  1. I have to tell you that when I

  2. put my message together this morning, one of the things I always do is I tuck

  3. the text into where I'm going to be preaching.

  4. And this is Father's Day, and I happened to look down later and realize that I'd put it into Ephesians chapter 6.

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  5. And if you are thinking we're going to be in Ephesians chapter 6 this morning,

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  6. there's a high probability that unless I default to that, we won't get near it.

  7. I want you to turn your Bibles this morning to Deuteronomy chapter 6.

    Deuteronomy 6 chapter mention

  8. And I want you to join me in prayer.

  9. Father God, we pray this morning to ask that the Holy Spirit,

  10. who our Savior told us, would be given to us as a gift,

  11. as an enabler,

  12. to abide with us,

  13. to help us comprehend the beauty of the Scriptures,

  14. to help us grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus,

  15. to help us sing,

  16. to help us be godly fathers and mothers

  17. and godly young people and godly witnesses

  18. in a wicked and perverse world.

  19. Lord, we pray this morning that

  20. our helper

  21. would do just that

  22. and help us

  23. to perceive

  24. beautiful things in the Word

  25. that we might delight

  26. in your wisdom,

  27. that we might have a reverence and fear

  28. for your person,

  29. that we might have a humble desire

  30. to grow to be more

  31. like the Lord Jesus,

  32. and that each of us,

  33. recognizing that

  34. you have appointed

  35. specific tasks,

  36. would be humble to receive

  37. the direction that you have for us

  38. in the arena

  39. of life that you've placed us.

  40. and Lord,

  41. I do pray

  42. that at the conclusion of our time

  43. of studying the Word together,

  44. that the thing that would be recognized

  45. is the evidence of the ministry

  46. of the Holy Spirit.

  47. and I ask this in Jesus' name.

  48. Amen.

  49. As I take up Father's Day

  50. this morning,

  51. I think of the fact that

  52. it's a day that's important.

  53. It's a day that

  54. really has

  55. far more significance and weight

  56. than you may realize,

  57. and I have to confess

  58. that I remember

  59. when I first discovered

  60. that I was a father,

  61. I really had not given much thought

  62. to the responsibilities

  63. that went along with it.

  64. Judith and I got married

  65. June 27th,

  66. and three months later

  67. she came to me

  68. and she says,

  69. Honey, guess what?

  70. And I had no idea

  71. that what she was going to tell me

  72. is that I was going to be a father

  73. in nine months or so.

  74. In fact,

  75. Heather,

  76. my oldest daughter,

  77. was born

  78. on our first anniversary.

  79. anniversary.

  80. And I had to learn

  81. very quickly

  82. to keep

  83. a year's gap

  84. between Heather's birth

  85. and our anniversary

  86. because I remember

  87. at one point

  88. actually going to preach

  89. at a youth conference

  90. and I ended up

  91. getting the dates

  92. rather mixed up

  93. and it caused

  94. a lot of anxiety.

  95. But my wife

  96. came to my aid

  97. and she

  98. let everybody know

  99. publicly

  100. that we had

  101. a full year

  102. of marriage

  103. behind us

  104. before Heather

  105. had been born.

  106. I had no idea

  107. what went into

  108. being a father

  109. and the truth

  110. of the matter

  111. is that

  112. I really

  113. only afterwards

  114. began to think

  115. seriously

  116. of what God

  117. had to say

  118. about the responsibilities

  119. and studying

  120. and it was an arduous

  121. and has been

  122. an arduous journey.

  123. I can tell you

  124. that I am not done

  125. being a father.

  126. I am father

  127. to four children.

  128. I am grandfather

  129. to I think

  130. am I right

  131. thirteen

  132. Heather

  133. Todd

  134. I don't know

  135. I've got plenty

  136. of them out there

  137. so it's like

  138. but we

  139. are very thankful

  140. for the blessing

  141. of taking the word

  142. of God this morning

  143. and opening it up

  144. and looking

  145. and I want to tell you

  146. up front

  147. that what I'm going

  148. to talk about

  149. this morning

  150. is not new

  151. to any of you.

  152. Well I hope

  153. not new to any of you

  154. but I have

  155. no apology

  156. for the fact

  157. that we're going

  158. to be reviewing

  159. something that is

  160. foundational.

  161. I know

  162. that those

  163. of our congregation

  164. that are officers

  165. are responsible

  166. for carrying

  167. a firearm.

  168. It's part of their

  169. life and their duty

  170. but whether you

  171. realize it or not

  172. they have to

  173. re-qualify

  174. with that firearm

  175. at least three times

  176. a year.

  177. My son

  178. who is in the army

  179. has to pass

  180. a physical test

  181. every year.

  182. In fact

  183. as a captain

  184. in the battery command

  185. that he has

  186. he had the

  187. unfortunate responsibility

  188. of dismissing

  189. two soldiers

  190. who after repeated

  191. efforts at trying

  192. to pass

  193. their physical

  194. PT skills

  195. never did it

  196. and they kept

  197. on being

  198. just kind of

  199. shuffled off

  200. shuffled off

  201. and he eventually

  202. had to say

  203. you know what

  204. the army

  205. as much as it

  206. dearly loves you

  207. is not willing

  208. to let you

  209. continue being

  210. a slug

  211. and you're

  212. dismissed.

  213. So this business

  214. of re-qualifying

  215. is important.

  216. I know that

  217. those who are

  218. involved in medicine

  219. cannot kind of

  220. rest on their

  221. laurels and say

  222. well hey what

  223. I have a degree

  224. that was minted

  225. in 1994

  226. and that's the way

  227. it is.

  228. They have to

  229. continue to

  230. re-qualify

  231. and to review

  232. and to remind

  233. themselves of the

  234. essential duties

  235. that go with the

  236. discharge of their

  237. office and so it

  238. is today that as

  239. we look at the

  240. subject of fatherhood

  241. we're going to look

  242. at basic passages

  243. that talk about

  244. some of the

  245. absolutely foundational

  246. issues to being

  247. a father.

  248. I confess

  249. there's much more

  250. that the scriptures

  251. have to say

  252. about the role

  253. of a father

  254. and I'm not

  255. going to talk

  256. about the fact

  257. that a dad

  258. is supposed to

  259. be the breadwinner.

  260. I'm not going

  261. to talk about

  262. the fact that

  263. he is to be

  264. the model of

  265. loving for his

  266. wife and his

  267. family.

  268. I'm not going

  269. to talk about

  270. the fact that

  271. he's the family

  272. protector.

  273. But I am going

  274. to concentrate

  275. this morning

  276. on just two

  277. simple principles

  278. and we're going

  279. to rely on

  280. those two

  281. principles

  282. for foundational

  283. direction

  284. in the duty

  285. and the obligation

  286. that a man

  287. has when he

  288. is a father.

  289. So what are

  290. those two?

  291. Number one,

  292. God calls the

  293. man to be

  294. the spiritual

  295. leader in his

  296. home and number

  297. two, God calls

  298. the man to be

  299. the spiritual

  300. intercessor in

  301. his home.

  302. Dad is to be

  303. the spiritual

  304. leader.

  305. I want you to

  306. look in your

  307. Bible over the

  308. passage that I

  309. referenced early

  310. in Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 6 chapter mention

  311. chapter 6.

  312. Do you know

  313. why we turn in

  314. our Bibles?

  315. Does anybody

  316. know why?

  317. It is so that

  318. you yourself,

  319. where you sit,

  320. can look at the

  321. Scriptures yourself

  322. and be fully

  323. persuaded that

  324. what you are

  325. hearing is not

  326. what I think.

  327. It is what the

  328. Bible says.

  329. And my obligation

  330. and my responsibility

  331. is to open it up

  332. and make it clear

  333. and make it plain

  334. and help you

  335. understand,

  336. thus saith the

  337. Lord.

  338. And we are

  339. looking at a

  340. passage that is

  341. fundamental to the

  342. responsibility of

  343. being a father.

  344. Picking up there

  345. in verse 4,

  346. mark what it

  347. says,

  348. Hear, O Israel,

  349. the Lord our

  350. God, the Lord

  351. is one.

  352. Now, I want to

  353. take a second and

  354. have you think with

  355. me that as this

  356. great passage begins,

  357. incidentally, if you

  358. were a Jew and you

  359. were a Jew who was

  360. trying to get extra

  361. points, you would say

  362. this passage in the

  363. morning when the

  364. first break of dawn

  365. and you got out of

  366. bed.

  367. You would say, it

  368. was called the

  369. Shema, hear.

  370. That's the word in

  371. Hebrew, Shema.

  372. It would be, hear,

  373. O Israel, the Lord

  374. our God, the Lord is

  375. one.

  376. Incidentally, if you

  377. really wanted to get

  378. extra, extra points,

  379. the last thing out of

  380. your mouth as you

  381. were dying would be,

  382. hear, O Israel, the

  383. Lord our God, the

  384. Lord is one.

  385. This passage was so

  386. foundational to the

  387. nation of Israel and

  388. to their walk with God

  389. that they valued it

  390. supremely.

  391. And here we have a

  392. passage in which God

  393. speaks to fathers in

  394. particular and he says,

  395. first of all, you

  396. listen to me.

  397. Hear, O Israel.

  398. By the way, who's

  399. talking?

  400. The Lord our God.

  401. Then he makes a

  402. foundational theological

  403. statement, the Lord is

  404. one.

  405. And in that, we have

  406. the uniqueness of God,

  407. we have the exceptional

  408. characteristic of him.

  409. Remember, he says, I am

  410. who I am, foundational in

  411. that little statement, the

  412. Lord is one.

  413. But then behind that, we

  414. have a very interesting

  415. statement.

  416. Often when we think about

  417. our walk with God, we

  418. tend to break it down into

  419. a matter of the do's and

  420. don'ts.

  421. Would you recognize

  422. that?

  423. This morning as I was

  424. having my devotional life, I

  425. was reading in the book of

  426. Exodus and I happened to be

  427. in Exodus chapter 20.

    Exodus 20 chapter mention

  428. Does anybody know what

  429. Exodus 20 is about?

  430. Anybody tell me, what is

  431. Exodus 20 about?

  432. It's the Ten Commandments.

  433. How many of you could

  434. recite them with one hand

  435. behind your back?

  436. You should be able to,

  437. right?

  438. And I want you to think

  439. with me this morning of the

  440. fact that tendency is for us

  441. to think about our

  442. relationship with God as

  443. being a matter of the do's

  444. and don'ts.

  445. That's not the way it is.

  446. God wants us to understand

  447. first of all that we are to

  448. be in a relationship with

  449. him that is governed and

  450. controlled and colored and

  451. influenced by our love for

  452. him.

  453. Here in the passage in verse

  454. five it says, you shall love

  455. the Lord your God with all

  456. your heart, with all your

  457. soul, and with all your

  458. might.

  459. How many of you are doing

  460. well at loving him?

  461. Don't raise your hand and

  462. wait, I am.

  463. That's not what I'm looking

  464. for.

  465. Truth of the matter is, is

  466. that on our own we do not

  467. love anyone very well except

  468. who?

  469. Who do you love well?

  470. You're a little bit like that

  471. wicked witch, remember?

  472. Mirror, mirror on the wall,

  473. who's the fairest of the…

  474. Are you guys into Disney or

  475. not?

  476. What's the deal with you?

  477. You know, it's like, hello,

  478. go home, forget Frozen, go

  479. back to the classics.

  480. You know, it's like, okay.

  481. We're a little bit like that

  482. wicked witch.

  483. Now I give my age away, I

  484. suppose.

  485. And, you know, here it's all

  486. about me.

  487. God says you're to love me.

  488. And incidentally, the thing

  489. that brings us into a loving

  490. relationship with God is not

  491. our own volition but the grace

  492. of God that, first of all,

  493. reveals his love to us by

  494. telling us the truth about our

  495. nature and how desperately

  496. lost we are and then drawing

  497. us to the cross and helping

  498. us see at the cross the

  499. unconditional, unchanging love

  500. of God in Christ Jesus.

  501. And we, having been saved by

  502. his grace and having our hearts

  503. changed, then have the ability

  504. to love him.

  505. And we grow in our love, in

  506. particular, in proportion to our

  507. understanding of his love for

  508. us.

  509. In this passage, it says there,

  510. you shall love the Lord your

  511. God with all your heart and with

  512. all your soul and with all your

  513. might.

  514. And as you look at this passage,

  515. I want you to understand that out

  516. of that then is to flow in verse

  517. six, and these words that I command

  518. you shall be in your heart.

  519. You know what?

  520. Listen to me.

  521. If you really don't have an

  522. intimate and affectionate

  523. relationship with the Lord of

  524. this universe, what he has to say

  525. is not that important.

  526. Agreed?

  527. Several years ago, my wife said to

  528. me, at one moment in our morning

  529. conversations, she said to me,

  530. honey, I'm concerned.

  531. Now, that's always a warning for me

  532. that something is coming of

  533. significance.

  534. Because Judith is not a chattery

  535. individual, and when she says I'm

  536. concerned and then paused, I knew

  537. that I ought to pick up on the lead

  538. and show some concern.

  539. What are you concerned about?

  540. She says, well, I don't know if you're

  541. getting the early signals of

  542. Alzheimer's or you're not listening to

  543. me.

  544. Now, the choices were pretty brutal.

  545. I have an exceptionally intelligent

  546. wife, and she had me cornered with that

  547. statement.

  548. I chose to confess that I wasn't

  549. listening.

  550. I think that was a fair

  551. admission.

  552. And what it reminded me of, in part,

  553. was that, you know what?

  554. When we really care, we really listen.

  555. Would you agree with that statement?

  556. When we really care, we really listen.

  557. Why is it that mothers are the first

  558. ones to interpret their children's

  559. babblings?

  560. You say to a mom, what did he say?

  561. Oh, well, she understands, and it's not

  562. just because she gave birth to him, it's

  563. because she cares and loves that kid, and

  564. she can understand because her heart's in it.

  565. And God says, listen, you've got to love

  566. me.

  567. And then the words that I command you

  568. shall be in your heart.

  569. You see, as we look at this passage, the

  570. thing I want you to understand is that

  571. dad is to be the spiritual leader, and in

  572. order to be the leader, he has to have an

  573. interest and an affection in the Lord, but

  574. also an understanding of his word.

  575. Here's what God makes clear.

  576. He says that the dad must know and care

  577. deeply about what he's expected to teach

  578. The remainder of this text really deals

  579. with the responsibility that dad has of

  580. being the spiritual teacher in his home.

  581. But the starting place to what you teach

  582. is not just acquiring the information.

  583. It is having a relationship with the

  584. foundational person of the universe and

  585. having an affection for that person and

  586. having a heart that wants to hear what he

  587. has to say.

  588. We live in a wicked and perverse world, don't

  589. we?

  590. I remember earlier this week just being

  591. both frightened and sobered.

  592. When I stopped at one point in doing some

  593. research and I was on the computer and I

  594. stopped and realized that it is so easy to

  595. access things on the web that are just

  596. absolutely perverse and wicked.

  597. Do you understand that?

  598. I went to YouTube and I have no idea what, here I am

  599. telling you what I was doing on YouTube, but

  600. spending time as I'm sitting there with my father

  601. sleeping, I thought I would kind of find out long

  602. range rifle shots at deer.

  603. You know, important things.

  604. And so I clicked on that and I'm scrolling down and

  605. right there on the right side are pictures that are

  606. absolutely wicked and perverse.

  607. Now, thankfully, they're in these microscopic little

  608. things, but it's like, whoa, you know.

  609. You Google something.

  610. Out of sincere interest to discover, and there in the

  611. Google string, there are things that you, I don't want to

  612. click on that.

  613. Am I right?

  614. You go to Fox News, you go to MSN, wherever you go, the

  615. world is a wicked place.

  616. But I want you to understand that the greatest challenge to

  617. fatherhood today is not the wicked and perverse culture we

  618. live in.

  619. Listen to me.

  620. The greatest challenge comes from fathers who are not deeply

  621. committed and enthralled with God.

  622. The greatest challenge to fathers today is fathers that are not

  623. deeply committed and enthralled with God.

  624. A father that is actually more engaged in baseball than he is

  625. with his own devotional life, or a father that is more passionate

  626. about boating on the weekend than he is in helping his children

  627. grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ,

  628. should not be surprised if at the end of the day he sees his

  629. children go further into idolatry than he has.

  630. And so as you look at this passage, let me help you understand that

  631. the first thing that the Bible says to us is,

  632. Dads, you are the spiritual teachers of your home, and you're

  633. responsible to teach, but things come first in order, and before you

  634. teach, you have to know, and you have to have the right

  635. relationship with the Lord Jesus.

  636. You have to have the right passion for the things of God.

  637. And so ask yourself the question, what does your devotional life

  638. look like?

  639. Now, do devotions make men automatic saints?

  640. What's the answer?

  641. Get this, no.

  642. But I will tell you something.

  643. A daily devotional life is protective in a profound way.

  644. Mothers, wives, if you see your husband's devotional life beginning to fall off,

  645. guess what you know is beginning to take place in their life?

  646. They're an accident waiting for a place to happen.

  647. Now, what should you do when you see that happening?

  648. Should you pick up the Bible and slam it on their chest in the morning?

  649. You know, it's like, bang, get this done.

  650. No, that's not my suggestion to you.

  651. But try with prayer and a godly life to be an encouragement and expect the Spirit of God

  652. to respond accordingly.

  653. You look at that passage there in Deuteronomy, it says, hey, you've got to know the Lord,

  654. you've got to love the Lord, you've got to know the Word.

  655. And so if you're going to be effective in being the spiritual leader in your home,

  656. your children should know about your devotional life.

  657. They should know about it.

  658. Let me have you turn to a passage that several months ago the Lord just really tagged me with.

  659. In fact, if you were to go into my office this morning or tonight or this afternoon,

  660. you would see it on the wall.

  661. When I sit there and prepare week by week and spend time in the office,

  662. there are actually three different things that are set on the wall across from me

  663. so I can see them and they're reminding me of my responsibilities.

  664. One is from John chapter 5 verse 39, and it says this,

    John 5:39

  665. how does this sermon testify to Christ?

  666. Second thing is Isaiah chapter 50 verse 4.

    Isaiah 50:4

  667. Let me read it to you.

  668. The Lord has given me the tongue of those who are taught.

  669. Incidentally, this passage is a reference.

  670. It is messianic.

  671. It is a reference to the Lord Jesus.

  672. The Lord has given me the tongue of those who are taught

  673. that I may know how to sustain with the Word him who is weary.

  674. Do you want, Dad, to be able to encourage, to sustain, to counsel,

  675. to direct your son in the moments that are important?

  676. Yes.

  677. How will you do that?

  678. Morning by morning he awakens.

  679. I like that.

  680. Morning by morning he awakens.

  681. He awakens my ear to hear as those who are taught.

  682. Dad, I don't think it would be a bad idea for you to take that verse

  683. and write it out with your own hand and post it on the mirror and ask the Lord to do what needs to be done

  684. to help your devotional life begin to take upon the characteristics of this passage.

  685. Will your children need your advice?

  686. What's the answer?

  687. Yeah.

  688. Will they need your counsel and your encouragement?

  689. Yes.

  690. And so what are you going to give them?

  691. Your rehashed experiences, many of which you wish you didn't have anyway?

  692. Or would you rather that out of a heart that is enriched by the Spirit of God and by the Word of God,

  693. you may bring forth the sweetness of the Spirit of God and the wisdom that is from above that your children may know how to walk uprightly?

  694. Let me explain also that your children should see you frame life's challenges in the Scriptures.

  695. Let me say that slowly so you can follow me.

  696. Your children, we're talking about being the spiritual leader,

  697. your children should see you frame life's challenges in the Scriptures.

  698. In other words, when you yourself are challenged,

  699. when things aren't going your way,

  700. when there's a struggle and turmoil in your own life,

  701. they should see you go to the resource that is eternally valuable, prized, and reliable.

  702. I have to think about the passage in Galatians that I've recited so many times,

  703. Nevertheless, what saith the Scriptures?

  704. Paul, as he was arguing in the book of Galatians about the issue of the difference between law and grace,

  705. when he wants to hammer it,

  706. he recites something said by the Supreme Court,

  707. God.

  708. Nevertheless, what do the Scriptures say?

  709. And so when you have opportunity to face the challenges of life,

  710. what your children should see

  711. is that the authority you rely upon is God's Word.

  712. And by the way, do we always know what's in God's Word?

  713. And the answer is what?

  714. Come on, help me here.

  715. No.

  716. So what's wrong when you're not sure to say,

  717. give me a minute, I want to think this through and pray about it

  718. and find out what God's Word has to say about it.

  719. Third,

  720. your children should know that your genuine affection for the Lord and His people

  721. is at the very heart of your being in existence.

  722. Your children should know that your genuine affection for the Lord and His people

  723. is at the very heart of your existence.

  724. Is that what your kids know?

  725. Is that what they respect about you?

  726. Is that the thing that when it's all said and done,

  727. when their last memories of you are pushed together in a very small pile,

  728. will they say,

  729. the thing I remember about my dad

  730. is that he loved Christ.

  731. He loved Christ's people.

  732. I hate to use him as an example,

  733. but he's the best one I know.

  734. My dad is in a nursing home.

  735. He has Alzheimer's.

  736. There are days he's with us,

  737. and there are days that he is not.

  738. But several weeks ago,

  739. stopped in to see him on Sunday morning,

  740. and he said,

  741. when do I get to go to church?

  742. Do you follow that?

  743. Let me tell you something.

  744. That kind of heart doesn't happen by accident.

  745. It happens out of a relentless pursuit of the things of God.

  746. And so, Father,

  747. I want you to understand that

  748. your love will play out,

  749. and your kids will know it.

  750. Let me see one more thing in this passage

  751. before we move to the issue of intercession.

  752. Look at verse 7.

  753. It says,

  754. You shall teach them diligently.

  755. Diligently.

  756. Dad is to be persistent in his teaching.

  757. Persistent in his teaching.

  758. The Hebrew word actually means

  759. to say it twice.

  760. I know Pastor Andrew was

  761. kind of gathering from our young people.

  762. I'm going to tell a story here

  763. and be embarrassed,

  764. or have you embarrassed?

  765. I don't know how it'll work out.

  766. But anyway,

  767. here I am doing ministry,

  768. so I'd like to kind of find out

  769. what some of the concerns

  770. and questions are

  771. that our young people have.

  772. And he sent out a survey

  773. and got all these different answers,

  774. and then one of our youth leaders said,

  775. Well, I thought we covered that this last year.

  776. Well, yeah.

  777. Truth of the matter is,

  778. it's probably every one of those things

  779. I've covered from the pulpit as well.

  780. I'll never forget what Alistair Begg said

  781. when I was at one of his preaching conferences.

  782. He said,

  783. Never underestimate the ability of your people

  784. to forget some of the important things you've said.

  785. And, you know,

  786. it's given me great comfort.

  787. You probably don't remember

  788. that I preached this sermon back in 05.

  789. Now, I want you to know

  790. it's not the same sermon.

  791. Because preaching relies upon

  792. the ministry of the Holy Spirit,

  793. and His ministry through me to you

  794. and in you is different today than in 05.

  795. Same spirit,

  796. same word,

  797. but different need today.

  798. So, I want you to understand, Dad,

  799. that if you're going to be effective

  800. in this responsibility

  801. being the family teacher of spiritual,

  802. be repetitious!

  803. Now, am I saying

  804. just be redundant

  805. to the point of ad nauseum?

  806. How many of you know

  807. that when we sing a song that we like,

  808. we really get into it?

  809. Do you understand that?

  810. But how many of you also know

  811. if we sang the same song

  812. for about 30 weeks in a row,

  813. I don't care how wonderful it was,

  814. the first or second or third or fourth time,

  815. eventually, guess what you would do?

  816. You would tune out.

  817. And, Dad,

  818. you have to have a little bit of variety

  819. in the way you approach the business

  820. of being repetitious

  821. in your teaching.

  822. Pretend that it's a brand new thought,

  823. because the truth of the matter is,

  824. is your child,

  825. your young boy,

  826. or your girl

  827. has probably

  828. completely forgotten

  829. what you had to say,

  830. but bring it up again.

  831. Again,

  832. things that are important

  833. are often said

  834. over and over again.

  835. And I've got to tell you

  836. that the business

  837. of being repetitious

  838. with an inventive

  839. and creative spirit

  840. with an affection

  841. for the outcome

  842. is profoundly effective.

  843. Well, let me come

  844. to the second thing.

  845. Dad is to be

  846. the family intercessor.

  847. Dad is to be

  848. the family intercessor.

  849. Here I am.

  850. I am...

  851. I'm an empty nester.

  852. I've got to tell you,

  853. it's a wonderful thing.

  854. Judith and I enjoy

  855. one another's company

  856. in the morning.

  857. And here's the deal.

  858. We don't have to worry

  859. about whether

  860. anybody forgot

  861. their barrettes

  862. or, you know,

  863. whether their hair

  864. or teeth

  865. are cared for.

  866. We're just together.

  867. Let's have coffee.

  868. Let's sit there.

  869. Let's pray.

  870. Let's chatter a little bit.

  871. It's fun, fun, fun.

  872. But that doesn't mean

  873. that I'm done

  874. being a daddy.

  875. This morning as

  876. I was finishing up

  877. my devotional time,

  878. first thing I do

  879. is I spend time

  880. praying and thanking

  881. the Lord

  882. for the blessing

  883. of knowing Him

  884. and who He is.

  885. and I pray

  886. for my children.

  887. And then I take out

  888. and if you were

  889. to look at

  890. where I have things

  891. together,

  892. there is a watch care list.

  893. How many of you

  894. understand what

  895. a watch care list is?

  896. I use the watch care list

  897. to kind of govern

  898. my prayers for you.

  899. This morning

  900. it was Gibbs.

  901. Actually,

  902. it's Limkill now

  903. since, Nathan,

  904. you've taken over

  905. that office.

  906. I'm going to have

  907. to change that

  908. on my list.

  909. But I'm praying

  910. through the list

  911. and praying for

  912. each of the individuals

  913. and intercession

  914. is very, very important.

  915. I want you to look

  916. at a passage

  917. that kind of amplifies

  918. the importance of this

  919. and turn back

  920. if you would.

  921. Well, turn forward.

  922. You're in the book

  923. of Deuteronomy.

  924. Go to Job chapter 1.

    Job 1 chapter mention

  925. Job chapter 1.

    Job 1 chapter mention

  926. Job is a very

  927. interesting book

  928. that

  929. has a lot to say

  930. about suffering.

  931. And what it has

  932. to say about suffering

  933. is that sometimes

  934. we don't know.

  935. But what we do know

  936. is who God is.

  937. Anyway,

  938. in that context,

  939. as the book

  940. introduces Job,

  941. you look there

  942. in verse 1,

  943. chapter 1,

  944. it says,

  945. there was a man

  946. in the land of Uz.

  947. Can you think

  948. of any place

  949. like Uz?

  950. You know,

  951. anyway,

  952. there was a man

  953. in the land of Uz

  954. whose name was Job,

  955. and that man

  956. was blameless

  957. and upright,

  958. one who feared God

  959. and turned away

  960. from evil.

  961. that is a fairly

  962. good

  963. picture

  964. of a godly man.

  965. Would you agree

  966. with me?

  967. The next little piece

  968. we find out

  969. about this godly man

  970. is given to us

  971. in verse 5.

  972. And when the days

  973. of the feast

  974. had run their course,

  975. Job would send

  976. and consecrate them,

  977. and he would rise

  978. early in the morning

  979. and offer burnt

  980. offerings according

  981. to the number

  982. of them all.

  983. For Job said,

  984. it may be

  985. that my children

  986. have sinned

  987. and cursed God

  988. in their hearts.

  989. Thus Job

  990. did continually.

  991. Do you know

  992. what he was doing?

  993. He was praying

  994. for his children.

  995. My wife and I were,

  996. I don't know why,

  997. but yesterday

  998. we were talking

  999. about my childhood.

  1000. It was very checkered.

  1001. I won't give you

  1002. the checkering of it,

1003. but I will tell you

  1004. I made a comment

  1005. to Judith

1006. that if it had not

  1007. been for the prayers

  1008. of my parents,

  1009. I have no doubt

1010. that I would be dead.

  1011. Job prayed

  1012. for his children

  1013. every day.

  1014. Look at the passage.

1015. It says that he got up

  1016. early

  1017. in the morning.

  1018. And as we look

  1019. at this text,

  1020. we find out

  1021. that the one

  1022. illustration

  1023. that Scripture

  1024. gives us

  1025. of Job's character

  1026. revolves around

  1027. his prayer life.

  1028. Listen to me.

  1029. Everybody look up,

  1030. please.

  1031. Your prayer life

  1032. says it all

  1033. about where you are

  1034. spiritually.

  1035. Do you understand that?

  1036. your prayer life

  1037. says it all

  1038. about where you are

  1039. spiritually.

  1040. And as we look

  1041. at this passage,

  1042. we see here

  1043. a father

  1044. who is interceding

  1045. for his children.

  1046. So what we take

  1047. from that

  1048. is that a father

  1049. is to pray

  1050. consistently

  1051. for his

  1052. kids.

  1053. You know,

  1054. we're not

  1055. consistent about

  1056. things we don't

  1057. care about.

  1058. Would you agree

  1059. with that?

  1060. How many of you

  1061. have said

  1062. on many occasions

  1063. I should

  1064. clean

  1065. the garage?

  1066. Or

  1067. your car

  1068. has become

  1069. kind of a

  1070. rolling disaster

  1071. and you

  1072. have seen

  1073. all kinds

  1074. of things

  1075. in the

  1076. cup holders

  1077. and in the

  1078. back seat

  1079. and you've

  1080. thought to

  1081. yourself,

  1082. I should

  1083. clean

  1084. the car.

  1085. You know,

  1086. here's the

  1087. fact.

  1088. If it's

  1089. important,

  1090. what?

  1091. We do it.

  1092. And so as we

  1093. think about this

  1094. matter,

  1095. I want you to

  1096. understand that

  1097. intercessory prayer

  1098. is essential.

  1099. It's essential.

  1100. Well,

  1101. let's see some

  1102. illustrations of

  1103. just how important

  1104. prayer is.

  1105. I'll recite one

  1106. I've referred to

  1107. a number of

  1108. different times,

  1109. but just to kind

  1110. of set the

  1111. frame,

  1112. in Exodus

    Exodus 17:9–13

  1113. chapter 17

  1114. verse 9

  1115. through 13,

  1116. we have

  1117. Moses and

  1118. he takes

  1119. the nation

  1120. of Israel,

  1121. some of the

  1122. select soldiers

  1123. and says,

  1124. hey,

  1125. go whoop on

  1126. those people.

  1127. He says,

  1128. I'm not going

  1129. to be there.

  1130. I'm going

  1131. to be on

  1132. top of the

  1133. hill.

  1134. And what

  1135. does he do

  1136. on top of

  1137. the hill?

  1138. He holds

  1139. up his arms.

  1140. He's praying.

  1141. Every time his

  1142. arms fall down,

  1143. his troops

  1144. suffer.

  1145. They end up

  1146. where Moses

  1147. sits on a stone

  1148. and Aaron and

  1149. Hur,

  1150. I believe,

  1151. are on one

  1152. side and the

  1153. other and they

  1154. hold his arms

  1155. up and the

  1156. battle comes

  1157. to their

  1158. favor.

  1159. I want you

  1160. to look at

  1161. another illustration

  1162. of the

  1163. significance

  1164. and the

  1165. kind of

  1166. passion that

  1167. should be

  1168. in your

  1169. intercessory

  1170. prayer for

  1171. your children.

  1172. Turn,

  1173. if you would,

  1174. you're in

  1175. Job,

  1176. but go back

  1177. to Exodus

    Exodus 32 chapter mention

  1178. chapter 32.

  1179. Exodus

    Exodus 32 chapter mention

  1180. chapter 32.

  1181. By the

  1182. way,

  1183. how many

  1184. of you

  1185. realize that

  1186. the nation

  1187. of Israel

  1188. was a pretty

  1189. perverse and

  1190. painful group

  1191. of people

  1192. to lead?

  1193. They just

  1194. loved on

  1195. Moses all

  1196. the time.

  1197. You know,

  1198. it's like,

  1199. Moses,

  1200. whatever you

  1201. say,

  1202. we're with

  1203. you,

  1204. we love

  1205. you,

  1206. we appreciate

  1207. the fact

  1208. that we've

  1209. not had

  1210. water for

  1211. three days,

  1212. but we

  1213. know God's

  1214. helping us

  1215. and he'll

  1216. care for

  1217. us.

  1218. No,

  1219. that's not

  1220. the way

  1221. they were.

  1222. And when

  1223. he goes

  1224. off to get

  1225. the law,

  1226. one of

  1227. the passages

  1228. I don't

  1229. understand was

  1230. that when

  1231. Moses was

  1232. gone,

  1233. remember they

  1234. came to

  1235. Aaron and

  1236. says,

  1237. hey,

  1238. we need

  1239. gods to

  1240. take us

  1241. back,

  1242. and he

  1243. says,

  1244. well,

  1245. give me

  1246. your rings

  1247. and your

  1248. earrings and

  1249. stuff,

  1250. and he

  1251. makes a

  1252. golden calf.

  1253. Well,

  1254. then when

  1255. Moses shows

  1256. up on the

  1257. scene,

  1258. I don't

  1259. know how

  1260. Aaron got

  1261. away with

  1262. this,

  1263. and I'm

  1264. not sure

  1265. I'll ask

  1266. when I get

  1267. to heaven

  1268. either.

  1269. But here's

  1270. the deal.

  1271. He says,

  1272. I threw

  1273. it into

  1274. the fire

  1275. and this

  1276. came out.

  1277. Anyway,

  1278. God says,

  1279. Moses,

  1280. let me deal

  1281. with these

  1282. people.

  1283. I'm going

  1284. to destroy

  1285. them.

  1286. And here

  1287. is Moses.

  1288. Exodus

    Exodus 32:31

  1289. 32,

  1290. verse 31.

  1291. So Moses

  1292. returned to

  1293. the Lord

  1294. and said,

  1295. alas,

  1296. this people

  1297. has sinned

  1298. a great

  1299. sin.

  1300. they've

  1301. made for

  1302. themselves

  1303. gods of

  1304. gold.

  1305. But now,

  1306. if you

  1307. will forgive

  1308. their sins,

  1309. now look,

  1310. how many

  1311. of you have

  1312. a little

  1313. hyphen and

  1314. a space

  1315. in your

  1316. translation of

  1317. the scriptures?

  1318. Raise your

  1319. hand if you

  1320. have a hyphen

  1321. and a space.

  1322. Okay?

  1323. Do you

  1324. know why

  1325. that's there?

  1326. that is

  1327. an indication

  1328. of the

  1329. extreme

  1330. respect

  1331. that the

  1332. ancient

  1333. Hebrews had

  1334. for every

  1335. letter and

  1336. space in

  1337. the Old

  1338. Testament.

  1339. And in the

  1340. original

  1341. manuscript,

  1342. there was a

  1343. space.

  1344. space.

  1345. I don't

  1346. know what

  1347. is in

  1348. that space

  1349. other than

  1350. probably a

  1351. little bit of

  1352. speculation.

  1353. How many

  1354. of you have

  1355. been praying

  1356. passionately for

  1357. something and

  1358. been overwhelmed?

  1359. Remember what it

  1360. says in the

  1361. passage in

  1362. Romans?

  1363. It says that

  1364. sometimes there

  1365. are things that

  1366. the Holy Spirit

  1367. prays with groanings

  1368. that cannot be

  1369. uttered,

  1370. right?

  1371. Our heart is so

  1372. caught up in

  1373. the depths and

  1374. the passion of

  1375. our concern for

  1376. someone that we

  1377. love that we're

  1378. choked off.

  1379. here's Moses

  1380. pleading for the

  1381. nation of

  1382. Israel that

  1383. they not be

  1384. destroyed for

  1385. their perverse

  1386. and wicked

  1387. heart.

  1388. And he comes

  1389. to this point

  1390. and he says,

  1391. listen, if you

  1392. forgive their

  1393. sin, they

  1394. can't say

  1395. anything.

  1396. But if not,

  1397. listen to this,

  1398. please blot

  1399. me out of

  1400. your book.

  1401. I've got to

  1402. tell you,

  1403. intercession is a

  1404. deep,

  1405. burdensome

  1406. plea for those

  1407. that you love.

  1408. And as we

  1409. read this

  1410. passage, it

  1411. reminds us that

  1412. intercession is

  1413. something that's

  1414. profound.

  1415. Well, one

  1416. other passage,

  1417. and we'll close

  1418. with this issue of

  1419. intercession and

  1420. remind ourselves

  1421. that it's what

  1422. Jesus is doing

  1423. for us today.

  1424. Do you know

  1425. that?

  1426. I love,

  1427. I love,

  1428. I do.

  1429. I love Hebrews

    Hebrews 7:25

  1430. chapter 7,

  1431. verse 25.

  1432. It says,

  1433. he ever liveth

  1434. to do what?

  1435. What's he doing

  1436. for Tim Kenoyer

  1437. this morning?

  1438. He is interceding

  1439. before the Father

  1440. on my behalf.

  1441. He's interceding

  1442. on your behalf.

  1443. Does he know

  1444. how weak and

  1445. frail?

  1446. Does he know

  1447. where your mind

  1448. has been today?

  1449. Does he know

  1450. the struggle

  1451. you have with

  1452. idolatry?

  1453. He does know

  1454. all those things.

  1455. And what is he

  1456. doing?

  1457. He is there

  1458. before the

  1459. Father's throne

  1460. today, and he

  1461. is pleading

  1462. your case.

  1463. So here's what

  1464. I want you to

  1465. do, dads.

  1466. Remember?

  1467. The purpose

  1468. of preaching

  1469. is to tell you

  1470. what God

  1471. has to say.

  1472. Isn't that right?

  1473. My responsibility

  1474. is to open up

  1475. the Word of God

  1476. and say,

  1477. here's what

  1478. the Bible

  1479. has to say,

  1480. and this morning

  1481. I speak to you

  1482. who are fathers.

  1483. And I say,

  1484. you've got two

  1485. responsibilities

  1486. that I want you

  1487. to think about

  1488. this morning.

  1489. Number one

  1490. is the responsibility

  1491. of being the

  1492. family instructor

  1493. and teacher

  1494. in the matters

  1495. of righteousness.

  1496. Number two,

  1497. you are to be

  1498. the intercessor

  1499. before the throne

  1500. of God

  1501. on behalf

  1502. of your children.

  1503. So it's a

  1504. practical question

  1505. to say,

  1506. how are you

  1507. doing at both

  1508. those things?

  1509. It's a fair

  1510. question.

  1511. And this morning

  1512. as we think

  1513. clearly of what

  1514. God has to say,

  1515. it really comes

  1516. down to those

  1517. who are fathers

  1518. saying,

  1519. yes,

  1520. God,

  1521. I hear what you

  1522. say and I want

  1523. to be sincere

  1524. and righteous.

  1525. I want to do

  1526. what you've called

  1527. me to do

  1528. and I'm willing

  1529. to go on notice.

  1530. how many of you

  1531. realize it's one

  1532. thing to make

  1533. private decisions

  1534. that nobody else

  1535. knows about?

  1536. Do you follow

  1537. that?

  1538. Oh,

  1539. we've all

  1540. done that.

  1541. Yeah,

  1542. yeah,

  1543. if it works

  1544. out,

  1545. I think I'll

  1546. be a little

  1547. better at my

  1548. devotions next

  1549. day.

  1550. I want to

  1551. challenge you

  1552. this morning,

  1553. fathers.

  1554. God being my

  1555. helper,

  1556. I'm going to be

  1557. the spiritual

  1558. leader in my

  1559. home.

  1560. God being my

  1561. helper,

  1562. I'm going to be

  1563. the family

  1564. intercessor

  1565. in my home.

  1566. Let's close

  1567. in prayer.
