  1. Well, that was good singing.

  2. And it's an answer to prayer.

  3. How many of you pray ahead of the service?

  4. ! Raise your hand if you do.

  5. Pray ahead of the service.

  6. Would you raise your hand high so I can kind of see who it is that's praying in advance?

  7. Okay.

  8. I'm just...

  9. You know what I would like?

  10. Just do this so I can kind of see what it would be like visually.

  11. Everybody raise your hand.

  12. Just kind of raise it like this.

  13. Go ahead.

  14. Get it up.

  15. Hey, get your hand up.

  16. Okay.

  17. That's what it should look like.

  18. I mean, those who don't know Jesus, I can expect you to...

  19. I understand if you don't pray about the services.

  20. But if you know Christ, shouldn't you be begging for him to do a work among us?

  21. And all God's people, this is when Baptists should say amen.

  22. Okay.

  23. I mean, I should be praying.

  24. Okay.

  25. Okay.

  26. Listen, I would plead with you.

  27. Don't come to this hour without pleading for God to do a work.

  28. It's reasonable.

  29. It's understandable.

  30. It's appropriate.

  31. And so I would ask that if you know Christ, that you never come to a service anywhere

  32. without asking God to make your heart ready to hear the word

  33. and without asking God to help that earthy vessel that God has placed before you for that hour

  34. to be an instrument of the Holy Spirit, to minister the glory of Christ and make him supreme.

  35. Now, just as a sidebar, tomorrow morning at 840, I'm going to be preaching for 25 minutes

  36. to Madison Christian, and that is 25 minutes.

  37. I want you to know it can be done, and not today, but that's tomorrow.

  38. But I want you to pray for me, okay?

  39. And so next week, if I do remember, and I say how many of you are going to be prayed for the service next week,

  40. all of you that know Christ are going to raise your hands and say, I did, because it's a responsibility.

  41. I'm going to grow in being consistent in my prayer life for the preaching of the word of God

  42. and for the singing of God's people and for the supremacy of Christ

  43. when we gather to worship together.

  44. And I'll probably ask you, did you pray for me on Monday?

  45. Because I have the privilege of preaching to young people,

  46. and I will, as you know, I'll probably weave two things together.

  47. One is the gospel, and the other is the goodness of Christ's work in the life of the believer.

  48. I'm going to use Ephesians chapter 3, verse 14 through 19, one of those favorites for me.

    Ephesians 3:14–19

  49. We are together this morning to take the Lord's table,

  50. and these elements here in front, the bread and the cup,

  51. are really here as we understand from Scripture,

  52. in particular in 1 Corinthians chapter 11, don't turn there,

    1 Corinthians 11 chapter mention

  53. that these elements are here to remind us of some things.

  54. We forget things, don't we?

  55. Truthfully, we do.

  56. And Scripture makes it very clear that reminders are important.

  57. This morning in my personal devotions,

  58. I was reading through the account of Joshua crossing the Jordan into the promised land,

  59. and God gave instructions that when the people crossed through on dry land,

  60. one man from each of the tribes was to pick up a stone and pick that stone up

  61. and put it on his shoulder and stagger out and then set it down on the other side.

  62. And here's what it says.

  63. So that in the future, when your children say to you,

  64. what meaneth?

  65. That's the King James.

  66. Hey, what are these stones doing here?

  67. That's kind of the contemporary rendition.

  68. Why here?

  69. Well, we took those stones out of the River Jordan when God dried it up,

  70. stacked all the water up behind it, and we walked over on dry land.

  71. That's why these stones are here.

  72. We need reminders.

  73. And what we are being reminded of this morning

  74. is what Christ did to save us.

  75. You know, one of the things that is a way of kind of judging whether or not you need the reminder would be this.

  76. I'm not going to ask you to turn to your neighbor and say,

  77. I love Jesus.

  78. But, you know, here's the truth.

  79. Your genuine affection and love for Christ

  80. are an indicator of just how thankful you are for his salvation.

  81. And if you're kind of hearing, you know, well, you know, I'm here.

  82. Isn't he glad?

  83. The thing is, is do you love him?

  84. Does his love govern your life?

  85. And one of the purposes of the Lord's table

  86. is to kind of encourage our affection for the Lord Jesus.

  87. So this morning, what I would like you to do is just quietly, where you sit,

  88. just stay to yourself, and you can do it with your eyes open.

  89. Just say, according to Psalm 119, verse 18, here's what it says.

    Psalms 119:18

  90. It says,

  91. Open my eyes that I might behold wondrous truths out of your law.

  92. Do something for me,

  93. that I can see the beauty of your work and grace,

  94. and that that would be the thing that overwhelms me

  95. in the face of the adversity and the difficulty and the disappointments

  96. that I go through.

  97. I've got to go to work on Monday,

  98. and people there don't always like me.

  99. And things are going to break,

  100. and things are going to go bad,

  101. and life's going to have all these disappointments.

  102. And Jesus, this morning, I want to be reminded of how precious you are

  103. and how much you love me.

  104. I want you to dig in

  105. and get a hold of this cold heart

  106. and give me an affection for you.

  107. And so, with that prayer resonating in your heart,

  108. I would ask that you turn in your Bible to Isaiah chapter 53.

    Isaiah 53 chapter mention

  109. Isaiah chapter 53 is a passage that,

    Isaiah 53 chapter mention

  110. for believers, many of us know,

  111. all we like sheep have gone astray.

  112. It is a passage that is probably one of the most well-recognized Old Testament texts.

  113. In the Jewish community, it is one that is hardly known at all.

  114. And that's not really an accident,

  115. because it is one of the clearest indicators in the Old Testament of the Messiah

  116. and his redemptive work for us.

  117. The idea of him dying and being a substitution for our sin

  118. is undeniably clear in this passage,

  119. and it is a convicting passage.

  120. Keep your finger in Isaiah chapter 53.

    Isaiah 53 chapter mention

  121. I took you there to begin with,

  122. but turn back, if you would, just for a bit.

  123. We're just going to go for a second,

  124. but go to Acts chapter 8.

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  125. In Acts chapter 8,

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  126. we find a very interesting little situation

  127. where Philip ends up being taken by the Holy Spirit

  128. to minister to a guy who's kind of trudging along in a chariot,

  129. and he's reading the book of Isaiah.

  130. And guess what chapter he's in?

  131. Surprise.

  132. Surprise.

  133. Chapter 53 of Isaiah.

  134. And now, in verse 32, it says,

  135. Now the passage of the Scripture that he was reading was this.

  136. Like a sheep, he was led to the slaughter,

  137. and like a lamb before its shearer is silent,

  138. so he opened not his mouth.

  139. In his humiliation, justice was denied him.

  140. Who can describe his generation?

  141. For his life is taken away from the earth.

  142. And the eunuch said to Philip,

  143. About whom, I ask,

  144. does the prophet say this about himself or someone else?

  145. And as we look at that passage just for a moment,

  146. we understand that here is this Ethiopian eunuch

  147. who had traveled to Jerusalem to learn more about Judaism

  148. and to kind of grow in his budding faith

  149. and in the hope of the Messiah

  150. and his desire to have his heart satisfied

  151. is met on the road

  152. when Philip opens up the Scripture and says,

  153. Hey, this is talking about Jesus

  154. who came and lived and died

  155. and rose again for our sins.

  156. And so what I want us to do this morning

  157. is kind of ask the Holy Spirit

  158. to help us understand what it is

  159. that the Spirit of God communicates in Isaiah chapter 53.

    Isaiah 53 chapter mention

  160. Let's begin, first of all,

  161. with understanding the tragedy of an unjust rejection.

  162. As we take up Isaiah 53,

  163. we find that the early verses kind of move us to sympathy.

  164. Who's believed what he has heard from us

  165. and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?

  166. For he grew up before him like a young plant

  167. and like a root out of dry ground.

  168. He had no form or majesty that we should look at him

  169. and no beauty that we should desire him.

  170. You know, the average picture that most of us have

  171. of Jesus is some incredibly handsome kind of rugged dude

  172. that, you know, he's just the embodiment of perfection.

  173. The way Isaiah describes him is that he was so nondescript

  174. that had we been looking in the crowd,

  175. we would, ooh, there he is.

  176. Remember how Samuel the prophet

  177. was kind of challenged by what we see on the outside?

  178. I mean, after all, we are drawn to the outside.

  179. Isn't that right?

  180. Right.

  181. And here it says, this is the Holy Spirit kind of giving us,

  182. this is better than an artist's rendition

  183. because it's the Holy Spirit telling us the truth.

  184. It says, hey, we wouldn't have been impressed looking at him.

  185. Not only that, but when you read through the scriptures,

  186. you find that Jesus in his temperament and character

  187. was not this, you know, crowd-pleasing, you know,

  188. big stomping dude that, you know,

  189. whenever he walked into the room, he's like, ooh, there's Jesus.

  190. He was kind of a quiet guy.

  191. It says that a guttering wick he would not snuff out

  192. and a bruised reed he wouldn't break.

  193. He was a gentle and tender guy.

  194. And so you probably ask yourself,

  195. why in the world would someone that was so nondescript

  196. and didn't really go out of his way to offend people,

  197. why would he end up being hated and so abused

  198. and someone who made people angry and made them disgusted?

  199. How does a humble person end up like that?

  200. Well, I want you to understand that what the scriptures make very clear

  201. when we kind of piece the thing together

  202. is that Jesus was rejected because he addressed the world's sin.

  203. I want you to think about that just for a minute.

  204. Jesus was rejected because he pointed out the world's sin.

  205. Let me have you look at a couple passages

  206. that just kind of confirm this truth

  207. so you get it clearly in your own mind in the scriptures.

  208. Turn in your Bible to John 1.

  209. John 1.

  210. In that introductory portion of the book of John,

  211. we find there in verse 10 and 11 that the apostle says this,

  212. he was in the world and the world was made through him,

  213. yet the world did not know him.

  214. I mean, hey, the guy who did it all is in the room

  215. and nobody knows he's there.

  216. He came into his own, talking about the Jews,

  217. and his own people did not receive him.

  218. I mean, if anybody should have known who Jesus was,

  219. it was the Jews.

  220. And why?

  221. Because they had received the message of the prophets

  222. regarding the coming of the Messiah.

  223. If you go back to the very beginning in Genesis,

  224. you remember after Adam and Eve sinned,

  225. God said there would come someone who would bring redemption.

  226. And very interestingly,

  227. if you kind of read in between the lines, so to speak,

  228. the first child that Adam and Eve had,

  229. do you know what Eve was thinking?

  230. She was thinking,

  231. this is the one.

  232. This is the one.

  233. This is the one who's going to help us in our mess.

  234. And over and over again throughout the generations,

  235. the idea and the ambition and the desire

  236. of the sincere believer in the Old Testament was,

  237. someday God will provide the perfect sacrifice,

  238. the Messiah, who will be our Redeemer and our Savior.

  239. And so here is Isaiah sharing the truth about Jesus.

  240. And when Jesus came, he was rejected by the Jews.

  241. And really, when you ask yourself,

  242. let me understand that a little bit,

  243. or go forward a little bit.

  244. You're in John, so stay there just for a second

  245. and go to John 3, verse 19.

    John 3:19

  246. By the way, it doesn't hurt to look at it.

  247. Everybody smile at me.

  248. I'm talking to you.

  249. Do you know why we have Bibles in the pews?

  250. How many of you, just put your finger on a Bible in the pew.

  251. Go ahead, just touch it.

  252. I don't want people touching hands doing this.

  253. I mean, let's be good about this.

  254. Just touch the Bible in front.

  255. The reason we have Bibles in the pews

  256. is so you can get a hold of them

  257. if for some reason you forgot your own.

  258. It's all right.

  259. Go ahead and use one of these.

  260. In fact, listen to me.

  261. If you want to take one home,

  262. if you don't know where your Bible is this morning,

  263. take it home.

  264. Take the one that we have in the pew home.

  265. We have more.

  266. We'll replace the one you take

  267. and we'll be tickled pink that you took.

  268. Hey, take a Bible home if you don't have one.

  269. You got that?

  270. Everybody heard me say that.

  271. Well, anyway, let's go back to verse 19.

  272. It says, and this is the judgment,

  273. the light, that's Jesus' code, right?

  274. The light has come into the world

  275. and people, what?

  276. They love the darkness.

  277. They love the darkness.

  278. What?

  279. I don't mind when people expose other people's sins.

  280. In fact, I don't mind helping them do that.

  281. But my sins?

  282. Here's what it says.

  283. It says,

  284. they love the darkness rather than the light

  285. because their works were evil.

  286. How many of you have ever been driving down the road

  287. and you hit that place where, you know,

  288. the sheriff's department decide to set up

  289. one of those little, you know, radar devices

  290. that sits on two wheels and what does it say?

  291. You know, they always put it,

  292. providentially,

  293. they always put it, you know,

  294. about 100 yards or 100 feet

  295. behind a posted speed sign, right?

  296. The limit on this road is 35 miles an hour

  297. and then right down the road,

  298. they have this other thing that's going to blink,

  299. blink, blink,

  300. and as you zip along,

  301. what's it saying?

  302. And you're driving 53.

  303. And you think,

  304. why is that there?

  305. I don't need that.

  306. Until you see somebody else park just a little further

  307. and you think,

  308. you know, okay.

  309. So here's what it says.

  310. It says,

  311. they don't like the light

  312. because their deeds are evil.

  313. And there in the passage in verse 20,

  314. it says,

  315. for everyone who does wicked things hates the light.

  316. Why was Jesus rejected?

  317. It's because he turned on the light

  318. and exposed the reality of men's hearts

  319. and they hated seeing the truth about themselves.

  320. When I deal with marital counseling

  321. and often when Pastor Saul deals with counseling

  322. and Pastor Andrew deals with counseling,

  323. one of the things that we end up in the situation

  324. is saying to the people who are in our office

  325. is you got a problem.

  326. Now, they're fully persuaded

  327. that the other party who came with them has problems

  328. and it's kind of like an epiphany.

  329. It's kind of like,

  330. what, me?

  331. Me?

  332. Yeah.

  333. In fact,

  334. not only do you have a problem,

  335. but you're the only one who can fix it.

  336. And unless you fix your problem,

  337. the problem is probably going to stay

  338. about as bad as it is.

  339. And here is John telling us

  340. that people,

  341. when they were brought into

  342. face-to-face conviction

  343. with the reality of their sin,

  344. they didn't like it.

  345. And kind of the idea

  346. that Jesus is some ancient bearded dude

  347. floating around

  348. just kind of smack-talking with people

  349. is not the Bible story.

  350. Do you follow that?

  351. I mean, he was right in people's space

  352. and he wasn't arrogant or argumentative,

  353. but his heart,

  354. which communicated

  355. the glory of his Father,

  356. brought conviction

  357. to the heart of every person.

  358. He fully revealed

  359. God's judgment against sin

  360. and man's absolute inability

  361. to save himself.

  362. And so,

  363. when you kind of stop

  364. and think about this

  365. humble individual

  366. who is rejected,

  367. understand that really behind it

  368. is the second thing

  369. we need to find out,

  370. and that is that

  371. there is a terror in sin.

  372. We tend to not think about sin

  373. as being all that bad,

  374. at least the sins we do.

  375. I mean, for a fact,

  376. we do them over and over again.

  377. Isn't that right?

  378. And we have a wonderfully

  379. well-developed vocabulary

  380. about our sins.

  381. Instead of calling them things

  382. like blatant, arrogant,

  383. stubborn, rebellious acts

  384. against the holy God

  385. and the creator of this universe,

  386. we call our sins

  387. by things like,

  388. I made a mistake.

  389. I mean, everybody does, right?

  390. I drop my pencil.

  391. I kick my dog.

  392. You know,

  393. whatever thing.

  394. I made a mistake.

  395. Or we have a well-developed,

  396. I mean, the way I am

  397. is because of the people

  398. that I live around.

  399. If you knew my parents,

  400. you would sin too.

  401. I mean,

  402. you'd have the same problems.

  403. Do you follow?

  404. Hey, everybody has a reason

  405. for being the jerk they are.

  406. I was sharing with Connie

  407. the other day.

  408. Pastor Saul was in there

  409. and we were talking

  410. a little bit about ministry,

  411. and I said that

  412. there was a time in my life

  413. where I had discipled

  414. an individual

  415. who was a dentist

  416. in one of our

  417. state correctional institutions.

  418. How many of you

  419. understand what I just said?

  420. And he worked

  421. day in and day out

  422. as a dentist

  423. dealing with people

  424. who had advanced

  425. dental difficulties,

  426. and he said,

  427. you know,

  428. one of the interesting things

  429. of working in the prison system

  430. is that he never ever

  431. up to that point

  432. had met anybody

  433. that deserved to be there.

  434. everybody that he ever

  435. dealt with

  436. had been put into prison

  437. unjustly

  438. because of other people's

  439. behavior or lies

  440. or whatever else,

  441. and they had never

  442. done anything

  443. to deserve the treatment

  444. they were receiving.

  445. And so,

  446. one of the things

  447. that Isaiah

  448. helps us understand

  449. is that sin

  450. is a pretty ugly thing.

  451. It really is.

  452. And I want you

  453. to get your hands

  454. around this

  455. by thinking about it

  456. in personal terms.

  457. When we sin,

  458. we attempt

  459. to un-God God.

  460. Sin is a monstrous

  461. offense

  462. against the creator

  463. and the God

  464. of this universe.

  465. Every sin

  466. that we ever commit

  467. shouts things like,

  468. you're not in charge.

  469. How many of you

  470. ever had your kids

  471. say that to you

  472. at one point?

  473. You know,

  474. it's like they let you

  475. know that you're not in charge.

  476. Oh, yes I am.

  477. And there's the door

  478. if you don't think so.

  479. You know,

  480. well,

  481. people say,

  482. you're not in charge

  483. or what you think

  484. is not important.

  485. I'm amazed

  486. at how often

  487. we don't really realize

  488. we're saying that

  489. when we say that.

  490. Do you understand

  491. what I'm saying?

  492. Whenever we sin,

  493. it's not just an accident,

  494. it's a conscious,

  495. deliberate choice

  496. to do certain things.

  497. And you see this

  498. in children so clearly.

  499. Wally,

  500. don't put your finger

  501. in the light socket.

  502. You know,

  503. that's what you say.

  504. And Wally goes over there

  505. and just to kind of

  506. amplify the opportunity,

  507. he digs through your drawer

  508. and finds a paper clip

  509. so he can get in there

  510. deep enough.

  511. And then he pushes

  512. that thing in there

  513. and what happens?

  514. The law of justice

  515. helps him understand

  516. that what you said

  517. was incredibly brilliant.

  518. But you know what?

  519. You tell kids,

  520. don't do it

  521. and what do they think?

  522. I mean,

  523. you have parents here.

  524. You ever had a kid?

  525. Don't do this.

  526. Watch me.

  527. You know?

  528. And so,

  529. what you think

  530. is not that important.

  531. You're unkind.

  532. You just don't want me

  533. to have my way.

  534. That's true.

  535. You're so controlling.

  536. You're just so petty.

  537. Well,

  538. if I had different parents

  539. that loved me more,

  540. I would get my way.

  541. Yeah,

  542. and man,

  543. man,

  544. man,

  545. man.

  546. And then you have this little,

  547. I hate you.

  548. How many of you

  549. ever had children

  550. say that to you?

  551. How many of you

  552. have I hate to tell you

  553. I've had it?

  554. My kids grew up

  555. by the grace of God,

  556. but I've had a couple

  557. of my children

  558. say to me on occasion

  559. when I would not

  560. let them have their way

  561. or I was disciplining them

  562. for some of their

  563. sinful misbehavior,

  564. they would,

  565. this was kind of

  566. early in the stream.

  567. They learned

  568. as they grew

  569. that it wasn't

  570. a good thing

  571. to say that

  572. because what it did

  573. was it was a force multiplier.

  574. How many of you

  575. understand what I mean?

  576. Isn't that code,

  577. force multiplier?

  578. I hate you.

  579. Really?

  580. Well,

  581. I'm going to help you

  582. with that.

  583. And here's the thing.

  584. I don't want us

  585. to miss the point.

  586. Here is,

  587. the fact is

  588. our heart hates

  589. the justice

  590. and the holiness of God

  591. and he tells us

  592. what's right

  593. and what's wrong.

  594. I want you to understand

  595. that the supreme

  596. offense of sin

  597. brings the supreme

  598. wrath of God.

  599. Why is it

  600. that

  601. somebody else

  602. had to die

  603. in my place

  604. for my sin?

  605. Why is that?

  606. It's because

  607. sin is a

  608. supremely

  609. offensive thing

  610. to a supremely

  611. infinitely

  612. holy God.

  613. So,

  614. there you are

  615. in McDonald's.

  616. You're hungry

  617. and a fry drops

  618. on the floor.

  619. Some of you

  620. are going to kick it

  621. under the table

  622. and pretend

  623. that it didn't happen.

  624. I'm going to pick it up

  625. because I paid for it.

  626. I'm sorry.

  627. I know you're

  628. just going off

  629. on that one

  630. but I grew up

  631. in boarding school

  632. in India

  633. and let me tell you

  634. something.

  635. I'm figuring

  636. that floor

  637. is infinitely cleaner

  638. than whatever

  639. I was in

  640. when I was growing up

  641. and it's like

  642. I paid for that puppy

  643. and I'm having it.

  644. I may dust it off

  645. just to be careful.

  646. But,

  647. if I'm at

  648. Ruth Chris Steakhouse

  649. and I've never

  650. been there

  651. in case you're

  652. wondering

  653. but Ruth Chris Steakhouse

  654. is where you're

  655. supposed to go

  656. when you want

  657. really good steak

  658. and,

  659. you know,

  660. so you're at

  661. Ruth Chris Steakhouse

  662. and the potato

  663. falls off my plate

  664. and falls on the floor

  665. I'm saying,

  666. hey,

  667. take it back.

  668. See,

  669. the little sins

  670. that we think

  671. are okay

  672. are horribly

  673. offensive to God

  674. and we don't think

  675. that

  676. but they are.

  677. dealing with

  678. an individual

  679. who every third

  680. or fourth word

  681. to me is

  682. I'll be honest

  683. with you.

  684. I've said to him,

  685. hey,

  686. let me try to

  687. understand this.

  688. Are you saying

  689. you're not honest

  690. between those things?

  691. Look at Isaiah

    Isaiah 53:4

  692. chapter 53

  693. verse 4 and 5

  694. would you please?

  695. Surely he has

  696. borne our griefs

  697. and carried

  698. our sorrows

  699. and we esteemed

  700. him stricken,

  701. smitten,

  702. by God

  703. and afflicted.

  704. He was wounded

  705. for our transgressions.

  706. He was crushed

  707. for our iniquities

  708. and with his stripes

  709. we are healed.

  710. Those words

  711. describe

  712. the judgment

  713. of a holy God

  714. against every sin.

  715. and I want to tell you

  716. apart from the sense

  717. of the terror

  718. of God's holy judgment

  719. we remain

  720. completely indifferent

  721. to sin.

  722. That's the truth.

  723. True gospel preaching

  724. declares the holiness

  725. of God

  726. and the blackness

  727. of the human heart.

  728. One of the joys

  729. that I have

  730. in gospel preaching

  731. and sharing the gospel

  732. with individuals

  733. wherever it is

  734. whether it's here

  735. or in a car

  736. with someone

  737. or on a work environment

  738. wherever it is

  739. you know

  740. one of the things

  741. I like to say

  742. is that guess what

  743. Jesus stands ready

  744. to forgive you

  745. for all of your sins

  746. and wipe away

  747. the debt

  748. and the shame

  749. of your life

  750. instantly.

  751. I like

  752. and I know

  753. that to be true.

  754. Yesterday

  755. I was driving back

  756. from teaching

  757. a group of deacons

  758. over in Dayton

  759. in one of our

  760. sister churches

  761. and as I was praying

  762. and thinking about

  763. this morning

  764. for some strange reason

  765. my little pea brain

  766. began to think about

  767. some of the wicked things

  768. I did as a child

  769. and as a young man

  770. and I wasn't

  771. it wasn't like

  772. I thought

  773. let me see

  774. let me see

  775. what kind of bad things

  776. did I do

  777. I had such a variety

  778. that I

  779. there's lots of choices

  780. and I was just

  781. driving along

  782. and you know

  783. I found myself

  784. for a moment

  785. just overwhelmed

  786. with the shame

  787. and guilt

  788. for some of the things

  789. I had done

  790. and then I thought

  791. to myself

  792. and those things

  793. have been forgiven

  794. because Jesus died

  795. and rose again

  796. and he put his blood

  797. over top

  798. of those offenses

  799. and you know me

  800. by the way

  801. I'm a kind of

  802. an emotional guy

  803. you figured that one out

  804. it's like

  805. I was going from tears

  806. to joyful tears

  807. you know

  808. it's like

  809. man

  810. Jesus has forgiven me

  811. and I don't have to have

  812. that burden

  813. and that debt

  814. and that shame

  815. and that fear

  816. of judgment

  817. weighing on my soul

  818. and I know for certain

  819. that all my sins

  820. have been forgiven

  821. because of Christ

  822. it's gone

  823. it's gone

  824. Spurgeon wrote

  825. something that I posted

  826. in the bulletin

  827. on Wednesday night

  828. and I want to recite it here

  829. and I want you to think

  830. with me about

  831. what he had to say

  832. possibly much of the

  833. flimsy piety

  834. the word piety

  835. is talking about

  836. sense of concern

  837. for godliness

  838. possibly much of the

  839. flimsy piety

  840. of the present day

  841. arises from the ease

  842. with which men attain

  843. to peace and joy

  844. in these evangelistic days

  845. hey

  846. try God

  847. too many

  848. think lightly

  849. of sin

  850. therefore

  851. think lightly

  852. of the Savior

  853. he who stood

  854. before God

  855. and has been

  856. convicted and condemned

  857. with a rope

  858. about his neck

  859. is the man

  860. to weep

  861. for joy

  862. when he is

  863. pardoned

  864. to hate

  865. the evil

  866. of which he

  867. has been forgiven

  868. and to live

  869. with a desire

  870. to honor the

  871. Redeemer

  872. with whose blood

  873. he's been cleansed

  874. and so

  875. this morning

  876. as we

  877. look at

  878. these elements

  879. and I want you

  880. to think with me

  881. about them

  882. we're going

  883. to take

  884. bread

  885. that reminds us

  886. that Jesus

  887. died

  888. to pay

  889. the penalty

  890. for my sins

  891. do you understand

  892. that that's what

  893. you're taking

  894. when you take

  895. that bread

  896. you're saying

  897. Jesus died

  898. in my place

  899. he satisfied

  900. the debt

  901. of my sin

  902. and if your heart

  903. truthfully

  904. is not affected

  905. with affection

  906. for the Lord

  907. Jesus Christ

  908. at that moment

  909. when you think

  910. about that

  911. I got to tell you

  912. there's something

  913. that's not right

  914. that's

  915. something's wrong

  916. I'm not telling you

  917. you're not saved

  918. but here's the

  919. purpose of this

  920. table

  921. it is to

  922. refresh

  923. and to kindle

  924. and to stir

  925. our affections

  926. for the Lord

  927. of glory

  928. who has saved

  929. us

  930. and has died

  931. in our place

  932. and if you

  933. are not

  934. affected

  935. by the thought

  936. of him

  937. taking your place

  938. you don't think

  939. much of where

  940. you were

  941. and you know

  942. what the cup

  943. says

  944. this is

  945. I made a promise

  946. it's called

  947. the cup

  948. of the new

  949. covenant

  950. and the cup

  951. of the new

  952. covenant

  953. says

  954. this whole

  955. business

  956. of salvation

  957. is not

  958. Tim's doing

  959. or your doing

  960. but it is

  961. the work

  962. of God

  963. he has

  964. done

  965. a work

  966. in drawing

  967. me

  968. first of all

  969. to the misery

  970. of seeing

  971. the blackness

  972. of my heart

  973. and realizing

  974. I cannot

  975. save myself

  976. and crushing

  977. me with the truth

  978. I stand

  979. condemned

  980. before a holy

  981. God

  982. and then

  983. opening up

  984. to me

  985. the sweetness

  986. of the gospel

  987. that says

  988. and there is

  989. complete forgiveness

  990. in the blood

  991. of Christ

  992. I'm going to

  993. ask the men

  994. to come

  995. as we come

  996. to this table

  997. this morning

  998. and let me

  999. encourage you

  1000. to know

  1001. that

  1002. as we take

  1003. these elements

  1004. this bread

  1005. and this cup

  1006. they are

  1007. things

  1008. that those

  1009. who know

  1010. the Lord

  1011. Jesus Christ

  1012. should take

  1013. and

  1014. if you would

  1015. sit just

  1016. for a moment

  1017. men

  1018. I would

  1019. encourage you

  1020. to take them

  1021. with a clear

  1022. conscience

  1023. with a sensitivity

  1024. and the scriptures

  1025. encourages us

  1026. to come to this

  1027. table

  1028. having

  1029. asked the Lord

  1030. to search our

  1031. hearts

  1032. to see whether

  1033. there is any

  1034. unconfessed sin

1035. and let me tell you

  1036. something

  1037. one of the things

  1038. Tim Kenoyer knows

  1039. is it's fairly

  1040. easy to let

  1041. sin kind of

  1042. glom on

  1043. you know

  1044. get attached

  1045. and it's like

  1046. I'm okay

  1047. with that

  1048. and then my

  1049. wife will help

  1050. me know

  1051. no you're not

  1052. or the Holy

  1053. Spirit will say

  1054. no you're not

  1055. and so this

  1056. morning

  1057. we need to pray

  1058. and say

  1059. is there something

  1060. I need to deal

  1061. with so that

  1062. when I take

  1063. these elements

  1064. I don't take

  1065. them in that

  1066. shameful state

  1067. of indifference

  1068. to what

  1069. offends God

  1070. let's pray

  1071. and ask him

  1072. to give us

  1073. a clear conscience

  1074. holy father

  1075. this morning

  1076. as we come

  1077. to this table

  1078. and we remind

  1079. ourselves that

  1080. Jesus died

  1081. in our place

  1082. we understand

  1083. that to take

  1084. this bread

  1085. and take

  1086. this cup

  1087. is in one

  1088. way

  1089. it's really

  1090. a public

  1091. affirmation

  1092. we're saying

  1093. to other people

  1094. I know Jesus

  1095. as my savior

  1096. and he's real

  1097. to me

  1098. and he's important

  1099. I've been saved

  1100. by him

  1101. my life

  1102. belongs to him

  1103. and I live

  1104. my day

  1105. and draw

  1106. my breath

  1107. so that

  1108. the way

  1109. I live

  1110. and the way

  1111. I talk

  1112. and the things

  1113. I think

  1114. all reflect

  1115. back favorably

  1116. on Jesus

  1117. and holy

  1118. father

  1119. this morning

  1120. if as we

  1121. prepare our

  1122. hearts

  1123. our conscience

  1124. troubles us

  1125. and we

  1126. recognize

  1127. that that

  1128. anger

  1129. that we're

  1130. quite comfortable

  1131. with and think

  1132. is justified

  1133. is offensive

  1134. to you

  1135. or that

  1136. private

  1137. struggle

  1138. with lust

  1139. that nobody

  1140. else knows

  1141. about

  1142. that bothers

  1143. you

  1144. or that

  1145. covetousness

  1146. that is never

  1147. satisfied

  1148. with things

  1149. grieves

  1150. !

  1151. that we

  1152. would humble

  1153. ourselves this

  1154. morning and ask

  1155. that you would

  1156. first of all

  1157. forgive us

  1158. and then that you

  1159. would do

  1160. whatever it

  1161. takes to

  1162. cut that

  1163. out

  1164. and that's

  1165. our prayer

  1166. that this

  1167. morning would

  1168. be a time

  1169. and a place

  1170. where we

  1171. as believers

  1172. rededicate

  1173. ourselves

  1174. with thanksgiving

  1175. to the one

  1176. who paid the

  1177. price for our

  1178. sins

  1179. and we

  1180. ask this in

  1181. Jesus name

  1182. amen
