  1. I would like you to turn in your Bibles this morning to John chapter 2.

    John 2 chapter mention

  2. John chapter 2, and I want you to follow with me as I begin reading there in verse 13 in your own Bible.

    John 2 chapter mention

  3. I'll take a minute and let you get squared out in the passage.

  4. John chapter 2, verse 13.

    John 2:13

  5. The Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

  6. In the temple, he found those who were selling oxen and sheep and pigeons,

  7. and the money changers sitting there and making a whip of cords.

  8. He drove them all out of the temple with the sheep and oxen,

  9. and he poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables.

  10. And he told those who sold the pigeons,

  11. Take these things away. Do not make my father's house a house of trade.

  12. Father God,

  13. we're very thankful that in your

  14. infinite mercy,

  15. you graciously have given to us your word,

  16. which is the complete revelation

  17. provided by you,

  18. whereby we may,

  19. as it says in 2 Timothy,

  20. have all that we need for life and godliness.

  21. We want to be a people that rely upon the word this morning to govern not only what we sing about,

  22. but also what we think about and what we say.

  23. And we ask that our time in the scriptures,

  24. enabled by the Spirit,

  25. helps us grow in our love for the Lord Jesus Christ and our sincere desire to be more like him.

  26. Pray for those that are here this morning that do not know Christ as their personal Savior,

  27. that this morning would be the hour of their salvation and the day of their deliverance from the bondage and the burden of their sin,

  28. and also the uncertainty of their eternal destiny.

  29. We ask that you would be a people,

  30. that you would help us be a people that have our hearts focused by your Spirit

  31. on your glory

  32. and your truth.

  33. And we ask this in

  34. the name of Jesus.

  35. Amen.

  36. Well, let me kind of frame the background of what we're looking at this morning.

  37. And so, if you would think with me just for a moment,

  38. this passage in chapter 2 of John

  39. is the second little picture that we have

  40. of John the Baptist after that lengthy introduction that we found

  41. that explained to us in brief

  42. how the book of John was going to play out.

  43. I remind you that John is different than the other Gospels

  44. in that it uses very, very few actual illustrations

  45. of the things that Jesus was engaged in doing publicly.

  46. The first thing that we saw in John chapter 2,

    John 2 chapter mention

  47. you'll remember,

  48. was that he was at a wedding

  49. and his mother came to him

  50. and asked him about the problem that they had

  51. with the lack of wine,

  52. and Jesus turned the water into wine,

  53. did a miracle,

  54. and we understand that not many people actually

  55. were affected by that.

  56. We know that five of his disciples knew what had happened.

  57. We know that the servants knew what had happened.

  58. And maybe a few other people kind of heard about what that was

  59. and were affected by the reality of the power of Christ

  60. displayed over natural things.

  61. And so, here we have that little picture of Jesus

  62. doing something relatively quiet,

  63. and then we have this picture of Jesus

  64. walking into Jerusalem

  65. and kind of dropping an atomic bomb

  66. over Nagasaki, over Hiroshima.

  67. Do you follow me?

  68. What he did in the temple

  69. was an absolute blast

  70. in comparison to that little quiet miracle

  71. that he did at the wedding.

  72. We tend to think about Jesus

  73. either as a relatively quiet,

  74. little kind of milk toast kind of guy

  75. going around and, you know,

  76. putting flowers in people's hair

  77. or something like that.

  78. Particularly if you rely upon

  79. the liberal picture of Jesus.

  80. He's kind of some soft little guy

  81. that goes around saying sweet things

  82. and, you know,

  83. just kind of love everybody.

  84. And it's important to love people,

  85. but I want you to understand

  86. that the picture we have in the Bible

  87. is far more complex than that.

  88. And as we come to this passage,

  89. the background of the Lamb

  90. dealing with the wedding feast

  91. now comes face to face

  92. with the Lion of Judah

  93. and the judge of the whole earth.

  94. And so I want you to begin

  95. by first of all recognizing

  96. that Jesus steps into a situation

  97. where glory was corrupted.

  98. After spending a few days,

  99. and that's what we find there

  100. in verse 13,

  101. the Passover of the Jews was at hand

  102. and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

  103. What had happened earlier

  104. in verse 12,

  105. it says that he spent a couple days

  106. with his family

  107. and now it's time

  108. to go up to Jerusalem

  109. to be part of that holy celebration.

  110. It was a requirement.

  111. The law stipulated

  112. that the Jews were to gather in Jerusalem

  113. on a regular basis annually

  114. and they were to remember the Passover.

  115. The Passover was a very special,

  116. a moment in the life of God's people

  117. in particular

  118. because it was that day

  119. when God had delivered them

  120. from the land of Egypt

  121. where they had been enslaved

  122. by the Egyptians.

  123. And how did God do that?

  124. Remember?

  125. He came to them and said,

  126. I want to tell you something

  127. that this night

  128. is going to be absolutely unique.

  129. And in order to protect your family,

  130. you are to kill the sacrificial,

  131. the Passover lamb,

  132. and you are to put the blood of that lamb

  133. on the lentil over the top

  134. and on both sides on the doorposts.

  135. And when I send death

  136. through the nation of Egypt

  137. to kill every one of the firstborn

  138. where the mark of the blood is seen,

  139. death will not enter.

  140. And so every year,

  141. God had ordained

  142. that the nation of Israel

  143. was to remember the Passover

  144. and it was a time

  145. when the people gathered

  146. to make sacrifice.

  147. They were required to do that.

  148. And incidentally,

  149. when you made sacrifice,

  150. you didn't just bring

  151. any old whatever you had.

  152. You had to bring a lamb

  153. that was spotless,

  154. that was pure.

  155. Over time,

  156. it had kind of developed

  157. into the fact that the lamb,

  158. how many of you know

  159. what the word kosher is?

  160. How many of you ever see it?

  161. A kosher salt, right?

  162. Kosher dill pickles.

  163. What does kosher mean?

  164. Does anybody know?

  165. Does anybody know

  166. what kosher means?

  167. It means that it has actually

  168. been approved

  169. for consumption by Jewish people.

  170. And who has approved it?

  171. Is it Pillsbury?

  172. Or is it Heinz?

  173. Who approves kosher?

  174. Kosher.

  175. There has to be a priest

  176. who's involved in determining

  177. that those pickles

  178. really are kosher.

  179. I'm going to tell you something.

  180. You don't have kosher on there

  181. without somebody involved

  182. in saying that it's kosher.

  183. Do you understand that?

  184. And so, over time,

  185. this idea of bringing

  186. your own lamb

  187. and just whatever you wanted to do

  188. into the temple

  189. to have sacrifice,

  190. it kind of moved over

  191. to the side of,

  192. if you really want to bring

  193. a lamb in to have it

  194. sacrificed in the temple,

  195. you had to have a priest

  196. sign off on it.

  197. And so, I want you to understand

  198. that this beautiful area,

  199. the temple,

  200. and the word that is used there

  201. in the Greek communicates

  202. that it was the larger part.

  203. There was a court of the Gentiles,

  204. a very large area.

  205. And that large area

  206. had actually been turned

  207. into a bazaar

  208. where the pilgrims

  209. were being cheated.

  210. You see,

  211. here's how it plays out.

  212. One commentator,

  213. doing some research

  214. on ancient history,

  215. discovered that

  216. a five-cent dove,

  217. when it became kosher

  218. and was carried into the temple

  219. for sacrifice,

  220. became a four-dollar option.

  221. Now, if a five-cent dove

  222. became a four-dollar option,

  223. guess what it costs you

  224. to buy a kosher lamb?

  225. You got it?

  226. Way up the food chain.

  227. Not only that,

  228. there was another thing

  229. that was required

  230. of a good Jewish man.

  231. He had to pay a temple tax.

  232. And when he would come in,

  233. he would pay his half shekel.

  234. Now, a shekel

  235. is a piece of Jewish money.

  236. And the high priest,

  237. I mean,

  238. outside of the temple,

  239. you could use any kind of money

  240. that you had in your pocket.

  241. But when you went into the temple,

  242. if you wanted to pay

  243. your tax at the temple,

  244. you had to have a half shekel.

  245. And guess what there were provided

  246. or was provided for you?

  247. There were very kind,

  248. congenial businessmen

  249. that were sitting there

  250. that had half shekels in abundance.

  251. But guess what happened

  252. to the translation of the fees?

  253. How many of you

  254. have traveled around the world

  255. or somewhere where you've had

  256. to have your money changed

  257. from good old U.S. dollars

  258. into rubles

  259. or into rupees

  260. or into yen

  261. or whatever?

  262. What happens at the money changer?

  263. Does anybody know?

  264. Tom, what happens?

  265. There's a little bit of profit.

  266. Well, I want you to know

  267. that the money changers

  268. were not into

  269. a little bit of profit.

  270. I mean,

  271. how many of you

  272. have been to an OSU game

  273. and noticed what happens

  274. to bottles of water there?

  275. I've been once in my life.

  276. And I remember going in

  277. and I got thirsty

  278. and I was sitting way up there

  279. in nosebleed.

  280. I was having to suck oxygen

  281. to make it through the day.

  282. But anyway,

  283. I was way up there

  284. and I thought,

  285. well, I think I'll go

  286. get a bottle of water.

  287. I mean,

  288. there are a lot of people

  289. sitting around drinking water

  290. and drinks

  291. and having hot dogs.

  292. And I remember

  293. when I walked in

  294. that they wanted me to,

  295. you know,

  296. do you have anything

  297. in your coat?

  298. You know,

  299. no, I'm clean.

  300. So I thought I'd walk down

  301. to concession stand

  302. and get myself

  303. a bottle of water

  304. and a couple hot dogs

  305. or something like that.

  306. I changed my mind.

  307. I mean,

  308. what you can buy

  309. at Meijer or Walmart

  310. for pennies

  311. was a $4 option.

  312. And hot dogs,

  313. forget it.

  314. There was no way

  315. in the world

  316. that I was going

  317. to indulge

  318. those thieves

  319. for the price

  320. that they were asking for.

  321. Now,

  322. I want you to imagine

  323. that you can't worship

  324. without buying in

  325. to the lamb

  326. and to the temple tax.

  327. Do you follow that?

  328. It was an option

  329. for me to say no

  330. to the $4 bottle of water

  331. and no to the,

  332. I think it was like $6

  333. or $8 for a hot dog.

  334. It was like,

  335. I can't do this.

  336. And they had a monopoly.

  337. By the way,

  338. it was the high priest

  339. and his family

  340. that were the beneficiaries

  341. of this legislation

  342. that meant that

  343. in the temple

  344. only those lambs

  345. and goats

  346. and doves

  347. and whatever else

  348. that had been koshered,

  349. right, kosher,

  350. were allowed to be sold.

  351. And so here we find

  352. in verse 15,

  353. Jesus comes in,

  354. he makes a whip

  355. of cords

  356. and he drove them

  357. all out of the temple.

  358. Do you get the picture?

  359. Now stop just for a minute

  360. because I want to correct

  361. what may be happening

  362. in your mind.

  363. You might be thinking

  364. that Jesus made

  365. this great big bull whip,

  366. you know,

  367. you know,

  368. out the door they went.

  369. The Greek word

  370. talks about

  371. a whip

  372. that was made out

  373. of just the normal cordage.

  374. How many of you

  375. have ever baled hay?

  376. Hay balers.

  377. Basically,

  378. that is the word

  379. that is used.

  380. It's just the common string

  381. that was used

  382. for kind of

  383. keeping the animal

  384. in check

  385. when you were taking it in

  386. to where it was going

  387. to have its throat cut,

  388. you know.

  389. Now by the way,

  390. the animal did not know

  391. what was coming

  392. so it was like

  393. just lead it along

  394. with a little string

  395. and you'll get it there.

  396. Jesus took some

  397. of these strings,

  398. picked them up,

  399. probably just walking around

  400. just kind of stewing,

  401. you know,

  402. picking them up,

  403. grabbing this one,

  404. grabbing that one

  405. and he kind of

  406. put them together

  407. and he let people know

  408. that this was not

  409. going to do.

  410. We sometimes have

  411. this picture

  412. of Jesus MMA

  413. walking in

  414. to the temple

  415. and just putting

  416. the smack down

  417. on everybody

  418. and terrifying them

  419. with his physical presence.

  420. That's not true.

  421. What is it

  422. that frightened people?

  423. It was the holy righteousness

  424. of God himself

  425. indignant

  426. with the sin

  427. that he saw.

  428. I have to confess

  429. that

  430. we are all

  431. far too careless

  432. with sin,

  433. aren't we?

  434. All of us.

  435. And when you

  436. look here

  437. at Jesus

  438. in verse 15,

  439. it says that

  440. he drove them

  441. all out of the temple

  442. with the sheep

  443. and the oxen

  444. and he poured out

  445. the coins

  446. with the money changers

  447. and he overturned

  448. their tables

  449. and he told them

  450. who sold the pigeons,

  451. get them

  452. out of here.

  453. You have made

  454. my father's house

  455. a house of trade.

  456. By the way,

  457. in the synoptics,

  458. Jesus referred

  459. to the temple

  460. a different way

  461. and I think

  462. it's instructive.

  463. He said that

  464. my father's house

  465. is a house of prayer.

  466. Listen to me carefully.

  467. When people

  468. that profess

  469. to know Christ

  470. diminish the significance

  471. and the priority

  472. of prayer,

  473. there's something

  474. serious going on

  475. in their lives

  476. spiritually.

  477. Jesus walks in here

  478. and says,

  479. in essence,

  480. you guys have made

  481. a horrible mess

  482. of this situation.

  483. So why did Jesus

  484. do that?

  485. That's a fair question.

  486. How many of you

  487. figured that out?

  488. When you're trying

  489. to understand

  490. what the Bible

  491. is saying,

  492. one of the first

  493. questions to ask

  494. is what?

  495. Why?

  496. Why is this here?

  497. Well,

  498. when we think about it,

  499. I want you to turn

  500. back in your Bible.

  501. You are there in John,

  502. but just go back

  503. a little bit.

  504. Don't have to go

  505. very far.

  506. Go to Malachi chapter 3.

    Malachi 3 chapter mention

  507. Malachi chapter 3.

    Malachi 3 chapter mention

  508. In Malachi chapter 3,

    Malachi 3:1

  509. verse 1 and 2,

  510. we find

  511. prophetic utterance

  512. about Christ's coming.

  513. Behold,

  514. I send my messenger,

  515. that's John the Baptist,

  516. and he will prepare

  517. the way before me.

  518. And the Lord

  519. whom you seek

  520. will suddenly come

  521. to his,

  522. what?

  523. Underline it in your Bible.

  524. Temple.

  525. And the messenger

  526. of the covenant

  527. in whom you delight,

  528. behold,

  529. he is coming,

  530. says the Lord.

  531. But who can endure

  532. the day of his coming

  533. and who can stand

  534. when he appears?

  535. For he is like

  536. a refiner's fire

  537. and like fuller's soap.

  538. You know what I'm saying?

  539. When Christ comes

  540. in his righteousness

  541. and his holiness,

  542. all will be

  543. profoundly humbled

  544. because of the darkness

  545. and the wickedness

  546. of their heart.

  547. we'll eventually get

  548. to John chapter 8

    John 8 chapter mention

  549. and there are going

  550. to be some

  551. who may dispute

  552. whether or not

  553. that is in the earliest

  554. manuscripts.

  555. I fully accept it,

  556. but you'll remember

  557. that when Jesus

  558. had the Pharisees

  559. and the priests

  560. bring up the woman

  561. who was caught

  562. in adultery

  563. and said,

  564. shall we stone her?

  565. Remember how they all

  566. scattered when he said,

  567. hey,

  568. the one that's without sin

  569. can throw the first stone

  570. and they all scattered.

  571. Beloved,

  572. when the convicting power

  573. of the Holy Spirit

  574. is at work,

  575. we understand

  576. that there is an effect

  577. upon the life

  578. of those who are sinful.

  579. And so,

  580. when you think

  581. about Jesus coming,

  582. we have two little

  583. kind of pictures.

  584. We have Jesus

  585. at the wedding feast

  586. and he's doing

  587. this little thing

  588. on the side

  589. with wine.

  590. But now,

  591. we have Jesus

  592. in the temple

  593. and I want you

  594. to understand

  595. that as he walks

  596. into the temple,

  597. there was no little

  598. soft syrupy

  599. little voice saying,

  600. I hope you guys

  601. are getting along

  602. and making a good profit.

  603. It was like clean house.

  604. He came to confront sin

  605. and fulfill prophecy.

  606. How did Jesus

  607. do this?

  608. How did he clean up?

  609. I mean,

  610. stop and think with me

  611. just for a moment.

  612. If you kind of

  613. think forward

  614. into the book of Acts,

  615. you'll remember

  616. that all it took

  617. was an accusation

  618. that Paul the Apostle

  619. had brought Gentiles

  620. into the inner part

  621. of the temple

  622. and they had a riot

  623. that brought in

  624. Roman soldiers.

  625. Jerusalem was a hotbed

  626. of rebellion.

  627. and anything

  628. that you know

  629. about the ancient world

  630. in particular

  631. there in Jerusalem

  632. is that they could

  633. get pretty fired up

  634. in a moment

  635. and really go ballistic

  636. about almost anything

  637. and for one man

  638. to clean house

  639. in the temple,

  640. it's worthy for us

  641. to ask

  642. just what was it

  643. that Jesus did?

  644. I want you to understand

  645. that he and his

  646. absolute holiness

  647. and righteousness

  648. brought the issue

  649. of the personal sin

  650. of those who were involved

  651. in what was going on

  652. to the forefront

  653. and that wave

  654. of shame and guilt

  655. swept through the crowd

  656. and they were all quieted

  657. in the presence

  658. of Christ.

  659. I want to assure you

  660. there will be a day

  661. when the brassiest

  662. of liar,

  663. the most arrogant fool

  664. and the angriest

  665. of men

  666. will be utterly overwhelmed

  667. at the holy presence

  668. of Jesus

  669. the judge

  670. of the whole earth.

  671. And as you think

  672. about this setting

  673. I think it's appropriate

  674. for us as believers

  675. those who know Christ

  676. to recognize

  677. that while Jesus

  678. loves us unconditionally

  679. and we are so blessed

  680. by the richness

  681. of his grace

  682. we who have been

  683. so richly forgiven

  684. should not be a people

  685. that are careless

  686. with sin.

  687. Would you agree with that?

  688. Well I want you

  689. to recognize

  690. glory challenged.

  691. I love what comes next.

  692. Look at that part

  693. if you will.

  694. there in verse 18

  695. so the Jews

  696. said to him

  697. what sign

  698. do you show us

  699. for doing these things?

  700. I can't help

  701. but think about

  702. the pastor

  703. and the princess bride

  704. at this moment

  705. it's like

  706. what a jerk.

  707. Okay

  708. forgive me

  709. I know

  710. some of you

  711. have not watched

  712. that classic

  713. and go home

  714. and do it

  715. but anyway

  716. here are the priests

  717. and the rabbis

  718. that kind of come up

  719. you know

  720. waddling up

  721. you know

  722. and there they are

  723. in their regalia

  724. you know what I'm talking about?

  725. I mean

  726. they had their robes on

  727. and by the way

  728. something about the priest's robes

  729. were pretty spectacular

  730. I mean

  731. it showed your rank

  732. I mean

  733. oh

  734. that's the high priest

  735. how can you tell?

  736. well look

  737. you know

  738. the average yokel

  739. over there

  740. is wearing something

  741. that just costs

  742. $3,000

  743. but the high priest

  744. he's decked out

  745. in jewels

  746. and blah blah blah

  747. and here they come

  748. kind of waddling out

  749. in the front of you

  750. we gave you the right

  751. to do this

  752. and who are they

  753. standing in front of?

  754. Jesus

  755. now remember

  756. our idea of Jesus

  757. is ill informed

  758. we either have this idea

  759. of a wuss

  760. or we have this idea

  761. of Mr. Smackdown MMA

  762. you know

  763. it depends

  764. and I have to tell you

  765. if you read the book

  766. of Isaiah

  767. it tells us

  768. that he was nothing

  769. spectacular

  770. just ordinary

  771. there he was

  772. standing in

  773. ordinary clothes

  774. by the way

  775. it's no accident

  776. that evangelical

  777. preachers

  778. are not all about

  779. finery

  780. Connie

  781. where are you Connie

  782. there you are

  783. Connie throws away

  784. a magazine

  785. periodically

  786. that talks about

  787. robes for pastors

  788. right

  789. throw it in the trash

  790. I don't need one

  791. the one thing

  792. I want you to remember

  793. is the authority

  794. and the sufficiency

  795. of the word of God

  796. and there is Jesus

  797. standing with simplicity

  798. and he announces

  799. to those

  800. who ask him

  801. what authority

  802. do you have

  803. to do what you've done

  804. in cleansing

  805. the temple

  806. he'd exposed

  807. sin for what it is

  808. and what sign

  809. did he give them

  810. let's look

  811. let's pick up on this

  812. because it's glory

  813. confirmed

  814. you look there

  815. in the passage

  816. and Jesus answered

  817. them

  818. verse 19

  819. and he said

  820. destroy this temple

  821. and in three days

  822. I will raise it up

  823. the truth of the matter

  824. is that the Jewish leaders

  825. would end up

  826. having Jesus crucified

  827. and we understand

  828. that in this

  829. declaration

  830. what he is saying

  831. is that

  832. you're going to kill me

  833. and three days after that

  834. I'm going to come out

  835. of the grave

  836. in the face

  837. of what Jesus

  838. had prophesied

  839. I am struck

  840. when I turn over

  841. and I want you to look at it

  842. just for a moment

  843. Matthew chapter 27

    Matthew 27 chapter mention

  844. go back

  845. for a second

  846. Matthew chapter 27

    Matthew 27:63

  847. verse 63

  848. in this passage

  849. we find that Jesus

  850. is already dead

  851. and buried

  852. and those people

  853. who were involved

  854. in putting him to death

  855. have some anxiety

  856. the next day

  857. that is after

  858. the day of the preparation

  859. the chief priests

  860. and the Pharisees

  861. gather before Pilate

  862. you can hear them again

  863. with that little whiny voice

  864. sir

  865. we remember how

  866. that imposter said

  867. which he was still

  868. when he was still alive

  869. after three days

  870. I will rise

  871. you know

  872. you can hear that

  873. right

  874. no stop

  875. and so

  876. by the way

  877. they're the ones

  878. who paid attention

  879. to the prophecy

  880. the disciples

  881. what were they doing

  882. hey

  883. he's coming back

  884. three days

  885. it's alright

  886. he'll be out of the grave

  887. it's good news

  888. no

  889. but the Jews

  890. were a little bit nervous

  891. now

  892. they

  893. were having

  894. all kinds of trouble

  895. with the absolute reality

  896. of Jesus'

  897. miracles

  898. do you follow that

  899. remember

  900. when he raised

  901. Lazarus

  902. from the dead

  903. do you know

  904. what they were thinking

  905. about doing

  906. with Lazarus

  907. who knows

  908. raise your hand

  909. if you do

  910. they were going

  911. to put him

  912. to death

  913. I mean hey

  914. if you don't like

  915. the information

  916. get out

  917. get rid of it

  918. pretend that you lost it

  919. or that you shredded it

  920. you know

  921. it's like gone

  922. Lazarus

  923. who's he

  924. and they

  925. the unbelieving Jews

  926. were a little more sensitive

  927. to the power

  928. that he had

  929. well I want you to know

  930. that Jesus would indeed

  931. rise on the third day

  932. and his resurrection

  933. would be the central sign

  934. to all the world

  935. that salvation

  936. was in his name

  937. and work alone

  938. I want you to turn

  939. in your Bible

  940. to Romans chapter 1

    Romans 1:4

  941. verse 4

  942. as we wrap things up

  943. this morning

  944. and pay attention

  945. to the clarity

  946. of what Jesus

  947. tells us

  948. about his resurrection

  949. Romans chapter 1

    Romans 1:4

  950. verse 4

  951. how do we know

  952. that Jesus

  953. is the son of God

  954. remember

  955. John chapter 20

    John 20:31

  956. verse 31

  957. where Ethan recited

  958. last week

  959. right

  960. these things are written

  961. that you might believe

  962. that Jesus is the son of God

  963. and believing

  964. that you might have

  965. life everlasting

  966. eternal life

  967. and was declared

  968. to be

  969. the son of God

  970. in power

  971. according to the spirit

  972. of holiness

  973. by his resurrection

  974. from the dead

  975. Jesus Christ

  976. our Lord

  977. how do you know

  978. Jesus is coming back

  979. he rose from the dead

  980. how do I know

  981. that my sins

  982. are completely forgiven

  983. because he rose

  984. from the dead

  985. how do I know

  986. that he is going

  987. to be the judge

  988. of the whole earth

  989. he rose from the dead

  990. how do I know

  991. that he is going

  992. to be the Lord

  993. and sovereign

  994. of all of creation

  995. and every knee

  996. shall bow

  997. and worship him

  998. with glory

  999. and adoration

  1000. or spend eternity

  1001. in the absolute

  1002. horror of hell

  1003. because of the resurrection

  1004. so let's think

  1005. what we learned

  1006. from this passage

  1007. this morning

1008. I want you to recognize

  1009. that Christ's love

  1010. involves

  1011. confronting sin

  1012. one of the troubles

  1013. that we have today

  1014. is that we have

  1015. a tendency

  1016. of calling sin

  1017. by all different

  1018. kinds of names

  1019. other than what it

  1020. really is

  1021. hey

  1022. do you realize

  1023. there are probably

  1024. people making a living

  1025. trying to figure out

  1026. new ways to justify

  1027. what you're doing

1028. but sin is still sin

1029. and there is no remedy

  1030. for sin

  1031. except for the finished

  1032. work of Christ

1033. I want you to understand

  1034. also that Christ's

  1035. zeal

  1036. is for his father's

  1037. glory alone

  1038. you know

  1039. there are some things

  1040. that we all get

  1041. worked up about

  1042. that really don't amount

1043. to a hill of beans

  1044. in eternity

  1045. and we do well

  1046. to remind ourselves

  1047. of that

  1048. finally I want you

  1049. to understand

  1050. that Christ's

  1051. resurrection

  1052. is a declaration

  1053. of victory

  1054. over sin

  1055. and also the certainty

  1056. of judgment

  1057. and so we

  1058. who are believers

1059. look to the empty tomb

  1060. and we say

  1061. hey listen

  1062. it is finished

  1063. and my salvation

  1064. is settled

  1065. and I have confidence

  1066. because Christ Jesus

  1067. rose again

  1068. from the dead

1069. and if you are here

  1070. this morning

  1071. and you don't know

  1072. Christ

1073. I want to assure you

  1074. that judgment

  1075. will come

  1076. and the one

  1077. who died

  1078. and paid the penalty

  1079. for your sins

1080. will also be the one

  1081. who judges you

  1082. for your willing

  1083. rejection

  1084. of the clear

  1085. gospel truth

  1086. that Christ came

  1087. into the world

  1088. to let people know

  1089. the desperate condition

  1090. of their soul

  1091. is personal sin

  1092. and the satisfaction

  1093. for that penalty

  1094. of debt

  1095. that my sin

  1096. has created

  1097. is the blood

  1098. of Christ

  1099. shed for me

  1100. you know

  1101. here's something

1102. I want you to understand

  1103. the Jews

  1104. knew exactly

  1105. who they were

  1106. dealing with

  1107. and they rejected

  1108. do you understand that

1109. and I want to appeal

  1110. to you this morning

1111. if you are sitting here

1112. and you do not know Christ

  1113. that you plead

  1114. with the Holy Spirit

1115. to give you a broken heart

  1116. to trust in Christ

  1117. and if you're here

  1118. this morning

  1119. and you know Christ

  1120. as your Savior

  1121. I would appeal

  1122. to you this morning

  1123. that what you do

  1124. what you do

1125. is that you cry out

  1126. and say

1127. Lord give me a desire

  1128. for holiness

  1129. and purity

  1130. and my life

  1131. makes a difference

  1132. let's bow our heads

  1133. in prayer

  1134. and as we're praying

  1135. we'd ask John

1136. to come up with the band

1137. and I'm going to ask

  1138. that the candidate

  1139. for baptism

  1140. come forward this morning

  1141. so we can celebrate

  1142. the joy of Christ

  1143. in baptism

  1144. you pray with me

  1145. with your heads bowed

  1146. gracious Father

  1147. I am thankful

  1148. this morning

1149. for the glory of Christ

  1150. that he indeed

  1151. is the Savior

  1152. of the world

1153. thank you for the clarity

  1154. with which

  1155. this little reminder

  1156. in scripture

  1157. lets us know

  1158. that Christ Jesus

  1159. came into the world

  1160. to save sinners

  1161. but it also involves

  1162. telling people

  1163. there's a problem

  1164. in your life

  1165. and you can't solve

  1166. it yourself

  1167. Jesus came

  1168. to pay the penalty

  1169. for our sins

  1170. that as it says

  1171. in the scripture

  1172. whosoever believeth

  1173. in him

  1174. shall not be ashamed

  1175. I pray for those

  1176. who are here today

  1177. that need Christ

  1178. as their Savior

  1179. that this morning

  1180. where they sit

  1181. their heart

  1182. would be drawn

  1183. to the cross

  1184. and they would believe

  1185. in him

  1186. I ask this

  1187. in your precious name

  1188. Amen

  1189. Thank you Gary

  1190. Stand together

  1191. Stand together
