  1. How many of you enjoyed singing this morning?

  2. Come on, raise your hand.

  3. ! Did you enjoy singing this morning?

  4. We sang a little longer than we normally do.

  5. ! Listen to me.

  6. And that's okay.

  7. In fact, that's wonderful.

  8. But I still get time.

  9. And honestly, I have a heart that's full.

  10. And the truth of the matter is,

  11. is that the Scriptures are what make our singing what it is.

  12. Do you understand that?

  13. It's the truth that frames our singing.

  14. And it's the truth that encourages our affection.

  15. And it's the truth that we delight in this morning.

  16. Let me read the passage to set the text

  17. and then ask that you join me in prayer.

  18. John chapter 6, we're going to look at first at verse 53.

    John 6 chapter mention

  19. Verse 63.

  20. They said,

  21. This is a hard saying.

  22. Who can listen to it?

  23. Our Father God,

  24. for us this morning,

  25. prayer is

  26. our thankful

  27. expression of confidence in you,

  28. our happy

  29. recognition of your

  30. person and your presence

  31. and your

  32. abiding interest

  33. that we who are your children

  34. find the glory

  35. and the fullness

  36. that we have in relationship

  37. with the Lord Jesus Christ.

  38. And in this

  39. period of time

  40. that we call life

  41. before we step into your presence

  42. as believers

  43. to enjoy

  44. the presence of Christ

  45. forever,

  46. we are thankful

  47. we are thankful

  48. that you have given to us

  49. your word,

  50. you have given to us

  51. your Holy Spirit,

  52. and we would ask

  53. that we

  54. with humility

  55. would depend upon the Spirit

  56. and rely upon your word

  57. that we would grow

  58. in our love

  59. for the Lord Jesus

  60. that someday

  61. we are going to see

  62. and that as a result

  63. of that,

  64. we grow in our humility

  65. and our affection,

  66. the holiness

  67. of our passion

  68. for your glory,

  69. the clear

  70. and deliberate

  71. lifestyles

  72. that display

  73. the character

  74. of Christ

  75. in a broken

  76. and struggling world.

  77. We ask this

  78. in Jesus' name.

  79. Amen.

  80. I want you to know

  81. as you pick up this passage

  82. we're going to be looking

  83. at John chapter 6

    John 6 chapter mention

  84. from verse 60

  85. to 72

  86. and I'll tell you

  87. ahead of time

  88. that what this chapter is

  89. is a closing summary

  90. or better yet

  91. a grand finale.

  92. As I was thinking about it

  93. in a musical sense

  94. and I don't profess

  95. to be a musician

  96. of any form,

  97. but I do appreciate

  98. good music.

  99. I would say

  100. that in some senses

  101. John chapter 6

    John 6:60

  102. verse 60

  103. from that verse

  104. on to 72

  105. is a little bit

  106. like the Hallelujah Chorus.

  107. It is the summary

  108. and the great blowout

  109. to this extended chapter

  110. in which John

  111. has been building

  112. a case

  113. and lifting

  114. the glory

  115. and the supremacy

  116. of Christ.

  117. It's also a little bit

  118. like Tchaikovsky's

  119. Overture 1812

  120. and any of you

  121. that are musicians

  122. know how that ends.

  123. Tchaikovsky was writing

  124. to celebrate

  125. the victory

  126. of the Russian army

  127. over the invading French

  128. and the way in which

  129. that comes to a grand finale

  130. is they actually used cannons

  131. to kind of boom, boom.

  132. Now they emulate that

  133. using cymbals and drums

  134. and even on occasions

  135. they'll pipe in

  136. the sound of cannons.

  137. but it's something

  138. that if you are

  139. in any way

  140. inclined musically

  141. when you come to this part

  142. your hair stands on end.

  143. How many of you

  144. have that happen

  145. every now and then?

  146. Your hair stands on end.

  147. I mean,

  148. on the arm

  149. it goes up.

  150. It happens to me

  151. when I'm fired up.

  152. The hair on my arm

  153. goes up.

  154. They're like,

  155. I'm into that.

  156. My wife said

  157. don't shout

  158. so I gotta back off

  159. a little bit.

  160. Hi Judith.

  161. I love you.

  162. She's my best critic.

  163. So,

  164. anyway,

  165. don't shout.

  166. I made a note to myself

  167. even and it doesn't

  168. pay attention.

  169. But you know,

  170. you get fired up

  171. thinking about

  172. what we're looking at

  173. this morning.

  174. This is

  175. the climax

  176. to John chapter 6.

    John 6 chapter mention

  177. There'll be more climaxes,

  178. trust me,

  179. but this is

  180. an early one.

  181. Remember how

  182. John comes together

  183. and what his goal is?

  184. He wants us

  185. in reading the book

  186. of John

  187. to know

  188. that Jesus

  189. is the Christ,

  190. the Savior of the world

  191. that knowing that

  192. we can believe on Him.

  193. John 6 opens with,

  194. how's it open?

  195. Does anybody remember?

  196. Remember he takes

  197. his disciples

  198. and they go away

  199. because they need

  200. a little bit of break.

  201. They're kind of washed out

  202. and fatigued from ministry

  203. and they need to get away

  204. but when they're getting away

  205. the crowd follows them

  206. about 20,000

  207. and they're out there

  208. and when he sees

  209. the opportunity

  210. guess what he does?

  211. He starts teaching.

  212. I mean at the end of the day

  213. his affection for people

  214. led him to open

  215. the scriptures

  216. and inform them

  217. of the things

  218. they needed desperately.

  219. They stay

  220. past dinner time

  221. and he feeds them

  222. about 20,000.

  223. As the result of that

  224. you'll remember

  225. that the crowd decided

  226. that it would be

  227. a good idea

  228. to make him king

  229. and what does he do?

  230. He resists.

  231. He sends his disciples away

  232. to protect them

  233. from being carried away

  234. with that ambition

  235. and then he goes up the mountain

  236. to pray by himself.

  237. The next day

  238. he finds himself again

  239. surrounded by the crowd.

  240. He had moved over to Capernaum

  241. and there he was

  242. and the crowd came

  243. and he preached

  244. an extended sermon.

  245. An extended sermon.

  246. And in that sermon

  247. that we find

  248. the substance of it here

  249. he makes it

  250. undeniably clear

  251. that he is

  252. the only way

  253. of salvation.

  254. He alone.

  255. He makes reference

  256. to the fact

  257. that he would die

  258. and that his sacrifice

  259. would be the only hope

  260. that people have

  261. in satisfying

  262. the wrath

  263. of a holy God

  264. against sin

  265. and that faith

  266. in him

  267. was the only way

  268. of heaven.

  269. Well as you look

  270. at this passage

  271. what we're going

  272. to find

  273. is this summary

  274. of the lengthy part

  275. that we've talked about

  276. pressed together

  277. and we're going

  278. to see first of all

  279. salvation refused.

  280. Now that's hard

  281. to imagine isn't it?

  282. Salvation refused.

  283. We're also going

  284. to see salvation received.

  285. And then here's

  286. what I want you to do.

  287. I want you to stop

  288. just for a minute.

  289. Take your Bible

  290. or take your

  291. whatever you have

  292. iPad or whatever

  293. and I want you

  294. to put your finger

  295. on a couple

  296. different things.

  297. Look at verse 64.

  298. It says

  299. he knew who it was

  300. who would betray him.

  301. Now we're dealing

  302. with a kind of

  303. a global summary

  304. at the end

  305. of the chapter

  306. about Christ's ministry

  307. and here is a little

  308. it almost seems

  309. to be a little

  310. marginal comment.

  311. He knew who was

  312. going to betray him.

  313. It even gets ramped up

  314. if you will go ahead.

  315. You look there

  316. at verse 70

  317. it says

  318. Jesus answered then

  319. did I not choose

  320. you the twelve

  321. and yet one of you

  322. is a

  323. what?

  324. Devil.

  325. Verse 71

  326. he spoke of Judas

  327. the son of Simon

  328. Iscariot

  329. for he

  330. one of the twelve

  331. was going to

  332. betray him.

  333. Now look

  334. you can understand

  335. the Jews

  336. redacting Jesus.

  337. I mean we follow

  338. that.

  339. We see that.

  340. You can understand

  341. the disciples

  342. who else shall we

  343. go to?

  344. You have the words

  345. of life.

  346. What is Judas

  347. doing in all of this?

  348. Ask yourself

  349. the question

  350. what is Judas

  351. doing in this picture?

  352. I wouldn't ask

  353. the question

  354. if I didn't have

  355. an idea.

  356. And I want you

  357. to chew on that

  358. and think about it

  359. because I think

  360. Judas' presence

  361. is profoundly

  362. significant to us

  363. in our awe

  364. at the glory

  365. of salvation.

  366. Well let's get

  367. into the passage

  368. and pick up

  369. first of all

  370. on salvation

  371. refused

  372. there in verse 60

  373. when many of his

  374. disciples heard it

  375. they said

  376. this is a hard

  377. saying

  378. who can listen

  379. to it?

  380. And I want you

  381. to recognize

  382. that when we

  383. pick up here

  384. in verse 60

  385. we find that

  386. this is at the

  387. conclusion of

  388. actually two days

  389. of ministry

  390. and in those

  391. two days of

  392. ministry

  393. I want you

  394. to know

  395. that Christ

  396. had over

  397. and over

  398. again

  399. made the

  400. issues

  401. of salvation

  402. undeniably

  403. clear

  404. and lest

  405. you have

  406. any question

  407. about it

  408. salvation

  409. is not

  410. something

  411. that just

  412. kind of

  413. delivers us

  414. from mediocrity

  415. and gives us

  416. something better

  417. than what we

  418. had before

  419. salvation

  420. is

  421. the grace

  422. of God

  423. that delivers

  424. us

  425. from the

  426. moral

  427. bankruptcy

  428. and darkness

  429. of our own

  430. heart

  431. and gives

  432. to us

  433. eternal life

  434. a change

  435. we who were

  436. dead in

  437. trespasses

  438. and sin

  439. become alive

  440. in Christ

  441. Jesus

  442. we who were

  443. once

  444. the absolute

  445. miserable

  446. hopeless

  447. broken

  448. individuals

  449. in our

  450. rebellion

  451. against God

  452. become the

  453. children of

  454. God

  455. salvation

  456. always has

  457. the starting

  458. point in

  459. helping a

  460. man recognize

  461. the hardness

  462. of his heart

  463. and the despair

  464. of his soul

  465. and unless

  466. you understand

  467. the darkness

  468. of your heart

  469. and the sin

  470. that is there

  471. you have no need

  472. for the Savior

  473. Jesus made that

  474. clear in his

  475. preaching

  476. and as you

  477. work your way

  478. through the

  479. passage you

  480. will see that

  481. actually when

  482. people heard

  483. what Jesus

  484. had to say

  485. they were

  486. offended at it

  487. that brings us

  488. here to verse

  489. 60 and mark

  490. what it says

  491. this is a hard

  492. saying

  493. and what I

  494. want you to

  495. understand

  496. is this

  497. is that people

  498. understood

  499. Christ's message

  500. and they didn't

  501. like what they

  502. heard

  503. they didn't

  504. like what they

  505. heard

  506. how many of you

  507. have wondered

  508. that well

  509. if I could

  510. just make

  511. the gospel

  512. a little

  513. clear

  514. I mean

  515. obviously

  516. everybody

  517. would like

  518. it

  519. hey

  520. that's not

  521. necessarily

  522. the case

  523. and the

  524. absolute

  525. perfect

  526. instrument

  527. and messenger

  528. of the Lord

  529. of hosts

  530. namely

  531. his own

  532. son

  533. who with

  534. perfection

  535. and humility

  536. and with

  537. tenderness

  538. preached the

  539. gospel message

  540. at the end

  541. of the day

  542. when people

  543. understood it

  544. they didn't

  545. like it

  546. now mark

  547. what this

  548. actually is

  549. saying

  550. the statement

  551. was really

  552. not a

  553. humble

  554. understanding

  555. or a

  556. humble

  557. admission

  558. that the

  559. gospel

  560. was difficult

  561. to understand

  562. when it

  563. says this

  564. is a hard

  565. saying

  566. how many

  567. of you

  568. have actually

  569. had to deal

  570. with hard

  571. sayings

  572. that you

  573. couldn't get

  574. your hands

  575. around

  576. I mean

  577. you know

  578. someone's

  579. trying to

  580. explain something

  581. to you

  582. man can you

  583. go over that

  584. again slowly

  585. because I

  586. don't get

  587. it

  588. it's hard

  589. it's complex

  590. that's not

  591. what they were

  592. saying at all

  593. what they were

  594. saying is this

  595. is they

  596. understood

  597. exactly what

  598. Jesus was

  599. saying

  600. and they

  601. were irritated

  602. by it

  603. they found

  604. the gospel

  605. objectionable

  606. now why

  607. is that

  608. why is that

  609. the truth

  610. of the matter

  611. is is that

  612. the gospel

  613. begins by

  614. helping us

  615. recognize

  616. the bankruptcy

  617. of our soul

  618. and the

  619. darkness

  620. of our

  621. heart

  622. and the

  623. rebellion

  624. of our

  625. nature

  626. against the

  627. authority

  628. and the

  629. supremacy

  630. of God

  631. and the

  632. gospel

  633. begins by

  634. first of all

  635. letting us

  636. know that we

  637. are in a

  638. terrible

  639. situation

  640. it's kind

  641. of interesting

  642. actually I was

  643. thinking about

  644. this this

  645. morning as I

  646. was praying

  647. because if

  648. you were to

  649. listen to a

  650. lot of

  651. televangelists

  652. you would

  653. hear a

  654. very interesting

  655. gospel do you

  656. know what it

  657. is Jesus

  658. has a wonderful

  659. plan for your

  660. life and if

  661. you kind of

  662. send me a

  663. check or two

  664. I will see to

  665. it that you

  666. prosper how many

  667. of you heard

  668. something like

  669. that or if

  670. you put your

  671. hand on the

  672. tele not the

  673. telephone anymore

  674. that's and not

  675. the TV anymore

  676. flat screen but

  677. you know hey if

  678. you do this and

  679. that whatever I

  680. can either take

  681. care of your

  682. financial needs I

  683. can make you a

  684. happy and wealthy

  685. person everybody

  686. in your neighborhood

  687. will like you just

  688. follow my plan and

  689. write your check

  690. thus and so and

  691. I'm going to

  692. bless you that's

  693. not the gospel

  694. that is a

  695. huckster peeling

  696. to people's

  697. carnal desire

  698. the gospel is

  699. this first of all

  700. you've got a

  701. horrible disease

  702. that is going to

  703. doom you forever

  704. and Jesus has

  705. the answer and

  706. come to him with

  707. a broken and

  708. contrite heart and

  709. he is going to

  710. save you I do

  711. want you to

  712. understand that the

  713. gospel is hard

  714. news before it's

  715. good news and

  716. it's often

  717. rejected and so

  718. when we bring the

  719. sweetness of the

  720. gospel when we

  721. bring the hope that

  722. is there in Christ

  723. Jesus we shouldn't

  724. be overwhelmed if

  725. on occasion it

  726. ends up offending

  727. people and is

  728. really troublesome

  729. you see people don't

  730. mind having some of

  731. their symptoms to

  732. sin addressed but

  733. what they really have

  734. a problem with is

  735. having the root issues

  736. of their heart

  737. exposed and brought

  738. out into the light

  739. where only Christ can

  740. deal with them and

  741. so as you look at

  742. this opening passage I

  743. do want you to

  744. understand that as

  745. we get a drift of

  746. what ministry was

  747. like for Christ we

  748. shouldn't let people's

  749. rejection of Christ

  750. and the message of

  751. hope of salvation in

  752. him alone end up

  753. being something that

  754. overwhelms us and

  755. causes us to be

  756. discouraged in sharing

  757. our passion to see

  758. people come to

  759. Christ don't let

  760. people's struggle

  761. discourage you from

  762. ministry now

  763. incidentally as you

  764. look at this passage

  765. you find there in

  766. verse 60 people are

  767. pretty irritated but

  768. look at 61 Jesus

  769. knowing in himself

  770. that his disciples

  771. were grumbling about

  772. this said do you

  773. take offense at this

  774. that's kind of a

  775. duh question isn't

  776. it like is this really

  777. a problem for you

  778. how many of you

  779. learned that sometimes

  780. questions are just

  781. designed to frame the

  782. moment are you

  783. having a problem

  784. here is there

  785. something bothering

  786. you he knew what

  787. was going on look at

  788. verse 62 then what

  789. what if you were to

  790. see the son of man

  791. ascending to where he

  792. was before you see he

  793. had helped them see

  794. that their real problem

  795. in life was not that

  796. they needed another

  797. meal or increase in

  798. their income or maybe a

  799. little bit of health

  800. care the real issue was

  801. the spiritual hardness

  802. of their heart and

  803. their moral depravity

  804. and they struggled

  805. with that they got

  806. irritated he says hey

  807. let's take it a step

  808. further how is it going

  809. to affect you look at

  810. verse 32 62 how is it

  811. going to affect you if

  812. you were to see the son

  813. of man ascending to

  814. where he was before

  815. what is that all about

  816. remember Jesus had come

  817. down from heaven and

  818. here he was on earth

  819. preaching that he was

  820. the son of man and he

  821. was also going to be

  822. the one who was their

  823. redeemer and hope and

  824. he says and I'll tell

  825. you what if you're

  826. irritated with hearing

  827. what I have to say let

  828. me tell you the time is

  829. coming when I'm going to

  830. go up turn in your

  831. Bibles over to Acts

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  832. chapter 2 so you have a

  833. little further

  834. understanding of this in

  835. Acts chapter 2 the

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  836. sermon that Peter

  837. preached at Pentecost

  838. begins this way now

  839. you're going to wonder

  840. if I'm going to skip

  841. over to verse 14 no I'm

  842. not okay but in

  843. essence what Peter says

  844. is this is listen you

  845. guys listen carefully to

  846. what I have to tell you

  847. there in verse 22 men

  848. of Israel hear these

  849. words Jesus of Nazareth a

  850. man attested to you by

  851. God with mighty works and

  852. wonders and signs that

  853. God did through him in

  854. your midst as you

  855. yourself know this

  856. Jesus delivered up

  857. according to the

  858. definite plan and

  859. foreknowledge of God

  860. you crucified and killed

  861. by the hands of lawless

  862. men hey is that a way to

  863. win friends and influence

  864. people when you tell

  865. them what they are I

  866. mean hey you guys out

  867. here a bunch of skunks

  868. and let's top it off keep

  869. on working forward Peter

  870. explains and this Jesus

  871. who you crucified what

  872. happened he rose from the

  873. dead and let's go a

  874. little further if you

  875. will notice in verse 36

  876. it says let all the house

  877. of Israel therefore know

  878. for certain that God has

  879. made him both Lord and

  880. Christ this Jesus whom you

  881. crucified in the context of

  882. the argument he explains the

  883. fact that Christ abides in

  884. heaven he's lifted up he's up

  885. there now and he is going to

  886. come back someday and he is

  887. going to deal with those who

  888. have rebelled against him and

  889. refused him and here is

  890. Jesus going back to the

  891. passage in John what he is

  892. doing is telling them

  893. undeniably and clearly the day

  894. is coming when he is going to

  895. rise again and rising again he

  896. is going to be the judge and the

  897. Lord of the whole earth if they

  898. were struggling with hearing him

  899. in the flesh tell them that they

  900. had a sin problem he says that's

  901. nothing compared to when I show

  902. up again and I actually deal with

  903. all the issues going on in your

  904. life look at verse 66 after this

  905. many of his disciples turned back

  906. and no longer walked with him the

  907. verse marks a very distinct change in

  908. Christ's ministry very public open and

  909. we find that this large throng of

  910. people who heard the gospel clearly

  911. proclaimed ended up saying we don't

  912. want anything to do with what we're

  913. hearing and what we see here is that

  914. gospel truth eventually leads people

  915. to believe or reject Jesus and so one

  916. of the things that you can kind of

  917. evaluate in your own ministry and by

  918. the way why are we drawing breath

  919. today does anybody have an idea why

  920. we're drawing breath listen to me it's

  921. not so you can kind of accumulate

  922. something so you can retire and

  923. eventually end up in a nursing home

  924. everybody got that we are here on

  925. temporary assignment for one explicit

  926. reason and as a draw people to Jesus

  927. and when that's over we're checking out

  928. and going home

  929. everybody said amen we're not here

  930. together primarily primarily just to

  931. enjoy one another's company we are here

  932. to have our hearts and souls

  933. encouraged by the glory of Christ and

  934. as we are here together it is to kind

  935. of catch the virus and the infection

  936. and we go out and spread the happy

  937. disease of Jesus is the only answer

  938. everywhere we go right don't be

  939. surprised if people don't like it don't

  940. be surprised and you can evaluate the

  941. testimony and ministry of Christ and use

  942. it as a as a benchmark or an example of

  943. how you go about it for one I do want

  944. you to know that faithful witnessing

  945. involves meeting needs say it with me

  946. faithful witnessing involves meeting

  947. needs when we go out what day is it

  948. Greg we're going out to do oatmeal

  949. 19th I should have asked Connie Connie what

  950. day are we going out it's 19th when we go

  951. out and pass out little cups of oatmeal

  952. and by the way there it's really nice it's

  953. hot it's been fixed and in the back do

  954. you put strawberries and raspberries on

  955. top of it and then there's a separate

  956. little baggie that has you know sugar in

  957. it and a spoon and a napkin I mean it's

  958. really well prepared we're going out

  959. there and we're showing kindness but do

  960. you know why we're really doing it because

  961. there are people that need Jesus and I

  962. don't mind whatever it is that gets an

  963. opportunity and by the way so far I've

  964. not had one chance really really to share

  965. the gospel with anybody that I've talked

  966. to there it takes time the last well I

  967. won't go there we get sidetracked okay

  968. you start with kindness everybody got

  969. that say it with me you start with

  970. kindness I do want you to know that

  971. eventually faithful witnessing involves

  972. more than just kindness it involves the

  973. gospel and when that happens don't be

  974. surprised if people don't accept it well

  975. that's pretty sobering look at verse 66

  976. it says and from this time many of his

  977. disciples turned back and no longer walk

  978. with him maybe he should have taken a

  979. class in how to be persuasive you know

  980. try something I mean well let's keep

  981. going so Jesus said to the 12 do you want

  982. to go away as well now I want you to look

  983. at salvation received and do understand

  984. this that when Jesus asked this question

  985. everybody look up so you don't miss this

  986. he wasn't asking because he was insecure

  987. how many of you sometimes have asked

  988. questions where you're really trying to

  989. hope that the question comes back or the

  990. answer comes back and kind of elevate

  991. your spirit I mean out of 20,000 about

  992. the crowd you can see them kind of

  993. shuffling off and irritation muttering

  994. with each other about low life Jesus I

  995. mean why did he just keep feeding us

  996. giving us this business about our sin

  997. and blah blah blah we're leaving and he

  998. says are you guys packing up and leaving

  999. too and he wasn't asking because he

1000. didn't know what the point was he wasn't

1001. asking because he didn't know the hearts

1002. of men his question was not for the sake

1003. of discovery but really for the sake of

1004. display so many times in your life the

1005. challenges that we endure are more for

1006. the sake of helping us see the issues so

1007. we can actually come to grips with what's

1008. going on and we can find the sufficiency

1009. of Christ do you understand that point let

1010. me say it slowly the difficulties and the

1011. challenges that you face are often brought

1012. into your life to help you discover the

1013. needs that you have and the sufficiency

1014. of Christ well I do like Peter's answer

1015. look at it we just sang it earlier Peter

1016. says Lord to whom shall we go you have the

1017. words of eternal life well that's an answer

1018. that just knocks it out of the park isn't

1019. it and I want you to understand as you as you

1020. look at this passage that here is is Peter and

1021. he steps out to the front he says listen I see

1022. all these people who are rejecting you but you

1023. know what are we going to do you're the one that

1024. has the words of life these dear men that that

1025. were part of this little little group 12

1026. were not casual followers that were intrigued by

1027. occasional miracles out of the 11 apart from

1028. Judas 10 of them would die as martyrs and so I

1029. want you to know that when Peter says what he

1030. does here in this passage he says you're the ones

1031. has the words of life what he was saying is this is

1032. that the salvation that we've received brings

1033. complete faith in the finished work of Christ

1034. alone now when you stop and think about this here

1035. is 20,000 who walked away and 11 basically that

1036. stayed it would be interesting for us to kind of

1037. stop and say how did it happen that way well for

1038. one I want you to look then at verse 68 or 69 or I'm

1039. sorry 70 Jesus in 70 answers so how is it that you've

1040. come to faith he says did I not choose you the 12 how is

1041. it that those individuals had come to faith he says I

1042. chose you now go back to 44 just for a minute and not for

1043. the sake of of irritation but I want you to understand

1044. that when Jesus said did I not choose you the 12 the point

1045. that he was making is that your relationship with me is of my

1046. drawing you to faith verse 44 no one can come to me unless the

1047. father who sent me draws him no one and so it's interesting as we

1048. look at this passage to recognize that here is Peter making a profession and

1049. confessing his faith and yet Jesus also reminds him of the fact that his

1050. understanding was the work of grace it was not Peter just being smarter than

1051. the rest let me give you another illustration that is exactly the same

1052. and I want you to turn for it because of the importance of the of the

1053. argument I make turn in your Bible to Matthew chapter 16 verse 17

    Matthew 16:17

1054. go back to keep your finger in John because we are coming back there but

1055. Matthew chapter 16 verse 17 just mark what what happens in that case Jesus is

    Matthew 16:17

1056. talking with the disciples he said hey by the way who do men say that I am

1057. and they kind of rattle off different things that they'd heard and and Jesus

1058. says that yeah okay but what do you say well who do you think I am Peter says

1059. what you are the Christ the son of the living God and I can see Jesus breaking

1060. into a smile and say let me put an a-plus in your grade book you are smarter

1061. than the rest of them is that what he says huh you got it Peter I mean you're the best

1062. student I have is that what he says oh verse 17 and Jesus answered him did did

1063. did Jesus let Peter give himself an attaboy and a pat on the back what would he do

1064. immediately after Peter's confession Jesus launches he says blessed are you

1065. Simon Barjona for flesh and blood what has not revealed this to you but my father is

1066. who's in heaven you got it with someone else's help

1067. don't want to ask you the question but how many of you ever relied on somebody else to

1068. get an answer in a class huh you know is that you didn't know the answer you

1069. and there you are you got you look brilliant don't you

1070. Peter got the answer right Jesus turned around and said you didn't get it with your own help

1071. you didn't get it by yourself the father my father he's the one who lit you up and helped

1072. you understand and so why is God so focused on helping us understand that salvation is his

1073. business and he's the one who does it I must confess that the fact of God's sovereignty

1074. in salvation and the truth that salvation is his work alone could be a little frustrating a little

1075. confusing if kept to itself how many of you heard what I just said

1076. you see I believe entirely in the sovereignty of God in salvation

1077. but at the same time I recognize that salvation is something that is profound in its beauty

1078. and its declaration of the glory of Christ and as you think about this matter of salvation

1079. it should awe you that God saves it all

1080. earlier in the week I listened to Louis Giglio in his video or his DVD called indescribable

1081. how many of you ever listened to Louis Giglio raise your hands come on get him up I'm losing

1082. out the crowd here Louis Giglio and has a great you can pick it up on YouTube a thing called

1083. indescribable he knocks it out of the park talking about creation listen to me creation is small potatoes

1084. in terms of its significance in declaring the glory of Christ in this universe do you want you to

1085. recognize that at creation you want you to recognize that at creation the angels kind of shouted for joy

1086. it's like yeah you know another universe you know whatever and and that's small salvation is something

1087. that causes them to be awestruck

1088. so why is Judas in this picture

1089. why is Judas in this picture

  1090. there

1091. in verse 64 Jesus says

1092. he knew from the beginning

1093. who those were who did not believe

1094. and who it was who would betray him

  1095. and in verse 70

1096. did I not choose you the twelve and yet one of you is a devil

1097. he spoke of Judas the son of Simon Iscariot

1098. for he one of the twelve was going to betray him

1099. and as you look at this what I want you to recognize is we have the Jews who rejected Christ

1100. we have the disciples who are drawn by grace to receive Christ

1101. and overarching this thing is the awesome glory of a God who cares enough for us

1102. that he is unrelenting in his interest in our salvation

1103. and here's Judas in the picture and he is there to show us grace abounding

1104. I want you to recognize that every step of the way

1105. Christ who had chosen Judas to walk with him knowing fully that Judas would betray him

1106. had to have pled with Judas

1107. with the tenderness of Christ

1108. that he would walk away

  1109. in faith

  1110. and not in doubt

1111. Judas spent three years watching Jesus

1112. he watched Jesus perform miracles

1113. he saw Jesus handling the scriptures

1114. he heard the teaching of Christ

1115. he saw the compassion of the Savior

1116. who came into the world to save sinners

1117. and I have no doubt

1118. that over and over again

1119. Jesus with a winsome and a broken heart

  1120. ministered to Judas

1121. and how did Judas handle it?

  1122. He turned his back

  1123. you know what?

1124. the night that Jesus was betrayed

1125. what he did was he broke bread with his disciples

1126. and after he had done that

  1127. he washed their feet

1128. do you know whose feet he washed along with the other eleven?

1129. he washed the feet of Judas

1130. I don't look at the statement in verse 70

  1131. as an indictment

1132. or even so much as prophetic

1133. but as one that was a recognition

1134. of the desperate spiritual need of Judas

1135. for the sake of drawing attention to the Savior

1136. that he might be saved rather than doomed

  1137. and here is Judas

  1138. a model

1139. and an example to us

1140. of how Christ loves the broken and ruined sinner

1141. and even in his rebellion

1142. is winsome in his appeal to them

1143. the last thing that Jesus said to Judas

1144. when he came into the garden was this

1145. do you betray me with a kiss?

  1146. are you doing this?

  1147. for real?

1148. and the way that Jesus ministered to Judas

1149. reminds us that in gospel ministry

1150. there are no limitations to our affection

  1151. and our tenderness

  1152. do you understand that?

  1153. listen to me

1154. it gives me an idea of how to handle a neighbor

  1155. who's really irritable

  1156. be like Jesus

1157. it helps me understand how to handle a rebellious child

  1158. be like Jesus

1159. it helps me know how to deal with rejection

  1160. and the disappointment of

1161. the hardness of the world that we live in

  1162. be like Jesus

1163. so as we close John chapter 6

    John 6 chapter mention

1164. here's what I want you to recognize

1165. that this passage gives to us

1166. a wonderful picture of the Lord Jesus Christ

  1167. truthful in exposing sin

  1168. and pride

1169. people walked away from hearing Jesus

1170. and they understood exactly what their heart's condition was

1171. we see also that Jesus was humble

  1172. in explaining that salvation

1173. is the work of God

1174. we also see that he was wonderful

  1175. in bringing salvation

1176. to all those that were called

  1177. and he was loving

1178. even to the most hard

  1179. and unrepentant sinner

  1180. in the mix

1181. so let me ask you this

  1182. that's my Jesus

  1183. do you know him

  1184. do you know him

1185. do you know the one

1186. who came into this world

  1187. to save sinners

1188. of whom I am chief

1189. or are you sitting out here this morning

  1190. with a heart that

1191. is burdened by the guilt and shame of your life

1192. and I want you to know

1193. Jesus is the only answer

1194. Jesus is the only answer

  1195. let's close in prayer

  1196. our father

1197. as we look to the scriptures

  1198. this morning

  1199. and we see

1200. the glory of our savior

  1201. our longing is this

1202. is that he would be lifted up among us

1203. and that we would delight in him

  1204. as our God

  1205. and our savior

1206. and I pray this morning

  1207. that as

  1208. we bring this service

  1209. to a close

  1210. that

  1211. those who are here

1212. that do not know Christ

  1213. would have their hearts

1214. warmed by the Holy Spirit

  1215. and recognizing

1216. the burden of their soul

  1217. would come to Christ

  1218. repenting of their sin

1219. and believing in him alone

  1220. for their salvation

  1221. that's our prayer

  1222. that's our desire

  1223. as we sing

1224. that Jesus would be lifted up

1225. and we ask this in his name

  1226. amen

  1227. let's stand together

1228. as our band comes to lead us

  1229. in our closing song

  1230. let me encourage you

  1231. if you're here today

  1232. and you recognize

  1233. the spirit of God

  1234. is addressing

1235. a spiritual need you have

  1236. you may be here

1237. and he is calling you

  1238. he's talking to you

  1239. about the spiritual burden

  1240. of your heart
