  1. I'm asking this, how many of you realize that we actually just sang a prayer?

  2. ! Let me follow that up with another question.

  3. ! How many of you have an idea of who will answer our prayer?

  4. ! Now, I'm asking a theological question in reference to the triune God.

  5. Do you follow that?

  6. I mean, in general, it's a little bit like Sunday school.

  7. You could say God, and you could strike it right.

  8. I'd have to give you points for that.

  9. But more specifically, who of the triune Godhead is responsible for answering that particular prayer?

  10. Help me out here.

  11. The Holy Spirit.

  12. That's right.

  13. Holy Spirit.

  14. And by the way, if the Lord tarries and I live long enough and you're here long enough,

  15. we will eventually get to John chapter 14, 15, and 16,

    John 14 chapter mention

  16. and we are going to find the most extensive instruction on the ministry of the Holy Spirit there.

  17. That's just going to be, it's going to be wonderful.

  18. It's going to be as good as Ephesians.

  19. Maybe even better because it's next.

  20. You know how I am about books, right?

  21. The one I'm preaching in at the moment has got to be the best book there is.

  22. And I suppose that comes from the process of praying and studying through the week.

  23. And so often as I am coming to the conclusion of that process.

  24. And for some of you, you may know that generally on Thursday I have the text written, finished, the text part.

  25. And Connie then puts together the things that go on the overhead.

  26. And then from Thursday till Sunday about this time is a time that is bathed in prayer.

  27. You know, I want the help of the Holy Spirit to preach the Word.

  28. And I rely on your prayers as well.

  29. And one of the things is that when I finish up Thursday, I am just full.

  30. I mean, it's like I am ready.

  31. If I could preach Thursday afternoon, it would probably be best for me.

  32. Because I carry around this, oh, man, I want to bring it.

  33. But, you know, it's like, oh, okay.

  34. This is Friday.

  35. And Judith, my bride of 44 years, has advised me on many occasions that I'm not allowed to preach to her ahead of time.

  36. And I said, I was talking with another brother in the Lord.

  37. And he was talking to me about what he does as he preaches his sermon to his wife several times in advance.

  38. I said, God bless you.

  39. I wish.

  40. So you get to hear it hot the first time.

  41. Here it is.

  42. I want you, as we kind of get our hearts into this passage, to put your finger, first of all, on John 1, verse 35.

    John 1:35

  43. That's where we're going to be.

  44. We're going to take time together going over all of this passage from 35 to 52.

  45. But in order to kind of have the global view, because it helps us keep things together,

  46. I want to remind you why John wrote the book.

  47. How many of you know why John wrote the book?

  48. It tells us over in John chapter 20, it says, in essence, that these things are written,

    John 20 chapter mention

  49. the pieces that have been put together are written, so that you might know who Jesus is,

  50. that he is the Son of God, and that knowing you can believe in him.

  51. And so here we are, as we kind of get into the process of understanding this book,

  52. we remind ourselves, for one, that John wrote this to inform us of the truth that Jesus is the Son of God,

  53. and that knowing this, we can believe on him and have eternal life.

  54. Well, let me do something here that is not going to give you an excuse to leave the service early,

  55. but I do want you to kind of have some abbreviated ideas of what the book is about.

  56. So someone comes up to you and says, the book by Dostoevsky on war and peace, what's it about?

  57. Do you know what you could actually say?

  58. It's about war and peace.

  59. Now, that's a gross abbreviation of a book about 800 pages.

  60. So when we get to the book of John, we want to understand, what's this book about?

  61. I've got to tell you, it's about worship and witness.

  62. Worship and witness.

  63. Think about that.

  64. Worship and witness.

  65. The two pieces go together.

  66. Another way of putting it would be edification and evangelism.

  67. Now, there's a similarity, isn't it?

  68. Worship, witness, edification, evangelism.

  69. And as we look this morning at this extended passage,

  70. we are going to see how these pieces actually come together.

  71. And so I would put it this way.

  72. When the heart of the believer is caught up with the glory and the supremacy of Christ,

  73. they don't have to be coached.

  74. They don't have to be coerced.

  75. They don't have to be manipulated.

  76. They talk about what's inside, and they talk about the Lord Jesus Christ.

  77. And so I want you to have that fixed in your mind and kind of lock in on that

  78. because what we're going to find in this extended passage is, first of all,

  79. we're going to find that seeing Jesus clearly shrinks and satisfies.

  80. Shrinks and satisfies.

  81. Second thing we're going to see is that seeing Jesus clearly leads to sharing.

  82. It just follows as the night, the day.

  83. The two go together.

  84. So let's talk, first of all, about seeing Jesus clearly shrinks and satisfies.

  85. You pick up there in verse 35, and the next day, again,

  86. John was standing with two of his disciples,

  87. and he looked at Jesus as he walked by, and he said,

  88. Behold, the Lamb of God.

  89. I know that an entire week has passed since the last time we looked at the,

  90. in fact, two weeks since we looked at John 1, verse 19 through 28.

    John 1:19–28

  91. But what we saw when we, three weeks now, I guess,

  92. but when we looked at that passage, one of the things we saw is that,

  93. for one, we're all witnesses.

  94. Do you understand that?

  95. We're all witnesses.

  96. Now, some of us may choose to be bad witnesses.

  97. I'll never forget.

  98. At one point, I was on the phone with an individual dealing with a problem

  99. that I was having with insurance.

  100. Anybody ever here have problems with insurance?

  101. I mean, you know, it was just a little thing, you know, like,

  102. and I'd been on the phone.

  103. I mean, I have a record in the computer of how many times I'd called this person,

  104. and, you know, I was like,

  105. How many of you like listening to music ad nauseum?

  106. Oh, they're playing my song, you know.

  107. And so I remember when I finally got to a human voice being a little snarky,

  108. you know, I was like, I wanted to let them know

  109. that I was a little disappointed with the service I was getting,

  110. and my pastor's shepherd's heart was really kind of right there with it,

  111. and I kind of went off on a tear.

  112. And this woman, unusually, I don't think she was being recorded,

  113. she stopped me and says,

  114. You got an attitude.

  115. Me? Attitude?

  116. And I had to say,

  117. I am ashamed,

  118. and thank you for correcting me.

  119. I want you to know that the guy you're talking to is a pastor.

  120. And I have never met you,

  121. but I ought to know better.

  122. And I have every reason not to be this way,

  123. and I ask you to forgive me.

  124. Hmm?

  125. You see,

  126. we're going to be good witnesses sometimes,

  127. and we're going to be bad witnesses,

  128. but let's face the fact we're all witnesses.

  129. And furthermore,

  130. one of the things that we do see

  131. as we look at that passage in John chapter 1

    John 1 chapter mention

  132. is that a biblical witness is not self-focused.

  133. And that's what I mean when I speak about shrinking.

  134. You know, if you look at the passage,

  135. you'll find here that

  136. John the Baptist was very, very clear about who he was.

  137. And we're going to see that in three different instances

  138. as we work our way through this passage.

  139. First, let's recognize that John the Baptist,

  140. a man who God sent to be his chosen forerunner,

  141. one of a kind,

  142. the only one,

  143. sent by God directly in front of Jesus.

  144. And as we work our way through

  145. the testimony of John the Baptist,

  146. the thing we're going to find is that

  147. here was a man who had no self-focus or ambition.

  148. His humility,

  149. I want you to understand,

  150. was not something that was put on.

  151. How many of you know what I mean

  152. by kind of put on humility?

  153. Oh, that was a wonderful special.

  154. Oh, no, it was nothing.

  155. You know, I mean,

  156. it's like, yeah, right.

  157. I mean, you just can't wait for me

  158. to say another sentence.

  159. You know, you're right.

  160. I guess when I stop and think about it again,

  161. that was a real dud.

  162. I hope you don't sing that again.

  163. You know, that kind of thing.

  164. You know, we find that John was just,

  165. his heart was humble.

  166. And we read later on in the text

  167. as we work our way through the book of John

  168. that there came a time

  169. when John the Baptist's disciples

  170. began following, guess who?

  171. That guy that he baptized.

  172. And remember, his disciples

  173. are kind of worried about this,

  174. and they come to John,

  175. and they say,

  176. hey, John, I don't know

  177. if you're paying attention,

  178. but the crowd is dwindling.

  179. And on that basis,

  180. what John says,

  181. he says,

  182. he must increase

  183. and I must decrease.

  184. Now, listen to me.

  185. John speaks in the Greek

  186. in an imperative.

  187. Do you know what imperative is?

  188. It has to happen.

  189. How many of you understand

  190. that gravity is an imperative?

  191. I mean, if I stepped off from here,

  192. whether I had all kinds of faith

  193. about my ability to walk on air,

  194. guess what would happen?

  195. It's about 14, 16 inches.

  196. Gravity is an imperative.

  197. It would take over and do its job.

  198. And so here is John the Baptist saying,

  199. it's an absolute fact

  200. that he must increase

  201. and I must decrease.

  202. It has to happen.

  203. John understood that.

  204. And he saw the work of God

  205. in that fact

  206. and he was satisfied with it.

  207. And so as you look at this passage,

  208. here's one of the things

  209. I want you to understand.

  210. You can't make much of Jesus

  211. and yourself at the same time.

  212. And so here we see John's lack of self-focus.

  213. There in verse 35,

  214. the next day again,

  215. John was standing with two of his disciples,

  216. you know, kind of the buds

  217. just talking together

  218. and along comes Jesus,

  219. just walking by.

  220. There's no indication that Jesus said,

  221. hey, John, thanks for baptizing me.

  222. Man, that was awesome.

  223. And by the way,

  224. John, do you remember

  225. when the Holy Spirit came down on me

  226. and let you know who I am?

  227. You know, it was like,

  228. John just, there he is,

  229. saw Jesus.

  230. And out of his heart,

  231. because of his understanding

  232. of who Jesus was and is,

  233. he said this,

  234. behold the Lamb of God.

  235. Just a profoundly significant

  236. theological statement

  237. about the fact

  238. that God sent his son

  239. to be the savior of the world

  240. and that his ministry

  241. of saving us from sin

  242. meant that he had to die

  243. in my place

  244. and your place.

  245. And as a result of that,

  246. throughout all eternity,

  247. when we get to heaven

  248. and we enjoy eternal bliss,

  249. we will remember Jesus

  250. as the Lamb

  251. who was slain

  252. before the foundation

  253. of the world.

  254. I want you to imagine

  255. just for a moment, though,

  256. that here is John

  257. and he says,

  258. behold the Lamb of God.

  259. And the next thing we find there,

  260. he looked at Jesus

  261. at verse 36,

  262. he looked at,

  263. behold the Lamb,

  264. and then verse 37,

  265. the disciples,

  266. the two disciples

  267. heard him say this

  268. and what did they do?

  269. They followed Jesus.

  270. We know that numbers

  271. are important,

  272. aren't they?

  273. how many employees

  274. do you have?

  275. How much did that cost?

  276. How many come to the church?

  277. How many watched the game?

  278. Truth of the matter is,

  279. as I was thinking about this,

  280. when I happened,

  281. I didn't watch the game,

  282. I just kind of googled

  283. what the score was

  284. and one of the things

  285. I actually paid attention to

  286. was how big was the crowd

  287. at the Maryland OSU game?

  288. It was something like 52,000,

  289. I thought,

  290. peanuts.

  291. I mean,

  292. small stuff.

  293. When we have a game here,

  294. we have 108,000.

  295. Am I right, Joe?

  296. Gary?

  297. Give or take,

  298. you know,

  299. who's counting?

  300. We're about numbers.

  301. And so,

  302. we don't know

  303. what John was thinking

  304. when he saw

  305. these two disciples

  306. that he cared about

  307. walking off.

  308. But if our carnal spirits

  309. were involved

  310. in any of the thinking

  311. that he may have had,

  312. guess what he was thinking?

  313. Man,

  314. I poured my heart

  315. into these two guys.

  316. They've been following me

  317. and there they go.

  318. We've been there.

  319. Someone sings a special.

  320. Or someone teaches a lesson.

  321. Or someone shares a victory.

  322. And as soon as the conversation

  323. plays out,

  324. we find ourselves thinking,

  325. hey,

  326. I sang that song before.

  327. Don't you remember

  328. the lesson I taught

  329. two weeks ago?

  330. How many of you understand

  331. what I'm talking about?

  332. That wicked,

  333. perverse,

  334. I mean,

  335. you know,

  336. it's like,

  337. where did that thought

  338. come from?

  339. Hell,

  340. you know,

  341. and our own wicked heart.

  342. But you know,

  343. here is John.

  344. And he exclaims

  345. ecstatically,

  346. with emotion and affection,

  347. behold,

  348. look,

  349. it's the Lamb.

  350. And as a result

  351. of his

  352. clear

  353. testimony,

  354. he has two

  355. that follow.

  356. you look at the passage,

  357. and it says,

  358. they followed Jesus.

  359. Jesus turned

  360. and saw them following

  361. and said to them,

  362. what are you seeking?

  363. What's up?

  364. By the way,

  365. how many of you realize

  366. that questions

  367. are one of the ways

  368. to really find out

  369. what's in people's hearts?

  370. Okay?

  371. Questions are

  372. supremely important.

  373. And so,

  374. here are the two disciples.

  375. Hey,

  376. what's up?

  377. What are you thinking?

  378. And I love the fact

  379. that they invite themselves

  380. to Jesus' home.

  381. Now,

  382. that's an indication

  383. to me

  384. that they really

  385. wanted

  386. something from Jesus.

  387. This wasn't just

  388. a passing fancy.

  389. Their heart

  390. had been convicted

  391. by the Spirit of God

  392. that Jesus

  393. is the one

  394. they needed.

  395. Remember later

  396. in John chapter 6

    John 6 chapter mention

  397. where Jesus

  398. preaches that

  399. thunder and brimstone

  400. kind of sermon

  401. where at the beginning

  402. he has a big crowd

  403. and when it's all gone,

  404. who's left?

  405. Does anybody remember?

  406. Just the disciples.

  407. And Jesus turns to them

  408. and says,

  409. are you guys packing up

  410. and leaving too?

  411. And what did Peter say?

  412. Who remembers?

  413. Where are we going?

  414. You got the words.

  415. You're the one.

  416. Evidently,

  417. these two disciples

  418. were persuaded

  419. of the supremacy

  420. of Christ

  421. and they said,

  422. no,

  423. we want to spend

  424. time with you.

  425. And he said,

  426. come,

  427. come on,

  428. come with me.

  429. And as you look

  430. at this passage,

  431. there are a couple things

  432. that I want you to mark.

  433. For one,

  434. in verse 37

  435. it says,

  436. they followed him.

  437. We're going to get back

  438. to that.

  439. I want you to put your finger

  440. on verse 40

  441. because I want to tell you

  442. that I've already started

  443. preparing the message

  444. for this.

  445. Verse 40.

  446. We're a long way,

  447. Lord willing,

  448. we're a long way

  449. from John chapter 13.

    John 13 chapter mention

  450. But in verse 40

  451. it says,

  452. one of the two.

  453. Now,

  454. does anybody know offhand

  455. who one is?

  456. This is important.

  457. It's actually

  458. the apostle John.

  459. And in the gospel

  460. that he wrote,

  461. he never names himself.

  462. He only refers to himself,

  463. I think,

  464. three or four times

  465. by this title.

  466. One whom Jesus loved.

  467. Now,

  468. would the Holy Spirit

  469. endorse

  470. someone being arrogant

  471. and proud

  472. about the fact

  473. that they had been

  474. loved by Christ?

  475. And what is the answer

  476. from reasonable Christians?

  477. The answer is,

  478. not in your life.

  479. Now,

  480. could John have said

  481. something ungodly?

  482. That's true.

  483. But we'd have somewhere

  484. kind of rebuttal

  485. in relationship to that.

  486. We're going to come

  487. to this issue

  488. of what John meant

  489. when he said,

  490. one whom Jesus loved.

  491. But I want you to recognize

  492. that as we work our way

  493. through the text now,

  494. one of the things

  495. that I want you to see here

  496. is that a clear view

  497. of Jesus

  498. changes life's directions.

  499. It changes life's directions.

  500. We are going to see

  501. in this passage,

  502. verse 35 on,

  503. we're going to see

  504. for one thing

  505. that as these two disciples

  506. heard John speak

  507. definitively,

  508. I mean,

  509. clearly,

  510. convictingly,

  511. this is the Lamb of God.

  512. This is the Messiah.

  513. This is the Savior

  514. of the world.

  515. What happened

  516. is that

  517. they changed their direction.

  518. We read that Philip left

  519. whatever he was doing

  520. to follow.

  521. And I want you to recognize

  522. that it wasn't because

  523. of coercion

  524. or pressure.

  525. It wasn't because

  526. there was a certain

  527. benefit package

  528. that came with

  529. following Jesus

  530. in the immediate present,

  531. better health insurance,

  532. you know,

  533. that kind of thing.

  534. I want you to understand

  535. when you really

  536. get down to it

  537. that apart from

  538. John the Apostle,

  539. who they believe

  540. died as an exile,

  541. every,

  542. except for Judas,

  543. every other disciple

  544. was executed

  545. for their faith.

  546. It was their view

  547. of Christ

  548. that led to a change

  549. of direction.

  550. So as you sit out here,

  551. one of the questions

  552. to ask yourself

  553. practically is,

  554. is your life's direction

  555. different

  556. because you've seen

  557. Jesus clearly.

  558. Now stop just for a minute.

  559. When we think about

  560. life's direction,

  561. we have a tendency

  562. of getting caught up

  563. in the mundane

  564. and the things

  565. that have no

  566. eternal significance.

  567. Let me explain

  568. what I mean by that.

  569. I mean tomorrow morning,

  570. given time,

  571. whatever,

  572. most of you here

  573. are going to either

  574. go to school

  575. or go to work.

  576. Right?

  577. That's not

  578. your life's

  579. real direction.

  580. That's just how

  581. God has employed you

  582. to have a spiritual

  583. and lasting impact

  584. in the lives

  585. of other people

  586. who desperately

  587. need Christ.

  588. I want you to

  589. understand something else

  590. as we look at the passage

  591. in broad terms.

  592. A clear view of Jesus

  593. changes life's purpose.

  594. That's part of what

  595. I'm reflecting on here.

  596. Some went from

  597. being fishermen

  598. to being fishers of men.

  599. One went from

  600. being a doctor

  601. to being a disciple.

  602. Another went from

  603. being a tax collector

  604. to a disciple.

  605. Ask any person

  606. that has been swept away

  607. by the gospel

  608. about what their life

  609. is all about.

  610. Let me say that again

  611. slowly because I think

  612. we have to understand this.

  613. Ask any person

  614. whose life has been

  615. swept away

  616. by the beauty

  617. of the gospel,

  618. what's your life about?

  619. Here's what they won't say.

  620. It's about my retirement.

  621. It's about my motor home.

  622. It's about how much

  623. my investments

  624. are making

  625. so I can be

  626. a pretty self-indulgent

  627. fool.

  628. Tell a story

  629. on myself.

  630. Three, four years ago,

  631. well, that's two years ago

  632. actually,

  633. that I began thinking

  634. to myself,

  635. when I retire,

  636. I think I'm going

  637. to get a small plot

  638. of land,

  639. about ten acres,

  640. and I'm going to raise

  641. chickens and cows.

  642. house.

  643. This is true.

  644. In fact,

  645. my bride

  646. even entertained me

  647. so much,

  648. hi Judith,

  649. that we began

  650. driving around

  651. looking at properties.

  652. I remember actually

  653. thinking to myself,

  654. you know what?

  655. If you have

  656. those ten acres

  657. or twelve acres

  658. or whatever,

  659. the next thing

  660. you have to have

  661. is a mower.

  662. And then,

  663. this is just Tim

  664. kind of speculating

  665. in his mind

  666. and he thought,

  667. you know what?

  668. If you're going

  669. to keep it mowed

  670. so you can kind of

  671. sit there and look at it

  672. and like short grass,

  673. you know,

  674. you're going to spend

  675. four, five,

  676. maybe six hours

  677. mowing the sucker

  678. every week

  679. when it rains,

  680. you know,

  681. and then,

  682. you know something

  683. about cows

  684. and chickens

  685. and goats?

  686. You have to feed them.

  687. I remember actually

  688. doing the math

  689. and I was convicted.

  690. I was convicted.

  691. God rescued me

  692. from being a miserable,

  693. despicable sinner

  694. to spend the rest

  695. of my life

  696. pointing to Jesus,

  697. not at the back end

  698. of chickens and cows.

  699. And when you talk

  700. to people

  701. who have been swept away

  702. by the glory of Christ,

  703. you hear about it.

  704. So,

  705. as you look at this

  706. radical change here,

  707. we find in John the Baptist

  708. for one,

  709. and then we find

  710. in the two disciples

  711. there in verse 37

  712. and again in verse 40,

  713. one of the things

  714. that we understand

  715. is that these individuals

  716. were willing

  717. to lay it all aside

  718. so that they could have

  719. a sweeter

  720. and more significant

  721. relationship

  722. with the Lord Jesus.

  723. Does that mark

  724. your life?

  725. Think with me

  726. just for a moment

  727. of a companion passage

  728. in relationship

  729. to this

  730. and turn over

  731. in your Bible

  732. to Philippians chapter 3

    Philippians 3:7–9

  733. verse 7 through 9.

  734. Let me kind of

  735. start earlier

  736. in verse 4.

  737. Though I myself

  738. have reason for confidence

  739. in the flesh also,

  740. if anyone else

  741. thinks he has reason

  742. for confidence

  743. in the flesh,

  744. I have more.

  745. Verse 5.

  746. I was making

  747. $500,000 a year

  748. as a speaker

  749. on a tour

  750. and I had property

  751. in Florida

  752. and I also had property

  753. just not in the passage

  754. but just understand

  755. the passage.

  756. Here is John the,

  757. is Paul saying,

  758. I had it all.

  759. property in the Rockies,

  760. property in the

  761. Smoky Mountains,

  762. vacation home

  763. in Florida,

  764. you know,

  765. and I had it all.

  766. Everybody thought

  767. I was the real thing

  768. and then,

  769. guess what?

  770. Verse 8.

  771. Indeed,

  772. I count everything

  773. as lost

  774. because of the

  775. surpassing worth

  776. of knowing Christ Jesus

  777. my Lord.

  778. all that

  779. has become

  780. junk

  781. in my thinking

  782. in comparison

  783. to the glory

  784. and the satisfaction

  785. of knowing Christ.

  786. Where is that

  787. in your thinking?

  788. He says,

  789. I count it all rubbish

  790. that I may gain Christ

  791. and be found

  792. in him

  793. not having

  794. mine own righteousness

  795. that comes from the law

  796. but that which

  797. comes through

  798. faith in Christ

  799. the righteousness

  800. from God

  801. that depends

  802. on Christ.

  803. Let's see

  804. something second.

  805. Seeing Jesus

  806. clearly

  807. leads

  808. to sharing.

  809. We should know

  810. by now

  811. that John the Baptist

  812. saw Jesus

  813. clearly

  814. and we understand

  815. that the reason

  816. he saw him

  817. clearly

  818. was because

  819. of the work

  820. of the Holy Spirit.

  821. How many of you

  822. recognize that?

  823. Remember what John said?

  824. I had no idea

  825. who he was going

  826. to be

  827. except for the fact

  828. that I had been

  829. told by divine

  830. utterance

  831. that the one

  832. that the Holy Spirit

  833. came down

  834. and stayed on

  835. that's the Messiah.

  836. And then he met

  837. Jesus

  838. and saw that happen.

  839. That's him.

  840. That's him.

  841. And so here is

  842. John the Baptist

  843. who

  844. had a clear picture

  845. of Jesus

  846. and as a result

  847. the thing

  848. that we find

  849. about John

  850. working our way

  851. through the passage

  852. is that

  853. his joy

  854. and his satisfaction

  855. was in pointing

  856. others to Christ.

  857. And some

  858. saw Jesus

  859. through John's testimony

  860. and were affected.

  861. How do we know that?

  862. Well what we find

  863. here in the passage

  864. as we allude

  865. to verse 37

  866. and then again

  867. to 40

  868. was that what

  869. happened is

  870. as a result

  871. of the testimony

  872. of John the Baptist

  873. there were two

  874. that were drawn

  875. off to become

  876. the disciples

  877. of Christ.

  878. And so I want

  879. you to recognize

  880. that seeing

  881. Jesus clearly

  882. by the work

  883. of the Spirit

  884. of God

  885. ends up

  886. calling individuals

  887. away from

  888. where they are

  889. and their goals

  890. and ambitions

  891. of life

  892. and changing

  893. them dramatically

  894. to make them

  895. focused on

  896. the Lord Jesus

  897. and following

  898. that

  899. you end up

  900. with a sequence

  901. that we shouldn't

  902. miss.

  903. Look at

  904. the passage

  905. again.

  906. It says

  907. there in verse

  908. 40

  909. one of the two

  910. who heard

  911. John speak

  912. and followed

  913. Jesus

  914. was Andrew

  915. Simon Peter's

  916. brother.

  917. He first

  918. found

  919. when did

  920. he do it?

  921. When did

  922. he find

  923. his brother?

  924. Immediately.

  925. We find

  926. the same

  927. thing play

  928. out

  929. if you will

  930. in verse

  931. 43 and 45

  932. kind of skip

  933. ahead a little

  934. bit.

  935. The next day

  936. Jesus decided

  937. to go to

  938. Galilee

  939. he found

  940. Philip

  941. and said

  942. to him

  943. follow me

  944. and Philip

  945. was from

  946. Bethsaida

  947. the city

  948. of Andrew

  949. and Peter

  950. Philip

  951. found

  952. Nathanael

  953. what really

  954. prompts

  955. gospel

  956. witnessing?

  957. I want to

  958. say this

  959. carefully.

  960. What really

  961. prompts

  962. gospel

  963. witnessing?

  964. I want to

  965. say it

  966. this way

  967. an abiding

  968. joy in

  969. forgiven

  970. sin and

  971. a personal

  972. relationship

  973. with Christ.

  974. That's what

  975. does it.

  976. Secondly

  977. I would add

  978. this a desire

  979. to share

  980. what's

  981. supremely

  982. satisfying

  983. as I was

  984. driving to

  985. church this

  986. morning.

  987. I was

  988. thinking about

  989. my back

  990. surgery

  991. some 15

  992. 20 years

  993. ago.

  994. I forget

  995. when it

  996. was but

  997. I remember

  998. being

  999. gurnied

  1000. into surgery

  1001. with numbness

  1002. down my

  1003. leg and

  1004. constant pain

  1005. and after

  1006. I woke

  1007. up

  1008. and all

  1009. those other

  1010. things were

  1011. out of my

  1012. body I

  1013. remember

  1014. kind of

  1015. moving my

  1016. leg to

  1017. find out

  1018. so how's

  1019. the pain?

  1020. It wasn't

  1021. there.

  1022. I became

  1023. a lifetime

  1024. debtor to

  1025. Dr.

  1026. Bay.

  1027. Anybody

  1028. that comes

  1029. to me

  1030. and says

  1031. I'm

  1032. having

  1033. back

  1034. pain

  1035. go see

  1036. Dr.

  1037. Bay.

  1038. It's

  1039. just

  1040. natural.

  1041. You

  1042. follow

  1043. that?

  1044. The

  1045. stunning

  1046. truth

  1047. about the

  1048. history of

  1049. gospel

  1050. witnessing

  1051. around the

  1052. world

  1053. is that the

  1054. vast majority

  1055. of people

  1056. that have

  1057. been drawn

  1058. to Christ

  1059. have had

  1060. no

  1061. professional

  1062. training

  1063. no

  1064. preparation

  1065. other than

  1066. being

  1067. recipients of

  1068. the grace

  1069. of God

  1070. in their

  1071. lives.

  1072. I want

  1073. you to look

  1074. at a couple

  1075. things in

  1076. relationships.

  1077. I've got to

  1078. prove my

  1079. point with

  1080. the Bible.

  1081. Would you

  1082. agree with

  1083. that?

  1084. Let's go

  1085. to Acts

    Acts 8:1

  1086. chapter 8

  1087. verse 1.

  1088. Keep your

  1089. finger because

  1090. we're coming

  1091. back to

  1092. John but

  1093. Acts chapter

    Acts 8:1

  1094. 8 verse

  1095. 1.

  1096. And Saul

  1097. approved of

  1098. his execution

  1099. and there

  1100. arose on that

  1101. day a great

  1102. persecution

  1103. against the

  1104. church in

  1105. Jerusalem and

  1106. they were all

  1107. scattered throughout

  1108. the regions of

  1109. Judea and

  1110. Samaria except

  1111. the apostles.

  1112. The professionals

  1113. stayed home.

  1114. Who went

  1115. everywhere else?

  1116. Just the

  1117. common

  1118. disciples.

  1119. The people

  1120. whose lives

  1121. had been

  1122. radically

  1123. changed by

  1124. the ministry

  1125. of the gospel

  1126. and knew the

  1127. complete forgiveness

  1128. for all sins

  1129. through the

  1130. finished work

  1131. of the Lord

  1132. Jesus.

  1133. And you know

  1134. what?

  1135. They couldn't

  1136. help but talk

  1137. about what was

  1138. good in their

  1139. lives.

  1140. I want you

  1141. to see the

  1142. way this all

  1143. played out.

  1144. We kind of

  1145. cut ahead to

  1146. Acts chapter

    Acts 17:6

  1147. 17 verse

  1148. 6.

  1149. Here's

  1150. Paul.

  1151. Paul and

  1152. Silas actually

  1153. in Thessalonica

  1154. I believe it

  1155. is.

  1156. And people

  1157. end up being

  1158. pretty upset

  1159. by having

  1160. these preachers

  1161. here in town.

  1162. But a very

  1163. interesting little

  1164. statement is made

  1165. in verse 6.

  1166. And what they

  1167. could not find,

  1168. Paul and Silas,

  1169. they'd been

  1170. hidden by

  1171. other believers,

  1172. they cry out

  1173. to the city

  1174. authorities and

  1175. say, listen,

  1176. these men who

  1177. have turned the

  1178. world upside

  1179. down have

  1180. come here

  1181. also.

  1182. Stop and

  1183. think for me

  1184. just for a

  1185. minute.

  1186. Do you think

  1187. it was just

  1188. Paul and

  1189. Silas really

  1190. that were

  1191. used by God

  1192. to turn the

  1193. world upside

  1194. down?

  1195. Not in

  1196. your life.

  1197. We know

  1198. of names

  1199. like D.L.

  1200. Moody.

  1201. Most of us

  1202. don't know

  1203. that Kincaid

  1204. was the

  1205. guy who

  1206. actually

  1207. witnessed

  1208. to a

  1209. young shoe

  1210. salesman

  1211. and sharing

  1212. the gospel

  1213. led to a

  1214. transformed

  1215. life.

  1216. We know

  1217. Billy Graham,

  1218. but the

  1219. vast majority

  1220. of people

  1221. who have

  1222. really been

  1223. transformed by

  1224. the gospel

  1225. and are

  1226. transforming

  1227. the lives

  1228. of others

  1229. with the

  1230. testimony

  1231. of Christ

  1232. are unnamed.

  1233. So let me

  1234. ask you a

  1235. question.

  1236. How is your

  1237. witness?

  1238. Is that a

  1239. fair question?

  1240. How is your

  1241. witness?

  1242. If I were

  1243. to honestly

  1244. ask other

  1245. people at

  1246. work,

  1247. and we're

  1248. talking about

  1249. work,

  1250. politics?

  1251. What are

  1252. the things

  1253. that you

  1254. are passionate

  1255. about and

  1256. that you

  1257. have complete

  1258. confidence in?

  1259. Oh,

  1260. politics.

  1261. There's a

  1262. Greek word for

  1263. it.

  1264. It's called

  1265. meganoito.

  1266. No more

  1267. of that.

  1268. It's like,

  1269. I am convinced

  1270. that God

  1271. does not

  1272. wear a label

  1273. that says

  1274. vote for me,

  1275. Republican or

  1276. Democrat.

  1277. that.

  1278. Here's another

  1279. thing.

  1280. God is not

  1281. that primarily

  1282. concerned that

  1283. his children

  1284. become evangelists

  1285. for the

  1286. things they're

  1287. selling,

  1288. or evangelists

  1289. for their

  1290. child's

  1291. t-ball team,

  1292. or whatever

  1293. else.

  1294. The thing

  1295. that I should

  1296. be known

  1297. of,

  1298. listen,

  1299. the thing

  1300. that I should

  1301. be known

  1302. for,

  1303. particularly in

  1304. the unbelieving

  1305. circles that

  1306. I end up

  1307. on occasion

  1308. around,

  1309. is that I

  1310. am,

  1311. first of all,

  1312. a testimony

  1313. by my

  1314. behavior to

  1315. the grace

  1316. of Christ.

  1317. And secondly,

  1318. that when God

  1319. gives me an

  1320. opportunity,

  1321. I'm excited

  1322. to talk about

  1323. the one who

  1324. forgave all

  1325. my sins.

  1326. Is that

  1327. where it's

  1328. at with

  1329. you?

  1330. So,

  1331. first question

  1332. I would ask

  1333. in relationship

  1334. to this

  1335. business of

  1336. how you're

  1337. witness is

  1338. that,

  1339. well,

  1340. do you

  1341. really know

  1342. him?

  1343. I mean,

  1344. I'm convinced

  1345. one of the

  1346. things that

  1347. happens is

  1348. people grow

  1349. up in a

  1350. church,

  1351. they learn

  1352. the vocabulary

  1353. of the

  1354. church,

  1355. they could

  1356. even be

  1357. baptized.

  1358. I have

  1359. baptized more

  1360. people more

  1361. than once

  1362. than I care

  1363. to think

  1364. about.

  1365. how many

  1366. of you

  1367. caught that?

  1368. Nothing wrong

  1369. with baptism,

  1370. but I want you

  1371. to understand

  1372. that baptism

  1373. doesn't save

  1374. you.

  1375. Baptism is

  1376. an outward

  1377. sign of what

  1378. God's done

  1379. in your heart

  1380. and salvation.

  1381. So,

  1382. I want you

  1383. to understand

  1384. if you're

  1385. sitting here

  1386. and you,

  1387. I have

  1388. never

  1389. witnessed

  1390. other than

  1391. about my

  1392. kids,

  1393. you know,

  1394. whatever,

  1395. or my dog

  1396. or whatever,

  1397. okay,

  1398. if it's not

  1399. in your

  1400. heart,

  1401. you may not

  1402. be a person

  1403. who has

  1404. enjoyed

  1405. the blessing

  1406. of complete

  1407. forgiveness.

  1408. You're not

  1409. a repentant

  1410. individual

  1411. who's been

  1412. drawn to

  1413. realize

  1414. the abiding

  1415. grace

  1416. of God

  1417. in salvation.

  1418. And,

  1419. you know,

  1420. the woman

  1421. at the well,

  1422. no coaching,

  1423. off she went

  1424. to town.

  1425. The demoniac

  1426. just needed

  1427. a little push,

  1428. remember that?

  1429. He said,

  1430. Jesus,

  1431. I don't want

  1432. to go back

  1433. to town.

  1434. Everybody

  1435. remembers

  1436. what a skunk

  1437. I was.

  1438. He said,

  1439. go back

  1440. and show

  1441. them.

  1442. You're

  1443. changed.

  1444. The truth

  1445. of the matter

  1446. is that

  1447. some of you

  1448. don't know

  1449. Christ,

  1450. and that's

  1451. the reason

  1452. for the lack

  1453. of affection

  1454. and passion.

  1455. Number two,

  1456. there are some

  1457. of you here

  1458. that have lost

  1459. your first love.

  1460. How many of you

  1461. know that love

  1462. needs to be nurtured?

  1463. It just doesn't

  1464. kind of stay there?

  1465. Some of you

  1466. have had the enemy

  1467. of your soul

  1468. trap you with

  1469. a secret sin,

  1470. and you're

  1471. bound up

  1472. with bitterness

  1473. and sullenness.

  1474. Can I tell you

  1475. something?

  1476. You can't have

  1477. a bad attitude

  1478. and be a good

  1479. witness.

  1480. Can everybody

  1481. smile at that

  1482. one?

  1483. That can't be

  1484. applied to anybody

  1485. here that I know,

  1486. but you can't

  1487. say it so we

  1488. understand it.

  1489. You can't be a

  1490. person with a bad

  1491. attitude and be a

  1492. good witness.

  1493. And all God's

  1494. people said,

  1495. well, that wasn't

  1496. bad.

  1497. Okay.

  1498. I want to say

  1499. this.

  1500. Believers who

  1501. are not

  1502. passionate about

  1503. the Lamb have

  1504. something that is

  1505. hindering their

  1506. joy and their

  1507. witness.

  1508. And so when that

  1509. is the fact, you

  1510. who know Christ can

  1511. do one of two

  1512. things in the face

  1513. of the Spirit's

  1514. work this morning

  1515. which is tapping

  1516. on your shoulder

  1517. and saying,

  1518. this needs to be

  1519. changed.

  1520. Two choices.

  1521. You can go ahead

  1522. and just tempt God

  1523. with your stubborn

  1524. spirit.

  1525. Anybody ever tried

  1526. that before besides

  1527. me?

  1528. You don't mean to

  1529. say bring it on,

  1530. but when you say

1531. no to God, when He

  1532. is speaking to you

  1533. about having a

  1534. contrite spirit in

  1535. the face of the

  1536. convicting work of

  1537. the Spirit, and you

  1538. just say yeah, He

  1539. just says, I'm

  1540. there, and He'll

  1541. help you.

  1542. Or, and here's

  1543. what Tim Kenoyer

1544. has to do on a

  1545. periodic basis,

  1546. because me and

  1547. attitudes are

  1548. something God has

  1549. to help me with.

  1550. You understand

  1551. that?

  1552. I'm an attitude

  1553. inventor.

  1554. I just pop.

  1555. Where did that

  1556. come from?

  1557. You can confess the

  1558. need that you have

1559. in your lack of awe

  1560. and love for the

  1561. Lord Jesus Christ.

1562. You can go ahead and

  1563. say it.

1564. By the way, does He

  1565. not know this?

  1566. No, He knows.

1567. But He likes for you

  1568. to have the humility

  1569. to say, I don't feel

  1570. anything.

  1571. I don't have any

  1572. affections for you.

  1573. And it's not your

  1574. problem, but I need

  1575. your help.

  1576. Now, which of the

  1577. two is more

  1578. intelligent?

  1579. Help me here.

  1580. One or two?

1581. One of the things I

1582. read in a book by,

  1583. forget the name,

  1584. John Krodz.

  1585. He said, being foolish

  1586. is a career choice.

1587. There are some of you

  1588. in this service this

  1589. morning that are

  1590. consciously and

  1591. deliberately saying

  1592. no to God about

  1593. the shallowness of

  1594. your affection and

1595. the lack of joy in

  1596. the Holy Spirit and

  1597. the complete absence

  1598. of just that natural

  1599. bubbling of saying,

  1600. come and see,

  1601. the one who has

  1602. forgiven all of my

  1603. sins.

  1604. And I would plead

  1605. with you this

  1606. morning.

  1607. Do not tempt

  1608. the Lord.

  1609. Humble yourself

  1610. because as Charles

  1611. Spurgeon rightly

  1612. says, we have two

  1613. choices, either

  1614. humble ourself or

  1615. let Him humble

  1616. us.

  1617. being foolish is a

  1618. career choice.

  1619. Let's pray.

  1620. Father, this morning

  1621. as our hearts

  1622. consider the text

  1623. and we see what

  1624. you did in John

  1625. the Baptist's life

  1626. and we see what

  1627. you did in the

  1628. lives of these men

  1629. that you called to

  1630. become disciples,

  1631. we don't want to

  1632. waste our lives in

  1633. pettiness and

  1634. smallness.

1635. We want to have the

  1636. humility to confess

  1637. the hardness of our

  1638. heart.

  1639. and we know

  1640. our thinking is

  1641. wrong and we need

  1642. the Spirit to make

  1643. a difference.

1644. We don't want to be

  1645. foolish

  1646. and thumb our

  1647. nose at the

  1648. Holy One of

  1649. Israel.

1650. And so it is my

  1651. prayer that this

  1652. morning your Spirit

1653. would get a hold of

  1654. the hearts of all

  1655. of your people.

  1656. that our view of

  1657. Christ would be the

  1658. thing that dominates,

  1659. brings about

  1660. transformation to

  1661. the glory of our

  1662. Savior.

1663. And we ask this in

  1664. Jesus' name.

  1665. Amen.
