  1. If I may, could I ask that we sing that, not what your hands have done again, at the end.

  2. ! Thank you.

  3. I don't, every week, change the order of the service, but I don't think I do, do I?

  4. No, I don't.

  5. I don't.

  6. But I got to tell you, the words to that song just fit perfectly with the text.

  7. I want you to understand that it's the text that drives our music, and it's the text that drives our singing.

  8. So we come to the text.

  9. In John chapter 3, we're going to look at verses 17 through 21.

    John 3 chapter mention

  10. And as we take up this passage this morning, I would be remiss if I didn't labor for a moment to plead with you to do that,

  11. which is probably my most common request, and that is that you pray as the preaching of the Word of God goes on.

  12. I am fully persuaded that prayer is a vital part of preaching, in that it is the work of the Spirit of God,

  13. both to declare the truth and then to have the truth strike hearts and make a difference.

  14. And I can tell you that Tim Knoyer has, on many occasions, sat through sermons,

  15. the start of which I thought, well, I've got to last for another 40 minutes or whatever,

  16. and then the Spirit of God has tapped me on the shoulder.

  17. How many of you know what the Spirit's tap is like?

  18. It's not a physical tap.

  19. It's just like, hey, Bubba.

  20. And it's like, okay, I got this.

  21. I'm supposed to pray now and ask you to work in my heart.

  22. Yes, and the Spirit does.

  23. So I'm going to ask that you join me as we pray and that as I preach, you pray.

  24. And I don't mind if your eyes are closed.

  25. I won't have any suspicion.

  26. I mean, after all, you didn't have to come to Sunday school, so I know you're bright-eyed and bushy-tailed.

  27. And so if your eyes are closed, I'm assuming that you're thinking, oh, Lord, help him.

  28. I'm there.

  29. I buy it.

  30. Let's pray.

  31. Let's pray.

  32. Even as it does today, the frailty of mankind.

  33. And you had these words penned for our edification, not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit, saith the Lord.

  34. And so this morning, as we take this sacred passage in hand,

  35. we are mindful that we are coming to a text that is for our profit and for the glory of Christ.

  36. And it is our humble desire and our confessed dependence on you that you would be exalted.

  37. We ask this in Jesus' name.

  38. Amen.

  39. Well, as we look at John 3, verse 17 through 21, we are continuing the study of the book of John.

    John 3:17–21

  40. And I want to remind you that John is not like the other synoptic gospels in that it is not a gospel that gives us a great deal of detail about Christ's life here on earth.

  41. It is fundamentally a theological discourse.

  42. And I don't want to use the word theological to cast it in this heavy, gloomy light.

  43. But it is instruction about the nature and character of Christ.

  44. If you were actually looking for one verse that would give you a summary of why the book was written,

  45. you would find it in John chapter 20, verse 31, where the apostle says,

    John 20:31

  46. Hey, listen, all these things that I've gathered, and he only tells us about eight different incidents about Christ in the early flow.

  47. He says,

  48. These things are gathered so that you may have the information on which to rest your faith in the Lord Jesus Christ,

  49. who is the Son of God and the Savior of the world.

  50. And that believing, you might have eternal life.

  51. And so as we work our way through this passage, one of the things that we're going to see is this recurring theme of John's gospel is profoundly evangelistic.

  52. And John's gospel is profoundly edifying for the believer.

  53. And the two pieces come together.

  54. There's another thing that we are going to find in particular today.

  55. And that is that we are going to be challenged by the doctrines of the responsibility of mankind for his rejection of the sweetness of the offer of salvation.

  56. And on the other side, by the reminder that really salvation is a work of God.

  57. And when we try to put these together in a perfect and symmetrical way where we've got it all figured out,

  58. the truth of the matter is that our minds kind of short out.

  59. I'm reminded of Isaiah chapter 55, verse 8.

    Isaiah 55:8

  60. You probably know it by recitation and not by the text.

  61. It says,

  62. My thoughts are not your thoughts.

  63. My ways are not your ways.

  64. You see, we have a tendency of being rather singular.

  65. We can pick up on,

  66. All right, all right, that's what I'm supposed to do.

  67. Or,

  68. All right, all right, that's what God does.

  69. And being able to put the two together requires a broader scope and grasp of truth than our little pea brain can handle.

  70. And so we kind of have a tendency to get wigged out on one side or the other.

  71. How many of you understand where I'm talking about so far?

  72. Okay?

  73. The truth of the matter is, is that often in Scripture, in order to help our frailty, we find that,

  74. I just don't want to trip on this and embarrass myself,

  75. kick, kick, kick, kick.

  76. There we go.

  77. Okay.

  78. In order to help us with our frailty, remember, we see one thing or the other, right?

  79. Often in Scripture, you find that when God explains something about His sovereign work in a situation,

  80. He also helps us understand the dynamic of our own responsibility.

  81. We're going to see that today.

  82. I want you to look this morning at Christ's mission and the gospel's division.

  83. And in essence, what we are going to do this morning is answer two questions.

  84. Number one, why did God send Jesus?

  85. Why did God send Jesus?

  86. I do love that as my go-to Christmas question.

  87. You know, whenever I'm involved in a conversation with people in the proximity of Christmas,

  88. and we get into this business of salvation, and after all, that's where some of our conversations should go,

  89. I don't think you can force them, but hey, you ought to be praying and looking for opportunities

  90. to talk about why Jesus came.

  91. And in the course of conversation, when I come up with this issue,

  92. I always like to ask that real trick question, why did Jesus come?

  93. I mean, if salvation is just a matter of a little bit of self-improvement,

  94. or, you know, helping at SPCA or something like that,

  95. I mean, hey, Jesus wouldn't have had to come for that.

  96. And the truth of the matter is, is that we're going to answer,

  97. we're going to find the Bible answer to the question, okay, why did God send his son?

  98. The second one is this, and if Christ came to save men, why aren't all men saved?

  99. So we're going to look at those two pieces this morning and put these together

  100. and have a good Bible understanding of it.

  101. So let's begin by looking there in verse 17,

  102. for God did not send his son into the world to condemn the world,

  103. but in order that the world might be saved through him.

  104. I have to tell you, as I began praying and meditating about this verse,

  105. earlier in the week, and just so you understand,

  106. generally what happens is when I go home on Sunday,

  107. guess what I'm already beginning to do?

  108. I'm beginning to pray and meditate and think about it.

  109. I'm generally about two weeks out,

  110. just a little wiggle at the verse that I'm going to look at next week.

  111. This morning, as I was having devotions in prayer,

  112. I was studying, as a sidebar,

  113. just kind of took a look at the passage in Philippians

  114. that we're going to come to next week.

  115. It's just the way my mind works, okay?

  116. I'm not sure how it works, it just does.

  117. And so here, as I've been meditating

  118. and just chewing on this thing here in verse 17,

  119. why would God tell us that?

  120. I mean, that's an obvious...

  121. How many of you understand that asking the question why,

  122. with a prayerful deliberation,

  123. and also a dependence upon the Holy Spirit,

  124. is an intelligent thing to do

  125. in the process of figuring out what the Bible has to say?

  126. Why is it there?

  127. And so here is John telling us,

  128. hey, God wants you to know why Jesus came.

  129. And I want you to recognize,

  130. as we look at this there in verse 17,

  131. that God's first thought towards mankind is merciful.

  132. Is merciful.

  133. That's the way He is.

  134. Now, it would help us to understand

  135. that that is a challenge for us in some senses

  136. because the truth of the matter is

  137. is that there's an inclination in our heart

  138. to not always be very merciful.

  139. Would you agree with that?

  140. I mean, let's try this.

  141. You're driving,

  142. and the person in front of you

  143. is not driving responsibly,

  144. at least according to your set of rules.

  145. How many of you understand

  146. that our set of rules is very flexible?

  147. And so when you have an opportunity

  148. to exercise mercy or judgment,

  149. what is the first inclination?

  150. Off with their heads.

  151. Thank you, Mark.

  152. It's like, yeah.

  153. What story does that one come from?

  154. That's not a Bible story.

  155. Okay.

  156. I'm teasing, Mark.

  157. But, you know, the truth of the matter is

  158. is that here is God

  159. wanting us to understand something

  160. that's against our flow and our nature.

  161. He wants us to understand

  162. that this business of the reason that Jesus came

  163. is foundational and against the grain of our thinking.

  164. So why is it so important for us to grasp

  165. that Jesus came to save men and not judge them?

  166. Stop and realize that judgment for sin

  167. is actually an understandable expectation

  168. and one that is woven into so much of common sense

  169. and thinking all around the world.

  170. No religion that I can think of

  171. that really has a long history

  172. does not have some thinking

  173. regarding the matter of judgment.

  174. Now, the way in which judgment is accommodated may vary,

  175. but nevertheless,

  176. the idea that consequences flow out of decisions

  177. and actions is woven throughout our thinking.

  178. Even our common vernacular,

  179. the way in which we communicate,

  180. is marked by this.

  181. You know, you've heard the old saying,

  182. what's going around comes around.

  183. Have you ever heard that one?

  184. Or what about that?

  185. What you sow is what you reap.

  186. The idea underlying that

  187. is that you get what's coming to you.

  188. You did bad, you're going to get bad.

  189. And that's the way it is.

  190. And the idea that judgment is out there

  191. in some form or another

  192. kind of lurks on the horizon

  193. in all of our thinking.

  194. The Bible also helps us understand

  195. that this business of understanding judgment

  196. is not just a matter of common vernacular,

  197. but it's also something that the Bible is very clear on.

  198. Romans chapter 1,

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  199. very interesting that unbelieving men and women

  200. really do have a sense of judgment.

  201. We may not think so,

  202. but they do.

  203. Romans chapter 1,

    Romans 1:32

  204. verse 32,

  205. it says,

  206. men knowing that those who practice sin

  207. deserve to die,

  208. does that make sense?

  209. They still go on and do those sins.

  210. Another passage would be Luke chapter 23,

    Luke 23 chapter mention

  211. and here is Jesus between two thieves

  212. who are hanging there on the cross.

  213. And remember,

  214. one of the thieves is kind of railing at Jesus.

  215. Hey, if you are the man,

  216. the son of God,

  217. come down off the cross

  218. and do something for us too, you know.

  219. And what does the other thief say?

  220. Does anybody remember?

  221. Hey,

  222. we're getting what we have coming to us.

  223. Another illustration would be

  224. in the Jewish culture in that day,

  225. when a lot of people died,

  226. they thought that the death

  227. was the consequence of divine judgment.

  228. Remember when Jesus said,

  229. hey,

  230. all those guys who got squashed

  231. when the tower fell on them,

  232. don't you just think

  233. that they were worse sinners

  234. because you need to repent as well.

  235. All of us stand condemned before a holy God.

  236. Probably one of the most sobering pictures

  237. of men's attitude towards judgment

  238. is over in the book of Revelation.

  239. So I want you to look,

  240. if you would turn in your Bible

  241. to Revelation chapter 6,

    Revelation 6:16

  242. verse 16 and 17.

  243. Talk about some of the more sobering

  244. Bible verses regarding the heart of man.

  245. I mean, after all,

  246. the attitude of some is that,

  247. oh, well, men have some problems,

  248. but just with a little bit of tweaking,

  249. a little bit of helping,

  250. they'll get there.

  251. Listen, everybody,

  252. smile at me

  253. because I want you to look at me

  254. just for a second, okay?

  255. The book of Revelation makes it clear

  256. that God will judge sin.

  257. That's what the tribulation will indicate.

  258. And here's the other piece in that.

  259. And in the full face

  260. of the evident judgment of God against sin,

  261. men for the most part will not repent.

  262. Revelation chapter 6,

    Revelation 6:16

  263. verse 16 and 17.

  264. And we find that as these horrible things

  265. are happening,

  266. the seals, et cetera,

  267. it says,

  268. calling to the mountains and rocks,

  269. fall on us and hide us

  270. from the face of him

  271. who is seated on the throne.

  272. And now mark this part,

  273. and from the wrath of the lamb.

  274. For the great day of their wrath has come

  275. and who shall stand?

  276. Instead of saying,

  277. I have it coming,

  278. I deserve it,

  279. and your judgment is just and holy,

  280. men will,

  281. instead of coming to grips

  282. with the reality of their sin,

  283. will resist that fact.

  284. Let me have you look at another passage.

  285. Revelation chapter 16.

    Revelation 16 chapter mention

  286. How many of you ever just thought to yourself,

  287. well, if guys would just make it a little clearer,

  288. or if people could just figure it out,

  289. it would be okay?

  290. Remember I said the book of Revelation

  291. is a very clear indicator

  292. that what men lack

  293. is not more information.

  294. Revelation chapter 16, verse 9.

    Revelation 16:9

  295. They were scorched by the fierce heat,

  296. and they cursed the name of God

  297. who had power over these plagues.

  298. They did not repent

  299. and give him glory.

  300. They knew who was causing the heartache.

  301. This was not just the providential,

  302. circumstantial happenings

  303. of accidents that,

  304. whoop, bang, there it is.

  305. Well, is it my fault?

  306. Is it your fault?

  307. No, they knew this was God doing something

  308. and trying to get their attention

  309. and help them understand

  310. the absolute hardness of their heart.

  311. Verse 11.

  312. And they cursed the God of heaven

  313. for their pain and their sores,

  314. and they did not repent

  315. of their deeds.

  316. Verse 21.

  317. And great hailstones,

  318. about 100 pounds.

  319. How many of you have seen a hailstone

  320. the size of a softball?

  321. I never have,

  322. other than on Google.

  323. You know, it's like, whoa.

  324. I mean, can you imagine

  325. hailstones the size of softballs?

  326. Now, this is not a softball-sized hailstone.

  327. This is a 100-pound chunk of ice.

  328. And it says here,

  329. they were falling from heaven on people,

  330. and they cursed God

  331. for the plague of the hail

  332. because the plague was so severe.

  333. Now, why were they cursing God

  334. for his judgment against them?

  335. Because of the hardness

  336. and the darkness of their heart.

  337. So I want you to understand this morning,

  338. as you look,

  339. going back to John chapter 3,

    John 3 chapter mention

  340. that when John the apostle

  341. opens up here in verse 17

  342. and says, hey, listen,

  343. let me make it clear,

  344. God did not send his son into the world

  345. to judge the world,

  346. but to offer salvation.

  347. He wants the unbelieving world

  348. to understand the heart of God

  349. as merciful and gracious,

  350. tender, long-suffering,

  351. and compassionate,

  352. and God's desire

  353. is that not any should perish,

  354. but all should come to everlasting life.

  355. And so I want you to understand this morning

  356. that the Spirit wants us to marvel

  357. at the mercy and the grace of God

  358. who offers salvation to us.

  359. I trust that that is one of the things

  360. that gives you that buoyant sense

  361. of confidence and hope

  362. that you know for certain

  363. that salvation is of the Lord

  364. and there is no one

  365. that is beyond the shadow,

  366. beyond the pale

  367. of his ability to save.

  368. Earlier in the week,

  369. I had the opportunity

  370. of sharing the gospel

  371. with two men

  372. had come to clean out my drain.

  373. You buy a new house

  374. and you find out

  375. that the drains are plugged.

  376. You know,

  377. there are lots of surprises

  378. in home ownership.

  379. And so I figured

  380. that they needed supervision.

  381. I'm down there,

  382. you know,

  383. just watching and figuring out,

  384. you know,

  385. if I'm going to be a drain cleaner

  386. later in my life,

  387. I need to have

  388. a little bit of experience.

  389. So I'm on the job

  390. watching them,

  391. grinding it out.

  392. And you know what?

  393. I did not wear

  394. my turned-around collar.

  395. I was in blue jeans

  396. and a gruddy-looking old shirt.

  397. But somehow or another,

  398. we got to talking about,

  399. guess who?

  400. First about life.

  401. And I mean,

  402. they were right there.

  403. Tattoos on both arms

  404. and pretty impressive.

  405. And you know,

  406. guy said,

  407. hey, look here.

  408. I mean,

  409. there was so much ink.

  410. I am not a tattoo expert,

  411. so I just want to...

  412. Do you see it?

  413. No.

  414. What is it?

  415. It's a cross.

  416. Okay.

  417. Well,

  418. it was a pretty fantastic cross.

  419. It wasn't one

  420. that was traditional.

  421. It was very unusual.

  422. And they said,

  423. do you see that?

  424. Well,

  425. that I could see.

  426. It was a devil.

  427. And I said,

  428. yeah,

  429. I got that one.

  430. That's a devil.

  431. And then somewhere

  432. in the midst of just

  433. hundreds of other

  434. little dots and things,

  435. he said,

  436. do you see that?

  437. I said,

  438. no.

  439. Those are two eyes.

  440. That's me.

  441. He says,

  442. and the devil's fighting for me

  443. and Jesus is fighting for me.

  444. And I said,

  445. well,

  446. I'll tell you what,

  447. it's better than that.

  448. I want to tell you

  449. the sweetness of the gospel

  450. is this,

  451. is that God sent his son

  452. not to condemn the world,

  453. but that through him

  454. all men might be saved.

  455. And I want you to know

  456. this morning

  457. when you think about

  458. this verse,

  459. the thing that the spirit of God

  460. wants us to understand

  461. is that God sent his son

  462. for our sakes,

  463. to be our savior,

  464. to help us

  465. in the absolute despair

  466. of our life.

  467. And so there's a sense

  468. in which this repetition,

  469. and you have to admit

  470. that it is repetitious,

  471. I mean,

  472. what's it say in verse 16?

  473. For God so loved the world,

  474. right?

  475. And then in verse 17,

  476. God didn't send his son

  477. into the world

  478. to condemn the world.

  479. Connected.

  480. So we understand

  481. that in this repetition

  482. there is a desire

  483. in the heart of God

  484. to make it clear

  485. that men need salvation

  486. and Christ came

  487. to be their savior.

  488. Well,

  489. if Christ came

  490. to be our savior,

  491. why are not more saved?

  492. I mean,

  493. that's a fair question,

  494. isn't it?

  495. I mean,

  496. after all,

  497. who is Jesus?

  498. Let me give you

  499. a couple illustrations

  500. so you have this

  501. fixed in your mind already.

  502. You'll remember

  503. that when the water

  504. into wine deal

  505. pulled off,

  506. remember,

  507. Jesus didn't ask

  508. all the people

  509. who were sitting around,

  510. do you think I can do it?

  511. Do you believe I can do it?

  512. What do you think?

  513. Do you think I can?

  514. No.

  515. Shambang,

  516. what happened?

  517. Just ordinary

  518. Palestinian water

  519. became top shelf wine.

  520. And how did it happen?

  521. It happened

  522. by the power of God.

  523. And so when you think

  524. about this business

  525. of salvation

  526. and you stop

  527. and recognize

  528. God sent his son

  529. to be the savior

  530. of the world,

  531. why are not more saved?

  532. Well,

  533. actually,

  534. I want you to recognize

  535. in the following verses,

  536. beginning there in verse 18,

  537. carrying on down to 21,

  538. we find that Christ

  539. is actually a divider.

  540. The light of the world

  541. draws,

  542. but also repels.

  543. So let me break down

  544. the next few verses

  545. into several

  546. very simple truths.

  547. believers.

  548. First,

  549. we find in verse 18

  550. that God divides mankind

  551. into two separate groups,

  552. believers

  553. and unbelievers.

  554. Look at the verse.

  555. Whoever believes in him,

  556. that's the believers,

  557. whoever believes in him

  558. is not condemned.

  559. But whoever does not believe

  560. is condemned already

  561. because he has not believed

  562. in the name of the

  563. only

  564. son of God.

  565. And so,

  566. you may not be thinking

  567. about this this morning,

  568. but here is the absolute

  569. gospel truth.

  570. All mankind

  571. falls into two categories,

  572. one of two different groups.

  573. Those who have trusted in Christ

  574. and those who are rejecting him.

  575. Those who've come to faith

  576. and those who refuse

  577. the call and the work of Christ.

  578. So,

  579. let's think with this,

  580. about this just for a moment

  581. and recognize that a believer

  582. is one who believes

  583. that God sent Jesus

  584. to be your Savior.

  585. That's what is meant

  586. in verse 18.

  587. Believes in him.

  588. It's like,

  589. yeah,

  590. I believe there is Jesus.

  591. I mean,

  592. remember over in James

  593. it says,

  594. you believe there is one God,

  595. you're doing well,

  596. even the demons believe

  597. and that doesn't rescue them.

  598. So,

  599. what is it saying really

  600. when it says

  601. that salvation

  602. is the matter

  603. of believing in Jesus?

  604. It's not just believing

  605. in the historical fact,

  606. but it's coming to grips

  607. that Jesus is real

  608. and he is real to you

  609. and he makes a world

  610. of difference

  611. in your life.

  612. Believing in his name

  613. means believing

  614. that you need a Savior

  615. and that you recognize

  616. you have no hope

  617. apart from his finished work

  618. on the cross.

  619. Why is it

  620. that I have abiding confidence

  621. that the day I draw

  622. my last breath,

  623. I will wake up in eternity

  624. and I will enjoy

  625. the presence of Christ?

  626. Not because I look back

  627. across the record

  628. of my miserable life

  629. and say,

  630. well, you know what,

  631. Tim,

  632. at least you've been

  633. on the uphill journey

  634. and you're getting better

  635. all the time.

  636. Well, that's the work of God,

  637. not me.

  638. And I want you to understand

  639. that when I stop

  640. and think about it,

  641. it's Christ who saved me.

  642. I want you to recognize

  643. something else

  644. as you look at verse 18.

  645. The unbeliever

  646. really rejects the truth

  647. that God sent his Son

  648. to be the Savior of mankind.

  649. Look at the passage.

  650. It says,

  651. whoever does not believe

  652. is condemned already

  653. because he has not believed

  654. in the name

  655. of the only Son of God.

  656. It's stunning

  657. for us to really stop

  658. and ponder

  659. just how arrogant

  660. this rejection is.

  661. It's not just among

  662. jihadis in Iraq

  663. or in Afghanistan

  664. or rebels in Africa.

  665. America,

  666. the depravity of man

  667. abounds everywhere

  668. you turn.

  669. One of the things

  670. that I was really struck by,

  671. just deeply affected by,

  672. was the fact

  673. that I was doing

  674. some research

  675. and came across

  676. the fact that

  677. the state of Ohio

  678. ranks around about fifth

  679. in human trafficking

  680. and sexual slavery.

  681. Can you imagine that?

  682. Let me say that again slowly

  683. so you can appreciate

  684. what's being said.

  685. There are how many states?

  686. This is not

  687. a political question.

  688. The answer is 50, okay?

  689. So some of you

  690. are wondering,

  691. you've been in Washington

  692. too long

  693. and you don't know

  694. what the answer is.

  695. It's 50.

  696. And we are where?

  697. Fifth.

  698. You stop and think,

  699. the depravity of man's hearts

  700. is evident everywhere you go.

  701. Everywhere you go.

  702. It follows then,

  703. given the truth

  704. that God sent His Son

  705. to save men

  706. that we want to know why.

  707. Why is it?

  708. Why would men not believe?

  709. Why would they reject salvation?

  710. The answer that follows

  711. actually is there

  712. very clearly for us

  713. in verses 19 through 21.

  714. And as we follow the verses,

  715. we understand,

  716. for one thing,

  717. that men do not just

  718. wander away

  719. to their own destruction

  720. ignorantly in the dark.

  721. I want you to recognize this.

  722. Men do not just slip away

  723. and fall into eternity

  724. in darkness

  725. with complete oblivion

  726. of their condition.

  727. Just as being a fool,

  728. I want you to follow

  729. very carefully

  730. because this is worth

  731. thinking about.

  732. Just as being a fool.

  733. Now what's the difference

  734. between doing foolish things

  735. and being a fool?

  736. How many of you know

  737. the difference?

  738. Smile at me if you do.

  739. We all on occasion

  740. do foolish things,

  741. okay?

  742. A fool is someone

  743. who's making a career choice

  744. to stay that way.

  745. Got that?

  746. A fool is someone

  747. who's making a career choice

  748. to stay that way.

  749. I mean,

  750. we've all done

  751. boneheaded things.

  752. But then when

  753. the Holy Spirit

  754. and our family

  755. and officers of the court

  756. or whatever else

  757. come aside

  758. and give us

  759. a little gentle tap

  760. to say,

  761. not good,

  762. I got that.

  763. I'll work to change.

  764. A fool is someone

  765. who makes a career choice.

  766. I'm going to keep doing that.

  767. I don't care what you say.

  768. It's what I want to do

  769. and hey.

  770. I want you to understand

  771. rejecting Christ

  772. is a deliberate

  773. and conscious choice.

  774. Listen to the indictment

  775. of Scripture

  776. against man.

  777. You look there

  778. in the passage

  779. going back

  780. just a little bit

  781. to John 1,

    John 1:4

  782. verse 4 and 5.

  783. It says,

  784. the light has come

  785. into the world.

  786. There in verse 19

  787. we see the same thing.

  788. It says,

  789. the light has come

  790. into the world

  791. and in essence

  792. what John the apostle

  793. is doing

  794. is reciting

  795. what he's already said.

  796. So I want you to turn back

  797. just for a second

  798. to John 1,

    John 1:4

  799. verse 4.

  800. It says,

  801. in him was life

  802. and the life

  803. was the light of men.

  804. The light shines

  805. in the darkness

  806. and the darkness

  807. has not overcome it.

  808. Instead of stepping

  809. into the realm

  810. where truth

  811. and grace operate,

  812. men consciously

  813. and deliberately

  814. choose the dark.

  815. Their deliberate choice

  816. is not an accident

  817. or an act of ignorance.

  818. It is a willful act

  819. to suit their wicked hearts.

  820. I remember many years ago

  821. early on in my ministry

  822. we had a break-in

  823. out in the garage

  824. out here

  825. and this was before

  826. we had a lot of security lights

  827. here on the property

  828. and I remember

  829. that those who were involved

  830. in caring for the property

  831. suggested,

  832. well,

  833. we need to put

  834. a security light up.

  835. I said,

  836. how much does that cost a month?

  837. It was $12 back then.

  838. I thought,

  839. not on your life.

  840. We're not spending

  841. $12 on some light.

  842. Now why,

  843. you look around,

  844. how many do we have?

  845. In fact,

  846. when one of them burns out

  847. we get an email

  848. from somebody saying,

  849. did you know

  850. you got a light turned out?

  851. Put another bulb in.

  852. You know,

  853. it's like,

  854. why is it that light

  855. makes a difference?

  856. It's because men love darkness.

  857. Men love darkness.

  858. Thieves hate the light.

  859. Thieves hate security cameras.

  860. One of the interesting things

  861. is to go into a store

  862. and watch people

  863. who you're wondering

  864. about their intentions.

  865. You know,

  866. those who just are out there

  867. to shop,

  868. they're kind of buzzing around

  869. looking at shelves.

  870. Do you know there are people

  871. that specialize

  872. in loss prevention?

  873. Do you know

  874. what loss prevention is?

  875. Stopping people

  876. from stealing.

  877. Do you know what people

  878. who specialize

  879. in loss prevention watch?

  880. People who are looking up.

  881. Do you know

  882. what people are looking up for?

  883. Not for the coming of Jesus.

  884. They're trying to figure out

  885. where they can get away with it.

  886. Okay?

  887. And so I want you

  888. to understand

  889. as you think about the truth

  890. that the Bible makes it clear

  891. that men love darkness

  892. when the heart is pure

  893. and the conscience is clear,

  894. there's no desire

  895. to hide from the light.

  896. Where sin is,

  897. there's a desire to hide.

  898. Furthermore,

  899. as you look in the passage,

  900. go back to John chapter 3,

    John 3 chapter mention

  901. let's just mark

  902. what we read there

  903. in verse 20.

  904. It says,

  905. for everyone who does

  906. wicked things

  907. hates the light.

  908. Hates the light.

  909. I'll never forget years ago

  910. when I was in seminary,

  911. I was a paint contractor

  912. and there was a home

  913. that had burned

  914. under suspicious

  915. circumstances.

  916. You've heard the saying

  917. that spontaneous combustion

  918. is where the mortgage papers

  919. and the insurance papers

  920. get too close together.

  921. Have you ever heard that?

  922. Okay?

  923. Well, this home

  924. was an absolute dump.

  925. I mean,

  926. it was the dumpiest dump

  927. that I can remember,

  928. at least at that time.

  929. And for whatever reason,

  930. I was hired to paint

  931. in this house.

  932. And the guy who hired me,

  933. the insurance agent,

  934. said,

  935. listen,

  936. all I want you to do

  937. is put it back

  938. in the shape it was.

  939. Yeah,

  940. I saw that look.

  941. It was a challenge

  942. for my conscience

  943. to do that,

  944. but that's what he did.

  945. I remember going into

  946. one of the rooms

  947. and deciding that,

  948. you know,

  949. I mean,

  950. I had to paint the windows

  951. so I thought I'd lift the window

  952. just to see,

  953. you know,

  954. painters want to know

  955. whether the windows work

  956. before they paint them.

  957. Okay?

  958. And so I remember

  959. the window was

  960. kind of halfway open

  961. so I moved the window up

  962. and there were cockroaches

  963. that were just,

  964. I mean,

  965. they were back to back

  966. and belly to belly

  967. across the window sill.

  968. No,

  969. the sill is on the bottom part.

  970. What is it?

  971. Pardon?

  972. The sash.

  973. I mean,

  974. and when I moved that,

  975. I mean,

  976. there are like about

  977. 30 or 40 cockroaches

  978. that suddenly sprinted

  979. for the dark.

  980. I thought to myself,

  981. ah,

  982. I can't believe

  983. I'm going to work here.

  984. And one of the things I did,

  985. I thought,

  986. you know,

  987. if they don't like light

  988. and I don't like them,

  989. I think the idea is what?

  990. More light is better.

  991. Here's the deal.

  992. It's not just cockroaches

  993. that don't like the light.

  994. Sinners don't like the light.

  995. Sinners don't like

  996. to be exposed.

  997. Sinners want to hide.

  998. I kind of chuckle

  999. when I think about politicians.

  1000. Isn't it standard

  1001. for politicians

  1002. to tell you

  1003. that their administration

  1004. is going to be

  1005. the most transparent?

  1006. I mean,

  1007. it's like,

  1008. really?

  1009. Men who engage

  1010. in lies

  1011. hate the light.

  1012. Now,

1013. I want you to look

  1014. at the closing part.

  1015. We can understand

  1016. wicked,

  1017. disobedient,

  1018. rebellious hearts

  1019. don't want to hear

  1020. the truth.

  1021. Turn it off.

  1022. I'm out of here.

  1023. There's something

  1024. very interesting

  1025. in verse 21.

  1026. But whoever does

  1027. what is truth

  1028. comes to the light

1029. so that it may be

  1030. clearly seen

  1031. that his works

  1032. have been carried out

  1033. in God.

  1034. God.

  1035. Remember I said

  1036. that where you find

  1037. the responsibility

1038. of the heart of man

  1039. and the sovereignty

  1040. of God

  1041. in salvation

  1042. in close proximity,

  1043. they're hard

  1044. to put together.

  1045. But God puts

  1046. both pieces there.

  1047. You look

  1048. and the answer

  1049. to the question,

  1050. why are men

  1051. not saved?

  1052. Well,

  1053. because they choose

  1054. the darkness.

  1055. That's what it says.

  1056. They hate the light

  1057. and they choose

  1058. the darkness.

  1059. They don't want

  1060. their deeds exposed.

1061. But listen to verse 21.

1062. Give you a summary of it.

1063. It says it this way,

1064. believers come to the light

1065. so that God can be glorified.

  1066. The believer does not

  1067. prance into the light

  1068. to get credit

1069. for being a wonderful person.

  1070. Do you understand that?

  1071. That's what this verse

  1072. is telling us

  1073. is that when men

  1074. come into the light,

1075. they're coming into the light

  1076. so someone else

  1077. gets credit.

  1078. I think that's pretty

  1079. important to understand

1080. and you need to put

  1081. your finger on it,

  1082. okay?

  1083. See,

  1084. verse 21

  1085. is not saying

  1086. that those of us

  1087. who were good people,

  1088. we kind of march

  1089. into the light

  1090. and say,

  1091. hey,

1092. do you see how good I am?

  1093. I'm just the most

  1094. wonderful person.

1095. I am the best neighbor.

1096. I'm the kind of person

  1097. that you want

  1098. to spend time with.

  1099. I am just sweet

  1100. and lovable

  1101. and I'm always going

  1102. to think good things

  1103. about,

  1104. you know,

  1105. that's not it.

  1106. That's not it.

  1107. The believer

  1108. walks into the light

  1109. and this is what

  1110. the passage says.

  1111. The believer

  1112. walks into the light

  1113. so that it can

  1114. clearly be seen

  1115. that what has happened

  1116. is a miracle

  1117. of God's doing.

  1118. That little part

  1119. towards the end

  1120. of verse 21

  1121. says,

  1122. so it can clearly

  1123. be seen

  1124. that his works

  1125. have been carried

  1126. out in God.

  1127. Turn in your Bibles

  1128. to Colossians 1

    Colossians 1:29

  1129. verse 29.

  1130. Colossians 1

    Colossians 1:29

  1131. verse 29.

  1132. And we're going

  1133. to come back

  1134. to John

  1135. so stay with there.

  1136. Don't take your finger

  1137. out of there

  1138. but we're going

  1139. to look at Colossians

  1140. just for a minute.

  1141. I love this text.

  1142. Colossians 1

    Colossians 1:29

  1143. verse 29.

  1144. For this I toil,

  1145. struggling with all,

  1146. what's the next word?

  1147. Look at it.

  1148. Not my face.

  1149. I'm not growing a horn.

  1150. I mean,

  1151. look in the Bible.

  1152. Okay?

  1153. For this I toil,

  1154. struggling with,

  1155. what's the next word?

  1156. His.

  1157. Energy

  1158. that he powerfully

  1159. works within me.

  1160. How does Tim Kenoyer

  1161. know he is saved?

  1162. It's because

  1163. I see the evidence

  1164. of someone else

  1165. helping me do things

  1166. I couldn't do

  1167. myself.

  1168. Go back

  1169. to John chapter 3.

    John 3 chapter mention

1170. Let me put it this way

  1171. for you

  1172. and have it stick

  1173. in your mind.

  1174. When the believer

  1175. tells his story,

  1176. the hero is Jesus.

1177. I want to make that clear.

  1178. this Tuesday,

  1179. I will preach

  1180. my father's

  1181. memorial service.

  1182. I think it's reasonable

  1183. for a son

  1184. to think highly

  1185. of his dad.

  1186. But I want you

1187. to hear me say it

  1188. this morning.

  1189. My dad's not

1190. the hero of his story.

  1191. Jesus is.

  1192. John chapter 4,

    John 4:29

  1193. verse 29,

  1194. and we'll close

  1195. with this.

  1196. I love

  1197. the story

  1198. of the woman

  1199. at the well.

  1200. I like it

  1201. because her life's

  1202. a mess.

  1203. serialized marriage

  1204. and prostitution

  1205. are not

  1206. radically separate.

  1207. Do you follow that?

  1208. And here's a woman

  1209. who Jesus comes to

  1210. and he says,

  1211. hey,

  1212. you need living water.

  1213. And she says,

  1214. well,

  1215. give it to me.

  1216. And he says,

  1217. go get your husband.

  1218. He says,

  1219. I don't have one.

  1220. She said,

  1221. you're right

  1222. because you've been

  1223. married five times

  1224. and you're shacking up

  1225. with somebody now.

  1226. And then God

  1227. brings salvation

  1228. into her life

  1229. and she's saved.

  1230. And do you know

  1231. what she does?

  1232. She runs into town.

  1233. Now,

  1234. what does she say

1235. when she gets into town?

  1236. Do you know?

  1237. I love this part.

  1238. I love this part.

  1239. Look at the passage.

  1240. Verse 29,

  1241. so the woman

  1242. left her water jar

  1243. and went away

  1244. into town

1245. and said to the people,

  1246. come,

  1247. see a man

  1248. who told me

1249. all that I ever did.

  1250. How could that broken

  1251. and wicked woman

  1252. say that

  1253. apart from understanding

  1254. the complete forgiveness

1255. of Christ in her life?

  1256. Do you understand that?

1257. So what should I do?

1258. I want you to understand

  1259. the passage is simple.

  1260. God sent his son

  1261. into this world

1262. not to condemn the world.

1263. There will be a day

  1264. of judgment

  1265. and Jesus will be

  1266. the one who's judging.

  1267. But at this time

  1268. as you hear

  1269. the presentation

  1270. of the sweetness

  1271. of the gospel,

  1272. it is this,

  1273. Christ Jesus came

  1274. to save you

  1275. from your sins

  1276. and to take away

  1277. the complete burden

  1278. and guilt

  1279. and shame

  1280. that Satan

  1281. has afflicted you

  1282. and terrified

  1283. with you.

  1284. Terrified you with.

  1285. So I want you

  1286. to understand

  1287. this morning

  1288. the plea

  1289. of scripture

  1290. is this,

  1291. be reconciled

  1292. to Christ.

  1293. Come to him.

  1294. Understand

  1295. that Christ

  1296. Jesus

  1297. came to be

  1298. your savior

  1299. and it would be

  1300. a horrible,

  1301. eternally

  1302. condemning

  1303. choice

  1304. choice

  1305. to walk away

  1306. from the gift

  1307. he offers you

  1308. this morning.

  1309. Let's close

  1310. in prayer.

  1311. Our Father God

  1312. as we

  1313. take this passage

  1314. in hand

  1315. and we just revel

  1316. in the sweetness

  1317. of Christ,

  1318. we who know

  1319. the Lord Jesus

  1320. stop and recognize

  1321. that the hero

  1322. of our story

  1323. is not us.

  1324. we were broken,

  1325. ruined

  1326. on our

  1327. deliberate way

  1328. towards hell

  1329. and you

  1330. in your kindness

  1331. found us

  1332. and drew us

  1333. to the cross.

  1334. And this morning

  1335. that offer

  1336. of salvation

  1337. through complete

  1338. forgiveness

  1339. in the Lord

  1340. Jesus Christ

  1341. is available

  1342. to those

  1343. who sit here

  1344. this morning

  1345. under the hearing

  1346. of the word

  1347. of God

  1348. and sense

  1349. the prompting

  1350. of the spirit

  1351. that says

  1352. you don't have

  1353. to stay there.

  1354. You don't have

  1355. to carry

  1356. that burden

  1357. of sin anymore.

  1358. You may have

  1359. complete forgiveness

  1360. but you have

  1361. to humble yourself.

  1362. You have to come

  1363. as a broken

  1364. contrite sinner

  1365. that says

  1366. I deserve

  1367. the judgment

  1368. of a holy God

  1369. but I hear

  1370. the word

  1371. that Christ Jesus

  1372. died in my place

  1373. and I want

  1374. his blood

  1375. attached to my account.

  1376. And that's

  1377. our prayer

  1378. this morning.

  1379. In Jesus' name.

  1380. Let's stand together.
