  1. I would like you to begin our time in the scriptures together this morning by turning to Romans

  2. ! chapter 6 verse 23 many of you probably know it by heart you know it by memory but if i were to take

  3. ! what is the bible focus of our time together this morning and kind of press it together into a single

  4. text this would probably be my choice how many of you know Romans chapter 6 verse 23 by heart you

    Romans 6:23

  5. take a stab at it and you'll get there okay for the wages of sin is death what happens when we sin

  6. the outcome is eventual death but the gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord

  7. I trust that's a verse that that you know I mean that that if you were to kind of compress your life

  8. down into one central statement about who you are and what counts as supremely important that that

  9. that text would be one of those that you hold on to because at the heart of our life and our existence

  10. is this issue of whether or not we are in relationship with Christ and were it not

  11. for the fact that God sent his son to die on the cross for my sins and for your sins the truth of

  12. the matter is is that we would not have the privilege and the hope of relationship with the

  13. Lord Jesus Christ what we are doing this morning and you see these elements up here you see the the

  14. bread and the cup what we're doing is we call the Lord's table or communion love feast is another

  15. term that the scripture uses and and I as I was praying earlier in the week last week actually thinking

  16. about the particulars of what we're going to look at this morning I thought it'd be appropriate for us

  17. to kind of take some time and and allow the scriptures to inform us remind us again of what we're doing

  18. there's a lot of different opinions about what happens in communion some people have the idea that

  19. taking communion is something that in some senses makes or breaks their relationship with Christ

  20. I remember talking with an individual who said to me boy I I'm I'm feeling a little uncertain about my

  21. spiritual state not well that's a curious thing to say to a pastor and so a natural and logical why is that well I

  22. haven't taken communion I

  23. I want to tell you something taking communion doesn't make you better or make you worse

  24. there's nothing in the act itself necessarily

  25. that has a saving effect

  26. it's not like when you die you get to say to Jesus well I get to come in because I took communion yesterday

  27. on the other hand there are some who believe that that communion is something that is something we

  28. shouldn't celebrate all the time after all when you celebrate something regularly guess what happens

  29. becomes too familiar I I don't buy into that and I'll get that point in a minute but but I want you to

  30. understand when we think about what we do when we come to this table the best way to figure out what's

  31. actually taking place is to do what is to open the Bible everybody said that well that's what we're

  32. expecting pastor we really want to look at scriptures and see what the Bible has to say

  33. so turn in your Bible to first Corinthians chapter 11 and we are going to take a broad look

    1 Corinthians 11 chapter mention

  34. at verses 23 through 34

  35. as we look at the passage we pick up there in verse 23 and I will read the passage till we come to verse 26 it says for I

  36. received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread

  37. and when he'd given thanks he broke it and said this is my body which is for you do this in remembrance of me

  38. in the same way he also took the cup after supper saying this cup is the new covenant in my blood do

  39. this as often as you drink it in remembrance of me for as often as you drink this bread

  40. help me here as you eat this bread and drink this cup you proclaim the Lord's death till he comes

  41. let's take a minute and pray

  42. our father

  43. we are desperate for your help

  44. we don't want to be so presumptuous that we think the matter of understanding the sweetness of the scripture

  45. is something that is left merely to our intellectual apprehension we rely

  46. upon the word that you've given us and we rely upon the indwelling Holy Spirit

  47. we ask that you would do a work in the hearts of your people this morning that would be something that is memorable

  48. affecting

  49. and leaves a a mark

  50. for the days to come

  51. that as a result of our attention to the word and as a result of the enabling of the Holy Spirit that we who know Christ

  52. would grow to be more like him and would be individuals who in this

  53. dark and failing world

  54. stand out as lights joyful in the confidence we have in complete forgiveness for all of our sins and the certainty of our eternal destiny

  55. !

  56. We ask this in Jesus name

  57. Amen!

  58. So as we begin our passage we want to recognize that when we take the Lord's table

  59. one of the things that we do is that we value reminders at the very beginning look there in verse 26

  60. it says this

  61. For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup you proclaim the Lord's death

  62. till he comes

  63. One of the ongoing questions that that floats around in different circles is how often should you practice the Lord's table?

  64. How often should you have communion? How often should a congregation be involved in in taking the bread and the elements?

  65. And there are some

  66. There are some groups of people that take it every Sunday

  67. There are some that take it once a quarter

  68. There are some that even take it less than that and I remember in one case asking a

  69. A group of pastors, so why is it that you celebrate once a quarter?

  70. And the answer was this a very interesting answer to me a curious one

  71. It said well, if you take it too often it becomes familiar

  72. I

  73. I remember being a little befuddled by that

  74. So how is it that taking something less often that you're supposed to do to remind yourself of things?

  75. How is it that that taking it less often becomes more special now?

  76. remember to

  77. God in the old testament gave explicit commands as to how often the passover was to be celebrated

  78. How often did you do that once a year?

  79. There were other specific times in which the nation of israel had particular feast days that had particular

  80. focuses

  81. When jesus gave instruction regarding the matter of the lord's table

  82. It is very interesting that he did not give to his people at that time any express directions as to how often we're to take it

  83. And so when we think about this question recognize that what the text tells us

  84. Informs us of his thought how often should we take it?

  85. The answer is whenever

  86. Whenever you choose in our fellowship. We have broken that down and there's no arbitrary

  87. Kind of mandate necessarily, but the rule of matter is that we generally take it about once a month

  88. Any of you that pay careful attention and I wouldn't give you extra points if you do

  89. But if you pay careful attention you notice that we generally do it about once a month

  90. We don't do it always on the same day. Sometimes we do it sunday morning

  91. Sometimes we do it sunday night sometime we do it wednesday sometime we do it sunday school and the reason for the variety in part

  92. Is to provide a little bit of diversity to kind of make you think in different frames and kind of challenge you

  93. Outside the space of well today is communion. I got turned my brain off. I know what we do pastor's going to go to first corinthians 11 again

  94. You know, it's like we've been there

  95. I want you to understand

  96. that we

  97. value

  98. reminders

  99. And we value the fact that scripture tells us that we can do this whenever so

  100. That being said remembering our lord's death for our sins is an important part of our relationship and that's what we're doing this morning

  101. We're reminding ourselves that jesus died in our place

  102. To those who would say well

  103. Here we are doing the same thing again

  104. And I think probably that uh

  105. Repetition has kind of dulled my sensibility

  106. I would encourage you to recognize that it's not repetition that is at the heart of your spiritual struggle

  107. The fact that you find a lack of affection at the moment is reflective of where your relationship is

  108. Not of the regularity with which you do it

  109. Case in point

  110. I

  111. I tell judith my bride of 44 years

  112. That I love her

  113. All the time

  114. It's not like I tell her once a week or once a quarter or once a month and uh, she should suffice with that

  115. Not only do I tell her every evening when we go to bed the last thing I say is judith

  116. I love you and she if she has not dozed off because I dawdled getting to bed

  117. She will say and then and by the way when I get there and she's dozed off I

  118. There are extra noises that go along with kind of waking her up for it

  119. Say I love you too, you know

  120. There's nothing wrong, right?

  121. Here's the deal

  122. My affection for my bride means that I tell her I love her often

  123. And there's nothing lost

  124. In the regularity and so I want you to understand

  125. That when you come to this table and you remind yourself of the love of the lord jesus for you

  126. Do not think that that here we go doing this again

  127. It's a little bit like saying I love you to the most important person in the world and there's benefit in doing it

  128. The elements certainly make his love clear

  129. And our love is stirred in response and I trust that as you walk away from here this morning

  130. Having taken the bread and taken the cup that one of the things that is very clear in your heart is this

  131. Jesus loves me and that will never never change

  132. Let me tell you something

  133. I cannot think

  134. Of many

  135. Spiritual truths

  136. That are more important than that to the believer

  137. Let me say it slowly

  138. I cannot think

  139. Of hardly any other spiritual truth for the believer that is more important than comprehending the unbelievable love of christ for you

  140. And so when you take that bread and you take that cup one of the things that I want you to say in your heart this morning is

  141. Jesus loves me

  142. I understand being amazed that he does

  143. I'm when I stop and think about me

  144. I just can't get over it

  145. He loves me

  146. And this morning the elements certainly make his love clear

  147. There's another thing that happens when we take communion we value the gospel

  148. We value the gospel

  149. The bread and the cup are

  150. Something to be understood

  151. In relationship to what the gospel actually is

  152. The fact

  153. Is here

  154. In physical

  155. Manifestation and evidence

  156. And so when we take the bread

  157. Jesus died for me

  158. And we take the cup

  159. He made a new

  160. How many of you understand what the word covenant means

  161. It means promise

  162. He made another promise

  163. By the way

  164. What was the first promise God made?

  165. Does anybody know?

  166. How many of you

  167. How many of you know what the old promise or the old covenant was?

  168. The first promise that was made

  169. He made it to Israel

  170. And he said this

  171. You keep my law

  172. And I will do thus and so

  173. How did that go for Israel?

  174. What's the answer?

  175. They did real well didn't they?

  176. It's like when I bump into people and I say

  177. Why are you getting to heaven?

  178. And they say well I've kept the ten commandments

  179. I think really?

  180. I've never met anybody

  181. Anybody

  182. Other than Jesus

  183. That keeps the ten commandments right?

  184. They're just kind of brain dead when they make that statement

  185. The fact is is the old covenant

  186. The old promise wasn't kept

  187. And God says I will make a new covenant

  188. I will make a new promise with you

  189. And that promise in essence in Jeremiah is this

  190. I will be your people and you will be

  191. I will be your God and you will be my people

  192. Can we stop doing this little inversion thing Tim?

  193. Let's get over that one

  194. I will be your God

  195. You will be my people

  196. I will put my law in your heart

  197. God says I'm going to do this work of conversion

  198. And this work of grace

  199. And you're going to be a different person than you used to be

  200. By virtue of my power

  201. And so when we take the elements

  202. We are engaged in reminding ourselves of the truth of the gospel

  203. And I want you to think about that

  204. Now let's understand that the gospel isn't something that is just for unbelievers

  205. Is the gospel needed for unbelievers?

  206. Absolutely

  207. And by the way

  208. Everybody smile so you understand this

  209. You can't have the gospel without first of all bringing people to grips with bad news

  210. What is the bad news?

  211. All men are pretty good

  212. They're going to make it somehow or another

  213. And all the paths just get there anyway

  214. How's that?

  215. If that is the news

  216. There's no need for Jesus

  217. Do you understand that?

  218. The bad news is that all men are sinners

  219. And stand justly condemned before a holy God

  220. And as the scripture says in Romans chapter 3 verse 10

    Romans 3:10

  221. There is none righteous

  222. No not one

  223. There's not a single person who will be able to stand before God

  224. The holy judge and say

  225. Hey aren't you glad I showed up because I'm good?

  226. No

  227. None righteous

  228. No not one

  229. And the gospel is something that is not only for the unbeliever

  230. But is something that the believer should wrap his heart around every single day

  231. When you think about the gospel

  232. I want you to turn over in your Bible

  233. You're in 1 Corinthians chapter 11

    1 Corinthians 11 chapter mention

  234. Just kind of skip to the back of the book

  235. Go to 1 Corinthians chapter 15

    1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention

  236. And we find there in verse 3 and 4

  237. That the apostle gets on the roll

  238. About the subject of the resurrection

  239. But the frame in which he starts is the gospel

  240. Now let's look at verse 3

  241. For I delivered to you as of first importance

  242. Do you know what he's saying?

  243. This is the most important thing

  244. This is the most important thing

  245. So let's try this so we understand the comparison

  246. You can go theoretically about three weeks without food

  247. Three days without water

  248. And three minutes without oxygen

  249. So what we would say is that oxygen is of what?

  250. First importance

  251. Get your hands around this

  252. The gospel remains supremely important for the believer

  253. And it is something that we ought to refresh our heart with

  254. On a regular basis

  255. What is the gospel?

  256. I want you to recognize there in the passage

  257. It says that Jesus died for our sins

  258. What does that mean?

  259. Well for one thing it means that I was a sinner

  260. And Jesus died in my place

  261. I love that fact

  262. Because what it tells me is that

  263. God sent his son the Lord Jesus Christ

  264. To pay the penalty for my sins

  265. And Jesus died to satisfy the debt

  266. And the judgment of God against me

  267. While it is true

  268. That jealousy

  269. Lying

  270. A brutal foreign power

  271. All of these things were really wrapped up

  272. And the issue of what was going on in the world

  273. That Jesus came into

  274. The fact of the matter is

  275. Is that that's not why Jesus came

  276. To deliver the people of Israel

  277. From a foreign invading and occupying force

  278. He came to deliver people from the burden of their sin

  279. And to help them find victory

  280. Over the battle that they had

  281. With what was going on inside

  282. And I want you to understand

  283. When you take the bread

  284. And you take the cup

  285. One of the things that I trust you are saying

  286. Is that Jesus died in my place

  287. He died my death

  288. He has satisfied the judgment of God

  289. Against my sin

  290. And as Romans chapter 8 verse 1 says

    Romans 8:1

  291. There is now therefore

  292. What?

  293. No condemnation to them

  294. Who are in Jesus Christ

  295. Christ Jesus

  296. We look at the passage

  297. And we also understand this

  298. It says that he was

  299. He was buried

  300. That he was raised

  301. On the third day

  302. In accordance with scripture

  303. So what is the significance

  304. Of his death

  305. Burial and resurrection

  306. By the way

  307. Next Sunday morning

  308. We are going to go

  309. Wall to wall

  310. With that truth

  311. That is going to be the center

  312. Of the message

  313. Of the resurrection Sunday

  314. Because next Sunday

  315. We celebrate the fact

  316. That Jesus is not still

  317. In the tomb

  318. You can't go to some city

  319. Over in the Middle East

  320. And find out

  321. Well that's where he's buried

  322. He's not there

  323. And you know what

  324. He's coming back again

  325. I like that

  326. I'd like it to be today

  327. And if it's not going to be today

  328. I'll settle for tomorrow

  329. Right?

  330. But the truth of the matter is

  331. Is that Jesus died for my sins

  332. And he rose again

  333. And the reality of it is

  334. His resurrection

  335. Makes it clear

  336. That my debt

  337. Has been satisfied

  338. Situation came up

  339. Not long ago

  340. At a call

  341. Tim

  342. Have you paid this bill?

  343. Well the truth of the matter is

  344. Is if I paid a bill

  345. It would be a real surprise

  346. My wife takes care of that

  347. And so what I did

  348. Was I called her up

  349. I said

  350. Honey

  351. I just got a call

  352. From somebody in Florida

  353. Have you paid this bill?

  354. She says yes

  355. She says here

  356. Let me pull it up

  357. How many of you like electronics?

  358. Sometimes

  359. She sent me

  360. A text

  361. With a picture of the canceled check

  362. And I thought

  363. Woo!

  364. Ha ha!

  365. Called the guy back up

  366. I said

  367. Well yeah

  368. I've got a canceled check here

  369. In fact

  370. In fact

  371. She's got your endorsement

  372. On the back

  373. See when Jesus rose from the dead

  374. It was like

  375. Paid in full

  376. Right?

  377. Done

  378. Settled

  379. How do I know

  380. That there is complete forgiveness

  381. For all of the sin

  382. That I've committed?

  383. It's because Jesus rose from the dead

  384. I get pumped about that

  385. And I want you to understand

  386. This morning

  387. When we take these elements

  388. We take this bread

  389. And we take this cup

  390. We remind ourselves

  391. Of what Jesus has done

  392. And there shouldn't be a day

  393. Pass

  394. There shouldn't be a day

  395. Pass

  396. Without a thought

  397. Of the blessing

  398. Of what Jesus did

  399. Do you follow that?

  400. I won't tell you all

  401. Of what I say to Judith at night

  402. But

  403. I tell her

  404. Thank you for marrying me

  405. You know

  406. It's like

  407. I would live in a cave

  408. I mean

  409. I would live in squalor

  410. Do you know what squalor is?

  411. I would live in just

  412. An abject misery

  413. Were it not for the fact

  414. That God in his kindness

  415. Gave me the bride

  416. That she did

  417. Or he did

  418. She did

  419. Woo!

  420. Let's try

  421. He and he only

  422. Male

  423. Not gender neutral

  424. But anyway

  425. How many

  426. How many mistakes

  427. Am I allowed deacons?

  428. I'm just checking

  429. Because I'm getting up there

  430. Heaven help me

  431. How many of you

  432. Are praying for me anyway?

  433. You're doing that?

  434. You probably ought to start now

  435. Because I'm bumping

  436. Up against the line here

  437. Okay

  438. Well back we go

  439. The truth of the matter is

  440. Is that

  441. I live with a thankful spirit

  442. For what Jesus has done

  443. In giving me the bride

  444. That he gave me

  445. But let me tell you something

  446. That doesn't compare

  447. To the blessing

  448. Of who I have in Christ

  449. And what I have in Christ

  450. And it's not only

  451. When I come to this table

  452. That I should remind myself

  453. Of that

  454. There's something else

  455. That we value

  456. Going back to

  457. 1 Corinthians chapter 11

    1 Corinthians 11 chapter mention

  458. We value public testimony

  459. I want you to put

  460. Your little finger

  461. On the word proclaim

  462. Okay

  463. The word proclaim

  464. I've talked about this before

  465. But it's a word in the Greek

  466. That carries the idea

  467. Of public announcement

  468. And as I was studying

  469. This week

  470. I was struck by

  471. By doing a little bit

  472. Of research

  473. In the Greek itself

  474. To understand

  475. That it's not just

  476. An announcement

  477. Kind of a generic announcement

  478. But it's an announcement

  479. That carries with it

  480. The implicit issue

  481. Of the value

  482. And supremacy

  483. Of the gospel itself

  484. It's an announcement

  485. That by the way

  486. In which the word

  487. Is used in the Greek

  488. It's the idea

  489. Of something being announced

  490. From a higher place

  491. To a lower place

  492. And when we announce

  493. The gospel

  494. We are announcing

  495. The glory of Christ

  496. Down to our fallen

  497. And broken lives

  498. And to the world

  499. Around us

  500. And so there is

  501. A sense

  502. In which

  503. When we take

  504. The Lord's table

  505. We are

  506. We are announcing

  507. The supremacy

  508. Of Christ

  509. And we're announcing

  510. The significance

  511. And the sufficiency

  512. Of the gospel

  513. Do you understand that?

  514. I believe

  515. Jesus died for me

  516. And this is the best news

  517. In the world

  518. Now listen to me

  519. How can you say that

  520. And not believe it?

  521. Do you follow that?

  522. Let me give you

  523. An illustration

  524. Just so you follow along

  525. I have been

  526. To several

  527. Graduations

  528. Of two of my sons

  529. Went into the military

  530. And two of my grandsons

  531. Have been in the military

  532. So far

  533. And so

  534. I kind of like

  535. Military graduations

  536. And one of the things

  537. That goes with

  538. Military graduations

  539. Is a lot of flag business

  540. How many of you

  541. Understand that?

  542. Flag this

  543. Flag that

  544. And you stand

  545. And you sing

  546. The national anthem

  547. And I'm all into singing

  548. I mean how many

  549. Figures that out?

  550. I mean I like to sing

  551. I don't always get

  552. The words right

  553. But I do sing

  554. And I even

  555. A judgmental person

  556. That I am

  557. I'm kind of looking around

  558. And I see people

  559. They're not singing

  560. Well I'm thinking

  561. Maybe they're not citizens

  562. I mean if you're not a citizen

  563. Don't sing the song

  564. Yeah

  565. Yeah just chewing gum

  566. But if you are

  567. A citizen

  568. And particularly

  569. If you're in the military

  570. When you're singing

  571. When everybody else

  572. Is singing the national anthem

  573. What do you think

  574. They expect from you?

  575. I mean as the camera

  576. Is panning through

  577. The audience you know

  578. And your CO

  579. Is going to be

  580. Kind of reading

  581. See who's not involved

  582. Is like

  583. What was the deal with you?

  584. You're not into this?

  585. So let's come back around

  586. When we take communion

  587. What we're doing

  588. Is actually giving

  589. Public testimony

  590. To what we believe

  591. About Jesus

  592. Huh?

  593. You with that?

  594. And by the way

  595. Don't be a hypocrite

  596. Oh I love Jesus

  597. He's really important to me

  598. Go outside and sit in the car

  599. And grumble

  600. About somebody else

  601. Not good

  602. If Jesus

  603. Has got a hold

  604. Of your heart

  605. In here

  606. I guarantee you

  607. He'll have a hold

  608. Of your heart

  609. Out there

  610. If you're playing

  611. A game in here

  612. Then all that happens

  613. Out there

  614. Is just the real thing

  615. And the purpose

  616. Of coming to this table

  617. In part

  618. Is to refresh

  619. Our consciences

  620. With the sweetness

  621. Of the one

  622. Who has become

  623. Our savior

  624. And given us

  625. Complete forgiveness

  626. For all of our sins

  627. And helped us

  628. To stop being

  629. The skunk

  630. We used to be

  631. And so I want you

  632. To bear public testimony

  633. You boldly announce

  634. That he is the savior

  635. To all others

  636. He is your savior

  637. I would not

  638. Be bothered

  639. If when you took

  640. The bread

  641. And took the cup

  642. This morning

  643. Some of you

  644. Had enough nerve

  645. And I know

  646. It's going to be

  647. Unsettling

  648. For some of you

  649. I wouldn't be bothered

  650. If some of you said

  651. Man I love Jesus

  652. I'm glad

  653. He is my savior

  654. And say it

  655. Loud enough

  656. That someone else

  657. Can hear it

  658. That would be

  659. Textually

  660. Probably

  661. Within the circle

  662. Right

  663. Okay

  664. Well

  665. Here we go

  666. Point four

  667. We value

  668. Self-examination

  669. Now you look

  670. At the passage

  671. And verse 27

  672. Says

  673. Whoever therefore

  674. Eats the bread

  675. Or drinks the cup

  676. Of the Lord

  677. In an unworthy manner

  678. Will be guilty

  679. Concerning the body

  680. And blood

  681. Of the Lord

  682. Let a man

  683. Examine himself

  684. By the way

  685. Who should do

  686. The examination

  687. You come and sit

  688. In my office

  689. And I say

  690. Oh what sins

  691. Have you committed

  692. Today

  693. That's not how

  694. It is in the Bible

  695. Who does the examination

  696. How many of you

  697. Understand the language

  698. Here it says

  699. Let a man

  700. Huh

  701. What

  702. Examine himself

  703. By the way

  704. Your heart

  705. Bears testimony

  706. To what it knows

  707. About you

  708. I want you to

  709. Understand there's

  710. Another piece

  711. In this

  712. It's interesting

  713. Also

  714. And let's just

  715. Take a moment

  716. To recognize

  717. This

  718. That actually

  719. Paul

  720. Takes

  721. 27

  722. 28

  723. 29

  724. 30

  725. And 31

  726. That's five

  727. Verses

  728. To deal with

  729. This matter

  730. Of self-examination

  731. In comparison

  732. To the brevity

  733. Of some of the

  734. Other parts

  735. Of the Lord's

  736. Table

  737. This business

  738. Of self-examination

  739. Is actually

  740. Pretty important

  741. I think it's easy

  742. For us to become

  743. Insensitive to our

  744. Struggle with

  745. Indwelling sin

  746. We get

  747. Comfortable

  748. The private

  749. Thoughts that we

  750. Would have

  751. That we'd be

  752. Ashamed of

  753. Voice

  754. Publicly

  755. That we live

  756. With from day

  757. To day

  758. And we become

  759. Quite

  760. Accommodating

  761. With those

  762. Things

  763. You know

  764. The unkind

  765. And ungodly

  766. Things that

  767. You say

  768. That you

  769. Would never

  770. Say in front

  771. Of a deacon

  772. Or a pastor

  773. But you do

  774. Say in the

  775. Safety of

  776. Your own

  777. Home

  778. Or you

  779. Say to

  780. Your wife

  781. With a

  782. Surly

  783. And sour

  784. Spirit

  785. Those

  786. Things

  787. Those are

  788. The kind

  789. Of things

  790. That you

  791. Need to

  792. Confess

  793. And forsake

  794. It is in

  795. The white

  796. Hot light

  797. Of the

  798. Cross

  799. And what

  800. The bread

  801. And the

  802. Cup

  803. Tell us

  804. About his

  805. Death

  806. For our

  807. Sins

  808. That our

  809. Sin becomes

  810. Supremely

  811. Offensive

  812. You know

  813. We're too

  814. Comfortable

  815. With sin

  816. Agreed

  817. Agreed

  818. What kind of

  819. Sins

  820. Did Jesus

  821. Die for

  822. Hello

  823. One bite

  824. Of fruit

  825. His

  826. Sacrifice

  827. For sins

  828. Reminds

  829. Us

  830. It reminds

  831. Us

  832. Of just

  833. How offensive

  834. Sin is

  835. And so

  836. Let me

  837. Say here

  838. That self

  839. Examination

  840. Must also

  841. Be spirit

  842. Enabled

  843. Turn to

  844. John

  845. 13

  846. Just for

  847. A moment

  848. John chapter

    John 13 chapter mention

  849. 13

  850. Very interesting

  851. Passage

  852. It actually

  853. Touches

  854. On three

  855. Different

  856. Pieces

  857. John chapter

    John 13 chapter mention

  858. 13

  859. We find

  860. Jesus

  861. Washing

  862. The feet

  863. Of the

  864. Disciples

  865. Plural

  866. And you'll

  867. Remember that

  868. Peter said

  869. You never

  870. Wash in

  871. My feet

  872. And Jesus

  873. Says

  874. You know

  875. What

  876. Yeah

  877. The thing

  878. That I

  879. Want us

  880. To focus

  881. On here

  882. Is that

  883. When Jesus

  884. Washes

  885. The disciples

  886. Feet

  887. One of

  888. The things

  889. That he

  890. Is indicating

  891. Is that

  892. In the

  893. Life of

  894. The believer

  895. There is

  896. A need

  897. For recurring

  898. Attention

  899. To the

  900. Ongoing

  901. Struggle

  902. We have

  903. With indwelling

  904. Sin

  905. How many

  906. Of you

  907. Have sinned

  908. Today

  909. Just a

  910. Couple

  911. Of you

  912. Okay

  913. The way

  914. In which

  915. We take

  916. Care of

  917. Sin

  918. When it

  919. Happens

  920. Is we

  921. Confess it

  922. And forsake

  923. It and we

  924. Ask him

  925. To help

  926. Us grow

  927. In righteousness

  928. Isn't that

  929. Right

  930. And so

  931. When we

  932. Come to

  933. The table

  934. One of

  935. The things

  936. That we

  937. Ought to

  938. Do is

  939. We ought

  940. To call

  941. On the

  942. Spirit

  943. And ask

  944. Him

  945. To help

  946. To help

  947. You be

  948. Objective

  949. And genuinely

  950. Repentant so

  951. That when you

  952. Take these

  953. Elements you

  954. Take them

  955. With the

  956. Right

  957. Heart

  958. Finally

  959. We value

  960. Togetherness

  961. I want you

  962. To look at

  963. This and

  964. We'll close

  965. Have the

  966. Men come

  967. If you

  968. Look at

  969. 1st

  970. Corinthians

  971. 11

  972. Verse 33

  973. And 34

  974. Paul makes

  975. A very

  976. Interesting

  977. Statement

  978. That

  979. On the

  980. Face of

  981. It

  982. Would be

  983. A little

  984. Confusing

  985. Listen to

  986. What he

  987. Says

  988. Here

  989. Verse 33

  990. So then

  991. My brothers

  992. When you

  993. Come together

  994. To eat

  995. Wait for

  996. One another

  997. How many

  998. Have you

  999. Ever seen

  1000. People eating

  1001. At a

  1002. Military

  1003. !

  1004. Academy

  1005. Have you

  1006. Ever seen

  1007. That?

  1008. They sit

  1009. Down

  1010. Everything's

  1011. You know

  1012. It's like

  1013. We're

  1014. We're

  1015. All

  1016. Together

  1017. And how

  1018. Many of

  1019. You have

  1020. Been in

  1021. A home

  1022. Where nobody

  1023. Eats until

  1024. They pray

  1025. And then

  1026. What happens

  1027. It descends

  1028. Into bedlam

  1029. You know

  1030. But until

  1031. You pray

  1032. What?

  1033. Paul is

  1034. Not telling

  1035. The church

  1036. At Corinth

  1037. All right

  1038. All right

  1039. Wait till

  1040. Everybody has

  1041. A spoon

  1042. That's loaded

  1043. And then

  1044. Do it

  1045. That's not

  1046. What he's

  1047. Saying

  1048. What he is

  1049. Saying

  1050. Is that

  1051. We are

  1052. One

  1053. Body

  1054. If you

  1055. Were to

  1056. Go back

  1057. Earlier in

  1058. First Corinthians

  1059. In verse

  1060. 21 and

  1061. 22

  1062. You'll see

  1063. That the

  1064. Problem

  1065. The church

  1066. Had then

  1067. Was not

  1068. This matter

  1069. Of

  1070. Well you

  1071. Started five

  1072. Minutes

  1073. Before I

  1074. Did

  1075. That wasn't

  1076. The problem

  1077. They were

  1078. They were

  1079. Divided

  1080. They weren't

  1081. Together

  1082. And so

  1083. This word

  1084. That is

  1085. Actually

  1086. Being used

  1087. Here

  1088. Is a

  1089. Word that

  1090. You could

  1091. Probably

  1092. Better

  1093. Translate

  1094. So then

  1095. My brothers

  1096. When you

  1097. Come together

  1098. To eat

  1099. Wait for

  1100. One another

  1101. Is not

  1102. The idea

  1103. It is

  1104. To receive

  1105. One another

  1106. To accept

  1107. One another

  1108. Hey

  1109. There is

  1110. Nothing

  1111. That should

  1112. Be more

  1113. Unifying

  1114. To the

  1115. Natural

  1116. Struggle

  1117. We have

  1118. With

  1119. Divided

  1120. Relationships

  1121. Than the

  1122. Reminder

  1123. Of the

  1124. Fact that

  1125. Jesus

  1126. Is our

  1127. Savior

  1128. How many

  1129. Of you

  1130. Understand

  1131. That

  1132. How many

  1133. Of you

  1134. Here

  1135. Struggle

  1136. With your

  1137. Attitudes

  1138. Towards

  1139. Other

  1140. People

  1141. And some

  1142. Of them

  1143. Are in

  1144. The family

  1145. Of god

  1146. Taking

  1147. The lord's

  1148. Table

  1149. Should be

  1150. Something

  1151. That draws

  1152. You

  1153. Together

  1154. Because

  1155. Now that

  1156. You remind

  1157. Yourself

  1158. Of what

  1159. Jesus

  1160. Did for

  1161. You

  1162. And who

  1163. He is

  1164. And how

  1165. You have

  1166. Relationship

  1167. With other

  1168. People

  1169. Because of

  1170. The cross

  1171. You're drawn

  1172. Together

  1173. I remember

  1174. I remember

  1175. Saying to my

  1176. Bride

  1177. Judith

  1178. The other

  1179. Day

  1180. We were

  1181. Working

  1182. Through a

  1183. Family

  1184. Dynamic

  1185. And I

  1186. Have a

  1187. Brother and

  1188. A sister

  1189. That are

  1190. Not saved

  1191. And as a

  1192. Result of

  1193. That we

  1194. Have some

  1195. Interesting

  1196. Moments

  1197. Hello

  1198. And I

  1199. Remember

  1200. Saying to

  1201. Her

  1202. Well

  1203. Honey

  1204. We have

  1205. To work

  1206. At that

  1207. Because we're

  1208. Family

  1209. I am

  1210. Family

  1211. With my

  1212. Brother and

  1213. Sister

  1214. Biologically

  1215. I am

  1216. Family

  1217. With some

  1218. Of you

  1219. By divine

  1220. Appointment

  1221. And the

  1222. Blood of

  1223. Christ

  1224. Do you

  1225. Understand

  1226. That

  1227. I am

  1228. Your

  1229. Brother

  1230. And you

  1231. Are my

  1232. Sister

  1233. You are

  1234. My

  1235. Brother

  1236. And when

  1237. I take

  1238. Communion

  1239. One of the

  1240. Things that

  1241. Jesus wants

  1242. Me to

  1243. Remember

  1244. Is the

  1245. Fact that

  1246. We are

  1247. Family

  1248. Because of

  1249. Jesus

  1250. Okay

  1251. I'm going to

  1252. Ask the

  1253. Men to

  1254. Come

  1255. And

  1256. John

  1257. One of the

  1258. Things that

  1259. We have

  1260. Enjoyed

  1261. In the

  1262. Past

  1263. Is

  1264. Singing

  1265. Together

  1266. And I'm

  1267. Going to

  1268. Have John

  1269. Lead us

  1270. I want

  1271. Pastors

  1272. All on the

  1273. Inside

  1274. This time

  1308. We

  1309. Drink

  1310. Of

  1311. His

  1312. Sacrifice

  1313. As

  1314. A

  1315. Sign

  1316. Of

  1317. Our

  1318. Bonds

  1319. Of

  1320. Peace

  1321. Around

1337. Paid the price to make us one.

1338. And when he'd given thanks, he broke it and said,

1339. This is my body, which is for you.

1340. And I will do this in remembrance of me.

1341. I'm still here with you.

  1376. our soul

  1377. to follow

  1378. in the steps

  1379. of Christ

  1380. as His

  1381. body

  1382. as we share

  1383. as we share

  1384. as we share

  1385. as we share

  1386. as we share

  1387. We proclaim

  1388. And will join
