  1. There is something that is unbelievably blessed in being able to hold up this book and say to turn in it.

  2. What frames our life, what frames our hope in eternity, is what God in his grace has revealed to us through his scriptures.

  3. Furthermore, it is our blessing to know that when we who know Christ take this book in hand,

  4. we are not left to rely merely on intellectual ability to comprehend the sweetness of Christ.

  5. Next, we may rely upon the enabling of the Spirit of God, me in preaching with your prayerful attention,

  6. and you hearing with the enabling of the Spirit that the word that we study together may, first of all, strike the heart,

  7. and secondly, frame the life.

  8. I want you to take a moment with me and come to the Lord in prayer,

  9. asking that his Spirit would quicken our study and my preaching to the glory of Christ.

  10. Our Father God, this morning, as we gather as your people, we do so with thanksgiving,

  11. that were it not for your grace,

  12. were it not for your work in bringing Christ Jesus into the world to be the Savior of the world,

  13. were it not for your work in bringing us to that point of conviction,

  14. were we understanding the darkness and the shamefulness of our heart,

  15. like an individual discovering the reality of their own soul sickness,

  16. were it not for you drawing us to understand that we, by our own effort and goodness,

  17. could not save ourselves, were it not for that,

  18. we would not be here this morning to be worshipers.

  19. And we are thankful that you, first of all, convicted us of our sin,

  20. and then secondly, drew us to the place that we, seeing our hopelessness,

  21. cried out upon the Lord Jesus Christ and asked him to save us.

  22. And you've blessed us with eternal life.

  23. You've blessed us with confidence in an eternal home.

  24. You've blessed us with the indwelling ministry of the Spirit of God,

  25. who is there in the life of the believer to encourage, to sustain, to strengthen,

  26. to give understanding to your Scripture.

  27. And so we, with humility, ask his help this morning.

  28. And it is my prayer that the preaching of the Word would be marked by the enabling of the Spirit,

  29. and that through his power, there would be individuals this morning that are here,

  30. that are drawn to the cross, recognizing their need for salvation,

  31. and crying out to Jesus to be their Savior.

  32. And that believers who are here that are struggling with their walk and their joy and their confidence

  33. would have their hearts lifted to know that Jesus, indeed,

  34. is able to help them in the day of trial and need.

  35. That we, together, would be encouraged as we rejoice in Christ

  36. and look forward to the day that we are going to see him face to face.

  37. And that is our prayer this morning we ask in Jesus' name.

  38. Amen.

  39. Well, we are looking at John chapter 3, verse 31 through 36,

    John 3:31–36

  40. and we are at a place where John the Baptist's ministry in the book of John

  41. is going to kind of drift back to the background.

  42. John was, as we found in chapter 1, a forerunner or an announcer,

  43. someone who went in front of Jesus and said,

  44. Hey, the King is coming, and He is supremely important,

  45. and this is the reason why.

  46. Where we are now is that John finishing his ministry,

  47. in all practical terms, at least in the book of John,

  48. we find that John the Baptist is laid aside.

  49. And yet, we are at a point where this ministry,

  50. in coming to a conclusion,

  51. makes its strongest statement about who Jesus is,

  52. at least from the mouth of John the Baptist.

  53. Let me have you stop just for a moment

  54. and remember what it says in John chapter 20, verse 31.

    John 20:31

  55. How many of you know, without turning,

  56. what the overarching purpose of the book of John is?

  57. What is it?

  58. These things are written, help me,

  59. that you may know.

  60. In other words, I'm telling you these things

  61. so you can get your hands around the information

  62. of who Jesus is for this purpose,

  63. that you might believe in Him and have everlasting life.

  64. Yesterday, as I was pumping gas,

  65. I happened to bump into a guy that knew me.

  66. And he says, How are you doing?

  67. I said, Well, I'm doing pretty good.

  68. I'm trying to think, Oh, who, Lord, is this?

  69. You know, I don't know still.

  70. But he says, Yeah.

  71. It's all right.

  72. I'll forget you.

  73. Give me enough time.

  74. But anyway, he's talking about visiting the church.

  75. He says, Man, your people sing.

  76. Well, praise God.

  77. I'm glad.

  78. You know, people who know Jesus

  79. have a reason to kind of hoop it up.

  80. Would you agree with that?

  81. Just to give you an illustration,

  82. and it's a very poor one,

  83. but I would imagine that,

  84. what is that song that they sing after football games?

  85. I've only been one time.

  86. It's like, what is it, Carmen, Ohio?

  87. I'll bet you after the national championship,

  88. they actually sang it enthusiastically as a team.

  89. You know, it's like, We're into this.

  90. And this guy was, we're pumping gas there,

  91. and I'm concentrating on doing my job.

  92. And he's, Yeah, your people are singing.

  93. They're great.

  94. They're blowing it out.

  95. I said, Well, praise the Lord for that.

  96. And then I had a chance to go where?

  97. Talk about Jesus.

  98. And the fact that the gospel is what changes us

  99. from being kind of dullards

  100. to being someone a little enthusiastic

  101. in the Lord Jesus Christ, right?

  102. And so here we are.

  103. We're working our way through the book of John,

  104. and we're dealing with this underlying

  105. and recurring theme.

  106. Who is Jesus, and what's he all about?

  107. And every piece of information chosen

  108. that John the apostle chose to write

  109. is written for this explicit purpose

  110. that you who sit under the hearing of the word of God

  111. and read the scriptures can be brought to the point

  112. of saying, Hey, I know who Jesus is,

  113. and I accept him as my Lord and Savior,

  114. or I have nothing to do with him, and so what?

  115. I mean, the fact of the matter is

  116. is that Bible preaching, follow me here,

  117. either brings people to a point of saying what?

  118. Yes or no to the truth that's been explained plainly.

  119. And so as we come to John's last great statement,

  120. there is a connectedness between the previous verse,

  121. and put your finger on it just for a minute.

  122. He must increase, and I must decrease.

  123. He must increase, and I must decrease.

  124. I debated back and forth about giving a little lesson

  125. on vocabulary, and I will.

  126. This is known as an axiom.

  127. An axiom is just a truth that is so undeniably truthful

  128. that you can't get away from it.

  129. I mean, here, gravity happens.

  130. That's an axiom.

  131. Do you know what?

  132. Now, the truth of the matter is, is this verse is more certain

  133. and more binding than gravity.

  134. How do I know that?

  135. If I were to go far enough up,

  136. I would reach the point where gravity doesn't happen.

  137. What I do know is that the fact of the increasing glory of Christ

  138. for now and all eternity is an undeniable fact that is irreversible,

  139. and it is there for me to revel and rejoice in and enjoy.

  140. And John the apostle, working through what John the Baptist had to say,

  141. you remember the disciples came to him in kind of petty attitude.

  142. He, you know what?

  143. That guy you baptized, you know, he's getting all the credit,

  144. and people are following him, and they're not doing anything with you.

  145. John says, what's the deal?

  146. He must increase, and I must decrease.

  147. Now, with that axiom in place,

  148. we find in the remaining verses,

  149. John's last testimony to the supremacy and significance of Christ.

  150. And these verses are part of this larger picture of the apostle

  151. explaining who is Jesus,

  152. so that you can believe on him and have everlasting life.

  153. And so, first of all, as we look at these verses,

  154. I want you to recognize first the person of Christ.

  155. There in verse 31, it says,

  156. He who comes from above is above all.

  157. He who is of the earth belongs to the earth

  158. and speaks in an earthly way.

  159. He who comes from heaven is above all.

  160. Remember, John the Baptist is now fleshing out

  161. or expanding this statement,

  162. He must increase.

  163. So why must he increase?

  164. Well, the obvious reason is,

  165. is that because of where he came from.

  166. And keep your finger there in John chapter 3

    John 3 chapter mention

  167. and just turn back a little bit.

  168. Go to John chapter 1.

    John 1 chapter mention

  169. As John the apostle starts into his gospel,

  170. he says,

  171. First, in the beginning was the Word,

  172. and the Word was with God,

  173. and the Word was God.

  174. He was in the beginning with God.

  175. All things were made through him,

  176. and without him was not anything made that was made.

  177. So we understand,

  178. John makes it clear to us,

  179. that Jesus Christ is indeed

  180. the second person of the Trinity.

  181. He is God himself.

  182. Over there, and also in chapter 3, verse 13,

  183. we find a very similar tone,

  184. and just mark it, if you will,

  185. in John 3, 13, it says,

  186. no one has ascended into heaven

  187. except he who descended from heaven,

  188. the Son of Man.

  189. In other words,

  190. nobody else really has

  191. firsthand empirical evidence

  192. of what heaven is like

  193. and who God really is

  194. in particular detail,

  195. like Jesus has.

  196. And so, while it is true

  197. that the Son of God came to earth

  198. and took on human flesh

  199. for all eternity,

  200. the recognized fact that we see here

  201. is that Jesus is divine.

  202. Yes, all man and all God.

  203. Hey, can you put your hands

  204. around that one, really?

  205. All man and all God.

  206. We can't, but the truth is,

  207. in the Bible,

  208. it tells us that Jesus

  209. is all man and all God,

  210. and here's the fact.

  211. Jesus is divine,

  212. divine,

  213. and he is the express revelation

  214. of the triune God.

  215. There's no one like him.

  216. And because Jesus is the Son of God,

  217. it is right for him to increase.

  218. Why should he become more significant?

  219. Why should he take up

  220. all the oxygen in the room?

  221. Why is it that we will spend

  222. all of eternity

  223. worshiping and praising him?

  224. I remember having a conversation

  225. last week with someone

  226. who said to me,

  227. I'm kind of,

  228. I'm struggling with understanding

  229. what eternity is going to be like.

  230. I mean, you know,

  231. I mean, just sitting around

  232. thinking about Jesus.

  233. I'm like, ugh.

  234. You know, I didn't say it that way,

  235. but it's like, hey,

  236. if you're not real familiar with him

  237. and he doesn't take up

  238. much of your time today,

  239. I mean, you know, hey,

  240. three minutes,

  241. I did do, what is that,

  242. daily bread.

  243. I mean, hey, I'm good.

  244. You know, I've given God

  245. a little bit of time here,

  246. and if he kind of gets

  247. a little two or three minutes

  248. on a periodic basis,

  249. the idea of spending

  250. all the time forever

  251. is like, whoa,

  252. I'm not sure I'm good with that.

  253. Will there be iPads in heaven?

  254. Will there be angry birds in heaven?

  255. You know, whatever it is

  256. that you occupy your time

  257. when you're really engaged,

  258. and so here is John saying,

  259. hey, he's from above.

  260. He's supremely significant.

  261. I want you to think about this with me.

  262. You can know

  263. where your spiritual growth is

  264. by checking to see

  265. if he is growing

  266. in significance in your life.

  267. Will you think with me about that

  268. just for a moment?

  269. You can know

  270. where you are

  271. in your spiritual growth.

  272. How am I doing?

  273. Am I moving uphill?

  274. Will you can know

  275. whether or not

  276. there's spiritual progress

  277. taking place in your life,

  278. whether or not

  279. Christ is truly growing

  280. to occupy

  281. a more and more

  282. significant place

  283. in your life.

  284. If you're still consumed

  285. with your own ambitions

  286. and your vices,

  287. if you're obsessed

  288. with your own importance

  289. and what other people

  290. think of you,

  291. you've got a ways to go

  292. because here's the truth

  293. of the matter.

  294. Jesus came from above

  295. and he is supremely significant

  296. because of that.

  297. Now just as John talked

  298. about Jesus

  299. first in verse 30,

  300. remember what he said there,

  301. he said he must increase,

  302. I must decrease.

  303. He does the same thing.

  304. He first of all talks about Jesus

  305. and said he's from above,

  306. he must increase.

  307. I am from below,

  308. I must decrease.

  309. And so I want you to think with me

  310. just for a moment

  311. about this decreasing nature

  312. of humanity

  313. and who we are.

  314. When John the Baptist said,

  315. I must decrease,

  316. he followed it up by saying,

  317. I'm from the earth.

  318. I'm from the earth.

  319. And making that statement,

  320. he was kind of referencing

  321. the reality of the fact

  322. that all of us here

  323. live very brief

  324. and shallow lives.

  325. Is that not true?

  326. It's appointed unto man,

  327. once to die,

  328. and after that,

  329. the judgment.

  330. In Psalm 90,

  331. it says that the average lifespan

  332. is between 70 and 80 years,

  333. and there is a card

  334. for Jessa Bartley

  335. that you can sign

  336. out there in the foyer.

  337. She's going to be 97 this week.

  338. And by the way,

  339. don't,

  340. I'm not going to be at the door

  341. saying,

  342. did you sign the card?

  343. I may,

  344. but I want that thing

  345. scrawled all over the place,

  346. okay?

  347. Not many of us

  348. make it to 97.

  349. Give her an attaboy,

  350. okay?

  351. Thank Jesus for it,

  352. by the way.

  353. Okay,

  354. but John says,

  355. I'm of the earth.

  356. What is he really talking about?

  357. He's talking about the fact,

  358. I'm out of here someday.

  359. And in Genesis chapter 3,

    Genesis 3:19

  360. verse 19,

  361. it says,

  362. from dust you came,

  363. and from dust you,

  364. or to dust you will return.

  365. And so here is John the Baptist

  366. bearing testimony to the fact

  367. that his life is marked by brevity,

  368. Christ is marked by deity.

  369. Furthermore,

  370. there's something else

  371. that John knew

  372. that he bore witness to

  373. when he said there in verse 31,

  374. he who is of the earth

  375. belongs to the earth

  376. and speaks in an earthly way.

  377. Turn over in your Bible

  378. to 2 Corinthians chapter 4,

    2 Corinthians 4:7

  379. verse 7.

  380. Have you ever stopped to ask

  381. why it is that I tend to illustrate

  382. with Bible passages?

  383. It's not an accident.

  384. Here's the answer to that question.

  385. I am persuaded

  386. that God has the best ideas,

  387. and so my job is kind of to say,

  388. hey,

  389. let's find out what God thinks.

  390. 2 Corinthians chapter 4,

    2 Corinthians 4:7

  391. verse 7,

  392. kind of just spot it for you

  393. in broad terms.

  394. Paul is talking about ministry,

  395. and he says,

  396. listen,

  397. we have this treasure in what?

  398. In earthen vessels.

  399. Paul was not the only person

  400. who was persuaded

  401. of his earthiness,

  402. of his frailty,

  403. of his inadequacy in ministry,

  404. and if you still doubt that case,

  405. you can stop and remind yourself

  406. that at one point

  407. in John's ministry,

  408. he had second questions about Jesus.

  409. Are you the one or not?

  410. John,

  411. as wonderful as he was,

  412. as a messenger of the Lord of hosts,

  413. nevertheless struggled

  414. with the reality

  415. of his own humanity,

  416. and so as you think about this,

  417. I think we should recognize

  418. that Jesus is supremely worthy

  419. of listening to

  420. and of exalting

  421. because he is God,

  422. and John the Baptist is saying,

  423. hey,

  424. it makes sense for me to diminish

  425. because I really am nobody

  426. in comparison.

  427. Now,

  428. I want you to recognize

  429. that sometimes people

  430. take their earthiness

  431. to be an excuse

  432. for habitual

  433. and recurring sin.

  434. Our earthiness

  435. should prompt humility

  436. as well as tenderness

  437. in dealing with the sins

  438. of other people

  439. and not the attitude

  440. of,

  441. hey,

  442. ain't no big deal.

  443. I mean,

  444. hey,

  445. everybody's doing it,

  446. you know,

  447. so recognize

  448. when John says this

  449. is an expression of humility,

  450. not indifference

  451. to the reality of sin.

  452. So as you see here

  453. from the very beginning,

  454. John the Baptist

  455. says he's closing up

  456. his ministry,

  457. he says,

  458. let me tell you something

  459. about Jesus.

  460. He is eternal.

  461. And all the rest of us

  462. are very frail

  463. and temporary.

  464. Well,

  465. in the verses

  466. that follow now,

  467. when we look here

  468. in verses 32 through 35,

  469. we're going to find

  470. an expanded version

  471. or expanded declaration

  472. of the supremacy of Christ

  473. and John bears testimony

  474. to several significant things.

  475. So think about it.

  476. What are the testimonies

  477. about Christ?

  478. For one,

  479. we find there

  480. in verse 32

  481. and put your finger on it,

  482. John chapter 3,

    John 3:32

  483. verse 32,

  484. he bears witness

  485. to what he has seen

  486. and heard.

  487. Jesus spoke

  488. on the basis

  489. of first-hand knowledge.

  490. Why would we pay

  491. such careful attention

  492. to what Jesus has to say?

  493. Why should we do that?

  494. Well,

  495. the obvious reason

  496. is that he is the one

  497. who,

  498. of all individuals,

  499. comes with absolute,

  500. accurate information

  501. information

  502. on a place

  503. that you and I

  504. haven't been

  505. and from a person

  506. that,

  507. at the end of the day,

  508. we haven't really seen,

  509. have we?

  510. Jesus is the express revelation

  511. of the person

  512. of the Godhead.

  513. Now,

  514. I want you,

  515. earlier this week

  516. as I was studying,

  517. I found myself tempted

  518. to kind of launch on that

  519. and stay the whole time

  520. in this one statement

  521. about Jesus

  522. being the absolute,

  523. accurate revelation

  524. of the Godhead.

  525. But I want you to look

  526. at a small slice

  527. of that reality

  528. by keeping your finger

  529. in John

  530. and go over to Hebrews.

  531. Turn in your Bible

  532. to Hebrews,

    Hebrews 1:1–4

  533. chapter 1,

  534. verse 1 through 4.

  535. In chapter 1 of Hebrews,

  536. we begin with the opening statement

  537. that the author makes.

  538. He says this,

  539. long ago,

  540. as many times

  541. and in many ways,

  542. God spoke to our fathers

  543. by the prophets.

  544. But in these last days,

  545. He has spoken to us

  546. by His Son.

  547. After that statement,

  548. in these last days,

  549. He has spoken to us

  550. by His Son,

  551. the author of Hebrews

  552. gives us

  553. seven different statements

  554. about the supremacy

  555. of Christ

  556. as the revealer

  557. of the eternal glory of God.

  558. Why should we listen

  559. to Jesus?

  560. Because,

  561. hammer,

  562. hammer,

  563. hammer,

  564. seven strokes

  565. that nail the subject down

  566. and make us

  567. completely persuaded

  568. Jesus is the one

  569. who is worthy

  570. to listen to.

  571. Second reason

  572. why we should listen

  573. to Jesus

  574. as we look here

  575. in the passage

  576. going back to John

  577. is that Jesus spoke

  578. with perfect

  579. and complete accuracy.

  580. accuracy.

  581. He spoke as one

  582. who had come

  583. from heaven

  584. and understood

  585. with absolute perfection

  586. who the Father is,

  587. who the triune God is,

  588. and He spoke

  589. with undeniable

  590. authority

  591. and accuracy.

  592. But secondly,

  593. He spoke with

  594. complete

  595. and perfect accuracy.

  596. There's not a single word

  597. that was ever said

  598. by Jesus

  599. that was not something

  600. that the Father

  601. intended for Him

  602. to say.

  603. How many of you

  604. say things

  605. that you wish

  606. you didn't say?

  607. Okay,

  608. out here.

  609. A couple of you,

  610. I know.

  611. The rest of you

  612. are probably near perfect,

  613. but most of us

  614. are like,

  615. ah,

  616. don't do that.

  617. Okay?

  618. I want you to understand

  619. that Jesus spoke

  620. with perfect

  621. and complete accuracy.

  622. Go back to John

  623. because we want

  624. to see this.

  625. It says this

  626. in verse 32,

  627. He bears witness

  628. to what He has seen

  629. and heard,

  630. yet no one

  631. receives His testimony.

  632. Whoever receives

  633. Jesus' testimony

  634. sets His seal

  635. to this,

  636. that God

  637. is true.

  638. Jesus spoke

  639. completely

  640. about the truth

  641. of God.

  642. And when

  643. the Word of God

  644. tells us something

  645. about God,

  646. whether we like it

  647. or not,

  648. whether we agree

  649. with it or not,

  650. whether we think

  651. it's a good idea

  652. or it's something

  653. that should be changed,

  654. at the end of the day,

  655. it is God's Word

  656. and it is absolutely

  657. reliable.

  658. It is what it is

  659. and we settle it

  660. and that's what

  661. God has to say.

  662. I want you to understand

  663. that when Jesus spoke,

  664. He wasn't just kind

  665. of chattering

  666. to fill the time.

  667. How many of you

  668. have ever been

  669. in a situation

  670. where you were

  671. responsible for leading

  672. a group

  673. and you ask one

  674. of those open-ended

  675. questions

  676. and everybody got

  677. that blank stare

  678. like I'm not answering?

  679. Have you ever been there?

  680. It was like,

  681. and what you try

  682. to do,

  683. it's a mistake

  684. most of the time,

  685. you try to fill

  686. the emptiness

  687. with just a little drivel.

  688. It's a blah, blah,

  689. blah, blah, blah, blah,

  690. blah, blah, blah, blah,

  691. and you're just saying

  692. things that really

  693. don't amount to anything.

  694. Jesus didn't chatter

  695. just to hear Himself

  696. speak

  697. or to occupy

  698. the moment

  699. while He was waiting

  700. for His disciples

  701. to get it.

  702. Having said that,

  703. you're obviously thinking

  704. the logical question is,

  705. where's that in the Bible?

  706. Is that what you're thinking?

  707. Everybody's smiling at me.

  708. I mean,

  709. the logical thing

  710. for godly people to do

  711. when a pastor

  712. makes a statement

  713. is what?

  714. Oh, yeah?

  715. Where is that?

  716. Oh, well,

  717. thank you.

  718. I'm glad you asked.

  719. Let's go to John 8.

  720. John 8,

    John 8:28

  721. verse 28.

  722. I don't know.

  723. You may even want

  724. to take a pencil

  725. and pen

  726. and underline this.

  727. Jesus said to them,

  728. when you have lifted up

  729. the Son of Man,

  730. then you will know

  731. that I am He

  732. and that I do nothing

  733. on my own authority

  734. but speak,

  735. J-U-S-T,

  736. what?

  737. Just?

  738. Speak just

  739. as the Father taught me.

  740. Did Jesus go off page?

  741. And the answer is,

  742. no.

  743. Did Jesus ever make

  744. any kind of erroneous statements

  745. that really,

  746. well,

  747. I'm not really sure

  748. that should have been

  749. taken literally,

  750. blah, blah, blah.

  751. No,

  752. when Jesus said it,

  753. it was Jesus speaking

  754. and it was exactly

  755. what God the Father

  756. wanted Him to say.

  757. Let's look further

  758. at this.

  759. John 12,

    John 12:49

  760. verse 49.

  761. John 12,

    John 12:49

  762. verse 49.

  763. For I have not spoken

  764. on mine own authority,

  765. but the Father who sent me

  766. has made,

  767. has Himself given me

  768. a commandment,

  769. what to say

  770. and what to speak.

  771. It reminds me,

  772. years ago,

  773. when Judith and I were,

  774. is Judith in here?

  775. She's,

  776. hey,

  777. good to see you.

  778. Judith and I

  779. are going on vacation,

  780. just checking to see

  781. if she's here,

  782. she's driving.

  783. But,

  784. years ago,

  785. when Judith and I

  786. were living over

  787. in Angaro,

  788. our kids,

  789. particularly our boys,

  790. would play in the basement

  791. and our boys

  792. were,

  793. were much more aggressive

  794. in that,

  795. you know,

  796. smack down,

  797. knock down kind of things,

  798. you know,

  799. and girls are into dolls

  800. and boys are into,

  801. you know,

  802. thumping chests

  803. and it's like trying to see

  804. whatever.

  805. And every now and then,

  806. my son,

  807. my older son,

  808. was significantly older

  809. than my younger son

  810. and sometimes there would be

  811. just moderate injuries,

  812. you know.

  813. And I'd,

  814. I'd hear this thing

  815. kind of playing out,

  816. devolve,

  817. you know,

  818. it's kind of,

  819. and I'd,

  820. I'd shout down the steps

  821. and say,

  822. what's going on?

  823. You know what the standard

  824. answer was?

  825. 100% of the time,

  826. nothing.

  827. Nothing.

  828. We're good.

  829. And then I would send

  830. one of my daughters,

  831. you know,

  832. I was like,

  833. why get out of the chair,

  834. you know,

  835. Heather,

  836. go.

  837. Daddy wants to know

  838. what you guys are doing.

  839. I mean,

  840. do you think she was going

  841. down there on her own

  842. initiative?

  843. And the answer is,

  844. no.

  845. Do you think she was coming

  846. with her own message like,

  847. hey,

  848. Joe and Sam,

  849. will you two be nice

  850. to each other?

  851. You know,

  852. that's not what it was.

  853. It was like,

  854. what are you doing?

  855. Dad said.

  856. Here's the deal.

  857. Jesus is making it clear

  858. to us that what he had

  859. to say was not just

  860. his own opinion.

  861. It was what God

  862. wanted him to say.

  863. If Jesus should be heard

  864. because he spoke exactly

  865. what the Father wanted

  866. him to say,

  867. then those earthen vessels

  868. who speak for him

  869. and do not wonder

  870. from the text

  871. should be listened to

  872. carefully.

  873. And as a result of that,

  874. one of the things

  875. that should characterize

  876. those who preach the word

  877. is that they talk

  878. less about themselves

  879. and more about him.

  880. Less about their own

  881. experiences and more

  882. about the authority

  883. and the sufficiency

  884. of Christ.

  885. Do you understand that?

  886. Keep that in mind.

  887. Let's come to the third

  888. lesson that I want you

  889. to see.

  890. This is indicting.

  891. Do you know what

  892. indicting means?

  893. It kind of dings me

  894. a little bit as I've

  895. been studying and praying

  896. and then illustrating,

  897. unfortunately.

  898. But let's go to the

  899. third point.

  900. You know it ahead of time

  901. because it flashed up

  902. on the board.

  903. Jesus spoke in the

  904. fullness of the Spirit.

  905. Okay?

  906. For he whom God has sent

  907. utters the words of God

  908. for he gives the Spirit

  909. without measure.

  910. For he gives the Spirit

  911. here.

  912. Here's another passage

  913. that deserves a full launch.

  914. What is the characteristic

  915. of speaking

  916. through the enabling

  917. of the Spirit?

  918. We won't do that

  919. this morning

  920. but I do want you

  921. to recognize

  922. that speaking

  923. through the enabling

  924. of the Spirit of God

  925. is something that

  926. should characterize

  927. all Bible preaching.

  928. It should also be

  929. one of the things

  930. that you pray for

  931. when you pray for me

  932. or you pray for whoever

  933. this evening

  934. Pastor Saul

  935. is going to

  936. hey by the way

  937. it would be better

  938. for you to show up

  939. and pray for him

  940. than to stay home

  941. and watch the

  942. shopping channel

  943. and pray for him.

  944. Right?

  945. I mean do you

  946. understand the choices?

  947. So one of the reasons

  948. why you should pray

  949. for those who are

  950. preachers of the Word of God

  951. is because they do have

  952. the treasure in earthen vessels

  953. and what you want to do

  954. is pray that

  955. by the Spirit of God

  956. their earthiness

  957. would be a little diminished.

  958. No man

  959. apart from our Lord Jesus

  960. will ever speak

  961. as Jesus did

  962. in the complete fullness

  963. of the Spirit.

  964. Why is that?

  965. For one

  966. we can grieve the Spirit.

  967. Would you agree with that?

  968. I don't have to remind you

  969. who know the Scriptures

  970. that it says

  971. grieve not the Holy Spirit.

  972. In other words

  973. I can do things

  974. that grieve the Holy Spirit

  975. and if I am grieving

  976. the Holy Spirit

  977. is the Holy Spirit

  978. then going to help me

  979. as I speak on his behalf?

  980. I got to get the grief issue out.

  981. Deal with it.

  982. Another thing is this

  983. is that we can quench

  984. the Spirit.

  985. We can on a recurring basis

  986. say no

  987. I don't want to listen to that

  988. I don't want to do that

  989. I'm not interested in that

  990. and as a result of that

  991. that the Holy Spirit's ministry

  992. in enabling us

  993. to proclaim

  994. the glory of Christ

  995. can be diminished.

  996. The Spirit quickened

  997. every single word

  998. Jesus spoke.

  999. Now having said that

  1000. earlier this morning

  1001. I said something

  1002. that was not prompted

1003. by the Spirit of God.

1004. I'll tell you what it was

1005. because when I sat down there

  1006. I thought to myself

  1007. Tim

  1008. stop

  1009. what I did.

  1010. Here's what I said.

  1011. I said something

  1012. about raising hands

1013. and I want you to understand

  1014. God in his

  1015. infinite wisdom

1016. did not make all of us

  1017. to be exactly alike.

  1018. Do you understand that?

  1019. I married a girl

  1020. wonderful

  1021. 44 plus years

  1022. I think

  1023. is it 44

  1024. where are you?

  1025. Yeah.

  1026. We're going towards 45.

1027. In case you didn't know

  1028. I am a marginally

  1029. emotional person.

  1030. What that tells you

  1031. is that Judith

  1032. is as mellow

  1033. as they come.

  1034. And for me

  1035. to look at her

  1036. and say

  1037. what's the deal

  1038. with you?

  1039. And for her

  1040. to look at me

  1041. and say

  1042. what is wrong?

  1043. So here's the deal.

  1044. All I want

  1045. is for God's people

  1046. to worship

  1047. in spirit

  1048. and in truth.

  1049. How you do that

  1050. should not be something

1051. that I flap my gums

  1052. about a little less.

  1053. Do you follow

  1054. what I'm saying?

  1055. Bear with me.

  1056. That's a little bit

  1057. of the earthiness

  1058. and when an illustration

  1059. and I didn't come

  1060. this morning

  1061. intending to do that.

  1062. I'm struck

  1063. by the fact

  1064. that every single

  1065. word that Jesus

  1066. said was like

  1067. an arrow

  1068. in the hands

  1069. of a mighty man.

  1070. It hit the target

  1071. and it made

  1072. an eternal difference.

  1073. Now

  1074. I have prayed

  1075. about this

  1076. so I'm going

  1077. to say it.

  1078. I would also

  1079. caution those

  1080. who buy into

  1081. the idea

  1082. that the Holy Spirit

  1083. is behind

  1084. the meaningless

  1085. babbling

  1086. and mutterings

  1087. that pass off

  1088. for charismatic

  1089. gifts

  1090. and speaking

  1091. in tongues

  1092. and here's why.

  1093. If Jesus

  1094. never said

  1095. a single word

  1096. that was not

  1097. understandable

  1098. and for the sake

  1099. of exalting

  1100. the supremacy

  1101. of his father

  1102. then why do we

  1103. come off with

  1104. the idea

  1105. that this

  1106. muttering

  1107. and babbling

  1108. that cannot

  1109. be discerned

  1110. and has no

  1111. spiritual outcome

  1112. really is significant

  1113. apart from

  1114. just doing it.

  1115. Now

  1116. am I going

  1117. to throw stones

  1118. at people

  1119. that do it?

1120. No, no, no, no, no

  1121. but I won't say this

  1122. it's not

  1123. of the Holy Spirit.

1124. How do I know that?

  1125. The Holy Spirit

  1126. is interested

  1127. in making Jesus

  1128. look good

  1129. in letting you

  1130. see him.

  1131. Every single

  1132. word that

  1133. Jesus said

  1134. was designed

  1135. by the Father

  1136. to lift up

  1137. the glory

  1138. and the supremacy

  1139. of the Father

  1140. in heaven

  1141. and people

  1142. walked away

  1143. every time

  1144. Jesus opened

  1145. his mouth

  1146. not every time

  1147. but you know

  1148. when they walked

  1149. away they said

  1150. we have never

  1151. heard anyone

  1152. talk like him

  1153. and what was he

  1154. doing?

  1155. He was speaking

  1156. in language

  1157. that people

  1158. could understand

  1159. and he was

  1160. convicting them

  1161. with that language

  1162. fourth

  1163. Jesus spoke

  1164. as the beloved

  1165. of the Father

  1166. look at John

  1167. the Father

  1168. loves the Son

  1169. and has given

  1170. all things

  1171. into his hand

  1172. the love

  1173. of the Father

  1174. for our Lord

  1175. Jesus Christ

  1176. is a magnificent

  1177. channel

  1178. through which

  1179. the glory

  1180. flows

  1181. I want you to

  1182. turn with me

  1183. just for a moment

  1184. to a passage

  1185. kind of frame this

  1186. out and understand

  1187. it

  1188. keep your finger

  1189. in John

  1190. because we are

  1191. coming back there

  1192. but John

    John 13 chapter mention

  1193. chapter 13

  1194. John chapter 13

    John 13:21–25

  1195. verse 21

  1196. through 25

  1197. this is at

  1198. the last supper

  1199. when Jesus

  1200. is celebrating

  1201. Passover

  1202. with his disciples

  1203. for the last time

  1204. and you will remember

  1205. and I'm not going

  1206. to have you turn

  1207. there but you'll

  1208. remember that

  1209. in the flow

  1210. of the supper

  1211. he stops

  1212. and says this

  1213. he says

  1214. one of you

  1215. is going

  1216. to betray me

  1217. this is a pretty

  1218. significant statement

  1219. and pretty

  1220. significant moment

  1221. because in a

  1222. very unusual

  1223. manner

  1224. the disciples

  1225. actually hear

  1226. what Jesus

  1227. said

  1228. and they kind

  1229. of take it

  1230. to heart

  1231. most of the time

  1232. when the disciples

  1233. heard Jesus

  1234. saying things

  1235. they were thinking

  1236. they hoped

  1237. that John

  1238. would hear it

  1239. or that Peter

  1240. would hear it

  1241. or that one

  1242. of the other

  1243. disciples

  1244. excluding them

  1245. would get the

  1246. memo

  1247. how many of you

  1248. have ever been

  1249. listening to a sermon

  1250. and thought

  1251. man I really hope

  1252. my husband

  1253. hears this one

  1254. in fact you even

  1255. nudge him

  1256. just in case

  1257. he's dozed off

  1258. and you know

  1259. that you're

  1260. helping the Holy

  1261. Spirit

  1262. like hey

  1263. Bubba

  1264. it's you

  1265. he's talking

  1266. to

  1267. okay

  1268. in this case

  1269. and you can

  1270. find it in Luke

    Luke 22 chapter mention

  1271. chapter 22

  1272. okay

  1273. they say

  1274. am I the one

  1275. and actually

  1276. it's in Matthew

    Matthew 26 chapter mention

  1277. chapter 26

  1278. that they say

  1279. am I the one

  1280. and then in Luke

    Luke 22 chapter mention

  1281. chapter 22

  1282. they look to each

  1283. other and they say

  1284. is it you

  1285. are you going

  1286. to betray him

  1287. are you doing

  1288. this

  1289. you see

  1290. first

  1291. am I doing

  1292. it

  1293. second

  1294. are you doing

  1295. it

  1296. then we come

  1297. up to the

  1298. golden moment

  1299. that we're

  1300. referring to

  1301. in John

    John 13 chapter mention

  1302. chapter 13

  1303. look at this

  1304. passage

  1305. John chapter

    John 13:21

  1306. 13

  1307. verse 21

  1308. after saying

  1309. these things

  1310. things

  1311. Jesus was

  1312. troubled in his

  1313. spirit and

  1314. testified

  1315. truly truly

  1316. I say to

  1317. you

  1318. one of you

  1319. will betray

  1320. me

  1321. the disciples

  1322. looked at

  1323. one another

  1324. uncertain of

  1325. whom he

  1326. spoke

  1327. one of his

  1328. disciples

  1329. whom Jesus

  1330. loved

  1331. was reclining

  1332. at the table

  1333. close to

  1334. Jesus

  1335. Simon Peter

  1336. motioned him

  1337. and asked

  1338. motioned to

  1339. him to ask

  1340. Jesus of

  1341. whom he

  1342. was speaking

  1343. so that

  1344. disciple

  1345. leaning back

  1346. against Jesus

  1347. said to him

  1348. Lord

  1349. who is it

  1350. Jesus

  1351. answered

  1352. it is

  1353. he to

  1354. whom I

  1355. will give

  1356. the morsel

  1357. of bread

  1358. when I

  1359. have dipped

  1360. it

  1361. and so

  1362. when he

  1363. had dipped

  1364. the morsel

  1365. he gave

  1366. it to

  1367. Judas

  1368. the son

  1369. of Iscariot

  1370. do you

  1371. follow this

  1372. I want

  1373. you to

  1374. recognize

  1375. this

  1376. here are

  1377. the disciples

  1378. and in

  1379. their desire

  1380. to understand

  1381. really what

  1382. was going

  1383. on

  1384. they asked

  1385. someone

  1386. who was

  1387. close

  1388. to

  1389. interpret

  1390. what was

  1391. being said

  1392. I want

  1393. you to

  1394. understand

  1395. one of the

  1396. characteristics

  1397. of love

  1398. love reveals

  1399. all that

  1400. there is

  1401. isn't that

  1402. right

  1403. and

  1404. love

  1405. doesn't hold

  1406. back secrets

  1407. one of the

  1408. things that

  1409. I think is

  1410. important in

  1411. marriage is

  1412. that there

  1413. be no

  1414. secrets

  1415. I mean

  1416. after all

  1417. doesn't the

  1418. Bible say

  1419. and is not

  1420. the Bible

  1421. reliable and

  1422. trustworthy

  1423. that the two

  1424. shall become

  1425. what

  1426. what

  1427. what

  1428. one flesh

  1429. no secrets

  1430. with one

  1431. flesh

  1432. I am who

  1433. I am

  1434. my wife

  1435. knows me

  1436. she is who

  1437. she is

  1438. and I know

  1439. her

  1440. and God

  1441. intends that

  1442. that love

  1443. relationship

  1444. is one that

  1445. that has a

  1446. level of

  1447. transparency

  1448. and sweetness

  1449. that

  1450. that

  1451. cannot take

  1452. place apart

  1453. from that

  1454. and so

  1455. here is

  1456. Jesus

  1457. saying

  1458. or here is

  1459. John the

  1460. Baptist

  1461. saying

  1462. because the

  1463. father loves

  1464. Jesus

  1465. he can be

  1466. completely

  1467. relied upon

  1468. to communicate

  1469. everything that

  1470. we know

  1471. the love

  1472. of the

  1473. father

  1474. communicates

  1475. freely

  1476. and openly

  1477. with

  1478. Christ

  1479. one other

  1480. illustration

  1481. because I

  1482. think it's

  1483. important to

  1484. recognize

  1485. Judges

    Judges 16 chapter mention

  1486. chapter 16

  1487. the story

  1488. of Samson

  1489. by the way

  1490. if you

  1491. think that

  1492. Samson

  1493. learned

  1494. from the

  1495. first

  1496. experience

  1497. he didn't

  1498. but you

  1499. remember

  1500. that he

  1501. fell in

  1502. love

  1503. with

  1504. Delilah

  1505. and

  1506. remember

  1507. she kept

  1508. on coming

  1509. to him

  1510. and said

  1511. hey

  1512. what's

  1513. the secret

  1514. to your

  1515. strength

  1516. oh if

  1517. you bind

  1518. me with

  1519. seven wet

  1520. bow strings

  1521. that'll do

  1522. it

  1523. you know

  1524. if you

  1525. tie my

  1526. hair into

  1527. the weaver's

  1528. beam

  1529. and she

  1530. says you

  1531. know it's

  1532. quite evident

  1533. that you

  1534. don't love

  1535. me because

  1536. you aren't

  1537. telling me

  1538. the truth

  1539. and he

  1540. says well

  1541. the deal

  1542. is if

  1543. you

  1544. cut my

  1545. hair I'm

  1546. done

  1547. and it

  1548. happened

  1549. you see

  1550. Delilah

  1551. leveraged

  1552. the issue

  1553. of relationship

  1554. if you

  1555. love me

  1556. you'll

  1557. tell me

  1558. and

  1559. John

  1560. the Baptist

  1561. is reminding

  1562. us that

  1563. because

  1564. God the

  1565. father

  1566. loves

  1567. Jesus

  1568. he gives

  1569. Jesus

  1570. all the

  1571. information

  1572. about who

  1573. he is

  1574. well that

  1575. brings us

  1576. to a final

  1577. truth

  1578. and I

  1579. want you

  1580. to go

  1581. back to

  1582. John

    John 3 chapter mention

  1583. chapter 3

  1584. so we

  1585. understand

  1586. the

  1587. significance

  1588. of this

  1589. you know

  1590. there are a lot

  1591. of people

  1592. today that

  1593. believe

  1594. just back

  1595. up just a

  1596. minute

  1597. a lot of

  1598. people believe

  1599. that Jesus

  1600. is a pretty

  1601. good guy

  1602. I mean

  1603. you know

  1604. okay

  1605. he kind

  1606. of went

  1607. around

  1608. doing good

  1609. things

  1610. you know

  1611. and in fact

  1612. you can even

  1613. rely upon him

  1614. to kind

  1615. of be

  1616. a pretty

  1617. sweet

  1618. person

  1619. now

  1620. being a

  1621. product

  1622. of the

  1623. 70s

  1624. I can't

  1625. help but

  1626. think about

  1627. the idea

  1628. of Jesus

  1629. as being

  1630. someone

  1631. who if

  1632. you're

  1633. going

  1634. to San

  1635. Francisco

  1636. you know

  1637. wear flowers

  1638. in your hair

  1639. some of you

  1640. are thinking

  1641. where is he

  1642. coming from

  1643. you know

  1644. it's like

  1645. here's the

  1646. deal

  1647. Jesus

  1648. was not

  1649. just about

  1650. being nice

  1651. and sweet

  1652. he was also

  1653. about

  1654. telling the

  1655. truth

  1656. do you

  1657. follow that

  1658. heaven

  1659. and hell

  1660. are

  1661. undeniably

  1662. real

  1663. truths

  1664. in fact

  1665. listen to me

  1666. carefully

  1667. Jesus

  1668. talked

  1669. more

  1670. about

  1671. hell

  1672. than

  1673. any

  1674. other

  1675. person

  1676. in

  1677. the

  1678. scriptures

  1679. and

  1680. here is

  1681. John the

  1682. Baptist

  1683. speaking

  1684. on behalf

  1685. of the

  1686. Savior

  1687. the Lord

  1688. Jesus

  1689. Christ

  1690. and here's

  1691. what he

  1692. said

  1693. whoever

  1694. believes

  1695. in the

  1696. son

  1697. has

  1698. eternal

  1699. life

  1700. whoever

  1701. does

  1702. not

  1703. obey

  1704. the

  1705. son

  1706. shall

  1707. not

  1708. see

  1709. life

  1710. but

  1711. the

  1712. wrath

  1713. of

  1714. God

  1715. remains

  1716. on

  1717. him

  1718. you can't

  1719. talk about

  1720. Jesus

  1721. truthfully

  1722. without

  1723. bringing

  1724. people to

  1725. a point

  1726. of saying

  1727. yes or

  1728. no to

  1729. God

  1730. and what

  1731. is it

  1732. that Jesus

  1733. really

  1734. tells us

  1735. he tells

  1736. us all

  1737. we need

  1738. to know

  1739. about

  1740. God

  1741. and so

  1742. let me

  1743. give you

  1744. just a

  1745. real simple

  1746. summary

  1747. to hold

  1748. on to

  1749. that I

  1750. want to

  1751. have

  1752. clearly

  1753. fixed

  1754. in your

  1755. mind

  1756. number

  1757. one

  1758. this is

  1759. the

  1760. undeniable

  1761. Bible

  1762. truth

  1763. that God

  1764. is holy

  1765. and cannot

  1766. overlook

  1767. sin

  1768. God

  1769. is holy

  1770. and cannot

  1771. overlook

  1772. sin

  1773. it doesn't

  1774. make any

  1775. difference

  1776. what flavor

  1777. you're involved

  1778. in

  1779. do you

  1780. understand

  1781. that

  1782. in fact

  1783. keep your

  1784. finger

  1785. here we

  1786. go

  1787. finger

  1788. exercises

  1789. today

  1790. go to

  1791. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 6 chapter mention

  1792. chapter 6

  1793. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 6 chapter mention

  1794. chapter 6

  1795. one of the

  1796. things I

  1797. love

  1798. love

  1799. love

  1800. love

  1801. say it

  1802. again

  1803. love

  1804. about the

  1805. gospel

  1806. is that

  1807. the gospel

  1808. tells us

  1809. we don't

  1810. have to

  1811. stay

  1812. the way

  1813. we are

  1814. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 6:9

  1815. chapter 6

  1816. verse 9

  1817. do you

  1818. not know

  1819. that the

  1820. unrighteous

  1821. will not

  1822. inherit

  1823. the kingdom

  1824. of God

  1825. don't be

  1826. deceived

  1827. don't mess

  1828. with God

  1829. neither the

  1830. sexually immoral

  1831. nor idolaters

  1832. nor adulterers

  1833. nor men who

  1834. practice homosexuality

  1835. nor thieves

  1836. nor the greedy

  1837. nor drunkards

  1838. nor revelers

  1839. nor swindlers

  1840. will inherit

  1841. the kingdom

  1842. of God

  1843. now we

  1844. come to the

  1845. next verse

  1846. that I

  1847. love

  1848. and such

  1849. were some

  1850. of you

  1851. in fact

  1852. let me add

  1853. to that

  1854. that's who

  1855. we all

  1856. were

  1857. isn't that

  1858. right

  1859. you know

  1860. we may

  1861. not have

  1862. committed

  1863. the nasty

  1864. nine

  1865. or the filthy

  1866. five

  1867. or the dirty

  1868. dozen

  1869. but the truth

  1870. of the matter

  1871. is all

  1872. have sinned

  1873. and come

  1874. short of the

  1875. glory of God

  1876. that's the truth

1877. and how can a man

  1878. who stands between

  1879. heaven and hell

  1880. not draw attention

  1881. to the fact

  1882. that heaven

  1883. and hell

  1884. rest in the

  1885. balance

  1886. and make it

  1887. clear that

  1888. Christ Jesus

  1889. came

  1890. first of all

  1891. because God

  1892. is holy

  1893. and cannot

  1894. abide sin

  1895. secondly

  1896. because we

  1897. are sinners

  1898. and cannot

  1899. remedy our

  1900. problem

  1901. on our

  1902. own

  1903. hey

  1904. can I

  1905. get to

  1906. heaven

  1907. by being

  1908. good

  1909. on my

  1910. own

  1911. efforts

  1912. and what's

  1913. the answer

  1914. not by

  1915. works of

  1916. righteousness

  1917. lest any

  1918. man should

  1919. boast

  1920. you know

  1921. when we

  1922. get

  1923. when we

  1924. cross the

  1925. finish line

  1926. none of us

  1927. are going

  1928. to be

  1929. saying

  1930. I finally

  1931. made it

  1932. you know

  1933. it was

  1934. it was

  1935. that extra

  1936. little bit

  1937. of work

  1938. I did

  1939. for United

  1940. Way

  1941. that's

  1942. the thing

  1943. that pulled

  1944. me

  1945. through

  1946. given

  1947. blood

  1948. whatever

  1949. stop

  1950. not by

  1951. works of

  1952. righteousness

  1953. lest any

  1954. one of us

  1955. should boast

  1956. and we

  1957. come to

  1958. the third

  1959. truth is

  1960. this is

  1961. God sent

  1962. his son

  1963. the Lord

  1964. Jesus

  1965. Christ

  1966. to die

  1967. for our

  1968. sins

  1969. he died

  1970. for me

  1971. he died

  1972. in my

  1973. place

  1974. one of

  1975. the Bible

  1976. truths I

  1977. love to

  1978. say at a

  1979. funeral

  1980. is that

  1981. Christ

  1982. died

  1983. your

  1984. death

  1985. will I

  1986. die

  1987. well if

  1988. Jesus

  1989. doesn't

  1990. come back

  1991. first that's

  1992. going to

  1993. happen

  1994. but I

  1995. won't die

  1996. like Jesus

  1997. died

  1998. I will

  1999. slip from

  2000. this place

  2001. through

  2002. the moment

  2003. of death

  2004. into the

  2005. presence of

  2006. the Father

  2007. with the

  2008. smile of

  2009. God

  2010. upon me

  2011. absent

  2012. in the

  2013. body

  2014. present

  2015. with the

  2016. Lord

  2017. and that

  2018. is because

  2019. Jesus

  2020. died

  2021. for me

  2022. so I

  2023. want you to

  2024. understand that

  2025. as the

  2026. scriptures make

  2027. it clear in

  2028. this passage

  2029. believing

  2030. in Jesus

  2031. brings

  2032. everlasting

  2033. life and

  2034. joyful

  2035. obedience

  2036. and by the

  2037. way

  2038. hey

  2039. everybody

  2040. listen

  2041. telling me

  2042. you're saved

  2043. and there's

  2044. nothing that

  2045. indicates that

  2046. you're walking

  2047. by faith in

  2048. obedience

  2049. obedience is

  2050. kind of

  2051. counter

  2052. intuitive

  2053. it's not

  2054. affirming and

  2055. encouraging

  2056. do you follow

  2057. me

  2058. I mean if I

  2059. say I love

  2060. my wife

  2061. and I do

  2062. then I would

  2063. move furniture

  2064. more willingly

  2065. how many of you

  2066. understand that

  2067. statement

  2068. now

  2069. it's a process

  2070. to get there

  2071. but the spirit of

  2072. God is working

  2073. hey here's the

  2074. deal

  2075. Jesus says this

  2076. he says

  2077. not everyone

  2078. that saith to

  2079. me

  2080. Lord

  2081. Lord

  2082. will enter

  2083. the kingdom

  2084. but he that

  2085. doeth the

  2086. will of my

  2087. father

  2088. and so

  2089. Jesus

  2090. and having a

  2091. relationship with

  2092. him means

  2093. coming to a

  2094. point of walking

  2095. in obedience

  2096. with him

  2097. secondly I want

  2098. you to know

  2099. this and close

  2100. with it

  2101. rejecting Jesus

  2102. brings the

  2103. eternal wrath

  2104. of God

  2105. rejecting Jesus

  2106. brings the

  2107. eternal wrath

  2108. of God

  2109. can I ask you

  2110. something

  2111. can you imagine

  2112. a church

  2113. that doesn't

  2114. make that

  2115. clear

  2116. huh

  2117. I want you

  2118. to imagine

  2119. just for a

  2120. moment

  2121. I am a

  2122. physician

  2123. who has

  2124. little pills

  2125. I don't have

  2126. them in my

  2127. pocket but

  2128. just little

  2129. pills

  2130. these are

  2131. pills that

  2132. that take

  2133. care of the

  2134. poison of

  2135. the soul

  2136. and you

  2137. come in

  2138. with a

  2139. variety of

  2140. symptoms

  2141. but at the

  2142. end of

  2143. the day

  2144. the symptoms

  2145. that you

  2146. are showing

  2147. are symptoms

  2148. that indicate

  2149. that you

  2150. have this

  2151. affliction

  2152. and you're

  2153. being poisoned

  2154. by that

  2155. disease or

  2156. sickness

  2157. and I have

  2158. the pills

  2159. in my

  2160. pocket

  2161. what kind

  2162. of conscientious

  2163. loving

  2164. sympathetic

  2165. physician would

  2166. not say to

  2167. you man

  2168. I am so

  2169. glad you

  2170. came here

  2171. and you know

  2172. it is a

  2173. messy problem

  2174. that you have

  2175. and you

  2176. could die

  2177. from this

  2178. disease

  2179. but I've

  2180. got good

  2181. news for

  2182. you

  2183. take this

  2184. do you

  2185. like that

  2186. we're all

  2187. great

  2188. physicians

  2189. we're all

  2190. helpers of

  2191. the great

  2192. physician

  2193. isn't that

  2194. right

  2195. that's what

  2196. we're in

  2197. the business

  2198. of doing

  2199. is letting

  2200. people know

  2201. that Christ

  2202. Jesus came

  2203. into the

  2204. world to

  2205. save sinners

  2206. and Paul

  2207. said this

  2208. of whom

  2209. I am

  2210. chief

  2211. I love

  2212. the privilege

  2213. of speaking

  2214. about the

  2215. power of

  2216. the cross

  2217. don't you

  2218. and you

  2219. can understand

  2220. why the

  2221. apostle as

  2222. he penned

  2223. this letter

  2224. and as he

  2225. brought the

  2226. ministry of

  2227. John the

  2228. Baptist to

  2229. a close

  2230. it ends up

  2231. as you

  2232. would expect

  2233. with the

  2234. sweetness of

  2235. the gospel

  2236. let's close

  2237. in prayer

  2238. holy father

  2239. this morning

  2240. as we

  2241. gather

  2242. together

  2243. we are

  2244. here because

  2245. of the

  2246. Lord Jesus

  2247. Christ

  2248. who found

  2249. us in

  2250. our hopeless

  2251. despair

  2252. and convicted

  2253. us of our

  2254. sin and brought

  2255. us to the

  2256. point of

  2257. realizing that

  2258. we have

  2259. no hope

  2260. in our

  2261. own efforts

  2262. in our

  2263. own

  2264. goodness

  2265. but Christ

  2266. Jesus came

  2267. into the

  2268. world to

  2269. save

  2270. sinners

  2271. and the

  2272. spirit of

  2273. God works

  2274. to bring

  2275. the person

  2276. who is

  2277. under

  2278. condemnation

  2279. first to

  2280. realize the

  2281. reality of

  2282. their judgment

  2283. and secondly

  2284. to realize

  2285. there is no

  2286. hope apart

  2287. from Christ

  2288. and so this

  2289. morning as we

  2290. hear the

  2291. word preached

  2292. our desire

  2293. is this

  2294. is that we

  2295. who know

  2296. Christ would

  2297. revel in the

  2298. sweetness of the

  2299. gospel and

  2300. those who are

  2301. here that don't

  2302. know Christ

  2303. would be drawn

  2304. to believe in

  2305. Jesus for the

  2306. salvation of

  2307. their soul

  2308. and that's our

  2309. prayer this

  2310. morning as we

  2311. close in

  2312. Jesus name

  2313. amen

  2314. as we
