  1. Okay, by way of introduction, we are having some microphone questions.

  2. !

  3. Right here.

  4. And I need someone with two 16-penny nails.

  5. So you can pray that I don't have to have my feet nailed in one spot.

  6. That would be very difficult for me.

  7. I want you to open your Bibles, if you will, to Ephesians chapter 5.

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  8. And we are going to look at verse 22 through 24 this morning.

  9. Let me read the passage to you and you follow along in your own copy of the scriptures.

  10. Wives, submit to your own husbands as to the Lord.

  11. Don't take that to be divine addition.

  12. The text is important in itself without the additional help.

  13. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church, his body,

  14. and he is himself its savior.

  15. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.

  16. Let us pray.

  17. Father God, for us prayer is not a habit or something that we do because it's part of the plan of this day.

  18. It is the expression of our hearts that reflect our confidence in you, our glad dependence upon

  19. your sufficiency and your supremacy and our humble recognition that apart from you we can do nothing.

  20. And Father, this morning as we take the scriptures that you have given to us by divine revelation,

  21. and you have given us for our good and your glory.

  22. We confess that apart from the working of the Spirit of God, these texts and the lesson that you have for us is going to fall on deaf ears.

  23. I know, Lord, that there are some here in our fellowship this morning that do not know Christ.

  24. And there's not a one of us that this morning would not ask that you and your grace would draw that individual and those souls to you.

  25. It's reasonable to think that there are those who also this morning need to hear explicitly what your word has to say regarding this matter.

  26. And so we ask that you would give to us teachable hearts, desire for the glory of Christ, and confidence in the work of the Spirit of God.

  27. And we pray this because of Jesus.

  28. Amen.

  29. As we begin with this passage this morning, let me encourage you to know that one of the dangerous things to do with Scripture is to deal with it out of context.

  30. You always have to keep every piece of study within the larger frame of what the Scriptures teach.

  31. And so as we take up this passage in Ephesians chapter 5, verse 22 through 24,

    Ephesians 5:22–24

  32. I want to remind you that actually this is all part of a larger lesson that the apostle has given beginning in Ephesians chapter 1 all the way through to where we are now,

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  33. in which first of all, he explains to believers the book of Ephesians was written primarily to people who knew Christ.

  34. Most everybody in the church at Ephesus had come to faith by being drawn by the grace of God to realize the darkness of their own soul and the hardness of their spirit.

  35. And they came by faith and cried out and said,

  36. I'm a sinner who stands justly condemned before Christ, and I need him to be my Savior.

  37. Ephesians takes three chapters to explain that salvation is the work of God in which he changes a man's heart and a woman's heart and brings them into sweet relationship and communion with the Lord of glory.

  38. Following that, Paul takes the remaining three chapters to explain how the church, which is the bride of Christ, the body of Christ, is to relate.

  39. And the passage that we are looking at here, actually, in Galatians chapter 5, verse 22,

    Galatians 5:22

  40. is really an explanation of what we've seen earlier in which the apostle says to all of the members of the congregation

  41. that this book was written to, you as God's people are to be, what?

  42. Filled with the Spirit.

  43. Filled with the Spirit.

  44. And following that, the first piece of counsel that he gives regarding that has to do with the way in which we interact with one another,

  45. speaking Scripture to one another, the attitude we have in our music and worship,

  46. and then also the matter of being thankful in all things.

  47. Following that, he makes one last statement in verse 21,

  48. that we are to be a people who are submissive to one another,

  49. and in particular because of our fear and our regard and our respect for Christ.

  50. Now, I do want to explain this morning as we look at this passage

  51. that one of the first things we need to do is really see the big picture.

  52. So I want you to have it in mind.

  53. First, the Holy Spirit's greater interest in this passage is not principally that Christians will have great marriages.

  54. Now, that may strike you a little odd

  55. because I want you to understand that God does care about Christians having great marriages.

  56. But his greater concern is the glory of Christ,

  57. and we need to have that fixed in our minds.

  58. The gospel and the glory of Christ is at the center of everything that we are to be

  59. and what his instruction is to us.

  60. The explicit, on-point instructions that we are going to see this morning

  61. that apply to wives is only a part of the larger interest that the apostle has

  62. in believers' living, spirit-filled lives.

  63. And in living that spirit-filled life, his intention is that we model the wisdom and the goodness of God,

  64. that people looking at the way in which our lives are constructed and play out

  65. will say, wow, where did they get that idea?

  66. That is novel, and it seems to actually work.

  67. Second, I do want you to understand that Paul actually is going to give us three lessons

  68. following verse 21.

  69. Remember what verse 21 says?

  70. It says, submit to one another.

  71. Then he is going to use three different pictures of what that relationship of submission looks like.

  72. One is in marriage.

  73. Two is in parenting.

  74. Three is in employment.

  75. And in every case, along with the lesson that he gives on the matter of submission,

  76. he is also going to give a lesson on the responsibility of the one who is in the position of authority

  77. in that particular arena or venue.

  78. He is going to address the order of submission in the home, in marriage, and at work.

  79. Now, third, when I say to you and when you heard the passage read, I think it would be fair to say

  80. that for some this morning, hearing that statement, wives, submit to your own husbands,

  81. you may kind of smile on the outside, but the heart, the natural response to any issue of submission

  82. is, guess what?

  83. It's a little bit like nails on the chalkboard.

  84. Do you follow that?

  85. I'll never forget as a pastor, one of the things that happens is a couple says to me,

  86. well, we'd like to get married, and they come in for premarital counseling.

  87. And I usually have the young man and the young woman in my office.

  88. And more than one occasion, I've gotten to this part of the process of premarital counseling.

  89. And I ask the little girl who grew up in our church, do you think you're going to have any problems with submission?

  90. And she twitters and giggles and says, oh, not at all.

  91. And I think, wow, really encouraged to hear that.

  92. I do want you to understand that the issue of submission is not something that is a struggle just today.

  93. And it is a struggle.

  94. I want you to turn back in your Bibles just for a moment to a passage in Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  95. And I want you to understand that with the fall came the struggle that we see today.

  96. Genesis chapter 3, verse 16, God comes to Adam and Eve following the entrance of sin into the garden.

    Genesis 3:16

  97. And here's what He says in verse 16.

  98. He says, I will surely multiply your pain and childbearing.

  99. Is there any mother here that doesn't think God spoke authoritatively in that passage?

  100. Huh?

  101. No.

  102. I have been the happy witness to my children's births.

  103. And I can tell you, my wife's a trooper.

  104. But I can also tell you, in the good old days, you didn't have private birthing rooms that had a lot of sound protection.

  105. And I will never forget Judith and I having one of four stalls in this birthing place.

  106. And the woman across the hall had a vocabulary of a drunken sailor.

  107. And when she could draw breath, all that she could draw was spent on doing two things.

  108. One of the things that had a lot of time was spent on doing two things.

  109. And the woman was just like, oh, my God said, here's some of the consequences of sin.

  110. And we find there in verse 16, in pain you shall bring forth children.

  111. But mark the next part, it says, your desire shall be for your husband and he shall rule over you.

  112. It's not saying, hey girl, you're really going to have the hots for your husband.

  113. Thank you.

  114. It's explaining that the desire and the heart is going to resist the headship and leadership that God has ordained.

  115. And the husband is going to be inclined to be a little bit of a whiner or a tyrant.

  116. How's that?

  117. So I want you to have it in mind that when Paul wrote this statement, and you can go back to Ephesians chapter 5,

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  118. he was addressing a problem that his desire was bent towards helping the body of Christ,

  119. and people in particular, honor and adore the Lord Jesus Christ in their marriages.

  120. As a note of history, and I think it is important for us to keep the context in mind,

  121. if you're a student of history at all, you will know that in the ancient world,

  122. whether you were in Jewish culture or you were in Roman culture or you were in Greek culture,

  123. women as a general rule were not highly prized or valued.

  124. I'm not going to get into all the details of what that was like,

  125. but I want you to understand that for the larger part, women were kind of viewed as a...

  126. I want to be careful how I say that, but they weren't viewed with respect.

  127. And the gospel brought deliverance.

  128. Do you follow that?

  129. If you think with me just for a moment over in Galatians chapter 3, and I want you to turn back just a little bit so you can see this.

    Galatians 3 chapter mention

  130. In Galatians chapter 3, verse 28, we get a picture of how the gospel delivered

    Galatians 3:28

  131. believers from the cloud and the pall that set over top of the unbelieving world.

  132. Verse 28, there is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

  133. Now, is that Bible truth?

  134. Truth?

  135. Yes, it is.

  136. And I would suspect that as this liberty and freedom that we find in salvation began to work its way into the culture of the church,

  137. which reminds us that in God's eyes we are all equal, and we are,

  138. that brutal suppression that had characterized the culture led to the pendulum began to swing a little bit.

  139. And I would suspicion that the Spirit of God sensed we need to clarify something.

  140. How many of you understand that the Bill of Rights declares that we are all as citizens what?

  141. Equal.

  142. But the fact that we are equal as citizens does not change the need for order and structure.

  143. Would you recognize that?

  144. There are a number of young men in our fellowship that have decided that they want to pursue the military.

  145. And when you go into the military, in one sense you are all equal,

  146. but do you understand that being equal before our Constitution and the Bill of Rights does not mean that you don't respect those who are an authority over you?

  147. It would seem that as the gospel began to transform that ancient culture,

  148. it became evident that believers still need to be reminded of the fact that God who created all things

  149. and was the one who designed order to be what it is,

  150. he saw the need and we recognize that there is still a need.

  151. And we need to have attention to that.

  152. So, I want you to recognize this morning as you look at this passage in Ephesians chapter 5,

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  153. that the Bible begins by telling us, it says here,

  154. wives submit to your own husband as to the Lord.

  155. And God's plan for order and for what is wise and good,

  156. it still remains even though it is countercultural.

  157. So, let's take up verse 22 in particular and kind of break it down and begin to pay attention to what the passage says.

  158. I want you to understand that without question the Bible makes it clear that spirit-filled submission is for the wife.

  159. The believing wife who values the Word of God,

  160. and I want to say that carefully,

  161. the believing wife who values the Word of God and seeks to be spirit-filled is subject to her husband.

  162. That's what the Bible says.

  163. To put it another way,

  164. the Christian wife is under her husband's headship and authority.

  165. That means she is to follow his lead,

  166. to submit to his counsel and direction,

  167. and respect the office and role that her husband has received from God.

  168. Now, I want you to understand that God has assigned specific roles to each member of society

  169. and each member in a marriage in particular.

  170. He has appointed the husband to lead

  171. and the husband to provide.

  172. I want you to turn back again.

  173. You were in Genesis,

  174. but I want you to go back, if you would, to Genesis chapter 2,

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  175. and we are going to discover there several different passages

  176. in relationship to a husband's responsibility to be the leader in his home.

  177. Genesis chapter 2,

    Genesis 2:7–18

  178. verse 7 through 18.

  179. Then the Lord formed the man of dust from the ground

  180. and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life.

  181. Man became a living creature.

  182. The Lord planted a garden.

  183. And we find there in the matter of the garden

  184. that God gives explicit instructions to man

  185. regarding what he was to do in the garden.

  186. I want you to also notice in Genesis chapter 3,

    Genesis 3:1–9

  187. verse 1 through 9,

  188. that after sin came into the garden,

  189. that God was not going to deal,

  190. first of all,

  191. with the first perpetrator of the sin,

  192. but to the one who was responsible with headship.

  193. The fact of the matter is,

  194. is that Eve was the one who was first tempted.

  195. She fell.

  196. Her husband followed her.

  197. But when God came into the picture,

  198. his question of what has happened in this situation

  199. was not directed to the woman,

  200. but was directed to the man.

  201. The proof of God's plan in a home,

  202. as seen in the passages that we are looking at

  203. here in Genesis 2 and Genesis chapter 3,

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  204. makes several points.

  205. Number one, that God created man first,

  206. and in doing so,

  207. he did so to establish order.

  208. He wanted to make clear what that plan was,

  209. and he did that for us so we don't forget.

  210. For another, we find there in the passage,

  211. in the Genesis chapter 2 passage,

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  212. that he gave explicit instructions to man,

  213. and he expected the man to pass those on.

  214. Many of you work in environments

  215. where those who are in a leadership and authority over you,

  216. they're the ones who are given the instructions

  217. from those who are above them,

  218. and they are responsible to see

  219. that you know what the instructions are

  220. and that you follow them.

  221. And as we recognize,

  222. and we've already noted,

  223. after sin entered the picture,

  224. we find that God came to man

  225. and held man responsible.

  226. And I want you to look again,

  227. if you would,

  228. at Genesis chapter 3,

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  229. and mark what it says there in verse 9.

  230. Do you know what he's trying to do?

  231. Trying to pass the buck.

  232. Trying to shuffle off his responsibility.

  233. So as we look at this passage,

  234. I want you to understand that God has ordained,

  235. and I want to make this clear,

  236. and we're going to come back to that again,

  237. but I want to make it clear

  238. that God has ordained

  239. that the husband is to be the leader in his home.

  240. That is his office and his responsibility.

  241. And it is his duty to develop the skill

  242. to do so in a biblical and honoring fashion.

  243. I'll never forget the commissioning service

  244. that my son was at,

  245. and I had the privilege of attending,

  246. and there he stands

  247. as a newly minted second lieutenant,

  248. green behind the ears.

  249. All the experience that he had

  250. was getting through officer's training school.

  251. And the one who is there

  252. to recognize his transition

  253. from being an enlisted man

  254. to an officer

  255. is a veteran of the chase.

  256. And the man who is commissioned

  257. makes a very interesting statement.

  258. He says,

  259. follow me.

  260. And the commissioned,

  261. the man who is,

  262. what's the word here?

  263. You have an officer

  264. and you have an enlisted man.

  265. And the enlisted man says,

  266. lead the way.

  267. By appointment,

  268. in the military,

  269. a man is placed in office

  270. and he's expected to lead.

  271. And by appointment,

  272. God has set the man

  273. to be the leader in his home,

  274. and it is God's expectation

  275. that he do that properly.

  276. Well, what this passage teaches,

  277. and I want us to go back

  278. to Ephesians chapter 5

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  279. and mark what it says,

  280. there in verse 22 and 23,

  281. what it teaches

  282. is that a wife,

  283. a Christian wife,

  284. and I want to make that clear,

  285. a Christian wife

  286. is not to assert authority

  287. over her husband.

  288. I want you to go to a passage

  289. that will help us

  290. with this a little bit,

  291. and you are there

  292. in Ephesians.

  293. Go forward

  294. to the back of the Bible,

  295. to the right.

  296. Go to 1 Timothy chapter 2,

    1 Timothy 2:12

  297. verse 12.

  298. In 1 Timothy chapter 2,

    1 Timothy 2:12

  299. verse 12,

  300. we find that Paul

  301. writes to the church

  302. and he gives instruction

  303. here as well.

  304. And there in the passage,

  305. he says,

  306. I do not permit a woman

  307. to teach or to exercise

  308. authority over a man,

  309. rather she is to remain quiet.

  310. For Adam was formed first,

  311. then Eve.

  312. The order,

  313. the Spirit of God,

  314. God makes clear

  315. is an indicator

  316. of headship.

  317. Secondly,

  318. I want you to understand

  319. that the Christian wife

  320. is to follow

  321. her husband's lead

  322. and decisions.

  323. And going back

  324. to Ephesians chapter 5,

    Ephesians 5:24

  325. verse 24,

  326. I want you to understand

  327. that her leadership

  328. and her submission

  329. is to be extensive.

  330. Look at the passage.

  331. Now,

  332. as the church

  333. submits to Christ,

  334. so also the wife

  335. should submit

  336. in everything

  337. to her husband.

  338. The Bible instructs

  339. the Spirit-filled wife.

  340. Can I stop

  341. just for a moment?

  342. I want you to understand

  343. that apart from

  344. the enabling

  345. of the Spirit of God,

  346. submission is not natural

  347. or normal

  348. to any woman.

  349. And by the way,

  350. so that we don't think

  351. this is a gender issue,

  352. I want you to understand

  353. that submission

  354. is not normal

  355. to any of us.

  356. It is something

  357. that happens

  358. under the enabling

  359. of the Spirit of God,

  360. and we need to remember that

  361. because as we work

  362. our way through this passage,

  363. if you're sitting here

  364. as a woman and saying,

  365. I don't want to do that,

  366. and the guy I'm married to

  367. I'm not sure about,

  368. I want to tell you,

  369. your problem is not with him.

  370. Your problem is with

  371. allowing the Spirit of God

  372. to work in your heart

  373. and life

  374. and allowing God

  375. to be the one who leads.

  376. Come back to the point

  377. that this submission

  378. is to be extensive.

  379. I want you to understand

  380. that the Bible instructs

  381. the Spirit-filled wife

  382. to submit to her husband's lead

  383. in all things

  384. except where he instructs her

  385. to be clearly disobedient

  386. to the written Word of God.

  387. Over the years,

  388. I've had wives call me up

  389. and say,

  390. hey, my husband wants me

  391. to sign the tax form

  392. and I know that it's false.

  393. I've had wives call me up

  394. and say,

  395. my husband has prohibited me

  396. from going to church.

  397. I've had wives call me up

  398. and say,

  399. my husband has prohibited me

  400. from being baptized.

  401. My explicit counsel

  402. in such case is,

  403. listen,

  404. you are to respectfully

  405. let your husband know

  406. that you are also

  407. under someone else's authority

  408. and that is the Word of God.

  409. And humbly show him

  410. what the Word of God

  411. has to say in these regards.

  412. Can a husband

  413. command his wife

  414. to sin against God?

  415. The answer is,

  416. no.

  417. But if he doesn't want

  418. to eat liver

  419. and Brussels sprouts

  420. and he says,

  421. don't ever fix that

  422. for me again,

  423. don't.

  424. You got it?

  425. Pretty clear.

  426. And I happen to like

  427. liver and Brussels sprouts

  428. in case you're wondering.

  429. I did that at home.

  430. No.

  431. In our home,

  432. I want you to understand

  433. there's kind of a plan

  434. that if God produced it

  435. and my wife cooked it

  436. and we prayed for it,

  437. it's going home.

  438. Okay?

  439. You got that?

  440. And we have,

  441. of course our children

  442. are all grown now

  443. and under their own

  444. authority and rules,

  445. but we had a plan

  446. that things that weren't

  447. eaten for supper

  448. were for breakfast.

  449. And things that weren't

  450. eaten for supper

  451. and for breakfast

  452. were for lunch.

  453. You know,

  454. eventually,

  455. the refrigerator

  456. was an amazing thing

  457. and eventually,

  458. there's a saying,

  459. Shakespeare said,

  460. hunger makes the best

  461. sauce.

  462. Okay,

  463. back we go.

  464. A wife's humility

  465. and submission

  466. to her husband

  467. is to be extensive.

  468. Let me come to another

  469. point that I think

  470. is important.

  471. I want you to recognize

  472. that the Bible says

  473. that her husband

  474. is the head.

  475. I want you to recognize

  476. that the Bible says

  477. that the husband

  478. is the head.

  479. Put your finger,

  480. if you will,

  481. on verse 23.

  482. The husband is

  483. the head of the wife.

  484. Not might be,

  485. not should be,

  486. not let's have a vote,

  487. it says is.

  488. The husband may be

  489. a poor head.

  490. There may be

  491. some pieces missing

  492. in terms of his logic

  493. and structure,

  494. but at the end of the day,

  495. if God arrives

  496. on the scene

  497. and asks a question

  498. about what's going on

  499. at that address,

  500. he's not going to talk

  501. to the wife,

  502. he's going to talk

  503. to the husband.

  504. Whether the wife

  505. recognizes it or not,

  506. God himself

  507. has appointed the husband

  508. to be the head

  509. in that home

  510. and he is.

  511. By the way,

  512. if the wife

  513. doesn't like the head,

  514. she probably should have

  515. thought about that

  516. before she said,

  517. I do.

  518. Don't be saying,

  519. yes, I'll follow,

  520. I do,

  521. and then do it,

  522. then not do it.

  523. Again,

  524. come back to the issue

  525. of premarital counseling.

  526. I can tell you

  527. on more than one occasion,

  528. and I've had the privilege

  529. of, for the most part,

  530. doing marriages

  531. of young people

  532. that have grown up

  533. in our fellowship.

  534. But there have been

  535. those rare occasions

  536. where individuals

  537. have come to me

  538. and said,

  539. would you do our wedding?

  540. Wonderful opportunity

  541. of evangelism.

  542. I've done two

  543. non-believing people

  544. and I did the civil service.

  545. But I said,

  546. if you want me

  547. to marry you,

  548. yeah, we want you

  549. to marry us.

  550. I said,

  551. try that again.

  552. We want you to marry us.

  553. I said,

  554. you have to go

  555. through counseling

  556. with me.

  557. Oh yeah,

  558. not a problem.

  559. It's good,

  560. blah, blah, blah.

  561. And so there we go

  562. and we get over

  563. to this part

  564. and it's like,

  565. whoa,

  566. what is that?

  567. I'm not following him.

  568. I said,

  569. find somebody else

  570. to do the wedding.

  571. You know,

  572. you're going to stand up

  573. there and say,

  574. I do.

  575. What are you saying

  576. I do too?

  577. I do.

  578. So let me give you

  579. some practical counsel

  580. for godly,

  581. spirit-filled wives.

  582. This verse,

  583. and by extension

  584. these verses

  585. suggest that,

  586. number one,

  587. a Christian wife

  588. will support her husband

  589. as he learns to lead.

  590. Let me say that slowly

  591. so you don't miss it.

  592. A Christian wife

  593. will support her husband

  594. as he learns to lead.

  595. In most cases,

  596. I think it was last Sunday

  597. as I was teaching Sunday school

  598. in our class

  599. called Home Improvements,

  600. I asked,

  601. how many of you

  602. in this class

  603. grew up in Christian homes?

  604. Probably 80%

  605. of my class

  606. grew up in Christian homes.

  607. That's good.

  608. I said,

  609. how many of you

  610. young men

  611. or how many of you

  612. who are husbands

  613. had specific training

  614. in what it was

  615. to be the leader

  616. of your home?

  617. No one raised their hand

  618. and say,

  619. oh, yeah,

  620. I had that class.

  621. My father taught me

  622. the responsibility

  623. of being the spiritual leader

  624. of his home.

  625. I want you to understand

  626. that in most cases,

  627. and I trust it does not

  628. stay this way,

  629. most cases,

  630. young men are not

  631. explicitly instructed

  632. in what the responsibility

  633. and obligations are

  634. of being the spiritual leader

  635. of their home.

  636. And so, wives,

  637. godly women,

  638. you have to learn

  639. how to support your husband

  640. as he learns how to lead.

  641. And learning how to lead

  642. is a challenge.

  643. Furthermore,

  644. secondly,

  645. the Christian wife

  646. should pray

  647. for her husband

  648. as he grows in this area.

  649. Something you learn

  650. in leadership

  651. is that

  652. you learn by

  653. trial and error,

  654. you learn by consulting

  655. those who are wise,

  656. you learn upon,

  657. you learn how to rely

  658. upon the word of God,

  659. and guess who suffers

  660. as the young man

  661. is going through

  662. the learning curve.

  663. Does anybody have an idea?

  664. It's the other person

  665. in the canoe.

  666. Poor girl.

  667. She decided,

  668. yes, I'm going to follow,

  669. yes, I'm going to be

  670. his wife,

  671. and the poor guy,

  672. without extensive instructions

  673. in what to do

  674. as he leads,

  675. he's bumbling around

  676. and causing accidents,

  677. and she is saying,

  678. I don't like

  679. all this consequence.

  680. Here's what usually happens.

  681. they leave this place

  682. where they've said,

  683. I do,

  684. and smiles and giggles

  685. and stuff,

  686. and they walk out

  687. and begin life,

  688. and that rookie

  689. novice husband

  690. decides he's going

  691. to try out

  692. a couple decisions,

  693. and he makes

  694. a couple boneheaded ones,

  695. and she begins

  696. to say,

  697. that was dumb,

  698. that was dumb,

  699. that was dumb,

  700. and pretty soon

  701. he says,

  702. well, you take over,

  703. and guess what happens

  704. when she begins

  705. to take over?

  706. Two things.

  707. She diminishes

  708. her value

  709. and respect

  710. for him.

  711. Can't help it.

  712. And number two,

  713. he begins

  714. to think less

  715. of her as well.

  716. So when you have

  717. a couple accidents

  718. and you tip

  719. that canoe over,

  720. and he says,

  721. why don't you try it

  722. for a while,

  723. godly,

  724. young girl,

  725. wife,

  726. you say,

  727. not on your life.

  728. I want you

  729. to understand

  730. in relationship

  731. to this,

  732. the Christian wife

  733. must trust

  734. the Holy Spirit

  735. to be more instructive

  736. and persuasive

  737. than she is.

  738. Now,

  739. what do I mean

  740. by that?

  741. Let me explain

  742. something to you

  743. so you get this,

  744. and I've got to

  745. watch my time here,

  746. take my watch off,

  747. so that's a real signal

  748. I'm going to do that.

  749. Truth of the matter

  750. is,

  751. is that little girls

  752. learn a whole lot

  753. more about playing

  754. house than boys do.

  755. Do you follow that?

  756. I mean,

  757. I'm around my grandkids,

  758. and just from

  759. this time they're little,

  760. they get dolls.

  761. Girls get dolls.

  762. Do you know

  763. what boys get?

  764. In fact,

  765. they get guns

  766. and swords,

  767. and my grandchildren,

  768. my grandsons

  769. can turn anything

  770. into a sword.

  771. I mean,

  772. almost anything.

  773. Do you follow that?

  774. My little grandson

  775. had tinker toys

  776. crammed down

  777. into his pants.

  778. I mean,

  779. you know,

  780. tinker toys,

  781. you know how you

  782. join them together?

  783. And,

  784. you know,

  785. tinker toy is a really

  786. floppy sword,

  787. but he pulled that out

  788. and said,

  789. see my sword?

  790. I mean,

  791. boys have swords.

  792. Girls have what?

  793. Dolls.

  794. And they are learning

  795. because they're being

  796. coached by mommy.

  797. Hey,

  798. you don't just drop

  799. that thing on the head.

  800. Now,

  801. why do you say that

  802. to the girl?

  803. Huh?

  804. You know,

  805. there's some consequences

  806. to dropping a baby

  807. on their head,

  808. you know?

  809. Now,

  810. sticking each other

  811. with a sword,

  812. now those are details

  813. you've got to work on,

  814. but girls are being

  815. coached about being

  816. mommies

  817. and nurturing

  818. and caring,

  819. and they learn

  820. a lot of things

  821. about what makes

  822. life happen

  823. that boys who are

  824. playing with swords

  825. and guns

  826. and trying to hurt

  827. each other,

  828. you know,

  829. they're not learning.

  830. And so,

  831. that well-trained

  832. little girl

  833. marries that rookie

  834. boy who has

  835. no idea

  836. what leadership

  837. really requires.

  838. And they climb

  839. on the tandem bicycle,

  840. she says,

  841. honey,

  842. you're supposed

  843. to be in front,

  844. and he says,

  845. I'll do that.

  846. And so,

  847. they get on the tandem

  848. by,

  849. they go down the road

  850. and have a couple wrecks

  851. and guess what she says?

  852. She lets him know

  853. that wrecks are not fun.

  854. And he says,

  855. well,

  856. you drive.

  857. And from then on in,

  858. she's up front

  859. catching bugs

  860. and complaining about it

  861. and he's behind

  862. wondering about

  863. who's doing the driving

  864. and it gets messier

  865. and messier.

  866. I want you to understand

  867. that a godly wife

  868. will rely upon

  869. the Holy Spirit

  870. to be more instructive

  871. and more persuasive

  872. than she ever will be.

  873. And by the way,

  874. a Christian wife

  875. cannot play

  876. the I told you so card.

  877. One of the ways

  878. men learn to lead

  879. is by making dumb mistakes.

  880. How many men here

  881. would agree?

  882. You learn the hard way.

  883. And the wisest thing

  884. for a godly wife to do

  885. is just kind of smile

  886. and let him learn.

  887. Can I tell you women

  888. that the Holy Spirit

  889. is more persuasive

  890. and more painful

  891. than you will ever be?

  892. I'll never forget

  893. an experience I had

  894. several years ago

  895. of driving on 270.

  896. I saw this Land Rover

  897. mega SUV

  898. blow my doors off.

  899. You know,

  900. got my attention.

  901. And on the back

  902. it had a large bumper sticker.

  903. And bumper stickers

  904. are how you advertise

  905. your view of life.

  906. Isn't that right?

  907. And here's this bumper sticker.

  908. It said,

  909. all men are idiots

  910. and I married their king.

  911. I thought to myself,

  912. whoa.

  913. I bet you

  914. the woman driving

  915. that SUV

  916. is a sight to behold.

  917. You know,

  918. something kind of

  919. in the Amazon culture.

  920. You know,

  921. 6'5",

  922. you know,

  923. forearm resting on the...

  924. So,

  925. I did speed up.

  926. I do want you to admit.

  927. I pulled kind of,

  928. you know,

  929. it was a little

  930. furtive glance,

  931. you know.

  932. It was this little

  933. Walter Mitty type of guy.

  934. You know what

  935. Walter Mitty is for you?

  936. You know,

  937. a wuss.

  938. I mean,

  939. I looked at it,

  940. I thought,

  941. heaven,

  942. help me.

  943. Bud,

  944. you need to get that off.

  945. You know,

  946. here,

  947. given the command

  948. that we have,

  949. it would be wise

  950. for godly parents

  951. to help their sons

  952. learn how to be

  953. godly leaders.

  954. Would you agree

  955. with that?

  956. It's important.

  957. And also,

  958. can I tell you

  959. that you

  960. who are parents

  961. would be wise

  962. to teach your daughters

  963. how to make good picks.

  964. You know,

  965. he may be

  966. Joe Sixpack

  967. in the gym,

  968. but if the word

  969. of God

  970. does not govern

  971. his life,

  972. he is going to be

  973. a leader

  974. that is a terrifying

  975. fact in your life.

  976. Let's come to

  977. one more piece.

  978. Going back

  979. to the passage

  980. in Ephesians

    Ephesians 5:22

  981. chapter 5,

  982. verse 22,

  983. it says,

  984. Wives,

  985. submit

  986. to your own

  987. husbands

  988. as

  989. to

  990. the Lord.

  991. I want you

  992. to go back

  993. with me

  994. just for a moment

  995. to Ephesians

    Ephesians 5:21

  996. chapter 5,

  997. verse 21,

  998. where it says,

  999. Submitting to one

  1000. another out of

  1001. fear for Christ.

  1002. A godly wife

  1003. submits

  1004. because of her

  1005. relationship with

  1006. Christ.

  1007. And let me say

  1008. that carefully.

  1009. A godly wife

  1010. submits because

  1011. of her relationship

  1012. with Christ

  1013. and her desire

  1014. to please Him

  1015. as her Lord

  1016. and Savior.

  1017. And where there

  1018. is a lack

  1019. of willingness

  1020. to submit,

  1021. the problem

  1022. is not principally

  1023. with the husband

  1024. that God

  1025. has given her.

  1026. Her first problem

  1027. is with the

  1028. headship of

  1029. Christ Himself.

  1030. Her unwillingness

  1031. to hear

  1032. the authority

  1033. of her Savior

  1034. only plays out

  1035. in the home,

  1036. in the place

  1037. where she lives.

1038. I want to tell you

  1039. it's quite easy

  1040. to profess a love

  1041. for Christ

  1042. and a faith

  1043. in Christ,

  1044. but the real proof

  1045. is not in

  1046. what we say,

  1047. but how we live

  1048. in the settings

  1049. where He places us.

  1050. A godly child

  1051. obeys,

  1052. as we see

  1053. in this passage

  1054. later in Ephesians

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  1055. chapter 6,

  1056. because of Christ.

  1057. A godly employee

  1058. works hard

  1059. because of Christ.

  1060. And by extension,

  1061. a godly wife

  1062. submits

  1063. because of Christ.

  1064. So let me close

  1065. with this wonderful

  1066. little picture

  1067. that Jesus gave us.

1068. I want you to turn

  1069. back in your Bibles,

  1070. if you will,

  1071. to Matthew chapter 25.

    Matthew 25 chapter mention

  1072. Matthew chapter 25.

    Matthew 25 chapter mention

  1073. And we're going

  1074. to be looking

  1075. at a little

  1076. setting

  1077. that Jesus gives us

  1078. that's a little surprising.

  1079. Let me pick up

  1080. and read

  1081. beginning there

  1082. in verse 31.

  1083. Matthew chapter 25

    Matthew 25:31

  1084. verse 31.

1085. When the Son of Man

  1086. comes in His glory

  1087. and all the angels

  1088. with Him,

  1089. and He will sit

  1090. on His glorious throne

  1091. before Him,

  1092. will be gathered

  1093. all the nations

  1094. and He will separate

  1095. people one from another

  1096. as a shepherd

  1097. separates the sheep

  1098. from the goats.

  1099. You know this passage,

  1100. don't you?

1101. One group goes one side,

  1102. the other group

  1103. goes the other side.

1104. And there in verse 34

  1105. it says,

1106. And the King will say

1107. to those on the right,

  1108. Come you who are

  1109. blessed by my Father.

  1110. Inherit the kingdom

  1111. prepared for you

  1112. from the foundation

  1113. of the world.

  1114. For I was hungry

1115. and you gave me food

  1116. and I was thirsty

1117. and you gave me drink.

  1118. I was a stranger

1119. and you welcomed me in.

  1120. I was naked

  1121. and you clothed me.

  1122. I was sick

  1123. and you visited me.

  1124. I was in prison

1125. and you came to me.

  1126. The righteous will answer

  1127. and saying,

  1128. Lord,

1129. when did we see you hungry

  1130. and feed you

  1131. or thirsty

  1132. and give you drink?

1133. When did all these things happen?

  1134. You know what Jesus

  1135. is going to say

  1136. to the godly wife?

  1137. He'll say,

  1138. Hey,

  1139. you served me,

  1140. you fed me,

  1141. you cared for me,

  1142. you honored me,

  1143. when you followed

  1144. your husband's leadership.

  1145. Look at the passage.

  1146. Jesus says,

  1147. What?

  1148. If you did it

1149. to the least of these,

  1150. you did it,

  1151. what?

  1152. To me.

  1153. And he says,

1154. If you refuse to do it,

1155. you refuse to do it

  1156. to me.

  1157. Verse 40,

1158. Truly I say to you,

  1159. as you did it

  1160. to the one

  1161. of the least

  1162. of these my brothers,

1163. you did it to me.

  1164. So here's the truth.

  1165. The godly wife,

  1166. the spirit-filled wife,

1167. who submits to her husband,

1168. lifts up the name of Jesus.

1169. Listen to me as I close.

  1170. Do you realize that

1171. God puts all kinds of

  1172. couples together,

  1173. and in most cases,

  1174. A,

  1175. the young man

  1176. was not born,

  1177. well,

  1178. always not born,

  1179. but in most cases,

  1180. he didn't learn

  1181. how to lead.

1182. The girls had an advantage

  1183. in many ways.

  1184. But the godly,

  1185. spirit-filled wife

  1186. says,

  1187. You know what?

  1188. I want my husband

  1189. to develop leadership,

  1190. and I will invest

  1191. my energy

  1192. in helping him learn

  1193. how to do it

  1194. wisely.

  1195. Judith and I,

1196. this is the whole truth,

1197. I'll tell you the truth.

  1198. When I was dating

  1199. with the intelligent intention

  1200. of finally marrying somebody,

1201. I knew what kind of girl

  1202. I needed.

  1203. Do you follow that?

  1204. I knew, actually,

  1205. I needed someone

1206. that was smarter than I was.

  1207. And I married

  1208. a very wonderful,

  1209. intelligent,

  1210. capable,

  1211. organized,

  1212. outstanding young lady.

  1213. I, by nature,

  1214. came into that marriage

  1215. as a tyrant

  1216. and a coward.

  1217. And our home

  1218. suffered significantly

  1219. under my lack

  1220. of biblical leadership.

  1221. friendship.

  1222. And when the doors

1223. blew off of our home,

1224. God came and talked to me

  1225. and said,

  1226. Tim,

  1227. this is your problem.

1228. And he fixed it eventually.

1229. And one of the first things

  1230. I said

  1231. after we got reconciled,

  1232. I said,

  1233. never let me

  1234. abrogate

  1235. or give away

  1236. my responsibility

  1237. of leading again.

1238. And I want to tell you,

1239. thank you for the Lord

  1240. that my wife

  1241. has been smart enough

  1242. that when there's

  1243. a scary sound

  1244. in the house,

  1245. she sends me

  1246. to check on it.

  1247. That's the way it,

  1248. what,

  1249. should be.

  1250. Let's close in prayer.
