  1. I would like you to turn in your Bibles this morning

  2. to John chapter 1, and you follow as I read a portion of the passage that we're going to study together.

    John 1 chapter mention

  3. John chapter 1, picking up in verse 19.

    John 1 chapter mention

  4. And this is the testimony of John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him,

  5. Who are you? He confessed and did not deny, but confessed, I am not the Christ.

  6. And they asked him, What then? Are you Elijah? He said, I'm not. Are you the prophet? And he answered,

  7. No. And Seth said to him, Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us.

  8. What do you say about yourself? He said, I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness.

  9. Make straight the way of the Lord, as the prophet Isaiah said.

  10. Holy Father, we are humbled to stop and consider that we, mere created beings,

  11. have been given the blessing and the joy of knowing you as our God and our Savior,

  12. of having communion with you through the finished work of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  13. And that you and your loving kindness have revealed yourself to us through your word.

  14. And it is your express intention this morning that we who are your children would be blessed

  15. by your word, by the enabling of the Spirit of God.

  16. And Father, it is our prayer that this morning your word would have free course.

  17. There are some of us here this morning that are snared deeply by sin

  18. and desperately need the work of the Spirit to relieve.

  19. Some caught in bitterness.

  20. Some in unforgiveness.

  21. Some in secret sins that only you know about, Lord,

  22. but those who are your children

  23. have not received the blessing of salvation to be in bondage ever again.

  24. There are some here that desperately need to know Christ as their Savior.

  25. And so, as the word is taught,

  26. we who are your children will labor in prayer

  27. that your word would produce fruit first in our own lives

  28. and in the lives of others that you care about so deeply.

  29. And it is our desire that the Lord Jesus Christ would be honored

  30. this morning here

  31. among us

  32. as He is in heaven.

  33. We ask this in your precious name. Amen.

  34. Well, we are finished with the prologue.

  35. Prologue means kind of the introduction.

  36. And the characteristic of John,

  37. it's a little different from some of the other books

  38. that you will find in the Scriptures,

  39. in that John's prologue does something that's atypical.

  40. It lays out for us in the first 18 verses

  41. everything that you're going to find

  42. in the remainder of the book of John.

  43. It gives us, in just little snippets,

  44. all the pieces that later on are going to be expanded

  45. and fleshed out so you can understand them more completely.

  46. I think many of you can remember

  47. when you were in either in high school or whatever,

  48. in college,

  49. and in the first day or two of your class,

  50. the professor or the teacher would come in

  51. and in broad terms kind of tell you,

  52. well, here's what I'm going to teach you

  53. and also talk about,

  54. and here's what I expect from you.

  55. And good students generally pay quite a bit of attention

  56. at the very beginning

  57. because it fleshes out.

  58. You know up front what's coming.

  59. John has finished his introduction.

  60. And actually, as we look at this passage,

  61. we are going to take verse 19 through 28 this morning

  62. and look at this little statement about John the Baptist,

  63. and we understand that really what we're looking at

  64. in one sense is an expansion

  65. of what we found over in verse 7.

  66. Take a minute.

  67. Put your finger on verse 7.

  68. It says, speaking about John the Baptist,

  69. he came as a witness to bear witness about the light

  70. that all might believe through him.

  71. And again, in verse 15, it says,

  72. John bore witness about him and cried out,

  73. this was he of whom I said,

  74. he who comes after me ranks before me

  75. because he was before me.

  76. And so we know, as I pointed out earlier,

  77. that John's introduction kind of gives us all the details,

  78. and then we're going to expand them.

  79. We're going to see them in greater depth

  80. in the weeks and months to come.

  81. And so as we look at this first part,

  82. we're going to find in the verses that we look at today,

  83. John the Apostle is going to explain

  84. John the Baptist, the witness.

  85. And as we get started on this,

  86. one of the things that I want you to know

  87. from the very, very beginning

  88. is what the application is.

  89. Now let me explain what application is.

  90. Obvious, I would think.

  91. But there are two different parts to a sermon in some ways.

  92. There's the exposition,

  93. that means explaining what the text has to say.

  94. And then there is the application.

  95. If you were following or reading one of the Puritans,

  96. you would probably notice that in Puritan preaching,

  97. and I'm not a Puritan, I'm far removed from that

  98. in terms of age, et cetera,

  99. but in Puritan preaching,

  100. there was probably about one-third

  101. that had to do with the exposition of the text.

  102. Here's what God says.

  103. And then there's probably two-thirds of it

  104. that had to do with use.

  105. That's the way they referred to it.

  106. So how do we use this?

  107. What is its application in our lives?

  108. And so I'm going to tell you up front

  109. what the application is.

  110. This morning, as we study the passage of Scripture,

  111. what I want to have happen in your life

  112. is not just understand the historical details

  113. of John the Baptist as the witness.

  114. I want you to be sitting there thinking to yourself,

  115. so how does this fit me?

  116. What should I do if I am going to be faithful

  117. to the calling and appointment that I have received,

  118. very similar to John the Baptist's?

  119. And so as we think about this,

  120. let me begin by making this point

  121. and having it stick in your mind.

  122. We are all witnesses.

  123. Get that clear.

  124. We are all witnesses.

  125. Now, some of you are sitting out there

  126. thinking to yourself,

  127. well, that's not my nature or my temperament.

  128. I'm one of those kind of reserved, cautious persons

  129. who really, if you drop me in the middle

  130. of a large room filled with people,

  131. I would be the person who would naturally gravitate

  132. towards the very distant wall

  133. and pin myself up against there

  134. and just try being quiet.

  135. Now, there are others who, guess what?

  136. You put them on the wall

  137. and guess what they naturally do?

  138. They move towards the center

  139. and they end up,

  140. they know all different kinds of details

  141. about who and what and how and when and where.

  142. The fact of the matter is

  143. is that we are all witnesses.

  144. And as we read what we are going to look at

  145. here in John chapter one,

  146. I think it's very, very important

  147. that we don't get caught up in the historicity

  148. or the historical details of what John did

  149. and miss the fact that

  150. what we are going to discover here

  151. has application in our own lives.

  152. I want you to understand this

  153. and make it clear in your own heart.

  154. Every genuine believer is a witness.

  155. Every genuine believer is a witness.

  156. And I could probably get off

  157. on a little side tangent here

  158. and remind myself of the parable.

  159. Remember, Jesus told the parable

  160. about the talents.

  161. One man received five.

  162. One man received three.

  163. One man received one.

  164. And the one who received one,

  165. what did he do?

  166. He just kind of hit it in the ground.

  167. He didn't do anything with it.

  168. I don't want to go off on a sidebar there,

  169. but I do want to encourage you to recognize

  170. all of us have received all that we need

  171. to be effective in the appointment

  172. that God has given to us.

  173. And so keep it in your mind,

  174. every believer,

  175. I,

  176. you,

  177. we are all witnesses

  178. if we are a genuine believer.

  179. In relationship to that,

  180. it follows,

  181. and it's intelligent,

  182. that you should be sitting out there

  183. saying,

  184. oh yeah,

  185. well can you prove that?

  186. Well,

  187. have just a second

  188. and let's take a look

  189. at a couple different passages

  190. in relationship to that.

  191. You're in John,

  192. and so we're going to play forward

  193. a little bit,

  194. but turn in your Bible

  195. to John chapter 15,

    John 15:16

  196. verse 16.

  197. Jesus is speaking,

  198. and he makes this statement.

  199. He says,

  200. you did not choose me,

  201. but I chose you

  202. and appointed you

  203. that you should go

  204. and bear fruit

  205. and that your fruit

  206. should abide.

  207. He says,

  208. I chose you.

  209. I called you.

  210. I put my hand on you.

  211. The reason that I am

  212. a believer

  213. and that you are a believer

  214. is not because we kind of

  215. in the midst of a moment

  216. of intellectual apprehension

  217. to,

  218. Jesus is a good idea,

  219. I'll give it a shot.

  220. No.

  221. He and his grace called us,

  222. and we,

  223. by his grace,

  224. came to know

  225. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  226. Let me have you look

  227. at another passage

  228. that I think is just

  229. an absolute,

  230. very, very pointed statement

  231. in relationship to this.

  232. Turn your Bible

  233. to John 17,

    John 17:18

  234. verse 18.

  235. John 17,

    John 17:18

  236. verse 18.

  237. It says this,

  238. as you,

  239. remember we're dealing

  240. with the question,

  241. every genuine believer

  242. is a witness.

  243. It's not my personality.

  244. Stop.

  245. Every genuine believer

  246. is a witness.

  247. As you have sent me

  248. into the world,

  249. so I have sent them

  250. into the world.

  251. In my Bible,

  252. I put a little note

  253. for myself

  254. to remind me

  255. of the significance

  256. of this verse,

  257. and that little word,

  258. as.

  259. You don't need to know

  260. all the Greek on it,

  261. but here's what it is saying.

  262. That word, as,

  263. is making this statement

  264. in the same manner

  265. that God the Father

  266. sent Jesus into the world,

  267. I have been sent

  268. to do the same thing

  269. and to accomplish

  270. the same purpose.

  271. I am sent

  272. like Jesus was sent.

  273. And so I want you

  274. to keep that in mind

  275. as you think about that

  276. this morning,

  277. and we come to grips

  278. with the fact

  279. that as we look

  280. at John the Baptist,

  281. it says there

  282. in John chapter 1,

    John 1:19

  283. verse 19,

  284. and this is the testimony

  285. of John

  286. when the Jews

  287. sent priests

  288. and Levites

  289. from Jerusalem

  290. to ask him,

  291. who are you?

  292. It is evident

  293. that what he had been doing

  294. is witnessing.

  295. I want you to recognize

  296. I had an interesting

  297. conversation not too long ago

  298. with an individual

  299. who was,

  300. we were discussing

  301. the matter of

  302. the evangelical church today

  303. being involved

  304. in witnessing.

  305. And as a broad term,

  306. we'd have to say

  307. that there are

  308. far more people

  309. that profess

  310. to be evangelical,

  311. to be orthodox

  312. in their thinking,

  313. to care a lot

  314. about Jesus,

  315. but the truth

  316. of the matter

  317. is that it has been

  318. weeks,

  319. it's been months,

  320. it's been years

  321. since they really

  322. have shared their faith

  323. about the Lord Jesus Christ

  324. with anybody.

  325. And we were having

  326. a conversation

  327. and the issue came up,

  328. why is it that

  329. more people don't share

  330. about Jesus?

  331. Do you know what

  332. one of the natural

  333. and normal answers is?

  334. Is they lack information.

  335. Did you hear that?

  336. And one of the things

  337. that goes along with that

  338. is so that many,

  339. many churches

  340. are involved

  341. in regular instruction

  342. in how to share

  343. the gospel.

  344. And that's important.

  345. But are you tracking me?

  346. I don't think the problem

  347. is the lack of information.

  348. And the reason

  349. I would say that

  350. is let me give you

  351. a couple examples of it.

  352. Remember the woman

  353. at the well?

  354. Remember that?

  355. John chapter 4,

    John 4 chapter mention

  356. there's the Samaritan woman

  357. and she's at the well

  358. and Jesus comes to her

  359. and he says,

  360. give me a drink of water

  361. and she says,

  362. blah, blah, blah, blah,

  363. you know,

  364. and all that ends up,

  365. she is convicted

  366. of her sin

  367. and once she's convicted

  368. of her sin,

  369. she then takes

  370. a basic course in EE

  371. before she goes into town.

  372. Is that what happened?

  373. She scampers into town

  374. and she says,

  375. come meet the man.

  376. And everybody shows up

  377. to hear,

  378. what is this?

  379. Let me give you another one.

  380. I like this one too.

  381. You remember the man

  382. who was born blind?

  383. You remember that story?

  384. And there is the Sanhedrin,

  385. all the Jews are kind of,

  386. tell us about this man

  387. and he cuts down to the chase.

  388. He says,

  389. you know,

  390. who he is,

  391. I don't know

  392. but I will tell you what,

  393. I was blind

  394. and now I see.

  395. You got that?

  396. The best one.

  397. A low,

  398. trained,

  399. evangelistic,

  400. impact person.

  401. And I think you ought

  402. to look at it

  403. because it's a good one.

  404. Luke chapter 8,

    Luke 8:39

  405. verse 39.

  406. Luke chapter 8.

    Luke 8 chapter mention

  407. Here's my argument.

  408. You don't need more information.

  409. You need something

  410. to happen to your heart.

  411. Luke chapter 7

    Luke 7 chapter mention

  412. is all about the demoniac.

  413. Do you follow that?

  414. The demoniac

  415. is the one

  416. who Jesus delivered

  417. from all those demons

  418. and after,

  419. I love it,

  420. when the townspeople

  421. come out

  422. to find out

  423. what had happened

  424. to their pigs

  425. and they found

  426. the demoniac

  427. sitting clothed

  428. and in his right mind.

  429. It's one of my favorite

  430. little lines in the Bible.

  431. Clothed and in your right mind.

  432. You know,

  433. it's like,

  434. ah,

  435. this guy had been

  436. radically transformed

  437. by the power of Christ.

  438. And there he is

  439. sitting,

  440. clothed and in his right mind

  441. and the neighbors

  442. all show up

  443. and say,

  444. Jesus,

  445. would you please leave?

  446. I mean,

  447. they were scared to death

  448. at the power

  449. of Christ

  450. to transform lives.

  451. They said,

  452. would you leave,

  453. please?

  454. And Jesus does.

  455. But then the man says,

  456. hey,

  457. can I come with you?

  458. Can I come with you?

  459. Does anybody remember

  460. what Jesus said to him?

  461. Verse 39,

  462. no,

  463. no,

  464. no.

  465. Why don't you go into town

  466. and tell him

  467. what great things

  468. I've done for you?

  469. How many weeks

  470. of evangelistic training

  471. do you think he had

  472. before he scampered

  473. on back to town

  474. where he had been

  475. an absolute,

  476. disgusting,

  477. revolting individual

  478. and he begins

  479. talking about

  480. Jesus

  481. who could change life?

  482. Everybody smile at me.

  483. so you know

  484. I'm talking to you.

  485. Everybody look.

  486. The thing that brings

  487. deficiency

  488. to witnessing

  489. is not a lack

  490. of information.

  491. It is a lack

  492. of confidence

  493. in the transforming

  494. power of Christ

  495. that can take us

  496. from being

  497. the miserable,

  498. unhappy,

  499. unforgiving,

  500. just miserable people

  501. and we can turn

  502. our lives inside out

  503. and we can say

  504. to other people,

  505. come see the man

  506. who did this to me.

  507. Do you follow that?

  508. Hey,

  509. you're not going to witness

  510. when you're all

  511. scuzzed up about

  512. who you are

  513. or who other people are,

  514. you know,

  515. but when you get

  516. locked up on who Jesus is,

  517. guess what happens?

  518. naturally.

  519. You don't need

  520. more education.

  521. You need to have

  522. a fresh touch

  523. of who Jesus is.

  524. Amen?

  525. Amen.

  526. Most of our failures

  527. to witness

  528. for Christ

  529. can really be

  530. tracked back

  531. to where our hearts are.

  532. You know what?

  533. people

  534. always

  535. witness.

  536. The sad thing is

  537. a lot of their witnesses

  538. are about

  539. themselves,

  540. their own

  541. interests,

  542. their own

  543. affections,

  544. their own

  545. petty issues,

  546. and not about

  547. Jesus.

  548. And as we study

  549. the scriptures

  550. this morning,

  551. what my

  552. prayer has been

  553. is that we

  554. who know Christ

  555. would get rid

  556. of some of this

  557. stupidity

  558. about ourselves

  559. and we would be

  560. locked in

  561. to the glory

  562. and the supremacy

  563. of Christ

  564. and he

  565. would dominate,

  566. dominate

  567. our affections

  568. because when

  569. he dominates

  570. our affections,

  571. he will

  572. control

  573. our

  574. conversations.

  575. Well,

  576. let's learn

  577. about John.

  578. And as we

  579. learn about John,

  580. let's learn

  581. about witnessing.

  582. In principle,

  583. what we're going

  584. to find

  585. in verses

  586. 19

  587. on down

  588. through

  589. to verse

  590. 24

  591. is that

  592. a witness

  593. is not

  594. self-focused.

  595. A witness

  596. is not

  597. self-focused.

  598. We find

  599. there in

  600. John

  601. 1.19

  602. that

  603. after John

  604. began his

  605. public ministry,

  606. he really

  607. did rattle

  608. the cages

  609. in Jerusalem

  610. and the

  611. Sanhedrin.

  612. Now,

  613. the Sanhedrin

  614. were the

  615. 70 men

  616. that were

  617. kind of

  618. responsible

  619. for the

  620. leadership

  621. and the

  622. decision-making

  623. in the

  624. nation of

  625. Israel

  626. and when

  627. they heard

  628. that John

  629. the Baptist

  630. was preaching,

  631. after a period

  632. of time,

  633. he really

  634. began to

  635. have an

  636. impact

  637. and so

  638. they sent

  639. a delegation

  640. down to

  641. kind of

  642. do a little

  643. bit of

  644. study.

  645. Who are

  646. you?

  647. That was

  648. their first

  649. question.

  650. Who are

  651. you?

  652. It's

  653. implied

  654. that they

  655. thought he

  656. might be

  657. the Christ,

  658. but there

  659. in verse

  660. 19,

  661. and this

  662. is a

  663. testimony

  664. of John

  665. when the

  666. Jews sent

  667. priests

  668. and Levites

  669. from

  670. Jerusalem

  671. to ask

  672. him,

  673. who are

  674. you?

  675. This is

  676. a formal

  677. delegation,

  678. do you

  679. follow that?

  680. on a

  681. fact-finding

  682. mission.

  683. Here's

  684. John the

  685. Baptist

  686. preaching

  687. without

  688. official

  689. recognition,

  690. and so

  691. they send

  692. an official

  693. delegation

  694. and they

  695. say,

  696. hey,

  697. who are

  698. you?

  699. Now let me

  700. have you

  701. think with

  702. me just a

  703. little bit

  704. about the

  705. significance

  706. of John

  707. the Baptist

  708. and his

  709. ministry.

  710. Understand

  711. that for

  712. 400 years,

  713. the nation

  714. of Israel

  715. had heard

  716. no preaching

  717. prophet.

  718. That's

  719. pretty

  720. significant.

  721. When

  722. Malachi

  723. finished

  724. his

  725. revelation,

  726. the nation

  727. of Israel

  728. did not

  729. enjoy

  730. another

  731. preaching

  732. prophet

  733. for 400

  734. years.

  735. That is

  736. very

  737. significant

  738. to a

  739. people

  740. who had

  741. one after

  742. another

  743. received

  744. a prophet

  745. who would

  746. come.

  747. Now by

  748. the way,

  749. I want

  750. you to

  751. understand

  752. that every

  753. time a

  754. prophet

  755. showed up,

  756. the people

  757. weren't

  758. going,

  759. woohoo,

  760. we need

  761. this message.

  762. That's not

  763. the way it

  764. usually went,

  765. but they

  766. still respected

  767. the fact God

  768. was communicating

  769. to them.

  770. 400 years

  771. of silence.

  772. And then

  773. out of the

  774. wilderness

  775. comes this

  776. guy,

  777. not endorsed

  778. by the priests

  779. in Jerusalem.

  780. He didn't

  781. have any

  782. neatly printed

  783. brochures

  784. that explained

  785. how wonderful

  786. his ministry

  787. was.

  788. He didn't

  789. even dress

  790. sharply.

  791. Do you

  792. understand

  793. that?

  794. He came

  795. out in

  796. camel's hair.

  797. Now that

  798. was the

  799. blue jeans

  800. of the

  801. day.

  802. Do you

  803. follow that?

  804. I'm not

  805. doing blue

  806. jeans this

  807. morning,

  808. but do

  809. understand

  810. this.

  811. I mean,

  812. the thing I

  813. want you to

  814. remember about

  815. a man who

  816. stands behind

  817. the pulpit

  818. is not what

  819. tie he wears,

  820. but whether

  821. or not he

  822. speaks with

  823. the authority

  824. of the

  825. word of

  826. God and

  827. the power

  828. of the

  829. spirit.

  830. spirit.

  831. And here

  832. was John

  833. the Baptist

  834. who walked

  835. out, and

  836. what were the

  837. scribes and

  838. Pharisees all

  839. about?

  840. Do you

  841. remember how

  842. they dressed?

  843. Oh, they

  844. were, I

  845. mean, hey, you

  846. could see a

  847. scribe and

  848. Pharisee and

  849. kind of know

  850. about their

  851. holiness by the

  852. way they

  853. dressed.

  854. You know,

  855. they were

  856. really, they

  857. were into

  858. style, and

  859. you know, oh,

  860. you've got the

  861. big robe, and

  862. you've got the

  863. blue, and

  864. you've got the

  865. bells, and you

  866. are really

  867. hot, you

  868. know, and

  869. here is John

  870. the Baptist

  871. kind of strides

  872. out there, blue

  873. jeans and

  874. dungarees, and

  875. he's saying, hey,

  876. you guys need to

  877. buck up because

  878. Jesus is coming.

  879. Well, I want

  880. you to understand

  881. something.

  882. When this

  883. spirit-enabled

  884. preacher, John

  885. the Baptist,

  886. strode in

  887. down to the

  888. wilderness, he

  889. blew the doors

  890. off the shallow

  891. religion of the

  892. day.

  893. Turn back, if

  894. you will, just

  895. for a moment to

  896. Luke chapter, well,

  897. you've got to

  898. turn back, that's

  899. right, go back.

  900. Luke chapter 1,

    Luke 1:15–17

  901. verse 15 through

  902. 17.

  903. Do not miss

  904. the fact that

  905. John the Baptist's

  906. ministry was one

  907. that was

  908. characterized by

  909. the work of the

  910. spirit of God.

  911. Luke chapter 1,

    Luke 1:15–17

  912. verse 15 through

  913. 17.

  914. Here is the

  915. Holy Spirit

  916. speaking to

  917. Zechariah

  918. regarding his

  919. son.

  920. He says,

  921. for he will be

  922. great before the

  923. Lord, and he

  924. must not drink

  925. wine or strong

  926. drink, and he

  927. will be filled

  928. with the Holy

  929. Spirit even from

  930. his mother's

  931. womb, and he

  932. will turn many of

  933. the children of

  934. Israel to the

  935. Lord their God.

  936. And he will go

  937. before him in the

  938. spirit and the

  939. power of Elijah.

  940. And so what you

  941. understand is that

  942. here is someone

  943. who came onto

  944. the scene in

  945. Jerusalem and in

  946. the nation of

  947. Israel.

  948. And by the way,

  949. listen to me

  950. carefully.

  951. John the Baptist

  952. never did a

  953. single miracle.

  954. Israel.

  955. Hmm?

  956. And yet, he

  957. turned the nation

  958. upside down.

  959. Do you know how he

  960. did that?

  961. By preaching in the

  962. power of the Spirit

  963. of God that brought

  964. conviction to the

  965. hearts of broken-hearted,

  966. miserable sinners.

  967. sinners.

  968. I want you to

  969. understand something

  970. about John.

  971. He was not caught

  972. up in self.

  973. Verse 19, who are

  974. you?

  975. The fact that they

  976. had to ask him

  977. sequential questions

  978. indicates that he

  979. didn't launch into,

  980. well, let me give you

  981. my business card, and

  982. here are all the

  983. details about who I

  984. am and how important

  985. I am.

  986. Do you follow that?

  987. They had to keep on

  988. prodding, who are

  989. you?

  990. Look at the

  991. questions.

  992. Verse 20, he

  993. confessed and did

  994. not deny, but

  995. confessed, I'm not

  996. the Christ.

  997. I mean, that was a

  998. logical question that

  999. they were asking.

  1000. Here, after having

  1001. had all this insipid,

  1002. worthless preaching

  1003. that was

  1004. characterized, or

  1005. characterized the

  1006. preaching of the

  1007. scribes and

  1008. Pharisees.

1009. If you ever want to

  1010. have a little

  1011. interesting discussion

  1012. on what

  1013. Pharisaical preaching

  1014. was like, just read

  1015. Alfred Edersheim,

  1016. Life and Times of

  1017. Jesus Messiah.

  1018. I mean, hey,

  1019. trying to think, who

  1020. was the crystal

  1021. cathedral?

  1022. I mean, not who

  1023. was, who preached in

  1024. the crystal, let's

  1025. try this.

1026. If you want to know

  1027. what the ancient

  1028. Pharisees preached

  1029. like, you can try

  1030. Joel Osteen.

  1031. Okay?

1032. I mean, it was all

  1033. about feeling good

  1034. about yourself and

  1035. all about, you know,

  1036. well, you've got to

1037. do the right kind of

  1038. things, and you've

1039. got to be, but you

  1040. know what?

  1041. God's all for you.

  1042. And here is John

  1043. the Baptist came

  1044. thundering out,

  1045. clothed in blue

  1046. jeans, and he says,

1047. hey, you guys are in

  1048. trouble.

  1049. Paul.

  1050. And John was

  1051. asked, are you the

  1052. Christ?

  1053. No?

  1054. No?

  1055. Well, okay, are you

  1056. Elijah?

  1057. And the reason they

  1058. were asking him that

  1059. is because if you

  1060. return your Bible, you

  1061. don't need to this

  1062. morning, but in

  1063. Malachi chapter 4,

  1064. verse 7, the last

  1065. thing that Malachi had

1066. to say is that before

  1067. the great and terrible

  1068. day of the Lord,

  1069. Elijah's going to

  1070. come, and what he's

1071. going to do is his

  1072. preaching is going to

  1073. turn the hearts of

  1074. fathers back towards

  1075. their children and the

  1076. hearts of children back

  1077. towards their fathers.

  1078. Stop.

  1079. Do you know what

  1080. that's saying?

  1081. Everybody smile.

  1082. It's saying that

  1083. genuine conviction

  1084. touches on the

  1085. closest relationships

  1086. we have.

  1087. Huh?

  1088. Everybody said,

  1089. yeah, that's right.

1090. If God is really at

  1091. work in your heart,

  1092. those who are

  1093. closest know.

  1094. You can be really

  1095. sweet in the lobby,

1096. but your kids know if

  1097. you're a skunk at

  1098. home.

  1099. And here is what

  1100. Malachi said.

  1101. He said,

  1102. when revival

  1103. comes under the

  1104. ministry of the

  1105. prophet Elijah,

  1106. it's going to get

  1107. a hold of those

  1108. close relationships.

  1109. A revival that does

  1110. not reconcile

  1111. the closest of

  1112. relationships really

  1113. has no spiritual

  1114. zing.

  1115. People that are

  1116. persistently

  1117. bristly,

  1118. that are upset

  1119. with one another

  1120. spiritually,

  1121. are really not in

  1122. tune at all.

1123. I want you to turn

  1124. just for a moment.

1125. Let's kind of go on

  1126. a sidebar here for a

  1127. second.

  1128. Just go over to

  1129. James chapter 3,

    James 3:14–18

  1130. verse 14 through 18.

  1131. Here's what I want

  1132. you to do.

  1133. Everybody look at me,

  1134. brother.

  1135. Underline this and

  1136. show it to your

  1137. wife.

  1138. Do you follow that?

  1139. Now, what does that

  1140. really mean?

  1141. It means take it

  1142. personally, don't apply

  1143. it to somebody else.

1144. Let me read it to

  1145. you.

  1146. But if you have

  1147. bitter jealousy and

  1148. selfish ambition in

  1149. your hearts, do not

  1150. boast and be false

  1151. about the truth.

  1152. I'm not there, is

  1153. what this is saying.

  1154. This is not the

  1155. wisdom that comes

  1156. from above, but is

  1157. earthly, unspiritual.

  1158. Now, nail the next

  1159. one.

  1160. Demoniacal.

  1161. Well, I'm having a

  1162. little bit of an

  1163. attitude, but you

  1164. know what?

  1165. It's well-deserved

  1166. because the people I

  1167. deal with are just

  1168. absolutely fruit

  1169. cakes.

  1170. No.

  1171. This is a problem

  1172. you have.

  1173. Well, let's keep

  1174. going.

  1175. For where jealousy

  1176. and selfish ambition

  1177. exist, there will be

  1178. disorder and every

  1179. evil practice.

  1180. For the wisdom

  1181. from above is

  1182. first pure, then

  1183. peaceable, gentle,

  1184. open to reason, full

  1185. of mercy and good

  1186. fruits, impartial and

  1187. sincere.

  1188. And the harvest of

  1189. righteousness is

  1190. sown in peace by

  1191. those who make

  1192. peace.

  1193. people came to

  1194. John and said, Who

  1195. are you?

  1196. I'm not the

  1197. Christ.

  1198. I'm not Elijah.

  1199. Well, are you the

  1200. prophet?

1201. Incidentally, and because of time, we're not going to get there,

1202. but that question, the prophet, is really a reference to Christ.

  1203. In Deuteronomy chapter 18, verse 15 through 18,

    Deuteronomy 18:15–18

1204. there Moses speaks of the fact that the day would come

1205. when there would be the prophet who would arrive.

  1206. You're listening to him.

1207. What it's saying is that God would send his son

1208. who would be the complete and full revelation of the truth.

1209. They didn't connect the messianic role and office of Christ into that,

1210. but they said, are you the prophet?

  1211. No, I'm not.

1212. I love what John has to say about himself, though.

1213. Look, if you would, there at John chapter 1, verse 22.

    John 1:22

1214. So they said to him, who are you?

1215. We do need to give an answer.

1216. I mean, you know, we were sent as a delegation,

1217. and we've got to give some kind of answer to people

1218. when we show back up in the office.

  1219. Who are you?

  1220. I'm nobody.

1221. I'm just the voice of one crying out in the wilderness,

1222. make straight the way of the Lord.

1223. So let me ask you a question.

1224. How faithful are you at being the witness

1225. you've been divinely appointed to be?

  1226. Hmm?

  1227. How faithful are you?

1228. Well, let's come to a second characteristic

1229. and try to wrap this up.

1230. First is a faithful witness is not self-focused.

  1231. All about Jesus.

1232. Second, a faithful witness really is convicting.

  1233. Convicting.

1234. And we understand that because immediately after him saying,

  1235. well, I'm nobody special,

1236. then what we find there in verse 25,

1237. they say, well, then why are you baptizing?

1238. Well, what are you doing baptizing people

1239. if you're not anybody special?

1240. At the heart of the question that was being asked to John

1241. was, okay, if you're not special,

1242. why are you calling people to repentance

1243. and working as you are to indict people of sin?

1244. I want you to understand here,

1245. if you have friends that are into sprinkling

1246. or whatever else as a mode of baptism,

1247. I do want you to understand that underlying this question

1248. that was being asked in John

1249. is a very clear indication that baptism

1250. in the Jewish culture in which John stepped

  1251. was one of immersion.

1252. The word baptism, actually baptizo,

1253. in the Greek means to immerse.

1254. How many of you know

1255. that the Jews baptize all the time?

1256. Raise your hands if you know that the Jews,

1257. Joe Holloway, we have one who knows

1258. that Jews baptize all the time.

1259. And I went online Friday

1260. and I checked out where I could have

1261. a Jewish baptism here in town.

  1262. It's called a mikvah.

1263. And mikvahs are, in fact, you can,

1264. go ahead, you can Google it when you get home.

  1265. Jewish baptism.

1266. Where can I be baptized here in town?

  1267. And there's a website.

  1268. There's an email address.

  1269. And there's a scheduling system

1270. where I can schedule to have a mikvah.

  1271. That, and the word,

1272. it's talking about entire immersion.

  1273. Immersion.

1274. Do you know what immersion means?

  1275. All wet.

  1276. 100%.

1277. In fact, as a pastor,

1278. you know, when I'm involved in baptism,

1279. I want to be sure that they're down.

  1280. Okay.

  1281. All wet.

1282. It was a regular part of ancient Judaism.

  1283. baptism.

1284. And it was part of,

1285. A, any Gentile who wanted to become

1286. a Jewish convert had to be,

1287. one, if he was male, circumcised.

  1288. Two, baptized.

  1289. Three, sacrifice.

  1290. Okay.

1291. And so baptism was just woven in

1292. to part of becoming a believer,

  1293. a Jewish convert.

1294. But there were other kinds of baptisms

  1295. that took place

1296. that had to do in particular

1297. with a desire of purifying your heart

1298. from just all the nasty scuzzies

1299. of the sinfulness of life.

  1300. Do you follow that?

  1301. And so periodically,

  1302. you know,

  1303. good,

  1304. sincere Jews

  1305. would go get mikvahed.

1306. And here was John the Baptist.

  1307. He had no endorsement.

  1308. Well, right,

1309. do you have to baptize people?

  1310. Were you,

1311. were you a graduate of,

  1312. you know,

  1313. Jerusalem Academy

  1314. and baptismal skills?

  1315. No.

1316. I never took any of those classes.

1317. Have you been endorsed by the Senate?

  1318. No.

  1319. I haven't had that either.

  1320. Why are you baptizing?

  1321. On top of that,

1322. if there was anybody in Israel

1323. that should have been involved

1324. in convicting people of sin,

1325. it should have been the,

  1326. guess what?

1327. The professional religious people, right?

  1328. Scribes, Pharisees,

  1329. the Levites,

  1330. the priests,

1331. you guys are having a problem with sin.

1332. It's time to take care of it.

1333. And nobody was doing that in Israel.

1334. And along comes John the Baptist

1335. and he rings the bell

  1336. and he says,

1337. you guys are just a pack of sinners

1338. and the king is coming

1339. and when he shows up,

1340. you guys are in a heap of trouble.

  1341. And actually,

  1342. there were people

  1343. that believed his preaching.

  1344. You got that?

  1345. They started flocking

1346. to where they could be baptized

  1347. for repentance.

  1348. Over Mark chapter 1 verse 4,

    Mark 1:4

  1349. we see this reference

1350. to the fact that baptism

1351. had to do with repentance.

1352. And so here come these people

  1353. from Jerusalem,

  1354. from the Sanhedrin saying,

  1355. all right,

1356. you need to understand this.

1357. So you're not the Messiah.

  1358. No, no, no.

  1359. You're not.

  1360. And you're not Elijah.

1361. And you're not the prophet.

1362. Well, why are you convicted?

  1363. I mean,

1364. what right do you have

  1365. to convict people

  1366. of being sinners?

  1367. And by the way,

1368. do you know what sin kind of was

1369. in the Jewish culture of the day?

1370. It was dragging a chair

  1371. on the Sabbath.

1372. Those really important things, right?

  1373. Remember what Jesus said?

1374. You guys tithe on the mint

  1375. and the anise

1376. and you have completely collected

  1377. the more weighty matters

  1378. of the law.

1379. And so they come stomping out

  1380. to John the Baptist

  1381. and say,

1382. well, what are you doing?

  1383. Well, quite evidently,

  1384. what was at work

1385. is as John the Baptist

  1386. was preaching,

1387. the Spirit was at work

  1388. convicting many

  1389. of their sinful hearts

  1390. and the judgment

  1391. that they had

  1392. to face under God.

  1393. The fact that people

  1394. came to be baptized

  1395. indicates that John's preaching

  1396. identified sin

  1397. and called people

  1398. to repent of it.

1399. If you have any question

  1400. about that,

1401. you can turn in your Bible

  1402. for your own study

  1403. and Liberty,

1404. go to Luke chapter 3

    Luke 3 chapter mention

  1405. and remember

  1406. when John the Baptist

  1407. is preaching

  1408. and he doesn't say,

1409. well, I am so glad

1410. all of you showed up here today

1411. to listen to my little talk

  1412. about how you ought

1413. to feel better for yourself.

  1414. Remember what he says?

  1415. How many remember that?

  1416. He just blasted them.

  1417. He says,

  1418. you know,

  1419. the axe is laid

1420. to the root of the tree.

  1421. You know,

  1422. what are you doing,

1423. you snakes in the grass

  1424. kind of thing?

  1425. He says,

  1426. bring forth fruit

  1427. worthy of repentance.

1428. And then the soldiers said,

1429. well, what should we do?

  1430. And the others said,

1431. well, what should we do?

  1432. And he laid out

  1433. what genuine repentance

  1434. looked like.

1435. I do want you to understand

  1436. that not everybody

  1437. who heard John preach

  1438. believed John

  1439. or was baptized.

1440. How do I know that?

  1441. Track with me.

  1442. This is important.

  1443. Matthew chapter 21,

    Matthew 21:25

  1444. verse 25.

  1445. Jesus,

  1446. he has now finished

  1447. cleaning the temple.

  1448. Remember cleaning the temple?

  1449. One man

  1450. walking in,

1451. just kind of imagine this,

1452. walking into the White House

1453. and turning it upside down.

1454. That takes some kind of power.

1455. And all they could do

1456. is come up to him.

  1457. Well,

1458. what right do you have

  1459. to do this?

  1460. I mean,

1461. that's what they were asking him.

  1462. He says,

  1463. well, hey,

  1464. I got a question for you.

  1465. What is it?

  1466. Well,

  1467. hmm,

  1468. yeah,

  1469. here it is,

  1470. here it is.

1471. It was John the Baptist

  1472. baptism from man

  1473. or from heaven?

  1474. And they're sitting there

  1475. thinking,

  1476. well,

1477. if we say it was from man,

1478. we're going to get stoned

1479. because a lot of the people

  1480. around us think that

  1481. John really was

  1482. a messenger from God,

1483. so we don't want to see that.

  1484. Well,

  1485. but if we say

  1486. it was from heaven,

1487. then Jesus is going to say,

1488. and then why weren't you

  1489. repentant and baptized?

  1490. Do you follow that?

1491. Had him on the hook.

  1492. It's quite evident

  1493. that the Pharisees,

  1494. the scribes,

  1495. the Levites,

  1496. the priests,

1497. these guys didn't buy in at all

1498. to what John was selling.

  1499. You see,

  1500. in their idea,

  1501. their religion

  1502. really consisted

  1503. of superficial things,

  1504. of showing up

  1505. and doing up

  1506. and whatever else,

1507. but it really didn't have to do

1508. with anything but the heart.

  1509. John the Baptist

  1510. came along and said,

  1511. hey, listen,

1512. the King of Kings is coming,

  1513. and it's time

  1514. for you to repent.

  1515. Now,

  1516. I want to explain

  1517. something about

  1518. John the Baptist's

  1519. baptism,

  1520. just for a moment.

  1521. John the Baptist's

  1522. baptism

  1523. was not a baptism

  1524. to salvation.

  1525. It was a baptism

  1526. that was,

  1527. in some sense,

  1528. a public recognition

  1529. of the lostness

  1530. of their condition

  1531. and their desperate

  1532. recognition

  1533. of their state.

  1534. Broad terms.

  1535. John the Baptist,

  1536. when he was explaining

  1537. this matter,

  1538. he says,

  1539. hey, listen,

  1540. I baptize you

  1541. with water,

  1542. but there is one

  1543. coming after me

  1544. that will baptize you

  1545. with the Spirit.

  1546. Oh,

  1547. I like that.

  1548. Do you know why?

  1549. Because,

  1550. not by might,

  1551. nor by spirit,

  1552. nor by power,

  1553. but by my spirit,

  1554. saith the Lord.

  1555. One of the things

  1556. that Scripture makes clear

  1557. is that there's nothing

  1558. I can do

1559. to the outside of me

  1560. or even to,

  1561. well,

  1562. let's think five positive

  1563. thoughts in a row,

1564. and maybe I'll be spiritual.

  1565. You know,

  1566. it doesn't work.

1567. It has to be the Spirit

  1568. of God that transforms

1569. our life through the power

  1570. of the cross.

  1571. Isn't that right?

1572. And here is John saying,

  1573. there's someone

  1574. coming after me

1575. that is going to make

  1576. all the difference

  1577. in the world.

1578. He is the only one

  1579. who can save you

  1580. from the desperation

  1581. of your sin.

  1582. Let me come back.

  1583. As John came out

  1584. of the wilderness,

  1585. his message was not

  1586. about himself.

  1587. His message was convicting.

  1588. And he summarized it

  1589. by saying this

  1590. as we find there

  1591. in verse 23,

  1592. make straight

  1593. the way

  1594. of the Lord.

  1595. Being a faithful witness,

  1596. I don't want you

  1597. to miss this.

  1598. Being a faithful witness

  1599. takes living the truth

1600. and then saying the truth.

1601. I want you to write

  1602. that down somewhere.

  1603. Because you know what?

  1604. My prayer this last

  1605. couple weeks

  1606. has been this.

1607. I have had the privilege

  1608. of being away

  1609. for vacation

1610. and I got to tell you,

  1611. I come back

1612. and I look on your faces

  1613. and you are people

  1614. that I love,

  1615. I care about.

  1616. And I want you

  1617. to know the fullness

  1618. of joy that comes

  1619. with being

  1620. all that God

1621. has called you to be.

  1622. Do you understand that?

1623. And you can't be that

  1624. when you're consumed

  1625. with yourself.

  1626. You can't be.

1627. To be in a spitting match

  1628. with God

  1629. is just profoundly stupid,

  1630. right?

  1631. And He is bent

  1632. on helping you

  1633. grow to be faithful

  1634. as a witness

  1635. to His glory.

1636. It takes living the truth

1637. and then saying the truth.

1638. So let me put this together

  1639. in closing.

1640. There are some of you

  1641. here today

1642. that do not know Christ.

1643. And John the Baptist's message

  1644. from 2,000 years ago

  1645. is applicable.

  1646. Make straight

1647. the way of the Lord.

  1648. The day is coming

1649. when the Lord Jesus Christ

  1650. who is the Savior

  1651. of the world

  1652. will also be

1653. the judge of the world

  1654. and He is going

  1655. to call you

  1656. to a task

  1657. and to accounting

1658. and if you are standing

  1659. there before Him

1660. and you are not clothed

  1661. in His righteousness

1662. and you are not clothed

  1663. in His finished work

  1664. on the cross

  1665. and you hope

1666. to lift up to Him

  1667. the miserable pittance

  1668. that your life is,

  1669. you will not endure.

1670. And one of the purposes

  1671. of preaching

  1672. is to bring you

  1673. who are here today

  1674. that desperately need

  1675. the Lord Jesus Christ

  1676. to the point

  1677. of confessing,

  1678. I am a sinner

  1679. who stands justly condemned

  1680. before a holy God

1681. and I need His help.

1682. And there's some of you

  1683. here today

  1684. that know Christ.

  1685. And truthfully,

  1686. you're a heartbeat away

1687. from being in His presence.

  1688. Do you understand that?

  1689. We're all a heartbeat away.

1690. But you are living a life

  1691. that is distant

  1692. to that divine

  1693. and holy purpose

1694. for which He redeemed you.

1695. How do I know that?

  1696. I've been there.

  1697. I don't want to ever

  1698. be there again.

  1699. I've called you,

  1700. He says,

  1701. to be my witness.

  1702. You cannot be bent

  1703. on yourself

1704. and bent on Jesus too.

1705. And if you are going to

  1706. see His glory

  1707. in your life,

  1708. it will take

  1709. humility

  1710. and repentance

1711. and a pleading with Him

  1712. to change the way

  1713. you think.

  1714. Let's close in prayer.

  1715. Father God,

  1716. this morning,

  1717. I am mindful

  1718. that the purpose

  1719. of preaching

  1720. is to bring

  1721. Your glorious people

  1722. to the place

1723. of saying yes or no

  1724. to the Holy Spirit.

  1725. You've called us

  1726. to be witnesses.

  1727. We do not want

  1728. to play

  1729. with so awesome,

  1730. so majestic

  1731. an appointment.

  1732. We're frail,

  1733. easily distracted,

  1734. often discouraged.

  1735. And yet,

  1736. we have been given

  1737. the gift

  1738. of salvation

  1739. and the enabling

1740. of the Spirit of God.

  1741. So help us

  1742. in our divine call.

  1743. We ask this

  1744. in Jesus' name.

  1745. Amen.
