  1. Now, I want you to take your Bibles and turn in them to Ephesians 5, verse 18.

    Ephesians 5:18

  2. One of the clear advantages of expositional preaching, and how many of you know what I mean by expositional preaching?

  3. Wave at me or smile so I can see front and lower teeth.

  4. Okay.

  5. Okay, there are enough of you that, yeah.

  6. Now, probably I'll explain just for a moment.

  7. One of the clear advantages of expositional preaching is that the preacher is committed by the work of exposition,

  8. or explaining the Word of God, and in doing so in the order in which God has given us His Word,

  9. that the preacher is limited from avoiding hard things or from choosing those things that would be His preference.

  10. What it means is that God, who has revealed His Word, expects that it be explained to His people for their blessing,

  11. for their good.

  12. And expositional preaching means that the preacher is responsible to begin where God begins and to work through the text in such a fashion that people at the end of a sermon,

  13. or at the end of a series, or at the end of a man's ministry can say,

  14. He explained the Word of God.

  15. One of the things that I have been a little struck by lately is the number of times I've had people who have visited our fellowship and have made comment to me,

  16. your preaching is different.

  17. And I would expect that because God uses all kinds of people in the pulpit,

  18. that there are certain aspects to which there's a lot of different preaching out there.

  19. In that preaching involves the person and the text.

  20. But the thing that I found most striking, as I've heard people comment on the difference of preaching here,

  21. whether it's Pastor Saul or me or whoever stands in the pulpit,

  22. is that the central theme or the activity in which preaching really is engaged in is dealing with the text.

  23. And it's the thing.

  24. I mean, the Bible is not the launching point for me to kind of go off on some kind of little storyline,

  25. but at the end of the day, you should walk away saying,

  26. Yeah, we covered these verses, and here's what that means.

  27. Now, listen to me.

  28. Preaching really is a Spirit-enabled

  29. heralding of what God thinks.

  30. You got that?

  31. It's what God has to say.

  32. And one of the difficulties, honestly, of preaching

  33. is that it comes wrapped in skin.

  34. And there are many days when I go home

  35. and I wish that there'd been less skin and more text.

  36. I work at that.

  37. And I'm very thankful for your prayers regarding that.

  38. Because when it's all said and done,

  39. the one thing that I want you to remember is,

  40. this is what God says.

  41. Now,

  42. I bring that up because

  43. if I were not committed to exposition of the Scriptures,

  44. the first half of this

  45. verse,

  46. where I'd skip,

  47. I'd just gloss over it.

  48. But I am committed to being faithful to the text.

  49. And I'll say that again.

  50. I am committed to be faithful to the text.

  51. And I've got to tell you,

  52. honestly, as I was praying,

  53. and I've been praying about this passage

  54. for weeks.

  55. I study in advance,

  56. and I knew we were coming to this,

  57. and I remember thinking to myself,

  58. there's a high probability

  59. that I'm going to make most of you in here irritated.

  60. I mean,

  61. there are some days that I know I managed to irritate some of you,

  62. but I don't often think

  63. that I'm going to irritate most of you.

  64. And this is probably one of those days

  65. where when it's all said and done,

  66. there are going to be some of you

  67. who wish I'd said something else,

  68. and others of you wish that I hadn't said what I did.

  69. And so it's like,

  70. it's all right.

  71. I mean that.

  72. I am, who knows,

  73. 20 years from checkout,

  74. and when that happens,

  75. I want to hear Jesus say,

  76. good job.

  77. So let's look at the passage.

  78. Ephesians chapter 5, verse 18,

    Ephesians 5:18

  79. it says,

  80. and do not get drunk with wine.

  81. I am going to preach this morning on drinking.

  82. So the first point is this,

  83. the Bible on drunkenness,

  84. because that's what the text says.

  85. Do you see it?

  86. Right there it is.

  87. Ephesians 5, 18a,

  88. that's the way it's actually in my computer

  89. so I can find it again.

  90. Ephesians 5, 18a,

  91. that means the first half of the verse,

  92. do not get drunk with wine.

  93. I do think it's appropriate for us to remember

  94. that when we deal with the Scriptures,

  95. we always are instructed to handle the context.

  96. And so I want to say up front

  97. that this passage is not primarily a proof text

  98. for the abstinence of alcoholic consumption.

  99. It is actually in the larger frame of things

  100. a command to live a Spirit-filled Christian life.

  101. And I got to tell you,

  102. living a Spirit-filled Christian life

  103. is supremely important.

  104. It is far more important

  105. than I think many people

  106. who profess to know Christ today

  107. really understand.

  108. And so after having called believers

  109. to live their lives for the glory of Christ

  110. and for the sake of others,

  111. Paul now comes to a fundamental

  112. and blessed truth of Christian living.

  113. We are to live out our faith

  114. through the power of the Spirit of God

  115. who indwells us.

  116. In fact, a central tenet or principle

  117. of our salvation

  118. is that we're not in our salvation

  119. just given another set of rules

  120. to work off of.

  121. We are brought into personal relationship

  122. with the Lord of glory

  123. and with the Lord Jesus Christ in particular.

  124. And we who have salvation

  125. have the indwelling Spirit.

  126. I got to tell you,

  127. that is a whole lot better

  128. than you may think.

  129. It's fantastic.

  130. Salvation makes us new.

  131. And it places us in a divine relationship

  132. with the triune God.

  133. And Christian living,

  134. and I want you to think about this with me,

  135. Christian living,

  136. is for the glory of God

  137. in union with Christ

  138. through the enabling of the Spirit.

  139. For the glory of God

  140. in union with Christ

  141. through the enabling of the Spirit.

  142. I want you to stop just for a moment

  143. and recognize that,

  144. listen, the Bible is very, very clear on this,

  145. that salvation is something

  146. that doesn't happen

  147. in the power of the flesh.

  148. What I mean by that

  149. is that if you are sitting here this morning

  150. and you know the Lord Jesus Christ

  151. is your personal Savior,

  152. it's not like it all happened

  153. just because you figured it out.

  154. Now, it is true that your mind

  155. and your heart were engaged in that,

  156. but the Scriptures tell us

  157. that prior to our conversion,

  158. we were dead in trespasses and sin.

  159. And how do the dead come to life?

  160. Does anybody know?

  161. Dead people come to life

  162. only by the power of the Spirit of God.

  163. I love,

  164. I love Ezekiel

  165. and the vision in the valley of dry bones.

  166. There's a song that goes with that,

  167. you know,

  168. and I'm not going to sing it this morning,

  169. but, you know,

  170. dim bones, dim bones,

  171. gonna,

  172. it's got a rock to it,

  173. so I like that.

  174. You know,

  175. and here,

  176. anyway,

  177. let's get back to the text,

  178. you know,

  179. stay with the Bible,

  180. not the other,

  181. here,

  182. God asked the prophet a question,

  183. he says,

  184. can these bones live again?

  185. What was Ezekiel's answer?

  186. If you do the King James,

  187. it's thou knowest,

  188. O Lord.

  189. He's saying,

  190. here's what he's saying,

  191. it's up to you,

  192. right?

  193. Salvation is of the Lord.

  194. One of the things that we're going to learn

  195. as we work our way through the passage

  196. is that it's not just salvation that's of the Lord,

  197. it's also Christian living.

  198. It's also Christian living.

  199. You know,

  200. as I get older,

  201. and that's happening,

  202. as I get older,

  203. I am reminded more and more often

  204. of just how absolutely dependent I am

  205. upon the Spirit.

  206. And when I don't rely on the Spirit,

  207. it's not real pretty.

  208. And what Paul is going to do

  209. later in the passage

  210. is he's going to encourage us,

  211. and we're going to deal with that

  212. next time,

  213. he says,

  214. but be filled with the Spirit.

  215. So,

  216. what we're looking at here

  217. in the first part of this verse

  218. is a comparison

  219. to help us understand something.

  220. don't be drunk with wine,

  221. but be filled with the Spirit.

  222. However,

  223. I want to make this clear.

  224. God does not intend

  225. this little statement,

  226. don't be drunk with wine,

  227. to be taken merely

  228. or exclusively

  229. for the sake of comparison.

  230. It is instruction as well.

  231. Spoken to those who are believers.

  232. In the church in Ephesus,

  233. and by extension,

  234. the Spirit of God

  235. intends for this passage

  236. to inform the lives

  237. of believers today,

  238. here,

  239. now.

  240. And the reason I say that

  241. is because

  242. Paul chooses

  243. to use

  244. the imperative

  245. when he says,

  246. do not be drunk with wine.

  247. I do want you to understand

  248. that evidently,

  249. drunkenness

  250. was a problem

  251. not only in the city of Ephesus,

  252. but it was a challenge

  253. in the early church.

  254. There are many illustrations of that,

  255. and I will not go into all of them,

  256. but just a reminder,

  257. the fact that he says it

  258. implies that it was something

  259. that needed to be said.

  260. The truth of the matter is

  261. is that drunkenness

  262. has been a problem

  263. since the fall,

  264. and it has contributed

  265. incredible heartache

  266. and suffering

  267. on mankind.

  268. I am far too well acquainted

  269. with the effect

  270. of drunkenness

  271. on people,

  272. and over the years

  273. of life,

  274. I have seen

  275. what alcohol does

  276. to families

  277. and to individuals,

  278. and its absolute,

  279. horrible impact

  280. on people's

  281. well-being.

  282. The Bible

  283. always speaks

  284. of drunkenness

  285. as something

  286. that's negative.

  287. I'm not going to list

  288. all the texts

  289. for you this morning

  290. because we have one

  291. right here

  292. in verse 18

  293. where it says,

  294. do not be drunk with,

  295. it's an imperative,

  296. it's a command,

  297. this is not what

  298. the believer

  299. is to be doing.

  300. Now, in case you're

  301. wondering,

  302. alcohol is a depressant.

  303. How many of you

  304. realize that?

  305. Alcohol is a depressant,

  306. and what it depresses

  307. from the very moment

  308. that it is taken in,

  309. it depresses

  310. a man's ability

  311. to reason

  312. and to react.

  313. In our culture,

  314. that really is not

  315. thinking biblically

  316. at the moment,

  317. and I don't mean that

  318. in a negative way,

  319. but I'm just saying

  320. our culture has

  321. all kinds of limitations

  322. on the consumption

  323. of alcohol.

  324. Do you understand that?

  325. I mean,

  326. there are laws

  327. against it

  328. for those who are

  329. under 21.

  330. Should a believer

  331. drink at all

  332. if they're under 21,

  333. and what's the answer?

  334. Now, listen to me,

  335. because some of you

  336. are out here thinking,

  337. yeah, right.

  338. Romans 13 says

  339. that we are to obey

  340. those who God

  341. has put in authority

  342. over us.

  343. So, he's the one

  344. who has ordained

  345. civil law.

  346. And so,

  347. understand this,

  348. the issue of drunkenness,

  349. from the very moment

  350. you take in alcohol,

  351. it begins to depress

  352. your ability

  353. to think

  354. and react appropriately.

  355. In fact,

  356. as you look at the passage

  357. in verse 18,

  358. it says,

  359. do not get drunk

  360. with wine,

  361. for that is

  362. debauchery

  363. or dissipation

  364. or excess,

  365. depending on

  366. your translation.

  367. the idea

  368. in the Greek

  369. is not simply

  370. that drunkenness

  371. is going to end up

  372. in excessive behavior,

  373. but it's really

  374. talking about the fact

  375. that in broad terms,

  376. alcohol,

  377. what it does

  378. is it dulls

  379. or desensitizes

  380. your ability

  381. to think properly

  382. and clearly,

  383. and the judgments

  384. that follow

  385. are proportionate.

  386. one of the things

  387. I was thinking about

  388. this week

  389. is that I anticipate

  390. in a couple weeks

  391. or so,

  392. well,

  393. this is November 17th,

  394. so there's a while

  395. to go,

  396. but about a week

  397. or so before

  398. Christmas

  399. and then right around

  400. New Year's Day,

  401. there will be

  402. a flurry of articles

  403. in the papers

  404. and on the web

  405. about drunken behavior

  406. at parties.

  407. Do you know

  408. why they send those out?

  409. Does anybody know?

  410. it's because

  411. so many people

  412. do incredibly stupid things

  413. at company parties

  414. and some people actually,

  415. well,

  416. suffice it to say,

  417. there are little warnings

  418. that you could lose your job

  419. if you act like

  420. an absolute ignoramus.

  421. You know,

  422. alcohol,

  423. remember what it is?

  424. It's a depressant.

  425. It depresses your ability

  426. to think clearly

  427. and so the attitude

  428. you've had towards

  429. your boss

  430. all along.

  431. The Christmas party,

  432. three sheets to the wind

  433. and it's time for you

  434. to tell the truth.

  435. Okay?

  436. The Bible condemns

  437. drunkenness.

  438. The Bible clearly

  439. prohibits it.

  440. And you look at a number

  441. of different passages

  442. in relationship to it

  443. and recognize

  444. the Bible has no support

  445. at all

  446. for a believer

  447. ever being drunk.

  448. By the way,

  449. question,

  450. just so that you are

  451. aware of this.

  452. I did some research

  453. just to kind of check

  454. and I think,

  455. Greg,

  456. you can help me with this,

  457. Officer Bernard.

  458. I think you have to blow

  459. .08 alcohol

  460. to be drunk.

  461. Is that the case?

  462. Okay.

  463. That's when you're

  464. over the line.

  465. I don't know

  466. by personal experience,

  467. but I understand

  468. that it depends

  469. on body weight

  470. and anywhere

  471. between two

  472. and three beers

  473. or two

  474. or three little shots

  475. and you're over the line.

  476. And when you're

  477. over the line

  478. and you're caught

  479. driving in that state,

  480. that state referring,

  481. not the state of Ohio,

  482. but in that condition,

  483. guess what the consequences are?

  484. I don't want to ask you

  485. to tell me from experience,

  486. but I can tell you this,

  487. that it doesn't go well

  488. with you.

  489. Our culture

  490. is concerned.

  491. But let's come

  492. to a second question.

  493. The Bible's

  494. against drunkenness.

  495. Let's talk about

  496. the Bible on drinking.

  497. Let me start

  498. with a statement

  499. and then support it

  500. with the Scripture.

  501. The Bible does not

  502. condemn all drinking.

  503. The Bible does not

  504. condemn all drinking.

  505. And I have no doubt

  506. that hearing me say that

  507. may irritate some of you

  508. and cause others of you

  509. to say,

  510. see, I told you so.

  511. You know,

  512. Moody Bible Institute

  513. this year

  514. decided that it would

  515. take a different stance

  516. than it had historically

  517. on the matter of

  518. the drinking of

  519. its staff members

  520. and those who were

  521. above the age,

  522. et cetera.

  523. And it caused

  524. quite a flurry.

  525. And I seldom

  526. make comments

  527. on Facebook

  528. and I didn't make

  529. any comments

  530. in this case.

  531. I'm not here

  532. this morning

  533. to talk about

  534. Moody Bible Institute.

  535. I do want you

  536. to understand

  537. that their premise

  538. that it is not

  539. something that's

  540. prohibited in the Bible

  541. is accurate.

  542. There's undeniable

  543. proof

  544. that believers

  545. drank alcohol

  546. in the Old Testament

  547. and the New Testament

  548. and I cannot

  549. support the

  550. principle of

  551. complete abstinence

  552. from the text

  553. itself.

  554. There was wine

  555. that was drunk

  556. and I want you

  557. to understand

  558. that I have

  559. heard the arguments

  560. that the wine

  561. that was drunk

  562. was so watered

  563. down that it

  564. really would take

  565. you drinking

  566. several gallons

  567. for you to become

  568. inebriated.

  569. I don't buy

  570. that argument

  571. and I'll tell

  572. you why.

  573. When Noah

  574. got drunk

  575. in Genesis

    Genesis 9:21

  576. chapter 9

  577. verse 21

  578. it uses

  579. the Hebrew

  580. word

  581. yayin

  582. and it's

  583. the same

  584. word that

  585. is used

  586. over

  587. in Leviticus

    Leviticus 10:9

  588. chapter 10

  589. verse 9.

  590. I want you

  591. to look at

  592. this one.

  593. You're in

  594. Ephesians

  595. but turn back

  596. to Leviticus

    Leviticus 10:9

  597. chapter 10

  598. verse 9.

  599. I think

  600. the

  601. by the way

  602. you go

  603. G-E-L-N-D

  604. how many

  605. of you

  606. heard me?

  607. G-E-L-N-D

  608. Genesis

  609. Exodus

  610. Leviticus

  611. Numbers

  612. Deuteronomy.

  613. Okay I just

  614. wanted to coach

  615. you there a

  616. little bit

  617. and I got

  618. mixed up.

  619. Anyway

  620. Leviticus

    Leviticus 9 chapter mention

  621. chapter 9

  622. this is God

  623. giving

  624. imperatives

  625. or commands

  626. explicitly

  627. to the

  628. priests.

  629. 10

  630. verse 9

  631. drink no

  632. wine or

  633. strong drink

  634. you or

  635. your sons

  636. with you.

  637. What's the

  638. next word?

  639. Put your

  640. finger on it.

  641. Put your

  642. finger on it.

  643. Drink no

  644. wine or

  645. strong drink

  646. you or

  647. your sons

  648. with you.

  649. What's the

  650. next word?

  651. What is it?

  652. When

  653. you go

  654. into the

  655. tent of

  656. meeting

  657. lest you

  658. die.

  659. It shall

  660. be a

  661. statute

  662. forever

  663. throughout

  664. your

  665. generation.

  666. Let me

  667. give you

  668. a comparison

  669. so you

  670. understand

  671. this.

  672. I read

  673. this week

  674. that

  675. FBI

  676. agents are

  677. not allowed

  678. to take

  679. a single

  680. drink

  681. 10 hours

  682. before they

  683. go on

  684. duty.

  685. Do you

  686. have an

  687. idea why

  688. they would

  689. say something

  690. like that?

  691. I would

  692. imagine it

  693. has something

  694. to do with

  695. blood chemistry

  696. and the

  697. fact that

  698. your blood

  699. purges itself

  700. or your

  701. body kind

  702. of purges

  703. out the

  704. alcoholic

  705. effect over

  706. a certain

  707. amount of

  708. time.

  709. So anyway,

  710. any of you

  711. here that

  712. are FBI

  713. agents,

  714. you're 10

  715. hours before

  716. you can

  717. step onto

  718. the clock.

  719. Abstinence.

  720. The priest,

  721. when he was

  722. going in to

  723. do his

  724. priestly duty,

  725. the imperative,

  726. the command

  727. of God was

  728. don't you be

  729. touching that

  730. stuff at

  731. all when

  732. you go on

  733. duty.

  734. Do you

  735. follow that?

  736. Does that

  737. make sense?

  738. Nod your

  739. head if you

  740. can see it

  741. in the

  742. Bible.

  743. I'm not

  744. asking you

  745. if you

  746. agree,

  747. I'm just

  748. asking you

  749. can you

  750. see it

  751. in the

  752. Bible?

  753. Okay.

  754. Well,

  755. it was the

  756. same word,

  757. it is the

  758. same word

  759. that is used

  760. to refer to

  761. the Nazarite

  762. vows.

  763. How many

  764. of you

  765. here are

  766. familiar with

  767. the vows

  768. that Nazarites

  769. took?

  770. Nazarite

  771. vow,

  772. among those

  773. different

  774. particulars,

  775. was that

  776. you didn't

  777. touch

  778. wine,

  779. or anything

  780. that was

  781. made from

  782. grapes,

  783. including

  784. raisins.

  785. Can you

  786. imagine oatmeal

  787. without raisins?

  788. If you're a

  789. Nazarite,

  790. no raisins.

  791. Okay,

  792. now,

  793. turn in your

  794. Bible,

  795. you don't need

  796. to go to

  797. Numbers

  798. passage,

  799. but I want

  800. you to go

  801. to the

  802. Amos

  803. text,

  804. Amos

    Amos 2 chapter mention

  805. chapter 2.

  806. Amos,

  807. Obadiah,

  808. you know

  809. how it

  810. goes,

  811. right?

  812. It's nice

  813. to have

  814. Joel and

  815. Andrea here,

  816. and Joel

  817. comes right

  818. before Amos.

  819. Amos

    Amos 2:12

  820. chapter 2,

  821. verse 12.

  822. Here is what

  823. was going on

  824. in the nation

  825. of Israel.

  826. Listen,

  827. this is

  828. interesting.

  829. The Israelites

  830. didn't like

  831. the fact

  832. that the

  833. Nazarites

  834. were keeping

  835. to their

  836. vows and

  837. were abstaining

  838. from wine,

  839. and so the

  840. Israelites,

  841. any time a

  842. Nazarite would

  843. come walking

  844. around and

  845. say,

  846. hey,

  847. we want

  848. you to

  849. drink.

  850. No,

  851. no,

  852. I'm a

  853. Nazarite.

  854. Big deal.

  855. And they

  856. would force

  857. the Nazarites

  858. to drink.

  859. What would

  860. they ask

  861. the Nazarites

  862. to drink?

  863. Guess

  864. what?

  865. Wine.

  866. Verse 12,

  867. But you

  868. made the

  869. Nazarites

  870. drink wine

  871. and commanded

  872. the prophets

  873. saying,

  874. you shall not

  875. prophesy.

  876. The Nazarites

  877. were being

  878. forced to

  879. violate their

  880. oath of

  881. abstinence.

  882. Now,

  883. look at another

  884. passage in Amos.

  885. Amos chapter 9,

    Amos 9:14

  886. verse 14.

  887. And what

  888. chapter 9 is

  889. really talking

  890. about,

  891. first is the

  892. destruction of

  893. the nation of

  894. Israel,

  895. and then it's

  896. talking about

  897. the restoration

  898. that is going

  899. to come.

  900. God is going

  901. to bless

  902. these people

  903. after he

  904. gives them

  905. a very firm

  906. hand in

  907. discipline.

  908. And there in

  909. verse 14 it

  910. says,

  911. I will restore

  912. the fortunes

  913. of my people

  914. Israel,

  915. and they shall

  916. rebuild the

  917. ruined cities

  918. and inhabit

  919. them.

  920. They shall

  921. plant vineyards

  922. and drink

  923. their wine.

  924. Same word

  925. that we found

  926. previously in

  927. reference to

  928. Nazarites being

  929. forced to

  930. drink.

  931. It is evident

  932. that John the

  933. Baptist in the

  934. New Testament

  935. took a

  936. Nazarite vow,

  937. and the reason

  938. we know that,

  939. if you are there

  940. in Amos,

  941. you go forward

  942. to the book

  943. of Luke,

  944. and in Luke

    Luke 1 chapter mention

  945. chapter 1,

  946. we read a very

  947. interesting statement.

  948. Luke chapter

    Luke 1:15

  949. 1,

  950. verse 15,

  951. it says,

  952. For he will be

  953. great before the

  954. Lord,

  955. and he must not

  956. drink wine or

  957. strong drink,

  958. and he will be

  959. filled with the

  960. Spirit even from

  961. his mother's

  962. womb.

  963. Talk about

  964. Jesus.

  965. I'm talking about

  966. John the

  967. Baptist.

  968. On the other

  969. side of it,

  970. we understand that

  971. when Jesus came

  972. to the wedding

  973. feast at Cana,

  974. do you know

  975. what he did?

  976. He turned

  977. ordinary

  978. agua purificada

  979. into

  980. oinos.

  981. Let me do that

  982. in English.

  983. He turned

  984. water into

  985. wine.

  986. Okay?

  987. It is clear

  988. that if a

  989. Nazarite vow

  990. was to complete

  991. abstinence,

  992. that the same

  993. stipulation,

  994. I want you to

  995. understand this

  996. and follow and

  997. track with me,

  998. it would have

  999. been very easy

  1000. for the Holy

  1001. Spirit to be

  1002. just as clear

  1003. saying,

  1004. y'all,

  1005. you all,

  1006. all of you,

  1007. if you are a

  1008. believer,

  1009. are not to

  1010. drink wine,

  1011. period,

  1012. just like a

  1013. Nazarite.

  1014. My point is,

  1015. God could have

  1016. made it undeniably

  1017. clear regarding

  1018. this subject.

  1019. Okay?

  1020. So now,

  1021. let's come to

  1022. the last point.

  1023. Let's do a

  1024. little bit of

  1025. review here,

  1026. and I trust

  1027. that you'll

  1028. bear with me

  1029. if I go over

  1030. a couple minutes

  1031. things.

  1032. First point is,

  1033. drunkenness is

  1034. what?

  1035. Prohibited.

  1036. God doesn't

  1037. want believers

  1038. to be drunk

  1039. with wine.

  1040. Ever.

  1041. Drinking,

  1042. we're not

  1043. talking about

  1044. being inebriated,

  1045. we're not

  1046. talking about

  1047. being under

  1048. the influence,

  1049. drinking is

  1050. not prohibited

  1051. in Scripture.

  1052. Let's talk

  1053. about the Bible

  1054. now on

  1055. Christian living.

  1056. Scripture

  1057. clearly prohibits

  1058. drunkenness,

  1059. Scripture does

  1060. not prohibit

  1061. all drinking,

  1062. but that brings

  1063. us back to

  1064. set our

  1065. question in

  1066. the larger

  1067. context of

  1068. Paul's

  1069. instruction to

  1070. the Ephesian

  1071. church.

  1072. And so,

  1073. go back in

  1074. your Bible,

  1075. if you will,

  1076. and we're

  1077. going to keep

  1078. referencing this

  1079. to instruct

  1080. or inform

  1081. our thinking.

  1082. Okay,

  1083. let me read

  1084. for you

  1085. Ephesians

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  1086. chapter 5,

  1087. beginning there

  1088. in verse 15

  1089. and through

  1090. to verse 17,

  1091. it says this,

  1092. Look carefully

  1093. then how you

  1094. walk,

  1095. not as unwise

  1096. but as wise,

  1097. making the

  1098. best use

  1099. of the time

  1100. because the

  1101. days are evil.

  1102. Therefore,

  1103. do not be

  1104. foolish,

  1105. but understand

  1106. what the will

  1107. of the Lord

  1108. is.

  1109. Being wise

  1110. and making

  1111. the most

  1112. of our

  1113. brief time

  1114. in this

  1115. darkened

  1116. world

  1117. calls for

  1118. us to

  1119. think

  1120. carefully

  1121. about

  1122. several

  1123. things.

  1124. For one,

  1125. what is

  1126. God's will

  1127. for wise

  1128. living in

  1129. this dark

  1130. world?

  1131. It says

  1132. be wise,

  1133. well,

  1134. what does

  1135. that mean?

  1136. Immediately

  1137. following that

  1138. statement,

  1139. Paul makes

  1140. this strong

  1141. statement,

  1142. and I

  1143. would broaden

  1144. the context

  1145. to encourage

  1146. you to realize

  1147. this,

  1148. that my

  1149. liberty as a

  1150. believer

  1151. is not a

  1152. cause for

  1153. others to

  1154. stumble.

  1155. Look in

  1156. your Bible

  1157. at Romans

    Romans 14:13–23

  1158. chapter 14

  1159. verse 13

  1160. through 23.

  1161. Go back a

  1162. little bit

  1163. to Romans

    Romans 14:13–23

  1164. chapter 14

  1165. verse 13

  1166. through 23.

  1167. 3.

  1168. Therefore,

  1169. let us not

  1170. pass judgment

  1171. on one

  1172. another any

  1173. longer,

  1174. but rather

  1175. decide never

  1176. to put a

  1177. stumbling block

  1178. or hindrance

  1179. in the way

  1180. of a

  1181. brother.

  1182. other.

  1183. I have a

  1184. responsibility

  1185. as a

  1186. believer to

  1187. other believers

  1188. in particular

  1189. that I am

  1190. not to cause

  1191. them to stumble

  1192. in any

  1193. manner,

  1194. fashion,

  1195. or form.

  1196. Now,

  1197. you may be

  1198. surprised at

  1199. this,

  1200. but there

  1201. are far

  1202. more than

  1203. you think

  1204. in our

  1205. fellowship

  1206. that at

  1207. one time

  1208. or another

  1209. have struggled

  1210. very seriously

  1211. with the

  1212. matter of

  1213. alcohol.

  1214. Would it

  1215. be right

  1216. for me

  1217. to engage

  1218. in doing

  1219. something that

  1220. would harm

  1221. them and

  1222. cause them

  1223. to stumble?

  1224. And what's

  1225. the answer

  1226. from this

  1227. passage?

  1228. Help me

  1229. out.

  1230. What's the

  1231. answer from

  1232. this passage?

  1233. No.

  1234. No.

  1235. Do I have

  1236. a right of

  1237. saying,

  1238. well,

  1239. that's their

  1240. problem?

  1241. No.

  1242. I do want

  1243. you to

  1244. understand

  1245. that

  1246. that I

  1247. think it's

  1248. not merely

  1249. or only

  1250. the matter

  1251. of my

  1252. effect upon

  1253. my fellow

  1254. believer that

  1255. struggles with

  1256. the consumption

  1257. of alcohol,

  1258. but it's

  1259. also my

  1260. effect on

  1261. unbelievers

  1262. that know

  1263. of my walk

  1264. and life

  1265. and pay

  1266. attention to

  1267. my testimony.

  1268. I've got to

  1269. tell you

  1270. something.

  1271. I've lived

  1272. long enough

  1273. where I live

  1274. that everybody

  1275. in my

  1276. neighborhood

  1277. knows that

  1278. I'm a

  1279. Baptist

  1280. pastor.

  1281. I was

  1282. incognito

  1283. for the

  1284. first six

  1285. or eight

  1286. months.

  1287. And during

  1288. that time,

  1289. I worked

  1290. very,

  1291. very hard

  1292. to be

  1293. the

  1294. neighbor

  1295. exceptional.

  1296. You know,

  1297. I mean,

  1298. people needed

  1299. their lawns

  1300. raised,

  1301. I helped

  1302. them.

  1303. People needed

  1304. to snowball

  1305. or run,

  1306. I helped

  1307. them.

  1308. And it

  1309. was after

  1310. the fact

  1311. that they

  1312. discovered

  1313. this

  1314. exceptionally

  1315. friendly and

  1316. helpful guy

  1317. was actually

  1318. a Baptist

  1319. pastor.

  1320. And I

  1321. got to

  1322. tell you,

  1323. my

  1324. neighborhood

  1325. is probably

  1326. a lot

  1327. like your

  1328. neighborhood

  1329. in that

  1330. the people,

  1331. we have a

  1332. really interesting

  1333. mix of the

  1334. dark world

  1335. that we live

  1336. in,

  1337. okay?

  1338. I remember

  1339. when my

  1340. neighbor a

  1341. couple weeks

  1342. ago came

  1343. home from

  1344. a football

  1345. game and

  1346. he was so

  1347. drunk that

  1348. he couldn't

  1349. get out of

  1350. his car.

  1351. I actually

  1352. remember two

  1353. weeks prior to

  1354. that where

  1355. he told me,

  1356. yeah,

  1357. we're getting

  1358. married.

  1359. You know why

  1360. he was laughing?

  1361. Because they'd

  1362. been living

  1363. together for a

  1364. year.

  1365. I mean,

  1366. it was like

  1367. he was a

  1368. little embarrassed.

  1369. Remember,

  1370. I'm a Baptist

  1371. pastor.

  1372. He was a

  1373. little embarrassed

  1374. to tell me

  1375. that we're

  1376. finally going

  1377. to get

  1378. married.

  1379. And I

  1380. have been

  1381. over to

  1382. their homes

  1383. and,

  1384. you know,

  1385. the courtesy

  1386. is to say,

  1387. well,

  1388. here,

  1389. have one.

  1390. Oh,

  1391. you're a

  1392. pastor.

  1393. Sorry.

  1394. It's not like

  1395. I went,

  1396. no.

  1397. EpiPen.

  1398. You know.

  1399. Listen to me.

  1400. They assume.

  1401. They assume.

  1402. This is what I

  1403. ought to do

  1404. because I

  1405. profess that

  1406. Jesus is my

  1407. Lord.

  1408. I've never

  1409. once heard

  1410. from anybody's

  1411. lips

  1412. that you have

  1413. harmed the

  1414. testimony of

  1415. Christ by your

  1416. unwillingness to

  1417. imbibe.

  1418. Never.

  1419. And folks,

  1420. I worked for

  1421. three years in

  1422. the armpit of

  1423. the world in

  1424. international

  1425. harvester.

  1426. Well,

  1427. I am

  1428. sensitive,

  1429. and when I

  1430. think about

  1431. what Bible

  1432. encourages me

  1433. to think about

  1434. in relationship

  1435. to Christian

  1436. living,

  1437. I think it's

  1438. appropriate for

  1439. me to recognize

  1440. that I have to

  1441. be sensitive

  1442. to the

  1443. community he

  1444. put me in.

  1445. several

  1446. illustrations of

  1447. that.

  1448. One would be

  1449. in the passage

  1450. in Jeremiah

    Jeremiah 35:1–14

  1451. chapter 35

  1452. verse 1

  1453. through 14.

  1454. How many of

  1455. you are familiar

  1456. with the

  1457. Rachabites?

  1458. Wave your hand

  1459. at me if you

  1460. are Rachabite

  1461. identifiers.

  1462. The Rachabites,

  1463. I'm going to

  1464. tell the story.

  1465. Jeremiah,

  1466. and by the way,

  1467. he did not have

  1468. a very enthusiastic

  1469. or he didn't

  1470. have the kind

  1471. of pastoral

  1472. ministry that

  1473. anybody would

  1474. want.

  1475. Do you know

  1476. what it was?

  1477. He was going

  1478. around telling

  1479. people that

  1480. God was tired

  1481. of their sin

  1482. and he was

  1483. going to give

  1484. them a lick

  1485. and they

  1486. wouldn't forget.

  1487. He was called

  1488. the weeping

  1489. prophet.

  1490. Anyway,

  1491. God tells

  1492. Jeremiah,

  1493. bring in the

  1494. Rachabites.

  1495. This is a

  1496. tribe or a

  1497. clan of one

  1498. of the tribes

  1499. of Israel,

  1500. and their

  1501. father.

  1502. Now listen

  1503. to this

  1504. because we

  1505. have young

  1506. people today

  1507. who have

  1508. problems following

  1509. their parents'

  1510. instructions after

  1511. they're 18.

  1512. When I'm out

  1513. of the house,

  1514. I'm doing

  1515. what I want.

  1516. Hear that?

  1517. The Rachabites

  1518. had their,

  1519. I don't know,

  1520. their great,

  1521. great,

  1522. great,

  1523. just add

  1524. greats on

  1525. top of that

  1526. because it

  1527. was 240

  1528. years prior

  1529. to the day

  1530. that Jeremiah

  1531. calls the

  1532. Rachabites

  1533. into a room

  1534. and he

  1535. asks them

  1536. to sit

  1537. down and

  1538. then he

  1539. walks out

  1540. and he

  1541. puts little

  1542. jars of

  1543. wine in

  1544. front of

  1545. them.

  1546. Wine.

  1547. Oinos.

  1548. Yayin.

  1549. Clunk,

  1550. clunk,

  1551. clunk.

  1552. And this

  1553. is the

  1554. prophet,

  1555. the pastor,

  1556. says,

  1557. drink it.

  1558. And they

  1559. said,

  1560. no.

  1561. Our

  1562. father,

  1563. Rachab,

  1564. told us

  1565. not to

  1566. do this

  1567. and we're

  1568. not.

  1569. 240

  1570. years,

  1571. this

  1572. particular

  1573. group,

  1574. community,

  1575. family,

  1576. followed

  1577. their

  1578. father's

  1579. mandate.

  1580. The reason

  1581. I bring

  1582. that to

  1583. you is

  1584. that we

  1585. find in

  1586. scripture,

  1587. remember,

  1588. were there

  1589. other people

  1590. in Israel

  1591. at this

  1592. time that

  1593. drank wine

  1594. and did

  1595. not receive

  1596. God's

  1597. thunderous

  1598. curse?

  1599. No.

  1600. They could

  1601. do it.

  1602. Jeremiah

  1603. says,

  1604. hey,

  1605. you guys

  1606. drink this.

  1607. They said,

  1608. no,

  1609. no,

  1610. no.

  1611. Our

  1612. great,

  1613. great,

  1614. great,

  1615. great,

  1616. whatever,

  1617. grandfather

  1618. said,

  1619. don't do

  1620. it and

  1621. we're

  1622. not.

  1623. Here's

  1624. what God

  1625. said.

  1626. You guys

  1627. are an

  1628. illustration

  1629. of a

  1630. people that

  1631. are willing

  1632. to submit.

  1633. And by

  1634. the way,

  1635. when all

  1636. the rest

  1637. of the

  1638. people in

  1639. Israel are

  1640. being butchered

  1641. and mistreated,

  1642. you guys

  1643. are going

  1644. to miraculously

  1645. survive and

  1646. there will

  1647. never lack

  1648. for a man

  1649. to stand

  1650. in my

  1651. presence

  1652. from this

  1653. small group

  1654. of people.

  1655. Let's

  1656. look at

  1657. another

  1658. point,

  1659. passage.

  1660. Acts chapter

    Acts 15 chapter mention

  1661. 15.

  1662. And here's

  1663. the point

  1664. that I'm

  1665. making,

  1666. is that we

  1667. find in

  1668. Scripture that

  1669. while wine

  1670. was generally

  1671. something was

  1672. accepted,

  1673. there are

  1674. illustrations of

  1675. communities that

  1676. chose to not

  1677. engage in it,

  1678. and we

  1679. understand that

  1680. there are

  1681. times,

  1682. we find in

  1683. Scripture,

  1684. where communities

  1685. chose to not

  1686. do certain

  1687. things so that

  1688. they didn't

  1689. compromise the

  1690. effectiveness of

  1691. their testimony.

  1692. Let's look

  1693. now,

  1694. if we would,

  1695. at Acts chapter

    Acts 15 chapter mention

  1696. 15.

  1697. Acts chapter

    Acts 15:20

  1698. 15,

  1699. verse 20.

  1700. Now,

  1701. this is the

  1702. church in

  1703. Jerusalem.

  1704. I'm getting

  1705. hot,

  1706. so bear

  1707. with me.

  1708. The church

  1709. in Jerusalem

  1710. was meeting

  1711. to discuss

  1712. the matter

  1713. of Gentiles

  1714. being brought

  1715. into the

  1716. church.

  1717. And by the

  1718. way,

  1719. the Jews

  1720. wanted the

  1721. Gentiles to

  1722. keep all

  1723. of the Old

  1724. Testament law,

  1725. circumcision,

  1726. the whole

  1727. nine yards,

  1728. Sabbath worship,

  1729. etc.

  1730. And they

  1731. said,

  1732. no.

  1733. But we

  1734. are going

  1735. to ask you

  1736. to do

  1737. four things.

  1738. Look at

  1739. the verse

  1740. in verse

  1741. 20.

  1742. We should

  1743. write to

  1744. them to

  1745. abstain from

  1746. the things

  1747. polluted by

  1748. idols,

  1749. from sexual

  1750. immorality,

  1751. and from the

  1752. thing that has

  1753. been strangled,

  1754. and from

  1755. blood.

  1756. Of that

  1757. list,

  1758. three of

  1759. the four

  1760. are then

  1761. reversed.

  1762. And we

  1763. know that

  1764. they're reversed

  1765. because in

  1766. 1 Corinthians,

  1767. let me double

  1768. check my

  1769. text,

  1770. in 1 Corinthians

  1771. 8,

  1772. remember that

  1773. lengthy discussion

  1774. about the

  1775. matter of

  1776. meat offered

  1777. to idols?

  1778. Paul says,

  1779. hey,

  1780. you can go

  1781. for it.

  1782. Here,

  1783. it says,

  1784. three of the

  1785. four things

  1786. that are on

  1787. that four

  1788. list,

  1789. that list of

  1790. four things,

  1791. are really

  1792. reflective of

  1793. the fact that

  1794. the early

  1795. church had

  1796. its genesis,

  1797. or its

  1798. starting point,

  1799. in the

  1800. Jewish community,

  1801. and in the

  1802. Jewish community,

  1803. these things

  1804. were just

  1805. too much

  1806. to stomach.

  1807. And so,

  1808. the early

  1809. church says,

  1810. you Gentiles,

  1811. don't be

  1812. involved in

  1813. immorality,

  1814. that's a

  1815. permanent

  1816. no-no.

  1817. But the

  1818. other things

  1819. that we

  1820. want you

  1821. to kind

  1822. of decide

  1823. you're not

  1824. going to

  1825. do,

  1826. is you're

  1827. not going

  1828. to give

  1829. offense to

  1830. your Jewish

  1831. brethren.

  1832. You're not

  1833. going to

  1834. hurt them.

  1835. And so,

  1836. we have an

  1837. illustration

  1838. of believers

  1839. choosing to

  1840. submit to

  1841. the well-being

  1842. of the

  1843. community in

  1844. which they

  1845. were placed.

  1846. And I

  1847. think that

  1848. abstaining

  1849. helps a

  1850. Christian's

  1851. testimony in

  1852. our day.

  1853. I really

  1854. do.

  1855. I really

  1856. do.

  1857. That brings

  1858. me to one

  1859. more point.

  1860. Our fellowship

  1861. has a set

  1862. of standards

  1863. of service

  1864. for those

  1865. who are

  1866. called as

  1867. models and

  1868. humbly serve

  1869. as leaders

  1870. in our

  1871. fellowship.

  1872. Very

  1873. interesting what

  1874. it says in

  1875. Proverbs

    Proverbs 31:4

  1876. chapter 31

  1877. verse 4.

  1878. It says,

  1879. listen,

  1880. it is not

  1881. for kings

  1882. and those

  1883. who rule,

  1884. King

  1885. Lemuel,

  1886. it is not

  1887. for kings

  1888. to drink

  1889. and be

  1890. engaged in

  1891. strong drink.

  1892. And the

  1893. reason that

  1894. it is given

  1895. there is

  1896. that

  1897. those who

  1898. engage in

  1899. it lose

  1900. some of

  1901. their ability

  1902. to make

  1903. wise judgments.

  1904. I was

  1905. not here,

  1906. some of you

  1907. are thinking

  1908. I've been

  1909. here forever,

  1910. but I was

  1911. not here

  1912. when this

  1913. church had

  1914. its first

  1915. meeting,

  1916. nor was I

  1917. here when

  1918. the Constitutional

  1919. Committee

  1920. formed and

  1921. went through

  1922. and actually

  1923. did something

  1924. that at

  1925. that time

  1926. was atypical.

  1927. Characteristic

  1928. back in the

  1929. 60s,

  1930. 50s,

  1931. was that

  1932. all churches

  1933. had a church

  1934. covenant.

  1935. How many of you

  1936. remember a church

  1937. that had a church

  1938. covenant?

  1939. Furthermore,

  1940. we will forswear

  1941. that blah,

  1942. blah,

  1943. blah,

  1944. you know,

  1945. and you generally

  1946. went on about

  1947. a whole page

  1948. and I know

  1949. some churches

  1950. have it written

  1951. in the Constitution

  1952. that you must

  1953. recite the

  1954. church covenant

  1955. at least once

  1956. a month.

  1957. I have a

  1958. pastor friend

  1959. that lost

  1960. his job

  1961. because he

  1962. didn't do it.

  1963. This church

  1964. has never

  1965. had a church

  1966. covenant

  1967. that I know

  1968. of,

  1969. but it has

  1970. standards of

  1971. service,

  1972. and the

  1973. standards of

  1974. service

  1975. indicate

  1976. that those

  1977. who serve

  1978. as leaders

  1979. and examples

  1980. and models

  1981. are to be

  1982. exemplary

  1983. in their walk,

  1984. and that

  1985. includes

  1986. the area

  1987. of abstinence.

  1988. So can I say

  1989. with unqualified

  1990. confidence

  1991. that your

  1992. pastors

  1993. and leaders,

  1994. deacons,

  1995. teachers,

  1996. etc.,

  1997. practice abstinence?

  1998. I can tell you

  1999. with a clear

  2000. conscience,

  2001. I know of

  2002. no one

  2003. who is in

  2004. that role

  2005. that does

  2006. not abstain

  2007. from alcohol

  2008. not because

  2009. of a

  2010. biblical

  2011. prohibition

  2012. against wine,

  2013. but because

  2014. of their

  2015. sensitivity

  2016. to the

  2017. testimony

  2018. of Christ

  2019. and the

  2020. well-being

  2021. of the

  2022. bride.

  2023. Listen.

  2024. Do I wish

  2025. that all

  2026. of God's

  2027. people

  2028. desired

  2029. first

  2030. and foremost

  2031. to have

  2032. glorious

  2033. testimonies

  2034. of the

  2035. glory of

  2036. Christ

  2037. and His

  2038. salvation

  2039. and would

  2040. be willing

  2041. to live

  2042. sacrificial

  2043. lives for

  2044. the kingdom?

  2045. That's my

  2046. desire.

  2047. I think

  2048. gospel

  2049. impact

  2050. is enhanced

  2051. by personal

  2052. and private

  2053. pursuit

  2054. of holiness

  2055. and humility.

  2056. And so

  2057. let me kind of

  2058. bring it all

  2059. together

  2060. this way.

  2061. because God

  2062. has placed

  2063. me as a

  2064. believer

  2065. in a

  2066. community,

  2067. I think

  2068. it is

  2069. important

  2070. that all

  2071. I do

  2072. reflect glory

  2073. to His

  2074. name

  2075. and draw

  2076. others to

  2077. Christ.

  2078. Let me

  2079. give you an

  2080. illustration

  2081. from the

  2082. passage.

  2083. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 10 chapter mention

  2084. chapter 10

  2085. 31 through

  2086. 33 and I'm

  2087. just going to

  2088. recite the

  2089. center part

  2090. of it.

  2091. It says

  2092. whatever you

  2093. do,

  2094. whether you

  2095. eat or

  2096. drink,

  2097. what's it

  2098. say?

  2099. Do all

  2100. to the glory

  2101. of Christ.

  2102. Am I going

  2103. to make

  2104. Jesus look

  2105. good?

  2106. So let me

  2107. close with one

  2108. more passage

  2109. and go back

  2110. if you would

  2111. to Ephesians

    Ephesians 5:16

  2112. chapter 5

  2113. verse 16.

  2114. Ephesians

    Ephesians 5:16

  2115. chapter 5

  2116. verse 16.

  2117. Here's what it

  2118. says.

  2119. It says,

  2120. make the

  2121. best use.

  2122. Make the

  2123. best use

  2124. of the

  2125. time

  2126. because the

  2127. days are

  2128. evil.

  2129. I remember

  2130. a week or

  2131. two ago

  2132. saying,

  2133. hey listen,

  2134. getting saved

  2135. means being

  2136. a candle.

  2137. And it

  2138. means keep

  2139. putting in

  2140. dark places,

  2141. right?

  2142. I don't want

  2143. anything to

  2144. cast a shadow

  2145. across the

  2146. clearness of

  2147. the light

  2148. of my life

  2149. or yours.

  2150. Do you

  2151. know why?

  2152. Mark

    Mark 10:45

  2153. chapter 10

  2154. verse 45,

  2155. for the

  2156. son of

  2157. man came

  2158. not to

  2159. be ministered

  2160. unto,

  2161. can you

  2162. cite it

  2163. with me?

  2164. But to

  2165. minister and

  2166. to give

  2167. his life

  2168. a ransom

  2169. for many.

  2170. I want

  2171. to be

  2172. careful that

  2173. the way

  2174. I live

  2175. in no way

  2176. casts a

  2177. shadow

  2178. upon the

  2179. power of

  2180. the gospel

  2181. to save

  2182. and change

  2183. people's

  2184. lives.

  2185. Let's

  2186. close.

  2187. with prayer.

  2188. Father,

  2189. your word

  2190. is a lamp

  2191. unto my

  2192. feet

  2193. and a

  2194. light

  2195. always.

  2196. And I

  2197. and many

  2198. here

  2199. can confess

  2200. that we

  2201. were once

  2202. darkness

  2203. and we

  2204. are now

  2205. light.

  2206. And our

  2207. hearts resonate

  2208. with the

  2209. passage in

  2210. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

  2211. chapter 5

  2212. where it

  2213. says,

  2214. and we

  2215. thus judge

  2216. that if

  2217. all were

  2218. dead,

  2219. that we

  2220. now who

  2221. live because

  2222. of Christ

  2223. live not

  2224. unto

  2225. ourselves,

  2226. but unto

  2227. him who

  2228. died and

  2229. rose again.

  2230. give us

  2231. a passion

  2232. to live

  2233. exemplary

  2234. lives

  2235. in a

  2236. dark

  2237. world.

  2238. And I

  2239. ask this

  2240. in Jesus'

  2241. name.

  2242. Amen.

  2243. Thank you.
