit

  1097. is pointing

  1098. to the responsibility

  1099. that a pastor

  1100. has of staying

  1101. with those

  1102. Christ has appointed

  1103. him to care for

  1104. and leading

  1105. protecting

  1106. correcting

  1107. and feeding

  1108. the shepherd

  1109. is never the owner

  1110. of the flock

  1111. the shepherd

  1112. is one

  1113. who is a servant

  1114. of the Lord

  1115. Jesus Christ

  1116. and serves

  1117. in his stead

  1118. and for his good

  1119. a faithful shepherd

  1120. cares for the

  1121. beloved of Christ

  1122. and models his love

  1123. to the people

  1124. that Christ loves

  1125. I want you to

  1126. recognize that a

  1127. faithful shepherd

  1128. is a divine gift

  1129. from the body

  1130. and is under

  1131. assignment from

  1132. the chief shepherd

  1133. if you want to

  1134. know why I'm here

  1135. I am here

  1136. because Christ

  1137. sent me here

  1138. we are praying

  1139. asking God

  1140. to bring us

  1141. a family youth

  1142. pastor

  1143. and one of the

  1144. things that I

  1145. pray for

  1146. is Lord

  1147. you send us

  1148. your man

  1149. I was talking

  1150. with a dear

  1151. pastor

  1152. I'm getting hot

  1153. so bear with me

  1154. I was talking

  1155. with a dear

  1156. pastor

  1157. that they

  1158. have been

  1159. looking for

  1160. a family

  1161. youth pastor

  1162. much the same

  1163. way as we

  1164. have

  1165. for 18

  1166. months

  1167. 18 months

  1168. and the

  1169. congregation

  1170. there

  1171. has begun

  1172. to become

  1173. a little bit

  1174. impatient

  1175. and that

  1176. dear pastor

  1177. has said

  1178. to them

  1179. on more

  1180. than one

  1181. occasion

  1182. listen

  1183. we can

  1184. fill this

  1185. position

  1186. very quickly

  1187. but if

  1188. we are

  1189. precipitous

  1190. and we do

  1191. not wait

  1192. on the

  1193. Lord

  1194. we will

  1195. not have

  1196. God's

  1197. man

  1198. and we

  1199. will

  1200. be

  1201. sorry

  1202. I want

  1203. to tell

  1204. you

  1205. thank you

  1206. thank you

  1207. thank you

  1208. thank you

  1209. thank you

  1210. thank you

  1211. that you

  1212. have not

  1213. been

  1214. impatient

  1215. we are

  1216. looking

  1217. for a

  1218. man

  1219. who is

  1220. sent

  1221. from

  1222. God

  1223. we

  1224. don't

  1225. know

  1226. who

  1227. he

  1228. is

  1229. yet

  1230. but

  1231. every

  1232. now

  1233. and then

  1234. when

  1235. Tim

  1236. Kenoyer

  1237. gets a

  1238. little

  1239. frustrated

  1240. and I

  1241. so

  1242. appreciate

  1243. the parents

  1244. and our

  1245. youth

  1246. leaders

  1247. they're

  1248. doing a

  1249. great

  1250. job

  1251. I

  1252. remind

  1253. myself

  1254. that

  1255. Jesus

  1256. loves

  1257. this

  1258. body

  1259. more

  1260. than

  1261. I

  1262. do

  1263. and

  1264. he

  1265. has

  1266. somebody

  1267. out

  1268. there

  1269. and

  1270. he

  1271. will

  1272. provide

  1273. in

  1274. his

  1275. time

  1276. I

  1277. think

  1278. about

  1279. what

  1280. it

  1281. says

  1282. in

  1283. 1

    1 Peter 5 chapter mention

  1284. Peter

  1285. chapter

  1286. 5

  1287. where

  1288. the

  1289. apostle

  1290. Peter

  1291. writes

  1292. to

  1293. those

  1294. who

  1295. would

  1296. be

  1297. shepherds

  1298. !

  1299. He

  1300. says

  1301. feed

  1302. the

  1303. flock

  1304. of

  1305. God

  1306. and

  1307. I'm

  1308. reminded

  1309. that

  1310. my

  1311. responsibility

  1312. is to

  1313. care

  1314. for

  1315. you

  1316. by

  1317. that

  1318. I

  1319. actually

  1320. heard

  1321. Boy

  1322. I'm

  1323. trying

  1324. to

  1325. think

  1326. of

  1327. who

  1328. it

  1329. is

  1330. Capitol

  1331. Hill

  1332. Baptist

  1333. Church

  1334. in

  1335. Washington

  1336. D.C.

  1337. Sam

  1338. tell me

  1339. who the

  1340. pastor

  1341. is

  1342. Mark

  1343. Dever

  1344. Mark

  1345. Dever

  1346. that's

  1347. it

  1348. here's

  1349. how

  1350. Mark

  1351. Dever

  1352. summarizes

  1353. pastoral

  1354. ministry

  1355. he says

  1356. love

  1357. he says

  1358. teach

  1359. and pray

  1360. you got

  1361. that

  1362. teach and pray

  1363. love

  1364. and stay

  1365. teach and pray

  1366. love

  1367. and stay

  1368. I like that

  1369. description

1370. one of the things that has been stunning

  1371. and sobering

1372. as your search committee has been pursuing

1373. men to serve as pastors here

  1374. or a pastor here

1375. we have been discouraged by the

  1376. transients

1377. pastors who are staying two years

1378. two and a half years

1379. and thinking that they've kind of fulfilled their duty

1380. I didn't even get to know you in two years

  1381. do you understand that

1382. how many of you would trust a person to walk in two years

  1383. no

1384. it takes time to get there

  1385. teach and pray

  1386. love

  1387. and stay

1388. in speaking of this servant

  1389. we recognize that he's a shepherd

  1390. but he's also a teacher

1391. and what the Holy Spirit is reminding the church of

1392. is that the man that God gives them

1393. is primarily tasked with the responsibility of being a teacher of the word

1394. at the heart of what this man's call is

  1395. the holy duty

  1396. of first modeling

1397. and then opening the word

1398. and calling people to hear it

  1399. and follow the wisdom

1400. and the counsel of God

  1401. a man who is a shepherd

  1402. teacher

1403. is one who has to live the word

  1404. and apply the word

1405. and then open it up

1406. and instruct people from the word

1407. and so when I stand before you

  1408. I stand before you

1409. with a sensitivity to the fact

1410. that I am responsible for my walk

  1411. in Hebrews chapter 12 verse 7

    Hebrews 12:7

1412. the author of the book of Hebrews says

1413. you are to remember those

1414. who taught the word among you

  1415. and in saying remember

  1416. he's saying hey

1417. pay attention to their life

  1418. to their walk

  1419. to their behavior

  1420. because really

  1421. how a man lives

  1422. ultimately

  1423. is an indication

  1424. of what he believes

  1425. isn't that right

1426. you can stand up here in the pulpit

  1427. and say a lot

1428. but at the end of the day

  1429. what you are

1430. comes out in how you act

1431. and so I want you to understand

  1432. that a pastor's life

  1433. like that

  1434. of a godly father

  1435. in Deuteronomy chapter 6

    Deuteronomy 6 chapter mention

  1436. is first of all

  1437. to be marked

1438. by a love for the word

  1439. and a willingness

  1440. to obey it

  1441. and then subsequently

1442. a willingness to teach it

1443. let me close by reminding you

  1444. that the servant gifts

  1445. are in one sense

  1446. no different

  1447. than the serving gifts

1448. now what do I mean by that

  1449. serving gifts

  1450. are things like

  1451. showing mercy

  1452. ability to

  1453. to minister

  1454. to

  1455. to administrate

  1456. different kinds

  1457. of serving gifts

1458. and those are the ones

  1459. that we find in

  1460. Romans 12

  1461. and 1 Corinthians 12

  1462. and I said that

  1463. there is fundamentally

  1464. no difference

  1465. between the servant gifts

  1466. which are individuals

  1467. and serving gifts

1468. that we've all been given

  1469. in that

  1470. they are designed

  1471. for the good

  1472. of the body

  1473. and their blessing

  1474. and benefit

  1475. is only seen

  1476. when they are

  1477. actively engaged

  1478. in doing

  1479. what they've been called

  1480. and equipped to do

  1481. does that make sense

1482. if I walked in here

  1483. tomorrow

  1484. and said

  1485. I'm done being a servant

  1486. I don't like being a pastor

1487. well I do like being a pastor

1488. but just if I said that

  1489. that would be sinful

1490. would you agree with me

  1491. that would be wrong

  1492. yeah I have been

  1493. I have been the

  1494. I have

1495. I have first of all

1496. been saved by the grace of God

  1497. and gifted

  1498. for your sake

  1499. and you

  1500. have been gifted

  1501. for one another's sake

1502. I have no more right

  1503. to step away

  1504. from my responsibility

  1505. of serving Christ

  1506. in this place

  1507. than you do

1508. and all God's people said

  1509. that is theologically accurate

  1510. and correct

  1511. and it deserves

  1512. a loud amen

  1513. okay

  1514. took you a while

1515. but you got on a roll

  1516. it's the truth

  1517. so

  1518. Pastor Saul

1519. is going to be overwhelmed

  1520. with people

  1521. who want to put

  1522. their spiritual gifts

  1523. to use

  1524. in the nursery

  1525. you had them

  1526. take care of them

  1527. amen

  1528. it's an amen

1529. for people that are over 70

  1530. that's the right

  1531. amen

  1532. okay

  1533. but anyway

  1534. hey

  1535. get to work

  1536. all of you

1537. so let me ask you

  1538. a practical question

  1539. are you a believer

  1540. if you're here today

1541. and you do not know Christ

  1542. talking to you

  1543. about being actively involved

1544. in the body of Christ

1545. just doesn't make any sense

  1546. because the first thing

  1547. you need to do

1548. is come to the cross

  1549. and recognize

  1550. that you are

  1551. a morally bankrupt

1552. on the way to hell

  1553. sinner

1554. and you have no hope

  1555. apart from Jesus Christ

  1556. you can't stand up

  1557. in eternity

1558. and wave the little stack

  1559. of chits

  1560. of the nice things

  1561. you've done

  1562. and say

  1563. Jesus

  1564. can I come in

  1565. I was

  1566. blah blah blah blah

  1567. no

  1568. no

  1569. and if you're here

  1570. this morning

1571. and you do not know

  1572. Christ

  1573. the first thing

  1574. that you desperately need

1575. is to come to the point

  1576. of confessing your sin

1577. and believing in Jesus Christ

  1578. in whom alone

  1579. is salvation

1580. and if you are a believer

  1581. Ephesians chapter 4

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  1582. says

  1583. with the power

  1584. of the spirit

  1585. of God

  1586. behind it

  1587. connect

  1588. and use your

  1589. gifts

  1590. for the sake

  1591. and the glory

  1592. of Christ

  1593. only one life

  1594. will soon be passed

  1595. only what's done

  1596. for Christ

  1597. what

  1598. will last

  1599. let's close in prayer

  1600. Father God

  1601. not by power

  1602. nor by might

  1603. but by my spirit

  1604. saith the Lord

  1605. use your word

  1606. plant it deep

  1607. within our hearts

  1608. let it bear fruit

  1609. to the glory

  1610. and testimony

  1611. of Christ

  1612. give us humble

  1613. and contrite

  1614. spirits

  1615. as we desire

  1616. Christ's glory

  1617. and no one

  1618. else's

  1619. and we ask this

  1620. in your precious name

  1621. amen

  1622. and we ask this

  1623. of God

  1624. and we ask this

  1625. of God

  1626. if any of those

  1627. any of those

  1628. any of those

  1629. any of those

  1630. any of those

  1631. any of those

  1632. any of those

  1633. any of those

  1634. any of those
