  1. I would like you to take your Bibles this morning and turn in them to John chapter 6.

    John 6 chapter mention

  2. ! Yesterday as I finished the sermon that I preached for my mother's memorial, I summarized

  3. ! I summarized a pastor's responsibility in the pulpit.

  4. It's not a very complicated job in that a pastor really has the responsibility of making

  5. much of Jesus and putting people on the spot of saying yes or no to God.

  6. I trust that as you take your Word in hand and follow, as we study in John chapter 6,

    John 6 chapter mention

  7. that you will also multitask in praying that the Word of God would have free course and

  8. that it would make an impact on your life and that you would leave here this morning

  9. if you don't know Christ, that you would leave here knowing Him and believing in Him for eternal

  10. life. That's one.

  11. Another thing is this, is if you are here and you know Christ, I trust that you leave here

  12. this morning with a greater affection and a delight in Him and thinking to yourself,

  13. the day is coming that I'm going to see Him face to face. That's going to be good.

  14. I want you to turn in your body. You're in John. Can you multitask? Put a finger in John chapter 6

    John 6 chapter mention

  15. and go to a verse that kind of is a driving thought behind what we're going to study.

  16. Turn to 1 Peter chapter 1 verse 8.

    1 Peter 1:8

  17. If I were to...well, there are a number of verses that are important to me, so I'll get in trouble

  18. with that one. But it's probably a verse that in the last 10 years has been one of the things that

  19. has driven me forward in my growth with loving Christ. It's this passage. 1 Peter chapter 1 verse

    1 Peter 1:8

  20. 8, it says, though you have not seen Him...stop just for a moment. Hey, look at me. Can you love

  21. somebody you don't know? Come on. Can you really love somebody you don't know? Let me just throw out

  22. a couple names and just see if they really resonate with your soul. Genghis Khan. Oh, yeah. Warm fuzzies

  23. for him. You know, it's like, Julius Caesar, huh? No, no. Face it, we can't love somebody we don't know.

  24. And here is Peter saying, though you have not seen Him, you love Him. What that undeniably points to

  25. is that Peter recognized that believers, you and me today, can know Him. And how do we end up knowing

  26. Jesus? How do we end up genuinely, truly loving Him? It is by discovering the beauty and the glory

  27. of Christ in the Scriptures with the enabling of the Holy Spirit. Can you kind of track that in your

  28. mind? How is it that we grow in loving Christ? It is by discovering the beauty and the glory of Christ

  29. in the Scriptures with the enabling of the Holy Spirit. Hey, listen. If the Holy Spirit is not helping

  30. you to grow in your affection for the Lord Jesus Christ, it's not going to take place. More

  31. information apart from the enabling of the Spirit of God is just more information.

  32. And so if you're sitting here this morning and you do not have a love for the Lord Jesus Christ,

  33. there is something deeply wrong. And I pray that the preaching of the Word of God this morning brings

  34. you to the point of saying, I desperately need God to do a work in my heart.

  35. And I trust that this morning that our study, go back now if you would to John chapter 6,

    John 6 chapter mention

  36. ends up really giving to you just a welling sense of, man, I can't believe the Jesus that loves me

  37. and that is my Savior and that someday I am going to see face to face. You know, it's like, wow.

  38. I hate it. I have to talk about my mom. She's with the Lord. But I remember about two weeks ago,

  39. mom had about three or four dips where we thought she was going to die and she didn't and then she did.

  40. But I remember about two weeks ago, maybe three weeks ago, she had a picture of dad hanging there

  41. where she was and she said, you know what, I want to cross up there right next to dad.

  42. So that the first thing I see is Jesus and the second thing I see is dad, okay?

  43. I want it to be that way in my life, right? The first thing I think about is Jesus. Everything else is second.

  44. And I trust that part of our study this morning will give to you a growing affection for the Lord Jesus

  45. that you will have a longing to see Him face to face, right?

  46. Let me have you look now with me to the passage beginning there in verse 16.

  47. When evening came, His disciples went down to the sea, got into the boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum.

  48. It was now dark and Jesus had not yet come to them.

  49. The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing.

  50. When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat,

  51. and they were frightened.

  52. But He said to them, it is I.

  53. Do not be afraid.

  54. Then they were glad to take Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.

  55. One of the things that I have worked at in our studies in the book of John

  56. is that for the most part, I have kept the cross-references primarily within the book itself.

  57. And I don't think that is a necessary discipline for every time a pastor preaches.

  58. But in my work in the book of John, I've wanted to stay kind of focused in that and limit it.

  59. But we're going to step beyond that this morning in particular,

  60. and we're going to rely upon the synoptics because there are details that I think really help us appreciate

  61. what was going on in this seemingly kind of minor little picture in the ministry that Christ had to His disciples.

  62. So as we take up this passage, let's recognize, first of all, supreme protection.

  63. Not immediately on the face of it.

  64. And you might be thinking that the protection that I am referencing really is what happened in the storm,

  65. and that's not the case.

  66. Our text, beginning there in verse 16, is rather innocent on the face of it.

  67. And if we're not paying attention to the context,

  68. and we don't kind of begin to think outside of this passage itself

  69. and recognize both the hearts of the disciples and things we find elsewhere,

  70. we probably just gloss over and move on.

  71. And it tells us there on the passage that when evening came,

  72. the disciples got in the sea in the boat,

  73. and they launched out across the Sea of Galilee, actually a large lake.

  74. But we need to ask ourselves a question, why?

  75. Why did they do that?

  76. We do get some idea from John chapter 6, verse 14 and 15,

    John 6:14

  77. so let's kind of go back a little bit and see where that takes us.

  78. When the people saw the sign that He had done,

  79. they said,

  80. this is indeed the prophet who has come into the world.

  81. Perceiving then that they were about to come and take Him by force to make Him king,

  82. Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by Himself.

  83. You see, what had happened, and it's important for us to recognize,

  84. is that after Jesus had performed the miracle in turning five loaves and two little fishes

  85. into a meal for probably 20,000 people,

  86. the people were very impressed with this.

  87. This was a significant miracle,

  88. and it's one that they could kind of relate to personally.

  89. And it, whoa, I mean, how many of you like to have free food for the rest of your life,

  90. never worry about dinner,

  91. or how many of you have ever called up your wife at lunchtime and said,

  92. hey, what's for supper?

  93. Jesus is taking care of it.

  94. It's all right.

  95. You know what I mean?

  96. Hey, they liked the idea of having everything cared for,

  97. and they were pressing,

  98. and they were really kind of fired up to get Jesus to be their king.

  99. Now, finger in John, turn back to Matthew chapter 14.

    Matthew 14 chapter mention

  100. Matthew chapter 14 gives us a little further information

    Matthew 14 chapter mention

  101. that colors our understanding of what we see there in John chapter 6, verse 16.

    John 6:16

  102. In verse 22 and 23, let me read it to you.

  103. Immediately, he made the disciples get into the boat

  104. and go before him to the other side while he dismissed the crowd.

  105. And after he had dismissed the crowds,

  106. he went up on the mountain by himself to pray.

  107. When evening came, he was there alone.

  108. I want you to recognize that, for one,

  109. Jesus actually forced his disciples to leave the environment

  110. in which everything was just completely enthusiastic

  111. in its endorsement and approval of Jesus,

  112. and at least what he had done on the surface.

  113. He sent the disciples away.

  114. He made them go.

  115. Not only did he make the disciples go,

  116. but he dismissed himself from the crowd,

  117. and he removed himself to a distant place

  118. and stepped away from them

  119. and departed from the environment

  120. where the temptation and the enthusiasm of the moment,

  121. everybody,

  122. we want you to be our king.

  123. He got out of that situation.

  124. I want you to recognize that in dismissing the crowd,

  125. Jesus protected his mission

  126. and his own heart

  127. from being sidetracked

  128. by his temporary approval rating

  129. from the ministry and the mission

  130. that his father had sent him to accomplish.

  131. How many of you like when people like you?

  132. Huh? Huh?

  133. On the very face of it,

  134. we like compliments,

  135. but even more than that,

  136. we take great comfort

  137. when people appreciate what we're doing

  138. and let us know how important we are.

  139. And, you know,

  140. you have to stop and realize

  141. that it wasn't just Jesus

  142. that was affected by the attitudes of the crowd,

  143. and Jesus had the wisdom and heart of his father

  144. to know what he was there doing.

  145. I want you to recognize

  146. that the disciples, without question,

  147. must have been carried away a little bit

  148. by kingdom-itis.

  149. What do I mean by kingdom-itis?

  150. Think with me.

  151. The disciples,

  152. if you kind of would track a little later

  153. in the book of John

  154. and actually in the synoptic gospels,

  155. do you remember what their standard arguments

  156. and disputes were about?

  157. It was about who was going to be

  158. the greatest in the kingdom.

  159. Hey, the day is coming

  160. when Jesus is going to be on the throne,

  161. and I'm going to be his right-hand man,

  162. and when I walk in the room,

  163. everybody's going to stand up and say,

  164. yeah, Tim, what does Jesus want?

  165. You know, it's like,

  166. huh, really important person.

  167. I'm close to Jesus, you know.

  168. And the disciples were all about this,

  169. and here, the moment was in front of them,

  170. 20,000 people saying,

  171. we want Jesus, we want Jesus.

  172. And how were the disciples getting into this?

  173. Whew, this is the moment.

  174. Guys, it's going to happen.

  175. It had been a little rocky here,

  176. you know, cleansing the temple

  177. and having a little spitting matches

  178. with the Pharisees.

  179. Those haven't gone over very well,

  180. but now where are we?

  181. Jesus has fed the 20,000,

  182. and everybody's with him.

  183. It's time to step up and take control.

  184. And Jesus grabs his low-life disciples.

  185. He says, listen, I love you.

  186. Get in the boat.

  187. No, no, no, Jesus.

  188. Do you understand?

  189. The moment it could pass,

  190. they may not like you so much tomorrow.

  191. By the way, you move a little bit ahead

  192. in John chapter 6,

    John 6 chapter mention

  193. and you find that Jesus preached his,

  194. what is known as

  195. disciple elimination sermon, right?

  196. But here is Jesus

  197. at the moment of opportunity,

  198. and everybody is saying,

  199. we want you to be our king.

  200. And he grabs his disciples,

  201. and he says, hey, out of here.

  202. I want you to understand that

  203. in doing so,

  204. Jesus, for one thing,

  205. protected himself.

  206. He stayed focused on the mission

  207. of our salvation,

  208. not in being a secular king

  209. and making a momentary difference

  210. in minor issues of politics

  211. there in Judea and Jerusalem.

  212. Jesus also protected his disciples.

  213. I want you to recognize

  214. that their desire for Jesus

  215. to be elevated really had its roots

  216. not in their affection for him principally

  217. as the Lord of glory

  218. and the Savior who came into the world

  219. to save sinners.

  220. We know from repeated illustrations

  221. in the Gospels

  222. that their interest was

  223. in their own position.

  224. They were interested in themselves.

  225. And Jesus, knowing the frailty

  226. of their hearts,

  227. he said, hey, listen,

  228. we're not going to be riding in motorcades.

  229. We're not going to have everybody

  230. kind of bowing and scraping for us.

  231. We're not going to be flying around

  232. in private jets

  233. and doing wonderful things

  234. in arenas

  235. and making lots of money

  236. off of this.

  237. Here, guys,

  238. out of here.

  239. You can imagine

  240. the disciples

  241. kind of saying

  242. in their hearts,

  243. what's the deal with Jesus?

  244. Everybody loves him,

  245. and they love us too.

  246. Why are we doing this?

  247. And so I kind of want you

  248. to imagine with me,

  249. here's Jesus saying,

  250. there's a time for you

  251. to get away

  252. from the temptation

  253. of the moment,

  254. get out of the situation.

  255. And so to you as believers,

  256. I say along with Jesus,

  257. get in the boat, believer,

  258. and get away from temptation.

  259. When you find yourself

  260. in the situation

  261. where your heart

  262. is being drawn

  263. to the affections

  264. of the world

  265. and things that have

  266. no eternal consequence,

  267. it is time

  268. to get in the boat

  269. and get away

  270. from the situation.

  271. And by the way,

  272. where did they go

  273. when they got into the boat?

  274. They went into a storm.

  275. So I think it's fair

  276. for us to recognize

  277. that because of Christ's love

  278. for you

  279. and Christ's love for me,

  280. He will take us away

  281. from a place

  282. that will overwhelm us,

  283. but He may well lead you

  284. into a storm

  285. at the same time.

  286. Isn't that strange?

  287. Because we like to think

  288. that if we're following Jesus,

  289. it's all going to be

  290. smooth sailing

  291. and everything's going

  292. to be perfect

  293. and we're not going

  294. to have any troubles.

  295. Well, Jesus said,

  296. hey, out of here, guys.

  297. I want to protect you.

  298. Get in the boat.

  299. Get!

  300. And off they go

  301. and the next thing

  302. they have

  303. is a mess on their hands.

  304. Now for these

  305. simple little fishermen

  306. that became disciples,

  307. getting into a boat

  308. and rowing across

  309. the Sea of Galilee

  310. was no big detail.

  311. Thanks to Google

  312. and Wikipedia,

  313. I know that a rowboat

  314. about this size

  315. probably make about

  316. two, two and a half hours,

  317. two and a half miles per hour

  318. and possibly

  319. ten miles across.

  320. And so they kind of imagined

  321. a late night arrival

  322. on the other shore

  323. and back off they were

  324. to wherever they wanted to rest.

  325. and that's not the way

  326. it worked out.

  327. You notice there

  328. in verse 18

  329. it says,

  330. the sea became rough

  331. because a strong wind

  332. was blowing.

  333. He had sent them away

  334. from the temporary approval

  335. of the throng

  336. and he'd gone up the mountain

  337. to pray alone.

  338. And as he prayed

  339. throughout that night,

  340. here were the

  341. seamen disciples

  342. rowing

  343. and as they began to row

  344. things got tougher

  345. and tougher

  346. and they had a headwind

  347. and when you're rowing

  348. a large rowboat

  349. with a bunch of guys in it

  350. and there's a headwind against,

  351. they weren't making

  352. any headway at all hardly.

  353. It tells us there

  354. that they'd made

  355. about three or four miles.

  356. And if you pay attention,

  357. they were in,

  358. as it says here,

  359. in the fourth watch.

  360. That's between three

  361. and six o'clock

  362. in the morning.

  363. And so if you turn

  364. into your Bible,

  365. you're there in John,

  366. keep your finger there,

  367. but I want you to go over

  368. to Mark

  369. in Mark chapter 6,

    Mark 6 chapter mention

  370. we read that

  371. things were not going

  372. well at all.

  373. Verse 48,

  374. he saw them

  375. that they were making

  376. headway painfully

  377. for the wind

  378. was against them

  379. and about the fourth

  380. watch of the night,

  381. he came to them

  382. walking on the sea.

  383. We don't do boat rides

  384. very often

  385. and I would venture

  386. to say that if I were

  387. to ask how many

  388. of you have rowed

  389. across a lake before,

  390. there are very few

  391. of you that would say

  392. you've done that.

  393. Rowing is hard work.

  394. It really is.

  395. And rowing a boat

  396. that can carry

  397. 12 men

  398. means pushing

  399. a lot of water

  400. out of the way

  401. with brute force

  402. to make any headway.

  403. these guys had been

  404. rowing all night

  405. and the storm

  406. got stronger

  407. and more powerful

  408. and they were

  409. aware that they were

  410. in a difficult

  411. place.

  412. It says there

  413. in Mark,

  414. and we look at it,

  415. it says,

  416. they were making

  417. headway painfully.

  418. What had begun

  419. as a quiet boat ride

  420. had turned

  421. into an absolute

  422. disaster.

  423. Now,

  424. they were experienced

  425. fishermen,

  426. but it's understandable

  427. that the storm

  428. became more

  429. than they could bear.

  430. Incidentally,

  431. this is not

  432. the only storm

  433. that is recorded

  434. in the Gospels.

  435. It's the second one

  436. in which the disciples

  437. found them

  438. in a mess.

  439. Can I give you

  440. just a little bit

  441. of detail

  442. on the first one?

  443. Because in the first one,

  444. guess who was

  445. in the boat

  446. with them?

  447. It was Jesus.

  448. And where was he?

  449. In the boat,

  450. asleep.

  451. I mean,

  452. he was just,

  453. you know,

  454. just resting

  455. and these guys

  456. were just sweating

  457. bullets in the storm

  458. and finally

  459. they wake him up.

  460. I like it

  461. in the King James.

  462. It says,

  463. carest thou not

  464. that we perish?

  465. You know,

  466. I mean,

  467. hey,

  468. if you like a little

  469. King's English,

  470. there it is.

  471. Carest thou not

  472. that we perish?

  473. You know,

  474. it's like,

  475. where are you,

  476. bud?

  477. We're suffering

  478. and you're not

  479. paying attention.

  480. How'd that one end up?

  481. Remember?

  482. Jesus calms the storm

  483. and everything's okay.

  484. Well,

  485. here they were

  486. rowing again.

  487. Knowing the disciples,

  488. I don't think

  489. one of them thought

  490. or one of them

  491. said to the other,

  492. wouldn't it be nice

  493. if Jesus showed up

  494. right now?

  495. Do you think

  496. the disciples

  497. were thinking that way?

  498. No?

  499. They were just

  500. pulling on the oars

  501. and come on,

  502. John,

  503. will you put a little

  504. more back to this thing?

  505. Do you realize

  506. we've only made

  507. three hours,

  508. you know,

  509. three miles here,

  510. we are not doing very,

  511. nobody stopped to think,

  512. oh man,

  513. I wish Jesus were here.

  514. We could really use

  515. Jesus' help right now.

  516. Man,

  517. why hasn't he come to hell?

  518. That didn't go

  519. through their minds.

  520. They were doing

  521. their own thing.

  522. We've done that too,

  523. haven't we?

  524. Haven't we?

  525. Bit in the boat,

  526. slogging across

  527. through the problem

  528. and never stopped

  529. for a moment

  530. to say,

  531. Jesus,

  532. we need your help.

  533. I want you to mark,

  534. still there in Mark

    Mark 6 chapter mention

  535. chapter 6.

  536. Let me read it again

  537. to you.

  538. It says,

  539. and he saw that they

  540. were making headway

  541. painfully,

  542. for the wind

  543. was against them.

  544. I want you to understand

  545. that Jesus had,

  546. for one thing,

  547. sent his disciples

  548. away from the temptation

  549. of popularity

  550. into a difficult situation.

  551. I think sometimes

  552. we assume

  553. that the difficult

  554. situations we are in

  555. happen to us

  556. because Jesus

  557. is not paying attention.

  558. That's not necessarily

  559. the case.

  560. Sometimes he puts us there,

  561. and he puts us there

  562. to teach things

  563. about his sufficiency

  564. that we would not

  565. learn apart from that.

  566. over in 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 12 chapter mention

  567. chapter 12,

  568. the apostle

  569. recounts

  570. or shares with us

  571. the experience

  572. of having some kind

  573. of physical affliction.

  574. The Bible doesn't tell us,

  575. but it does tell us

  576. that he pled with the Lord

  577. three times

  578. to have it taken away,

  579. and the Lord said,

  580. no, no, no.

  581. I've allowed this

  582. in order that you

  583. might learn

  584. my sufficiency.

  585. He said,

  586. when I am weak,

  587. what Paul says,

  588. when I am weak,

  589. then he is strong.

  590. I find out

  591. his sufficiency

  592. in the moment

  593. of my distress

  594. because that's where

  595. I discover

  596. that he can help

  597. the best.

  598. I want you to understand

  599. that Jesus sent

  600. his disciples

  601. into the storm

  602. knowing what was

  603. going to come,

  604. and we can count

  605. on Jesus

  606. to send us

  607. into storms.

  608. Don't think to yourself

  609. that being a believer

  610. is going to mean

  611. that you have

  612. some kind of

  613. contractual guarantee

  614. that you're not going

  615. to have problems

  616. in your life.

  617. That's not true.

  618. That's not true.

  619. In fact,

  620. if you were to track

  621. through the Scriptures,

  622. you will find

  623. over and over again

  624. that in both

  625. the Old Testament

  626. and the New Testament

  627. that God uses

  628. problems and difficulties

  629. to make us stronger

  630. in our walk

  631. and our confidence

  632. in him.

  633. Over in Exodus,

  634. and you don't need

  635. to turn there,

  636. Exodus chapter 13

    Exodus 13:17

  637. verse 17 says this,

  638. when God led

  639. his people

  640. out of the land

  641. of Egypt,

  642. he took them

  643. the long way

  644. because he was concerned

  645. that when they

  646. eventually got

  647. to Palestine,

  648. to the promised land,

  649. if they hadn't

  650. been toughened up,

  651. they would have been

  652. too much of the wuss.

  653. Do you know

  654. what a wuss is?

  655. How many of you

  656. know what a wuss is?

  657. A wuss is just

  658. kind of a Casper

  659. milk toast.

  660. You know,

  661. it's a guy

  662. who doesn't

  663. have any backbone.

  664. He said,

  665. he was concerned

  666. that when they

  667. arrived,

  668. they wouldn't

  669. have the guts

  670. to do what

  671. needed to be done,

  672. which was go

  673. sticking long

  674. pointy spears

  675. in people's

  676. bodies and

  677. killing them.

  678. He said,

  679. hey,

  680. you weren't

  681. into the battle.

  682. God toughened

  683. them up.

  684. God left

  685. enemies in Israel.

  686. It also tells us

  687. in the Old Testament,

  688. God left enemies

  689. in Israel in order

  690. that the coming

  691. generation would

  692. know what it was

  693. to deal with

  694. adversity and

  695. hardship.

  696. So,

  697. I want you to

  698. recognize that

  699. Jesus takes us

  700. into storms and

  701. He has an intention

  702. in doing that.

  703. But there's something

  704. else that I want you

  705. to mark here in

  706. this passage.

  707. Remember,

  708. Jesus had gone up

  709. the hill to pray

  710. and He had spent

  711. a great deal of time

  712. in sweet communion

  713. with His Father.

  714. And prayer with

  715. His Father

  716. was not an obligation

  717. or something to be

  718. endured.

  719. It was a time of

  720. enjoyment and blessing

  721. and peace.

  722. But I am struck

  723. by the fact that

  724. even in the midst

  725. of Christ's prayer

  726. with His Father,

  727. He had His eyes

  728. set on His disciples.

  729. That's what we know.

  730. And so,

  731. you can count on

  732. Jesus watching over you

  733. and watching over me

  734. with unconditional love.

  735. One of the books

  736. that Judith and I

  737. over the years

  738. have found to be

  739. so blessed

  740. is a book by

  741. K. Arthur

  742. called

  743. As Silver Refined.

  744. It's a book

  745. that God brought

  746. providentially

  747. into our lives

  748. at a point of

  749. real difficulty

  750. and heartache.

  751. And one of the things

  752. that K. Arthur

  753. points out

  754. is that there's not

  755. a moment in our life

  756. that comes to us

  757. that has not

  758. already been measured

  759. in the hands

  760. of a loving Father

  761. He never lets

  762. something happen

  763. to us

  764. that He's not

  765. already weighed

  766. and measured

  767. for its effect

  768. on you

  769. and His care

  770. and love

  771. means that

  772. that circumstance

  773. that you find yourself in

  774. is going to be something

  775. that is going to produce

  776. growth

  777. and maturity in you.

  778. You know,

  779. we sometimes look

  780. at the hardships

  781. and difficulties

  782. that we're enduring

  783. and we think,

  784. I can't go through that.

  785. I don't know why

  786. I'm in this situation.

  787. I want you to know

  788. that in the midst

  789. of the situation

  790. Jesus is paying attention.

  791. He knows what

  792. you're going through

  793. and He cares for you

  794. and He is in control

  795. of that moment.

  796. There's one other thing

  797. that I want you to find

  798. there in the passage

  799. and turn back

  800. to John chapter 6

    John 6 chapter mention

  801. if you will

  802. and I want you to find

  803. sufficient encouragement.

  804. Not only was Jesus

  805. protecting His disciples

  806. by taking them away

  807. from the temptation,

  808. not only was He

  809. paying attention

  810. to their need

  811. in the middle

  812. of the storm,

  813. but He brought

  814. sufficient encouragement.

  815. In John chapter 6

    John 6:19

  816. verse 19,

  817. here's what we read.

  818. It says,

  819. When they had rowed

  820. about three or four miles,

  821. they saw Jesus

  822. walking on the sea

  823. and coming near the boat

  824. and they were frightened.

  825. They were tired.

  826. They were completely

  827. overwhelmed by the storm.

  828. And you can imagine

  829. twelve wet,

  830. frustrated fishermen

  831. together in a boat

  832. kind of commiserating together.

  833. How many of you

  834. find that grumbling

  835. and complaining

  836. just makes things go better?

  837. Raise your hand

  838. and say,

  839. I know that.

  840. But even though

  841. we know it doesn't

  842. make things go better,

  843. how many of us

  844. do it anyway?

  845. I'm just guessing

  846. that the disciples

  847. were kind of commiserating

  848. with each other.

  849. I mean,

  850. hey,

  851. fuss, fuss, fuss,

  852. and suddenly,

  853. you know,

  854. rowing and someone

  855. looks over there.

  856. Whoa,

  857. who is that?

  858. Walking on the water?

  859. I mean,

  860. talk about a pretty

  861. spectacular miracle.

  862. I mean,

  863. that had to be

  864. a little unnerving,

  865. you know.

  866. Whoa.

  867. In fact,

  868. you know what?

  869. Let's go back

  870. to Matthew chapter 14 again

    Matthew 14 chapter mention

  871. because we're going

  872. to see that it wasn't like,

  873. hey, Jesus,

  874. good to see you.

  875. Come on over

  876. and help us.

  877. Matthew chapter 14,

    Matthew 14 chapter mention

  878. let's get a picture

  879. of this thing.

  880. there they are,

  881. sweating.

  882. Jesus arrives.

  883. Not a one of them said,

  884. whew,

  885. glad you're here.

  886. Seeing you reminds me

  887. of the last time

  888. you helped us.

  889. No,

  890. that's not what happened.

  891. Matthew chapter 14,

    Matthew 14:26

  892. verse 26 and 27,

  893. it says,

  894. but when the disciples

  895. saw him walking

  896. on the sea,

  897. they were terrified.

  898. How many of you

  899. have been terrified before?

  900. I mean absolutely

  901. to the point

  902. that you couldn't

  903. get your breath.

  904. That's what happened here.

  905. They were terrified.

  906. And it says,

  907. it's a ghost

  908. and they cried out

  909. in fear.

  910. I mean,

  911. these are adult men.

  912. Do you get that?

  913. Now,

  914. listen to me.

  915. Adult men,

  916. men who had spent

  917. their lives

  918. on that lake

  919. fishing,

  920. for them to cry out

  921. in terror

  922. meant that they

  923. were absolutely

  924. overwhelmed

  925. by what they saw

  926. in the moment.

  927. And listen to what

  928. Jesus said.

  929. Verse 27,

  930. and immediately

  931. Jesus spoke to them

  932. saying,

  933. take heart.

  934. It is I.

  935. Do not be afraid.

  936. Take heart.

  937. It is I.

  938. Do not be afraid.

  939. And so as you

  940. pick up on this,

  941. I want you to stop

  942. and realize

  943. that the ones

  944. we're talking about

  945. are hand-picked men,

  946. at least 11 of them,

  947. that are going to be

  948. pillars of the church.

  949. The New Testament church.

  950. And here they are

  951. in storm number two,

  952. completely overwhelmed.

  953. And so when you find

  954. yourself on occasion

  955. completely overwhelmed

  956. and later on

  957. kind of frustrated,

  958. how come I didn't get it?

  959. Will you be patient

  960. with yourself

  961. as Jesus has been

  962. patient with you

  963. and as Jesus was

  964. patient with the disciples?

  965. Don't you wish

  966. that spiritual growth

  967. happened on a

  968. more rapid pattern?

  969. Bear with it.

  970. Jesus is far more

  971. patient with our frailty

  972. than sometimes

  973. we are with ourselves.

  974. And here is Jesus.

  975. Instead of berating,

  976. instead of chewing up

  977. the disciples

  978. and spitting them out,

  979. hey guys,

  980. what's the problem?

  981. Do you remember

  982. the last storm?

  983. What about the feeding

  984. of the...

  985. No, he didn't do

  986. any of that.

  987. He says,

  988. hey, calm down.

  989. It's I.

  990. Take heart.

  991. And so I want you

  992. to understand this morning

  993. that for one thing

  994. as believers

  995. you're going to find

  996. yourself in storms.

  997. Admit it.

  998. There are going

  999. to be storms.

  1000. Don't get caught

  1001. by the enemy

  1002. with this unbelievable

  1003. and unreasonable

  1004. expectation that

  1005. just because you're

  1006. a Christian

  1007. you're not going

  1008. to have heartaches

  1009. and difficulties.

  1010. You will have them.

  1011. But here's what

1012. I want you to understand.

  1013. Jesus is with you

  1014. in your storm.

1015. That's what we see here.

  1016. He had been watching

  1017. even in the time

  1018. of his sweet communion

  1019. with his father.

  1020. He had his eyes

  1021. on his disciples.

  1022. Do you understand that?

  1023. He knew their need

1024. and at the right moment

  1025. he showed up

  1026. and when he did

  1027. they were terrified

  1028. and he says,

  1029. hey, calm down guys.

  1030. It's me.

  1031. It's me.

  1032. I am so overwhelmed

  1033. when I stop

  1034. and think about

  1035. Christ's love

  1036. for his own.

  1037. Weak as the disciples

  1038. were at grasping

  1039. the glory of Christ

  1040. and his ability

1041. to take care of needs.

  1042. Overwhelmed as they were

  1043. by the storm

  1044. and then overwhelmed

  1045. as they were

  1046. by his presence,

  1047. Jesus very tenderly

  1048. dealt with them

  1049. in their frailty

  1050. without scolding them.

1051. And mark one other thing.

  1052. Look in verse 21.

  1053. Then they were glad

  1054. to take him

  1055. into the boat

  1056. and mark the last

  1057. little part

  1058. and immediately

  1059. the boat

  1060. was at the land

1061. to which they were going.

1062. I want you to mark this

  1063. in your own thoughts

  1064. in your own life.

1065. Jesus will meet your need

1066. and he will take his disciples

  1067. to the other side.

  1068. Do you know that?

  1069. Where you are

  1070. in your difficulty

1071. and the storm of life

  1072. that you're enduring,

1073. I want you to know this,

  1074. that Jesus is committed

  1075. not to abandon you

1076. and not to leave you

  1077. in that mess

  1078. and that heartache.

1079. Do you know what he said?

  1080. To his disciples,

  1081. he said,

1082. Lo, I am with you

  1083. even unto the ends

  1084. of the age.

1085. I am there with you.

  1086. Listen to me carefully.

1087. I want you to get

  1088. your hands around this.

  1089. The principal purpose

  1090. of this book

1091. is not to give us

  1092. more information

  1093. but to bring us

  1094. face to face

  1095. with the lover

  1096. of our soul

  1097. and establish

  1098. a permanent,

  1099. personal,

  1100. genuine relationship

1101. with the Lord of glory.

  1102. Do you understand that?

  1103. And when you read

  1104. this story about Jesus

  1105. and the storm,

  1106. you have to think

  1107. to yourself,

  1108. man,

  1109. if he put up

  1110. with those disciples,

  1111. I got a chance.

  1112. He loves me

  1113. and he is not

1114. turning his back on me

  1115. in the midst

  1116. of the mess

  1117. and the heartache

  1118. and the difficulty

  1119. that I am enduring.

  1120. That's my Jesus.

  1121. Do you know that?

  1122. Do you know that?

  1123. And so my question

  1124. this morning is this,

  1125. truthfully,

1126. I want you to think

  1127. of that.

  1128. Do you know him?

  1129. Do you know him?

  1130. I'm not talking

  1131. about chronology

  1132. of the Bible.

  1133. Well, I remember

  1134. that he came

  1135. and he did this.

  1136. No.

  1137. Do you know him?

  1138. Do you have

  1139. a personal relationship

1140. with the Lord Jesus Christ?

  1141. And by the way,

1142. how do we get that?

  1143. Oh, it's by going

  1144. to church

  1145. on a regular basis

  1146. and checking the box

1147. that says I was there.

  1148. You know,

  1149. it's maybe I need

  1150. to be baptized

  1151. or maybe I need

  1152. to take communion

  1153. or maybe,

  1154. you know,

  1155. hey, listen.

  1156. Here's the way

  1157. a person comes

  1158. to a personal relationship

  1159. with Christ.

1160. I want you to hear this

  1161. and get it clear

  1162. in your mind.

1163. You come to a personal

  1164. relationship with Christ

  1165. with, first of all,

  1166. sensing the convicting

1167. power of the Holy Spirit

  1168. that says I am a bankrupt

  1169. and miserable sinner

  1170. in the presence

  1171. of a holy God

  1172. and there is nothing

  1173. I can do

1174. that can bring to me

  1175. credit and glory

  1176. and worth

  1177. and I stand justly

  1178. condemned before God.

  1179. the first place

  1180. that we come to

  1181. is an understanding

  1182. of our own unworthiness

  1183. and brokenness.

  1184. The second thing

  1185. that happens

1186. is that the Spirit of God

  1187. gives to us

  1188. a conviction
