  1. Would you take your Bible off stage?

  2. !

  3. I would like Molly Collins.

  4. Where are you, Molly?

  5. Would you come here to the front, Molly, please?

  6. I don't want you to touch this.

  7. I don't want you to get close to this.

  8. Stand right over here.

  9. Does anybody know what this is?

  10. What is it?

  11. What is it?

  12. It's not a bear trap.

  13. A bear trap is about 50 pounds, and they're illegal.

  14. No, they are.

  15. You're not allowed to trap bear anymore.

  16. This is just a little old minor old foot trap.

  17. But I'm going to use it as an illustration here.

  18. Okay.

  19. That's a smart girl.

  20. I don't know.

  21. I don't know what you think I'm going to do with that pencil, but it's not what you think I'm going to do.

  22. Take your Bibles.

  23. Take your Bibles.

  24. Take your Bibles.

  25. And turn in them to Ephesians chapter 6.

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  26. Stay with me, Molly.

  27. Don't leave.

  28. Okay.

  29. Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might.

  30. Put on the whole armor of God.

  31. Put on the whole armor of God.

  32. God.

  33. That you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.

  34. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities,

  35. against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

  36. And Molly, what I want you to do is point from a safe distance.

  37. Point at that trap.

  38. There you go.

  39. Ow.

  40. There it is.

  41. Thank you, Molly.

  42. Thank you, Molly.

  43. Thank you.

  44. How many of you understand how serious our enemy is about destroying you?

  45. Probably one of the tests of how seriously you take the enemy is whether or not this morning as you were getting up

  46. and going through the responsibilities of your mourning.

  47. For one, if you took the time to pray, to read the Scriptures, do you follow that?

  48. If you don't think there is an enemy after you, you probably didn't do that.

  49. In fact, one of the things that Jesus said, He said it in numerous different places,

  50. but one of the things that He said when His disciples asked Him, teach us about prayer, He said,

  51. pray this way, right?

  52. Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, kingdom come, all that kind of stuff,

  53. and lead us not into temptation.

  54. Elsewhere, Jesus, as He was talking to His disciples, as He went into the Garden of Gethsemane to pray,

  55. prior to His crucifixion, He said, listen, pray that you don't enter into temptation.

  56. That's what He said.

  57. Let's pray.

  58. Our Father God, we are so deeply blessed, we who know Christ,

  59. to have the blessing of relationship with the Lord Jesus as our God and Savior,

  60. and to have the Word that is given to us as this rich and incredible blessing,

  61. that we might be completely furnished unto all good works,

  62. and to have the indwelling Spirit who abides in us

  63. and is our advocate and our ally and our enabler,

  64. and who we may justly rely upon to not only understand the Scriptures,

  65. but to put them into practice.

  66. I'm thankful for the Spirit of God that

  67. I am so deeply dependent upon in preaching.

  68. and that same Spirit

  69. who is actively at work in the lives of believers,

  70. that they might

  71. find the answer

  72. in the prayer that we find in the Psalms

  73. where it says,

  74. Open my eyes that I might behold

  75. wondrous truths out of thy law.

  76. And so we want Your Spirit to work in us this morning

  77. that we might be different as a result of hearing the Word.

  78. And we ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.

  79. Well, by this point,

  80. you figured out that we're coming close to the end of the book of Ephesians.

  81. And I have enjoyed this book tremendously,

  82. but I have to tell you,

  83. I'm beginning to kind of make that transitional shift

  84. in my prayer life

  85. and beginning to think about the book of John.

  86. And Lord willing,

  87. and should He tarry and you permit,

  88. I intend to begin preaching in John sometime in the fall,

  89. maybe late summer.

  90. We have three other groups

  91. that are going to be doing Scripture Memory.

  92. Tom and Carrie, you're doing next week.

  93. Am I correct with that?

  94. And then after that,

  95. I think Mary and the children,

  96. you're doing six.

  97. Are you not doing six?

  98. Yeah.

  99. You're doing six.

  100. Isaac and company,

  101. you guys are doing five.

  102. Am I right?

  103. See, there we go.

  104. We got it all worked out.

  105. And we're coming close to the end.

  106. How many of you know how the book of Ephesians kind of begins?

  107. Does anybody have one of those favorite verses

  108. that you can lock in and say,

  109. here's how it begins?

  110. Let me help you with this.

  111. It says in Ephesians 1, verse 3,

    Ephesians 1:3

  112. it says,

  113. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  114. who has blessed us in the heavenlies with all spiritual blessings in Christ Jesus.

  115. We're blessed in Jesus.

  116. It doesn't get any better than that.

  117. And here, Paul opens up this unbelievable book that brings glory to Christ.

  118. It causes us to look forward to the day that we're going to be home with Him.

  119. And yet, as Paul comes towards the end of this book,

  120. he goes into perhaps one of the more militant and challenging passages that we find in the New Testament

  121. because he tells us that we're involved in conflict.

  122. And here we are.

  123. We're dealing with this and where Paul kind of reminds us that we're involved in warfare

  124. and that we have a horrible enemy that is absolutely bent on our grief and our shame.

  125. And one of the things that we should know from the very beginning is that we're not home yet.

  126. You know, it would be nice, wouldn't it, to be home?

  127. It says in the Scriptures, absent in the body, what?

  128. Present with the Lord.

  129. And I like the song that our choir sang this morning.

  130. Man, what a, what a, that was good.

  131. And just listening to you guys sing, I'm up here.

  132. There's only one thing that goes along with our corporate singing,

  133. and that is that I sometimes don't get some of the words right.

  134. Am I right, young ladies?

  135. They're sitting over here just having just a snickering time

  136. because I sing different words than they do.

  137. And it doesn't put me off so long as they can handle it.

  138. But we're just, we're having a great time singing and rejoicing in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  139. And yet the fact of the matter is, is that we're not home yet.

  140. We're not home yet.

  141. And Paul, this morning, wants us to understand just how serious this conflict is.

  142. And so as you take up this passage, let me kind of set the broad picture,

  143. and then we're going to come down into it a little more narrow, a little more specific.

  144. But I want you to understand that for one thing, Christ commands,

  145. and this is something that we have to understand,

  146. what is given to us here is given by a very pointed fashion.

  147. Christ commands a warlike mindset.

  148. Now, you have to face it.

  149. Nobody really likes war for long.

  150. It's fun to play paintball, you know, I mean, it's as long as you're not getting hit, right?

  151. But the fact of the matter is, is that war is really not something that is entertaining.

  152. It's horrible.

  153. It's brutal.

  154. When I was younger, I remember just during the time, I was back during the Vietnam era,

  155. and I remember working with a man who was a veteran of Iwo Jima.

  156. Later on, I had a friend who actually was in Vietnam, and he was on long-range patrols by himself.

  157. He was a forward observer for artillery, and he would be sent out into the jungles alone by himself,

  158. only he and a dog, and they would spend a week out there scouting and then calling in shots.

  159. One of the things that I discovered about combat veterans is that none of them sit around thumping their chest

  160. talking about how neat it was.

  161. In fact, I've got to tell you, neither of these guys were the least bit interested in sharing some of their old war stories with me.

  162. They really didn't want to talk about it.

  163. Combat was something that they hated, and even though they'd come out a winner in one sense,

  164. they were not very pleased with what all had taken place, and so they were very cautious.

  165. I want you to understand that we're at war, and so our Savior tells us here in this passage that we face an enemy

  166. that is bent on our destruction, our harm.

  167. And one of the things that goes with preparing to preach is actually,

  168. and you would understand that this would be reasonable, that as I am preaching or as I'm studying in the study there,

  169. and as I'm meditating and praying about it, I have your faces and your hearts before me in the study and in my private time.

  170. Does that make sense?

  171. One of the things that goes with being a shepherd in the same place for quite a few years

  172. is that I know some of the things that have happened in your life,

  173. and I know some of the things that the enemy is trying to do to unhinge and to harm you.

  174. And I know some of you that are almost brain-dead to what he's doing.

  175. And so it follows then that when I take up this passage prompted by the Spirit of God,

  176. and I come to you, I say with a shepherd's sympathy, listen carefully.

  177. This is for you.

  178. I want you to understand as we look at this passage that one of the things that we should know at the very outset

  179. is that we're not to fight in our own power.

  180. We're not to fight in our own power.

  181. It says, finally, there in verse 10,

  182. Be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might.

  183. Put on the whole armor of God

  184. that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.

  185. You know, I go back to what I said earlier that, you know, apart from video games and stuff like that,

  186. real combat is not something that is entertaining and something that we take pleasure in.

  187. It's hard and it's difficult.

  188. And as we think about what is being spoken of here,

  189. I want you to understand that the Spirit of God wants you to understand clearly

  190. that this battle that we're involved in is something that has great risk and great harm

  191. and you will not escape it until the day you draw your last breath.

  192. My dad is 90.

  193. I don't mean to overplay the fact that my heart's caught up in that,

  194. but I want to tell you, I've watched my father over the last number of years

  195. and on recurring occasions, I've spoken to him very explicitly and clearly and said,

  196. Dad, you can't stop the fight.

  197. I'm not talking about the physiological fight.

  198. I'm talking about the spiritual conflict

  199. where the enemy is very interested in allowing discouragement and despair

  200. to breed over and eventually produce bitterness in the life of an individual

  201. who has served with rich distinction.

  202. And I say to him, Dad, you have to stay focused on the Lord Jesus Christ

  203. and live your life for Him even as you live it,

  204. doing nothing other than drawing breath where you sit.

  205. We're involved in conflict and it won't stop until the day we're home.

  206. And you've heard the passage where it says,

  207. Be strong in the Lord and the power of His might.

  208. In other words, don't try this alone.

  209. You desperately need help for this daily battle.

  210. Furthermore, I do want you to understand something as we look at this passage,

  211. that this battle is defensive by design.

  212. Defensive by design.

  213. He is not calling us to be, you know, ninja turtles or navy seals.

  214. You know, it's not a lot about, I'm out there doing my thing

  215. and, you know, I'm a punching it out for Jesus kind of guy.

  216. If you read the passage, you understand that the entire picture

  217. is this defensive mindset.

  218. Put on the whole armor of God that you may be able to stand

  219. against the schemes of the devil.

  220. The imagery that Paul relied on

  221. was imagery that communicates

  222. a defensive and protective environment

  223. where we are resisting the adversary.

  224. We're not out there duking it out with him on our own.

  225. The word stand that Paul uses here

  226. is a word that talks about kind of getting anchored in.

  227. It's talking about getting set.

  228. Probably there are a few of you here

  229. that at one time or another in P.E.

  230. before there were too many injuries,

  231. played something called Red Rover, Red Rover,

  232. Let Timmy Come Over.

  233. Come on, anybody here?

  234. Raise your hand and say, I did that.

  235. Okay?

  236. And, you know, what you did

  237. was you picked on the wusses to begin with.

  238. You know, the little guys that weighed 69 pounds

  239. and you and whatever,

  240. they would come running at you.

  241. And what was the game?

  242. If they broke through, what happened?

  243. They took one back with them.

  244. But if you held on,

  245. they were toast and they were part of your line, right?

  246. And the way in which you did that

  247. is you said, you know, let Timmy come over

  248. and Timmy would come running at you

  249. with his little frame and not anymore,

  250. but, you know, he'd come running at you

  251. and as he was getting closer and closer,

  252. what were you doing?

  253. You know, and as the guy would bump into you,

  254. kind of give a little bit.

  255. How many of you learned that?

  256. You know, give a little bit

  257. and pretty soon his energy was dissipated

  258. and you had him.

  259. In ancient warfare,

  260. I want to tell you something.

  261. Ancient warfare was not like this.

  262. We are on the other side of the country

  263. playing with a video game

  264. and we're going to drop a rocket

  265. on somebody over in, you know, Afghanistan.

  266. Ancient warfare was very personal,

  267. in your face, right up.

  268. Essentially, it was an armed shoving match

  269. where you got real close

  270. and here's the truth.

  271. The ones who turned down, backed down,

  272. turned around and ran

  273. were the ones who got stabbed in the,

  274. guess what?

  275. The back.

  276. And so what you wanted to do in warfare

  277. was you wanted to get your shield out in front

  278. and you wanted to get,

  279. and the soldiers actually had leather sandals

  280. with iron cleats in them.

  281. They weren't for walking on the beach in.

  282. They were for, you know,

  283. digging their way in

  284. and then here would come this horde

  285. of, you know, unwashed enemies.

  286. You know, whoo,

  287. camping in the old days was really bad.

  288. You know, they'd come running at you

  289. and then bang, they'd slam into you

  290. and then what were you doing

  291. with your little spear

  292. and your little sword?

  293. What were you doing?

  294. Does anybody have an idea?

  295. You were sticking them

  296. wherever place you could.

  297. You know, I mean,

  298. there's nothing wrong with

  299. chopping off a guy's leg.

  300. Do you understand that?

  301. Or stabbing him in the thigh.

  302. You know, wherever,

  303. you were just flailing at him.

  304. And your safety was in being locked

  305. into a defensive,

  306. protective environment

  307. and staying there.

  308. I want you to understand

  309. that as you look at this passage

  310. as we open up,

  311. you have to understand

  312. that we are to rely upon his power

  313. and we're to rely upon his armor

  314. and we're to stand firm in him

  315. and we're to stand together

  316. as a body

  317. rather than as these solo secret agents

  318. for the king.

  319. Listen to me.

  320. I think one of the things

  321. that has really amplified

  322. Satan's effectiveness

  323. in contemporary Christian living,

  324. in causing harm

  325. to contemporary Christian living,

  326. is that there's so many people

  327. out there today

  328. that I bump into

  329. who call themselves Christians

  330. that really have no ongoing connection

  331. with a body of believers.

  332. And they are out there

  333. by themselves

  334. trying to deal with an adversary

  335. and they have no companionship,

  336. no help,

  337. no encouragement,

  338. no people to depend upon

  339. that are going to say to them,

  340. hey, don't be doing that.

  341. You're going to get hurt.

  342. Well, I want you to understand

  343. as we look at this passage

  344. there in verse 11,

  345. let me read it to you.

  346. Put on the whole armor of God

  347. that you may be able to stand

  348. against the schemes of the devil.

  349. So, one, we see that

  350. we're to have this warfare mindset,

  351. but second,

  352. Christ wants us to understand

  353. who our enemy is.

  354. Now, in that verse,

  355. it says that you may be able

  356. to stand against the schemes

  357. of the devil.

  358. Let me give you a little bit

  359. of translation here,

  360. and I'm not all about the Greek

  361. kind of piling on you

  362. so that you go home

  363. and know the recipe.

  364. I want you to know the cake,

  365. but here's the deal.

  366. That word scheme

  367. is the word methodea.

  368. Hmm.

  369. What does methodea sound like?

  370. Does anybody have an idea?

  371. Come on, give me the English word.

  372. Method.

  373. And when Paul tells us

  374. that there is a methodea,

  375. what he is telling us

  376. is that Satan actually has a plan

  377. and is working according

  378. to a systematic pattern

  379. to try and hurt you.

  380. That's what he's saying.

  381. Look at it again.

  382. It says,

  383. that you may be able

  384. to stand against the schemes

  385. or the methodic attack

  386. of Satan against you personally.

  387. David Jeremiah makes a statement

  388. that,

  389. and it's sanctified imagination.

  390. How many of you understand

  391. what sanctified imagination is?

  392. It's kind of like speculation,

  393. okay?

  394. But in his sanctified imagination,

  395. he talks about the fact

  396. that you could probably go

  397. into the devil's office

  398. and you'd find a filing cabinet

  399. and there in the filing cabinet

  400. was a file with your name on it.

  401. And Satan has an idea

  402. of how to mess you up.

  403. You personally.

  404. He's got a file

  405. that says Tim Knoyer on it.

  406. He's got one that says

  407. Henry Covert on it.

  408. He's got one that says

  409. Gordy Hickey on it.

  410. He's got one that says

  411. Saul Green on it.

  412. He's got one that says

  413. Bob Consul.

  414. He knows us.

  415. And he's after us.

  416. I want you to understand

  417. something about Satan's strategies.

  418. For one,

  419. they're insanely repetitious.

  420. Don't take pleasure

  421. in the fact

  422. that he's so repetitious

  423. because we are

  424. incredibly foolish.

  425. I mean,

  426. you know what?

  427. I'm not going to set it again,

  428. but you know,

  429. I could set this trap

  430. and just put a little bit

  431. of rancid meat on it.

  432. Do you follow that?

  433. And then just cover

  434. a little bit of grass

  435. and stuff like that

  436. and set it out in my lawn

  437. and guess what would happen

  438. within a day or two?

  439. There would be something in it.

  440. Not something I'd eat,

  441. but it would be something in it.

  442. Okay.

  443. And I could take the same trap

  444. this fall.

  445. It was pretty cold.

  446. You know that.

  447. Pretty cold.

  448. And I went out in my garage.

  449. My wife has a pathological

  450. hatred for mice.

  451. And I am the family

  452. mousetrapper.

  453. Okay.

  454. And in fact,

  455. I bought like about

  456. six bags of them

  457. and she said,

  458. honey,

  459. why did you do that?

  460. We have three left over

  461. from last year.

  462. I said,

  463. never hurts.

  464. And if my wife

  465. has anything about

  466. mousetraps,

  467. it just use them.

  468. So I'm out there

  469. setting these mousetraps

  470. all over the place.

  471. You know what?

  472. A couple times

  473. I could catch the same,

  474. two or three mice

  475. on the same trap

  476. with the same

  477. peanut butter bit.

  478. Now how deceptive

  479. is a little blob

  480. of peanut butter

  481. on a mousetrap?

  482. Very?

  483. No.

  484. But it works.

  485. Just so long

  486. as they don't eat much of it,

  487. I just reset the thing.

  488. Do you follow that?

  489. Just kind of bend

  490. the spring back

  491. and clean the other one off

  492. and don't even have

  493. to lay it far away

  494. and ready to go.

  495. Now look here.

  496. It says Satan

  497. has a strategy.

  498. He's got a strategy.

  499. And he's after you.

  500. I want you to understand

  501. that he has classic attacks

  502. that have succeeded

  503. since the garden.

  504. And he also knows

  505. your particular weakness.

  506. Look in your Bible

  507. just for a moment.

  508. Go over to Hebrews 12,

    Hebrews 12:1

  509. verse 1.

  510. Hebrews 12,

    Hebrews 12:1

  511. verse 1.

  512. There are minor differences

  513. in the way this verse

  514. is translated,

  515. but I want you to look

  516. in particular

  517. at what it says there.

  518. And the sin

  519. which clings so closely.

  520. King James says

  521. the sin that does

  522. so easily beset.

  523. And one of the things

  524. that I would understand

  525. is that sin does cling

  526. closely to all of us,

  527. but there are some sins

  528. that cling more closely

  529. to one of us

  530. than the other of us.

  531. Let me give you

  532. a couple of illustrations.

  533. Satan did not use wine

  534. or the barber chair

  535. to get Samson.

  536. Do you understand that?

  537. But Satan had Samson

  538. figured out, didn't he?

  539. Satan had Samson figured out.

  540. And from early on

  541. in Samson's life,

  542. he began to show

  543. a pattern of immorality,

  544. and at the end of the day,

  545. it was his lack

  546. of discretion

  547. and obedience

  548. to the Scripture

  549. in relationship

  550. to the matter

  551. of immorality

  552. that led him

  553. to give away

  554. the secret.

  555. And he ended up

  556. having his eyes

  557. poked out.

  558. Lot didn't fall

  559. to the wiles

  560. of a seductive woman.

  561. Do you realize that?

  562. Lot was not snared

  563. the same way

  564. that Samson was.

  565. Lot wanted prominence.

  566. Lot wanted property.

  567. Lot wanted significance,

  568. and he was willing

  569. to put himself

  570. wherever it would pay out

  571. to his advantage.

  572. There's some of you

  573. sitting here this morning

  574. that in the course

  575. of your lifetime

  576. are going to find

  577. over and over again

  578. that Satan is going

  579. to tempt you

  580. with certain advantages

  581. and certain advances

  582. in your career

  583. that seem on the surface

  584. they make sense,

  585. but they draw you

  586. closer to the

  587. pit

  588. and to Sodom

  589. and Gomorrah.

  590. Judas

  591. was never tempted

  592. that we know of

  593. by immorality,

  594. by drunkenness.

  595. He was never tempted

  596. by some of the things

  597. that some of you

  598. sitting out here

  599. this morning

  600. have found yourself

  601. in conflict with

  602. over and over again,

  603. but I want you

  604. to understand

  605. that it tells us

  606. that Satan got

  607. the best of Judas

  608. and his life

  609. was destroyed

  610. by the temptations

  611. that came.

  612. So here's the deal.

  613. If you're wondering

  614. what Satan may have

  615. in your file

  616. as shortcuts

  617. to attacking Tim

  618. or shortcuts

  619. to attacking

  620. Brenda

  621. or whatever,

  622. you know,

  623. here's how you can

  624. kind of figure it out.

  625. Find out

  626. where you've fallen

  627. most often.

  628. Do you follow that?

  629. And by this time,

  630. most of you here

  631. are old enough

  632. to have had enough

  633. recurring incidents

  634. in particular areas

  635. where you say,

  636. ah,

  637. I'm a guppy there.

  638. How many of you

  639. follow what I'm saying?

  640. It's like,

  641. got me again.

  642. If you're a

  643. repetitious powder,

  644. do you know

  645. what a repetitious powder is?

  646. Everybody smile.

  647. It's someone

  648. who does it often.

  649. Or if you're

  650. a person

  651. who is often

  652. offended,

  653. easily offended.

  654. You know what an individual

  655. is who's easily offended?

  656. They're constantly,

  657. somebody's got them

  658. worked up about something.

  659. Or if you're a person

  660. who finds yourself

  661. snared by

  662. subtle suggestions

  663. to immorality

  664. over and over again.

  665. Or you're just not

  666. satisfied with

  667. the things that God's

  668. provided.

  669. I don't know what it is.

  670. If you find yourself

  671. in this repetitious pattern,

  672. here's what you can figure out.

  673. Satan's got your number.

  674. He's got it.

  675. Now,

  676. I want you to recognize

  677. something else

  678. in this passage.

  679. He has

  680. a strategy.

  681. But I also want you

  682. to understand

  683. that this warfare

  684. is not about

  685. us or others.

  686. It's really stunning

  687. to stop for a moment

  688. and look at what it says

  689. there in verse 12.

  690. It says,

  691. For we do not wrestle

  692. against flesh and blood.

  693. You know what most of us

  694. believe?

  695. Honestly,

  696. truthfully,

  697. we believe that the

  698. biggest problems

  699. we have in our life

  700. are what?

  701. Other people.

  702. Huh?

  703. Other people.

  704. In fact,

  705. you wouldn't want

  706. to do it publicly,

  707. but the truth

  708. of the matter is

  709. if I ask you

  710. to make a short

  711. mental list

  712. of who you really

  713. would like God

  714. to change,

  715. you're not first

  716. on the list.

  717. Not because you are

  718. so spiritually perceptive,

  719. but because you're

  720. so dull.

  721. Now,

  722. there it is.

  723. For we do not wrestle

  724. against flesh and blood.

  725. What?

  726. Well,

  727. that is the Bible,

  728. so I've got to trust it.

  729. Okay.

  730. And it says,

  731. But against the rulers,

  732. against the authorities,

  733. against the cosmic powers

  734. over this present darkness,

  735. against the spiritual forces

  736. of evil in the heavenly places.

  737. Now,

  738. this Bible verse

  739. is not undermining

  740. the doctrine

  741. of the battle

  742. we have with indwelling sin,

  743. and I've got enough

  744. problems with me.

  745. But the Bible tells me

  746. there's an enemy

  747. that I have

  748. that's out to destroy me.

  749. Out to harm me.

  750. Out to ruin my life.

  751. I've shared with you before

  752. that there was a time

  753. in my life

  754. where,

  755. largely because of

  756. my own sin,

  757. Judith and I went through

  758. an incredibly difficult time.

  759. And in that time,

  760. I remember

  761. how close I came,

  762. this is the truth,

  763. to one sin after another.

  764. I was almost overwhelmed

  765. by a desire for revenge.

  766. I was almost overwhelmed

  767. by anger and bitterness.

  768. It consumed me.

  769. I had an hour drive to work,

  770. and I can tell you that

  771. somewhere along,

  772. about 30 minutes into that drive,

  773. I would often,

  774. by the way,

  775. how many of you know

  776. that I'm an emotional person?

  777. I can get worked up,

  778. you know,

  779. it's like,

  780. about 30 minutes into the drive,

  781. I was crying,

  782. driving my pickup truck,

  783. and slamming the metal dashboard.

  784. This was before

  785. people had the intelligence

  786. to wrap dashboards

  787. with something

  788. a little more protective,

  789. you know.

  790. And my thumb,

  791. my back of my hand

  792. was black and blue,

  793. you know.

  794. I was beating that dashboard

  795. in my,

  796. and I remember one day

  797. kind of stopping,

  798. pulling over to the side

  799. of the road,

  800. and said,

  801. what is going on?

  802. And out of the clear blue,

  803. my Aunt Lou,

  804. who's with the Lord now,

  805. called me.

  806. She said,

  807. Tim,

  808. don't give in

  809. to bitterness.

  810. And when Aunt Lou

  811. told me that,

  812. I thought she had a right

  813. to tell me,

  814. because I knew

  815. how she had trashed

  816. her life

  817. because she'd given in

  818. to sin.

  819. Paul says to us,

  820. he says,

  821. listen,

  822. the problem you're having

  823. is not people.

  824. You have an enemy

  825. who wants

  826. to destroy

  827. your soul.

  828. I want you to understand

  829. that

  830. the Bible wants us

  831. to understand

  832. that this is

  833. spiritual warfare.

  834. It was spiritual warfare

  835. that destroyed Samson.

  836. It was spiritual warfare

  837. that just absolutely

  838. trashed Saul's life

  839. and David's family

  840. and Solomon's life

  841. and caused Ahab's death.

  842. By the way,

  843. not have you go there,

  844. but you'll remember

  845. the little passage

  846. where Ahab the king

  847. is kind of debating

  848. whether he ought to go

  849. to battle with another king,

  850. and we get a picture

  851. into heaven,

  852. you know how that's going,

  853. and in heaven,

  854. God says,

  855. well,

  856. I wonder how we can

  857. deal with Ahab,

  858. and a little devil

  859. comes up and says,

  860. hey,

  861. how about I do this?

  862. And it worked.

  863. Remember also

  864. when Jesus

  865. says to Peter,

  866. he says,

  867. hey,

  868. Satan has desire

  869. to sift you.

  870. Satan wants

  871. to trash your life,

  872. Peter.

  873. And then some

  874. of the sweetest verses

  875. in the Bible,

  876. but I have prayed

  877. for you.

  878. I love that one.

  879. I have prayed

  880. for you.

  881. So what is

  882. our spiritual

  883. enemy's

  884. strategy?

  885. Now remember

  886. I said that he is

  887. insanely repetitious?

  888. So if you get it

  889. right from the beginning,

  890. you should be able

  891. to figure out

  892. how it goes.

  893. Does that help you

  894. a little bit?

  895. It doesn't mean

  896. that you can fight

  897. this battle

  898. on your own,

  899. but at least

  900. if he is strategic

  901. and he has

  902. a settled plan

  903. to go about it,

  904. you ought to know

  905. how that goes.

  906. So turn in your Bible

  907. as we close

  908. to Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  909. Genesis chapter 3,

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  910. and I'm going to tag

  911. four quick points.

  912. In Genesis chapter 3,

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  913. we have the story

  914. of Adam and Eve

  915. falling into sin,

  916. and let me just kind

  917. of spin this out

  918. quickly for you.

  919. Number one,

  920. he came in created form.

  921. Now the serpent

  922. was more crafty

  923. than any other beast

  924. of the field

  925. that the Lord God

  926. had made.

  927. He said to the woman,

  928. did God actually say,

  929. now who do we know

  930. is actually employing

  931. the serpent?

  932. Who is it?

  933. It's Satan.

  934. The strategies of Satan.

  935. He uses physical entities

  936. and physical circumstances.

  937. And by the way,

  938. he won't come with horns.

  939. I tell you,

  940. I've had more people

  941. tell me,

  942. well, it was an open door.

  943. Have you ever heard that one?

  944. It was an open door.

  945. I'll never forget

  946. hearing a pastor say

  947. that when the door

  948. pushes open,

  949. you want to find out

  950. whether the hoof is cloven

  951. or the hand has a nail

  952. pinned in it.

  953. Do you follow that?

  954. I want to know

  955. who's behind that.

  956. He came in created form,

  957. and he will attack you

  958. using people

  959. as his agents.

  960. And by the way,

  961. I wouldn't go up

  962. to your wife

  963. the next time

  964. she's not cooperating

  965. with you and say,

  966. you are Satan's instrument.

  967. Not a good idea.

  968. Follow that.

  969. I know some of you

  970. are going to try it.

  971. It's not a good career path.

  972. I speak with experience.

  973. Your wife is God's agent.

  974. She's there to help.

  975. So,

  976. God's going to use people.

  977. Admit that.

  978. Secondly,

  979. he came with a challenge

  980. to God's Word.

  981. He came with a challenge

  982. to God's Word.

  983. He said,

  984. did God actually say?

  985. He's going to do that

  986. with you.

  987. Incidentally,

  988. if you're largely ignorant

  989. about God's Word

  990. and what it has to say,

  991. you are even more vulnerable.

  992. Do you follow that?

  993. God has given us

  994. His Word

  995. for our protection.

  996. So,

  997. Satan comes to you

  998. and said,

  999. did God really say

  1000. and some of you

  1001. are sitting there,

  1002. I don't know.

  1003. I'm not real sure.

  1004. Well,

  1005. you leave it open

  1006. for Satan

1007. to help you figure out

1008. the way he wants you

  1009. to figure it out.

  1010. Know the Word.

  1011. Know the Scriptures.

1012. Know what it has to say.

1013. And don't be sitting there

  1014. just kind of thinking,

  1015. well,

  1016. no big deal.

1017. Let me tell you something.

  1018. The Word

  1019. is your great ally

  1020. in helping you

  1021. not be overwhelmed

  1022. by the enemy

  1023. of your soul.

  1024. Third,

1025. He came with a denial

  1026. of God's warning.

  1027. Now,

1028. look at what it says there.

  1029. Verse 4,

  1030. but the serpent said

  1031. to the woman,

1032. you will not surely die.

  1033. Now,

  1034. listen,

  1035. if you don't catch

  1036. anything else,

1037. I want you to understand this.

1038. God tells us the truth

1039. about how the story ends.

1040. I want you to hear that.

1041. God is in the business

  1042. of being truthful.

  1043. He'll tell you

  1044. how the story ends.

  1045. Satan doesn't do that.

  1046. He will tell you

1047. that if you trust in Him,

  1048. your life

  1049. will be spent

  1050. in His presence

  1051. in all of eternity,

  1052. and the end

  1053. will be good

  1054. even though

  1055. the journey

  1056. will be tough.

  1057. I can't help

  1058. but think this morning

  1059. about

  1060. a Chinese couple

  1061. that Judith and I

1062. picked up at the airport

  1063. about three years ago

1064. and brought to our home,

  1065. and subsequently

  1066. they came to Christ.

1067. They're living in China today.

  1068. He's a PhD.

  1069. His specialty

  1070. is in

  1071. computer

  1072. software.

  1073. Always a little curious

  1074. what he did

  1075. for the government,

  1076. but I won't go there.

  1077. You know,

  1078. he got saved.

  1079. His wife got saved.

  1080. How many

  1081. good Christian churches

  1082. do you think

  1083. he can find

  1084. in the gargantuan country

  1085. where he's set?

  1086. Not very many.

  1087. His name,

  1088. English name

  1089. is Sam.

  1090. His wife's name

  1091. is Alice.

  1092. Daughter is Ariel.

1093. I still hear from them.

  1094. You know what?

  1095. Life here,

1096. regardless of where we are,

1097. is going to be short.

  1098. And God tells us

1099. that those who trust in Him

  1100. will enjoy eternity

  1101. forever in His presence.

  1102. Satan says,

  1103. hey,

1104. it's not going to work out

  1105. that way.

  1106. No,

1107. God tells us the truth.

  1108. Fourth,

1109. he came with a denial

  1110. of God's goodness

  1111. and God's heart.

  1112. You see,

  1113. Satan always lies

  1114. about not only

  1115. how the story ends,

  1116. but he also lies

  1117. about God's intentions

  1118. and His challenge

  1119. in your life.

  1120. Do you follow that?

  1121. Oh.

  1122. Chasing that boy

1123. is going to end up good

1124. even if he is an unbeliever.

1125. Even if you ought not

  1126. to be involved

  1127. in that behavior.

  1128. Lying

  1129. about something

  1130. at work

  1131. is going to protect

  1132. your job

  1133. and you'll

  1134. come out ahead.

  1135. Just being a little

  1136. dishonest

  1137. is to your benefit.

  1138. Being involved

  1139. in

  1140. personal gratification

  1141. is

  1142. understandable.

  1143. in every step,

  1144. Satan lies

  1145. about God's goodness

  1146. in his heart

  1147. and you can track

  1148. every one

  1149. of your temptations

  1150. back to those things.

  1151. So,

1152. let me close with this.

  1153. Satan is

  1154. a strategist

  1155. who's out

  1156. to trash

  1157. your life.

  1158. Everybody here

  1159. would say,

  1160. I got that.

  1161. Right?

  1162. I got that.

  1163. And,

  1164. he has a strategy

  1165. actually that's got

  1166. you in mind.

  1167. I got that.

  1168. how can you tell

  1169. where he's

  1170. working

  1171. by repetition?

  1172. Hmm?

  1173. How do you

  1174. then respond

  1175. to this passage?

  1176. what you do

  1177. is say,

  1178. if you love me

  1179. enough to tell me

  1180. about the adversary

  1181. and how he wants

  1182. to destroy me,

  1183. then I

  1184. should

  1185. respond

  1186. with

  1187. defensive,

  1188. protective

  1189. covering

  1190. in the

  1191. ministry

  1192. of the

  1193. Word of God

  1194. and in the

  1195. Spirit of God

  1196. that I am

  1197. not a

  1198. spiritual

  1199. casualty

  1200. going forward.

  1201. Listen to me.

  1202. You're going to

  1203. fall into

  1204. one of three

  1205. categories this

  1206. morning and I'll

  1207. close with this.

  1208. There are going

1209. to be some of you

  1210. here that through

  1211. the prompting of

  1212. the Spirit of God

  1213. you're going to

  1214. say,

  1215. I don't want to

  1216. keep on being

  1217. a spiritual

  1218. casualty to

  1219. an enemy who

  1220. hates my soul.

  1221. I know

  1222. Jesus.

  1223. and I want

  1224. to take

  1225. spiritual

  1226. conflict and

  1227. spiritual warfare

  1228. more seriously

  1229. and I am

  1230. prayerfully going

  1231. to humble

  1232. myself and

  1233. say,

  1234. Lord Jesus,

  1235. work in me

  1236. through your

  1237. Spirit to

  1238. teach me

  1239. all that I

  1240. need so that

  1241. I am not

  1242. being bulldozed

  1243. by my

  1244. enemy.

  1245. There are going

  1246. to be some of

  1247. you sitting here

  1248. right now saying,

  1249. I wish this

  1250. sermon would be

  1251. over so I

  1252. could leave

  1253. because I

  1254. just really,

  1255. it gives me

  1256. the creeps to

  1257. listen to this

  1258. and there are

  1259. some of you

  1260. sitting here

  1261. that do not

  1262. know Christ

  1263. who someday

  1264. will stand

  1265. before him

  1266. as the judge

  1267. of the whole

  1268. earth

  1269. and he will

  1270. say this,

  1271. I died to

  1272. pay the

  1273. penalty for

  1274. your sins

  1275. and I

  1276. made the

  1277. issue of

  1278. the darkness

  1279. of your soul

  1280. clear

  1281. and you

  1282. in your

  1283. pride

  1284. hung all

  1285. kinds of

  1286. excuses

  1287. around the

  1288. subject of

  1289. your soul's

  1290. need

  1291. and I

  1292. think about

  1293. what it

  1294. says in

  1295. 2nd

  1296. Corinthians

  1297. it says

  1298. we in

  1299. Christ's

  1300. stead

  1301. plead

  1302. with you

  1303. be

  1304. reconciled

  1305. to Christ

  1306. and if

  1307. you're here

  1308. this morning

  1309. and you do

  1310. not know

  1311. Jesus Christ

  1312. I would

  1313. plead with

  1314. you in

  1315. Jesus'

  1316. place

  1317. lay aside

  1318. your pride

  1319. and your

  1320. stubbornness

  1321. and quietly

  1322. confess the

  1323. bankruptcy

  1324. of your

  1325. soul

  1326. and say

  1327. I believe

  1328. Jesus died

  1329. for my

  1330. sins

  1331. and I

  1332. trust him

  1333. to be my

  1334. savior

  1335. let's close

  1336. in prayer

  1337. our

  1338. father

  1339. God

  1340. we are

  1341. so very

  1342. thankful

  1343. for the

  1344. blessing

  1345. of your

  1346. word

  1347. and

  1348. for the

  1349. clarity

  1350. with which

  1351. you tell

  1352. us

  1353. that

  1354. we

  1355. as

  1356. your

  1357. children

  1358. do

  1359. have

  1360. an

  1361. enemy

  1362. who

  1363. wants

  1364. to

  1365. harm

  1366. us

  1367. but

  1368. thank

  1369. you

  1370. so

  1371. very

  1372. much

  1373. that

  1374. you

  1375. have

  1376. given

  1377. us

  1378. salvation

  1379. through

  1380. the

  1381. Lord

  1382. Jesus

  1383. and

  1384. you

  1385. have

  1386. given

  1387. us

  1388. protection

  1389. and

  1390. enabling

  1391. through

  1392. the

  1393. word

  1394. of

  1395. God

  1396. and

  1397. the

  1398. sweet

  1399. spirit

  1400. that

  1401. dwells

  1402. within

  1403. and

  1404. help

  1405. us

  1406. to

  1407. be

  1408. a

  1409. people

  1410. that

  1411. are

  1412. well

  1413. armed

  1414. and

  1415. really

  1416. sensitive

  1417. to

  1418. this

  1419. battle

  1420. so

  1421. that

  1422. we

  1423. may

  1424. live

  1425. joyful

  1426. productive

  1427. lives

  1428. for the

  1429. brief

  1430. time

  1431. that

  1432. we're

  1433. here

  1434. for

  1435. the

  1436. sake

  1437. of

  1438. the

  1439. King

  1440. we

  1441. ask

  1442. this

  1443. in

  1444. your

  1445. precious

  1446. name

  1447. Amen

  1448. we're

  1449. going
