  1. Great. That's the kind of things we ought to pray about all the time. Do you realize that? Listen to me carefully.

  2. ! I think about the Psalm 73, where the Psalmist Asaph, he says this, who do I have in heaven but you?

  3. And there is none that I desire beside you.

  4. I think about 1 Peter, where it says, I love this verse, whom having not seen you love, though now you see him not.

  5. That's a mouthful. I don't see him yet, but I love him.

  6. And then it goes on and says, yet believing filled with joy unspeakable and full of glory.

  7. I am convinced, and this is not the Ephesians passage, but it's applicable.

  8. I am convinced that loving Christ is the bedrock.

  9. It is the genesis.

  10. It is the energy that we need for the growth and journey of life.

  11. Would you agree with me?

  12. And here's the truth.

  13. We're not natural at that.

  14. And so, like Stephanie, we need to not only sing the song, but we need to pray the song.

  15. Lord, draw me nearer.

  16. Well, I do want you to turn in your Bibles to Ephesians chapter 5.

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  17. I said 5, and I meant 4.

  18. Let's hope that that is the only error that I make this morning.

  19. Last week, I tried to add two extra books to the Bible, and I was gently rebuffed by one of our dear sisters,

  20. and I am very thankful for that, and I want you to know that.

  21. I said that there are 29 books in the New Testament, and there really aren't.

  22. And so, I'm here.

  23. One of the things about newspapers is that they print their retractions like where?

  24. Page 9, column 4, somewhere in the middle of the page.

  25. Unfortunately, when pastors make errors, it is suitable that they do that at the beginning where they let you know they were wrong.

  26. Do you understand that?

  27. And here's the reason why.

  28. Because I have the responsibility of always speaking the truth.

  29. And when I make a mistake, God forbid, but when I make a mistake, I owe it to the authority and the supremacy of the Word of God

  30. that I let you know that up front.

  31. Now, saying 29, 27 is not a big thing, but we want to always be submissive to the authority and the accuracy of the Word.

  32. Isn't that right?

  33. And so, if I teach it, then I have to model it, and that's why we begin this way.

  34. Let's read the passage of Scripture, and then we're going to pray together and ask that the Spirit of God

  35. would equip us to hear and apply His sweet truth.

  36. Ephesians chapter 4, verse 12 and 13.

    Ephesians 4:12

  37. Actually, I'll pick up in verse 11.

  38. That's where the thought begins.

  39. He gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds, and teachers to equip the saints for the work of ministry,

  40. for building up the body of Christ,

  41. until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God,

  42. to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.

  43. Join me in prayer.

  44. Precious Father, for us, prayer is not something that we do out of habit,

  45. or because it's something that's kind of written into the order of our service.

  46. It is something that we do because we are both desperately dependent upon You,

  47. and we are supremely confident in Your work and Your power in us through Your Spirit and through our humble dependence.

  48. And so, like the psalmist, we would pray this morning,

  49. open our eyes that we might behold wondrous truths in Your law.

  50. And like Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians chapter 2,

    1 Corinthians 2 chapter mention

  51. we are dependent upon Your Spirit, both me in the declaration of the truth,

  52. and then in the lives of Your people in applying it and understanding it and enjoying it

  53. and living in the light of the truth that You've given to us.

  54. We pray that this morning as we study Your Scriptures,

  55. that our hearts would be lifted up to say with awe and reverence

  56. how great You are, how wise You are, how good You are,

  57. and how blessed we are to be Your children

  58. and be drawn together and put together into a body of believers

  59. for the glory and for the sufficiency of the testimony of Christ.

  60. We ask, Lord, that as a result of our hearing the Word,

  61. that we would be different,

  62. that the undeniable effect of the Word of God would be seen

  63. in lives that are changed and lives that are growing in grace.

  64. And we ask this in Your precious name.

  65. Amen.

  66. I remember last week at one point in the sermon,

  67. I referenced the fact that Mark Dever summarized pastoral ministry

  68. by four little statements.

  69. He said that pastoral ministry really comes down

  70. to preach and pray, love and stay.

  71. As I was thinking about this passage in particular

  72. and studying on it earlier, actually last week,

  73. I remember thinking about my ordination service.

  74. And I don't remember exactly, I didn't look at the date,

  75. but I remember that after my ordination service,

  76. I was given the privilege of inviting two different men to preach,

  77. one who preached to me and the other who preached to the church.

  78. And I asked my father to preach to me,

  79. and I asked Dr. Bill Brock,

  80. some of you are here who still remember his ministry,

  81. I asked Dr. Bill Brock if he would preach to the church.

  82. My dad preached from a passage in Deuteronomy

  83. where Moses, as he was given that responsibility and burden

  84. of taking the nation of Israel into the promised land,

  85. across the wilderness, etc.,

  86. he said, listen, I'm not going unless you show me your glory.

  87. You go with me.

  88. And he said, show me your glory.

  89. And I remember that sermon.

  90. I also remember Pastor Brock preaching.

  91. And he dealt with the responsibilities that I had as a pastor

  92. and the responsibilities that the church had to me as their pastor.

  93. And I don't remember the particulars.

  94. I will tell you that I took notes,

  95. and I could pull those up and probably check those,

  96. but I would venture to say that knowing Pastor Brock

  97. and enjoying his ministry for the time that Judith and I were here

  98. before he took us up there to north,

  99. before God took us up there to northeastern Ohio,

  100. I have no doubt that he probably relied on a passage such as Acts 4, verse 42,

  101. where it says that this is what ministry consists of,

  102. in Acts 6, where the apostles said,

  103. but we will give ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word,

  104. and perhaps also on this passage that we're going to be looking at.

  105. We're here, there, we're in this passage in Ephesians 4, verse 12 and 13,

    Ephesians 4:12

  106. where the Spirit of God, after having explained how wonderful the work of Christ is in the church,

  107. he then brings it together in chapter 4, 5, and 6,

  108. and says, all right, since Christ has done this in your life,

  109. here's how you are to live.

  110. And we are in the first part of those instructions

  111. for how the believers are to live together as a community.

  112. I remind you again that the tone or the individual

  113. that this passage is actually written to

  114. is not private individuals, but it's the body of Christ together.

  115. And the starting place that the apostle has

  116. in these lessons for how believers are supposed to live

  117. is the matter of unity.

  118. Not just kind of acquiescing to one another

  119. and kind of getting along in a kind of Rodney King type of mindset,

  120. but really that genuine unity that comes about

  121. from all of us being under the same headship,

  122. namely under Christ.

  123. And in our lesson so far,

  124. we've understood that he gives to us spiritual gifts.

  125. We understood last week that he gives to you spiritual servants.

  126. He gives to you gifted servants who are there

  127. for the sake of the body and for its effectiveness

  128. as Christ's instrument.

  129. Now, what we are looking at today in verse 12 and 13

  130. is really a clear statement of what a pastor's job is to be.

  131. And so let's open the text and follow along

  132. as we understand that, first of all,

  133. pastors are called to equip the saints.

  134. The text announced that a pastor teacher

  135. is responsible for an equipping business.

  136. And given the importance of having a clear understanding of the word,

  137. this morning what I'm going to do here at the outset

  138. is I'm going to explain two particular words

  139. so that you are well informed.

  140. And I want you to know that one of the benchmarks

  141. or the standards against which my ministry is to be judged

  142. is whether, first of all,

  143. I speak the word of God with accuracy

  144. depending on what God has revealed

  145. rather than my own personal ideas and interests.

  146. And secondly, that I speak it with clarity

  147. and help you understand exactly what it is that God says.

  148. I'm reminded of the fact that God intends

  149. for His people to understand the word.

  150. I think that's a very, very important thing to have in mind.

  151. God intends for you to understand the word.

  152. It's vital to you.

  153. I think about the passage over in Deuteronomy chapter 30,

    Deuteronomy 30:11–14

  154. verse 11 through 14,

  155. and just kind of fix that in your mind just for a moment

  156. where Moses, towards the end of his ministry,

  157. he says this about the word.

  158. He says, the word is not far from you.

  159. Do you know what he means by that?

  160. He said, hey, you can get your hands around it.

  161. It's there for you.

  162. How many of you have had to deal with information

  163. that was really pretty fuzzy for you?

  164. It's like, I don't get this.

  165. I don't understand this.

  166. You have to work real, real hard

  167. and it still kind of confuses you.

  168. When it comes to electrical schematics,

  169. Pastor Saul was a physicist

  170. and he worked in physics and blah, blah, blah.

  171. And when we have electrical issues here at the church,

  172. we say, well, here, Pastor Saul, do this.

  173. And he's good with that.

  174. If it comes down to plumbing or carpentry,

  175. we call me out of the reserves.

  176. You know, okay, go.

  177. Water just runs downhill.

  178. Do you follow that?

  179. And it's not so complicated.

  180. But sometimes we deal with things we don't understand

  181. and that's not the way the Word of God is to be viewed.

  182. He wants us to understand it

  183. and my job, among other things,

  184. is to make it understandable.

  185. God intends for his people to read the Bible

  186. and understand what it is saying.

  187. I want you to have that fixed in your mind.

  188. He intends for you to be a people who know the Word.

  189. And part of my job is to encourage, encourage, encourage, encourage,

  190. keep on bumping you to make the Word significant

  191. and supreme and valuable,

  192. not just because it's the Word,

  193. but because it reveals to you the glory of Christ

  194. and the person of Christ

  195. and the reality and nature of God.

  196. Do you follow me?

  197. How is it that we grow in loving Christ?

  198. It will not happen if you sit in a dark corner and go,

  199. mmm, it's not going to happen.

  200. You are going to grow to love Christ

  201. by learning what the Scriptures tell you about Christ.

  202. It's the reason I would encourage you,

  203. if you're, boy, I don't love him like I should,

  204. I would encourage you to begin reading

  205. Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Matthew, Mark, Luke, John,

  206. Matthew, Mark, why would I do that?

  207. You can't love somebody you don't know.

  208. Do you follow that?

  209. Read the Gospels.

  210. Read the Gospels.

  211. Read the Gospels.

  212. Go to the book of Hebrews.

  213. Read Hebrews.

  214. Read the book of Revelation.

  215. Are they easy books?

  216. The answer is no.

  217. But they will be books that will enrich your affection

  218. for the Lord Jesus Christ

  219. and give you legs on which to stand

  220. when you work at loving him.

  221. I want you to recognize that understanding

  222. and applying the Bible is really one of the principal means

  223. whereby we gain blessing from God.

  224. And so as we are studying this morning,

  225. we are going to see things that God intends for his body

  226. to understand about the role and the responsibility of a pastor.

  227. And understanding that is really part of where the blessing comes

  228. from that man that God assigns to you to serve in that capacity.

  229. I want to say something here in relationship to this matter of understanding.

  230. An uninformed believer is at a greater disadvantage than an illiterate citizen.

  231. An uninformed believer is at a greater disadvantage than an illiterate citizen.

  232. Now why would I say that?

  233. We value literacy.

  234. And that's a good thing.

  235. And having a literate congregation or having a literate nation

  236. or a literate community is important

  237. because being able to read and comprehend what is in print

  238. is a very, very valuable resource in the lives of individuals.

  239. But let me say it again.

  240. An ill-informed believer is at a greater disadvantage

  241. than an illiterate citizen.

  242. And the reason is, is because economic and intellectual hardship is one thing.

  243. Spiritual darkness and hardship is of a whole more significant nature.

  244. Now we're looking here at the issue of the responsibility of a pastor teacher

  245. and you mark there in verse 12, it says,

  246. to equip the saints.

  247. The Greek word that Paul chose carries the idea of preparing someone

  248. and putting things in order so that the person is fully prepared to do their work.

  249. It's not enough for a pastor just to kind of back the dump truck of truth up

  250. on the platform and pull the lever and let it all go.

  251. I have had two of my sons go into the military

  252. and neither I did not do it,

  253. but I will tell you that they both explained to me the experience

  254. of arriving at basic and having the process take place

  255. of turning them in from being just a yahoo

  256. to being actually part of the armed services.

  257. And it begins with little things like getting down to your skivvies,

  258. getting your head shaved, and then having people dump a whole bunch of stuff

  259. on your arms and out you walk.

  260. And you have everything you need in that pile.

  261. Now what follows is they teach you all about all the things you have in your hands.

  262. And so equipping is not just shoving all that equipment out in a pile

  263. and saying, well, there it is, do what you want.

  264. It is, this is your business and you are going to learn how to use all this stuff.

  265. I want you to understand that thankfully a pastor is not called to invent equipment

  266. or the training process.

  267. The things that equip the saints are the Word of God.

  268. I want you to turn back.

  269. You're in Ephesians there.

  270. Actually turn forward just a little bit,

  271. but go to 2 Timothy chapter 3 verse 16 and 17.

    2 Timothy 3:16

  272. 2 Timothy chapter 3 verse 16 and 17.

    2 Timothy 3:16

  273. In relationship to what equips the believer,

  274. here's what it says in verse 16 and 17.

  275. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable

  276. for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness.

  277. Hey, listen.

  278. The Bible is your source book.

  279. It's your resource book.

  280. It's what you need.

  281. It's the absolutely go-to document to help you with every aspect of life.

  282. And verse 17, that the man of God, you can put woman in there as well,

  283. may be competent, equipped for every good work.

  284. Listen to me.

  285. The Bible's got the answers.

  286. And my job is to help you understand that,

  287. to remind you of it, to encourage you,

  288. to do everything within my power to encourage you to be a people

  289. whose first thought is,

  290. what does the Bible think?

  291. Now, stop and realize that in our contemporary culture,

  292. when we have a question,

  293. what is the simplest place to go to get information on it?

  294. Say it loud.

  295. Google.

  296. Google.

  297. I mean, hey, how many of you have said to somebody,

  298. Google it?

  299. How many of you have done that?

  300. Google it.

  301. You know what?

  302. Google cannot answer spiritual questions.

  303. And here's what it says in that passage in 2 Timothy 3, verse 17.

    2 Timothy 3:17

  304. It says that the man of God, you who know Christ,

  305. may be completely equipped that you have everything you need

  306. for handling the challenges of life.

  307. It's in the Bible.

  308. The pastor is called to do more than just lecture, however.

  309. He is called to love the Word.

  310. He is called to know the Word.

  311. And he's called to model the Word.

  312. And I rely upon that sequence of loving the Word

  313. and knowing the Word on the basis of what it says

  314. in Deuteronomy 6 when it encourages fathers

  315. in their responsibility of being the minister

  316. and shepherd of their home.

  317. You know what it says?

  318. Love the Lord.

  319. Love the Lord.

  320. That's the starting point.

  321. And let these words that I say to you be in your heart

  322. and then teach them.

  323. I want you to recognize that a pastor is called

  324. to love the Word.

  325. He is called to model the Word.

  326. And those things go together and make for a difference in ministry.

  327. Listen to what Paul had to say to his son in the faith, Timothy,

  328. who was serving as a pastor in a congregation there at Ephesus.

  329. You're in 2 Timothy.

  330. Just go back a little bit to 1 Timothy 4, verse 12.

    1 Timothy 4:12

  331. Let no one despise you for your youth,

  332. but set the believers an example in speech,

  333. in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.

  334. You know what Paul's saying?

  335. He's saying, Timothy, I want you to understand

  336. that one of the essential elements in your ministry

  337. is that you are an example of what you preach.

  338. And that's true.

  339. Pastoral ministry is different in some senses

  340. from many other different kinds of professions.

  341. You may be an excellent surgeon

  342. and an absolute wretch in your moral life.

  343. Do you understand that?

  344. You may be a great carpenter,

  345. and you may be an absolute failure

  346. in your spiritual walk.

  347. You may be the most wonderful mathematician

  348. or scientist or lawyer,

  349. and you win every case,

  350. but the truth of the matter is

  351. is your profession and your practice

  352. may not necessarily be linked together

  353. and require that what you say

  354. and what you do match.

  355. That is not the case in pastoral ministry.

  356. I'll never forget early on in ministry

  357. when Dr. David Moore said to me,

  358. Tim, he said,

  359. character is the only coin you have.

  360. Very interesting statement,

  361. and I thought about that a long time

  362. because at that moment in my life,

  363. I wasn't thinking about coins.

  364. So I had to kind of squeeze the poetry out of it,

  365. and what he was saying is this,

  366. is that your character is at the heart of what you do.

  367. And here is Paul making this statement.

  368. He says,

  369. let no man despise your youth,

  370. but set the believers an example.

  371. In other words,

  372. you are a living illustration of what you preach.

  373. 1 Timothy 4, verse 16,

    1 Timothy 4:16

  374. there follows on that same frame.

  375. He says,

  376. but if you're going to take care of your exampleship,

  377. keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching.

  378. Persist in this,

  379. for in doing so,

  380. you will save both yourself and your hearers.

  381. What's he saying?

  382. Hey, listen.

  383. At the heart of pastoral ministry is,

  384. first of all,

  385. you take care of your own walk before the Lord.

  386. You take care of your own walk before the Lord.

  387. Many, many years ago,

  388. and I don't know exactly why,

  389. but I made a commitment that I would not have devotions

  390. in the same passage that I was going to study

  391. in that week or the week to follow

  392. or the week after that.

  393. I have always had devotions in a portion of the Scripture

  394. that has not been directly related

  395. to what I plan to preach at the moment.

  396. Now, having said that,

  397. one of the things that I,

  398. a number of years ago,

  399. began doing is in preparation for a book

  400. that I had settled in my heart

  401. that I was going to read

  402. or I was going to preach.

  403. I would begin reading that book,

  404. sometimes daily,

  405. the book of Ephesians.

  406. I read pretty much every day

  407. for about five, six months.

  408. But as I was reading it,

  409. I was reading it to understand Ephesians

  410. and its application to me.

  411. I was not reading it for the sake of preaching,

  412. and I did not make notes

  413. for the sake of preaching.

  414. Right now, I'm in the process.

  415. I'm in my seventh month.

  416. I'm almost finished with my seventh month

  417. of reading through the book of John.

  418. Does that tell you

  419. where we're going eventually?

  420. We're going to the book of John, okay?

  421. And I got to tell you,

  422. there are times when I am reading

  423. the book of John,

  424. and I think I can't wait.

  425. But I do it like Ephesians.

  426. Here's the deal.

  427. If the Word of God

  428. is not making a difference in my life,

  429. it won't make much difference in yours.

  430. And I have to preach

  431. with an affection and a passion.

  432. That comes from having time in the Word

  433. and understanding its value.

  434. So to understand what the word equip means,

  435. let's put it this way.

  436. The pastor teacher is called

  437. to use the Word of God

  438. to first shape his own life

  439. and then teach it to fellow believers

  440. so they can do their divine work.

  441. Appropriate ministry with the Word

  442. is first of all,

  443. letting it affect you

  444. and then secondly,

  445. having it affect other people.

  446. And that's important.

  447. Now let's talk secondly

  448. about another word

  449. that appears in the passage.

  450. And so go back,

  451. if you would,

  452. to the book of Ephesians.

  453. We were there in the Timothy.

  454. So let's go back

  455. to Ephesians chapter 4

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  456. and look there.

  457. If you would,

  458. at verse 11,

  459. it says,

  460. or 12,

  461. it says,

  462. to equip who?

  463. Who are we equipping?

  464. Saints.

  465. Okay.

  466. Well, let's explain

  467. how the Bible uses this word.

  468. And so as I think about this,

  469. let me introduce several saints to you.

  470. I don't know that you actually realize

  471. that they're here this morning,

  472. but I'm absolutely certain

  473. that we have saints

  474. in our midst this morning, okay?

  475. Isaac Malumba,

  476. would you stand

  477. just for a moment, please?

  478. This young man

  479. is Saint Isaac Malumba.

  480. Sit down, please.

  481. Mrs. Cassandra Bach,

  482. would you stand, please?

  483. I'm sorry to embarrass you, sister.

  484. This is a saint

  485. in our fellowship.

  486. Have a seat.

  487. I'm not going to ask

  488. the next one to stand

  489. because once you reach 90,

  490. you're okay.

  491. You don't have to stand.

  492. Okay.

  493. But my mother is 91.

  494. She is a saint.

  495. This is Saint Marlia.

  496. We have Saint Isaac.

  497. We have Saint Cassandra.

  498. Isaac and Cassandra

  499. came to know the Lord

  500. this last year, right?

  501. In this year.

  502. And they are saints.

  503. You know,

  504. when we think about saints,

  505. we have a tendency

  506. to think about people that,

  507. I mean, you know,

  508. they do the heavy lifting

  509. for us all spiritually, right?

  510. The truth of the matter is,

  511. let me explain this,

  512. and I don't mean to embarrass

  513. Isaac or Cassandra,

  514. my mother,

  515. if she'll tell me later,

  516. don't do that to me again.

  517. But here's the deal.

  518. Let's explain what the word means.

  519. The Bible uses the word saint

  520. really to mean

  521. one who's set apart,

  522. one who is holy

  523. by virtue of what Christ

  524. has done for him.

  525. And it points to the fact

  526. that someone who has come

  527. to faith in Christ

  528. is a person who's been

  529. set apart by grace.

  530. It would seem

  531. that one of the reasons

  532. Paul and other writers

  533. in the New Testament

  534. chose to use the word saint

  535. when they were talking

  536. about believers

  537. was to remind

  538. those who were

  539. believers,

  540. Christians,

  541. that they had this

  542. wonderful relationship

  543. by virtue of what Christ

  544. had done for them.

  545. And the truth of the matter

  546. is,

  547. is that we are all equally,

  548. once we've come to know Christ,

  549. we are all equally saints

  550. before the Lord Jesus.

  551. Jesus,

  552. if we limit ourselves

  553. to the logic of the Bible.

  554. Now,

  555. why would I say

  556. if we limit ourselves

  557. to the logic of the Bible?

  558. What is the safety

  559. of limiting yourself

  560. to the logic of the Bible?

  561. Does anybody have,

  562. don't have to raise your hand

  563. and say,

  564. I know,

  565. I know,

  566. but what is the safety

  567. of limiting ourselves

  568. to the logic of the Bible?

  569. That's the question.

  570. Here's the answer.

  571. The logic of the Bible

  572. is absolutely reliable.

  573. The logic of Tim Kenoyer,

  574. or for that matter,

  575. any one of our deacons,

  576. or Pastor Saul,

  577. is marked

  578. and is affected

  579. by the noetic effect

  580. of the fall.

  581. What's that noetic word mean?

  582. It just means

  583. that our knowledge

  584. got messed up in the fall.

  585. How many of you realize that?

  586. How many of you,

  587. while you were debating

  588. doing a sin,

  589. thought it was

  590. a pretty smart idea?

  591. Raise your hand.

  592. Come on.

  593. Every one of you.

  594. Every one of you

  595. have at one point or another

  596. thought that the sin

  597. you were thinking about committing,

  598. whether it was getting snarky

  599. with someone

  600. who had been unkind to you,

  601. right?

  602. They had it coming.

  603. Or honking your horn

  604. at somebody

  605. that wasn't moving fast enough.

  606. They need to be divinely prodded.

  607. You know,

  608. there are all kinds of excuses

  609. that we have.

  610. When we're thinking about the sin,

  611. we think it's pretty smart.

  612. And then the Spirit of God

  613. comes along

  614. and taps us on the shoulder

  615. and uses a little Bible verse

  616. and says something such

  617. as the fact that,

  618. you know,

  619. the wrath of man

  620. does not work the right...

  621. Oh, yeah.

  622. Sorry.

  623. My mind,

  624. on its own,

  625. does not do well

  626. with reality

  627. scripturally.

  628. The Spirit of God

  629. uses the Word of God

  630. and keeps me in companionship

  631. with godly people

  632. and helps me

  633. do a better job of it.

  634. Now,

  635. here we are.

  636. We want to be a people

  637. who are informed

  638. by the Scriptures.

  639. And so,

  640. when we look at the Bible,

  641. we see that the term saint

  642. refers to everyone

  643. who has come to genuine faith

  644. in Christ.

  645. And so,

  646. what you are thinking

  647. right now

  648. where you're sitting

  649. is this.

  650. Here it is.

  651. You don't need to say it out loud,

  652. but I hope you're thinking

  653. this thought.

  654. Prove it to me.

  655. Is that what you're thinking?

  656. Pastor,

  657. can you prove that?

  658. Well,

  659. yes,

  660. I can.

  661. Here we go.

  662. We're going to look

  663. at a couple different places

  664. where in the Bible

  665. it refers to people as saints.

  666. And it's not talking about

  667. people who have

  668. kind of arrived,

  669. but it's talking about

  670. usans,

  671. you and me.

  672. Go to your Bible.

  673. Turn to 1 Corinthians 1,

    1 Corinthians 1:2

  674. verse 2.

  675. We're dealing with the reality

  676. that in the Scriptures

  677. every believer

  678. who has come to faith

  679. is addressed

  680. by the title saint.

  681. 1 Corinthians 1,

    1 Corinthians 1:2

  682. verse 2.

  683. To the church of God

  684. that is in Corinth

  685. to all those

  686. sanctified in Christ,

  687. Jesus called to be saints

  688. together with all those

  689. who in every place

  690. call upon the name

  691. of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  692. both their Lord

  693. and ours.

  694. Let's go to 1 Corinthians

  695. or 2 Corinthians 1,

    2 Corinthians 1:1

  696. verse 1.

  697. And by the way,

  698. what kind of church

  699. was Corinth?

  700. Of all the churches

  701. in the New Testament,

  702. it was the one

  703. that was filled

  704. with the nicest people,

  705. the people who had

  706. the least problem

  707. with sin.

  708. No, no, no, no, no.

  709. That's not true.

  710. Okay.

  711. First, 2 Corinthians 1,

    2 Corinthians 1:2

  712. verse 2.

  713. To the church of God

  714. that is at Corinth

  715. with all the saints

  716. who are in the whole

  717. of Achaia.

  718. Now, I could just

  719. rattle on,

  720. have you go to

  721. Ephesians 1,

  722. to Philippians 1,

  723. to Colossians 1,

  724. and what you will

  725. recognize is that

  726. the church commonly

  727. was referred to

  728. by the title saint.

  729. The saints.

  730. The saints.

  731. So, here we are

  732. with the saints

  733. in Maranatha Baptist Church

  734. and you're thinking

  735. to yourself,

  736. well, there are

  737. some people here

  738. who are not very saintly

  739. and I'm sure

  740. you're referencing yourself,

  741. not other people.

  742. I do want you

  743. to understand

  744. that when the Bible

  745. refers to us

  746. as saints,

  747. it is not talking

  748. about us

  749. as having reached

  750. a certain plateau

  751. of spirituality

  752. and having extra

  753. lifting power

  754. so we could be of help

  755. to other people.

  756. It's just talking

  757. about the fact

  758. that we are those

  759. who've come to Christ.

  760. Now, are there saints

  761. in heaven?

  762. The answer is yes,

  763. but they're in heaven

  764. by virtue of having

  765. been saved

  766. through the grace of God

  767. and then death

  768. taking them

  769. to that place.

  770. Saints are not people

  771. who have a special section

  772. in the church.

  773. or have extra ability

  774. to pray.

  775. People come and say,

  776. Pastor, would you pray

  777. for me?

  778. I want you to know

  779. I'm happy to pray for you,

  780. but I do want you

  781. to know this.

  782. My prayer doesn't count

  783. any more in God's eyes

  784. than your prayer does.

  785. Why is that?

  786. We are equally saved

  787. by the grace of God

  788. and we have the same

  789. privilege of access

  790. into His presence.

  791. So I want you

  792. to understand

  793. that a saint

  794. just refers to

  795. an individual

  796. who's a believer.

  797. Probably one other argument

  798. that we would undeniably

  799. have to admit

  800. helps us understand

  801. that saints are just

  802. people like us

  803. is that Paul writes here

  804. in chapter 4, verse 12

  805. to equip the saints.

  806. If saints have arrived

  807. spiritually,

  808. do you need to do

  809. any further education

  810. and equipping?

  811. What's the answer?

  812. You wouldn't have to

  813. if they'd already been there

  814. and done that.

  815. Secondly,

  816. I want you to understand

  817. that saints are called

  818. to do the work

  819. of ministry

  820. to mature

  821. and manifest Christ.

  822. The Bible makes it clear

  823. that the primary duty

  824. of the pastor teacher

  825. is to equip

  826. the saints.

  827. But why?

  828. Here's the key.

  829. Because the saints

  830. are to be equipped

  831. so they are effective

  832. in doing the work

  833. of ministry.

  834. ministry.

  835. Those who have known me

  836. for a long time

  837. have heard me say

  838. on many occasions

  839. that my job

  840. is to help you

  841. do your job.

  842. That's it.

  843. My job is to help

  844. you do your job.

  845. To encourage you

  846. to do your job.

  847. To explain how

  848. that your job

  849. should be done,

  850. etc.

  851. And at the heart

  852. of what the expectation

  853. of Scripture is

  854. is that those

  855. who are called

  856. to be pastor teachers

  857. are actively engaged

  858. in preparing,

  859. encouraging,

  860. education,

  861. educating,

  862. and leading people

  863. towards doing the things

  864. that they've been called

  865. by God to do.

  866. There is no indication

  867. in Scripture

  868. that God ever intended

  869. for ministry

  870. or more specifically

  871. the responsibility

  872. of ministry

  873. to be done

  874. by a select few.

  875. The work of ministry

  876. is to be done

  877. by all the members

  878. of the body of Christ.

  879. And to this end,

  880. each member

  881. has been given

  882. spiritual gifts

  883. and it is towards

  884. this end

  885. that the pastor teacher

  886. is actively engaged

  887. in equipping,

  888. encouraging,

  889. strengthening them

  890. so they'll be active

  891. in doing the things

  892. that they've been called

  893. to do.

  894. The members of his body

  895. are to be at work

  896. and we're looking

  897. at the passage

  898. in Ephesians 4,

    Ephesians 4:12

  899. verse 12.

  900. It says here,

  901. Ephesians 4,

  902. to equip the saints

  903. for the work of ministry

  904. for building up

  905. the body of Christ.

  906. Now verse 13 then

  907. gives a little more

  908. explanation of what

  909. it means to build up

  910. the body

  911. and I'm going to press

  912. that together for you

  913. and have you recognize.

  914. Number one,

  915. building up the body

  916. means coming

  917. to the unity of faith.

  918. Coming to the unity

  919. of faith.

  920. Shepherding aims

  921. at unity that comes

  922. from understanding

  923. and holding common

  924. truths of the Scripture.

  925. The divisions of the church

  926. at Corinth

  927. were the result

  928. of people

  929. that did not hold

  930. to the same truths.

  931. When you find people

  932. that are of radically

  933. different perspectives

  934. on truth,

  935. guess what happens?

  936. Invariably,

  937. some of you sitting out here

  938. might be conservative

  939. in your political theology

  940. and you work with people

  941. who are right next to you

  942. who are liberal

  943. in their perspective

  944. and what happens

  945. when you try

  946. to have conversations?

  947. Goes pretty well,

  948. doesn't it?

  949. You talk to them

  950. about your fiscal frugality

  951. and how you think

  952. that, you know,

  953. blah, blah, blah

  954. and what happens?

  955. It devolves

  956. into a spitting match

  957. at best.

  958. Why is that?

  959. Because there is

  960. no unity of faith.

  961. There's no core

  962. that the two of you

  963. hold to together.

  964. And so Paul explains,

  965. he says,

  966. listen,

  967. the responsibility

  968. of the pastor-teacher

  969. is to build up the body

  970. and the way that happens

  971. is bringing about unity

  972. of faith

  973. and when it says faith,

  974. it's just not talking about,

  975. well,

  976. having some kind of abstract,

  977. I got faith.

  978. It's talking about the faith,

  979. the truth,

  980. the truth.

  981. And so it's no accident

  982. that on Sunday evenings

  983. we are committed

  984. to doctrinal teaching

  985. of some of the essential truths

  986. of the Scripture

  987. and the reason we're doing that

  988. is we want unity

  989. in our fellowship

  990. and strength

  991. that comes about

  992. from having that cohesive relationship

  993. one with another

  994. around common truth.

  995. Secondly,

  996. we find there in the passage

  997. it says also

  998. coming to the knowledge

  999. of the Son of God.

  1000. The word for knowledge

  1001. that Paul uses here

1002. is a word that refers

1003. to a deep and accurate

  1004. understanding of something

  1005. and in essence

  1006. it means this,

  1007. having an intimate relationship

  1008. with Christ.

  1009. It's not enough

1010. just to know the facts

  1011. about Jesus.

1012. Now I'll say that carefully.

  1013. It is not enough

1014. to just know the facts

  1015. about Jesus.

  1016. Why is that?

  1017. Well,

1018. you want a Bible answer

  1019. don't you?

  1020. Say yes.

  1021. Yes.

1022. You always want a Bible answer.

  1023. What does it say

1024. in the book of James?

  1025. It says you believe

  1026. there is one God

  1027. you do well

  1028. the demons what?

  1029. The demons believe.

1030. Has that done them any good

  1031. and what's the answer?

  1032. Knowing the facts

1033. is not what this is talking about.

  1034. It is talking about

  1035. knowing the truth

1036. but then having that truth

1037. boil out into a personal

  1038. genuine relationship

  1039. that's marked by affection

  1040. and by an attachment.

  1041. Shepherds aim at heart

  1042. affection for Christ

1043. and a desire to please Him.

1044. Let me say that again slowly.

  1045. Shepherds aim at heart

  1046. affection for Christ

1047. and a desire to please Him.

1048. Oh, my prayer is that

  1049. God would deliver people

  1050. from the hollowness

  1051. of an intellectual comprehension

  1052. of Christ

  1053. that is absolutely

  1054. devoid of affection.

  1055. That's important.

  1056. Now, are there days

  1057. where our affections

  1058. are a little dampened

  1059. by circumstances?

  1060. Yes.

  1061. But, beloved,

  1062. listen to me carefully

1063. and I want you to think

  1064. with me about this.

1065. If there is in your life

  1066. a persistent

  1067. lack

  1068. of affection

  1069. for Christ,

  1070. there's something

  1071. wrong.

1072. Why would I say that?

  1073. John chapter 21.

    John 21 chapter mention

  1074. Don't go there

  1075. but remember Jesus,

1076. one of the last things

  1077. that He said,

  1078. He pulled Peter aside.

1079. Remember Peter was the guy

  1080. who really messed up

1081. and denied him three times, right?

1082. And so, Jesus pulls him aside

  1083. and He says,

  1084. Hey, Peter,

  1085. do you what?

  1086. Do you love me?

  1087. Yeah.

1088. You know that I love you.

1089. Well, then feed my sheep.

  1090. Do you love me?

  1091. You know all things.

  1092. Feed my sheep.

  1093. See, very interesting,

  1094. at the heart,

  1095. at the foundation,

  1096. at the base

  1097. of what Paul

1098. was calling Peter to do

  1099. was his heart's affection

  1100. for Christ.

  1101. over in Revelation,

  1102. as the Lord Jesus

1103. wrote to one of the churches,

  1104. He says this,

1105. I have something against you

  1106. because you have lost

  1107. your first love.

  1108. And so,

  1109. shepherding aims

  1110. at heart affection

  1111. for Christ

  1112. and a desire

  1113. to please Him.

  1114. Finally,

  1115. shepherding aims

  1116. at growing mature

  1117. and Christ-like believers.

  1118. You look there

  1119. in verse 13,

  1120. it says,

  1121. the knowledge

1122. of the Son of God

  1123. to mature manhood

  1124. to the measure

  1125. of the stature

  1126. of the fullness

  1127. of Christ.

  1128. Behind the work

  1129. of any pastor

  1130. who is faithful

  1131. is an unrelenting

  1132. dependence

  1133. upon three agents

  1134. to do their work

  1135. in the life

  1136. of a believer.

  1137. And let me just

  1138. rattle these off.

  1139. One is the power

1140. of the Word of God.

  1141. Pastor Saul

  1142. referenced it this morning

  1143. when he referred

  1144. to the passage

  1145. in 2 Corinthians 3,

    2 Corinthians 3:18

  1146. verse 18,

  1147. where it said this,

  1148. we, beholding

  1149. His glory,

  1150. are transformed

  1151. from glory to glory.

  1152. Do you know

  1153. what it's saying?

  1154. It's saying that

  1155. the more we know

  1156. about Jesus,

  1157. the more we become

  1158. like Him.

1159. And that's at the heart

  1160. of pastoral ministry.

1161. I want you to know

  1162. more about Jesus.

1163. I want you to love Him more.

  1164. I can't make that happen,

1165. but I can encourage you.

  1166. I can model it.

  1167. I can draw you

1168. to the Word of God

  1169. and say, listen,

1170. He who has saved you

  1171. is worthy

  1172. of your infinite affection,

  1173. and someday

  1174. when you're in heaven,

  1175. you are just going

  1176. to be beyond yourself

  1177. with delight

  1178. and satisfaction

  1179. seeing Him.

1180. And here in this life,

  1181. you should be growing

  1182. in your interest

1183. in the person of Christ.

  1184. Secondly,

1185. the power of the Spirit of God.

  1186. Three agents

  1187. that help you

  1188. in this growth process.

  1189. One's the power

1190. of the Word of God.

  1191. Second is the power

1192. of the Spirit of God.

  1193. 2 Corinthians 3,

    2 Corinthians 3:18

  1194. verse 18,

  1195. again,

  1196. the very last part

  1197. of the verse,

  1198. says,

  1199. talking about the fact

  1200. that it's the Lord,

  1201. the Spirit of God

1202. that does this work in you.

1203. And one of the ways

  1204. that you engage

  1205. and involve

  1206. the Spirit of God

1207. is by pleading with Him

  1208. to do it.

1209. And so if you're sitting

  1210. here this morning

1211. and the truth of the matter

  1212. is your heart

  1213. is cold towards Christ,

1214. what I would ask you

1215. to do is suck it up

  1216. and say,

  1217. hey, listen,

  1218. I'm a mess,

  1219. do something.

  1220. I think sometimes

1221. we're afraid to do that.

  1222. I've been debating

  1223. why that is.

1224. And I'm not fully convinced

  1225. that the reason

1226. we're afraid to do it

  1227. is because we're afraid

1228. of what He will do.

  1229. That's not it.

  1230. I think we're afraid

  1231. that we'll come off

  1232. the little throne

  1233. we have established

  1234. for ourselves.

  1235. At the heart

  1236. of our hesitancy

  1237. is self-idolatry.

  1238. Lord,

  1239. I don't want to pray

  1240. and ask you

1241. to do whatever it takes.

  1242. By the way,

1243. would He ever do anything

  1244. nasty and wicked

  1245. and harsh to you?

  1246. And what's the answer?

  1247. He can't do it

  1248. because He's God.

  1249. Every stroke

  1250. from His hand

  1251. is marked

  1252. by His love.

1253. And I would ask you,

  1254. plead with Him,

  1255. man,

  1256. I want to know

  1257. who Jesus is.

1258. I want to be changed

  1259. by that knowledge.

  1260. The third agent

  1261. that God uses

1262. is the people of God.

  1263. The people of God.

  1264. Acts chapter 4,

    Acts 4:32

  1265. verse 32.

  1266. The people of God.

  1267. Hey,

1268. you want to be a floater?

1269. Do you know what I mean

  1270. by a floater?

  1271. This morning,

  1272. after the morning service,

  1273. I'm going to talk

  1274. to Tim and Julia.

  1275. I am embarrassing you,

  1276. Tim,

  1277. ahead of time,

  1278. so where are you?

  1279. Raise your hand.

  1280. Wave at me.

  1281. Tim and Julia

1282. are going to get married

1283. sometime in the distant future.

  1284. It's actually around February,

  1285. am I right?

1286. And one of the things

  1287. I'm going to say

1288. to this lovely young couple

1289. and Tim is on my bad side

  1290. because he moved away

  1291. to get a job.

  1292. I don't understand this

  1293. but I'm glad.

  1294. I love you anyway.

1295. But one of the things

  1296. I'm going to say

  1297. to Tim and Julia

  1298. is that next to

  1299. the relationship

1300. with the Lord Jesus Christ,

  1301. marriage can be

  1302. the most wonderful experience

  1303. this side of glory.

  1304. but it takes work.

  1305. It takes work.

  1306. It takes work.

  1307. You have to pursue

  1308. relationship

  1309. with the other person.

1310. You have to be willing

  1311. to humble yourself.

1312. You have to be willing

1313. to invest in that process

  1314. over and over

  1315. and over again.

  1316. And so my plea

  1317. with you this morning

  1318. would be this,

1319. that as you think about

1320. what a pastor is to do,

  1321. you understand

  1322. that my divine appointment,

  1323. it is not something

  1324. that I arbitrarily chose.

1325. It is not a career path.

  1326. Tim Knoyer

  1327. and anybody

  1328. that ever occupies

  1329. this pulpit

1330. better be able to say

  1331. I was called

  1332. by God

  1333. to serve

  1334. as a shepherd.

  1335. And my calling

  1336. is to equip you

  1337. to do the work

  1338. that Christ

  1339. has called you to.

  1340. Let's close in prayer.

  1341. Precious Father,

  1342. we are thankful

  1343. that you

  1344. in your glorious wisdom

  1345. have given to us

  1346. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  1347. And in your wisdom

1348. you have drawn us together

1349. and you have fit us

  1350. in to being

  1351. the body of Christ.

  1352. And you intend

  1353. for the body

  1354. to work

  1355. for the glory

  1356. of Christ.

1357. There are some of us

  1358. here this morning,

  1359. Lord,

  1360. who have allowed

  1361. the enemy

  1362. of our souls

  1363. to rob us

  1364. of the joy

  1365. and the significance

  1366. that comes

  1367. from being engaged

  1368. in that work.

  1369. And for those,

1370. I would plead this morning

1371. that you would bring them

  1372. to repentance,

  1373. repentance,

  1374. to restitution

  1375. and reconciliation

  1376. that they would know

  1377. the full sweetness

  1378. that comes

  1379. with actively

  1380. and being involved

  1381. in the bride

  1382. of Christ.

1383. And I have no doubt

  1384. that there are some

  1385. here today,

  1386. Christ,

1387. that do not know you

  1388. as their Savior.

1389. And it would be my plea

  1390. that this morning,

  1391. even with the preaching

1392. of the Word of God,

  1393. that their heart

  1394. would be burdened

  1395. and miserable

  1396. with the sin

  1397. of their soul

  1398. and they would understand

  1399. that there is nothing

  1400. they can do

  1401. to remedy that burden

  1402. except to cry out

  1403. in broken humility

  1404. and say,

  1405. I stand morally bankrupt

  1406. before a holy God

1407. and I have no hope

  1408. of an eternal destiny

  1409. in heaven

1410. apart from what Christ did

1411. when He died on the cross

1412. and I plead with you

  1413. to save me.

  1414. And we pray this

  1415. in Jesus' name.

  1416. Amen.
