  1. I would like you to turn in your Bibles this morning.

  2. Isn't that a sweet phrase?

  3. Turn in your Bible.

  4. What we confess together with that statement and your activity

  5. is that we are a people who have been drawn out of darkness into light

  6. ! by the Bible, by the truth,

  7. that God has given to us.

  8. And we, in this broken and very difficult world that we live in,

  9. may rely upon every word that God has given to us

  10. for comfort, for counsel, for encouragement,

  11. that our hearts might, for one thing,

  12. be resolute in our pursuit of the glory of Christ

  13. and also confident in our eternal end.

  14. And I trust this morning that as you take your Bible in hand,

  15. you do not take it for granted.

  16. And that one of the things you're actually doing,

  17. I didn't even look at my watch to know how much time I have to do this,

  18. but, oh, we've got time.

  19. And one of the things that you're actually doing is you're engaged in prayer.

  20. This is not the passive part of the hour.

  21. It is every bit as demanding that you be engaged in what we do together

  22. as during our corporate singing.

  23. And by the way, the most important singers are not on stage.

  24. They're here.

  25. They're God's people.

  26. The people who are up here, John and whoever the musicians are,

  27. their heart's ambition is to help you lift up Jesus.

  28. Do you understand that?

  29. They're not here to entertain you.

  30. They are here to stir your heart with a desire to see the Lord Jesus exalted.

  31. And that's one of the reasons why one of the standard questions

  32. that John and I ask each other is not,

  33. how did the musicians do?

  34. Did the pianist come in on the right note?

  35. I mean, that's John's business, but not.

  36. I always, how did we sing, right?

  37. How did we sing?

  38. Because the truth of the matter is,

  39. is that when people who are filled with the Spirit

  40. are touched with the joy of the Lord Jesus Christ,

  41. it happens to come out.

  42. Agreed?

  43. Agreed?

  44. Okay.

  45. So here we are.

  46. We're at this very active part of the service,

  47. and some of you are thinking,

  48. I thought I could kind of sit here and just kind of brain dead

  49. and float through,

  50. and 45 minutes from now I can think about leaving.

  51. You have an active part in what happens next,

  52. both in being a Spirit-enabled listener,

  53. and that means you need to say to the Holy Spirit,

  54. will you please help me?

  55. Secondly, I might miss some of the important things that you have,

  56. and I want your help to hear the things that are valuable,

  57. and I need to remember.

  58. Secondly, that you would remember to pray for me as I preach.

  59. Do that.

  60. Pray for me as I preach.

  61. I don't care if you do it out loud.

  62. It won't put me off,

  63. because we are dependent upon the work of the Holy Spirit.

  64. So I want you to look in John to chapter 4, verse 39,

  65. and kind of back up with me just for a moment,

  66. and it helps to kind of frame the passage.

  67. Let me have you, as you are in John chapter 4,

    John 4 chapter mention

  68. to turn back just for a moment

  69. to the very beginning of the book of John

  70. and remind yourself that John is a different gospel than the rest.

  71. Matthew, Mark, and Luke are called synoptic,

  72. and they give us kind of a synopsis.

  73. They give us an overview of the life of Christ.

  74. John is different in that while it gives us much about Christ,

  75. it is not focused primarily on the historical

  76. or the chronological details of Christ's 33 years here on earth.

  77. It is focused primarily on driving home this point.

  78. Jesus is the Son of God and the Savior of the world.

  79. And John gets right to that task immediately

  80. in John chapter 1 where he says there in verse 1,

    John 1 chapter mention

  81. in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God,

  82. and the Word was God.

  83. Boom! You got it?

  84. No hesitation and no waffling.

  85. It's like, well, he was a pretty good person.

  86. Bang! He is God.

  87. Not only that, but the Scriptures roll on with power,

  88. and you come down to what it says there in verse 14,

  89. and the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.

  90. Talking about the incarnation.

  91. God the Son for all eternity taking on human form.

  92. And John, as he continues in explaining the matter of who Jesus is,

  93. he says, here is God the Son who came to earth

  94. and took upon himself human flesh.

  95. Why?

  96. Why?

  97. We understand from what John the Baptist says right there in chapter 1,

  98. when he saw Jesus coming, he said,

  99. Behold the Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world.

  100. And so John chapter 1 lays out for us in clear, clear vocabulary

    John 1 chapter mention

  101. who Jesus is as God the Son, the Savior of the world.

  102. Chapter 2, then, gives us a very interesting picture

  103. of Jesus in two rather different settings.

  104. One is the wedding feast at Cana,

  105. where he privately, and known primarily,

  106. just to his mother and disciples,

  107. turns the water into wine and demonstrates his power over nature.

  108. And then chapter 2, the latter part of it,

  109. guess what he does?

  110. He cleanses the temple.

  111. I mean, I want you to imagine,

  112. in contemporary vocabulary,

  113. someone walking into the Supreme Court

  114. and throwing all those 12 out on their ear.

  115. That's, in essence, what Jesus did when he cleansed the temple.

  116. Chapter 3 gives us...

  117. Now, by the way, Jesus came to be what?

  118. Say it with me.

  119. The Savior of the world.

  120. He came to save lost mankind.

  121. Chapter 3 gives us our first picture

  122. of Jesus interacting with an individual

  123. who desperately needed Christ.

  124. Nicodemus came to Jesus by night,

  125. and he had some little curious spiritual questions,

  126. and Jesus nailed him with,

  127. You know what?

  128. You have to be born again.

  129. Nicodemus was kind of at the high end of the food chain

  130. of being an effective, religious, good Jew.

  131. And Jesus said,

  132. You have to have a do-over because you're not there.

  133. Nicodemus passes from the scene.

  134. We have no indication of his conversion at that time.

  135. And then we come to chapter 4,

  136. and guess who chapter 4 is all about?

  137. I mean, it's a scuzzbag, a lowlife.

  138. It is the woman at the well, the Samaritan,

  139. and she was a woman who had been married five times,

  140. and what?

  141. She was living with a man at the time.

  142. And so we have a picture,

  143. Nicodemus on this side,

  144. the Mr. Goody-goody,

  145. and here we have Mrs. Samaritan,

  146. not the goody-goody,

  147. and Jesus meets her at the well,

  148. and he allows the conversation

  149. to drift over into spiritual things.

  150. And that's where we are now.

  151. In John 4, verse 39,

    John 4:39

  152. let me pick up on the passage and read it to you.

  153. It says,

  154. Many Samaritans from town believed in him because...

  155. And I want you to put your finger.

  156. You may even want to underline because...

  157. I'll start right from the get-go here

  158. and just ask yourself this question.

  159. Are there people that you know have come to faith

  160. because of your testimony?

  161. That's a fair question, isn't it?

  162. I mean, after all,

  163. and this is one of the things I was thinking about

  164. as I was meditating and praying earlier this morning

  165. about our message,

  166. I was thinking about how many illustrations in the Bible we have

  167. of people who discover great news

  168. and just kind of sit on it.

  169. I mean, I was like,

  170. Yeah, it's a good thing.

  171. I'm glad Jesus saved me.

  172. I was a wretch,

  173. but I'm not telling anybody

  174. because I don't want anybody to know.

  175. Right?

  176. I mean, every case you have,

  177. and I was reading, actually,

  178. in my morning devotions

  179. about where Jesus would heal these people

  180. who were blind

  181. or he would heal these people who were deaf,

  182. and he would say to them,

  183. Don't go tell anybody.

  184. Right?

  185. How would they handle that instruction?

  186. Right on.

  187. I won't tell anybody.

  188. I can see you,

  189. but I'm not talking about it.

  190. Right?

  191. They were all over the place

  192. talking about the wonder

  193. and the miracle that they'd enjoyed

  194. and in classic fashion,

  195. here is the woman saved from her sin,

  196. and she runs back into town,

  197. and she lets them know who Jesus is.

  198. Let me read the passage as we go on.

  199. It says,

  200. Many Samaritans from the town

  201. believed in him

  202. because of the woman's testimony.

  203. He told me all that I ever did.

  204. And so when the Samaritans came to him,

  205. they asked him to stay with them,

  206. and he stayed with them two days.

  207. And many more believed

  208. because of his word.

  209. They said to the woman,

  210. It is no longer because of what you said

  211. that we believe,

  212. for we have heard for ourselves,

  213. and we know that this indeed

  214. is the Savior of the world.

  215. Now, we have in this passage this morning

  216. a very, very interesting little conclusion

  217. to the earlier two scenes,

  218. one of Nicodemus

  219. and the other of the woman at the well

  220. who came face to face with Jesus

  221. as Jesus dealt with the heart needs

  222. of Nicodemus and the woman.

  223. And one of the things

  224. that I want you to take away

  225. from the passage this morning

  226. is a clear understanding

  227. of what saving faith is.

  228. What does it mean

  229. to be saved

  230. or be converted

  231. or to be born again?

  232. And you see,

  233. it's a very important question

  234. because the truth of the matter is

  235. is that heaven and hell

  236. rest on the outcome.

  237. When we come to that moment

  238. in our lives

  239. where we slip from this place

  240. into eternity,

  241. I want you to know

  242. that Tim Knoyer

  243. has complete confidence

  244. in how the story ends.

  245. Not because I've been

  246. a good person

  247. and I have done

  248. all these nice things

  249. that, you know,

  250. like helping elderly ladies

  251. across the street

  252. and taking care

  253. of my neighbor's cat

  254. and those kind of...

  255. That's not why

  256. I'm going to heaven.

  257. I want you to know that.

  258. I'm going to heaven

  259. because Jesus Christ

  260. is my Savior

  261. and He died in my place

  262. and He satisfied

  263. the debt of my sin

  264. and I trust in

  265. His finished work alone.

  266. And I want you to understand

  267. as you look at the passage

  268. that we're going to look at

  269. this morning,

  270. what John's gospel

  271. wants us to see

  272. is what is saving faith.

  273. Saving faith, for one,

  274. is knowing the truth

  275. about our need.

  276. Saving faith

  277. is knowing the truth

  278. about our need.

  279. And since the Bible

  280. is something

  281. that gives us the truth,

  282. I think it's very important

  283. for us to allow the Bible

  284. to be the primary instrument

  285. of helping us grab

  286. and get a hold

  287. of the reality

  288. of what saving faith is.

  289. And so I want you

  290. to mark that little phrase there

  291. in verse 39.

  292. It says here,

  293. many Samaritans from town

  294. believed because

  295. of the woman's testimony.

  296. What the Samaritan woman

  297. had done

  298. is that she had gone

  299. back into town

  300. and she'd given a report.

  301. That word testimony

  302. that is used there

  303. is a word that speaks

  304. in the Greek

  305. of bearing witness

  306. to something

  307. that you are

  308. a first-hand witness to.

  309. You may talk about

  310. the fact that there was

  311. a wreck on 270

  312. and you saw pictures of it,

  313. but I can tell you this,

  314. the police officers

  315. are not going to rely

  316. on hearsay evidence

  317. that you had from the news.

  318. They want to actually

  319. hear from a witness

  320. what happened in that event.

  321. And what the word tells us

  322. is this woman went back

  323. into town and she says,

  324. I saw it.

  325. I saw Jesus.

  326. I heard what he had to say

  327. and I am giving you testimony

  328. of the reality of who he is

  329. and what he had to say to me.

  330. And here is Jesus

  331. as he ministered to this woman.

  332. He brought conviction

  333. to her life

  334. and she goes back into town

  335. and she says,

  336. hey, I want you to meet the man

  337. who exposed the truth

  338. of my sinful state

  339. and also delivered me

  340. from sin's grip.

  341. Not only did he expose

  342. the reality of the hardness

  343. and the despair of my soul,

  344. but he also gave me hope

  345. in that he identified himself

  346. as the Messiah,

  347. the one who came

  348. to be the sacrifice

  349. for my sins.

  350. And what this says is this,

  351. is that belief

  352. or saving faith

  353. really follows

  354. hearing the truth

  355. and understanding it.

  356. And I think that's very important

  357. because we have people

  358. going around today

  359. presupposing that

  360. the fundamental responsibility

  361. of the church

  362. is to make people happy.

  363. Now, I want people happy,

  364. but people can't be happy

  365. until they hear difficult news

  366. about the reality

  367. of their soul.

  368. Over the years,

  369. one of the things

  370. that has happened

  371. over and over and over again,

  372. and spring is here,

  373. and so it's starting the process.

  374. I get regular calls.

  375. People ask,

  376. can we use the church

  377. to have a wedding?

  378. And my standard answer,

  379. guess what it is?

  380. Some of you know.

  381. It's,

  382. I am so glad you called

  383. because we love the opportunity

  384. of helping a couple

  385. who know Jesus

  386. establish their home

  387. with Jesus in the center.

  388. And I say,

  389. it's our blessing

  390. and our privilege,

  391. and I would love

  392. to have you

  393. and your fiance

  394. come and visit us.

  395. Oh, I don't need

  396. to visit you.

  397. I've seen the church.

  398. Really?

  399. Yeah, I was on the web.

  400. I thought the building

  401. would be pretty suitable

  402. for our wedding.

  403. wedding.

  404. Well, you want to do

  405. the reception here?

  406. Oh, no, we're going to

  407. blah, blah, blah.

  408. You know, I'm going to do it there.

  409. But we just want to have

  410. a ceremony

  411. in a sacred place.

  412. Hey, church is you.

  413. It's not this place.

  414. And I say,

  415. well, the rest of the family

  416. wants to be in there thinking,

  417. oh, do I have to pay

  418. for all those people

  419. eating with me?

  420. You know, I say,

  421. no, no, no.

  422. Just, we want to be part

  423. of seeing your home

  424. centered on Jesus.

  425. Well, I'm not interested

  426. in that part.

  427. I just was looking

  428. for a facility to rent

  429. to kind of do this thing.

  430. Well, we're not into that.

  431. We are here

  432. to help people grow

  433. in their relationship

  434. with Christ.

  435. And here is Jesus

  436. explaining that

  437. this starting point

  438. of developing

  439. a relationship

  440. with Christ

  441. is coming to

  442. a realization

  443. of the darkness

  444. of the soul

  445. and the desperation

  446. that sinners are in

  447. because of sin

  448. that draws them

  449. and separates them

  450. from God.

  451. So what is saving faith?

  452. I think it helps

  453. for one

  454. to just kind of stop

  455. and recognize

  456. what it is not.

  457. For one,

  458. saving faith

  459. is not mere feeling.

  460. Feelings can be caused

  461. by so many different things.

  462. And any of you

  463. who know me

  464. know that feelings

  465. kind of,

  466. there they are.

  467. I was at the

  468. ordination council.

  469. You know,

  470. and I had,

  471. you know,

  472. at 66,

  473. I had resolved

  474. being an older man now

  475. that when I asked questions,

  476. I would be kind of

  477. just calm

  478. and quiet

  479. and not get emotional.

  480. You know,

  481. I was like,

  482. have you ever seen me

  483. cry at a wedding?

  484. Never done it.

  485. And so,

  486. you know,

  487. here they,

  488. I mean,

  489. I'm sitting towards the back

  490. and that's a safe place

  491. for an older guy,

  492. you know,

  493. towards the back.

  494. And they said,

  495. well,

  496. we're going to ask

  497. that Pastor Knoyer

  498. asked the first question.

  499. So I got started

  500. and guess what happened?

  501. Just calm,

  502. quiet voice.

  503. You know,

  504. and

  505. I was thinking

  506. of the blessing

  507. of being a pastor

  508. and then

  509. being there

  510. as a pastor

  511. and watching

  512. a young man

  513. that had grown up

  514. in our church,

  515. there

  516. sitting alone

  517. on the stage

  518. answering questions

  519. about what it meant

  520. to be

  521. a shepherd

  522. of God's people.

  523. And my heart

  524. just kind of

  525. welled up within me.

  526. And,

  527. and I,

  528. I,

  529. I was emotional.

  530. Took me a while

  531. to control myself

  532. to where I could

  533. get to the question.

  534. So what I'm telling you

  535. is that,

  536. hey,

  537. emotions are not all bad

  538. and,

  539. you know,

  540. if you try to stuff

  541. them down forever,

  542. you know,

  543. sometimes it's just hard

  544. but,

  545. but the deal is this,

  546. is emotions

  547. don't bring people

  548. to faith.

  549. Emotions may

  550. prompt you

  551. to think carefully

  552. about where your heart is.

  553. That's okay.

  554. But at the end

  555. of the day,

  556. emotions are not

  557. what save people.

  558. Saving faith

  559. is not sincere belief

  560. either.

  561. Do you realize

  562. that there were

  563. millions of Jews

  564. that were put to death

  565. by Nazis

  566. who really sincerely

  567. believed what they believed?

  568. Do you follow that?

  569. They believed that.

  570. And,

  571. I don't know,

  572. some of you here

  573. are old enough

  574. to remember Jim Jones.

  575. Anybody remember Jim Jones?

  576. You heard the phrase

  577. don't drink the Kool-Aid?

  578. How many of you

  579. know that phrase?

  580. I mean,

  581. it's like don't drink

  582. the Kool-Aid.

  583. Jim Jones is the one

  584. who made it famous.

  585. Prior to that,

  586. there was this little ditty

  587. called Kool-Aid.

  588. Kool-Aid,

  589. it tastes great.

  590. Gotta have some.

  591. Can't wait.

  592. Now,

  593. that's for you

  594. who are,

  595. I mean,

  596. look at this.

  597. It's like for the rest

  598. of you,

  599. it's like over top.

  600. You know,

  601. it's like,

  602. that was my generation.

  603. You know,

  604. it's like we sang that song

  605. and we really thought

  606. Kool-Aid was good

  607. until Jim Jones came along

  608. and he made people

  609. who believed in him

  610. drink it.

  611. See,

  612. having sincere faith

  613. may lead to death.

  614. I remember growing up

  615. in India

  616. and truthfully watching,

  617. I remember going to

  618. the place,

  619. the start of the Ganges River

  620. and Ganges River

  621. is sacred,

  622. holy

  623. and it was a gathering place

  624. for all kinds of

  625. real,

  626. serious,

  627. and sincere believers

  628. in Hinduism.

  629. I remember looking

  630. at one sadhu

  631. who had sat

  632. on a bed of nails.

  633. I mean,

  634. this is the real story

  635. and he was sitting

  636. on that bed of nails,

  637. he slept on that bed of nails

  638. and he had never

  639. gotten off of that bed of nails

  640. except for

  641. basic functions

  642. and he was doing this

  643. because he sincerely believed

  644. that that was the means

  645. of salvation.

  646. I saw another sadhu

  647. who had stared at the sun

  648. with his eyes open

  649. and burned him out

  650. and he sincerely believed

  651. that his willing sacrifice

  652. of his eyesight

  653. was the means

  654. of his salvation.

  655. Sincere belief

  656. doesn't cut it.

  657. I want you to understand

  658. that apart

  659. from the reality

  660. of the truth

  661. of the scriptures,

  662. there is no hope

  663. of salvation

  664. and that's one of the reasons

  665. why we who know Christ

  666. have to be involved

  667. in letting people

  668. know the truth

  669. of their need.

  670. It is the truth

  671. that brings conviction

  672. salvation

  673. and draws a person

  674. to salvation.

  675. Let me have you see

  676. just how clearly

  677. this issue of truth

  678. is hammered at

  679. in the Bible.

  680. You're there in John

    John 4 chapter mention

  681. chapter 4,

  682. just turn ahead

  683. to John chapter 8

    John 8:32

  684. verse 32

  685. and here is Jesus

  686. again speaking

  687. on the matter of truth

  688. and here's what he says,

  689. you will know the truth

  690. and the truth

  691. will set you free.

  692. You will know the truth

  693. and the truth

  694. will set you free.

  695. Truth is absolutely

  696. essential

  697. to our salvation.

  698. Turn to another passage

  699. in relationship

  700. to this.

  701. You're there in John,

  702. keep your finger

  703. because we are coming back

  704. but I want you to go

  705. to 1 Timothy chapter 2

    1 Timothy 2:4

  706. verse 4.

  707. By the way,

  708. as I'm turning,

  709. I'm praying.

  710. Do you know

  711. why I'm praying?

  712. I'm praying,

  713. Holy Spirit,

  714. help me make the word clear.

  715. 1 Timothy chapter 2

    1 Timothy 2:4

  716. verse 4,

  717. it says this,

  718. who desires all people

  719. to be saved

  720. and to come to the knowledge

  721. of the truth.

  722. The truth.

  723. What the woman heard

  724. and what she had gone into town

  725. and communicated

  726. to the townsfolk

  727. listen carefully

  728. because this is important

  729. to understand,

  730. started with the truth

  731. that her sin

  732. was her greatest need.

  733. Let me say that slowly

  734. so you don't miss it.

  735. What she had gone into town

  736. and shared with the townsfolk

  737. is that her sin

  738. was her greatest need.

  739. Until a person

  740. comes to the place

  741. that they realize

  742. that their sin

  743. is their greatest need,

  744. they really haven't come

  745. to the place

  746. of understanding

  747. how essential

  748. faith in Christ is.

  749. This morning

  750. in my devotional reading

  751. in the book of Mark,

  752. I came to the passage

  753. where Jesus

  754. was being criticized

  755. by the Pharisees

  756. because he ate

  757. with sinners.

  758. You can think about that.

  759. Must have been at Walmart

  760. or Mendy's

  761. or McDonald's

  762. or somewhere like,

  763. you know,

  764. where all they are.

  765. And so here he is

  766. eating with sinners

  767. and the Pharisees,

  768. I can't believe

  769. you're doing that.

  770. And here's what Jesus said.

  771. He said,

  772. I didn't come to help

  773. those people

  774. who are righteous.

  775. I came to help,

  776. what?

  777. Sinners.

  778. I came to help sinners.

  779. And so the starting point

  780. of conversion

  781. is really coming to grips

  782. with the fact,

  783. man,

  784. I'm a sinner

  785. and I've got a desperate need

  786. and here's the woman.

  787. She went into town

  788. and says,

  789. you know what?

  790. Jesus told me

  791. all about myself.

  792. she'd gone to the well

  793. for water

  794. and she'd come to grips

  795. with the reality

  796. of her sinful heart

  797. that had traded sex

  798. for security.

  799. And Jesus not only

  800. convicted her

  801. of her sin

  802. but also helped her

  803. understand

  804. that he alone

  805. was the only remedy

  806. to her broken

  807. and ruined heart.

  808. And all we know

  809. about her testimony

  810. is that she went

  811. back into town

  812. and she said this,

  813. he told me

  814. all that I ever did.

  815. Isn't that an interesting

  816. statement?

  817. In essence,

  818. what she was saying

  819. was this,

  820. is that Jesus convicted me

  821. of my sin

  822. and he let me know

  823. what my problem was.

  824. So,

  825. recognize this

  826. as you think about it

  827. in your own life

  828. and ministry,

  829. true conversion

  830. involves seeing

  831. the truth of sin.

  832. Now,

  833. let me explain

  834. this a bit.

  835. Seeing the truth

  836. of sin

  837. is more than

  838. feeling bad

  839. about sin.

  840. Everybody smile

  841. when I say that.

  842. Seeing the truth

  843. of sin

  844. is more than

  845. just feeling

  846. bad about sin.

  847. I mean,

  848. feeling bad

  849. about sin

  850. is something

  851. that happens

  852. fairly often

  853. once you get

  854. caught sinning.

  855. Why is that?

  856. How many of you

  857. understand that

  858. sin always creates

  859. unintended consequences?

  860. In every case,

  861. there are some of you

  862. sitting here

  863. that are thinking

  864. to yourself,

  865. well,

  866. the sin that I'm committing

  867. doesn't have any

  868. unintended consequences.

  869. You're fooling yourself

  870. and the reason

  871. that you may not be

  872. enduring the consequences

  873. right now

  874. is because God

  875. is being incredibly

  876. patient and gentle

  877. with you

  878. but when he

  879. lets you experience

  880. consequence,

  881. he is going to

  882. take away

  883. all the arguments

  884. and you're going

  885. to come face to face

  886. with the fact

  887. that your sin

  888. is your greatest problem.

  889. It's not hard

  890. to feel bad

  891. about sin

  892. when you're

  893. suffering the consequences

  894. but that's not

  895. converting faith.

  896. Adam and Eve

  897. felt bad

  898. after they'd eaten

  899. the fruit.

  900. We know that

  901. because they tried

  902. to sew leaves together

  903. to make clothing.

  904. Have you ever

  905. tried that,

  906. by the way?

  907. I mean,

  908. you know,

  909. a little bit of vine

  910. and maybe

  911. a thorn

  912. and trying to

  913. stitch leaves together.

  914. I've actually

  915. tried that in India

  916. and it's not

  917. a good idea.

  918. The garments

  919. don't have any

  920. durability

  921. and moving in them

  922. don't go there.

  923. Okay,

  924. so,

  925. true conversion

  926. involves coming to grips

  927. with the reality

  928. of your sin.

  929. True conversion

  930. also involves

  931. seeing your utter

  932. inability

  933. to save

  934. yourself.

  935. Let me say that

  936. and have you

  937. connect with it.

  938. True conversion

  939. also involves

  940. seeing your

  941. utter inability

  942. to do anything

  943. to save yourself.

  944. More than just

  945. exposing the reality

  946. of her sin,

  947. Jesus had showed

  948. her that

  949. her hope

  950. and deliverance

  951. from the crushing

  952. burden

  953. of her shame

  954. and guilt

  955. was really

  956. in his hands

  957. and his hands

  958. alone.

  959. He was the only one

  960. who could solve

  961. the problem.

  962. I remember still

  963. years ago

  964. when I hurt

  965. my back

  966. and,

  967. you know,

  968. standard thing

  969. when men hurt

  970. their back

  971. is I'm alright,

  972. you know,

  973. I'm not taking

  974. Advil or anything

  975. like that

  976. and eventually

  977. what happened

  978. is I started

  979. having numbness

  980. that it made

  981. walking,

  982. my left leg

  983. was what was

  984. giving me trouble.

  985. Stop smiling,

  986. Hannah.

  987. Hannah is going

  988. to be graduating

  989. and leaving us

  990. which I don't think

  991. she should do

  992. but she's going

  993. out to,

  994. where is it,

  995. Montana,

  996. Idaho?

  997. I don't know.

  998. Can we take

  999. a vote on that?

  1000. We love you anyway.

  1001. Okay.

  1002. But here's the truth,

  1003. I had paralysis

  1004. that was

  1005. as the result

  1006. of my nerve

  1007. being impinged.

  1008. I went to a chiropractor

  1009. and I tried

  1010. the medicine

  1011. and I tried

  1012. all different

  1013. kinds of therapy

  1014. and nothing

  1015. was helping

  1016. and I was bound

  1017. to determine

  1018. that I wasn't

  1019. going to,

  1020. you know,

  1021. do anything

  1022. other than

  1023. just kind of

  1024. gut it out

  1025. and then I

  1026. started falling

  1027. because my leg

  1028. was atrophying

  1029. and I was

  1030. kind of,

  1031. you know what

  1032. a numb leg

  1033. works like?

  1034. It doesn't.

  1035. I fell twice

  1036. mowing

  1037. and I came in

  1038. and I said to

  1039. Judith,

  1040. we got to do

  1041. something about this.

  1042. Well,

  1043. ended up having

  1044. an MRI,

  1045. ended up having

  1046. x-rays

  1047. and all that

  1048. kind of stuff

  1049. and finally

  1050. went to a surgeon

  1051. and took the MRIs

  1052. and she looked

  1053. at this

  1054. and said,

  1055. yeah,

  1056. yeah,

  1057. yeah,

  1058. I can fix that.

  1059. A couple weeks

  1060. later,

  1061. I was actually

  1062. rolling into the

  1063. surgery and my

  1064. MRI films,

  1065. this is before

  1066. electronics were

  1067. what they are

  1068. now,

  1069. but I remember

  1070. rolling into

  1071. surgery and just

  1072. as I'm getting

  1073. ready to leave

  1074. the waiting bay,

  1075. they come in

  1076. with my x-rays

  1077. and slide them

  1078. alongside.

  1079. The doctor

  1080. walks in and

  1081. grabs those

  1082. and looks at them

  1083. again.

  1084. She had about

  1085. 47,000 to do

  1086. that day and

  1087. you know,

  1088. it's like,

  1089. which one am I

  1090. doing,

  1091. here we go,

  1092. but she

  1093. looked at

  1094. those films

  1095. and she

  1096. knew what

  1097. needed to be

  1098. done and

  1099. I had been

  1100. fully persuaded

  1101. by that

  1102. recurring pain,

  1103. incredible as

  1104. it was,

  1105. and by falling

  1106. that I

  1107. couldn't solve

  1108. my problem

  1109. by myself

  1110. and I was

  1111. willing to

  1112. submit to a

  1113. good surgeon.

  1114. Until you

  1115. come to grips

  1116. with the reality

  1117. of sin in

  1118. your heart,

  1119. you will not

  1120. come to

  1121. the good

  1122. physician.

  1123. And so as

  1124. you look at

  1125. the passage

  1126. going back

  1127. there to

  1128. John chapter

    John 4 chapter mention

  1129. 4,

  1130. you find there

  1131. that she

  1132. goes into

  1133. town,

  1134. she tells

  1135. them the

  1136. truth about

  1137. who Jesus

  1138. was,

  1139. and what

  1140. they do

  1141. then is

  1142. they as

  1143. well come

  1144. to grips

  1145. with their

  1146. condition and

  1147. recognize their

  1148. desperate need.

  1149. And I like

  1150. what the

  1151. outcome of

  1152. this process

  1153. is.

  1154. Number one,

  1155. the Spirit

  1156. convicts us

  1157. that we are

  1158. sinners and

  1159. we can't

  1160. save ourselves.

  1161. And furthermore,

  1162. number two,

  1163. the Spirit

  1164. comes and

  1165. helps us

  1166. understand that

  1167. Jesus is the

  1168. Savior.

  1169. Look at

  1170. verse 42.

  1171. We're going

  1172. to step

  1173. ahead for a

  1174. second.

  1175. It says there,

  1176. they said to

  1177. the woman,

  1178. it's no longer

  1179. because of what

  1180. you said that

  1181. we believe for

  1182. we've heard for

  1183. ourselves and

  1184. we know that

  1185. this indeed is

  1186. the Savior of

  1187. the world.

  1188. The Spirit

  1189. of God brings

  1190. us to the

  1191. point that we

  1192. understand that

  1193. our only hope

  1194. is in Christ

  1195. as our Savior.

  1196. Savior.

  1197. So recognize

  1198. these two

  1199. pieces.

  1200. Number one,

  1201. saving faith

  1202. convinces us

  1203. of the reality

  1204. of our sin.

  1205. It's based on

  1206. truth and

  1207. drives home the

  1208. point that we're

  1209. in a mess.

  1210. Number two,

  1211. saving faith is

  1212. believing the

  1213. truth about

  1214. Jesus.

  1215. You look at

  1216. verse 39,

  1217. she went into

  1218. town, she told

  1219. them the truth

  1220. about Jesus,

  1221. and in verse

  1222. 40, out they

  1223. come.

  1224. Many of them,

  1225. they wanted to

  1226. hear who Jesus

  1227. was, and as they

  1228. listened to him,

  1229. they said,

  1230. would you stay

  1231. here longer

  1232. and keep

  1233. ministering to

  1234. us?

  1235. And he did,

  1236. he stayed two

  1237. days.

  1238. Now everyone

  1239. that had believed

  1240. at that moment,

  1241. and we read that

  1242. a number of them

  1243. had believed

  1244. earlier as a

  1245. result of the

  1246. woman's testimony,

  1247. they were part of

  1248. this throng that

  1249. gathered, and they

  1250. perhaps just listened

  1251. further as Jesus

  1252. was teaching, and

  1253. those who did not

  1254. believe came along,

1255. and as a result of

  1256. listening to what

  1257. Jesus had to say,

  1258. they came to grips

  1259. with their own sin.

  1260. Look at verse 41.

  1261. And many more

  1262. believed because of

  1263. his word, because of

  1264. his word.

  1265. Now what word would

  1266. Jesus bring that

  1267. would bring salvation

  1268. to individuals'

  1269. hearts?

  1270. Number one, and I

  1271. want you to have

  1272. this pictured firmly

  1273. in your heart and

  1274. understand it clearly,

  1275. number one, saving

  1276. faith means believing

  1277. that man cannot save

  1278. himself.

  1279. Think with me.

  1280. Common question.

  1281. I don't have any

  1282. hesitation asking an

  1283. individual.

1284. Is so, when you die,

  1285. where are you going

  1286. to spend eternity?

  1287. It's a fair question.

  1288. I mean, after all,

  1289. what it says in

  1290. Hebrews chapter 9 is

    Hebrews 9 chapter mention

  1291. this, it says, it's

  1292. appointed unto man

  1293. once to die, and

  1294. after that, what?

  1295. The day is coming

  1296. when I'm going to

  1297. give an account, and

  1298. you're going to give

  1299. an account to Christ.

  1300. Christ.

  1301. And so, where are

  1302. you going?

  1303. I get a chuckle when

1304. I'm on an elevator, and

  1305. we're going up or

  1306. down.

  1307. It doesn't make any

  1308. difference, but when I

1309. get ready to punch the

  1310. buttons, one of the

1311. things I say is, my

  1312. last trip is up.

  1313. You know, it's like,

  1314. I'm a little weird, but

1315. you know, it's like, my

  1316. last trip is up.

  1317. Okay?

  1318. And it is.

1319. Jesus makes it clear in

  1320. the scriptures, man

  1321. cannot save himself.

1322. And until you come to

  1323. that point that you

  1324. recognize the moral

  1325. bankruptcy of your

  1326. heart and the absolute

  1327. desperate condition of

1328. your soul, you are not

1329. there and ready to hear

  1330. the sweetness of the

  1331. gospel.

  1332. Number two, saving

  1333. faith believes that only

1334. God can save men from

  1335. their sin.

  1336. sin.

1337. Only God can save men

  1338. from their sin.

1339. I want you to get that

  1340. clearly fixed in your

  1341. mind because there's a

  1342. lot of people running

  1343. around today that when

1344. you ask them, why are

  1345. you going to heaven,

  1346. their standard answers,

  1347. I've been a pretty good

  1348. person.

1349. Now, I'm glad to hear

  1350. that.

  1351. I mean, I wish there

  1352. were more people that

  1353. were pretty good.

1354. But the truth of the

  1355. matter is, the Bible

1356. says, not by works of

  1357. righteousness.

  1358. There's nothing that

1359. you and I can do that

  1360. can bring redemption or

  1361. salvation to us.

  1362. Why is that?

  1363. Why is that?

  1364. We sang a very

  1365. interesting song this

  1366. morning.

  1367. It said, all my

  1368. righteousness is as

  1369. what?

  1370. Filthy is the

  1371. discreet King James

  1372. translation of a much

  1373. more blunt Hebrew word.

  1374. word.

1375. The truth of the matter

  1376. is, our best efforts

  1377. actually have a little

  1378. tincture, a little

  1379. flavoring of self-

  1380. adulation and

  1381. appreciation.

  1382. Aren't you glad, God,

  1383. I'm as nice as I am?

  1384. And he says, yuck.

  1385. Man cannot save himself,

1386. only God can do that.

  1387. And finally, saving faith

  1388. believes that God sent

1389. his son to be our

  1390. savior.

  1391. Do you know that?

  1392. Do you know that?

  1393. You're a sinner.

  1394. I'm a sinner.

  1395. sinner.

  1396. I have never gotten

  1397. over.

  1398. I have never gotten

  1399. over.

  1400. The reality of the

  1401. convicting power of

1402. Jesus that led me to

  1403. discover just the

  1404. darkness of my heart.

  1405. And brought me to

  1406. realize that the only

  1407. person who could do

  1408. anything about me was

  1409. Jesus.

1410. And what he did for me

1411. was Jesus died on the

  1412. cross to pay the

  1413. penalty for my sins.

  1414. Oh.

1415. We sang that song this

  1416. morning, what can wash

  1417. away my, what?

  1418. Sin.

1419. What can take away the

  1420. burden?

  1421. The darkness.

  1422. The depression.

  1423. The hopelessness.

  1424. The blackness of your

  1425. soul.

  1426. There is no remedy

  1427. but the blood of

  1428. Christ.

  1429. And the reason that

  1430. there is remedy is

  1431. Jesus stepped up and

  1432. took your place

  1433. and died your death.

  1434. He paid the penalty

  1435. for your sins.

  1436. And saving faith

  1437. is a

  1438. clear

  1439. truthful

  1440. grasp

  1441. of bad news.

  1442. I'm a hopeless

  1443. mess

  1444. deserving God's

  1445. judgment.

  1446. And the good news

  1447. God sent his son

  1448. to die

  1449. for me.

  1450. And there's

  1451. nothing else

  1452. that counts

  1453. but that.

  1454. we're going to do

  1455. something a little

  1456. different this

  1457. morning.

  1458. John is going to

  1459. lead us in two

  1460. songs.

  1461. By the way,

  1462. happy people that

  1463. know Jesus do what

  1464. when they sing?

  1465. I always smile,

  1466. they blow it out.

  1467. Okay?

  1468. That's what they do.

  1469. They don't just kind

  1470. of sit there.

1471. And I'm not going to

  1472. be watching John,

1473. but you give me a

  1474. grade, will you?

1475. I am hoping that all

1476. of you are not going

  1477. to be sitting there

  1478. like this.

  1479. Okay,

  1480. John's going to come

  1481. lead us.

  1482. First song,

  1483. you sing
