  1. I want you to turn your Bibles this morning to John chapter 4, verse 43 through 54.

    John 4:43–54

  2. !

  3. Let's begin with prayer.

  4. Our Father God, this morning as we take up your word together as a body of believers,

  5. those who have been redeemed, whose sins have been forgiven because of the Lord Jesus Christ

  6. and his sacrifice on the cross, those who have come by faith, having first of all been

  7. convicted of the darkness and hopelessness of our sinful state, and recognizing that there

  8. is nothing we could have ever done to earn your grace and your forgiveness.

  9. We who have been drawn by your grace to become believers in the Lord Jesus Christ gather this

  10. morning to worship you and to delight in the truth that you've given to us.

  11. And we pray for the work of the Holy Spirit this morning that I would preach with his enabling,

  12. that your people would hear with ears that are tuned by your Spirit,

  13. and that those who sit in our fellowship this morning that have never come to faith in Christ,

  14. some who are here and deceived by the enemy to believe that merely growing up in a Christian

  15. home was adequate, some who may even at one point or another have made steps that they have been led to believe

  16. are sufficient.

  17. Father, those who are here that do not know Christ, we pray that your Spirit would convict them

  18. and draw them to saving faith.

  19. Father, those who are here that do not know Christ, we pray that your Spirit would be

  20. and we ask that Jesus, who we delight in as our Savior, and the Holy Spirit delights in lifting up,

  21. would be the one that is seen most clearly.

  22. And we ask this together in Jesus' name.

  23. We are in John chapter 4, and at the very end of this chapter, we come to a very interesting,

    John 4 chapter mention

  24. little picture that is important for you to understand.

  25. Let me help you see the picture by stepping back, if you would, for a moment to John chapter 1.

    John 1 chapter mention

  26. So turn back in your Bible to John chapter 1, verse 10 and 11.

    John 1:10

  27. In 10 it says,

  28. He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, yet the world did not know Him.

  29. Now stop and recognize that this person that John is speaking about,

  30. in John chapter 1, verse 1 says,

    John 1:1

  31. He was in the beginning.

  32. He was the Word.

  33. He is the one who not only was at the beginning, but all things were made by Him,

  34. and there is not anything that has been created that was not made by Him.

  35. And yet this is the one that, as it says in verse 10,

  36. the world has not identified and recognized.

  37. Verse 11,

  38. He came into His own.

  39. Speaking about the nation, the Jewish nation, it says,

  40. He came into His own, and His own people did not receive Him.

  41. And so, from the very beginning,

  42. and I want you to understand that in some senses,

  43. the early part of John is kind of an overview.

  44. It's a little bit like going to the beginning of a book,

  45. and you turn to the index,

  46. and that little part that introduction explains,

  47. this is what the chapters are,

  48. and the chapter headers give you more or less an idea of what's going to follow.

  49. John chapter 1 tells us,

    John 1 chapter mention

  50. this is how the book is going to play out.

  51. The underlying theme that John the Apostle wants us to have fixed in our heart

  52. is that his book is written to bring us to the spot of recognizing

  53. that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God,

  54. and that believing in Him we might have everlasting life.

  55. With that kind of as that overarching theme,

  56. you then find John step in to a couple early little incidents with Jesus,

  57. and one is the changing of water into wine,

  58. not something that was recognized by a great many people.

  59. It was not something that kind of a high on the food chain in terms of public impact.

  60. It was his first miracle.

  61. Following that, he walks into Jerusalem,

  62. and he cleanses the temple.

  63. If he wondered about something impact,

  64. that was certainly high impact.

  65. He took care of the mess and the deceit

  66. and the wickedness that was going on in the very center

  67. of Israel, the temple itself.

  68. And you would think that, well, that is a starting point.

  69. Everything kind of would go forward from there,

  70. and you would just see Jesus in his ministry

  71. and his effect kind of just climbing up the ladder

  72. one thing after another, leading to tremendous success.

  73. However, if you come to the end of chapter 2,

  74. and I want you to just turn there just for a moment,

  75. it says this, that now when he was in Jerusalem,

  76. this is verse 23,

  77. at the Passover feast,

  78. many believed in his name when they saw the signs that he was doing.

  79. They were impressed by what they saw.

  80. In fact, they liked some of those things.

  81. I mean, healing.

  82. How would you like to be able to receive healing

  83. without having to go to a doctor,

  84. just immediately taken care of,

  85. and the problems disappear?

  86. He did things that people loved.

  87. And yet, as we read there, it says in verse 24,

  88. Jesus, on his part,

  89. did not entrust himself to them because he knew all people

  90. and needed no one to bear witness about man,

  91. for he himself knew what was in man.

  92. He knew that the attitudes of those that he was ministering to

  93. was really, hey, I'm interested in the miracle,

  94. and I'm interested in the good things you're doing for me,

  95. but I really am not interested in you stepping into my life

  96. and taking over and being in control.

  97. I like some of the things you do.

  98. I don't want you to be in charge.

  99. And so we work our way through,

  100. and we then come to chapter 3 and 4

  101. that give us this lengthy picture

  102. of several different evangelistic incidents

  103. and the outcome of those.

  104. And remember, why did Jesus come into the world?

  105. He came into the world, as it says in John chapter 1.

    John 1 chapter mention

  106. He came to be the Lamb of God.

  107. And we know also from both Luke and other places,

  108. it says he came into the world to save sinners.

  109. And so in chapter 3, we have Nicodemus,

  110. a ruler who came to Jesus by night and asked some questions,

  111. and it ended up being this wonderful evangelistic opportunity.

  112. We don't know from this part of the passage at this point

  113. whether or not Nicodemus came to be a believer or not.

  114. There's no indication of it.

  115. All we know is he asked some questions.

  116. He really didn't get it.

  117. Chapter 4, on the other hand,

  118. is a very interesting picture of Jesus as he is leaving Jerusalem

  119. and going back to his hometown area.

  120. He, as he is making this journey,

  121. stops at a well in Sychar in Samaria,

  122. and there he ends up having a lengthy conversation

  123. with a woman who was a known, wicked, ungodly sinner.

  124. And what's the outcome of that conversation?

  125. She comes to faith.

  126. And not only does she come to faith,

  127. but immediately after coming to faith,

  128. she runs into town and tells all those who would listen to her about Jesus,

  129. is not this the Messiah?

  130. And a lot of people there in Sychar believed in Jesus as a result,

  131. and they came to see Jesus as well.

  132. Additional people then flocked to meet Jesus where he was at the well,

  133. and the outcome of all of that is that it seems that there is a rolling revival taking place,

  134. and it's just beginning to kind of mushroom out and affect everybody,

  135. all these believers in Samaria.

  136. It's great news.

  137. And you would think that from that little start,

  138. we're on the roll,

  139. and everybody's going to believe in Jesus,

  140. and the story's going to end up happily ever after.

  141. Wouldn't that be nice?

  142. That's not how it works.

  143. And John gives us a clear and accurate picture of how the ministry of Christ would play out in the days to follow.

  144. And that's what we have in these verses,

  145. picking up there in verse 43.

  146. Let me read it to you and frame it,

  147. and then we'll move through and see a couple different points that are important.

  148. After the two days,

  149. he departed for Galilee.

  150. For Jesus himself had testified that a prophet has no honor in his hometown.

  151. So as we look at this passage,

  152. what we find John the Apostle doing is wanting us to understand something about evangelism.

  153. Is that important for us as believers?

  154. We've come to know Christ.

  155. We have the blessing of having confidence in where our eternal destiny is.

  156. We have joy.

  157. I love the songs that we've sung this morning about the fact that when we know Christ,

  158. there is joy and peace in our hearts.

  159. And that's entirely true.

  160. But not only do we have that blessing of knowing Christ as our Savior,

  161. but we also have the responsibility of being witnesses to his grace.

  162. Isn't that right?

  163. I mean, the reason I am here and not up there

  164. is for that principal purpose of sharing with other people the sweetness of the gospel

  165. and the hope that they have of knowing Christ as their personal Savior.

  166. And so you would think,

  167. man, that's what it's all about.

  168. And I would like to see how that's going to play out.

  169. John says,

  170. whoa, stop just for a minute.

  171. Understand,

  172. it's not always going to go the way you'd like.

  173. And that's what we're looking at here

  174. in verse 43,

  175. 44,

  176. and 45.

  177. We find that there were people that were all about his miracles,

  178. but rejected his message.

  179. There in 43,

  180. it says he left.

  181. He was going back to Galilee.

  182. That's where his hometown was.

  183. And in making this journey back,

  184. we are given this little picture there in 44 of what we could expect would take place.

  185. He'd spent two days in Samaria.

  186. And Samaria had ended up being very,

  187. very responsible to the gospel ministry of Christ.

  188. Many people had come to believe in him.

  189. And yet we are reminded here that as he is headed back for the area in which he grew up,

  190. we understand that things weren't going to go the way they had gone in Samaria.

  191. And here we're given this little reminder.

  192. Don't always expect everything in relationship to your ministry to other people

  193. to be as productive and as easy and as wonderful as what took place at the well with the woman.

  194. I think it's important for us to keep in mind

  195. that this attitude of disbelief was not just something of Galilee

  196. because earlier when he was in Judea, in Jerusalem actually,

  197. and he had been ministering there,

  198. there as well he had not been really well received.

  199. We saw that back in chapter 2.

  200. As we noticed there, it says that,

  201. hey, people believed.

  202. They liked the miracles that they saw.

  203. But the truth of the matter is they really did not come to faith in Christ.

  204. They liked the external fruit.

  205. They liked the physical blessings.

  206. But they really didn't have faith.

  207. And they were not all about having him expose their sins

  208. and bring the darkness of their heart to light.

  209. How do we know that?

  210. Look for a moment, just for a turn back in your Bible, if you will,

  211. go to John chapter 3 and look at verse 19, 20, and 21.

    John 3 chapter mention

  212. I think it's important for us to track this.

  213. So turn back in your Bible.

  214. We're dealing with the truth that Jesus in his ministry,

  215. received by some but rejected by most.

  216. And this is the judgment.

  217. The light has come into the world,

  218. and people love the darkness rather than the light,

  219. because their works were evil.

  220. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light,

  221. and does not come to the light,

  222. lest his works should be exposed.

  223. For whoever does what is true comes to the light,

  224. so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out by God.

  225. And so as Jesus is ministering first in Jerusalem and not well received,

  226. then for a moment, very favorably, in Samaria,

  227. now he's going back to Galilee, his hometown,

  228. and he makes this interesting little statement.

  229. John writes this.

  230. He says, listen, understand this,

  231. that a prophet is not going to be received in his own hometown.

  232. Now, there's a little discourse or a little discussion

  233. whether or not that statement is,

  234. a prophet is not received in his own hometown or his own home country.

  235. Both could be the way it is, and it was true.

  236. He was not received in his hometown,

  237. and he was not received as a general principle in all of Israel.

  238. And so as you stop and ask yourself the question,

  239. why would that be?

  240. Why would it be that Jesus,

  241. the one who came to be the Savior of the world,

  242. and came in particular, first of all, to the Jewish nation,

  243. would not be received?

  244. What would lead a person to be indifferent to their spiritual need?

  245. I want you to think about that,

  246. because all of us today are involved in ministry.

  247. I'm talking to you who know Christ.

  248. All of us are involved in working with individuals,

  249. sharing, praying for them,

  250. with an interest in seeing them come to faith.

  251. What is it that makes them kind of tone deaf

  252. to their spiritual need?

  253. Well, I want you to recognize a couple things

  254. in relationship to this.

  255. One is this.

  256. Sin is far more blinding and deadening than we might think.

  257. Sin is far more blinding and deadening than we might think.

  258. I want you to turn in your Bible back to or forward.

  259. You're in John, so just go to Romans 1, verse 21.

    Romans 1:21

  260. How does sin affect the sinner?

  261. Romans 1, verse 21.

    Romans 1:21

  262. It says,

  263. Although they knew God,

  264. they did not honor Him as God.

  265. Or give thanks to Him,

  266. but they became futile in their thinking,

  267. and their foolish hearts were darkened.

  268. I want you to think about that for a moment with me.

  269. It says here,

  270. they became futile in their thinking.

  271. How many of you have ever tried to do a math equation,

  272. and you had some of the starting principles wrong?

  273. You copied them wrong,

  274. or you just didn't get your hands around the starting principles.

  275. Anybody else besides me

  276. have had that miserable experience?

  277. And you keep on doing the problem,

  278. and it just keeps on not working out.

  279. The lack was,

  280. you didn't understand the core issue.

  281. Here's what it says.

  282. They became futile.

  283. They didn't get it.

  284. And as a result of refusing the truth of who God is,

  285. the outcome was that their thinking

  286. became progressively darker and darker.

  287. And do you think they recognized,

  288. Man, I am descending into the abyss.

  289. My thinking is getting worse and worse.

  290. How many of you bump into people every day that say,

  291. I am becoming a more wicked person?

  292. Anybody?

  293. The truth of the matter is,

  294. is every time,

  295. listen up,

  296. everybody say,

  297. they're following me here.

  298. Every time we say no to what the Spirit of God convicts us of,

  299. what's the outcome of that?

  300. If we're a child of God,

  301. He won't let us get away,

  302. but what does it do?

  303. It brings firmer dealings.

  304. How many of you understand that?

  305. That's for the believer.

  306. For the unbeliever,

  307. it just progressively dampens down.

  308. The sensibility and sensitivity we have

  309. to what God is in the process of teaching us.

  310. And so here in Romans chapter 1,

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  311. it says,

  312. their thinking became futile,

  313. and their foolish hearts were darkened.

  314. When we squelch,

  315. the promptings of our conscience,

  316. or His Holy Spirit,

  317. things just get darker and darker in your heart.

  318. And so when we think back to John chapter 4,

    John 4 chapter mention

  319. and we recognize the general reception that Jesus received,

  320. you understand that as people were saying no,

  321. no thank you,

  322. I'm not interested,

  323. I don't want you messing with me,

  324. I don't want you interfering with my life,

  325. and my own little idolatries.

  326. Every time the nation of Israel,

  327. and people all around said no to Jesus,

  328. the consequences were that they were darkening their spirit.

  329. And Jesus here understood what was going on.

  330. So in the first part of our lesson this morning,

  331. one of the things that I want you to recognize

  332. is that you can sit under the teaching of the Word of God,

  333. you can hear what God is saying,

  334. and you can be part of this fellowship,

  335. and yet not necessarily have come to faith

  336. just because you have quieted,

  337. you've squelched the ministry of the Spirit

  338. and the convicting work of God in your life,

  339. and it's a dangerous thing.

  340. It's a dangerous thing.

  341. Well, you go back there,

  342. and it says,

  343. so when He came to Galilee,

  344. the Galileans welcomed Him,

  345. having seen all that He had done in Jerusalem at the feast,

  346. for they too had gone to the feast.

  347. And we find that here,

  348. and when He got back to the area that He'd grown up in,

  349. everybody was glad to see Him,

  350. but why were they glad to see Him?

  351. Do you think they were saying,

  352. hey, listen, I have this nasty sin problem,

  353. and I really want you to do something

  354. about the hard, dark heart that I have?

  355. Most of the time,

  356. people are willing to recognize

  357. that there are problems in their lives,

  358. but usually they think the problems are,

  359. guess what?

  360. Everybody else.

  361. Jesus comes along and says,

  362. hey, listen, the problem you have is sin in your heart,

  363. and I'm here to help you with it.

  364. No, thank you.

  365. I don't want you to deal with that.

  366. They wanted the miracles.

  367. They wanted His attention,

  368. but they were not willing to allow Him

  369. to touch the reality of the root of the problem,

  370. which is the darkness of their own heart.

  371. And so when we find this little passage here,

  372. verse 43 through 45,

  373. it gives us a picture that I think is important

  374. for us to understand.

  375. Hey, listen,

  376. not every time that you are engaged in ministry

  377. to other people will the light bulb go on,

  378. and will they immediately recognize

  379. what God is doing and be drawn to the cross.

  380. And for some of you who are sitting here this morning

  381. who have loved ones that you care for

  382. and you are praying for,

  383. let me encourage you to know

  384. that your ministry does not change

  385. just because they don't receive it at the moment.

  386. Christ knows what it's like to be rejected.

  387. He knows what it's like to pour His heart

  388. into individuals and have them turn their back.

  389. That didn't change His heart

  390. towards those people who rejected Him.

  391. He persisted in His affection and His love,

  392. and we in Christ's stead are to do the same.

  393. It's important.

  394. Let's come to the second part of the message this morning

  395. and recognize another picture of conversion.

  396. Verse 46 on to 54

  397. is a little interesting story

  398. that is radically different from the Samaritan woman.

  399. How did the story go with the Samaritan woman?

  400. Remember, Jesus sits down at the well,

  401. a woman comes to visit,

  402. he asks about water,

  403. and from there on in,

  404. the whole conversation goes over to this issue

  405. of this woman coming to faith,

  406. and then she scampers back into town,

  407. and she says,

  408. hey, you've got to come meet this guy,

  409. and a lot of other people believe in Jesus as well.

  410. Now, we have a completely different story.

  411. And I want you to recognize

  412. that one of the benefits

  413. of this kind of completely different conversion picture

  414. is that it reminds us

  415. that the Holy Spirit's work

  416. in drawing people to the cross

  417. is quite varied,

  418. and we've got to be careful

  419. that we don't get in a little box

  420. and say, well, this is the way it has to be.

  421. You have to come to Christ

  422. when you're four years old,

  423. and your mother has to be the one

  424. who is doing devotions in your home

  425. and sharing the gospel,

  426. and you have to pray in your bedroom.

  427. Okay?

  428. Or you have to have been

  429. at a Billy Graham crusade.

  430. Some of you have come to faith at a crusade.

  431. Or you have to be at a youth group event.

  432. Or you have to come down front.

  433. I will never forget

  434. sharing the gospel with an individual

  435. as he was rolling in for surgery.

  436. He had already heard

  437. that he had cancer in his bowel,

  438. and he was a hard-headed

  439. German plant manager,

  440. and strangely enough,

  441. he said, his wife said,

  442. you need to come and pray for this guy,

  443. and I did.

  444. I'm walking down the hall

  445. towards the surgery,

  446. and guess what I'm sharing with him?

  447. I'm sharing the gospel with him,

  448. and he started crying,

  449. and he trusted Christ on the gurney.

  450. Died six months later.

  451. That's okay.

  452. I'll see him in heaven.

  453. I've seen people walk down the front,

  454. and I remember someone saying to me,

  455. I need Jesus.

  456. Happens all different kinds of ways.

  457. And we need to be reminded

  458. of the diversity of ways

  459. in which the Spirit of God works.

  460. And that's what we see in this case.

  461. We see another picture of conversion.

  462. So let's kind of recognize

  463. as we work our way through this story

  464. of the different little signals

  465. that give us indications

  466. of the Spirit working

  467. in this person's life.

  468. We have the story there.

  469. Here, an official comes to Jesus,

  470. and his son was sick,

  471. not just sick with the flu,

  472. not just sick with a little bit

  473. of a head cold,

  474. but he was dying.

  475. And so the man had made the journey

  476. from where he lived

  477. up to where Jesus was.

  478. And the journey from Capernaum

  479. to Cana was about 16 miles,

  480. which would translate

  481. into five or so hours.

  482. And so I'm going to just,

  483. think with me here

  484. just for a minute,

  485. how many of you here

  486. walked five miles,

  487. five hours one way

  488. to visit anybody lately?

  489. Anybody do that?

  490. Five hours?

  491. I mean, hey, we're stretching it

  492. when we drive five hours

  493. to visit somebody.

  494. You know, it's like family.

  495. And so here is a father

  496. who is willing to walk

  497. five hours one way

  498. to talk to Jesus.

  499. And when he shows up there,

  500. we find there,

  501. when this man heard

  502. that Jesus had come

  503. from Judea to Galilee,

  504. he went up to ask

  505. and he came and says,

  506. hey, listen,

  507. you've got to do something

  508. for my son.

  509. He's at the point of death.

  510. So Jesus said to him,

  511. unless you see signs

  512. and wonders,

  513. you will not believe.

  514. Well, recognize,

  515. first of all,

  516. that the Spirit

  517. is creative

  518. in drawing people to faith

  519. through challenges

  520. and heartache.

  521. Do you understand that?

  522. There are some of you

  523. sitting here this morning

  524. that really are going

  525. through some very difficult

  526. moments in your life.

  527. It seems like the pieces

  528. are not just aligned properly.

  529. And I want to challenge you

  530. to think,

  531. what is God at work

  532. doing in your life?

  533. If you're here

  534. and you do not know Christ,

  535. I want to encourage you

  536. to recognize

  537. that he may well be

  538. using those heartaches

  539. and those challenges,

  540. those difficulties,

  541. and those burdens

  542. to bring you to the point

  543. of recognizing

  544. you can't solve

  545. these problems by yourself.

  546. And that's what happened

  547. with this man.

  548. I have no doubt

  549. that before he decided

  550. that it was reasonable

  551. to take a five-hour hike

  552. to see someone

  553. that he'd never seen before,

  554. that he probably had asked

  555. every other resident medical expert

  556. in the little town

  557. that he was living in,

  558. can you do something

  559. for my son?

  560. No.

  561. No.

  562. No.

  563. He's dying.

  564. Well,

  565. I think it's reasonable

  566. for me to take

  567. a five-hour walk

  568. so I can ask Jesus

  569. if he'll do something for him.

  570. So I want you

  571. to understand this morning,

  572. if you're here

  573. and the weight of life

  574. is pressing down on you,

  575. it may be that

  576. the Spirit of God

  577. is using those heartaches

  578. to draw you

  579. to realize

  580. that there is something

  581. in your soul

  582. that only Jesus

  583. can care for.

  584. I want you to recognize

  585. something else,

  586. that as you look at this,

  587. you find out that

  588. the heartache

  589. and challenge

  590. that this man

  591. was facing

  592. was something

  593. that at least

  594. prompted him

  595. to realize

  596. that Jesus

  597. could be the answer.

  598. Now,

  599. if you go back

  600. just for a moment,

  601. back to John chapter 2,

    John 2 chapter mention

  602. and we all referred to it,

  603. but I want you

  604. to look at it again.

  605. In John chapter 2,

    John 2:23

  606. verse 23,

  607. it says that

  608. many believed

  609. in his name.

  610. Now,

  611. does that mean

  612. that in this case

  613. necessarily they were saved?

  614. No,

  615. not at all.

  616. And the reason we know that

  617. is because of what we read

  618. in verse 24 and 25.

  619. They believed in the power

  620. that Jesus was manifesting.

  621. They saw the evidence

  622. of something supernatural

  623. taking place,

  624. but their belief

  625. was not a belief

  626. in Christ

  627. as their personal Savior.

  628. And so,

  629. again,

  630. in 3.2,

  631. it says the man

  632. came to Jesus

  633. talking about Nicodemus.

  634. He said,

  635. Rabbi,

  636. we know you're a teacher

  637. come from God.

  638. How do we know that?

  639. Because no one

  640. could do the signs

  641. that you're doing

  642. unless God was helping him.

  643. See,

  644. people saw

  645. the power

  646. of what Christ

  647. was doing.

  648. And this man

  649. had heard the stories

  650. and he recognized

  651. that Christ

  652. was someone

  653. that could do

  654. something unusual

  655. and as a result

  656. of that,

  657. he wanted to see

  658. Jesus face to face.

  659. Now,

  660. let me carry this over

  661. into your life

  662. just for a moment.

  663. Do you realize

  664. that you and I

  665. are living examples

  666. of the miraculous

  667. power of Christ?

  668. Do you realize?

  669. Say that with me.

  670. I do understand that.

  671. When I look in the...

  672. Stop.

  673. Everybody look.

  674. Hello.

  675. Okay.

  676. If you are here

  677. and you are a child

  678. of Christ,

  679. you are a living

  680. example

  681. of the supernatural

  682. power of Christ

  683. to do something

  684. that is beyond

  685. human ability

  686. and reason.

  687. Am I right or wrong?

  688. Hmm?

  689. Yes or no?

  690. If any man

  691. be in Christ Jesus,

  692. he is a...

  693. I'm something.

  694. That word creation

  695. there is a word

  696. that is used

  697. in relationship

  698. to the creation

  699. of the world.

  700. Something out of nothing.

  701. Spectacular.

  702. Now, when I look

  703. at myself in the mirror

  704. and probably when you

  705. look at yourself

  706. in the mirror,

  707. you say, really?

  708. But when the Spirit

  709. of God is at work

  710. and we are growing

  711. in grace,

  712. do you know

  713. that other people

  714. see what is taking place

  715. and they're curious

  716. about that

  717. and then in the bankruptcy

  718. of their soul

  719. and the brokenness

  720. of their moment,

  721. they say,

  722. well,

  723. I don't know.

  724. The mess I'm in,

  725. I'd at least like

  726. to find out

  727. what He knows

  728. and how He's making it.

  729. You see,

  730. God uses heartache

  731. and challenges

  732. to draw people

  733. around you

  734. to wonder about

  735. the faith

  736. and the life

  737. that you live.

  738. And that's part

  739. of what He does

  740. in evangelism.

  741. Well, I want you

  742. to recognize

  743. another thing

  744. that plays out here.

  745. We find that

  746. the Holy Spirit

  747. used Christ's rebuke

  748. of a limited view

  749. of His power.

  750. The man comes

  751. and says,

  752. hey,

  753. I need you

  754. to do something

  755. for my son.

  756. He's five hours

  757. down the road.

  758. You need to come

  759. down there.

  760. You need to do

  761. something for him.

  762. And Jesus says here,

  763. verse 48,

  764. unless you see signs

  765. and wonders,

  766. you will not believe.

  767. Bang!

  768. How's that

  769. for a favorable response

  770. when you walk

  771. five hours

  772. to talk to Jesus?

  773. What do you think?

  774. That's pretty stunning,

  775. isn't it?

  776. What Jesus was rebuking

  777. was the attitude

  778. that many people

  779. can have

  780. of limiting

  781. the power of God

  782. to do what really

  783. needs to be done.

  784. Hey, you know,

  785. if you would do it

  786. my way,

  787. it may pull off.

  788. I read Tom Wolfe's

  789. interesting blog.

  790. How many of you

  791. know Tom Wolfe,

  792. our missionary

  793. in South Africa?

  794. He had a winsome blog.

  795. By the way,

  796. if you're not reading

  797. Tom Wolfe's blog,

  798. you should.

  799. It is the best

  800. missionary blog

  801. I know of.

  802. Now, I'm not

  803. a mega blogger reader,

  804. but that's a good one.

  805. Okay?

  806. And he was talking

  807. about the devastation

  808. of the prosperity

  809. gospel in Africa.

  810. Just Google something.

  811. I want you to look up

  812. the ten richest pastors

  813. in the world.

  814. Do that.

  815. Do that.

  816. The largest percentage

  817. of them are in Africa.

  818. That's stunning.

  819. A land of abject poverty

  820. as a general rule.

  821. I shouldn't say abject,

  822. but of challenging

  823. economic status,

  824. and yet,

  825. the idea of

  826. name it, claim it,

  827. God is there

  828. to do it your way,

  829. and by the way,

  830. if you need a Lexus,

  831. just ask and put something

  832. in the offering plate

  833. to help it along.

  834. You see,

  835. this idea that God's

  836. kind of a power

  837. that we can manipulate

  838. for our own purposes

  839. according to our own plan,

  840. Jesus says,

  841. hey, don't go there.

  842. I'm not about doing it

  843. your way.

  844. I want you to recognize

  845. that the Spirit

  846. also uses persistence.

  847. I love what we read next.

  848. Verse 49,

  849. put your finger on it,

  850. the official said to him,

  851. sir, come down

  852. before my child dies.

  853. How's that for blunt?

  854. Huh?

  855. The man blew right past

  856. Christ's rebuke

  857. and was unrelenting

  858. with his brokenhearted plea.

  859. You come down

  860. before my child dies.

  861. One of the things

  862. that characterizes

  863. the work of the Spirit

  864. as that He prompts persistence.

  865. He keeps on pressing.

  866. He keeps on bearing in.

  867. He keeps on convicting

  868. till we come to that point

  869. where we recognize

  870. that unless Jesus does something,

  871. there's nothing

  872. that can be done.

  873. And I love that.

  874. I want you to mark

  875. this man's persistence

  876. as something

  877. that was not credited

  878. to a character trait.

  879. Now, I want you to think

  880. about that for a moment.

  881. Some people are easily discouraged.

  882. Others just bear in.

  883. I would say that

  884. this man's persistence

  885. was ultimately

  886. the work of grace

  887. in calling out to Jesus

  888. and saying,

  889. unless you do something,

  890. it's going to be

  891. a desperate situation.

  892. And how did Jesus respond?

  893. Come to the last little bit.

  894. I want you to recognize

  895. the Spirit used Christ's words.

  896. Here we have the man say,

  897. you better come down

  898. before my child dies.

  899. Verse 50,

  900. Jesus said,

  901. go,

  902. your son will live.

  903. The man believed

  904. the word that Jesus

  905. spoke to him

  906. and went on his way.

  907. Now, you stop

  908. and think about that.

  909. You've traveled five hours.

  910. You finally see the doctor.

  911. And you tell him,

  912. you need to come to my house

  913. because my child is dying.

  914. And the doctor says,

  915. who are you to tell me

  916. how to do things?

  917. Go.

  918. Your son will be okay.

  919. How many of you

  920. would pack up right then

  921. and leave,

  922. going back

  923. and expecting your son

  924. to be okay?

  925. Okay.

  926. That man believed

  927. Jesus' word.

  928. That's what happened.

  929. The Spirit of God

  930. prompted his heart

  931. to recognize

  932. that the one

  933. he was pleading with

  934. had the authority

  935. and the power

  936. to do something

  937. 16 miles away

  938. at that instant.

  939. And he left.

  940. He left.

  941. Satisfied.

  942. As we find,

  943. when he got back,

  944. everybody said,

  945. hey,

  946. you're not going

  947. to believe this.

  948. Five hours ago,

  949. your son got better.

  950. Hmm.

  951. Yeah.

  952. And then what we read there,

  953. it says,

  954. and he himself

  955. believed in all

  956. his household.

  957. Aren't you encouraged

  958. that we have

  959. this little picture

  960. of developing faith

  961. that isn't just like

  962. the woman at the well?

  963. Huh?

  964. I mean,

  965. all we know

  966. is Jesus said

  967. to this woman,

  968. go call your husband,

  969. and she says,

  970. well,

  971. I don't have one,

  972. and Jesus says,

  973. well,

  974. yeah,

  975. that's true.

  976. You've had five,

  977. and the man

  978. you're shacking up

  979. with right now,

  980. you're not married

  981. to him,

  982. and she's,

  983. bang,

  984. saved.

  985. It'd be pretty

  986. spectacular

  987. if everybody

  988. got converted

  989. that way,

  990. but the problem

  991. is there aren't

  992. that many Samaritan

  993. women at the well.

  994. There are other choices,

  995. and we have this man

  996. comes because he's

  997. driven by need

  998. and love,

  999. comes because

  1000. of the bankruptcy

  1001. of all the effort

  1002. that he'd put in,

  1003. and he comes crying

  1004. to Jesus and said,

  1005. you've got to save

  1006. my son,

  1007. and Jesus says,

  1008. it's done.

  1009. It's done.

  1010. And when he comes

  1011. back to town

  1012. and finds out

  1013. the power of Christ

  1014. over 16 miles,

  1015. it's not just a matter

  1016. of believing

  1017. in a physical miracle,

1018. but it is a matter

  1019. of believing

  1020. in the one

  1021. who came

  1022. to save lost mankind.

  1023. Here's the truth.

  1024. Here's the truth.

1025. There are some of you

  1026. here this morning

  1027. that desperately

  1028. need Christ.

  1029. And the truth

  1030. of the matter is

  1031. is that

  1032. it may be

  1033. that the pressures

  1034. and the heartaches

  1035. and the difficulties

  1036. of the moment

  1037. you are in

  1038. is nothing other

  1039. than the gentle,

  1040. persistent tapping

  1041. of the Holy Spirit

  1042. saying to you

  1043. today,

  1044. only Jesus

  1045. can solve

  1046. the problems

  1047. of your broken heart.

  1048. Only Jesus

  1049. can take away

  1050. the burden

  1051. of your sin.

  1052. Only Jesus

  1053. can forgive you

  1054. and make you

  1055. new again.

  1056. Only Jesus

  1057. is the Savior

  1058. of the world.

  1059. Do you know

  1060. what it takes

  1061. to come to faith?

  1062. Not complicated.

  1063. Number one,

  1064. recognizing

  1065. that you're

  1066. a bankrupt sinner

  1067. who cannot

  1068. in any way

  1069. redeem themselves

  1070. before a holy God.

  1071. Number two,

  1072. understanding

  1073. that the day

  1074. of judgment

  1075. is coming

  1076. eventually.

  1077. And the Spirit

  1078. of God

  1079. is prompting you

  1080. and tugging

  1081. on your heart

  1082. and saying,

  1083. deal with it

  1084. now!

  1085. Because what it

  1086. says in the Scriptures,

  1087. it says it's appointed

1088. unto man once to die

  1089. and after that,

  1090. what?

  1091. there's judgment.

  1092. And I would

  1093. encourage you

  1094. this morning

  1095. if you are here

1096. and do not know Christ,

  1097. today is the day

  1098. that you need

  1099. to humble yourself

  1100. and cry out

  1101. and say,

  1102. I stand

  1103. condemned

  1104. before a holy God.

  1105. but I believe

  1106. Jesus died

  1107. for my sins.

  1108. I can't save myself.

  1109. And I am willing

  1110. to humble myself

  1111. and say,

  1112. the mess I am

  1113. has no solution

  1114. but Jesus.

  1115. Don't let that pass.

  1116. Don't let that pass.

  1117. Let's close.

  1118. Precious God,

1119. thank you for the Lord

  1120. Jesus Christ

1121. who came into the world

  1122. to save sinners.

  1123. And I ask that

1124. as we sing this song

  1125. this morning

  1126. that your Spirit

  1127. would work

  1128. to draw people
