  1. Church is helping to train pastors in Romania and in the Middle East and in Mongolia.

  2. ! You're helping to raise up missionaries to go to different places.

  3. ! When I hear what Walid has done among the Muslims and others and what Doug is doing,

  4. and I know what is happening in Romania, and the fact that you have a huge part in that,

  5. in supporting all of us to be able to be there, and then in your prayers,

  6. you are a part of that.

  7. And I hope you feel that this week, that this has been a chance for you to be encouraged,

  8. what God has done through you and through your prayers.

  9. And I just praise God for you, and I hope you've been encouraged by that.

  10. You are allowed to amen to that, by the way.

  11. You know, as I prepared the sermon, I asked my family.

  12. They did not know what the theme of the conference was,

  13. but they knew what the sermon was that I wanted to bring forth to you this morning.

  14. And they came up with How to Love the Unbeliever.

  15. Now, that's pretty close to the title of the conference, isn't it?

  16. And so I believe that God has put this together for this conference,

  17. and I want to share it with you.

  18. If you will turn in your Bibles to the book of 1 Timothy,

  19. I'm going to have you follow along with me.

  20. But I want to start with a way of introduction about some things that sometimes we have Christianese,

  21. that we're so used to, words we're so accustomed to,

  22. that I just want to clarify one of those before we get started,

  23. and that's the word lost.

  24. Loving the lost.

  25. Now, to those of us who are believers in Jesus Christ,

  26. who realize that at some point in our life we were lost,

  27. we were dead in our sins,

  28. we did not know what to do,

  29. how to handle this debt of sin,

  30. what it was going to mean for the future,

  31. and then the truth was brought to us,

  32. and we received Jesus Christ,

  33. the word lost to us almost has an endearing term of,

  34. I was lost, but now I'm found,

  35. and we're not embarrassed.

  36. It brings memories of grace to us.

  37. But what about to the lost person?

  38. When we say we're here to love the lost,

  39. and if you're sitting here today,

  40. and I hope there are several here today,

  41. that need Jesus Christ,

  42. and you hear us talk about the word lost,

  43. what does that mean to you?

  44. There are two responses that you can have to that.

  45. To the person who realizes they're lost,

  46. we're kind of glad that somebody recognizes we're lost.

  47. You ever been lost driving,

  48. and you have that look on your face like...

  49. And somebody walks up and says,

  50. excuse me, are you lost?

  51. That moment of relief that somebody recognizes I'm lost,

  52. and they must, if they're asking, they have an answer.

  53. You understand?

  54. But at the same moment,

  55. you're not like, yes, I'm lost.

  56. It's that, yeah.

  57. There is an issue of humility that comes with that.

  58. When you recognize you're lost,

  59. you're glad that there's an answer,

  60. but there's a humility, a humbleness that you feel,

  61. because you know you're lost.

  62. What about to the lost person who doesn't know they're lost?

  63. Ever been there?

  64. I've done that, driving in a bad snowstorm.

  65. Actually, my son was driving.

  66. He was 16, and I wanted him to have winter experience.

  67. And so we were driving through a Chicago blizzard,

  68. headed up north, and we were going to go skiing.

  69. After a men's retreat, we were headed north,

  70. we were going to go skiing in Cadillac, Michigan.

  71. So we're driving, and we're just,

  72. we had the GPS on,

  73. and it was in the back on a laptop computer

  74. with a little thing that sat on,

  75. a Bluetooth thing that sat on the dash.

  76. And we just, I said, Dave, just drive.

  77. Now snow is coming.

  78. And it was great for him to drive,

  79. because nobody else was on the road.

  80. They were smart.

  81. So we're driving,

  82. and we went about 45 minutes where we saw nobody.

  83. I mean, there were car tire marks on the road,

  84. and then there were car and truck tire marks on the road.

  85. Then there were just truck tire marks on the road.

  86. Then there were truck marks and snowmobile tracks on the road.

  87. Then there were just snowmobile tracks,

  88. and then they quit.

  89. And we're still driving.

  90. I thought I knew where we were.

  91. And he said,

  92. it was about eight inches of snow now,

  93. and he's got to keep it up to 45 miles an hour in the snow to keep moving.

  94. He goes,

  95. Dad, I don't know if I can do this much longer.

  96. And I said,

  97. all right, I'll drive.

  98. And I looked back at the GPS,

  99. because we were waiting for it to talk to me and tell us when to turn.

  100. And it said,

  101. GPS signal lost 45 minutes ago.

  102. Okay, so I was lost and didn't know it.

  103. So suppose for a minute somebody comes to you and says,

  104. oh, are you lost?

  105. And they recognize you're in the wrong area.

  106. But you don't think so.

  107. There's not that humble, oh, yes.

  108. It's like, what are you talking about?

  109. I know what I'm doing.

  110. I know where I'm going.

  111. The word lost becomes offensive.

  112. You understand?

  113. So what I want you to know that when we say lost,

  114. we're not here to offend you.

  115. But if you don't know Jesus Christ as your personal Savior,

  116. that is a term that we believe identifies you.

  117. And we hope that you will recognize by that sentence,

  118. loving the lost.

  119. We're not condemning you for being lost.

  120. We're loving you because of that position.

  121. And I hope you understand that as we go into today's sermon.

  122. We've heard a lot in the last few days about what God is doing.

  123. And I had one person tell me, he said,

  124. when you guys start listing the things that you're doing,

  125. we know you're not telling us everything.

  126. We get tired listening.

  127. Do you think that we ever get weary doing missionary work?

  128. Do you ever get tired doing the work that God's called you to do right here?

  129. The answer to that is absolutely.

  130. I want you to look at 1 Timothy in chapter 1.

  131. I believe Timothy was in a state like that.

  132. Now when we read this, starting with verse 1,

  133. it says,

  134. Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus,

  135. by the command of God our Savior,

  136. and of Christ Jesus our hope,

  137. to Timothy, my true son in the faith,

  138. grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

  139. As I urged you when I went into Macedonia,

  140. stay there in Ephesus,

  141. so that you may command certain men not to teach false doctrines any longer,

  142. nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies.

  143. These promote controversies rather than God's work, which is by faith.

  144. Now does it tell us in that verse, or in those verses,

  145. the mental state or the emotional state of Timothy?

  146. Does it say anything about that?

  147. No.

  148. Then why is it that I think he was about ready to give up and throw in the towel?

  149. Now, what was Paul urging him to do?

  150. I had to stay there.

  151. Well, if Paul is urging him to stay there,

  152. what might Timothy be thinking about doing?

  153. Not staying there, right?

  154. Now this is the first time that Paul has had to say this to Timothy, right?

  155. What did the verse say?

  156. As I urged you before, right?

  157. So is this the first time Paul's had to bring this up to Timothy?

  158. It's at least the second time, right?

  159. So at least twice now, Paul has come to Timothy and said,

  160. Timothy, Timothy, as I told you before, my dear son in the Lord,

  161. stay there.

  162. Don't leave.

  163. Now, why was Timothy even interested in leaving?

  164. Did you know that most missionaries that come off the field,

  165. when it's because a lot of it's sometimes health reasons and other things,

  166. very rarely is it because of conflict with nationals.

  167. You know, usually it's conflict with other missionaries.

  168. Did you know that?

  169. That that's where a lot of the conflicts happen.

  170. You know, when you talk about ministers who are burned out,

  171. rarely are they burned out because there's just so much happening that's good

  172. and so much fruit is being produced that it burns them out.

  173. Usually it's when they're working and working and working

  174. and they're not able to see the fruit yet.

  175. And sometimes it just, you have to till that ground because it's hard

  176. and you've got to fertilize it and you have to persevere

  177. and you've got to stick to it.

  178. Not seeing immediate fruit does not mean you're in the wrong place.

  179. But when you work and you work and you work

  180. and you don't see the fruit and you're like,

  181. what is this ever going to quit?

  182. That's when it's easy to face burnout.

  183. And Timothy, I believe, since it's the same issue coming up,

  184. had dealt with these people that were in his church,

  185. that were teaching false doctrines,

  186. that he's dealing with this problem.

  187. He's like, at some point, I can't seem to get through to them.

  188. I give up. I'm done. I want to go.

  189. And he was burned out.

  190. He was tired.

  191. Paul comes in and he says,

  192. I urge you, Timothy, as I did before.

  193. I'm going to try to encourage you, Timothy.

  194. I want you to stay there.

  195. I know it's tough.

  196. But this is what God has called you to do.

  197. Timothy, stay there.

  198. Stay there and do what?

  199. Like, learn to tolerate them?

  200. Is that what it says?

  201. Stay there and learn tolerance, Timothy,

  202. because then everyone will be happy.

  203. He says, stay there and command them.

  204. It's a very authoritative word.

  205. There are many words in the New Testament

  206. translated into the English word command.

  207. And this one is a very authoritative military command.

  208. Command them to stop teaching the false doctrine.

  209. Timothy, get a handle on the situation.

  210. I know it's hard.

  211. I know you're worn out.

  212. I know you don't want to get into that battle again.

  213. You don't think you're going to win.

  214. But Timothy, Paul says, my dear son in the faith,

  215. get in there and win this one.

  216. Defend the faith.

  217. And if you look at 1 and 2 Timothy,

  218. the theme throughout both of these is doctrine.

  219. And how important doctrine and true doctrine is

  220. and how it relates to the way we live our Christian life.

  221. Now, all that is background

  222. for what I want to talk to you about this morning.

  223. A key verse for me is in verse 5.

  224. It says, the goal of this command is what?

  225. I want you to say it.

  226. The goal of this command is love.

  227. Which command?

  228. The command to stay there and deal with the problem?

  229. Did Paul command Timothy to stay there?

  230. No, he didn't command him.

  231. What did he do?

  232. He urged him.

  233. What's the only command here?

  234. Commanding the false teachers

  235. to stop teaching false doctrine.

  236. The goal of that command is not

  237. so that ministry will be easier for you, Timothy,

  238. because they'll stop being the resistance.

  239. The goal of the command is love.

  240. Love for that person who right now

  241. seems to be your enemy.

  242. The one who's causing you the problems.

  243. Do you know anybody like that?

  244. That causes problems?

  245. That in your way,

  246. when you're trying to do what's right

  247. and they're in your way?

  248. You're like, oh God,

  249. if you would just remove them

  250. from the situation.

  251. Imagine,

  252. and Paul tells Timothy,

  253. Timothy,

  254. that the goal of commanding them

  255. to stop teaching false doctrine,

  256. to confront them

  257. and deal with what truth is,

  258. the goal of that command is love.

  259. It's love.

  260. Keep reading.

  261. The goal of this command is love,

  262. which comes from a pure heart.

  263. Not one who's seeking

  264. its own comfort,

  265. its own desires,

  266. but one who's seeking the comfort

  267. or the desires or the needs of who?

  268. Someone else.

  269. And we're going to talk about

  270. who that someone else is

  271. in just a moment.

  272. It comes from a good conscience,

  273. knowing that you are standing clear

  274. before God

  275. in doing what you're supposed to do

  276. and of a sincere faith

  277. because,

  278. Timothy,

  279. you're going to have to look at these guys

  280. you don't think are ever going to change.

  281. Man,

  282. they have dug in their heels

  283. and they're standing firm

  284. in their false doctrine

  285. and they're teaching other people

  286. and you've got to get in there

  287. and tell them to quit teaching other people.

  288. This is a church

  289. where you're going to teach the truth

  290. and you've got to get in there

  291. and tell them to stop.

  292. But,

  293. but,

  294. but Paul,

  295. you don't know these guys.

  296. Man,

  297. I've talked to them before

  298. and they don't listen.

  299. Well,

  300. listen,

  301. Timothy,

  302. you need to do this

  303. but you're going to have to do it

  304. with sincere faith.

  305. Believing that God can change

  306. even those guys.

  307. Is there anybody that you know

  308. that is such a sinner

  309. you just can't believe

  310. that they would ever accept Jesus Christ?

  311. Man,

  312. they're just so hard and fast

  313. in their ways.

  314. They're so dogmatic

  315. about what they believe.

  316. Believe me,

  317. God's changed worse.

  318. Do you believe that?

  319. Then do you believe that God

  320. can change that person

  321. you're thinking about?

  322. A sincere faith says,

  323. you know what,

  324. I'm going to go into this

  325. knowing it's not me

  326. that's ever going to change one person

  327. but God can change anyone.

  328. And so this is what Paul

  329. is telling Timothy.

  330. He says,

  331. Timothy,

  332. the goal of this

  333. is love.

  334. Now I want you to see

  335. how Paul

  336. teaches Timothy

  337. to love

  338. this enemy

  339. or these enemies

  340. that are against him.

  341. Look at verse 6.

  342. Some have wandered away

  343. and have turned to me

  344. to this talk.

  345. Now watch this,

  346. verse 7.

  347. They want to be

  348. teachers of the law

  349. but they don't know

  350. what they're talking about

  351. or what they so confidently affirm.

  352. They want to be

  353. teachers of what?

  354. The law.

  355. Who's talking here?

  356. Paul.

  357. Does Paul know anything

  358. about being a teacher

  359. of the law?

  360. What had Paul become?

  361. I mean,

  362. back when he was Saul,

  363. before he was Paul,

  364. everything these guys

  365. ever dream of being,

  366. he's already been there,

  367. done that.

  368. Right?

  369. They're hoping,

  370. they're hoping to be

  371. teachers of the law

  372. and Paul says,

  373. I was a teacher of the law

  374. and I went as high

  375. as you could get.

  376. Now when he describes

  377. these guys,

  378. how does he describe them?

  379. They want to be

  380. teachers of the law

  381. but they don't know

  382. what they're talking about.

  383. Isn't that what he says?

  384. They're acting in ignorance.

  385. What was the attitude

  386. of Jesus

  387. towards the soldiers

  388. that beat him

  389. when he was on the cross?

  390. Father, forgive them.

  391. They don't know

  392. what they're doing.

  393. They're acting in ignorance.

  394. How does Paul

  395. describe himself

  396. at the time

  397. he was a teacher

  398. of the law?

  399. If we look down

  400. to verse 12,

  401. I thank Christ Jesus

  402. our Lord

  403. who has given me strength

  404. that he considered me faithful

  405. appointing me

  406. to his service

  407. even though

  408. I was

  409. once

  410. a blasphemer

  411. and a persecutor

  412. and a violent man.

  413. When was he

  414. those three things?

  415. When he was a

  416. teacher

  417. of the law.

  418. Right?

  419. So speaking of that time,

  420. he says,

  421. I was shown mercy

  422. because

  423. I

  424. acted

  425. how?

  426. In ignorance

  427. and unbelief.

  428. Paul says,

  429. Timothy,

  430. my son,

  431. do you love me?

  432. Yes, Paul.

  433. You're like a father

  434. to me.

  435. Okay,

  436. then listen,

  437. I'm telling you,

  438. you gotta put a stop

  439. to what they're doing.

  440. But not for your sake,

  441. Timothy,

  442. but for their sake.

  443. It's not so your ministry

  444. will be easier,

  445. so your church will flourish

  446. and ministries

  447. are gonna go without opposition,

  448. but for their sake,

  449. Timothy.

  450. Can you love those guys

  451. because they're doing wrong?

  452. Because they're doing wrong

  453. because they don't know

  454. any better.

  455. I didn't know better

  456. when I was doing

  457. exactly what they're doing.

  458. What did he do?

  459. He just took the face

  460. off of those unbelievers

  461. and put his own face

  462. in front of Timothy.

  463. You see that?

  464. He says,

  465. Timothy,

  466. do you understand?

  467. You love me.

  468. We're like this.

  469. Take that love

  470. and look at the other guys

  471. who were in the same position

  472. I was in

  473. when somebody loved me,

  474. when Jesus Christ loved me

  475. and brought his grace to me

  476. and when he changed me.

  477. Was Paul still

  478. what those guys are

  479. or had he changed?

  480. Oh, he changed.

  481. Now,

  482. Timothy liked Paul.

  483. You see why

  484. it takes a sincere faith

  485. and a pure heart

  486. and a clear conscience

  487. to look at those guys

  488. and instead of seeing them

  489. for who they are,

  490. see them for who they could be?

  491. Listen,

  492. that's how you love the lost.

  493. We get so wrapped up

  494. in what they're doing to us,

  495. we can't love them.

  496. But if we can let go of that

  497. and begin to see them

  498. for who God sees they could be,

  499. if we share the gospel with them

  500. and if God gets a hold

  501. of their life

  502. and if God can change them

  503. and if grace comes on them,

  504. what will they be?

  505. I was at Liberty University

  506. just a couple weeks ago

  507. for their missions conference

  508. and the president

  509. of Wycliffe Translators

  510. was there

  511. and he posed this question

  512. and it hit me like a rock

  513. when he posed the question

  514. and the more I've thought about it,

  515. the more I can't,

  516. I can't even imagine it.

  517. I go into countries

  518. where there is no gospel.

  519. You've got to understand that.

  520. They've never read the Bible.

  521. They don't know anything about God.

  522. I want you to imagine

  523. what your worldview of life,

  524. daily life,

  525. would be

  526. if you had no biblical principles,

  527. no understanding of God,

  528. no Bible verses,

  529. no godly person around you

  530. setting the example.

  531. You had no Bible influence

  532. on your worldview.

  533. What would you be thinking like?

  534. We need to see those people

  535. and put ourselves in that position

  536. before we give up the opportunity

  537. to love them

  538. because had it not been

  539. for God being merciful

  540. and bringing his message to us,

  541. who would we be?

  542. We'd be no different

  543. and the way you're going to learn

  544. to love the lost

  545. is to see ourselves

  546. and what we would have been

  547. and that's what,

  548. that's exactly what Paul is doing.

  549. He says,

  550. I was shown mercy

  551. because I acted in ignorance.

  552. In verse 14 now,

  553. 1 Timothy chapter 1,

    1 Timothy 1 chapter mention

  554. the grace of our Lord

  555. was poured out on me abundantly

  556. along with the faith

  557. and love that are in Christ Jesus.

  558. Remember, he's talking to Timothy.

  559. Now, I want you to think about this

  560. for a moment.

  561. Look back at verse 2.

  562. To Timothy, my true son in the faith,

  563. and then he gives his greeting.

  564. What's it say?

  565. Grace?

  566. What?

  567. What's next?

  568. Mercy and peace.

  569. If you were to go back to Romans

  570. and 1 Corinthians

  571. and 2 Corinthians

  572. and Galatians

  573. and Ephesians

  574. and Philippians

  575. and Colossians,

  576. every book,

  577. he has the same greeting.

  578. Grace and peace.

  579. Grace and peace.

  580. Grace and peace.

  581. Grace and peace.

  582. Grace and peace.

  583. Not gravy and peas.

  584. Grace and peace.

  585. Grace and peace.

  586. Until he gets to this

  587. pastoral epistle,

  588. which, by the way,

  589. I think is a wrong name for it.

  590. He's not,

  591. he has a pastor,

  592. so I'm okay with calling it

  593. a pastoral epistle,

  594. but he was a missionary

  595. trained by Paul,

  596. moved around

  597. from Corinth to Ephesus.

  598. He traveled with Paul,

  599. started a church

  600. in the home of Aquila Priscilla,

  601. which he's pastoring here

  602. in Ephesus

  603. when Paul writes him.

  604. So he's a missionary pastor.

  605. It's a missionary epistle

  606. if you ask me.

  607. And he gets to here

  608. and he says,

  609. I know what you're dealing with.

  610. I'm about to ask you

  611. to stay and deal with

  612. some people that are against you,

  613. so grace,

  614. mercy,

  615. and peace.

  616. It's the first time

  617. he brings up mercy

  618. in his greeting like that.

  619. I don't know if it's because

  620. in order to deal with this,

  621. Timothy,

  622. you're going to need

  623. the mercy of God,

  624. or if it's,

  625. you're going to need

  626. God's mercy to deal

  627. with those people,

  628. or if it's both.

  629. But God's mercy

  630. is a huge part of this,

  631. and he says,

  632. in verse 15 now,

  633. here is a trustworthy saying

  634. that deserves full acceptance.

  635. The Christ Jesus

  636. came into the world

  637. to save sinners,

  638. the lost,

  639. those people that realize

  640. they're lost

  641. and they're looking for a way

  642. like Cornelius

  643. or the Ethiopian eunuch

  644. who realized something was missing

  645. and they knew they were lost

  646. and can't somebody

  647. show me the way?

  648. To Saul,

  649. who was on the road

  650. to kill other Christians

  651. and didn't know

  652. he was lost

  653. and thought he was doing

  654. the right thing

  655. because out of unbelief

  656. he was ignorant of the truth.

  657. And if you'd have told Paul,

  658. Saul,

  659. on that way

  660. before the Lord

  661. showed up to him

  662. on Damascus,

  663. Saul,

  664. you are lost,

  665. brother.

  666. He would not have been humble

  667. and said,

  668. well then thank you

  669. for showing me the way.

  670. He just said,

  671. who are you

  672. to tell me

  673. I'm lost?

  674. Right?

  675. So from extreme

  676. to extreme

  677. God is ready

  678. to reach all of them

  679. and Paul recognizes it now

  680. and he says,

  681. look at this,

  682. I love this.

  683. He said,

  684. Jesus Christ came into the world

  685. to save sinners

  686. of whom

  687. I

  688. am

  689. the worst.

  690. Meaning

  691. to Timothy,

  692. stating very clearly

  693. to Timothy

  694. where on the scale

  695. of worst

  696. to easiest

  697. to deal with

  698. would his enemies be

  699. above or below Paul?

  700. Timothy,

  701. you're mad at those guys.

  702. Listen to me.

  703. You would not have liked me.

  704. You see what he's doing?

  705. He's putting himself

  706. in the position

  707. of the lost,

  708. making Timothy

  709. look at him.

  710. I want you to see

  711. when Paul does this

  712. and when we do this,

  713. when we humble ourselves

  714. enough to do

  715. what Paul is doing,

  716. it will drive us

  717. to love the lost

  718. because there's no mistaking

  719. in this passage

  720. Paul loves the lost.

  721. Right?

  722. But look what else it does

  723. when we're willing

  724. to humble ourselves

  725. this way.

  726. He says,

  727. verse 16,

  728. but for that very reason

  729. I was shown,

  730. there's our word again,

  731. mercy,

  732. so that in me

  733. the worst of sinners,

  734. Christ Jesus

  735. might display

  736. his unlimited patience

  737. as an example

  738. for those

  739. who would believe on him

  740. and receive eternal life.

  741. He's saying,

  742. look,

  743. I was the one

  744. called out in class

  745. where the teacher

  746. uses an example.

  747. Anybody like

  748. to be that student?

  749. I always found a way

  750. to be that student.

  751. I don't know why

  752. or what I did.

  753. I didn't like it.

  754. It's not enjoyable

  755. when we're called

  756. the example

  757. of wrongdoing.

  758. But instead of hiding

  759. from that,

  760. Paul doesn't say,

  761. yeah,

  762. and I'm glad

  763. he saved me,

  764. but man,

  765. those are really

  766. rough years for me.

  767. because Paul

  768. focused

  769. on his

  770. sinful past

  771. and then the mercy

  772. that came upon him

  773. and the forgiveness

  774. of sins

  775. that was given to him,

  776. look what happens

  777. to him.

  778. He says,

  779. I'm going to read

  780. the last half

  781. of that verse again.

  782. It says,

  783. to be an example

  784. for those who

  785. would believe on him

  786. and receive eternal life,

  787. now to the king,

  788. eternal,

  789. immortal,

  790. invisible,

  791. the only God,

  792. be honored and glory

  793. forever and ever.

  794. Amen.

  795. What happened?

  796. He's talking about

  797. how bad he was.

  798. And within two verses,

  799. he's,

  800. hey,

  801. God is awesome.

  802. He's dancing.

  803. He's amen and amen

  804. and amen and amen.

  805. I could just see

  806. Paul writing a letter,

  807. breaking his pencil.

  808. Oh,

  809. give me another one.

  810. But a minute ago,

  811. he's talking about

  812. how he was an example

  813. of sinfulness.

  814. But it caused him

  815. to think about

  816. the greatness of God.

  817. How often do you think

  818. about your past

  819. to remind you

  820. of what you were,

  821. not to be sorrowful in it,

  822. but to remember

  823. what God has done.

  824. It's awesome.

  825. Are you grateful

  826. that God forgave you?

  827. I mean,

  828. I am.

  829. I hate the thought

  830. of what I would be

  831. without the biblical worldview

  832. of Jesus Christ

  833. and what he's done for me.

  834. There are lost people

  835. around you

  836. that don't have that.

  837. It's not that they've

  838. just rejected.

  839. Some have.

  840. But they don't even know

  841. what's being offered.

  842. And don't assume

  843. that your neighbor knows

  844. just because they live

  845. in America

  846. or just because

  847. they live next to you.

  848. Or like Waleed said,

  849. with the church

  850. that was right down

  851. the street from his house,

  852. never shared the gospel

  853. with him until he walked in.

  854. They just assumed

  855. people around would know.

  856. Well,

  857. mm-mm.

  858. So when you see

  859. that enemy

  860. and the harder

  861. they are to deal with,

  862. the more you need

  863. to look at yourself.

  864. Because the minute

  865. you realize

  866. I was bad

  867. and God saved me

  868. and there's people

  869. like Paul

  870. that are worse

  871. than me.

  872. Paul admitted

  873. he was a worse sinner.

  874. And yet God reached them.

  875. I'm going to worship God

  876. because I can see

  877. ahead of time

  878. what God's going to do

  879. in the lives

  880. of those people.

  881. That's faith.

  882. It'd be a real hard job

  883. to be a missionary

  884. to people you absolutely knew

  885. are never going to receive

  886. Jesus Christ.

  887. We do it in the hope

  888. that they're going to

  889. because God's big enough

  890. to reach them.

  891. Not because we're smart enough

  892. to convince them

  893. but because God

  894. is big enough

  895. to reach them.

  896. Does this make sense to you?

  897. We learn to love them

  898. because Paul

  899. said,

  900. of the worst of them

  901. that was me.

  902. Timothy

  903. if you're going to

  904. hate those guys

  905. hate me first

  906. because I was worse

  907. and the only difference

  908. between me and them

  909. is God's grace

  910. which you had nothing

  911. to do with.

  912. Will you change

  913. your attitude

  914. towards the lost?

  915. Instead of seeing them

  916. as in the way

  917. of the church

  918. and in the way

  919. of things

  920. and the way

  921. of ministry

  922. and the problems

  923. they cause you

  924. believe me

  925. these guys

  926. were causing

  927. real problems

  928. for Timothy

  929. in his church.

  930. The problems

  931. are not going

  932. to go away.

  933. Will you get

  934. on your knees

  935. and say,

  936. oh God

  937. change my attitude

  938. towards them

  939. let me see

  940. myself

  941. in their shoes.

  942. Let me see

  943. what I would have been

  944. had I

  945. not had the knowledge

  946. of scripture

  947. that they're missing.

  948. When Jesus said

  949. to the soldiers

  950. father forgive them

  951. they don't know

  952. what they're doing

  953. one could argue

  954. yes they did

  955. they tightened up

  956. their fist

  957. they pulled it back

  958. and as they swung

  959. it across his jaw

  960. did they not expect

  961. it to hurt?

  962. They knew

  963. what they were doing

  964. but did they really

  965. know

  966. the audacity

  967. that they had

  968. to be smiting

  969. the son of God?

  970. did they know

  971. that?

  972. They didn't

  973. and Jesus

  974. in his infinite

  975. knowledge

  976. said

  977. oh I feel

  978. sorry for them

  979. because they don't

  980. realize what they're

  981. doing

  982. and he loved

  983. them

  984. while they

  985. beat him

  986. who are we

  987. to lose love

  988. for some

  989. lost person

  990. because they make

  991. life uncomfortable

  992. for us

  993. will you

  994. love

  995. the lost?

  996. Let's pray

  997. dear heavenly father

  998. I want to thank you

  999. for the love

  1000. that Paul

  1001. displayed

  1002. in this chapter

  1003. the need

  1004. to love

  1005. the lost

  1006. we don't

  1007. love them

  1008. by

  1009. tolerating

  1010. and allowing

  1011. it to go by

  1012. and not

  1013. standing firm

  1014. on the truth

  1015. there is

  1016. only

  1017. one

  1018. way

  1019. to

  1020. salvation

  1021. through

  1022. Jesus

  1023. Christ

  1024. Jesus

  1025. said

  1026. I am

  1027. the way

  1028. the truth

  1029. and the life

  1030. no one

  1031. comes to the

  1032. father

  1033. but by me

  1034. so Lord

  1035. help us

  1036. to stand

  1037. in the truth

  1038. but to love

  1039. the sinner

  1040. enough

  1041. to tell

  1042. them

  1043. the gospel

  1044. message

  1045. while heads

  1046. are bowed

  1047. and eyes

  1048. are closed

  1049. I want to

  1050. talk to you

  1051. believers

  1052. for a moment

  1053. I believe

  1054. we have

  1055. believers

  1056. here

  1057. of all

  1058. levels

  1059. of maturity

  1060. but I think

  1061. every one

  1062. of us

  1063. every one

  1064. of us

  1065. including

  1066. myself

  1067. struggles

  1068. with the

  1069. love

  1070. for the

  1071. unbelievers

  1072. that cause

  1073. us

  1074. problems

  1075. I first

  1076. want you

  1077. to

  1078. talk

  1079. to the

  1080. Lord

  1081. and ask

  1082. him

  1083. for

  1084. forgiveness

  1085. of that

  1086. sin

  1087. I believe

  1088. it's a

  1089. sin

  1090. to hate

  1091. the lost

  1092. ask

  1093. him

  1094. for

  1095. forgiveness

  1096. for that

  1097. and ask

  1098. him

  1099. to give

  1100. you

  1101. his

  1102. heart

  1103. of love

  1104. and patience

  1105. and understanding

  1106. towards the

  1107. unbeliever

  1108. even when

  1109. they are

  1110. mistreating

  1111. you

  1112. unjustly

  1113. and if

  1114. the Lord

  1115. lays on

  1116. your heart

  1117. a specific

  1118. name

  1119. and you

  1120. can ask

  1121. him to

  1122. do that

  1123. Lord lay

  1124. on my

  1125. heart

  1126. a specific

  1127. name

  1128. if he

  1129. puts

  1130. on your

  1131. heart

  1132. or in

  1133. your

  1134. mind

  1135. a specific

  1136. name

  1137. in a

  1138. moment

  1139. during

  1140. the invitation

  1141. I'm

  1142. going to

  1143. ask

  1144. you

  1145. to

  1146. step

  1147. forward

  1148. and by

  1149. coming

  1150. forward

  1151. and you

  1152. can pray

  1153. with somebody

  1154. if you

  1155. want

  1156. or you

  1157. can just

  1158. stand here

  1159. and pray

  1160. to the

  1161. Lord

  1162. you can

  1163. kneel

  1164. at the

  1165. stairs

  1166. turn around

  1167. kneel

  1168. at the

  1169. front row

  1170. sit on

  1171. the front

  1172. row

  1173. I don't

  1174. care

  1175. have a

  1176. time of

  1177. prayer

  1178. with the

  1179. Lord

  1180. and then

  1181. go back

  1182. to your

  1183. seat

  1184. but by

  1185. doing so

  1186. you are

  1187. committing

  1188. to the

  1189. Lord

  1190. that I

  1191. will pray

  1192. !

  1193. for that

  1194. person

  1195. and I

  1196. will seek

  1197. an opportunity

  1198. to share

  1199. the gospel

  1200. with that

  1201. person

  1202. within the

  1203. next two

  1204. weeks

  1205. to a

  1206. month

  1207. I will

  1208. pray about

  1209. it

  1210. and then

  1211. I'm going to

1212. go and I'm going to

  1213. talk to them

  1214. I'm committing

  1215. myself to do

  1216. that

  1217. by coming

  1218. forward and

  1219. praying and going

  1220. back you are

  1221. committing to the

  1222. Lord that you are

  1223. going to actively do

  1224. something about that

  1225. lost soul

  1226. maybe this week

  1227. has stirred

  1228. someone else

  1229. to say

  1230. you know what

  1231. I want to

  1232. give my life

  1233. to be a

  1234. missionary

  1235. if God

  1236. wants me

  1237. and I'm going

  1238. to head in that

  1239. direction until

  1240. God closes

  1241. the door

  1242. that challenge

  1243. was given to me

  1244. at 11 years old

  1245. and I took it

  1246. and I followed

  1247. that and I pursued

  1248. missions until

  1249. God shut the

  1250. door for a

  1251. certain time

  1252. and then eventually

  1253. he opened it

  1254. and now we're

  1255. again right where

  1256. he wants us to

  1257. be

  1258. that was done

  1259. at 11 years old

  1260. I didn't know

  1261. for sure I would

  1262. be a missionary

  1263. but I told the

  1264. Lord if you want

  1265. me to be

  1266. I'm willing to

  1267. go

  1268. that could be

  1269. a teenager

  1270. youth

  1271. it could be

  1272. an adult

  1273. it could be

  1274. somebody already

  1275. in a career

  1276. who says

  1277. okay Lord

  1278. I'm willing

  1279. to start

  1280. looking at it

  1281. and I'll

  1282. head that way

  1283. until you

  1284. shut the

  1285. door

  1286. if that's a

  1287. decision

  1288. you're willing

  1289. to make

  1290. this morning

  1291. I'm going

  1292. to ask you

  1293. to come

  1294. forward

  1295. and tell

  1296. Pastor

  1297. Kenoyer

  1298. that this

  1299. is a

  1300. decision

  1301. that you

  1302. want to

  1303. make

  1304. I got

  1305. one more

  1306. I want to

  1307. talk to the

  1308. lost

  1309. now

  1310. and I say

  1311. that term

  1312. very endearingly

  1313. not judgmentally

  1314. do you need

  1315. Jesus Christ

  1316. he is a

  1317. holy

  1318. perfect God

  1319. that hates

  1320. sin

  1321. and yet

  1322. he's commanded

  1323. us to love

  1324. you

  1325. because he

  1326. loves you

  1327. he sees

  1328. that what

  1329. you need

  1330. was the

  1331. knowledge

  1332. and belief

  1333. you needed

  1334. the knowledge

  1335. that Jesus

  1336. Christ

  1337. died on the

  1338. cross

  1339. paid

  1340. for your

  1341. sin

  1342. rose

  1343. from the

  1344. dead

  1345. out of

  1346. love

  1347. for you

  1348. and offers

  1349. the free

  1350. gift

  1351. of salvation

  1352. and he

  1353. just wants

  1354. you to hear

  1355. that and

  1356. believe it

  1357. will you

  1358. accept that

  1359. message today

  1360. it's a

  1361. simple thing

  1362. and if that's

  1363. a decision

  1364. you're willing

  1365. to make

  1366. today

  1367. I want

  1368. you to

  1369. come

  1370. forward

  1371. and speak

  1372. to me

  1373. or Pastor

  1374. Kenoyer

  1375. and say

  1376. I want

  1377. to make

  1378. that

  1379. decision

  1380. and we'll

  1381. put you

  1382. with somebody

  1383. who will

  1384. open up

  1385. the scriptures

  1386. and answer

  1387. any question

  1388. that you

  1389. have

  1390. so you

  1391. can

  1392. with 100%

  1393. clarity

  1394. make the

  1395. decision

  1396. to accept

  1397. Jesus Christ

  1398. as your

  1399. personal

  1400. savior

  1401. and not

  1402. be lost

  1403. any longer

  1404. but to be

  1405. found

  1406. and to be

  1407. with us

  1408. who rejoice

  1409. that we

  1410. understand we

  1411. used to be

  1412. lost but now

  1413. we found the

  1414. way through

  1415. Jesus Christ

  1416. as we stand

  1417. together

  1418. in just a

  1419. moment

  1420. I'm going to

  1421. pray and

  1422. then we're

  1423. going to

  1424. sing together

  1425. during the

  1426. song

  1427. we're going

  1428. to have an

  1429. opportunity

  1430. for you to

  1431. come forward

  1432. let's pray

  1433. dear heavenly

  1434. father

  1435. I pray

  1436. that you

  1437. would help

  1438. us to

  1439. make

  1440. decisions

  1441. now

  1442. before

  1443. you

  1444. commitments

  1445. not just

  1446. to hear it

  1447. let it go

  1448. in one ear

  1449. and out

  1450. another

  1451. not to

  1452. feel like

  1453. we've been

  1454. challenged

  1455. but to

  1456. make a

  1457. decision

  1458. to do

  1459. something

  1460. about it

  1461. in this

  1462. I pray

  1463. in Jesus

  1464. name

  1465. amen

  1466. stand

  1467. together

  1468. God's

  1469. put a

  1470. matter

  1471. on your

  1472. heart

  1473. that you

  1474. need to

  1475. care for

  1476. publicly

  1477. you

  1478. or a

  1479. brother

  1480. give

  1481. very

  1482. pointed

  1483. challenge

  1484. and as

  1485. we are

  1486. singing

  1487. if God

  1488. lays that

  1489. matter

  1490. on your

  1491. heart

  1492. you

  1493. come

  1494. forward

  1495. and

  1496. settle

  1497. that

  1498. with

  1499. him
