  1. I would like you to turn your Bibles this morning to Ephesians chapter 6 verse 24.

    Ephesians 6:24

  2. ! And Pastor Saul has rightly identified the fact that this is the last sermon at this point in the book of Ephesians.

  3. Lord willing, next Sunday it will be my blessing and my privilege to join you in opening the book of John and beginning to preach in John chapter 1 verse 1.

    John 1:1

  4. I do want to explain by way of introduction that there is a reason that preaching in an expositional fashion begins with John 1 verse 1 or Ephesians 1 verse 1 and carries through to the end.

    John 1:1 Ephesians 1:1

  5. And that the timing of the sequence of sermons is not preordained.

  6. I believe fully that the Word of God is to be taken in its entirety.

  7. I believe that preaching, which is the passionate declaring of the truth of God, is to be something that fundamentally is dependent upon the text.

  8. And at the end of the day, when I make a statement in the passage or in the process of preaching, one of the things that you should be able to do in every case is you should be able to connect that statement,

  9. even where there is an illustration, it should have linkage back to the Scriptures themselves.

  10. When someone comes to this pulpit, they come in some sense with an obligation, with a responsibility of saying,

  11. Thus saith the Lord.

  12. I am not an Old Testament prophet.

  13. And the best I can do when I say, Thus saith the Lord, is say, Here it is.

  14. You can read it for yourself and you can see what God has to say to you.

  15. I want you to understand this morning that the words of God are supremely important.

  16. We underestimate the importance of words other than when we are zinged and dinged by them.

  17. Do you understand what I'm saying?

  18. They fall sometimes all too carelessly from my lips and I would rather suspect from others' lips.

  19. God has said that words are supremely important and I want you to understand that it was by His Word that the universe was formed out of nothing.

  20. I think of one other illustration.

  21. I was reading earlier in the book of Ezekiel where Ezekiel the prophet is given that very, very sad responsibility of making it clear to God's people that He's done messing with them

  22. and He is going to discipline them for a long time.

  23. I remember with my children that one of the things they wanted to know when we were going to the place of judgment.

  24. How many of you know what I mean by that?

  25. Our protocol in my family was that I would usually have to go and pray so I could kind of balance my thoughts and my heart and be reasonable in the process.

  26. And I wanted them to spend some time deliberating upon the offense or issue and whatever.

  27. And then we would come together and we'd have a little conversation and then I would go somewhere privately so we could deal with this more directly.

  28. And one of the questions that my sons were more inclined to this, they were all about, so how many times?

  29. Do you follow that?

  30. How many times?

  31. I would say to them, eventually it dawned on me, early on I'd say, well, there will be three.

  32. And they'd be counting.

  33. And they would kind of grit their teeth and take the three and it, how many of you know as parents that sometimes you know you're not getting through with three?

  34. And I remember the first time that having given the diagnosis in advance when I decided it was time to add a few for the sake of impact, my son said to me, that's more than you said.

  35. And that was the last time that I ever advised them in advance of what was coming.

  36. In Ezekiel, God says you're going to catch it for a long time.

  37. And Ezekiel is broken as he considers the burden of what God is going to do to his people.

  38. And then God says, I want you to see this valley of dried bones.

  39. We are having all kinds of microphone issues, and I am the contributor to most of them.

  40. God says, I want you to see this valley of dried bones.

  41. And God says to Ezekiel, can these bones live again?

  42. I love what Ezekiel says.

  43. King James, he says, thou knowest, Lord.

  44. In other words, it's up to you.

  45. I like that.

  46. But then God says, listen, speak to them.

  47. We underestimate the power of the word of God.

  48. And so this morning, as we take this passage in hand, I ask that you pray.

  49. That the Spirit of God may take these words and have them make a difference in your life.

  50. Let me read them.

  51. Grace to all who love our Lord Jesus Christ with love incorruptible.

  52. Father God, we are right to be dependent upon your Spirit this morning.

  53. And to plead with you with all humility and with confessed inadequacy that both the hearing and the declaration of the word of God,

  54. apart from the power of the Spirit, are much like what is recorded in 1 Corinthians 13,

  55. where it says, I'm just a clanging cymbal or a banging gong.

  56. And so we would ask that you would take your word and that it would be heard by your people.

  57. And the effect of your word on the hearts of people that know the Lord Jesus Christ

  58. would be evident in the progressive transformation that is described in 2 Corinthians 3, verse 18,

    2 Corinthians 3:18

  59. that beholding as in a mirror the face of our Lord Jesus, we grow from glory to glory.

  60. And that's by the Spirit.

  61. And we ask this in your precious name.

  62. Amen.

  63. I guess it's no accident that Paul closes out the book of Ephesians with the word grace.

  64. And that's what we find here.

  65. Verse 24, it says,

  66. Grace be with all who love our Lord Jesus Christ with love incorruptible.

  67. And I want to appeal to you this morning that while it is the last verse and this is the last sermon,

  68. by no means should it be something that we kind of, well, let's get on with it.

  69. We're going to do some other book later and move on through it.

  70. No, no, no.

  71. The words are supremely important to you today.

  72. And the apostle, as he was instructed by the Spirit of God, said,

  73. Hey, listen, I want to close off with this profound central thought in the life of the church at Ephesus.

  74. And so here he is using the word grace.

  75. And we recognize that it is a word that if I were to track its significance through the book of Ephesians,

  76. we would find that Paul used it over and over again.

  77. I will at least recognize for you that it's the way he began the book.

  78. Over there in Ephesians chapter 1, I think it is in verse 3 or 2,

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  79. it says,

  80. Paul, an apostle to the saints, grace to you.

  81. And so I want you to understand that if we're really going to grasp the significance of this word,

  82. while it's so brief and we have a tendency to gloss over it,

  83. I want you to recognize that, first of all,

  84. grace must be understood against the backdrop of man's condition.

  85. The truth is, is before the Bible tells us the good news,

  86. the Bible tells us the bad news.

  87. It tells us the ugly reality of the heart that we have,

  88. and it recognizes for us, whether we're inclined to it or not,

  89. to grab a hold of the truth that apart from God doing something in us,

  90. we are beyond measure, inadequate, insignificant, ineffective,

  91. in bringing about anything of eternal value in our soul.

  92. I want you to think with me of just how Paul plays this out,

  93. and we want to take a look at Ephesians chapter 2, verse 1 through 5,

    Ephesians 2:1–5

  94. where we find a fairly robust argument to help us understand just how bad the news is.

  95. I'm not going to take the time of fleshing all of it out,

  96. but recognize as we look at this passage, Ephesians chapter 2, verse 1, it says,

    Ephesians 2:1

  97. And you were dead in the trespasses and sins.

  98. How dead is dead?

  99. I want you to understand that dead is beyond any possible redemption,

  100. or any remedy, or any resuscitation.

  101. When a person is genuinely dead, they are absolutely incapable of doing anything at all.

  102. The idea that some people have, that salvation is a partnering where God does something and man does something,

  103. has no basis in Scripture.

  104. Now, is it true that we are responsible for responding to the Gospel?

  105. Absolutely, without question.

  106. And the Scripture is clear on that.

  107. But mark this, it is the work of God that makes us respondable.

  108. And as we look at this passage and mark what it says,

  109. Paul uses one of the very, very graphic indicators of just how bad the unregenerate heart is.

  110. He says,

  111. You were dead.

  112. And dead men cannot help themselves.

  113. He says,

  114. How many of you, when you listen to the news,

  115. find yourself appalled at the world we live in,

  116. and the absolute depravity that you see everywhere you turn?

  117. This last week, jets shot out of the sky by rebels or by Russia.

  118. We don't know at this point the fact.

  119. But mark it, what is going on now is that whoever was responsible,

  120. instead of saying,

  121. Man, I messed up,

  122. and having a humble and a contrite heart and saying,

  123. That was wrong to do.

  124. Do you know what's going on?

  125. Everybody's trying to do their best to cover what's going on and hide the truth.

  126. And it's not just in Russia that that kind of behavior is going on.

  127. The Bible makes it undeniably clear that we in our sinful state,

  128. mark it,

  129. we are dead in sins.

  130. That's what we find in the passage.

  131. We are slaves to Satan in our passions.

  132. And furthermore, as we look at it here,

  133. it says there in verse 3,

  134. it says,

  135. We were by nature children of wrath.

  136. In other words,

  137. we are doomed to eternal judgment.

  138. Have you ever wondered why the unbelievers seemingly can get away

  139. with some things that believers cannot get away with?

  140. You ever remarked that?

  141. The fact of the matter is,

  142. is that the condemned man gets his last meal.

  143. And God deals with his children on a profoundly different basis

  144. than he deals with unbelievers.

  145. He, for a large part,

  146. allows unbelievers to kind of bumble along in their wickedness,

  147. and eventually they face the judgment.

  148. God, in his long-suffering patience,

  149. allows far more than you or I would.

  150. Now listen carefully to me.

  151. Until we stop and realize how much he has allowed for us,

  152. and then we are sympathetic,

  153. and when we pray for those who are caught in their sin,

  154. our prayer should be this way.

  155. Lord, be as merciful with them as you have been with me.

  156. Paul says,

  157. listen,

  158. the grace

  159. that God has given to you

  160. is something that is appreciated against the backdrop

  161. of the darkness of depravity and sin.

  162. There's another fact that I think we need to understand

  163. as we think about the matter of God's grace,

  164. and that is this,

  165. that grace is Christocentric.

  166. And what I mean by that

  167. is that grace is all about the Lord Jesus Christ.

  168. And understanding God's grace

  169. and appreciating God's grace

  170. cannot be separated from

  171. getting a hold of the beauty of the Lord Jesus Christ himself

  172. and being affected by him.

  173. Let me put it this way.

  174. Grace

  175. really refers to the unmerited favor and work of God

  176. in Christ Jesus.

  177. Let me have you look at a couple different passages

  178. to kind of track this if you would.

  179. And I strongly encourage you to follow in your own Bible

  180. so you can allow the text

  181. to resonate with your heart

  182. and you can look at it

  183. and identify what's being said.

  184. Turn to Titus chapter 2 verse 11.

    Titus 2:11

  185. Titus chapter 2 verse 11.

    Titus 2:11

  186. For the grace of God has appeared

  187. bringing salvation for all people.

  188. Well, what was the appearance of grace?

  189. Was it some kind of aura?

  190. How many of you have ever seen pictures

  191. of the Aurea Borealis

  192. or however it's said?

  193. You know, the wonderful night sky

  194. over Alaska and over the polar region.

  195. The grace of God that has appeared

  196. is not talking about some kind of vision out there abstractly.

  197. It's talking about the reality of the Christ himself

  198. coming to us.

  199. Over in John chapter 1.

    John 1 chapter mention

  200. See, you knew I would get there, didn't you?

  201. John chapter 1.

    John 1 chapter mention

  202. It just happened to work out that way.

  203. But John chapter 1.

    John 1 chapter mention

  204. I want you to listen

  205. as we look at a verse

  206. that we won't get to in the first several weeks.

  207. Verse 14.

  208. And the word became flesh

  209. and dwelt among us

  210. and we have seen his glory.

  211. Glory as of the only Son from the Father

  212. full of grace and truth.

  213. That word full that is used there

  214. talks about pleroma.

  215. It means absolutely packed

  216. with all there is of grace and truth.

  217. Jesus Christ

  218. was not a personification

  219. of the grace and truth of God.

  220. He is the fullness

  221. of the grace of God.

  222. It goes on to say in verse 15,

  223. John bore witness about him and cried,

  224. This was he of whom I said,

  225. He who comes after me ranks before me

  226. because he was before me.

  227. And from his fullness

  228. we have all received

  229. grace upon grace.

  230. grace.

  231. You know what it's saying?

  232. It is through the Lord Jesus Christ

  233. that we have received

  234. the fullness

  235. of the grace of God

  236. that is packed in

  237. upon our lives

  238. beyond measure.

  239. How many of you

  240. when you want to emphasize something

  241. say the word more than once?

  242. Your children.

  243. You say this is really

  244. what?

  245. Really, really

  246. important.

  247. This is very, very

  248. hot.

  249. When we have hot food

  250. we will say

  251. to family members

  252. that are eating with us,

  253. this is,

  254. you know,

  255. this is the pleban

  256. and this is the generic version

  257. to be eaten by people

  258. that are not of our persuasion.

  259. But this,

  260. talking about the curry

  261. that's real,

  262. is really, really hot.

  263. Judith refers to it

  264. as smoking.

  265. Okay?

  266. We emphasize

  267. with kind of doubling up

  268. and so

  269. in John

  270. the apostle says

  271. we have,

  272. from his fullness,

  273. we have all received

  274. grace upon grace.

  275. It is in the Lord Jesus Christ

  276. in his person

  277. that we receive

  278. the fullness

  279. of what God has for us

  280. and grasping that

  281. means that our heart

  282. is touched by the reality

  283. and the sweetness

  284. of the person

  285. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  286. In another way

  287. we could say

  288. that grace is the full

  289. and effective

  290. one-way love

  291. of God

  292. in Christ Jesus.

  293. I want you to think

  294. with me about that.

  295. Grace is the full

  296. and effective

  297. one-way love

  298. of God

  299. in Christ Jesus.

  300. Now I want you to think

  301. with me about that

  302. because for the most part

  303. we have a great tendency

  304. to have our love

  305. governed to a certain degree

  306. by what we're getting

  307. out of the investment.

  308. How many of you

  309. would admit that publicly

  310. and say,

  311. that's me?

  312. No,

  313. we wouldn't.

  314. But hey,

  315. when people behave

  316. in an unloving fashion

  317. towards us,

  318. what often happens

  319. to our love?

  320. What happens?

  321. If it diminishes

  322. significantly

  323. then I would have to say

  324. that that love

  325. that we have professed

  326. at one point

  327. or another

  328. really doesn't have

  329. a close connection

  330. with the love

  331. that comes from Christ.

  332. Christ's love for us

  333. is a love

  334. that is one way

  335. in its affection

  336. and care for us.

  337. And I think it's important

  338. for us to recognize

  339. just the nature of this.

  340. So when Paul here

  341. makes that statement

  342. that we enjoy

  343. the grace of God

  344. he is speaking about

  345. the way in which

  346. Christ loves us.

  347. So when Paul closes off

  348. this wonderful book

  349. by using the word grace

  350. as a summary

  351. he really is using it

  352. in one sense

  353. to remind us

  354. of the wonderful fact

  355. that our salvation

  356. is not the work

  357. of human effort

  358. and none of us

  359. who enjoy

  360. genuine conversion

  361. can say,

  362. hey listen,

  363. and by the way

  364. I earned that

  365. you don't know

  366. how much I suffered

  367. to get it.

  368. Those who appreciate

  369. the grace of God

  370. are always humbled

  371. by the reality

  372. that what they have

  373. has nothing to do

  374. with who they are

  375. or what they've done

  376. but they are struck

  377. by the reality

  378. that salvation

  379. has come to them

  380. by virtue

  381. of the grace of God.

  382. Well with that said

  383. let's take a look

  384. at the second part

  385. of this passage

  386. and mark that

  387. God's grace

  388. works in such a fashion

  389. that it produces

  390. a difference

  391. in the heart

  392. of the person

  393. who is a genuine believer

  394. and I think that

  395. it's very interesting

  396. that Paul

  397. here at the very last

  398. how many of you know

  399. that when you're coming

  400. towards the end

  401. of your instructions

  402. or your lesson

  403. where your children

  404. or whoever

  405. you always try

  406. to press it together

  407. to make it pretty simple

  408. so you can get their hand

  409. they can get their hands

  410. around it.

  411. Grace

  412. and then mark

  413. what he says

  414. be with all

  415. who love

  416. our Lord Jesus Christ

  417. with love

  418. incorruptible.

  419. Grace

  420. that is of God

  421. produces

  422. something

  423. that Paul

  424. wants us

  425. to understand.

  426. Grace

  427. to those

  428. who love

  429. the Lord

  430. Jesus Christ.

  431. Now let's stop

  432. just for a minute

  433. so that we again

  434. can frame

  435. this idea

  436. what Paul

  437. is saying

  438. when he says

  439. grace

  440. to all

  441. who love

  442. the Lord

  443. Jesus Christ.

  444. Does everybody

  445. in the world

  446. love Jesus?

  447. What's the answer?

  448. No.

  449. Are there those

  450. who actually hate

  451. the Lord Jesus?

  452. Yes.

  453. I want you

  454. to recognize

  455. that Paul

  456. has some

  457. pretty strident

  458. pretty militant

  459. things to say

  460. about this business

  461. of loving Christ.

  462. Turn back

  463. in your Bible

  464. if you will

  465. you're in Ephesians

  466. so turn back

  467. to 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 16:22

  468. chapter 16

  469. verse 22.

  470. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 16:22

  471. chapter 16

  472. verse 22.

  473. 2.

  474. If anyone

  475. has no love

  476. for the Lord

  477. can I read

  478. the rest of it

  479. and you'll

  480. track with me?

  481. Let him

  482. be

  483. accursed.

  484. If anyone

  485. has no love

  486. for the Lord

  487. let him

  488. be accursed

  489. our Lord

  490. comes.

  491. Now

  492. our sign

  493. out there

  494. says Marantha.

  495. It actually

  496. is Maranatha.

  497. Since my

  498. email

  499. has NBC

  500. Columbus

  501. on it

  502. and someone

  503. will say

  504. well what

  505. does M

  506. stand for?

  507. I always

  508. opt for the

  509. mother instead

  510. of the

  511. Maranatha

  512. to explain.

  513. It's like

  514. mother

  515. boy

  516. cat.

  517. I don't

  518. go Maranatha

  519. boy

  520. cat

  521. because

  522. it always

  523. kind of

  524. flummoxes

  525. them when

  526. you give

  527. them the

  528. Maranatha

  529. part.

  530. I appreciate

  531. the fact

  532. that our

  533. sign says

  534. Maranatha

  535. our Lord

  536. comes.

  537. I'm curious

  538. if anybody

  539. ever thought

  540. about saying

  541. if anybody

  542. doesn't love

  543. Jesus

  544. they're cursed.

  545. Put that

  546. on the

  547. sign too.

  548. I mean

  549. hey

  550. we're being

  551. pretty divisive

  552. to split the

  553. verse in

  554. half right?

  555. No well

  556. it's alright

  557. stop while

  558. I'm ahead.

  559. But

  560. hey

  561. loving Christ

  562. is pretty

  563. serious

  564. business.

  565. And Paul

  566. as he

  567. takes and

  568. summarizes

  569. the matter

  570. of salvation

  571. he says

  572. listen

  573. grace

  574. brings about

  575. a love

  576. for the

  577. Lord Jesus

  578. Christ.

  579. That's what

  580. salvation

  581. produces.

  582. How do I

  583. know

  584. that I am

  585. a child

  586. of God

  587. that I

  588. have genuine

  589. salvation

  590. that I

  591. am one

  592. of his

  593. and I

  594. will spend

  595. eternity

  596. in heaven?

  597. Is it

  598. because

  599. at one

  600. point or

  601. another

  602. I said

  603. Lord

  604. Lord

  605. and the

  606. answer

  607. is

  608. not

  609. necessarily.

  610. Is it

  611. because

  612. at one

  613. point

  614. I was

  615. baptized?

  616. Not

  617. necessarily

  618. and it

  619. will be

  620. our joy

  621. this morning

  622. to hear

  623. the testimony

  624. of a young

  625. lady

  626. and see

  627. her be

  628. obedient to

  629. the Lord

  630. in a matter

  631. of baptism.

  632. But is

  633. her salvation

  634. dependent upon

  635. her going

  636. through that

  637. motion?

  638. The answer

  639. is no.

  640. Salvation is

  641. the work

  642. of God

  643. and the work

  644. of God

  645. produces

  646. something that

  647. can be

  648. identified and

  649. we look now

  650. at this passage

  651. and recognize

  652. the character

  653. of saving

  654. and keeping

  655. grace.

  656. As we take

  657. up the last

  658. part of this

  659. text we see

  660. that Paul puts

  661. a great deal

  662. of weight on

  663. the idea

  664. of love.

  665. Not in an

  666. abstract sense

  667. but in a

  668. very real

  669. and practical

  670. way.

  671. Now you'll

  672. remember the

  673. great commandment

  674. in Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 6:5

  675. chapter 6

  676. verse 5

  677. it says

  678. Hear O Israel

  679. the Lord

  680. our God

  681. the Lord

  682. is one

  683. and you

  684. shall

  685. love him.

  686. I remember

  687. in an

  688. earlier

  689. day

  690. I was

  691. a teacher

  692. in a

  693. Christian

  694. school

  695. and our

  696. president

  697. of that

  698. Christian

  699. school

  700. a sweet

  701. man

  702. named

  703. Ralph

  704. Bainham

  705. would get

  706. up almost

  707. on a daily

  708. basis

  709. and his

  710. how many

  711. of you know

  712. that sometimes

  713. we fall

  714. into standard

  715. patterns of

  716. praying.

  717. Some people

  718. cannot start

  719. their prayer

  720. out with

  721. something like

  722. dear heavenly

  723. father

  724. it's like

  725. hitting the

  726. starter key

  727. you know

  728. can I pray

  729. without saying

  730. dear heavenly

  731. father

  732. Ralph could

  733. not pray

  734. without saying

  735. we love

  736. you today

  737. and I

  738. have to tell

  739. you as a

  740. young man

  741. sitting there

  742. I had to

  743. believe that

  744. it wasn't

  745. true of all

  746. of us

  747. because we

  748. is what

  749. we is more

  750. than I

  751. and I

  752. knew some

  753. of the other

  754. jerks that I

  755. was working

  756. with all

  757. their Christian

  758. I knew some

  759. of their

  760. hearts and

  761. and I knew

  762. some of the

  763. little disputes

  764. and little

  765. petty things

  766. going on in

  767. lots of our

  768. lives and I

  769. thought we

  770. love you today

  771. I wish

  772. Paul says

  773. this he says

  774. hey listen

  775. grace to

  776. all who

  777. love the

  778. Lord Jesus

  779. Christ

  780. and when we

  781. stop and think

  782. about it we

  783. recognize that

  784. this business of

  785. loving God is

  786. pretty serious

  787. Mark chapter

    Mark 12:28–31

  788. 12 verse

  789. 28 through

  790. 31 and I'm

  791. not going to

  792. go there but

  793. mark it for

  794. you in Mark

    Mark 12 chapter mention

  795. chapter 12 we

  796. have an attorney

  797. come to Jesus

  798. and said all

  799. right all

  800. right

  801. which is the

  802. big law

  803. which is the

  804. big one

  805. keep that

  806. one

  807. now understand

  808. that the

  809. Jews had

  810. developed this

  811. system

  812. where I

  813. think they

  814. had a total

  815. of 618

  816. laws

  817. I mean you

  818. have the

  819. Ten Commandments

  820. that are the

  821. biggies

  822. but under the

  823. Ten Commandments

  824. there were

  825. there were

  826. kind of

  827. categories

  828. there's

  829. sub

  830. categories

  831. and really

  832. if you're

  833. into

  834. keeping the

  835. law

  836. I mean it's

  837. not like you

  838. get to do

  839. some and not

  840. the others

  841. we're all

  842. about that

  843. but really

  844. keeping all

  845. of it

  846. and everybody

  847. reckoned

  848. oh let's

  849. go for the

  850. biggies

  851. the ones

  852. that are

  853. important

  854. so they

  855. came to

  856. Jesus

  857. and said

  858. all right

  859. which is

  860. the biggie

  861. and you

  862. know what he

  863. said

  864. he didn't

  865. say keep

  866. the Sabbath

  867. he didn't

  868. say tithe

  869. he didn't

  870. say show

  871. up at

  872. services

  873. he says

  874. love

  875. God

  876. love

  877. God

  878. I want

  879. you to

  880. understand

  881. that the

  882. grace that

  883. saves is

  884. also the

  885. grace that

  886. changes

  887. and the

  888. power of

  889. God that

  890. changes the

  891. sinner from

  892. being a

  893. crass lover

  894. of self

  895. into a

  896. lover of

  897. Christ

  898. is the

  899. salvation

  900. that we

  901. mark and

  902. recognize

  903. as genuine

  904. so let me

  905. stop you here

  906. just for a

  907. second and

  908. ask you to

  909. look at that

  910. little phrase

  911. who love

  912. the Lord

  913. Jesus Christ

  914. I wonder if

  915. as you think

  916. about your

  917. salvation you

  918. would say

  919. the real

  920. marker

  921. the thing

  922. that sets

  923. me apart

  924. from the

  925. rest of the

  926. world is

  927. that I do

  928. sincerely love

  929. Jesus Christ

  930. that's what

  931. Paul's saying

  932. he's saying

  933. a real

  934. believer

  935. one who has

  936. received the

  937. fullness of

  938. God's grace

  939. can be

  940. ultimately

  941. characterized

  942. by the

  943. fact that

  944. they love

  945. Christ

  946. I want

  947. you to

  948. understand

  949. that

  950. loving him

  951. is not a

  952. simple

  953. discipline of

  954. the intellect

  955. do you

  956. understand that

  957. how many of

  958. you have

  959. decided to

  960. love people

  961. more

  962. just kind

  963. of arbitrary

  964. you realize

  965. you're a little

  966. on the south

  967. side of this

  968. thing and so

  969. all right

  970. let's try a

  971. little bit of

  972. better love

  973. for other

  974. people

  975. what happens

  976. the minute

  977. you make that

  978. conscious deliberate

  979. decision

  980. at least for me

  981. here's how it

  982. plays out

  983. I make that

  984. decision and

  985. the Holy Spirit

  986. says hey

  987. let me test

  988. you

  989. and I'll be

  990. sitting in the

  991. family room

  992. thinking you know

  993. you know I

  994. want to work at

  995. love but I'd

  996. rather work at

  997. people that are

  998. in Africa or

  999. India and my

  1000. wife is sitting

  1001. there as I'm

  1002. kind of relaxing

  1003. she says would

  1004. you get me a

  1005. drink of water

  1006. you got to be

  1007. kidding me

  1008. are your legs

  1009. broken

  1010. hey love

  1011. right right

  1012. how many of you

  1013. understand that

  1014. the test plays

  1015. out in real

  1016. time right

  1017. where you are

  1018. I want you to

  1019. look at

  1020. 1st John

    John 4:19

  1021. chapter 4

  1022. verse 19

  1023. as you think

  1024. about this

  1025. matter of

  1026. love

  1027. 1st John

    John 4:19

  1028. chapter 4

  1029. verse 19

  1030. we love him

  1031. because what

  1032. because he

  1033. first loved us

  1034. here's the

  1035. truth

  1036. the grace

  1037. of God

  1038. that has

  1039. appeared

  1040. bringing salvation

  1041. to all people

  1042. takes those

  1043. who by nature

  1044. prior to their

  1045. conversion

  1046. were self

  1047. focused

  1048. naval

  1049. gazers

  1050. and turns

  1051. them into

  1052. people who

  1053. from their

  1054. heart

  1055. love the

  1056. Lord Jesus

  1057. Christ

  1058. he loved

  1059. us enough

  1060. that he

  1061. pursued us

  1062. in our

  1063. selfish

  1064. arrogant

  1065. stubborn

  1066. belittling

  1067. character

  1068. and he

  1069. found us

  1070. where we

  1071. are

  1072. he wrapped

  1073. his arms

  1074. around us

  1075. and he

  1076. saved us

  1077. by his

  1078. kindness

  1079. and his

  1080. grace

  1081. paid the

  1082. price

  1083. for our

  1084. sins

  1085. upon the

  1086. cross

  1087. and has

  1088. granted us

  1089. everlasting

  1090. life

  1091. and Paul

  1092. says

  1093. hey listen

  1094. grace

  1095. to all

  1096. who love

  1097. the Lord

  1098. Jesus

  1099. Christ

  1100. I want

  1101. you to

  1102. recognize

  1103. that

  1104. that being

  1105. a person

  1106. who loves

  1107. the Lord

  1108. Jesus

  1109. Christ

  1110. has very

  1111. real

  1112. effect

  1113. on the

  1114. way in

  1115. which we

  1116. relate to

  1117. other

  1118. people

  1119. isn't

  1120. that right

  1121. let's go

  1122. back just

  1123. for a

  1124. little bit

  1125. to Ephesians

    Ephesians 6:21

  1126. chapter 6

  1127. verse 21

  1128. very

  1129. interesting

  1130. the way

  1131. Paul closes

  1132. off this

  1133. this very

  1134. very theological

  1135. book

  1136. Ephesians

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  1137. chapter 1

  1138. through 3

  1139. is perhaps

  1140. one of the

  1141. most theological

  1142. expositions

  1143. of the

  1144. the nature

  1145. or the work

  1146. of God

  1147. in salvation

  1148. it's deep

  1149. and heavy

  1150. the last

  1151. three chapters

  1152. are about

  1153. how

  1154. God

  1155. having worked

  1156. our salvation

  1157. works to

  1158. amend

  1159. and transform

  1160. our behavior

  1161. the closing

  1162. statements

  1163. he makes

  1164. in Ephesians

  1165. are about

  1166. the matter

  1167. of love

  1168. so that

  1169. you also

  1170. may know

  1171. how I am

  1172. and what

  1173. I am doing

  1174. Tychicus

  1175. the beloved

  1176. brother

  1177. and faithful

  1178. minister

  1179. of the

  1180. Lord

  1181. will tell

  1182. you

  1183. everything

  1184. I've sent

  1185. him to

  1186. you for

  1187. this purpose

  1188. that you

  1189. may know

  1190. how we

  1191. are

  1192. and that

  1193. he may

  1194. encourage

  1195. your hearts

  1196. Paul's saying

  1197. hey

  1198. I just

  1199. as I've

  1200. stopped

  1201. this letter

  1202. I want

  1203. you to

  1204. know

  1205. I love

  1206. you

  1207. and then

  1208. verse

  1209. 22

  1210. or 23

  1211. peace

  1212. be to

  1213. the brothers

  1214. and love

  1215. with faith

  1216. characteristic

  1217. of genuine

  1218. Christian

  1219. fellowship

  1220. as a love

  1221. for one

  1222. another

  1223. that transcends

  1224. what the

  1225. unbelieving

  1226. world

  1227. understands

  1228. the unbelieving

  1229. world is very

  1230. limited in their

  1231. comprehension of

  1232. love and it is

  1233. largely self-serving

  1234. I had the

  1235. wonderful opportunity

  1236. this last week

  1237. of talking with

  1238. an individual

  1239. who called in

  1240. way in advance

  1241. normally most of

  1242. my premarital

  1243. wedding calls

  1244. are March

  1245. April May

  1246. this person

  1247. called and said

  1248. I'd like to

  1249. talk to you

  1250. about a wedding

  1251. in 15

  1252. I thought

  1253. we're way

  1254. ahead

  1255. and as I

  1256. began to talk

  1257. it became quite

  1258. evident that this

  1259. person also needed

  1260. to hear the sweet

  1261. truth of the Lord

  1262. Jesus Christ

  1263. and the gospel

  1264. and I explained

  1265. to that person

  1266. there's a fundamental

  1267. difference

  1268. now both a

  1269. civil marriage

  1270. and a church

  1271. wedding

  1272. can accomplish

  1273. in some senses

  1274. something

  1275. somewhat similar

  1276. they're both

  1277. binding

  1278. in the court

  1279. I said

  1280. the difference

  1281. is that a

  1282. civil wedding

  1283. is a contract

  1284. where both

  1285. parties whether

  1286. stated or

  1287. otherwise

  1288. are kind of

  1289. agreeing that

  1290. well I'll do

  1291. this if you'll

  1292. do that

  1293. I'm amazed

  1294. at how many

  1295. times I bump

  1296. into people

  1297. who think

  1298. that marriage

  1299. and love

  1300. is all about

  1301. kind of a

  1302. 50-50 bargain

  1303. that's not

  1304. the Bible's

  1305. view

  1306. the Bible

  1307. sees marriage

  1308. as a one

  1309. way covenant

  1310. I'm going

  1311. to do

  1312. this

  1313. for better

  1314. or for worse

  1315. sickness

  1316. and in

  1317. health

  1318. richer

  1319. for poorer

  1320. and then

  1321. there's that

  1322. little statement

  1323. at the end

  1324. how's it go

  1325. till

  1326. death

  1327. do

  1328. us

  1329. part

  1330. after I

  1331. came back

  1332. from

  1333. Caleb and

  1334. Charity's

  1335. ceremony

  1336. on Friday

  1337. night

  1338. I happened

  1339. to stop

  1340. by and

  1341. went into

  1342. the nursing

  1343. home to

  1344. see dad

  1345. and mom

  1346. and found

  1347. that they

  1348. were sleeping

  1349. I didn't

  1350. awaken them

  1351. but I

  1352. noticed that

  1353. my brother

  1354. had pushed

  1355. my dad

  1356. over next

  1357. to my

  1358. mom's

  1359. bed

  1360. that's

  1361. covenant

  1362. work

  1363. that's

  1364. not a

  1365. contract

  1366. and that

  1367. kind of

  1368. love

  1369. is what

  1370. Jesus

  1371. does

  1372. in the

  1373. life of

  1374. a person

  1375. who's

  1376. transformed

  1377. by grace

  1378. do you

  1379. understand

  1380. that

  1381. Ephesians

  1382. makes it

  1383. clear

  1384. that when

  1385. the work

  1386. of God

  1387. is at

  1388. play

  1389. in our

  1390. life

  1391. it makes

  1392. a difference

  1393. in the

  1394. relationships

  1395. we have

  1396. and so

  1397. as you

  1398. look at

  1399. this

  1400. passage

  1401. I want

  1402. you to

  1403. understand

  1404. that

  1405. the

  1406. apostle

  1407. is kind

  1408. of

  1409. bringing

  1410. things

  1411. to a

  1412. close

  1413. and he

  1414. says

  1415. listen

  1416. he wants

  1417. us to

  1418. understand

  1419. grace

  1420. this

  1421. undeserved

  1422. richness

  1423. the work

  1424. of God

  1425. in saving

  1426. you

  1427. produces

  1428. a love

  1429. for

  1430. Christ

  1431. how do I

  1432. know I'm

  1433. saved

  1434. I have

  1435. a love

  1436. for Christ

  1437. that I

  1438. didn't

  1439. create

  1440. he did

  1441. so do

  1442. you really

  1443. love him

  1444. do you

  1445. really love

  1446. him

  1447. mark the

  1448. last little

  1449. part

  1450. actually

  1451. very

  1452. interesting

  1453. statement

  1454. it says

  1455. with love

  1456. incorruptible

  1457. I actually

  1458. as I was

  1459. thinking about

  1460. this

  1461. last week

  1462. I kind

  1463. of thought

  1464. about

  1465. being a

  1466. juvenile

  1467. I love

  1468. lots of

  1469. people

  1470. girls

  1471. so we

  1472. get this

  1473. clear

  1474. you know

  1475. I remember

  1476. in fourth

  1477. grade

  1478. losing my

  1479. way for

  1480. the first

  1481. time in

  1482. memory

  1483. because I

  1484. walked home

  1485. following

  1486. Wanda

  1487. Cooper

  1488. I remember

  1489. her name

  1490. how I

  1491. got home

  1492. I have

  1493. no idea

  1494. but Wanda

  1495. I found

  1496. out later

  1497. she was

  1498. a Presbyterian

  1499. and that

  1500. wouldn't work

  1501. for a

  1502. Baptist

  1503. so I

  1504. stopped

  1505. my

  1506. interest

  1507. but

  1508. Wanda

  1509. swept me

  1510. off my

  1511. feet

  1512. fourth

  1513. grade

  1514. and

  1515. it was

  1516. the first

  1517. time I

  1518. was lost

  1519. I do

  1520. want you

  1521. to know

  1522. that

  1523. ever since

  1524. then

  1525. it's

  1526. been

  1527. downhill

  1528. you know

  1529. I remember

  1530. actually

  1531. this is

  1532. the truth

  1533. sitting in

  1534. a field

  1535. on a

  1536. hillside

  1537. with

  1538. daisies

  1539. around me

  1540. and I

  1541. thought

  1542. I was

  1543. trying to

  1544. figure out

  1545. if Claire

  1546. Blickenstaff

  1547. loved me

  1548. at that

  1549. point

  1550. so I

  1551. went to

  1552. the flower

  1553. routine

  1554. how many

  1555. of you

  1556. understand

  1557. the flower

  1558. routine

  1559. okay

  1560. it's

  1561. embarrassing

  1562. but you

  1563. know

  1564. there I

  1565. was

  1566. she

  1567. loves

  1568. me

  1569. she

  1570. loves

  1571. me

  1572. not

  1573. but you

  1574. know

  1575. I

  1576. figured

  1577. out

  1578. that

  1579. you

  1580. know

  1581. being

  1582. that's

  1583. a

  1584. binary

  1585. formula

  1586. I

  1587. could

  1588. figure

  1589. out

  1590. that

  1591. she

  1592. always

  1593. loved

  1594. me

  1595. do you

  1596. know

  1597. how

  1598. I

  1599. did it

  1600. it

  1601. was

  1602. either

  1603. 2 4 6 8

  1604. whatever the

  1605. pick and

  1606. it worked

  1607. out but

  1608. she actually

  1609. didn't so

  1610. flowers didn't

  1611. play out

  1612. there were

  1613. lots of

  1614. reasons not

  1615. to love

  1616. me

  1617. our love

  1618. is a

  1619. relatively

  1620. fickle

  1621. thing

  1622. isn't it

  1623. I can't

  1624. tell you

  1625. how many

  1626. times I've

  1627. had couples

  1628. in my

  1629. office and

  1630. I'll have

  1631. the husband

  1632. or the

  1633. wife say

  1634. well I

  1635. don't

  1636. love her

  1637. anymore

  1638. and I'm

  1639. happy to

  1640. say that's

  1641. not a

  1642. problem

  1643. to

  1644. Jesus

  1645. do you

  1646. follow

  1647. that

  1648. I'm

  1649. not

  1650. concerned

  1651. if you

  1652. don't

  1653. love

  1654. her

  1655. because

  1656. that's

  1657. your

  1658. problem

  1659. that's

  1660. not

  1661. hers

  1662. and

  1663. I

  1664. can

  1665. tell

  1666. you

  1667. that

  1668. Jesus

  1669. can

  1670. fix

  1671. the

  1672. attitude

  1673. you

  1674. have

  1675. love

  1676. that is

  1677. incorruptible

  1678. is love

  1679. that comes

  1680. from

  1681. God

  1682. and is

  1683. sustained

  1684. by

  1685. God

  1686. and that's

  1687. love

  1688. that is

  1689. his

  1690. and never

  1691. changes

  1692. it's a very

  1693. interesting way to end

  1694. this book

  1695. do you follow that

1696. do you know how the book

  1697. begins

  1698. chapter 1 through 3

  1699. is fairly robust

  1700. in its argument

  1701. for the

  1702. unconditional

  1703. affection

  1704. for God

  1705. of God

  1706. for individuals

  1707. that he saves

  1708. and he ends

  1709. off

  1710. kind of

  1711. challenging us

  1712. to think

  1713. pretty seriously

  1714. about whether

  1715. we have it

  1716. or not

  1717. that's

  1718. interesting

  1719. isn't it

  1720. do you really

  1721. love him

  1722. unconditionally

  1723. or is

  1724. your love

  1725. something

  1726. that

  1727. well look

  1728. at it

  1729. grace be

  1730. with all

  1731. who love

  1732. our Lord

  1733. Jesus Christ

  1734. with love

  1735. incorruptible

  1736. What's

  1737. your love

  1738. like?

  1739. Can you

  1740. track the

  1741. fact that

  1742. it has

  1743. grown over

  1744. the years?

  1745. Can

  1746. you?

  1747. Can you?

  1748. in Revelation

    Revelation 3 chapter mention

  1749. chapter 3

  1750. you remember

  1751. that the

  1752. spirit of

  1753. God

  1754. actually

  1755. Christ

  1756. comes

  1757. to the

  1758. church

  1759. there

  1760. at

  1761. Laodicea

  1762. not Laodicea

  1763. church at

  1764. Ephesus

  1765. I think

  1766. it is

  1767. and he

  1768. says

  1769. you have

  1770. lost

  1771. your

  1772. first

  1773. what?

  1774. Love

  1775. What's

  1776. your love

  1777. for Christ

  1778. like this

  1779. morning?

  1780. If you

  1781. are his

  1782. child

  1783. he is

  1784. at work

  1785. and has

  1786. been at

  1787. work

  1788. and will

  1789. continue

  1790. working

  1791. to cause

  1792. you to

  1793. grow

  1794. in your

  1795. love

  1796. for him

  1797. do you

  1798. realize

  1799. that?

  1800. That's

  1801. what he's

  1802. going to

  1803. do

  1804. now listen

  1805. to be

  1806. carefully

  1807. so you

  1808. don't

  1809. miss

  1810. this

  1811. it's

  1812. a whole

  1813. lot

  1814. better

  1815. to come

  1816. along

  1817. willingly

  1818. saying

  1819. I

  1820. want to

  1821. work

  1822. at that

  1823. I

  1824. need

  1825. help

  1826. at

  1827. that

  1828. I

  1829. really

  1830. want

  1831. to

  1832. take

  1833. this

  1834. seriously

  1835. let me

  1836. continue

  1837. to

  1838. grow

  1839. in

  1840. love

  1841. because

  1842. if

  1843. you're

  1844. his

  1845. child

  1846. and

  1847. you

  1848. decide

  1849. I

  1850. don't

  1851. care

  1852. right

  1853. now

  1854. now guess

  1855. what he

  1856. does

  1857. to the

  1858. I

  1859. don't

  1860. care

  1861. right

  1862. now

  1863. crowd

  1864. everybody

  1865. here

  1866. who

  1867. has

  1868. any

  1869. miles

  1870. on

  1871. their

  1872. tires

  1873. knows

  1874. that

  1875. the

  1876. I

  1877. don't

  1878. care

  1879. right

  1880. now

  1881. can

  1882. cause

  1883. him

  1884. to

  1885. do

  1886. what

  1887. we

  1888. sing

  1889. that

  1890. song

  1891. oh

  1892. love

  1893. that

  1894. will

  1895. not

  1896. let

  1897. me

  1898. go

  1899. when

  1900. does

  1901. it

  1902. become

  1903. evident

  1904. that

  1905. he

  1906. will

  1907. not

  1908. let

  1909. you

  1910. go

  1911. it's

  1912. when

  1913. you

  1914. try

  1915. to

  1916. walk

  1917. off

  1918. and

  1919. do

  1920. your

  1921. own

  1922. thing

  1923. for

  1924. a

  1925. little

  1926. the

  1927. apostle

  1928. says

  1929. I

  1930. want

  1931. you

  1932. to

  1933. understand

  1934. grace

  1935. to

  1936. all

  1937. who

  1938. love

  1939. our

  1940. Lord

  1941. Jesus

  1942. Christ

  1943. with

  1944. love

  1945. incorruptible

  1946. !

  1947. Is

  1948. that

  1949. you?

  1950. Is

  1951. that

  1952. you?

  1953. That's

  1954. a fair

  1955. question

  1956. let's

  1957. close

  1958. in

  1959. prayer

  1960. Father

  1961. God

  1962. without

  1963. question

  1964. this

  1965. morning

  1966. as we

  1967. take

  1968. this

  1969. word

  1970. and

  1971. handle

  1972. it

  1973. by

  1974. your

  1975. grace

  1976. and

  1977. power

  1978. we're

  1979. overwhelmed

  1980. to stop

  1981. and realize

  1982. that while

  1983. we were yet

  1984. sinners

  1985. Christ

  1986. died

  1987. for us

  1988. and

  1989. he

  1990. and his

  1991. love

  1992. pursued

  1993. us

  1994. while

  1995. we

  1996. were

  1997. unloving

  1998. and

  1999. unlovable

  2000. while

  2001. we

  2002. were

  2003. yet

  2004. burdensome

  2005. and

  2006. dark

  2007. and

  2008. by

  2009. your

  2010. grace

  2011. you

  2012. have

  2013. taken

  2014. hearts

  2015. that

  2016. were

  2017. stony

  2018. cold

  2019. and

  2020. dead

  2021. and

  2022. you've

  2023. made

  2024. us

  2025. to be

  2026. lovers

  2027. of the

  2028. living

  2029. God

  2030. and we

  2031. need to

  2032. confess

  2033. that sometimes

  2034. our love

  2035. gets cold

  2036. and

  2037. self-consuming

  2038. and we

  2039. are so

  2040. very

  2041. thankful

  2042. that you

  2043. will not

  2044. let us

  2045. go

  2046. and you

  2047. continue

  2048. helping us

  2049. grow

  2050. we want

  2051. to be

  2052. quick

  2053. to

  2054. confess

  2055. the frailty

  2056. of our

  2057. affections

  2058. and ask

  2059. your spirit

  2060. to work

  2061. to stir

  2062. our hearts

  2063. up anew

  2064. to

  2065. remember

  2066. that it's
