  1. First, let me ask that you turn in your Bible to John chapter 1, and then I want you to join me in prayer.

    John 1 chapter mention

  2. !

  3. There is not a habit, a ritual, something that is scribed out as a preface, but it is the glad confession of your supremacy and your sufficiency,

  4. and our absolute dependence upon you to work in making the word that you have given to us that is settled in the heavens clear and understandable and appreciated in the lives of your children.

  5. So the declaration of the word is of the Lord, and the application and appreciation of the word is of the Lord, and we are dependent upon you today.

  6. And we ask that you would be pleased to bless us with the work of the Holy Spirit, both in the preaching and the application of the word to our lives.

  7. We ask this in Jesus' name.

  8. Amen.

  9. Thank you, Aaron.

  10. Now.

  11. I called on Aaron earlier in the week.

  12. I said, Aaron, would you mind doing a favor for me?

  13. I think it has a place.

  14. And he said, well, I've never played that before.

  15. I said, you can handle it.

  16. And I do appreciate Aaron doing that.

  17. And there's a reason for it.

  18. You know, when we hear those notes, what do we think?

  19. We think that they are an introduction to the President of the United States coming out

  20. because that is pretty much the fanfare that is played at any time when he is making a public appearance.

  21. And it's kind of a signal that he is going to be out immediately.

  22. We use similar signals that I don't know that they're always accepted,

  23. but we do things like blinking the lights in the lobby.

  24. You know why we do that?

  25. Come on down.

  26. You know, come in.

  27. Okay.

  28. Another thing we do, and I have been tempted to pipe music out into the lobby before we get started

  29. because you're kind of cued that you're not going in until some music is happening

  30. and then kind of drift in as you feel inclined.

  31. And I thought, we'll play the music early and surprise you one time.

  32. But here's what I know.

  33. I'd only get away with it once.

  34. And then what you would do is just kind of wait it out.

  35. And so those kind of preparatory signals would not make much sense.

  36. But the reason I had Aaron play this little line is I want you to understand clearly

  37. that Jesus did not come into his public ministry unannounced and missed.

  38. Now it's true, and we make much of it, and I think rightfully so,

  39. that his birth was with relative anonymity.

  40. He arrived in a little old town, and he ended up actually in a manger.

  41. But I want you to understand that while his birth was that way,

  42. his public ministry was not something that was characterized by stealth or secret.

  43. And as we look at John 1, verse 6, and carry down to verse 13,

    John 1:6

  44. what I want you to understand.

  45. Aaron, you can go sit with your honey.

  46. She thinks you should be up there.

  47. Hi, Megan.

  48. I mean, you know, you're married, right?

  49. Is he turning color just a little bit?

  50. Okay.

  51. Okay.

  52. As we look at John 1, we look at verse 6 through 13.

  53. I want you to understand that the God of this universe is not into secrets and surprises

  54. and catching us unaware.

  55. Everything he does, his justice, is something that is communicated clearly so that men are without excuse.

  56. When ultimately they reject the sweetness of the gospel, they will never be able to say,

  57. I didn't know.

  58. I didn't hear.

  59. And so this morning, as we look at this passage, we want to understand that Christ's coming was prophesied in the Old Testament.

  60. It was announced by John the Baptist.

  61. And yet, as we will see, John's ministry and the coming of the light, the Lord Jesus Christ, was largely rejected.

  62. Does that mean that the darkness wins?

  63. No.

  64. Because as we are going to see later on towards the end of our lesson this morning,

  65. what it says there in verse 12 and 13 is,

  66. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become the children of God.

  67. I'm excited to be able to tell you that the darkness doesn't win, and that is a reminder of that reality.

  68. Well, let's dive into the text and mark, first of all, John's great work.

  69. We find it there in verses 6 through 8, and it says,

  70. There was a man sent from God whose name was John.

  71. Now, the Bible makes it rather clear, if you read through any of the synoptic gospels,

  72. that John was a rather unusual man.

  73. For one, his dress and his diet was something that set him apart from the crowd.

  74. But we find the thing that was most significant about him was not his dress and his diet,

  75. but it really was the ministry that he had.

  76. The scripture makes it very clear that he was Christ's forerunner,

  77. or he was Christ's introducer or front man,

  78. the one who came in front to make it very clear that someone important was coming.

  79. I want you to understand that John's ministry was not something that he took upon himself simply as a career choice,

  80. because it tells us there in verse 6,

  81. there was a man sent.

  82. The office and role that John engaged in was something that he received by divine appointment.

  83. And I want you to understand that John was called by God to go before the Messiah

  84. and to announce Christ's coming.

  85. Just like if we heard that hail to the chief,

  86. and we were in Washington, D.C., kind of sitting in a press club there,

  87. waiting for the president to come out,

  88. we would know that says, all right, all right, here he is.

  89. John served in that capacity.

  90. I want you to understand that in doing what John did,

  91. he was fulfilling Old Testament prophecy.

  92. And I want you to look at a couple different passages to fix that in your mind.

  93. Go back, if you would, to Matthew chapter 3,

    Matthew 3 chapter mention

  94. and then also in Luke chapter 3,

    Luke 3 chapter mention

  95. and basically both of the passages are fairly similar.

  96. But I draw attention to them so that you can see that this issue of John's ministry

  97. was something that the Spirit of God considered to be very important

  98. and wants us not to miss it.

  99. John chapter 3, verse 1 through 3.

    John 3:1–3

  100. In those days, John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea.

  101. Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

  102. For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah,

  103. when he said,

  104. The voice of one crying in the wilderness,

  105. Prepare the way of the Lord.

  106. Make his path straight.

  107. And then over in Luke,

  108. we find a very similar statement made by Luke.

  109. Luke chapter 3, verse 2 through 5.

    Luke 3:2–5

  110. During the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas,

  111. the word of God came to John,

  112. the son of Zechariah, in the wilderness.

  113. And he went into all the region around the Jordan,

  114. proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sin.

  115. As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet,

  116. the voice of one crying in the wilderness,

  117. Prepare the way of the Lord.

  118. Make his path straight.

  119. Every valley shall be filled,

  120. and every mountain and hill shall be made low.

  121. The crooked shall become straight,

  122. and the rough places shall become level ways,

  123. and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.

  124. I want you to understand,

  125. if you were to read through the Gospels

  126. and get an idea of John's ministry,

  127. what you would recognize is this,

  128. is that John came and made it undeniably clear

  129. that he was not the Lord Jesus, the Messiah,

  130. but he was the forerunner.

  131. He was coming in advance and making the ministry of Jesus that was coming to be clear.

  132. He called people to repentance,

  133. and in calling people to repentance,

  134. he made it quite clear that what they had been involved in,

  135. in their behavior and practice,

  136. and the religious culture that they were living,

  137. it was not adequate.

  138. The superficiality of their performance in their religious Jewish issues was not sufficient,

  139. and it was a call,

  140. it's time to repent and make things right in your heart.

  141. I want you to thank me just for a moment about the message that John preached.

  142. We find that John made it very, very clear that the Messiah's coming

  143. was one that required things to be changed in the environment in which he was speaking.

  144. Now, I want you to understand that when he makes this statement,

  145. and look in your mind, just go back to the passage in Luke,

  146. I'm going to reference it.

  147. It says,

  148. Make his path straight.

  149. Every valley shall be filled,

  150. and every mountain and hill shall be made low,

  151. and the crooked become straight.

  152. It is talking about an ancient practice that characterized

  153. when a king would come to visit some little berg.

  154. What would happen is that the king,

  155. anticipating showing up at Columbus, so to speak,

  156. would send out his advance man,

  157. and his advance man would come into the community and say,

  158. By the way, King so-and-so is going to arrive on August the 29th,

  159. and he is going to come from Port Columbus,

  160. and he's going to come down such and such a path,

  161. and we want you to be ready when he comes.

  162. I think about, over the years,

  163. the number of times that, while I've been here,

  164. we've had a president or one of the presidential hopefuls

  165. show up here in Columbus,

  166. and guess what happens when a president

  167. or someone who is campaigning to become president

  168. shows up in Columbus?

  169. Guess what happens?

  170. How many of you have been caught in the traffic before?

  171. You know, you decide you're going from point A to point B,

  172. and you find out that there are all these police officers

  173. that are being paid double time or whatever else it is,

  174. and they are blocking off the traffic,

  175. and you want to go this way, and guess what?

  176. No, you're going this way.

  177. Well, in the old days,

  178. in order to have things ready for the king,

  179. what they had to do was take care of potholes.

  180. They had to kind of straighten out the road,

  181. you know, get everything right.

  182. The king was going to go from point A to point B,

  183. and it was going to be a smooth path.

  184. It was going to have no bumps in it.

  185. Everything was going to be just zip,

  186. and so the village would all kind of come out

  187. and fill in the potholes

  188. and make everything just perfect.

  189. By the way, if they didn't, guess what happened?

  190. The king would be bumping along, you see.

  191. And pretty soon, heads would roll.

  192. That was the ancient world.

  193. And so Isaiah says,

  194. I want you to know that there will be a messenger

  195. that is going to come in front of the Messiah,

  196. and the Messiah is going to expect that things be in order.

  197. I want you to understand that John 1.8

  198. makes it very clear that John's coming

  199. and John's life was all wrapped up in his ministry.

  200. It says there in verse 7,

  201. He came as a witness to bear witness about the light

  202. that all might believe through him.

  203. John's focus was in no way upon himself.

  204. Every time John had an opportunity,

  205. he made it clear that the hero of the story

  206. was the Lord Jesus Christ who was coming.

  207. He was the one who would be the Savior of the world,

  208. and John's ministry was always pointing attention

  209. to the coming Messiah.

  210. In verse 8, it says,

  211. He was not the light,

  212. but came to bear witness about the light.

  213. One of the undeniable truths about a faithful witness

  214. is that the witness is not the hero of the story,

  215. and John never allowed anybody

  216. to attach any of the significance or glory

  217. to what he was doing to himself.

  218. Now, it's interesting to stop and think about this,

  219. that John's ministry was atypical

  220. from many of the prophets

  221. that were used in a very dramatic and significant way.

  222. I think about two in particular.

  223. One would be Elijah,

  224. and the other would be Moses.

  225. In both cases,

  226. along with their public ministry,

  227. there were also some pretty dramatic what?

  228. Miracles.

  229. John was significant

  230. only in his messianic preaching

  231. and his call for repentance,

  232. and it was so powerful

  233. through the power of the Spirit of God

  234. that he brought profound conviction.

  235. Remember?

  236. People coming out to be baptized,

  237. people one after,

  238. just droves of them coming out,

  239. and so some of the religious leaders in Jerusalem

  240. sent people down to say,

  241. All right, John,

  242. are you that prophet?

  243. Are you the one who is the forerunner?

  244. Are you coming to...

  245. He says,

  246. Hey, listen,

  247. no, I'm not that prophet.

  248. Talking about what Moses had predicted

  249. about the coming of the Messiah.

  250. He says,

  251. I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness,

  252. Make straight the way of the Lord.

  253. All of John's life,

  254. all that he was engaged in,

  255. was wrapped up in pointing to Christ.

  256. And I just wonder,

  257. stop just for a minute

  258. and think about your own life.

  259. So how significant is the issue

  260. of you making clear

  261. the ministry and significance of Christ

  262. for your heart and life?

  263. How central is it?

  264. I want you to stop and think for a moment.

  265. Go, if you would,

  266. to 2 Corinthians.

  267. Let's cut over there for a second

  268. and just mark what Paul has to say

  269. about the ministry of believers.

  270. He says that we are ambassadors for Christ.

  271. There in verse 20,

  272. 2 Corinthians chapter 5, verse 20,

    2 Corinthians 5:20

  273. it says,

  274. Therefore we are ambassadors for Christ.

  275. God making his appeal through us,

  276. we implore you.

  277. Now listen to me.

  278. What does it mean to implore?

  279. What does it mean to implore?

  280. It means to beg with an earnestness

  281. because in practical terms,

  282. we implore when we know

  283. what the outcome is going to be

  284. if individuals refuse the gospel.

  285. someone shared with me earlier today

  286. the blessing that an individual

  287. who has been prayed for

  288. for many, many, many years

  289. came to know Christ this Thursday.

  290. Came to know the Lord Jesus Christ

  291. against the backdrop of cancer

  292. and an understanding of their life

  293. being very frail and very tentative.

  294. And in that space,

  295. God's spirit brought conviction.

  296. And I guarantee you,

  297. over the years,

  298. those who have loved this individual

  299. have pled and pled and pled

  300. and God graciously saved him.

  301. So here it says that

  302. we implore you in Christ's stead,

  303. be reconciled to God.

  304. So as you think about the ministry

  305. that John the Baptist had

  306. and go back there, if you will,

  307. to John chapter 1,

    John 1 chapter mention

  308. you mark that John came.

  309. What did he do?

  310. He says, hey, listen,

  311. I am here to let you know

  312. that the Messiah is coming

  313. and when he comes,

  314. he is to be listened to

  315. and attended to.

  316. Well, you would think

  317. that when you had

  318. hail to the chief being played,

  319. that people would at least act

  320. like they expect the president

  321. to come in

  322. and show due deference and respect.

  323. When you look there in verse 9,

  324. it says the true light,

  325. which enlightens everyone,

  326. was coming into the world.

  327. He was in the world

  328. and the world was made through him,

  329. yet the world did not know him.

  330. He came to his own

  331. and his own people

  332. did not receive him.

  333. And so the second thing we see

  334. is first of all,

  335. John's ministry of making Jesus clear

  336. and his coming evident.

  337. But secondly,

  338. we want to understand

  339. that the light of Christ was rejected.

  340. You can't say that John

  341. didn't make the coming

  342. of Christ clear.

  343. His ministry, public,

  344. every aspect of what he was engaged in

  345. was driving towards the point.

  346. The Lord Jesus,

  347. the Messiah is coming.

  348. And when Jesus showed up

  349. on the scene,

  350. remember what John the Baptist said?

  351. We're going to look at it later.

  352. It says,

  353. Behold the Lamb of God

  354. that comes to what?

  355. Take away the sins of the world.

  356. That's the one.

  357. And I want you to understand

  358. that John the Baptist

  359. did his job faithfully.

  360. And in the face

  361. of doing his job faithfully,

  362. we can be certain

  363. that no one in that day

  364. would ever have been able to say,

  365. I didn't know

  366. that that was the Messiah

  367. and that his coming

  368. was of any significance to me.

  369. You can imagine,

  370. given the unbearable burden of sin

  371. and the darkness of the world

  372. that was in that day

  373. and we see it in our day as well,

  374. you would just stop to think

  375. that just the streaming indication of light

  376. would draw people to it.

  377. It says there,

  378. He was not the light

  379. but came to bear witness about the light.

  380. There is a light

  381. and the light is valuable

  382. and you are to be drawn to it

  383. and yet,

  384. when the light came into the world,

  385. the light was not received by the world.

  386. The light showed up

  387. and yet it was intentionally rejected by all.

  388. So I want you to stop and recognize

  389. that what the Bible is telling us

  390. to this point is that

  391. some 2,000 years ago,

  392. the Lord Jesus Christ

  393. burst into the blackness

  394. of a sin-torn world

  395. and He brought hope and salvation for all.

  396. That's what He did.

  397. And when John wrote,

  398. He gives light to everyone,

  399. what He was making clear

  400. is that the Lord Jesus came

  401. to allow the gospel ministry

  402. and the impact of salvation through Him

  403. to be available to all people.

  404. Now I want you to recognize

  405. that the hope of salvation

  406. in the thinking of Jews

  407. was limited to guess who?

  408. Jews.

  409. And their idea was that,

  410. well, okay,

  411. if you want salvation,

  412. guess what you have to do?

  413. You have to become a Jew.

  414. The hope of salvation

  415. through the finished work of Christ

  416. was not something that was limited

  417. to the circumcised Jew

  418. that wore robes

  419. and bells on their robe or whatever.

  420. The promise of salvation

  421. was to all who came by faith,

  422. convicted of their sin

  423. and believing that the Lord Jesus Christ

  424. died in their place

  425. to pay the penalty for sin

  426. and to satisfy the judgment of God.

  427. The amazing thing that we find

  428. in this passage is this.

  429. The world that desperately needed

  430. and still needs salvation

  431. and the Jews as well

  432. who had received incredible blessings

  433. through being Abraham's children

  434. both equally rejected the light.

  435. Look at what it says there.

  436. He came into the world

  437. and the world was made through him

  438. and yet the world did not know him.

  439. It's not, I don't know him.

  440. It's just saying I don't want him.

  441. And verse 11,

  442. he came to his own.

  443. He came to the Jews.

  444. And what was the response of the Jews

  445. when they recognized

  446. this is the one that has come

  447. according to promise,

  448. according to prophecy,

  449. they said I don't want him.

  450. I don't want to have anything

  451. to do with him.

  452. And as we saw last week in John

  453. and also in Romans,

  454. fallen mankind does not simply

  455. reject the light out of ignorance

  456. but rejects the light

  457. out of an intentional hardening

  458. of the heart that says

  459. I do not want what Christ has to offer.

  460. Sinful men willingly choose

  461. to reject the light

  462. because of the blackness

  463. and darkness of their heart.

  464. I remind you of what it says

  465. in John chapter 3.

    John 3 chapter mention

  466. It says that they refuse the light.

  467. Why?

  468. Because their deeds are evil.

  469. They don't want to come to grips

  470. with the reality

  471. of the condition of their soul

  472. and when the light turns on

  473. instead of saying I need that light

  474. I desperately recognize

  475. the condition of my heart.

  476. They say hey I don't want that.

  477. I refuse it.

  478. So let's take up the final piece

  479. of our study this morning

  480. and understand what we find there

  481. in verse 12 and 13.

  482. Here's the reality.

  483. God sent John the Baptist

  484. as the forerunner,

  485. as an announcer to make it clear

  486. to the unbelieving world

  487. I am sending my Messiah,

  488. the Savior of the world

  489. and he is available to all.

  490. He's the light.

  491. He's the life.

  492. He's the one in whom alone

  493. you have opportunity

  494. of complete deliverance

  495. for all of your sin

  496. and the hope of eternity.

  497. And in the face of that

  498. beautiful, wonderful message

  499. the unbelieving world

  500. and unbelieving Jews said

  501. hey I don't want anything

  502. to do with that.

  503. No thank you.

  504. Well, does darkness win?

  505. Does darkness win?

  506. You look there in verse 12

  507. it says,

  508. But to all who did receive him

  509. who believed in his name

  510. he gave the right

  511. to become the children of God

  512. who were born not of blood

  513. nor of the will of the flesh

  514. nor of the will of man

  515. but of God.

  516. And so as we look at

  517. verse 12 and 13

  518. what we are seeing here

  519. is the absolute undeniable miracle

  520. that salvation is.

  521. I want you to listen

  522. to the sweet truth that follows

  523. because some have received him

  524. that's what it says

  525. and some will receive him

  526. still in this day.

  527. Some have believed in him

  528. and those who have believed in him

  529. have become the children of God.

  530. So let me put together

  531. verse 12 and 13

  532. 11 and 12 this way

  533. say that verse 11

  534. announces what faith does

  535. and verse 12

  536. tells us how faith comes.

  537. Verse 11 says

  538. what faith does

  539. verse 12 says

  540. how faith comes.

  541. It would be easy

  542. to look around

  543. in the world today

  544. and all you got to do

  545. is listen to the news

  546. and everywhere you turn

  547. you are just almost overwhelmed

  548. by the unbelievable darkness

  549. and cruelty of the world we see.

  550. Isn't that right?

  551. It's not just in Syria

  552. and Iraq

  553. where people are suffering

  554. for their faith.

  555. It's not just in the Sudan

  556. and places where

  557. where women are being

  558. grossly abused

  559. because they're believers.

  560. These are not just

  561. the only places

  562. where the darkness

  563. of sin exists

  564. and the brutality

  565. of the heart

  566. of unregenerate men

  567. and women

  568. comes to the fore.

  569. Everywhere you look

  570. you see the ugliness

  571. of the darkness

  572. of men's souls.

  573. And as you look at that

  574. you understand

  575. man it is a horrible world

  576. that we live in

  577. and yet we understand

  578. as it says there

  579. in verse 12

  580. it says

  581. verse 11

  582. and 12

  583. it says

  584. but to all who did receive him

  585. who believed in his name

  586. he gave the right

  587. he gave the right

  588. to become the children of God.

  589. It's amazing at all

  590. that any

  591. any at all

  592. get the message

  593. and receive the truth

  594. and come to the light.

  595. and because of this response

  596. to the truth

  597. they become the children of God.

  598. To receive and believe

  599. is to respond

  600. to the truth of our sin.

  601. To receive the truth

  602. means to accept it

  603. and say

  604. I believe that that is right

  605. about me

  606. and I am in a desperate condition

  607. and I can't do anything about it.

  608. Not too long ago

  609. talking with an individual

  610. about the issue

  611. of their salvation

  612. and the reality

  613. of the condition

  614. of their soul

  615. and as we really got down

  616. to the nitty gritty

  617. it came out that

  618. well this person's idea

  619. was that

  620. hey listen

  621. I'm doing the best I can

  622. and the best that I can

  623. is good enough.

  624. Well I want to tell you this

  625. if mankind

  626. could get to heaven

  627. on the basis

  628. of their own good efforts

  629. then Jesus would never

  630. have had to come

  631. and his dying on the cross

  632. was an absolute waste

  633. and exercise in futility.

  634. Jesus came

  635. because we cannot

  636. save ourselves.

  637. And I want you

  638. to understand

  639. the blessing

  640. that comes

  641. with being God's child

  642. turn over if you will

  643. you're in John chapter 1

    John 1 chapter mention

  644. but turn if you will

  645. to 1 John chapter 3

    1 John 3 chapter mention

  646. 1 John chapter 3

    1 John 3 chapter mention

  647. towards the very end

  648. of the Bible

  649. but listen to what it says

  650. in 1 John chapter 3

    1 John 3:1

  651. verse 1

  652. and 2

  653. it says

  654. see what kind of love

  655. the Father

  656. has given to us

  657. that we should be called

  658. the children of God.

  659. and so we are

  660. and I want you

  661. to recognize

  662. this morning

  663. when that passage

  664. penned by John

  665. says

  666. see what manner

  667. he was kind of saying

  668. wow

  669. look at that

  670. that we should be called

  671. the children of God.

  672. Does it get any better

  673. than that?

  674. And the answer is

  675. no.

  676. No.

  677. there was a day

  678. when each of you here

  679. that at one point

  680. did not know

  681. the Lord Jesus Christ

  682. were a child of Satan

  683. were doomed

  684. to eternal destruction

  685. were under the slave

  686. grip of Satan

  687. and were doing

  688. pretty much everything

  689. he wanted you to do

  690. and God in his kindness

  691. and his mercy

  692. came to help you

  693. see the darkness

  694. of your condition

  695. and he opened your eyes

  696. and he gave life

  697. to a dead heart

  698. and he brought salvation

  699. to you

  700. and he made you

  701. his child

  702. he blessed you

  703. and John says

  704. hey let me tell you

  705. something

  706. those who did receive him

  707. who believed in his name

  708. he gave the right

  709. to become the children

  710. of God

  711. well we understand

  712. what faith does

  713. it receives

  714. but let's also think

  715. about how this comes about

  716. how does faith come

  717. so as you look

  718. at verse 13

  719. you find three

  720. very interesting

  721. statements

  722. that the apostle

  723. makes that we need

  724. to mark

  725. he says there

  726. he says

  727. who were born

  728. not of blood

  729. not of blood

  730. there are some

  731. different opinions

  732. of what blood

  733. has to do

  734. with this issue

  735. and some would say

  736. that it has to do

  737. with physical birth

  738. I would take it

  739. to mean

  740. that this statement

  741. is talking about

  742. the fact that

  743. salvation

  744. was not something

  745. that came about

  746. because of a certain

  747. ethnicity

  748. why do you think

  749. what do you think

  750. the Jews thought

  751. about salvation

  752. they thought

  753. that because

  754. they were Jews

  755. they had what

  756. salvation

  757. one of the rabbis

  758. taught that

  759. Abraham camped

  760. towards the very end

  761. of the slide

  762. down towards hell

  763. and when he saw

  764. someone skittering

  765. down towards

  766. eternal hell

  767. and he noticed

  768. that the person

  769. was circumcised

  770. he'd snatched that guy

  771. because Jews

  772. didn't go to hell

  773. and here is

  774. John saying

  775. hey listen

  776. let me tell you

  777. something

  778. salvation is not

  779. something that comes

  780. because of your

  781. ethnicity

  782. now we're sitting

  783. here and we're

  784. thinking well

  785. I'm not a Jew

  786. but you know

  787. it's pretty easy

  788. to get caught up

  789. in the idea

  790. well why am I saved

  791. oh I tell you

  792. what I love

  793. those testimonies

  794. I grew up

  795. in a Christian

  796. home

  797. so

  798. that's a good

  799. thing

  800. but do people

  801. get to heaven

  802. because they grew

  803. up in a Christian

  804. home and the answer

  805. is not on your

  806. life

  807. not of blood

  808. secondly we find

  809. there it says

  810. nor of the will

  811. of the flesh

  812. that word flesh

  813. is talking about

  814. the emotions

  815. and so

  816. salvation is not

  817. a birthright

  818. it's not a matter

  819. of emotional stirring

  820. and I want to

  821. make it clear

  822. for a person

  823. who is passionate

  824. about preaching

  825. the gospel

  826. and has no hesitation

  827. of being moved

  828. emotionally

  829. when I appeal

  830. to people

  831. to come to Christ

  832. I want you

  833. to understand

  834. nevertheless

  835. that salvation

  836. is not

  837. an emotional

  838. decision

  839. I've been moved

  840. to all kinds

  841. of things

  842. and we need

  843. to be very careful

  844. that we understand

  845. that ultimately

  846. the issue

  847. of salvation

  848. is not just

  849. a matter of

  850. having had

  851. an emotional

  852. experience

  853. now some of us

  854. grew up

  855. in an environment

  856. where if they

  857. didn't have

  858. an adequate number

  859. at the altar

  860. guess what

  861. they would

  862. do

  863. well let me

  864. give you a little

  865. rendition of it

  866. now as we are

  867. singing verse 19

  868. of just as I am

  869. okay

  870. and if nobody

  871. comes for I want

  872. the organist

  873. this morning

  874. I want to get

  875. on those keys

  876. I want you to

  877. play it quietly

  878. and there's some

  879. of you out here

  880. that if you don't

  881. come I'm coming

  882. down

  883. you know

  884. listen

  885. can you be

  886. moved emotionally

  887. to make decisions

  888. and the answer

  889. is you bet

  890. you

  891. but in the

  892. unbelieving world

  893. we have three

  894. days in which

  895. to reverse

  896. our decision

  897. how many of you

  898. understand that

  899. I can sell you

  900. a vacuum sweeper

  901. that you think

  902. is going to take

  903. you to heaven

  904. but three days

  905. later you may

  906. decide you don't

  907. want it

  908. and you can

  909. say no

  910. emotion

  911. doesn't save us

  912. furthermore

  913. it says there

  914. in verse 13

  915. nor of the

  916. will of man

  917. that's talking

  918. about

  919. the intellect

  920. so

  921. why did you

  922. come to Christ

  923. well

  924. I was figuring

  925. it out

  926. I read the

  927. Bible

  928. it just

  929. made sense

  930. to me

  931. bada bada

  932. bing

  933. I decided

  934. I'd be a

  935. Christian

  936. you follow

  937. that

  938. I'm

  939. all for

  940. apologetics

  941. but nobody

  942. has ever

  943. come to

  944. Christ

  945. simply

  946. on the

  947. basis

  948. of an

  949. apologetic

  950. argument

  951. do you

  952. follow

  953. that

  954. dead

  955. men

  956. do not

  957. come

  958. to life

  959. just

  960. because

  961. the

  962. intellectual

  963. argument

  964. for the

  965. reality

  966. of God

  967. is so

  968. persuasive

  969. that they

  970. are

  971. absolutely

  972. crushed

  973. by the

  974. weight

  975. of

  976. intellect

  977. no

  978. so

  979. how are

  980. men

  981. saved

  982. let me

  983. read it

  984. to you

  985. who were

  986. born

  987. not of

  988. blood

  989. nor of the

  990. will of the

  991. flesh

  992. nor of

  993. will of

  994. man

  995. but

  996. of

  997. God

  998. let me

  999. have you

  1000. look at a

  1001. companion

  1002. passage

  1003. I'm

  1004. fired up

  1005. about

  1006. this

  1007. so just

  1008. bear with

  1009. me

  1010. turn in

  1011. your

  1012. Bible

  1013. can we

  1014. ever get

  1015. away from

  1016. the book

  1017. of Ephesians

  1018. I don't

  1019. think so

  1020. Ephesians

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  1021. chapter 2

  1022. the idea

  1023. that salvation

  1024. is something

  1025. that we

  1026. can be

  1027. manipulated

  1028. emotionally

  1029. into deciding

  1030. about

  1031. or we

  1032. can be

  1033. persuaded

  1034. intellectually

  1035. into deciding

  1036. about

  1037. has no

  1038. basis

  1039. in the

  1040. scriptures

  1041. because in

  1042. the Bible

  1043. it makes it

  1044. clear that

  1045. salvation

  1046. is of

  1047. the Lord

  1048. Ephesians

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  1049. chapter 2

  1050. we start

  1051. out with

  1052. some pretty

  1053. ugly news

  1054. it says

  1055. but you

  1056. were dead

  1057. in the

  1058. trespasses

  1059. and sins

  1060. by the

  1061. way

  1062. verse

  1063. number 9

  1064. of just

  1065. as I

  1066. am

  1067. does it

  1068. do

  1069. anything

  1070. for a

  1071. dead

  1072. carcass

  1073. lying in

  1074. a

  1075. funeral

  1076. home

  1077. and the

  1078. answer

  1079. is

  1080. no

  1081. no

  1082. no

  1083. putting

  1084. Josh

  1085. McDowell's

  1086. evidence

  1087. that demands

  1088. a verdict

  1089. on top

  1090. of the

  1091. casket

  1092. does that

  1093. cause the

  1094. person

  1095. to rise

  1096. up

  1097. no

  1098. no

  1099. no

  1100. but the

  1101. God who

  1102. saves

  1103. was the

  1104. one who

  1105. spoke

  1106. and brought

  1107. life

  1108. from death

  1109. and here's

  1110. what it

  1111. says

  1112. you were

  1113. dead in

  1114. trespasses

  1115. and sin

  1116. kind of

  1117. skipping

  1118. ahead

  1119. it says

  1120. there in

  1121. verse 5

  1122. by grace

  1123. you were

  1124. saved

  1125. and then

  1126. in verse

  1127. 7

  1128. and verse

  1129. 8 it

  1130. says

  1131. for by grace

  1132. you have

  1133. been saved

  1134. through faith

  1135. and so that

  1136. we don't

  1137. get confused

  1138. with the

  1139. natural

  1140. tendency

  1141. of

  1142. kind of

  1143. taking a

  1144. little bit

  1145. of credit

  1146. to

  1147. ourself

  1148. here's

  1149. what it

  1150. says

  1151. in verse

  1152. 8 the

  1153. latter part

  1154. and this

  1155. is not

  1156. of your

  1157. own

  1158. doing

  1159. it is

  1160. the

  1161. what

  1162. the gift

  1163. of God

  1164. not the

  1165. result of

  1166. works

  1167. so that

  1168. no may

  1169. boast

  1170. god

  1171. god

  1172. god

  1173. god

  1174. god

1175. and if we who are sitting here this morning

1176. stop to consider the reality of our salvation

1177. and the fact that we who once were the children of slavery

1178. once the children of Satan

1179. to recognize that we enjoy personal relationship

1180. with the Lord and creator of this universe

1181. it is because salvation is of the Lord

1182. and he in his grace saved us

1183. so what obligation does that bring to us

1184. do you know what it does

1185. first of all to be individuals who with gladness proclaim

1186. the wonder and majesty of our Savior

1187. we ought to spend the rest of our life

1188. in a spirit of thanksgiving say wow

1189. I can't believe he loves me and he's given me salvation

1190. and I want the rest of you to find out about the one I love

  1191. secondly

1192. because we have been saved by his grace

1193. we also have a burden and an obligation

1194. to live lives that do not complicate the gospel

1195. do you follow what I'm saying

  1196. hey listen

1197. if you live like a skunk

  1198. Monday through Saturday

1199. you don't have much power to do anything

1200. other than drive people away

1201. from the sweetness of the gospel

1202. if your vocabulary is a shame to the Lord Jesus Christ

  1203. where you work

1204. don't expect to have much of an impact

1205. on people who desperately need Christ

1206. and we who have been saved by the Lord Jesus

  1207. have a longing

1208. to see the one who has loved us

1209. and the one who has saved us

1210. high and exalted and lifted up

1211. and we want to be able to say

  1212. that's the one I love

1213. that's the one who can save

1214. and so let me close

  1215. with this question

  1216. first of all

  1217. do you know him

1218. are you sitting here today

1219. as one who by the grace of God

1220. has come to know the Lord Jesus Christ

  1221. then here's the truth

1222. you have been saved for a purpose

  1223. like John the Baptist

  1224. of saying

1225. come to the Lord Jesus

1226. that you might have forgiveness

1227. for all of your sins

1228. and if you're here today

1229. and you do not know Christ

1230. you may have grown up

  1231. in a Christian home

1232. you may have been baptized

1233. you may know all the Bible verses

1234. but here's the truth of the matter

  1235. you have never had

  1236. the transforming power

  1237. of the gospel

  1238. change your life

  1239. bring conviction

  1240. and then deliverance

  1241. and salvation

1242. and you've never been able to

  1243. in reality say

  1244. Jesus is my savior

  1245. and I know him

1246. I would plead with you

  1247. this morning

  1248. where you sit

  1249. you humble yourself

  1250. and say

  1251. I need Jesus desperately

  1252. I'm fooling myself

1253. and I'm not going to do it anymore

1254. and you plead with him

  1255. to save you

  1256. where you sit

  1257. let's bow our heads

  1258. our father God

  1259. this morning

  1260. we are very thankful

  1261. for the blessing

  1262. of your word

  1263. that makes it clear

  1264. that the Lord Jesus

1265. is the light of the world

  1266. we're thankful

  1267. that salvation

  1268. is something

  1269. that you do

  1270. first of all

  1271. by convicting us

  1272. of our sin

  1273. and bringing us

  1274. to the point

  1275. of seeing the absolute

  1276. darkness

  1277. and bankruptcy

  1278. of our soul

  1279. and in the misery

  1280. of that conviction

  1281. you graciously lift up

  1282. the truth

1283. that the Lord Jesus Christ

  1284. came into the world

  1285. to save sinners

1286. and he paid the penalty

  1287. for my sin

1288. and for all of our sins

  1289. and he offers salvation

  1290. to whosoever

  1291. will call upon

1292. the name of the Lord

  1293. and I would plead

  1294. with you father

  1295. this morning

  1296. that you would honor

  1297. your son

1298. by drawing to the cross

  1299. those that are here

  1300. that are broken

  1301. in their sin

  1302. and desperately need

  1303. the Lord Jesus

1304. we ask this in Jesus name

  1305. Amen

  1306. I'm going to ask

  1307. that you stand together

1308. as we sing in closing

  1309. let's stand

  1310. and if you're here

  1311. this morning

1312. and the spirit of God

  1313. is addressing an issue

1314. you need to care for

  1315. publicly

  1316. it might be

  1317. that you're here

  1318. and you need Christ

  1319. as your personal savior

  1320. I don't know

1321. the condition of your heart

1322. but the spirit of God does

  1323. and if you're here

  1324. and you need Christ

  1325. to save you

  1326. then you humble yourself

1327. and cry out for him

  1328. to do that

1329. and if you want to share

  1330. that with us

  1331. you come forward

  1332. and have somebody

  1333. pray with you

  1334. and encourage you

  1335. from the scriptures

  1336. it might be

  1337. that you're here

  1338. and you are

  1339. a child of God

  1340. but you've not connected

1341. to a body of believers

1342. and let me tell you something

1343. being part of the local church

  1344. is important

  1345. and you're willing

  1346. to humble yourself

  1347. and say

1348. I'm willing to take that step

  1349. you come forward

  1350. it might be

1351. that you need to be baptized

  1352. in obedience

  1353. you've come to faith

  1354. but you've never publicly

  1355. made that an issue

1356. that you have acted upon

  1357. with baptism

  1358. and I encourage you

1359. to take care of that

1360. as we sing this song

  1361. in closing

1362. what can take a dying man

1363. and raise him up to life again

1364. what can heal a wounded soul

1365. what can make us white a stone

1366. what can fill the emptiness

1367. what can mend our brokenness

  1368. brokenness

  1369. mighty awesome

  1370. wonderful

  1371. is the holy cross

1372. mighty is the power of the cross

1373. mighty is the power of the cross

1374. mighty is the power of the cross

1375. what can lead the cross

1376. what restores our faith in God

1377. what reveals the Father's love

1378. what can lead the wayward home

1379. what can melt a heart of stone

1380. what can free the guilty ones

1381. what can save and own
