  1. Let me have you turn in your Bibles this evening or this morning to Ephesians chapter 6, verse 18.

    Ephesians 6:18

  2. !

  3. Praying always, praying at all times in the Spirit.

  4. Let's do just that.

  5. Heavenly Father, as we come this morning to take your Word in hand, we are thankful that

  6. we who know the Lord Jesus Christ may ask you to work in us through your Holy Spirit, who

  7. you have given to us, that as the psalmist prayed, that your Word would be opened that

  8. we might see wonderful truths in it.

  9. And we ask this because of Jesus.

  10. I'll tell you at the beginning that I am not going to cover the whole verse.

  11. I am going to leave the remainder for your studies personally.

  12. I think we have spent a fair amount of time in Ephesians chapter 6 beginning in verse 10 and carrying down here to 18.

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  13. And I trust you are not overly labored by the fact that I'm going to leave the second half of the verse because as we study the first half you will find it to be supremely important.

  14. And I trust its value plays out in your life as a result.

  15. Let me say ahead of time that I have a goal or objective that I think fits the Scriptures and it is this.

  16. That as the result of the teaching and preaching of the Word of God with the enabling of the Spirit that your prayer life...

  17. I mean there should be an outcome to preaching.

  18. Would you agree with that?

  19. That your prayer life is improved.

  20. When I say that our prayer life is improved I suppose everybody is sitting here well okay that's alright.

  21. Let me say that if I were to begin this sermon on the subject of prayer and start out by confessing that prayer is one of those areas in my life that I'm still working at you'd probably not be all that bothered.

  22. Would you agree with me?

  23. Last week as I was sitting with my father in the nursing home out of the clear blue he said to me,

  24. Tim, what's your greatest challenge?

  25. Well I have to confess that I have a fair share of them.

  26. Being me is really hard.

  27. And I remember after I thought for a moment I said, Dad my prayer life is my greatest challenge.

  28. And I know my dad prays for me.

  29. Even though he has Alzheimer's and has moments where probably his lucidity is not as sharp and acute as it should be.

  30. Nevertheless, I know he prays for me because when I would come in following that he would talk to me about his prayers for me.

  31. And I tell you that when I stand up here to preach on the matter of prayer and I say to you,

  32. that's an area that I have some challenge and difficulty in.

  33. It probably doesn't faze you but to help you understand and make a comparison.

  34. Listen, were I to come this morning to this pulpit and say,

  35. I am going to preach this morning about drunkenness and I would say,

  36. and I'm having a real problem with it.

  37. You'd probably say, well who are you to talk to me about that?

  38. Right?

  39. Or if I were to come up here this morning and say,

  40. I am here to preach this morning about moral purity and I'm just not on top of that one.

  41. That would be very unsettling to you, wouldn't it?

  42. Agreed?

  43. Yes.

  44. When I come to you this morning and say, listen, prayer is the area in my life that I continue to work at

  45. and I need his help.

  46. The fact of the matter is, is that you identify so closely with me because your lives are struggling with the same thing.

  47. And I want us this morning to understand just how important it is that our prayer life is governed and controlled

  48. and enabled by the Spirit of God.

  49. Ephesians chapter 6 beginning in verse 10 and carrying on down to verse 18 is really about spiritual warfare.

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  50. And we can get all caught up in the armor.

  51. But I want you to understand that this morning what we really are here to focus on is this matter of the priority of prayer.

  52. It is supremely important in the believer's life.

  53. When I was a young boy, you know, most of you know that I grew up as a missionary's child in India.

  54. And this was in the days, I remember when we went from New York to Bombay by ship.

  55. And on our first return from the field, it was a many weeks journey.

  56. We came by steamer and my parents were bound and determined to find the cheapest way to travel.

  57. And it was by some tramp steamer that made its way across the Indian Ocean and down.

  58. Actually went around the Cape of Good Hope.

  59. Can you imagine what that was like?

  60. And then came up.

  61. And eventually we landed somewhere in England.

  62. And then we journeyed and visited different missionaries in that area.

  63. And one of the things that my parents were bound and determined is that I should grow up with a little bit of enculturation.

  64. And so they took me to every conceivable place that had historic significance.

  65. One museum after another.

  66. I was intrigued by one particular thing in museums.

  67. I was always intrigued by the military parts of those museums, you know.

  68. I'd want to go out and put my hands on the cannons and look at these great big balls that they shot out of those cannons.

  69. And you'd walk through the museum and you would see these suits of armor.

  70. I was just enthralled by suits of armor.

  71. I thought, man, when I grow up I want to wear one of those things.

  72. In fact, I'll remember my parents actually gave me a little bit of pocket money.

  73. And I spent all of my pocket money on a piece of aluminum, briefly, very flimsy.

  74. It was a breastplate.

  75. It looked like armor.

  76. You know, it's shiny.

  77. And my brother and I played with those things until I, being much older than him at that point and larger than him,

  78. I could take significant advantage of him.

  79. So we stopped doing those things.

  80. You know, sword fighting is pretty dangerous when you're big and, you know.

  81. But I just loved the idea of armor.

  82. And, you know, you'd walk through these museums and you'd see these great big suits of armor.

  83. And I have to tell you, I thought, these are pretty neat.

  84. This is nifty.

  85. This is nice.

  86. You know, they didn't frighten me at all.

  87. They didn't bother me.

  88. But I want you to imagine that if in the ancient world some great big hulking knight had put on that suit of armor,

  89. armor, and torn out after a set of serfs in a village, it would have been pretty terrifying, wouldn't it?

  90. You see, it's not the armor itself that makes all the difference in the world.

  91. It is the person who's inside it and the one who gives the armor its energy that makes the difference.

  92. And so this morning as we think about the subject of the believer being well-armed against the enemy,

  93. I want you to understand at the very outset that the Holy Spirit wants us to get a grip on the fact that our battle is not our own and that we must have his help.

  94. That's what we're looking at this morning when at the conclusion of this lengthy passage on the subject of spiritual warfare,

  95. the Spirit of God says there in verse 18,

  96. praying at all times in the Spirit.

  97. I want you to go back just for a moment, if you will, back to verse 10.

  98. And pick up, if you will, there the argument that Paul begins.

  99. He says,

  100. Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.

  101. Be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.

  102. As Paul brings this wonderful book to a conclusion,

  103. he wants us to understand that we are going to face adversity and difficulty

  104. and we have an adversary that is very interested in our harm and our destruction

  105. and if we are going to endure and we're going to survive his attacks,

  106. we can't do it on our own.

  107. And so verse 10 is the beginning of the argument

  108. and verse 18 is the conclusion.

  109. There is a sense in which you have bookends in which at the beginning and the end of Paul's argument,

  110. he helps us understand that this battle is not our own.

  111. I trust that as we've worked our way through Ephesians chapter 6

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  112. and dealt with this matter of spiritual warfare,

  113. that you've not been all caught up in the armor and the details

  114. and forget that spiritual armor without the spirit is worthless.

  115. You can actually have a head full of Bible verses.

  116. You can have a firm grip on some of the theological truths that are foundational to us.

  117. You can know every point about the nature of God.

  118. You could be ready to pass a theology exam

  119. and the truth of the matter is,

  120. is you could still be readily overcome by the enemy

  121. because in the face of all the information that you've gathered,

  122. you really don't have a dependence upon the spirit

  123. and the enemy loves when you're in that condition.

  124. And so Paul begins to tell us here at the beginning in verse 10

  125. that our strength must be in the Lord

  126. and here at the end,

  127. he highlights the fact that our spiritual strength is inseparable from our prayer life.

  128. Our spiritual strength is inseparable from our prayer life.

  129. And so he makes this statement, he says,

  130. praying at all times in the spirit.

  131. And his emphasis here is on the centrality of prayer in spiritual living

  132. and he wants us to recognize that this is a foundational matter

  133. for every one of you as believers.

  134. Prayer is really at the center of spiritual living and success

  135. and apart from prayer,

  136. we are just an accident looking for a place to happen.

  137. Can I say that again slowly so you understand it?

  138. Apart from prayer,

  139. we are just an accident looking for a place to happen.

  140. So how important is prayer in the Bible?

  141. Just touch on a few illustrations.

  142. I could spend the remainder of our time

  143. going through one after another,

  144. but let's pick up on several that make it clear

  145. that prayer for the believer is absolutely essential.

  146. Turn in your Bible back to Exodus chapter 17.

    Exodus 17 chapter mention

  147. Exodus chapter 17.

    Exodus 17 chapter mention

  148. This is early in the Exodus

  149. when God took the nation of Israel out of Egypt

  150. and he was taking them on their journey

  151. to the promised land

  152. where they were going to be involved in conflict.

  153. Earlier, actually, in Exodus,

  154. we are told that God did not take them the short route

  155. because they had not been toughened up

  156. and they had to endure some hardship

  157. and difficulty in battle

  158. so that when they came into the land of promise,

  159. which they were going to have to capture with their sword,

  160. they were ready for the conflict.

  161. Here in Exodus chapter 17,

    Exodus 17 chapter mention

  162. we find one of their early battles.

  163. And if you pick up there in verse 9,

  164. we read that,

  165. So Moses said to Joshua,

  166. Choose for us men and go out and fight with Amalek.

  167. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill

  168. with the staff of God in my hand.

  169. Now, sometimes those who are generals

  170. are distantly removed from the battle

  171. and do you know why they're distantly removed?

  172. They don't want to risk being caught and killed.

  173. That was not the reason that Moses did what he did.

  174. And as we read through the passage,

  175. we discovered that what happened

  176. is that while Moses had his hands lifted up,

  177. what was going on with the battle down there

  178. on the plain with the people of Amalek?

  179. The nation of Israel was enduring.

  180. They were succeeding.

  181. They were being victorious.

  182. And Moses eventually got tired

  183. and he put his hands down.

  184. And as soon as he put his hands down,

  185. what happened with the conflict?

  186. The nation of Israel began to suffer.

  187. And Moses, seeing this,

  188. he learned that there was something going on

  189. that was directly connected with his time of prayer

  190. and his hands being lifted up

  191. for the people that were down there in the conflict.

  192. And as a result of that,

  193. what we have is that Aaron and Hur

  194. grabbed a stone,

  195. had Moses sit down on the stone,

  196. and then they stood on either side

  197. and had Moses' arms up in the air.

  198. And as a result,

  199. the people of Israel succeeded in the battle.

  200. Why?

  201. Because of prayer.

  202. I'm reminded also of what we read over in 1 Kings 17-18.

  203. You don't need to turn to that passage.

  204. But if you would remember,

  205. in 1 Kings 17-18,

  206. we're given a little picture of the power of prayer

  207. because it tells us that Elijah prayed,

  208. and it tells us in the book of James

  209. that for three years it...

  210. Does anybody know what happened?

  211. It didn't rain.

  212. It didn't rain.

  213. And God uses that

  214. to bring Ahab and all the nation together,

  215. and they end up on top of this mountain,

  216. and here is Elijah and the prophets of Baal,

  217. and they're having this little contest,

  218. and Elijah prays down fire from heaven,

  219. and then he prays rain into the nation.

  220. And it tells us over in that passage in James

  221. that it was because of his prayer

  222. that these things took place.

  223. I'm reminded also of what Jesus taught his disciples

  224. on the matter of prayer

  225. and our dependence upon him.

  226. And over in John chapter 15, verse 5,

    John 15:5

  227. there's a passage that I trust

  228. is just woven into your life.

  229. Without me, you can do what?

  230. You can do nothing.

  231. So I want you to think just for a moment this morning

  232. of just how important,

  233. how significant the matter of prayer is

  234. in your life as a believer,

  235. and recognize that here you are,

  236. you are faced with the reality

  237. that you have a spiritual enemy

  238. that is desperately determined to destroy you.

  239. And it's not the armor in itself

  240. that is by itself that essential.

  241. Apart from prayer, it's just a suit.

  242. And there are some of you here this morning

  243. that as I, as your shepherd,

  244. as your pastor, think about your life,

  245. I am aware of some of the heartache

  246. and the difficulties,

  247. and as I look at what's going on in your life,

  248. one of the things that I would plead with you

  249. is that your prayer life would change

  250. so that you're not harmed as you have been.

  251. I want you to understand

  252. that your enemy is after you.

  253. And I want you to understand

  254. that prayer must be your heart's great defense.

  255. Well, let's stop and think about the passage

  256. because it says they're praying.

  257. Praying.

  258. I don't need to break down the issue of prayer for you

  259. because you understand what it means.

  260. It is coming to the Lord

  261. with a dependence upon Him.

  262. It is coming with a recognition

  263. of the promises that He's made.

  264. It is coming believing that He is,

  265. as it says in Hebrews chapter 11,

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  266. He is and He is the one who is the rewarder

  267. of those that do diligently seek Him.

  268. You understand what prayer is.

  269. So let's think a little bit

  270. about what it says there.

  271. It says that at all times,

  272. we're to pray at all times.

  273. That little word always,

  274. or at all times,

  275. as we have it in the ESV,

  276. is a word that is talking

  277. not so much about the length of time.

  278. There are two different ways

  279. that time is used in the Greek here.

  280. One is talking about the length of time.

  281. Like, I prayed for 39 minutes.

  282. That's not what's being said.

  283. It is talking about praying

  284. at all kinds of circumstances,

  285. all kinds of settings,

  286. all kinds of moments.

  287. And it's recognizing that praying 10 minutes

  288. or reciting the Lord's Prayer for 20 times

  289. or whatever is,

  290. is not what is in view here.

  291. It is talking about the fact

  292. that every setting

  293. and every circumstance,

  294. every issue in your life

  295. is worthy of prayer.

  296. prayer.

  297. So when should we pray?

  298. For one,

  299. we should pray

  300. when we are being tempted.

  301. I want you to remember

  302. what Jesus said to His disciples

  303. in Matthew chapter 26, verse 41.

    Matthew 26:41

  304. He, knowing what was coming,

  305. went off to pray.

  306. And He made statement to them.

  307. He said,

  308. listen, pray

  309. that you enter not into temptation.

  310. And so let me ask you the question,

  311. how often are you challenged

  312. and tempted by the enemy?

  313. Is it something that only happens

  314. very rarely and occasionally,

  315. or is it something that is incessant?

  316. I know that it's incessant

  317. because it happens to me.

  318. It happens to you.

  319. My temptation may not be the same

  320. as your temptation,

  321. and some of the things

  322. that you are battling with

  323. may be completely different

  324. from the things I am enduring.

  325. But here's the truth of the matter.

  326. All of us are tempted

  327. incessantly by the enemy

  328. who is interested

  329. in our demise

  330. and our harm.

  331. And so what we should do

  332. is be people

  333. that are praying all the time.

  334. All the time.

  335. We should pray

  336. before we open our mouth.

  337. We should pray

  338. before we open our mouth.

  339. I want you to turn back

  340. in your Bible

  341. just for a second

  342. to Nehemiah chapter 2.

    Nehemiah 2 chapter mention

  343. Look at verse 4.

  344. Nehemiah chapter 2 verse 4.

    Nehemiah 2:4

  345. By the way,

  346. if you've been tracking,

  347. we're teaching,

  348. we're studying the book

  349. of Nehemiah

  350. in Wednesday evening,

  351. but at the outset

  352. of the book,

  353. it starts out

  354. by Nehemiah discovering

  355. the condition

  356. of the nation of Israel,

  357. in particular,

  358. the city of Jerusalem,

  359. and we know

  360. that he had spent

  361. a long time

  362. in prayer

  363. for the condition

  364. of the city

  365. and what had happened

  366. to the people of God.

  367. I believe

  368. as a result

  369. of his incessant prayer

  370. that God opened the door

  371. and gave him

  372. an opportunity

  373. to present his concern

  374. to the king.

  375. He'd prayed

  376. for a long time.

  377. He'd been fasting.

  378. Weeks had passed.

  379. It had been front

  380. and center

  381. on his life,

  382. but the moment

  383. that the king

  384. asked him,

  385. what is it

  386. that you would like,

  387. do you know

  388. what he did first?

  389. He took a second

  390. and he prayed

  391. one of those

  392. bullet prayers.

  393. How many of you

  394. prayed a bullet prayer?

  395. A year and a,

  396. well,

  397. not last winter,

  398. the winter before last,

  399. I was driving

  400. in the city

  401. and I had come

  402. to a left-hand turn

  403. and there I was

  404. waiting.

  405. It had been snowing

  406. pretty bad

  407. and I am waiting

  408. at the stoplight

  409. for the opportunity

  410. to go.

  411. And there was a guy

  412. that came skating around

  413. making a,

  414. how was it,

  415. a left,

  416. a right-hand turn

  417. and as I'm watching him,

  418. it became quite evident

  419. that his tires

  420. were not going

  421. in the direction

  422. that he was cranking

  423. the wheel.

  424. I was actually

  425. at the stoplight

  426. talking to my wife

  427. saying,

  428. honey,

  429. I'll be home

  430. in a,

  431. I'm going to have

  432. a wreck.

  433. Do you follow that?

  434. And I remember

  435. in that same frame

  436. saying,

  437. oh Lord.

  438. That's a short prayer.

  439. Do you understand that?

  440. Could anybody add

  441. a couple other words

  442. along with that?

  443. Oh Lord,

  444. help me to whatever.

  445. You know,

  446. it's like,

  447. those are known

  448. as bullet prayers.

  449. It's like,

  450. help me.

  451. So when should you pray?

  452. How many of you

  453. would admit

  454. that you would be

  455. well served

  456. if you never opened

  457. your mouth

  458. without praying first?

  459. James tells us

  460. that the tongue

  461. is the toughest

  462. thing to handle.

  463. Am I right?

  464. And so,

  465. I would encourage you,

  466. when should you pray?

  467. Well,

  468. pray when you are tempted.

  469. Pray when you are tempted

  470. to open your mouth.

  471. Pray instead of fretting.

  472. I want you to look

  473. in your passage,

  474. in your Bible,

  475. to Philippians chapter 4,

    Philippians 4:4–7

  476. verse 4 through 7.

  477. When should I pray?

  478. I should pray

  479. when I am tempted

  480. to fret.

  481. And some of us

  482. are better fretters

  483. than others.

  484. We have more practice.

  485. But listen to what it says

  486. there in Philippians

    Philippians 4:4

  487. chapter 4,

  488. verse 4.

  489. He says this,

  490. he says,

  491. rejoice in the Lord always,

  492. and again I say rejoice.

  493. How many of you

  494. really enjoy

  495. being around grumpy Christians?

  496. You know what

  497. a grumpy Christian is like?

  498. It's one of those persons

  499. who,

  500. you know,

  501. everything is just

  502. not going well

  503. and they're kind of

  504. frowny and unhappy

  505. and,

  506. you know,

  507. they've missed

  508. the truth,

  509. the sweet blessing

  510. of their relationship.

  511. Well,

  512. we're reminded here

  513. in Philippians,

  514. it says,

  515. hey,

  516. rejoice in the Lord.

  517. Verse 5,

  518. it says,

  519. let your reasonableness

  520. be known to everyone.

  521. The Lord is at hand.

  522. And then verse 6,

  523. do not be anxious

  524. about anything.

  525. But in everything,

  526. by prayer and supplication

  527. with thanksgiving,

  528. let your requests

  529. be made known to God.

  530. So,

  531. when should we pray?

  532. That's the question

  533. that the Bible verse

  534. brings to our attention

  535. when it says,

  536. pray at all times.

  537. When should we pray?

  538. We should pray

  539. when we are tempted

  540. to fret,

  541. to be anxious.

  542. When else should we pray?

  543. We should pray

  544. at the start of our day.

  545. Isn't that right?

  546. The start of your day

  547. as you are waking up

  548. and you are beginning

  549. to ponder the things

  550. that lie in front of you

  551. and you're thinking

  552. through the responsibilities

  553. that you have

  554. and some of the challenges

  555. that you're facing,

  556. that's the time

  557. to come to the Lord

  558. in prayer and say,

  559. listen,

  560. I want you to be

  561. the one that I look to

  562. and I trust

  563. and I depend upon

  564. this morning

  565. rather than get caught up

  566. in my own thing.

  567. I'm reminded of what it says

  568. over in Luke chapter 18,

    Luke 18:1

  569. verse 1.

  570. Men ought always to pray

  571. and not faint.

  572. So,

  573. why don't you do this

  574. before you turn on the TV?

  575. Why don't you pray?

  576. Before you decide

  577. you're going to check Facebook,

  578. why don't you pray?

  579. Before you decide

  580. that you want to make

  581. some scuzzy little comment

  582. about somebody else's

  583. statement on Facebook,

  584. how many of you

  585. know what I'm talking about?

  586. I have deleted

  587. more of the brilliance

  588. that I have produced

  589. from this little pea brain

  590. that I've decided

  591. after the second read

  592. is like,

  593. that is not going

  594. to be good to say.

  595. How many of you there?

  596. Okay?

  597. It would probably be

  598. a little prophylactic

  599. or preventive

  600. just to pray

  601. before you even

  602. open Facebook, right?

  603. Go ahead and pray

  604. before you decide

  605. you're going to surf

  606. the internet.

  607. Go ahead and pray

  608. before you're going

  609. to indulge in that

  610. thinking,

  611. that bitterness

  612. or that irritation

  613. or you begin to fret

  614. about the way things

  615. are devolving in your life.

  616. Why don't you decide

  617. before you entertain that

  618. that you're going to pray?

  619. Why don't you pray

  620. before you decide

  621. that you'll refresh

  622. your memory

  623. with some of the hurts

  624. that you've endured

  625. from other people

  626. in the fellowship?

  627. So as we look

  628. at this part

  629. in the beginning,

  630. I want you to recognize

  631. that what the apostle

  632. is saying is that

  633. the prayer life

  634. of the believer

  635. is to be something

  636. that is robust

  637. and profound

  638. and covers

  639. the broad range

  640. of everything

  641. going on

  642. in our life.

  643. Praying always,

  644. all the time.

  645. But now let's come

  646. to the most important piece.

  647. Praying in the spirit

  648. is what Paul

  649. is very interested

  650. that we care for here.

  651. And so as we are

  652. addressing the issue

  653. of spiritual warfare,

  654. I want you to understand

  655. that as we come

  656. to this piece,

  657. we're talking about

  658. the very most important part

  659. in the equation,

  660. we are to pray

  661. in the spirit.

  662. We're instructed

  663. to pray

  664. through the enabling

  665. of the spirit of God

  666. and I cannot overstate

  667. the importance

  668. of doing so

  669. in the power

  670. of the spirit of God.

  671. Let me help you understand

  672. just how important

  673. it is that we live

  674. in the spirit,

  675. walk in the spirit,

  676. and rely upon the spirit

  677. for our daily spiritual life.

  678. You're in the book

  679. of Ephesians.

  680. Turn back just a little bit

  681. to Galatians chapter 5.

    Galatians 5 chapter mention

  682. In Galatians chapter 5,

    Galatians 5 chapter mention

  683. it says this,

  684. it says,

  685. I say,

  686. walk by the spirit

  687. and you will not gratify

  688. the desires of the flesh.

  689. Walk by the spirit

  690. and you will not gratify

  691. the desires of the flesh.

  692. Now, is the issue

  693. of gratifying

  694. the desires of the flesh

  695. a gender-specific problem?

  696. How many of you understood

  697. what I just said?

  698. Not at all.

  699. Men, women, boys, girls,

  700. all of us have issues

  701. where we are tempted

  702. by the enemy

  703. and we look to gratify

  704. the desires of the flesh.

  705. And what Paul says

  706. is that we are to walk

  707. by the spirit

  708. and we won't do that.

  709. So I want you

  710. to understand this morning

  711. that it makes sense

  712. that our prayer life

  713. should be utterly dependent

  714. upon the spirit of God.

  715. And I want you

  716. to ask yourself the question,

  717. is that what characterizes

  718. your prayer life?

  719. Let's stop

  720. and think carefully.

  721. Is spirit dependence

  722. the thing

  723. that characterizes

  724. your prayer life?

  725. Some of us

  726. are fairly good

  727. with prayer lists.

  728. How many of you understand

  729. that prayer lists

  730. are helpful?

  731. If we don't have prayer lists,

  732. guess what we're going

  733. to pray for generally?

  734. A little bit like this.

  735. Dear Jesus,

  736. help mommy and daddy.

  737. Help all the missionaries

  738. in the world.

  739. Help me to have a good day.

  740. Amen.

  741. Our prayers,

  742. if we don't have

  743. a list that's a little

  744. more robust

  745. and a little far thinking,

  746. a little further thinking,

  747. we tend to be

  748. pretty self-focused

  749. in our prayer life.

  750. Would you agree with that?

  751. Prayer lists help us

  752. to get a broader picture,

  753. but here's the danger

  754. of a prayer list.

  755. You can crank

  756. through your prayer list

  757. and never think

  758. one bit

  759. about how

  760. all of it

  761. makes sense.

  762. Have you ever done that?

  763. Have you ever prayed

  764. through your prayer list

  765. and when the end of the day,

  766. you just checked it off,

  767. but there was nothing

  768. really resonating?

  769. So what does

  770. praying in the spirit mean?

  771. Let me talk first of all

  772. about what it does not mean.

  773. Praying in the spirit

  774. does not mean

  775. mouthing

  776. an unintelligible

  777. collection

  778. of vowels

  779. and consonants.

  780. I have dear friends

  781. that are quite caught up

  782. in the supposed exercise

  783. of speaking in tongues.

  784. And I want to tell you

  785. with gentleness

  786. and clarity

  787. that the New Testament

  788. gift of tongues

  789. undeniably

  790. in the scriptures

  791. was the ability

  792. to communicate

  793. in other dialects.

  794. Interestingly enough,

  795. when the charismatic movement

  796. came back

  797. into popularity

  798. in the early 20th century,

  799. that was like 1916

  800. or something like that,

  801. at Azusa Street Mission,

  802. those who began teaching

  803. the issue

  804. of the charismatic

  805. gift of tongues

  806. made the supposition

  807. that the gift

  808. was actually

  809. the ability

  810. to speak

  811. dialects

  812. or foreign languages.

  813. And as a result,

  814. this is history,

  815. this is fact,

  816. they sent out

  817. a wave of missionaries

  818. without any language

  819. training.

  820. Now,

  821. it makes sense,

  822. do you follow me?

  823. It makes sense

  824. if what they thought

  825. they had

  826. was actually

  827. the New Testament

  828. ability

  829. to speak

  830. foreign languages.

  831. Guess what happened

  832. when they got to India

  833. and China

  834. and Burma

  835. and Malaysia

  836. and wherever else

  837. they went?

  838. Guess what happened?

  839. All the nationals

  840. in all those countries

  841. had no idea

  842. what they were doing

  843. when they were going

  844. blah, blah, blah, blah,

  845. blah, blah, whatever.

  846. And they came back

  847. and rethought

  848. their theology

  849. and it became

  850. a matter of,

  851. well,

  852. this is

  853. spiritual

  854. praying

  855. and nobody

  856. understands it.

  857. I want you

  858. to understand

  859. that praying

  860. in the Spirit

  861. is not a collection

  862. of unintelligible

  863. vowels and consonants,

  864. nor is it

  865. being

  866. exceptionally moved

  867. by emotion.

  868. Now,

  869. sometimes we think

  870. that just because

  871. we have been moved

  872. by emotion

  873. that that necessarily

  874. is the work

  875. of the Spirit.

  876. How many of you

  877. understand that emotions

  878. are pretty fickle things?

  879. Huh?

  880. I, once again,

  881. bear with me

  882. on Facebook,

  883. but I have people

  884. that will every now

  885. and then post

  886. these little cute things

  887. about cats and dogs

  888. and tell me that

  889. if I just watch this clip,

  890. it will break me down

  891. into emotions.

  892. You follow that?

  893. Nah.

  894. I mean,

  895. I can get carried away

  896. with emotions

  897. and I think you know that,

  898. but cats and dogs

  899. don't do it.

  900. And we ought to be careful

  901. that we don't assume

  902. that just because

  903. we have a little

  904. emotional surge

  905. that it's the Spirit

  906. of God.

  907. You can

  908. work up

  909. emotions.

  910. And that's not

  911. necessarily the work

  912. of the Spirit of God.

  913. Just as an example,

  914. when was the last time

  915. you thought about people

  916. going to hell

  917. and you broke down

  918. in tears?

  919. That's the Spirit.

  920. So,

  921. let's talk about

  922. what it is to pray

  923. in the Spirit.

  924. Praying in the Spirit

  925. is praying with,

  926. number one,

  927. a sense of blessing

  928. in our relationship

  929. with Him.

  930. I think about the passage

  931. in Romans chapter 8,

    Romans 8:15

  932. verse 15.

  933. I want you to look

  934. at that passage.

  935. One of the sweet...

  936. Romans chapter 8

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  937. has a lot to say

  938. about the love of Christ

  939. and the Spirit of God

  940. who is at work

  941. in the believer.

  942. If you were to ask me

  943. what are some of the

  944. most significant things

  945. that the Lord has done

  946. in my life

  947. in the last 10 years

  948. spiritually,

  949. I would tell you

  950. that it has been

  951. His working

  952. in helping me

  953. slowly grow

  954. in appreciating

  955. the love of Christ

  956. and appreciating

  957. the work of the Spirit

  958. of God

  959. in the life

  960. of the believer.

  961. And here in Romans

    Romans 8:15

  962. chapter 8,

  963. verse 15,

  964. it says this,

  965. you have received

  966. the Spirit of adoption

  967. by whom we cry,

  968. Abba, Father.

  969. When was the last time

  970. that in your prayer life

  971. you just had this

  972. abiding sense

  973. that the God in heaven

  974. is your Father

  975. and He cares about you

  976. in a way that is

  977. beyond your comprehension

  978. and you rest

  979. in the goodness

  980. of that relationship.

  981. To pray in the Spirit

  982. is to pray

  983. with a sense

  984. of blessing

  985. in our relationship

  986. both with the Spirit

  987. of God

  988. and with the Father.

  989. To pray in the Spirit

  990. is also to pray

  991. with a thankfulness

  992. for His indwelling.

  993. I think about the passage

  994. over in John chapter 15

    John 15 chapter mention

  995. or 16

  996. where Jesus said this,

  997. it is to your advantage

  998. that I leave.

  999. That had to be

  1000. a mind blower

  1001. for the disciples.

  1002. Do you follow that?

  1003. They had no idea

  1004. that things were going

  1005. to end up

  1006. the way they did.

  1007. And we know that

  1008. because even after

  1009. the Last Supper

  1010. as Jesus went through

  1011. breaking the elements

  1012. and said,

  1013. this is my body

  1014. which is for you

  1015. and this cup

  1016. is the cup

  1017. of the New Testament

  1018. in my blood

  1019. and He explained

  1020. the fact that He

  1021. was going to die

  1022. for them.

  1023. As they left

  1024. that time

  1025. they were

  1026. bickering

  1027. with who was going

  1028. to be number one

  1029. in the kingdom.

  1030. They didn't get it.

  1031. Jesus says,

  1032. I'm leaving.

  1033. But it's a good thing

  1034. I'm leaving

  1035. because when I leave

  1036. you're going to get

  1037. the Spirit.

  1038. And so to pray

  1039. in the Spirit

  1040. means to pray

  1041. with a thankfulness

  1042. that He indwells me

  1043. that I have

  1044. the blessing

  1045. of the Spirit

  1046. of God

  1047. abiding in me.

1048. When was the last time

  1049. that you found yourself

  1050. tempted

  1051. and as you were

  1052. struggling with that

  1053. temptation

  1054. you thought to yourself,

  1055. listen,

1056. if I do this sin

1057. I am going to grieve

  1058. the Holy Spirit

  1059. who abides in me.

  1060. Do you follow that?

  1061. Think with me.

  1062. Your eyes are going

  1063. where they shouldn't go

  1064. and you think

  1065. to yourself,

  1066. the Spirit

  1067. is looking

  1068. and seeing

  1069. and grieved

  1070. by that.

1071. To pray in the Spirit

  1072. is to pray

  1073. with a conscious

  1074. dependence

  1075. on His person

  1076. and His work.

1077. When was the last time

1078. that you let Him know

  1079. how glad you are

  1080. that He is there

  1081. to help you?

  1082. Do you follow that?

  1083. I am so glad

  1084. that I have

  1085. the Holy Spirit

  1086. abiding in me.

  1087. I can tell you

  1088. that earlier

  1089. in ministry

  1090. I found

  1091. that

  1092. I spent

  1093. a great deal

  1094. of time,

  1095. in fact,

  1096. more time

  1097. in study

  1098. than in prayer

  1099. over a passage.

  1100. I wanted to understand

  1101. the Greek,

  1102. I wanted to understand

  1103. the structure,

  1104. I wanted to understand

1105. the flow of the sentence

  1106. and context

1107. and all of those things

  1108. are supremely important

1109. but as I have grown

  1110. older in the Lord

  1111. I have found

  1112. that praying

  1113. in the Spirit

  1114. is as valuable

  1115. if not more valuable

  1116. in comprehending

  1117. the Scriptures.

  1118. So praying

  1119. in the Spirit

  1120. is to be

  1121. dependent

  1122. upon His work.

1123. I want to tell you

  1124. another thing

  1125. that to pray

  1126. in the Spirit

  1127. means to pray

  1128. with a deference

  1129. to His Word.

  1130. What do I mean

  1131. by a deference?

  1132. To pray

  1133. in the Spirit

  1134. means to pray

  1135. with the enabling

  1136. of the Spirit

  1137. of God

  1138. doing something

  1139. in my thinking.

  1140. Do you follow that?

  1141. And if we follow

  1142. the passage

  1143. in John chapter 16

    John 16 chapter mention

  1144. we understand

  1145. that the work

  1146. of the Spirit

  1147. of God

  1148. is to bring

  1149. the Scriptures

  1150. to mind.

  1151. And if I am

  1152. praying in the Spirit

  1153. my prayer life

  1154. will be enriched

  1155. and characterized

  1156. by the Scriptures.

1157. To pray in the Spirit

  1158. is to pray

  1159. with an amplified

  1160. focus on Christ.

  1161. Turn in your Bible

  1162. turn in your Bible

1163. and I close with this

  1164. to John chapter 16

    John 16:14

  1165. verse 14.

  1166. I have made

  1167. repeated references

  1168. this morning

  1169. to the book

  1170. of John

  1171. in particular

  1172. to chapter 16

  1173. because in John

    John 15 chapter mention

  1174. chapter 15

  1175. 16

  1176. you find

  1177. John giving us

  1178. perhaps

  1179. the most complete

  1180. study of the doctrine

  1181. of the Spirit's ministry

  1182. in our lives

  1183. as Jesus explains

  1184. to the disciples

  1185. the benefit

  1186. they're going to have

  1187. after He leaves.

  1188. But look at

  1189. John chapter 16

    John 16:14

  1190. verse 14

  1191. as Jesus

  1192. is explaining

  1193. to His disciples

  1194. what the Spirit

  1195. of God

  1196. will do

  1197. when He comes.

  1198. He will glorify me.

  1199. How do I know

  1200. that I'm praying

  1201. in the Spirit?

  1202. How do I know

  1203. that I'm walking

  1204. in the Spirit?

  1205. How do I know

  1206. that I'm rejoicing

  1207. in the Spirit?

  1208. How do I know

  1209. that the Spirit

  1210. of God

  1211. is at work

  1212. in Tim Kenoyer's life?

  1213. I know it

  1214. when Jesus Christ

  1215. is the one

  1216. that is exalted

  1217. and lifted up.

  1218. Why?

  1219. Because that's

  1220. His work.

  1221. He

  1222. will glorify

  1223. me.

  1224. He

  1225. I want you

  1226. to think

  1227. with me

  1228. for a moment.

  1229. Paul is

  1230. greatly

  1231. concerned

  1232. for believers

  1233. in Ephesus

  1234. whose lives

  1235. were threatened

  1236. by an enemy

  1237. that wanted

  1238. to trash

  1239. them.

  1240. Do you

  1241. follow that?

  1242. And as

  1243. that passage

  1244. was being read

  1245. I have no doubt

  1246. that as

  1247. perhaps Timothy

  1248. don't know for sure

  1249. but as

  1250. whoever was reading

  1251. that passage

  1252. of Scripture

  1253. was reading it

  1254. with the enabling

  1255. of the Spirit

  1256. of God

  1257. I have no doubt

  1258. that he could look

  1259. out on the congregation

  1260. and see the faces

  1261. of people

  1262. that he loved

  1263. as a shepherd

  1264. and he saw

  1265. them there

  1266. harmed

  1267. and wounded.

  1268. And his heart

  1269. was with them

  1270. as he prayed

  1271. oh I hope

  1272. they get it

  1273. and they pray

  1274. always

  1275. in the Spirit.

  1276. Do we have

  1277. an enemy?

  1278. Yeah.

  1279. Yeah.

  1280. Has he wounded

  1281. you before?

  1282. Yes.

  1283. Am I more

  1284. fearful of him

  1285. today than I

  1286. used to be?

  1287. Yes.

  1288. Am I more

  1289. conscious of

  1290. the Spirit's

  1291. enabling

  1292. and sufficiency

  1293. and power

  1294. and blessing?

  1295. Yes.

  1296. And where

  1297. are you in

  1298. that?

  1299. Let's close

  1300. in prayer.

  1301. Holy Spirit

  1302. work

  1303. in the lives

  1304. of people

  1305. that know

  1306. the Lord Jesus

  1307. Christ

  1308. are blessed

  1309. with salvation

  1310. and desperately

  1311. need victory

  1312. over an

  1313. enemy

  1314. that hates

  1315. their soul.

  1316. And let

  1317. the thing

  1318. that characterizes

  1319. the outcome

  1320. of the

  1321. preaching

  1322. of the

  1323. word of God

  1324. today be

  1325. this

  1326. God

  1327. that we

  1328. be a

  1329. people

  1330. who pray

  1331. at all

  1332. times

  1333. in the

  1334. Spirit.

  1335. Amen.

  1336. Let's

  1337. stand together

  1338. as we

  1339. close

  1340. and as we

  1341. are singing

  1342. our closing

  1343. song

  1344. God

  1345. I want

  1346. to

  1347. encourage

  1348. you

  1349. if you

  1350. are here

  1351. this

  1352. morning

  1353. and

  1354. there's

  1355. a matter

  1356. that you

  1357. need

  1358. to

  1359. settle

  1360. and
