  7. ...are dealing with a very important part in the study of the book of Ephesians in particular.

  8. And so given the importance of this, I decided that it was wise...

  9. ...several weeks ago, we studied the first part of verse 19 in which we find the apostle asking that God's people would pray for him as he is preaching.

  10. And we understand and I greatly appreciate the encouragement that I receive and the encouragement that you provide all who come to this place...

  11. ...and stand at the front to handle the word of God, that you pray for them and you let them know that.

  12. Last week, Judith and I were part of a wedding in Lynchburg, Virginia.

  13. And then we drove back Sunday morning and we were part of a wedding in Pickerington, Ohio that got rained out.

  14. It's the first outdoor wedding that I have been rained on and it was a very abbreviated ceremony, I can tell you that.

  15. In fact, my wife says that the only part that really came out loudly was at the end where I said,

  16. You may kiss the bride! And I ran for the shelter along with the rest of the herd.

  17. I will tell you that as Judith and I were driving back, that I prayed often for Pastor Saul.

  18. And afterwards, I checked in with him and he said,

  19. You know, one of the encouragements is that there were a number of you that came to him and said,

  20. I was praying for you.

  21. And I am blessed when I hear people encourage those who come to the pulpit by the reminder that they,

  22. in submission to the authority of the word of God,

  23. are praying for the man who God has appointed to stand and deliver the word faithfully and clearly.

  24. So we're going to pay a little bit of attention to the furtherance of this subject.

  25. Look there in the passage, if you will, at Ephesians chapter 6, verse 19.

    Ephesians 6:19

  26. And Paul says, listen, the larger context is in verse 18, where he says,

  27. Hey, praying at all times in the Spirit.

  28. And 19.

  29. And also for me.

  30. Now stop and realize that when Paul says,

  31. And pray for me.

  32. He immediately goes on forward and lets us know what we ought to be praying for him about.

  33. And it's there.

  34. He says there in verse 19,

  35. That the words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel,

  36. for which I'm an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly as I ought to speak.

  37. And so my heart's desire this morning, and my persistent prayer has been this,

  38. that you will leave here this morning fully persuaded that praying for preaching is essential,

  39. and that your prayer is to be focused on the help of the Holy Spirit.

  40. Now do you follow that?

  41. It is that the Holy Spirit would work in the preaching of the word of God

  42. through the heart and life of the individual,

  43. the man that he places before you to handle the word.

  44. With that being said, let me take up the passage and address the fact that effective preaching depends upon the Holy Spirit.

  45. I'm going to take the majority of our time really studying that small little phrase,

  46. that words may be given.

  47. We will first want to understand just what Paul meant,

  48. and how what he says fits into the larger picture of the ministry of the Holy Spirit in the Bible.

  49. And so when we look at that little part, that little statement,

  50. that words may be given,

  51. it tells us immediately that Paul is asking people to pray about something

  52. that is beyond him and is not dependent or not enabled by his own nature

  53. or his own training or his own expertise.

  54. I remember many years ago when I was considering further studies,

  55. I thought carefully about actually getting a Ph.D. in rhetoric.

  56. I was an English major in my previous life as a young man,

  57. and at one point I thought, you know, rhetoric is an important discipline,

  58. and so I began thinking carefully about the subject and doing a little bit of background research,

  59. and I came to a settled opinion that for me,

  60. the study of rhetoric was not quite as important

  61. as the study of godliness and humility and a continuing pursuit of the Word of God

  62. and a focus in growing in the grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus.

  63. Effective preaching ultimately is not a matter of rhetorical discipline,

  64. but as a matter of relying upon the Word of God

  65. to be clear through the enabling of the Spirit of God.

  66. And when Paul says that words would be given,

  67. I want you to understand that he was an exceptionally brilliant man,

  68. and he was very well educated.

  69. However, as we are going to see later in our studies this morning,

  70. Paul was not at all dependent upon his educational expertise,

  71. and I in no way diminish the importance of being a student,

  72. and particularly being a student of the Word of God.

  73. So when you find here Paul saying what he does,

  74. you have to ask yourself the question,

  75. why would Paul, as capable as he was,

  76. pray this way except for the fact that he saw a need in his life

  77. that could not be met on his own,

  78. and he was entirely dependent upon the work of God

  79. and the prayers of God's people.

  80. And so as we think about this subject,

  81. I also want you to understand

  82. that this issue of Paul praying for the enabling of the Spirit

  83. in the preaching of the Word of God

  84. actually fits in the larger context of the book of Ephesians.

  85. God's Word is a practical and logical explanation

  86. of his glory and his truth and his wisdom.

  87. And so as we look at this passage,

  88. we understand that just as the book of Ephesians

  89. lays out the work of God,

  90. in salvation and the work of Christ in redemption,

  91. and the work of the Spirit in progressive sanctification,

  92. so we find a small slice here

  93. in which Paul applies the ministry of the Spirit of God

  94. to the life of the believer,

  95. in particular to the man who stands at the front and preaches.

  96. I want you to understand I'm not up here to share.

  97. I am here to preach.

  98. Preaching is not a little exercise in anecdotal information.

  99. It is a declaring of the glory and the purpose of God,

  100. and it is explicitly tied to the Word of God.

  101. In all the years that I have had the privilege of serving as your shepherd

  102. and as your pastor, when I have come to this pulpit,

  103. I cannot remember a time that I have not brought this book,

  104. and this book has been the preeminent source that we have relied upon,

  105. and when it's all said and done,

  106. and you walk away, you can say,

  107. I heard what God had to say,

  108. and I could follow in my own Bible.

  109. Isn't that nice?

  110. And people will say,

  111. Well, Pastor, I heard...

  112. No, I'm really not that interested in what Tim Kenoyer thinks.

  113. Can I tell you that what I think today is not all that relevant,

  114. but what the Word of God has to say is lasting forever,

  115. settled in the heavens, and absolutely reliable.

  116. And we want to pay attention to the Word of God.

  117. Now, as a side note,

  118. given the culture that we live in

  119. and the increasing hazy,

  120. ill-advised thinking of people

  121. who claim to be Christians,

  122. understand this,

  123. that genuine salvation brings change.

  124. That's the second half of the book of Ephesians.

  125. And in Ephesians chapter 4 through 6 in particular,

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  126. this matter of change is explained to us

  127. in relationship to who it is that helps us be different.

  128. You see, salvation changes you,

  129. but then you also enjoy

  130. the enabling of the Spirit of God

  131. who dwells within and helps you be different.

  132. I love being able to tell people,

  133. you don't have to stay the way you used to be.

  134. And the reason you don't have to stay the way you used to be

  135. is not just because you happen to get a little book

  136. that explains all the to-dos and don't-dos,

  137. but you have not only the book,

  138. but you have the enabling of the Spirit of God

  139. who is at work in you,

  140. helping you grow and change.

  141. So if we've learned anything so far

  142. in our study in Ephesians chapter 4 through 6,

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  143. it is this,

  144. that effective Christian living

  145. is entirely dependent

  146. upon the work of the Spirit of God.

  147. Do you understand that?

  148. Effective Christian living

  149. is entirely dependent

  150. upon the work of the Spirit of God.

  151. Let me kind of rattle our way through this

  152. so you can see it clearly in your minds

  153. in our study.

  154. And pick up, if you will,

  155. in Ephesians chapter 5,

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  156. looking at verse 18.

  157. Chapter 4, chapter 5,

  158. hammer on this issue of the believer

  159. being an individual

  160. who lives a different kind of life.

  161. And that's one of the reasons why

  162. if you're sitting here this morning

  163. and you tell me,

  164. hey, I'm a Christian.

  165. I don't expect everything to have changed

  166. and for you to be in the point

  167. of sinless perfection.

  168. While I wish that doctrine were true,

  169. it's not.

  170. But I have to tell you,

  171. you should be able to see

  172. the evidence of change and growth

  173. and you should be able to say,

  174. I'm not what I used to be

  175. and I'm not what I someday will be.

  176. But I can track the evidence

  177. of God at work in me

  178. and that is the Spirit working in your life.

  179. Now let's follow.

  180. Ephesians chapter 5, verse 18,

    Ephesians 5:18

  181. and it says,

  182. don't be drunk with wine,

  183. for that's debauchery,

  184. but be filled with the Spirit.

  185. And actually what follows

  186. is an extended passage

  187. in which the apostle helps us understand

  188. what Spirit-filled living looks like.

  189. And there it says in verse 19,

  190. addressing one another in psalms and hymns

  191. and spiritual songs,

  192. singing and making melody

  193. to the Lord with your heart.

  194. So I can tell you,

  195. listen everybody,

  196. I can't tell for sure

  197. that you're Spirit-filled.

  198. But if you're sitting there

  199. with a grumpy look on your face

  200. while we are gathered

  201. for corporate worship,

  202. I don't really have to guess

  203. that the Spirit of God's not working.

  204. Now you can be singing

  205. and being very agitated

  206. or whatever and enthusiastic

  207. and that's not necessarily proof

  208. that the Spirit is at work in your life.

  209. But if you're sitting there

  210. like Mr. Grump,

  211. can I tell you something?

  212. You're not there.

  213. How do I know that?

  214. Ephesians chapter 5,

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  215. addressing one another

  216. in psalms and hymns

  217. and spiritual songs,

  218. singing and making melody

  219. to the Lord with your heart.

  220. Giving thanks,

  221. how often?

  222. Always.

  223. Can I tell you

  224. that not every one of us

  225. is born naturally

  226. with the glass all full.

  227. But when the Spirit of God

  228. is at work in us,

  229. the Spirit is the one

  230. that prompts us

  231. to take on life

  232. with a different perspective

  233. and a different view

  234. and as a result,

  235. we who by nature

  236. may be pretty unsettled

  237. and disconsolate,

  238. we are by His Spirit

  239. enabled to be joyful

  240. in the midst

  241. of the circumstances of life.

  242. Follow with me.

  243. There in verse 19,

  244. singing.

  245. Verse 20, joyful.

  246. Verse 21, submissive.

  247. And you look in verse 22 through 24

  248. and you find out

  249. that the godly wife

  250. is submissive to her husband.

  251. You find out

  252. that the godly husband

  253. is loving to his wife.

  254. And then we find

  255. as we work our way through

  256. and we come to this part

  257. in verse 18 of chapter 6,

  258. extended passage,

  259. he says,

  260. and listen,

  261. it's the Spirit

  262. that you really need

  263. to rely upon

  264. to pray effectively.

  265. And so it just follows logically

  266. that if we need

  267. the Holy Spirit

  268. to help us pray,

  269. Paul tags on to that

  270. and he says,

  271. and by the way,

  272. while you're praying,

  273. there are all kinds

  274. of things to pray for,

  275. but while you're praying

  276. in particular,

  277. pray for me,

  278. that I'd get out of prison,

  279. that my health would improve,

  280. that I'd win the lottery,

  281. that my,

  282. no, what's he say?

  283. He says,

  284. I just want you to pray

  285. about one particular thing.

  286. He says,

  287. I want you to pray

  288. that utterance

  289. would be given to me.

  290. And he's referring

  291. to the ministry

  292. of the Spirit of God

  293. as he preaches the word.

  294. And so I want you

  295. to understand this morning

  296. that all effective,

  297. God-honoring,

  298. Christ-exalting

  299. preaching in the Bible

  300. reflects its dependence

  301. upon the Spirit of God.

  302. That's true.

  303. Wherever you go,

  304. what page you turn to,

  305. be clear of this.

  306. Effective,

  307. Christ-exalting,

  308. God-honoring preaching

  309. relies upon the work

  310. of the Spirit of God.

  311. To illustrate that,

  312. let me point out

  313. that first of all,

  314. though Christ was

  315. the second person

  316. of the Trinity,

  317. nevertheless,

  318. in his earthly ministry,

  319. he was entirely dependent

  320. upon the Spirit of God

  321. in what he did

  322. and accomplished.

  323. Christ's preaching

  324. and Christ's life

  325. reflected the enabling

  326. of the Spirit

  327. in every aspect.

  328. Now, having made

  329. a statement like that,

  330. it would be fair

  331. for you sitting out there

  332. to say what?

  333. Well, amen would be

  334. a supposition

  335. that you're fully persuaded.

  336. Probably,

  337. until you're fully persuaded,

  338. what should you be

  339. thinking?

  340. I'm walking out here,

  341. not on water.

  342. What should you be thinking?

  343. Show me.

  344. You got that?

  345. Where is it in the Bible?

  346. You got that?

  347. The thought of God's people

  348. should always be this.

  349. Having heard you say it,

  350. Bubba,

  351. show me where it is.

  352. And that,

  353. we can say amen to, right?

  354. I want you to have the heart

  355. that as a congregation,

  356. whoever stands here,

  357. the thought you always have

  358. is what saith the Scriptures?

  359. Where is it in the Bible?

  360. I made the statement

  361. that Jesus,

  362. the second person

  363. of the Trinity,

  364. helped in His ministry

  365. by the Spirit of God,

  366. and you're out there

  367. thinking,

  368. yeah, well,

  369. show me.

  370. Well,

  371. having said it,

  372. let's give you

  373. a couple passages.

  374. Passages are a good thing.

  375. By the way,

  376. why do we carry our Bibles

  377. as Christians?

  378. Does anybody have an idea?

  379. Do we get extra points

  380. in heaven?

  381. Are extra sins canceled

  382. because you have your Bible

  383. in your hand this morning?

  384. What's the answer?

  385. Not in your life.

  386. Why do we carry our Bible?

  387. So,

  388. so we can look ourselves,

  389. right?

  390. Okay,

  391. turn in your Bibles

  392. to Matthew chapter 12,

    Matthew 12:18

  393. verse 18.

  394. What is pastor doing?

  395. He is just showing you

  396. that Jesus in His ministry

  397. was enabled by the Spirit of God.

  398. Matthew chapter 12,

    Matthew 12:18

  399. verse 18.

  400. Behold my servant

  401. whom I've chosen.

  402. This is referring to Jesus.

  403. Behold my servant

  404. whom I have chosen,

  405. my beloved

  406. with whom my soul

  407. is well pleased.

  408. I will put my spirit

  409. upon him

  410. and he will proclaim

  411. justice

  412. to the Gentiles.

  413. Do you know what that's saying?

  414. When Jesus ministered,

  415. how did he do it?

  416. He didn't do it

  417. by mere intellectual ability.

  418. He did it through

  419. the enabling

  420. of the Spirit of God.

  421. Let me have you look

  422. at another one

  423. very similar.

  424. You're in Matthew.

  425. Just go to Luke chapter 4,

    Luke 4:18

  426. verse 18.

  427. Luke chapter 4,

    Luke 4:18

  428. verse 18.

  429. I think you'd be

  430. really unnerved

  431. if I said go to

  432. John chapter 5,

    John 5:18

  433. verse 18.

  434. And I'm not going to.

  435. But Luke chapter 4,

    Luke 4:18

  436. verse 18.

  437. Here we have.

  438. Now get the scene.

  439. Jesus walks

  440. into the synagogue

  441. and they say to him,

  442. hey,

  443. do you have something

  444. to say?

  445. He takes the scroll

  446. and he reads it

  447. and he unrolls the scroll

  448. and he finds the place

  449. in Isaiah

  450. and here's what he reads.

  451. The Spirit of the Lord

  452. is upon me

  453. because he has anointed me

  454. to proclaim good news

  455. to the poor.

  456. He has sent me

  457. to proclaim liberty

  458. to the captives

  459. and the recovering

  460. of sight to the blind

  461. and to set at liberty

  462. those who are oppressed.

  463. As you were singing

  464. this morning,

  465. that last song

  466. that John led us in.

  467. And John,

  468. by the way,

  469. I appreciate your courage

  470. when we don't have it,

  471. call it off, right?

  472. Okay?

  473. I like that.

  474. We can sing another song

  475. and have a great blessing.

  476. But as you were singing,

  477. I wonder

  478. if what you were doing

  479. was kind of cross-referencing

  480. the singing of the word

  481. with passages of Scripture.

  482. Would that be a good thing to do

  483. and what's the answer?

  484. Do it all the time.

  485. Do it all the time.

  486. Anyway,

  487. here we have,

  488. talks about the fact

  489. that Jesus sent

  490. in the power of the Spirit

  491. and when he preached,

  492. he preached through

  493. the enabling of the Spirit of God.

  494. One theologian has said

  495. there is no place

  496. where Christ did not speak

  497. under the enabling

  498. of the Spirit of God.

  499. He relied upon the Spirit

  500. in his ministry.

  501. It wasn't just Jesus

  502. that did this.

  503. Apostolic preaching

  504. was also dependent

  505. upon the Spirit of God.

  506. Let me start out

  507. by saying this.

  508. If you will look

  509. in Acts chapter 1,

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  510. remember Jesus said

  511. you are to go to Jerusalem

  512. and what are you to do?

  513. Hey,

  514. grab your Bibles

  515. and head out into the streets

  516. and start in.

  517. Is that what he said?

  518. He says,

  519. wait there

  520. until you receive

  521. until you receive

  522. the Holy Spirit.

  523. Once you have

  524. this Holy Spirit

  525. go out and get to work

  526. and that's what they did

  527. and it was through

  528. the enabling of the Spirit

  529. in particular

  530. that New Testament

  531. preaching took place

  532. and I want you to look

  533. at a couple different places

  534. where that is true.

  535. Acts chapter 4,

    Acts 4:8

  536. verse 8.

  537. Acts chapter 4,

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  538. Then Peter filled

  539. with the Holy Spirit.

  540. Now why does it tell us

  541. that at the very beginning

  542. of Peter's sermon?

  543. What's it want us to know?

  544. Well, Peter,

  545. when he preached,

  546. didn't rely upon his

  547. grasp of what had taken place

  548. and it was not just

  549. a mere intellectual recitation

  550. of the facts

  551. of what had happened.

  552. It was something

  553. that was enabled

  554. by the Spirit of God.

  555. Look at Acts chapter 6,

    Acts 6:10

  556. verse 10.

  557. Acts chapter 6,

    Acts 6:10

  558. verse 10.

  559. But they could not withstand

  560. the wisdom

  561. and the Spirit

  562. with which he was speaking.

  563. Now who is this talking about?

  564. The first martyr,

  565. right?

  566. Stephen.

  567. And here he is.

  568. Preaching.

  569. And as a result,

  570. the Spirit of God at work,

  571. doing the convicting work

  572. and leading conviction

  573. sometimes leads to faith

  574. in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  575. In other times,

  576. it leads to rejection

  577. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  578. And I venture to say

  579. that there are some of you

  580. sitting here this morning

  581. that may not know

  582. the Lord Jesus.

  583. And as we are preaching

  584. the Word of God,

  585. your heart may be convicted

  586. to say,

  587. there's something missing.

  588. I don't know.

  589. I don't know the certainty

  590. of my eternal destiny.

  591. And I don't know

  592. that I have complete forgiveness

  593. for all of my sins

  594. because of the finished work

  595. of Christ.

  596. And there may be some of you

  597. here this morning

  598. that under the teaching

  599. and the preaching

  600. of the Word of God,

  601. you are drawn by the Spirit

  602. to realize

  603. you desperately need salvation

  604. and you trust in Him

  605. and you're saved.

  606. But there will be others of you

  607. whose heart

  608. is not turned

  609. and you resist

  610. the Holy Spirit

  611. and you say,

  612. hey, I don't like

  613. what I'm hearing.

  614. I'm uncomfortable

  615. with the idea

  616. that I can't work

  617. my way to heaven

  618. by doing A, B, C, D

  619. and you will resist.

  620. The Spirit's at work.

  621. We look at Acts chapter 7,

    Acts 7:55

  622. verse 55.

  623. But He,

  624. full of the Holy Spirit,

  625. gazed into heaven

  626. and saw the glory of God

  627. and Jesus standing

  628. by the right hand

  629. of the Father

  630. and He said,

  631. behold, I see the heavens

  632. opened and the Son of Man

  633. standing at the right hand

  634. of God

  635. and as Stephen preached

  636. his sermon,

  637. he did so

  638. with the enabling

  639. of the Spirit of God.

  640. Let me have you look

  641. at another passage

  642. and this is from Paul

  643. in 1 Corinthians chapter 2,

    1 Corinthians 2 chapter mention

  644. 1 Corinthians chapter 2,

    1 Corinthians 2:4

  645. verse 4.

  646. 1 Corinthians chapter 2,

    1 Corinthians 2:4

  647. verse 4.

  648. And my speech

  649. and my message

  650. were not in plausible

  651. words of wisdom.

  652. Now what does that mean?

  653. Does that mean

  654. that Paul came

  655. and his preaching

  656. was marked

  657. by stuttering

  658. and incomplete sentences

  659. and by just kind of

  660. kludgy kind of behavior?

  661. What do you think?

  662. No, that's not the point.

  663. But what he is saying

  664. is that my preaching

  665. was not the usual

  666. smooth kind of crafted

  667. presentation that all kind of,

  668. oh, it's a beautiful story

  669. and anecdotal

  670. and you walk out

  671. and you say,

  672. wasn't that a really nice story

  673. about the puppy

  674. that Sally found

  675. on the side of the road

  676. and she was really nice to?

  677. Can I tell you?

  678. I could tell you a story

  679. with the right emotional intonation

  680. and affection

  681. and you would think

  682. that Mary had a little lamb

  683. was really good preaching.

  684. Mary had a little lamb.

  685. Her fleece was white as snow.

  686. Do you follow that?

  687. And everywhere that Mary went,

  688. the lamb was,

  689. you know,

  690. I mean, hey,

  691. sometimes we get mixed up

  692. and Paul says,

  693. I didn't do that.

  694. So what did he do?

  695. Look at it.

  696. Look at it there.

  697. My speech and my message

  698. were not in plausible words

  699. of wisdom

  700. but in demonstration

  701. of the spirit

  702. and power.

  703. Listen to me.

  704. My preaching

  705. was in demonstration

  706. of the spirit

  707. and power.

  708. This is Paul.

  709. Well, I want you to understand

  710. it wasn't just Paul

  711. because if you turn now,

  712. we're going to look at Peter as well

  713. and turn to 1 Peter 1, verse 12

    1 Peter 1:12

  714. if you would please.

  715. 1 Peter 1, verse 12.

    1 Peter 1:12

  716. Oh, by the way,

  717. why are we tracking

  718. in our Bibles?

  719. Does anybody know?

  720. Why are we tracking

  721. in our Bibles?

  722. Why did you bring your Bible?

  723. Extra points in heaven?

  724. The answer is

  725. no, no, no

  726. just in case you forgot.

  727. We're tracking

  728. in our Bibles

  729. because you want to see

  730. whether or not

  731. what I'm saying is true.

  732. And by the way,

  733. listen to me,

  734. taking notes

  735. helps it stick

  736. in that little brain

  737. you have.

  738. Okay?

  739. You can write it

  740. on your hand.

  741. You can write it

  742. on the bulletin.

  743. You can write it

  744. on the pages

  745. of your wife's Bible.

  746. I don't care

  747. where you write it

  748. but just put it down

  749. so it's there.

  750. I don't try

  751. the wife's Bible

  752. but you know,

  753. okay.

  754. Anyway,

  755. we are looking now

  756. at 1 Peter 1,

    1 Peter 1:12

  757. verse 12.

  758. Hang on,

  759. hang on,

  760. hang on.

  761. Yeah,

  762. 1 Peter 1.

  763. Therefore,

  764. preparing your minds

  765. for action.

  766. I think I have

  767. made a mistake.

  768. No,

  769. I'm,

  770. okay,

  771. there it is,

  772. there it is.

  773. It was revealed

  774. to them

  775. that they were

  776. serving not themselves

  777. but you

  778. in the things

  779. that have now

  780. been announced

  781. to you

  782. through those

  783. who preach

  784. the good news

  785. to you

  786. by,

  787. what?

  788. Say it with me.

  789. The Holy Spirit.

  790. Here's Peter.

  791. Did Peter ever

  792. have a problem

  793. saying something

  794. that didn't need

  795. to be said

  796. and what's the answer?

  797. He was the,

  798. he was the foot

  799. in mouth apostle.

  800. If it probably

  801. didn't need to be said,

  802. Peter took a stab

  803. at it.

  804. But here he is

  805. explaining his preaching

  806. and he says,

  807. hey,

  808. I want you to understand

  809. something about

  810. my preaching.

  811. My preaching

  812. was by

  813. the Holy Spirit.

  814. And so it follows

  815. then that

  816. true gospel preaching

  817. should evidence

  818. the Spirit's

  819. work today

  820. just as

  821. he did

  822. during the time

  823. of the Lord Jesus Christ

  824. and his apostles.

  825. And why do I make

  826. that connection?

  827. Because here is

  828. the apostle praying

  829. and it's instructive

  830. to us,

  831. hey,

  832. pray for me.

  833. That is not

  834. just Paul

  835. but the long

  836. line of succession

  837. of men that

  838. have come

  839. and stood

  840. before the

  841. congregation

  842. of God's people

  843. and said,

  844. I am here

  845. to preach

  846. the word

  847. in accordance

  848. with the word

  849. of God

  850. and enabled

  851. by the Spirit

  852. of God

  853. and you said,

  854. yes,

  855. I want to hear

  856. what the Spirit

  857. has to say

  858. and I'm going to

  859. pray for you.

  860. so,

  861. pray,

  862. Lord Jesus,

  863. Holy Spirit,

  864. work as the

  865. vessel of clay

  866. before us

  867. today preaches

  868. your word.

  869. Do you follow

  870. that?

  871. That's what you

  872. should be doing.

  873. And all of God's

  874. people said,

  875. what?

  876. I got it.

  877. I don't need to say

  878. it out loud

  879. but how,

  880. do you understand?

  881. The point of preaching

  882. is to tell you

  883. what God thinks

  884. and then the follow

  885. up is God's

  886. people say,

  887. what?

  888. I got it.

  889. I understand.

  890. I'm going to do it.

  891. I'm going to do it

  892. whether he's wearing

  893. a tie and a suit

  894. or whether he's

  895. not wearing a tie.

  896. I want to hear

  897. the word

  898. and I'm going to

  899. pray that he

  900. makes it clear.

  901. So,

  902. what does

  903. preaching

  904. through the Holy

  905. Spirit look

  906. like?

  907. The question

  908. is extremely

  909. important.

  910. For there's a

  911. great deal of

  912. ignorance today

  913. and at worst

  914. there's deception

  915. regarding the

  916. ministry of the

  917. Holy Spirit.

  918. The church

  919. has tended

  920. to either

  921. completely tamp

  922. down the

  923. ministry of the

  924. Holy Spirit

  925. because of a

  926. fear of excess

  927. or on the other

  928. hand it just

  929. runs on

  930. unbridled

  931. all over the

  932. place and you

  933. can't tell

  934. what's going

  935. on.

  936. Some have

  937. been so afraid

  938. of excess

  939. that they've

  940. developed a

  941. slavish fear

  942. that has

  943. made them

  944. actually cold

  945. and suppressed

  946. and suspicious

  947. of anything

  948. that is ever

  949. delivered in

  950. any other

  951. tone than a

  952. monotone.

  953. And I have

  954. watched people

  955. who can with

  956. all good conscience

  957. kind of sit on

  958. their hands

  959. while they're

  960. worshipping the

  961. Lord of Glory

  962. and kind of

  963. be a little

  964. frumpy about

  965. the whole

  966. business but

  967. when they go

  968. to the baseball

  969. game for their

  970. own son they

  971. just go ballistic.

  972. Now here's my

  973. point.

  974. Who deserves

  975. more credit

  976. and more glory

  977. and more

  978. enthusiasm?

  979. Surprise.

  980. God.

  981. Right?

  982. Okay.

  983. We're alright

  984. here.

  985. On the other

  986. hand there are

  987. those who have

  988. overplayed the

  989. spirit to the

  990. point of being

  991. offensive to the

  992. Lord of Glory.

  993. I was struck

  994. last week by a

  995. post I saw on

  996. Facebook and I

  997. probably shouldn't

  998. read Facebook as

  999. often as I do

  1000. because it

  1001. sometimes causes

  1002. me to get

  1003. exercise but I

  1004. like this one.

  1005. It said you

  1006. don't see faith

  1007. healers working

  1008. in hospitals for

  1009. the same reason

  1010. you don't find

  1011. psychics winning

  1012. lotteries.

  1013. And I thought

  1014. duh.

  1015. That makes

  1016. sense.

  1017. Do you

  1018. follow that?

  1019. No.

  1020. Okay.

  1021. We're talking

  1022. about spirit

  1023. filled preaching.

  1024. The enabling

  1025. of the spirit

  1026. in preaching

  1027. is not

  1028. a display

  1029. of emotion.

  1030. How many

  1031. of you realize

  1032. that emotions

  1033. can be faked?

  1034. A couple

  1035. weeks ago

  1036. I happened

  1037. to see a

  1038. man walking

  1039. past our

  1040. window and

  1041. he banged

  1042. on the

  1043. our ladies

  1044. were working

  1045. on VBS

  1046. kind of all

  1047. this kind of

  1048. thing going

  1049. on and I

  1050. saw him go

  1051. by and we

  1052. don't like our

  1053. ladies to be

  1054. accosted unnecessarily

  1055. so I heard

  1056. actually one of

  1057. them opened the

  1058. door and said

  1059. the pastor is

  1060. down there and

  1061. I let him in

  1062. and he came

  1063. into my office

  1064. and he shared

  1065. the most his

  1066. name was Matt

  1067. I think it

  1068. was he shared

  1069. the most just

  1070. the most and

  1071. it was challenging

  1072. for me you know

  1073. me I'm just

  1074. kind of bland

  1075. and it's just

  1076. everything's cool

  1077. and I'm this guy

  1078. is talking to me

  1079. about he he

  1080. started out by

  1081. saying hey

  1082. would you do

  1083. the funeral for

  1084. my niece?

  1085. Of course I

  1086. would I mean

  1087. funerals are like

  1088. drive-by shooting

  1089. opportunities for a

  1090. pastor I get to

  1091. preach the gospel

  1092. I love it

  1093. and I said sure

  1094. I'd be glad to

  1095. he says well

  1096. what will you

  1097. charge?

  1098. And you know

  1099. what I said?

  1100. Nothing!

  1101. I said if you

  1102. let me say

  1103. what's on my

  1104. heart I'll

  1105. preach it

  1106. and then he

  1107. started sharing

  1108. the sad story

  1109. of his niece

  1110. that had a

  1111. shunt and she

  1112. was in

  1113. children's hospital

  1114. and she two

  1115. days before her

  1116. surgery she had

  1117. died she'd had

  1118. a brain

  1119. aneurysm and

  1120. passed away

  1121. and the guy

  1122. was crying

  1123. and you know

  1124. how I was

  1125. doing I was

  1126. grabbing Kleenex

  1127. and giving them

  1128. to him and

  1129. I'm

  1130. and

  1131. he said

  1132. well this

  1133. this funeral is

  1134. going to be on

  1135. Sheddinger or

  1136. West Broad

  1137. well I've done

  1138. lots of funerals

  1139. there

  1140. and I said

  1141. okay well I'll

  1142. call the funeral

  1143. director to let

  1144. them know that

  1145. I'll do it

  1146. you know I mean

  1147. hey we got a

  1148. pastor on board

  1149. he'll take care

  1150. of it

  1151. he'll do the

  1152. service

  1153. and

  1154. I said

  1155. what time is

  1156. it?

  1157. Without

  1158. hesitation he said

  1159. calling hours are

  1160. four to six

  1161. and seven to nine

  1162. on Thursday

  1163. and the funeral

  1164. is at 11 o'clock

  1165. on Friday

  1166. I'll be there

  1167. I said but let

  1168. me call

  1169. because I know

  1170. they'll call me

  1171. and I'll go ahead

  1172. and call them

  1173. guys crying

  1174. handed off Kleenex

  1175. as you know

  1176. Connie we need

  1177. more in my office

  1178. you know it's

  1179. like come on

  1180. we're bringing

  1181. them on

  1182. and I'm

  1183. caught up in

  1184. this

  1185. I said well

  1186. what was the

  1187. name of the

  1188. lady that

  1189. that you

  1190. talked to

  1191. and he gave

  1192. it to me

  1193. and he even

  1194. rattled off a

  1195. phone number

  1196. so I called

  1197. it

  1198. it was a

  1199. construction

  1200. company

  1201. and so I'm

  1202. sitting at my

  1203. desk and I

  1204. fired up my

  1205. computer and

  1206. guess what I

  1207. did

  1208. I googled

  1209. Schedinger's

  1210. West Broad

  1211. and I

  1212. I

  1213. called

  1214. by the way

  1215. he had already

  1216. gone out to

  1217. his car to

  1218. find the phone

  1219. number and

  1220. couldn't find

  1221. it and so

  1222. we did

  1223. second stage

  1224. and he says

  1225. just a minute

  1226. I need to

  1227. use the

  1228. bathroom

  1229. I thought

  1230. not a

  1231. problem

  1232. I'm talking

  1233. to people

  1234. at Schedinger's

  1235. and I

  1236. said hey

  1237. you have a

  1238. funeral scheduled

  1239. for Friday

  1240. right at

  1241. 11 o'clock

  1242. for a little

  1243. girl 10 years

  1244. old that died

  1245. at children's

  1246. high

  1247. no we

  1248. don't

  1249. really

  1250. and I

  1251. looked out

  1252. the window

  1253. because I

  1254. the car

  1255. wasn't there

  1256. anymore

  1257. he'd gone

  1258. hey listen

  1259. to me

  1260. emotions

  1261. are not

  1262. a necessary

  1263. indicator

  1264. of the

  1265. spirit of

  1266. God

  1267. at work

  1268. nor is

  1269. stomping

  1270. and spitting

  1271. that reaches

  1272. the fourth

  1273. pew

  1274. do you

  1275. follow that

  1276. nor is

  1277. the exaltation

  1278. of the

  1279. worm

  1280. only one

  1281. person gets

  1282. to be the

  1283. hero

  1284. in the

  1285. story

  1286. when the

  1287. spirit of

  1288. God

  1289. is at

  1290. work

  1291. and it's

  1292. not

  1293. the poor

  1294. instrument

  1295. that God

  1296. chooses to

  1297. put in the

  1298. front

  1299. so what

  1300. does

  1301. spirit

  1302. enabled

  1303. preaching

  1304. look like

  1305. and I

  1306. want you

  1307. to understand

  1308. that this

  1309. morning I'm

  1310. not going

  1311. to cover

  1312. all aspects

  1313. of it

  1314. but I do

  1315. want to

  1316. say this

  1317. that for

  1318. one

  1319. the enabling

  1320. of the

  1321. spirit of

  1322. God

  1323. in preaching

  1324. brings

  1325. first of

  1326. all

  1327. conviction

  1328. conviction

  1329. and you

  1330. have heard me

  1331. say over

  1332. and over

  1333. again that

  1334. the purpose

  1335. of preaching

  1336. is not

  1337. to entertain

  1338. and for

  1339. that one

  1340. of the main

  1341. reasons that

  1342. you don't

  1343. hear a lot

  1344. of anecdotal

  1345. stories the

  1346. exception being

  1347. the emotional

  1348. issue that I

  1349. gave this

  1350. morning at

  1351. the heart

  1352. of it it

  1353. is the

  1354. exaltation

  1355. of Christ

  1356. that brings

  1357. conviction

  1358. because it

  1359. puts people

  1360. on the spot

  1361. of saying

  1362. yes or

  1363. no to

  1364. God

  1365. and so

  1366. conviction

  1367. in John

    John 16 chapter mention

  1368. chapter 16

  1369. and by the

  1370. way should

  1371. the Lord

  1372. Terry and I

  1373. get to

  1374. John chapter

    John 16 chapter mention

  1375. 16 we

  1376. are going

  1377. to spend

  1378. hello

  1379. several weeks

  1380. working through

  1381. John as

  1382. he lays

  1383. out in

  1384. wonderful

  1385. clarity the

  1386. ministry of

  1387. the spirit

  1388. of God

  1389. and the

  1390. life of

  1391. the believer

  1392. John chapter

    John 16:8–11

  1393. 16 verse

  1394. 8 through

  1395. 11 explains

  1396. that one of

  1397. the ministries

  1398. of the spirit

  1399. how do you

  1400. know the

  1401. spirit is

  1402. working when

  1403. you are

  1404. sitting there

  1405. and the

  1406. spirit of

  1407. God is

  1408. kind of

  1409. tapping on

  1410. your shoulder

  1411. and say

  1412. that's got

  1413. to change

  1414. that's a

  1415. spirit

  1416. secondly

  1417. spiritual

  1418. enablement

  1419. brings about

  1420. understanding and

  1421. clarity and I

  1422. want you to

  1423. turn back in

  1424. your Bible

  1425. to the

  1426. passage in

  1427. 1st Corinthians

  1428. chapter 4

  1429. I'm sorry

  1430. 1st Corinthians

  1431. chapter 2

  1432. verse 4

  1433. through 16

  1434. I'm not going

  1435. to take all

  1436. the passage

  1437. and lay it

  1438. out for you

  1439. but understand

  1440. this is an

  1441. extended picture

  1442. of how the

  1443. spirit of God

  1444. works in

  1445. bringing clarity

  1446. to our

  1447. understanding

  1448. how many of

  1449. you like me

  1450. grew up in

  1451. homes where

  1452. you had a

  1453. brother or

  1454. sister who

  1455. just didn't

  1456. get it

  1457. I don't

  1458. understand

  1459. I remember

  1460. my dad

  1461. having faith

  1462. I mean

  1463. dad worked

  1464. like a

  1465. he was the

  1466. only surgeon

  1467. in the hospital

  1468. out there

  1469. in India

  1470. and he

  1471. worked his

  1472. heart out

  1473. but he

  1474. would come

  1475. home to

  1476. have devotions

  1477. with us

  1478. and sometimes

  1479. go back

  1480. to work

  1481. and I

  1482. remember

  1483. our family

  1484. devotions

  1485. were a

  1486. robust

  1487. issue

  1488. he could

  1489. eat in

  1490. three or

  1491. four minutes

  1492. I mean

  1493. literally

  1494. but when

  1495. it came

  1496. time to

  1497. family

  1498. devotions

  1499. there were

  1500. sometimes I

  1501. thought they

  1502. went on

  1503. forever

  1504. but I'll

  1505. tell you

  1506. what

  1507. our family

  1508. devotions

  1509. were a

  1510. wonderful

  1511. time

  1512. ultimately

  1513. of convicting

  1514. and drawing

  1515. me to the

  1516. cross

  1517. and drawing

  1518. two of

  1519. my sisters

  1520. but I

  1521. have a

  1522. brother and

  1523. a sister

  1524. that don't

  1525. know Christ

  1526. and I

  1527. thought

  1528. why didn't

  1529. you get

  1530. it

  1531. I want

  1532. you to

  1533. understand

  1534. what we

  1535. find in

  1536. this passage

  1537. pick up

  1538. if you

  1539. will

  1540. in verse

  1541. 12

  1542. now we

  1543. have received

  1544. not the

  1545. spirit of

  1546. the world

  1547. but the

  1548. spirit who

  1549. is from

  1550. God

  1551. that we

  1552. might

  1553. understand

  1554. the things

  1555. freely given

  1556. us by

  1557. God

  1558. if you're

  1559. sitting here

  1560. this morning

  1561. and the

  1562. truth of

  1563. the matter

  1564. is is that

  1565. the scriptures

  1566. are just

  1567. going right

  1568. over top

  1569. of your

  1570. head and

  1571. you're not

  1572. understanding

  1573. it might be

  1574. that you

  1575. do not have

  1576. the enabling

  1577. of the

  1578. spirit of

  1579. God

  1580. to get

  1581. it

  1582. now does

  1583. that mean

  1584. that every

  1585. time we

  1586. who are

  1587. filled with

  1588. the spirit

  1589. or indwelt

  1590. I should

  1591. say are

  1592. going to be

  1593. sitting there

  1594. and it's

  1595. just all

  1596. going to be

  1597. clear no

  1598. no

  1599. no

  1600. because you

  1601. can be

  1602. sitting there

  1603. with unconfessed

  1604. sin as a

  1605. believer you

  1606. can be

  1607. quenching

  1608. the spirit

  1609. but it is

  1610. the spirit

  1611. and we find

  1612. this in this

  1613. passage in

  1614. 12 verse

  1615. 14 it says

  1616. the natural

  1617. person does

  1618. not accept

  1619. the things of

  1620. the spirit

  1621. of God

  1622. for they are

  1623. folly to

  1624. him and he

  1625. is not able

  1626. to understand

  1627. them because

  1628. they are

  1629. spiritually

  1630. discerned

  1631. the spiritual

  1632. person judges

  1633. all things but

  1634. he is himself

  1635. to be judged

  1636. by no one

  1637. for who

  1638. has understood

  1639. the mind

  1640. of the Lord

  1641. so as to

  1642. instruct him

  1643. but we have

  1644. the mind

  1645. of Christ

  1646. so spirit

  1647. enabled

  1648. preaching

  1649. brings about

  1650. clarity

  1651. and understanding

  1652. there's a third

  1653. thing that I want

  1654. you to pick up

  1655. on this morning

  1656. as we think

  1657. about what

  1658. does spirit

  1659. filled

  1660. and enabled

  1661. preaching do

  1662. and I want

  1663. you to turn

  1664. to John

    John 16:14

  1665. chapter 16

  1666. verse 14

  1667. I'm going

  1668. to give

  1669. extra points

  1670. for anybody

  1671. who as they

  1672. read John

  1673. 16 14

  1674. can also

  1675. think about

  1676. another

  1677. illustration

  1678. of the

  1679. ministry

  1680. of the

  1681. spirit

  1682. in John

  1683. the Baptist

  1684. are we

  1685. doing okay

  1686. right now

  1687. you're tracking

  1688. me

  1689. extra points

  1690. deacons will

  1691. give cookies

  1692. to the person

  1693. who can get

  1694. this one

  1695. stop

  1696. I'm going

  1697. off page

  1698. here

  1699. but here

  1700. we go

  1701. John

    John 16 chapter mention

  1702. chapter 16

  1703. looking at

  1704. verse 14

  1705. he will

  1706. glorify

  1707. me

  1708. for he

  1709. will take

  1710. what is

  1711. mine

  1712. and declare

  1713. it to

  1714. you

  1715. here's the

  1716. characteristic

  1717. of spirit

  1718. enabled

  1719. preaching

  1720. it lifts

  1721. up the

  1722. glory and

  1723. the supremacy

  1724. of Christ

  1725. and causes

  1726. us to see

  1727. him in all

  1728. his radiant

  1729. splendor

  1730. and to desire

  1731. him above

  1732. all others

  1733. that's

  1734. spirit

  1735. filled

  1736. preaching

  1737. I think

  1738. about the

  1739. psalm

  1740. 73

  1741. by the way

  1742. do you know

  1743. how the

  1744. psalm starts

  1745. 73

  1746. it's the

  1747. grumbler's

  1748. psalm

  1749. did you

  1750. follow that

  1751. I looked

  1752. around at

  1753. all the

  1754. ungodly

  1755. people and

  1756. they were

  1757. doing really

  1758. good

  1759. until I

  1760. went into

  1761. the temple

  1762. and there

  1763. I understood

  1764. their end

  1765. and then

  1766. it ends

  1767. up it

  1768. says

  1769. who

  1770. do I

  1771. have

  1772. in heaven

  1773. but you

  1774. and there

  1775. is none

  1776. that I

  1777. desire

  1778. beside you

  1779. spirit

  1780. enabled

  1781. preaching

  1782. lifts

  1783. up

  1784. Jesus

  1785. and by

  1786. the way

  1787. when we

  1788. lift up

  1789. Jesus

  1790. what happens

  1791. to us

  1792. huh

  1793. remember I

  1794. talked about

  1795. John the

  1796. Baptist

  1797. what did

  1798. he say

  1799. he said

  1800. he must

  1801. come on

  1802. help me

  1803. he must

  1804. increase

  1805. that's an

  1806. imperative

  1807. you know

  1808. what an

  1809. imperative

  1810. is

  1811. it's got

  1812. to be

  1813. he has

  1814. to be

  1815. exalted

  1816. and when

  1817. you don't

  1818. exalt

  1819. Christ

  1820. you stand

  1821. in the

  1822. way

  1823. of the

  1824. imperative

  1825. of God

  1826. who wants

  1827. to make

  1828. him

  1829. supreme

  1830. so

  1831. what do

  1832. you do

  1833. I want

  1834. you to

  1835. understand

  1836. that when

  1837. you gather

  1838. together as

  1839. God's people

  1840. to listen to

  1841. the preaching

  1842. of the word

  1843. of God

  1844. you are

  1845. to pray

  1846. for the

  1847. man who

  1848. will do

  1849. it

  1850. that he

  1851. does it

  1852. through the

  1853. enabling

  1854. of the

  1855. spirit

  1856. of God

  1857. does that

  1858. make sense

  1859. and all

  1860. God's people

  1861. said I've

  1862. heard what

  1863. God has

  1864. to say

  1865. and this

  1866. will be

  1867. the characteristic

  1868. of my

  1869. prayer life

  1870. when I

  1871. gather

  1872. to worship

  1873. corporately

  1874. from here

  1875. until the

  1876. day that

  1877. God takes

  1878. me home

  1879. when I hear

  1880. the preaching

  1881. of the word

  1882. of God

  1883. my prayer

  1884. is going

  1885. to be

  1886. God you

  1887. help that

  1888. guy up

  1889. there

  1890. that he

  1891. preaches

  1892. through the

  1893. power

  1894. and the

  1895. enabling

  1896. of the

  1897. spirit

  1898. of God

  1899. and all

  1900. God's

  1901. people said

  1902. let's close

  1903. in prayer

  1904. together

  1905. You
