  1. I would like you to turn in your Bibles this morning to Philippians chapter 3 and before we open the text together.

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  2. All right, that's something I want to work at and I'm going to be conscious and deliberate in doing so.

  3. So here's my appeal to do.

  4. At least when we're singing.

  5. Now I understand some of us are linear and some of us are global.

  6. You know, some of us are all over the place.

  7. And some of us are pretty tracky.

  8. You know, it's like one thing after another.

  9. So I'm asking you to do something that may be stretching things a little bit.

  10. But when we are singing, would you mind cross-referencing the things we're singing about with Scripture?

  11. Does that make sense?

  12. Hey, listen to me.

  13. Isaiah chapter 8 verse 20 says this.

    Isaiah 8:20

  14. To the law and to the prophecies or the testimonies, if it speaks not according to this, there is no light in them.

  15. In other words, the benchmark of truth is really the Bible.

  16. And I am so appreciative of the fact that when we gather to sing, that those who minister to us and encourage us in singing are very conscious and deliberate about taking the passage that we are going to study.

  17. And finally, John gets this most of the time in advance, quite a bit in advance, about a week or so.

  18. And he has time to kind of ponder this.

  19. And then the songs reference back to the text.

  20. And so my plea is this.

  21. This is on your 15 to-do list, right?

  22. You got that?

  23. And I'll try not to nag too often about this, but at least bump your wife and say, hey, what passage?

  24. Do that, okay?

  25. Or nudge your children and say, what passage?

  26. Or do you understand what I'm saying?

  27. Here's my plea.

  28. Listen.

  29. Everybody look up.

  30. Smile.

  31. Please.

  32. Seriously.

  33. I want us to learn to be conscious and deliberate in thinking scripturally.

  34. And probably one of the easier places to exercise is when we are singing.

  35. So you say, all right, Holy Spirit, bring to mind passages that I need.

  36. Am I the only one getting hot in here?

  37. I see lots of people fanning.

  38. And I am very tempted to take off my sweater.

  39. That's a threat.

  40. But anyway, okay.

  41. All right.

  42. Here we go.

  43. Philippians chapter 3.

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  44. Let me read the passage to you.

  45. Beginning there in verse 8.

  46. Indeed, I count everything as lost because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus,

  47. my Lord, for his sake.

  48. I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him,

  49. not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law,

  50. but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith.

  51. Now here's verse 10 that I want us to focus on this morning,

  52. that I may know him and the power of his resurrection,

  53. and I may share in his suffering, becoming like him in his death.

  54. Will you pray with me and pray for me?

  55. Holy Father, for us to take this passage in mind and hand this morning

  56. is to do something that is important and we trust is enabled by the Spirit of God.

  57. Lord, we are often guilty of hearing and not applying.

  58. We're often guilty of allowing time that should be spent profitably,

  59. focusing on things that are of Christ's preeminence and glory,

  60. and squandering that time in thinking of things that are of no eternal value and purpose.

  61. And so we would ask humbly this morning that your Spirit would enable me as I preach,

  62. that I might do so in such a fashion that it is evident that it is the work of God

  63. that is playing out in real time in the teaching and the preaching of the Word,

  64. but also, Lord, that it is received with the help of the Spirit

  65. that it might bear fruit in the lives of those who know the Lord Jesus Christ,

  66. and it might be used by your Spirit to draw those who are here today

  67. that do not know the Lord Jesus to the cross and to salvation.

  68. And so, Lord, as I preach, I'm committed to bathe this message in prayer,

  69. and as I preach, I trust your people will pray that we might rejoice together

  70. and seeing you at work in our fellowship and in our lives individually this morning.

  71. And we ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.

  72. As we take up this passage, I really look at verse 10 as being one of those focal passages

  73. that helps us in our journey.

  74. And I think about the year that lies in front of us,

  75. and I would imagine that there are some of you that have consciously and deliberately

  76. made some decisions about things that you're going to work on this year.

  77. Now, you may be on the other side of Christmas, and you're thinking to yourself,

  78. well, okay, Christmas and New Year has come and passed,

  79. and I need to do something about the fact that I have overindulged myself a little bit.

  80. I don't want you to raise your hand and give yourself away, but you understand that.

  81. There are some of you who might be saying, well, okay,

  82. last year was a bust in such and such an area,

  83. and this year I'm going to be conscious and deliberate,

  84. and this is what I'm going to work on.

  85. I'm just curious, how many of you have a plan to read through the Bible this year?

  86. Raise your hand and wave at me.

  87. Get it up above the elbow like this.

  88. Okay, you're going to read through the Bible.

  89. How many of you are thinking about it and might be a good idea,

  90. but you haven't decided yet?

  91. Raise your hand.

  92. Let's try that again.

  93. It was a real soft question.

  94. Are you alive?

  95. Are you thinking about it maybe?

  96. And it might be a good idea.

  97. Thank you.

  98. I like seeing that hand.

  99. Okay, that's a goal.

  100. That's one that's worthy of your consideration.

  101. You may have others that you've thought about and decided,

  102. man, this is what I'm going to focus on, God being my help,

  103. and as a result of that focus, it's going to make a difference.

  104. How many of you have ever gone to the store and didn't make a list

  105. and then come back and decided you needed to go again?

  106. You ever done that?

  107. Well, with life, you don't get a do-over.

  108. It kind of whittles out behind you,

  109. and if you haven't planned and thought about it intentionally,

  110. the outcome often is a level of disappointment

  111. as you look back across the path and say,

  112. man, I should have.

  113. I wish.

  114. I could have done better.

  115. And so my appeal, my plea for you this morning

  116. is that you who are believers would consciously

  117. and deliberately make some objective decisions

  118. and mark them down

  119. and keep those in front of you in the coming year.

  120. And I can tell you this, it'll make a difference.

  121. What we're looking at in this passage, actually,

  122. in Philippians chapter 3,

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  123. is the apostle kind of pushing together

  124. his life objectives and goals,

  125. and he's separating out all the chaff

  126. and setting aside those things

  127. that are of no importance to him

  128. and zeroing down on those things

  129. that were at the very center of his life.

  130. And it is from that core

  131. that I want to encourage you this morning

  132. to take the pattern of the apostle

  133. and make it true for your life.

  134. So let's look here at the things

  135. that really governed the apostle's life

  136. as he kind of ground on through life.

  137. Look at the passage in verse 10.

  138. It says,

  139. that I may know him.

  140. And so let's take this simple statement up

  141. and just kind of ponder what Paul means

  142. because we understand, for one thing,

  143. that Paul's background was very, very significant

  144. in understanding all about the Old Testament.

  145. He was a Pharisee of the Pharisees.

  146. He was a well-trained Jew.

  147. He had sat at Gamaliel's feet,

  148. and without question,

  149. if you had asked him about any of the Old Testament passages

  150. that had reference to the Messiah,

  151. he probably could have spoken on them

  152. and referred to them and understood the relationship

  153. that those passages had to the hope of Israel.

  154. But nevertheless,

  155. he'd never come to a personal relationship with Christ

  156. until on the road to Damascus.

  157. Do you remember what happened?

  158. Christ revealed himself to him.

  159. Christ drew him to salvation,

  160. and Paul's life was radically changed.

  161. Where at one time,

  162. he had been a persecutor of believers.

  163. He became one of the preeminent spokespersons for the gospel

  164. and the one that God used in a very particular way

  165. to bring the gospel to the Gentiles.

  166. That's who we are.

  167. Paul was a phenomenal instrument in the hands of God.

  168. And so as you hear him say this this morning,

  169. you understand that when Paul says,

  170. that I might know him,

  171. he's not speaking just about that academic information

  172. that he gathered at one time.

  173. And there are some of you sitting here

  174. that maybe grew up in a Christian home.

  175. You heard the Bible stories.

  176. You know about who Jesus is.

  177. You know that he was born in a manger in a stable.

  178. You know that he was born of a virgin.

  179. But all that information is just kind of academic

  180. and kind of abstract.

  181. It doesn't really have a personal connection to you.

  182. When Paul makes that statement that I might know him,

  183. he's talking about having more than a head knowledge

  184. about who Christ is.

  185. He's talking about having a personal,

  186. genuine relationship that is governed by the reality

  187. of who that person is.

  188. I don't want to overplay the importance of the word,

  189. but when Paul speaks about knowing here,

  190. he's talking about that kind of knowledge

  191. that is something that is personal

  192. and experiential in nature.

  193. In other words,

  194. I understand by virtue

  195. of what I've gone through and experienced.

  196. So in relationship to this business of knowing Christ,

  197. let me draw out several truths

  198. that I want you to think about this morning.

  199. For one,

  200. our knowledge of Christ can be deepened.

  201. Our knowledge of Christ can be deepened.

  202. And I want to assure you

  203. that a deepening relationship

  204. and understanding of the person of Christ

  205. will make a significant difference

  206. in the life of the believer.

  207. You see,

  208. the things that we care about

  209. and the things we invest our energy in

  210. end up having a profound influence

  211. on who we are

  212. and how we go about life.

  213. Go back just a little bit.

  214. We're in verse 10.

  215. So go back to verse 8.

  216. And here's Paul saying,

  217. Indeed,

  218. I count everything as loss

  219. because of the surpassing worth

  220. of knowing Christ.

  221. Indeed,

  222. I count everything

  223. as loss

  224. so that I may have

  225. a growing understanding

  226. of the person of Christ.

  227. It's amazing when you stop

  228. and think about this.

  229. Paul was saying that

  230. all the other things in my life

  231. are of relative insignificance

  232. in comparison to the importance

  233. of knowing the Lord Jesus.

  234. Now, it's easy for us

  235. to hear that said,

  236. but let's kind of play it out

  237. in real time.

  238. So there you are.

  239. You get up in the morning

  240. and you have all good intentions

  241. of spending some time

  242. with the Lord, right?

  243. I mean,

  244. after all,

  245. Christians,

  246. we know that.

  247. That's important.

  248. But there you go.

  249. You grab your iPad

  250. and before you actually

  251. have time with the Lord

  252. and time with the Word,

  253. guess where you go?

  254. Not to Facebook.

  255. You wouldn't do that

  256. because Jesus is first.

  257. And you don't go to MSN

  258. or CBS

  259. or whatever else

  260. the news feed is.

  261. You don't even check the weather.

  262. You go right to the book,

  263. right?

  264. And all God's people say,

  265. yes, that's me.

  266. I'm there.

  267. It's the book that I want

  268. because I want to know Jesus

  269. more than the weather

  270. or what somebody posted, right?

  271. Paul says this.

  272. Listen, look at the passage.

  273. He says,

  274. I count everything as loss

  275. because of the surpassing worth

  276. of knowing Christ Jesus,

  277. my Lord.

  278. And so as you think

  279. about this business,

  280. we recognize that our knowledge

  281. of Christ can be deepened

  282. and that the knowledge

  283. of Christ being deepened

  284. comes about from a conscious

  285. and deliberate choice

  286. on our part,

  287. in our heart

  288. to put Him

  289. in that position

  290. of preeminence.

  291. I want you to understand,

  292. secondly,

  293. that our knowledge

  294. of Christ can be deepened

  295. by pursuing time

  296. with Him

  297. and obedience.

  298. By pursuing time

  299. with Him

  300. and obedience.

  301. Let me give you

  302. several things

  303. in relationship to this.

  304. Number one,

  305. if you're going to grow

  306. in knowing Christ,

  307. there must be

  308. a willingness to hear.

  309. Be humble to hear.

  310. It's very interesting

  311. when you stop

  312. and think about

  313. this business

  314. of picking up information

  315. about who the Lord Jesus

  316. actually is.

  317. It doesn't come by osmosis.

  318. Does anybody know

  319. what osmosis is?

  320. It's the transfer

  321. of something

  322. from a place

  323. of lesser density

  324. or how does that go?

  325. Help me here.

  326. Mark,

  327. spare me.

  328. From greater density

  329. to lesser density.

  330. There we go.

  331. Thank you.

  332. A PhD can help me anytime.

  333. So here we go.

  334. Osmosis is not

  335. how we gain information

  336. about the Lord Jesus Christ.

  337. Laying your pillow

  338. on top of the Bible

  339. and sleeping with the Bible there

  340. doesn't mean it's going

  341. to kind of work

  342. its way up into your brain

  343. and you're going

  344. to become more deeply affectionate

  345. with the Lord Jesus Christ.

  346. There has to be

  347. a willingness to hear

  348. who He is

  349. and that takes time.

  350. That takes time.

  351. It's very interesting

  352. when you stop

  353. and think about

  354. the issue of

  355. how we grow

  356. in knowing who God is

  357. and knowing about

  358. the Lord Jesus Christ

  359. that we recognize

  360. we are dependent

  361. upon revelation.

  362. We're dependent

  363. upon Him telling us.

  364. I think for a moment

  365. about the story of Job

  366. and in Job

  367. you have a man

  368. who was a good guy.

  369. He was an upright man

  370. and eschewed evil.

  371. You kind of look up

  372. the word eschewed.

  373. It means he kind of avoided it.

  374. He was into

  375. not doing all the bad things.

  376. But you know what?

  377. Job's understanding

  378. of God

  379. was kind of

  380. not where it needed to be

  381. and God allowed Job

  382. to go through

  383. all kinds of

  384. what?

  385. Heartache and difficulty.

  386. Chapter 38

  387. through 42.

  388. Every one of those chapters

  389. is God coming to Job

  390. and saying

  391. by the way Job

  392. it's time for you

  393. to listen up

  394. because Job

  395. was a little full of himself

  396. and why am I suffering

  397. these things

  398. and what's going on

  399. and why are you doing

  400. this to me?

  401. By the way

  402. did God ever answer

  403. Job's questions

  404. about why he was suffering?

  405. No.

  406. All God did

  407. in those chapters

  408. essentially

  409. was give Job

  410. a picture

  411. of God's

  412. great wisdom

  413. in particular

  414. in relationship

  415. to creation.

  416. Are there any other

  417. illustrations

  418. of God's wisdom

  419. and power

  420. besides creation?

  421. The answer is

  422. you bet.

  423. In those chapters

  424. we find Job

  425. first saying

  426. you know

  427. it's time for me

  428. to be quiet

  429. but then

  430. at the end

  431. of God's recitation

  432. of who he is

  433. in relationship

  434. to creation

  435. here's what Job says

  436. I have heard of you

  437. by the hearing

  438. of my ear.

  439. In other words

  440. there are some things

  441. I knew about you

  442. I'd heard

  443. but now my eye

  444. sees you.

  445. In other words

  446. I've gained

  447. further understanding

  448. and further insight

  449. into who you are.

  450. And so I would appeal

  451. to you this morning

  452. as you kind of

  453. look into the future

  454. to say to yourself

  455. one of the deliberate

  456. intentions of my life

  457. this year

  458. is going to be

  459. I by God's grace

  460. am going to grow

  461. in knowing Christ.

  462. That's my goal.

  463. That's my goal.

  464. I want you to understand

  465. also that we grow

  466. by being humble

  467. to obey.

  468. John chapter 15

    John 15:10

  469. verse 10

  470. let's look at that

  471. just for a moment

  472. keep your finger there

  473. in Philippians

  474. but I want you

  475. to go back

  476. to John chapter 15

    John 15 chapter mention

  477. if you keep

  478. my commandments

  479. you will abide

  480. in my love

  481. just as I've kept

  482. my father's commandments

  483. and abide in his love.

  484. If you keep

  485. my commandments

  486. you will abide

  487. in my love.

  488. You know

  489. one of the things

  490. that I kind of

  491. am flummoxed

  492. a little bit by

  493. today

  494. is I look at

  495. the general

  496. spiritual poverty

  497. of many many

  498. people in America.

  499. I was reading

  500. a Facebook post

  501. by an individual

  502. who at one time

  503. quite an effective

  504. speaker

  505. pastor

  506. pastor

  507. and the guy

  508. has drifted

  509. far away

  510. from the Lord

  511. and as I was

  512. as I was

  513. paying attention

  514. I don't know

  515. where his heart

  516. is for sure

  517. but as I read

  518. his recurring

  519. posts

  520. it seems that

  521. so much

  522. of the truth

  523. has been lost

  524. and just kind of

  525. laid aside

  526. and I thought

  527. what is behind

  528. all this?

  529. Well for one thing

  530. in order to grow

  531. in understanding

  532. who Christ is

  533. there must be

  534. a willingness

  535. to follow

  536. his instruction.

  537. Do you understand

  538. that?

  539. How many of you

  540. remember

  541. learning the

  542. multiplication tables

  543. and the addition

  544. tables?

  545. I mean it was

  546. just drudgery.

  547. Do you remember

  548. that?

  549. Flash cards.

  550. How many of you

  551. did flash cards

  552. besides me?

  553. Flash card

  554. hands up.

  555. Okay.

  556. Whoa!

  557. Real crowd here.

  558. I mean I got it.

  559. Okay put them down.

  560. Put them down.

  561. You know do you

  562. remember the dull

  563. business of two

  564. plus two equals

  565. what?

  566. Four.

  567. I mean yeah

  568. we've got it.

  569. But there were

  570. times when we

  571. kind of floundered

  572. with that basic

  573. information and

  574. some of us

  575. actually thought

  576. to ourself

  577. why do I need

  578. to do this?

  579. Some of us

  580. stayed in that

  581. state of why

  582. do I need

  583. to do this

  584. and then when

  585. we got on to

  586. a little more

  587. complex problems

  588. like you know

  589. N and P

  590. over blah blah

  591. you know

  592. it's way beyond

  593. me.

  594. I rely on others

  595. to help me

  596. with that kind

  597. of detail.

  598. But you know

  599. eventually we

  600. got caught out

  601. because we

  602. weren't willing

  603. to follow

  604. the line.

  605. Beloved I

  606. want you to

  607. understand this

  608. obedience is the

  609. key that unlocks

  610. the door of

  611. understanding.

  612. And if you're

  613. sitting here this

  614. morning and you're

  615. saying well listen

  616. I want to know

  617. more about Christ

  618. here's what I can

  619. tell you is going

  620. to happen.

  621. Listen to me

  622. carefully.

  623. You are in your

  624. journey of learning

  625. who Christ is

  626. going to have him

  627. speak to you

  628. and say hey

  629. it's time to stop

  630. doing this

  631. and it's time to

  632. start doing that.

  633. And when you

  634. say no to him

  635. guess what's

  636. going to happen?

  637. His voice gets

  638. softer and his

  639. voice gets

  640. repetitious.

  641. How many of you

  642. understand what I

  643. mean by repetitious?

  644. You know if you're

  645. not willing to

  646. obey him on point

  647. A he's not going

  648. to move on to

  649. point B and say

  650. well let point A

  651. go.

  652. He's going to keep

  653. on coming back

  654. to it.

  655. And so if you

  656. want to grow in

  657. understanding Christ

  658. there must be a

  659. willingness to hear

  660. and there must be a

  661. willingness to

  662. obey.

  663. I want to make one

  664. other point before

  665. we leave this

  666. here.

  667. Knowing him

  668. must come first.

  669. Make no mistake

  670. about it going

  671. back there to

  672. Philippians chapter

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  673. 3 we understand

  674. that Paul is

  675. laying out things

  676. here in a sense

  677. in a sequence

  678. that has some

  679. importance.

  680. I want you to

  681. know that Bible

  682. behavior and

  683. Bible obedience

  684. are important.

  685. But the

  686. contemporary pattern

  687. of providing

  688. instruction in

  689. certain behaviors

  690. without helping

  691. people understand

  692. the underlying

  693. issue of our

  694. relationship with

  695. Christ is

  696. ultimately pretty

  697. bankrupt and

  698. ineffective.

  699. Let me explain

  700. it this way.

  701. It is not an

  702. accident that

  703. Paul in

  704. Ephesians spends

  705. three chapters

  706. helping you and

  707. helping me

  708. understand the

  709. wonder of our

  710. relationship with

  711. Christ before he

  712. talks at all about

  713. the way in which we

  714. relate with one

  715. another.

  716. You see a husband

  717. who has not come

  718. to grips with the

  719. beauty of his

  720. relationship with the

  721. Lord Jesus Christ and

  722. is not influenced by

  723. his growing affection

  724. for Christ can never

  725. really love his

  726. bride much more than

  727. he loves the Lord

  728. Jesus Christ.

  729. Do you understand

  730. that?

  731. And so a reasonable

  732. wife who would like

  733. her husband to love

  734. her more, guess what

  735. she should be doing?

  736. She should be quietly

  737. encouraging his

  738. spiritual growth and

  739. doing everything she

  740. can in prayer to help

  741. him grow to be the

  742. man that God needs

  743. him to be because

  744. what?

  745. His love for her

  746. rests upon the

  747. foundation and the

  748. bedrock of his love

  749. for him.

  750. And to teach

  751. Ephesians 5 without

  752. teaching Ephesians 1,

  753. 2, 3 is to lay a

  754. very shallow and

  755. shaky moral bedrock.

  756. Let me have you look

  757. at another illustration

  758. of this and turn over

  759. in your Bible.

  760. We're talking here in

  761. 1 Thessalonians about

  762. the matter of moral

  763. purity.

  764. Moral purity is an

  765. ongoing battle in our

  766. culture today.

  767. Everywhere you turn you

  768. see the evidence of it.

  769. 1 Thessalonians chapter

    1 Thessalonians 4:3

  770. 4 verse 3.

  771. For this is the will of

  772. God, your sanctification.

  773. Boy, that sounds pretty

  774. good in the abstract.

  775. God's interest is that I

  776. grow to be more godly,

  777. more pure.

  778. And then Paul immediately

  779. cuts to the practical

  780. application.

  781. He says that you abstain

  782. from sexual immorality.

  783. All kinds.

  784. God has made the sexual

  785. communion of a husband

  786. and wife as a blessing

  787. in marriage.

  788. Outside of that, we are

  789. to abstain and to wait

  790. for God to be the one

  791. that provides the life

  792. partner for us.

  793. And so here is Paul

  794. writing to a church in a

  795. pagan culture.

  796. He says, hey, don't be

  797. doing what the rest of

  798. the unsaved pagan world

  799. is engaged in.

  800. And then he lays out for

  801. them.

  802. He comes down there in

  803. verse 5.

  804. He says, your behavior is

  805. not to be like the lust

  806. of the Gentiles.

  807. And what's the problem

  808. that the Gentiles have?

  809. Everybody smile.

  810. Listen.

  811. It's not that they don't

  812. know the rules.

  813. It's that they don't know

  814. God.

  815. Do you understand that?

  816. It's not that they don't

  817. know the rules.

  818. It's that they don't know

  819. God.

  820. The underlying problem

  821. with their moral behavior

  822. is that it is a reflection

  823. of the relationship or the

  824. absence of a relationship

  825. with the God of this

  826. universe.

  827. That's the reason that

  828. when Joseph was tempted

  829. by Potiphar's wife back

  830. in the book of Genesis,

  831. that when Joseph ultimately

  832. responded to that

  833. temptation, he said, how

  834. can I do this great

  835. thing against God?

  836. And so I want you to

  837. understand this morning as

  838. you think about the matter

  839. in Philippians of goal for

  840. this year, number one, my

  841. personal goal is I want to

  842. grow in knowing Christ.

  843. Knowing Christ.

  844. That's my goal.

  845. Write it down.

  846. Make it clear.

  847. Consciously and deliberately

  848. make that determination.

  849. And if you want to go out on a

  850. limb, say it to somebody

  851. else.

  852. Now what's the danger of

  853. telling somebody else that

  854. that's your goal?

  855. What's the danger?

  856. Accountability, but not only

  857. that, but sometimes when

  858. you're drifting left of

  859. center, they're going to

  860. remind you of that.

  861. Am I correct?

  862. So there you are being a

  863. little surly.

  864. How many of you understand

  865. what I mean by surly?

  866. Grumpy, sarcastic.

  867. Don't ever tell me.

  868. Don't ever tell me that

  869. sarcasm is your love

  870. language.

  871. That's a lie from hell.

  872. That's not Bible truth.

  873. And so there you are.

  874. You're being a little

  875. sarcastic, a little grumpy.

  876. And the person that you

  877. asked to pray for you about

  878. growing in your love for

  879. Christ says, hey, you're not

  880. doing very well today.

  881. How's that?

  882. So I encourage you.

  883. Go ahead.

  884. Write it down somewhere

  885. personally.

  886. But then step out on a limb and

  887. say to someone close to you that

  888. has teeth.

  889. You know what I mean by teeth?

  890. Posting it on Facebook is not

  891. the same as telling your

  892. husband, hey, I want you to

  893. pray for me that I grow in

  894. loving Christ.

  895. And here, here's the deal.

  896. And as this year progresses, I

  897. want you to let me know whether

  898. you see any signs of it.

  899. Let's go to the second one.

  900. Paul says that I may know him

  901. and the power of his

  902. resurrection.

  903. resurrection, the power of his

  904. resurrection.

  905. Now ask yourself the question,

  906. why is knowing his resurrection

  907. power important?

  908. Well, there's a reason that Paul

  909. puts it here in relationship to

  910. this matter of spiritual growth.

  911. I'm going to mention in broad

  912. terms several of the things that

  913. the resurrection has value to

  914. the believer in regards to, but

  915. then I'll come down and focus on

  916. one particular thing, namely that

  917. of our progressive sanctification and

  918. growing to be more like Christ over

  919. time.

  920. I do want you to understand that

  921. his resurrection is proof that

  922. his substitutionary death, he died

  923. in my place.

  924. How do I know that his death

  925. satisfied the righteous judgment of

  926. a holy God against my sin?

  927. His resurrection proves it.

  928. I have confidence that Jesus has

  929. paid my penalty and that that debt

  930. is satisfied because Christ rose from

  931. the dead.

  932. There's another thing that the

  933. resurrection provides to me as a

  934. believer.

  935. It provides to me great assurance of

  936. my own resurrection.

  937. Earlier this month, I was at the

  938. graveside with my family where we

  939. laid my father's body to rest,

  940. waiting for the day of the

  941. resurrection.

  942. And I can tell you this without any

  943. hesitation, I have confidence in the

  944. day that I will see the Lord Jesus

  945. Christ and I will also see my father

  946. face to face.

  947. Why?

  948. Because Jesus rose from the dead, I

  949. have confidence in the resurrection.

  950. But I want you to understand that the

  951. primary focus that Paul has this

  952. morning is on the matter of the

  953. resurrection's power being available

  954. for me in progressive sanctification or

  955. growing to be more like Christ.

  956. Turn back in your Bible, you're in the

  957. book of Philippians, turn back to

  958. Ephesians chapter 1 verse 19.

    Ephesians 1:19

  959. Ephesians chapter 1 verse 19.

    Ephesians 1:19

  960. One of two primary prayers that the

  961. apostle prays in Ephesians.

  962. And taking from verse 19, here is the

  963. apostle saying this.

  964. He says, let me kind of pick it up.

  965. He says there in verse 16, I do not

  966. cease to give thanks for you,

  967. remembering you in my prayers, that the

  968. God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the

  969. Father of glory, may give you a spirit

  970. of wisdom and of revelation in the

  971. knowledge of him, knowing Christ.

  972. Having the eyes of your hearts

  973. enlightened, that you may know what is

  974. the hope to which he has called you,

  975. what are the riches of his glorious

  976. inheritance in the saints, and what is

  977. the immeasurable greatness of his power

  978. towards us who believe, according to the

  979. working of his great might.

  980. In other words, hey listen, Paul's saying,

  981. I want you to get your hands around how

  982. wonderful the blessing of God is in

  983. relationship to the work that God is

  984. doing in you.

  985. Well, what power is available to help me

  986. grow to be different?

  987. Here's the truth.

  988. There's not a one of us that when we look

  989. privately in the mirror of our own soul,

  990. do not end up with a sense of, man, there

  991. are things that need to be changed.

  992. Would you agree with that?

  993. Yeah, I'm not where I need to be.

  994. I need to grow in grace.

  995. I need to grow to be more like Christ.

  996. How will that growth come about?

  997. Well, Paul argues here.

  998. He says you need to understand that the

  999. power that is available to help you

1000. change is the resurrection power that

1001. raised the Lord Jesus from the dead.

1002. I want to encourage you with that.

1003. So you think this morning about the fact

1004. that here you are, you're a person who is

1005. struggling with the reality of some

1006. pervasive sin in your life.

1007. Secret, nobody else knows about it maybe,

1008. but you're sitting there, man, how can I

  1009. change?

1010. You can change through the power of the

  1011. cross and the resurrection.

1012. The power that raised Jesus from the dead

1013. is available to raise you up in newness

1014. of life, in salvation, but also to begin

1015. the process of helping you grow in grace.

1016. So here's the blessed fact that I am

  1017. completely confident in.

1018. We who know Christ are not doomed to stay

  1019. slaves to our pasts.

1020. Can I say that slowly so you don't forget it?

1021. We who are in Christ Jesus are not doomed to

1022. stay slaves to our past.

1023. Contemporary psychology indicates that people

  1024. cannot escape their past.

1025. The fact of the matter is, is that if a man

1026. is in Christ Jesus, he is a what?

  1027. He is somebody different.

1028. And not only is he somebody different,

1029. but he also has the power of the Spirit of God,

1030. better yet, slap my mouth, it's not just the

1031. power of the Spirit of God, it's the Spirit of God.

  1032. Do you got that?

1033. It's better than just the power.

1034. It's the person of the Spirit of God in me.

1035. And why is he there?

  1036. Does anybody know?

1037. Well, there are a number of things, but one of the

1038. reasons he's there is to help me change.

  1039. I like that.

1040. And so this morning, as you stop and think about

1041. who wrote this letter, you stop and recognize that

1042. the man who writes this there in Philippians was at

1043. one time an incredibly arrogant and murderous

  1044. individual.

  1045. Individual, not individuals.

1046. He was a persecutor of the church.

1047. He was full of himself.

1048. And he came by the grace of God to realize the bankruptcy

  1049. of his own soul.

1050. And he was drawn to the cross.

1051. And his life continued to grow in grace and knowledge of the

  1052. Lord Jesus.

1053. If that power was available for Paul to change him from Saul to

1054. becoming Paul, is that power available for you this morning?

1055. And the answer is yes.

  1056. Yes.

1057. And so I want you to recognize that to know that power,

1058. to know that power, is to trust him to help you change and

1059. then see the change taking place in time.

1060. One of the advantages of getting older in the faith,

1061. now here's the truth, growing in grace is a little,

1062. it's like a roller coaster ride a little bit with an uphill

  1063. journey.

1064. A roller coaster ride goes how?

1065. Up, down, up, down, up, down, down, down, right?

  1066. Do you follow me?

1067. I mean, they're relying on gravity to take you where?

  1068. Down.

1069. Progressive sanctification is relying on grace and the power of

1070. the Holy Spirit to take you where?

  1071. Up.

1072. And if you kind of look and chart your life,

1073. you would see that there are ups and downs in the journey.

1074. How many of you realize that?

1075. There are ups and downs in the journey.

1076. Do I wish it was straight uphill?

  1077. Bang.

  1078. Yes.

  1079. Is it?

  1080. No.

  1081. But you know what?

1082. One of the privileges of being a 66 is I can see where the dots on

1083. the chart are going in the right direction and he gets the credit

  1084. for it.

1085. I love the blessing of being able to say to people who are caught in their sins,

1086. I've got good news for you.

1087. Jesus can save you and give you complete forgiveness for all of your sins.

1088. And not only that, you don't have to stay the way you are.

1089. You don't have to stay the way you are.

1090. That brings me to a third thing that we find there in the passage in Philippians.

  1091. Mark what it says,

1092. and may share his sufferings becoming like him in death.

1093. Let me take a moment and back up and have the larger picture here.

  1094. Here is Paul praying.

1095. Number one, he prayed for an intimate knowledge of Christ.

1096. He prayed for an understanding of the divine power that's available to help him

  1097. grow.

1098. But then he comes to this business also of the matter of suffering.

  1099. To what end?

1100. I want you to understand that the believer is called to be a living sacrifice

1101. worthy of his high calling.

1102. And so here's Paul who says,

1103. Hey, listen, I want to grow in knowing Christ.

1104. I want to grow in seeing the power of the resurrection work in my life.

1105. And I want to grow to the point that suffering and challenge and hardship is not something

1106. to be avoided, but it's something to be received for the sake of the kingdom and for the sake

  1107. of Christ.

1108. You see, when we share in his suffering, we become like him.

  1109. We grow through that.

1110. And I want you to understand that the one who was writing this, Paul, was someone who suffered

  1111. deeply.

1112. When he wrote the epistle to the church at Philippi, he was writing it in prison.

1113. And there is not a single note in this entire epistle of Paul kind of commiserating about how hard

1114. and how difficult his journey was.

1115. By the way, does anybody know how Paul's last lap in life played out?

1116. 2 Timothy, we find the apostle largely abandoned by the entire church that he had ministered to and raised up through the

  1117. grace of God.

1118. Most of them had turned their backs on Paul.

1119. And yet Paul here in the midst of all that hardship and suffering, he says,

1120. Man, I am ready to be offered up.

  1121. I've run my race.

  1122. I've kept the faith.

1123. And I'm looking forward to the day I'm going to see Christ.

  1124. Why?

  1125. Why?

1126. Because he understood who he was following and who he was serving.

1127. And he understood the value of the hardship and difficulty that he faced in life.

1128. Paul's suffering for Christ and for the gospel was a blessing to be desired rather than a pain to be avoided.

1129. So I want you to think with me just for a moment about what it means to suffer with Christ.

1130. Christ suffered in loving people that had no time for his love or his salvation.

1131. Do you ever find yourself small group leader, deacon, Sunday school teacher, youth leader?

1132. You find yourself investing in the lives of kids and lives of other people and you find yourself frustrated

1133. by the fact that they don't even seem to appreciate what you're putting into it.

1134. You are suffering in place of Christ and for him.

1135. Jesus also suffered with intentional rejection by those who most desperately needed him.

1136. Stop and think about that.

1137. Jesus suffered at the hands of those who most desperately needed him.

1138. One of the things that goes with ministry, whatever role you have and whatever place you have,

1139. you're going to find yourself investing repeatedly in individuals who desperately need the work of Christ in their life.

1140. And as you pour the ministry of the gospel into their lives, sometimes they're going to say,

  1141. Hey, no, thank you.

1142. In fact, it's going to go worse than that.

1143. They're going to say, Leave me alone.

1144. I want you to understand that Christ suffered because what he did was he revealed the light of man's heart

1145. or the real depravity of man's heart.

1146. And when he turned on the light, those who didn't like the light, guess what they did?

  1147. They hated him.

  1148. They hated him.

1149. I can think back to this last year and several of the incidents.

1150. Most of you know that I am not a frequent poster on Facebook.

1151. It's a rare situation that leads me to post something on Facebook.

1152. There's so much blather out there that I don't engage in it, but I do read a lot of it.

1153. And every now and then something will light me up to the point I say,

1154. You know, I think about this and I craft it over a period of days and finally put something out there.

1155. I can tell you some of the most scathing things I've ever had said to me have been said by people on Facebook

1156. in regards to things that I've said that were sweet and simple gospel truths.

  1157. Understand this.

1158. You're going to suffer for representing Christ faithfully.

1159. I want you to recognize this morning that Paul here says,

1160. I want to know him.

1161. I want to know his power.

1162. And I want to know the fellowship of suffering along with him in the ministry of the gospel.

1163. Is that your desire for this year?

  1164. Think with me.

1165. I want to grow in knowing Christ.

  1166. I can do that.

1167. But the practical part, I want to grow in understanding Christ's power to help me change.

1168. I need to be someone different than I am.

  1169. I can do that.

1170. I need to grow to be one who sees suffering not as something to be avoided,

1171. but something to be joyfully received,

1172. because when I am suffering for the testimony of Christ and the glory of his gospel,

1173. I am suffering according to the will of God.

1174. I want to be there.

1175. I want to be there.

1176. So this Sunday, as we think of our first Sunday together,

1177. I want to challenge you.

1178. Consciously and deliberately, without emotional fanfare,

1179. and with the brutal reality of the scriptures,

1180. which speaks authoritatively into the life of a believer.

1181. Do you understand what I just said?

1182. God's word has a right to tell you how to live and how to think.

1183. On the basis of the authority of the scripture,

1184. I encourage you to consciously and deliberately say,

  1185. Philippians chapter 3 verse 10,

    Philippians 3:10

1186. or one such verse like that will determine the year in front of me.

1187. And if you have the intestinal fortitude

1188. and a deliberate intention to be a person who grows in grace,

  1189. write it down.

  1190. Tell someone with teeth

1191. and ask them to help you track the work of grace in your life this year.

  1192. Let's close in prayer.

1193. Our Father God, this morning,

1194. as we think in particular of believers,

1195. of the blessing we have in our salvation,

1196. we understand that you have delivered us out of darkness into marvelous light.

1197. And you have set the year in front of us

1198. and called us through your spirit

1199. and through the authority of your word of God

1200. to be a people that are conscious and deliberate

1201. in pursuing a growing relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ

1202. and an understanding that we can count upon your power to help us change

1203. and a willingness to be sacrificial in servanthood.

1204. I pray, Lord, for your people this morning

1205. that as we have heard your word,

1206. that your spirit would take and chisel it firmly into the heart.

1207. that, Lord, in the year to come,

1208. it might be evident that we individually

1209. and we as a body of believers

1210. are growing in the grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  1211. And unbelievers watching us

1212. ask us a reason for the hope.

  1213. Believers who are struggling

1214. are encouraged by the evidence

1215. of progressive sanctification in our heart.

  1216. and we rejoice

1217. in seeing your power at work.

1218. We ask this in Jesus' name.

  1219. Amen.

1220. As John comes to lead us in our closing song,

1221. let me encourage you to stand, if you would, please.
