  1. I would like you to turn in your Bibles this morning to Ephesians chapter 6, no, Ephesians chapter

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  2. ! 5, and we are going to be looking at verse 18, the second part of the verse. Let me read it to you,

  3. and then you join me as we pray together. But be filled with the Spirit.

  4. Our Father, prayer for us is not a matter of habit

  5. or the recitation of something that we have, in most cases, planned in advance.

  6. But the absolute expression of our dependence and your sufficiency.

  7. We're reminded, for one, of what John the Baptist said, that a man can have nothing except to be

  8. given of him. And we recognize that you are the giver of every good and perfect gift.

  9. We also recognize that it is your desire and your delight to give good things to your children.

  10. And while there are many physical things that we might ask for, the thing that is most important

  11. is the sweetness of your word and the work of your Spirit in our midst.

  12. We want to be a people that leave here different than we were when we came.

  13. And we realize that to have that take place will require that you do something that is beyond our ability.

  14. And so, in keeping again with Scripture, we ask that you would open our eyes,

  15. that we would behold wonderful truths out of your law,

  16. that the Spirit of God that indwells every believer would enable us to hear

  17. and inform us so that we might understand

  18. and encourage and strengthen us that we might then take that word and apply it

  19. for the glory of Christ.

  20. And we pray it because of Him.

  21. Amen.

  22. I want to begin.

  23. We're going to look at this passage in just a minute,

  24. but I want to begin by having you think practically, realistically,

  25. of really how hard it is to live the Christian life.

  26. Here's the truth.

  27. I see these bumper stickers.

  28. By the way, if you ever see a bumper sticker on my car,

  29. you will have assumed that somebody else put it there.

  30. I see these bumper stickers.

  31. Not perfect, just forgiven.

  32. And there is an element of theological truth to that,

  33. but I wonder if more often than not,

  34. they are really a reflection of a carelessness towards what the Scripture teaches

  35. about godly living.

  36. Let me give you a couple frames to operate in

  37. so you can kind of think about this with me a little bit.

  38. Remember what Jesus said to His disciples,

  39. unless your righteousness,

  40. who can fill it out for me,

  41. exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees,

  42. you shall in no wise enter into the kingdom.

  43. I mean, that's a pretty hard pill to swallow.

  44. Let's try another one so we have it in our mind.

  45. I want you to turn in your Bible.

  46. Keep your finger, because we're coming back to Ephesians,

  47. but I want you to turn in your Bible to Romans 8, verse 1.

    Romans 8:1

  48. Romans 8, verse 1.

    Romans 8:1

  49. It says,

  50. There is now therefore no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

  51. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus

  52. from the law of sin and death.

  53. For God has done what the law weakened by the flesh could not do

  54. by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin,

  55. and He condemns sin in the flesh

  56. in order that the righteous requirement of the law

  57. might be fulfilled in us.

  58. Now, what's the remainder of the text?

  59. Look at it carefully.

  60. Who walk not according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.

  61. Do we earn our salvation by our walk?

  62. The answer is categorically and undeniably no.

  63. But are we as believers to walk in the light as He is in the light,

  64. and is our life to be an example and a testament of the power of God at work in us?

  65. What's the answer?

  66. Let me tell you something.

  67. One of the principal witnesses to the power of the gospel,

  68. which for one thing promises us an eternity that we cannot see.

  69. Would you agree with that?

  70. We can't see eternity.

  71. One of the things that bears strong testimony to the power of the gospel

  72. is the power of the gospel to change people now from what they used to be

  73. to what they can be and what they will someday be.

  74. Would you agree with that?

  75. And God intends for your life to be an evidence of the fact that God who can save

  76. can also change you.

  77. And I want you to understand that that's a pretty sobering thought.

  78. I am supposed to be a walking example of a God who can make people different.

  79. That's pretty challenging.

  80. And you know, the truth of the matter is,

  81. is we get around that challenge by just frankly not thinking about it.

  82. By not paying much attention to it.

  83. By not really thinking that it's all that realistic in expectation,

  84. and yet the Scriptures over and over again talk about the fact

  85. that the life of the believer is to be undeniably and radically different

  86. than the life of the unbeliever.

  87. My wife and I were engaged in conversation earlier this week,

  88. and she made reference to one individual.

  89. And just listening to the individual talk, she said,

  90. you must be a believer.

  91. Never met this person before.

  92. He said, well, how did you know?

  93. Well, there are little giveaways.

  94. It wasn't that he was making the sign of the cross.

  95. It was just generally a pleasing countenance and a happy spirit

  96. and a thankful tone in his life.

  97. And as the conversation progressed, it's like,

  98. oh, there's something different about you.

  99. I do want you to understand that as we think about the passage

  100. that we're going to understand this morning,

  101. we're going to study this morning,

  102. it is a very, very significant passage

  103. for understanding how the believer is to live.

  104. And I think the thing that we need to understand

  105. is that being spirit-filled is essential.

  106. For apart from being spirit-filled,

  107. we cannot live the way Christ intends.

  108. Now, the remainder of the book of Ephesians

  109. is going to, for the most part, deal with relationships.

  110. We're going to receive instruction from God

  111. on how we are to relate to one another

  112. with a submissive and generous spirit.

  113. We're going to find out how a wife is to follow her husband,

  114. how a husband is to love his wife,

  115. how children are to obey their parents,

  116. and how employees are to relate

  117. to those who are their employers.

  118. It's fair to say that when we think about

  119. what lies in front, and it's going to be primarily

  120. focusing on the issue of relationships,

  121. we would have to agree that relationships,

  122. at the end of the day, are a pretty messy business.

  123. Would you agree with me?

  124. They are.

  125. And the reason for that is because

  126. it puts sinners in close proximity with each other,

  127. and when they are in close proximity with each other,

  128. there is a multiplier there of that proximity,

  129. and the two sinful individuals are more.

  130. And so I want you to understand this morning

  131. that when we recognize that relationships

  132. are challenging at best,

  133. we need to understand that

  134. God intends for us to succeed in those relationships

  135. and to honor Christ in doing so,

  136. and the only way that we will succeed

  137. at accomplishing the things that He calls us to do

  138. are to walk and be filled with the Spirit of God.

  139. Now, with that in mind,

  140. let me take some time to lay out some background information

  141. that I think is actually important

  142. in our understanding of the matter of being filled with the Spirit.

  143. Let me begin, first of all,

  144. by talking about what the Bible is not talking about.

  145. The Bible uses a variety of terms

  146. to refer to the relationship of the Spirit of God to the believer,

  147. and we do well to distinguish them

  148. and to recognize that each has a purpose

  149. that in some aspects is distinct from the others.

  150. The common characteristic in all

  151. is that the Spirit is the one involved,

  152. but we look at different statements

  153. such as being baptized in the Spirit,

  154. being indwelt with the Spirit,

  155. being led by the Spirit,

  156. walking by the Spirit,

  157. being filled by the Spirit,

  158. grieving the Spirit.

  159. There are a number of different things

  160. that are said in relationship to those things,

  161. and we sometimes kind of just lump them all together

  162. and think, well, it's about the Spirit,

  163. and so there we are.

  164. Let me explain, first of all,

  165. that the indwelling and baptism of the Spirit

  166. refers to what happens as a part of our salvation.

  167. If you are saved here today,

  168. if you know Christ,

  169. you have the Spirit of God inside you.

  170. I didn't say that.

  171. Christ did.

  172. And I want you to recognize

  173. that this is a Bible truth

  174. that is not dependent upon the way you feel

  175. or even how you're acting.

  176. Remember over in 1 Corinthians chapter 6

    1 Corinthians 6 chapter mention

  177. where the apostle says,

  178. listen, he says,

  179. you need to get this straight.

  180. When you are involved in immorality,

  181. you are dragging the Spirit of God

  182. into that very relationship.

  183. Do you think the Spirit would like to bail

  184. when you look at pornography?

  185. Yes.

  186. But he doesn't.

  187. He is in you.

  188. He is there.

  189. He stays there

  190. because from the moment of your salvation,

  191. you have the Spirit of God indwelling you.

  192. Over in Romans chapter 8,

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  193. and I want you to look at that passage

  194. just for a moment.

  195. Romans chapter 8, verse 8.

    Romans 8:8

  196. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God,

  197. but you, however, are not in the flesh,

  198. but in the Spirit,

  199. if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you.

  200. How do you distinguish

  201. between an unsaved person and a saved person?

  202. In this context,

  203. it is the matter of the Spirit of God

  204. indwelling that believer.

  205. Look also, if you would, at verse 11.

  206. If the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead

  207. dwells in you,

  208. He who raised Jesus Christ from the dead

  209. will also give life to your mortal bodies

  210. through His Spirit who dwells in you.

  211. So in other words, the enabling,

  212. the way in which I live the spiritual life,

  213. the way I live the Christian life

  214. to bring glory to Christ

  215. is not just by working on a set

  216. of self-improvement rules,

  217. but by trusting,

  218. excuse me,

  219. the indwelling Spirit to work

  220. and do His work in me.

  221. Go back, if you will,

  222. to Ephesians chapter 4,

    Ephesians 4:4

  223. verse 4 and 5,

  224. and we read there,

  225. it says this,

  226. it says,

  227. there is one body and one Spirit

  228. just as you were called

  229. in one hope that belongs in your calling,

  230. one Lord,

  231. one faith,

  232. one baptism.

  233. So we understand that

  234. the infilling and the baptism

  235. of the Holy Spirit

  236. refer to something

  237. that takes place at our salvation.

  238. Second,

  239. the filling of the Spirit

  240. and the walking in the Spirit

  241. relate to His empower

  242. and His controlling,

  243. to His empowering

  244. and His controlling,

  245. and we'll deal a little bit more

  246. with that as we work our way through,

  247. but just in general terms,

  248. identify the fact that

  249. indwelling and baptism

  250. are something that happens

  251. at our conversion,

  252. and the filling

  253. and the walking of the Spirit

  254. relate more to the matter

  255. of His empowering us

  256. and His controlling us.

  257. I want you to understand,

  258. furthermore,

  259. that the filling of the Spirit

  260. is not a second work of grace.

  261. It's not something that takes place

  262. after we've reached

  263. a certain level of spirituality,

  264. after we've prayed

  265. to a certain state,

  266. after we've come to a certain level

  267. of earnestness,

  268. that it then kind of happens

  269. as a result of our ongoing pursuit.

  270. And we see that undeniably

  271. in the text that we're looking at right now.

  272. Look back, if you would,

  273. at Ephesians 5, verse 18,

    Ephesians 5:18

  274. and if we are...

  275. And stop just for a minute

  276. because I think this is important.

  277. If we are going to allow

  278. our opinions to be formed

  279. by the Scriptures themselves,

  280. then we have to take

  281. the vocabulary seriously.

  282. And what the Apostle says

  283. there in verse 18,

  284. it says,

  285. but be filled with the Spirit.

  286. And the way in which

  287. that is put in the text,

  288. it says,

  289. keep being filled.

  290. It's not like,

  291. hey, get it poured in

  292. and that's it.

  293. It's like day by day,

  294. moment by moment,

  295. keep on working

  296. at being filled

  297. with the Spirit of God.

  298. Third,

  299. the filling of the Spirit

  300. is not a reference

  301. to extra-biblical behaviors

  302. or the teachings of our day.

  303. I was sick last week.

  304. I was reduced to whispering

  305. for the sake of

  306. intelligible conversation.

  307. And given that,

  308. I had a low-grade fever

  309. and several other things.

  310. I decided,

  311. you know,

  312. I am going to stay at home.

  313. It was not a fun thing to do

  314. except for the privilege

  315. I had of lying in bed

  316. and praying

  317. and knowing that God

  318. was working in our fellowship

  319. and that you were being taught

  320. the Word of God.

  321. You were enjoying

  322. the Word of God.

  323. You were singing.

  324. By the way,

  325. I knew the songs

  326. that we had picked

  327. that we were going to sing.

  328. I really wanted to sing them.

  329. I had to lie in bed

  330. and just pray for you.

  331. But I enjoyed that.

  332. Then I got out of bed

  333. and I thought,

  334. well, you know,

  335. hey,

  336. I know what I'm going to be

  337. preaching on next week

  338. so I think I'll channel surf.

  339. And so what I did

  340. was I watched

  341. a wide variety of...

  342. Let me name them.

  343. I watched

  344. Serfalo Dollar.

  345. I watched Joel Osteen.

  346. I watched T.D. Jakes.

  347. I watched Joyce Myers.

  348. I watched Rod Parsley

  349. and threw in a couple others.

  350. And I watched them carefully.

  351. I watched them listening

  352. to see,

  353. okay,

  354. so what are the things

  355. that they are saying?

  356. I was surprised.

  357. I was surprised

  358. at the commonality.

  359. What does that mean?

  360. Pretty much,

  361. they both said the same things.

  362. They all said the same things.

  363. Now,

  364. before I address

  365. the next set of points,

  366. I want you to know

  367. that I sincerely desire

  368. my comments

  369. to be governed by two things.

  370. that what I say

  371. is clearly

  372. from the Scriptures.

  373. And secondly,

  374. that what I say

  375. is gentle

  376. and not sarcastic

  377. of those

  378. that have been led

  379. astray

  380. by spiritual

  381. charlatans.

  382. I have dear friends

  383. that I have known

  384. over the years

  385. that are of slightly

  386. different persuasions

  387. and I do not want

  388. my observations

  389. to be anything

  390. but winsome

  391. and textual.

  392. So,

  393. let me say this

  394. in relationship

  395. to the matter

  396. of what we're going

  397. to talk about now

  398. when we say

  399. that being filled

  400. with the Spirit

  401. is not a reference

  402. to extra-biblical behaviors

  403. or the teachings

  404. of our day.

  405. We understand

  406. that being filled

  407. with the Spirit

  408. is not evidenced

  409. by the charismatic

  410. gifts in the book

  411. of Acts.

  412. Being filled

  413. with the Spirit

  414. is not evidenced

  415. by the charismatic

  416. gifts referenced

  417. in the book

  418. of Acts,

  419. such as tongues,

  420. prophecies,

  421. and healings.

  422. I have no doubt

  423. and I wholeheartedly

  424. affirm that what

  425. took place

  426. in the book

  427. of Acts

  428. indeed was

  429. the dramatic

  430. demonstration

  431. of the power

  432. of the Spirit

  433. of God,

  434. but what we see

  435. happening today

  436. has no bearing

  437. or credible

  438. relationship

  439. to what we see

  440. happen back

  441. during that time.

  442. Let me give you

  443. a little comparison.

  444. The purpose

  445. of a miracle

  446. or a demonstration

  447. of divine power

  448. ultimately

  449. is to confirm

  450. the message

  451. and the messenger.

  452. Does that make sense

  453. to you?

  454. Nod your head

  455. if that's just

  456. intuitively obvious.

  457. Yeah,

  458. it makes sense.

  459. Here's Moses,

  460. stomps out of the wilderness,

  461. you know,

  462. and by the way,

  463. how did God

  464. get Moses' attention?

  465. Try a little burning bush.

  466. Now,

  467. was that a little miraculous?

  468. It got Moses' attention.

  469. It made Moses listen.

  470. And God said to Moses,

  471. you're going to be

  472. my spokesperson.

  473. Yeah,

  474. well,

  475. yeah,

  476. they're not going

  477. to listen to me.

  478. Oh,

  479. what do you have

  480. in your hand?

  481. What was it?

  482. A rod.

  483. Throw it down.

  484. What happened?

  485. Snake.

  486. And remember,

  487. one miracle after another,

  488. he finally got back

  489. in front of Pharaoh

  490. and the Pharaoh's magicians,

  491. and he says,

  492. God says,

  493. let my people go.

  494. Yeah.

  495. We're going to get rid

  496. of our labor force.

  497. Can you walk,

  498. imagine you walking

  499. into upper management

  500. and says,

  501. hey,

  502. turn them loose.

  503. Moses?

  504. Yeah.

  505. Who said?

  506. Threw down the rod

  507. and it became a snake

  508. and what did the magicians do?

  509. They were able to fake

  510. a couple of these things,

  511. remember?

  512. But finally,

  513. as Moses upped the ante,

  514. what did they say?

  515. I love this.

  516. This is the finger of God.

  517. This is something God did.

  518. A miracle ultimately points

  519. to the miraculous,

  520. to God.

  521. And so,

  522. the things that took place

  523. in the book of Acts,

  524. undeniably,

  525. were miraculous demonstrations

  526. of the power of God.

  527. In the three areas,

  528. in the matter of tongues,

  529. in the matter of prophecies,

  530. in the matter of healings,

  531. let me explain that tongues,

  532. the ones that were spoken of

  533. in Acts chapter 2,

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  534. were understandable languages.

  535. I listened to one particular person

  536. last Sunday,

  537. babbling,

  538. babbling.

  539. And I can tell you

  540. that he was not speaking in tongues

  541. according to the New Testament passage

  542. because the text makes it clear

  543. that the tongues

  544. were a demonstration of divine power,

  545. namely in that people understood

  546. the dialect

  547. miraculously.

  548. Interestingly,

  549. interestingly,

  550. and just a little side note on this,

  551. back in the early 1900s,

  552. I think it was 1904,

  553. 1912,

  554. something like that,

  555. there was the resurgence

  556. of the tongues movement

  557. actually came into being.

  558. And the proponents

  559. of speaking in tongues

  560. as an evidence

  561. of the power

  562. of the Spirit of God

  563. proposed initially

  564. that these languages

  565. were actually

  566. foreign dialects

  567. in context

  568. in context

  569. of the passage

  570. and over in Acts chapter 2,

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  571. etc.

  572. And as a result,

  573. the first missionary

  574. sent out

  575. by the charismatics

  576. did not need

  577. language training

  578. at all.

  579. Do you got that?

  580. That is an intelligent

  581. conclusion

  582. if your supposition

  583. is that

  584. the gift

  585. was the ability

  586. to communicate

  587. in foreign dialects.

  588. Does that make sense?

  589. Yesterday,

  590. I walked into Speedway.

  591. The man there

  592. that was working

  593. at the counter,

  594. his name was Gopal.

  595. Now, for some of you,

  596. it's like, so?

  597. And I walked up

  598. to Gopal

  599. and I said,

  600. Apni Kaminach

  601. and I asked him,

  602. I said,

  603. how are you doing?

  604. I said it in Bengali

  605. and he looked at me like,

  606. I said,

  607. Apkassahe.

  608. Now,

  609. Bengali and Hindi

  610. are very close.

  611. I mean,

  612. big deal to me.

  613. But he looked at me

  614. and he said,

  615. where did you learn this?

  616. Oh, I grew up in India.

  617. Really?

  618. See,

  619. I can speak

  620. three different dialects

  621. because I grew up

  622. in a community

  623. and it would be a miracle

  624. for me to speak Japanese.

  625. Do you understand that, Tom?

  626. If I started speaking

  627. in Japanese,

  628. other than Konnichiwa

  629. or whatever,

  630. you know,

  631. I've learned that from Tom

  632. and he's probably,

  633. thank you,

  634. thank you,

  635. thank you.

  636. I am infinitely better

  637. than last week

  638. but

  639. don't want to put it over

  640. where the Kleenex are.

  641. So,

  642. let me explain

  643. being filled with the Spirit

  644. is not talking about

  645. the miraculous power

  646. that we see at Acts.

  647. Recognize that the tongues

  648. were foreign dialects.

  649. Secondly,

  650. we recognize

  651. that the prophecies

  652. that took place

  653. were backed up

  654. by 100% accuracy.

  655. Beloved,

  656. this is not small potatoes.

  657. I cannot understand

  658. why well-informed people

  659. who care about the truth

  660. allow the chicanery

  661. and the deceit

  662. to go on

  663. where there are all these

  664. kind of prophetic utterances

  665. that have no connection

  666. with Scripture.

  667. And by the way,

  668. I want you to understand

  669. that in the Old Testament

  670. when someone said

  671. that there was going to be

  672. something that happened

  673. and it didn't happen,

  674. there was a short shelf life

  675. for that person.

  676. Do you know why?

  677. They were stoned.

  678. We have about four or five.

  679. I'm not proposing

  680. and some of you

  681. are going to go out

  682. and say he said that

  683. but I didn't.

  684. I'm not proposing

  685. that we have stonings

  686. but I can guarantee you

  687. that it would really clean up

  688. a lot of these

  689. fake faux prophecies

  690. if what we had

  691. is God deal with

  692. a couple of them.

  693. Third,

  694. the healings

  695. that took place

  696. in the New Testament

  697. were immediate

  698. and complete

  699. and without contingencies.

  700. They were complete,

  701. they were immediate

  702. and they were without contingencies.

  703. I have been reading

  704. through the book of John

  705. and one of the things

  706. that I was reading

  707. this morning

  708. is when John healed

  709. the man who'd been born blind,

  710. he didn't ask the guy

  711. if he was a believer.

  712. By the way,

  713. when he healed the man

  714. at the pool of Bethesda,

  715. remember?

  716. The guy,

  717. Jesus says,

  718. what are you doing here?

  719. This is a free rendition.

  720. What are you doing?

  721. Well, I'm here

  722. to try to get healed.

  723. Oh yeah?

  724. But I can't get down

  725. to the pool.

  726. Jesus said,

  727. take up your bed and walk.

  728. And what happened?

  729. Bada, bada, bing.

  730. Bada, bada, boom.

  731. Up he goes,

  732. grabs his bed,

  733. starts walking

  734. and the Pharisees say,

  735. whoa,

  736. don't you know?

  737. It's the Sabbath.

  738. He says,

  739. you know,

  740. I understand that

  741. but the guy who healed me,

  742. he said do it.

  743. God has the right

  744. to tell me what to do.

  745. By the way,

  746. he's the one who healed me.

  747. And when we find the deceit,

  748. I tell you,

  749. when God heals,

  750. it's immediate

  751. and it's complete.

  752. And what do I mean

  753. by no contingencies?

  754. Do you know

  755. what a contingency is?

  756. The large print addeth

  757. and the small print

  758. taketh away.

  759. And as I listened

  760. to all of the

  761. aforementioned speakers,

  762. I noticed

  763. one common word.

  764. Do you know

  765. what it was?

  766. Seed faith.

  767. Seed faith.

  768. Seed faith.

  769. Seed faith.

  770. Now,

  771. by the way,

  772. I'll warn you

  773. that somewhere

  774. in the next month

  775. or so,

  776. I will do

  777. what I have done

  778. for,

  779. Lord willing,

  780. will be 27 years

  781. and that is

  782. preach on,

  783. hey,

  784. hey,

  785. hey,

  786. we're getting there.

  787. And you will not

  788. hear me talk about

  789. seed faith.

  790. Sadly,

  791. in an attempt

  792. to be humble

  793. and generous,

  794. far too many

  795. loving believers

  796. have been hesitant

  797. to demand

  798. that all doctrine

  799. be intelligently

  800. judged by Scriptures.

  801. And this lack

  802. of commitment

  803. to the sufficiency

  804. and the supremacy

  805. of Scripture

  806. has unleashed

  807. a torrent

  808. of aberrant

  809. doctrines

  810. such as the

  811. prosperity

  812. teaching

  813. of our day.

  814. And all of that

  815. has nothing

  816. at all

  817. to do

  818. with the filling

  819. of the Spirit.

  820. So,

  821. what does it mean

  822. to be filled

  823. with the Spirit?

  824. Let's begin

  825. by recognizing,

  826. first of all,

  827. that the text

  828. gives us

  829. an explicit command

  830. and what it means

  831. is that being

  832. Spirit-filled

  833. is not something

  834. that happens

  835. passively.

  836. It's not something

  837. that's just an

  838. arbitrary whim

  839. on the part of God.

  840. The idea

  841. that the Spirit

  842. falls on certain

  843. individuals

  844. who have then

  845. been slain

  846. by the Spirit,

  847. knocked flat,

  848. has no biblical

  849. merit.

  850. In the simplest

  851. terms,

  852. being filled

  853. means choosing

  854. to be affected

  855. and empowered

  856. by the indwelling

  857. Spirit of God.

  858. And I say this

  859. because the text

  860. gives us

  861. an explicit

  862. command

  863. that I

  864. that you

  865. are to choose

  866. to be filled.

  867. I love what

  868. one Bible teacher

  869. has to say on this.

  870. He says this,

  871. it is one thing

  872. for you to have

  873. the Holy Spirit

  874. within you.

  875. Does every believer

  876. have the Holy Spirit

  877. within you?

  878. And what's the answer?

  879. We just learn

  880. absolutely.

  881. It's one thing

  882. to have the Holy Spirit

  883. within you.

  884. It's another thing

  885. to have

  886. the Spirit

  887. have you.

  888. the way

  889. John Bunyan

  890. put it.

  891. You remember

  892. John Bunyan

  893. who wrote what?

  894. What book?

  895. Hey, good job.

  896. By the way,

  897. should that be a book

  898. that you read?

  899. That's a good book

  900. to read.

  901. Here's what

  902. John Bunyan

  903. said that I really

  904. liked.

  905. Sailors cannot

  906. create the wind

  907. but they can

  908. raise the sail

  909. that pushes

  910. the boat.

  911. That's nice,

  912. isn't it?

  913. Sailors cannot

  914. create the wind

  915. but they can

  916. raise the sail

  917. that pushes

  918. the boat.

  919. I want you

  920. to understand

  921. furthermore

  922. that the Holy Spirit

  923. is not an abstract

  924. force

  925. but is the third

  926. person of the Trinity

  927. and He is in

  928. every believer.

  929. Yet the believer

  930. is called to choose

  931. to allow the

  932. indwelling Spirit

  933. to instruct,

  934. to illuminate,

  935. to empower,

  936. to control.

  937. It may be helping

  938. our understanding

  939. here to go back

  940. just for a moment

  941. to the comparison

  942. Paul started out

  943. with there in

  944. verse 18,

  945. the first part

  946. and you remember

  947. that's where I

  948. actually started

  949. several weeks ago

  950. when I said

  951. don't be drunk

  952. with wine

  953. for that is

  954. debauchery.

  955. Paul was making

  956. a comparison

  957. between choosing

  958. to be drunk.

  959. Do men have to

  960. choose to be drunk?

  961. Essentially,

  962. yes,

  963. the answer is

  964. they do

  965. because you

  966. have to keep

  967. on doing it

  968. until it has

  969. an effect

  970. and He says

  971. don't make

  972. that choice.

  973. What you have

  974. to choose

  975. by comparison

  976. is to allow

  977. the Spirit

  978. of God

  979. to be the one

  980. who is influencing

  981. your life

  982. rather than

  983. something else.

  984. Let me say

  985. something else

  986. that I want you

  987. to understand.

  988. This is important.

  989. Being filled

  990. with the Spirit

  991. is God's plan

  992. for normal

  993. Christian living.

  994. I don't think

  995. we believe that.

  996. Being filled

  997. with the Spirit

  998. is God's plan

  999. for normal

  1000. Christian living.

  1001. Question.

  1002. Can people

  1003. always tell

  1004. if you're filled

  1005. with the Spirit?

  1006. And what's

  1007. the answer?

  1008. By the way,

  1009. next week

  1010. I'm going

  1011. to preach

  1012. on singing.

  1013. And I have

  1014. asked John,

  1015. we're going

  1016. to sing

  1017. our favorites

  1018. and we are

  1019. going to blow

  1020. the roof

  1021. off of here.

  1022. We haven't

  1023. decided yet,

  1024. have we,

  1025. John?

  1026. Okay,

  1027. but I'm hoping

  1028. I'm voting

  1029. for Lion of Judah

  1030. for one,

  1031. you know,

  1032. with horns.

  1033. We're thinking

  1034. about that,

  1035. okay?

  1036. And then

  1037. 10,000 reasons,

  1038. these are others

  1039. that I'm voting

  1040. for,

  1041. I want you

  1042. to know.

  1043. I don't always

  1044. get my way,

  1045. in fact,

  1046. there's a rumor

  1047. that seldom

1048. do I get my way.

  1049. But anyway,

  1050. these are ones

  1051. I'm voting

  1052. for,

  1053. and here's

  1054. what I want.

  1055. I want us

  1056. to come,

  1057. next week I

  1058. want us

  1059. to come

  1060. filled with

  1061. the Spirit

  1062. ready to

  1063. blow the roof

  1064. off.

  1065. Hmm?

  1066. Can you

  1067. always tell

  1068. if a person

  1069. is Spirit

  1070. filled?

  1071. No.

  1072. But you

  1073. can always

  1074. tell when

  1075. they're not.

  1076. Right?

  1077. Huh?

  1078. Right?

  1079. What's not

  1080. filled look

  1081. like?

  1082. For Tim

  1083. Kenoyer,

  1084. it's grumpy,

  1085. it's pouty,

  1086. it's moody,

  1087. it's surly,

  1088. it's sarcastic,

  1089. it's unwilling.

  1090. Am I striking

  1091. any of you

  1092. that you,

  1093. yeah,

  1094. I can recognize

  1095. that.

  1096. I could ask

  1097. my wife to

  1098. fill out the

  1099. remainder of

  1100. the list.

  1101. Yeah,

  1102. she knows.

  1103. She doesn't

  1104. know all the

  1105. time when

  1106. I'm filled

  1107. with the

  1108. Spirit,

  1109. but she

  1110. does know

  1111. when I'm

  1112. not.

  1113. I do want

  1114. you to

  1115. understand,

  1116. coming back

  1117. again,

  1118. being filled

  1119. with the

  1120. Spirit is

  1121. God's plan

  1122. for normal

  1123. Christian

  1124. living.

  1125. I had

  1126. to think

  1127. back again

  1128. to last

  1129. week,

  1130. and I

  1131. remember

  1132. one

  1133. televangelist

  1134. actually

  1135. dramatizing

  1136. what it

  1137. was like

  1138. to be

  1139. filled

  1140. with the

  1141. Spirit,

  1142. and he

  1143. was

  1144. twitching,

  1145. and he

  1146. was

  1147. demonstrating

  1148. a variety

  1149. of behaviors

  1150. and sounds,

  1151. and here's

  1152. what I

  1153. was trying

  1154. to do.

  1155. Honestly,

  1156. what I

  1157. was trying

  1158. to do

  1159. was reference

  1160. what was

  1161. going on

  1162. on his

  1163. behavior

  1164. on TV

  1165. with everything

  1166. I know

  1167. in the

  1168. scriptures.

  1169. I wanted

  1170. to be fair

  1171. and say,

  1172. okay,

  1173. where in the

  1174. Bible does

  1175. that kind

  1176. of behavior

  1177. seem to

  1178. fit in?

  1179. Not there.

  1180. So,

  1181. let me

  1182. clearly declare

  1183. what the

  1184. Bible says

  1185. about being

  1186. filled with

  1187. the Spirit.

  1188. Being filled

  1189. with the

  1190. Spirit means

  1191. being sensitive

  1192. to his

  1193. person and

  1194. his presence.

  1195. Being sensitive

  1196. to his

  1197. person and

  1198. his presence.

  1199. Influenced

  1200. by the fact

  1201. that you

  1202. know he's

  1203. in you

  1204. and he's

  1205. there.

  1206. Turn in

  1207. your Bible,

  1208. if you will,

  1209. to John

    John 16:7

  1210. chapter 16

  1211. verse 7.

  1212. John

    John 16:7

  1213. chapter 16

  1214. verse 7,

  1215. Jesus says

  1216. this,

  1217. nevertheless I

  1218. tell you the

  1219. truth,

  1220. it's to your

  1221. advantage that

  1222. I go away,

  1223. for if I do

  1224. not go away,

  1225. the helper

  1226. will not

  1227. come to you,

  1228. but if I

  1229. go, I will

  1230. send him

  1231. to you,

  1232. the person

  1233. of the

  1234. Holy Spirit.

  1235. And Jesus

  1236. says,

  1237. listen,

  1238. I'm leaving

  1239. and when he

  1240. said that,

  1241. I want you

  1242. to imagine

  1243. that here

  1244. are the

  1245. disciples in

  1246. the third

  1247. year of

  1248. their being

  1249. around Jesus.

  1250. And remember

  1251. over in

  1252. John chapter

    John 6 chapter mention

  1253. 6 when

  1254. Jesus had

  1255. finished his

  1256. absolutely

  1257. drop-dead

  1258. sermon and

  1259. most everybody

  1260. else had

  1261. scampered and

  1262. he looked to

  1263. his disciples

  1264. and he said,

  1265. are you guys

  1266. going too?

  1267. And what did

  1268. Peter say?

  1269. He said,

  1270. where are we

  1271. going to go?

  1272. Who else

  1273. has the words

  1274. of life?

  1275. They recognized

  1276. the supremacy

  1277. and the sweetness

  1278. of Christ and

  1279. they said,

  1280. you're the one.

  1281. And to that

  1282. listening group

  1283. of men,

  1284. he says,

  1285. hey,

  1286. listen,

  1287. it's a good

  1288. thing that I

  1289. leave you

  1290. because when

  1291. I leave,

  1292. you are going

  1293. to get

  1294. the helper.

  1295. He'll be

  1296. with you.

  1297. The person.

  1298. The person.

  1299. The person.

  1300. Let me tell you

  1301. something.

  1302. I remember

  1303. reading earlier

  1304. this week,

  1305. I think it was

  1306. David Powelson

  1307. was talking

  1308. about counseling

  1309. ministry.

  1310. I said,

  1311. there are often

  1312. days where he

  1313. looks at his

  1314. caseload and

  1315. responsibilities he

  1316. has in ministering

  1317. to the hearts of

  1318. people and he

  1319. knows the

  1320. brokenness and the

  1321. heartache and the

  1322. difficulty they're

  1323. facing and he

  1324. finds himself going

  1325. into that situation

  1326. and as he ponders

  1327. the weight of the

  1328. moment, he finds

  1329. himself not normally

  1330. thinking, I can't

  1331. do this.

  1332. And then he

  1333. prays and said,

  1334. God, you have

  1335. to help me.

  1336. And he then

  1337. reminds himself

  1338. that it's not by

  1339. might nor by

  1340. power but by my

  1341. spirit, saith the

  1342. Lord.

  1343. To be filled

  1344. with the spirit,

  1345. for one thing,

  1346. means that we are

  1347. sensitive to his

  1348. person and his

  1349. presence.

  1350. We show our

  1351. regard for his

  1352. presence incidentally

  1353. by not grieving

  1354. him with

  1355. disobedience or

  1356. quenching him by

  1357. refusing his

  1358. control.

  1359. We show our

  1360. regard for his

  1361. presence, you're

  1362. here, by not

  1363. grieving him with

  1364. disobedience or

  1365. quenching him by

  1366. refusing his

  1367. control.

  1368. I used this

  1369. illustration earlier

  1370. when I was

  1371. teaching Sunday

  1372. school but it's a

  1373. good illustration

  1374. unfortunately.

  1375. I was watching

  1376. the football game

  1377. Saturday and I

  1378. had a moment

  1379. where my

  1380. carnality absolutely

  1381. topped out the

  1382. chart.

  1383. There was a

  1384. little kickback

  1385. runback that

  1386. then kind of

  1387. devolved into a

  1388. fracas and you

  1389. know there were

  1390. punches being

  1391. thrown and blah

  1392. blah blah.

  1393. And I, of

  1394. course, I

  1395. confess that after

  1396. 27 years I've

  1397. finally become an

  1398. actual true to

  1399. life Buckeye fan.

  1400. I don't wear the

  1401. hat and things like

  1402. that.

  1403. I don't flag but I

  1404. am a little bit of a

  1405. Buckeye fan and so

  1406. when the fight was

  1407. over I thought

  1408. righteousness would

  1409. probably be served if

  1410. there were four or

  1411. five of the Michigan

  1412. players that were

  1413. rejected.

  1414. So I'm waiting

  1415. patiently for

  1416. judgment to fall

  1417. from high, you know.

1418. and then I thought of

  1419. the worst case scenario,

  1420. you know, maybe a

  1421. couple of the chumps

  1422. would be kicked off

  1423. and here's what

  1424. happened.

1425. It was a two for one

  1426. deal and I thought

  1427. this is where my

  1428. flesh got the best

  1429. of me.

  1430. I was sitting there

1431. in my living room and

  1432. I was actually angry.

  1433. I was very angry.

  1434. I was even having

  1435. momentary murderous

  1436. thoughts.

  1437. I mean, I was just

  1438. like, oh, yeah.

  1439. People's cars are

1440. going to be keyed when

  1441. they come down.

  1442. I'm sorry.

  1443. This is wickedness

1444. and I'm not proud of

1445. it but I'm telling you

  1446. the truth.

  1447. And the Spirit of

1448. God tapped me on the

  1449. shoulder and said,

  1450. Tim, what are you

  1451. doing?

  1452. The Spirit of God

  1453. brought back verses

  1454. to my mind.

  1455. You follow that?

  1456. The wrath of man

  1457. doesn't work the

  1458. righteousness of God.

  1459. Ooh.

  1460. And then the real

  1461. kicker was where

  1462. Jesus, remember where

  1463. he says, my kingdom

1464. is not of this world

1465. because if this was my

  1466. kingdom, my servants

  1467. would be fighting and

  1468. I thought, you know

  1469. what, my anger has

  1470. nothing to do with

  1471. eternity.

  1472. I was there humble.

  1473. Lord, forgive me for

  1474. that.

1475. We show that we know

  1476. he's present when we

  1477. don't grieve him with

  1478. disobedience and we

  1479. don't quench him by

  1480. refusing his counsel.

  1481. Secondly, being filled

  1482. with the Spirit means

  1483. consciously and

  1484. deliberately being

  1485. dependent upon his

  1486. enabling and his power.

  1487. I need him.

  1488. Look over at John

    John 15:5

  1489. chapter 15 verse 5.

1490. It says, I am the vine,

  1491. you are the branches,

  1492. whoever abides in me

1493. and I in him, he it is

  1494. that bears much fruit.

  1495. For apart from me,

  1496. what?

  1497. You can do nothing.

1498. I am not the most

  1499. profound mechanic.

1500. I'll be the first to

  1501. tell you that.

1502. But I have figured out

  1503. that cars need keys.

1504. In fact, apart from the

1505. key, the car is just a

  1506. stationary object.

  1507. Isn't that right?

1508. And one of the things

  1509. that shows my absolute

  1510. confidence in that

  1511. reality is generally

1512. when I get out of my

  1513. car, being the little

1514. lame brain that I am,

1515. I always check two or

1516. three times to see where

  1517. the keys are.

1518. How many of you do

  1519. that?

  1520. Okay.

  1521. There's a reason for

  1522. that.

  1523. You see, I have

1524. AAA and they think I

  1525. have them on speed

  1526. dial and that's not

  1527. true at all.

1528. By the way, we have

  1529. premier service.

  1530. There's a reason for

  1531. that too.

  1532. That's my wife.

  1533. I care about her.

  1534. But here's the deal.

1535. I know that keys and

  1536. cars are pretty important.

1537. And when I am filled with

1538. the Spirit, I am conscious

1539. and aware that apart from

1540. Him, I can do nothing.

1541. Try to live the Christian

1542. life apart from the power of

1543. the Spirit of God and it is

  1544. a recipe for frustration,

  1545. discouragement, and

  1546. fruitlessness.

1547. By Him and through Him, we

1548. have been called to be

  1549. lights in dark corners.

  1550. sinners.

1551. It's not our nature to be

1552. humble or thankful, but it's

1553. the work of the Spirit of God

1554. to make us that way, isn't

  1555. it?

1556. And so, all you have to do is

1557. listen to the broken world

1558. around you and realize that you

1559. can either choose to live that

1560. way or you can consciously

1561. choose to let the Spirit of God

  1562. enable you.

1563. Third, being filled with the

1564. Spirit means choosing to yield to

  1565. His scriptural promptings.

  1566. John chapter 16, verse 13 through

    John 16:13–14

  1567. 14.

  1568. John chapter 16, verse 13 through

    John 16:13–14

  1569. 14.

1570. When the Spirit of truth comes,

1571. He will guide you into all truth,

1572. for He will not speak on His own

1573. authority, but whatever He hears,

1574. He will speak, and He will

1575. declare to you the things that

  1576. are to come.

1577. He will glorify me, for He will

1578. take what is mine and declare it

  1579. to you.

1580. The Spirit works to bring back the

1581. Word of God to our thinking so

1582. that we may know what to do and

1583. what to think so that Christ is

  1584. honored.

1585. The Spirit of God is the search

1586. engine to help you handle the Word of

1587. God that you bury in your heart so

1588. that He can call it to mind at every

1589. moment when you need His help.

1590. Beloved, if I am repetitious in my

1591. desire for you to be a people that

1592. think the Scriptures, it is because

1593. the Spirit will use what's there.

1594. And if you don't have it packed away,

1595. He's not going to sprinkle it in

  1596. magically.

1597. Being led by the Spirit is choosing

1598. to walk in the path of His Word.

1599. Look at Galatians chapter 5 verse 16.

    Galatians 5:16

  1600. I love this text.

1601. Galatians chapter, by the way, there

1602. are a lot of passages I love just in

1603. case you're wondering, but Galatians

    Galatians 5 chapter mention

1604. chapter 5, this is one that you probably

  1605. should memorize.

  1606. Galatians chapter 5 verse 16 and 17.

    Galatians 5:16

1607. But I say, walk by the Spirit and you

1608. will not gratify the desires of the

  1609. flesh.

  1610. Leave it at that.

  1611. Galatians chapter 5 verse 16.

    Galatians 5:16

1612. Walk by the Spirit and you will not

  1613. gratify what?

1614. How many of you, in retrospect, find

  1615. yourself pretty disappointed, pretty

1616. discouraged, pretty turned off by the

1617. outcome of the desires of the flesh,

  1618. right?

1619. Every one of us say, yeah.

1620. So how do you deal with that?

  1621. Walk by the Spirit.

1622. And what does it mean to walk by the

  1623. Spirit?

1624. It means choosing to walk in the path of

1625. His Word and allowing what He has to

1626. say to make a difference in your life.

1627. So only come full circle.

1628. I'm going to make the assumption that

1629. the vast majority of you people here

1630. today know Christ as your personal

  1631. Savior.

1632. The God who has ordained your salvation

1633. and works so miraculously to deliver you

1634. from the pit intends for you to be a

1635. person who consciously and deliberately

1636. chooses to remember that He's present and

  1637. in you.

1638. A person who chooses to rely upon His power to

1639. do what you cannot do by your own and chooses

1640. to yield to His scriptural promptings and

1641. chooses to walk in the path of His Word.

1642. I am not one for a lot of emotional deciding.

1643. But I am one who believes that the purpose of

1644. preaching is to put people on the spot of saying

  1645. what?

1646. Yes or no to God.

1647. God says walk by the Spirit.

1648. And so what you have to ask yourself the question is

1649. does that characterize my life?

1650. And it wouldn't be a bad thing as you're driving

1651. home to turn to your husband and turn to your wife and

1652. say hey what do you think about how I'm doing it being

  1653. Spirit filled?

1654. And everybody smiles so we can come to the point

  1655. here.

1656. If you're a little uncomfortable with doing that then

1657. probably a wise thing to do would be right now to say

1658. alright Lord I hear what you have to say and I take you

1659. seriously and I will consciously and deliberately choose

1660. you being my helper to desire to do everything necessary to

1661. be filled with the Spirit.

  1662. Let's close in prayer.

  1663. Oh Lord.
