  1. I would like you to turn in your Bibles this morning to John chapter 3.

    John 3 chapter mention

  2. ! And as we get started, I remind you that actually this morning you're going to be praying for several people.

  3. One is for Caleb as he is ministering somewhere in New York.

  4. I'm not persuaded where it is. I just know he's out there somewhere.

  5. And God knows, and you just pray, and we're trusting that the Holy Spirit helps Caleb to preach with clarity,

  6. with simplicity, and with passion that lifts up the glory of Christ in a very troubling environment.

  7. And I want you to know that you are going to be part of kind of setting a milepost in Caleb's ministry and his life.

  8. He will without question remember this Sunday.

  9. And I want him to also remember what it is to preach with the prayers of people that are absent from him

  10. and lifting him up before the throne that he can know what it is to do it under the power of the Spirit of God.

  11. Well, if I would ask you to do that for Caleb, guess who else I'm going to plead for?

  12. That's me.

  13. I trust you'll do that.

  14. John chapter 3, verse 1.

    John 3:1

  15. Now, there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.

  16. This man came to Jesus by night and said to him,

  17. Rabbi, we know that you're a teacher come from God,

  18. for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.

  19. Jesus answered him,

  20. Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

  21. Nicodemus said to him,

  22. How can a man be born when he's old?

  23. Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?

  24. Jesus answered,

  25. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  26. unless one is born of water and of the Spirit,

  27. he cannot enter the kingdom of God.

  28. Our Father,

  29. for us this morning,

  30. our prayer is a confession, first of all, of our own frailty and inadequacy,

  31. a recognition that by our own enabling and our flesh,

  32. there is nothing we can do that is of eternal significance.

  33. And our desire is that this morning,

  34. the Lord Jesus Christ,

  35. who enjoys the worship of angels in heaven,

  36. and someday of all the redeemed,

  37. would be the one that is lifted up this morning by your Spirit.

  38. We understand from John, as we will see later in our studies,

  39. Lord willing,

  40. that the ministry of the Spirit includes bringing attention to the Lord Jesus,

  41. and we pray that you would do that today.

  42. I pray, Father, for Caleb,

  43. that today his preaching would be anointed and strengthened by the Spirit of God,

  44. and that in retrospect, as he looks back,

  45. he would say,

  46. Wow, that was something that God did.

  47. That people would come to Christ there in New York.

  48. That people would have hearts that are comforted and encouraged,

  49. but also convicted and sobered.

  50. I pray, Lord, also for our fellowship this morning,

  51. as we sit under the teaching of the Word of God,

  52. that those who are here that do not know Christ

  53. would be drawn by grace to see the absolute despair of their soul

  54. and the inability they have of saving themselves.

  55. Give to them a holy terror of what eternity without Christ will be,

  56. and draw them to find in Jesus Christ the only hope

  57. in this life and the life to come.

  58. Amen.

  59. Well, as we take this passage,

  60. we are in our process of moving through the book of John,

  61. and remember that John chapter 20, verse 31,

    John 20:31

  62. gives us a thematic overview of what this book is all about,

  63. and it helps to remember.

  64. It always helps to kind of have the central goal in mind

  65. because we do have a tendency of kind of getting lost in the weeds.

  66. Would you agree with me?

  67. Sometimes caught up in all the little details,

  68. and we forget the overarching theme.

  69. It's important to remember,

  70. this book was written to make it clear

  71. from the evidence that is provided

  72. that Jesus is the Son of God,

  73. so that knowing that fact,

  74. you may come to faith believing on Him

  75. and have everlasting life.

  76. As we have worked so far through the book,

  77. we've kind of come through that opening statement

  78. in the prelude in which we are reminded

  79. that Jesus indeed is the Son of God,

  80. the Creator of the universe,

  81. and the One who by all things were made,

  82. and the One who is the light and the life of God.

  83. We've also seen the reminder of the impact

  84. that He had at the very start,

  85. doing a very kind of small little miracle

  86. in a wedding in which He turned the water into wine.

  87. Later, we find that as you work your way through

  88. cleansing the temple,

  89. and subsequent to that,

  90. there were a lot of people that they believed in Him,

  91. they believed in the evidence that He was providing,

  92. but their belief was not a belief

  93. that drew them to genuine conversion and faith.

  94. And so it makes sense that as we are working our way

  95. through the book of John,

  96. on the heels of the statement that we have in John chapter 2,

    John 2 chapter mention

  97. that there were a lot of people that believed,

  98. but it really didn't do anything,

  99. we now come to a very interesting little picture

  100. about what saving faith really comes down to be.

  101. And as we open our passage this morning,

  102. we find Nicodemus,

  103. and I would say that probably John chapter 3

    John 3 chapter mention

  104. is one of those famous chapters in the Bible.

  105. Most everybody knows John 3, 16.

  106. You've got that one.

  107. And we know the story of Nicodemus,

  108. kind of the background to what that little verse is all about.

  109. As you look here,

  110. you find Nicodemus coming to Jesus,

  111. and in essence,

  112. what you're coming to grips with

  113. is a guy who had an empty heart.

  114. He had an empty heart.

  115. That's what we're looking at.

  116. It tells us here that Nicodemus,

  117. the ruler of the Jews,

  118. he came to Jesus by night,

  119. and he said,

  120. hey, we know that you're a teacher come from God

  121. because no one could do these signs that you do

  122. unless God is with him.

  123. As we kind of step back a little bit

  124. to understand the context of this,

  125. I want you to understand

  126. that at the heart of all the religions of the world,

  127. all the systems of faith in the world,

  128. there are only two basic concepts.

  129. You've heard me say this,

  130. but I want to drive it home

  131. because it has bearing on our lesson this morning.

  132. One system of belief

  133. is of the persuasion

  134. that men by their effort

  135. may work their way up the ladder into heaven.

  136. And we bump into those people all the time, don't we?

  137. We say, so what gives you confidence

  138. that you're going to be in heaven?

  139. Well, I'm a pretty good person.

  140. Or on the other side,

  141. we have those people who say,

  142. well, I'm not really sure.

  143. I'm hoping that my good outweighs my bad.

  144. Or you have people say,

  145. well, I hope God grades on the curve.

  146. And whatever you're dealing with there,

  147. you're listening to someone who has the idea

  148. that salvation really must be something

  149. that comes about because of human effort.

  150. On the other hand,

  151. the Bible teaches us clearly

  152. that salvation is not something that happens

  153. because of human effort.

  154. It is clear in the Scripture

  155. that salvation happens

  156. because of God's grace in His ministry

  157. in the lives of broken and ruined sinners.

  158. How do people come to Christ?

  159. By the way,

  160. how many of you know that the name Jesus

  161. actually tells you the fact

  162. about how salvation happens?

  163. Jesus means what?

  164. Jehovah is salvation.

  165. It doesn't say that Jehovah helps with salvation.

  166. It says, hey, salvation is something God does.

  167. And so as we deal with Nicodemus,

  168. as we open up this passage,

  169. we find here a man that,

  170. driven by the emptiness of his heart,

  171. he comes to Jesus.

  172. And I want you to understand something

  173. about Nicodemus that we know

  174. from the very beginning.

  175. This man was very serious about doing his best.

  176. He wasn't one of those guys

  177. that really wasn't all that interested

  178. in how his performance was.

  179. He was a guy who checked on his grades all the time.

  180. How many of you remember people like that in school?

  181. They bothered me marginally.

  182. What I mean by that is that,

  183. well, I figured they were just

  184. in a different parallel universe

  185. and I wasn't all that concerned about them,

  186. but I did.

  187. Well, I have a 98 in math.

  188. What does that look like?

  189. You know, it's like, forget that one.

  190. Nicodemus was really all over how he was doing.

  191. He was a very religious

  192. and very conscientious person.

  193. And we know that because he was a Pharisee.

  194. That's what it tells us.

  195. Now, we use the term Pharisee

  196. kind of as a little dig at somebody.

  197. Oh, you're a Pharisee.

  198. I want you to understand

  199. that the Pharisees were pretty serious people

  200. about religion and behavior.

  201. They were people who had

  202. all different kinds of rules

  203. about how to keep the Sabbath.

  204. And one that I found most interesting was,

  205. here's the deal.

  206. If a chicken laid an egg on the Sabbath,

  207. I'm serious,

  208. you were allowed to eat that egg

  209. so long as you planned

  210. to execute the chicken the next day

  211. for breaking the Sabbath.

  212. Now, the logic is just irrefutable.

  213. You follow that, don't you?

  214. Let me say it again so you get it.

  215. If a chicken laid an egg on the Sabbath,

  216. you were allowed to execute that chicken

  217. and eat that chicken.

  218. Now, how did you eat chicken

  219. if you didn't cook it?

  220. I haven't figured that one out.

  221. But they were, okay,

  222. you could kill, you could eat the egg.

  223. I don't know, forget it.

  224. Anyway, here's the deal.

  225. You were allowed to have that egg

  226. so long as the chicken

  227. was going to be slaughtered

  228. the next day for breaking the Sabbath.

  229. Do you understand?

  230. If you were to go to the web today,

  231. and I did this earlier in the last week,

  232. I went to the web

  233. and kind of checked on

  234. what kind of rules would be affecting me

  235. if I were a Jew today.

  236. And here's the deal.

  237. If you are an Orthodox,

  238. a practicing Jew,

  239. serious about keeping the Sabbath,

  240. and you turn a light switch on,

  241. on the Sabbath,

  242. you're not allowed to turn it off.

  243. Got that?

  244. You may not cook.

  245. You may not turn on electricity.

  246. And so one of the things

  247. that a lot of times

  248. would happen in a Jewish home

  249. is that come around

  250. about Friday evening,

  251. just at the right time,

  252. they'd go through the house

  253. and flick on the lights

  254. that they wanted on

  255. for their next 24 hours.

  256. And they would leave them on.

  257. So when you go to sleep at night,

  258. guess what you do?

  259. How many of you sleep

  260. with those things over your eyes

  261. so that you pretend that it's dark?

  262. There are lots of little rules

  263. that go with,

  264. you cannot drive a car

  265. to the synagogue.

  266. And so how many of you

  267. have been in Cleveland

  268. and see the herd of them,

  269. the large group of them

  270. walking towards the synagogue?

  271. The reason they're doing it

  272. is that they're not allowed.

  273. Driving burns gasoline

  274. and anything that involves fire

  275. is wrong.

  276. The Pharisees were very,

  277. very, very particular

  278. about keeping all the rules.

  279. And it tells us here

  280. that Nicodemus,

  281. a Pharisee,

  282. was a ruler of the Jews.

  283. What that means

  284. is that he had kind of

  285. worked to the top

  286. of the food chain.

  287. Furthermore,

  288. we understand

  289. that being a ruler

  290. of the Jews

  291. meant that he was

  292. one of the Sanhedrin,

  293. the 70,

  294. that were involved

  295. in making kind of legal

  296. and cultural decisions

  297. for the Jewish nation.

  298. He was at the top of it.

  299. His spiritual

  300. or his religious discipline

  301. was so well-regulated

  302. that other people

  303. paid attention to him

  304. and said,

  305. hey, Nicodemus is a model.

  306. That's what you're supposed

  307. to be like.

  308. Now, when you look

  309. in John chapter 7, verse 50,

    John 7:50

  310. where it tells us

  311. that he was part

  312. of the Sanhedrin,

  313. we get the idea

  314. that he was at least

  315. willing to stand up

  316. for what he understood

  317. about the truth

  318. and he appealed

  319. that Jesus

  320. should not be judged

  321. prematurely,

  322. but on the basis

  323. of what he actually

  324. had done.

  325. So I want you

  326. to understand

  327. that Nicodemus,

  328. as we think about this guy,

  329. was a guy who had worked

  330. very hard for a long time

  331. and he was top in.

  332. Despite being respected

  333. by everybody

  334. that he was around,

  335. Nicodemus

  336. was really not satisfied.

  337. How do we know that?

  338. We know that because

  339. Nicodemus came to Jesus

  340. and he came,

  341. in essence,

  342. asking a question

  343. about spiritual issues.

  344. And we know that

  345. he asked that question

  346. because Jesus,

  347. as we saw in

  348. the previous verses

  349. in John chapter 2,

    John 2 chapter mention

  350. understanding the heart of man,

  351. he knew what was really

  352. going on inside.

  353. And so I want you

  354. to recognize that

  355. even though Nicodemus

  356. had all these benefits

  357. and accolades

  358. and he was accepted

  359. by the culture

  360. that he was in,

  361. he sensed his loss

  362. and he came to Jesus

  363. looking for spiritual help.

  364. That's why he was there.

  365. Some have made

  366. quite a bit

  367. out of the fact

  368. that Nicodemus

  369. came to Jesus

  370. at night.

  371. And I do want to take

  372. just a minute

  373. and explain something.

  374. If the Bible

  375. doesn't tell us

  376. something,

  377. we are doing

  378. no more than

  379. mere speculation

  380. if we try to figure out

  381. why he came

  382. to Jesus at night.

  383. How many of you

  384. understand what I just said?

  385. If we don't have

  386. the clear evidence,

  387. speculation

  388. is just that.

  389. In fact,

  390. speculation sometimes

  391. when it is declared

  392. to be fact

  393. can become frustrating

  394. and confusing

  395. and misleading.

  396. Truth of the matter

  397. is we don't know

  398. why Nicodemus

  399. came to Jesus

  400. at night.

  401. He could have had

  402. a long work day.

  403. Or whatever the reason,

  404. we just find that

  405. there he was

  406. in front of Jesus

  407. and he was coming

  408. to Jesus

  409. because he recognized

  410. that Jesus

  411. was a source

  412. of spiritual insight.

  413. And how do we know that?

  414. We know

  415. that you are a teacher

  416. come from God.

  417. And how do we know

  418. that you're a teacher

  419. come from God?

  420. Because no one

  421. can do these signs

  422. that you do

  423. unless God

  424. is with him.

  425. He recognized

  426. the evidence

  427. that Jesus'

  428. signs provided.

  429. I've got to tell you

  430. something about Nicodemus.

  431. I respect him

  432. because he

  433. was willing

  434. to recognize

  435. the emptiness

  436. of his soul

  437. and he was willing

  438. to do something

  439. about it

  440. at least

  441. in asking questions.

  442. Do you understand that?

  443. It's one thing

  444. to be convicted

  445. about things

  446. that are going on

  447. in your life

  448. and not do

  449. anything about it.

  450. That's wrong.

  451. Here was Nicodemus.

  452. He was convicted.

  453. He sensed

  454. the emptiness

  455. of his heart.

  456. He recognized

  457. that even though

  458. he was at the top

  459. of other people's opinions,

  460. he really wasn't

  461. inside

  462. what he needed

  463. to be spiritually

  464. and there was a vacuum

  465. and there was an emptiness.

  466. emptiness.

  467. So I've got to tell you

  468. if you're sitting here

  469. this morning

  470. and you have

  471. an emptiness

  472. in your soul,

  473. if you have

  474. a secret sense

  475. of the darkness

  476. of your heart,

  477. if you have

  478. no confidence

  479. about where

  480. your eternity

  481. will be spent

  482. and you are

  483. struggling this morning

  484. with the reality

  485. of the burden

  486. of sin in your life,

  487. I would appeal

  488. to you,

  489. at least do

  490. what Nicodemus did,

  491. go find Jesus.

  492. To sit there

  493. in the sourness

  494. and the bitterness

  495. and the hopelessness

  496. and the despair

  497. of your heart

  498. that is at this moment

  499. under the convicting power

  500. of the Spirit of God

  501. is wrong.

  502. Do something.

  503. I appreciate the fact

  504. that Nicodemus

  505. was willing to confess

  506. that he had

  507. a spiritual problem

  508. and it was one

  509. he couldn't fix.

  510. And so I would plead

  511. with you this morning

  512. as you sit here,

  513. if you are here today

  514. and there is a spiritual issue

  515. going in your life

  516. and you recognize

  517. it's not something

  518. you can solve,

  519. at least be humble

  520. and humble yourself

  521. and come to him

  522. and ask for help.

  523. Jesus, I need help.

  524. Let's look at a second thing

  525. this morning

  526. as we look at the passage

  527. and recognize

  528. the divine remedy.

  529. Jesus,

  530. having Nicodemus

  531. come to him

  532. and says,

  533. hey, listen,

  534. you're a teacher

  535. come from God

  536. and I know it

  537. because of these signs.

  538. Instead of Jesus saying,

  539. well, you know what?

  540. I'm glad you picked up

  541. on those things.

  542. Jesus doesn't respond

  543. according to the input

  544. or the comments

  545. that Nicodemus brought.

  546. In fact,

  547. what we have him do

  548. is go on a completely

  549. different tack

  550. and Nicodemus

  551. didn't pose

  552. their actual question

  553. but we find that

  554. Jesus addressed it

  555. quite clearly.

  556. You see,

  557. Jesus cut to the heart

  558. of Nicodemus' concern

  559. because what he said

  560. was this

  561. and allow a little bit

  562. of liberty here

  563. as I kind of reverse

  564. the order here

  565. for you to think about.

  566. Here's what Jesus said

  567. in essence

  568. as you look at verse 4

  569. or 5.

  570. You're not going to heaven

  571. unless you start over

  572. by being born again

  573. and that's a fact.

  574. You're not going to heaven

  575. unless you start over again

  576. by being born again

  577. and that's a fact.

  578. Look at the verse.

  579. Truly, truly,

  580. that's the fact part, right?

  581. Anytime the teacher

  582. in your class

  583. would say

  584. this is important,

  585. even the average scholar

  586. does what

  587. with that information?

  588. What did you do?

  589. You do a circle around it

  590. and you said

  591. this will be on the,

  592. on what?

  593. The test.

  594. You paid attention.

  595. So when Jesus said

  596. truly, truly,

  597. that was like saying

  598. this is, get this.

  599. This is important.

  600. This is very important.

  601. And so as you stop

  602. and look at this statement,

  603. Jesus makes it clear

  604. what I'm going to say next

  605. is significant

  606. and you'd better tune up

  607. and pay attention.

  608. Secondly,

  609. he makes that very

  610. interesting statement,

  611. you must be born again.

  612. The Greek word

  613. that is used there

  614. in verse 3

  615. and I'm not going to

  616. belabor the point here

  617. but it could be taken

  618. two different ways

  619. neither of which

  620. changed the meaning of it

  621. and both actually help

  622. drive a point home.

  623. For one,

  624. that word again

  625. can mean to do again,

  626. second time,

  627. over again.

  628. It could also mean

  629. from above.

  630. And in both cases,

  631. the issue is that

  632. something pretty dramatic

  633. needs to take place

  634. in the life of the person

  635. who is concerned about

  636. what's happening

  637. in their life spiritually.

  638. There are some of you

  639. sitting here this morning

  640. that the truth of the matter

  641. is you've not believed

  642. in Jesus Christ

  643. as your Savior.

  644. You've never come to faith

  645. and you have sat

  646. and listened

  647. to the preaching

  648. and the announcement

  649. of the word of God

  650. and the undeniable declaration

  651. that this is indeed

  652. the Son of God

  653. who's come into the world

  654. to save sinners

  655. and in practical terms

  656. as you sit there

  657. and refuse that truth.

  658. In essence,

  659. what you're saying

  660. is Jesus is a liar

  661. because what he says

  662. about himself

  663. is not true.

  664. It is a weighty moment

  665. to realize

  666. that Jesus puts us

  667. on the spot

  668. of saying yes or no

  669. to who he is

  670. and what he's here to do.

  671. And it's appropriate

  672. to understand that.

  673. Jesus cuts right to it.

  674. He says,

  675. listen,

  676. let me tell you something.

  677. Unless you're born again,

  678. you cannot see

  679. the kingdom of God.

  680. Furthermore,

  681. apart from the new birth,

  682. in essence,

  683. what he is saying

  684. is no one's going to heaven.

  685. Apart from the new birth,

  686. no one is going to heaven.

  687. I am stunned today

  688. by the number of people

  689. that I bump into

  690. that are professing

  691. evangelical Christians

  692. and what I mean

  693. by that mouthful

  694. is there are people

  695. who say,

  696. well,

  697. Jesus is the pretty

  698. important guy

  699. and I kind of believe

  700. what the Bible says

  701. but I don't believe

  702. in hell.

  703. I really think

  704. that at the end of the day,

  705. how many of you

  706. heard the phrase

  707. love wins?

  708. I have someone

  709. who I periodically

  710. read their posts

  711. and they keep on commenting

  712. about love wins

  713. and love wins

  714. and love wins

  715. and love wins

  716. and the implication

  717. is that at the end of the day

  718. when it's all said and done

  719. that God is not going

  720. to send anybody to hell.

  721. Let me help you

  722. understand something.

  723. The reason Christ Jesus

  724. came into the world

  725. was to satisfy

  726. the debt

  727. and the judgment

  728. that sin has created

  729. and the truth

  730. of the matter

  731. is that sin,

  732. any sin,

  733. every sin

  734. that I commit

  735. is against

  736. a holy God

  737. and His

  738. infinite glory

  739. makes even

  740. the smallest

  741. thing that I do

  742. infinitely offensive.

  743. And the satisfaction

  744. for that infinite offense

  745. is an infinite penalty.

  746. And God sent His Son,

  747. the Lord Jesus Christ,

  748. to pay

  749. that infinite price

  750. by dying

  751. in my place.

  752. And so when

  753. Jesus

  754. said to Nicodemus,

  755. you've got to be born again,

  756. you have to understand

  757. He was talking

  758. to a person

  759. who was at the top

  760. of the food chain,

  761. so to speak,

  762. religiously

  763. in Israel.

  764. And in essence,

  765. Jesus says to Nicodemus,

  766. you,

  767. who have your PhD

  768. in religion,

  769. have to start

  770. all over again.

  771. And Nicodemus says,

  772. what?

  773. Play out with

  774. what He says here.

  775. How can a man

  776. be born when he's old?

  777. Can he enter

  778. a second time

  779. into his mother's womb

  780. and be born?

  781. Some have

  782. taken this

  783. to mean

  784. that Nicodemus

  785. was kind of

  786. being a little sarcastic

  787. and taking

  788. what Jesus said

  789. and played it out

  790. a little bit

  791. with an edge.

  792. I don't know

  793. that at all.

  794. I think Nicodemus

  795. came with sincerity.

  796. He took the information

  797. that Jesus provided

  798. and he was completely

  799. blown away by it

  800. because his mind

  801. wasn't tracking

  802. in that range.

  803. It just wasn't there.

  804. And so he asked

  805. the obvious question,

  806. how can that happen?

  807. How can that happen?

  808. Then in verse 5,

  809. Jesus answered

  810. and said to him,

  811. truly, truly,

  812. I say to you,

  813. unless one is born again,

  814. or I said,

  815. sorry, verse 5,

  816. unless one is born

  817. of water and the spirit,

  818. he cannot enter

  819. the kingdom of God.

  820. Now, so I want you

  821. to understand

  822. what's being said here.

  823. Salvation cannot happen

  824. apart from the

  825. exclusive work of God.

  826. It's very interesting

  827. when you,

  828. how many of you

  829. understand what it is

  830. to take a text

  831. and preach what you

  832. want to say?

  833. Let me give you

  834. an illustration.

  835. Some have looked

  836. at this passage

  837. and thought

  838. that it referred

  839. to baptism.

  840. I mean,

  841. anytime you have water,

  842. some people think

  843. it means baptism.

  844. I've heard the story

  845. of a pastor

  846. who was really

  847. kind of big

  848. on preaching

  849. on baptism,

  850. and one day,

  851. he actually hit

  852. a passage

  853. where there was

  854. no water

  855. in any place

  856. in the text,

  857. and he says,

  858. now some of you

  859. may have noticed

  860. this passage

  861. does not refer

  862. water.

  863. He says,

  864. that brings up

  865. baptism.

  866. Sometimes you want

  867. to get wherever

  868. you're going

  869. to get where

  870. you want to go.

  871. And here is Jesus

  872. making the statement,

  873. you have to be born

  874. of water and the spirit,

  875. and I got to tell you,

  876. it has nothing to do

  877. with being born physically,

  878. and it has nothing

  879. to do with baptism.

  880. How many of you

  881. have study Bibles?

  882. Raise your hand

  883. and wave at me

  884. so I can see

  885. the study Bibles

  886. out here.

  887. Okay?

  888. Study Bibles

  889. are not bad tools.

  890. One of the problems

  891. with study Bibles

  892. is that they don't

  893. get everything right,

  894. but it's a starting place.

  895. The thing that is important

  896. as we look at this passage

  897. and we try to understand

  898. what does Jesus mean

  899. when he says water

  900. and the spirit,

  901. we have to remember

  902. that the best thing

  903. to help us understand

  904. the Bible

  905. is the Bible

  906. and the enabling

  907. of the spirit of God

  908. and the context.

  909. And by that I mean,

  910. who was Jesus talking to?

  911. He was talking to a guy

  912. who had his PhD

  913. in Old Testament theology

  914. and knew the scriptures

  915. backwards and forwards.

  916. Later on,

  917. he's going to say

  918. to Nicodemus,

  919. kind of a snort,

  920. you know,

  921. there's no snort

  922. in the text

  923. in case you're wondering,

  924. but it's like,

  925. don't you get it?

  926. Are you a teacher

  927. in Israel

  928. and don't know

  929. these things?

  930. Jesus expected

  931. Nicodemus

  932. to understand

  933. the Old Testament.

  934. Clearly,

  935. in Jewish thinking,

  936. baptism at best

  937. was not something

  938. that saved.

  939. Baptism was merely

  940. an outward evidence

  941. of something

  942. happened,

  943. that had happened

  944. in the heart.

  945. But,

  946. if you will turn

  947. in your Bible

  948. over to Ezekiel

    Ezekiel 36 chapter mention

  949. chapter 36,

  950. by the way,

  951. just notice,

  952. some of you may have

  953. cross-references

  954. over in the margin

  955. that says,

  956. go to Ezekiel

    Ezekiel 36 chapter mention

  957. chapter 36.

  958. And in this case,

  959. go there.

  960. Ezekiel

    Ezekiel 36 chapter mention

  961. chapter 36,

  962. and we're going

  963. to look at

  964. verse 25-27.

  965. What does the water

  966. refer to?

  967. I will sprinkle

  968. clean water

  969. on you,

  970. and you shall be

  971. clean from all

  972. your uncleanliness

  973. and from your

  974. idols.

  975. I will cleanse

  976. you,

  977. and I will give

  978. you a new heart

  979. and a new spirit

  980. I will put within

  981. you,

  982. and a new spirit

  983. I will put within

  984. you,

  985. and I will remove

  986. the heart of stone

  987. from your flesh

  988. and give you

  989. a heart of flesh.

  990. I will put my

  991. spirit within you

  992. and cause you

  993. to walk in my

  994. statutes and be

  995. careful to obey

  996. my rules.

  997. You see,

  998. when Jesus made

  999. this statement

  1000. to Nicodemus,

  1001. who'd come and

  1002. said,

  1003. hey, listen,

  1004. I've got a

  1005. spiritual problem

  1006. and we need to

  1007. do something about

  1008. this,

1009. or I need to do

  1010. something about it,

  1011. Jesus said,

  1012. hey,

  1013. this is not

  1014. something you can

  1015. just decide.

  1016. It's got to be

  1017. something that

  1018. somebody else does

  1019. for you.

  1020. And when he says

  1021. the water and the

  1022. spirit,

  1023. he was referring

  1024. to the ministry

  1025. of the spirit of

  1026. God in the heart

  1027. of the man who

  1028. recognizes

  1029. his desperate

  1030. condition and

  1031. his absolute

  1032. inability to

  1033. save himself.

  1034. Water and

  1035. spirit refer

  1036. not to the

  1037. physical part,

  1038. but they're

  1039. referring to

  1040. that which is

  1041. of the spirit's

  1042. work in a man's

  1043. life.

  1044. And so when

  1045. Jesus went on

  1046. there in verse

  1047. six,

  1048. that which is

  1049. born of the

  1050. flesh is flesh,

  1051. that which is

  1052. born of the

  1053. spirit is spirit,

  1054. what he was

  1055. saying is this,

  1056. is that

  1057. the human body

  1058. produces human,

  1059. mental,

  1060. physical results.

  1061. Only the spirit

  1062. of God can

  1063. produce spiritual

  1064. results.

  1065. How many of you

  1066. ever tried to

  1067. persuade people

  1068. into the kingdom

  1069. with all the

  1070. logic that you

  1071. possessed?

  1072. You ever tried

  1073. that?

  1074. How many of you

  1075. ever tried to

  1076. argue somebody

  1077. into the kingdom?

  1078. I remember at

  1079. one point in

  1080. my ignorant

  1081. youthfulness

  1082. thinking that

  1083. much of

  1084. witnessing was

  1085. just kind of

  1086. being persuasive

  1087. with a couple

  1088. Bible facts.

  1089. And there was a

  1090. time when I

  1091. thought that maybe

  1092. I was going to

  1093. be a salesman,

  1094. and I thought,

  1095. well, I can

  1096. carry that

  1097. discipline over

  1098. into spiritual

  1099. realms.

  1100. And so do you

  1101. realize that there's

  1102. a way you can

  1103. manipulate people to

  1104. say yes about

  1105. enough times that

  1106. they'll buy a used

  1107. vacuum cleaner from

  1108. you?

  1109. Now, because of

  1110. that, there's a

  1111. three-day reversionary

  1112. rule.

  1113. How many of you

  1114. know that?

  1115. You sign it in

  1116. your home, you

  1117. have three days to

  1118. decide no.

  1119. Well, I talked

  1120. many people into

  1121. quote-unquote

  1122. conversion, and they

  1123. exercised the

  1124. three-day reversionary

  1125. clause as soon as

  1126. I left.

  1127. You can't persuade

  1128. people with

  1129. intellect to become

  1130. believers.

  1131. I understand that,

  1132. right?

1133. It has to be the

  1134. work of the Spirit

  1135. of God.

  1136. And the point

  1137. that Jesus was

  1138. making here is the

  1139. physical part of

  1140. man cannot produce

  1141. genuine spiritual

  1142. life.

  1143. It's not going to

  1144. happen.

  1145. And so all the

  1146. self-help books in

  1147. the world, all the

  1148. name-it-claim-it

  1149. hucksters, all the

  1150. yoga and meditation

  1151. and vegan diets that

  1152. you decide to follow,

  1153. they're not going to

  1154. change who you are

  1155. inside.

  1156. Spiritual life and

  1157. salvation can only

  1158. come through the

  1159. work of the Spirit

  1160. of God.

  1161. Look at verse 7.

  1162. Do not marvel.

1163. When I say to you,

1164. when I said to you,

  1165. you must be born

  1166. again.

  1167. You see, here was

  1168. Nicodemus who came

  1169. with this emptiness in

  1170. his heart.

  1171. He sensed that

  1172. something was wrong,

1173. and he saw that Jesus

  1174. was doing things that

  1175. were exceptional.

  1176. And he came and

  1177. said, man, I need

  1178. help.

  1179. And Jesus said, hey,

1180. this is not a problem

  1181. you can solve by

  1182. yourself.

  1183. Spiritual life and

  1184. salvation can only

  1185. come through the work

  1186. of the Holy Spirit.

1187. And so here you are in

  1188. verse 8.

1189. It says, the wind blows

  1190. where it wishes, and

1191. you hear its sound, but

1192. you do not know where

1193. it comes from or where

  1194. it goes.

1195. Jesus is taking a very

  1196. simple little thing, and

  1197. he's making an application

1198. to help make the point

  1199. to Nicodemus.

  1200. You at least understand

1201. that the wind which you

  1202. cannot see, and probably

1203. as smart as Nicodemus was,

  1204. he was not a

  1205. meteorologist and did

  1206. not understand all the

1207. nuances of how the wind

  1208. works.

1209. How many of you remember

  1210. the little poem, who

  1211. has seen the wind?

  1212. Neither you nor I.

  1213. Okay.

1214. But when the wind is

1215. rustling in the leaves, we

1216. know the wind is going

  1217. by.

  1218. And Jesus says, hey,

  1219. listen, you don't get

1220. the idea of what the

  1221. wind is necessarily, but

1222. you see the evidence of

  1223. it.

  1224. And he was pointing

  1225. out that what Nicodemus

1226. could see was the work

1227. of the Holy Spirit in

  1228. people's lives that was

  1229. drawing attention to what

  1230. he needed inside.

1231. So when you look at this

  1232. passage, what should you

  1233. do?

  1234. What should you do?

1235. I want to remind you that

1236. the purpose of preaching is

1237. really to bring people to

1238. the point of saying yes or

  1239. no to God.

1240. And there are some of you

  1241. sitting here this morning

1242. that the truth of the

1243. matter is have never come

1244. to the place of coming

1245. to grips with the absolute

  1246. moral bankruptcy of your

  1247. heart and the emptiness

1248. and the darkness of your

  1249. soul.

1250. And as a result of that,

1251. there is this void that you

  1252. cannot ultimately fill with

  1253. your own efforts.

1254. So what do you do?

1255. Number one, I want you to

1256. understand that the work of

1257. the Spirit of God is to

  1258. bring conviction.

1259. And if you are sitting here

1260. this morning and the Spirit

1261. of God is convicting you of

1262. the darkness of your soul and

1263. the reality of your spiritual

1264. bankruptcy, I want to tell you

  1265. that's good news.

  1266. That's not bad news.

1267. That means the Spirit of God is

1268. drawing and working and he's in

1269. the process of persuading you

  1270. that you're absolutely hopeless

  1271. in your own condition.

  1272. You cannot save yourself.

1273. What's the second thing that we

  1274. do?

1275. One, we're convicted by the

  1276. Spirit of God.

  1277. Number two, we confess.

  1278. And confession means

  1279. essentially to say, God,

1280. you're right about my heart.

1281. You're right about my heart.

1282. It is dark and it is hard.

1283. It is an idol factory.

1284. It is filled with bitterness

  1285. and dissatisfaction.

1286. It is broken in its condition

1287. and I can't do anything about it.

1288. And third, we call out in faith.

1289. And we believe in the promises

  1290. that Jesus has made.

  1291. And here's the promise that I

1292. want you to hold on to.

1293. Here's what the Bible says.

1294. It says, whosoever calls upon

1295. the name of the Lord, what?

  1296. Shall be saved.

1297. Do you understand how simple

  1298. that is?

1299. Do you understand that nobody

1300. gets there without, first of all,

1301. being convicted by the Spirit of God

  1302. and recognizing the bankruptcy

  1303. of their soul?

1304. That's the work of Christ.

1305. Tim Knoyer and no one else

1306. in this church, no one else

1307. that you will ever bump into

  1308. has the ability ultimately

1309. of persuading you of the darkness

  1310. of your heart.

1311. Only God can do that.

1312. But when that persuasion comes

  1313. and that convicting power

1314. of the Spirit of God

1315. bears down on your heart,

1316. the thing to do is to confess

1317. and say, I am a bankrupt sinner

1318. deserving the judgment of God.

1319. And yet I understand that God

1320. sent His Son to die for my sins

  1321. upon the cross.

1322. And I will not in my arrogance

  1323. say, no thank you.

  1324. I will cry out.

  1325. And I will confess.

1326. And I will believe that He

  1327. who sent His Son

  1328. to be my Savior

1329. and to die in my place

  1330. will keep His promise.

1331. You know what He promised?

1332. He said this in the Scriptures,

1333. whosoever calls upon the name

1334. of the Lord shall be saved.

  1335. Do you know what?

1336. At the end of the day,

1337. you cannot receive the blessing

1338. and the benefit of salvation

  1339. just by sitting there

1340. and saying, well, it sounds good.

1341. You have to reach out and say,

  1342. I need that desperately.

1343. I receive it for myself.

1344. I believe Jesus died for me

1345. and I trust Him as my Savior.

  1346. Let's bow our heads

1347. and come to the Lord in prayer.

1348. I want to appeal to you this morning

  1349. as you sit here

1350. to come to grips with where you are

  1351. in your spiritual journey.

1352. There are some of you here today

1353. that I think are not saved.

  1354. I don't know that for a fact,

1355. but there are some of you here

1356. that have never come to faith in Christ.

1357. You're kind of going through

  1358. thinking you're a pretty good person,

1359. but I want to tell you this.

  1360. Jesus didn't die

1361. to waste His life on the cross.

1362. He died because no one

  1363. can save themselves

  1364. by their own effort.

  1365. And this morning,

  1366. the Spirit of God

1367. is working to bring conviction

  1368. and to help you

  1369. who sit here

  1370. under the teaching

1371. of the Word of God

  1372. recognize the moral bankruptcy

1373. of the empty heart of man.

1374. Christ Jesus came into the world

  1375. to save sinners.

1376. He died on the cross

1377. to satisfy the judgment of God

1378. for all of your sin.

  1379. How can you

1380. turn away from that offer

  1381. that He graciously makes

  1382. to you this morning

  1383. and say,

  1384. not today,

  1385. I don't care.

1386. I would plead with you

  1387. in Christ's stead.

  1388. Hear the convicting truth

  1389. of the gospel

  1390. and humble yourself

1391. for the glory of Christ.

  1392. Father God,

  1393. You know our heart.

  1394. You know our need.

1395. And I ask that Your Spirit

1396. would work to draw us

  1397. to the cross

  1398. and to faith

1399. in the Lord Jesus Christ

  1400. in whom alone

  1401. is salvation.

  1402. And I ask this

1403. because of the Lord Jesus.

  1404. Amen.

  1405. Let's stand together

  1406. as John leads us

  1407. in our singing.

1408. And as we are singing,

1409. we give a moment for you.

1410. Some of you are here today

1411. and the Spirit of God

  1412. is touching your heart

  1413. that there's something

1414. you need to take care of publicly.

1415. It may be that you need

1416. to be obedient to the Lord

1417. in a matter of baptism.

1418. It may be that He's calling

1419. to be part of this fellowship.

  1420. You know,

1421. it's one thing to kind of

1422. wave at the bus going by.

1423. It's another thing to get on

  1424. and say,

  1425. I'm part of it.

  1426. Hmm?

1427. And all God's people said what?

  1428. Okay.

1429. And then there may be

1430. some of you here today

  1431. that desperately need Jesus

  1432. as your Savior.

1433. I would plead with you.

1434. Don't walk out of here

1435. without taking care of that.

1436. Now we're going to sing.

1437. We're going to sing our hearts out.

1438. Aren't we going to do that?

1439. And if God is working in your heart,

1440. don't you mess with Him

  1441. this morning.

  1442. Be humble.

  1443. Be humble.

  1444. Be humble.

  1445. Be humble.

  1446. Be humble.
