  1. Let us begin with prayer.

  2. Our Father God, this morning as we open Your Word, I am reminded of the passage in John

  3. 15 where it says, apart from me you can do nothing.

  4. And I would be sorely mistaken to think that preaching is an exercise merely of the intellect

  5. because, Father, it is something that is profoundly dependent upon the work of the Spirit of God.

  6. And to think that Your people, of their own will and volition, can glean from the words of a frail individual

  7. things that are of eternal value merely by their own thoughts is foolish.

  8. And so, Father, we join the psalmist in praying,

  9. Open Thou mine eyes that I might behold wondrous truths out of Thy law.

  10. And we understand this morning as we take up the subject of our stewardship, our giving,

  11. that for some of us here, this is a joyful practice of many years of application.

  12. For others, it's an ongoing battle and struggle.

  13. And for still others, it is an area of irritation and resistance.

  14. And so, Lord, this morning our prayer is that Your Word would have free course and that it would bear fruit.

  15. And we ask this because of Jesus and with confidence in the power of the Spirit of God.

  16. Amen.

  17. I would ask that you turn in your Bibles this morning to 1 Corinthians chapter 16,

    1 Corinthians 16 chapter mention

  18. and I will tell you in advance that we will not stay there very long.

  19. Let me read the passage to you.

  20. The apostle writes this in 1 Corinthians 16.

  21. He says,

  22. Now concerning the collection for the saints as I directed the churches in Galatia,

  23. so also you are to do.

  24. On the first day of every week, each of you is to put something aside

  25. and store it up as he may prosper so that there will be no collecting when I come.

  26. I bring this to your attention because it's a passage that reminds us that the matter of stewardship

  27. was something that had traction and had a place in apostolic teaching,

  28. and it was part of what the early church addressed at one point or another.

  29. In fact, it was a fairly regular part.

  30. If you actually were to take and work your way through the Scriptures,

  31. you would be amazed at how often it appears.

  32. Now having said that, I do want you to know that it does not appear in the New Testament

  33. quite as often as it appears in contemporary televangelical, you know, televangelist speaking.

  34. You've heard me on occasion talk about the perverse part of my heart

  35. that every now and then we'll just kind of skip through

  36. and listen to a number of different individuals.

  37. And it's amazing, it's amazing, it's amazing.

  38. I was listening to Jake's the other day.

  39. Now I'll tell you, he's got fire.

  40. I like it.

  41. Very passionate, very enthusiastic.

  42. And I was listening to T.D. Jake's talk about,

  43. no matter where the sermon starts,

  44. guess where it always ends up?

  45. Somewhere close to seed faith.

  46. And seed faith is one of those,

  47. you can count on it being somewhere in the sermon,

  48. no matter who you're listening to.

  49. And if you are watching on TV,

  50. somewhere along the line when seed faith kind of comes up,

  51. there's an amazing,

  52. I don't know how they do it technologically,

  53. but right along with seed faith,

  54. there comes up, you know,

  55. dial 1-800, blah, blah, blah,

  56. and here's the place to send things.

  57. And it's all choreographed perfectly.

  58. It's great.

  59. I do want you to know

  60. that the Bible does talk about the matter of giving

  61. and is pretty consistent about it.

  62. And so one of the challenges that I face as a pastor

  63. is teaching on the subject

  64. and teaching on it clearly

  65. and then perhaps doing my very best

  66. to not be repetitious.

  67. Having said that,

  68. at the very outset,

  69. I'm going to tell you

  70. that for some of you who are here this morning,

  71. you're going to hear me say things

  72. that you've heard me say before

  73. or perhaps at some point

  74. you were in a ministry

  75. where the matter of giving was taught consistently.

  76. I, for one, grew up in a wonderful Christian home.

  77. I went to a Christian quasi-high school.

  78. I went to a Christian college.

  79. I taught in a Christian school.

  80. And I went to a Christian seminary.

  81. Can you top that?

  82. And I never heard the matter of stewardship taught carefully

  83. until Judith and I showed up

  84. at Westridge Baptist Church with Pastor Randy Patton.

  85. And lo and behold,

  86. when January rolled around,

  87. he did a four-week series on stewardship

  88. and it was the first time Judith and I

  89. had heard a careful, deliberate instruction

  90. from the Scriptures about the matter of stewardship.

  91. It was a life-changing,

  92. in terms of certain economy issues in our lives,

  93. it was a life-changing moment

  94. because I remember Judith and I,

  95. up to that time,

  96. had been pretty inconsistent

  97. in the matter of our giving.

  98. I'm not saying that we were off the charts,

  99. but it was not something that was woven in.

  100. And I remember as those sermons were progressing,

  101. Judith and I looking at each other and saying,

  102. you know what?

  103. I think this is something God wants us to work on

  104. and we were convicted of that matter.

  105. And I remember when Judith and I started giving

  106. consistently, faithfully, week by week,

  107. using what I was receiving as a benchmark

  108. and then giving proportionally off of that.

  109. And I remember at an earlier time in my life,

  110. I'm going to move this stand, musicians,

  111. so that I have room to move, okay?

  112. But I remember at an earlier time in my life,

  113. hearing, I heard a sermon.

  114. Remember, I didn't have consistent teaching

  115. on the matter of giving,

  116. but I heard one sermon that really resonated with me.

  117. It was this, if you give to God,

  118. you can't out-give God,

  119. so if you give Him a little,

  120. He's going to give you what?

  121. He's going to give you more.

  122. And I really liked that idea,

  123. but I really hadn't put it into practice,

  124. I want to tell you up front.

  125. But then when Judith and I started into the matter

  126. of being faithful in our giving,

  127. we actually went for about six months,

  128. being consistent,

  129. and you know what?

  130. We never got a check in the mailbox.

  131. I didn't get a raise.

  132. No one rear-ended my car,

  133. and I got a wonderful settlement.

  134. There was nothing magical that happened,

  135. except I remember we'd made this commitment,

  136. and we began actually tapping into our limited reserves

  137. at that point because we were,

  138. do you know what we learned?

  139. We learned that what we had to do

  140. in order to be faithful in our giving

  141. was adjust our spending style.

  142. Now, that's an epiphany for some people.

  143. It was for us.

  144. There were things that we stopped doing

  145. because instead of making God

  146. kind of the leftovers of our giving,

  147. how many of you understand what I'm talking about?

  148. Hey, does the government get its first take on your check?

  149. I'm just curious.

  150. How many of you notice

  151. that when you open your check,

  152. there's already deductions

  153. that someone's helped you with?

  154. And did you get to vote on those?

  155. Well, you may say that in an elective government,

  156. yes, yes, yes,

  157. but the truth of the matter is,

  158. you know, you see all those deductions,

  159. you think, huh, that one?

  160. That one?

  161. And, you know,

  162. our government stands right out front first

  163. and doesn't even put their hand out politely.

  164. They reach into your wallet.

  165. And I remember beginning to think,

  166. well, I'm going to put God above the government,

  167. and we began being responsible in our giving.

  168. And it was a culture shock for Judith and me

  169. to go through this process

  170. of learning to be faithful in our giving

  171. by, first of all,

  172. being more faithful in our spending.

  173. And so, this morning,

  174. as I come to teach on the subject of giving,

  175. and that's what we're going to do

  176. this week and next week,

  177. I want you to know

  178. that I have no hesitation

  179. for the repetition of the subject

  180. because I think there is benefit

  181. in reviewing very important Bible principles,

  182. and what we're going to find this morning

  183. is that the matter of giving

  184. really rests upon a very foundational Bible truth.

  185. The starting place for Christian giving

  186. is something that I want us to think about

  187. at the outset.

  188. Let me begin by saying that giving

  189. is really not something

  190. that is woven into our nature.

  191. It's not.

  192. And when you stop and think about it,

  193. that a lot of people are of the idea

  194. that the human heart is just inherently good,

  195. and we just have to have

  196. a little more opportunity

  197. to be nice people,

  198. and it'll all work out wonderfully.

  199. That's really not the truth.

  200. And the truth of the matter is

  201. is that we're not born givers.

  202. If you have any question about this,

  203. you can work in our nursery.

  204. In fact, I think Pastor Saul said

  205. that there's an opportunity

  206. with the twos and threes

  207. and three-year-olds,

  208. and go ahead and just do a little quiz,

  209. a little test,

  210. and come back and report to me.

  211. Let me know whether your children

  212. that you're working with in the nursery

  213. are just intuitively gracious and generous,

  214. whether it is Cheerios or toys.

  215. You know, it's amazing.

  216. Every toy in the nursery,

  217. there's only one of a kind, so to speak,

  218. and whatever one the one has,

  219. the other one wants.

  220. Have you noticed that?

  221. I'm just telling you that up front,

  222. the matter of giving

  223. is not something that we're hardwired for.

  224. It's also interesting to recognize

  225. that biblical giving

  226. doesn't really begin with commands.

  227. I think we do a disservice

  228. when we teach believers

  229. that faithfulness in giving

  230. is really predominantly something

  231. that flows out of command.

  232. Thou shalt do this.

  233. Now, I'm in favor of commands,

  234. but the Scriptures always begin

  235. by reminding us

  236. of the incredible generosity of God

  237. in relationship to us,

  238. and all that we have received

  239. ends up being the motive

  240. for the way in which we respond to God.

  241. And so, it's appropriate

  242. as we think about this matter of giving

  243. to recognize the Bible doesn't begin

  244. by saying,

  245. thou shalt, you know.

  246. In relationship to this also,

  247. I think it's important for us

  248. to realize that biblical giving

  249. is never manipulative

  250. or based on a false idea

  251. of return on investment.

  252. I want you to hear that said carefully

  253. because it is a very common theme

  254. in many places.

  255. You give in order to get.

  256. And the idea that goes with

  257. that seed faith type of idea

  258. is that, well, hey, you know,

  259. you give God $10,

  260. and it's kind of a seed faith.

  261. It shows you believe

  262. that He is going to keep His Word,

  263. and guess what He is going to do?

  264. He is going to return a benefit to you,

  265. and you can kind of count on that $10

  266. somehow or another

  267. spiritually growing into being

  268. a whole lot more money.

  269. And I can't tell you

  270. how common that subject is.

  271. Not only that,

  272. but a common way

  273. of churches raising money

  274. is doing all kinds of raffles

  275. and bingo

  276. and, you know,

  277. hey, what about cards?

  278. I mean, hey,

  279. wouldn't it be a good idea

  280. if we just kind of took something

  281. off the top of card games

  282. and things like that?

  283. What do you think?

  284. Is there anything in the Bible

  285. about relying on card games

  286. or chance as a means

  287. of raising funds?

  288. What's the answer from

  289. God's people?

  290. No.

  291. Meganoito.

  292. That's the word in the Greek.

  293. It's never let it be.

  294. Absolutely not.

  295. You may wonder why

  296. when we send our young people

  297. on a missions trip,

  298. we raise money the way we do.

  299. How many of you know

  300. how we raise money

  301. for a missions trip?

  302. We don't have them doing

  303. all kinds of little car washes

  304. and little projects

  305. and I don't want to throw

  306. a lot of cold water on that

  307. but here's what we do.

  308. We tell the people

  309. that are going to lead

  310. the missions trip,

  311. hey, you spend all your time

  312. helping our young people

  313. learn what it is

  314. to serve Christ.

  315. You help them learn

  316. the things they're going to use

  317. in Jamaica

  318. or, and Pastor Saul,

  319. you're equipping a team

  320. to go to Jamaica this summer.

  321. You do your work,

  322. we'll do our work.

  323. Our part's the support.

  324. As you think about this matter

  325. of giving for a return

  326. on the investment,

  327. I want you to stop

  328. and think just for a moment

  329. of a couple illustrations

  330. in the Bible.

  331. I'm just going to reference them

  332. and I'm going to assume

  333. that you can track with me

  334. but one would be the widow.

  335. Remember the widow

  336. that Jesus was kind of observing

  337. and at the temple

  338. people were throwing money in

  339. and along comes this widow

  340. and she dropped in

  341. two little mites.

  342. It's not like lice,

  343. it's two little coins,

  344. little eensy-weensy things.

  345. And Jesus made this statement,

  346. hey, there is a woman

  347. who's given more

  348. than all the rest

  349. of the guys have given.

  350. Now, did she walk out of there

  351. later jingling her pocket

  352. with ten mites

  353. or, you know,

  354. whatever it was?

  355. No, not at all.

  356. And here's another illustration.

  357. Remember Zacchaeus?

  358. When he came down out of the tree,

  359. what was the first thing he did?

  360. Does anybody remember?

  361. Raise your hand and wave at me

  362. if you know what he did.

  363. Just wave at me.

  364. That's all I'm looking for

  365. is just a wave.

  366. Do you know what Zacchaeus did

  367. when he came down from the tree?

  368. He said,

  369. hey, whoever I have cheated,

  370. I'm going to repay fourfold

  371. and half of what I have

  372. I'm given to the poor.

  373. Did he snicker under his breath

  374. and say,

  375. I'm getting it back.

  376. Is that what he did?

  377. No.

  378. Not at all.

  379. You see,

  380. the illustrations we find

  381. in the Bible

  382. of charitable giving

  383. have nothing to do

  384. with that kind of manipulation.

  385. So,

  386. the call

  387. to biblical giving

  388. really begins

  389. with the glory of God.

  390. And the call

  391. to biblical giving

  392. in your life

  393. as a believer

  394. really rests

  395. upon your view of God.

  396. That's where it is.

  397. We are to give

  398. because we are persuaded

  399. of His glory

  400. and we love His glory

  401. and we desire

  402. to see Him glorified.

  403. Let me have you look

  404. at a passage here.

  405. You're there in 1 Corinthians

  406. or maybe you moved on

  407. but,

  408. or your iPad went blank.

  409. Anyway,

  410. one of the things here,

  411. we're going to go to

  412. 2 Corinthians chapter 9.

    2 Corinthians 9 chapter mention

  413. In 1 Corinthians,

  414. Paul says,

  415. hey,

  416. first day of the week,

  417. this is what you're supposed to do.

  418. 2 Corinthians,

  419. he takes two full chapters.

  420. Two full chapters.

  421. That's not a drive-by shooting

  422. on the subject of giving.

  423. He really gets into it.

  424. And towards the very end

  425. of chapter 9,

  426. listen to what he says

  427. in verse 13.

  428. By their approval

  429. of this service,

  430. they will glorify God

  431. because your submission,

  432. because of your submission

  433. flowing from your confession

  434. of the gospel of Christ

  435. and the generosity

  436. of your contribution

  437. for them

  438. and for all others.

  439. What's he saying?

  440. As other people

  441. see the generosity

  442. of your heart,

  443. they're going to end up

  444. giving glory to God.

  445. Why would they glorify God?

  446. Because they realize

  447. that what you are doing

  448. is something

  449. that is atypical.

  450. It's unusual.

  451. It's unusual.

  452. Hey, everybody understands

  453. giving when you're going

  454. to get something back.

  455. Am I right?

  456. Some of you

  457. at Christmas time,

  458. you get little gifts

  459. from some of your suppliers.

  460. Do you know why

  461. you get those gifts?

  462. It's really not

  463. because your suppliers

  464. just really like you.

  465. It's because they're hoping

  466. that in the next year

  467. you're going to keep on

  468. buying product from them.

  469. And depending on where

  470. you are in the food chain,

  471. they kind of,

  472. their gift is proportionate.

  473. And do you think

  474. they write that off

  475. as a business expense?

  476. What do you think?

  477. Do you know what

  478. that's telling you?

  479. That's just part

  480. of doing business.

  481. Am I right?

  482. Brian, is that right?

  483. Can they write that?

  484. Oh, I got that

  485. as the CPA told me.

  486. You can write it off.

  487. It's all right.

  488. That's not giving

  489. for God's glory.

  490. That's self-serving,

  491. manipulative giving.

  492. And we look here

  493. and I want you to understand

  494. what it's saying is that,

  495. hey, people see

  496. the generosity

  497. of your hearts

  498. and they turn around

  499. and say, wow,

  500. these people think

  501. a lot about God.

  502. Biblical giving,

  503. ultimately,

  504. like all other

  505. Christian behaviors,

  506. are to reflect

  507. and declare

  508. the glory of God.

  509. That's what it's all about.

  510. So let me take it

  511. a little step further.

  512. We understand that

  513. giving is to really

  514. flow out of our view

  515. of God,

  516. but I want you

  517. to understand

  518. that all creation

  519. is designed by God

  520. to actually have

  521. a desire for His glory.

  522. Given that I'm putting

  523. so much emphasis

  524. on the subject

  525. of giving today,

  526. let's take a moment

  527. and study this issue

  528. of glory,

  529. which is an underpinning

  530. for the matter

  531. of giving.

  532. And when we talk

  533. about glory,

  534. we're talking about

  535. something that means

  536. weight or value.

  537. Remember,

  538. our giving really

  539. reflects our view,

  540. our value,

  541. or the weight

  542. that we attach to God.

  543. And so glory

  544. is something

  545. that may be conferred

  546. on someone

  547. or something.

  548. Turn back in your Bible,

  549. if you would,

  550. to Psalm chapter 8

    Psalms 8 chapter mention

  551. just for a moment,

  552. and we see

  553. in that passage

  554. that man

  555. has been given

  556. glory by God

  557. that was not really

  558. His to begin with.

  559. Psalm chapter 8,

    Psalms 8:4

  560. verse 4 and 5.

  561. What is man

  562. that you are mindful

  563. of him

  564. and the son of man

  565. that you care for him?

  566. And it's amazing

  567. to stop and realize

  568. that God thinks

  569. about me personally.

  570. Let me say that again

  571. slowly so you don't miss it.

  572. Everybody look here.

  573. Look here.

  574. It is really amazing

  575. that God thinks

  576. about me personally.

  577. I mean,

  578. how many people

  579. are in this world?

  580. Billions!

  581. I'll bet you

  582. there's some of you here

  583. that get a brain cramp

  584. just writing the number.

  585. That'd be me.

  586. But do you understand

  587. that God thinks

  588. about you personally?

  589. He says,

  590. what is man

  591. that you're mindful

  592. that you think about me?

  593. Verse 5,

  594. yet you have made him

  595. a little lower

  596. than the heavenly beings

  597. and crowned him

  598. with glory and honor.

  599. God has given glory

  600. to us

  601. and glory may be

  602. ascribed

  603. or attributed

  604. to something

  605. or something

  606. but when we

  607. look at

  608. something such as God

  609. or something

  610. that He has created,

  611. we're not making it

  612. glorious.

  613. We're just recognizing

  614. its glory.

  615. Let me give you

  616. an illustration of that.

  617. I have to tell you

  618. that I'm just so over snow.

  619. It's like,

  620. you know,

  621. the last storm

  622. did me in.

  623. How many of you

  624. remember the storm

  625. that put about

  626. six inches

  627. on all of our properties

  628. and driveways

  629. and then crusted it over

  630. with ice?

  631. My snowblower

  632. decided that it would

  633. not cooperate fully.

  634. Okay,

  635. it was over the top.

  636. That's when I said

  637. enough.

  638. And I remember

  639. watching several

  640. different people

  641. post on Facebook,

  642. oh,

  643. the snow is so lovely.

  644. And I thought to myself,

  645. that had to be a wife.

  646. I say that lovingly.

  647. My wife is sitting back here.

  648. That had to be a wife.

  649. Someone's sitting in there

  650. looking out the window

  651. with a cup of coffee

  652. in her hand saying,

  653. you know,

  654. look at that.

  655. Her husband is out there

  656. trying to avoid

  657. a heart attack,

  658. you know.

  659. And she's eating it up.

  660. Okay,

  661. now,

  662. it is true

  663. that snow is beautiful.

  664. So,

  665. when we look

  666. at that beautiful

  667. snowy scene

  668. and we say,

  669. wow,

  670. is that beautiful.

  671. That's just glorious.

  672. We're not,

  673. by our statement,

  674. making it so.

  675. We're only recognizing

  676. what it is.

  677. And,

  678. really,

  679. the reason God

  680. created us

  681. in all of creation

  682. is to show

  683. His glory.

  684. To show His glory.

  685. It's not just heaven

  686. or nature.

  687. It's not just snow

  688. or sunset

  689. that exists

  690. to glorify God.

  691. We're all created

  692. for that purpose.

  693. In fact,

  694. this is one of the

  695. interesting thoughts

  696. I want you to take away.

  697. And I want you to think

  698. about this

  699. in a very,

  700. very personal way.

  701. Stop and think.

  702. There's really only

  703. one of you.

  704. Everybody look up

  705. so you don't miss us.

  706. There's really only

  707. one of you.

  708. Only one.

  709. There will never be

  710. another person

  711. like you.

  712. even twins.

  713. I was,

  714. we had a wedding

  715. yesterday

  716. and weddings

  717. are just wonderful

  718. opportunities.

  719. Someone said to me,

  720. why do you choke up?

  721. There are a lot of reasons

  722. for that,

  723. but I happen to like weddings.

  724. And weddings remind me

  725. of my wedding.

  726. The first time I cried

  727. publicly was at

  728. my wedding.

  729. And I've been doing it

  730. ever since.

  731. Okay?

  732. But weddings are also

  733. profound opportunities

  734. for certain things

  735. that you plan to go

  736. one way

  737. not going that way.

  738. I'll never forget

  739. a set of twins

  740. in our fellowship.

  741. Twins.

  742. Now what's the deal

  743. with twins?

  744. You know,

  745. they come out

  746. just minutes apart.

  747. These twins,

  748. they were girls,

  749. were just absolutely

  750. opposite from each other.

  751. One who got married

  752. first had a wedding

  753. that was carried off

  754. with military precision.

  755. I mean,

  756. the wedding quarter

  757. did not actually stand

  758. with a stopwatch,

  759. but it was pretty close.

  760. I mean,

  761. I remember her back there

  762. and go,

  763. go,

  764. you know.

  765. And the second

  766. of the twins

  767. got married

  768. about eight months later

  769. and her attitude,

  770. they came from the same

  771. mom and dad

  772. and they also came

  773. out of the same womb

  774. and they're like,

  775. whatever,

  776. you know.

  777. Here was the really

  778. weird thing about it

  779. and it kind of taught

  780. me a great lesson.

  781. They both had

  782. equal set of hiccups

  783. and so I decided

  784. that,

  785. you know,

  786. take it easy,

  787. relax,

  788. it'll be all right.

  789. The only thing

  790. that counts

  791. is the I do,

  792. you know.

  793. So here we are,

  794. we're all about

  795. showing God

  796. His glory

  797. and making Him

  798. look good

  799. and each of us

  800. individually

  801. designed by God

  802. for His glory

  803. and it's appropriate

  804. for us to think about,

  805. so how am I

  806. glorifying God?

  807. That's what I want you

  808. to recognize.

  809. It's important.

  810. Let me give you

  811. a couple texts

  812. on the issue

  813. of glorifying God.

  814. Look at Romans chapter 11

    Romans 11:36

  815. verse 36.

  816. For from Him

  817. and through Him

  818. and to Him

  819. are all things,

  820. now here's the statement,

  821. to Him be glory

  822. forever,

  823. amen.

  824. To Him be glory

  825. forever,

  826. amen.

  827. Can I tell you

  828. that that wouldn't be

  829. a bad life verse?

  830. Do you know what I mean

  831. by a life verse?

  832. It's an operating principle.

  833. How is what I am doing

  834. making God look good?

  835. That's the question.

  836. Here's another passage

  837. in Colossians chapter 1

    Colossians 1:16

  838. verse 16.

  839. Colossians chapter 1

    Colossians 1:16

  840. verse 16.

  841. For by Him

  842. all things were created

  843. in heaven and on earth,

  844. visible and invisible,

  845. whatever,

  846. whether thrones

  847. or dominions

  848. or rulers

  849. or authorities,

  850. all things were created

  851. through Him

  852. and for Him.

  853. It's for God.

  854. So it follows then

  855. that if we exist

  856. for His glory,

  857. then all that we do,

  858. including our giving,

  859. let me say that carefully,

  860. so that all that we do,

  861. including our giving,

  862. must flow from our purpose

  863. and desire

  864. to glorify Him.

  865. Does that make sense?

  866. If He is

  867. the God of this universe

  868. and He made us

  869. for His glory,

  870. it is just a

  871. reasonable

  872. connection

  873. between the two

  874. that all that we do,

  875. including our giving,

  876. be a reflection

  877. of the glory of God.

  878. And so we might expect

  879. that every motive

  880. that pervades

  881. the life of a believer

  882. is really about

  883. the glory of Christ,

  884. the glory of God.

  885. And so that's a fair question

  886. for you to ask yourself

  887. this morning.

  888. Does my life

  889. really honestly reflect

  890. that I am interested

  891. in making Jesus

  892. look good?

  893. Right?

  894. Let me have you think

  895. with me across

  896. the broad scope

  897. of several different passages

  898. in relationship to this.

  899. Look at Ephesians 1,

    Ephesians 1:12

  900. verse 12.

  901. We're looking to illustrate

  902. this principle

  903. of glorifying God

  904. in Ephesians 1.

  905. It says,

  906. so that we who were

  907. the first to hope

  908. in Christ

  909. might be to the praise

  910. of His glory.

  911. Why did Jesus save you

  912. personally,

  913. particularly?

  914. So that He'd look good.

  915. Can't believe you picked Him.

  916. Do you remember

  917. getting picked

  918. in grade school

  919. for athletic activities

  920. in gym class?

  921. How many of you remember that?

  922. Here's the ugly truth.

  923. I did not develop

  924. physiologically

  925. until later in life

  926. and as a result

  927. in the early days

  928. when they would pick people

  929. for dodgeball

  930. or pick people

  931. for whatever it was,

  932. guess what I always knew

  933. was going to happen?

  934. I was the last person picked.

  935. In fact,

  936. you know,

  937. it was like,

  938. do we have to take Him?

  939. Verse 13.

  940. Verse 12,

  941. it says,

  942. so that we who were

  943. the first to hope

  944. in Christ

  945. might be to the praise

  946. of His glory.

  947. Hey,

  948. you know what?

  949. If you pick LeBron James,

  950. who gets the credit?

  951. You for being the good coach

  952. or LeBron for being

  953. on your team?

  954. You don't get credit

  955. for being a good coach.

  956. People think,

  957. duh,

  958. what do you think?

  959. It's going to happen.

  960. God,

  961. in picking you,

  962. got glory

  963. because you're a surprise

  964. to the unbelieving world.

  965. It says,

  966. why in the world

  967. would God save him?

  968. Ephesians chapter 1,

    Ephesians 1:14

  969. verse 14,

  970. who is the guarantee

  971. of our inheritance

  972. until we acquire

  973. possession of it

  974. to the praise

  975. of His glory.

  976. It's about the praise

  977. of Christ's glory,

  978. our salvation.

  979. Philippians chapter 1,

    Philippians 1:10

  980. verse 10 and 11,

  981. so that you may approve

  982. what is excellent

  983. and so be pure

  984. and blameless

  985. for the day of Christ

  986. filled with all

  987. the fruit of righteousness

  988. that comes through

  989. Jesus Christ

  990. to the glory

  991. and praise of God.

  992. What's that saying?

  993. How does God get praised

  994. in the life of a believer?

  995. Hey,

  996. it's when you,

  997. through the power

  998. of the Spirit,

  999. act differently

  1000. than the pagan culture

  1001. we live in.

  1002. Am I right?

1003. When you are in line

1004. at one of the stores

  1005. and someone immediately

  1006. in front of you

  1007. is just fussing

  1008. and fuming

  1009. about one of the

  1010. particular issues

1011. that there was a spill

  1012. on aisle nine

  1013. and nobody claimed

  1014. and cleaned it up.

  1015. You ought to see

  1016. the bathroom.

1017. And you come right behind

  1018. and you act

  1019. exactly the same way.

  1020. Does Jesus look good?

  1021. No.

  1022. It's when you

1023. allow the grace of God

  1024. to have a difference

  1025. in your life

1026. and you then play that out

  1027. and people say,

  1028. whoa,

1029. what meds are you on?

  1030. You know,

  1031. that's,

1032. why are you that way?

  1033. Oh,

  1034. well,

  1035. Jesus handpicked me

  1036. out of the crowd

  1037. to be an exception

  1038. to the rule

1039. so that he would look good.

  1040. Colossians chapter 3.

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  1041. Colossians chapter 3

    Colossians 3:17

  1042. verse 17.

  1043. And whatever you do

  1044. in word or deed,

  1045. do everything

  1046. in the name

  1047. of the Lord Jesus

  1048. giving thanks

  1049. to God the Father

  1050. through him.

  1051. Over in 1 Corinthians

  1052. it says,

  1053. whether you eat

  1054. or drink.

  1055. By the way,

  1056. how important

  1057. is eating and drinking?

  1058. You know,

  1059. not important at all

  1060. right now,

1061. but an hour from now,

  1062. guess what you're

  1063. going to be saying?

  1064. Hey,

1065. he has gone way over.

  1066. It's time to stop.

  1067. It's time to eat

  1068. and drink,

  1069. okay?

  1070. Eating and drinking

  1071. are very important

  1072. and,

  1073. you know,

  1074. what we do

  1075. is for his glory.

  1076. That's the point

  1077. of 1 Corinthians 10 31.

  1078. So I want you

  1079. to understand

  1080. that God calls us

  1081. to love him

  1082. and his glory

  1083. and to live

1084. and give for him alone.

  1085. Now,

  1086. sadly,

  1087. sin has led men

  1088. to desire

  1089. their own glory.

  1090. Isn't that true?

  1091. When sin

  1092. entered the garden,

  1093. Adam and Eve

  1094. fell to the temptation

  1095. of refusing

  1096. to glorify God

  1097. and rather they sought

  1098. to put themselves

  1099. in his place.

  1100. That's an interesting

  1101. idea,

  1102. isn't it?

  1103. God,

  1104. it's not about you,

  1105. it's about me.

  1106. Smile,

  1107. everybody.

  1108. Everybody smile at me.

  1109. Everybody smile.

  1110. When we say no

  1111. to faithful giving,

  1112. that's what we're

  1113. telling God.

  1114. Do you follow me?

  1115. God,

  1116. we're saying,

  1117. it's really not

  1118. about you,

  1119. it's about me

  1120. so that I can

  1121. upgrade my pizza

  1122. or that I can

  1123. have a smarter

  1124. phone

  1125. or so that,

  1126. you know,

  1127. there are all kinds

  1128. of reasons.

  1129. But I want you

  1130. to understand

  1131. that when we

  1132. decide we are

  1133. not going to make

  1134. God first,

  1135. it shows up

  1136. all different

  1137. kinds of places.

  1138. At the root

  1139. of every sin

  1140. is a desire

  1141. to not glorify God.

  1142. We find that

  1143. over in Romans

    Romans 1:21

  1144. chapter 1

  1145. verse 21

  1146. and it says this

  1147. and I'll just

  1148. recite the passage

  1149. to you,

  1150. it says,

  1151. they did not

  1152. give him glory.

  1153. That's what

  1154. the unbelieving

  1155. world did.

  1156. They chose

  1157. not to glorify

  1158. God.

  1159. So,

  1160. as we think

  1161. about the realm

  1162. of giving,

  1163. we understand

  1164. that we can

  1165. bribe people

  1166. who have a

  1167. small view

  1168. of God

  1169. to give

  1170. with certain

  1171. perks.

  1172. Do you follow

  1173. that?

  1174. If what you

  1175. are doing

  1176. is you don't

  1177. have a high

  1178. view of God

  1179. and you want

  1180. to nurture

  1181. giving,

  1182. you've got

  1183. to figure out

  1184. how to manipulate

  1185. the situation.

  1186. You want to

  1187. be charitable

  1188. and really give

  1189. generously?

  1190. I'll tell you

  1191. what.

  1192. a pastor

  1193. will show up

  1194. at your door

  1195. and take you

  1196. out to coffee

  1197. in the limo

  1198. that the church

  1199. has.

  1200. Some of you

  1201. are scratching

  1202. your head

  1203. saying,

  1204. I didn't know

  1205. you had a limo.

  1206. I don't,

  1207. just using an

  1208. illustration,

  1209. bear with me,

  1210. okay?

  1211. Or,

  1212. you know what?

  1213. There are all

  1214. kinds of ways

  1215. to manipulate it,

  1216. right?

  1217. And whether

  1218. it's public

  1219. commendation

  1220. or a coffee

  1221. mug with,

  1222. you know,

  1223. faithful giver

  1224. on it,

  1225. you know,

  1226. something like

  1227. that,

  1228. something really,

  1229. you know,

  1230. you could set

  1231. that on your

  1232. desk at work,

  1233. right?

  1234. Faithful giver?

  1235. What is that

  1236. about?

  1237. Let's come back

  1238. to the truth.

  1239. Our giving

  1240. reflects our view

  1241. of His glory.

  1242. That's what it's

  1243. all about.

  1244. How a man

  1245. gives

  1246. and why a man

  1247. gives

  1248. says it all

  1249. about what he

  1250. really thinks

  1251. about God.

  1252. Let me say

  1253. that again

  1254. slowly.

  1255. How a man

  1256. gives

  1257. and why a man

  1258. gives

  1259. says it all

  1260. about what

  1261. he thinks

  1262. about God.

  1263. Now,

  1264. I didn't say

  1265. what he gives.

  1266. I didn't say

  1267. what he gives.

  1268. I think

  1269. it was back

  1270. in 2004,

  1271. 2007,

  1272. Judith and I

  1273. went to

  1274. Newport

  1275. on the coast.

  1276. It's where

  1277. people like

  1278. J. Pierpont Morgan

  1279. and

  1280. Getty

  1281. and some

  1282. of the other

  1283. incredibly

  1284. wealthy

  1285. robber barons.

  1286. Now,

  1287. I know this is

  1288. history lesson

  1289. a little bit,

  1290. but the robber barons,

  1291. do you know how

  1292. they made their money?

  1293. Well,

  1294. one with creative

  1295. ideas,

  1296. but with incredibly

  1297. manipulative,

  1298. cruel treatment

  1299. of other people.

  1300. Now,

  1301. they just,

  1302. they gathered

  1303. wealth by just

  1304. giant sucking

  1305. sound.

  1306. And then

  1307. towards the

  1308. end of their

  1309. years,

  1310. they decided

  1311. that they

  1312. wanted to

  1313. kind of

  1314. redeem

  1315. their

  1316. reputations

  1317. and do you

  1318. know how

  1319. they did

  1320. that?

  1321. Well,

  1322. they gave

  1323. it away

  1324. and now

  1325. they didn't

  1326. have any

  1327. need for it.

  1328. Well,

  1329. why don't

  1330. we build

  1331. libraries?

  1332. Why don't

  1333. we build,

  1334. you know,

  1335. and so

  1336. they would

  1337. be involved

  1338. in charitable

  1339. donations.

  1340. What had

  1341. they done

  1342. to the

  1343. countless

  1344. people

  1345. that they

  1346. had

  1347. impoverished

  1348. in their

  1349. effort to

  1350. gather wealth?

  1351. Nothing.

  1352. They didn't

  1353. do anything

  1354. for them.

  1355. And it

  1356. was all

  1357. about their

  1358. control

  1359. and their

  1360. name.

  1361. Let me

  1362. come back

  1363. again.

  1364. It's not

  1365. how much

  1366. you give,

  1367. but it is

  1368. why you give

  1369. and how

  1370. you give.

  1371. And so

  1372. ultimately,

  1373. a generous

  1374. heart really

  1375. reflects the

  1376. heart of

  1377. God in

  1378. that our

  1379. heart ends

  1380. up being

  1381. generous because

  1382. He is

  1383. generous.

  1384. You know,

  1385. one of the

  1386. things that I

  1387. have said to

  1388. you as a

  1389. fellowship over

  1390. and over

  1391. again is

  1392. that our

  1393. fellowship is

  1394. characterized,

  1395. and I mean

  1396. that,

  1397. is characterized

  1398. by a level

  1399. of generosity

  1400. that is

  1401. exceptional.

  1402. And that

  1403. generosity

  1404. is not

  1405. something that

  1406. is fed

  1407. by manipulation.

  1408. It is

  1409. fed by

  1410. your

  1411. appreciation

  1412. for the

  1413. grace of

  1414. God and

  1415. the goodness

  1416. in His

  1417. treatment of

  1418. you and

  1419. the readiness

  1420. you have to

  1421. partner with

  1422. what He is

  1423. doing around

  1424. the world.

  1425. Over and

  1426. over again,

  1427. I've had

  1428. people ask

  1429. me over the

  1430. years,

  1431. what do

  1432. you do

  1433. that encourages

  1434. your people

  1435. to be so

  1436. generous?

  1437. Do you know

  1438. what the

  1439. answer is?

  1440. We talk

  1441. about God.

  1442. We look

  1443. at His

  1444. Word.

  1445. We value

  1446. the grace

  1447. of Christ

  1448. that saved

  1449. us from

  1450. the miserable

  1451. self-centered

  1452. lifestyle that

  1453. we used to

  1454. live, and

  1455. the outflow

  1456. of that is

  1457. that I

  1458. don't have

  1459. to stand

  1460. up here and

  1461. make all

  1462. kinds of

  1463. wild promises

  1464. about if

  1465. you put

  1466. ten dollars

  1467. in the

  1468. offer,

  1469. you're

  1470. going to

  1471. get back

  1472. double.

  1473. In fact,

  1474. you know

  1475. what?

  1476. If you

  1477. can hold

  1478. your breath

  1479. for the

  1480. next week,

  1481. this week

  1482. and next

  1483. week,

  1484. you'll

  1485. probably

  1486. not hear

  1487. me bring

  1488. up giving

  1489. for another

  1490. whole 12

  1491. months.

  1492. Do you

  1493. know why?

  1494. We're going

  1495. to spend all

  1496. the rest of

  1497. the time

  1498. talking about

  1499. Jesus and

  1500. what He's

  1501. doing in

  1502. our life,

  1503. and the

  1504. blessing we

  1505. have of

  1506. knowing His

  1507. love,

  1508. and the

  1509. certainty of

  1510. eternity,

  1511. and the

  1512. outflow of

  1513. that is

  1514. that you as

  1515. a people

  1516. have hearts

  1517. that are

  1518. prompted to

  1519. be generous

  1520. in your

  1521. lifestyle.

  1522. Let me put it

  1523. this way and

  1524. close.

  1525. Grace changes

  1526. us from

  1527. being a slave

  1528. to our own

  1529. dark hearts

  1530. to living and

  1531. giving for

  1532. Him.

  1533. Isn't that

  1534. true?

  1535. Grace changes

  1536. us from

  1537. being a slave

  1538. to our own

  1539. dark hearts

  1540. to living and

  1541. giving for

  1542. Him.

  1543. You know,

  1544. every one of

  1545. us in this

  1546. room started

  1547. out at one

  1548. point as a

  1549. miserable,

  1550. hell-bound

  1551. sinner who

  1552. had no hope

  1553. at all.

  1554. And whether

  1555. we responded

  1556. to the grace

  1557. of Christ as

  1558. a child growing

  1559. up in a home

  1560. where we heard

  1561. the Bible or

  1562. it was years

  1563. later when the

  1564. Spirit of God

  1565. convicted us and

  1566. drew us to the

  1567. cross, there

  1568. came that point

  1569. where the burden

  1570. of sin was so

  1571. heavy on our

  1572. life and the

  1573. shame and the

  1574. guilt and the

  1575. terror of the

  1576. prospect of the

  1577. judgment of God

  1578. that we cried

  1579. out and said,

  1580. I need help.

  1581. And you know

  1582. what?

  1583. Here's the truth.

  1584. Christ Jesus

  1585. came into the

  1586. world to save

  1587. sinners.

  1588. sinners.

  1589. And this

  1590. morning, most

  1591. of what we have

  1592. talked about is

  1593. not giving.

  1594. Most of what

  1595. we've talked

  1596. about is the

  1597. generosity of

  1598. God that would

  1599. willingly sacrifice

  1600. His own Son for

  1601. your sins on the

  1602. cross.

  1603. And the way in

  1604. which most of

  1605. you here give

  1606. this morning is

  1607. a reflection of

  1608. the simple fact

  1609. that you stand

  1610. amazed at the

  1611. gift of God in

  1612. your salvation and

  1613. the way you give

  1614. just says thank

  1615. you.

  1616. I do recognize

  1617. because I went

  1618. through that

  1619. experience as well

  1620. that there are

  1621. some of you here

  1622. this morning that

  1623. the subject of

  1624. giving is something

  1625. that honestly you've

  1626. really never dealt

  1627. with.

  1628. And I've got to

  1629. tell you this.

  1630. At the end of

  1631. the day, the

  1632. scriptures make

  1633. it clear that

  1634. people who have a

  1635. high view of God

  1636. are generous in

  1637. their giving.

  1638. And people who

  1639. have a low view

  1640. of God are

  1641. selfish in their

  1642. giving.

  1643. You let God sort

  1644. that out in your

  1645. heart.

  1646. Does that make

  1647. sense?

  1648. That's the

  1649. Spirit's work.

  1650. But go ahead and

  1651. say this as a

  1652. prayer, Lord, I'm

  1653. willing for you to

  1654. do whatever is

  1655. necessary to deal

  1656. with my heart in

  1657. relationship to the

  1658. matter of my view

  1659. of you.

  1660. Let's close in

  1661. prayer.

  1662. Our Father God, we

  1663. are thankful that

  1664. your scriptures are

  1665. clear that you are

  1666. worthy of all our

  1667. glory and all our

  1668. affection.

  1669. And this morning

  1670. as we attend to

  1671. your word and we

  1672. listen to the truth

1673. of what it has for

  1674. us, we recognize

  1675. that you who

  1676. abide in heaven

  1677. pay particular

  1678. attention to the

  1679. heart that we

  1680. have and you want

  1681. us this morning to

  1682. rejoice in you and

  1683. to serve you.

  1684. We pray for the

  1685. ministry of the

  1686. Spirit of God in

  1687. the hearts of those

  1688. that need to be

  1689. convicted, whether it

1690. be in the matter of

  1691. their salvation or

  1692. the matter of their

  1693. generosity or there's

  1694. an attitude and a

1695. sin that needs to be

  1696. confessed and forsaken.

  1697. We ask that you

1698. would do that, that you

  1699. might be glorified and

1700. we ask this in your

  1701. precious name.

  1702. Amen.
