  1. In Ephesians chapter 4, Ephesians chapter 4 verse 25 through 29.

Ephesians 4 chapter mention Ephesians 4:25–29

  2. ! I want you to follow along in your Bible as I read this passage, and then I would ask that you join me in prayer as we come together and ask the work of the Spirit of God in giving to us hearts that are attentive to us.

  3. Intentive, humble, teachable.

  4. Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another.

  5. Be angry and do not sin.

  6. Do not let the sun go down on your anger and give no opportunity to the devil.

  7. Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need.

  8. Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouth, but only such as is good for building up as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.

  9. Let us pray.

  10. Father God, this morning we need your help.

  11. I need your help to preach the Scriptures accurately, and by your grace and your enabling to allow the Word to be applied practically.

  12. Father God, this morning we need your help to pray.

  13. That those who are here today and know the Lord Jesus Christ would have the Word of God form and shape the things they say and the things they think.

  14. That all of us together would be better illustrations of the power of the cross and the power of salvation.

  15. Father, we also pray for those who are here among us today that do not know Christ, who perhaps know of Him in an intellectual sense.

  16. They know the facts or they've heard His name, but they do not have the sweet personal relationship that comes because of grace,

  17. that first draws them to see the absolute moral bankruptcy of their soul, the darkness of their heart,

  18. and then draws them to cry out and ask for salvation.

  19. We pray, Father, that all that takes place this morning would cause us to grow in our affection for the Lord Jesus Christ.

  20. And we ask this because of Him.

  21. Amen.

  22. Amen.

  23. One of the lessons that I learned over the years in ministry is that conversion is really more than a set of rules.

  24. The wonder and the power of God in transforming a person's life by conversion is something that is spectacular.

  25. In fact, it tells us in the book of Luke that angels do what?

  26. What do the angels do when a person is genuinely converted?

  27. What do they do?

  28. They get happy.

  29. They rejoice.

  30. I can't help but think back to the book of Job where it talks about the fact that as angels watched God in creation

  31. and they saw Him forming the stars and all the miraculous things that He did,

  32. they couldn't contain themselves.

  33. They broke out in just absolute praise and worship as they saw the power of God at play.

  34. And it tells us that when genuine conversion takes place in a person's life that it is in every sense as spectacular and wonderful an issue as creation was,

  35. so you can understand that angels would rejoice.

  36. What we're looking at actually this morning in Ephesians chapter 4 is a practical application to the matter of what conversion really is.

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  37. Paul took three chapters to teach us the glory of God in conversion,

  38. explaining to us the miraculous, the undeniable, amazing fact that He would take people who are dead in trespasses and sin,

  39. miserably broken by Satan, and He would transform them.

  40. And in chapter 4, 5, and 6, Paul then begins to lay out very carefully and thoughtfully a clear picture of what is so spectacular and evident about conversion.

  41. The fact of the matter is, is that conversion changes us on the inside.

  42. Isn't that right?

  43. It says, if any man be in Christ Jesus, he is a new creator.

  44. You're different.

  45. And so it's practical and it's understandable that having made this argument for the unbelievable glory of God in salvation,

  46. Paul then would take the time to explain what salvation actually produces in a person's life.

  47. And we're looking at the practical application of, so if a person's converted, what really changes about them?

  48. And we're going to be looking at several things here in the passage,

  49. and we will work our way through it to kind of get a better understanding about what really is different about a person who really knows Christ.

  50. Verse 25,

  51. Therefore, having put away falsehood, and that idea of putting away falsehood kind of takes us back just a little bit to what we studied last week

  52. where it talked about the fact that the believer puts off the old man and puts on the new man.

  53. His past, his behavior from prior to his conversion, that's the old, that's the way he used to be.

  54. Now he is something different, and he's in the process of putting on those characteristics that reflect the Lord Jesus Christ.

  55. And so here is Paul, and he says, listen, we move from lying to being truthful.

  56. Now you may wonder why Paul starts out with lying.

  57. It isn't the first of the Ten Commandments.

  58. It isn't the first with promise.

  59. But here is Paul talking about the fact that conversion makes us radically different,

  60. and he starts out dealing with the matter of lying.

  61. And probably most of us are sitting here thinking to ourselves,

  62. well, that's not the one I have the most problem with.

  63. The truth of the matter is that lying is something that is far more pervasive than we may think.

  64. In fact, let me rephrase this.

  65. Lying is far more pervasive in your life than you think,

  66. and lying is more pervasive in my life than I may think.

  67. And so when the Spirit of God says to me,

  68. Tim Kenoyer, you need to work at not lying,

  69. you need to think very carefully, all right?

  70. Well, that's good for them?

  71. No, no, no, it's also good for me.

  72. And we need to think very carefully about what is actually involved in lying

  73. and its application to our lives.

  74. We understand about people lying.

  75. You listen to the news.

  76. Depending on which channel you go to,

  77. what do you immediately think when you hear the news?

  78. You're always thinking that they're giving their spin.

  79. That's a very polite way of talking about manipulating the truth

  80. for their particular side or their preference.

  81. Isn't that right?

  82. Have you ever heard the saying that statistics never lie,

  83. but liars use statistics?

  84. It's amazing how adept we can be at framing an argument

  85. or forming the idea that we want to communicate

  86. and then casting it out there and thinking,

  87. well, Lee, we pulled that off.

  88. I also get a chuckle out of those people

  89. who in their brassy arrogance will make statements like this,

  90. well, at least I never lie.

  91. Have you ever heard anybody like that?

  92. At least I never lie.

  93. That person is a lie walking

  94. because when they say I never lie,

  95. what they're really saying is that I use the truth

  96. to manipulate the situation to serve myself.

  97. And when I dump on you or when I smack you like I do

  98. and I kind of hide behind that argument of,

  99. hey, at least I never lie, I'm all about me.

  100. And my dark, nasty little heart is taking advantage

  101. of using a portion of the truth to use it to my advantage.

  102. Well, I want to stop and ask ourselves the question,

  103. why does Paul start with lying?

  104. I want you to think here just for a moment

  105. and understand this truth.

  106. Our mouth is the primary advertisement of our character.

  107. Our mouth is the primary advertisement of our character.

  108. And Paul puts what comes out of our mouth

  109. as the first thing on the list of things

  110. that are to be different

  111. because we've been converted by the cross.

  112. Paul wants us to understand

  113. that what comes out of the mouth of the believer,

  114. listen to me carefully,

  115. is to be different.

  116. Isn't that right?

  117. So what happened after you got saved?

  118. Well, I started speaking differently.

  119. Right?

  120. If God has the power to save,

  121. should He make a change in your tongue?

  122. And the answer from all of God's people is,

  123. you betcha.

  124. In fact, if there is no evidence of a change

  125. from what is happening on your tongue,

  126. you better go back and ask the Father,

  127. what's going on here?

  128. Now, am I suggesting that all of it changes immediately?

  129. And what is the answer?

  130. No.

  131. But here's the truth.

  132. There should be a difference

  133. in what comes out of your mouth.

  134. A lying Christian,

  135. I want you to understand this,

  136. insults the Father

  137. and raises a question of pedigree.

  138. A lying Christian

  139. insults the Father

  140. and raises a question of pedigree.

  141. Now, why would I say pedigree?

  142. Because here's the deal.

  143. Jesus, when He was speaking about Satan,

  144. He said,

  145. Satan is the...

  146. What?

  147. Does anybody remember?

  148. He is the father of lies,

  149. and it goes on to say this,

  150. and He really speaks according to His character.

  151. Satan just lies because that's who he is.

  152. He's a liar.

  153. And when he opens his mouth,

  154. guess what comes out?

  155. Just the standard old thing.

  156. It's a lie.

  157. As a side note,

  158. don't go huffing and puffing out of here

  159. deciding that what you're going to do

  160. is be unkind and brutal with your truth

  161. and then hide behind the fact

  162. that you're not a person who lies anymore.

  163. I want to remind you of what it says in verse 15.

  164. It says this,

  165. Rather speaking the truth in what?

  166. In love.

  167. We're to speak the truth in love.

  168. Now, we do come to a very interesting statement

  169. in this matter of lying

  170. and the matter of speaking the truth

  171. because we recognize here

  172. that wholesome body life

  173. depends on loving truthfulness.

  174. Mark what it says in verse 25.

  175. Put away lying, falsehood.

  176. Let each of you speak truth with his what?

  177. His neighbor.

  178. Neighbor isn't close enough

  179. and he says this,

  180. For we are members one of another.

  181. There is a far greater connectedness

  182. in the thinking of the apostle

  183. than most of us

  184. when it comes to the matter

  185. of the way we speak to each other.

  186. As I was thinking about this

  187. today,

  188. earlier in the morning,

  189. I was thinking of how

  190. the physical body,

  191. thankfully, in my case,

  192. the brain kind of is all connected

  193. and controls everything else,

  194. but as a result of that interconnection,

  195. my right hand and my left hand

  196. have some moderate sensitivity

  197. to one another

  198. and they behave

  199. according to that sensitivity.

  200. Just imagine that the right hand

  201. gets a little irritated

  202. with something that the left hand does.

  203. And so the right hand

  204. picks up a hammer

  205. and says,

  206. Well, I'm going to be truthful with you

  207. and since you messed up,

  208. I'm going to just give you

  209. a little gentle love tap

  210. right there on the digit

  211. so you get the memo

  212. that this is not acceptable.

  213. You know, it's a,

  214. Ah!

  215. What is going on?

  216. Paul says,

  217. Listen, think about this.

  218. He says,

  219. You are to be truthful

  220. with one another

  221. because you are connected.

  222. One of the sadder things

  223. that I have had to deal with,

  224. one of the,

  225. we're in the process,

  226. we're searching for a family

  227. youth pastor.

  228. And I really didn't realize

  229. how unusual it is

  230. for pastors to stay.

  231. Now,

  232. I've had more men,

  233. I can't believe you've stayed,

  234. I can't believe you've stayed.

  235. One of the things

  236. that has been sad to me

  237. is the number of times

  238. I've seen people leave this church

  239. and go somewhere else

  240. because of some things

  241. that others in the body

  242. have said to them.

  243. I remember sitting in a home

  244. where an individual

  245. brought something up

  246. that had happened

  247. and I asked the question,

  248. When did this happen?

  249. Because I had,

  250. I'd only been here

  251. like about 11 or 12 years

  252. and this person said,

  253. 17 years ago.

  254. And they were filled with,

  255. with a,

  256. an embittered spirit

  257. at just bringing it up.

  258. Well,

  259. for one thing,

  260. I thought to myself,

  261. wow,

  262. if,

  263. if it bothered you

  264. for 17 long years,

  265. shame on you

  266. for not dealing

  267. with it biblically.

  268. Now,

  269. Paul says this,

  270. he says,

  271. listen,

  272. when you speak to one another,

  273. speak to one another

  274. with respect

  275. to your relationship

  276. in the family of God.

  277. Some of you know Kenoyers,

  278. others of you don't,

  279. but the Kenoyers

  280. are fairly straightforward people

  281. when it really comes

  282. to within family dynamics,

  283. but I'll tell you what,

  284. we don't pull off

  285. drive-by shootings

  286. with each other.

  287. And the reason we don't

  288. pull off drive-by shootings

  289. is because we know

  290. we're going to be together

  291. until they put one

  292. or the other

  293. in a pine box.

  294. So I want you to mark

  295. the focus of the Spirit

  296. of God here.

  297. Loving truthfulness

  298. is a church life

  299. and health thing.

  300. That's what the Spirit

  301. is saying here

  302. at the moment

  303. in verse 25.

  304. So when was the last time

  305. you thought about

  306. telling the truth

  307. with a quiet,

  308. gentle spirit

  309. because you had really

  310. thought out

  311. how does my being truthful

  312. help the body?

  313. Most of us tend to think

  314. about using the truth

  315. in a narrow perspective

  316. of how it suits us

  317. or our agenda.

  318. What we want.

  319. Let me spell out

  320. several principles

  321. to help you

  322. with truthfulness

  323. in the body.

  324. First of all

  325. would be start

  326. with your own walk.

  327. Matthew chapter 7

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  328. Jesus says,

  329. hey, before you go

  330. do brain surgery

  331. on somebody else,

  332. that's not the passage

  333. but you understand

  334. the point.

  335. Matthew chapter 7

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  336. what do you deal with?

  337. You deal with something

  338. in your own eye

  339. before you try to go

  340. help somebody else.

  341. In Galatians chapter 6

    Galatians 6:1

  342. verse 1 and 2

  343. it says,

  344. when you see someone

  345. who's been overtaken

  346. with a fault,

  347. you who are spiritual

  348. do what?

  349. Restore such a one

  350. with a spirit

  351. of meekness.

  352. Secondly,

  353. really be about the body

  354. not yourself.

  355. How does this issue

  356. that I'm addressing

  357. have bearing

  358. on the well-being

  359. of the bride?

  360. How does it relate

  361. to the family

  362. of God

  363. that He has made me

  364. to be part of?

  365. Third,

  366. don't be a drive-by shooter.

  367. You know what I mean

  368. by a drive-by shooter?

  369. Well, I told him.

  370. You know,

  371. kind of,

  372. it's like trick-or-treat.

  373. You know,

  374. you ring the doorbell

  375. and leave.

  376. And that's not

  377. what Paul has in mind here

  378. when he says,

  379. let every man speak truth

  380. with his neighbor.

  381. He's not talking about

  382. kind of an unkind

  383. little broadside

  384. in which you really

  385. nail the person

  386. to the wall

  387. and all that

  388. vituperative attitude

  389. that's kind of built up

  390. inside,

  391. it kind of blows up

  392. and everybody gets

  393. fragged in the process.

  394. That's not it.

  395. I remind you also

  396. of the fact

  397. that when we speak

  398. the truth,

  399. we are to bring

  400. the grace of Christ

  401. and His Word

  402. into play.

  403. Let me make an appeal.

  404. I want you to turn

  405. in your Bibles.

  406. I'm going to come back

  407. to this passage again,

  408. but this is a passage

  409. that last week

  410. just got a hold of me

  411. in a fashion

  412. that really has gripped me.

  413. Isaiah chapter 50,

    Isaiah 50:4

  414. verse 4.

  415. Isaiah,

  416. here,

  417. hey,

  418. you want a verse

  419. to memorize?

  420. This one.

  421. This one.

  422. Isaiah 50,

  423. verse,

  424. go ahead and look at it.

  425. It's not going to be

  426. on the screen.

  427. Is it, Connie?

  428. It's not going to be

  429. on the screen.

  430. I didn't plan

  431. for it to be on the screen.

  432. So it's not going

  433. to be on the screen.

  434. You have to use

  435. your own Bible.

  436. If you don't have one,

  437. there's one in the pew

  438. in front of you,

  439. or you can ask your name.

  440. Go ahead,

  441. grab the other person's Bible

  442. and pull it over.

  443. And it's like,

  444. I'm Sharon.

  445. I didn't know

  446. we'd need a Bible

  447. when we came.

  448. Yeah, you do.

  449. Okay.

  450. Isaiah 50,

    Isaiah 50:4

  451. verse 4.

  452. The Lord God

  453. has given me

  454. the tongue

  455. of those who are taught

  456. that I may know

  457. how to sustain

  458. with a word

  459. him who is weary.

  460. Morning by morning

  461. he awakens me.

  462. He awakens my ear

  463. to hear

  464. as those

  465. who are taught.

  466. Keep your finger

  467. in this passage.

  468. Turn over in your Bible,

  469. if you would,

  470. to John chapter 12.

    John 12 chapter mention

  471. By the way,

  472. the passage that

  473. we have just looked at

  474. in Isaiah

  475. is a messianic passage.

  476. That means that it has

  477. direct application

  478. to Christ.

  479. But over in John chapter 12,

    John 12:49

  480. verse 49,

  481. Jesus says something

  482. that is rather interesting.

  483. He says this,

  484. For I have not spoken

  485. on my own authority,

  486. but the Father

  487. who sent me

  488. has himself

  489. given me a commandment,

  490. what to say

  491. and what to speak.

  492. Are you thinking with me?

  493. Jesus says,

  494. I'm not out here

  495. freestyling

  496. and saying what I think.

  497. I am speaking

  498. according

  499. to what the Father

  500. wants me to say.

  501. How did that happen?

  502. How did that happen?

  503. If you look back

  504. at the passage

  505. in Isaiah chapter 50,

    Isaiah 50 chapter mention

  506. Jesus says this.

  507. This passage

  508. was written of him.

  509. God has given me

  510. the tongue

  511. of those

  512. who are taught.

  513. And when did I learn

  514. what was the right thing

  515. to say?

  516. Morning by morning

  517. he awakens.

  518. He awakens

  519. my ear

  520. to hear

  521. as those who are taught.

  522. Listen to me.

  523. Sidebar.

  524. I shared this

  525. in Sunday school,

  526. but the truth

  527. of the matter is

  528. is that

  529. the biggest problem

  530. most of us have

  531. with sin

  532. is with our tongue.

  533. Is that true?

  534. Oh no,

  535. I have a big problem

  536. with murderous thoughts,

  537. not with my tongue.

  538. No,

  539. that's not true.

  540. James says this.

  541. If you can handle

  542. the tongue,

  543. you're on top

  544. of the game,

  545. right?

  546. Isn't that

  547. free translation there?

  548. Some of you

  549. would tweak me afterwards.

  550. My email,

  551. send it to me.

  552. But,

  553. you know,

  554. James says this.

  555. If any man doesn't

  556. offend with his tongue,

  557. he's got it together.

  558. I tell you what,

  559. I have more verses

  560. memorized on the tongue

  561. than on any other part

  562. of the spiritual walk

  563. for Tim Kenoyard.

  564. You know why?

  565. Because I can say

  566. some awful things

  567. without practice.

  568. Years ago,

  569. it became evident to me

  570. that my tongue

  571. was not what it should be

  572. and I began saying,

  573. how do I change this?

  574. I could be funny.

  575. I could be sarcastic.

  576. I could be critical.

  577. I specialized in figuring out

  578. what people's weak spots were

  579. and when I wanted to,

  580. I could bring those up

  581. and I could cut them to shreds.

  582. And I began memorizing

  583. bunches of passages

  584. of Scripture

  585. about the tongue.

  586. And when I read this passage

  587. in Isaiah,

  588. morning by morning,

  589. he awakens me.

  590. He awakens my ear.

  591. Isaiah,

  592. Ephesians rather,

  593. five or four.

  594. Let's look at a second thing

  595. that Paul talks about.

  596. He says here,

  597. he says,

  598. you're to speak truth

  599. because we're neighbors,

  600. but then he says,

  601. be angry and do not sin.

  602. So,

  603. conversion moves us

  604. from harmful anger

  605. to godly response.

  606. And some of you are thinking,

  607. well, now we're coming

  608. to a verse I can deal with.

  609. Yeah,

  610. get angry.

  611. I've done that.

  612. I put holes in drywall.

  613. I put my foot through a door.

  614. Now,

  615. I'm not talking about

  616. Tim Kenoyer,

  617. but some of you

  618. sitting there thinking,

  619. yeah, yeah, yeah.

  620. Go for it, pastor.

  621. Preach that one.

  622. Now,

  623. here's the deal.

  624. Anger is actually

  625. more complex

  626. than we might think.

  627. It's a response

  628. to a perceived offense

  629. or threat.

  630. Anger is really

  631. a human emotion

  632. and it's not

  633. necessarily sinful.

  634. Jesus was angry

  635. on more than one occasion.

  636. For one,

  637. it tells us

  638. that when he cleansed

  639. the temple,

  640. that made him angry

  641. to see what people

  642. were doing

  643. to his father's house.

  644. But another illustration

  645. is over in Mark chapter 3

    Mark 3 chapter mention

  646. when he looked at

  647. the hardness

  648. of the hearts

  649. of the Pharisees

  650. in the face

  651. of his healing

  652. and it says

  653. he got angry with them.

  654. Being angry

  655. about some things

  656. is essential

  657. and necessary.

  658. For example,

  659. we should be angry

  660. when God is offended.

  661. We should be angry

  662. when sin

  663. raises its ugly head.

  664. I did not watch

  665. Miley Cyrus last week

  666. and I did not click

  667. on any of the videos

  668. related to what happened.

  669. but I was angered

  670. by the incessant

  671. twittering

  672. and the incessant

  673. conversation

  674. about something

  675. that was so vile

  676. and so disgusting

  677. to the Lord.

  678. Now there's something else

  679. that really should

  680. get us going.

  681. Are you listening?

  682. We're fairly good

  683. at getting angry

  684. about other people's sin.

  685. Do you follow that?

  686. We're horrible

  687. about getting angry

  688. about our own.

  689. And if you turn

  690. in your Bible,

  691. you're in Ephesians

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  692. chapter 5,

  693. just keep your finger

  694. there because we're

  695. coming back,

  696. but go back

  697. to a passage

  698. in 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 7:9–11

  699. chapter 7

  700. verse 9 through 11.

  701. By the way,

  702. this is probably

  703. one of those

  704. go-to passages

  705. when you're trying

  706. to really figure out

  707. am I serious

  708. about changing?

  709. Am I really serious

  710. about my sin?

  711. Or am I kind of

  712. coasting through,

  713. kind of playing

  714. spiritual games?

  715. I'm not really into this.

  716. See, we're all

  717. dealing with the problem

  718. of indwelling sin.

  719. We're dealing with

  720. the battle in our own life.

  721. 2 Corinthians chapter 7

    2 Corinthians 7 chapter mention

  722. describes the characteristics

  723. of genuine repentance.

  724. 9 through 11.

  725. Paul says this.

  726. He says,

  727. As for me,

  728. I rejoice not because

  729. you were grieved,

  730. but because you were

  731. grieved unto repenting.

  732. For you felt a godly grief

  733. so that you suffered

  734. no loss through us.

  735. For godly grief

  736. produces a repentance

  737. that leads to salvation

  738. without regret,

  739. whereas worldly grief

  740. produces death.

  741. See what earnestness

  742. this godly grief

  743. has produced in you,

  744. but also what eagerness

  745. to clear yourself,

  746. what indignation.

  747. Now,

  748. who are you indignant with?

  749. Yourself.

  750. I cannot believe

  751. that I have dishonored Christ.

  752. I cannot believe

  753. the offense

  754. that my sin is

  755. against the holy God.

  756. I am appalled with that.

  757. Well,

  758. I do want you to understand

  759. that while there are times

  760. for us to be angry,

  761. there are also times

  762. where anger is wrong,

  763. anger is wrong,

  764. and it's sinful.

  765. And such anger

  766. has no place

  767. in the believer's life.

  768. Being all stirred up

  769. about not getting your way,

  770. being all in a turmoil

  771. because of an offense

  772. that you've endured

  773. or a disappointment

  774. or because someone

  775. has done something

  776. that was harmful to you,

  777. you have to stop

  778. and ask yourself,

  779. and say,

  780. what am I getting angry about,

  781. really?

  782. Is this something

  783. that really at the heart

  784. of it tweaks me

  785. because I'm so supremely

  786. concerned about

  787. the glory of Christ

  788. and the importance

  789. of God

  790. that that's why I'm upset?

  791. No, no, no.

  792. Most of the time

  793. we're stomping around

  794. and we've got a pout

  795. on our face

  796. because of us.

  797. I do want you

  798. to mark something else

  799. in the passage

  800. going back to 1 Corinthians.

  801. It says,

  802. don't let the sun

  803. go down on your wrath.

  804. Be angry and sin not.

  805. Don't let the sun

  806. go down on your wrath.

  807. Well, that means

  808. that if somebody

  809. offends me,

  810. I'd better get it settled

  811. and take it out on them

  812. by the end of the day.

  813. That's not what it's saying.

  814. It's saying this,

  815. that neglecting

  816. that which has been

  817. perceived as an offense

  818. will allow it to fester.

  819. Things that fester

  820. cause heartache.

  821. So when something

  822. is really bothering you,

  823. there are a couple things

  824. that I would encourage you

  825. to do in relationship

  826. to that.

  827. For one,

  828. deal with it.

  829. Deal with it.

  830. Deal with it now.

  831. Deal with it in the context

  832. in which it happened.

  833. Now,

  834. a preface to that

  835. would be that

  836. when you find yourself

  837. all stirred up,

  838. none of us struggle

  839. with anger.

  840. We're good Christians

  841. and all that.

  842. But when you see

  843. somebody else stirred up,

  844. you want to talk to them

  845. and say,

  846. take a minute,

  847. take a deep breath,

  848. pray a little bit

  849. and say,

  850. Lord,

  851. is there anything

  852. that I need to work on

  853. in my life

  854. before I go launch

  855. and help somebody else?

  856. Quiet yourself

  857. before the Lord

  858. and say,

  859. hey,

  860. I need help here

  861. before I go do anything.

  862. Sometimes it takes

  863. a time of prayer

  864. and some planning

  865. before you go deal with it.

  866. I have to tell you

  867. that as a parent,

  868. I would almost,

  869. as I got older,

  870. in my younger days,

  871. I didn't practice

  872. this as much,

  873. but as I got older,

  874. when my kids

  875. would do something wrong,

  876. I would send them upstairs.

  877. I'd say,

  878. I want you to go upstairs

  879. and spend some time

  880. thinking and praying.

  881. Guess what I was doing?

  882. I was doing that

  883. because generally,

  884. unfortunately,

  885. I would probably

  886. let it go a little too far

  887. and then I would really

  888. get irritated with the fact,

  889. why didn't they just

  890. listen to what I said

  891. and if they were following

  892. my instruction,

  893. wouldn't I,

  894. and I was right at,

  895. I'm ready to deal with it

  896. and I'd go upstairs

  897. and pray myself

  898. and then go take care of it.

  899. Well,

  900. when it says,

  901. don't let the sun

  902. go down on your wrath,

  903. what do you do

  904. when you can't really

  905. deal with the problem?

  906. How many of you

  907. had people

  908. who were your superiors

  909. that did something wrong

  910. and made you angry

  911. and you knew

  912. that it was going to be

  913. a deal breaker,

  914. a show stopper,

  915. you're going to be

  916. out the door

  917. if you really went

  918. and let them have it,

  919. right?

  920. Tried to solve the problem.

  921. Sometimes there are things

  922. we can't solve

  923. and when we can't solve it,

  924. God says it's His business.

  925. Look in the Bible,

  926. if you will,

  927. just for a moment

  928. over to a passage

  929. in Romans chapter 12,

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  930. Romans chapter 12,

    Romans 12:19

  931. verse 19.

  932. This is one that you may want

  933. to underline

  934. and have somebody else memorize.

  935. Beloved,

  936. verse 19,

  937. never avenge yourself.

  938. See,

  939. some of the times

  940. when our anger gets cooked,

  941. our anger will only be satisfied

  942. once we really let them know

  943. that they did wrong.

  944. Oh, I'm sorry.

  945. How can I,

  946. you know,

  947. that we want to solve the problem.

  948. Sometimes you can't do that

  949. and Paul says this,

  950. hey, listen,

  951. never go after revenge.

  952. But leave it to the wrath of God

  953. for it is written,

  954. vengeance is mine,

  955. I will repay,

  956. saith the Lord.

  957. Sometimes what we do

  958. in that day

  959. before the sun goes down,

  960. we say,

  961. God,

  962. this is your problem.

  963. I'm going to let you have it.

  964. It's not my problem.

  965. I'll go ahead

  966. and talk about it a little bit.

  967. I happen to think

  968. that the NCAA

  969. did not deal with

  970. Johnny Manziel

  971. the way they've dealt

  972. with many other individuals

  973. when it comes to

  974. violating NCAA standards.

  975. And I see some people

  976. hyperventilating

  977. on Facebook about it

  978. and I thought to myself,

  979. you know what?

  980. Not worth the trouble

  981. because here's the deal.

  982. I happen to know

  983. that Scripture says

  984. God lifts up

  985. the humble.

  986. He does what

  987. to the arrogant?

  988. He deals with the proud.

  989. So it's like,

  990. God,

  991. He's yours.

  992. Oh, by the way,

  993. there is one little prayer

  994. to follow after with this.

  995. Are you listening?

  996. And be as merciful

  997. to Him

  998. as you've been to me.

  999. Can you do that?

  1000. And be as merciful

  1001. to Him

1002. as you've been with me.

  1003. Right?

  1004. Right?

  1005. We can say that.

  1006. Oh, Lord,

  1007. I'm handing this off

1008. and I want these people

  1009. dealt with

  1010. like Sodom and Gomorrah

  1011. and I'm giving you 24.

  1012. Now,

  1013. what you do

  1014. is the last part

  1015. of the prayer

1016. is part of the keeper.

  1017. It's like,

  1018. and Lord,

  1019. be as merciful

  1020. to Him

  1021. as you have been

  1022. to me.

  1023. Well,

  1024. this morning

  1025. what we've done

  1026. is we've talked about

  1027. the fact that

  1028. the believer's tongue

  1029. is different.

  1030. Amen?

  1031. Are you there yet?

  1032. No.

  1033. But when we realize

  1034. that our tongue

1035. is not what it ought to be,

  1036. what do we do?

1037. Here's what the believer does.

  1038. Number one,

  1039. the believer

  1040. is convicted

1041. by the power of God

  1042. to say,

  1043. I'm not there yet.

  1044. Help me grow.

  1045. Amen?

  1046. I want to change.

  1047. I want to change.

  1048. I want to change.

  1049. It wouldn't be a bad idea

1050. for you who are believers

1051. to say to your husband

  1052. or your wife

  1053. as you're driving home

  1054. in the car,

  1055. so,

  1056. so,

  1057. how's my tongue doing?

  1058. Do you follow that?

  1059. I,

  1060. I,

  1061. go ahead.

  1062. Yeah.

  1063. Nudge him and say,

  1064. you can ask me.

  1065. Okay.

  1066. See,

  1067. the believer says,

  1068. I want to grow.

  1069. If the tongue

  1070. is the thing

  1071. that makes Jesus

  1072. look good,

  1073. bring it on.

  1074. Help me change.

  1075. change.

  1076. And if I've got

  1077. this problem

  1078. with

  1079. being all

  1080. stirred up,

  1081. Lord,

  1082. for me to stump

  1083. and stomp around

  1084. like a happy Christian

  1085. all lit

  1086. because of things

  1087. not going my way,

  1088. help me change.

  1089. Why?

  1090. Do you think

  1091. angels get excited

  1092. at junkyard war

  1093. type of

  1094. kludgy machines

  1095. being put together

  1096. out of trash

  1097. that kind of

  1098. flounder around

  1099. and don't look good?

  1100. No.

  1101. They,

  1102. they get excited

  1103. when they see

  1104. the dramatic

  1105. power of Christ

  1106. that can change

  1107. broken,

  1108. ruined sinners

  1109. and make them

  1110. something different.

  1111. Amen.

  1112. Amen.

  1113. Amen.

  1114. There's no reason

  1115. for you to be

  1116. bad advertisement

  1117. when you have

  1118. received the gift

  1119. of salvation

  1120. and you have

  1121. received the gift

  1122. of the indwelling

  1123. Spirit of God

  1124. who's there

  1125. to help you

  1126. be different.

  1127. Let's close

  1128. in prayer.

  1129. As the

  1130. baptismal

  1131. candidates come,

  1132. you pray for

  1133. their testimony

  1134. and for the

  1135. clarity of the

  1136. gospel this

  1137. morning.

  1138. Precious

  1139. Father,

  1140. make us

  1141. a people

  1142. who are

  1143. jealous

  1144. for the

  1145. glory

  1146. of Christ.

  1147. Pray for

  1148. Mrs.

  1149. Malumba

  1150. and for

  1151. Isaac

  1152. sake,

  1153. that their

  1154. testimonies

  1155. speak of

  1156. their faith

  1157. in the

  1158. Lord Jesus

  1159. Christ.

  1160. That those

  1161. who are

  1162. here that

  1163. know the

  1164. Lord Jesus

  1165. would have

  1166. hearts that

  1167. just rejoice

  1168. and those

  1169. who are

  1170. here who

  1171. need Christ

  1172. would be

  1173. drawn to

  1174. the cross.

  1175. We ask

  1176. this in

  1177. your precious

  1178. name.

  1179. Amen.
