  1. Is Connie in here?

  2. That's a pretty serious thing.

  3. !

  4. You know, it's like...

  5. Turn in your Bibles this morning to John chapter 4, verse 25.

    John 4:25

  6. Last week I was asked a question that I was reflecting on here just a couple minutes ago as I was praying.

  7. An individual asked me the question, so when are you finished preparing to preach?

  8. And my answer was when I walk away from the pulpit.

  9. The truth of the matter is, is that the process of preparing to preach is one that is, for a pastor, kind of a life-consuming responsibility and blessing.

  10. And the work of preaching is one that depends heavily upon time with the Lord, time in the Word, and your prayers.

  11. And so there is a sense in which I don't know how it's going to go until it's done.

  12. But having said that, I've got to tell you, this is an awful good passage.

  13. Oh, I mean that.

  14. Let me read it to you.

  15. Beginning in verse 24, Jesus said this.

  16. He said,

  17. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.

  18. The woman said to him,

  19. I know that Messiah is coming, he who is called Christ.

  20. When he comes, he will tell us all things.

  21. Jesus said to her,

  22. I, who speak to you, am he.

  23. Just then that his disciples came back,

  24. they marveled that he was talking with a woman,

  25. but no one said,

  26. What do you seek?

  27. Or why are you talking with her?

  28. So the woman left her water jar and went away into town and said to the people,

  29. Come, see the man who told me all that I ever did.

  30. Can this be the Christ?

  31. They went out of the town and were coming to him.

  32. Let's pray.

  33. Father God, this morning, our hearts, as we take this passage in mind and we read it,

  34. we are drawn to remember the passage in Zechariah where you,

  35. through the mouth of your prophet,

  36. declared that it's not by might nor by power but by your spirit.

  37. And so it is my prayer,

  38. and I know it is the prayer of your people who sit here this morning that know Christ

  39. and are informed by the scriptures,

  40. that your word would have free course this morning,

  41. that it would produce fruit that brings glory to the Lord Jesus Christ,

  42. that it would be used by you to continue the process of shaping and forming our frail lives

  43. to look more like the Lord Jesus.

  44. So as the result of our seeing the Lord Jesus in this passage,

  45. that we would be less consumed with ourself,

  46. less afflicted by the challenges and hardships of life,

  47. more earnest and affectionate for the things of eternity,

  48. more passionate for the souls of lost mankind,

  49. more humble,

  50. more joyful,

  51. more tender in our relationships with others,

  52. so that in all things,

  53. the Lord Jesus Christ,

  54. who is the one who has redeemed us from the pit

  55. and who is actively engaged in changing us

  56. from who we used to be to who we will be,

  57. in that process of progressive sanctification,

  58. would be the one who is glorified not only in saving us,

  59. but also in this wonderful, unbelievable work

  60. of changing us.

  61. So allow your word to do a wonderful work today,

  62. that this day, the Lord's day, March 22nd,

  63. will be one that,

  64. while maybe not written in the fly leaf of our Bible,

  65. will be one written on the pages of our heart

  66. as a day when your word

  67. and your spirit affected your child deeply,

  68. to the glory of Christ.

  69. Amen.

  70. I want you to think back just for a moment

  71. as we take this passage in mind,

  72. that when John the Baptist saw Jesus coming

  73. earlier in the book of John,

  74. he made that statement,

  75. behold the Lamb of God that takes away

  76. the sins of the world.

  77. Clear, undeniable announcement

  78. of who the Lord Jesus Christ was

  79. and what he had come to do.

  80. Behind that opening statement

  81. that John the Baptist made,

  82. then we find a series of incidents

  83. in which we find the Lamb of God

  84. interacting with people.

  85. The first one is Nicodemus.

  86. And you remember he was the ruler of the Jews

  87. who came to Jesus by night.

  88. And I would probably say that

  89. Nicodemus didn't get it at that time.

  90. That's pretty clear.

  91. And the spiritual truths,

  92. the matter that was in the Bible,

  93. even though he was a scholar

  94. and understood all of the Old Testament pretty well,

  95. he just didn't understand

  96. that the issues of spiritual life,

  97. in fact, more important than that,

  98. the issue of salvation and conversion

  99. was not just a matter of improving your behavior

  100. and kind of following all the rules and regalia

  101. that went with being a Jew.

  102. It was really the matter of the work of the Holy Spirit

  103. and bringing conviction

  104. and then the transformation of the heart.

  105. But we have Nicodemus on one side

  106. and then we have, guess what?

  107. We go from a Jew of all Jews,

  108. a classic illustration of the perfect Jewish man,

  109. and then we go to what?

  110. A Samaritan woman.

  111. I mean, and we're not talking

  112. about one of the prima donnas

  113. of Samaritan culture, are we?

  114. We're talking about an absolute low life,

  115. a person who was shunned by her culture

  116. and her community

  117. and who was afraid, in some sense,

  118. of being around the rest of the crowd

  119. because she knew she wasn't liked.

  120. And here we have Jesus

  121. meeting this woman at the well.

  122. And as we look at this passage

  123. and we break it down in verse 25 on through 30,

  124. since one of the responsibilities of preaching

  125. is to be clear,

  126. I'm going to give you the outline ahead of time.

  127. That doesn't mean you can go home and say,

  128. well, I know the three points.

  129. And I can't always say that in every case

  130. the outline is just this easy,

  131. but today, for whatever reason,

  132. it works fairly simply.

  133. So it comes down to three Cs.

  134. And you who know me know that

  135. I am not one of those guys

  136. who got a major in alliteration.

  137. It's just like, here it happened,

  138. it's a blind hug finds acorn time.

  139. Here we go.

  140. Confrontation, confusion, and conversion.

  141. Confrontation is the first thing.

  142. Confusion is the second thing.

  143. Conversion is the third thing.

  144. And so you kind of track your way

  145. through the passage

  146. and you see these things

  147. and actually it wasn't forced.

  148. It's there.

  149. Confrontation.

  150. Verse 25.

  151. The woman said to him,

  152. I know that Messiah is coming.

  153. He who is called Christ,

  154. when he comes,

  155. he will tell us all things.

  156. Jesus said to her,

  157. I who speak to you am he.

  158. The story of the Samaritan woman

  159. as it kind of rolls out in front of us

  160. in John chapter 4

    John 4 chapter mention

  161. is broken down in several steps

  162. as we worked our way through it.

  163. We saw, first of all,

  164. a tired Jesus sitting down by the well

  165. at Sychar

  166. and engaging a woman in conversation.

  167. That interchange led

  168. to spiritual things.

  169. And Jesus actually exposed

  170. her sinful heart

  171. with a fairly simple little statement

  172. of saying,

  173. go call your husband.

  174. We do know that what the woman did

  175. after she was convicted

  176. of her sinfulness

  177. is that she did what is usual

  178. and normal

  179. when people are convicted.

  180. The first thing that happens

  181. is they try to avoid the subject

  182. and move away from the conviction.

  183. And she tried to do that

  184. by bringing up

  185. a theological distinction

  186. between the Jews

  187. and the Samaritans

  188. and she hoped that

  189. that would kind of divert

  190. the attention away

  191. from her own heart

  192. and it didn't.

  193. Instead, what Jesus did

  194. was he really address

  195. the issue of what

  196. genuine worship is.

  197. And if you look there

  198. in John chapter 4,

    John 4 chapter mention

  199. just mark what Jesus said

  200. in verse 23,

  201. the hour is coming

  202. and now is here

  203. when the true worshipers

  204. will worship the Father

  205. in spirit and in truth,

  206. for the Father

  207. is seeking such people

  208. to worship him.

  209. Well, what Jesus was saying

  210. in that passage

  211. and we don't want

  212. to move away from it,

  213. it has to be part

  214. of our understanding

  215. of the frame

  216. in which Jesus

  217. was ministering

  218. to this Samaritan woman

  219. and the frame

  220. in which actually

  221. all of us engage

  222. in ministry

  223. to other people.

  224. He was saying this,

  225. true worship

  226. is really all

  227. of who you are

  228. invested in the glory

  229. of who he is.

  230. And can I tell you

  231. something at the end

  232. of the day,

  233. think with me,

  234. we are either engaged

  235. in worshiping him

  236. or we're engaged

  237. in worshiping ourself.

  238. We're all worshipers

  239. all the time.

  240. Do you understand that?

  241. And how do you know

  242. when you're worshiping yourself?

  243. Everybody smile.

  244. Everybody look at me.

  245. Hey, up here.

  246. Come on.

  247. Up.

  248. Look here.

  249. When we're worshiping

  250. ourself,

  251. we're kind of given

  252. to being moody

  253. when things aren't

  254. going our way.

  255. I mean, hey,

  256. you know how in the,

  257. you know,

  258. Dagon was really upset

  259. when people weren't

  260. doing the things he wanted

  261. and Dagon would do what?

  262. I mean,

  263. everybody knew

  264. when Dagon wasn't

  265. be worshiped.

  266. How did we know

  267. that Dagon wasn't happy?

  268. What did he do?

  269. I mean,

  270. there was thunder

  271. and clouds

  272. and all kinds of,

  273. if you're worshiping him,

  274. you're not so caught up

  275. by how other people

  276. are treating you

  277. and all of God's people

  278. who are not

  279. the least convicted

  280. by this thought

  281. said, amen.

  282. Right?

  283. When we're engaged

  284. in self-worship

  285. and things aren't

  286. going the way

  287. self-thinks

  288. they ought to be,

  289. guess how we act?

  290. Moody,

  291. a little pouty,

  292. a little unhappy,

  293. very easily offended.

  294. There's a little phrase

  295. that we've used

  296. over here in Maranatha

  297. called high OI.

  298. Does anybody know

  299. what high OI is?

  300. It's called

  301. a high offendability index.

  302. And people who have

  303. a high OI

  304. are people that are

  305. specialists in self-worship.

  306. Coming back around

  307. to the circle

  308. so we understand

  309. where we are,

  310. we find here is Jesus

  311. helping this woman

  312. understand that true worship

  313. is really all about God

  314. and means putting

  315. all that you are

  316. into it.

  317. And as she

  318. addresses this problem

  319. or as Jesus

  320. addresses this problem,

  321. we find that the woman

  322. tried to step away from it

  323. and when Jesus

  324. made that statement

  325. about listen,

  326. true worship is really

  327. all of who you are

  328. being caught up

  329. with who God is,

  330. she tries one more time

  331. to dodge the subject.

  332. How do I know that?

  333. The woman said to him,

  334. verse 25,

  335. I know that Messiah

  336. is coming,

  337. he who is called Christ,

  338. when he comes

  339. he will tell us

  340. all things.

  341. It's like,

  342. hey, I heard you

  343. but I'm not real sure

  344. I have to buy into

  345. what you say

  346. but I'm going to wait

  347. until the authority comes,

  348. that's the Messiah.

  349. Don't press me right now

  350. with spiritual truth,

  351. I'm waiting to hear it from

  352. and what does Jesus say?

  353. I'm glad you brought that up.

  354. I'm him!

  355. I like that.

  356. You got it,

  357. I'm the one!

  358. You know,

  359. here is

  360. the woman

  361. saying,

  362. I'm feeling uncomfortable

  363. with this

  364. business of sin first,

  365. you know,

  366. the husband deal,

  367. and I'm feeling uncomfortable

  368. with this worship thing

  369. but we're going to try

  370. to wait,

  371. we'll kind of delay

  372. until the real Messiah

  373. shows up.

  374. And what does Jesus say?

  375. let me tell you something,

  376. you're thinking about

  377. distracting me first

  378. with an argument

  379. about location

  380. and then you're kind of

  381. dodging the subject

  382. and here's the reality

  383. is true worship,

  384. true worship

  385. is all about

  386. who God really is

  387. and what he wants

  388. from our heart

  389. and that's what

  390. Jesus was drawing

  391. this woman to understand

  392. in this moment

  393. is,

  394. hey listen,

  395. it's about

  396. who I am

  397. and who you are

  398. that is on the

  399. cusp of the moment.

  400. Now as you look

  401. at this passage

  402. and you recognize

  403. what Jesus says

  404. in verse 26,

  405. I want you to understand

  406. that it is one

  407. of only two places

  408. in the New Testament

  409. where Jesus

  410. explicitly

  411. declares

  412. who he is.

  413. That's pretty interesting

  414. because you'll remember

  415. over and over again

  416. the Jews were,

  417. they kept on coming

  418. to Jesus

  419. and saying,

  420. you know,

  421. tell us,

  422. are you really

  423. the Messiah?

  424. Their understanding

  425. of the Messiah,

  426. by the way,

  427. was not the Savior

  428. of mankind's sins

  429. but they were looking

  430. for someone

  431. to kind of rescue them

  432. from their political problems.

  433. Hey,

  434. everybody out there,

  435. it's kind of like

  436. in the Jewish culture

  437. all of their Facebook posts

  438. were about politics

  439. not about spirit issues.

  440. How many of you

  441. understood what I just said?

  442. That's it.

  443. Everybody understand

  444. that one?

  445. It's like they were

  446. all caught up

  447. in concern

  448. for the political condition.

  449. I mean,

  450. and let me tell you something,

  451. Rome was absolute trash

  452. and by that extension

  453. the Jews were living

  454. in a pretty repressive environment

  455. and so if Facebook

  456. had been around

  457. in the ancient world,

  458. I bet you that 99.8%,

  459. 2%, 0.10%,

  460. forget it.

  461. How many of you know

  462. that I don't do well at math?

  463. Is that a secret?

  464. Okay.

  465. There was a very,

  466. very, very, very,

  467. very, very, very,

  468. very small part

  469. of the Jewish population

  470. that would have been

  471. concerned about anything

  472. but politics

  473. and Jesus,

  474. when he would

  475. do these miracles,

  476. they'd say,

  477. well,

  478. are you the Messiah?

  479. And what they were

  480. really saying is,

  481. are you the one

  482. that's going to

  483. clean up Washington?

  484. Washington.

  485. And Jesus would come back

  486. and say,

  487. well, hey, listen,

  488. I'm not about

  489. cleaning up Washington,

  490. I'm about taking care

  491. of your heart.

  492. That's what he did

  493. with this woman, okay?

  494. And that's not in my notes

  495. in case you want to

  496. email me about that one later.

  497. Here's Jesus,

  498. he says,

  499. I'm the one,

  500. I'm the one,

  501. I'm the one.

  502. And it's pretty interesting

  503. because here is this woman,

  504. she's been convicted

  505. by her immorality,

  506. she's been convicted

  507. by the fact

  508. that her worship

  509. is just kind of ritual

  510. and being in the right place,

  511. you know,

  512. doing the right kind of thing

  513. and whatever,

  514. and Jesus says,

  515. hey, listen,

  516. real worship's about the heart.

  517. And then she tries

  518. to dodge that one

  519. and Jesus says,

  520. hey,

  521. you want to hear

  522. what the Messiah thinks?

  523. I'm here.

  524. I'm here.

  525. And so I want you

  526. to understand

  527. as you look at this passage

  528. that you can't step away

  529. from the illustration

  530. we have of the grace of God

  531. in getting a hold

  532. of the hardness

  533. and the darkness

  534. of man's heart.

  535. I like that.

  536. And that's one of the reasons

  537. why in the process

  538. of witnessing

  539. and sharing the gospel

  540. with other people,

  541. when I was younger,

  542. I used to become

  543. pretty animated

  544. in winning arguments

  545. for Jesus.

  546. How many of you

  547. have been there?

  548. Winning arguments

  549. for Jesus.

  550. I took class one

  551. and class two,

  552. did pretty well in it,

  553. and I could persuade

  554. anybody

  555. to drink fire water

  556. on a moment's notice.

  557. Hey,

  558. you know,

  559. I'm in your space

  560. and you better believe

  561. in Jesus or else.

  562. I've learned

  563. that that doesn't work.

  564. You know,

  565. how many of you know

  566. what a reversionary clause

  567. is when you sign a contract?

  568. How many of you know that?

  569. I mean,

  570. I had people pray the prayer

  571. in front of me

  572. and the minute I left,

  573. guess what happened?

  574. Whew.

  575. He's gone.

  576. Jesus wasn't that way.

  577. He just allowed

  578. the work of grace

  579. to do its part

  580. in affecting the heart

  581. of people,

  582. and here's this woman.

  583. She says,

  584. yeah, well,

  585. I want to dodge this one too,

  586. and he says,

  587. you can't dodge me.

  588. I'm right here.

  589. And so we understand

  590. that grace is what convicts us

  591. of our sins

  592. and opens blinds eyes

  593. so people can see Jesus.

  594. He's got to do that work.

  595. We can't force it,

  596. but there is convicting power

  597. when the Spirit of God

  598. is at work in people's lives,

  599. and you'll see it.

  600. Let's come to a second part.

  601. I want you to read this here,

  602. and I don't want you

  603. to think about low lives.

  604. They didn't get it.

  605. If I was a disciple,

  606. I would have been

  607. all over this spiritual moment.

  608. Follow me?

  609. I want you to look now

  610. in verse 27.

  611. Then, just then,

  612. his disciples came back.

  613. Where had they been?

  614. They went into town

  615. to get a McDonald's, you know?

  616. I mean, they were hungry,

  617. and so they went

  618. to get a little snack

  619. from Samaritans, you know?

  620. And snacking from Samaritans

  621. was okay,

  622. just don't be at the well.

  623. And so here they are.

  624. They come back,

  625. and they marveled,

  626. and that word marveled

  627. is pretty interesting.

  628. We'll get to that

  629. in just a minute.

  630. They marveled

  631. that he was talking

  632. with a woman,

  633. and no one said to him,

  634. what do you seek?

  635. Or, why are you talking

  636. with her?

  637. So, confusion.

  638. We have confused disciples.

  639. Now, look at me.

  640. Look at me.

  641. These disciples were confused

  642. because they didn't understand

  643. what Jesus' work was.

  644. Why did Jesus come?

  645. Come on.

  646. If you know the answer,

  647. look up.

  648. For the Son of Man

  649. came to seek and to save

  650. Samaritan women.

  651. Am I right?

  652. And here are the disciples.

  653. They come scampering back

  654. from having gotten their hamburgers

  655. and whatever else,

  656. and they come,

  657. and here is Jesus

  658. talking to a woman

  659. at the well

  660. in Samaria.

  661. And so,

  662. by the way,

  663. none of us here

  664. are the disciples.

  665. Am I right?

  666. We're a lot more mature

  667. and a lot more spiritually advanced

  668. than the disciples,

  669. and we understand

  670. that this business

  671. of drawing breath,

  672. this side of glory,

  673. is really all about one thing,

  674. and it's about seeing people

  675. come to Jesus, right?

  676. That's why you invite

  677. your neighbors over,

  678. and that's why you minister

  679. to the people around you,

  680. and that's why

  681. when you go to work

  682. on Monday,

  683. the ambition of your heart

  684. is not to earn a living,

  685. but to see people

  686. come to Jesus, right?

  687. Low life disciples.

  688. They come booking in,

  689. and they see Jesus

  690. talking to this woman.

  691. Now look at that word.

  692. Put your finger on it.

  693. There's something about translation.

  694. They marveled.

  695. Okay?

  696. The word that is used here

  697. talks about like,

  698. what is this?

  699. It's the same word

  700. used in Acts chapter 7

    Acts 7 chapter mention

  701. where Stephen is preaching

  702. about how Moses

  703. was blown away

  704. when the bush was on fire

  705. and it wasn't burning, right?

  706. Marveling,

  707. in a biblical sense right here,

  708. is not kind of this,

  709. huh.

  710. It's like,

  711. whoa!

  712. What is this?

  713. What is this?

  714. And the thing that was just

  715. beyond their little

  716. pea-brained grasp

  717. was that their teacher,

  718. the one that they had left

  719. their profitable careers

  720. to follow fishermen,

  721. you know,

  722. I mean,

  723. whatever they were doing,

  724. they had sold it all out

  725. to follow Jesus

  726. and the one they were following

  727. was at a well

  728. talking to a woman.

  729. Oh.

  730. By the way,

  731. Jewish culture

  732. drew a strong line

  733. between the sexes.

  734. An open conversation

  735. between a man and a woman

  736. that was not a man's wife,

  737. child, or blood

  738. was absolutely unacceptable.

  739. Crass and wicked men

  740. and women did flirt.

  741. Happened all the time.

  742. But men and women

  743. that were each,

  744. that were at least sensitive

  745. to the civil decorum

  746. of the day

  747. and to the relationships

  748. that were marked

  749. by Old Testament purity,

  750. and Scripture as well,

  751. were pretty careful.

  752. And so,

  753. truth of the matter is

  754. is that rabbis

  755. just didn't talk to women,

  756. period.

  757. By the way,

  758. just as a sidebar,

  759. ladies,

  760. I like all of you.

  761. Do you understand that?

  762. But I know some

  763. on occasion

  764. have thought

  765. that I've been

  766. just a little standoffish.

  767. I'm not a rabbi,

  768. but I am pretty careful.

  769. Okay?

  770. Enough said?

  771. Here was Jesus

  772. talking to a woman.

  773. I mean,

  774. a woman.

  775. A woman who was

  776. a Samaritan.

  777. I mean,

  778. it was like

  779. over the top.

  780. How do we know

  781. it was over the top?

  782. Well,

  783. can we read verse 27

  784. with a little bit

  785. of realism in it?

  786. I'm going to do that for you.

  787. Everybody listen.

  788. Don't be offended.

  789. At the end of the day,

  790. if you have a question

  791. about what a pastor says,

  792. at the end of the day,

  793. what you really ought to do

  794. is not check

  795. what your sensibilities are,

  796. but how it fits the Bible.

  797. Everybody agrees,

  798. right?

  799. Okay,

  800. so we're going to do this

  801. and you can go back home

  802. and kind of,

  803. you can Google it.

  804. That means you don't have

  805. to be a specialist

  806. in Hebrew

  807. or Greek

  808. to get it.

  809. Okay?

  810. Here we go.

  811. Verse 27.

  812. No one said,

  813. what do you seek

  814. or what are you,

  815. why are you talking with her?

  816. Can you kind of parse

  817. that a little bit

  818. for yourself?

  819. Let me do it for you.

  820. Why are you flirting with her?

  821. Is that a fair rendition?

  822. Nod your head

  823. if you think

  824. there's probably

  825. a good chance

  826. that that's a little bit

  827. of what they were thinking.

  828. They didn't say it.

  829. Do you follow that?

  830. Men didn't talk with women.

  831. Case closed.

  832. The only time

  833. that men talked to women

  834. were,

  835. if they were courteous,

  836. blood relative,

  837. not blood relative,

  838. off page

  839. where they shouldn't be.

  840. And here is Jesus

  841. doing something

  842. that stepped beyond

  843. the bounds

  844. of what these people

  845. understood.

  846. And they were kind

  847. of taken back by it.

  848. They did,

  849. what's going on?

  850. Well,

  851. here's the heart

  852. of the issue

  853. for the disciples.

  854. And the truth of the matter

  855. is that the disciples

  856. had a small view

  857. of Christ's mission.

  858. I want you to mark

  859. that out.

  860. They had a small view

  861. of Christ's mission.

  862. And see,

  863. they had drawn

  864. a tight circle

  865. around what they

  866. thought ministry was.

  867. And that tight circle

  868. did not include

  869. Samaritans,

  870. and it didn't include

  871. women.

  872. End of discussion.

  873. And so here

  874. they come,

  875. they find their

  876. rabbi,

  877. their teacher,

  878. the one who

  879. they're following,

  880. engaged in a conversation

  881. with a woman,

  882. and it just literally

  883. blew their socks off.

  884. Now,

  885. forget flirting,

  886. but stop and recognize

  887. something.

  888. It's a fair question

  889. we can ask ourselves.

  890. Have we drawn

  891. unchrist-like circles

  892. that exclude some people

  893. that Jesus came to save?

  894. I want you to think

  895. about that.

  896. Hey,

  897. what about the kids

  898. that don't respect

  899. your lawn?

  900. Or mess up

  901. in your parking lot?

  902. Or the neighbors

  903. that are just

  904. too loud?

  905. I moved into

  906. a neighborhood

  907. that has people

  908. closer.

  909. And some of the songs

  910. that I

  911. would care to forget,

  912. they happen to love.

  913. And so I've got

  914. to decide,

  915. am I going next door

  916. and knock on their door

  917. and say,

  918. listen,

  919. I paid taxes here

  920. and I don't have to

  921. listen to that junk.

  922. People drive down

  923. the street,

  924. you know,

  925. and I don't understand it.

  926. I understand why

  927. people are deaf

  928. today.

  929. But I mean,

  930. when your windows

  931. are rattling,

  932. I was at the

  933. stoplight

  934. and I could hear

  935. every word

  936. that was being said

  937. in the car

  938. next to me.

  939. And I looked over

  940. and I thought,

  941. maybe he's got

  942. his windows down.

  943. He had his windows

  944. up and they were

  945. literally shaking

  946. with the,

  947. how many of you

  948. know what I'm

  949. talking about,

  950. right?

  951. Okay,

  952. here's the deal.

  953. We're not talking

  954. about that.

  955. We're talking

  956. about the attitude

  957. we have towards

  958. people that aren't

  959. in our circle.

  960. Don't be small-minded

  961. with your prejudices.

  962. I want to encourage

  963. you to look for

  964. gospel opportunities

  965. in those moments

  966. at the well.

  967. When you're driving,

  968. you're in the mall,

  969. you're across the fence,

  970. and you're talking

  971. with people who

  972. have no hope

  973. and you're the one

  974. representative that

  975. Jesus put in their

  976. space to make a

  977. difference for all

  978. of eternity

  979. and you want to

  980. have an attitude

  981. over their music.

  982. I got to tell you,

  983. he came looking

  984. for sinners

  985. and he found me

  986. at the well.

  987. And if I understand

  988. what he did for me,

  989. it means I don't

  990. get all bent out

  991. of shape over

  992. little issues

  993. that in the scope

  994. of things don't

  995. count for a hill

  996. of beans.

  997. Oh, let's stop

  998. for a minute

  999. so we understand

  1000. something, by the way.

  1001. You're not going

  1002. to do very well

  1003. at the momentary

  1004. moments at the well

  1005. if you can't do

  1006. reasonably well

  1007. with people that

  1008. you get to practice

  1009. with over and over

  1010. again.

  1011. How many of you

  1012. understood what I

  1013. just said?

1014. Let me say it again

  1015. slowly because I know

  1016. it's a tough one.

  1017. You're not going

  1018. to do well,

  1019. you're not going

  1020. to do properly.

  1021. Forget the well part.

  1022. You're not going

  1023. to do properly,

  1024. you're not going

  1025. to be effective

  1026. at those little

  1027. moments when you

  1028. get to bump into

  1029. low-life sinners

  1030. that desperately

  1031. need Jesus

  1032. in those rare

  1033. incidents at the

  1034. well if you can't

  1035. do well practicing

  1036. with people you

  1037. see every day

  1038. at home or here

  1039. in the body of

  1040. Christ.

  1041. Everybody smile.

  1042. This is one of

  1043. those smile moments.

  1044. if you're sitting

  1045. there and you

  1046. tell me you care

  1047. about lost mankind

  1048. but you're torqued

  1049. out about somebody

  1050. else in the bride

  1051. of Christ,

  1052. there's something

  1053. wrong and it's

  1054. not with Jesus.

  1055. It's your heart.

  1056. And having smack

  1057. talk about the fact

  1058. that well we're not

  1059. doing real well

  1060. at evangelism and

  1061. you're over there

  1062. just complaining

  1063. about someone else

  1064. in the family

  1065. and say get over

  1066. it.

  1067. Practice here.

  1068. Go out there

  1069. and light it up.

  1070. All God's people

  1071. said,

  1072. Oh wow,

  1073. I need a Kleenex.

  1074. Convict me Lord

  1075. of being petty

  1076. at the cost

  1077. of the gospel.

  1078. Can you write that

  1079. on your paper?

  1080. I'll say it again

  1081. slowly.

  1082. Convict me Lord

  1083. of being petty

  1084. at the cost

  1085. of the gospel.

  1086. Now do you

  1087. understand why

  1088. when you preach

  1089. you don't know

  1090. what's going to

  1091. happen until it

  1092. happens?

  1093. Well,

  1094. let's come to

  1095. the best part.

  1096. Conversion.

  1097. The Samaritan

  1098. woman had come

  1099. to this well

  1100. at the off hour.

  1101. woman had come

  1102. to this well

  1103. at the off hour.

  1104. Because she

  1105. wanted to

  1106. avoid

  1107. the people

  1108. who disliked

  1109. her.

  1110. And she

  1111. came with

  1112. one agenda

  1113. and Jesus

  1114. found her.

  1115. And we know

  1116. that as a result

  1117. of Jesus

  1118. finding her

  1119. everything

  1120. changed.

  1121. Verse 28.

  1122. So the woman

  1123. left her

  1124. water jar

  1125. and went

  1126. away into

  1127. town

  1128. and said

  1129. to the

  1130. people,

  1131. come,

  1132. see a man

  1133. who told

  1134. me all

  1135. that I

  1136. ever did.

  1137. Can this

  1138. be the

  1139. Christ?

  1140. Let me say

  1141. this and mark

  1142. it.

  1143. And I want

  1144. you to hear

  1145. this clearly

  1146. because one

  1147. of the things

  1148. that is a

  1149. problem in

  1150. our culture.

  1151. How many

  1152. of you

  1153. understand

  1154. that coming

  1155. to Christ

  1156. is simple?

  1157. But just

  1158. because you

  1159. say a prayer

  1160. doesn't mean

  1161. you have

  1162. the deal.

  1163. If there

  1164. is no

  1165. evidence of

  1166. a genuine

  1167. change in

  1168. your life

  1169. and your

  1170. affections,

  1171. don't fool

  1172. yourself to

  1173. think that

  1174. saying 17

  1175. or 31

  1176. words made

  1177. any difference

  1178. at all.

  1179. Well,

  1180. anyway,

  1181. salvation

  1182. changes our

  1183. values and

  1184. our life

  1185. agenda.

  1186. I love

  1187. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 5:17

  1188. chapter 5

  1189. verse 17.

  1190. Let me say

  1191. it to you

  1192. here.

  1193. It says,

  1194. if any

  1195. man be

  1196. in Christ

  1197. Jesus,

  1198. he is a

  1199. new

  1200. creation.

  1201. And that

  1202. word that

  1203. is used

  1204. there,

  1205. creation,

  1206. is a

  1207. word that

  1208. conversion

  1209. is used

  1210. exclusively

  1211. for God's

  1212. activity in

  1213. doing something

  1214. supernatural.

  1215. Conversion

  1216. is not a

  1217. decision to

  1218. kind of improve

  1219. yourself by

  1220. following a

  1221. new set of

  1222. rules.

  1223. It is the

  1224. power of God

  1225. that gets a

  1226. hold of a

  1227. nasty,

  1228. broken,

  1229. ruined

  1230. sinner whose

  1231. life is an

  1232. absolute mess

  1233. and comes with

  1234. broken humility

  1235. and says,

  1236. I am desperate

  1237. in my

  1238. condition.

  1239. I need you

  1240. to do

  1241. something in

  1242. me and

  1243. salvation takes

  1244. us from

  1245. death to

  1246. life and

  1247. we're

  1248. different.

  1249. We're

  1250. different.

  1251. I think it's

  1252. frustrating

  1253. sometimes to

  1254. listen to people

  1255. talk about their

  1256. faith in Christ

  1257. and their

  1258. conversion,

  1259. but Matt,

  1260. there's no

  1261. evidence.

  1262. There's no

  1263. evidence.

  1264. Turn in your

  1265. Bibles to

  1266. Romans chapter,

  1267. you're in

  1268. John, go to

  1269. the right,

  1270. John chapter

    John 6 chapter mention

  1271. 6, John

    John 6 chapter mention

  1272. chapter 6,

  1273. Romans.

  1274. I want

  1275. Romans, not

  1276. John.

  1277. It's a habit

  1278. right now, we're

  1279. in the John

  1280. part.

  1281. But we're

  1282. going to

  1283. Romans chapter

    Romans 6:1–5

  1284. 6, verse 1

  1285. through 5.

  1286. Salvation is

  1287. change.

  1288. Salvation is

  1289. change.

  1290. Let me read

  1291. Romans chapter

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  1292. 6.

  1293. What shall we

  1294. say then?

  1295. Are we to

  1296. continue in

  1297. sin that

  1298. grace may

  1299. abound?

  1300. In other

  1301. words, hey,

  1302. since we've

  1303. been saved,

  1304. can we just

  1305. kind of, you

  1306. know, bebop

  1307. our way

  1308. through, acting

  1309. just like we

  1310. did before, but

  1311. you know, at

  1312. least we said

  1313. the prayer and

  1314. we got, you

  1315. know, kind of

  1316. some of the

  1317. vocabulary, we're

  1318. learning songs and

  1319. all that kind of

  1320. stuff.

  1321. He says, by no

  1322. means.

  1323. How can we who

  1324. died to sin still

  1325. live in it?

  1326. Do you not know

1327. that all of us who

  1328. have been baptized

  1329. into Christ, Jesus,

  1330. were baptized into

  1331. his death?

  1332. In other words, in

  1333. his death, our

  1334. death took place.

  1335. We were buried

  1336. therefore with him

  1337. in baptism in order

  1338. that just as Christ

  1339. was raised from the

1340. dead by the glory of

  1341. the Father, so we

  1342. too might walk in

  1343. newness of life.

  1344. Underline that.

  1345. Circle that in your

  1346. Bible.

  1347. Newness of life.

  1348. So that we might

  1349. walk in newness of

  1350. life.

  1351. If you cannot

  1352. recognize something

  1353. significantly different

  1354. from where you used

1355. to be to where you

  1356. are now as the

  1357. result of your faith

  1358. in the Lord Jesus

  1359. Christ, there's

  1360. something wrong.

  1361. Salvation changes

  1362. our view of self.

  1363. I want you to

  1364. mark that down.

  1365. I want you to

  1366. underline that.

  1367. I want you to

  1368. bold that.

  1369. Go back to John

    John 4 chapter mention

  1370. chapter 4.

  1371. the woman left

  1372. her water jar and

  1373. went away into town

  1374. and said to the

  1375. people, I'll never

  1376. forget.

  1377. There's an excellent

  1378. book by Stuart Scott

  1379. called From Pride to

  1380. Humility.

  1381. And I remember

  1382. several years ago

  1383. when I gave a copy

1384. of it to the deacons.

  1385. Asked them to just

1386. read a little part of

  1387. it.

  1388. We were working

  1389. on something

  1390. together and I

  1391. said, so let me

  1392. have you fill in

  1393. this little statement.

  1394. If people really

  1395. knew me, they

  1396. wouldn't, guess

  1397. what all the deacons

  1398. thought would be the

  1399. next word?

  1400. Like me.

  1401. If people really

  1402. knew you.

  1403. If people really

  1404. knew you.

  1405. Because of the

  1406. nastiness of our

  1407. hearts.

  1408. Do you understand

  1409. what I'm saying?

  1410. Here's a woman

  1411. who went into

  1412. town and what

  1413. did she say?

  1414. You follow me?

  1415. This is a woman

  1416. who was a serial

  1417. adulterer.

  1418. You follow me?

  1419. Did she have a

  1420. good reputation?

  1421. Everybody really

  1422. liked this girl.

  1423. They loved to

  1424. invite her over for

  1425. family fun because

  1426. while they were in

  1427. the kitchen, they

  1428. were worried what

  1429. this girl was doing

  1430. with their husband.

  1431. Got that?

  1432. This woman runs

  1433. back into town and

  1434. she says, you

  1435. got to meet him.

  1436. He knows all

  1437. about me.

  1438. There's a little

  1439. part in the story

  1440. that's missing.

  1441. You know what it

  1442. is?

  1443. He still loves me.

  1444. He's ready to

  1445. forgive me for all

  1446. of that.

  1447. He's ready to give

  1448. me complete

  1449. forgiveness for all

  1450. of my sin.

  1451. He accepts me

  1452. unconditionally.

  1453. I love what it

  1454. says in Ephesians

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  1455. chapter 1 where it

  1456. says, we are

  1457. accepted in the

  1458. beloved.

  1459. I love being able

  1460. to say to people

  1461. as I share the

  1462. gospel with them,

  1463. Romans chapter 10

    Romans 10:11

  1464. verse 11 says,

  1465. whosoever believes

  1466. in him, can anybody

1467. finish the rest of it?

  1468. You ought to know

  1469. this, shall not be

  1470. ashamed.

  1471. Salvation changes

  1472. our view of self.

  1473. By the way, mark

  1474. this.

  1475. Just because salvation

  1476. changes our view of

  1477. self doesn't mean that

  1478. the enemy of our

  1479. souls does not want

  1480. to keep on torquing

1481. us back to the way

  1482. we used to be.

  1483. Satan is always

  1484. there saying, do

  1485. you remember the

  1486. value system you

  1487. used to work under?

  1488. Do you remember how

  1489. bad you felt about

  1490. yourself?

  1491. I want to bring

  1492. you back to that

  1493. place.

  1494. How many of you

  1495. understand what I

  1496. just said?

  1497. That's what Satan's

  1498. all about.

  1499. Here's a woman who

  1500. ran into town and

1501. said, let me tell you

  1502. something, I want you

1503. to meet the man who

1504. is the hero in my

  1505. story.

  1506. It's not me, it's

  1507. him, it's Jesus.

  1508. Jesus knew her

  1509. secrets and her sin

  1510. and yet he was

  1511. ready to give her

  1512. complete forgiveness

  1513. for everything and

  1514. that was all that

  1515. counted.

  1516. that's the way it

  1517. is.

  1518. What Jesus thought

  1519. about her life

  1520. trumped every other

  1521. thing.

  1522. Can I say that

  1523. slowly?

  1524. Because I know

  1525. that Satan plays

  1526. this card.

  1527. What Jesus thought

  1528. about her life

  1529. trumped every other

  1530. thing.

  1531. I like that.

  1532. to have the burden

  1533. and the shame of

  1534. your life lifted by

  1535. the forgiveness of

  1536. Christ is

  1537. overwhelming.

  1538. healing.

1539. I recited the passages in

  1540. Romans chapter 10

    Romans 10:11

  1541. verse 11 and Ephesians

    Ephesians 1:6

  1542. chapter 1 verse 6 and

1543. I want you to mark

  1544. them for your later

  1545. education.

1546. But one other thing I

1547. want you to see here is

  1548. the woman's view of

  1549. Jesus changed.

  1550. Back she went into

1551. town and she makes an

  1552. interesting statement

1553. that may be a little

  1554. confusing on the surface

1555. but we need to think

  1556. with us.

  1557. Think it through.

  1558. She goes into town.

1559. She says can this be the

  1560. Christ?

1561. Was she asking a kind of

  1562. a democratic answer?

  1563. Let's take a poll.

  1564. What do you think?

1565. Is that what's going on?

  1566. No.

1567. How do we know that?

1568. Well if you look at

  1569. verse 39 many Samaritans

  1570. from the town believed

1571. in him because of the

  1572. woman's testimony.

  1573. She didn't go around

  1574. saying I have a question

  1575. for you.

1576. Do you think this is

  1577. Jesus?

  1578. Do you think it's a

  1579. Christ?

  1580. No.

  1581. She was going around

1582. saying I want you to

1583. meet the one who is the

1584. Messiah who has given me

  1585. complete forgiveness for

1586. all of my sins and

  1587. everybody's looking at

1588. her saying all of your

  1589. sins?

1590. Do you know that we know

1591. what kind of sinner you

  1592. are?

  1593. All of your sins?

  1594. Verse 42.

1595. They said to the woman

1596. it's no longer because of

1597. what you have said that

  1598. we believe.

  1599. She couldn't have been

1600. just saying is this the

  1601. Christ?

1602. Now why did she ask it

1603. this way in the passage

  1604. we're looking at there

  1605. in verse 29.

  1606. You remember this woman

1607. had a testimony in town

1608. of being fast and loose

  1609. with sex.

  1610. Agreed?

1611. Would she have been the

  1612. perfect person to be

  1613. bear testimony to the

1614. deity of Christ and to

  1615. the holiness and glory

1616. of the Savior of lost

  1617. mankind?

  1618. Answer is no.

1619. And so she exercised a

  1620. little decency and

  1621. caution in speaking

  1622. gently.

  1623. And by the way,

  1624. questions are a pretty

  1625. good way of bringing

  1626. conviction.

  1627. Do you know that?

  1628. It works.

1629. Is your life a mess?

1630. You mean what I'm living

  1631. isn't the way it's

  1632. supposed to be?

  1633. Questions work.

  1634. So here's the woman

  1635. comes into town.

1636. She says, hey, is this

  1637. the Christ?

1638. So I want you to

  1639. understand this morning

  1640. that you sit here

  1641. maybe like Nicodemus.

  1642. Remember Nicodemus?

  1643. Curious but not convicted.

  1644. He knew something was

  1645. missing in his life.

1646. There was a void and an

  1647. emptiness but he really

1648. was too caught up in

  1649. himself to come to

  1650. grips with the desperate

  1651. condition of his soul.

1652. And can I tell you?

1653. Until Jesus brings you to

  1654. the place of brokenness

  1655. where you see the

  1656. bankruptcy of your soul,

1657. there will be no remedy.

  1658. There will be no

  1659. conversion.

  1660. bad news,

  1661. you've got stage

  1662. four cancer and

  1663. you're dying.

  1664. Good news,

  1665. Jesus is the only

  1666. solution and you

1667. have to trust in him

  1668. or you're going to

  1669. hell.

  1670. Well, some of you

  1671. could be sitting here,

  1672. not like Nicodemus,

  1673. but like the woman

  1674. before she knew Jesus

1675. and every time a little

  1676. bit of conviction comes

  1677. into your life,

1678. you kind of try to skate

  1679. away from it.

  1680. Oh, I'm uncomfortable.

  1681. I didn't like that.

1682. That kind of makes me

  1683. feel bad about myself.

  1684. And the woman dodged

  1685. and dodged and dodged

1686. and what did Jesus do?

1687. He kept on chasing her

  1688. down.

1689. And so some of you have

  1690. been sitting here and

  1691. every time you turn

  1692. around, the spirit of

  1693. God is still convicting.

  1694. Can I tell you there's a

  1695. way to stop that?

  1696. Huh?

  1697. It's like, I get it.

  1698. I need him.

  1699. I can't undo the mess.

  1700. All right.

  1701. And here's the woman.

  1702. After she knew Jesus

1703. and she knew that she

  1704. was loved by Jesus

1705. and she knew that she

  1706. was forgiven by Jesus

  1707. and she was overwhelmed

  1708. by his grace,

1709. she spent the rest of

  1710. that day doing the

  1711. very simple and logical

  1712. thing of letting other

1713. people know who he is.

  1714. grace.

1715. Let me tell you something.

1716. What we do together is

  1717. enjoyable, but it's really

1718. not the main event of

  1719. worship.

1720. The main event of worship

1721. will be when we who know

  1722. Christ gather together in

1723. the presence of the Lord

1724. Jesus, the Savior of our

1725. souls and we without any

  1726. impediment, without any

  1727. cloud over the struggles

1728. we have in life, we will

  1729. worship him with unending

  1730. glory.

1731. What we do here is kind of

1732. encourage our souls for what

1733. he wants us to do out there.

  1734. Do you follow that?

1735. There are women at the

  1736. well.

1737. There are men in your

  1738. neighborhoods.

1739. There are children in your

  1740. school.

1741. There are mothers in your

  1742. group.

1743. There are people where you

1744. work whose lives are broken

  1745. and ruined by sin.

1746. And if you have been caught

1747. up with the sweetness of

1748. Jesus, you know what you

  1749. do?

1750. Come see the man who told me

1751. all that I ever did is not

  1752. this the Christ.

  1753. Let's pray.

1754. Holy Father, the truth of

1755. matter is, is the Lord Jesus

1756. is the supreme lover of our

1757. soul and the one who has

1758. called us to redeem us from

  1759. the pit.

1760. And it is so unbecoming for

1761. us who know the Lord Jesus

1762. Christ to have our lives

1763. clouded by the ugliness of

  1764. our own ill-spirited thoughts.

1765. When we in the presence of

1766. Christ may enjoy true worship

1767. and go out to a world that is

1768. broken and dying and plead with

  1769. them with tenderness and

1770. passion that they know the one

  1771. who knows us.

  1772. Today's a day of conviction.

1773. Some are here and don't know

1774. Christ and I would plead with

1775. you, Lord, that you would draw

1776. them to see their sin and to

  1777. confess their brokenness and

  1778. trust in Jesus.

1779. There are some here today that

1780. are believers whose lives are

1781. clouded by issues that have

  1782. compromised the sweetness of

  1783. their testimony.

1784. And it really comes down to

  1785. this.

1786. They need to be repentant and

  1787. humble.

1788. And ask you to renew their

1789. affection for the Lord Jesus

1790. that they may minister to the

  1791. world around them.

1792. And we ask this in Jesus' name.

  1793. Amen.

  1794. Amen.
