  1. This is a very special day in the calendar of this church.

  2. It's a day that we restart our small group ministry after a bit of a vacation during the summer.

  3. !

  4. As a consequence, because of the significance of this day, last week Pastor opened his scriptures as to the why we do small groups.

  5. Even before the exact dates of his vacation were planned, he had planned last week the why we do small group,

  6. and this week the how do we do small groups.

  7. And as I was considering it and praying about it and what passage to ask you to turn to,

  8. I considered what do we mean by small groups.

  9. I remembered, I don't know why I thought of this, but I did,

  10. one of the significant budgetary changes that we made for small groups was the issue of training.

  11. It is our desire that every one of our small group leaders attend biblical counseling training,

  12. and almost every one of them has done that.

  13. And we want to continue to have that happening.

  14. We've got a couple of, we have one couple that's going to be going three weekends here in the next month,

  15. this leader this month actually,

  16. and then we have already two couples that are planning to go over to Lafayette in Indiana next year.

  17. You see, biblical counseling is simply one step that's used in helping a person grow spiritually.

  18. It's one step in the process.

  19. And Josh is up here because I asked him to come up here.

  20. He's not just ready to remove me if I say something wrong.

  21. Josh has a purpose here, okay?

  22. And what I wanted to do was to give you a picture of what does it mean,

  23. what is biblical counseling?

  24. What is it all about?

  25. What does it mean?

  26. So Josh is going to be my illustration here.

  27. And I've got my iPhone here.

  28. I'm going to just kind of lay right here, okay?

  29. And Josh starts out right over here, okay?

  30. Josh starts out with salvation, all right?

  31. He starts right here, and he looks an awful lot like Josh, okay?

  32. The process, the program for Josh is for him to move across here until he gets over here.

  33. I'm not going to go over there because I don't belong there either.

  34. And he looks where he looks an awful lot like Jesus Christ, okay?

  35. That's discipleship.

  36. That's spiritual growth.

  37. That's what's supposed to happen in every one of our lives.

  38. Unfortunately, sometimes Josh gets started, okay?

  39. And he's going along, but see, he's gotten distracted.

  40. I've got to come along and say, Josh, it's okay.

  41. It's okay.

  42. Just keep moving.

  43. Just keep moving.

  44. Keep going, okay?

  45. Sometimes that's what happens to us, right?

  46. Sometimes, sometimes Josh gets started off, and he's growing spiritually.

  47. He's getting to be more like what happened.

  48. He got completely sidetracked.

  49. He's not even progressing to look like Jesus Christ anymore.

  50. He's stuck on the world.

  51. What are you doing with my phone?

  52. Okay?

  53. And what I need to do is stop him getting to put down my phone and say,

  54. come on, Josh, we've got to keep moving this way.

  55. Sometimes the person gets started.

  56. They're walking along.

  57. They're looking more and more like Christ.

  58. It's like they're almost at the end.

  59. And it goes right back to the stuff that was distracting them before.

  60. Thanks, Josh.

  61. So I thought about biblical counseling, what biblical counseling is and what it's meant to be.

  62. I thought of a passage that is what we want to be the center of our small groups.

  63. Would you turn your Bibles to Colossians chapter 1?

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  64. I'm going to read verses 24 to 29, which is one long sentence.

  65. Okay?

  66. Apostle Paul liked long sentences.

  67. And then we're going to focus on the last half of the sentence in verses 28 and 29.

  68. Colossians chapter 1 and verses 24.

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  69. Now I rejoice in my suffering for your sake, and in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in Christ's afflictions for the sake of his body.

  70. That is, the church of which I became a minister according to the stewardship from God that was given to me for you,

  71. to make the word of God fully known.

  72. The mystery hidden for ages and generations, but now revealed to his saints.

  73. To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery,

  74. which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

  75. Him we proclaim, warning everyone, teaching everyone with all wisdom that we may present everyone mature in Christ.

  76. For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me.

  77. This morning, as I said, we're going to concentrate on what I believe constitutes the summary of ministry.

  78. That's what we find in verses 28 and 29.

  79. This is how we do small group.

  80. I'm going to relate it in three ways.

  81. First of all, the focus.

  82. Second, the way they function.

  83. And third, who is the true facilitator of small groups.

  84. First one is our function.

  85. I'm sorry, our focus.

  86. Verse 29 says, him we proclaim.

  87. Proclaim, here's the general term.

  88. It's not restricted to formal preaching,

  89. but rather it indicates all of communication.

  90. Paul is saying here that all he talked about was Christ.

  91. He was a one-topic person.

  92. You know any one-topic people?

  93. It's a person that no matter what question you ask them,

  94. they always want to talk about the same thing.

  95. It might be golf.

  96. It might be football.

  97. It might be cooking.

  98. It might be anything.

  99. They're focused on one thing,

  100. and the only thing they talk about is that one thing.

  101. Paul was one of those people.

  102. But for Paul, it was Jesus.

  103. Every time he talked to someone,

  104. it didn't matter whether it was the highfalutin people

  105. or the common people,

  106. whether Paul was talking to King Agrippa,

  107. the military commander,

  108. a tradesperson like Lydia,

  109. a common prison guard like in Philippi,

  110. a soldier fastened to him in a Roman custody,

  111. the philosophers of Athens,

  112. or the religious leaders of Israel,

  113. Paul had one topic, Jesus.

  114. Whether we're considering Paul's messages in the book of Acts

  115. or one of the many epistles,

  116. one thing is sure,

  117. you're going to get a full dose of Christ.

  118. But, you know,

  119. despite all of his education

  120. and his training,

  121. Paul doesn't give us a whole lot of ivory tower,

  122. head-swelling information,

  123. theory that doesn't have any practice to it.

  124. Rather, you're going to get a rich theology

  125. that presents the truth of Jesus Christ

  126. and then applies it step by step

  127. in the lives of people.

  128. At the deepest level,

  129. the apostle conceived of his message

  130. not as a system,

  131. not as a collection of rules and regulations,

  132. but as a living and glorious person

  133. who is the fulfillment of the deepest hopes of mankind

  134. and the source of new life to his people.

  135. You find teaching that centers on a person

  136. and change lives.

  137. So what is the connection there to our small groups?

  138. Our small groups are not centered on social interaction,

  139. pragmatic attempts to increase the Sunday evening attendance,

  140. or meeting the felt needs of members,

  141. but to glorify our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

  142. When we forget that,

  143. when we ignore it,

  144. or if we simply don't keep working at it,

  145. making that the focus,

  146. then we've lost the one thing that really matters.

  147. And if you walk out of here today,

  148. and you can only remember one thing that I said,

  149. I would sure like it to be that.

  150. So let me say it again a little bit more simply.

  151. Our small groups are centered on glorifying

  152. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  153. Period.

  154. So what does it mean to glorify Christ?

  155. In Jesus' high priestly prayer in John 17,

  156. he begins with this concept of glorifying him.

  157. And in that, he covers ideas such as attention to his word,

  158. being sanctified,

  159. being unified with other believers,

  160. and having the love of Christ.

  161. So if I would summarize,

  162. it comes down to this.

  163. Two of the best ways to glorify Christ

  164. is to obey him and love others.

  165. This really comes out throughout Scripture,

  166. but especially here in the New Testament.

  167. Remember when Jesus was asked to summarize the whole Testament.

  168. Break down the law for us, Jesus,

  169. and tell us what is the one most important thing.

  170. And what was his answer?

  171. Love the Lord your God with all your heart,

  172. with all your soul,

  173. with all your mind,

  174. and with all your strength.

  175. And love your neighbor as yourself.

  176. How do I know that I love him

  177. with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength?

  178. Jesus answered that one too.

  179. He said, if you love me, keep my commandments.

  180. So let me connect it for you,

  181. very plainly,

  182. to ensure that Jesus Christ

  183. is the center of our small groups,

  184. we all need to grow in obeying Christ

  185. and loving one another.

  186. That's what I was pointing out with Josh.

  187. Josh needed to keep moving,

  188. keep moving forward and growing

  189. to be more like Christ.

  190. And the purpose of small groups

  191. is what I was doing,

  192. where I came along beside him

  193. and I said, no, don't pay attention to that thing.

  194. Or pulling him back,

  195. and Josh made it easy for me,

  196. to show you that sometimes

  197. we need to be pulled back.

  198. Sometimes it's not enough

  199. to just say,

  200. well, you know,

  201. you really ought to follow Jesus.

  202. So let's next look at the way

  203. our small groups function.

  204. Colossians 1.28 says,

  205. warning everyone,

  206. teaching everyone,

  207. with all wisdom

  208. that we may present everyone

  209. mature in Christ.

  210. The first thing I want you to notice there,

  211. and I tried to highlight it for you,

  212. is that everyone appears three times.

  213. It appears after each verb in this verse.

  214. I think that's significant.

  215. Spiritual growth in Christ's likeness

  216. is not restricted to the few.

  217. It's not only the pastors.

  218. It's not only the deacons.

  219. It's not only the biggies of the church.

  220. It's not even only the adults.

  221. It is everyone.

  222. Everyone.

  223. Not everyone is capable

  224. of an advanced degree in mathematics.

  225. Not everyone is capable

  226. of running a sub-four-minute mile.

  227. Not everyone is capable

  228. of climbing the corporate ladder

  229. to the place where you're CEO

  230. of the multinational corporation.

  231. But everyone, everyone

  232. is able to come to the maturity

  233. that Paul speaks about here.

  234. Each and every one of us.

  235. Not only are we able,

  236. but we are expected.

  237. Every single Christian

  238. is capable of the maturity

  239. that Paul talks about.

  240. Two things.

  241. Can I encourage you

  242. on the small groups?

  243. The first one is

  244. small groups need to make sure

  245. that everyone is involved,

  246. everyone is growing,

  247. everyone is serving.

  248. What does that mean?

  249. What means this?

  250. That, of course,

  251. the activities must be age-appropriate.

  252. I've worked with twos and threes

  253. off and on for years.

  254. I understand that a two-year-old

  255. cannot handle a 45-minute lecture.

  256. Okay?

  257. Okay?

  258. On the other hand,

  259. a three-year-old,

  260. a four-year-old, maybe,

  261. four-year-old who has come to Jesus

  262. can have a short Bible lesson

  263. and can pray for other people

  264. in a small group.

  265. Small groups should not just be

  266. two hours

  267. where we send the kids off

  268. and give mommy and daddy a break.

  269. Small group ought to be for everybody.

  270. Second thing.

  271. It should not just be

  272. one person teaching many,

  273. but many teaching one another.

  274. There is a leader

  275. in the small group.

  276. There should not be a lecturer

  277. in the small group.

  278. I have to fight this

  279. as much as anybody.

  280. I can obviously talk

  281. without anybody else talking

  282. for 45 minutes,

  283. and it's okay.

  284. Okay?

  285. I understand some people can't.

  286. I can do that,

  287. but I should not do that.

  288. I want to get people involved

  289. because the way that

  290. someone in my small group

  291. like Kate

  292. or the way that Jeff

  293. or the way that Margie

  294. says something

  295. in my small group

  296. may be just the way

  297. that somebody else

  298. needed to hear it

  299. that I couldn't even

  300. think of it that way.

  301. We work together.

  302. We teach each other.

  303. So what are the things

  304. that we should be doing

  305. with everyone?

  306. The first one it says

  307. is warning.

  308. Some translations

  309. use the word admonishing.

  310. Let me start out

  311. with a definition for you,

  312. and then I'm going

  313. to explain it just a little bit.

  314. Sorry, I'm getting

  315. distracted here.

  316. Okay.

  317. It's this.

  318. Biblical warning

  319. or admonition

  320. is the process

  321. of applying the Scripture

  322. to the issues

  323. of our individual lives.

  324. Biblical warning

  325. or admonition

  326. is the process

  327. of applying the Scripture

  328. to the individual issues

  329. in people's lives.

  330. It includes the idea

  331. of setting someone's mind straight

  332. with the idea

  333. that it's not quite straight

  334. right now.

  335. It has to do with will

  336. and emotions,

  337. and it connotates warning.

  338. It can relate

  339. to non-Christians

  340. with the thought being

  341. that the apostle

  342. sought to awaken

  343. each one of them

  344. to their need for Christ,

  345. or it can focus

  346. on warning of Christians

  347. who might be tempted

  348. to stray.

  349. It could be simply

  350. the person

  351. who's distracted.

  352. It could be the person

  353. who's turned aside

  354. and not growing anymore.

  355. It could be the person

  356. who was on his way

  357. and backed up.

  358. So let's see how this relates

  359. to small groups.

  360. Involvement in one another's lives

  361. using Scripture.

  362. Involvement in one another's lives

  363. during Scripture.

  364. Not long ago,

  365. I had a very sad phone call,

  366. and I'm just going to be up front with you.

  367. I'm going to just lay it out.

  368. The person called me,

  369. and they said

  370. that they had this challenge

  371. that they were working on

  372. and that they had already

  373. asked all their friends.

  374. The person was from this ministry.

  375. They'd already asked

  376. all their friends,

  377. and their friends gave them

  378. this advice.

  379. And I listened to the advice,

  380. and I was a little troubled.

  381. So I said,

  382. so could you tell me

  383. what passage

  384. one of them used with that?

  385. And the person said,

  386. oh, nobody used a verse with me.

  387. My comment to them

  388. was,

  389. is that the advice you want?

  390. My brothers and sisters,

  391. that ought not to be.

  392. The advice,

  393. the counsel,

  394. the direction

  395. that we give

  396. to one another

  397. ought to be poured out,

  398. ought to be dripping

  399. with the Word of God.

  400. And if it's not,

  401. it's not good advice.

  402. Second thing,

  403. how do we make sure

  404. this warning takes place?

  405. The pastor mentioned

  406. this one

  407. in his training

  408. for small group leaders,

  409. and he asked me

  410. to repeat it

  411. for everybody.

  412. And that was

  413. making sure

  414. that our prayer requests

  415. are appropriate.

  416. What do I mean by that?

  417. We want to be involved

  418. in one another's lives.

  419. How can you be involved

  420. in one another's lives

  421. if you don't know

  422. what's going on?

  423. There needs to be

  424. a level of transparency

  425. or we can't be involved

  426. in one another's lives.

  427. On the other hand,

  428. every one of you

  429. has been in a situation

  430. where you're in

  431. some kind of a prayer group

  432. or going to pray

  433. for one another,

  434. and one person

  435. uses the prayer time

  436. for manipulation.

  437. I just want everyone

  438. to pray for my wife

  439. who's being very unsubmissive,

  440. and she just really needs

  441. to get right with God,

  442. and so I'm just going to,

  443. I just want you all

  444. to pray for her.

  445. Well, what did I just do?

  446. She can't say anything now,

  447. right?

  448. Except I guess

  449. I need to be submissive.

  450. I beat her into submission

  451. by using her

  452. as a prayer example.

  453. That's terrible.

  454. My prayer requests

  455. need to be appropriate,

  456. not used to manipulate

  457. other people,

  458. not used as a means

  459. of gossip.

  460. Well, I really,

  461. I don't want anybody

  462. to gossip about this,

  463. but I did want to share it

  464. with you for prayer.

  465. Well, if you shouldn't

  466. be gossiping about it,

  467. don't talk about it.

  468. You can tell Jesus about it,

  469. and that's enough.

  470. Those are two ways

  471. that that warning

  472. is to come about.

  473. Admonishing is to be

  474. with all wisdom.

  475. We're going to talk about this

  476. in each one of the two sections,

  477. but the warning

  478. and warning everyone

  479. and teaching everyone

  480. are parallel phrases.

  481. So both of them

  482. are to be done with wisdom.

  483. Wisdom refers to

  484. the practical discernment,

  485. understanding the biblical principles

  486. for holy conduct.

  487. The consistent pattern

  488. of God-honoring ministry

  489. is to link teaching

  490. and admonishment

  491. and bring them together

  492. in the context

  493. of the general doctrinal truths

  494. of the word.

  495. Doctrinal teaching

  496. is invariably

  497. followed by practical admonitions,

  498. and that has to be the pattern

  499. for all of ministry.

  500. Next thing in it

  501. is teaching everyone.

  502. Refers to teaching,

  503. and that refers to

  504. imparting positive Christian truth.

  505. The verb

  506. and its corresponding nouns

  507. of teacher and teaching

  508. are often used

  509. in the New Testament

  510. to denote authoritative communication

  511. of gospel truth,

  512. like preaching.

  513. At the same time,

  514. this truth is reinforced

  515. as believers

  516. teach one another.

  517. So teaching

  518. is the positive sense

  519. in which Scripture

  520. is spoken

  521. to increase

  522. and improve

  523. our understanding

  524. of who Christ is

  525. and what his ways are.

  526. Teaching is to lay out

  527. those two things

  528. so that we grow

  529. in our understanding

  530. and our knowledge.

  531. It does have

  532. the aspect

  533. of more information,

  534. but it has

  535. the aspect also

  536. of that information

  537. applied to our lives.

  538. It's the responsibility

  539. that's given to everyone.

  540. I want you to look

  541. at an illustration of that.

  542. You're in the book

  543. of Colossians.

  544. You just need to turn

  545. a page or two

  546. to Colossians chapter 3

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  547. and verse 16.

  548. Colossians chapter 3

    Colossians 3:16

  549. verse 16.

  550. Let the word of Christ

  551. dwell in you richly.

  552. Teaching and admonishing

  553. one another

  554. in all wisdom,

  555. singing psalms and hymns

  556. and spiritual songs

  557. with thanksgiving

  558. or thankfulness

  559. in your hearts

  560. to God.

  561. This verse is more about

  562. let's do another song.

  563. It points to everyone

  564. as Paul says

  565. because in this verse

  566. the you,

  567. let the word of Christ

  568. dwell in you richly.

  569. the you there is plural.

  570. It's like y'all.

  571. Okay?

  572. It means everybody in here.

  573. Not just one person.

  574. Not just those people

  575. who are teachers.

  576. Not just those people

  577. who are spiritual giants.

  578. Not just those people

  579. who are small group leaders.

  580. It applies to everybody

  581. at the church in Colossae.

  582. So first of all

  583. it applies to everyone.

  584. Secondly,

  585. it ties together

  586. the idea

  587. of in all wisdom

  588. with the word of Christ

  589. dwelling in you.

  590. Those two things

  591. go together.

  592. So in both passages,

  593. this one here

  594. in Colossians chapter 3

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  595. and back in Colossians chapter 1,

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  596. both passages then,

  597. with all wisdom

  598. seems to express the way

  599. that the admonishing

  600. and teaching were done.

  601. That says it's not

  602. just about funny stories.

  603. That it has at its core

  604. and at its root

  605. the word of God

  606. and that's the thing

  607. that is being used

  608. to help one another

  609. by admonishing and teaching.

  610. As people need wisdom

  611. to know how to live out

  612. the true knowledge of God

  613. so they need wisdom

  614. to know how to teach

  615. and admonish one another.

  616. And this wisdom

  617. comes only

  618. from the word of God.

  619. Third word there

  620. is presenting.

  621. The aim of Paul's

  622. proclaiming and admonishing

  623. and teaching

  624. was to present everyone

  625. perfect in Christ.

  626. Present refers to

  627. the bringing them

  628. into God's presence

  629. at the return of Christ.

  630. The example that I used

  631. with Josh

  632. as I had him walking

  633. from the point of salvation

  634. to the point

  635. of Christ-likeness

  636. we recognize

  637. that that actually

  638. is vertical.

  639. Right?

  640. That the only time

  641. any of us

  642. is going to be

  643. perfect in Christ

  644. and look just like him

  645. is when we see him

  646. as he is.

  647. Okay?

  648. So that's going

  649. to be vertical.

  650. I tried to illustrate

  651. it horizontally

  652. because Josh

  653. wasn't prepared

  654. to fly.

  655. Okay?

  656. So I couldn't have him

  657. moving up.

  658. This issue

  659. of progressing

  660. growing to be

  661. more like Christ

  662. we recognize

  663. that we're not there.

  664. None of us are.

  665. But said simply

  666. the goal

  667. of the ministry

  668. of small group

  669. is the maturity

  670. of the saints

  671. so that each one

  672. of us hears

  673. well done

  674. good and faithful

  675. servant

  676. when we stand

  677. before him

  678. in the last day.

  679. Shows up

  680. in this passage

  681. in Colossians

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  682. chapter 1

  683. all the way back

  684. in verse 22.

  685. I didn't start

  686. back there.

  687. I started in 24.

  688. But back in verse 22

  689. it points to the fact

  690. that it was Christ's aim

  691. to present us

  692. perfect before him.

  693. Here in 28

  694. it says

  695. that it was Paul's aim

  696. to present people

  697. perfect before Christ.

  698. I'm here to tell you

  699. today that it's

  700. your leadership's

  701. goal

  702. aim

  703. function

  704. for small groups

  705. to present people

  706. perfect in Christ.

  707. And I pray it's yours.

  708. The Greek word here

  709. that's translated

  710. mature

  711. is kind of challenging

  712. and so you see it

  713. different

  714. in different translations.

  715. Some translations

  716. use the word mature.

  717. Some translations

  718. use the word perfect.

  719. perfect.

  720. The idea of perfect

  721. in the English

  722. speaks of

  723. absolute completeness.

  724. Nothing missing

  725. whatsoever.

  726. Okay?

  727. It's perfect.

  728. Okay?

  729. And that's not

  730. the idea

  731. of the word

  732. in the Greek.

  733. So consequently

  734. some people

  735. have translated it

  736. mature

  737. just kind of saying

  738. well it's not

  739. really perfect.

  740. the trouble

  741. with using

  742. the word

  743. mature

  744. is that we

  745. have the idea

  746. that if we're

  747. older

  748. bigger

  749. stronger

  750. then we must

  751. be mature

  752. okay?

  753. And it ain't

  754. necessarily so.

  755. And we don't

  756. want to have

  757. that idea

  758. of relativeness.

  759. I can have

  760. a teenager

  761. that's more

  762. mature in

  763. Christ

  764. than

  765. an older

  766. person.

  767. The question

  768. is

  769. are they

  770. focused

  771. solely on

  772. Jesus Christ

  773. and is that

  774. the goal

  775. and the highlight

  776. of their life?

  777. Because that's

  778. the term.

  779. One commentator

  780. put it pretty well

  781. I thought.

  782. He said

  783. it is the

  784. complete

  785. and undivided

  786. way

  787. in which

  788. a person

  789. with all

  790. of their

  791. positive

  792. and negative

  793. attributes

  794. is oriented

  795. towards God

  796. or towards

  797. Christ.

  798. I thought

  799. that was

  800. pretty good.

  801. I got an

  802. even better

  803. one for you.

  804. Turn in

  805. your Bibles

  806. to Philippians

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  807. chapter 3

  808. and verse

  809. 13 and

  810. 14

  811. because I

  812. think

  813. Paul

  814. under the

  815. leading of

  816. the Holy

  817. Spirit

  818. put it

  819. even better.

  820. Philippians

  821. 3

  822. 13 and

  823. 14

  824. Brothers

  825. I do not

  826. consider

  827. that I

  828. have made

  829. it my

  830. own

  831. but one

  832. thing I

  833. do

  834. forgetting

  835. what lies

  836. behind

  837. and straining

  838. forward

  839. to what

  840. lies ahead

  841. I press

  842. on towards

  843. the goal

  844. for the

  845. prize

  846. of the

  847. upward

  848. call

  849. of God

  850. in Christ

  851. Jesus.

  852. Finally

  853. let's think

  854. about the

  855. facilitator

  856. of our

  857. small group

  858. ministry.

  859. Colossians

    Colossians 1:29

  860. chapter 1

  861. verse 29

  862. For this

  863. I toil

  864. struggling

  865. with all

  866. his energy

  867. that he

  868. powerfully

  869. works

  870. within me.

  871. The

  872. balance

  873. of

  874. Christian

  875. living.

  876. Paul

  877. says

  878. he gave

  879. the effort

  880. to serve

  881. and honor

  882. God

  883. with all

  884. of his

  885. might.

  886. Labor

  887. refers

  888. to working

  889. to the

  890. point

  891. of

  892. exhaustion.

  893. Striving

  894. is where

  895. we get

  896. the

  897. English

  898. word

  899. to

  900. agonize.

  901. It refers

  902. to the

  903. effort

  904. required

  905. to

  906. compete

  907. in an

  908. athletic

  909. event.

  910. Let's say it

  911. explicitly

  912. and simply

  913. and then I'll

  914. explain a little

  915. bit more.

  916. We're to put

  917. the same

  918. kind of

  919. effort

  920. into

  921. this,

  922. namely

  923. growing in

  924. our

  925. Christlikeness.

  926. We're to put

  927. the same

  928. kind of

  929. effort

  930. into

  931. this

  932. that we

  933. put

  934. into

  935. a

  936. career

  937. accomplishment

  938. or an

  939. athletic

  940. achievement.

  941. Time for

  942. a grandson

  943. story.

  944. Yesterday

  945. I went

  946. over,

  947. we've been

  948. driving over

  949. pretty well

  950. once or twice

  951. a week

  952. to see

  953. our

  954. grandsons

  955. run

  956. cross

  957. country.

  958. So yesterday

  959. we drove

  960. over to

  961. Lafayette,

  962. well actually

  963. we drove

  964. over Friday

  965. night and

  966. then we

  967. came back

  968. yesterday.

  969. Both of

  970. them did

  971. their best

  972. that they've

  973. done this

  974. year.

  975. But that's

  976. not what I

  977. want you to

  978. hear.

  979. What I want

  980. you to

  981. hear is

  982. this,

  983. that one

  984. of them

  985. he did

  986. just amazingly

  987. good.

  988. He's coming

  989. to the end

  990. and he

  991. was really

  992. sprinting to

  993. the finish.

  994. He got

  995. done and

  996. he said,

  997. I thought

  998. I was going

  999. to puke

  1000. right there

  1001. at the

  1002. finish line

  1003. in front

  1004. of everybody.

  1005. And I

  1006. thought,

  1007. that's it.

  1008. That's it.

  1009. we ought

  1010. to feel

  1011. like we're

  1012. working so

  1013. hard to

  1014. get to the

  1015. finish line

  1016. that I'm

  1017. going to

  1018. puke right

  1019. there,

  1020. right in

  1021. front of

  1022. everybody.

  1023. I hope

  1024. you think

  1025. about that.

  1026. Being

  1027. Christ-like

  1028. should be the

  1029. most important

  1030. thing in your

  1031. life.

  1032. Being Christ-like

  1033. ought to be the

  1034. thing that drives

  1035. you.

  1036. It's the thing

  1037. that pushes

  1038. you, keeps

  1039. you going when

  1040. you're tired,

  1041. when you're

  1042. wore out.

  1043. And ministry,

  1044. guess what,

  1045. can wear you

  1046. out.

  1047. Paul doesn't

  1048. go about his

  1049. work half-heartedly

  1050. hoping that,

  1051. you know,

  1052. God's good and

  1053. I think I'm

  1054. going to take a

  1055. nap this

  1056. afternoon and

  1057. just, you

  1058. know, God

  1059. will take care

  1060. of the lesson.

  1061. God will take

  1062. care of my

  1063. small group,

  1064. I'm sure about

  1065. it.

  1066. He doesn't

  1067. expect God's

  1068. grace to fill in

  1069. the gaps that he's

  1070. too lazy to work

  1071. at himself.

  1072. Nor, however,

  1073. does he think

  1074. that it's all

  1075. up to him.

  1076. So unless he

  1077. burns himself

  1078. out with

  1079. restless,

  1080. anxious toil,

  1081. nothing is going

  1082. to be achieved.

  1083. Because he knows

  1084. that it's Christ,

  1085. it's God's desire

  1086. to bring Christians

  1087. to maturity.

  1088. And that while

  1089. God has called

  1090. him to have a

  1091. share in that,

  1092. it is God's

  1093. job to do it.

  1094. So he can work

  1095. hard.

  1096. You can work

  1097. hard without any

  1098. of the stressful

  1099. motivation of

  1100. either pride or

  1101. fear.

  1102. Pride that you

  1103. can do it all

  1104. or fear that you

  1105. can't.

  1106. He becomes,

  1107. Paul becomes an

  1108. example of the

  1109. kind of maturity

  1110. that he's trying

  1111. to develop in

  1112. these other

  1113. people.

  1114. Paul can work

  1115. himself to the

  1116. point of exhaustion.

  1117. Paul can work

  1118. himself, if I had

  1119. been writing this

  1120. yesterday, I wrote,

  1121. Paul can work

  1122. himself to the

  1123. point of puking

  1124. and know that it's

1125. all of God and not

  1126. of him.

  1127. Let's look at a

  1128. similar passage,

  1129. 1 Timothy chapter

    1 Timothy 4 chapter mention

  1130. 4.

  1131. I just suddenly got

  1132. this feeling that

  1133. all the children

  1134. are going to

  1135. remember, the

  1136. only thing they're

  1137. going to remember

  1138. today is puking,

  1139. especially the

  1140. boys.

  1141. But anyway,

  1142. 1 Timothy chapter

    1 Timothy 4 chapter mention

  1143. 4.

  1144. 1 Timothy chapter

    1 Timothy 4:10

  1145. 4 verse 10.

1146. For to this end we

  1147. toil and strive,

  1148. because we have

  1149. our hope set on

  1150. the living God,

  1151. who is the

  1152. savior of all

  1153. people, especially

  1154. to those who

  1155. believe.

  1156. Why should each

  1157. one of us work

  1158. at small group?

  1159. Because our hope

  1160. is set on the

  1161. living God, that's

  1162. why.

  1163. So what does it

  1164. call us to do?

  1165. It calls us to

  1166. serve rather than

  1167. show up.

  1168. to serve, it

  1169. means to serve

  1170. one another by

  1171. helping.

  1172. It may be in

  1173. hosting.

  1174. It may be in

  1175. setup.

  1176. It may be in

  1177. cleanup.

  1178. It may be in

  1179. childcare.

  1180. It may be in

  1181. preparing for the

  1182. meal.

  1183. It may be in

  1184. preparing your

  1185. heart and your

  1186. mind for the

  1187. lesson that the

  1188. small group is

  1189. going to look at.

  1190. And the reason

  1191. we do those

  1192. things, unlike

  1193. something that was

  1194. on Facebook this

  1195. week, or last

  1196. week, is

  1197. not because it's

  1198. good for us.

  1199. It is because we

  1200. want to glorify our

  1201. Lord Jesus Christ.

  1202. On the one side,

  1203. we don't forget that

  1204. the effect of

  1205. striving or work

  1206. with spiritual and

  1207. eternal results is

  1208. always being done by

  1209. God, even if it's

  1210. through you.

  1211. It is only his

  1212. energy, his power,

  1213. working through us

  1214. that can accomplish

  1215. anything of value

  1216. to the kingdom.

  1217. All our toil and

  1218. hard work is

  1219. absolutely useless

  1220. apart from God's

  1221. power in our

  1222. lives.

  1223. God gave Paul the

  1224. strength to work

  1225. hard at his

  1226. ministry.

  1227. ministry.

  1228. And in fact, as

  1229. we know, he gave

  1230. his life for that.

  1231. He worked hard at

  1232. it.

1233. And God can do the

  1234. same thing in each

  1235. one of us.

  1236. Galatians 2.2,

  1237. I'm sorry, 2.20,

  1238. sums it up.

  1239. These two components

  1240. of human and divine

  1241. action.

  1242. Paul says, I've been

  1243. crucified with Christ.

  1244. Christ.

  1245. It's no longer I who

  1246. live, but Christ

  1247. lives in me.

1248. And the life which I

  1249. now live in the

1250. flesh, I live by faith

1251. in the Son of God

  1252. who loved me and

  1253. delivered himself up

  1254. for me.

  1255. So being centered on

  1256. Christ, making God's

  1257. word the means and

  1258. the foundation of

  1259. ministry.

  1260. ministry.

  1261. Working to the

  1262. point where we're

  1263. tired, but trusting

  1264. that all accomplishments

  1265. come from the Lord.

1266. This is how we do

  1267. small groups.

  1268. Come to think of

  1269. it, Colossians 1.28

  1270. and 29 looks an

  1271. awful lot like building

  1272. relationships that

  1273. build saints.

  1274. The theme idea that

  1275. we've used for, I

  1276. forget how long it's

  1277. been, eight years or

  1278. something like that.

  1279. And the question we

  1280. ask ourselves is, are

  1281. you involved or are

  1282. you a bystander?

1283. Do you show up or do

  1284. you serve?

  1285. Are you a

  1286. participator or are

  1287. you simply an

  1288. observer?

  1289. The purposes of our

  1290. small groups are to

1291. help each one of us

1292. grow to be more like

  1293. Jesus Christ.

  1294. There may be someone

  1295. here this morning and

  1296. you say, well, I don't

  1297. even know Jesus Christ.

1298. Well, this would be a

  1299. good day to change

  1300. that.

1301. And then you can come

1302. to a small group and

  1303. that small group will

1304. help you grow to be a

  1305. little more like

  1306. Christ.

1307. You may be here and

  1308. you're not really

  1309. involved in small

  1310. groups and in fact

  1311. you're not really

  1312. involved in growing.

  1313. Maybe going back to

  1314. the illustration with

  1315. Josh, maybe it's

  1316. because you just

  1317. keep looking at the

1318. world and it has this

  1319. drawl.

  1320. Maybe you find you've

  1321. actually gotten off the

  1322. track and you're just

  1323. standing over there

  1324. involved with the

  1325. world.

1326. Maybe you were on the

  1327. track.

  1328. Maybe you were

  1329. progressing and

  1330. something happened and

1331. you just kind of turned

  1332. aside.

  1333. building relationships

  1334. that build saints.

  1335. That's the purpose of

  1336. our small groups.

  1337. Let's pray.

  1338. Our great God, our

  1339. Savior, all to be

  1340. like thee.

  1341. we need to be

  1342. changed.

  1343. There's not a single

1344. one of us in this

  1345. auditorium that doesn't

  1346. need change.

  1347. There's not a single

1348. one of us in the

  1349. auditorium that has

  1350. accomplished, that has

  1351. gotten there, that's

  1352. reached the goal.

1353. And yet, Lord, we are

1354. so quickly and so easily

  1355. distracted that it's

  1356. embarrassing.

  1357. Even when we're going

  1358. on the path, we're

  1359. more often just jogging

  1360. along.

1361. Father, I pray that you

  1362. would bring conviction in

  1363. all of our hearts.

1364. Lord, that we might be

1365. drawn to the cross and

1366. drawn to act more like

1367. you, to want to be more

  1368. like you.

  1369. That our small groups

  1370. would grow in their

  1371. pointedness with one

  1372. another.

  1373. Not harshness, but

  1374. pointedness in the

  1375. scriptures.

1376. That we would be more

  1377. transparent with one

  1378. another without ever

1379. using our prayer time or

1380. our small group time as

  1381. simply a gossip session.

  1382. Or manipulation time.

1383. Father, help us to use our

  1384. small groups first and

1385. foremost to bring glory to

  1386. your son, Jesus Christ.

1387. First in his name we pray.

  1388. Amen.

  1389. that we have the

  1390. small groups that

  1391. have the

  1392. !

  1393. Half
